The delegate of the government, Patricia Navarro, together with the mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo, has presented the project for ‘Playas Seguras’ launched by the Board “to provide

greater safety to beach users and tourists in this coronavirus health alert, but also to create employment.”

The Board aims to “intensify and strengthen the protection of residents on Malaga’s beaches against possible Covid infections, and we want them to be the safest beaches in Spain.”

Similarly, the delegate believes that tourists “who have always come to visit our areas should continue to do so, whilst main-

taining the use of masks, distances and hygiene if we want to enjoy, in a different way, our beaches this summer.”

For this, the Board has reinforced the plans of each town hall with the hiring of 902 beach assistants, in charge of infor ming and advising bathers and coordinating with the authorities if necessary.

Almost €24 million have been planned for the training and hiring of more than 3,000 beach assistants, of which, a total of 45 are distributed

throughout the 17 beaches of Nerja for this purpose.

Torrox will also have 30 auxiliaries to assist on beaches along its more than nine kilometres of coastline.

Thus, the municipality has already purchased new vehicles, such as a pick-up, a 4x4 quad and a jet ski with trailer; It will also have 16 rescue tubes, 12 water rescue cans, and 10 lifebuoys.

A total of €10.5 million have been earmarked to contribute to improving security throughout the An-

dalucian coast, half of which is to provide towns with the re-

sources and materials that guarantee this security.

THE councillor for Beaches of Nerja, Francisco Arce, has expressed his concern about the delay of the installation of the beaconing of the beaches, a service contracted by the Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Axarquía, which alleges delays in administrative procedures.

In Nerja, the maritime signalling of the

bathing areas stretches for 8,100 metres with 31 buoys.

The reserved bathing area is to be marked with a coastal strip formed by a series of buoys arranged 200 metres away, in a line parallel to the coast. SUMMER means wildfire season in Spain.

Andalucia has registered several important blazes in just the last 10 days, one fire in mountains just behind popular Costa Almeria holiday resort Mojacar burning its way through nearly more than 180 hectares in less than 24 hours.

And as hot air from the Sahara pushes up temperatures this week, and weather forecasters predict another heatwave will start sweeping across much of the south and centre of the country by the weekend, already tinder dry conditions in much of the country mean wildfires are a real risk.

THE Hospital de la Axarquía has opened new paediatric facilities. This renovation has been possible thanks to the initiative ‘El Poder de Una Sonrisa,’ promoted by the Vikings Street Workout Club, which has enabled the entire Children’s Classroom of the hospital to be completely remodelled.

The campaign carried out by this sports club consisted of the edition and sale, over the past Christmas, of 1,000 calendars that were distributed among the inhabitants of the Axarquía region.

THE coastline of the municipality of VelezMalaga will now benefit from a surveillance and rescue drone included in the beach contingency plan for

the summer of 2020.

This was presented on Thursday June 25, by the councillor for Beaches, Jesús Pérez Atencia, who explained that “it is a state-of-the-

art drone that will carry out surveillance and information work throughout our coastline. These devices save a lot of time in detecting possible incidents and it is possible to supervise areas quickly and efficiently.”

According to the mayor, “these drones will also help informants to control the capacity of the beaches, check if they are more full or less full or see the areas that are clearer.

“From the Concejalía de Playas we work to provide efficient security measures to our entire coastline. All of them have been accentuated with the health crisis we are experiencing. That is why we continue to work to make our beaches a benchmark in terms of safety,” Atencia insisted.

By Damon Mitchell E U R O W E E K LY N E W S w a s l u c k y enough to speak with Dionisio Torre, on Monday June 29, a gentleman from Granada who has decided to swim across the coast of Granada to raise awareness about t h e n e e d f o r b o n e m a r ro w a n d blood donations to help in the fight against cancer in children.

Dionisio along with Belgian swimmer Bart De Rooze started the activity as part of the Medula Swimming project, an idea they hope will grow to cover other sports. “Although we started with swimming we feel that the objective could be linked with any sport, such as Medula Running or Medula Cycling etc,” said Dionisio.

However, the big picture is Heroes Hasta la Medula, a non-profit association started in 2016 by families and friends whose children were being treated for leukaemia in the Paediatric Oncohaematology Centre in Granada.

“We do not collect money for the association, what we wish is for people to become aware of its existence and the fact that they may be able to help through blood or marrow do-

nations,” Dionisio explained.

