READY TO OPEN?: Store floors marked for social distancing. DESPITE Spain’s slow but steady progress in deescalating out of the coronavirus health crisis, there is still a lot of confusion felt by residents in confinement about what rules apply, where they apply and to whom they apply. Thankfully measures are beginning to relax however, finding out which measures apply in which stage has been a headache for many. Firstly, the government said it would only de-escalate by provinces, and this has been the case in Andalucia, however, in other areas of the nation provinces have been allowed to de-escalate by sanitary districts. Why has the entirety of Malaga, which only has one sanitary district that does not comply with Phase 1 criteria, been forced to remain in Phase 0? Instead, territories in Valencia and Alicante with a higher incidence of the virus have been allowed to de-escalate separately. Not only this, but the constant backtracking on

rules and regulations has also proven confusing, to say the least. Initially, the new driving regulations were only applicable to residents in Phase 1, now they apply to Phase 0 as well. At one point, bars and restaurants were only allowed to open their terraces to accommodate 30 per cent of usual customers, after facing backlash they changed this to 50 per cent. Similarly, going to a residence in the same province was only allowed in Phase 2, after facing controversy this has been amended to Phase 1. It begs the question, how are these regulations being created and enforced? How much backlash must a regulation face before being adapted? What is the final say? These are important questions that business owners and customers must know the answers to if they plan on contributing to the economy and re-activating the notion of ‘new normality.’

Clearing Up Confusion TO make things a little simpler during this complicated time, we have developed an easy to read guide about what you can and can’t do during your deescalation phase: Can I travel to go and see my family or friends? No, if you are in Phase 0 you are not allowed to visit friends or family at their homes. Yes, if you are in Phase 1, you are permitted to hold small social gatherings of up to 10 people, but this must be within the same province. You are not allowed to travel outside of your province to visit anyone. Can I go to the bar/restaurant? No, if you are in Phase 0, bars and restaurants will remain closed to the public, however, you can go and pick up food to take away and eat at home. Yes, if you are in Phase 1, then bars and restaurants with open terraces will be open but at a limited capacity and correct hygiene measures should be abided to. Can I go to the hairdressers? Yes, no matter what phase you are in, businesses which take prior appointments will be open, all you need to do is book in advance.

EXERCISE: Is permitted in bothphases but at regulated times. Can I go to church or my place of worship? No if you are in Phase 0 this will be

closed. Yes, if you are in Phase 1. Can I travel in the car with my family?

Individuals in both Phase 0 and Phase 1 are now allowed to travel with members of their household in the same private vehicle, without using masks and occupying all seats available. However, if you are travelling with a non-household member you must wear a face mask and respect the maximum distance between passengers. Can I go out to do exercise? Yes, in both phases exercise is allowed, however, you must abide to your designated time slot. Children under the age of 14 (accompanied by an adult): From 12.00pm to 7.00pm Individuals over the age of 70: From 10.00am to 12.00pm and from 7.00pm to 8.00pm Individuals over 14 but under 70: From 6.00am to 10.00am and from 8.00pm to 11.00pm Can I take my children out? Yes, in both phases, either to accompany you to do activities permissible under your phase or during the designated exercise hours. When taking your child out for exercise this must be done by a single parent and only a maximum of three children can go out under the supervision of one parent.

Mayor begs local population to be sensible Morcilla Day OFFICIAL figures earlier this week revealed another coronavirus case in Nerja, bringing a total of eight. According to the Junta de Andalucia’s Health department, the Axarquia Health District had seven more cases, totalling 180 since the start of the coronavirus pandemic in Spain. Although eight coronavirus cases are relatively encouraging for a town with just over 21,000

inhabitants, Nerja’s mayor Jose Alberto Armijo called on the local population to act responsibly. Speaking at the beginning of this week, Armijo announced that Rincon de la Victoria, VelezMalaga, Algarrobo and Torrox registered 46 more cases over the previous fortnight, 12 of them in the last 24 hours. “We cannot lower our guard. The increase in

cases means that we must remain in Phase Zero of the health authorities’ de-escalation programme,” he said. “All the efforts that we are making are useless unless we maximise safety to prevent the pandemic from affecting us,” the mayor declared, urging residents to be scrupulous in complying with the measures introduced to prevent the spread of the virus.

CANILLAS DE ACEITUNO . had to celebrate Morcilla (Black Pudding) Day a different way this year thanks to Covid-19, with online morcilla recipes on the Catar en Casa website from Sergio Garrido and an interview with Tourism councillor Alvaro Hurtado.

Tax break New arrival FRIGILIANA town hall will waive this year’s tax on bar and restaurant tables in public areas. Although the announcement was made on the assumption that Axarquia would progress to Phase One of the deescalation process on May 12, Frigiliana’s mayor Alejandro Herrero also said the exemption until 2021 would be extended to other businesses. The town hall is also working on plans to promote the municipality’s 600 rural tourist properties and launch a public works and services programme.

SALOBREÑA’S Local Police have another officer, bringing their number up to 22. Salobreña’s mayor Maria Eugenia expressed satisfaction at welcoming another officer to the force and, she said, was glad that the latest addition was a woman.

Car on fire ALMUÑECAR’S fire brigade took more than 90 minutes using foam, water and extinguishers to control the blaze after a top-of-therange car caught fire in Cuesta Godoy. The Local Police are now investigating possible causes for the fire.

MALAGA Province, which includes the whole of the Costa del Sol and Axarquia, was denied permission to move to Phase 1 of de-escalation by Spain’s PM Pedro Sanchez and the Ministry of Health this past weekend. Andalucia’s request for Axarquia to be allowed to move to Phase 1 by health district with additional restrictions, which would have allowed some municipalities to move to Phase 1, was also denied. Although Axarquia was very close to meeting the conditions set by the Ministry of Health in ter ms of the number of available beds and the rate of new Covid19 cases, they simply didn’t fulfil all the set criteria and health markers, “to cope with a new wave of cases,” according to the Ministry of Health. One of the health markers includes having two available ICU (intensive care unit) hospital beds per 100,000 inhabitants, as well as be-

Passengers and drivers TORROX has a bus service once again, although with strict health and safety measures. Drivers are not providing change and passengers must hand over the exact amount of €1 for a ticket or 60 cents for pensioners. No more than 25 people are allowed on each bus at any one time to maintain the required 1.5-metre distance between passengers and, as is obligatory throughout Spain on public transport, face masks must be worn. It should not be difficult to comply with this, pointed out Torrox mayor Oscar Medina, as the town hall has provided 60,000 masks which Correos are delivering in packs of five to each local household. Meanwhile, Medina presented Torrox’s 18 taxi-drivers screens to protect both cabbies and clients. The screens are the same as those used at the town hall, Medina said. “We wanted the taxi-drivers to have them too as, owing to their vehicles’ characteristics, it is impossible for them to maintain a safe distance, unlike buses where passengers can’t sit behind the driver.”

EXCLUDING the town from Phase One of the State of Alarm de-escalation timetable was an injustice, said Almuñecar’s mayor Trinidad Herrera. “Of course we all agree that health must come first, but we have followed the same guidelines as other towns,” she pointed out. “I think it’s an injustice and a lack of democratic principles to

It’s very sad that we have been left to one side like this,” Herrero concluded.

Fiestas suspended ALMUÑECAR has decided to suspend this year’s town fiestas. Following a historic decision prompted by the Covid-19 crisis, Fiestas councillor Alberto Manuel Garcia Gilabert announced that there will be no fireworks on August 15 in honour of the Virgen de la Antigua. “The decision was expected and carefully thought through but still produces a great amount of sadness,” Garcia Gilabert admitted. “Although August is three months away it’s obvious that our cherished fiestas are at odds with the coronavirus. Like other events worldwide, they had to be suspended to avoid crowded gatherings.” The entire fiestas Budget of €200,000 will be used to alleviate the ‘grave socio-economic

The Ministry of Health has already said, this weekend, that it is “probable” that Axarquia will move to Phase 1 from May 18, however, only time will tell. Pedro Sánchez will meet with the committee that directs the de-escalation plan tomorrow, Friday May 15. Minister of Health, Salvador Illa explained that he expects reports from each community for that day. Although the local and regional authorities consider that this week of delay may have been detrimental to Axarquia, what the rest of Andalucia is showing is that the economic reincorporation of commerce and restoration is gradual.

