A SMALL but significant sense of normality is being restored in Spain as the gover nment eases the lockdown and allows millions of ‘non-essential’ workers back to work. The move comes as Spain records its lowest number of Covid-19 cases in three weeks, falling to 3,477. Construction, factory and shipyard workers can return to work after a fortnight ban, as can cleaners, sanitation and security employees among others. Ghostly quiet towns and cities will see more activity as an estimated 1.7 million people head back to work. Supermarkets are noticeably busier after closures for the Easter period, while shoppers are still taking recommended precautions, and there appears to be a rise in road traffic. Though the lift of the ‘industrial lockdown’ has been welcomed by many, there are concerns it’s still too early. The President of the Catalan government, Quim Torra, is not in favour of Spain’s executive’s decision, but with no power to block the move, put forward a plan to ease a potential
negative impact. Some of these measures include checking the temperatures of workers twice a day, with the health services alerted in any case of an increase in temperature. On Monday morning, police in Madrid were handing out protective

The Catalan government intends to stagger movements by introducing shifts and to provide workers who may come into close contact with each other with personal protection equipment. These precautionary measures may well be adopted across the country.

Age Care updates you AGE CARE ASSOCIATION is certainly living up to its name with the two to three times a week phone calls checking up on nearly 200 members, to the weekly shopping and trips to the pharmacy, the online chat room and the biweekly bulletin updates. The Client Information volunteer continues to arrange and re-arrange hospital and clinic appointments: with over 20 volunteers/drivers we are able to provide these services. Age Care depends entirely on the two shops in Calahonda for its funding, which now, of course, are closed. Madrid madman NATIONAL POLICE in Madrid arrested a bare-chested man after he went on a violent rampage in the Madrid neighbourhood of Moratalaz. Several police vehicles took a battering as the Spaniard smashed their windscreens and bonnets with two Samurai swords. The crazed man had to be boxed in by police vans before being overpowered by officers after disobeying orders to put down his weapons. Police were alerted by paramedics and sources claimed the man had fled hospital after falling ill with sus-
pected coronavirus. Riot squad officers had to be brought in to help in the arrest and are said to have fired two gunshots into the air before they managed to get him to the ground and cuff him. A spokesman for Spain’s National Police confirmed at the time: “Officers have arrested a man this afternoon after after he threatened officers with two katanas. He is in custody and will face a fine for breaching lockdown orders as well as charges which will include resisting arrest.”

WhatsApp scam THE Cartama Town Hall wants to warn the public that there is a false message circulating on WhatsApp among Cartama residents in which there is talk of permits to be able to walk and travel through urban roads and green areas. Specifically, the message states the following: ‘El Ayto de Cártama permitirá a partir del Lunes el poder pasear y transitar vias Urbanas y zonas verdes. Se Irán aplicando a más zonas paulatina-
mente... Se podrá de max grupos de two personas con mascarillas y guardando la separación recomendable de 2mts entre si. Siempre provistos del DNI y con tarjeta de residentes. ANIMO QUE YA QUEDA MENOS.’ It is believed that this hoax has already been reported to the competent authorities and residents are warned they should not pay attention to this type of information that comes from non-official sources.
Free legal assistance THE Governing Board of the Malaga Bar Association has agreed to offer free legal assistance on matters related to the coronavirus crisis. The dean, Francisco Javier Lara, said the Lawyers' Association “cannot turn its back on society, especially on citizens in a situation of vulnerability, in the face of a catastrophe such as the present one.” The initiative is aimed at people who benefit from Free Justice, non-governmental non-profit organisations (NGOs) and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that prove insufficient resources and have their registered office in region. And the Bar Association of Malaga will encourage institutions to join the scheme. Legal assistance will be provided on the matters most affected by the current situation, including labour, criminal, family, civil, gender violence, contentious-administrative, foreigners, prison and commercial. Members of the public, NGOs or SMEs can request advice by sending an e-mail to consultacovid19@icamala ga.es. They must provide: name and surname, ID card/NIE/Passport, full address, telephone number, email address, subject and a brief description of the query. Once it has been verified they meet the requirements, the Bar will put the defendant in contact with an appropriate lawyer. Lawyers can also be helped during the crisis.

Sister saviours KARA JAYE CARADAS first moved to Spain from London when she visited on holiday with her twin sister Charley when they were 17 years old. The pair loved it so much they just couldn’t go back. Euro Weekly News think the residents on the Costa del Sol are pretty lucky Kara made that decision as it led to her becoming one of our local heroes. Kara started charity work here in Spain when she was just 19 years old, walking dogs for Ace Charity dog shelters. She would go straight from working nights in a club to the shelter to make sure she could walk all their dogs. Her love of man’s best friend led her to foster some of the many abandoned
puppies and strays on the coast, some of whom she has even bottle-fed from just a few days old. Kara says she has four dogs at home at the moment “I’ve raised about 120 to date!” Her kindness isn’t only targeted at her furry friends “I started buying Christmas presents for kids in local orphanages and poor families six years ago which turned into Costa Christmas Collections. “I now have big fundraisers and helpers along the coast who collect donations in their premises that we distribute to all the orphanages at Christmas time,” said the big-hearted beauty. “Also, we found out that when the orphans reach 18 and are from other countries they can’t get the help they
need, so we started employing them at The Boardwalk training them as chefs, getting them apartments and their driver’s licence!” The Boardwalk is the successful bar and restaurant that Kara opened five years ago with Charley where they regularly throw huge fundraising parties. Kara is the backbone of a current initiative along with Charley, her other sister Penny and their friends collecting and buying food and delivering it to the elderly and disadvantaged families on the coast during the crisis. The obvious heroes are on the front line: the medical staff working tirelessly every day to tend to the ill. Other recognised heroes are the police officers, cleaners and supermarket workers. However, we also have heroes within our communities who dedicate their time in confinement to help battle the virus in their own way. Isabel Mellado, a resident in Benalmadena has taken to her sewing machine to help resolve the lack of face masks. Isabel began making face masks when a delivery driver who often brought packages to her street arrived every day without any protective gear. When asked why he was wearing no protection, he stated that the company
could not provide any for him. After countless YouTube videos, Isabel began to create fabric-based masks to give out to delivery drivers and neighbours. Although these cannot be used for medical purposes, they offer an added layer of protection to those leaving their homes on a regular basis. Isabel had to get creative when making these masks, as both masks and the materials needed to make them are hard to find. The masks are made with tea towels, the elastic has been repurposed from socks or items of clothing, and sanitary towels double as changeable filters which are placed in a pocket of the mask. She has also made smaller sized masks for children and intends to distribute these by word-of-mouth to delivery drivers, neighbours and whoever else is in need.