He went on to point out the need for donations, “The Spanish bone marrow donor registry closed 2019 with more than 405,000 donors, of which only 221 became compatible with patients and effectively donated their marrow to save a life. If we get more donors on the registry, more lives can be saved.”

The swimmers also invite anybody that wishes to join them to feel free.

Whether it be for the whole of their journey or just in stages. For example on Saturday they swam across the Costa Granadina between Playa

Cabria and Playa Granada, on the fourth stage of their journey which is a distance of over 10km. They were joined by 12 other swimmers for various parts of the swim.

They have eight different trips to make all of around 10km each. The next stage will be on Friday, July 3, where they will head off from Playa Granada to La Chucha.

Dionisio feels that “this is a project that many sports teams could take part in in their own style and also in their own regions, Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca etc.”

He added “If any swimming clubs from other regions wish to come and swim on the other stages they are more than welcome!”

A 33-YEAR-OLD resident from Torre del Mar was arrested on Sunday, June 28, after being caught stealing all four wheels from a car parked in Calle del Río.

Apparently, in an act of love, he stole them as a gift for his girlfriend. In fact, Local Police officers discovered the stolen items in her home, which she alleged that he had told her he had purchased them from an establishment.

Officers then located the wheels at his girlfriend’s house, who stated that he had given them to her after assuring her that he had bought them.

Exciting exhibition THE councillor for Culture of Nerja, Gema Laguna, has announced that from Friday, July 3, the exhibition of paintings by Carmen Casas Úbeda named ‘Revision’ is inaugurated in the Municipal Exhibition Hall, which can be visited on Calle Cristo until July 18, with hours from 11.30am to 1.30pm, and from 8pm to 10pm.

HARD ROUTE: The ascent towards the town of Frigliani.

ELEVEN cyclists from Axarquía made it their goal to travel part of the region on a mountain bike and along its country roads, challenging its steep slopes, with a distance of just over 200km in intense heat. They did it on Sunday June 28, with departure and arrival, on a circular route, from Torre del Mar. They started very early, at 5.15am from El Faro del Paseo Marítimo de Torre del Mar, their first stretch, the lightest because they still had energy, and because it was much cooler.

The entire route is known for its difficulty and takes in Caleta de Vélez,

Algarrobo-Costa, Mezquitilla, Lagos, Torrox-Costa and Nerja as the flat part of the first section. It then begins an ascent towards Frigiliana.

Upon reaching Moclinejo, although they were drenched in sweat, they knew it was the last push that would lead them to Rincón de la Victoria, which meant reaching the coast and heading the last 25km along the coastline.

While thousands of bathers enjoyed the sea, they arrived at the Torre del Mar Promenade at around 7pm. They had spent about 14 hours, on the road facing this madness. Not surprisingly, the group is called ‘Estamos locos’ or We are Crazy!

EASYJET: Low-cost airline announces job cuts and several airport hub closures.

AROUND 1,900 UK employees face the axe, including 727 pilots. The announcement came on June 30 as easyJet boss admitted “that the rest of the UK’s network is under review.”

The grim news comes just a few weeks after the low-cost airline warned it may need to reduce employees up to 30 per cent in a bid to “optimise its network and bases.”

The airline said it will still continue to operate flights to the airports, despite no longer operating as hubs at some airports. The pilot union Balpa’s General Secretary Brian Strutton said they had been “expecting easyJet to make an announcement of temporary measures to help the airline through to recovery.”

THE recent outbreaks in Spain, have worried some, especially those in the northeastern region of Aragón which have forced regional authorities to take a new step back in the de-escalation process.

Surprisingly, the main opposition party, PP, voted in favour along with Ciudadanos who have recently backed the PSOE in key situations, for example, the State of Alarm.

As this is something that PP would not normally do, it has angered the Catalan parties who voted him into his position.

However, due to these two parties backing Oriol Junqueras, the leader of the Republican Left (ERC) who is currently serving a 13-year prison sentence for sedition, he now holds the key to Sanchez’s continuation in the government.

Loans for European Airlines ONCE again, the boss of Ryanair Michael O’Leary has come out against state support for airlines, this time asking the European Union to question the Dutch Government’s €3.4 billion loan to KLM. Initially, Mr O’Leary had said that Ryanair would tough it out without looking for any government support, but in May, did accept a €670 million loan from Britain, possibly on the ba­ sis that if British Airways and easyJet were going to benefit then his com­ pany might as well join in.

