Phase 1 allows us to go and visit friends and family in their homes, to give them a hug and tell them how much they mean to us in person after months of video calls.

You can now take a long walk on the beach or in the countryside and take in the beauty of your surroundings after months of being pent up inside.

Phase 1 vs Phase 2 MOST of Spain is currently in Phase 1 of the de-escalation plan, however, some areas such as La Gomera or El Hierro are currently in Phase 2.

Seeing as regulations are constantly changing under new decrees, it is important to know the difference on what you are allowed to do within your phase and what you cannot do.

Neither in Phase 1 or Phase 2 can you leave the province, mobility between provinces is still prohibited and is expected to recommence at a later date.

In Phase 1 family and friends can hold reunions at homes, within the same province, of up to 10 people.

These meetings should not include any vulnerable risk groups. Funerals and wakes will also be allowed for a limited number of people, 15 if its open-air and 10 if it’s in a

Also, in Phase 1 is the reopening of bars and restaurants’ terraces which is capped at 50 per cent.

Phase 2 will be quite similar to Phase 1, the main difference being that it will accommodate for more people by increasing maximum

capacities. Places of worship and shops will amplify their capacity from 30 per cent to 50 per cent.

Restaurants and bars with over 70sqm will begin serving clients inside at 30 per cent capacity and with table service only. Shopping centres will also re-open but at 40 per cent capacity but with no

common spaces. Theatres and cinemas will also reopen at 30 per cent capacity.

The newest regulation to be announced under this phase is the reopening of swimming pools and beaches, which will also be controlled. Pools will be capped at 30 per cent capacity and beaches will have to ensure a two-metre distance between individuals. The maximum number of people allowed at the beach as a group is 15, unless these all live together.

It is important to note that with these added freedoms comes an added sense of responsibility which we as citizens of a community must uphold. If sanitary conditions worsen or populations act irresponsibly then there is a possibility of being either held back in the same phase or even demoted to the previous phase.

Malaga hopes to reopen the famous route on June 12 and tickets will be on sale from May 22. Initially only weekend visits will be allowed, and a maximum of 550 tickets will be sold per day to avoid overcrowding.

Francisco Salado, the President of Costa del Sol Tourism, confirmed that they adopted “health and safety measures to protect both staff and visitors. Initially we will only open on the weekends, and we will see how things progress before we amplify the timetable.”

MIRAMAR shopping centre in Fuengirola has incorporated NASA technology within its security installations in order to guarantee maximum protection and a safe reopening for both its customers and staff.

ALLOWED OUT: Residents try to grasp some kind of a normal life.

IT was the moment we had all been waiting for, that first taste of freedom that the majority of us had been unable to have for two months. The enforced confinement had pushed us into facing unprecedented challenges, luckily from the safety of our own homes.

This Monday we were finally allowed to visit family we had missed dearly, go for a coffee or a beer, catch up with friends, go to the shops and a number of other things we had previously taken for granted.

As residents and businesses try to grasp some kind of

a normal life, Euro Weekly News spoke to members of the public on the Costa del Sol to see how they were enjoying the first few days of Phase 1.

ELLIOTT WRIGHT, owner of the popular Olivia’s in La Cala de Mijas told Euro Weekly News “It has been hard work preparing for Phase 1 but we have rearranged the terrace and can now seat 80 people observing social distancing.

“We reopened on Monday and were very pleased with the number of customers who came and as an added attraction we now have a DJ playing on the terrace which has been well received.

“Whilst we would prefer advance bookings, it is possible to tur n up and if we have room guests will be more than welcome,” he added.

MARIE lives in Benalmadena, “I was obviously excited to get out of the house to see my family, which was wonderful. However, I am a bit alar med by the number of people that are on the streets and not wearing face masks or staying apart from each other. It would be heartbreaking to come so far only for a second wave of the virus to come.”

Face masks Obligatory SPAIN’S gover nment has announced that the use of face masks will now be obligatory in public spaces across the country to prevent Covid-19 contagion.

It is obligatory to wear face masks on all public transport, confined public spaces, as well as in the streets if the mini-

mum social distance of two metres can’t be maintained.

Health Minister Salvador Illa confirmed the new legislation on May 18 as it was an issue that all regional governments had agreed on. Illa stated that “masks must be worn on all public transport, including buses,

trains, taxis, as well as closed public spaces, and outdoors where adequate social distancing cannot be maintained.”

It’s also a recommendation from the World Health Organisation (WHO) to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

However, WHO has acknowledged, along with

other health organisations, that face masks can be problematic for some people, for example, those who suffer from anxiety or respiratory conditions. The other concern people have is the potential environmental pollution if face masks are not discarded properly.

RIGHTLY impressed with the work that the staff of the Accident and Emergency Unit at the Costa del Sol Hospital in Marbella undertake on a daily basis, the La Cala de Mijas Lions arranged for delivery of lunch to them on two recent occasions.

An exceptional array of food was supplied and delivered by Craig from the Costa Deli Sol in Cala de Mijas.

Accompanying the food was a letter from the Lions’ President, Anita Humphreys, thanking the staff at the hospital A & E department for their selfless support of the local community.

Pedestrian zones LAST week Benalmadena Mayor’s Office announced the reorganisation of mobility in the municipality to give greater prominence to the pedestrian, by following the guidelines marked as preventive measures for social distancing.

Among the measures agreed is the partial closure of two main roads of the municipality to road traffic: Avenida de Antonio Machado in Benalmadena Costa, and the Avenida de la Constitución in Arroyo de la Miel. “In the case of Avenida de Antonio Machado, the two lanes in the direction of Torremolinos will be closed to road traffic, in the section between the Los Molinillos roundabout and the Sunset Beach hotel; leaving the passage of vehicles reduced to the two lanes in the direction of Fuengirola,” explained the councillor for Mobility and Traffic Javier Marín.

Pair arrested

TWO men have been arrested in Marbella charged with attacking a third man and fracturing his nose. According to police reports the injured man had rented a car from the duo and had failed to return it when due.

No more blue zone free parking WHEN the State of Alarm was declared in Spain, the Marbella Council announced that it would allow drivers to leave their cars parked in blue zones without restriction on the duration and without having to pay for the parking.

