The sun is now shining down on us after weeks of unpredictable weather. With a majority of the country now in Phase 1, we have learnt to appreciate the things we used to take for granted.

Phase 1 allows us to go and visit friends and family in their homes, to give them a hug and tell them how much they mean to us in person after months of

video calls.

You can now take a long walk on the beach or in the countryside and take in the beauty of your surroundings after months of being pent up inside.

You can pop into your neighbour hood businesses, shop, and contribute back to your local community who has, in no doubt, been struggling significantly during this unexpected crisis.

Now you can also retur n to your favourite bar and soak up the rays of sunshine on its terrace, meet up with friends, have a laugh and have a drink to celebrate your reunion.

Despite having these new, more relaxed, measures we should be

Phase 1 vs Phase 2 MOST of Spain is currently in Phase 1 of the de-escalation plan, however, some areas such as La Gomera or El Hierro are currently in Phase 2.

Seeing as regulations are constantly changing under new decrees, it is important to know the difference on what you are allowed to do within your phase and what you cannot do.

Neither in Phase 1 or Phase 2 can you leave the province, mobility between provinces is still prohibited and is expected to recommence at a later date.

In Phase 1 family and friends can hold reunions at homes, within the same province, of up to 10 people.

These meetings should not include any vulnerable risk groups. Funerals and wakes will also be allowed for a limited number of people, 15 if its open-air and 10 if it’s in a

capacities. Places of worship and shops will amplify their capacity from 30 per cent to 50 per cent.

Restaurants and bars with over 70sqm will begin serving clients inside at 30 per cent capacity and with table service only. Shopping centres will also re-open but at 40 per cent capacity but with no

common spaces. Theatres and cinemas will also reopen at 30 per cent capacity.

The newest regulation to be announced under this phase is the reopening of swimming pools and beaches, which will also be controlled. Pools will be capped at 30 per cent capacity and beaches will have to ensure a two-metre distance between individuals. The maximum number of people allowed at the beach as a group is 15, unless these all live together.

It is important to note that with these added freedoms comes an added sense of responsibility which we as citizens of a community must uphold. If sanitary conditions worsen or populations act irresponsibly then there is a possibility of being either held back in the same phase or even demoted to the previous phase.

Garzon’s “contemptuous” words scorned the work of so many business-owners and employees, he said.

Market traders prefer to wait NERJA’S Commerce councillor Javier Lopez announced that the open-air market held on Tuesdays will remain closed for the time being.

The decision came from the stallholders themselves, Lopez said, owing to the central government’s measures restricting open-air markets to a quarter of their normal size with a third of the usual number of clients at any one time.

Following a meeting with the UNECA and AVAM associations that represent the market traders regionally and provincially, Nerja’s stallholders decided not to set up the open-air mercadillo.

Instead, depending on the conditions that are announced, they will wait until Andalucia enters Phase Three or Phase Four of the central government’s de-escalation programme.

According to official figures from the Junta de Andalucia’s Health department, this was the third case detected in Axarquia’s inland area within 48 hours.

Iznate also recorded its first case on Saturday last week, with another diagnosed in Benarmargosa.

On the coast, Rincon de la Victoria had two more cases, bringing the town’s total to 138. With one more case, Velez-Malaga now has 135 while Nerja, also with another case now has 10.

Archez, Canillas de Albaida, Sayalonga, El Borge, Comares, Cutar, Alfarnatejo, Canillas de Aceituno, Salares, Sedella, Viñuela, Totalan and Macharaviaya are the 13 Axarquia municipalities without any known coronavirus cases.

First taste of freedom IT was the moment we had all been waiting for, that first taste of freedom that the majority of us had been able to have for two months. The enforced confinement had pushed us into facing unprecedented challenges, luckily from the safety from our own homes.

This Monday we were finally allowed to visit family we had missed dearly, go for a coffee or a beer, catch up with friends, go to the shops and a number of other things we had previously taken for granted.

As residents and businesses try to grasp some kind of a normal life, Euro Weekly News spoke members of the public in Axarquia to see how they were enjoying the first few days of Phase 1.

Taxi-driver used as drugs mule TWO men were arrested in Motril and Almuñecar for tricking a taxi-driver into picking up and delivering drugs.

The men, of Spanish nationality, were aged 50 and 46 and the younger has a police record.

The Almuñecar-based man booked a taxi, explaining that he needed company paperwork to be taken to Motril for signing and then returned.

The cabby delivered a bag with the documents to a property on the outskirts of Motril where they were picked up and returned several minutes later.

Patrolling police, observing the transaction, followed the taxi which they stopped and searched, finding the bag of documents which contained an envelope with 10 doses of methadone, eight wraps of heroin and five grammes of cocaine.

The taxi-driver explained that he was unaware of the transaction, while the two men were subsequently arrested and charged.

Big order SUPERMARKET chain Mercadona’s purchases of local avocados rose by 30 per cent to 7,100 tons during the 2020 campaign.

This began last December, when the fruit was at its ripest and most tasty, and continued until May.

Barking mad

Face masks Obligatory SPAIN’S government has announced that the use of face masks will now be obligatory in public spaces across the country to prevent Covid-19 contagion.

It is obligatory to wear face masks on all public transport, confined public spaces, as well as in the streets if the minimum social distance of two metres can’t be maintained.

