OUT OUT AFTER almost 100 days in the State of Alarm, months of fear, uncertainty and confinement across Spain have come to an end and the Costas have reawakened with a new energy and determination to build a better new normal. After such a long period of inactivity, flights are landing in Spain without quarantine, there’s movement across borders and provinces, children can play in parks and the economy can start to get back on its feet. There has never been a more crucial time to take the bull by the horns and MAKE the future happen. The global pandemic thrust the country into an unprecedented era that has hit the Costas hard, but now they are braced and ready to welcome locals and tourists alike. The regions are awash with excellent restaurants, bars and cafes offering a typically friendly Spanish service. And local shops and businesses will now be relying

Beaches open. on us to help them rebuild and stay afloat, hoping that money that wasn’t spent during shut down will rejuvinate trade. The sun, sea and sand have already seen thousands return to the region’s world-famous beaches

which have reopened, with necessary safety measures of course, and there’s an umistakable positive vibe as the wheels of tourism begin to move again. Councils across the Costas are investing heavily in promoting their well-publicised and hidden treasures, keen to draw holidaymakers back to where they should be, while at the same time budgeting millions to help the industry along the way. As Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, said in his pre-end of State of Alarm speech: “Now it’s time for recovery, laying the foundation for a new economy. There is another lasting tribute we can pay to those who have been on the front lines and to those we have lost: to put this country back on its feet.”

WE did it. We followed the instructions of our President, Pedro Sanchez, regardless of our political inclinations and by doing what we should we went from being one of the world’s most dangerous countries to one of the safest. Regardless of nationality, we came together and did everything asked of us, living for 98 days in a world that only weeks before we didn’t know existed. We closed our businesses, locked up our children, shielded our elderly and vulnerable, facing a frightening world of social distancing with remarkable dignity in our masks and gloves. Each night at 8pm we applauded those keeping us safe and we formed amazing self-sacrificing groups who cooked, baked, shopped and delivered for others with no thought for themselves. We showed tolerance and compassion as we queued for anything and everything and if we worried about our families’ health, finances and futures, we

worried in silence. As businesspeople we, too, suffered financially but as an essential business we had to continue despite high overheads and little income. Now, after 98 days, the State of Alarm has been lifted and our lifeline to businesses along the coasts of Spain has been restored. “Welcome, we have missed you, and we need you,” we say to returning visitors because we might not be tourist-based but our clients are. We, too want a busy landscape of bars, restaurants, beaches and hotels where visitors receive the best service they have ever had. We want them to buy properties, bring their skill sets here and their families. We want them to rebook in August and October and to come back at Christmas. More than anything else we want our wonderful business community to stop suffering. We don’t want to see any more closures, just busy and contented owners who are being rewarded

for their patience and dedication in preventing Covid-19 from robbing more lives while their own were put on hold. As a business community we have weathered recessions, but nothing like that of 2008 and no sooner did we emerge than we were confronted first by Brexit and then by Covid-19. Life will never be the same again, but we are convinced that doesn’t mean this year can’t be turned around. It will be hard and worrying at times, but we are made of tough stuff, us expats, and as pioneers and entrepreneurs we know we shall get through. Good luck to every single business-owner out there: we wish you every success in the New Now. And we are sure that by the end of the year we will be toasting together, celebrating because we all made it through. Good luck, everyone, and remember: we WILL do this!

“Unprecedented” promotion

THE ferry service connecting the resort of Alcudia and Tolon in the south of France will relaunch on July 2 after it was suspended due to the State of Alarm. Alcudia Tourism councillor Pep Cladera confirmed the news this week that the Corsica Ferries services is starting up again. The councillor was upbeat about the news and the reactivation of the economy in the town. Alcudia has since Monday been receiving German tourists as one of the locations taking part in the Balearic Island pilot tourism project. Corsica Ferries launched the Alcudia-Tolon connection in April 2018, increasing the frequency of services last year after carrying more than 63,000 passengers in the first nine months of the route operating.

