STEP UP TO CANCER
GETTING active and raising money for an extremely worthy local cause is the aim of the fantastic Step U p To C a n c e r i n i t i a tive. The roots of the fundraising idea began with Anita Vince, who had breast cancer in 2014. As part of the healing process Anita organised a walk over the Tramuntana mountain range with friends. Every year since the first walk in 2016 Anita and her crew have walked the GR221 at Easter to raise money for Cancer Support Mallorca. Over the years they have raised more than €15,000 for cancer charities in Mallorca. This year six ladies are island hopping and from April 3 to 10 they will be walking the GR223, otherwise known as the Cami de Cavalls in Menorca. As always they will be looking for sponsorship. One thing they’ve noticed is that many would like to take part in these walks, but for one reason or another are not able to. Hence Step Up To Cancer. People can walk the GR221 distance throughout April, in their own time, at their own pace, with friends, family or loved ones. The commitment to get involved means agreeing

to walk a certain number of steps over the month, the total equalling the amount needed to walk the GR221. On registration participants will be given a chart to mark their progress. Some may be able to do the whole amount, others just certain stages. Either way, the idea is for people to get more active and raise funds for charity. There will be a registration form on the www.cancersupportmal lorca.com website. The cost to register is €25, and everyone will receive a pack including a t-shirt, string bag, sponsorship materials and progress chart. The kick-off event will be on April 1, when registered participants will be
able to collect their pack. There will be an initial walk of about an hour and 30 minutes starting and ending at the venue, which will be a big boost to the week’s steps. There will then be refreshments at the starting point and the opportunity for participants to discuss their plans for the month ahead. Registered participants will be able to share their progress over the month on a Facebook group, as well as discuss any problems in reaching their goal, arrange meet-ups and walks with other participants, and so on. The initiative will wind up with a grand finale event to celebrate everyone’s achievement. Everyone taking part will receive a
certificate, plus there will be live entertainment, food and drinks, a raffle, prizes, and more. Anyone not able to sign up to the walking can always sponsor others, donate directly on the Walk the GR221 for Cancer Support Mallorca Facebook page or volunteer to help on either the kickoff or finale events. Businesses can do their bit too by sponsoring the event, helping out on posters, t-shirts and general planning, or by providing branded material for participants’ packs.
All the money raised will go to Cancer Support Mallorca, a charity helping cancer patients in Mallorca and Menorca. They provide translators, counselling, nutritional advice and alternative therapies for free. They also have volunteers who help cancer patients with Spanish bureaucracy and provide free to cancer patients items such as wigs, bandannas, prosthesis. On top of all this, they give awareness raising talks in English and Spanish at schools, clubs, and the like.

THOUSANDS of people took part in the wide range of activities on offer in Palma on Sunday to mark the annual Day of the Balearic Islands, which commemorates the establishment of the region as an autonomous community in 1983. The programme included fairs, exhibitions, children’s entertainment and open door days at different institutions. The weekend’s fine weather made the Plaça Drassanges where artisans from all the islands were demonstrating their skills, one of the most popular locations. Also attracting the crowds was the artisans’ market on the Passeig Sagrera, which offered all kinds of typical items and tastings of island-grown produce. The day’s events began early with the 9am start of the ‘13th Marxa Cicloturista Dia de les Illes Balears’ cycle race. Among the other

Children were treated to
demonstrations of Menorcan horsemanship and ecological themed activities and a variety of family-orientated workshops in Porta de Santa Catalina and a children’s party in the Parc de Sa Feixina. The Balearic Island Parliament was one of the institutions to open its doors to the
public on Sunday afternoon. The parliament reported some 1,200 members of the public took the opportunity to take a look around. As a novelty this year they could connect their mobiles to an audio guide available in five languages. Parliament president Vicenç Thomas was there to welcome the public. Speaking earlier at an institutional act to celebrate the 37th anniversary of the coming into effect of the Stature of Autonomy, Thomas said it had taken the Balearic Islands to “the most important prosperity and stability in our history.” Looking towards the future, he commented, “the coming years have to be years of major agreements: grand pacts which make the decisions taken in this parliament effective, and at the same time finalise the work of this chamber with laws and complementary measures.”
INVESTMENT: The regional government is spending €200,000 on projects aimed at preserving posidonia.
Saving the seagrass THE Balearic Island government is investing in preserving posidonia seagrass, more commonly known as Neptune grass. The regional administration’s Environment department will spend €200,000 on 10 projects. These will include a study on the impact of sewage pipes on the aquatic plant, the installation of protective buoys and the production of informative leaflets. These were matters discussed at what was the first meeting of the Posidonia Committee, an advisory body made up of experts and administration representatives and planned under the Government’s Posidonia Decree approved nearly two years ago. The project funding will come from the so-called Posidonia fund.

