VIVA ESPAÑA WITH Covid-19 finally beginning to dissipate as residents adhere to strict protective measures the Spanish government now consider the country a safe zone. All they ask is that Spain’s residents follow their instructions for our own good and to respect the lives of the more than 27,000 people that were lost and celebrate the over 150,000 lives that were saved. At the beginning of April Spain ranked the highest in the world for coronavirus fatalities, but due to the quick and carefully planned actions of the country’s very own hero Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, we have managed to drop to sixth place with only 25 fatalities in the last seven days, at the time of going to press. Sanchez enabled us to put our trust in him as he guided us through the crisis to provide the best care for his countrymen and adopted residents. For this, we owe him a great debt and plan to show him by keeping his country alive. Therefore, Euro Weekly News is very excited to say welcome back to Spain’s many visitors. It’s been such a long time since we have seen you and we are happy with the news that the country will accept tourists from June 21. You will be happy to know that the sun is blazing right now and we have been enjoying the occasional heatwave so what better time to hit the country’s 5,000 miles of coastline and thousands of beaches? It will definitely be a great escape from the rioting

TUI chief executive Sebastian Ebel said he is optimistic about Mallorca having a good tourist season. Speaking on Monday June 15 at a news conference to present the pilot project allowing Germans to travel to the Balearics for holidays through so-called safe travel corridors, the TUI head also said he hoped this year’s season on the island would be extended. PALMA Council has decided there will be no traditional mid-summer Night of San Juan celebrations on the city’s beaches this year. The authority will be closing the beaches from 7pm on June 23 to 10am the next day. The council explained the aim is to avoid the usual gatherings of crowds on the night and the risks of spreading Covid-19. The decree affects all the beaches and coastal areas in Pal-

ma municipality. In addition, the city administration and the Palma Federation of Residents’ Associations have agreed to suspend the San Juan festivities staged for more than three decades in the Parc de la Mar. The city authority said it would be difficult to ensure compliance with the limits on maximum people, numbers on beaches according to space, social distancing and the obligatory use of face masks.

A €9 MILLION social, economic and environmental recovery plan for Calvia is set to go ahead. The plan for addressing the impact of the Covid19 pandemic crisis was signed on Monday following what the council said had been “weeks of work” by the governing team with all the political groups with municipal representation, trade, hotel, hospitality and leisure industry associations and the main trade unions. The council said the plan includes social protection measures aimed at meeting the most basic and urgent needs of Calvia residents, measures for reactivating and sustaining economic activity and fiscal measures. NECESSARY: Business associations said cruise ship tourism would provide “a glimmer of hope to hold on to.” MALLORCA businesses have called on cruise companies to support the island and carry on making Palma a port of call. A statement issued by the PIMECO small and medium-sized business association and the hospitality trade arm of the Balearic Island business association confederation as members of the archipelago’s Chamber of Commerce, said that cruise liners continuing with their scheduled stops in Mallorca as much as they can would be a “lifeline” for the island’s economic recovery after the Covid-19 health crisis. They point out the pandemic situation means that activity has been at a halt for many businesses for months and that the financial consequences are going to last

longer, “with all that means for employment and the viability of many small and medium-sized companies. “Cruise tourism is not only welcome, it’s necessary,” the statement goes on, while underlining the need for maximum safety guarantees and the adoption of health measures. The statement ends, “for the Mallorca business collective, and especially for the business structure which provides a service to and which has as clients cruise ship passengers, that cruise companies continue backing Mallorca and their programmed stops would be a glimmer of hope to hold on to, and then we can face the entry of the ‘new normality’ with a certain optimism.”

Countries allowing free entry with 14-day quarantine Austria, Bulgaria, Estonia, France, Greece, Ireland (unless entering from Northern Ireland), Latvia, Romania, Slovenia. Countries currently not allowing entry for UK citizens Croatia (unless there is a valid reason to travel), Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Lithuania, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Slovakia (unless holding a negative Covid-19 test less than 96 hours old).