INTERNATIONAL media coverage of the Balearics’ pilot tourism project represents an “unprecedented” promotion of the Spanish holiday islands, according to the regional government. The Balearic administration said the media interest in the initiative, which made the islands the first destination in Spain to receive foreign tourists since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, has “exceeded all expectations.” Ger man holidaymakers travelled to Mallorca and Ibiza last week on ‘safe travel corridor’ flights between Germany and the Balearics without having to go into a 14-day quarantine. IT was expected, but on Friday June 19 the Balearic government confirmed it has banned nightclubs in Ibiza’s West End and Magaluf and Playa de Palma from opening their doors in the new normality to prevent any potential spread of Covid-19. The resorts have a reputation for a tourism of full-on partying, alcohol-fuelled excess, and all three are subject to a government decree approved in January to try and curb extreme behaviour by holidaymakers. Now the regional administration has concerns their nightlife scenes, which attract clubbers from around the world, international celebrities among them, could turn into infection focal points. THE holiday resort of Alcudia is the first locality in Spain to gain ‘safe’ certification for its beaches on the basis of its Covid-19 infection prevention measures. The company SGS verified the distinction following three successful audits of the municipality’s Covid-19 contingency plan and prevention protocols. “Having safe beaches is an honour,” commented Alcudia mayor Barbara Rebassa. Deputy mayor Domingo Bonnin described the verification as “an added value” to the appeal of the locality and another step towards “peace of mind” for beach-goers.

GERMAN airline Eurowings is reactivating its base in Mallorca in another good sign for the recovery of the Balearic Island tourism sector. The airline, a subsidiary of Lufthansa, will be taking off from Palma on Saturday June 27 with a flight to German city Hannover following a break of some three months due to the Covid-19 crisis.

The local authority set up a Covid-19 monitoring committee in the middle of May to establish procedures and actions on Alcudia’s beaches. Different working groups focused on specific matters, including sunbed rental, the lifeguard service, and kiosk and water sport licensees. There was also training for beach workers for their own safety and that of beach-goers, plus an information campaign and the installation of notice boards featuring safety protocols on each of the nine beaches with the safe certification. At the same time, the council calculated maximum capacity for each beach.

Eurowings back The company will be operating more than 50 flights a week from Palma, going up to nearly 170 by the end of July, with connections to 16 airports in Germany and Austria. To begin with Eurowings will operate with two A-320 aircraft stationed at Palma’s Son San Joan airport, and then three over the summer.

“We are very pleased that Eurowings Europe is able to take off again,” commented Eurowings Europe Managing Director Robert Jahn. He also thanked company employees, who he said had had to “to endure a lot of uncertainty and show staying power in the past weeks.”

Cheeky Residency helpline for over-65s ex-tenant A CHEEKY former tenant of a property in Palma is under arrest for renting out the premises to tourists. National Police detained the 51-yearold for illegally occupying the property, deceiving the owner and effectively running it like a guest house, according to reports. It appears he made out he was moving out when the rental contract expired and handed over a copy of the keys to the owner, but then began using it to put up others. He even changed the electricity supply to make sure the power didn’t get cut off in the event the owner didn’t pay the bills. Police reportedly believe he rented it out to some 60 people, carrying on with the underhand activities during the State of Alarm without bothering with the hygiene measures decreed by the national government due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Age in Spain Residency Helpline for over-65s “is here to help older British people to navigate the complex Spanish residency system,” the charity said, providing one-to-one support by telephone, live chat and email. The worst year for gender violence deaths on the islands was 2016, when there were six. The report also showed that in 80 per cent of the cases in the Balearics the victim had not reported the partner or ex-partner prior to their death.

Break-in thwarted A PALMA business owner thwarted a robbery at his outlet in the centre of Palma after a scuffle with the burglar. He and his partner were spending Wednesday night June 17 in the business’s storeroom following an attempted breakin a few days earlier. On that occasion, someone had forced open and damaged the door, and it had yet to be repaired. At about 5.30am the pair heard glass smashing. They immediately set off the alarm and went to investigate. They found a broken display cabinet and someone inside trying to make off with

the cash register. The business owner tried to stop the thief, leading to a violent struggle between the two of them. The robber hit the businessman several times, causing injuries which later needed medical attention. At this point the police arrived and cuffed the burglar. Investigators have linked the 48-yearold to three other recent break-ins in shops in the same area. Police said the investigation remains open and further arrests have not been ruled out.