San Isidro TOMORROW Friday, May 15, will not be a local bank holiday due to the State of Alarm. Nerja Town Hall has agreed to change this day for September 29. So the two local bank holidays 2020 for Nerja will be: June 24 and September 29.

Driver finally does the right thing A HIT-AND-RUN driver responsible for a serious accident in Benajarafe later gave himself up to the police. Losing control of the vehicle, he crashed the car with its four occupants into buildings in Calle Francisco Merino Ramirez. He fled the scene, leaving a woman who was badly hurt inside the car and two others with minor injuries. After being taken into custody he has been charged with breaking lockdown regulations, dangerous driving and failing in his duty to provide assistance in an accident.

HASTILY suppressed laughter greeted Francisco Ignacio Delgado Bonilla as he returned from a short break during Velez-Malaga’s last Zoom council meeting. The Partido Popular councillor was one of 24 councillors taking part in the meeting when at one point, Delgado Bonilla disappeared from the screen while another was speaking. Shortly afterwards, all taking part heard the unmistakable sound of somebody answering a call of nature. The councillor finished his speech while the others taking part in the video-meeting did their best to contain their laughter without entirely succeeding, witnesses said. He was finally let off without a fine and walked off, not without difficulty as the goat was unwilling to cooperate. And as one passer-by commented, “Possibly he thought it was okay to take a kid out for a walk.”

No Sales

IN the small print of the Official State Bulletin order approved this Saturday, May 9, the government has included a prohibition regarding sales at physical shops, which will affect the more relaxed opening of shops in Phase 1. However, this measure will only affect physical stores as it aims to avoid crowds and an over-saturation of people. “This restriction will not affect sales or sale promotions made through the websites” states the order. Neither employers nor large operators understand the meaning of the measure, which they describe as ‘incongruous.’ This measure was established to give an opportunity to smaller businesses

to compete with larger ones, but the fact that there will still be online sales means there will be a clear imbalance between the large textile companies, who have a digital media presence and platforms for this kind of sales versus the SMEs and autonomous workers who do not.

Travel Ban More Waves Coming Extension SPAIN and its European Union fellow countries are set to keep a non-essential travel ban going for potential visitors trying to get in from outside the region. The European Commission has asked for formal approval to extend the limitation for another month, which would take it through to June 15. The proposal has to be officially rubber-stamped by the leaders of each EU member country. Despite progress in the fight against Covid-19 within individual countries, the EU Commission says that it wants to make sure that travel will not spread the virus into its area. The Commission added that the priority was reopening up borders between its members ahead of the rest of the world. Spain is a member of the socalled Schengen area, which allows free movement across the borders of other European countries like France.

SPAIN’S army is predicting two more waves of coronavirus outbreaks in the country. Their report said that it would take between 12 and 18 months for Spain to return to “normality.” The timings would also depend on when a vaccine is developed and administered. Army experts have produced some sombre reading for politicians and the country’s population. “There will be a second wave of Covid-19 in the autumn or winter,” the report said. “It will be less serious than the initial outbreak due to higher immunity in the population and better preparations.” Their analysis also said that a third wave could happen next year, but the effects would lessen still further, especially if a vaccine was available. The army has played a big part in fighting the coronavirus since the State of Alarm was introduced during mid-March. Thousands of soldiers and military doctors have worked across medical facilities and key transport centres. The report also suggests that “it would be extremely important” to develop a contact tracing method using mobile phone apps.

ARRIVING IN SPAIN: People must spend two weeks in isolation. TRAVEL agencies, tour operators, and transport companies are now obligated to inform potential holidaymakers and travellers about the new quarantine measures when selling tickets destined towards any Spanish territories. “People coming from abroad must quarantine for 14 days following their arrival,” stated the Official State Bulletin on Tuesday, May 12. This order established by the Ministry of

Health, which comes into force at 12.00am on May 15, aims to enforce a quarantine for people arriving in Spain from abroad, at least until the State of Alarm lasts. It establishes that any person who travels to Spain from abroad, regardless if they are Spanish or foreign, must be quarantined for two weeks either ‘at home or accommodation, and must limit their movements’ to certain activities such as ‘ac-

quisition of food, pharmaceuticals, access to health centres or due to force majeure.’ The transborder workers, transporters and crews are exempt from this standard, ‘provided they have not been in contact with people diagnosed with Covid19.’ Airlines must also provide a Passenger Location Card for passengers to fill in upon arrival in case they must be located once they have entered Spain.

Apparently, the little girl, was Julen Roselló's cousin, the two-year-old Spanish boy who fell 70m into a narrow shaft near Totalán in Málaga, on January 13, 2019. The shaft, illegally excavated, was 110m deep and had a diameter of 25cm.

Political Viewpoint from Spain

SO, our worst fears came true and now the country is split. By allowing some areas to advance to Phase 1 and holding others like Malaga and Granada in Phase 0 the backlash has begun. The President of the Andalucian Government, Juan Manuel Moreno, has warned the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, of the “reputational damage” that the decision to leave the province of Malaga out of Phase 1 of the de-escalation causes the brand of the Costa del Sol. It should be noted that tourism represents 12 per cent of the economy in Andalucia and 13 per cent of employment. At the Conferencia de Presidentes on Sunday, Moreno aired his complaints about discriminatory treatment to Andalucia with the

de-escalation and, in particular, these areas. Some may say that the decision shows preference to the PNV, the party that keeps Sanchez in gover nment, it would also seem to favour the Alicante district which just so happens to be a PSOE area. PSOE is Sanchez’s party. The PP, who

is the opposition party cover the Andalucian area. Does this make it look more like a political strategy than a health strategy? Also, if that is the case does that mean that political strategy is used to make other important decisions in Spain as opposed to what is better for the residents?

According to the Chairman of the Board, the proposal of its Executive to keep the health district in Phase 0, was based on prudence. Sánchez, defended the criteria for passing the phase “are those of the health emergency” and has advocated “depoliticising it” and “focusing on the criteria of

scientific experts.” Therefore, Dr Fernando Simón, the expert from the Ministry of Health, said on Saturday that he believes that “probably” Granada and Malaga will be able to go to Phase 1 next week, “but all this requires that there be a request by the entire province.”

Terrorist Takedown Brink of collapse OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil in Barcelona have arrested a Moroccan citizen for his association to the terrorist group Daesh. The investigation was coordinated with the

help of Moroccan DGST and the FBI. The detainee had been showing clear signs of radicalisation and affinity with the terrorist group Daesh for four years now.

His radicalisation was discreetly carried out both in a physical and virtual sense and he had never been identified as a critical actor. However, during the State of Alarm this radicalisation grew more prominent causing authorities to become alarmed. Police hypothesise that this intensification happened as Daesh made a call to all solitary actors who found themselves in western territories telling them to mobilise and carry out attacks. Virtually, the detainee was publicly manifesting his hate for the West on social media and, physically, he was seen breaking quarantine and possibly scouting areas to attack. The investigation determined that he was completely influenced by their propaganda and had sworn his loyalty to Daesh, subsequently causing his arrest as he posed a threat to the general public.

NEW CARS: Sales have plummeted this year so far. SPAIN’s new car sales plummeted this year to an all-time low of 4,163 units in April, following a 69.3 per cent tumble in the previous month, as the country was under lockdown and dealerships were closed during the month as a result of the Covid19 outbreak. After a few phone calls to car dealerships, it became apparent that people are simply not buying new models, preferring instead to hold on to their old ones. The problem is that it has a massive knock-on effect across the whole of the Spanish economy and not just for the

manufacturers. It affects the distributors, the drivers, the workforces, and the hundreds of smaller but essential workshops dotted around Spain that produce bespoke parts. Unemployment caused by the epidemic in Spain also means that people can’t afford to get their cars repaired, affecting the service industry. Everything from tyres to oil and petrol has experienced a massive drop in sales. Classified columns are full of secondhand cars for sale as people need to sell them to pay the rent or buy food. This all adds up to a lack of demand for new cars.