Burglar cuffed NATIONAL POLICE arrested a 25-year-old suspected of breaking into at least eight homes in Manacor. Police said they believe the detainee, who has a lengthy criminal record, used a blunt object to force open external shutters and break windows to get inside the properties.
5-car crash FIVE vehicles were involved in an accident on the Palma ring road at about 6pm on Sunday evening in the area close to the Son Hugo swimming pools. There were no reports of any injuries, but the crash did partly cut off the road leading to significant tailbacks.
Bike crash A CYCLIST ended up in hospital after his front tyre went into a grating on a cycle lane on Palma’s Avenida de Argentina on Sunday, Spanish press reported. It was also reported the cyclist had been riding in the correct direction and within the cycle lane markings.
Attack fine A PALMA court sentenced two women to an €840 fine for attacking and insulting two Soller Local Police officers after they went to their property to follow up on a neighbour’s report of yelling inside. The court also ordered the women to pay €600 compensation to the officers.
Kaiser Chiefs BRITISH indie rock back the Kaiser Chiefs is one of the latest bookings for this year’s Mallorca Live Festival. American DJ and composer Jeff Mills is also set to appear at the event, which will be staged at the old Calvia waterpark from May 14 to 16.

The Balearic Island Government has sold 11 double units now removed from circulation following the electrification of the island’s rail network to Kenya Railways for €9.6 million after a negotiation process which began in December 2018.

Funding for FEMINISM T H E M a l l o rc a g o v e r n m e n t has announced it wants to see the creation of a ‘feminist network.’ The administration said it wants to favour the creation of new municipal associations and support those which already exist, and will shortly be publishing details of a line of funding. Presidency councillor Teresa Suarez made the announcement on Monday at the presentation of the Consell events to mark International Women’s Day this Sunday March 8. She said the aim this year was to focus on feminism in towns and villages. O n M a rc h 1 3 a n d 1 4 t h e r e will be events in Santa Maria devoted to the subject of feminism in the municipalities. Experts and representatives of collectives will speak about the role of women in popular fiestas and nightlife, sustainability in life and urban feminism. “Without women, there are no villages,” commented Equality and Diversity director Rosa Cursach at the presentation.

Gender violence arrest
INCA Council is trying to encourage dog owners to clean up their pets’ wees. The Environment department has been giving out bottles to dog owners which the local authority hopes they will use to carry liquid for cleaning up pavements after their pooches with the aim of promoting co-existence and civic behaviour and keeping the town’s streets stain and odour-free. Civic officers have also been handing out the bottles, which include recommendations on use, for example including vinegar in the mix, and a request to dog owners to not let their pets urinate on walls, lampposts and urban furniture. The initiative comes under the SOIB VISIBLES 20192020 programme, which is promoted by the Balearic Island Occupation Service.
PALMA police have arrested a Bulgarian man on charges of physically and psychologically abusing his partner for months. The detention of the 32-year-old followed the victim’s report to the authorities. She claimed he had abused her on repeated occasions, putting her down and physically assaulting her. She also told officers that he wanted her to stay at home and not go out to work, and that last summer he had gone to her place of her employment and picked a fight. She asked him to come outside and talk to her in a nearby street. Once there he urinated on her. The National Police’s UFAM Family and Women’s Unit opened an investigation into the case and last week police identified the Bulgarian on charges of gender violence, threats and coercion.