Direct connection A DIRECT fast ferry service between the islands of Mallorca and Formentera will launch at the beginning of next month in response to demand for the connection, the Balearia company said. The ‘Ramon Llull’ will sail three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays throughout the summer between

Palma and La Sabina ports, doing the crossing between the two islands in just three hours. The ferry will depart from Palma at 5pm and from Formentera at 12pm, sailing on to Denia on the Costa Blanca. The Covid-19 crisis means that capacity on the Balearia ferries has been reduced to allow for social distancing be-

Train on its way back MALLORCA’S historic train running between Soller and Palma is on its way back after a three-month suspension due to the Covid19 pandemic. The popular means of transport between the two will start running again on July 1. The tram between Soller town and the port will also return.

The tram service was halted when Spain’s State of Alarm came into force for the same reasons as the electric train, a minibus taking its place. “Now is the time to go back to normality and get underway because we cannot carry on like this,” commented Tren de Soller president Oscar Mayol.

The latest CAEB report concludes the Balearic economy shrank by 4.5 per cent in the first quarter of the year due to the halt in business activity under lockdown, as well as economic uncertainty at the beginning of the year. The confederation described the archipelago’s economic decline as unprecedented, highlighting the fact the services sector had been particularly hard hit. changes anticipated.” Planas also expressed the view that the maintenance of ERTE temporary suspensions of job contracts should be dependent on the existence of a coronavirus vaccine. “While we do not have a vaccine we are at risk and the ERTEs have to continue being a necessary tool so our companies do not go under and to protect employment,” she said.

‘Good sense’ required THE “hope” which the lifting of Spain’s State of Alarm at midnight on Saturday brings has to be accompanied by “good sense,” the Balearic Island president Francina Armengol has warned residents and visitors in Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. Tweeting on Sunday, the head of the regional administration said the entry of the new normality after 98 days was down to “immense commitment and solidarity,” but that now “greater responsibility” must be the order of the day. She reminded the public that “we must never forget who we are or where we’ve come from, the lives lost and the sacrifices made. “The State of Alarm has ended, but not the pandemic,” she added.

Potential host MALLORCA has offered to host the next World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) events. Island government president Catalina Cladera suggested the idea to UNWTO secretary general Zurab Pololikashvili in a videoconference meeting this week, in which Secretary of State for Tourism Bel Oliver, and Mallorca’s Tourism and Sport councilllor also took part. Cladera told Pololikashvili that the island boasts a high standard of infrastructure for staging events. The Consell de Mallorca reported that both UNWTO and the Secretary of State expressed interest in collaborating and carrying out initiatives from October onwards. The Mallorca authorities also invited UNWTO

and the Tourism Ministry to the island’s Sustainable Tourism and Safety events this autumn. The talks covered the projects which the administration is currently negotiating with the organisation, among them the entry of the Mallorca Tourism Foundation as an associated member to represent the island. Cladera explained the progress on obtaining the UNTWO.QUEST quality and excellence certificate. Also under discussion were the goals set out in the island government’s 2020-2023 Strategic Tourism Plan to promote the sector, which have been redefined in the face of the Covid-19 crisis. A further topic was Mallorca’s candidacy for the World Sustainable Tourism Observatory.

Straight back to crime Flooded by requests

PALMA police arrested a man for holding up a games hall just days after he was released from prison for a robbery three years earlier. The 47-year-old reportedly entered the establishment in the Rafal de Palma neighbourhood and demanded some €200, then left, but went back shortly afterwards with a knife. He threatened a member of staff to make her hand over the cash. A customer tried to push the aggressor away, leading to a bit of a struggle. The customer managed to free himself, but suffered

injuries to his face and arm. The thief ran out the games hall with the other man in hot pursuit. A passer-by joined in the chase. So too did police officers as soon as they arrived on the scene. Press reported that the aggressor got inside a building and up several floors. After calling for reinforcements in case he tried to get out the back of the building the officers went in. They found him trying to hide in the dark. Once again he tried to run for it and there was something of a scuffle before he was finally detained.

10 arrested after fight A VIOLENT clash between two groups in the centre of Palma in the early hours of Sunday June 21 ended in 10 arrests. Police reported that a bunch of youngsters had gathered to drink and party in the Plaza Porta d’ES Camp area not far from Palma seafront when a reveller from one group attacked one from the other bunch and a mass fight broke out. Fists and glass bottles were flying, leaving a number of the youngsters injured, although none seriously, police said. When police arrived they cordoned off the zone and detained five from each group. Police are investigating what set off the confrontation.

