At 8pm every night the balconies are full of people, all currently living in fear of an unknown enemy, pushing their worries aside to come together in a beautiful act of solidarity. From the balconies comes a thundering

round of applause in an expression of gratitude to those on the frontline. Brave police officers, who have the hard job of enforcing isolation laws, also join in with their own way of thanking the public by flashing their lights and returning the applause. During this time of uncertainty and fear, we all need something to look forward to and the pandemic that has forced us apart physically has brought us together through our hearts with such community spirit.

Balearic Island President Francina Armengol explained on Monday the hotel will not be used immediately as it is not necessary. The aim, she

said, is to prepare for future needs. Armengol reported that the island administration has a list of the hotels which the chains have put at its disposition. There are also plans to set up some tourist accommodation to cover ‘social demands’ for vulnerable groups, the homeless and genderbased violence victims.

Accommodation: The Spanish government has ordered that hotels and short-stay accommodation (such as short-stay campsites or caravan parks) must close by midnight today March 26. These measures do not apply to long-term accommodation, such as long-stay campsites, as long as clients can cater for themselves, in their own spaces (ie that clients do not rely on communal facilities). If you’re currently on holiday in Spain, check with your tour operator or accommodation provider for further information. If you’re travelling and wish to return to the UK, contact your tour operator, checking the website of their airlines or ferry companies for further advice. The Spanish authorities may ask British travellers to move hotels before today March 26 and have underlined that no-one will be left without accommodation. UTILITY BILLS: Cutting off vital necessities is strictly prohibited. THE regulations stated below applies to individuals on a personal level. It is not to be taken into consideration if you are a business, as the same information may not apply to you. Energy, water and gas are considered basic necessities so the guidelines on these services have been made clearer than in other fiscal areas. The Spanish government has stated that cutting off access to these vital necessities is strictly prohibited. If you have been left without a job or are earning significantly less during this crisis you are not obliged to pay your bills. However, this does not excuse you from payment rather it postpones your payment to a later, more convenient date. Similarly, any mortgage payments do not have to be paid immediately if you find yourself in a vulnerable financial situation, but they will have to be repaid at a later date. Rent payments have not been specified upon and this remains a dangerous grey

area. Overall, the government has encouraged residents to establish a ‘chain of solidarity’ between landlords and tenants. In other words, they expect an agreement to be reached between landlords and tenants without interference from the state. Unions disagree with this method as they say issues like rent should not be left to blind faith. The government has recommended that those who have not reached a conclusion with their landlord and cannot pay their rent should go to social services to ask for financial help, as each autonomous community has been granted €300 million to help with social issues. Bins and IBI (Property tax) payments are hard to generalise as they fall under municipal jurisdiction, however they are likely to follow the repayment protocol of utility bills and mortgage payments. For example, Alicante has decided to delay the bin and IBI payments, whilst, Sevilla has reduced bin taxes for businesses who have been forced to close and postponed IBI payments. Coming out the other side AS the coronavirus crisis gets worse in Spain and around the globe by the hour it is hard to see life beyond what has taken on the characteristics of an increasingly horrific and terrifying never-ending nightmare. This is not by any means the first time the world has been plunged into dark depths by tragedy and war. This time the enemy is invisible, and a deadly foe which is showing no respect for national borders. But at extraordinarily difficult chapters in world history like this we do well to remember that dark times do not last forever, and take inspiration from the words of great leader Winston Churchill. “If you’re going through hell, keep going,” he famously said after all

Coping with coronavirus By John Smith THERE is a great deal of information about how to avoid infection by Covid-19, but there seems to be less about how to cope with it and the following is based on information supplied by a nurse. Purchase tissues (not toilet tissues), paracetamol (avoid anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen), mucus thinning cough medicine (not containing paracetamol), a vapour rub, honey and lemon. For anyone with a history of asthma make sure that you have a spare inhaler of the type normally used. Prepare some food, especially hearty soup and place in the freezer and also make sure that you have plenty of clear fluids as you need to keep hydrated. Make sure that you take plenty of rest and even if you start feeling better you may still be infectious for a further 14 days, so don’t go shopping but ask friends to do it for you and leave outside your door.

