After such a long period of inactivity, flights are landing in Spain without quarantine, there’s movement across borders and provinces, children can play in parks and the economy can start to get back on its feet.

There has never been a more crucial time to take the bull by the horns and MAKE the future happen.

The global pandemic thrust the country into an unprecedented era that has hit the Costas hard, but now they are braced and ready to welcome locals and tourists alike.

Beaches open.

The regions are awash with excellent restaurants, bars and cafes offering a typically friendly Spanish service.

And local shops and businesses will now be relying on us to help

them rebuild and stay afloat, hoping that money that wasn’t spent during shut down will rejuvinate trade.

The sun, sea and sand have already seen thousands return to the region’s world-

famous beaches which have reopened, with necessary safety measures of course, and there’s an umistakable positive vibe as the wheels of tourism begin to move again.

Costas are investing heavily in promoting their well-publicised and hidden treasures, keen to draw holidaymakers back to where they should be, while at the same time budgeting millions to help the industry along the way.

As Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, said in his pre-end of State of Alarm speech: “Now it’s time for recovery, laying the foundation for a new economy.

There is another lasting tribute we can pay to those who have been on the front lines and to those we have lost: to put this country back on its feet.”

WE did it.

We followed the instructions of our President, Pedro Sanchez, regardless of our political inclinations and by doing what we should we went from being one of the world’s most dangerous countries to one of the safest.

Regardless of nationality, we came together and did everything asked of us, living for 98 days in a world that only weeks before we didn’t know existed.

We closed our businesses, locked up our children, shielded our elderly and vulnerable, facing a frightening world of social distancing with remarkable dignity in our masks and gloves.

Each night at 8pm we applauded those keeping us safe and we formed amazing self-sacrificing groups who cooked, baked, shopped and delivered for others with no thought for themselves.

We showed tolerance and compassion as we queued for anything and everything and if we worried about our families’ health, finances and futures, we

worried in silence.

As businesspeople we, too, suffered financially but as an essential business we had to continue despite high overheads and little income.

Now, after 98 days, the State of Alarm has been lifted and our lifeline to businesses along the coasts of Spain has been restored.

“Welcome, we have missed you, and we need you,” we say to returning visitors because we might not be tourist-based but our clients are.

We, too want a busy landscape of bars, restaurants, beaches and hotels where visitors receive the best service they have ever had. We want them to buy properties, bring their skill sets here and their families.

We want them to rebook in August and October and to come back at Christmas.

More than anything else we want our wonderful business community to stop suffering. We don’t want to see any more closures, just busy and contented owners who are being rewarded

for their patience and dedication in preventing Covid-19 from robbing more lives while their own were put on hold.

As a business community we have weathered recessions, but nothing like that of 2008 and no sooner did we emerge than we were confronted first by Brexit and then by Covid-19.

Life will never be the same again, but we are convinced that doesn’t mean this year can’t be turned around.

It will be hard and worrying at times, but we are made of tough stuff, us expats, and as pioneers and entrepreneurs we know we shall get through.

Good luck to every single business-owner out there: we wish you every success in the New Now. And we are sure that by the end of the year we will be toasting together, celebrating because we all made it through.

For everyone Pound store Safe beaches A FAVOURITE British high street bargain store has defied coronavirus and opened its brand new store for business.

Poundland, known as Dealz in Spain, has launched in Nerja. The store will be selling Span-

ish and international food, cleaning products, toiletries, sun lotion, animal goods and clothes. The shop in Calle San Miguel will be open from 9am to 11pm from Monday to Saturday and most of its stock will be €1.50.

THE Torrox Town Hall has launched the promotional cleaning campaign ‘Do it for you, do it for everyone’ with the aim of teaching the public the importance of keeping the area clean. Mayor of Torrox, Óscar Medina, pointed out that, “keeping Torrox clean is a matter for everyone,” while explaining the importance of recycling. The campaign also encourages the use of litter bins, both in the streets and on the beaches.

SURVEILLANCE: Lifeguard service with almost 120 people.