PALMA Council has received some 1,000 req u e s t s f ro m t h e c i t y ’s bars, cafes and restaurants to extend their terraces into parking areas to boost business in the face of government regulations on social distancing. To date the city authority has authorised more than 800 of the applications put in since the introduction of the measure in May. A further 100 or so have been turned down, mainly

for reasons like the spaces in question are for loading and unloading, are taxi stops or are not in front of the establishment. Local Police have detected several instances of bar and eatery terraces taking up too much space. Palma’s Citizen Participation and Interior Government councillor Alberto Jarabo called on establishment owners this week to comply with the rules on what he described as a “necessary measure” for

reactivating business. “With the arrival of summer we are seeing a relaxation in compliance with the decree, which we cannot allow,” he commented. The councillor made it clear businesses must only take up the space which corresponds to them, must remove tables and chairs when they close, and have to ensure there is the safe distance between tables.

Skips torched A FIRE which destroyed three rubbish skips in the early hours of Monday June 22 in the popular resort of Soller could have been started intentionally, according to the Local Police force. The police reported that as well as the destruction to the containers on Calle de Mar, the flames also damaged trees next to them. “There was a lot of danger,” the police posted on social media. An investigation into the incident has been opened.

Fishing hook threat FISHING hooks and nets are a real threat to sharks swimming in the waters of the Balearic Islands, according to the Shark Med organisation and the Fundacion Marilles marine conservation foundation. The entities are studying how sharks inhabiting the waters around the archipelago are fairing after Shark Med discovered that around half of one species have hooks or nets attached to them. An agreement between the two will see €30,000 allocated to studying the creatures in their natural habitat over the next year. The agreement comes after Shark Med spent a couple of years designing an innovative remote underwater video system for observing the sharks. Shark Med president Agusti Torres explained the main aim of the project is to gather scientific data which he said will provide the necessary tools for raising awareness about the importance of re-

Also, to promote what he described as the sustainable development of activities, like fishing, which most impact on sharks and demand “real changes.” Fundacin Marilles director Aniol Esteban stressed the protection of sharks is a “priority” for the foundation. He underlined the vital role they play in maintaining balance in the food chain and in the good health of marine ecosystems.

No crowds

CROWDS are out at town and village fiestas this summer in Mallorca due to the health risks from the Covid-19 pandemic. A total of 26 municipalities have signed an agreement with the FELIB Balearic Island Local Entities Federation under which they confirm that events “will not be celebrated as normal.” The agreement refers to the necessity of not staging anything involving large or uncontrolled gatherings, which would make social distancing difficult. The idea is that local authorities focus instead on alternative activities aimed at local residents to avoid an influx of large numbers of people from other localities and therefore larger crowds. The document recom-

mends each council tries to get consensus among all political groups on the maximum number of events to go ahead and modifies protocols in accordance with the situation in each locality. FELIB said the aim was to follow health authority safety and prevention recommendations, while not completely going without celebrations this year. “Fiestas this summer cannot be celebrated as we are traditionally used to,” stressed association president Antoni Salas. FELIB appealed to the islands’ population for their “understanding” given the current health crisis and called for their collaboration “to beat the virus, keeping to the safety measures.”

Pool thieves A GUARDIA CIVIL investigation into the theft of two swimming pools with a total value of some €16,000 from an Inca industrial estate had led to three arrests. The first theft was in March. The trio are suspected of getting into the premises on the Santa Maria industrial complex at night and using a lorry crane to pinch the pool valued at €7,000. Last week the business suffered a second pool robbery. This time the thieves took not only a nine-metre long pool, but also the trailer it was loaded onto. Inca Guardia Civil investigators reached the conclusion the same individuals were responsible for both robberies. The Guardia located one of the stolen pools being installed at a house in Son Ferriol. They found the second pool plus trailer in the property’s garage.