Health Minister Salvador Illa confirmed the new legislation on May 18 as it was an issue that all regional governments had agreed on. Illa stated that “masks must be worn on all public transport, including buses, trains, taxis, as well as

closed public spaces, and outdoors where adequate social distancing cannot be maintained.”

It’s also a recommendation from the World Health Organisation (WHO) to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

However, WHO has acknowledged, along with other health organisations, that face masks can be problematic for some people, for example, those who suffer from anxiety or respiratory conditions. The other concern people have is the potential environmental pollution if face masks are not discarded properly.

A 56-YEAR-OLD Motril man was arrested and charged with stabbing a neighbour who needed hospital treatment for minor wounds.

According to National Police sources quoted in the Spanish media, he had quarrelled in the past with a neighbour, also Spanish and aged 43, who complained about his constantly-barking dog.

New bins RINCON DE LA VICTORIA Town Hall is replacing deteriorated communal rubbish containers with 100 new 1,000-litre capacity pedal-operated models.

These are principally distributed in outlying neighbourhoods where containers are more often damaged, owing to the heavy use they are subjected to.

Marie Gardner gives something back MARIE GARDNER, who lives in Viñuela, is raising cash for VelezMalaga hospital with handmade face masks.

When the Covid-19 State of Alarm and lockdown arrived in March, face masks were in worryingly short supply and Marie decided to make her own, using odds and ends of fabric that she had at home.

After her friend Linda Edwards put a photo of Marie’s masks on her Facebook page, other people asked her to make more but instead of selling them, she asks

The objectives of the Social Council, which Moreno Ferrer presides, are to collaborate with the local government and actively contribute to the running of VelezMalaga with ideas and solutions.

He explained that this body would join spokespersons for political parties on the local council and the Social Economic Technical Committee who are currently analysing proposals for social unity and the reactivation of the local economy.

“With this meeting, the local government wishes to contribute to creating a package of specific measures, based on citizens’ proposals, to help strengthen local businesses, tourism and social cohesion so that normal activities are resumed as soon as possible,” Moreno Ferrer declared.

“This is a much-used road, not only by the area’s agricultural growers but also residents and those visiting the various warehouses in the area,” Gonzalez Orce said when inspecting the new lights.

“We have now installed the first five which are equipped with 35-watt lamps.”

The solar-powered lights, which have cost a total of €5,000, including labour costs, will also bring savings on energy and upkeep costs, the councillor pointed out.

Remembering Verano Azul’s creator NERJA recently marked the second anniversary of the death of the film and television director and scriptwriter, Antonio Mercero.

Born in 1936 in Lasarte-Oria (Guipuzcoa) in northern Spain, Mercero will never be forgotten in Nerja because he chose it as the setting for his television drama series, Verano Azul, which was broadcast between October 1981 and February 1982. “It changed the history of Nerja,” declared a town hall statement on the anniversary of his death.

Nerja Town Hall gave Mercero the Freedom of the Town in 1982 when they named him Hijo Adoptivo.

Twenty years after the first episode aired in 2001, Playa Burriana’s seafront promenade was named after him, together with a plaque and sculpture in his memory.

Nerja also boasts a replica of La Dorada, the boat that belonged to one of the series’ characters, a retired fisherman called Chanquete and the Verano Azul park.

No fleas to tease dog-walkers TORROX Town Hall has disinfected and de-parasited the perimeter of the access to the dogsallowed beach and its perimeter.

The beach is located at the mouth of the River Torrox and insects thrive in the area’s bushes and undergrowth once the temperature starts to rise, explained Beaches

councillor Veronica Muñoz who recently visited the beach with Torrox mayor Oscar Medina.

Her department is creating an insect and parasite-free barrier that is to be carried out in two phases, with a repetition of this first operation next month, Muñoz said.

The zone has been

treated to eliminate fleas and ticks so that owners can walk their dogs without worries, the councillor added.

Tiger mosquitoes are also being targeted, using insecticides including effervescent tablets that are added to the pools, ponds and fountains where they tend to breed.

Getting ready to return to work NERJA Town Hall is preparing for the gradual return of staff who have been working from home until now.

Nerja mayor Jose Alberto Armijo, Human Resources councillor Angela Diaz and union representative met recently to make plans in line with the de-escalation phases set by the central government in Madrid.

These will at all times guarantee that personnel can carry out their jobs in safety, Diaz stressed.

Staff of the one-stop Ventanilla Unica and Citizens’ Attention at the town hall have already returned to work or are in the process of doing so, as well as the Local Police, Proteccion Civil and those carrying out municipal services that include streetcleaning and public work.

Meanwhile, the town hall will remain closed until Nerja enters the appropriate de-escalation phase that permits this.

Both the mayor and the human resources councillor expressed gratitude for the “exemplary behaviour” of Nerja’s municipal employees in such a complicated situation.

They also informed the union representatives that they would be receiving full details of the measures discussed at the meeting from the Human Resources department.

Indoor grower A 20-YEAR-OLD was arrested in Velez-Malaga for growing marihuana in his home.

Following a tipoff on the www.@policia website, a search of his home by Velez-Malaga’s National Police found 73 marihuana plants at different stages of growth.

As well as drugs charges he also faces prosecution for making an illegal electricity connection to avoid paying high energy bills.

Seprona trace heartless owner THE Guardia Civil are investigating a 57year-old Velez-Malaga man, accused of abandoning a dog in Salobreña.