Now that the city is moving into Phase 1, spokesman Félix Romero announced in a television interview that the charges at blue zones would be reintroduced.

The council believes that in order to as-

sist local business it is important that there is movement of vehicles particularly in different commercial areas around the municipality.

In the meantime, Ciudadanos councillor, María García has asked that the council consider extending residents parking permits which had been paid for in advance so that they do not lose out financially due to the nearly two months when parking was free.

WHEN work started on the building of a new health centre in San Pedro Alcantara it was decided to temporarily move the office and vehicles of the 061 Emergency Health Service to the fire station in the San Pedro industrial estate.

Then when worked was stopped at the health centre, it was an-

nounced that the Junta de Andalucia had decided to move the facility to Estepona to the surprise and distress of local residents.

A petition was quickly organised which immediately gained several hundred signatures as local people believed that they would be more at risk in a medical emergency if the

paramedics had to travel from Estepona.

Now, Councillor Javier García has announced that the San Pedro residents will have their wish and a plot of land will be made available in the Trapiche del Guadaiza area of the town and the new building should be ready by autumn of this year.

Age Care Association THANKS to a generous benefactor, Age Care is able to continue its work with Collective Calling, supplying 35 freshly cooked hot meals to the homeless and destitute families each week.

Age Care is continuing to help its members with their shopping and medical needs, confirming appointments and supplying volunteer drivers to take them.

Uplifting actions AGE CONCERN Marbella and San Pedro’s new newsletter provides some uplifting information from their community.

Ella Aust, aged 10, who attends Sotogrande International School, set up the project to raise money for struggling pensioners and poor local families on the coast.

Ella decided to set up a GoFundMe page, with all the proceeds going to Age Concern Manilva and the Duquesa Charitable Society of St George’s food bank. She has managed to raise over €1,100.

There is also an update from CK La Quinta Senior Residence, “I can inform you that we may now admit new residents when they have been tested for Covid-19, 48 hours in advance. If anyone who wishes to become a resident does not know how to access this test, we can assist them.

“If the results are negative they may come in, but they then have to maintain 21 days in quarantine. Visitors are not allowed yet.”

Bar Brawl Terrace Space A BRAWL in a Mijas bar resulted in a vicious stabbing and six arrests.

The violent incident took place in a bar in Torrenueva, on the very first day that bars and restaurants could open their terraces on May 18 after two months of lockdown. The brawl involved around a dozen people, mostly Brits, aged between 25 and 40 years old. Of the six that were arrested, five have been released on charges, but the sixth has been transferred to Madrid as he is wanted by the UK authorities for drug related crimes. The victim is reported to be recovering in intensive care at the Costa del Sol Hospital.

A 21-YEAR-OLD Swedish national was chased by National Police in Fuengirola after committing serious crimes against road safety and driving recklessly through four red lights.

The young man was driving down a wellknown avenue of the municipality when he drove through a red light, he then saw the police presence and accelerated recklessly.

The incident occurred on May 18 when a patrol car observed how the vehicle drove

Officers proceeded to identify the driver and the co-pilot of the vehicle and subsequently arrest the driver as the author of crimes against road safety and grave disobedience.

The detainee was driven to the Local Police station to conduct an alcohol test which came back negative.

Painted Arrows Rescheduled

BLUE MARKINGS: To remind residents of the restrictions.

FUENGIROLA’S Town Hall has repainted street signs and painted markings on the roads to remind residents of the social distancing and restrictions that must be respected, to help avoid congestion and Covid-19 contagion.

Just this morning, the council painted two figures on all the pavements, alongside the blue arrow signs they introduced just last week, to demonstrate that a twometre distance must be maintained, while a one-way system is observed. The arrows were introduced a few days ago, to educate the locals to walk in the same direction as the arrow on the beach promenades and footpaths to ease congestion.

LATIN pop star Marc Anthony has rescheduled his Fuengirola concert originally scheduled for this summer on June 26, 2020 until next year - on June 25, 2021.

Marc Anthony was expected to play at Marenostrum Fuengirola - Costa del Sol’s top venue for concerts and festivals - this summer, which has been cancelled as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, he has promised his fans that he will be back next year.

Marenostrum Fuengirola’s entertainment season at the castle was originally expected to start this weekend, on May 16. However, many concerts have now been postponed with some now rescheduled for next year. Spanish singer Alejandro Sanz’s concert, for example, has also been rescheduled from July 4-5 of this year, to July 2-3, 2021.

Recovery from Covid-19 LUIS BLANCO, an Argentinian former footballer and now coach of Gibraltar Club Mons Calpe spent 37 days in the Costa del Sol Hospital Marbella, close to death, as he had caught the coronavirus, Covid-19.

In an interview with an Argentine TV programme, he explained that he had spent six days in a coma and 10 days in intensive care and actually dreamed that he had died.

He told the programme that he had complied with all of the social distancing recommendations, wearing masks and gloves and that none of his colleagues at the club had

Having seen other patients in the hospital die, he is very aware that it was thanks to the strength of his body and the

treatment he received that put him on the road to recovery.

Now he just wants to be allowed to fly back to Argentina and see his family again.

Cycle lane petition Finally

A BRITISH resident in Marbella, Angela Lafferty is part of a group Acción por el Clima Marbella and she came up with the idea of petitioning for better and permanent cycling lanes in the city.

The Marbella Council has already sealed off part of the Paseo Maritimo to those on bikes and has set up a temporary cycle lane to make cars, cyclists and pedestrians safer.

Excess of load A 47-YEAR-OLD from Mijas, has been arrested for smuggling after 26,000 packets of cigarettes were found in his van during a police control.

The Guardia Civil stopped the detainee in Alhaurin de la Torre after the van appeared to have ‘an excess of load.’

In a statement on May 17, they said: “Police intervened 26,000 packs of tobacco of illegal origin in the town of Alhaurin de la Torre, and the driver of the van carrying the goods has been arrested.

“When officers were carrying out a police control in the town they observed a van with an apparent excess of load, so they stopped it.”

Inside the vehicle they found numerous cardboard boxes containing 26,000 packs of tobacco of different brands, “without the driver being able to prove the legal origin of the goods.”

One of the arrests was made in the United Kingdom, which had required the collaboration of the British police; the other arrest has been in Murcia.