Financial help INCA Council is allocating €327,000 for financial help to self-employed hard-hit by the Covid-19 crisis. That is the sum which will be available to the local authority after signing up for the Balearic Island government round of extraordinary assistance for people who work for themselves. The aim of the subsidies is to help the self-employed get back on their feet and working again, easing the blow dealt by the coronavirus pandemic. Inca mayor Virgilio Moreno maintained his administration “has been at the side of our self-employed and business people since day one. “We have done everything within our reach to not leave anyone behind and to contribute to the maintenance of our town’s economic activity and all jobs,” he said, adding that if necessary there could be

further assistance available in September. The assistance is available for both self-employed working yearround and seasonal

self-employed who have been unable to work this year. The amounts depend on whether the self-employed person employs others.

Just in case THE Balearic Island government has set up nine aparthotels in Mallorca and two in Ibiza for tourists who are Covid19 asymptomatic just in case, regional president Francina Armengol has revealed. A pilot tourist scheme got underway in the archipelago on Monday June 15. The plan was for up to 10,900 Germans to visit the islands up until the end of June without having to go into a 14day quarantine following the establishment of a so-called ‘safe travel corridor’ between Germany and the Balearics, although Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced on Sunday June 14 that Spain will bring forward the reopening of its borders with Schengen zone countries, with the exception of Portugal, from July 1 to June 22. Speaking to press on Sunday after the weekly videoconference with the prime minister and the heads of all Spain’s regional governments, Armengol said the administration is also working on having a hotel in Menorca for asymptomatic visitors. She confirmed that the Balearic administration will cover the costs.

she owed. She reportedly told the Guardia Civil that the driver had turned up to collect her in a private car rather than a work vehicle. Then instead of taking her where she wanted to go he’d headed for a rural property off the beaten track. The woman alleged he wouldn’t let her out the car, and had tied her hands and put a gag over her mouth to stop her screaming. Her version of events was that she managed to get away when he left her alone to go and

speak to people inside the property. She went into all sorts of detail about her escape and how she tried to avoid him finding her, which included jumping on a bike she found in the lane and pedalling like fury. But the Guardia’s investigations led to the conclusion her story was riddled with contradictions and she was not telling the truth. Press reported she owned up to the lie and admitted it has been a ploy to avoid paying the driver a €90 debt.

THE Balearic Islands have moved another step forward towards the so-called new normality with the reopening of public children’s playgrounds on Saturday. Under the regional government order published in the BOIB Balearic Island Official Bulletin, local councils in Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera can open up children’s play facilities for the first time since the start of the health crisis, but subject to safety requirements. The playgrounds have to be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected twice a day, especially surfaces where there is the most contact. One of the cleans must be at the end of day or very first thing in the morning, and the other ideally at midday. The local authorities must also put up informative signs featuring the main measures for preventing the transmission of Covid-19, with particular emphasis on hand-washing, respiratory hygiene and social distancing.

Teenager in trouble A TEENAGER accused of hurting his ex-girlfriend and refusing to let her out of his home in Palma in is in trouble with the law. Police arrested the 16year-old on charges of abuse within the family sphere following an incident at the Palma property. According to reports police went to the property after a call-in about youngsters clambering up the outside. They told the officers they’d had a text message from their friend claiming her exboyfriend wouldn’t let her out and showing an injury allegedly caused by him. The police found the girl, also 16, on the second floor landing in quite a state. She claimed she’d gone round to pick up some tickets for a concert, but that she and the ex-boyfriend had got into an argument which ended up with him stopping her from leaving and getting aggressive towards her.

Airline connections AIR NOSTRUM will be offering direct flights between Mallorca and the Costa Almeria this summer. The plan is to operate a weekly service between Almeria’s El Alquian airport and Son Sant Joan in Palma every Saturday between July 17 and September 13. There are also flights programmed connecting Mallorca to Nice on the French Riviera. The airline announced there will be flights between the French city and the island on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from July 17 to September 13.