Laser Tests For Covid-19 SPANISH medical researchers are looking at the use of laser technology to spot if people have the coronavirus. The Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2) has been running six laboratory demonstrations in a long-term project to see if lasers can detect cancer cases and other bacterial infections. Those tests have been promising and scientists believe that once prototypes have been successfully put through their paces, they hope

within a year. Professor Laura Lechuga, from the ICN2
said: “Our detector box is user-friendly with a minimal amount of operating knowledge needed. It could be widely used by doctors and nurses to test patients." The concept is all done by photonics, which focuses on the properties of light, and would bring an instant test result. According to the scientists, their system is allegedly more reliable than the currently used finger-prick testing kit for Covid-19, which has caused some disagreement over the reliability of the test results.
Drug trials
THE Covid-19 health crisis has created a high demand for drug trial approvals. In the last month, the Agencia Española del Medicamento has received some 120 “intentions of interest,” says César Hernández, head
of the department of Medicamentos de Uso Humano. Of these, 35 have been specified in the formal presentation of a document, of which 21 have already been approved and are in progress. In addition, permission has been given to carry out another 57 observational studies. Hernández points out that of the 120 initiatives some will never come to fruition, but others will become trials. In certain cases, if they worked with the same idea, they have been asked to group together. "It is more interesting that they come together, that there are fewer but larger initiatives so that it does not happen as in China, where many trials were carried out with so few people that the results have not been useful," says the specialist. For Hernández, the high number of initiatives is good for everyone: it encourages research in Spain, allows groups to gain experience and take advantage of the great potential of Spanish public health, which, due to its universal access and technical level, is traditionally a good participant in large-scale trials. In this case, there are also many affected, which makes it much easier to get volunteers.

Billionaires barred POLICE wait to intercept a private jet full of billionaires and young woman trying to get to a £50,000 a night villa in France during the Coronavirus lockdown The party of 10, three businessmen, three young women and various staff, were planning to fly by helicopter to a stunning £60 million villa called Alang Alang where they would stay during the Covid-19 pandemic.

But customs and police officers barred them from stepping off the jet and ordered them to return to the UK following a three-hour standoff on the tarmac. A member of the travelling party said they were not holidaymakers but three billionaires on their way to the cliffside villa to complete a business deal that would have created over 900 jobs. He claimed the others
in the party were bodyguards, a secretary and translators. The businessman would not give any further details but said the trip had been booked days in advance with airport authorities and blamed the French authorities for being ‘stupid.’ “The businessman claimed the failure of the project would mean 994 jobs would not be created.
Google ban Zoom GOOGLE has banned video chat app Zoom from its employees’ laptops because of security and privacy concerns about the way the app works. It is the latest major company to stop using the app. While it has surged in populari-
ty, those extra users have brought increased scrutiny to the app’s many security and privacy failings. Many, including the British prime minister, Boris Johnson, have been using Zoom during the coronavirus crisis. US President Trump often used to call the PM with Zoom, not any
more. Zoom has been criticised for leaking its users’ information, making it relatively easy for people to engage in ‘zoombombing’ and crash into meetings, and failing to keep to promises that conversations are end-to-end encrypted to keep them private and secure.

POLICE arrested a wild naked woman in Torremolinos after jumping onto a police car. She was arrested twice after bypassing the quarantine rules set by the State of Alarm. The first arrest happened on Sunday and after the National Police took her statement she was released. Minutes after being released, the woman pro-

ceeded to take off all her clothes and jump onto a police car, which again, required officers to arrest her. She was seen climbing onto the official vehicle and began shouting insults. Many neighbours were alarmed at the situation that had arisen on the local streets. Police officers managed to get her off the car and arrested her once again.
Bomb scare
POLICE were forced to evacuate a supermarket in Alhaurin de la Torre after a bomb was found in a bin in front of the store. The drama began when the Guardia Civil in Benemerita received a call from a member of the public who said he had found what appeared to be an explosive device when he went to dispose of some rubbish.
Officers arrived and discovered there was indeed a device of some kind inside the bin and, as a precaution, the supermarket was evacuated. Specialists in explosives deactivation (Tedax) of La Benemerita were called in to remove the weapon. The mortar shell is believed to date from the Civil War, and an investigation is underway to find out its origin and identify the person who left it in the bin.