Both are initially accused of the crime of murder since they allegedly shot the victim when he was inside his car and without any possibility of defence.

More charges could be added to them since the way of executing the crime seemed to point to a settling of accounts.

The deceased, a 39year-old Englishman identified only as ‘PAW,’ had a history of drug trafficking and was allegedly related to a smoking club in Fuengirola which was of interest to the police for the alleged sale of hashish and marihuana.

Lufthansa restarting flights L U F T H A N S A g ro u p a i r l i n e s a re restarting flights between Ibiza, Mallorca and Valencia and six German and one Swiss city at the beginning of June.

The Lufthansa, Eurowings and Swiss flight offer to Spain will increase from 14 to 61 connections a week between June 1 and 14.

Reservations are already being taken for the services connecting the two Balearic Islands and Valencia with the two northern European countries.

Eurowings will be offering five weekly flights to Mallorca from Cologne, five from Dusseldor f, and four from Munich and two services a week between Dusseldorf and Ibiza.

part of the Lufthansa group’s general reactivation plan, under which it expects to be flying from Germany to 106 destinations in Europe and more than 20 locations elsewhere in the world at the end of June.

The group has reminded travellers to take into account rules on entry and quarantine at their respective destinations when planning their trips.

It will also continue to ask passengers to wear face masks inside the aircraft, while onboard refreshment services will be limited until further notice.

Cyberhack THE British budget airline easyJet admitted on Tuesday that hackers were able to access their database

and steal the email, travel details and credit card details of around nine million customers, in what has

been branded as a “highly sophisticated” attack.

The company is already facing serious backlash from customers who had booked flights with the airline to holiday favourite destinations which have now been cancelled due to the virus and the restrictions it has posed on the tourism industry.

Now they must also worry about their information being jeopardised in the latest breach of information.

In a statement released to the stock exchange, easyJet has argued that it “takes issues of security extremely seriously and will continue to invest to further enhance [their] security environment.”

OFFICIALS all across the world are now trying to grapple with ways to try and tax companies such as Facebook and even Google. Spain’s own government have just approved a digital services tax. This is coming after a very similar move came from the US. The levy is going to place a total tax rate of 3 per cent on earnings that come from online ads and any deals that might be brokered on digital platforms.

Temperature checks

THE Spanish government has announced that all arrivals at Spanish airports are to have their temperatures checked on arrival.

Laid off LOW cost air carrier Ryanair is sacking yet more workers in Spain and the UK following April’s announcement of thousands of redundancies.

Two hundred and fifty office staff are to go from the company’s offices in Madrid and Stansted, in addition to Dublin and Wroclaw.

The job cuts will come from a mixture of sackings, voluntary redundancies, and non-renewal of fixed-term contracts.

The fresh blow comes as Ryanair said in April that it would be laying off up to 3,000 staff.

Darren Hughes, People Director for Ryanair said: “This is a very painful time for Ryanair, our crews and our people supporting operations from our Dublin, Stansted, Madrid and Wroclaw offices.”

The carrier says that it plans to operate around 40 per cent of its regular services across all of its scheduled routes from July 1.

Sharks spotted A MORE than eightmetre long shark has appeared cruising around just 400 metres or so from a beach in Polopos on Granada’s Costa Tropical.

Saturday’s sighting of the basking shark in front of the La Mamola beach follows reports at the beginning of the month of a much smaller one, around three metres, in front of a beach in Calahonda just down the coast towards Motril.

The Guardia Civil said that while this species of shark, the second largest in the world, is not known to attack man, its Maritime Service advises the public not to get too close to the creature in boats or kayaks.

Ministry of Labour to uncover possible fraudulent redundancy schemes SPANISH ‘ERTE’ schemes, following the trend of most European countries, allow employers to lay off or suspend temporarily workers in crisis situations. This can be done fully for the duration of the shift or, alternatively, on a part-time basis. There are two types of ERTEs that can be used.

The ERTE based on economic or productivity grounds, which requires a certain degree of participation and an agreement with employees. The Government will pay salaries (with an upper limit) but not the substantial social security expenses, which are covered by the employer.

The second furlough procedure is the ERTE ‘force majeure,’ an expeditious process that if not resolved by the authorities within five days of application, with a specific resolution, will be deemed approved by application of the mechanism of ‘administrative silence,’ without having to

seek the employees’ consent. The advantage here is that the Government pays the salaries and covers the social security - we could call it full package - and its quick to implement.

But who can qualify for one or another under Covid-19? Companies hit with physical obstacles to freely trade (ie street shops, bars, restaurants, hotels, airlines etc) would typically qualify for ‘force majeure ERTE’ whereas others such as offices (law firm, marketing companies, real estate agencies etc) would not be eligible for the ‘force majeure’ ERTE as they can still trade online, albeit with major challenges due to a restricted movement of people. Still, they would qualify for the less attractive ERTE scheme.

Companies that believe they are safe once the five-day deadline has passed, or even once salaries start being paid by the SEPE (State Employment Public Service), are mistak-

en: the Government has announced they will start to review the files and anyone misusing the ERTE ‘force majeure’ fast-track redundancy tool will face severe fines (between €6k and €187k), quite apart from having to refund temporary leave wages.

Let us take the example of real estate agencies in Andalucia, where real estate businesses do not need to run from a street shop (unlike in Extremadura region for instance): have they been prevented totally from trading? Are they banned from listing properties? Or showing off plan properties even if online?

The answer is no, they can still do so even if many may not, because they lack clientele (the devil’s in the detail here) and yet, larger numbers of real estate businesses have gone for the full package ERTE. Time will tell which legal advisors made the right redundancy scheme choice.

Spain’s borders stay closed NO ENTRY: Travel ban extended.

THE country has announced it is extending a travel ban to all non-essential visitors until June 15, which matches the European Union policy to do the same.

The new government order pushes past the original cut-off date of May 24, and goes past the current period of State of Alarm emergency measures.

A government source said that “restrictions are likely to remain in place no matter how important tourism is for the Spanish economy.”

Only Spanish nationals and non-Spaniards with official residencia documents that prove Spain is where they live are allowed in via flights, sea journeys and land border crossings. There are some limited exceptions including special category workers and diplomats.