THE Almuñecar Town Hall has already started the surveillance and lifeguard service on the beaches of the municipality with a total of almost 120 people, 78 security guards and almost 40 lifeguards, along with health workers and coordinators.

These people will be in charge of the 19 kilometres of coast, from Cantarriján, on the border with Nerja, to Barranco de Enmedio, which limits on the east side with Salobreña, where beaches of more than two kilo-

metres or numerous coves of different sizes can be found.

The mayor of Almuñecar, Trinidad Herrera, stated that “the image of all the people who go to work on the beaches, both in lifeguard and beach surveillance, is a success for Almuñecar, because it is an image that represents safe beaches and that we deserve as residents,” said the mayor after posing with all the aforementioned troops, who were joined by Civil Protection and Local Police.

Greater demand WITH 25 per cent of Nerja’s residents suffering from lack of food during the health crisis and increased unemployment due to local businesses closing, there has been a greater demand for help at the Nerja Solidaria foodbank.

Nerja’s Social Services were able to add to supplies with daily food donations to cater to 1,500 families each week.

Now, although demand has dissipated as residents are able to return to employment, there are still a high number of those who depend on the service.

Judy Rust created the Nerja Maro Via Comida Foodlink which connects growers in Maro who have surplus produce to families in need in the area. With their help and some kindhearted friends she has managed to raise enough funds to cover deliveries of fresh vegetables and fruit from Social Services to those in need for the next two months.

THE beaches of Torre del Mar, La Caleta de Vélez and Benajarafe are the first beaches at the national level to obtain the ‘Safe Tourism Certified’ seal awarded by the Institute of Spanish Tourist Quality.

This was announced last Friday morning by the councillor for Beaches of the Municipality of VélezMálaga, Jesús Pérez Atencia, and the mayor of Vélez-Málaga, Antonio Moreno Ferrer. Both have conveyed their “satisfaction” with the confirmation of this new certification.

Through new protocols, ‘Safe Tourism Certified’ aims to confirm the implementation of a prevention system for health risks against Covid- 19.

responsibility that Nerjeños and Mareños have displayed since the start of the pandemic, to maintain discipline and avoid contagion.”

Nerja’s playgrounds were sealed on March 13, a day before the State of Alarm was decreed throughout the country, due to the concern of the town hall about the risk of contagion in public spaces, and according to the recommendations made that same day by the Governing Council of the Junta de Andalucía.

The delivery of these cards began last week and can be requested at Servicios Sociales Comunitarios or at any Cruz Roja headquarters.

The cards are recharged monthly with an amount proportional to the number of people that make up the family, said amount being €150 for one person, €200 for two or three and €250 for four or more.

Silly billy WANTED A DRINK: A small goat was inside the pool of half a metre of water.

ALMUÑECAR firefighters rescued a small mountain goat doe, last week, that had fallen into an abandoned pool in the Cármenes del Mar urbanisation in Cerro Gordo, La Herradura.

A spokesman for the firefighters said, “The rescue was requested by a resident of the urbanisation.

When we arrived, we noticed that it was a very small goat that was inside the pool that had almost

half a metre of water from the last time it rained.

“While a firefighter pushed the animal to one end of the pool for the rescue, another colleague, leaned down and was able to free it,” said the spokesman, who said the goat probably fell in whilst trying to have a drink of water.

THE organisers of the Concurso Tradicional de Verdiales–Choque de Pandas, has announced the suspension of festivities scheduled for September 19 due to the health crisis.

The councillor for Culture, Clara Perles said, “Due to its characteristics, it is a fiesta where security measures and distance between people cannot be guaranteed; another option would break its essence and nature.”

So far, all summer events in the town have been cancelled for security reasons, such as the La Cala del Moral, Rincón de la Victoria and Torre de Benagalbón Ferias.

Lost load OVERTURNED: An excavator was used to clear the rubble.

A L O R RY h a s o v e r t u r n e d o n Tu e s d a y, June 23 on a road in Velez-Malaga, without its driver being seriously injured. The traffic accident occurred a ro u n d 1 1 . 3 0 a m . A witness alerted emergency services asking them to attend Camino de Algarrobo.