FOOD DONATIONS: For families who are at risk of social exclusion. MARBELLA Town Hall, through the Sports and Social Rights delegations, has launched the ‘Canal Solidario,’ an initiative that offers sports clubs the possibility of donating nonperishable food during
the State of Alarm to families who are at risk of social exclusion. The collections are being coordinated by the municipal councils and the different clubs and the beneficiaries are the Cruz Roja, Bancosol and Cáritas,
which are also in charge of carrying out the delivery of products among the families. The first donation was made by C D Los Compadres, who delivered 300 kilos of food to Cáritas de El Calvario.
Feria cancelled THE decision has not yet been formally made, but it is assumed by the political leaders of the town hall that Marbella will not hold their celebrations for the San Bernabé Feria, which had been scheduled for the week of Monday June 8 to Sunday June 14. Due to the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, it has led the government team to assume that the celebrations to mark the arrival of summer will not be held. The last time the San Bernabé Feria was interrupted was during the Civil War and were resumed in 1940. This year's suspension due to the Coronavirus will therefore be the first one in 80 years.

Coronavirus Crisis: How Does it Affect Rentals and Mortgage Loans in Spain? THE Covid-19 or ‘Corona Virus’ has brought about new situations of potential legal conflict that we could have not even imagined before. With shops closing temporarily, airlines and hotels coming to a complete standstill and the curfew affecting the mobility of people, the fulfilment of thousands of contracts is now in question by reasons well beyond the particular circum-
stances of the intervening parties. So can the parties pull out, suspend, adapt or terminate contracts of continuous performance? Royal Decree 8/2020 of March 17, Article 25 has not dealt with the consequences of the Corona outbreak, save for a moratorium on mortgage loans for those classed as vulnerable. Málaga tibus is the legal doctrine allowing for a contract or a treaty to become inapplicable because of a fundamental change of circumstances. This is similar to force majeure but touches on fairly distinct considerations: • There is incident of such magnitude that alters the bases of the contract • Such incident frustrates the ‘commercial sense’ of the contract and • Breaks the balance of a contract and produces damage to one party due to supervening circumstances that could not have been contemplated in the contract or are alien to normal contractual risk analysis. The consequence of applying these principles would be that the contract gets ‘frozen’ in time, suspended of its effects for the parties. The downside to any impending legal conflict is the time and expense of a court procedure, unless parties to a contract can reach individual agreements in the wake of what is an unprecedented situation. Mortgage Loans
The moratorium offered by the government will only apply to borrowers that are deemed to be in a situation of vulnerability, and this will happen only if (all) of the following occur: • The property must be the main dwelling. • To be unemployed or if self-employed, to have lost at least 40 per cent of the sales. • The combined income of the family should not exceed €1,600 (three times the IPREM). • And only if the loan repayment is over 35 per cent of the net income. The documents and procedures the state will require are family book, tax certificate confirming the reduction of activity, property deeds and once this has been reviewed by the bank, it needs to be ratified before a Notary Public. For mortgage loans not contemplated by the Royal Decree 8/2020 of March 17, Article 25, the above noted civil law principles on rental contracts could be applied here too. Confinement comforts AS the nation is forced to stay indoors amid the coronavirus pandemic, it is hardly surprising sales of alcohol and tobacco have soared since the coronavirus outbreak. Social media is awash with images of trolleys stacked high with beer and other alcoholic beverages, as shoppers prepare for a lengthy lockdown, and tobacco sales have shot up. Whether it is to battle the boredom or as a coping mechanism, experts say the reality is alcohol and tobacco consumption is on the rise, presenting its own health, psychological and social issues. Some countries have gone so far as to ban the purchase of alcohol amid fears of a rise in domestic violence. The World Health Organisation has dubbed drinking to deal with stress an ‘unhelpful coping strategy,’ highlighting the fact alcohol is a toxic and psychoactive substance with dependence producing properties, and contributes to three million deaths each year globally. In Spain, the sale of beer rose by 77.65 per cent in the first week of April with respect to the previous week, while wine jumped by 62.7 per cent and alcoholic drinks by 36.58 per cent, according to a study in the consumer magazine Inforetail, which is supported by the Spanish Association of Distributors, Self-Service Stores and Supermarkets (Asedas). The hike since the government announcement is believed to be because people are limited to the number of visits they can make to supermarkets, and therefore buy more each trip, as well as boredom. With regards to tobacco, sales have shot up. But the industry points out this does not necessarily mean more people are smoking, it could indicate smokers are stocking up in

preparation for several more weeks in lockdown. The biggest tobacco producers have recorded huge sales in the first quarter of 2020. So far this year, Marlboro is by far the most valuable tobacco brand of choice in the world, with a brand value of almost €30.5 billion. L&M, which ranked second, is worth €5.5 billion. Sales of tobacco products in
the UK increased by 9 per cent in the third week of March compared to the same period in 2019, according to global data analysis firm, Nielsen. The rise is in contrast with a 1 per cent fall in the 12 months to March, compared with the same period a year earlier, as health-conscious smokers reportedly quit or switched to reduced-risk products such as vaping devices and oral tobacco. Meanwhile other industries in Spain face an uncertain future. Prior to the coronavirus crisis, estimates put revenue from Spain’s domestic sex trade at €24.5 billion a year, with an estimated workforce of 300,000 and hundreds of licensed brothels. But the industry faces ruin, with the vast majority of sex workers left ‘out on the streets’ without much support. Unlike regular employees, most sex workers won’t benefit directly from the package of loans the government or financial assistance for the self-employed. Around 90 female workers at one of Europe’s biggest brothels, Paradise, in La Jonqera, Gerona, literally found themselves on the street when the venue closed its doors on March 13, amid strict State of Alar m measures. Club owner, José Moreno, has reportedly filed for the temporary layoff scheme ERTE, which affects 69 employees, but none of these are sex workers. Moreno told El Pais “two months of closure means ruin, we’ve survived so far, but we’ll see what happens from now on.” A GoFundMe page has been set up on behalf of OTRAS Union to support sex workers in Spain, ‘who are still in danger’ and left to fend for themselves. They have raised €4,450 of their €14,000 since March 25.