Churches closed CHURCHES across Mallorca have shut their doors. A week after the state of alarm declaration, the Bishopric of Mallorca decreed the complete closure of all churches, chapels and places of worship. The decision followed “the worsening of the situation due to

the coronavirus contagions,” the Bishopric commented. It said the aim was to avoid unnecessary contacts and the possibility of spreading the virus. At the same time the Bishopric reminded the faithful that their spiritual attention is assured via telephone or telematically.

DECISION: The Bishopric decreed the closure due to the ‘worsening’ of the coronavirus situation.

Household tensions AS the coronavirus crisis lockdown continues, it looks as though the enforced confinement in homes is aggravating some domestic tensions in Mallorca’s capital Palma. Police arrested two brothers in their 40’s early on Sunday morning after they got into a serious argument at their home in the Foners district. On the same night officers detained a 47-yearold Ecuadorian in the El Terreno district after he threatened to kill his flatmate and injured him with a knife. In the case of the brothers, police patrols went to the property after a number of calls to 091 reporting the violent row. When they got there they found only one of the siblings indoors. He admitted there had been a big falling out and both of them had got hurt. The other brother had stormed out, but only went as far as the building’s garage to not violate the movement restrictions. According to Spanish press, relatives of the pair said there had been bad feelings between them for some time and they were always arguing. The arrest of the Ecuadorian followed a call from the flatmate claiming he had attacked him with a knife and cut his hand. He reportedly told the patrol which went to the property to investigate that he had been living with the Ecuadorian for some time, having rented him out a room, but that they didn’t get on. When they got into an argument at the weekend he told the flatmate to get out, which, he said, was when he picked up the knife and threated to kill him. Police detained the 47-year old on charges of threatening behaviour and causing bodily harm.

WITH the lockdown and closure of schools, parents in Spain have a lot to do to keep children occupied. Although many schools sent out lessons via email or WhatsApp, a new concept for keeping up with school work was introduced by the Spanish Ministry of Education. For the foreseeable future, two Spanish TV channels, Clan and La 2 TVE will be broadcasting lessons from 9am until 2pm with different subjects being covered each day. Clan will concentrate on 6 to 12-year-olds whilst La 2 will broadcast work for 12 to 16-yearolds and as each group will only have one hour of lessons each day. THIS year’s Mallorca Live Festival has been put back to autumn due to the coronavirus crisis. The event at Calvia’s old waterpark had been scheduled to take place in mid-May, but will now be held on October 8, 9 and 10. The organisers said the decision to move the fifth edition of the festival to after summer followed talks with institutions, performers, suppliers and sponsors. As it stands, more than 80 per cent of the artists due to perform have confirmed they will be appearing, Spanish press reported. She is not a resident on the islands and does not own a property in Mallorca. She reportedly told officials she had the keys to her friend’s house. Just 234 passengers arrived at Palma’s Son Sant Joan airport on Saturday while 2,361 flew out.

THE Mallorca government is coordinating with the island’s tourism sector on preparing actions and a major promotional plan for when the coronavirus State of Alarm ends. Consell de Mallorca President Catalina Cladera last week presided over the FMT Mallorca Tourism Foundation Advisory Council, which brings together representatives from public and private entities. The FMT Advisory Council has been established as the meeting point for debating the current situation, analysing the main focus points and creating future lines of action to help a return to normality as soon as possible. The meetings will be via videoconference for as long as the exceptional coronavirus situation lasts, serving as a point of union, active listening and up-to-date analysis in order to be able to apply the measures which will best contribute to restoring the tourism market as quickly as can be done, the Consell said. Squatting and theft NATIONAL POLICE arrested a couple on Sunday night for squatting in a property in Palma and robbing another home in the same building. The 32-year-old man and 28-year-ols woman are suspected of taking advantage of the owner leaving on Saturday to look after a family member who requires care to get into her home and change the lock, Spanish press reported. When the owner got back on Sunday night and discovered they were inside the pair reportedly assaulted her. According to Spanish press the pair had taken several items from the property, among them a fridge and a sofa. Police also found they had forced their way into another apartment and taken a TV, video console and cash.