Gambling company credit rating reduced by US giant FOR years it seemed as if running online betting was akin to printing money but then along came the coronavirus, Covid 19 pandemic and things changed quickly. Whilst many might expect the lock down to encourage gambling, the slow down of economies and loss of income for many means that the online casinos are also not making the money they used to. Codere runs its business in Spain, Italy, Mexico and South America but with bet ting shops closed and money tight, it has now received a blow as US giant Moody’s

By John Smith has downgraded its credit rating by two points as it has delayed payment of inter est on bonds worth €27 million. According to the ratings agency, the company faces the reality of the maturity of bonds worth €800 million in the latter part of next year and it fears that the bet ting company could end up in default as it already has liquidity problems. Codere has called in a specialist firm of advisers to try to help it renegotiate its

debts, but even if its betting shops open within the next few weeks, if there are no significant sporting events for customers to bet on, then cash flow will be more of a trickle. It is quoted on the Spanish stock ex change and is now looking for a further €100 million in loans to keep going. Lack of liquidity coupled with the fact that lenders may well be more interested in backing larger enterprises with greater assets means Codere which employs some 12,000 staff could be in trouble.

LEGALLY SPEAKING Can they be evicted? Prior to the current lockdown we had finan cial difficulties and we had received an evic tion notice to vacate the premises in July. I have read that the government has decreed the ‘Suspen sion of all evictions without housing alternative until six months have elapsed from the end of the alarm state.’ If this decree is not applicable in my circum stances, are there other routes in law we can take to request an extension? I fear that, when the lockdown ends, I will have no time to find a job, if there are any, or an alternative property. L B (Costa del Sol) The de cree of no evictions seems to apply to your situa YOU AND THE LAW tion. Also there is a IN SPAIN sixmonth exten sion of home rental contracts. Other relief measures in clude microcredits, or small loans, at 0 per cent interest to pay back in six years, and even direct grants up to €900 for the neediest cases. These measures apply to people who have lost their jobs and the selfemployed who have seen their income drop sharply or even disappear. The ICO, or Instituto de Credito Oficial, guarantees the loans and you apply through your bank.

Bitcoin devaluation EVERY four years the value of crypto currency bitcoin is halved in a deliberate effort to slow down the number of coins ‘mined.’ At the onset of the coronavirus Covid19 pandemic the value of a single bitcoin dropped to $4,200 (€3,876) but now a few days be fore the devaluation, it has jumped back to just below $10,000 (€9,232). It is understood that the total number of bitcoins that can ever be mined is 21 million and the cur rent number in existence is 18 mil lion.

Lenders return £100 million IN 2010, the newly formed Metro Bank Plc became the f i r s t n e w U K h i g h s t re e t bank to launch in 150 years and all went well at first. Initially a privately owned bank, it launched on the stock exchange and by 2018, share prices rose to almost £40 (€46) but the revelation of a major accounting error saw shares plummet and the resignation of its two founders. Now it is being openly courted by Colombian investor Jaime Gilinski who was formerly the largest in vestor in Spain’s Sabadell Bank has now become the largest sharehold er in Metro by increasing his holding

MARCH 2020: A bad time to open the new branch in Liverpool.

Not a rescue SPANISH Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has warned that loans of €540 billion to be made by the Eurogroup to member states are not a bailout but credit lines to help each

government’s economy. The money is coming from two sources with the European ‘bailout’ fund (ESM) inputting €240 billion, the European Investment Bank is

funding €200 billion. A further €100 billion will be given by the European Commission in order to support measures such as paid furloughs known in Spain as ERTE.

through British Virgin Islands sub sidiary Spaldy Investments to 9 per cent. The British government has been encouraging banks to make special loans and set up new accounts for small businesses and made a grant of £50 million (€57.5 million) to Metro but the bank has now decid ed to refund the loan and not in crease its commitment to business risk. One of Britain’s largest lenders, the Nationwide Building Society has followed suit, returning its grant of £50 million because it believes that the ongoing risk of lending to small businesses following the coron avirus Covid19 pandemic is simply too great. The decision to pull out of this market is estimated as being likely to cost Nationwide £70 million (€80.5 million). The decision made by both lenders was released after a report from the Corporate Finance Net work of accountants suggested that up to 18 per cent of all small and mediumsized businesses in the UK could collapse.

COMMUNIT

John Sharples, Costa del Sol “I nominate John Sharples, he has kept the community going with online quizzes and bingo and his general witty personality and banter have been delightful even though he has been fighting his own very hard battle with throat cancer. He has also been collecting pet food donations for ACE and runs the popular What’s On in La Cala de Mijas page on Facebook. I truly think he deserves this award.” - Stephanie Mary McDonnell. “He has brought the community together

by running the What’s On in La Cala de Mijas page. He has kept us informed with up-to-date information. He has arranged with the local Lions organisation to provide jigsaws to those who need them to relieve the boredom of lockdown. He has given us something to look forward to with his banter and wit and has through Social Media brought the community together instead of us being apart. A real shining light.” - Alison Burridge

Adrian Cockings and Paloma Cockings, Costa Blanca “This amazing couple, with a little newborn baby, has been keeping us all informed daily, since the start of lockdown with the Facebook page Corona Virus in Spain. Adrian has been doing a daily video, translating all the info from the Royal Decree, and explaining what we can and can’t do. This was done purely to help us all while he isn’t working as an Estate Agent. We would all be very confused about what we are allowed to do if it wasn’t for this fantastic couple.” - Anne Clink

Kara Caradas, Costa del Sol “I would like to nominate Kara, the owner of The Boardwalk in Marbella. She has long per for med and supported charitable work and during these extraordinary circumstances she has both inspired and supported her community via The Food Fairies project, rallying individuals and businesses to donate, volunteer and contribute to some of the most vulnerable in her area. Her work has been quite remarkable.” - Gemma Wedlock “She has always had the biggest heart. She will put everyone who needs help before herself. She has a radar for the needy in humans and animals and this crisis brought her out the day after being asked by the local authorities to close her own business and stop herself and her staff earning money. She got up, got her family and friends together and began yet another crucial and lifesaving event. The Angel of the Costa del Sol I’m proud to call my friend xx” - Karoline Coster Barrett

“I was in Spain on the day that the lockdown was announced and their daily updates were a huge help to me. I had just arrived on holiday as everything started to close down. Without their hard work to put out all of the vital information, I would have been really stuck. It’s thanks to them that I knew to book an earlier flight and get out before the flights were all cancelled.” - Jayn Edmondson

E U R O W E E K LY NEWS is appealing to our loyal readers to help identify your ‘Community Hero.’ After we posted our appeal in the latest issue of our papers and on our busy Facebook page we have been inundated with your suggestions in comments and by email. So, who has helped your local community the most during this uncertain isolation period? Who do you think deserves something back, to be rewarded for their selfless actions? It may be someone who has delivered food to those in need, kept everybody informed of the constantly changing information or made others happy with their good deeds. If somebody has done something special for you during this health crisis maybe this is the time for you to pay

Martin Hamilton, Costa Blanca South “He has done more for his community and surrounding areas throughout the lockdown. Apart from keeping both shops open throughout the lockdown by taking orders for customers to collect. He has entertained us all every morning with his comedy acts taking off well-known singers and dressing up to look like them. I’m 74 yrs old and live alone but he is the highlight of my day which has given me the strength to get through each day. He has also

supported the community by setting up donations of money and food so he can ensure any family in need do not go hungry.” - Lynne Hayes “I would like to nominate Martin Hamilton from Hamilton’s Bakery Benijofar, for all he has done to keep people smiling, and the food bank he has organised to help needy people.” - Julie Foster

Josefina Navarro, Granada “Fina is a refugee here in Spain but has always looked out for everyone she meets. She has shepherded many of us expats through immigration hurdles, house-hunting and other aspects of daily life, always with an enormous smile on her tiny self. The moment we were allowed outdoor activity, she came to my home with her shopping trolley to pick up some groceries. She took them off to a nearby family in need while swaddled up in her makeshift protective gear. She is a ray of light for all around her.” - Steve Corlew

“Fina was a volunteer at the Red Cross before the lockdown, but she has doubled down on her work since. While others were afraid to leave their homes, Fina risked her own health to work. “A friend of ours had his foot amputated last December. He has been shut in alone during this time, Fina not only gets medicines, groceries, and other services for him, but she stands outside his apartment to check up on him. “Even if she is not directly assist-

ing us in a particular matter, she greets us every day with positive wishes on WhatsApp to keep everyone’s spirits up.” - Jim Wasserman

Trish Kelly, Kelly’s Bar, Monte Duquesa “During lockdown, Trish has been a godsend to her elderly customers (who she helps all throughout the year, as well as now). Trish is known for her kind heart, during the past year she has visited patients in hospital and taken food to her elderly customers. Now she has ‘upped her game.’ “She cooks 50 to 100 meals roughly a week for St George’s charity collective who have been feeding people who can’t support themselves. She has arranged for food parcels, bought masks, visors and gloves for community members.