CATALAN Socialist and former Spanish Minister Josep Borrell who now holds a senior position in the European Union has said that nationalisation is not a dirty word. He argues that in the current state of fiscal emergency, it is per fectly in order for EU member states to temporarily take over companies which are struggling to continue to trade, if they seem to be likely to have long term prospects once the crisis is over. Putting Spanish money into Bankia for example was a form of nationalisation.

LEGALLY SPEAKING Must president be a member? The president of our community of 35 properties has been in office for 20 years and now asks at the AGM for someone to relieve him, but his requests have been in vain. Can the names of all residents be ‘put in the hat,’ and the selected person must take office? Many members are of ill health and others only visit here for three months at a time. Is it possible to pay a nonmember of the community to serve as president? Our administrator says that Spanish law requires that the community presi dent must be an owner. Is this correct? If a name is drawn out of the hat, can that person refuse to serve without con sequence? M S (Costa del Sol) Yes, the law says that a community YOU AND THE president must be LAW IN SPAIN a member of the community. A per son elected president is required to serve unless he can convince a court judge that he is unable to do so. Per haps you could reach an understanding with your admin istrator to take on extra duties in exchange for an in crease in his fees. This would ease the burden on the president.

Diageo pay dividend THERE’S money in the black stuff but that’s not just oil as owners of Guinness, Diageo have decided to buck the trend by paying a good dividend to their shareholders.
This goes very much against the grain of other large organisations which have cancelled or postponed theirs but Diageo are paying 27.41p per share held.
More than 50 per cent of Guinness sales are made in pubs and bars, but whilst that revenue is lost, there has been an increase in sales through stores and supermarkets.

With thousand dying by the day and millions more infected, we are still getting the purveyors of piffle stringing numbers together in an effort to convince us that these amounts of people would have died anyway! Just what planet are they on? For heavens and sanity’s sake, why don’t they all crawl back into their dens of flat earth fantasy and leave those with even a modicum of common sense to face up to reality and get this devastating conflict over with? Rest assured, somewhere out there will also be morons blaming the whole pandemic on some alien attack or other. Ah well, takes all sorts. It’s not only the present situation I find worrying, it’s the aftermath that will see our mental and financial resources stretched to the very limits. I think we need to prepare ourselves for a steep rise in divorce

rates, rampant mental issues, family breakdowns and harrowing tales of personal tragedies. Millions of jobs will have been lost, a multitude of businesses will have crashed and we will undoubtedly experience a re-
cession far worse than any we have seen in the past. There will be soup kitchens on the street with food banks and accommodation for the homeless in greater demand than ever. Hopefully we will avoid rioting and looting in our streets
but don’t hold yer breath! On the positive side there will be tales of valour, victory, sacrifice and succour. The human race is a remarkable phenomena and I believe this horrendous experience will make us far stronger and closer together. Recognising our own fallibilities, will, I feel make us completely rethink our priorities and recognise just how fragile our physical being can be. I think we will be more caring for each other, more attentive to environmental issues and certainly more appreciative of our services and medical workers. Although money will obviously be a major concern, I believe people will have realised that wealth, position and worldly goods mean nothing to a bane that can desecrate the human race in a heartbeat and certainly has no respect whatsoever for material power or wealth. This whole terrifying experience
has been an enormous wake up call. It’s time to step back and smell the flowers. Time to take a long hard look at ourselves and say hello to the neighbours. An opportunity for those, who will undoubtedly continue trying to segregate and undermine our societies, to be shown once and for all they will not be tolerated - with firm measures implemented to prevent them doing so. The one certainty in all this is that our existence as we know it will never be the same again. We must all take this chance to rethink, replenish our resolve and begin to create a new world order of peace, love and respect for our fellow man. OUR lives are being shaped by coronavirus. It’s controlling everything we do thanks to the current lockdown. And self-isolation can affect people in different ways. Writers like me are used to sitting for hours alone at a computer so isolation isn’t such a problem. (And when lockdown’s over, there’ll undoubtedly be a flurry of new books on the market due to the enforced confinement.) Coincidentally, my just-published thriller, ‘No Safe Place’ (could just as easily have been called ‘Lockdown’) concerns isolation or lockdown not from a virus but - spoiler alert - something else! This novel was started over a year ago before any hint of