Land borders with France and Portugal were closed to most people since the State of Alarm was implemented, pushing the economy to a near stand-still and hitting its key tourist sector hard.

by DAMON MITCHELL THE Covid-19 crisis is causing a major distancing between Spanish society and its political representatives.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez had intended to push Congress for a 30-day extension of the State of Alarm to ‘cover until the end of the de-escalation.’

However, Sánchez has not received the back up he had hoped for and has had to settle for another 15 days, which is the period for which the State of Alarm has been extended since it was decreed on March 14.

Sánchez explained that, since it is a “completely different phase,” it will have modifications towards the “institutional de-escalation.”

For this, he was negotiating with the Catalonia and Basque parties for their votes of agreement, but has been

Spain’s electorate seems to have little memory of this and the political parties know this therefore they could push for general elections and once all the important positions have been negotiated just another reboot.

Not enough plastic

EVEN though there are some indus­ tries that have benefited from the Covid­19 pandemic such as suppli­ ers of plastic sheets for safety screens, even they are suffering.

According to the British Plastics Federation, some firms aren’t likely to be able to supply the necessary acrylics until the end of July and as more shops and offices open, so the demand just keeps increasing.

As organisations like Uber and mini cab firms are now trialling the addition of screens in their cars, the supply situation can only get worse.

Spanish car industry facing problems IT would appear that one of the first major losses of industrial pro­ duction in Spain will come in the vehicle production industry.

Japanese newspaper Nikkei sug­ gests that when it reveals its latest results on May 28, Nissan will an­ nounce the closure of its loss­mak­ ing factory in Barcelona and the transfer of production to France.

Last year the Spanish arm pro­ duced some 55,000 commercial ve­ hicles and small lorries but has been working to only a small per­ centage of capacity for some time.

It would be uneconomic to move some of the production from Spain to France if no French factory has the tooling available to take over the work, but with France looking to move into an all­electric vehicle scenario by 2030, any production for new models is more likely to take place in France than see new plant for Spain.

2. Yes, it can be made ‘legal’ by amending the original statutes of the community to include the prohibition of pool access.

3. No, the Property Registry will not reject the amendment.

All of the above depends on court decisions and not laws.

This is why I put ‘legal’ between quotation marks. One court has ruled that pool access can be prohibited if it is written in the statutes. And, yes, you can amend your statutes by a unanimous vote. This is highly unlikely.

Another large loan THE Spanish construction compa­ ny OHL has entered into an agree­ ment with a number of banks to borrow €140 million in order to protect its liquidity.

As is becoming more common with large loans, a condition was that it should be substantially guaranteed by the Official Credit Institute (ICO) which is an arm of Spain’s government and it has ac­ cepted a 70 per cent risk.

The loan is due to be repaid the end of October 2021 by which time the company expects busi­ ness to return to normal.

Spanish hotels must change MANUEL VEGAS, President of the Spanish Association of Hotel Directors (AEDH) predicts that as hotels try to return to normal once allowed to reopen, there will have to be some major changes in the way they operate.

Firstly, the concept of a breakfast buffet will have to disappear as it would be impossible to observe so­ cial distancing and the old­fash­ ioned continental breakfast will make a return with many travellers deciding to eat in their rooms.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT NUMBERS seem to be at the top of the priority list among the politicians and media these days. Numbers of deaths here, numbers of cases there, percentages of victims from this area, how the UK numbers compare with other countries.

The whole sorry debacle is beginning to resemble some macabre international lottery competition. As I write this, I have a half an eye on SKY news and, lo and behold, the announcer is giving out more numbers, namely the number of deaths in care homes.

Well of course these particular sums truly are shocking. We are all terribly saddened by the number of elderly patients succumbing to this awful disease.

But why are we so surprised at the high death toll among the most vulnerable in our society?

After all is this not the whole point? It is a proven fact that those who live in care homes are far less likely to survive this

awful virus than others who are younger and more healthy.

I have found myself in a quite a few care homes over the years and have been surprised (or not!) that the homes depict-

ed on the media always seem to show highly efficient modern units, all computerised, with pristine environments and facilities, run by highly efficient and articulate staff. ‘The only reason for

the high rate of deaths in these establishments,’ spout many of those desperately striving to gain political points, ‘is the government’s failure to provide enough PPE equipment.’ But it’s not the only reason is it?

Having experienced the heartbreak of two beloved parents, who finally had to be moved to care homes, I can assure you that they are not all as wonderful as the media would like us to believe.

There are thousands of these lucrative private care homes scattered throughout the country, and quite a number that I have experienced are a positive disgrace.

While vainly searching for somewhere to place my dear Dad and later my Mum, I was appalled by the conditions in a whole host of these places.

Many of them stank of urine.

I saw others that were grubby and badly run by completely incompetent staff. Not a few

were run by immigrants, mainly from Pakistan, who, after taking advantage of government schemes to buy large houses, had brought all their relatives over to live in half of the house, while the ‘residents’ lived in the other half and were often tended by some of these relatives who had no qualifications whatsoever.

The speed that this virus could have run rampant through these poorly run establishments doesn’t bear thinking about PPE equipment or not.

No I truly am fed up with the way the media tries to twist the news to suit their political leanings or merely to pick up ratings by the promotion of sensationalism. Ah well. Go safe everyone.

To be honest I’m just fed up with it MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man WELL (at the time of writing this) we nearly got out and about except we live in Malaga Province so I’m grumpy about that. To be honest I’m so fed up with it all I’m just going to let them get on with it. I’m sure someone understands it all. The only thing I would say to all governments is stop making this worldwide disaster so partisan.

Stop trying to score points. If something needs to be passed to save lives don’t just block it because it was suggested by the ‘other side.’ America is by far the worst and I think Spain has a few problems. Maybe there should be cross party committees to stop this happening. Just an idea.

During this time of being at home I’ve been making a lot of calls via Facetime, WhatsApp, Skype and Zoom which mostly is fine but it does wind me up if the person I’m talking to is doing something else like walking around the

room at the same time making me feel like I’m on a rocking boat. Or they place the phone in such a way that I spend half the time staring at their forehead or up their nose. If you don’t know how to turn your camera on don’t make a video call at all - voice will do fine thanks.