The SOS Animales Salobreña animal protection association reported the man after the dog, an old female greyhound, was found wandering in the street.

The dog was undernourished and ridded with parasites, tumours and scars, a Guardia Civil statement revealed.

The Guardia Civil’s nature protection unit Seprona based in Motril took over the investigation and have now traced the

They should have a current fishing licence and, as with all activities during deescalation, safety measures must be observed.

Anglers should be at a safe distance from other users but if this is not possible, masks must be worn.

Neither fishing tackle nor utensils used for eating or drinking may be shared and the spaces anglers have occupied must be left clean with no equipment left behind.

Digital tax OFFICIALS all across the world are now trying to grapple with ways to try and tax companies such as Facebook and even Google. Spain’s own government have just approved a digital services tax.

This is coming after a very similar move came from the US. The levy is going to place a total tax rate of 3 per cent on earnings that come from online ads and any deals that might be brokered on digital platforms.

The budget minister who is Maria Jesus Montero has stated that the tax is not going to come into place until December and that this is going to allow the organisation for Economic Corporation and Development to come to an agreement on a separate global tax.

Lufthansa restarting flights Workers suffering PTSD

REACTIVATION: Lufthansa, Eurowings and Swiss will up the flight offer to Spain from 14 to 61 connections a week in the first fortnight of June.

LUFTHANSA group airlines are restarting flights between Ibiza, Mallorca and Valencia and six German and one Swiss city at the beginning of June.

The Lufthansa, Eurowings and Swiss flight offer to Spain will increase from 14 to 61 connections a week between June 1 and 14.

Reservations are already being taken for the services connecting the two Balearic Islands and Valencia with the two northern European

countries.

Eurowings will be offering five weekly flights to Mallorca from Cologne, five from Dusseldorf, and four from Munich and two services a week between Dusseldor f and Ibiza.

Swiss is flying four times a week from Zurich to Valencia, as well as operating six weekly connections with Barcelona and three to Madrid.

Spain’s borders stay closed THE country has announced that it is extending a travel ban to all non-essential visitors through to June 15, which matches the European Union policy to do the same.

MORE than half of Spain’s health staff working in hospitals during the coronavirus crisis have symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder and 80 per cent are suffering from anxiety, a new study reveals.

Preliminary results from an investigation carried out by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid Work Psychology and Safety Studies Laboratory show that 53 per cent of hospital health workers display symptoms compatible with PTSD and 79.5 per cent have symptoms of anxiety, of which 21.2 per cent could be severe cases.

The study is based on the experience of 1,243 health workers at different hospitals. Nine out of 10 work in Madrid, Spain’s worst affected area by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The investigators concluded that psychological support for health workers is advisable, warning that if there were to be a second wave of the virus “we will find ourselves dealing with emotionally damaged professionals and with a health system without the capacity to respond.”

A MORE than eight-metre long shark has appeared cruising around just 400 metres or so from a beach in Polopos on Granada’s Costa Tropical.

Saturday’s sighting of the basking shark in front of the La Mamola beach follows reports at the beginning of the month of a much smaller one, around three

metres, in front of a beach in Calahonda just down the coast towards Motril.

The Guardia Civil said that while this species of shark, the second largest in the world, is not known to attack man, its Maritime Service advises the public not to get too close to the creature in boats or kayaks.

THE British budget airline easyJet admitted on Tuesday that hackers were able to access their database and steal the email, travel details and credit card details of around nine million customers, in what has been branded as a “highly sophisticated” attack.

The company is already facing serious backlash from customers who had booked flights with the airline to holiday favourite destinations which have now been cancelled due to the virus and the restrictions it has posed on the tourism industry. Now they must also worry about their information being jeopardised in the latest breach of information.

In a statement released to the stock exchange, easyJet has argued that it “takes issues of security extremely seriously and will continue to invest to further enhance [their] security environment.”

Big Flight Fall SPAIN’S airports have produced some truly astonishing and unwanted figures because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The airports run by state-run operator, Aena, reported that they were part of a 99.4 per cent collapse in passenger numbers in April across the whole of Spain, as a result of the State of Alarm measures. The Aena network logged just 141,014 passengers, down by an eye-watering 99.4 per cent compared to April 2019.

Freight volumes also fell by 94 per cent last month, in comparison to the figures from 12 months earlier.

Aena declared that its first-quarter net profit plummeted by 83 per cent as a result of the early stages of the coronavirus lockdown.

Temperature checks THE Spanish government has announced that all arrivals at Spanish airports are to have their temperatures checked on arrival.

The measure, published in the official bulletin, will last until June 15 but could be extended beyond this date.

In a move that severely affects the already beleaguered tourism industry; the new regulation coincides with the extension on the restrictions on non-essential travel for people coming into Spanish territory, which will be in place for another month. It also comes on the same day that the 14-day quarantine for international visitors came into effect in Spain.

THE Covid-19 crisis is causing a major distancing between Spanish society and its political representatives.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez had intended to push Congress for a 30-day extension of the State of Alarm to ‘cover until the end of the de-escalation.’

However, Sánchez has not received the back up he had hoped for and has had to settle for another 15 days, which is the period for which the State of Alarm has been extended since it was decreed on March 14.

Sánchez explained that, since it is a “completely different phase,” it will have modifications towards the “institutional de-escalation.”