Arrested 3 times for defying lockdown POLICE in Palma arrested the same man three times in four days for defying the movement restrictions. Officers detained him on Tues-

day, Wednesday and then again on Friday morning next to the Parc de ses Estacions after he refused to go back home. Guardia Civil, National Police

and Local Police stepped up controls on roads across the Balearic Islands at the weekend to make sure people did not try to get to their holiday homes.

CALVIA Council is doing its bit to support and look after hard-working staff at local health centres. The local authority is from this week onwards using the Santa Ponça and Palmanova nursery school kitchens to prepare meals for personnel at the Santa Ponça PAC Continued Attention Point and the Palmanova medical centre. Strict safety measures are being followed, and there will be no contact between the people delivering the meals and those collecting them. Calvia Council has publicly expressed its support, gratitude and recognition of all the public health workers in the fight against coronavirus. The local authority has also made available five vehicles from different municipal departments for use for home visits, three of which are for the Santa Ponça PAC and two for the

LOCAL POLICE in the town of Algaida in inland Mallorca have brought a little light relief to the streets to cheer up children trapped indoors under the State of Alarm lockdown. Officers went round in patrol cars with purple gloves blown up to look like balloons on the wing mirrors and did a song and dance of popular children’s tune ‘En Joan Petit’ to lift the spirits of confined households’ youngest members.

Lone patrols LOCAL POLICE in Alcudia are patrolling in vehicles on their own after one of the officers tested positive for coronavirus. The Covid-19 infection confirmation meant the force had to change its safety protocols. Officers wearing masks and gloves and using disinfectant gel are doing lone patrols rather than as a pair. The officer in question was admitted to Inca hospital. Two others also showed symptoms. Alcudia mayor Barbara Rebassa reported last week that several of the

municipality’s 49 Local Police officers had recently been at a security fair in Madrid and a number of others had made trips outside Mallorca. Whether they picked up the virus in another part of Spain or not, Rebassa stressed all the safety and hygiene measures indicated by the health authorities had been adopted. Local Police deputy inspector Abelardo Mesias explained the prohibition on more than one officer per car meant in the event of an accident they would attend in two vehicles.

Cyber Crime

ONLINE VIRUS: Trying to break the entire medical software system. DUE to the State of Alarm, crime has drastically decreased but unfortunately it has not disappeared, as crime is now online. Police forces have informed of a new online virus which is reaching medical staff via e-mail, trying to corrupt and ‘break the entire medical software system.’ The deputy operational director of the police, Jose Angel Gonzalez, explained that there has been a significant increase in “dangerous and malicious” cyber-attacks.

Medical staff are not the only victims of these cyber crimes. Over 200 online hoaxes “which aim to provoke fear and panic within the population” have been made during this pandemic. For example, videos of an Italian prison riot have been misleadingly shared throughout Spain. On March 22 there were 7,007 reports and 61 arrests related to cyber crime. Since the State of Alarm, there have been a total of 30,254 reports against cyber crimes and 364 arrests within the National Police’s jurisdiction.