As far as Zoom is concerned it’s also a good idea to learn how to use it before you disrupt the rest of the group by pressing all the buttons on the bottom of the screen. We use Zoom for a group of us that all have the same Orthostatic Tremor problem. We are all around 70ish so you can imagine the chaos of trying to work out how not to talk over each other. But we are getting there and the fact is this is going to be the way to have meetings for the foreseeable future.

Is anyone else having problems getting to see a doctor? I have had to renew my prescriptions by phone and cannot even get to talk to my diabetic doctor. My neumologist would only talk to me by phone. How can she tell how I am without a physical check-up? The daft thing was she left a prescription in reception so I had to drive to pick it up.

The car park was virtually empty but they still charged me to park there!

MEMORY BOX GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY WHEN I moved to Marbella last April, I travelled light. Extremely, light. I have been known to require a separate car for my luggage, on many occasions. However, the move to Spain was one I was unsure of, so my full wardrobe didn’t arrive with me.

The idea to make Spain my base, was met with uncertainty over whether it would suit. Meanwhile, life remained busy with social engagements, so I used the stores of Puerto Banus to fill in the gaps. After long deliberations over Marbella being the right place, my wardrobe and other deliveries arrived in December, but had yet to be opened and arranged.

As it rained, I opened the third box, of 11, and out fell old photographs, and press cuttings. I had to make a gin and tonic. Sitting on my hall floor, surrounded by chaos, I was transported back in time.

My mind racing, as I rummaged deeper in the treasure chest. In fairness, the majority of the photos remain a mystery, as my old life was filled with memory loss, rather than memories.

Most were taken at parties, or fashion shows. Funnily, some were of me on the catwalk.

I remember one night being asked to walk in a show, alongside my dear friend, the late, Tara Palmer-Tomkinson. I arrived pretty drunk, following a long lunch, to find that Tara had cheekily missed her flight. Told I would have to walk out solo, I froze. A room packed with guests and media, I felt self-aware. I felt wasted.

Somehow, the team dressed me and sent me out onto a runway that seemed to go on forever. I stood, dressed in Gucci, legs operating like jelly, and stared out into the darkness.

All I could see was the long road ahead. To the sound of Chic, I Want Your love, I strutted, well, more likely stumbled along. Arriving at the end of the catwalk, I posed for photographers for longer than required.

I think I was just relieved to have made it, without falling over. Turning, I bumped straight into the next model, knocking the poor girl off her Fendi heels. Everyone laughed, I died a little, immediately sobered up and we kept going. In life when we mess up, we have to keep going.

What’s the alternative?

CAT WALK: Strutting my stuff.

And that’s what we have to do right now - keep going. Writing this, on day 63 of lockdown, I feel confused. With still so much ‘normality’ to return, when and how, will it happen? Who knows, we simply must wake each day, and continue. While many things feel surreal, still so many people are hoping for a well-earned holiday.

Rather than live in limbo, perhaps it’s time to consider spending our chill time closer to home.

Possibly, because I live in one of Europe’s busiest tourist destinations, I receive many messages from people, asking if Marbella will reopen and be ready for their planned July visit. Will the airports be operating?

Listen, I have absolutely no idea. All I will say, is if this is something that’s seriously troubling you, perhaps consider a new plan. In the same way that I may not be able to travel to Italy, France or Ireland, you may not be able to come here.

So, I am looking at the option to spend the summer between Marbella and Ibiza. My family spent a lot of time on Isla Blanca in the late 70’s, and this year I imagine it will be a similar vibe.

A chilled, relaxed island, rather than a hedonistic party paradise. For me, the updates regarding air travel and border openings feel a little confusing and unsure, so why waste time living in hope?

Look at options that are achievable and book them. As I began to open box number four, I realised, that real memories, even when most are a blur, are the best thing we have.

This is a good time to sit, think, laugh, and at the end of the day, be grateful. As we’ll be free to make new memories soon.

Laura Rippin, Almeria “I would like to nominate Laura Rippin from Cantoria. She has a full-time commitment to her three lovely children, whom she is homeschooling, along with helping an elderly gentleman who is really poorly and helping those in the community who are unable to go shopping owing to the risk of the contagion.

She has also, for the past two years, been the main organiser of the Make

a Wish Foundation charity event in Cantoria (sadly this year’s event is unlikely to go ahead).

A recent example of her good nature is when a lady fell at home and was in fear of going to the medical centre owing to the contagion, so Laura went to her house to clean up the wound and reassure her.”

Now a lot of needy people, of all different nationalities in the area, are no longer going hungry because of the food parcels being collected and in turn distributed by Fred and Mick.

Mick and Fred made a plea for help to our community through their La Florida Friends Food Bank Initiative and the fantastic people in La Florida and surrounding areas were only too glad to donate to help their fellow neighbours.

Anthony has tirelessly kept his Facebook friends entertained throughout the Spanish lockdown.

He has maintained his online conversations all day every day with information from

the Spanish government translated and informative, including his exercise live videos, card/bingo games, guessing the song games, and general chit chat.

This was also in addition to delivering food to the community and helping the local businesses and much more.”

Joyce Gyimah, Costa del Sol “I would like to nominate Joyce Gyimah as a local hero. Joyce is the founder of the organisation Adintre which is now in charge together with Fuengirola Town Hall to take care of the homeless people during this Corona lockdown.

Without her perseverance, the premises to do all this would not have existed!

I have worked with Joyce cooking food for the homeless in the organisation Adintre in the past and helped out where I could. She started the foundation on her own and we used to cook in her home kitchen before she was able to find the premises near the feria ground and Fuengirola TV and radio station.

Sadly, I was diagnosed with COPD three years ago and have started to suffer the effects which restrict my stamina and mobility so, I would like to nominate a lady called Katy Pilditch who lives about one kilometre away who has been getting me my shopping needs during this awful virus pandemic.”

Kay Frances, Almeria “Kay started a Facebook page for women at the start of the lockdown as a platform to express feelings and frustrations. The page ‘Kaye Frances Ladies Only Sturdygirlsrus’ has grown to 690 members and has been an incredible success. I am amazed by how much information has been shared and indeed helped some quite desperate people not knowing which way to turn.

loads of problems when getting the premises to cook in and also to create a haven for the homeless people to get a haircut/shower or just to socialise. The premises were renovated finally thanks to the strength and vision of Joyce to push it through despite all the problems on the way.