Almost every EU member state

that has an airline has either issued a significant loan to help support it or in the case of Germany and Italy there are buy ins and takeovers in­ volved.

Greenpeace and other champions of the environment however are not happy with the way things have gone in funding these European airlines, as they believe that a massive opportu­ nity to help save the planet has been ignored.

How is annuity taxed?

In his book You and the Law in Spain for 2011 David Searl notes that both lifetime and fixed­term annuities have tax reductions. They must be declared in the investment part of the tax form. I have a Swedish an­ nuity with a fixed time of 20 years. I am 80 years old and I have been declaring the annuity as lifetime at 8 per cent.

But I think this is wrong. What percentage of the yearly amount should be declared?

H G (by email) A fixed­ term annu­ ity of 20 years pays YOU AND THE LAW tax on 25 per cent IN SPAIN of the yearly in­ come. If you receive €20,000 each year from your fixed­ term annuity, you will be taxed on €5,000. You declare this income in the investment part of the tax return. For investment income up to €6,000, the tax rate is 19 per cent, so this would draw tax of €950. However, you can deduct your personal minimo vital from your total in­ come. If you are 80 years old, this reduction is €8,100.

You can also apply this reduction to your Swedish pen­ sion income. You need a 2018 law book and a Spanish tax advisor.

Latest currency news The past couple of weeks have been marked by some notable volatil­ ity in currency markets, amidst grow­ ing concerns that we face a coron­ avirus resurgence.

During this time, we’ve seen GBP/EUR slump from 1.11 to 1.09 and EUR/GBP climb to 0.91.

Meanwhile, GBP/USD has plunged from 1.25 to 1.22, whilst EUR/USD has traded between $1.11 and $1.13.

What’s been happening?

Fresh coronavirus outbreaks in countries like China and Germany, as well as a startling spike in cases in the US, has rocked currency markets through the second half of June, amid fears of a second wave of infections.

Second wave fears drive volatility in currency markets

VOLATILE: Amidst growing concerns of a coronavirus resurgence.

This has been particularly damag­ ing for the pound. The currency has had to content with Brexit concerns and the Bank of England’s announce­ ment of more stimulus while growing increasingly sensitive to market senti­ ment.

Despite the rise in coronavirus cas­ es setting back plans to reopen the US

economy, the US dollar has actually strengthened over the last two weeks as second wave fears have kept the safe­haven currency in strong de­ mand.

Meanwhile, the euro has fluctuat­ ed in recent weeks, with Europe’s sol­ id progress towards eradicating the coronavirus being offset by the EU’s

failure to reach an agreement on a re­ covery fund as well as the threat of a transatlantic trade war.

What do you need to look out for?

Looking ahead, it’s likely the pound will remain on the back foot going for­ ward so long as Brexit progress re­ mains limited and the UK’s coron­ avirus figures remain elevated.

Only a few weeks ago PM Boris Johnson had expressed confidence that a deal could be reached by the end of July, but that optimism isn’t shared by many.

If the number of UK coronavirus in­ fections continue spiking in specific regions, the prospect of lockdown re­ strictions being reintroduced could weigh on GBP exchange rates.

For EUR investors the focus at the start of July will be whether EU lead­ ers are able to agree on the terms of the coronavirus relief fund, with fur­

ther delays likely to undermine the single currency.

The next ECB gathering will also be of interest, as will growth and output figures for the Eurozone’s largest economies.

Finally, with coronavirus concerns continuing to weigh on market senti­ ment it’s likely we will see the US dol­ lar remain well supported over the coming weeks, although any gains could be tempered as political risks begin to grow.

A very serious situation

IT strikes me that most of the the illegal street parties that are being held across the UK’s cities are not being staged as any celebration or gathering of people in pursuit of innocent fun. They are far more sinister than that. These are, particularly in London, mobs of young, predominately black lawbreakers, cocking an arrogant snook at authorities and intentionally flouting the rules to antagonise and provoke the police into more violent confrontation. It will therefore come as no surprise to me to subsequently hear the usual accusations levelled against the police of using ‘unnecessary force’ or the ‘heavy handedness’ we have come to expect.