And the isolation it depicts doesn’t arise from health and safety concerns, but for quite different reasons. Something that’s puzzled and intrigued me for decades and I needed to explore in this latest book. And, yes, you guessed, the reasons concern a criminal act. Crime fiction, after all, is my passion. Triggered initially by the study of criminal law for a JD (Juris Doctor) law degree decades ago in Los Angeles (winning the Moot Court Prize a surreal Perry Mason-type experience) where I lived for a number of eventful years. Caring together CUDECA Hospice has launched the #CaringTogether campaign to let people know about the work being done to care for people at the end of life and to send a positive message of support to the community. Cudeca has created a video with a message aimed at patients, families, care teams, other workers, volunteers and the public in general: it shows various people passing a ‘Caring Together’ sunflower from hand to hand to show the importance of care at the end of life, in these very difficult times. The message of the ‘Caring Together Campaign’: We were born to care for others and stay with those who need us most, until the end, and now more than ever we must continue to do so when they are at their most vulnerable. We are keeping our clients connected A S a l e a d i n g Te l e c o m munications provider in Spain, Telitec has a duty to keep operating in order to facilitate communications during the coronavirus crisis. (Article 18 of Royal Decree 463/2020). Therefore we have implemented various steps to maintain our networks and to keep clients connected, whilst at the same time taking all steps to ensure the safety of our team and anyone that is necessary that we come into contact with. We had actually put procedures in place before the virus existed to allow a relatively easy transition for the majority of our staff to work
from home and to maintain customer service. This has been testing for the whole team at Telitec and in part working from home has required self-discipline which all the staff at Telitec have embraced. We are determined that our clients at least know that they will be able to stay in contact with their loved ones through our internet and all other for ms of communications we provide. Our customer service team have even taken upon themselves to contact frequently any client that they know is alone, which speaks volumes for the ethos and quality of the team. Everyone has played their part and I am very proud of
how they have all risen to this unprecedented challenge. This is not something any of us thought we would see in our lifetime, it has been devastating to Spain and the world. On a personal note I can feel and see a difference in the way people are viewing life. Adjusting to what is really important, caring for those less fortunate, creating a community spirit and applauding those, like the health workers who are putting their lives at risk each day to save lives. I only hope that when we come out the other end and life returns to normality that we maintain those beliefs. Please stay safe.

DO I DETECT AN ACCENT? GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY JUST before the lockdown restrictions became our way of life, I found myself, perhaps sub-consciously going into slow down mode. As if my mind and body could already sense a change was coming, and without realising it, I started moving at a far slower pace. I recall on March 12, I cancelled all appointments and RSVP’d ‘no,’ to all upcoming engagements. For the first time in years, I had no flights booked, and no packing to do usually I travel between Milan, Monaco and Marbella each month. As a first, I had an empty diary and a sense of freedom. Freedom that I hadn’t realised would soon be taken away. During these days before isolation, I became something of a beach hippy. Marbella, unlike other places, is relatively quiet at this time of year, so I spent my days trying the various chiringuitos, from Playa Los Monteros to Cabopino. Some fantastic, whilst others should be ashamed of the mess they operate. After a few days of beach lifestyle, and a number of long, sunny lunches, I finally made it to the far end of East Marbella, to a great spot, Simbad. A place I look forward to returning to, once the outside world reopens. At lunch, as I sipped a glass of wine and stared out to sea, an English man at the next table, leaned in to say he recognised me from my column and asked how lunch was going. He seemed a nice sort - middle aged, well-dressed and smiling. I replied to let him know that both my choices were perfect. He looked strangely, before asking, do I detect an accent? I have to admit, it did make me laugh. An accent, what on earth do you mean? I asked, although it was clear what he meant. By my accent, he was of course referring to the fact that I wasn’t from the UK. That’s one thing I have noticed since moving to Spain, those from England feel that anyone without a similar accent, is the odd one out. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’ve nothing against people from the UK, or in fact anywhere, but I did feel the need to point something out. This is Europe, a
BEACH HIPPY: Sipping a glass of wine. place where many nationalities blend together and the only ones with the accent are the non-nationals, of whichever given country we visit. He stared blankly, as if offended, before proceeding to list the statistics of how many UK expats there are on the Costa, and how important they are to the local economy etc. My accent is somewhat neutral, having lived in London, Italy, Monaco and now Spain. In fact, I am sometimes asked where m from, as my accent can sound quite mixed up. When he learned that Im Irish, he went on to crack pretty stupid jokes about the Irish accent and asked me to say things such as 33, to see if I could pronounce it correctly. Naturally, I declined his odd request. It was after about 10 minutes of his now intrusion, that I explained I have trouble understanding most accents from the UK, and while he was finding his evaluation of the Irish accent hilarious, I suggested he look at some of the bizarre accents of his own people. He didn’t find that too funny. I finished lunch and walked back along the beach, stopping when a lady wished to say hello to my dog, Henry. Isn’t it a beautiful evening, she exclaimed, with a posh London accent. Innit though, I replied with a wink. Try to stay strong, and remember, we will lunch again. Once the restaurants reopen, we must dress up and go out. So many of these bars and restaurants, have supported so many worthy local causes, to keep spirits strong during these tough days. When, we are free again, let’s make a huge effort to support our local businesses.

