READY TO OPEN?: Store floors marked for social distancing. DESPITE Spain’s slow but steady progress in deescalating out of the coronavirus health crisis, there is still a lot of confusion felt by residents in confinement about what rules apply, where they apply and to whom they apply. Thankfully measures are beginning to relax however, finding out which measures apply in which stage has been a headache for many. Firstly, the government said it would only de-escalate by provinces, and this has been the case in Andalucia, however, in other areas of the nation provinces have been allowed to de-escalate by sanitary districts. Why has the entirety of Malaga, which only has one sanitary district that does not comply with Phase 1 criteria, been forced to remain in Phase 0? Instead, territories in Valencia and Alicante with a higher inci-

dence of the virus have been allowed to de-escalate separately. Not only this, but the constant backtracking on rules and regulations has also proven confusing, to say the least. Initially, the new driving regulations were only applicable to residents in Phase 1, now they apply to Phase 0 as well. At one point, bars and restaurants were only allowed to open their terraces to accommodate 30 per cent of usual customers, after facing backlash they changed this to 50 per cent. Similarly, going to a residence in the same province was only allowed in Phase 2, after facing controversy this has been amended to Phase 1. It begs the question, how are these regulations being created and enforced? How much backlash must a regulation face before being adapted?

What is the final say? These are important questions that business owners and customers must know the answers to if they plan on contributing to the economy and re-activating the notion of ‘new normality.’

Clearing Up Confusion TO make things a little simpler during this complicated time, we have developed an easy to read guide about what you can and can’t do during your deescalation phase: Can I travel to go and see my family or friends? No, if you are in Phase 0 you are not allowed to visit friends or family at their homes. Yes, if you are in Phase 1, you are permitted to hold small social gatherings of up to 10 people, but this must be within the same province. You are not allowed to travel outside of your province to visit anyone. Can I go to the bar/restaurant? No, if you are in Phase 0, bars and restaurants will remain closed to the public, however, you can go and pick up food to take away and eat at home. Yes, if you are in Phase 1, then bars and restaurants with open terraces will be open but at a limited capacity and correct hygiene measures should be abided to. Can I go to the hairdressers? Yes, no matter what phase you are in, businesses which take prior appointments will be open, all you need to do is book in advance.

EXERCISE: Is permitted in bothphases but at regulated times. Can I go to church or my place of worship? No if you are in Phase 0 this will be

closed. Yes, if you are in Phase 1. Can I travel in the car with my family?

Individuals in both Phase 0 and Phase 1 are now allowed to travel with members of their household in the same private vehicle, without using masks and occupying all seats available. However, if you are travelling with a non-household member you must wear a face mask and respect the maximum distance between passengers. Can I go out to do exercise? Yes, in both phases exercise is allowed, however, you must abide to your designated time slot. Children under the age of 14 (accompanied by an adult): From 12.00pm to 7.00pm Individuals over the age of 70: From 10.00am to 12.00pm and from 7.00pm to 8.00pm Individuals over 14 but under 70: From 6.00am to 10.00am and from 8.00pm to 11.00pm Can I take my children out? Yes, in both phases, either to accompany you to do activities permissible under your phase or during the designated exercise hours. When taking your child out for exercise this must be done by a single parent and only a maximum of three children can go out under the supervision of one parent.

Raising a glass to freedom down, comments posted on online forums suggest a good number of residents see the changes under Phase one as a positive advance and are keen to show support for local businesses. UK expats in Mallorca have raised a glass to the first day of the relaxation of lockdown restrictions in the Balearics. “Fifty-nine days and back in the last bar we entered in Santa Ponsa, The Sunset Bar. Cheers everyone!” said a clearly happy Joanne and Annis Abraham, who have lived on the island for four years. “We hope the UK follows Mallorca and is able to open its bars soon,” the couple added.

MALLORCA is enjoying extra freedom after the island, along with Ibiza and Menorca, entered Phase one of the lockdown de-escalation on Monday, allowing bars, restaurants, cafes, hotels and other small businesses to start the move towards a ‘new normality.’ The easing of confinement regulations and restrictions on movement allow visits to family and friends, shopping without an appointment, driving within the province and enjoying a drink or a bite to eat on bar, restaurant and cafe terraces. There are still limitations. Social distancing is very much an obligation, strict health measures have to be followed and not all businesses and establishments which could open have done so, not least because of imposed maximums on customer capacity. But after nearly two months of lock-

GROWING INTEREST: Lufthansa said people have a longing to fly again. THE Lufhansa group of airlines has announced it will restart flights to more destinations in Germany and European destinations including Mallorca in June. Lufthansa, Eurowings and Swiss are set to put 80 aircraft back into service, doubling the number they have been operating under the air transport restrictions. In all the companies will be offering services to 106 destinations, which will also include the Greek island of Crete, from the beginning of next month. The group said the decision was in response to a growing interest

among customers for flights in view of the gradual easing of restrictions and limitations on travel in the German federal states and on entry requirements in other European countries. “We perceive a great desire and longing among people to fly again,” commented Lufthansa Executive Board member Harry Hohmeister. “The hotels and restaurants are slowly opening, and visits to friends and family are being allowed in some countries,” he pointed out. The Lufthansa group said it will be issuing more details on flight times this week.