WHAT do you miss most about lockdown? Your favourite restaurants?

Going away on holiday?

Travelling wherever and whenever you want?

As for me, my ‘best restaurants ever’ are never solely defined by the food I ate there. They’re invariably connected to special occasions in my life, to the people I shared them with, and a certain atmosphere which is created by the combination of it all. The time of year, the weather (really important, the weather: it shapes the taste of foods), the place, the food, the company, and the occasion.

It’s strange how very distinctly I remember those memorable eating-out occasions. Even those

which were decades ago, I can still smell and taste.

Maybe at home you’ve managed to recreate dishes that bring back happy travel memories?

Or you recall places you’ve visited that have given you immense pleasure?

I have a few places where I am at my happiest which are out of bounds now. In my mind I take myself on a favourite walk in one of those places. Of course, looking at photographs is a great way of evoking memories too. But I’d better stop, I’m getting car-

Finally, lockdown restrictions are gradually being eased in Europe. In Italy the first businesses to reopen were bars. In Greece, it was churches, hairdressers and bookshops. BY NICOLE KING DUE to lockdown people are challenging themselves on all levels, some just trying to dominate new technology like Zoom to either carry on business meetings, TV shows or just to keep in touch with friends and family.

Others are facing destitution.

During these times even businesses that one could never have imagined closing down have had to cease and desist; challenging for even the most successful of companies. None of us are without consequence.

Some are managing to adapt to the unusual conditions, even find opportunities as a result of the new demands upon our society. Some have had time to take stock of their lives and reflect upon new opportunities for the future.

Others haven’t even had a chance to breathe with all the studying, cooking, cleaning and constant entertaining of quarantined kids. I can’t begin to imagine how stressed parents with youngsters in confided spaces, without even a gar-

We are living in a situation like none other, a time to reach out for help without shame nor timidity, a time to stand up and be counted, whether to offer help or be on the receiving end.

On a different note is the interview with young author Charlie Mills who started off this week’s programming.

He wants to help young children grow up with high selfesteem, beautifully reflected in his new book ‘It’s Cool to be Me.’ The story is directed at three to eight-year-olds. Personally I think it should be in all schools and read by all adults too as our world has become far too demanding with far too much emphasis on results and material things; without mention to our personal wellbeing. Children need a childhood and to know that being authentic and true to oneself is actually what should take priority in life. Our children would never have experienced a different culture and lear ned a new language at such a young age. We knew these people cared for us, but we knew what WE wanted to do. We

FREEDOM FIGHTER DEAR Euro Weekly News, Please don’t take away my one hour in the evening for exercise!

I am in remission from lung cancer, and very vulnerable, and the 7-8pm hour to take a walk safely and get some fresh air is a saviour for me, after nearly eight weeks of not leaving the house at all, I do enjoy my evening walk, knowing there will not be 100s of people out walking and putting my health at risk!

At 8pm when I make my way home there are literally 100s of people and lunatics racing past on bikes, and not adhering to social distancing rules, and it would be very unsafe for me to walk amongst all these people.

I may be over 70, but one hour in the evening to walk is not too much to ask, surely?

I am over 70, but just as important as every other member of society! And I wait all day for 7pm to come, so I can go out for some fresh air.

PLEASE DO NOT TAKE AWAY THE LITTLE BIT OF FREEDOM YOU HAVE GIVEN ME!!!!!!

OUR VIEW Soft touch DESPITE becoming the worst-hit country in Europe, Boris Johnson seems to be enjoying the peak of his popularity curve. Italy and the UK are the two European nations most badly affected by Covid-19.

Italians, who constitute a sizeable community in the UK, are heartbroken that the British people are suffering the same fate as their home country. Some have taken to social media to chastise the ‘reluctance’ and ‘naivety’ of the PM when it came to containing the pandemic, despite having watched the Covid-19 hell unfold in Italy.

When a lockdown was eventually enforced in the UK, many Italians couldn’t understand why people in Britain were allowed to jog, go for a walk or simply leave home without showing papers to the police. When Britain recently became the country with the worst coronavirus death toll in Europe, many Italians grieved in shock. To others, it was only to be expected given the UK’s relaxed lockdown.

Italians are now leaving the UK in droves to go back to their home country, according to the Italian embassy in London. The initially soft Covid-19 approach of the UK government generated a great deal of fear among Italians, and they decided it made more sense to leave. Just like the Brits, Italians are enormously proud of their healthcare system, which, not surprisingly, was mentioned by Johnson as an example of an excellent healthcare system unable to cope with the waves of victims from the pandemic.

Of course, every country has made its own mistakes against this invisible enemy. Italy made huge ones. Yet many in Italy are still wondering why the UK didn’t act immediately against the virus after the immense suffering in southern Europe. This has now generated a sort of general scepticism and distrust toward the British authorities among Italian citizens.

Pleasure in power Dear Euro Weekly News, I hope I am wrong.

It is my feeling that Bill Gates knows that this pandemic was just a trial run to see who obeys the lockdown and who didn’t. How long people stayed in their homes before they rebelled. What ages were involved and what types of people? How effective was their control of the media and use of AI to remove videos that were against the status quo?

The next pandemic will probably be very soon as they will not want the countries affected to recover economically.

It will probably be a mutated version of CV and they will seed it in areas where it will spread the fastest and kill the most people. This time what the virus does not kill, food shortages will.

The fact that Bill Gates is already warning us as he did the last time that another pandemic is on the cards it will happen because he will make sure it does. This psychopath takes pleasure in his power to create fear and panic on a greater level than Stalin, Mao and Hitler especially as he will be responsible for its release.

But this time the vaccine will magically appear and will be ready with some form of microchip or identity system ready to inject the world population for the coming One World Government. The One World leader the Biblical antichrist.

I can understand the reluctance to accept overseas visitors, but the world is currently grinding to a halt.

Surely there are measures that can be taken to introduce overseas visitors which that can keep the potential health impact to a minimum. We’ve made great progress so far and it would be good to think we could show the world the way and make it a success.

Or maybe you rant, unloading all of your worries on your mum. You might even type a long email to a trusted friend, laying bare all your worries.

Talking through your fragile feelings with a trusted friend or loved one works much like talk therapy, discussing your anxieties helps you sort out your true feelings.