Alison Bramwell, Mojacar “She has not only done so much for the community of Mojacar before the Covid-19 Crisis with her ceaseless charity work of helping the MACS Charity, but for all of us who have been stuck indoors for the past eight weeks, now going into our ninth with her Fitness and Exercise Workouts being posted via Facebook and email. She has truly kept us on our toes with her daily workouts of Zumba, Dance, Pilates and Stretch routines making it fun for All of

us yet a vital part for us to be able to stay fit and healthy whilst in lockdown. Not only has she been doing this but has also offered her services to any of us who have found ourselves in need of help during this trying time.” - Jan Crossfield

Neil Kinrade, Costa Blanca South

14 - 20 May 2020

Saloua Sfar, Mallorca “I would like to nominate Saloua Sfar who owns a small restaurant, Ma Maison, in Palma De Mallorca. She cooks and has just two staff. “Visiting the local soup kitchen, she was dismayed to learn that they didn’t have enough food and were turning people away even hungry babies. “Most are not homeless, but desperately in need, because of the pandemic. She has raised the money and is providing baby food and free meals to many, many people. “Every Christmas she raises money and enlists the help of other chefs to cook for over 500 children and provide them with gifts. “The woman has a heart of gold and deserves some sort of acknowledgement. I hope you choose her.” - Barbara Jago

“I would like to nominate our golf Society president Mr Neil Kinrade. “Neil has set up a community in Playa Flamenca to help families around the area. He has helped at least 10 families whether it’s paying their bills, rent or sending food parcels. He also helps with medical expenses for people that can’t afford it.

“He donated funds to the staff of our bar as he knew they were waiting over seven weeks for payment from the government. We have a team of five and he has asked for no recognition or payment in return. “He is a genuine guy and a caring soul, even if he didn’t win I think it would be nice to recognise people like Neil for all their hard work.” - Laura Delaney

Jorge González, Cantoria “All this, whilst being a mother to six children (all grown up, but still local and a grandmother to Leo who is one in a couple of weeks. “Her stepmother was cremated and she couldn’t attend the funeral in the UK and her father has had Coronavirus. Yet she has tirelessly worked for the community.” - Sarah Waldman

“I would like to nominate Jorge Gonzales (George Gon) of the Cantoria Town Hall as a thank you for all the hard work he has done for our community, before and during lockdown.” - Carole Byrne “I would like to nominate Jorge Gonzalez in Cantoria. He works for the town hall assisting all the expats in the community with whatever they need, whenever they need it. He is tireless in his efforts to

smooth out the lumps and bumps we all encounter when negotiating Spanish bureaucracy or the health system or anything else that crops up. “During the current crisis, he has been all round the village and outlying areas delivering face masks to everyone. He’s always there, for everyone, whatever the problem. I’ve never seen him wearing a cape, but he certainly is a hero.” - A Weston

A constant during the crisis Golden Leaves l a n o i t a n r e t n I is here to help THE coronavirus pandemic has effectively knocked the world off its axis and changed almost ever y facet of our daily lives, confining nations t o t he i r h o m es , an d bringing with it an unprecedented fear of the unknown. Even the process of grieving has changed as peop l e a r e f o rc e d t o mour n the death of a loved one in isolation. Throughout these uncertain times, Golden Leaves International has remained consistent throughout the expat community, supporting various charities and causes as people find their way through anxious and frightening times. EWN spoke to International Operations Director, Emma Quantrill, at the firm’s head office in Javea. She said: “We have been and are here throughout this health crisis, it’s important for Golden Leaves that expats know this even if people don’t have a Funeral Plan with us. “It’s a difficult time for people but we are specialists in this field, and if people just need to talk, please contact us we are here to listen and help.” Emma commented “We’ve been video calling as we have found it is far more reassuring and comforting for the community to see our faces. In addition, most of the calls we have been receiving are from clients wonderi n g

how the funerals will work during this time. Our support and service process is still the s a m e . We d o u n d e r stand why people are ringing to make sure as it’s a worrying time and people are more anxious. “Our advice, as always, is if someone loses a friend or loved one, ring us first. As long as you have a plan with us, we will take care of everything and if not, we can give you advice and point you in the right direction.” She added: “These are unprecedented times; it can be difficult to reach out to people who are grieving because there are different stages to grief. It’s just important to let them know they are not alone.” Emma has seen a lot of change in attitudes towards death over the years, and even more so now, in the midst of the pandemic. “Death is on people’s minds now, it’s not as taboo a subject as it once was, and people are more open to talking about and planning ahead for it. “It’s important to put an End of Life plan in place, not just because of the pandemic, but also because of Brexit. “We have found that with Brexit and now the pandemic, people are understandably worried as many longstanding companies have gone into administration. I can assure everyone that we have an independent Trust Fund in place to safeguard your plan purchase against this situation occurring.”

HERE FOR YOU: Emma, International Operations Director.

PERSONAL IMPACT HEALTH INSURANCE Specialist, Victoria, is also hands on throughout the crisis, advising and reassuring clients and others who need assistance. While she and the rest of the team have maintained a presence throughout the State of Alarm, she says how it has affected her personally. “My life has changed a lot due to lockdown,” said Victoria. “I have a five-year-old son, He’s at home with my husband. “It’s been hard not being able to go out with my boy. It was his birthday last month and he obviously wanted to see his friends. “He has been fantastic and very understanding of this overwhelming situation. His

school did an amazing job and explained everything before it closed, and we reinforced the message at home too. In truth it’s hard for him to understand in full because he can’t physically see it.” But Emma says she feels lucky and privileged. “The confinement side of lockdown has not really had much of an impact on me. I am fortunate to be able to adapt to a situation and changes in circumstance. “We are all now in a new world and we are all doing our jobs differently and to the best of our ability. “My team and I are concentrating on helping other people who are in a much less fortunate position.”

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I CANNOT personally join in the condemnation and leftie gloating over the British government’s handling of the PPE dilemma. With the growing pressure and need for more and more supplies it is plainly obvious that ministers have been searching far and wide for ways of obtaining these lifesaving pieces of equipment. After all, who would have thought that Turkey of all places would have some means of producing vast amounts of these vital medical items? A number of other countries in the world, seeing a chance of a quick profit, have turned their hand to manufacturing these supplies, is it no wonder that much of it is inferior or not fit for purpose? The most despicable country of all of course is China. With its vast manufacturing ‘robot’ manufacturing capabilities the Chinese are pouring all their efforts into churning out as much

Not fit for the purpose

MEDICAL SUPPLIES: Many countries are now manufacturing these. PPE and breathing equipment as possible. Millions of tons are being manufactured from their factories, many of which are springing up virtually overnight. They are hawking their products around the world and, according to reports, ‘customers’ are being given 15 minutes to make decisions on millions of

pounds worth of goods or else it gets offered to someone else! This is a disgraceful state of affairs. It’s almost a take it or leave it scenario. And what about the moral issues? The country responsible for the whole debacle is making billions from the victims of their actions. That’s like demolishing

someone’s house without their permission and charging the owners for rebuilding. What they should be doing is donating all their products free of charge. At least this would go some way to making amends for this scourge of death and misery they have released on the world. Well don’t hold your breath for that scenario; they’re too busy making sure they’re all fir mly on board before the world’s economy ‘gangplank’ plunges into the water. Five weeks ago I wrote that the ethnic areas of the UK cities weren’t taking a blind bit of notice of the gover nment’s advice for social distancing or staying indoors. Mosques were still open and some Imams were telling their followers the virus was ‘not their problem’ and was ‘Allah’s revenge on the Infidel.’ I said at the time that when they began to drop like flies, it

would be a whole different story. Well it’s happened hasn’t it? It is now being reported that those from ethnic communities have up to four times the chance of dying from the virus than their white counterparts. They actually are trying to insinuate that this disease has some kind of racist connotations! What a load of old codswallop. The only reason there are more people dying from the ethnic communities is because the majority consider themselves totally alien from the rules and regulations that govern the country they live in. End of. I do not of course include those from these communities working in the front lines. These are the givers. Unfortunately they are a very small percentage of their compatriots. Face workout Adjusting to the