Terraces extended BAR, cafe and restaurant terraces are being extended into parking spaces in Palma. The city council has approved the temporary occupation of parking areas for as long as social distancing recommendations remain in place and there are limitations on capacity. Palma mayor Jose Hila said the measure would be modified if State regulations change. This will be at no cost and can be requested by all bars, restaurants and cafes with the pertinent activity licence and which have parking spaces in front of their establishments, independently of whether they have a licence for occupying a public space. Police raid on Gambling Den A GROUP of gamblers have been arrested in a Chinese restaurant in Pere Garau. National Police officers raided the premises, and detained six people for breaking the State of Alarm isolation rules as well as partaking in illegal gambling. Surveillance operations from the National Police noted that people were exiting the building without any food, which led credibility to suggestions that illegal activities were taking place. The restaurant had previously been prosecuted over gambling, and so officers entered the premises, and discovered the clandestine gamblers as well as betting chips, cards, and around €3,000 in cash.

Michael Douglas halts sale of Island home HOLLYWOOD star Michael Douglas has halted the sale of his luxury home in Mallorca. The American actor and producer has reportedly taken the spectacular S’Estaca estate located between Deia and Valldemossa off the market, six years after he and his ex-wife Diandra

Lucker put it up for sale. The film star has decided to keep the property, and will take it in turns with his ex to spend time there. Douglas and Lucker first acquired the S’Estaca estate in the early 90’s for €4 million. When the couple split up 11 years’ later they agreed to share,

Lockdown confinement and gender violence SINCE the coronavirus crisis lockdown has kept people confined to their homes, the Balearic Islands has seen an increase in the number of calls to its 24-hour gender-based violence helpline. The regional Presidency, Culture and Equality minister Pilar Costa reported that the IbDona Balearic Women’s Institute service registered 569 calls between March 15 and May 5.

INCREASE: There were 21 per cent more calls to the 24hour gender violence helpline in the first two weeks of April than in the first fortnight of March.

This represented a 5 per cent rise on the same period last year. The institute also received 45 WhatsApp messages, 15 per cent up on 2019. Costa said there had been 21 per cent more calls over the first fortnight of April than in the first half of March, which were the two weeks before the State of Alarm restrictions on going out came into force.

International tourism crash THE Balearic Islands have suffered the biggest collapse in international tourism due to the coronavirus crisis of any region in Spain. Figures from the National Institute of Statistics reveal the islands received 68.3 per cent less foreign visitors in March than in the same month last year after borders closed. The amount spent by tourists plummeted by a similar amount, with a drop of just un-

der 70 per cent to around €107 million. The accumulated total for international tourism in the region in the first quarter of the year stands at 405,470, 41.4 per cent down on the same three months of 2019. Nearly 60 per cent of foreign visitors were from Germany and 11.5 per cent from the UK. Total foreign visitor spending on the islands for the quarter was €389 million, 41 per cent less than last year.

More Waves Coming SPAIN’S army is predicting two more waves of coronavirus outbreaks in the country. Their report said that it would take between 12 and 18 months for Spain to return to “normality.” The timings would also depend on when a vaccine is developed and administered. Army experts have produced some sombre reading for politicians and the country’s population. “There will be a second wave of Covid-19 in the autumn or winter,”

the report said. “It will be less serious than the initial outbreak due to higher immunity in the population and better preparations.” Their analysis also said that a third wave could happen next year, but the effects would lessen still further, especially if a vaccine was available. The army has played a big part in fighting the coronavirus since the State of Alarm was introduced during mid-March.

IN the small print of the Official State Bulletin order approved this Saturday, May 9, the government has included a prohibition regarding sales at physical shops, which will affect the more relaxed opening of shops in Phase 1. However, this measure will only affect physical stores as it aims to avoid crowds and an over-saturation of people. “This restriction will not affect sales or sale promotions made through the websites” states the order. Neither employers nor large operators understand the meaning of the measure, which they describe as ‘incongruous.’ This measure was established to give an opportunity to smaller businesses to compete with larger ones, but the fact that there will still be online sales means there will be a clear imbalance between the large textile companies, who have a digital media presence and platforms for this kind of sales versus the SMEs and autonomous workers who do not.

ARMY EXPERTS: Predict more outbreaks in future. Thousands of soldiers and military doctors have worked across medical facilities and key transport centres. The report also suggests that “it would be extremely important” to develop a contact tracing method using mobile phone apps.