Counterfeit products THE European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) has been monitoring the activities of a number of rogue manufacturers and importers who are taking advantage of the current coronavirus crisis. It has discovered that there are a number of fraudsters importing into the European Union a selection of fake medical and personal protection products including masks, disinfectants, sanitisers and test kits. As well as being ineffective against the virus, these products also fail to com-

ply with EU standards, potentially damaging health. Sadly, fake face masks packaged to appeal to children are also being ruthlessly smuggled. Evidence suggests that these counterfeit products enter Europe through online sales and arrive in containers with fake certifi-

Fuel Prices may rise

FOR some weeks now, the world has benefited by the schism be­ tween OPEC and Russia over oil production and motorists have benefited here in Spain as well as throughout Europe with a drop in fuel prices. The OPEC concept was to reduce production in order to keep prices high as demands fall due to lock­ downs but Russia refused. Things have changed however as President Trump has intervened to initially purchase 30 million bar­ rels of crude oil to add to American reserves, thus steadying the price.

Inditex donate supplies

AS many companies with huge turnovers look to their governments to support them financially during the crisis caused by the coronavirus, Spanish giant Inditex, the world’s largest retailer, confirms that profits will be down this year. Not daunted however, they have decided that with more than 3,700 stores temporarily closed around the world (although encouragingly only 11 of those are now in China), it will start to help the fight against the virus by turning over much of its ca­ pacity to making accessories for the health section.

Netflix reduce bandwidth FOLLOWING a request from Euro­ pean Union Commissioner Thierry Breton, Netflix has agreed to re­ duce the bandwidth it uses in Eu­ rope, but only by 25 per cent. The Commissioner made the re­ quest in order to try to ensure that with so many people in lock­ down, the internet would not crash. As Netflix charge an additional fee for HD quality, they have been careful to ensure that those cus­ tomers who do pay the extra don’t lose out or ask for a refund. Overall picture quality should­ n’t reduce considerably.

The EU market watchdog has confirmed that whilst all traders are supposed to record conversations with customers, for the duration of the current crisis, they must take detailed notes of their con-

versations. This is in response to complaints from banks that they have not received sufficient advice on what they should tell their staff to do in order to comply with the law.

One of the two men who used Gibraltar­based investment vehicle Ballance Capital, told the court “I have made mistakes, I have learned my lesson,” but a fine of €14 million doesn’t actually replace the €447 mil­ lion which was collected by the pair over their seven­year crime spree. It is believed that the technical le­ galities surrounding the trial made it the most complicated tax fraud case in history, but the convictions may be used as a precedent in future trials.

BUSINESS EXTRA Task force THE Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) in the UK is setting up a task force in order to ensure that retailers don’t use the coronavirus to take advantage of shoppers by either artificially inflating prices or making false claims.

Plastic bags IN order to speed up deliveries and to encourage home shopping, the British government is allowing supermarkets and food retailers to scrap the 5p charge for each plastic bag used for those ordering their groceries online.

Real gamble THE Gamesys Group which currently runs one gambling brand, Botemania, in Spain, is looking to launch a second platform following its recent merger and Ceuta officer relocation. Spain has however recently said that it will impose restrictions on gambling sites.

Of course if Corbyn’s lot were in power, they would probably have special stations set up to take care of them all. In fact, if Diana Abbott had anything to do with it, it’s highly likely they would be given some kind of priority! When our lives return to normal, let us hope there is a bit

Particularly the benefit baloney the country has become entangled and gnarled up in over the years. In fact this latest example is not only a disgrace, but an insult to the families and victims of one of the worst acts of terror the country has ever seen. Last week, after the brother of the Manchester bomber was impris-

oned for his part in the attack, it was revealed that his family had been receiving benefits of more than £2,000 a month. What was actually more disturbing was that when his mother took her three youngest children back to Libya in 2016, no one from Social Services thought to check their circumstances and the payments continued unabated. This was subsequently used by these two monsters to not

only live on, but also purchase the components for the bomb which ultimately took the lives and maimed the scores of innocent victims in the Manchester arena atrocity. In other words the British tax payer funded the attack! Obviously when all this horror is at an end and the UK has the opportunity for a fresh start, the whole system will need a complete overhaul. In our ‘new world,’ that will inevitably have undergone dra-