For this, he was negotiating with the Catalonia and Basque parties for their votes of agreement, but has been let down by their refusal.

However, it was thought that these two parties weren’t necessarily voting with regard to Covid, rather that they would have been making a gesture in hope of future backing when it comes to re-

visiting discussions on their independence.

On the other hand, in the battle for Madrid, Sanchez is also negotiating with Ciudadanos who seem to be more interested in a vote of no confidence for the president of Madrid’s autonomous community.

Which from Sanchez’ point of view would be a great benefit to him.

It’s all about tactics where all try to undermine their opposition.

If the parties currently supporting Sanchez back out this could then make way for a vote of no confidence which would then put his position up for re-election.

Meanwhile, by extending the State of Alarm further it is forcing the people on the street or the common man to seek support from social aid and charities just to be able to have basic necessities.

Spain’s electorate seems to have little memory of this and the political parties know this therefore they could push for general elections and once all the important positions have been negotiated just another reboot.

Not enough plastic

EVEN though there are some indus­ tries that have benefited from the Covid­19 pandemic such as suppli­ ers of plastic sheets for safety screens, even they are suffering.

According to the British Plastics Federation, some firms aren’t likely to be able to supply the necessary acrylics until the end of July and as more shops and offices open, so the demand just keeps increasing.

As organisations like Uber and mini cab firms are now trialling the addition of screens in their cars, the supply situation can only get worse.

It would be uneconomic to move some of the production from Spain to France if no French factory has the tooling available to take over the work, but with France looking to move into an all­electric vehicle scenario by 2030, any production for new models is more likely to take place in France than see new plant for Spain.

2. Yes, it can be made ‘legal’ by amending the original statutes of the community to include the prohibition of pool access.

3. No, the Property Registry will not reject the amendment.

All of the above depends on court decisions and not laws.

This is why I put ‘legal’ between quotation marks. One court has ruled that pool access can be prohibited if it is written in the statutes. And, yes, you can amend your statutes by a unanimous vote. This is highly unlikely.

Another large loan THE Spanish construction compa­ ny OHL has entered into an agree­ ment with a number of banks to borrow €140 million in order to protect its liquidity.

As is becoming more common with large loans, a condition was that it should be substantially guaranteed by the Official Credit Institute (ICO) which is an arm of Spain’s government and it has ac­ cepted a 70 per cent risk.

The loan is due to be repaid the end of October 2021 by which time the company expects busi­ ness to return to normal.

Spanish hotels must change MANUEL VEGAS, President of the Spanish Association of Hotel Directors (AEDH) predicts that as hotels try to return to normal once allowed to reopen, there will have to be some major changes in the way they operate.

Firstly, the concept of a breakfast buffet will have to disappear as it would be impossible to observe so­ cial distancing and the old­fash­ ioned continental breakfast will make a return with many travellers deciding to eat in their rooms.

She has a full-time commitment to her three lovely children, whom she is homeschooling, along with helping an elderly gentleman who is really poorly and helping those in the community who are unable to go shopping owing to the risk of the contagion.

She has also, for the past two years, been the main organiser of the Make

a Wish Foundation charity event in Cantoria (sadly this year’s event is unlikely to go ahead).

A recent example of her good nature is when a lady fell at home and was in fear of going to the medical centre owing to the contagion, so Laura went to her house to clean up the wound and reassure her.”

Without her perseverance, the premises to do all this would not have existed!

I have worked with Joyce cooking food for the homeless in the organisation Adintre in the past and helped out where I could. She started the foundation on her own and we used to cook in her home kitchen before she was able to find the premises near the feria ground and Fuengirola TV and radio station.

The page ‘Kaye Frances Ladies Only Sturdygirlsrus’ has grown to 690 members and has been an incredible success. I am amazed by how much information has been shared and indeed helped some quite desperate people not knowing which way to turn.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT NUMBERS seem to be at the top of the priority list among the politicians and media these days. Numbers of deaths here, numbers of cases there, percentages of victims from this area, how the UK numbers compare with other countries.

The whole sorry debacle is beginning to resemble some macabre international lottery competition. As I write this, I have a half an eye on SKY news and, lo and behold, the announcer is giving out more numbers, namely the number of deaths in care homes.

Well of course these particular sums truly are shocking. We are all terribly saddened by the number of elderly patients succumbing to this awful disease.

But why are we so surprised at the high death toll among the most vulnerable in our society?

After all is this not the whole point? It is a proven fact that those who live in care homes are far less likely to survive this

CARE HOMES: Not all are modernised.

awful virus than others who are younger and more healthy.

I have found myself in a quite a few care homes over the years and have been surprised (or not!) that the homes depict-

ed on the media always seem to show highly efficient modern units, all computerised, with pristine environments and facilities, run by highly efficient and articulate staff. ‘The only reason for

the high rate of deaths in these establishments,’ spout many of those desperately striving to gain political points, ‘is the government’s failure to provide enough PPE equipment.’ But it’s not the only reason is it?

Having experienced the heartbreak of two beloved parents, who finally had to be moved to care homes, I can assure you that they are not all as wonderful as the media would like us to believe.

There are thousands of these lucrative private care homes scattered throughout the country, and quite a number that I have experienced are a positive disgrace.

While vainly searching for somewhere to place my dear Dad and later my Mum, I was appalled by the conditions in a whole host of these places.

Many of them stank of urine.