Traveller Quarantine TRAVEL agencies, tour operators, and transport companies are now obligated to inform potential holidaymakers and travellers about the new quarantine measures when selling tickets destined towards any Spanish territories. “People coming from abroad must quarantine for 14 days following their arrival,” stated the Official State Bulletin on Tuesday, May 12. This order established by the Ministry of Health, which comes into force at 12.00am on May 15, aims to enforce a quarantine for people arriving in Spain from abroad, at least until the State of Alarm lasts.

It establishes that any person who travels to Spain from abroad, regardless if they are Spanish or foreign, must be quarantined for two weeks either ‘at home or accommodation, and must limit their movements’ to certain activities such as ‘acquisition of food, pharmaceuticals, access to health centres or due to force majeure.’ The transborder workers, transporters and crews are exempt from this standard, ‘provided they have not been in contact with people diagnosed with Covid-19.’ Airlines must also provide a Passenger Location Card for passengers

to fill in upon arrival in case they must be located once they have entered Spain.

High-End Thieves THE National Police have arrested a gang of safecrackers suspected of stealing a gold bar and high-end jewellery during a lockdown crime spree. According to the police, the seven ‘highly professional’ suspects specialised in overriding security systems using ‘frequency inhibitors and oxyfuel torches’ to open safes. They have been charged with seven burglaries in Zamora and Madrid. The gang, all from Madrid targeted a jewellers, a DIY store and five companies before and during the State of Alarm lockdown. After sabotaging alarms they managed to steal €155,000, a gold bar and jewellery.

Killer Hornets A 54-YEAR-OLD man lost his life on Sunday (May 10) in Santiago - in northwest Spain’s Galicia region, as a result of the sting of a giant Asian hornet, after discovering there was a nest next to the hives that he looked after which were located very close to his home. Paramedics were quick to respond to the scene in Villestro but sadly the man was dead when they got there, the man’s friend, a fellow beekeeper, had called the emergency services when he found his friend on the floor close to a hive. Reportedly, the insect had stung the man on the eyebrow which proved fatal; the deadly creature then flew off leaving the victim dead.

SAFE READ: The EWN. THE Health Delegation of the Andalucian Government has stated that putting newspapers in stands both inside a premise or even on the street is perfectly acceptable. The Health Delegation highlighted a statement from the World Health Organisation, which says: “the risk of transmission of the Covid-19 by printed paper is ‘infinitely insignificant,’ so picking up a newspaper to read or leaf through it by one or more people, whether at home or in a public establishment, is safe and is not a cause of contagion.” Likewise, the Spanish Information Media Association issued a statement stating: “The transmission of Covid-19 through newsprint and its shared use has never been founded.”

Boost to domestic tourism WITH the prospect of a holiday season of closed borders, restricting overseas travel and threats of quarantines, Spain’s travel agencies have stressed the importance of catering to local tourism. The Corporate Association of Specialised Travel Agencies (Acave), the main employer in the sector in Spain with more than 500 associated agencies, has urged the government to boost the promotion of domestic tourism “in order to save some of the summer season and the period after that until the end of the year.” They argue priority must be given to local tourist packages, organised through its agencies to adhere to strict government health regulations. The fight for European aid will be important, Acave told El Periodico, as well as the amount to be distributed. The issue of opening of borders is being discussed this week at European level. In 2013, an Argentinian court issued an international arrest warrant on 13 counts of torture as part of an investigation into Franco-era crimes that included disappearances, forced labour, murders, stolen children, and unlawful detention. That bid failed a year later; the High Court in Madrid rejected an extradition request, saying that any crimes that had been committed had passed. Two week review

TWO weeks of two halves for sterling with a peppering of upbeat stories in contrast to dismal UK economic data. PM Boris Johnson returned to work with investors hoping he would provide more leadership. After the birth of his son mid-week, he was back at the lectern to deliver the news that the rate of infection, R0, for Covid-19 had fallen below the level of one, meaning the pandemic has passed its peak in Britain. He reviewed the lockdown with his cabinet on the 7th, and was to address the nation three days later, and has already said some rules could be eased from May 11th. There was one piece of news the pound was hanging on for before the early spring bank holiday, and the Bank of England didn’t fail to deliver. Despite the BoE war ning Covid-19 will push the UK economy into recession, sterling rose against the euro and US dollar as it opted to keep interest rates and its quantitative easing programme unchanged.