A BRUTAL attack to snatch the company takings from an employee in a Palma industrial estate has led to three arrests. Police reported the woman had been on her way to a bank to pay in the money first thing in the morning on Wednesday, June 3 when she was set upon by three men. They aimed pepper spray in the victim’s face and went to grab her handbag. She fell to the ground, unable to see her aggressor. She reportedly put up quite a resistance, but the attackers sprayed her again, got the bag and took off. Police investigators recovered gloves and a can of spray from the scene of the attack. They also located a

Finally caught up A FATHER wanted by German justice for allegedly abducting his own son four years ago is under arrest in Mallorca. Spanish press reported Guardia Civil tracked down and detained the dad after the German authorities asked the force for their collaboration based on the belief he was living in Porto Colom in Felanitx. There was a European arrest warrant in place for the father for parental abduction. The Guardia Civil also reportedly located the child in the home where the man lived with his current partner. The son was subsequently placed in temporary care until the authorities in Germany sort out him being returned to his mother. The father was being held in prison pending extradition.

NEXT week’s Night of San Juan celebrations and bonfires on beaches have been cancelled to avoid large gatherings and the associated risks stemming from the Covid-19 pandemic. Palma, Calvia, Llucmajor, Alcudia, Manacor, Andratx and Felanitx are all planning to close their municipal beaches to the public on the night of June 23 to make sure no San Juan festivities go ahead. But fashionable resort Deia has come up with a different idea. The local council is going to stage celebrations, but anyone who wants to go along has to pre-book. Posting on social media, the municipal administration explained that this year’s events have been adapted to safety rules and measures designed to prevent coronavirus infection. This means the maximum number allowed on the beach is 150, and hence the requirement to get a free ticket up front from the town hall.

DAMAGE: The fire affected a block of apartments and vehicles parked nearby. THE Balearic Provincial Court has ordered jail time for two men for torching rubbish skips in Palma in April last year, causing a fire which damaged nearby vehicles and the façade of an apartment block. Some 80 people had to be evacuated from the block in Calle Poeta Guillern Coll as the flames reached up to the third floor of the building. The court issued a fiveyear sentence for one of the men, and three and half years behind bars for the other. The property on the first

floor of the residential block was particularly affected. The fire damaged bikes, furniture and cables, and the door from the balcony to the sitting room. As well as jail time the pair have to pay €4,700 compensation to the company responsible for the city’s rubbish collection service, €44,370 compensation to the building community of owners for the damage caused, €10,600 to the family living on the first floor, plus pay for damage to affected cars and mopeds.

Caught red-handed MALLORCA police caught two thieves red-handed breaking into parked cars in Palma in the same week. In the early hours of Friday morning a patrol in the Pere Garau neighbourhood of the city spotted an individual trying to force open vehicle doors. He set off the car alarm and fled, but the patrol caught up with and detained the 20-year-old for attempted robbery. Just days earlier, again in the early hours, another patrol came across a chap on a bike trying to force open car locks. The 31-year-old pedalled off when he saw the cops, leading to a chase. He dumped the bike and tried to make a run for it, but the officers intercepted him. The police reported there has been an increase in the number of vehicle break-ins in several districts in Palma. They said they had solved more than 20 cases and made seven arrests in the last fortnight.