I saw others that were grubby and badly run by completely incompetent staff. Not a few

were run by immigrants, mainly from Pakistan, who, after taking advantage of government schemes to buy large houses, had brought all their relatives over to live in half of the house, while the ‘residents’ lived in the other half and were often tended by some of these relatives who had no qualifications whatsoever.

The speed that this virus could have run rampant through these poorly run establishments doesn’t bear thinking about PPE equipment or not.

No I truly am fed up with the way the media tries to twist the news to suit their political leanings or merely to pick up ratings by the promotion of sensationalism. Ah well. Go safe everyone.

This too will pass.

Why some people reach out and others isolate MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED

W H E N y o u ’ re f e e l i n g d o w n i n the dumps, chances are you’ll respond one of two ways. You might hide away at home not wanting to speak to anyone. Or you may reach out to friends, unloading your worries on to them. Neither approach is wrong!

Whichever way you go, it may be difficult to understand those who act differently than you do when they’re feeling fragile.

Here’s why you might be inclined to reach out or hideaway.

Reaching Out When a thousand worries weigh on your brain, sometimes the only way to relieve pressure is by letting off steam. Perhaps you invite your bestie over for a takeaway, a sad movie, and a long cry.

Or maybe you rant, unloading all of your worries on your mum.

You might even type a long email to a trusted friend, laying bare all your worries.

Talking through your fragile feelings with a trusted friend or loved one works much like talk therapy, discussing your anxieties helps you sort out your true feelings.

But letting off too much steam isn’t healthy, either. If your venting comes out as rage, or you’re thinking obsessively over an idea or choice, your health may be at risk - so make sure your venting remains constructive.

How to help someone who reaches out If your friend is going through a difficult time, offer a shoulder to cry on and an ear to listen. Ignore

the temptation to offer advice now isn’t the time for multitasking with some Candy Crush or Facebook.

But if you suspect their troubles run deeper, encourage them to seek professional help, speak to a doctor.

Hiding away Hiding out under the covers can seem like the only option when you’re feeling sad. Besides, every time you step out into society, it feels like taking a risk. Will you cry in public? Will you say yet another stupid thing that worsens your bad mood?

In certain situations, wallowing is acceptable - give yourself time to heal after something bad happens. There’s no shame in an extended break from the big scary world.

The more you fold in on yourself, the more difficult it becomes to reach out for help from a friend or a therapist.

How to help someone that just wants to h i d e away If you’re worried about a friend who h a s dropped off the face of the planet, tread carefully. Not everyone is receptive to a suggestion that might be dealing with a condition like depression. Waiting for them to reach out may be the best strategy.

B u t i f y o u h a v e n ’ t h e a rd f r o m them in a while, consider sending a message. Let them know you care and want to talk to them.

Don’t push the issue, but leave an opening for further communication. Once they’re ready, they’ll reach out.

Colour coded A BALANCED diet should not only follow the patterns of the nutritional pyramid but also take into account the colours of the foods that each meal includes.

What properties does food have according to its colour?

Reds and purples: Foods such as strawberry, pomegranate and red pepper are a source of vitamin C, magnesium and phytochemicals such as lycopene or anthocyanins. Foods of these colours are beneficial in caring for the heart, urinary tract, and maintaining a good memory.

Green: It is the most common colour. Lettuce, celery, broccoli, green apples and kiwis, provide lutein, a very important antioxidant along with calcium, magnesium, fibre and vitamins K and

To be honest I’m just fed up with it MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man WELL (at the time of writing this) we nearly got out and about except we live in Malaga Province so I’m grumpy about that. To be honest I’m so fed up with it all I’m just going to let them get on with it. I’m sure someone understands it all. The only thing I would say to all governments is stop making this worldwide disaster so partisan.

Stop trying to score points. If something needs to be passed to save lives don’t just block it because it was suggested by the ‘other side.’ America is by far the worst and I think Spain has a few problems. Maybe there should be cross party committees to stop this happening. Just an idea.

During this time of being at home I’ve been making a lot of calls via Facetime, WhatsApp, Skype and Zoom which mostly is fine but it does wind me up if the person I’m talking to is doing something else like walking around the

room at the same time making me feel like I’m on a rocking boat. Or they place the phone in such a way that I spend half the time staring at their forehead or up their nose. If you don’t know how to turn your camera on don’t make a video call at all - voice will do fine thanks.

As far as Zoom is concerned it’s also a good idea to learn how to use it before you disrupt the rest of the group by pressing all the buttons on the bottom of the screen. We use Zoom for a group of us that all have the same Orthostatic Tremor problem. We are all around 70ish so you can imagine the chaos of trying to work out how not to talk over each other. But we are getting there and the fact is this is going to be the way to have meetings for the foreseeable future.

Is anyone else having problems getting to see a doctor? I have had to renew my prescriptions by phone and cannot even get to talk to my diabetic doctor. My neumologist would only talk to me by phone. How can she tell how I am without a physical check-up? The daft thing was she left a prescription in reception so I had to drive to pick it up.

The car park was virtually empty but they still charged me to park there!

As for me, my ‘best restaurants ever’ are never solely defined by the food I ate there. They’re invariably connected to special occasions in my life, to the people I shared them with, and a certain atmosphere which is created by the combination of it all. The time of year, the weather (really important, the weather: it shapes the taste of foods), the place, the food, the company, and the occasion.