The BoE said the economy was on course to shrink 14% in 2020 if the lockdown was relaxed in June, and jobs and incomes would be dramatically reduced. While two members voted to change the policy, it’s given sterling a bit of breathing space in a difficult week. Flunking in last position, it lost an average of 1.4% to the other majors in the curtailed six-day week, securing last place. Overall the economic picture looks bleak, and while not all UK data were bad, the good ones were few and far between. The CBI’s Distributive Trades Survey noted a historic slide in retail sales in a survey conducted between late-March to mid-April. Crucially, 96% of retailers, nearly all, reported cash flow difficulties. Nationwide’s house price index edged up to a 3.7% annual increase, the strongest since February 2017, but lending data from the BoE showed a sharper than expected slowdown in mortgage approvals: 56k in March down from 74k in Feb-

ruary, and UK manufacturers reported output, orders and employment falling at record rates in April. The purchasing managers’ indices varied between poor (32.6 for manufacturing), and dire (8.2 for construction). The services PMI was stronger than forecast with a still lowly 13.4. The 32.6% jump in alcohol sales was of little consolation. Weak economic data also haunted Europe, with most of the economic data from the Eurozone at least as bad as the UK numbers. While the euro did better than sterling, it was only by two-thirds of a cent, taking the penultimate slot against the other major currencies. The composite readings put Germany in first place with 17.4 and Spain came last at 9.2. All were series lows. Other pockets of misery were to be found in German factory orders, down by a monthly 15.6%, and Euroland retail sales which fell 11.2%. The European Commission’s latest economic forecast was pre-

The French services sector scoring 10.4 in the provisional purchasing managers’ index measures for April. Two months ago the February reading was 52.5. French GDP fell 5.8% in the first quarter and Euroland as a whole contracted by 3.8%. Italian GDP shrank by 4.7% in Q1, a development which might have been a factor in the decision of Fitch to downgrade the country’s credit rating to BBB-, one level above ‘junk.’

Terrorist Takedown Arenas Closed WITH arenas closed all over Spain the bullfighting industry can no longer support the upkeep of the bulls and most will have to go to slaughterhouses. For months, ranchers had laid the groundwork; grazing and exercising a select crop of half-tonne fighting bulls to be transported to arenas and festivals across the country. Then - just as the season was set to kick off - the country was plunged into lockdown. It brought the bullfighting sector to

a standstill. Long reviled by animal rights campaigners who see it as cruel and outdated, bullfighting’s fight for survival has triggered a fierce debate over its future in Spanish society. Traditionally an emblematic part of Spanish culture, it has struggled for survival in recent decades The industry also supports thousands of jobs, from the matadors and their teams to ranch-hands and bullring staff. They are also under threat now.

TERRORIST: Influenced by Daesh.

OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil in Barcelona have arrested a Moroccan citizen for his association to the terrorist group Daesh. The investigation was coordinated with the help of Moroccan DGST and the FBI. The detainee had been showing clear signs of radicalisation and affinity with the terrorist group Daesh for four years now. His radicalisation was discreetly carried out both in a physical and virtual sense and he had never been identified as a critical actor. However, during the State of Alarm this radicalisation grew more prominent causing authorities to become alarmed.

Police hypothesise that this intensification happened as Daesh made a call to all solitary actors who found themselves in western territories telling them to mobilise and carry out attacks. Virtually, the detainee was publicly manifesting his hate for the West on social media and, physically, he was seen breaking quarantine and possibly scouting areas to attack. The investigation determined that he was completely influenced by their propaganda and had sworn his loyalty to Daesh, subsequently causing his arrest as he posed a threat to the general public.

Airport charges LOW COST carrier Ryanair has demanded that Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, scraps airport charges in Spain. The Irish company has also said that they “want to resume flights as soon as possible,” once travel restrictions have been lifted. Ryanair is annoyed that they have to pay parking

fees for their stranded planes across the Spanish airport network operated by state-owner Aena. Ryanair’s argument is that their planes cannot go anywhere else, and though Aena has given them a six-month interest free delay on paying the fees, the company says the charge doesn’t

make any sense. Ryanair’s Eddie Wilson said: “It’s unjustified as our aircraft are immobilised and parked at airports due to the Spanish government’s travel restrictions.” Wilson added that he fully supported the Madrid government’s measures to fight the coronavirus, but said that Aena-operated airports “should not be allowed to make any benefit out of the crisis at the expense of airlines that are in a difficult situation due to travel restrictions.” He also pointed out that most EU airports had waived fees, and added that if Aena didn’t then it “would be up to Pedro Sanchez and the government to do so.”

The President of the Andalucian Government, Juan Manuel Moreno, has warned the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, of the “reputational damage” that the decision to leave the province of Malaga out of Phase 1 of the de-escalation causes the brand of the Costa del Sol. It should be noted that tourism represents 12 per cent of the economy in Andalucia and 13 per cent of employment. Bitcoin devaluation EVERY four years the value of crypto currency bitcoin is halved in a deliberate effort to slow down the number of coins ‘mined.’ At the onset of the coronavirus Covid­19 pandemic the value of a single bitcoin dropped to $4,200 (€3,876) but now a few days be­ fore the devaluation, it has jumped back to just below $10,000 (€9,232). A constant during the crisis Golden Leaves l a n o i t a n r e t n I is here to help THE coronavirus pandemic has effectively knocked the world off its axis and changed almost ever y facet of our daily lives, confining nations t o t he i r h o m es , an d bringing with it an unprecedented fear of the unknown. Even the process of grieving has changed as peop l e a r e f o rc e d t o mour n the death of a loved one in isolation. Throughout these uncertain times, Golden Leaves International has remained consistent throughout the expat community, supporting various charities and causes as people find their way through anxious and frightening times. EWN spoke to International Operations Director, Emma Quantrill, at the firm’s head office in Javea. She said: “We have been and are here throughout this health crisis, it’s important for Golden Leaves that expats know this even if people don’t have a Funeral Plan with us. “It’s a difficult time for people but we are specialists in this field, and if people just need to talk, please contact us we are here to listen and help.” Emma commented “We’ve been video calling as we have found it is far more reassuring and comforting for the community to see our faces. In addition, most of the calls we have been receiving are from clients wonderi n g