‘New normal’ MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED

WE hear this phrase being used quite a lot with recent events the ‘New Normal’.’ So what is it like having bipolar and adjusting to your ‘new normal’?! Having bipolar is a game changer, but you still have the power to decide where to set your goalposts for a fulfilling future. It took a long time for me to come to terms with and accepting the fact that I have a mental illness . But lately, I have been looking beyond my bipolar. With the skills and support to manage my symptoms, I am ready to make the most of my life and my abilities. There’s an end to saying ‘I survived the day.’ Now I’m more focused on what I can do to thrive. I’m not necessarily letting go of my struggle with bipolar disorder, but I am learning to thrive inside of it... I feel more optimistic than I have in a long time. In other words, I am embracing this ‘new normal.’ Basic milestones like keeping a routine, keeping your home organised and staying in contact with friends and family can begin to feel out of reach, being physically fit and healthy. A bipolar diagnosis doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to your hopes and dreams with patience, commitment, and a plan for setting realistic goals you can achieve anything you set out to do. It might take a little longer, and you might need some motivation to get there.

Letting go It’s important to take the time, to give yourself the time to be sad before moving on to make adjustments, before thinking about how you can have a really happy life. When I stopped comparing myself to others , my ‘new normal’ became less painful. I let go of the past and the ‘what ifs’ ‘what if I had done it differently.’ You can’t change the past, but you can change how your ‘today’ is going to be. Keep it real Lower your expectations too much and you’ll stay stuck. Aim too high and failure is almost certain. You need a just-right plan where you want to go with what you’re capable of right now. When a goal starts to take over someone’s time day or night, takes priority over having good relationships, or costs too much money or energy, that’s when you should worry. Sometimes you need to tone things down a little bit, keep it real. A new path Start by being more gentle with, and accepting of, yourself… to a certain extent, we all live wanting other people’s respect, but that craving can be more intense if you’re feeling insecure. A good way to set new goals is to look back at the ones you’ve already met, a lot of times they’ll be things that, six months before, you didn’t think you could do. Just because I have this illness doesn’t mean I have to feel sorry for myself and I don’t want other people to feel sorry for me, either. Email me and tell me all about your goals you want to achieve and how you want to do it, together we can help each other! Follow me on facebook@mswillow bipolar. Love Ms Bipolar x

HEALTHY FACE GLOW: Can be achieved by face exercising. YOUR face has over 50 different muscles and they are rarely used, unlike other muscles in the body. By exercising face muscles blood circulation activates in different areas of the face, replenishing the oxy-

gen supply in skin and muscles. This helps to achieve a bright and healthy glow. Exercising the face will keep facial muscles fit for the long term. Facial muscle exercises improve blood flow and supplies skin

with nutrients and prevents wrinkles. In order to achieve results quickly, it is recommended to exercise the face three to five times a week for around 20 minutes. Results should be visible within two months.

I’ve actually had enough now! MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man WELL here we are again, week whatever it is of lockdown and to be honest although I’ve tried to take the attitude of ‘keep calm and carry on’ and ‘we are all in this together’ etc, I’ve actually had enough now. Not with the fact that we have a worldwide pandemic and we have to be sensible but what’s making me grumpy is the confusion that is out there. This is mostly because the press keep putting stuff out that this unnamed source said this and this unconfirmed said that. Most turns out to be totally untrue and in some cases achieve nothing but fill a few column inches. This confuses people even more and can actually be damaging. It doesn’t help, of course, that a rule by the government here made on one day is then rumoured to be going to change the next day. So today for instance because I’m over 70, I can go for a walk with Mrs S at 7 pm but I’ve now heard that as it’s too hot for

younger people to go out earlier we may lose that slot to them. I don’t know if it’s true or not but if it is I have to ask why? Why is my well-being not as important as anybody else’s? I don’t want to be limited to only going out at 10 - 12 in the morning because it’s too hot. There’s so much confusion. I’ve now just heard I should try and use my exercise time to walk the dog as well but he stops every few feet and that’s no good to me. Now, if I had a bike I could go further and longer, but I haven’t so I can’t. My pal, who owns a bar/cafe doesn’t know exactly if he can open yet or not and if he does can anyone come at any time or only when they are allowed out? The CAB Facebook page is about as good as it gets but just reading it you can see that not everybody is understanding it all. There is no point either in slagging off or being rude to someone because you think their comment or question is not worthy. And remember the CAB guys are volunteers and working at full steam to keep us informed and I thank them very much for everything they do, especially Myra, who I share a slot with on Talk Radio Europe every other Friday at 11.30.

YOUR STARS FOR NEXT 7 DAYS ARIES (March 21 - April 20) It seems that you are putting a lot of effort into whatever you do without getting as much out as you would like. However, as the week goes by, you will realise that it is only a temporary situation. Sometimes, it takes others a period of adjustment before they are ready to accept changes of a personal nature.

TAURUS (April 21 - May 21) The brick wall that you start banging your head against this week is not an illusion. It is, indeed, true that others are not responding to you in an expected way. By Wednesday this wall will start to fall and people will be more receptive. There is a time and place for everything and you will find it eventually.

GEMINI (May 22 - June 21) Everything seems an effort at the beginning of this week but as energy levels pick up you will gain momentum. Tackle one thing at a time and realise that Rome was not, indeed, built in a day. As the weekend approaches you will begin to realise that you have been far more effective than you thought.

CANCER (June 22 - July 23) You really do need to come to an understanding with friends over a social matter, although this may take a little effort this week. It is clear that there are those who are less helpful than others, but this could be because of a misunderstanding. Maybe you need to put forward your plans a little more forcibly so that no one can misunderstand.

LEO (July 24 - August 23) Be a social animal this week and you will strengthen both people and business contacts. After being busy last week, you may be inclined to take it easy. If it is the case that you really are low on energy, then use the telephone or email to full advantage to keep in touch.

VIRGO (August 24 - September 23) Someone well and truly treads on your toes this week and it really puts your teeth on edge. There are some bridges that may not be mended at the present time and are best left alone. Show your generous side but resist the urge to give in on an important issue because you are likely to regret it later.

LIBRA (September 24 - October 23) What a lovely surprise to find that something you have always wanted is coming your way at last. Keep a firm hand with finances and take control if you want to organise things for the better. Your destiny is, for the most part, in your hands.

SCORPIO (October 24 - November 22) Be cautious this week with your money. You have been aware for some time now that a change in your finances is likely. You have this in common with many others in your situation. Seeking professional help can be free and can make a big difference.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21) A special chance to try something new should not be passed over. No one expects wonders from you, they are happy just to see you enjoying life. A recent change in your attitude to your future is already showing.

CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) Your home life gives you the most satisfaction at the moment even though someone seems to be challenging you. Some things are best ignored until they go away of their own accord and that also often applies to people. There is a time for everything and choosing it will make a task that could be difficult that much easier.

AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19) Involvement in a situation connected with someone close may not be the best option this week. Giving advice is all well and good so long as you are sure of your facts. Your loyalty to someone is not in doubt but your help should be more from the sidelines than direct.

PISCES (February 20 - March 20) Some disruption to your plans annoys you but there’s no point getting in a huff. Outside influences cannot be stopped but you are able to keep calm yourself. Rising to the bait will play into someone else’s hands. Although a situation must be dealt with, do it in your own time and in your own way. Allow yourself the pleasure of saying ‘I told you so!’

ASKJA Origin system a name inspired by the true sound of silence found at the Askja volcano system in Iceland.

ASKJA Origin system totally dedicated to pure sound rewards close attention.