Local Police officers from the municipality and firefighters rushed to the scene. The policemen had to use an excavator due to the amount of rubble that the lorry was carrying that had emptied onto

the pavement, according to information provided by the emergency coordinating centre.

Although at the time of going to press there was no official data about how the accident occurred, everything indicates that the lorry was going down a hill when its driver when making a manoeuvre to avoid the roundabout, lost control and ended up overturning.

It will also be investigated whether it was due to a failure in the braking system.

Fugitive found

WARRANT IN FORCE: Engaged in the transport, export and marketing of drugs.

OFFICERS of the National Police have detained a 37-year-old Moroccan man in Velez-Malaga, who had an international arrest warrant in force, having been convicted of a crime of drug trafficking by the judicial authorities of his country of origin.

The fugitive known as AJ was located last Thursday June 18 in Velez-Malaga and once officers were able to confirm that it was the correct person, he was arrested. As stated in the search order, the fugitive

was engaged in the transport, export and marketing of drugs.

At the time of arrest, the defendant was preparing to cross the Guergarate border post in Western Sahara in a lorry loaded with more than 7,000 kilos of cannabis resin hidden among a load of A-4 paper. The crime committed has a maximum sentence of 10 years.

The arrested has been placed at the disposal of the Juzgado Central de Instrucción de la Audiencia Nacional.

Employment boost NEARLY €296,000 will go to projects set up by the Nerja Town Hall for the recruitment of unemployed people affected by the coronavirus crisis, within the Plan of Activation, Promotion and Reactivation of Employment (AIR) approved by the Andalucian Government.

This was detailed by the Andalucian parliamentarian, Carlos Hernández White, after recalling the strong dependence of this area on tourism, a sector strongly affected by the slowdown in recent months.

Life savers FIREFIGHTERS from the Diputacion Provincial de Malaga prevented a man of Romanian nationality from carrying out his threats to throw himself from the top of the wall of Velez-Malaga in the Plaza de la Constitucion, late on Sunday night June 21.

The man was a friend of the father of the young man of the same nationality who fell from the same place on June 12 , apparently by accident, and who had to be transferred urgently with multiple injuries to the Hospital Regional de Málaga.

For more than an hour, residents and officers of the Local and National Police, tried to convince the man to come down, until firefighters finally moved in to bring the man down. The reasons why the man adopted this attitude are unknown.

Heartbreaking ON Thursday June 18, the Royal Canine Society of Spain (RSCE) reported that the abandonment of dogs in the country has increased by 25 per cent since the start of the de-escalation period.

Spain is one of the worst countries in Europe regarding the abandonment of pets, as each year 140,000 cats and dogs are left

on the streets.

The RSCE communicated that at the end of May about 2,000 dogs were abandoned in Spain.

This period coincides with the first two weeks of the de-escalation plan as well as the emergence of summer and the end of the State of Alarm.

The RSCE warned of a 50 per cent rise in the

Pedal Boat rescue WHEN a report was received by the volunteer fire brigade in Tossa de Mar that a diver was in difficulty and needed assistance, no proper rescue boat was immediately available.

The diver could only be reached by sea and the firemen decided that his health was more important than their dig-

nity so they borrowed two kayaks and a tourist pedal boat to get to him.

Happily, they were able to offer basic medical assistance until a rescue boat arrived at which time he was transferred via the pedal boat and then taken by emergency services to a medical centre for

Ferocious wildfire A FEROCIOUS wildfire ripped through the Sierra Cabrera mountains on Sunday June 21, burning through 180 hectares before firefighters had the fast-moving blaze under control by midday on Monday.

The fire broke out early Sunday afternoon. Initial reports said it started in the Llanos de Anton zone of Carboneras, but later reports said the origin was in El Moro in Mojacar.

By night-time the flames had raced through easily burning terrain in Mojacar and Turre.

The Andalucia Infoca wildfire prevention service reported that five planes and seven helicopters were battling to put out the blaze alongside teams of forest firefighters. The steep terrain made it impossible to get fire engines near to the flames.