We d o u n d e r stand why people are ringing to make sure as it’s a worrying time and people are more anxious. “Our advice, as always, is if someone loses a friend or loved one, ring us first. As long as you have a plan with us, we will take care of everything and if not, we can give you advice and point you in the right direction.” She added: “These are unprecedented times; it can be difficult to reach out to people who are grieving because there are different stages to grief. It’s just important to let them know they are not alone.” Emma has seen a lot of change in attitudes towards death over the years, and even more so now, in the midst of the pandemic. “Death is on people’s minds now, it’s not as taboo a subject as it once was, and people are more open to talking about and planning ahead for it. “It’s important to put an End of Life plan in place, not just because of the pandemic, but also because of Brexit. “We have found that with Brexit and now the pandemic, people are understandably worried as many longstanding companies have gone into administration. I can assure everyone that we have an independent Trust Fund in place to safeguard your plan purchase against this situation occurring.”

PERSONAL IMPACT HEALTH INSURANCE Specialist, Victoria, is also hands on throughout the crisis, advising and reassuring clients and others who need assistance. While she and the rest of the team have maintained a presence throughout the State of Alarm, she says how it has affected her personally. “My life has changed a lot due to lockdown,” said Victoria. “I have a five-year-old son, He’s at home with my husband. “It’s been hard not being able to go out with my boy. It was his birthday last month and he obviously wanted to see his friends. “He has been fantastic and very understanding of this overwhelming situation. His

school did an amazing job and explained everything before it closed, and we reinforced the message at home too. In truth it’s hard for him to understand in full because he can’t physically see it.” But Emma says she feels lucky and privileged. “The confinement side of lockdown has not really had much of an impact on me. I am fortunate to be able to adapt to a situation and changes in circumstance. “We are all now in a new world and we are all doing our jobs differently and to the best of our ability. “My team and I are concentrating on helping other people who are in a much less fortunate position.”

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I CANNOT personally join in the condemnation and leftie gloating over the British government’s handling of the PPE dilemma. With the growing pressure and need for more and more supplies it is plainly obvious that ministers have been searching far and wide for ways of obtaining these lifesaving pieces of equipment. After all, who would have thought that Turkey of all places would have some means of producing vast amounts of these vital medical items? A number of other countries in the world, seeing a chance of a quick profit, have turned their hand to manufacturing these supplies, is it no wonder that much of it is inferior or not fit for purpose? The most despicable country of all of course is China. With its vast manufacturing ‘robot’ manufacturing capabilities the Chinese are pouring all their efforts into churning out as much

MEDICAL SUPPLIES: Many countries are now manufacturing these. PPE and breathing equipment as possible. Millions of tons are being manufactured from their factories, many of which are springing up virtually overnight. They are hawking their products around the world and, according to reports, ‘customers’ are being given 15 minutes to make decisions on millions of

pounds worth of goods or else it gets offered to someone else! This is a disgraceful state of affairs. It’s almost a take it or leave it scenario. And what about the moral issues? The country responsible for the whole debacle is making billions from the victims of their actions. That’s like demolishing

someone’s house without their permission and charging the owners for rebuilding. What they should be doing is donating all their products free of charge. At least this would go some way to making amends for this scourge of death and misery they have released on the world. Well don’t hold your breath for that scenario; they’re too busy making sure they’re all fir mly on board before the world’s economy ‘gangplank’ plunges into the water. Five weeks ago I wrote that the ethnic areas of the UK cities weren’t taking a blind bit of notice of the gover nment’s advice for social distancing or staying indoors. Mosques were still open and some Imams were telling their followers the virus was ‘not their problem’ and was ‘Allah’s revenge on the Infidel.’ I said at the time that when they began to drop like flies, it