THE ASKJA Origin sound system is completely unique, the first ever commercial psychoacoustic audio system. Psychoacoustics is the science that addresses the theory of pure sound emission and also that of sound perception. That is to say; the way we hear and the brain receives sounds and positions it in space. “It addresses the earbrain connection to focus on, what space sounds like.” The ‘enclosures’ or speakers are the result of complex aerodynamic designs which ensure that sound waves go through and bounce without creating vibration. They were developed according to their function and their place in the system in close cooperation with Formal One engineers in Switzerland with long experience in aerodynamics and the use of novel materials including laminated carbon and glass fibre, Kevlar and aramid composite materials. The final result being 24,000 times more sound efficient than wood. Meanwhile the electronic components of the ASKJA

Origin are uniquely designed and handmade by craftsmen in Japan and Denmark. The components are spatially placed into the system to translate the original sound as closely as possible. Connectors and materials that hitherto have only been used in military grade telecommunications to theatre production equipment are employed. Didier Kwak founder of ASKJA once heard that Sergio Pininfarina quoting Enzo Ferrari, “An engine, a car needs to be made of as few parts as possible, so each element is perfectly designed and does not need satellites to correct its function; and above all, the more beautiful an engine can be, the better it works.” In Didier Kwak’s career in film special effects he noted that he was often disappointed with the sound leading eventually to the first ASKJA prototype in 2001 and in due course by the encouragement of musicians, filmmakers and sound engineers to the establishment of ASKJA Audio in Nice, France. In the autumn of 2015

ASKJA Origin’s reveal at that year’s Monaco Yacht Show to rave reviews from all who have had the opportunity to see the system and experience the sound produced. Each ASKJA Origin’s unique spatial immersion transports the listener to the middle of a live performance with each system installed after an acoustic study with on site set up by ASKJA specialists. Setups may be discovered on superyacht and villa. That the ASKJA Origin is technically unique is clear, that any audiophile will no doubt wish to customise the set up in some way and add their own touch to this technical tour de force is a given and fully catered to. The finishing possibilities are impressive with the system available in dozens of different colours and finishes. Polished high gloss or matte painted finishes, inlaid wood marquetry, leather, shagreen and much more. With a price tag that starts in the region of €450,000 the ASKJA Origin system is found in the region of hyper luxury and worth every cent. Nick Horne, London, England

LAMBE-MURPHY THE universe sometimes returns an ex, just to see if you’re still stupid. That’s what happened to me last week, when I was contacted, via WhatsApp chat. There wasn’t so much of a chat, instead, I was asked if I wanted to have sex again. I didn’t bother to reply, I deleted the message and laughed. Apart from the fact that said ex is in Monaco, and I’m in Marbella, the very idea that I wanted to share as much as an espresso, let alone a bed, made my stomach turn. An hour or so later, I was watching a movie and could hear my phone beeping from another room. Eventually, I went to investigate more similar messages, all from the same sender, filed in my phone as ‘Don’t Answer!’ I realised, I’m happy to be single. However, it threw up the question of what I’ll do next. If lockdown is to continue, one way or another, for the foreseeable future, perhaps I should take my friend Raf’s advice, and snoop on the dating apps. It’s a long time since I ventured into the strange world of dating apps, and last time, I recall it was a minefield. So many odd people - some desperate, some angry, some scarily crazy. I’m sure I fit into one of those categories, lord knows which one, but I couldn’t take it seriously. I checked, and so many people, all ready to chat. However, some, like the aforementioned ex, went straight to sex. I know people use apps for hookups, and that’s all good. But, basic, boring people, demanding XXX photos, without offering as much a clear face photo. Come on! Don’t get me wrong, I’m confident, but after nine weeks in lockdown, eating pasta, it would require Mario Testino to take my photos, if I wasn’t going to scare people. Then there are those who insist their photos are recent, even though they are clearly taken at bars, restaurants, or clubs, which have been closed for years. Surely, a recent photo is necessary, if we’re going to move past ‘hello.’ What next, we chat for months before meeting, and when we do, they’ve aged 20 years, gained 15 kilos, and somehow lost their hair? These, are what I call the Corona

STRANGE FEELING: To finally be free. Chameleons - a new breed of online daters, or online fakers, who create a whole new world, and image for themselves, as they know they have little, or no chance of meeting anytime soon. After just one hour of this bizarre world, I decided it wasn’t for me, deleted the apps and opened more wine. Like most, I had really missed my morning run. Admittedly, some days, the only way to move my ass and do it, was to reward myself with breakfast at The Marbella Club afterwards. When the government announced that exercise was permitted, I was like a giddy child at Christmas. So much so, I went to bed early, in order to be ready to go at 6am. My house is directly on the beach, and having spent the last two months staring out to sea, to finally be free was a strange feeling. I ran as fast as I could along the water’s edge, listening to Dimitri from Paris. Breathing the fresh morning air and realising, that the real world is waiting for us. All of nature, having been left alone, now in excessive bloom. Strangers, smiling as we pass. Perhaps, Covid lockdown has been something of a reset button from the universe. Having been locked away, suddenly I notice so many beautiful people running by. Marbella, I salute you. Who needs online, when we have real life? Remember, the universe who sends the ex back into your life, is the same one, who sends you many great opportunities each day. Now is the time to open our eyes, and most certainly our hearts.

WHAT IS THE LAW OF ATTRACTION AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

DIONE LOCKYER LIVING life by the law of attraction seems to be more popular now than it’s ever been. People are starting to dig a little deeper and are seeing miracles happen before their very eyes. But what exactly does the law of attraction mean and how does it work? In simple terms, it enables you to attract anything you desire. You can effortlessly attract Abundance, Wealth, Love, Dream Home - Anything You Can Imagine. Sounds a bit airy fairy doesn’t it? Yes, I thought the exact same when I first heard of it. In fact, my exact words were: what a crock of cr*p! This must be some

14 - 20 May 2020

sort of cult surely? Oh how wrong was I! The more I read, the more intrigued I was to investigate and test the water. Rhonda Byrne, Author of The Secret explains how the law of attraction is like a magnet. Whatever you think and feel, you attract. Like attracts like! Whether you’re vibrating on a high or low frequency is the primary factor determining whether you successfully manifest your dreams. Given how the Law of Attraction works, you magnetically draw (ie attract) things vibrating on the same frequency. These are things that reflect your internal state. This means that if you

work to maintain a high frequency (through positivity, love, compassion, and productivity) then you inevitably end up with more good things in your life. Have you ever woke up in the morning, in a bad mood and then everything for the rest of the day goes badly? That’s the law of attraction! Have you ever run late for work, run around saying to yourself, I can’t be late, I can’t be late! Only then to end up stuck in traffic and late for work? That too is the law of attraction!

DIG DEEP: End up with good things in your life.

It is so easy to set your mind to negative therefore creating more negativity. The good news is, you can change it around!!

If you want your desires to come true, then you HAVE to start your day with one simple step... GRATITUDE! To be truly and genuinely grateful for everything you have, everything you see will bring more of what you want. You want a dream home? Show gratitude for the home you have now. You want the perfect body, show gratitude for the body you have now. Think of your organs and how they keep you alive, think of your brain and how it functions, think of your legs and how it gives you the ability to walk, run, sit and stand. By setting yourself at a

high frequency, there is no choice but to receive the same back. Recently, I put this to the test! I have a private; women’s Facebook group calls THE POSITIVE MINDSET COMMUNITY. It currently has 210 members in there. I started a 28- day challenge of the book ‘The Magic’ by Rhonda Byrne. As we are approaching the end, the results from these women are absolutely incredible. Their vibrations are high, their mind-set is positive AND ... They are attracting their desires. If you want to give this a try, you are more than welcome to join our community and see for yourself. It really IS magical!

If you would like to dig a little deeper into your own thoughts, feelings and behaviours or you would like to complete one of my courses to live a happy and healthy life with yourself, please email me coachingwithdione@gmail.com.