At the time of writing, 120 police have already been injured at these ‘gatherings.’ I can only assume that as yet no ‘innocent party-goers’ have been hurt or you can be rest assured the outcry would have been heard across the nation. This is of course exactly what these shadowy ‘party’ organisers want. They want these events to be the catalyst for the continuation and escalation of their war against the authorities and an excuse to ultimately disrupt and tear asun-

der the very fabric of the UK’s society.

This is a very serious situation indeed. If the authorities don’t stop pussy footing around and appeasing those who condone and encourage this revolutionary racial violence, the streets of Britain’s great cities will begin to resemble the Beirut I warned about 30 years ago - and we will also witness the holocaust that a certain politician, far more intelligent and visionary than I prophesised even more years before that!

Talk about dammed if you do and dammed if you don’t. The British government is set up like ducks in a fairground shooting gallery, and don’t the lefty media love having a ‘pop.’ It’s really very simple; let the government make a decision and then oppose it! ‘The government wants to set up three-metre distancing.’ Media. ‘We think this is overreacting.’ ‘The government has reduced distancing to one metre.’ Media. ‘This is dangerous and irresponsible.’ ‘The gov-

ernment is imposing total lockdown.’ Media. This is overkill and unnecessary.’ ‘The government wants to reopen some services and ease the lockdown.’ Media.

‘It’s too soon.’ Etc. etc. If you get my drift!

The next move is to make sure their main interviewees are opposed to whatever subject they wish to demean, which gives the impression that the majority of the ‘experts’ disagree with the government policies. This results in the viewer beginning to think that the opinions and anti-government rhetoric being constantly aired must be supported by the majority.

Although they may disagree, they then begin to doubt their own political beliefs.

This is known as brain washing, pure and simple. Well, much to the main Media’s arrogant surprise, these methods didn’t work during the last elections. If they continue to underestimate the public intelligence in their efforts to undermine this government and rebuild their precious Labour party - they won’t work this time either.

Liberty Seguros raises over € 6,000 for the Paralympic Youth Athletics Promises Team DUE to the pandemic with mandatory social distancing rules and heightened security measures, Liberty Seguros found itself in an unprecedented situation with regard to this year’s Liberty Race.

For the first time ever, its flagship event took place online and delighted in achieving its objective of championing diversity and integration through sport. Raising an outstanding €6,333 for the Paralympic Youth Athletics Promises Team, the Liberty Race was once again hailed a resounding success.

This year, the Liberty Race saw 3,000 individuals participate in the event with nearly 1,000 users of social media sharing photos across networks and the hashtag #MiCarreraLiberty experiencing an engagement of over 860,000 on Twitter and Instagram alone.

The Liberty Race advocates

solidarity and unity whilst raising funds for young athletes with promising potential at sports level who have not yet benefited from the ADOP Plan. This programme is designed to assist elite sportspeople with disabilities in Spain to prepare for the Paralympic Games. As with previous years, funds raised through donations made by the participants of the race will go to the athletes in the Paralympic Athletics Promises Team.

Supported by Liberty Seguros, the Paralympic Athletics Promises Team comprises young males and females from all over Spain between the ages of 12 and 20 that are living with physical, visual, or intellectual challenges, such as those with learning disabilities or debilitating conditions such as cerebral palsy.

Between 2012 and the present day, the Liberty Race has raised an impressive € 246,333 in total to support these young sportspeople.

“In the difficult times that we are currently living in, ensuring that this event could go ahead for another year despite the circumstances is a testament to the fact that Liberty continues to champion inclusion and supports people with disabilities to engage in sport. Just cos you can, you don’t have to MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man OUT for my walk the other day I noticed a restaurant proudly advertising that they specialise in Mexican, Indian and Italian food. I decided this is not a place I would go to eat any of their three specialities. My reasoning is that if I wanted to eat an Indian meal wouldn’t I be better to go to an Indian restaurant that only specialised in Indian food?

I would love to know if anyone has been to one of these places and if so what was it like? This pandemic is going to sort out the men from the boys. The few eateries that I have been to have all made noticeable changes - trimmed down menus and more space. I love it.

Nothing worse than being so close to the person next to you that you want to join in their conversation. I still insist I get my table with the wobbly leg of course but no more tables in the naughty corner or the loo. The biggest bonus is they are actually pleased to see you and the service is brilliant. Of course they are real-

ising now they need local customers as well as tourists.