would be a whole different story. Well it’s happened hasn’t it? It is now being reported that those from ethnic communities have up to four times the chance of dying from the virus than their white counterparts. They actually are trying to insinuate that this disease has some kind of racist connotations! What a load of old codswallop. The only reason there are more people dying from the ethnic communities is because the majority consider themselves totally alien from the rules and regulations that govern the country they live in. End of. I do not of course include those from these communities working in the front lines. These are the givers. Unfortunately they are a very small percentage of their compatriots. UP until a month ago, we had become completely accustomed to full, constantly topped up supermarket shelves. We could get whatever we wanted, whenever we wanted it. But did we ever actually stop to consider what it took to produce food or where the constant flow came from? Food had become a commodity we no longer had to fight for, it was readily available. However, when the Coronavirus pandemic slapped the world in the face it put certain things, like the need for food, into perspective. Faced with stripped supermarket shelves, closed bakeries, coffee shops and restaurants, reality bit. Some of those in isolation were robbed of their packaged sandwich breakfast, ready meals from supermarkets and easy alternatives from the kebab shop and had to try something new, cooking from scratch, getting inventive and fending for themselves. In doing so nine out of 10 adults report that they are more aware of how much food they are wasting, and over a third of consumers are throwing out less than before the crisis struck. We are learning to value food as well as learning to value our own abilities to handle change and survive. However, we cannot allow ourselves to become complacent. When we return to normality we must carry over this new respect for food and ultimately our new respect for survival.

DEAR Euro Weekly News, The hours given to different age groups of the community is just not working. On the first day that children with a parent were allowed out it seemed like every child was out enjoying themselves, a week on, they have six hours to exercise, where have they all gone, our promenade is now deserted between the hours of 12 and 6, however b e t w e e n 6 a m a n d 1 0 a m t h e s a m e a re a s a re crowded, not only with the designated age group but also some children and very many over 70’s who obviously can’t wait until 10 am to take their exercise. Think twice Dear Euro Weekly, I booked a flight with Ryanair from Alicante to London Gatwick in March. I also booked a hotel and airport parking. I took out Ryanair insurance. The week before I was due to travel I started coughing and felt unwell. On the advice of the Spanish medical contact service, I was advised not to travel, I didn’t. I managed to cancel my hotel and airport parking without any financial loss. I contacted Ryanair insurance provider to advise them, again bef o re m y t r a v e l . N o re s p o n s e t o d a t e . I h a v e emailed them on another two occasions since. Again, no reply. Ryanair is a money-making organisation who think nothing for their customers. The flights were £124.39. Not a great sum but now, as a regular on Ryanair in the past, I would have to think twice about using them again. Regards, Trevor

The hospitals have coped brilliantly, and Elche as a whole has many less cases than other cities... the problem is authorities worry about a spike, meaning that these two hospitals will be overrun... so strangely to many, and as a precaution they have not let Elche or surrounding towns pass. Rightly or wrongly this appears to be what’s happened to us. Caught everyone by surprise because Elche hospitals have only registered 20 deaths and never once was anywhere near overrun… In fact Vinalopo hospital only ever had a handful of cases, and wasn't really used… Elche General had a Covid ward.

CORONA CHAMELEONS GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY THE universe sometimes returns an ex, just to see if you’re still stupid. That’s what happened to me last week, when I was contacted, via WhatsApp chat. There wasn’t so much of a chat, instead, I was asked if I wanted to have sex again. I didn’t bother to reply, I deleted the message and laughed. Apart from the fact that said ex is in Monaco, and I’m in Marbella, the very idea that I wanted to share as much as an espresso, let alone a bed, made my stomach turn. An hour or so later, I was watching a movie and could hear my phone beeping from another room. Eventually, I went to investigate more similar messages, all from the same sender, filed in my phone as ‘Don’t Answer!’ I realised, I’m happy to be single. However, it threw up the question of what I’ll do next. If lockdown is to continue, one way or another, for the foreseeable future, perhaps I should take my friend Raf’s advice, and snoop on the dating apps. It’s a long time since I ventured into the strange world of dating apps, and last time, I recall it was a minefield. So many odd people - some desperate, some angry, some scarily crazy. I’m sure I fit into one of those categories, lord knows which one, but I couldn’t take it seriously. I checked, and so many people, all ready to chat. However, some, like the aforementioned ex, went straight to sex. I know people use apps for hookups, and that’s all good. But, basic, boring people, demanding XXX photos, without offering as much a clear face photo. Come on! Don’t get me wrong, I’m confident, but after nine weeks in lockdown, eating pasta, it would require Mario Testino to take my photos, if I wasn’t going to scare people. Then there are those who insist their photos are recent, even though they are clearly taken at bars, restaurants, or clubs, which have been closed for years. Surely, a recent photo is necessary, if we’re going to move past ‘hello.’ What next, we chat for months before meeting, and when we do, they’ve aged 20 years, gained 15 kilos, and somehow lost their hair? These, are what I call the Corona