Hotels reopening IN a further sign that the Balearic Island tourism sector is gearing up for the summer season, Be Live Hotels has announced it is reopening establishments in Mallorca. The chain, a division of the Globalia Spanish tourism group, said on Monday it will be welcoming guests from July onwards at two hotels on the Balearic Island, as well as in the Canaries, Portugal and the Dominican Republic. The company stressed that it has implemented reinforced safety measures to protect the health of its guests, staff and collaborators. ‘Let’s end Bullfighting’ LEWIS HAMILTON’S damning criticism of bullfighting was a red rag to one of the pin-ups of Spain’s bullrings. Cayetano Rivera has hit back at the six-time Formula One champion for his online comments on the Spanish tradition. “Spain, this is truly disgusting," Hamilton posted on Instagram alongside an image put out by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) association of a bull killed in the ring with the message ‘Don’t’ let torture masquerade as culture.’ "Children in Spain learn to torture and kill bulls at the age of 14,” he told his 17 million Instagram followers. “We ask the Ministry of Education to close bullfighting schools immediately, you can help by sharing this request." Mother’s love LOCAL POLICE officers in Sevilla have arrested a reckless driver who was endangering lives as she attempted to drive whilst being under the influence. The combination of alcohol and conflict caused the event to turn violent as she tried to attack her mother and the policemen. This careless 30year-old woman was reported to the police by her own mother who called to say she was about to drive under the influence. The daughter who was clearly drunk and had admitted to consuming cannabis as well had already begun driving her car when the police arrived to stop her. The officer informed the woman that she must carry out a breathalyser test, which she quickly refused. The incident soon took a more violent turn as the driver tried to attack her own mother. The officers stepped in to avoid this happening; however, the drunken woman punched an officer in the throat. Therefore, she was immediately arrested. She was charged with crimes against road safety as well as driving under the influence.

Boosting car sales THE government has announced that it plans to scrap old vehicles of more than 10 years old, in a bid to boost car sales and a depressed automotive sector. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez also announced subsidies of between €400 and €4,000 towards the purchase of a new car, depending on pollution emissions. In short, the more environmentally friendly it is, the greater the subsidy. According to Sánchez, “the most urgent action is to revive car sales that will reactivate the factories.” Individual or self-employed people buying a vehicle can expect to receive a subsidy of between €400 and €800, depending on how efficient the model is. Despite opposition, those buying a

Subsidies, however, will exclude the purchase of any vehicle that exceeds 120 grams of CO2 emissions, so most SUVs could be left out. Subsidies also only apply to vehicles costing up to €35,000, or €45,000 for people with reduced mobility or cars without emissions.

A huge welcome ONLINE shopping giant Amazon has announced plans to open a new logistics centre just outside Madrid. The centre will create

more than 500 permanent jobs over the next three years. It is the second logistics warehouse Amazon has developed in Spain, the first being

in Dos Her manas in Sevilla. Amazon is one of the world’s largest employers, with hundreds of thousands of workers scattered around the globe. The Spanish economy has been hit particularly hard by the pandemic and so the announcement from Amazon is very welcome at the current time. The 500 new staff members will join 7,000 others in Spain, also working for Amazon on permanent contracts.

The UK press also favours its Royal family whereas in Spain this is not the case. Alfonso XIII abdicated in 1931 when the republican parties won local elections, which were considered to be a plebiscite on the monarchy. Spain has had two republics which were short-

lived, nevertheless, many voices, especially from the left-wing, will take this opportunity to vindicate a new republic. Podemos leader and Spain’s vice president, Pablo Iglesias, has on many occasions stated his clear vision of the republic and leaders from regional communities such as the Basque Country and Catalonia are more than happy to back the proposal.

White King THE very first White Lion to have been born in a Spanish zoo is being looked after by staff as he was rejected by his mother.

The lion, which has been named White King by Sevilla zoo keepers, was born on May 31 but was abandoned by its mother after a traumatic birth. White King was born at the Guillena World Park Reserve. Three days later staff were forced to pull him out of the enclosure after being repeatedly snubbed by his mother and suffering with dehydration, hypothermia and hypoglycaemia. Zoo director Juan Luis Malpartida said the lioness, who was brought over from Thailand four years ago, was in labour for two weeks before White King was finally born. Mr Malpartida said the bundle of white fur was being bottle fed and doing well, and getting no end of cuddles from staff.