The intensity of the blaze was such it turned the evening sky in Mojacar a burnt orange, while the smoke could be seen as far away as Aguilas in Murcia.

licopters and planes rejoining the efforts when the light came up. After an anxious 24 hours, there was relief for local residents by midday on Monday when Infoca reported the wildfire was under control.

Firefighting teams remained working on Tuesday to ensure nothing was still smouldering. There were no reports anyone was hurt in the fire or of damage to property, but two families were evacuated from their homes as a precaution. The BIIF Forest Fires Investigation Brigade are working to determine what sparked off the blaze.

Policing by consent and not by force is the philosophy by which the UK has always tried to uphold the law. However, as pointed out by our man in the know when it comes to Spanish politics and rights, Jose Maria Rodrigo “The public respect towards the police in the last couple of weeks is shocking from a Spanish point of view and reflects a political problem which is clearly reflected in society. Without a balance between democracy and freedom towards its communities.”

However, Spain’s three main police forces seem to be able to balance out rights and openness.

The Local Police, as their name points out are close to the commu-

nities and police by consent.

The National Police are focused in larger towns and cities and deal with harder types of crime and riots.

I t i s t h e i r j o b t o p o l i c e b y f o rc e when the situation requires them to maintain the status quo between democracy and freedom for all.

The Guardia Civil is per haps the most versatile of the three as they will take the role of Local Police in the villages and back up the National Police when needed in riots.

Everybody in Spain has been able to see how these forces’ no nonsense attitude to policing has guaranteed a lockdown which has seen excellent results, making residents feel safe.

To be able to police by consent there has to be a balance between communities and its police and from a Spanish point of view “the UK politicians have had a counterproductive attitude towards long running issues which have been reflected these past weeks on the streets of Britain,” said Jose Maria.

Company Reducing carbon emissions faked likes FACEBOOK has announced that it has not only banned the Madrid­based MGP25 Cyberint Services for placing likes on Instagram accounts for profit but will also be taking action against the company. It believes that the company created a special computer tool to gen­ erate likes in order to boost interest in the clients it represented.

A spokesperson for Facebook said “The defendant’s service was designed to evade Instagram’s restrictions against fake engagement by mimicking the Instagram official app in the way that it connected to our systems.”

THE John Lewis Partnership, which owns department stores and Wait­ rose supermarkets in the UK has an­ nounced that it is stepping up its commitment to reducing carbon emissions by building a dedicated biomethane gas filling station.

This will enable its largest heavy goods vehicles to use a low­carbon alternative to diesel and in addition, it plans to stop using fossil fuels across its entire 4,800 strong trans­ port fleet by 2030.

The new biomethane gas filling station will be built in conjunction with Air Liquide and will open at the

Partnership’s head office in Bracknell in December 2020, making it the business’s first on­site gas filling sta­ tion. It will facilitate the conversion of the Bracknell Waitrose fleet to biomethane and complement gas filling stations already in use near to John Lewis and Waitrose regional distribution centres in Leyland, Lan­ cashire, and in Northampton.

Serving some 120 Waitrose heavy goods vehicles, the lorries will run on biomethane made from food waste and food processing waste materials rather than diesel which will reduce CO2 emissions by 80 per cent.

Over the next seven years, it is es­ timated the Bracknell site alone will save over 70,000 tonnes of CO2, equivalent to the carbon footprint produced by over 13,000 UK house­ holds. Another addition will be the introduction of 1,750 electric vans alongside 750 refrigerated trailers converted from diesel to electric dri­ ve. In addition, the Partnership’s 1,300 strong car fleet will become 100 per cent electric and any remain­ ing vehicles that could not be con­ verted to biomethane or electric will use hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) biodiesel.

It will all be too late

A DAILY OCCURRENCE: But why are we seeing no demonstrations concerning these issues?

OTHERS THINK IT thousands of black men, women and children are being slaughtered and enslaved in Nigeria.

Black genocide is still a daily occurrence in many parts of the world and black youngsters are being killed on our streets in ever increasing numbers. All in all it is an appalling and utterly tragic situation. But why are we seeing no demonstrations concerning these issues? Where are all the marchers and BLM protests? What’s happened to all the black leaders appearing in the media, decrying the situation and urging governments to ‘do something’?