matic change, we will hopefully see more attention paid to the indigenous and better deserving population and use a little more common sense over the bleeding heart and luvvie brigade, who have managed to disrupt common sense and plunge the UK into a mind boggling turmoil of political correctness and utterly ludicrous ‘uman rights which needs to be sorted. Finally this week I fervently hope, that when our human race ultimately manages to defeat this invisible nightmare, it will realise just how frail our existence actually is and learn that love and peace is still the only true answer to it all. I am going completely crazy THE night of March 11, 2020 will be branded in my memory for as long as I have a functioning brain. I didn’t know it at the time, but when my husband Marcus and I joined a couple of friends for dinner and drinks, that would be our last social gathering for what could be weeks if not months. Alice and Paul were at the tail-end of a four-month stay in La Cala, and we were discussing, among many other things, our plans for Marcus’ birthday celebration in Benidorm’s Old Town on March 25. Then, on the Friday, came Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s bombshell announcement of a ‘State of Alarm’ - the first in Spain’s history - in response to Covid-19.

ON LOCKDOWN: Will we ever be able to socialise again?

This had a devastating effect on the couple’s holiday - and, indeed, the vacations of thousands of others. They were informed that they wouldn’t be able to fly home on the date they’d booked, and would have to get a much earlier evacuation flight on Wednes-

day, March 18. There would be no birthday party for us, or any other form of mingling. Socialising is the very essence of being human, and is so much part of street life in Spain that its absence is the most surreal and disturbing thing I’ve ever experi-

enced. This is the stuff of fantasy. So was the arrival the day after the ‘State of Alarm’ of a delivery man. In all my years in Spain I have never had a delivery on a Saturday. He came bearing a small parcel from Amazon… and a huge, heavy carton on a trolley containing heaven alone knows what. A fridge? A freezer. A cooker? He explained it was for the concierge of the building, Julio, whom he couldn’t locate. He asked if he could leave it in our apartment. Of course I agreed. I tried phoning Julio but got no reply. When I finally managed to contact him he said was away, but he’d pick the carton up first thing on the Monday. It’s still partially blocking our front door. And very worryingly Julio appears too have vanished off the face of the earth. When you’re a virtual prisoner in your own home, unable to get out except to walk the dog and buy food and medication, you immediately start thinking

about the things you really need but cannot buy. In my case the first item that sprung to mind was vaping liquid. Tobacconists, whom are allowed to open, do sell the stuff but my experience is that their brands are inferior, so I stick with my favourite vape shop. Then it hit me: Vapour Bros has on online store. So last week I put in an order for enough liquid to float Queen Mary 2. That order should have arrived by now, but it appears that no delivery personnel or posties have been to our apartment block all week. Has the virus impeded or halted deliveries in Spain? I could find nothing on the Internet to suggest that it has. I’ve decided to use my confinement to improve my Spanish, and a new phrase I added to my vocabulary today is ‘me estoy volviendo completamente loco’ (I am going completely crazy).

What is wrong with Mummy? MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED

LIKE any other parent you live with the guilt and question yourself if the job you are doing is ‘good enough,’ with that and my own mental demons I would bring myself to breaking point. Being a parent is difficult for anyone, but being a parent with bipolar does come with a unique set of worries and challenges. I cannot count the number of times I have stopped and wondered how much damage my illness causes to my child. I remember many sleepless nights worrying about the day I would have to explain to my child what her Mummy had to go through on a daily basis. I will never forget the words my mum said to me one day “We will explain to her in age appropriate terms.” Growing up children naturally have a lot of questions - when they don’t get answers to their questions they tend to come up with their own, which can be incorrect and scary for them! “Why does my mummy cry and shake sometimes?” She asked her Nana. UH OH!! How do you explain to a five-year-old about panic attacks?!?! I felt as if my whole world came crumbling down, I thought I was doing so well by putting a brave face on day in and day out for my child, hiding away the fact that I had to take medication several times during the day. That I cried or felt suicidal at times. That I was tired, so tired of being ME! First thing I could think of saying was “Mummy has really bad headaches and sometimes gets really poorly.” I asked a child psychologist on how to deal with this kind of situation, to which her professional advice was to talk to her in words she understood and to always speak the truth. Each parent and child’s “beginning conversation” about bipolar and anxiety disorder will be different depending on the child’s age and ability to understand. Nobody knows your child better than you do.