FOR many years a significant number of expatriates living in Spain have chosen not to take out residency and have driven cars with foreign number plates, relatively content that they were unlikely to have problems with the authorities. British passport holders who fit into this category need to understand that Brexit has changed everything and now whilst it was possible for members of European Union states to drive a foreign plated car for 180 days out of 365 in Spain, this will no longer be the case when the UK finally exits the EU. Where a vehicle has a manufacturers Certificate of Conformity, the ficha reducida is not required. it will then need an ITV (MOT) test undertaken. Following this, the two taxes are paid, and the car can be registered at Trafico. The pharma firm signed a deal which will see up to 400 million doses of the vaccine being made available to EU member countries. The vaccine, which is being developed by the University of Oxford, will be manufactured by AstraZeneca, who are al-

ready looking at ways of scaling-up the operation. The vaccine is to be supplied on a not-for-profit basis during the pandemic and deliveries will start by the end of the year. The deal is the first for Europe’s Inclusive Vaccines Alliances (IVA), which was formed by France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands to secure vaccine doses for members of the EU. “This will ensure that hundreds of millions of people

‘Andalucia respira’ A MALAGA made ventilator has received a €25,000 donation from Endesa, to help the firm export ventilators to other nations struck by the virus. Together with Enel Group, the electricity and gas company is also offering international management expertise to help export the product. The ventilator was created thanks to the collaboration between professionals and researchers from the Ministry of Health and Families, the Malaga’s Institute of Biomedical Research, UMA and the Progress and Health Foundation. It is now being successfully manufactured by Fujitsu in Malaga. The first 300 units have already been despatched to the Andalucian Health Service, while the rest are being sold across Spain. In addition, there are several countries, particularly in Latin America, such as Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico and Ecuador that have expressed interest in buying the ventilators Endesa wants to help ‘Andalucía Respira’ reach these countries affected by the coronavirus, which is why it has made the donation and offering its expertise to the firm. My flight back to the UK has been cancelled four times now so I have stayed much longer than planned, and if I return in the autumn (flights booked long ago) I could now exceed 183 days for the year. Think for‐ ward, not backward. The YOU AND THE LAW State of Alarm is IN SPAIN now scheduled to end June 21. From that day you have the right to a tourist stay of 90 days during the following 183 days. These days need not be continuous. If you get a flight June 27, say, using up six of your days, you can return in the autumn with 84 days remaining to you. At the end of that time you must leave Spain and you may not return for at least the following 90 days.

Bank looks to the future AS profits start to falter at Spanish bank Santander, it has announced that it will be look‐ ing to strengthen its technolo‐ gy division by hiring staff di‐ rectly. Currently a very high per‐ centage of the work undertak‐ en is outsourced and it is now looking to recruit 3,000 quali‐ fied staff of which 1,000 will work for the bank in Spain. A further 1,000 will be ap‐ pointed in Brazil with the bal‐ ance being shared throughout the Group’s overseas opera‐ tions as Santander looks to up‐ date its online business.

Figures just released by the Bank of Spain show a significant increase to €1.224 trillion (98.9 per cent of Gross Do‐ mestic Product) for the first quarter of

2020. This was 3.5 per cent higher than the last quarter of 2019 and rose even before the lockdown and State of Alarm had in‐ fluenced the results. Second quarter figures will almost cer‐ tainly take the debt above 100 per cent of GDP.

The UK is not the USA

AS you can probably imagine, this week I truly had no idea where to start. Events taking place this past week or so have left me disgusted, saddened, angry and in utter despair. To me, one thing that has been made perfectly clear is that these BLM demonstrations and riots have managed to create more racial divisions in society than any other movement in living memory. People who previously never had a racist bone in their bodies have been virtually thrown into a mix which is dividing neighbours, breaking down friendships and even causing rifts in families. Racism is now rife. So well done all the marchers protesting against… Yep you’ve guessed it… Racism! To be frank, apart from the horrendous and utterly unacceptable way George Floyd was murdered, it seems pretty obvious to me that to present a vicious, armed robbing thug, who was a career criminal high on drugs, as an example of black culture, is hardly the brightest way to gain sympathy or support for a cause, however well intentioned. And do you know something? Despite all the protesting and postulating, I’m still not entirely clear what they actually want? The UK is not the USA.