LETTERS FROM CANARIES By Barbara Belt barbarabelt@gmail.com DEAR reader, Hello from La Gomera, the second smallest Canary Island. On May 4, we unlocked into Phase 1, while other islands and Spain started at Phase 0. El Hierro and La Graciosa were also jumpstarted, along with the Balearic island of Formentera. El Hierro, our diminutive neighbour, is 64km west, with 10,000 inhabitants. La Gomera’s small too, with 20,000 islanders. La Graciosa, 480kms NE, is the tiniest, with 745 souls. Mediterranean Formentera, Ibiza’s small neighbour, has 12,000 inhabitants. It’s a great joy here to finally walk the beach, hear children playing and chat to people. Small shops are reopening. Bars and restaurants are trickier. May’s always a quiet month. Everybody closes for main-

A unique attraction

LA GRACIOSA: The main village of Caleta de Sebo. tenance and R&R after the winter season. Opening now for 50 per cent occupancy is unattractive. With 40 per cent of Canarians on government aid, we’re strapped for cash. Tourist accommodation can also open, but there’s no point without tourists.

A quick EWN investigation around the other islands reveals the same, with one notable difference: Formentera’s immediate prospects are better. The Baleares are summer season islands, whereas the Canaries are winter. El Hierro’s Cabildo empha-

sises primary sector export difficulties: “Our fishing fleet and pineapple growers have problems. We’re a long way from everywhere, with no tourists to eat the pineapples and fish!” Marvis Hernández, in dive/fishing village La Restinga, reports: “Only one bar, the Mar de Las Calmas, has opened so far.” Restaurateurs César and Eva, in Her migua, La Gomera, say: “We’ll wait until late May. If national visitors can travel, we’ll open.” La Graciosa Councillor Alicia Páez confirms: “There’s still just a supermarket and a baker’s open here. That’s it for now.” La Gomera boasted the first confirmed Covid-19 case in Spain on January 31. Local authorities moved quickly after the German Embassy notified them that a Ger man tourist was possibly infected. On arrival, he was located, tested positive and isolated.

Since then, Cabildo shutdown policies, with closed airports and ferry ports restricted to merchandise and approved passenger journeys only, have kept the virus out. Small islands are easy to isolate. We’ve had a first in, first out of trouble experience that’s worth noting. Nobody’s in any hurry to welcome untested, international tourists. These three small Canary Islands boast unique attractions. They’re off the beaten, mass tourism track, have extraordinary landscapes and are healthy places with good fresh fish and veg, excellent wines, interesting traditions, good music. They’ll need national tourism to survive until international travel’s possible So don’t despair if you can’t go abroad. Come and explore La Gomera, El Hierro or La Graciosa. You won’t be disappointed.

FRANKLY SPEAKING

BY JULIE FRANK

FOR those of you that know me, you’ll know that I’m very passionate about certain subjects. Injustice being one of them. Racism and bigotry are in there too. I think this could be connected to my condition - Asperger’s Syndrome, that I’ve mentioned in previous articles. The other adult Autistics I have come across seem to share similar feelings regarding fairness and equality. We are thought of as having no empathy too! I strongly disagree with that - we have plenty, too much sometimes. We’re even thought of as aloof. My husband jokingly calls me ‘The Ice Queen’ because he says I’m cold! Well, at least I stay fresh in the summer! We do have emotions, but don’t always show them how you’d expect. There’s many misconceptions about us, I don’t think Rain Man helped either - that damn film! When I tell people I have Asperger’s Syndrome, some presume I’m a mathematical genius. Quite frankly, maths has never even been my strong point!

CHINESE SHOPS: Isn’t there always something we need in them? I also think some of my opinions could come from my family history. My Jewish great grandfather escaped Lithuania before the Holocaust. Had he waited a few years; he probably wouldn’t have survived. As a family we’ve never held racist or bigoted views. I don’t think it’s a coincidence, given what we were told about our heritage.

Something that’s bothering me now is the derogatory language used about Chinese people. I appreciate the government in China have made mistakes regarding Covid19. But I’m seeing some people call for a total boycott of Chinese trade. This even includes the Chinese businesses here in Spain! It’s so unreasonable some Chinese immigrants were here

before us. I fail to see how you can blame people for mistakes a government have made in a country they no longer belong to! This must be a worrying time for them. They must be aware of the hostility. It bothers me to think of people feeling frightened and unwelcome. I think of how terrified the Jewish people in Europe must have been, even before they were persecuted. There were warning signs and that’s why my great grandfather left to settle in the UK. He escaped the same fear, resentment, suspicion and paranoia. This is their home and they are no more responsible for the virus than we are. I for one will continue to use the Chinese shops - isn’t there always something we need in them?! Chinese food is delicious too, I won’t be giving that up in a hurry! Once normal life resumes, I think we should do our best to support everyone in our community, including the Chinese. We’re all in this together. I’m proud to belong to a coast that’s a melting pot of so many races, cultures and interesting people. Long may it continue!

DAVID WORBOYS A FREE press has a huge responsibility to society. In a way, it represents humanity. The editorials, the news reports and business predictions have enormous influence over our opinions, our decisions and our actions. Many investigative articles bring to our attention serious abuse of human rights, crises in health and education, the spread of disease, the threat of hostilities and the scale of corruption. It is said that you can judge a newspaper by its readers’ letters and its editorials. What about its columnists? A popular British weekly newspaper has several good contributors on subjects such as history, economics, sport and politics. On the other hand it has a rather vulgar obsession with celebrities, trivial gossip and, most of all, with wealth. Some

THE MEDIA - THE PRESS contributors prefer pretentious French words, such as ‘bien pensant,’ ‘ennui’ and ‘longeur’ where there is a perfectly acceptable English alternative. Why don’t they write their piece in French? There are two columnists who trash every person and every idea with which they don’t agree. Let’s call them R Large and C Short. As readers, we can only judge those hiding behind their pens by the way they write. R Large can be witty but uses his pen to launch personal attacks on anybody he dislikes or disagrees with. He is tediously predictable in his repeated adulation for Netanyahu and contempt for Diane Abbott, for example. He describes anybody with differing views as idiots or imbeciles. The obese are regarded as ‘lard buckets,’ the misguided as ‘scumbags.’ He has a particular problem with French and Ger mans, the

COLUMNISTS’ PREY: Diane Abbott and Victoria Beckham.

Labour Party and Liberal Democrats. C Short seems a bitter, humourless person whose pen hates everybody. Plain looking, she criticises the appearance of anybody more attractive or successful than she is, which applies to most of the people she denigrates as ‘airheads.’

She seems fascinated by bodily functions from defecation to masturbation and with body fluids and sexual organs. Her favourite words include ‘shagging,’ ‘bum’ and ‘tits.’ Her language reduces the whole concept of sex to something dirty. It seems that, once a columnist takes a disliking to a person or disagrees with

their views, everybody wants to jump on the bandwagon like leeches. Their prey includes Victoria Beckham, Diane Abbott, Megan Markle, Greta Thunberg, Bob Geldof and even Mother Teresa and Princess Diana. Anybody who is either attractive or successful or who does their best to help others or tries in their own way to make the world a better place is fair game. None of these people has harmed anybody. This is not an argument against fact-based criticism. The actions of national leaders such as Duterte, Maduro, and Orban - even Bolsonaro and Trump - may range from brutal persecution to plain misjudgement or incompetence. That, however, does not make them toe-rags! If such intolerant journalists can only launch vicious, unprovoked personal attacks on their subjects, why don’t they pocket their pens?

KIDS CONFUSION

Magic memories

OUR VIEW New values

UP until a month ago, we had become completely accustomed to full, constantly topped up supermarket shelves. We could get whatever we wanted, whenever we wanted it. But did we ever actually stop to consider what it took to produce food or where the constant flow came from? Food had become a commodity we no longer had to fight for, it was readily available. However, when the Coronavirus pandemic slapped the world in the face it put certain things, like the need for food, into perspective. Faced with stripped supermarket shelves, closed bakeries, coffee shops and restaurants, reality bit. Some of those in isolation were robbed of their packaged sandwich breakfast, ready meals from supermarkets and easy alternatives from the kebab shop and had to try something new, cooking from scratch, getting inventive and fending for themselves. In doing so nine out of 10 adults report that they are more aware of how much food they are wasting, and over a third of consumers are throwing out less than before the crisis struck. We are learning to value food as well as learning to value our own abilities to handle change and survive. However, we cannot allow ourselves to become complacent. When we return to normality we must carry over this new respect for food and ultimately our new respect for survival.