It’s strange how very distinctly I remember those memorable eating-out occasions.

Even those which were decades ago, I can still smell and taste.

Maybe at home you’ve managed to recreate dishes that bring back happy travel memories? Or

you recall places you’ve visited that have given you immense pleasure?

I have a few places where I am at my happiest which are out of bounds now. In my mind I take myself on a favourite walk in one of those places.

Of course, looking at photographs is a great way of evoking memories too. But I’d better stop, I’m getting carried away by it all!

Finally, lockdown restrictions are gradually being eased in Europe. In Italy the first businesses to reopen were bars. In Greece, it was churches, hairdressers and bookshops. In Austria, DIY shops and tattoo parlours while in Hong Kong, despite a strict lockdown, restaurants were allowed to keep trading if tables were spaced out.

Germany, however, has different priorities.

The first places back in business there weren’t bars, churches or schools but car deal-

erships that have been selling BMWs, Audis and Mercedes since the middle of April.

But what about the UK? Here the demand for lockdown restrictions to be eased has focused on Britain’s twin obsessions of recycling and gardening: the opening of council tips and garden centres.

Brits may be doomscrolling through their phones and saddened by the latest news reports, but at least they can buy compost again...

WHEN I moved to Marbella last April, I travelled light. Extremely, light. I have been known to require a separate car for my luggage, on many occasions. However, the move to Spain was one I was unsure of, so my full wardrobe didn’t arrive with me.

The idea to make Spain my base, was met with uncertainty over whether it would suit. Meanwhile, life remained busy with social engagements, so I used the stores of Puerto Banus to fill in the gaps. After long deliberations over Marbella being the right place, my wardrobe and other deliveries arrived in December, but had yet to be opened and arranged.

As it rained, I opened the third box, of 11, and out fell old photographs, and press cuttings. I had to make a gin and tonic. Sitting on my hall floor, surrounded by chaos, I was transported back in time.

My mind racing, as I rummaged deeper in the treasure chest. In fairness, the majority of the photos remain a mystery, as my old life was filled with memory loss, rather than memories.

Most were taken at parties, or fashion shows. Funnily, some were of me on the catwalk.

I remember one night being asked to walk in a show, alongside my dear friend, the late, Tara Palmer-Tomkinson. I arrived pretty drunk, following a long lunch, to find that Tara had cheekily missed her flight. Told I would have to walk out solo, I froze. A room packed with guests and media, I felt self-aware. I felt wasted.

Somehow, the team dressed me and sent me out onto a runway that seemed to go on forever. I stood, dressed in Gucci, legs operating like jelly, and stared out into the darkness.

All I could see was the long road ahead. To the sound of Chic, I Want Your love, I strutted, well, more likely stumbled along. Arriving at the end of the catwalk, I posed for photographers for longer than required.

I think I was just relieved to have made it, without falling over. Turning, I bumped straight into the next model, knocking the poor girl off her Fendi heels. Everyone laughed, I died a little, immediately sobered up and we kept going. In life when we mess up, we have to keep going.

What’s the alternative?

CAT WALK: Strutting my stuff.

And that’s what we have to do right now - keep going. Writing this, on day 63 of lockdown, I feel confused. With still so much ‘normality’ to return, when and how, will it happen? Who knows, we simply must wake each day, and continue. While many things feel surreal, still so many people are hoping for a well-earned holiday.

Rather than live in limbo, perhaps it’s time to consider spending our chill time closer to home.

Possibly, because I live in one of Europe’s busiest tourist destinations, I receive many messages from people, asking if Marbella will reopen and be ready for their planned July visit. Will the airports be operating?

Listen, I have absolutely no idea. All I will say, is if this is something that’s seriously troubling you, perhaps consider a new plan. In the same way that I may not be able to travel to Italy, France or Ireland, you may not be able to come here.

So, I am looking at the option to spend the summer between Marbella and Ibiza. My family spent a lot of time on Isla Blanca in the late 70’s, and this year I imagine it will be a similar vibe.

A chilled, relaxed island, rather than a hedonistic party paradise. For me, the updates regarding air travel and border openings feel a little confusing and unsure, so why waste time living in hope?

Look at options that are achievable and book them. As I began to open box number four, I realised, that real memories, even when most are a blur, are the best thing we have.

This is a good time to sit, think, laugh, and at the end of the day, be grateful. As we’ll be free to make new memories soon.

Other People’s Opinions Are None of Your Business were moving to Spain. We weren’t financially secure, we had two young children and nine suitcases with no guarantee of work!

Some supported our decisions, others didn’t! We were told we were crazy, we were told we would be back within a year, we were told it wouldn’t work.

These were people’s opinions. Their opinions were generated from their own fear. If we had listened to those opinions, there is a strong case that we would still to this day, be plodding along and existing.

Our children would never have experienced a different culture and lear ned a new language at such a young age. We knew these people cared for us, but we knew what WE wanted to do. We

respected their opinion, thanked them for their input, blessed and released any form of negativity and continued with our plan. That plan has been the making of our family’s lives!

People will have an opinion, no matter what you say or do.

Today is the day that you tell yourself; Other people’s opinions are none of my business. I will live my life, my way with my choices. I will fear the fear and do it anyway.