This seemed the appropriate explanation for a five-year- old, and it was, I answered her question and on she went about her day without giving it another thought. Now at the age of seven years old, she knows that her Mummy is different, that I have good days and bad days, she knows what a panic attack is, she also knows to call her grandparents straight away if she thinks Mummy is really poorly. She knows she can ask me anything, tell me what she is worried about and Mummy will always answer. The hardest thing to live with is knowing that seeing me live with bipolar may have caused her to feel unsafe, caused her to feel upset, or blamed herself - breaks my heart. Everyday I wake up setting my parenting expectations so high. On my good days I may meet them all, and on others I fall short. But the one thing that never falls short, is how much love I have for my child and some days that is ENOUGH. A few tips I have learned along the way, may help others reading this: • Don’t be scared to ask for help! : Let your loved ones know how they could help you. It’s brave to admit you would like some help. • Don’t sweat the small stuff: If you can’t do the dishes today because you need an early night, don’t worry, they will still be there tomorrow!! • Self care is important : You need to take care of yourself in order to be able to take care of your children. • Your self worth exists outside of your family : It’s important to develop outside interests so you can feel worthy. Diet and lifestyle habits that can optimise your hor monal and skin health. This is not about taking a specialised rotation of supplements or adhering to a detox or cleanse. LAMBE-MURPHY AS I sit at my desk to write this column, I realise that I am fortunate. Yes, like everyone else, I too am in lockdown, but as I sip my espresso, and look to the sea, I know I am one of the lucky ones. I’m healthy and my family, who are in Ireland and the south of France, are thus far, okay. I am lucky in others ways too, as I’ve never held, what they like to call a ‘proper job.’ Therefore, I’m used to the freedom of doing as I wish, when I wish. While I saw others panic and stress when told to self-isolate, the idea of staying home, was at first, very normal to me. However, it was after day one that I realised, I longed to lunch at Sea Grill, or get lost in Museo Ralli. I longed to be free to pass the late afternoon at the stores of Puerto Banus, or hop on a plane for risotto al nero at Cipriani, Monte Carlo. But alas, lockdown is lockdown. As the days began to pass, I started to snoop on social media to see how others were coping. Home work outs, cookery, fashion advice, beauty tips for ‘lockdown meltdown.’ All fine, but nothing new. Then of course there were those, who chose to moan and complain about everything and everyone. I scrolled and scrolled, only to see people moaning at the government, the world, the sky, the sea and the dog. Nothing was off limits. Without intention, I began to unfriend and delete people at an alarming rate. Why do I need these negative sorts in my new virtual world? I guess I’d never noticed them before, as I, like most, pay little attention to social media, as such. Delete, delete, delete... I went into a frenzy, going from over 3,000 Facebook friends to less than 500 within half an hour. Try it, it’s surprisingly liberating. So, with a major Facebook cull complete, a morning swim, lunch on the terrace, and a work out planned for that evening, how was I going to stay entertained for the rest of the day? A couple of years ago, I wrote a novel, Diary of an It Boy. A factional story based on the hectic life of an international socialite. Filled with dramas and high-octane parties, from London to Gstaad. From Gstaad to Marbella, and beyond.