Personally I only discovered most of these facts with research. So can anyone please enlighten me why it is that black lives only appear to really matter when members of the white community are involved? It simply doesn’t make sense; unless there is some ulterior motive afoot!

Ah well, only time and tide will answer that question. What is more worrying is the amount of air

time the main stream media gives to those who support these ‘causes.’ On the social media, over the last few weeks, numerous, often extremely articulate members of the black community have appeared, decrying the BLM movement and its methods.

Intelligent black and ethnic men and women of all ages have been putting forward strong arguments as to why they actually don’t feel oppressed at all and affirming that all opportunities are there for both black and white, with many praising the system and the societies that have made them successful.

Why don’t we see any of these people on the main stream? Why aren’t some of them given the same amount of air time that the decriers and dissenters receive?

Well I’ll tell you why, the left wing media are the pawns and propaganda outlets of the money men; the true shadowy manipulators of the societies we live in. It is also the reason that large conglomerates, often inexplicably seem to have leftist leanings. This is because left wing policies - higher benefits, nationali-

sation etc, encourage people to rely more on the state, which in turn makes the peasants more manageable.

Most of the problems that beset the general public stem from money, or the lack of it. But those who control unlimited amounts, and I’m talking billions or even trillions, have a whole different agenda.

The only achievement these mega rich investors crave is power. Running the world and its citizens becomes their overriding priority. To achieve their ambitions they first need to sever the roots, lower moral and bring chaos, division and hardship to the masses. Well they are already succeeding in that.

And rest assured there is a great deal more to come.

All I can say is heaven help our gullible children.

They are the unsuspecting, mostly unpaid, and utterly naïve army of these aspiring New World dictators.

Sadly, by the time they realise, it will all be too late.

I c a n s a y , emerging from this unusual era, I feel alive. If I can keep my secret for another week, well let’s see... We all have secrets, but as you know - bad news travels fast.

Over the years, I found myself being approached by strangers in nightclubs at 4am, pleading that I never write about them. Some, sending bottles of Champagne to my table. Losing a family companion AROUND a month ago I had to say a very sad goodbye to my baby boy, a member of our family, my friend always at my side.

It was a very difficult time anyway and added into that the current crisis, it was problematic to find a vet to do as we wanted and have his final moments with us at home after eating his favourite meal.

In the end we had to take Chalkie to the clinic, both myself and my family were absolutely heartbroken as we had to say our goodbyes and choose who would be with him.

For anyone that has lost a pet recently I wanted to share this poem with you.

CRUEL MURDERS: Demonstrations for and against causes always seem to start well before going too far.

DAVID WORBOYS DOES our perception of skin colour over-ride that of nationality? Does a white Englishman relate more closely to a black compatriot or a white American?

Let us imagine that the cruel murder of George Floyd had occurred in Milton Keynes; that a white English policeman had knelt on the neck of a black British innocent man called Foreman Patterson. Would the United States have reacted as we have reacted in England to Floyd’s death?

I would suspect that, because Patterson is not American, whatever the demonstrations in the UK, it would not have attracted much attention across the Atlantic. And we have a kind of precedent.

In 2005 Jean Charles de Menezes, an unar med, innocent citizen was shot dead by police for boarding an underground train, following instructions from Metropolitan Police Commander Cressida Dick. The response was not global protests against murder by the police. On the contrary, Cressida Dick was showered with a succession of honours, promoted to the highest office in the police force and recently honoured as a Dame of the British Empire. This response goes way beyond the usual kind of cover-up by the Establishment.

Apparently, Jean Charles was mistaken for a terrorist because he did not look British enough.

This tragedy did not involve the gratuitous brutality meted out by too many American police, but it was a cruel slap in the face for the family of Jean Charles. He happened to be a decent law-abiding white Brazilian. In the UK he has been long forgotten. What if he had been a US citizen?

Demonstrations for and against causes always seem to start well before going too far. We have seen this with Women’s Lib, Gay Rights, Save the Planet and even Animal Rights movements. Protests turn violent and demands become more extreme and more inappropriate. So it is with statues.