Fighting for safety A FAMILY of four who has been living in Spain for five years and currently resides just outside Barcelona have been left in dire straits

and let down by the very system they put their faith in. Euro Weekly News spoke directly with the couple who cannot be named for legal reasons. They are a mixed-race gay couple who have two sons, now seven and eight, brothers by mother, who were adopted seven years ago. The eldest is also of mixed race and they both have only ever known Spanish life and attended school in Spain, and this is their home. The couple are urgently trying to raise funds in order to keep a roof over their heads. Unfortunately, they have been left penniless by a corrupt lawyer who they trusted to manage their legal affairs with regards to a legal battle against homophobia, racism and bullying. When moving to Spain they followed all legal steps - registering residen-

cy, paying taxes, putting their sons into a local school. However, a short while ago they realised that the lawyer they had hired had not filed any paperwork as requested and, on his own admission, had been negligent in legal cases and, as such, is responsible for the family’s massive loss. Whilst also trying to set up a business in Spain, with so-called aid from the same lawyer, they lost all of their financial security and home,

along with all family possessions without notice. Unfortunately, since then, they have had to rely on the support of friends and local charities to keep a roof over their heads. The couple have sold everything possible and are now down to their last week of free accommodation before being put on to the streets. “We have tried all angles to get help and we have run dry, as it seems our official residency was

not filed properly by our lawyer and, as such, this has meant we have no support from the Catalan government even though they have helped with food vouchers, school fees etc for which we are so grateful,” said one of the partners. Their friend Marina has set up a GoFundMe page ‘Support a family with legal costs and homelessness’ to raise money to support them regarding accommodation and legal fees. Will UK assets invite a bigger tax bill after Brexit? While Brexit itself will not affect the double tax agreements that determine which country has the right to tax expatriates, two key changes are set to happen from 2021 that may change your tax treatment. First, UK assets will no longer be EU/European Economic Area (EEA) assets. In some cases, this means they may stop receiving favourable tax treatment abroad. Second, the UK government will no longer be bound by EU freedom of movement rules for capital, giving them more scope to tax nonresidents. Even without Brexit, once you are living abroad it is sensible to review whether holding on to UK assets is still in your best interests. UK property The UK has gradually increased the tax burden on property for overseas residents. For example, after years without capital gains tax liability, ‘non-resident capital gains tax’ (NRCGT) started applying to nonUK residents selling UK residential

Political Viewpoint from Spain by DAMON MITCHELL HAVING seen the viral video of a p o l i c e o f f i c e r i n H a c k n e y, London on the ground being attacked by youths who don’t seem to care about any consequence, one can’t help but think that the balance between democracy and freedom are being pushed to the limits in the UK. Policing by consent and not by force is the philosophy by which the UK has always tried to uphold the law. However, as pointed out by our man in the know when it comes to Spanish politics and rights, Jose Maria Rodrigo “The public respect towards the police in the last couple of weeks is shocking from a Spanish point of view and reflects a political problem which is clearly reflected in society. Without a balance between democracy and freedom towards its communities.” Spanish police have been highly criticised by some of the English press in the past with their actions claimed to be ‘Draconian’ or ‘disproportionate.’

H o w e v e r, S p a i n ’ s t h r e e m a i n p o l i c e f o rc e s s e e m t o be able to balance out rights and openness. The Local Police, as their name points out are close to the communities and police by consent. The National Police are focused in larger towns and cities and deal with harder types of crime and riots. It is their job to police by force when the situation requires them to maintain the status quo between democracy and freedom for all. The Guardia Civil is perhaps the most versatile of the three as they will take the role of Local Police in the villages and back up the National Police when needed in riots. Everybody in Spain has been able to see how these forces’ no nonsense attitude to policing has guaranteed a lockdown which has seen excellent results, making residents feel safe. To be able to police by consent there has to be a balance between communities and its police and from a Spanish point of view “the UK politicians have had a counter-productive attitude towards long running issues which have been reflected these past weeks on the streets of Britain,” said Jose Maria.

Two week review GBP The biggest loser Frequent flips in sentiment sent the pound hither and yon. Investors swung between optimism that central bank and government stimulus would help the global economy and pessimism that a new wave of the pandemic would close it down again. Although the pound is neither a safe-haven nor overtly risky, it is sterling - a currency notorious for almost random rallies and retreats. In the end it did more retreating than rallying, finishing at the back of the field with an average loss of 1.1%. The UK economic data were no more unhelpful than those from elsewhere. Inflation slowed to a near-four-year low at 0.5%. More than 600k jobs were lost in May and jobseeker claims increased

by 529k. The rate of unemployment in April, unchanged on the month at 3.9%, did not take into account the almost nine million people on furlough. After a phone call to Brussels the prime minister said “there is no reason why the outline of a deal cannot be sealed by the end of July” but investors were not entirely convinced. The Bank of England left interest rates unchanged and increased its asset purchase programme by £100 billion to £745 billion.