Saw a talk show the other night and the host was saying that the young should go out and do their thing. Be careful but basically get back to normal as it’s their time. We old have had our time and more or less nature should take its course with us. Meanwhile he’s doing his show in the comfort of his Beverly Hills mansion. If he feels so strongly why doesn’t he insist that he goes back to doing his show live in the studio with an audience who are happy to mingle? Or maybe he won’t because the network would be terrified of the consequences.

I also saw someone on the UK news saying it was too soon to open the pubs and a few other places as they wouldn’t feel safe. I’m screaming at the TV - JUST ‘COS YOU CAN, YOU DON’T HAVE TO GO! The government can open up what they like. If you aren’t comfortable don’t go. If you are then go. Simple really.

Finally I was really impressed watching 6,000 Americans cheering the POTUS drink a glass of water with one hand and then throwing the glass on the floor.

What all world leaders should strive to emulate!

away from our friends or family, leaving us only with digital contact. In addition to all of what has happened from a personal or family point of view, this pandemic has taken the lives of many loved ones and has affected others for life.

Hopefully the virus can be controlled and we now have a new premiere of ‘normality’ or ‘the new normal’ where some people have not yet learned, or do not want to, the magnitude that this pandemic can reach if we do not adopt the recommended preventive measures to try to recover our lives as much as possible to the lifestyle that we had led until a just a few months ago.

If we all do our part, little by little the economy will recover on the basis of safe and responsible tourism and with the appropriate business strategies for future projections that will make us reinvent ourselves as tourism that offers in addition to the sun and the beach, the quality of life that we en-

joy in the south, in a responsible way adhering to the new conditions.

We must change the mindset and be aware that the coronavirus has come to stay for a time, until an effective vaccine is found, so in the meantime, responsibly applying hygiene and social distancing mea-

sures. If we achieve that, for residents and tourists, we will continue to be one of the best places where we can spend our holidays, or living here in Spain because it is a privilege to enjoy our mild and bright winters or the summer holidays where freedom replaces the clock that marks the schedules.

If all together we can make it possible we will continue enjoying our paradise, simply by wearing a mask, washing your hands and maintaining the social distance of 1.5 metres, never before in the history of humanity, has such a serious problem had such an affordable solution.

Let’s be responsible and enjoy the summer that has just begun.

DAVID WORBOYS ONCE I have worked out whether a bayonet or screw fitting is required, I can change a light bulb. I have been known to insert a twopin plug into an adaptor - and even into a wall socket. And I can switch on a laptop and mow a lawn. But that’s about it, really. I am not a handyman.

If I needed to drill a hole or paint a wall, I used to call upon my old school buddy, Mike Morgan, a man who had travelled the world in the 60’s with the Merchant Navy. I admired his ability to stop a tap dripping by fixing a washer, let alone the fact that he had laid a new floor in his impressive house in Kent. My brother-in-law (a teacher) had, with his bare hands and a little specialist help, created an extension to his house, while my father- inlaw had actually built a house in Brazil, installing the plumbing

NO HANDYMAN: I can change a light bulb, but that is about it. and the electrics.

How I envy such people.

One of my Brazilian father-inlaw’s closest friends was a farmer. Not only could he keep cattle, pigs and chickens, he delivered their new-born calves and piglets and wringed chickens’ necks. Being squeamish, I couldn’t even watch him doing this. It was all I could do to witness a horse farting.

Gardening is almost as much

out of the question as farming.

My mother maintained a beautiful garden into her 90s and could name every flower, plant and tree.

My father tended his vegetable garden to ensure the Sunday roast was accompanied by the freshest, healthiest produce. But I learned nothing from them. As I can hardly distinguish between a radish and a dandelion, I have either to

employ a gardener or live in a flat.

As for motor cars! The mysteries of everything under the bonnet are quite beyond me, and how do people use jump leads? I can drive and I can fill up with petrol but if anything fails to function I am flummoxed. I remember running out of petrol on the way back from Oxford a few months after passing my driving test.

I called my fat h e r from a phone box and, while waiting for him, I noticed one of the tyres was pretty flat. I started thinking. Maybe the car would start if I asked my father to put some air in the offending tyre.

Obviously, I have never bought anything which requires assembling - or even anything which is accompanied by instructions - apart from the odd packet of Ibuprofen.

While my neighbours spend Sunday mornings at their garages, transferring engines from Aston Martins to London taxis for the hell of it, I just pray that my car will start in the morning. Otherwise, what would I do?