FORTUNATE: There’s a book in all of us, why not try it? Anyhow, I remembered how good it felt to escape into the writing world, where nothing matters apart from the screen and your creativity. After an hour in the cellar selecting some wine, I poured a glass of Amarone, and set about writing a whole new book. Should it be a follow-on from book one? Seeing as so much has happened since I wrote it, perhaps yes. It was at that moment, I experienced my first point of writers’ block. ‘Oh, a new book, exciting! What’s it going to be called?’ my friend Tancredi enthused, via Facetime. I couldn’t even come up with a storyline, so the title was too much to try. I closed the laptop and went to workout. As I pounded the treadmill (God I miss my morning run on the beach), it came to me. That evening with Miles Davis playing, the fire lighting, and the distinct scent of Byredo Safran candles, that fill my house, ideas flowed and I got busy. Without trying, I found my mojo. There’s a book in us all, try it. Who knows, perhaps from these dark days, will emerge some great modern classics. I’ll keep you posted. Stay safe, stay busy, stay creative.

I’M really fearing for my home country, the UK. As I write this, it’s the day after Mothering Sunday. I’m seeing images from the UK of crowds out, going about life as if nothing has changed. I must admit, when news of the Corona Virus first hit the headlines, I laughed it off. I thought it was terrible for the people in China. But laughed at those who were panicking that it would make its way to us, in such a catastrophic way. I came out of denial about a month ago though! To see so many British people still thinking they’ll be ok, though. Quite Frankly, I can’t believe the stupidity! I’m getting the same sinking feeling felt when the Brexit vote passed. Thinking the same thing “my God, how can you all be so

stupid?” It wasn’t hard to see the bigger picture then. It’s not hard to see it now either. I thought no good would come from isolating yourself from a union that is there to protect all its members. You go back prior to the vote, even up until recently, you’d hear the same thing “we don’t need them. We pay in more than we get out.” I remember thinking about home insurance and comparing it to cancelling that because your street hasn’t had any break in recently. Yes, Britain has done well over the years. It’s been one of the strongest European countries. I can see it all

coming crashing down now though. The failure of the government to act quickly and lock the country down. The sheer stupidity of the masses going about life as if everything is normal too. Italy’s heath system is on the brink of collapse and so is Spain’s, despite swift lockdowns. It’s inevitable the UK will suffer much more. I think dark days are ahead. I fear the economy and the health system will both completely collapse. Now they’ve cancelled their insurance policy too (EU membership), there’s no future financial aid available. No help from their neighbours. I hope by the time this goes to print, the UK government will have done the right thing and stopped freedom of movement. Maybe some good will come of it? Maybe those who voted to restrict movement in the good times will realise how precious it was during the bad? Wouldn’t that be ironic?!

AS some of you noticed I didn’t do an article last week. I tried about 10 times but nothing I was grumpy about seemed really relevant at the time. Since then we have been put on lockdown and the whole world has gone crazy. But this week, after being home for a few days, there are some things I think need addressing. These articles are written a week in advance so this might have all changed by the time this goes to print. I agree with everything being done here in Spain with a couple of exceptions. For instance there are three of us living here me, Mrs S and our dog WhatWhat. Yes,I know, but that was his name when we got him. He needs to be walked three times a day and sometimes one of us does the walk and sometimes we both do, but now only one of us can. Why? We know not to speak to people, but I’m allowed to go shopping or to the pharmacy where other people are. I’m dog walking round a deserted street! Maybe someone can ex-

plain. I also read that builders are working on sites. There’s other things, but let’s just do as we are told. Here everything is closed so as painful as it is, the public are in no doubt about the rules. But in the UK places are allowed to open, but the public are being told not to go out to pubs etc. Madness. BJ has been on TV every night making government announcements. They are offering loans and grants to homeowners and business but only some with pandemic clauses in their insurance cover will be able to claim. But there will be some that, for whatever reason, don’t fit the criteria. Landlords need to have their rents paid by tenants but what if they can’t pay? There’s nothing in place for them. I read on Twitter trolls saying it serves landlords right like they are all some type of Rackman character (Google it). But it’s just another business like having a shoe shop. Some of the small businesses that are closing now will never open again. Rental properties here are getting no bookings now and bookings are being cancelled. There are many people here that work and have a small amount of savings. We all have bills to pay. Let’s hope that everyone works together and we will get through it.