Wales extends… Scotland extends and Boris says jolly hop off to the beach leaving shocked expats Pam Newsam Nothing will change, people will still go out, more so than ever now, just wait for the numbers to go up and then see what happens, NHS will be overloaded more than ever in the coming weeks... so god help them all!!

Dear Leapy, Because of lockdown, I'm here in Brighton & Hove with time to tidy up my office. (I used to run a business, now retired.) I’ve just found press cuttings from Euro Weekly News November 2015 and it includes your article about Loose Women. My late husband and I bought a little flat in Villajoyosa back in 1982 and I still go there every April and November. I always get EWN when I’m there and enjoy your articles. I should be there now, of course, a terrific disappointment. I’m just

hoping that everything will be sorted by November! I have a great time in Spain. I love jumping on the bus into Benidorm to see drag shows, comedy, singers, but I’m also the British Patron of Vilamuseu. They have a terrific collection with some unique pieces. My favourite era is the Romans, so I love walking over to the Tower of San Josep, the tallest Roman funerary monument in Spain. To thank me for my support (translations, financial) they named the gardens after me. Have you ever been to Villajoyosa? It’s such a vibrant place, fishing fleet, market, I love it. Are your articles available online? Looking forward to my next visit and getting Euro Weekly News. All the best Elaine Evans

Think twice Dear Euro Weekly, I booked a flight with Ryanair from Alicante to London Gatwick in March. I also booked a hotel and airport parking. I took out Ryanair insurance. The week before I was due to travel I started coughing and felt unwell. On the advice of the Spanish medical contact service, I was advised not to travel, I didn’t. I managed to cancel my hotel and airport parking without any financial loss. I contacted Ryanair insurance provider to advise them, again bef o re m y t r a v e l . N o re s p o n s e t o d a t e . I h a v e emailed them on another two occasions since. Again, no reply. Ryanair is a money-making organisation who think nothing for their customers. The flights were £124.39. Not a great sum but now, as a regular on Ryanair in the past, I would have to think twice about using them again. Regards, Trevor

Boris Names Second World War Heroes ‘The Greatest Generation of Britons That Ever Lived’ Julie Jones Peel Absolutely agree! Shame the millennium generation wasn’t taught about the world wars in history class, they know very little about the horrific sacrifices that were made for their future. I wasn’t taught about the Second World War in school and neither were my now grown up kids, I remember being told it was too soon! Thankfully I had aunts and uncles that would tell me their experiences of the war.

Costa Del Sol Bar Owner In Spain Reveals What He Will Have To Go Through To Reopen Sheree Ruiz Absolutely ridiculous. No business owner can handle those extra costs to begin with especially when coupled with fewer tables/customers. The cost would then need to be passed on to the customer but that would mean significantly higher costs which many customers simply wouldn’t want to pay. I see it as a way to kill off the cafe/restaurant /bar businesses in Spain, not to support them.

Spain’s Benidorm Reopening Bars as Anger Boils Up in Costa Blanca Towns Forced to Keep Tough Lockdown Laws Andy Rayner Elche has two hospitals, which are responsible for many towns as well as the city itself. The hospitals have coped brilliantly, and Elche as a whole has many less cases than other cities... the problem is authorities worry about a spike, meaning that these two hospitals will be overrun... so strangely to many, and as a precaution they have not let Elche or surrounding towns pass. Rightly or wrongly this appears to be what’s happened to us. Caught everyone by surprise because Elche hospitals have only registered 20 deaths and never once was anywhere near overrun… In fact Vinalopo hospital only ever had a handful of cases, and wasn't really used… Elche General had a Covid ward.

A letter from the near future

BARRY DUKE IT’S 2025. I still have a goatee and moustache, but they are no longer immaculately groomed. What’s the point as I am no longer allowed to show my face in public? For this I have to thank Professor Amanda Berk, of England’s Health Protection Agency. She invented a ‘smart’ full face and body covering to avoid repeats of pandemics such as Covid-19. This was immediately adopted by disease control centres across the globe. Clerics representing religions that castigate women for dressing ‘immodestly’ were jubilant after the Berkquarantina - or ‘berka’ for short - was introduced, but they started kicking up holy hell after they realised the gar ment was mandatory for ALL sexes. Human rights activists were also dismayed by the garment, for not only does it have

DRAG QUEEN: Set fire to her wig.

BERKAS: Fashion junkies took over. an in-built tracking device but also technology that monitors all bodily functions and relays them to ‘Big Brother’ police and health agencies. Anyone not wearing the ‘berka’ outdoors are rounded up by hooded Human Disease Tracking Force members and are subjected to draconian fines and lengthy periods of confinement. When ‘berkas’ were made mandatory on April 1, 2025, fashion junkies saw an opportunity to fancify them with things like ribbons, bows and sequins. But after famous Benidor m drag queen Miss

Bacardi Breezer set fire to her wig after accidentally jamming a sewing needle into one of the garment’s electrical circuits, that trend ceased immediately. Later, fashion houses were given per mission to make more stylish ‘berkas.’ The downside was that, while the jet-black garment was handed out free, glitzy ones came at a price. For example, a Jean-Paul Gaultier number encrusted with diamonds - debuted with a price tag of €40m and was immediately snapped up by Melania Trump.

The biggest problem posed by ‘berkas’ was at airports. Noone could get past security without the electronic circuits in the linings triggering alarms. Initially passengers were required to strip naked in special booths but this led to lengthy delays, with some passengers having to check in 24 hours before their fights. This problem was overcome when airlines, at the cost of billions, developed individual sealed pods into which passengers were placed after being given injections to put them into varying periods of hibernation.

But after several elderly folk could not be revived after their flights, and lawsuits were filed by their families, the airlines restricted flights to people under 50 who needed to show they had no health issues, including verrucas and ingrown toenails. They also had to sign forms declaring that carriers could not be held liable for pod deaths or permanent comas. Another function of the ‘berka’ is to ensure a continuation of social distancing. If one comes closer than two metres to another human, a taser-like mechanism will come into play, and both parties get a warning electrical shock. Those who hug will be shocked into unconsciousness by higher voltages. When a member of the Human Disease Tracking Force arrived to hand over my ‘berka’ and closely watched me wriggle into it, I quipped ‘does my bum look big in this?’ He snapped: ‘Sir, if I had a euro for every time I’ve heard that, I’d be a very rich man.’

“WE are getting closer to the true definition of a superhero…” commented one Banksy fan on the elusive artist’s Instagram account next to an image of his latest work, a tribute to NHS workers created for staff at the Southampton General Hospital. The predominantly black and white painting, entitled Game Changer, shows a small boy kneeling next to discarded Batman and Spiderman figures and clutching instead a new NHS nurse superhero doll, complete with face mask. With her outstretched arm and billowing cape, she looks just like an action hero off to fight evil. The painting is now on display in a foyer near the hospital’s emergency department. Banksy left a note for the staff, saying: “Thanks for all you’re doing. I hope this brightens the place up a bit, even if it’s only black and white.” The painting will remain at the hospital until the autumn, when it will go under the hammer to raise funds for NHS charities.

GESTURE: “Thanks for all you’re doing. I hope this brightens the place up a bit,” the elusive artist wrote in a note for the Southampton hospital staff.

PRIME MINISTER Boris Johnson said in his speech on Sunday, May 10 that Britain would introduce a 14-day quarantine for passengers flying into the country, which would mean that visitors would have to remain at a single address. Willie Walsh told MPs that there “was nothing positive in the address” from Johnson, and added that he would need to review plans to resume flights. Walsh is the chief executive of BA and Iberia’s parent group, IAG, and speaking to the House of Commons Transport Select Committee, he said quarantine would make

matters worse for travellers. “We had been planning to resume - on a pretty significant basis - our flying in July. I think we’d have to review that based on what the Prime Minister said on Sunday.” Other carriers like easyJet and Ryanair have condemned the quarantine plans, and Walsh said that the development made no sense as it was important to get the UK economy moving again. He also believed there was a strange inconsistency: “I think the air passenger quarantine is a surprise as similar measures are not in place for other forms of international travel.”