DEAR Euro Weekly, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez made an excellent job with the coronavirus outbreak but he certainly has not thoroughly thought through the idea of scrapping 10-year-old cars.

It may be a good idea for cities and large towns with their higher income and excellent bus service for those unable to replace their vehicle, but that is not the case for everyone nationwide.

Has he taken into account the fact that a lot of people in villages and satellite urbanisations do not have that kind of service and are still recovering financially, being on lower incomes, from last September storms. Also, those who bought used cars as replacements certainly would not be able to undertake the further expense forced on them? What has he for them?

OUR VIEW Strict protocol

IN the street you can trust yourself to wear a mask, cross the road, go back indoors if people refuse to follow social distancing measures, but what do you do if you are stuck in a 130ft long metal tube going at 575 mph through the sky? There’s nowhere to run.

As the first passengers step off flights both in the UK and in Spain there seem to be different sides of the story.

One gentleman spoke of no checks on the UK side and a free for all on board the plane where passengers were not allowed to space out and chose to remove masks when they settled in.

Another traveller tells of flying into Stansted on a flight where passengers were spaced out, wearing masks and temperature checked upon arrival.

Both were with the same low-cost airline…Ryanair.

With many people who have been stuck in Spain waiting to see their family for the first time in months and sun worshippers with sights set on the coastal beaches, we would hope EVERY single flight would follow a strict protocol to ensure the safety in both countries and the stop of any spread of infection.

So, what is the excuse? Laziness? Or maybe lack of training for staff?

If you board a flight and passengers are not following measures you know are strictly important who can you turn to? The passengers themselves may not listen to reason (people don’t often take kindly to being told what to do), the air staff would hopefully be the main choice and keeping an eye on this as a priority or will we see frustrated captains turning back?

For your own peace of mind always remember to look after number one, flights are never really the healthiest of places anyway so, keep your mask on, wear gloves, use hand sanitiser and try as best you can to keep your distance. Wash those travelling clothes as soon as you can.

But remember it still continues when you hit the ground, for now, let’s all stay safe.

An education Dear Euro Weekly News, I am an American who has lived in Almeria for eight years. I am astounded at the lack of understanding that Leapy Lee displays when he comments on American politics. His recent commentary called ‘Blaming a Racist Virus’ is rife with errors and bias.

The George Soros allegations are an old rightwing trope that no Americans take seriously.

Trump’s PR stunt, clearing away peaceful protestors with flash grenades and tear gas for a photo op, has been condemned by such leading military leaders as General Mattis, General Kelly and General Milley, the acting head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. What Lee does not understand is that the brutal killing of George Floyd by white police officers has stirred an awakening of the American conscience.

Black Lives Matter is no longer just a slogan and a call for action in America. The demonstrations in its favour have spread around the world.

What are the signs that someone might need help?

We all go through stressful events from to time that can change our normal behaviour. Short-term changes to behaviour are common. We may feel more stressed, angry or sad.

These feelings are not always a sign of mental illness but changes in behaviour can be a sign that someone is developing a mental illness. You may notice that they start to behave differently.

You may see a change over a number of months.

They could become more anxious, be irritable, try to start argum e n t s , have mood swings, selfharm, sleep too much or too little, not want to be around other people, be less able to cope with work or studies, have concentration problems, have memory problems, eat more or less, or have suicidal thoughts.

How can I encourage someone to get help?

You can try to help someone by encouraging them to get help from their doctor, a GP can give treatment for

some symptoms of mental health conditions. Or they can refer your relative to a psychiatrist.

They might not want to visit their GP. They may not think they are unwell, not realise a GP can help, understand they need help but feel too embarrassed or frightened to talk to a doctor.

Speaking to a professional and opening up about how you are feeling can be quite a scary situation.

There are some things you could tell the person you’re worried about.

• You can go with them to a doctor’s appointment to support them if they don’t want to go alone.

• Many mental health problems can be treated. They might be worried they will have to go to hospital.

• GP notes are confidential.

This means the doctor can’t share information with anyone else unless they agree to it. The GP may have to share information with others if they feel someone is at risk of harming themselves.

Y o u , yourself, m a y w o r r y that you aren’t doi n g enough to help them but believe me, offering emotional support is really valuable.

Listen to them, offer them reassurance, stay calm, be patient, do not make assumptions.