DEMONSTRATIONS: Have created more racial divisions in society than ever before. In Britain it appears to me that if you are ethnic or black you often seem to have even more opportunities than the white population. Many are chosen for positions specifically because they have these backgrounds! Police recruitment schemes, the BBC and a whole spate of recent TV commercials immediately spring to mind.

You certainly don’t see advertisements asking people to apply for positions purely because they are white, the outcry would be humungous! As far as stop and search is concerned, the problem there is that the percentage of criminality, particularly among young black men, is so high it stands to reason they are going to be tar-

geted. I can’t think of a more waste of police time than patting down old white ladies for weapons or drugs. As for the opposition to a number of statues, these memorials are not exhibited to glorify slavery; they are erected to commemorate the achievements and efforts of historical figures. Ironically many of these ‘plinth occupiers’ are actually responsible for the democratic and liberal society that enables these protests to be allowed in the first place. No this is another blatant attempt to erode and air brush the British heritage and culture out of existence. What they hope to replace it with I can’t imagine! Whatever it turns out to be, you can rest assured it will include no encouragement of free speech, or enjoy the unbiased democratic way of life our ancestors fought and died for. I actually think there is a New World Order approaching, (‘like a thief in the night’!) the instigators of which must be rubbing their hands at the chaos being caused by all this unrest. Get the Onesies out, Orwellian doctrine is on the horizon, and the luvvies, lefties and ‘wokers’ have only themselves to blame. Keep the faith Love Leapy leapylee2002@gmail.com

DEAR Euro Weekly, Thank god we are going into Phase 3 but I do wonder why are some bars and restaurants holding off opening until July? I thought they would be desperate to open and get bums on seats and start to recover some money. However, it just goes to show that perseverance can sometimes lead to the discovery of an unturned stone. Last week German authorities identified 43-year-old Christian Brueckner, a German sex offender, as the prime suspect in the little girl’s disappearance. Brueckner, currently in prison in Germany for a drug offence is also appealing a previous conviction for the rape of a 72-year-old American woman in Praia da Luz, where Madeleine was abducted Now German police are also looking into if he was involved in the case of a six-year-old German boy, René Hasee, who disappeared in the Algarve in 1996 and fiveyear-old, Inga Gehricke, who disappeared in 2015 near his property in Stendhal, Germany. The authorities are slowly uncovering a list of sexual assaults, child pornography and countless other crimes. How did it take so long to find this man with so many breadcrumbs left behind leading directly to him? He was known in Praia da Luz, he was known to shower children with attention and gifts, friends and ex-girlfriends are now saying they helped him disappear, or heard him hint that he had done something, one even took ownership of his car. Why has it finally taken so long to put this puzzle together? There definitely seems to be more people to blame for hiding this high profile story and luckily for the heartbroken McCann parents it should clear them of any doubt.

A serious ramble I’m not sure why the right wing Imperialists are getting hung up on statues and street names - If someone put a statue of Jimmy Saville up on our street to commemorate his good works for children’s charity I wouldn’t complain if someone came along now and took it down. They’re red herrings though, who has learnt history from statues or street names, very few I suspect, yet more people will have learnt the terrible history of Colston and the slave trade from the taking down of his statue than ever learned anything about it at school - I looked at the history syllabus for this year and it’s no different than I was taught in the 60’s - basically glorification of the British Empire and all the good work Britain did which is fine, but no mention of all of the really terrible things Britain did during Colonisation / so personally I don’t condone vandalism and I confess it’s getting a bit silly on both sides with right wing extremists due to protest and look for trouble around monuments this weekend, but I care less about statues and street names other than I hope what is being done short term, whether people believe it’s right or wrong might lead to some change in education and the longer term knowledge of future generations - we shouldn’t continue to whitewash history in our education, literature and learning.