STRANGE FEELING: To finally be free. Chameleons - a new breed of online daters, or online fakers, who create a whole new world, and image for themselves, as they know they have little, or no chance of meeting anytime soon. After just one hour of this bizarre world, I decided it wasn’t for me, deleted the apps and opened more wine. Like most, I had really missed my morning run. Admittedly, some days, the only way to move my ass and do it, was to reward myself with breakfast at The Marbella Club afterwards. When the government announced that exercise was permitted, I was like a giddy child at Christmas. So much so, I went to bed early, in order to be ready to go at 6am. My house is directly on the beach, and having spent the last two months staring out to sea, to finally be free was a strange feeling. I ran as fast as I could along the water’s edge, listening to Dimitri from Paris. Breathing the fresh morning air and realising, that the real world is waiting for us. All of nature, having been left alone, now in excessive bloom. Strangers, smiling as we pass. Perhaps, Covid lockdown has been something of a reset button from the universe. Having been locked away, suddenly I notice so many beautiful people running by. Marbella, I salute you. Who needs online, when we have real life? Remember, the universe who sends the ex back into your life, is the same one, who sends you many great opportunities each day. Now is the time to open our eyes, and most certainly our hearts.

El Hierro and La Graciosa were also jumpstarted, along with the Balearic island of Formentera. El Hierro, our diminutive neighbour, is 64km west, with 10,000 inhabitants. La Gomera’s small too, with 20,000 islanders. La Graciosa, 480kms NE, is the tiniest, with 745 souls. Mediterranean For mentera, Ibiza’s small neighbour, has 12,000 inhabitants. It’s a great joy here to finally walk the beach, hear children playing and chat to people. Small shops are reopening. Bars and restaurants are trickier. May’s always a quiet month. Everybody closes for maintenance and R&R after the winter season. Opening now for 50 per cent occupancy is unattractive. With 40 per cent of Canarians on gover nment aid, we’re strapped for cash. Tourist accommodation can also open, but there’s no point without tourists. A quick EWN investigation around the other islands reveals the same, with one notable difference: Formentera’s immediate prospects are better. The Baleares are summer season islands, whereas the Canaries are winter. El Hierro’s Cabildo emphasises primary sector export difficulties: “Our fishing fleet and pineapple grow-

We’re a long way from everywhere, with no tourists to eat the pineapples and fish!” Marvis Hernández, in dive/fishing village La Restinga, reports: “Only one bar, the Mar de Las Calmas, has opened so far.” Restaurateurs César and Eva, in Hermigua, La Gomera, say: “We’ll wait until late May. If national visitors can travel, we’ll open.” La Graciosa Councillor Alicia Páez confirms: “There’s still just a super market and a baker’s open here. That’s it for now.” La Gomera boasted the first confir med Covid-19 case in Spain on January 31. Local authorities moved quickly after the German Embassy notified them that a Ger man tourist was possibly infected. On arrival, he was located, tested positive and isolated. Since then, Cabildo

shutdown policies, with closed airports and ferry ports restricted to merchandise and approved passenger journeys only, have kept the virus out. Small islands are easy to isolate. We’ve had a first in, first out of trouble experience that’s worth noting. Nobody’s in any hurry to welcome untested, international tourists. These three small Canary Islands boast unique attractions. They’re off the beaten, mass tourism track, have extraordinary landscapes and are healthy places with good fresh fish and veg, excellent wines, interesting traditions, good music. They’ll need national tourism to survive until international travel’s possible So don’t despair if you can’t go abroad. Come and explore La Gomera, El Hierro or La Graciosa. You won’t be disappointed.

I’ve actually had enough now! MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man WELL here we are again, week whatever it is of lockdown and to be honest although I’ve tried to take the attitude of ‘keep calm and carry on’ and ‘we are all in this together’ etc, I’ve actually had enough now. Not with the fact that we have a worldwide pandemic and we have to be sensible but what’s making me grumpy is the confusion that is out there. This is mostly because the press keep putting stuff out that this unnamed source said this and this unconfirmed said that. Most turns out to be totally untrue and in some cases achieve nothing but fill a few column inches. This confuses people even more and can actually be damaging. It doesn’t help, of course, that a rule by the government here made on one day is then rumoured to be going to change the next day. So today for instance because I’m over 70, I can go for a walk with Mrs S at 7 pm but I’ve

now heard that as it’s too hot for younger people to go out earlier we may lose that slot to them. I don’t know if it’s true or not but if it is I have to ask why? Why is my well-being not as important as anybody else’s? I don’t want to be limited to only going out at 10 - 12 in the morning because it’s too hot. There’s so much confusion. I’ve now just heard I should try and use my exercise time to walk the dog as well but he stops every few feet and that’s no good to me. Now, if I had a bike I could go further and longer, but I haven’t so I can’t. My pal, who owns a bar/cafe doesn’t know exactly if he can open yet or not and if he does can anyone come at any time or only when they are allowed out? The CAB Facebook page is about as good as it gets but just reading it you can see that not everybody is understanding it all. There is no point either in slagging off or being rude to someone because you think their comment or question is not worthy. And remember the CAB guys are volunteers and working at full steam to keep us informed and I thank them very much for everything they do, especially Myra, who I share a slot with on Talk Radio Europe every other Friday at 11.30.