FORMER neighbour Gertrude - well into her eighties and with a voice like a wood shredder due to a lifetime of heavy smoking - stunned me a few years back by asking ‘Where can I buy cigs that won’t damage my health?’

She’d just been out to buy 40 Marlboros and was horrified to notice that her favourite brand now bore grisley health war nings. She’d slung them back at the assistant, saying she didn’t want cigarettes that were dangerous, and could she please have the old ones that were safe.

I explained to Gertrude that cigarettes had always posed a health threat, but it was only in 2008 that the UK government insisted that graphic warnings be put on the packets.

Then, after a lengthy coughing fit, added ‘I can remember the days when doctors recommended smoking, and even prescribed them for asthma sufferers.’

While I did recall seeing vin-

tage ads depicting doctors and dentists endorsing various brands I thought Gertrude’s fags-for-asthmatics claim was pure fantasy. Boy, was I ever wrong!

I fact-checked her claim and found an article in the US

National Library of Medicine that infor med me that ‘throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the inhalation of fumes from burning preparations of stramonium, lobelia, tobacco, and potash became increasingly popular amongst asthmatics and their physicians throughout the world.’

One renowned asthma sufferer was French novelist Marcel Proust, who, after trying a variety of cures and even changing his diet, could get no relief - until he began smoking asthma cigarettes. So delighted was he that in 1901 he wrote to his mum to say he’d finally found something that actually worked.

The article went on to say ‘it is interesting to reflect that until the 20th century doctors paid little attention to smoking as a health hazard, prefer-

ring instead to emphasise the perceived health benefits of tobacco and other inhaled substances, and that medicated cigarettes marketed for respiratory complaints continued to be endorsed, and smoked, by doctors until well after the Second World War.’ When I was 21, after having had my tonsils removed by a leading South African ear, nose and throat specialist, the first thing I did after regaining consciousness was to light a Lucky Strike. But I hurriedly stubbed it out when I saw the surgeon enter the ward.

‘No need to do that, dear boy’ he said, ‘smoking is great for the throat. Do you mind if I have one of yours?’

A couple of years later lung cancer ushered him into an early grave and I gave up the habit - until vaping came along.

Messi’s 700th goal Arsenal signs Bukayo Saka PENALTY GOAL: Messi scored in the La Liga draw on Tuesday evening.

LIONEL MESSI was jubilant as he scored the 700th goal of his career when he converted a penalty into a goal in Barcelona’s La Liga draw with Atletico Madrid on Tuesday evening.

Top scorer Messi gently chipped the ball into the net as Jan Oblak dived the wrong way, the goal had put Barcelona 2-1 up, but Atletico soon hit back to draw 2-2.

The Argentina star played a part in the opener for Barcelona when his whipped corner hit Diego Costa and deflected into the back of the net.

Costa took the spot-kick only to see it saved by Marc-Andre ter Stegen, the ref, however, insisted it be retaken as the Barcelona goalkeeper had come off his line early, Saul Niguez took the second penalty and sent Ter Stegen the wrong way.

Messi restored Barcelona’s lead and reached his career milestone with his cheeky Panenka, but Niguez equalised again with another penalty as Barca dropped points which could cost them dear in the title race.

ARSENAL announced yesterday, July 1 that they have tied Bukayo Saka down to a long-term contract with the club in what is being rumoured as a four-year deal.

Saka has so far made 33 appearances this season, playing mainly down the left flank and has contributed three goals as well as 11 assists. The 18-year-old, who came through the club’s academy, has made a major impact during the current season after making his debut in the Europa League in 2018.

“Bukayo is a talented and intelligent young player,” head coach Mikel Arteta told the club’s website.

TEEN STAR: Signed a long term conract.

“He has impressed me with his work ethic and attitude to learn and adapt, and it has paid off in his performances.

“I am excited to continue working with him to develop him further, and for him to help us

achieve our goals.”

Arsenal’s technical director Edu commented that Saka’s contract extension is a sign the club’s academy is proving a success in the development of young players.

“This is something everyone involved wanted to happen and we are delighted Bukayo has signed a new long-term contract,” Edu added.

Saka tweeted: “London is my home. Arsenal my team. I’m so happy to finally announce my contract extension. I love playing for this club and I’m looking forward to what the future holds. The hard work continues so I can continue living my dream.”