EUR Still waiting for the recovery package The euro fell an average of 0.7%, losing four fifths of a US cent. It strengthened by half a

cent against the pound and was just about unchanged against the Swiss franc. Compared with a month ago the euro is a cent fir mer against sterling. Economic data from the euro zone passed by largely unnoticed. The highest-profile numbers were for the consumer price index. They showed inflation slowing from 0.3% to 0.1% in May, close to a four-year low. The pan-Euroland reading comprised national inflation rates ranging from -1.8% in Estonia, through 0.6% in Germany to +2.2% in Hungary. ZEW’s surveys of economic sentiment among analysts found a third consecutive improvement in Germany, by 12 points to 63.4, and a similar rise in the euro zone as a whole, to 58.6. Company Reducing carbon emissions faked likes FACEBOOK has announced that it has not only banned the Madrid­based MGP25 Cyberint Services for placing likes on Instagram accounts for profit but will also be taking action against the company. It believes that the company created a special computer tool to gen­ erate likes in order to boost interest in the clients it represented. A spokesperson for Facebook said “The defendant’s service was designed to evade Instagram’s restrictions against fake engagement by mimicking the Instagram official app in the way that it connected to our systems.”

THE John Lewis Partnership, which owns department stores and Wait­ rose supermarkets in the UK has an­ nounced that it is stepping up its commitment to reducing carbon emissions by building a dedicated biomethane gas filling station. This will enable its largest heavy goods vehicles to use a low­carbon alternative to diesel and in addition, it plans to stop using fossil fuels across its entire 4,800 strong trans­ port fleet by 2030. The new biomethane gas filling station will be built in conjunction with Air Liquide and will open at the

Partnership’s head office in Bracknell in December 2020, making it the business’s first on­site gas filling sta­ tion. It will facilitate the conversion of the Bracknell Waitrose fleet to biomethane and complement gas filling stations already in use near to John Lewis and Waitrose regional distribution centres in Leyland, Lan­ cashire, and in Northampton. Serving some 120 Waitrose heavy goods vehicles, the lorries will run on biomethane made from food waste and food processing waste materials rather than diesel which will reduce CO2 emissions by 80 per cent.

Over the next seven years, it is es­ timated the Bracknell site alone will save over 70,000 tonnes of CO2, equivalent to the carbon footprint produced by over 13,000 UK house­ holds. Another addition will be the introduction of 1,750 electric vans alongside 750 refrigerated trailers converted from diesel to electric dri­ ve. In addition, the Partnership’s 1,300 strong car fleet will become 100 per cent electric and any remain­ ing vehicles that could not be con­ verted to biomethane or electric will use hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) biodiesel.

for the extension of the State of Alarm, the prime minister had agreed to pledge €2.5 billion in ICO (state) bank guarantees. Most of the balance of €1.75 billion is also being made as loans so the tourism sector will simply increase its debt and hope for the best.

It will all be too late

AS you read this, thousands of black men, women and children are being slaughtered and enslaved in Nigeria. Black genocide is still a daily occurrence in many parts of the world and black youngsters are being killed on our streets in ever increasing numbers. All in all it is an appalling and utterly tragic situation. But why are we seeing no demonstrations concerning these issues? Where are all the marchers and BLM protests? What’s happened to all the black leaders appearing in the media, decrying the situation and urging governments to ‘do something’? Personally I only discovered most of these facts with research. So can anyone please enlighten me why it is that black lives only appear to really matter when members of the white community are involved? It simply doesn’t make sense; unless there is some ulterior motive afoot! Ah well, only time and tide will answer that question. What is more worrying is the amount of air time the main stream media gives to those who support these ‘causes.’ On the social media, over the last few weeks, numerous, often extremely