There should be no statues to any person who has owned or traded slaves, regardless of how those slaves were treated or how philanthropic the slave owner had otherw i s e b e e n . H o w e v e r, t h e i r c r i m e s should not be removed from history books. This would be akin to Holocaust denial.

I believe statues of leading figures who simply had controversial views should remain. In the democracy I was brought up in, these people are entitled to their opinion. If those views have not been expressed to incite violence, discrimination or oppression, they should remain as part of our history, warts included.

Black lives were not persecuted by Churchill, Gandhi or, certainly, Mandela. In their differing roles they were all champions of freedom.

In the US ‘Gone with the Wind’ is being questioned; in the UK it’s Fawlty Towers. How sensitive are our societies becoming?

CHALKIE: We had to say our goodbyes.

That feeling of tiredness is usually linked to the depressive side of bipolar whereas the not needing to sleep can be linked to the ma-

nia side.

When manic, your sense of boundaries are screwed. That filter that most people use and have in place no longer exists.

You can come across as rude or harsh.

Also during the mania ,I also don’t fully remember how down I feel during the depressive times, which can be hard for your loved ones to know where exactly you are in your cycle. One day you’re full of life and the next you can be down in the dumps.

However being bipolar should not be a get-out-of-jailfree card. We usually manage to hide the worst side of ourselves from people that don’t truly know us, as we tend to be on ‘edge’ and only feel comfortable and s a f e around people that do know the REAL us, so we do have a degree of control over our actions and behaviour, however we don’t often know right from wrong in that split moment, usually when everything settles down we can see reason.

MANY expats pack their bags and go back to blighty when they are ill. I can’t understand this. The health service in Spain is superb and I should know. I have used the service in the Balearics, the Canaries and in Andalucia and I haven’t a single complaint about any of them.

Some time ago I was diagnosed with cancer, like thousands of other people. The care that I received was absolutely spot on throughout my operations and my chemo and radiotherapy. EveRyone was cheerful and polite and extremely helpful.

Although my treatment ended a few months ago, the ongoing care is faultless. I didn’t expect it to be very good through the lockdown but it was. Some of my appointments were cancelled and the oncologist called me instead. One time, however, I told the doctor that I wasn’t

his private phone number so that I could call him if I felt unsure about anything or if I felt I needed to see him again.

I felt the need to call him on

a couple of occasions and he called me back within the hour and made an appointment for me. During lockdown he sent me an email so that I

could carry it in the car in case I was stopped by the police during my trip to Malaga.

Everybody that I came into contact with was kind, considerate and extremely professional. I just know in my heart that I wouldn’t have had better healthcare care anywhere else.

Now that the treatments are over and I am dealing with the side effects on a daily basis, that friendly attitude is still there, from the pharmacists who have been giving me my medications, to the local clinic, nurses and my GP. I can honestly say that I was never worried about the fact that I had cancer. The doctor told me that it was curable and that I was going to be alright. They told me a few weeks ago that the tumour has gone and I just hope that it stays that way, So, if you are taken ill and you are entitled to health care here. I can highly recommend that you should stay here and get better here and not go!

Fear of Sharks and the ‘New Norman’ SUZANNE MANNERS MY local public swimming pool has reopened to much rejoicing from the flabby flat dwelling hoards, myself included.

Even better is the new online appointment system which in one foul swoop eradicates the pre-swim stress of whether or not the lanes will be chock full. The system is very civilised, the swimmer chooses a date and time from the list. Your temperature is taken and off one plunges into the fresh chlorinated water of the 50-metre outdoor pool.

Utter bliss!

Swimming allows me to free my mind and to work through anxieties or problems in much the same way as a good long walk along the beach… except for one very clear difference... fear of sharks!

As my thoughts eddy and flow, the lizard part of my brain sits up like an over caffeinated Meerkat and starts to search out dangers. I have a fear of deep water. I don't like not knowing what lurks beneath me. Now you might

think that a public pool would allay those fears. The rational part of my brain understands that there is no possible entry route for the much maligned prehistoric fish and that the likelihood of being attacked by one whilst floating on the

water’s surface watching the bored soccaristas watching the swimmers is non-existent.