It should be short and to the point MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I AM pleased to say we are now in Phase 3 of the lockdown de-escalation and things are getting back to a bit of normality. I’ve spent I don’t know how many weeks being nagged by the wife, the kids and my friends which is quite acceptable. But now I’ve had enough because my phone now wants to get involved. Siri starts the day asking if I want to know the local weather. I’ve never asked her for that information. My health App tells me that I’m not doing as many steps as I did last week. Oh really? What’s it got to do with you? I ask my Prime music to play me a song and it then tells me that the version I subscribe to doesn’t have that song. OK fair enough but then it gives me the rub down by telling me the other, more expensive, version has 50 million songs I can choose from. It then proceeds to play me a song

that it thinks I will like. The truth is I don’t like it. I want the song I asked for and because I’m paranoid I think they do it just to wind me up. My food App tells me I’ve nearly hit my calorie count for the day and I haven’t even finished my breakfast yet! I will have to search and find out how to switch these things off. The problem is you have to opt out of so many things instead of opting in. So of course with nowhere to go I’ve been watching a lot more TV than usual. Friends have been recommending series to watch. I do love a bit of TV but mostly I like movies. I can’t be arsed to watch a TV series that goes on for 12 weeks because if I’ve got two or three going at the same time I just forget what’s going on. So I wait ‘til they finish then binge watch them which is much better. But what’s happening now is they don’t know when to finish. Some just do one series too many. Killing Eve for instance should have quit at series 2. My biggest gripe though is that some of these six or eight episoders are just being dragged out and should just be a two-hour movie and done with. Like my articles short and to the point.

If you don’t enjoy going to the gym or taking exercise classes, try activities that involve being active, like dancing. Many kinds of treatments can ease symptoms - medications, therapy, and living a healthy lifestyle. Exercise alone won’t manage all of your symptoms, but it can make them easier to manage and reduce your risk of other health complications. If something hurts or makes your symptoms more severe, stop those activities and talk to your doctor or professional. Different types of exercise work for different people. Keep trying new ways to stay active, have fun, and find what works for you. I for exa m p l e struggle with fast weight rep work outs as its pumps me up too much, the adrenaline is just too much for me!! But in these last weeks I have noticed a change in my moods throughout the day, less irritable, I actually have a sleeping pattern (it was non existent before!), my anxiety is less pronounced too. THE Madeleine McCann suspect reportedly linked to the disappearance of other young children h a s r e i g n i t e d i n t e rest in the whole sad story. The same suspect who was ‘discarded’ in 2007 in t h e o r i g i n a l P o rtuguese investigat i o n . H o w e v e r, t h a t investigation failed to consider mobile phone data among a litany of errors. Kate and Gerry McCann have waited 13 years while Madeleine’s disappearance has spawned conspiracy theories, and panic among other parents. And though a new suspect has undeniably reignited interest in their daughter’s case, the British media were hooked from the moment she went missing. Let’s hope this is the end of their ordeal. Everyone has an opinion about the McCanns. Leaving their

children alone was undoubtedly an error of judgement, but they’ve paid the highest price for it. But then, should parents leave their kids in a car when they nip to the shops, or in a pram outside them? But it’s not just about what they did, it’s what the abductor did. And it’s not unusual that a prime suspect tur ns up early in a police investigation and is virtually ignored or ‘discarded.’ This has happened in several c a s e s : t h e Yo r k s h i r e Ripper, Milly Dowler (in Surrey), Rachel Nickell (in Wimbledon) and others. One distinguishing factor in these particular cases is that the eventual offender’s related crimes have included crossing borders into different police regions and, occasionally, different countries. Naturally, there are other criteria that have to be considered such as the expertise of the investigators, their impartiality, their proficiency or motivation (or even lack of finan-