Intelligent black and ethnic men and women of all ages have been putting forward strong arguments as to why they actually don’t feel oppressed at all and affirming that all opportunities are there for both black and white, with many praising the system and the societies that have made them successful. Why don’t we see

any of these people on the main stream? Why aren’t some of them given the same amount of air time that the decriers and dissenters receive? Well I’ll tell you why, the left wing media are the pawns and propaganda outlets of the money men; the true shadowy manipulators of the societies we live in. It is also the reason that large conglomerates, often inexplicably seem to have leftist leanings. This is because left wing policies -

higher benefits, nationalisation etc, encourage people to rely more on the state, which in turn makes the peasants more manageable. Most of the problems that beset the general public stem from money, or the lack of it. But those who control unlimited amounts, and I’m talking billions or even trillions, have a whole different agenda. The only achievement these mega rich investors crave is power. Running the world and its citizens becomes their overriding priority. To achieve their ambitions they first need to sever the roots, lower moral and bring chaos, division and hardship to the masses. Well they are already succeeding in that. And rest assured there is a great deal more to come. All I can say is heaven help our gullible children. They are the unsuspecting, mostly unpaid, and utterly naïve army of these aspiring New World dictators. Sadly, by the time they realise, it will all be too late. Another Leapy rant? Losing a family companion AROUND a month ago I had to say a very sad goodbye to my baby boy, a member of our family, my friend always at my side. It was a very difficult time anyway and added into that the current crisis, it was problematic to find a vet to do as we wanted and have his final moments with us at home after eating his favourite meal. In the end we had to take Chalkie to the clinic, both myself and my family were absolutely heartbroken as we had to say our goodbyes and choose who would be with him. For anyone that has lost a pet recently I wanted to share this poem with you.

A MAN who had been queueing since 5.30am for the 10am opening of IKEA insisted it was a nobrainer. “Last week we queued for three hours to get access to the council tip to chuck out all the junk and tat we wanted rid of during lockdown,” he moaned. “And now we need to queue for another three hours to replace it with more junk and tat.” Traffic jams and long queues built up, sometimes for hours, outside most of the UK’s recycling centres before they reopened for the first time since lockdown. This after news that fly-tipping had meanwhile quadrupled in some areas. People are creatures of habit even if that habit happens to be a combination of standing in a queue, IKEA

and relentless heat. And with the recent reopening in England of non-essential shops, you have to wonder just how many of those in the winding queues at big stores and retail parks - a 40 per cent increase in footfall - moaned as well. But moaning about it all is just part of the habit. Sitting in your car on the M25 for five hours on a scorchingly hot Bank Holiday weekend going nowhere falls into the same category. You’d have imagined this confinement might have made those inclined to this sort of ritual reflect on things a bit. Unfortunately, that’s not the British way and very soon the UK will revert to being the over-polluted country that everybody insisted had to change. McDonald’s opened in some places too. The queues of cars stretched for miles, people desperate to

get back to some kind of normality and for them the three golden arches are it, queues be damned. Lockdown has different effects on different people. If the mantra of the past few weeks was Stay at Home, it’s now Have Fun Outside (but Sensibly, please!). The new normal’s looking more like the old normal every day. But it’s not all bad news. No queues reportedly in Castle Barnard for those keen to get out and test their eyesight... ALL LIVES MATTER DEAR Euro Weekly, I don’t always agree with Leapy, but this week, he is right. Black lives matter, but so do the lives of people of any colour. The removal of statues of historical figures involved in the slave trade, only tells one side of the story. Black tribes, have rounded up and sold slaves from other tribes, for centuries, to Arabs, before whites became involved, so black people should take some of the blame for this deplorable exploitation of their own people. OUR VIEW The bigger picture DURING the Covid isolation period in Spain it was very, very rare to see homeless people on the street any longer. You would get to see the same old faces in doorways or outside supermarkets but they disappeared. When I eventually did see one, I was walking home from work as I am classed as an essential worker, there were two known homeless men and the police passed by without giving them a second glance. These men were local, they had no safety masks and am pretty sure they weren’t using hand sanitiser. What it made me think is that if there was the possibility of ridding the streets of homeless people and beggars now, during a health crisis, surely that means that the space is constantly available to shelter and provide for them. Local sports stadiums were said to be at capacity from sheltering them and various ordinary homeless shelters. Now, most of these people survive on handouts from the public and during the pandemic, there was also no public in the streets, no holidaymakers. How did they manage? I did fear that they would be an easy target for the virus and also that it sadly may kill a huge number of them off. However, I am happy to say that since the virus has begun to disappear, those faces have reappeared. A friend, I suppose you could call him, Jose Luis, survived through the virus, sleeping in the streets with nobody to collect coppers from, he had not been able to get a space in the local stadium. In talking to him recently it did bring up the point that if the government can provide them with basic food and the means to stay alive and shelter during a crisis, why can they not do this any other time when these people are suffering, ill and dying? Is it something that will change because of this realisation? Let’s hope so.