DEAR Euro Weekly, Thank god (‘scuse the pun) you still graced us with some Easter news and ideas. I was so worried it was all going to be brushed under the carpet this year. We have two young children and normally make a big deal of getting up and having hot cross buns, painting eggs and then taking the kids out to roll them down the hill. The kid’s section you did was a good idea as we are running out of ideas for them so we dipped dyed the eggs and hid them around the house instead. I tried to make hot cross buns, but am no Mary Berry, they were a bit hard. I hope all the readers managed to have a lovely time too, even if it was just Skyping their families or watching Easter films. Happy (belated) Easter. Suzie Bellows Marbella

OUR VIEW Keeping control MILLIONS of people around the world, sheltering in their homes from the coronavirus, have turned to communications platforms like Zoom, Facebook Messenger, Skype and Instagram in order to work or stay connected to friends and family. Some aren’t willingly surrendering their online identities during this pandemic, many are being compelled to do so by their schools, family or work. For those fortunate enough to have laptops and reliable broadband internet at home, it is not sufficient to simply update privacy policies or customer agreements. Technology companies see an opportunity in this crisis. Verily, a division of Google’s parent company requires a Google account to find and arrange Coronavirus testing and says it may share your personal health information with third parties. Parents seeking a remedy for their children’s boredom could be forgiven for not poring over lengthy privacy policies before connecting them with grandparents on video chat or entertaining them with a few hours of streaming YouTube videos. Many companies make it exceedingly difficult to opt-out of data collection, burying permissions deep on their websites or frequently changing privacy policies that dictate how and how often personal information can be harvested. Once you start using some services it can also be hard to stop, particularly if your files or photos are stored there. It may be tempting for corporations to see their increasing numbers as a sign of long-term prosperity, but consumers need the option to delete user profiles after the crisis. People have lost control over a lot as a result of the coronavirus. At least they should be able to control what happens to their personal data.

Human rights Dear Euro Weekly News, We are writing to you today out of desperation as extremely worried and concerned family and friends of the foreign inmates in Alhaurin de la Torre penitentiary. Since the Coronavirus pandemic arrival in Spain, no safety measures have been put in place in the jail to try to stop the spread of the deadly virus. The guards work on a daily basis without basic precautionary measures such as masks and gloves and prisoners are not able to keep the recommended safe distance from each other. There have been no tests for those showing severe symptoms, nor for those with underlying health conditions that are high-risk. There is literally no basic hygiene for at all. They are limited to nine showers per 130 inmates, to which only around six are working on most wings. something as simple as hot water to wash their hands is surely a basic human right. I would also like to state that Alhaurin is a holding jail mainly for inmates who have not yet been charged for their alleged crimes. New inmates are still coming into Alhaurin who could be contaminating inmates. We don’t have any other options right now. Our lawyers are pleading with courts and officials for information and appeals are simply being ignored in the majority of cases. We are not asking them to simply be let free. IF there’s one non-essential problem that’s come out of self-isolation, it’s managing your eyebrow hairs, and if you like yours preened and polished, you’ll need to take matters into your own hands. Here is a quick guide for eyebrow care at home. To begin, clearly define your boundaries with a concealer pencil to create a parameter of where you don’t want to touch the brows and to mark the point in the brow for the start, middle and finish.
To avoid hair breakage, gently stretch your skin, grabbing your brow hair by the root and plucking in the direction of hair growth. When you get to the arch of the brow, remove one hair at a time and view your brows before you continue to avoid overplucking. You may then trim longer brow hairs, brush up with a brow tamer and snip any hairs poking above the brow line. As for aftercare, brow gels are best for offering a subtle amount of colour as they only coat the brow hairs, while brow pencils are great for a more defined look.
Mental exercise AS Coronavirus continues to spread, a long period of isolation may well be a necessary measure for public health, but it could also have a detrimental impact on people’s mental health. So, what should you do
if your mental health is suffering during self-isolation? One of the main problems is that we start to miss ‘micro-lifts’ that we normally have throughout our day, such as going into your favourite coffee shop or seeing a friend. When you’re alone at home that doesn’t happen and the cumulative effect of that is massive. So instead we need to create micro-lifts, something that generates a sense of achievement like a new exercise or learning a language. You should try to exercise in the home as much as
possible. Our physical health and mental health are linked so try to create a routine that includes some physical exercise. Although in the short term it can feel nice to be lazy, in the long term this isn’t going to be good for your mental well-being. As far as possible, try to maintain as much of a routine as you can. Wake up and go to bed at healthy times to ensure you get enough sleep. Find some time to still have value to your day, life cannot be just eating and sleeping. Do something fun for yourself.
DATING isn’t easy at the best of times, without the several different challenges that come with dating with a mental health disorder. The big one, though, and I mean it’s the big question we ask ourselves before we even go on that first date, well I do! When do I tell him I have bipolar ?!?! I mean, when is the right time to drop the bombshell? Is there even a right time ? Is there a set timeline? Is it on the fourth date, is it when things are beginning to get serious ..? Do I just tell him casually over dinner? Do I make a big announcement ? I don’t think there is a manual or ‘the right way’ or ‘right time’ to tell someone, it has to be when you feel comfortable enough to disclose something so personal to you, the timing is up to you, it’s not about feeling ashamed, and it’s normal to worry what their reaction may be. The caution is understandable. We watch Movies and Series that show us dating someone with a mental health disorder to be ‘crazy,’ ‘psycho,’ ‘undatable,’ ‘unpredictable’… the list could go on!
With all that said I believe the right person, it should go without saying, will accept you for who you are and the diagnosis you come with. If a person criticises your condition or refuses to understand it, needless to say, you need to get rid! They are not the one for you! But you know what…! Better you tell them early on and find out their reaction than during a bad episode and then having to deal with that on top of things. But actually tell them... it’s important. Because eventually, if things do work out for you both, you will need to have a conversation about what you might need from them or what they might need expect from you. If they don’t want to date you because they can’t handle it, that’s fine, but it’s unfair on both of you if they are forced to make that decision while you are ill. But whatever you do… don’t do what I did and when he did try to talk to me about it, tell him to eff off and then wonder why he did, in fact, eff off!! GET OVER YOURSELF!
LOCKYER A S TAT E M E N T t h a t m o s t find hard to digest and become defensive over, yet it’s something that we all need to do! Negativity is so easy to spread and whilst we are going through the experience of lockdown and the Coronavirus, people are reacting to fear and frustration, which in turn follows negative behaviour. As a person, I would like you to take a deep look at yourself and your thoughts, feelings and behaviours over the last week or two. If you are on social media, how many times have you voiced your opinion on the Coronavirus, the government or the lockdown without facts? What has been the content of your conversations on social media or with family and friends? Have you shown