cial resources) that permit them to, or prevent them from, pursuing every line of enquiry to an effective and appropriate conclusion. Factored into this, pressures from senior officers (as in the Jeremy Bamber case), politicians, public opinion and financial cuts can all have implications for the success or failure of an investigation. Hopefully, after all these years of anguish for the McCann family, Madeleine’s abductor is finally identified. It may bring closure of sorts, but the healing of wounds ... never. AS the most simple pleasures of life slowly return, they suddenly feel more fantastic than before. I walked through Marbella on Monday, filled with mixed emotions. On one hand, it’s great to see people reuniting over coffee, or ice cream. Wide smiles and excited chat. Simple daily life, that we now treasure. On the other, to see the large number of businesses that have been forced to close, was shocking. While the world has entered recession, to see it on such a scale, in a town like Marbella, was an eye opener. A week ago, I stopped by a small restaurant, in the centre of town. The owner, a charming lady, explained how she was trying to get customers to return. Trying everything - cutting prices, setting up a home delivery service and such. I could see the panic in her eyes. She explained that people are simply not going out to eat, as people are nervous. I applauded her strength and determination. I assured her I would return soon with friends. Sadly, when I returned just days later, her business was gone. Life is very mixed right now. Again, a story of two sides. On one, we need tourism to restart, but at the same time, we the residents, are extremely lucky to have Marbella so tranquil, as it heads towards mid-June. Most days I hang out at the beach. It’s a dawn till dusk addiction, and one I am reluctant to give up. Long days spent swimming, lunching and snoozing on an almost empty beach. Los Monteros is my HQ, and I love it. My house is on the beach, so it’s as if, all I need, is all I have. Such a fantastic area, and certainly the best beach in Marbella. Social distancing is respected, and all in all, life’s, as the saying goes, a beach. On Wednesday I was craving pizza. Actually, if I’m honest, I crave pizza most days. At a small local restaurant,

ITALY: Where my heart belongs. Picassa Pizza in El Rosario, I found the best pizza I’ve eaten in years. Chef Ángel is the man you need to know, if you want great pizza. I don’t know how it happened, but I arrived home with two. Well you know, cold pizza for breakfast is always a treat. As if the pizza was leading me back to Italy, I took a call from my friend Edo in Rome, inviting me to a party next month. But how could I get there? Would the airport be open? I knew that I had to get there, no matter what. Those who know me, know my heart belongs in Italy, especially Rome. A city where I’ve lived for many years. A city that fills me with so much happiness, it almost feels like a Fellini movie. After months of lockdown, just like that, it seems I’ll be at home, in Rome again, soon. My heart pumps at the thought. To reboot local economy, doesn’t have to be dinner at a Michelin restaurant. A simple espresso at a bar is a good place to start. An amazing, inexpensive pizza (or two) is also a good plan. I’m a firm believer in tipping. As we emerge from lockdown, into an uncertain world, these days I find myself over tipping, everywhere I go. Perhaps the universe will return the favour somehow. We live in hope!

The brief ceremonial event traditionally held before formal birthday celebrations start, took place at 11am on June 13 at Windsor Castle. Although Trooping the Colour usually takes place at Buckingham Palace, the scaled-back version had to be moved to Windsor Castle, where the Queen is in isolation with Prince Philip. The small ceremonial event was designed in just two weeks to allow for social distancing among soldiers. The traditional Trooping the Colour event had already been cancelled

due to Covid-19 restrictions. Trooping the Colour ordinarily sees thousands flock to Buckingham Palace, lining the Mall to see the pageantry of the ceremony. However, this year the event meant that guardsmen had to maintain social distancing while standing in ceremonial formation. Although a much quieter birthday than the Queen is used to, there was still sufficient ‘pomp and circumstance’ to make it a memorable day. The Royal Family are spending the rest of the day in quiet celebration of Her Majesty’s 94th birthday, with many members joining the party ‘remotely.’