It’s all wrong in so many ways MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man WE are now supposedly living in the new ‘normal’ but in fact the world has now officially gone bonkers. There are demonstrations all over the world supporting Black Lives Matter which, of course, is a legitimate, worthy and correct cause. But what doesn’t do these demos any good is the looting and violence that entails by, what looks to me, like outside influence. I saw many kids smashing windows and cars with skate boards. The perpetrators were all different races, but they didn’t seem to be there except to cause havoc. Then you have Trump getting troops using tear gas and rubber bullets to wade through a perfectly peaceful demonstration so that the lunatic Donny can have a photo taken with a Bible outside a boarded up church. We also have the situation where an episode of Fawlty Towers has been removed because of racism. Little Britain removed too for its racist overtones. No mention about the mockery of a dis-

abled person in a wheelchair. Racism is a terrible thing. I am Jewish and have had to deal with it my whole life. I still have an anti-Semitic neighbour that will make some remark every time our paths cross. A reference to ‘you lot’ or calling me a ‘4 by 2’ or a mention of camps. If you are going to get rid of racist stuff in the arts, you must get rid of Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice because of the Shylock character. This was Hitler’s favourite play and was played on the radio two nights after Kristallnacht in 1938 to show how bad Jews were. Let’s not forget Charles Dickens. We have to get rid of Oliver Twist with Fagin portrayed as a thieving Jew. That’s racist isn’t it? Othello was played by Orson Welles with a black face. Let’s ban that too. And of course there are both versions of the Jazz Singer. The original has Al Jolson using black make up and the remake with Neil Diamond and his black face. The diabolical performance by Lord Laurence Olivier with his prosthetic nose and ridiculous accent. All wrong in so many ways. Of course, I don’t actually think any of this should be banned at all. I’m just trying to make a point. It never offended me. I watched it all and that’s where it ended. Even my anti-Semitic neighbour I just dismiss as an ignorant twunt.

Knowing Right From Wrong With Bipolar Disorder Is a bipolar person conscious about what is right and wrong at the time they do something wrong? THE answer is a YES and NO… depends on the person, and how severely ill they might have been at the time the behaviour happened. For many of us living with bipolar disorder we can experience psychotic episodes at some point during our illness. Psychosis involves loss of touch with reality. So during that time, someone with bipolar disorder may be acting under the hallucinations or delusions. Under these circumstances, we aren’t aware of our actions. Bad sleeping patterns or insomnia, is a common problem for people with bipolar disord e r. S l e e p i s e x tremely important, and sleep disturbance most often t r igger s m o o d episodes. I monitor my sleeping, and over the years h a v e learned that on my third night of disruptive sleep or lack of sleep I should start to worry and also mention it to a family member. Its also important to distinguish what kind of sleeping problem you are having, is it trying to fall asleep but unable to ? or is it that feeling of ‘not needing to sleep,’ or is it just feeling tired constantly… That feeling of tiredness is usually linked to the depressive side of bipolar whereas the not need-

ing to sleep can be linked to the mania side. When manic, your sense of boundaries are screwed. That filter that most people use and have in place no longer exists. You can come across as rude or harsh. Also during the mania ,I also don’t fully remember how down I feel during the depressive times, which can be hard for your loved ones to know where exactly you are in your cycle. One day you’re full of life and the next you can be down in the dumps. However being bipolar should not be a get-out-of-jail-free card. THE UK will switch to Apple and Google technology for its Covid-19 test-and-trace app, its home-grown system was not working well enough on Apple’s iPhone. The test and trace programme is reportedly key to reopening the country but has been dogged by problems. The app developed by the National Health Service (NHS) was initially expected to be rolled out nationwide in May but did not materialise. Dido Harding, head of the test-and-trace programme, and Matthew Gould, chief executive of the health service’s technology unit NHSX said “We have agreed to share our own innovative work ... with Google and Apple, while using their solution to address some of the specific technical