But letting off too much steam isn’t healthy, either. If your venting comes out as rage, or you’re thinking obsessively over an idea or choice, your health may be at risk so make sure your venting remains constructive.

How to help someone who reaches out If your friend is going through a difficult time, offer a shoulder to cry on and an ear to listen. Ignore the

temptation to offer advice - now isn’t the time for multitasking with some Candy Crush or Facebook.

But if you suspect their troubles run deeper, encourage them to seek professional help, speak to a doctor.

Hiding away Hiding out under the covers can seem like the only option when you’re feeling sad. Besides, every time you step out into society, it feels like taking a risk. Will you cry in public? Will you say yet another stupid thing that worsens your bad mood?

In certain situations, wallowing is acceptable - give yourself time to heal after something bad happens.

There’s no shame in an extended break from the big scary world.

The more you fold in on yourself, the more difficult it becomes to reach out for help from a friend or a therapist.

How to help someone that just wants to hide away If you’re worried about a f r i e n d who has dropped off the face of the p l a n e t , tread carefully. Not everyone is receptive to a suggestion that might be dealing with a condition like depression. Waiting for them to reach out may be the best strategy.

But if you haven’t heard from them in a while, consider sending a message. Let them know you care and want to talk to them. Don’t push the issue, but leave an opening for further communication.

Once they’re ready, they’ll reach out.

La Sala Banus reopens

NOW that Malaga Province has entered into Phase 1, one of Marbella’s most iconic restaurants La Sala Banus will reopen on Friday May 22 for service on an expanded terrace.

Initially, they will only be open from 12pm to 2am on Friday, Saturday and Sunday but hope to return to a full seven-day a week service as soon as it is permissible and can be properly managed, taking into account all health and safety measures.

Tables on the terrace will be placed in a manner to ensure proper social distancing and as they are limited to a 50 per cent capacity, La Sala encour-

Sala Group Chairman, Ian Radford said “Whilst this is good news for our staff and customers, we are cautious as we enter this next phase.

“The tight measures required will make this a challenge for us however, we have made some changes to the venue by increasing the outdoor space.

“We are very much looking forward to the flights returning once it is safe to do so, to allow us to get fully back up to speed with all our venues.”

Royal Albert Hall at Home THE Royal Albert Hall in London is known worldwide for the concerts of all types performed there but currently the doors are closed.

Every week however they stream free concerts performed by artists from their homes and next concerts are; May 21 - Scouting for Girls. May 29 - Imogen Heap. May 30 - Classical for Kids and Kaiser Chiefs.

There is a huge archive of past performances with music of all types ranging from Katherine Jenkins on VE Day to Rufus Wainwright.

The concerts are under the banner Royal Albert Home and are easy to access on its website.

AS far as Take That fans are concerned, at least one good thing has come out of the pandemic and this is the news that they are reforming with Robbie Williams for the four of them to put together a virtual charity concert.

Sounds Simples (as the meerkats say) but it will take some considerable expertise to transmit on the Compare the Meerkat YouTube and Facebook channels at 8pm (9pm in Spain) on Friday May 29.

It’s a charity special with funds raised being shared between two groups, music therapy charity Nordoff Robbins and Crew Nation, who are helping to support concert crew during the coronavirus outbreak.

There is no news of Jason Orange and it is assumed that he will not be taking part but for many fans, the return of Robbie to perform Take That’s greatest hits with Gary Barlow, Mark Owen and Howard Donald is the

This week Celebrity Chef & Master Chef Steven Saunders, proprietor of The Little Geranium in La Cala cooks a special Marbella style chicken using local campo chicken and olives.

A WELL-KNOWN American chef friend of mine introduced me to a dish a few years ago called Chicken Marbella which is a dish made famous from a US cook book called Silver Palate.

To be honest it wasn’t sensational! I was a guest in his restaurant, so I did the cowardly thing and told him that it was excellent! But the idea struck a chord in my mind and I always planned to do something with it.

It is basically chicken and olives put into a marinade of vinegar, white wine and sugar with prunes and then slow cooked in the oven with oregano. But I wanted to adapt it so that the marinade really sinks into the chicken and then I have added mild chillies and chorizo, white cooked beans, roasted peppers and a

lot of sherry which all give it big punchy flavours.

Chicken Marbella is intended to be simple almost like a peasant’s meal, but it needed a bit more work to make it special.

Michele isn’t vegetarian but she doesn’t really eat meat although she will eat chicken if it is campo (free range).

She might eat beef if it is top quality and when it’s well done but not too often, she won’t eat lamb or pork or any other bird like duck or quail or even a poussin and meat on the bone is taboo as she doesn’t like to see what the animal part looked like. A chef’s nightmare basically!

In other words, it’s not easy coming up with vegetarian dishes that I might also enjoy and chicken dishes are not that straightforward either as she won’t eat carbs so anything with pasta or rice is a no no!

She does eat fish but only fresh white fish with absolutely no bones. She will not eat crustaceans or molluscs. So, you are getting the drift here… It’s really difficult coming up with a meal every day that she will

Michele says she eats most things ... enjoy unless it’s a salad and that isn’t always my kind of meal! If you ask her, she will tell you that she is not at all difficult and that she eats most things… believe me she doesn’t!

Cooking for Michele takes me back to my younger years in my 30’s when my girls were growing up. I would come home from the restaurants and cook for Serena and Stefanie my two lovely daughters and

Sally my ex-wife.

We grew a lot of fresh vegetables and herbs in the home garden, so I always headed for the veg garden first to see what was ready and then cooked it up with some meat or fish.

Serena wouldn’t eat pasta and didn’t like fish unless it was scallops or lobster. Stefanie didn’t like to eat meat and didn’t like vegetables but she loved pasta, Serena wouldn’t eat minced meat but Stef loved mince and Sally liked healthy low carb meals using fresh organic meat or wild and longline caught fish, nothing difficult about all that then.

One day I had a really stressful day in the kitchens and one of my chefs had walked out. I came home with some good quality free range chicken and planned a baked chicken dish with olives, vegetables and herbs from the garden and roasted peppers, baked with tri colour pasta and glazed with cheese.