YOUR CHOICE: You can control your emotions, thoughts and feelings.
anger? Have you shared sadness? Here is where I say, we all need to GET OVER OURSELVES! You cannot control anything or anyone outside of you, you can only control the emotions, thoughts, feelings and behaviours that you attach to the situation. For example, if by watching the news channel it fills you with dread or causes anxiety, turn it off! If you are on social media and all you seem to read is people’s opinions and scaremongering, unfollow them. No-one is telling you, you have to read it. No-one is forcing you to follow or listen to anyone. That choice is totally yours! If it doesn’t serve you, remove it. Stop creating barriers for yourself, stop giving yourself more reasons to feel anxious, angry, sad or any other negative feeling. Ask yourself what is it I need in MY life to feel happy? What do I need right now to feel positive
emotions to get me through this current situation? For me personally, I know I need to be surrounded by like minded positive people therefore, if you’re not positive, you’re not in my life. It’s that simple! This doesn’t mean I’m heartless or nasty, it means I have created realistic barriers to protect my own mental health and I advise you all to do the same. Do the things that make you smile, create the thoughts that keep you positive and content. Once you get over yourself and implement these rules, you will live a much more stable and positive life. If you are the person that posts negative statements on social media, or you voice your non factual opinions to friends and family, ask yourself what is the real reason you are doing so. I know it’s not to scare everybody, so what is it you actually need? What is your fear and how can you turn that into a positive?

Enjoy a classic silent movie IF you are wondering what to do to keep yourself entertained during the lockdown when all forms of live music and entertainment have been postponed, the internet does give a wide choice depending upon your taste. Founded in 1880 in Madrid, the Círculo de Bellas Artes which is a not for profit operation has been at the forefront of promoting the arts of all types including music, theatre, cinema, painting and much more, but of course like so many other organisations has had to curtail all of its work. What it does have however is an archive which features many of the performers who have been involved with the organisation over the years. Picking just one video which is on their YouTube

There have been book clubs in different parts of the Costa del Sol where English speakers meet on a regular basis to discuss the latest books that they have read. Whilst you can’t go out meet people any more it is very easy to get hold of books either by purchasing paperbacks online for home delivery or by downloading them to a Kindle or tablet. Why not arrange with friends to set up your own virtual book club, agree the book that you all want to read and then meet on a weekly basis online to discuss the contents. Although the Zoom conferencing facility has been criticised for poor security, this is really a matter to worry governments and big business rather than individuals.

This week Celebrity Chef & Fellow Master Chef Steven Saunders, proprietor of The Little Geranium in La Cala cooks a fantastic chicken stew, a perfect dish for post Easter lockdown!

POULET A LA MOUTARDE as it is called in France, translates as chicken with mustard and is a classic French stew. This is just the most delightful recipe, easy to make, deliciously tasty and very cost effective. Easter has now passed and it seems like lockdown has been going on forever! Everybody is cooking at home because we have no choice and my concern is that they will all turn into Master Chefs! Lol. I have a lot of people asking me for recipes but as fast as I can reveal my ideas, shops are running out of the produce! My home-made bread recipe that you can make and bake within the hour was in EWN a couple of weeks ago and is on my Facebook as a video, but immediately people were saying that they couldn’t get flour! I had no idea that the shops would run out of basic things like
flour, it is such a staple product. These are crazy times, so let’s try and get these ingredients pretty fast and follow this simple recipe! You will need a whole chicken but get a good one, campo over here or free range in the UK. We are going to joint it and use every single bit of it like it should be. In the luxury world that we have been living in we often disregard the wings and sometimes even the legs but in this new world we eat everything and actually that is the attraction! It all cooks in a lovely stock which helps make the magical flavours come together. I use lemons from my own garden which enhances the dish and herbs like French parsley or fresh tarragon are excellent with it, but get what you can and don’t stress over it! I remember putting this on my lunch menu when Chef Raymond Blanc was booked to come for lunch at The Pink Geranium a few years ago. He was a colleague and friend and someone that I admired not just for his cooking skills

(which are driven by his immense passion) but also for his business skills. So I wrote a menu with some French influence which I knew he would like and I put this chicken dish on the menu along with my mother’s Beef Bourguignon and a fantastic sousvide foie gras terrine with braised oxtail and home-made brioche. He was going to be well impressed! I worked on the dishes in the kitchen days before with my chefs, making the terrine and the brioche and we got it so perfect. Then his office called and cancelled! I was so disappointed. A few months later I had an evening dinner party booked at his Le Manoir in Oxford with friends and I called him and asked him if he was going to be there, I wanted to see him. I remember saying that I knew he would like to know that I was going although the table was not in my name. He agreed and apologised for cancelling and said he would be there. On the day of the dinner party he left a card on our table with an apology handwritten inside and a cartoon drawing of a chef saying …sorry! I was sorry too, but from that day onwards I never messaged him again. However whenever I cook this dish he comes to mind!