Adjusting to the ‘New normal’ MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED

WE hear this phrase being used quite a lot with recent events the ‘New Normal’.’ So what is it like having bipolar and adjusting to your ‘new normal’?! Having bipolar is a game changer, but you still have the power to decide where to set your goalposts for a fulfilling future. It took a long time for me to come to terms with and accepting the fact that I have a mental illness . But lately, I have been looking beyond my bipolar. With the skills and support to manage my symptoms, I am ready to make the most of my life and my abilities. There’s an end to saying ‘I survived the day.’ Now I’m more focused on what I can do to thrive. I’m not necessarily letting go of my struggle with bipolar disorder, but I am learning to thrive inside of it... I feel more optimistic than I have in a long time. In other words, I am embracing this ‘new normal.’ Basic milestones like keeping a routine, keeping your home organised and staying in contact with friends and family can begin to feel out of reach, being physically fit and healthy. A bipolar diagnosis doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to your hopes and dreams with patience, commitment, and a plan for setting realistic goals you can achieve anything you set out to do. It might take a little longer, and you might need some motivation to get there.

Letting go It’s important to take the time, to give yourself the time to be sad before moving on to make adjustments, before thinking about how you can have a really happy life. When I stopped comparing myself to others , my ‘new normal’ became less painful. I let go of the past and the ‘what ifs’ ‘what if I had done it differently.’ You can’t change the past, but you can change how your ‘today’ is going to be. Keep it real Lower your expectations too much and you’ll stay stuck. Aim too high and failure is almost certain. You need a just-right plan where you want to go with what you’re capable of right now. When a goal starts to take over someone’s time day or night, takes priority over having good relationships, or costs too much money or energy, that’s when you should worry. Sometimes you need to tone things down a little bit, keep it real. A new path Start by being more gentle with, and accepting of, yourself… to a certain extent, we all live wanting other people’s respect, but that craving can be more intense if you’re feeling insecure. A good way to set new goals is to look back at the ones you’ve already met, a lot of times they’ll be things that, six months before, you didn’t think you could do. Just because I have this illness doesn’t mean I have to feel sorry for myself and I don’t want other people to feel sorry for me, either. BARRY DUKE IT’S 2025. I still have a goatee and moustache, but they are no longer immaculately groomed. What’s the point as I am no longer allowed to show my face in public? For this I have to thank Professor Amanda Berk, of England’s Health Protection Agency. She invented a ‘smart’ full face and body covering to avoid repeats of pandemics such as Covid19. This was immediately adopted by disease control centres across the globe. Clerics representing religions that castigate women for dressing ‘immodestly’ were jubilant after the Berkquarantina - or ‘berka’ for short - was introduced, but they started kicking up holy hell after they realised the garment was mandatory for ALL sexes. Human rights activists were also dismayed by the garment, for not only does it have an inbuilt tracking device but also

Those who hug will be shocked into unconsciousness by higher voltages. When a member of the Human Disease Tracking Force arrived to hand over my ‘berka’ and closely watched me wriggle into it, I quipped ‘does my bum look big in this?’ He snapped: ‘Sir, if I had a euro for every time I’ve heard that, I’d be a very rich man.’

“WE are getting closer to the true definition of a superhero…” commented one Banksy fan on the elusive artist’s Instagram account next to an image of his latest work, a tribute to NHS workers created for staff at the Southampton General Hospital. The predominantly black and white painting, entitled Game Changer, shows a small boy kneeling next to discarded Batman and Spiderman figures and clutching instead a new NHS nurse superhero doll, complete with face mask. With her outstretched arm and billowing cape, she looks just like an action hero off to fight evil. The painting is now on display in a foyer near the hospital’s emergency department. Banksy left a note for the staff, saying: “Thanks for all you’re doing. I hope this brightens the place up a bit, even if it’s only black and white.” The painting will remain at the hospital until the autumn, when it will go under the hammer to raise funds for NHS charities.

PRIME MINISTER Boris Johnson said in his speech on Sunday, May 10 that Britain would introduce a 14-day quarantine for passengers flying into the country, which would mean that visitors would have to remain at a single address. Willie Walsh told MPs that there “was nothing positive in the address” from Johnson, and added that he would need to review plans to resume flights. Walsh is the chief executive of BA and Iberia’s parent group, IAG, and speaking to the House of Commons Transport Select Committee, he said quarantine would make

matters worse for travellers. “We had been planning to resume - on a pretty significant basis - our flying in July. I think we’d have to review that based on what the Prime Minister said on Sunday.” Other carriers like easyJet and Ryanair have condemned the quarantine plans, and Walsh said that the development made no sense as it was important to get the UK economy moving again. He also believed there was a strange inconsistency: “I think the air passenger quarantine is a surprise as similar measures are not in place for other forms of international travel.”