NOT BORED YET DEAR EWN, Thanks for keeping on top of the reporting for us. Now that my family’s panic has calmed down a bit and we have started to settle in after a week of isolation, I am glad we have somewhere to turn to. We thought the children were going to drive us crazy because they are a tad hyperactive but have taken some advice I saw you had online and we have been doing daily relaxation and yoga. There were also a lot of online activities for them and the town hall has been showing videos of exercise, so at least we will come out of this more physically fit! Heavy handed DEAR Euro Weekly, I wondered if any of your other readers have been having the same problem. I understand and agree with all this staying in the house isolation. However, my wife and I are in jobs where we still have to go to our workplace. We have our NIE and residency but also carry a paper signed and stamped by our work. We are getting stopped every day when we leave the house and the police are not happy with our paperwork. I understand the reason they are there and the massive and scary task they have at hand but must they be so aggressive? Also, I really do feel that there is a sense of racism about it. I am obviously not a local which they will tell by looking at me. I was out walking my dog and a kind resident pulled up and told me that the police were on the next block and scanning all the dog’s electronic chips to make sure they are registered to you, overkill? I will keep doing all that I can but is there no way of explaining this is scary enough without an armed aggressive man threatening you every day? Concerned. David MacAskill

Under control SPAIN is currently on lockdown in a State of Alarm and most residents are now in self-isolation. In certain areas of the country, the police are having major problems controlling the general public. Hefty fines are being dealt out and warnings are being given for normal acts like walking down the street or having passengers in your car. The police may seem heavy-handed and threatening to some, even though the people of Spain are pretty compliant in comparison to other countries. Will the UK lockdown go so smoothly? The news in Britain up until now has been full of crime, out of control gangs and evidence that the police there cannot handle the public as it stands. How will they deal with that kind of lawlessness when trying to enforce a lockdown? We can only hope that the Army can put the point across and bring the country into their control. Who knows, maybe when we come out the other side of this there may be some kind of new appreciation and order. The population may then realise that a sense of control can work in everybody’s favour. Solidarity and putting on a united front in a time like this can help spread a feeling of positivity as we band together to get through this. Here’s hoping, stay safe.

Minimum €30 supermarket spend

OBJECTIVE: The local authority wants to discourage residents from doing daily shops. A COUNCIL in Extremadura has established a minimum spend of €30 in supermarkets and food shops throughout the coronavirus State of Alarm. The mayor of Herrera del Duque in Badajoz, Saturnino Alcazar, said the aim of the council proclamation was to ensure residents “avoid going shopping daily and comply with the obliga-

tion of staying at home for the maximum possible time.” The proclamation states that the entrances and exits to food stores are being checked and that there will be sanctions for anyone who violates the €30 minimum. The mayor reminded the municipality’s 3,500 residents that the majority of food outlets and supermarkets in the locality

offer a home delivery service. The council head explained the decision to introduce the minimum spend measure had been taken due to the “continued non-compliance by some residents” with the State of Alarm regulations on confinement, and who had been “using shopping as a pretext to leave the house.”

Spanish repatriated THE Spanish Cabinet have decided to include an exception to the decree, established on March 10, that prohibited direct flights from Italy, as they aim to repatriate Spanish nationals and residents who find themselves stuck in Italy. Maria Jesus Montero, the spokeswoman for the Cabinet has specified that whoever arrives to Spain on these flights must stay in complete quarantine at their homes. To make sure they stay quarantined they will be monitored by health authorities. Flights will be able to land in various Spanish airports, such as, Madrid, Barcelona, Las Palmas and Malaga. This decision has been made due to the