Poulet a la moutarde Ingredients (Serves four) 2 tbsp of vegetable oil or light olive oil 1 whole chicken free range 125g of salted butter 3 small onions or shallots peeled and quartered 3 cloves of garlic peeled and sliced thinly 2 bay leaves 250ml of white wine 500ml of chicken stock 150ml of cream 2 generous teaspoons Dijon mustard 1 handful of French parsley chopped or fresh tarragon Maldon salt Black pepper Juice of 1 lemon Method Place a large, heavy-bot-
tomed casserole type pan over a high heat and add a tablespoon of vegetable oil. Once the pan is hot add the chicken wings, thighs, legs and breasts skin-side down and cook for three or four minutes until the skins are golden and crisp. Remove the chicken from the pan; now add the second tablespoon of oil and half the butter. When the butter is foaming, add the onions and the sliced garlic and cook for about three minutes until they soften but do not colour too much. Add the chicken back into the pan skin-side up and pour in the white wine. Reduce the wine by about half and now add the chicken stock and the bay leaves and some sprigs of parsley.
Cook uncovered in a preheated oven 150ºc for 45 minutes. Once the chicken is cooked (remove a piece and test it) then add the cream, the remaining butter and stir in the mustard. Simmer for about 10 minutes on top of the stove and until the sauce thickens. Taste and season with salt and pepper, then stir in the chopped parsley or tarragon and squeeze the lemon juice all over and serve. This dish is fantastic with some buttery mashed potato or if you have it add a little truffle oil to the mash. Choose some green vegetables and even some carrots to accompany it in the centre of the table.

I’VE been thinking about the Millennials. They get so much criticism, don’t they? I can hear the likes of our Leapy Lee and his idol Richard Littlejohn grumbling “don’t know they’re born, do they ‘eh? They should be forced to do National Service, blah blah.” Donald Trump, who Lee and Richard probably admire was a draft dodger, let’s not mention that though! What made me think about the Millennials was something my American friend posted on his Facebook page “This is so not fair for high school seniors who had their prom and graduation ceremonies taken away from them. Being born after 9/11 and growing up with wanton violence, only to enter adulthood amidst a worldwide pandemic. They really got the bad end of the stick here.” I thought, you know what, he’s right. All I’d seen up until then was criticism of our youth. Comparing the Pandemic to the War or shortages in the 70s. The old ‘they

should just get on with it because we had it worse’ attitude. You cannot compare this Pandemic to the War. In the War, what kept people going was community spirit. There is no community now, we are all separated. I think back to when I was a young woman - I lived for the weekends and my friends. For as much as I loved my parents, the last thing I wanted to be doing was stuck indoors watching Saturday night TV with them! This is possibly the most mentally challenging thing our kids will ever have to go
through. I think it’s great how the Millennials are coping. Yes, they may have taken to Instagram to post selfies of themselves in daft face masks. I’ve heard about some bizarre challenge they’re doing about not showering too! But generally, they’re sticking to the social distancing rules. Inside. Making their own memories. It’s middle aged people who don’t seem to be able to stay indoors. I’m seeing photographs of them in the media, not the kids. I also saw a suggestion that we clap for our children one night. Not a bad idea at
all. This may not be an actual war for them, but it’s just as challenging. If we can’t clap, just appreciate the effort they are making, by staying away from everything that’s normal at their age. As the Queen said “Those who come after us will say the Britons of this generation were as strong as any. That the attributes of self-discipline, of quiet good-humoured resolve and of fellow feeling still characterise this country. The pride in who we are is not a part of our past, it defines our present and our future.”

Twitter Donation TWITTER co-founder and chief executive Jack Dorsey has pledged to donate $1 billion to the fight against coronavirus. Dorsey tweeted that he would move the amount representing some 28 per cent of his wealth from his shares in Square, a digital payments company he also co-founded, to a new charitable fund called Start Small “to fund global Covid-19 relief.” "After we disarm this pandemic, the focus will shift to girl’s health and education, and UBI," he added, in a reference to the idea of universal basic income. Dorsey also promised it “will operate transparently, all flows tracked here.”

THE Duke and Duchess of Cambridge praised NHS staff and other key workers for doing an “amazing job” as they met some of their children during a virtual visit to a school in Burnley, Lancashire. William and Kate carried out their first royal tour via video link, chatting to pupils and teachers from the school to learn how they are coping during the coronavirus outbreak. The couple ‘virtually visited’ Casterton Primary Academy, close to Burnley General Hospital, which has remained open
to teach children of key workers and other vulnerable youngsters. “To you and everyone who is in during this time, it must be such a relief for all the parents who are key workers to know that their children have the normality and structure and they’ve got a safe place for them to be,” Kate told the children and teachers. “So really, really well done and for all of you, I know it’s not easy circumstances, but it’s fantastic.” A teacher replied: “Thank

Hero WWII Pilot Dies A SECOND WORLD WAR RAF pilot, who survived being shot down by Nazis and saved his family from the Blitz, has died aged 96 due to coronavirus. RAF hero John Moore spent the Second World War saving lives - including him rescuing his sister from the Liverpool Blitz. John had signed up to become a pilot for the RAF before he had even turned 18. His crew of six men flew 27 missions over Europe before their Lancaster was shot by enemy fire and came down over Lincolnshire. Two crew members died in the crash and three were left seriously injured. But John managed to survive the crash and spent a month in hospital recovering. Neighbours and friends of John have now paid tribute to ‘a lovely man with