I was planning the dish for a new cook book I was writing on quick foods. Serena imme-

diately moaned about the pasta and the peppers, Stef moaned about the chicken and the vegetables and Sally moaned that it was too rich and too carby. I was building up to a melt down! … I stood up and yelled… “You lot have ruined my life!!” They all stopped in their tracks and said “excuse me? What did you say?” “Sorry” I said “I was supposed to say can you please pass the salt!”

Chicken Marbella should be perfect for Michele, she loves olives and beans and fresh herbs and will eat a little chicken (breast only) if I overcook it.

This dish has no real carbs and the sauce is made from the marinade so it’s healthy, easy to cook and as we are all still cooking at home, it’s an ideal dish to put in the centre of the table and let everyone dig in.

“So, Michele, what do you think of my version of Chicken Marbella?” I ask . “Well it needs more flavour,” she said, “it needs more peppers, more chillies and more beans and less sherry.” “Ok,” I said...”

Can you pass the salt!”

If you want to be a bit naughty it is delicious served with crusty bread from the oven or a side order of pasta!

Special Marbella style chicken Ingredients 1 whole campo (free range) Spanish chicken 2 tablespoons of olive oil 3 cloves garlic peeled and chopped 150g of pitted prunes save a little juice (optional) 150g of green olives stuffed with peppers or plain 40g of small capers or 30g of caper berries 1 lemon 100ml of red wine vinegar 1 tablespoon dried oregano (fresh is better) 375ml of medium sherry or white wine 2 heaped tbsp of soft brown sugar 1 whole chilli deseeded

and chopped thinly 150g of roasted red peppers in a jar 150g of white cooked beans (Alubia blanco) 1 piquant chorizo about 30cm long cut into slices of about ½ cm 1 tablespoon of chicken stock granules Salt and pepper Sprigs of fresh coriander or parsley to finish Method Pre heat the oven to 160ºC Joint the chicken so that you have two drumsticks, two thighs and two breast pieces (cut away from the bone).

Cut the breasts in half so that

you have four breast pieces.

All with skin on.

Now pour over the vinegar, sherry (or wine) the sugar, the oregano and garlic, the olives and prunes and a little prune juice and the capers.

Marinade covered in the fridge for 24 hours or the night before.

Remove the chicken pieces and in a hot skillet pan or deep casserole add the olive oil and seal to get the skin coloured and a bit crispy.

Add the chorizo and cook till coloured.

Pour the marinade over the chicken and chorizo (with all the olives, prunes etc in it)

and allow the marinade to simmer in the pan, but do not totally cover the chicken as we want the skins to be crispy. Now sprinkle in the chicken granules and stir well in and put in the chillies, red peppers and the beans.

Put the casserole in the oven for about 45 minutes, do not cover.

Check that the chicken is lovely and tender if not leave it in a little longer.

Remove it carefully from the oven as it will be very hot, squeeze the lemon over it and sprinkle with the parsley or coriander and serve steaming hot.

Quite frankly, I’m gobsmacked at how many friends and local people are now falling for the Covid Conspiracies! There seemed to be a spike in them after the State of Alarm was extended.

Old habits die hard

HELLO all. My name is John Sharples. I’ve loved my life in Spain for 23 years. I’ve lived in the Canaries, Balearics and currently live on the mainland. I’m a busy bee. This must be a very awkward time for many of my Spanish friends. Here, we are a very touchy feely bunch. We kiss on each cheek at the drop of a hat or hug when we meet someone and again when we leave their company.

Oh yes! We are very tactile. Hands are always flying around and patting you on the shoulder or back.

With just one day’s notice, this centuries old tradition came to an abrupt standstill and I have my doubts whether it will ever return. I for one won’t miss all the slobbering one bit. It can take ages to arrive into a group of people as they grab you for a double kiss and twice as long to say goodbye.

My Mallorcan neighbour, having spotted me in the street, once grabbed me forcefully by both shoulders and pulled me towards him so hard, to treat me to the usual air kiss bonanza, that we both almost fell off the kerb. It frightened the life out of me. There is nothing effeminate about it at all. I thought I was being attacked.

I call the double cheek kiss ‘theatrical.’ Being an entertainer it is quite normal to hug and kiss people in the UK. We don’t hold back. Us entertainers are a tactile lot. Putting your hand on someone’s leg, knee or shoulder when you’re talking to them is perfectly normal, although these days many call it physical abuse. You have to be very careful who you do it to. I have been slapped more than once and been left there standing in amazement. I suppose it’s a case of what we are used to as individuals.

I suspect that we’ll all be subconsciously self-distancing for some time to come, but at one point the kisses and hugs will return.

Yes, it’s an awful situation, with no real winners at the end. But there is no ideal solution to solve it either. Even if people don’t like or trust this

government, the virus is real.

There is no valid reason why the WHO, all the other worldwide governments, doctors, scientists, care workers etc would all tell the same unanimous lie to us! The world has never agreed on anything!

Unless we’re getting back that New World Order theory

- the belief that the Illuminate and lizards in the moon are controlling everything (yes, some people do believe that!). My brain hurts just thinking about what people believe!

It is an awful situation and the hardships we face will be enormous. But let’s not lose touch with reality. Just weeks ago, the same people that had ‘Stay Home’ badges on their Facebook profiles and were proudly clapping at 8pm every night are now saying it’s all a scam. Some are even banging pans and shouting in anger, instead!

Nothing has changed in those few weeks, only that the numbers of infections and deaths were coming down.

We must have been on the right path for that to happen, can we get back on it, please? Deep breaths and think rationally. Maybe try some meditation.

It’ll be impossible to rebuild the economy if we’re all in the looney bin!

AMERICAN diplomats are reportedly furious on the news that Interpol has issued an international arrest warrant for ex-US diplomat’s wife Anne Sacoolas, the alleged killer of teenager Harry Dunn.

Washington officials were “furious” to learn UK police had put an international wanted notice out for Anne Sacoolas, the

American woman charged over 19-year-old Harry’s death last year, the Mail on Sunday reports.

Harry Dunn was killed when his motorbike collided with a car outside a US military base in Northamptonshire on August 27 last year. Anne Sacoolas, 42, the wife of a US intelligence official based at RAF Croughton, claimed diplomatic immunity after

the crash and was able to return to her home country.

She was charged with causing death by dangerous driving in December, but an extradition request submitted by the Home Office was rejected by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in January, a decision the State Department has since described as “final.”