The 12 Steps to Not Looking Like a Fashion Victim SUZANNE MANNERS IT has been nearly three months since lockdown began and I am a little ‘mad woman in the attic’ crazy stuck in my flat. Yesterday, for example I got up at 7am, had a s h o w e r, t h r e w a m u g o f Ristretto down my neck and was about to step outside (OUTSIDE!!!!!) to go to the bins when I realised I was still buck naked except for my favourite Reindeer deely bopper headband and a pair of fluffy monster slippers.

Mortified I quickly shut the door and proceeded to make myself respectable. An hour later I emerged from my cave fully clothed, hair brushed and eyelashes mascaraed and hobbled downstairs and out into the rain. The masked pitying glances slung carelessly my way had more to do with the lime green stilettos strapped to my feet jockeying for position with the camouflage combat trousers that had

seen better days (even when new).

I also don’t think the bright pink Deerstalker hat impressed the neighbours, or the bin men.

Now in ter ms of fashion sense it may seem quite obvious that I have none. Admittedly I did over exaggerate the above story just a tad (Ok the whole thing!) but aside from not being caught dead wearing stilettos of any hue (the combats and the Deerstalker are still on the table... metaphorically speaking) my sense of what looks good or even appropriate on my not so young anymore and frankly unwieldy body disappeared into the eighth circle of hell many moons ago. Half my wardrobe consists of clothes still gaily sporting shop tags like the dance cards of spinsters of the parish. They hang forlor nly at the back (the clothes not the spinsters I am crazy, but not psychotic) waiting for their final journey to the clothes recycling bin.

There are some very sprightly looking Syrian refugees sporting an array of loudly patterned, flouncy off the shoulder blouses.

So anyway 12 steps; more or less.

• Don’t buy it!

• You’re not 21 any more and you would never have worn a Tutu on top of Tartan Mohair leggings even then.

• At 21 you had youth and slenderness. Now you have neither.

• Don’t buy it!

• Blue and green should never be seen with nothing in between is absolutely correct... a blue hat and green flip flops and nothing in between is apparently not acceptable beachwear.

• You are not 21... I repeat you are NOT 21.

• 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. Don’t buy it!

So there you have it. However in ter ms of fashion sense who made fashionistas the McQueens who decide what looks good or not and have you actually seen the state of the clothes in a real fashion show?

I’m all for self expression through outerwear so why not doff those blues and greens with pride and if you fancy a post lockdown trip to the local tavern wearing a beatific smile and not much else... go for it... just be prepared to run.

FASHION SENSE: Obvious I have none.

YEAH, I know that might sound rich coming from me as I’ve recently written about my Autism and some of my mental health issues attached to it. But I’d like to say that I’ve always thought logically and rationally!

Quite frankly, I’m gobsmacked at how many friends and local people are now falling for the Covid Conspiracies! There seemed to be a spike in them after the State of Alarm was extended.

People I thought of as intelligent and level-headed are acting completely out of character and now coming out with the most ridiculous theories. These seem to be based on nothing more than information from conspiracy videos, copy and pasted on social media and memes.

Anti-science is the new black! I roll my eyes when I hear people ask, “these so-

I understand people are getting frustrated. Bills are mounting up. Boredom and loneliness too. It’s a strenuous time for us all. But what I fail to go along with is the belief that the government here are lying to us and purposely trying to bring the country to its knees. There is absolutely no logic in that whatsoever!

Why would any government purposely implement policies that would destroy the economy and ruin their reputation?

It’s detrimental for them at the next election. There is no logic in it!

Another crazy theory I heard was that it’s all a plot to vaccinate us with microchips for mind control to facilitate New World Order. Seriously! Well, if conspiracies were true - they could have just left the planes in the sky to carry on spraying

I suppose I shouldn’t mock really; mental health is bound to suffer in confinement.

Yes, it’s an awful situation, with no real winners at the end.

But there is no ideal solution to solve it either. Even if people don’t like or trust this govern-

ment, the virus is real.

There is no valid reason why the WHO, all the other worldwide governments, doctors, scientists, care workers etc would all tell the same unanimous lie to us! The world has never agreed on anything! Unless we’re getting back that

New World Order theory - the belief that the Illuminate and lizards in the moon are controlling everything (yes, some people do believe that!). My brain hurts just thinking about what people believe!

It is an awful situation and the hardships we face will be enormous. But let’s not lose touch with reality. Just weeks ago, the same people that had ‘Stay Home’ badges on their Facebook profiles and were proudly clapping at 8pm every night are now saying it’s all a scam.

Some are even banging pans and shouting in anger, instead!

Nothing has changed in those few weeks, only that the numbers of infections and deaths were coming down. We must have been on the right path for that to happen, can we get back on it, please?

Deep breaths and think rationally. Maybe try some meditation.

It’ll be impossible to rebuild the economy if we’re all in the looney bin!

DAVID WORBOYS FOR more than 60 years, television has invaded our homes and influenced our thoughts, for better or worse. It provides information and education, and there are documentaries investigating important issues and concerns. It also provides all forms of entertainment as well as company for millions of lonely viewers. The benefits have been enormous.

There are, however many complaints about declining standards. In the early days of television, BBC2 showed relatively ‘highbrow’ programmes whereas ITV went for the more trivial.

Nowadays most channels are dominated by less inspired offerings. Most UK soap operas cover the lives of losers (unlike ‘Dallas’ and ‘Dynasty’). Some (not all) travel documentaries are

Far too many programmes are repeats and there is a surfeit of house-hunters and chefs. Even more unfortunate is the juvenile behaviour of participants in many reality shows and panel games. How did Sue Barker ever get involved with those on ‘A Question of Sport?’