However this does not prevent a momentary and vivid flash of the first scene of jaws hurling itself into my mind and having a good kick around. I remind myself that the dark shape beneath me is the change in tiles (although last week it was an old man wearing flippers and a mask!).

Human beings are deftly fooled by their imaginations and mine is probably weirder than most and deeply affected by my late mother’s love of slasher movies when I was a child. I see dead people... and serial killers... and dodgy clowns and monsters and when wet, great hulking sharks with lots of teeth.

This weird imagination of mine likes to sit on my shoulder and whisper sweet nothings into my ear at most inappropriate moments. My eyes glaze over and I smirk knowingly. I have been told it gives me a look of intense concen-

tration and deep thinking, whereas in reality I am probably pondering the likelihood of Batman ever asking Robin to marry him.

I have an almost Pavlovian response to puns, malapropisms and misheard lyrics.

The latest of which is the constant repetition of the phrase the new normal which my mind has now twisted into the ‘new Norman.’

As a consequence I have now invented a whole new person called Norman who has just had an epiphany and changed his entire outlook on life. In my world he has quit his job teaching Geography and is now lazing on a tropical island making friendship bracelets for the tourists.

Norman is a new man and is a happy hippy. Good for Norman I think whenever I hear how this or that is the new normal.

As a sideline BTW Norman makes necklaces from shark’s teeth.

Black lives matter, but so do the lives of people of any colour. The removal of statues of historical figures involved in the slave trade, only tells one side of the story.

Black tribes, have rounded up and sold slaves from other tribes, for centuries, to Arabs, before whites became involved, so black people should take some of the blame for this deplorable exploitation of their own people.

Historical events, cannot be changed, but also cannot be erased, we should all move on in mutual respect for each other.

OUR VIEW The bigger picture DURING the Covid isolation period in Spain it was very, very rare to see homeless people on the street any longer. You would get to see the same old faces in doorways or outside supermarkets but they disappeared.

When I eventually did see one, I was walking home from work as I am classed as an essential worker, there were two known homeless men and the police passed by without giving them a second glance.

These men were local, they had no safety masks and am pretty sure they weren’t using hand sanitiser.

What it made me think is that if there was the possibility of ridding the streets of homeless people and beggars now, during a health crisis, surely that means that the space is constantly available to shelter and provide for them.

Local sports stadiums were said to be at capacity from sheltering them and various ordinary homeless shelters. Now, most of these people survive on handouts from the public and during the pandemic, there was also no public in the streets, no holidaymakers.

How did they manage? I did fear that they would be an easy target for the virus and also that it sadly may kill a huge number of them off.

However, I am happy to say that since the virus has begun to disappear, those faces have reappeared. A friend, I suppose you could call him, Jose Luis, survived through the virus, sleeping in the streets with nobody to collect coppers from, he had not been able to get a space in the local stadium.

In talking to him recently it did bring up the point that if the government can provide them with basic food and the means to stay alive and shelter during a crisis, why can they not do this any other time when these people are suffering, ill and dying?

Is it something that will change because of this realisation? Let’s hope so.

Filled with fury and fear, mum screamed at John, the family gardener: ‘What the hell are you doing?’ At that point a marble shot out of my gullet, ricocheted off the floor and put a neat little hole in a nearby window.

‘I just saved Barry’s life,’ mumbled John as he backed out of the hallway. I’m sorry I came into the house, madam, but I heard him choking.’

I got the marble lodged in my throat back in 1952 when I was five, and most likely would have died had the young African not acted so swiftly.

THE UK will switch to Apple and Google technology for its Covid-19 test-and-trace app, its home-grown system was not working well enough on Apple’s iPhone.

The test and trace programme is reportedly key to reopening the country but has been dogged by problems. The app developed by the National Health Service (NHS) was initially expected to be rolled out nationwide in May but did not materialise.

Dido Harding, head of the test-and-trace programme, and Matthew Gould, chief executive of the health service’s technology unit NHSX said “We have agreed to share our own innovative work ... with Google and Apple, while using their solution to address some of the specific technical