Mary Whitehouse, a campaigner against the permissive society, used to monitor the BBC’s attempts to boost its viewing by an increasing use of sex, violence and foul language.

A number of programmes were banned, but many were aired which would not be allowed today. Current obsession with political correctness means that anything considered offensive to any particular group will not be aired. Comedians

TV ENTERTAINMENT: No longer how it used to be. are not allowed to be as funny any longer, and this is reflected in the lack of great comedians (Les Dawson and Jasper Carrott), sketches (‘Monty Python’ and ‘Pete and Dud’) and situation comedy (‘Fawlty Towers’).

In the period from Richard Dimbleby to David Frost there was respect for the interviewee and a questioning technique that allowed dia-

logue. Channel 4 News covers a range of interesting topics but it tries to cram far too much into the 60 minutes. The programme is ruined by the attitude of its presenters who have no social graces and no respect for their guests or even for their own reporters. They are in a rush to get through.

Because they are looking at the clock, the presenters

are not listening properly to what their guests have to say. During interviews, the presenters are more interested in hearing their own voices than having a balanced dialogue. The result is a constant stream of interruptions.

And in the middle of an important point they cut the person dead. “T ime’s run out.” “We have to leave it there” or “Thank you. Over to you, Jon.” But it’s not only Channel 4.

More recently, there has been a plethora of hostile egoists on BBC who seem to take pride in being ill-mannered and even hostile, ranging from Jeremy Paxman to Andrew Neil.

Finally, we have the pack hounding politicians in the street. “Are you going to resign, Mr Corbyn?” “Have you lost your seat Ms Swinson?”

Maybe television reflects the direction of society in general. I hope not.

FREEDOM FIGHTER DEAR Euro Weekly News, Please don’t take away my one hour in the evening for exercise!

I am in remission from lung cancer, and very vulnerable, and the 7-8pm hour to take a walk safely and get some fresh air is a saviour for me, after nearly eight weeks of not leaving the house at all, I do enjoy my evening walk, knowing there will not be 100s of people out walking and putting my health at risk!

At 8pm when I make my way home there are literally 100s of people and lunatics racing past on bikes, and not adhering to social distancing rules, and it would be very unsafe for me to walk amongst all these people.

I may be over 70, but one hour in the evening to walk is not too much to ask, surely?

I am over 70, but just as important as every other member of society! And I wait all day for 7pm to come, so I can go out for some fresh air.

PLEASE DO NOT TAKE AWAY THE LITTLE BIT OF FREEDOM YOU HAVE GIVEN ME!!!!!!

Italians, who constitute a sizeable community in the UK, are heartbroken that the British people are suffering the same fate as their home country. Some have taken to social media to chastise the ‘reluctance’ and ‘naivety’ of the PM when it came to containing the pandemic, despite having watched the Covid-19 hell unfold in Italy.

When a lockdown was eventually enforced in the UK, many Italians couldn’t understand why people in Britain were allowed to jog, go for a walk or simply leave home without showing papers to the police. When Britain recently became the country with the worst coronavirus death toll in Europe, many Italians grieved in shock. To others, it was only to be expected given the UK’s relaxed lockdown.

Italians are now leaving the UK in droves to go back to their home country, according to the Italian embassy in London. The initially soft Covid-19 approach of the UK government generated a great deal of fear among Italians, and they decided it made more sense to leave. Just like the Brits, Italians are enormously proud of their healthcare system, which, not surprisingly, was mentioned by Johnson as an example of an excellent healthcare system unable to cope with the waves of victims from the pandemic.

Of course, every country has made its own mistakes against this invisible enemy. Italy made huge ones. Yet many in Italy are still wondering why the UK didn’t act immediately against the virus after the immense suffering in southern Europe. This has now generated a sort of general scepticism and distrust toward the British authorities among Italian citizens.

It is my feeling that Bill Gates knows that this pandemic was just a trial run to see who obeys the lockdown and who didn’t. How long people stayed in their homes before they rebelled. What ages were involved and what types of people? How effective was their control of the media and use of AI to remove videos that were against the status quo?

The next pandemic will probably be very soon as they will not want the countries affected to recover economically.

It will probably be a mutated version of CV and they will seed it in areas where it will spread the fastest and kill the most people. This time what the virus does not kill, food shortages will.

The fact that Bill Gates is already warning us as he did the last time that another pandemic is on the cards it will happen because he will make sure it does. This psychopath takes pleasure in his power to create fear and panic on a greater level than Stalin, Mao and Hitler especially as he will be responsible for its release.

But this time the vaccine will magically appear and will be ready with some form of microchip or identity system ready to inject the world population for the coming One World Government. The One World leader the Biblical antichrist.

Washington officials were “furious” to learn UK police had put an international wanted notice out for Anne Sacoolas, the American woman charged over 19-year-old Harry’s death last year, the Mail on Sunday reports.

car outside a US military base in Northamptonshire on August 27

last year. Anne Sacoolas, 42, the wife of a US intelligence official based at RAF Croughton, claimed diplomatic immunity after the crash and was able to return to her home country.

She was charged with causing death by dangerous driving in December, but an extradition request submitted by the Home Office was rejected by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in January, a decision the State Department has since described as “final.”