Karine batters Mallorca STORM Karine battered Mallorca with winds gusting up to around 110 kilometres per hour and three to four metre high waves this week. The gales caused a number of incidents in various parts of the island. The Palma fire service had to remove a tree which came down in La Rambla in the city centre on Monday, luckily not injuring anyone. Firefighters also had to reattach power cables which had come loose in the winds and take down railings from the roof terrace of a building which were leaning over and threatening to tumble down onto the street. The fire service further reported that it looked likely that it was a strong blast of wind which tore off the tarpaulin covering scaffolding on a building in Calle General Riera in the island capital on Saturday night, causing the structure to come crashing down onto the pavement. By great good fortune there was no one passing by at the time. On Tuesday the AEMET State Meteorology Agency put Mallorca on

In fact the wind got up to 112 kilometres per hour in the Sierra de Alfabia in Bunyola. There were about a dozen windrelated incidents on the roads, the island government said. The Consell’s highway emergen-
cies team mainly had to deal mainly with fallen trees and traffic signals, but also other objects. Some roads had to be cut off to traffic. The highway connecting Orient and Bunyola was blocked by two pine trees which had come down. There were similar tree issues for traffic on the Lloret and Binissalem roads, at the crossroads connecting Maria de la Salut and Santa Margalida, on the Ma-1032
between Puigpunyent and Galilea and on the Ma-13 by the Can Bisanyes roundabout in Alcudia. Fallen trees and branches did not close the Palma to Puigpunyent road or the s’Estanyol road in Llucmajor, but did disrupt traffic flow until they were removed. Palma City Council meanwhile decided to close the Passeig Sagrera to pedestrians after at least seven palms toppled over.
Unemployment drop
THE Balearic Islands registered the biggest monthly drop in unemployment of any region in Spain in February. Employment Ministry figures show there were 3,290 less jobless in the region by the end of the month than in January, or a decrease of 5.41 per cent. This compares with a national average reduction between of just 0.24 per cent. Looking at the islands’ unemployment figures over the last 12 months, there were 560 less jobless than in February last year, or a 0.96 per cent dip. Affiliation to the Social Security system over the same period went up by 7,842 workers, representing a 1.82 per cent increase.
Top destination MALLORCA is one of the world’s top destinations for 2020, according to travel portal TripAdvisor. Thanks to the comments and opinions of TripAdvisor users, the platform has for the second year in a row put the Balearic island in ninth spot in its Traveller’s Choices annual ranking, behind locations including London, Paris, Rome, Bali and Phuket in Thailand. What’s more, Mallorca is ranked sixth most popular destination in Europe. TripAdvisor describes Mallorca as ‘a dream island, which is currently an important tourist beach destination for the Easter holidays.’

CORONAVIRUS CASES MALLORCA had four new confirmed cases of coronavirus by Wednesday bringing the total number on the island to five. All four had recently spent time in northern Italy, the worst affected region in Europe. A Palma woman believed to be aged between 30 and 40 who had been in Lombardy within the last few weeks began to show minor symptoms compatible with coronavirus last Thursday, specifically a cough and a temperature. She tested positive after she was admitted to the Son Espases hospital. According to reports she has two children, one aged five and a 19year old who is pregnant, but neither has been infected. A number of other people with whom the woman has had contact
are being monitored. A 68-year-old woman who spent a week in the Italian city of Turin then tested positive for the virus on Monday night. She went to the Son Llatzer hospital in Palma feeling unwell and running a fever. In accordance with current protocol, the hospital did the coronavirus test and sent her home with strict instructions on how to avoid infecting anyone else. When the results came back positive from Madrid the woman was notified and an ambulance sent to her home to collect her. She is now in isolation at the hospital and a second test has been sent to the Carlos III Health Institute National Microbiology Centre in the national capital to confirm the results. On Tuesday night two young men from the same family in Sa Pobla were found to be positive for the virus. They were initially tested after returning from a trip to Berg-
amo in Lombardy and began to show symptoms. The test results were negative, but the second test a few days later came back positive. Again, an ambulance
was sent to their home to pick them up and transfer them to the Inca regional hospital. And as in the other cases on the island the Directorate General of Public Health and Participation is looking at people they could have had contact with. The Balearic Island government’s Health and Consumer department has appealed for respect for all the patients’ privacy and issued reassurances of its confidence in the region’s health professionals and their work in close coordination with the Health Ministry. Last month a British resident became Mallorca’s first coronavirus case after picking it up on a skiing holiday in the French Alps. He was kept in hospital for several days before he was allowed to return home.

CHASE: When officers approached the 17-year-old he abandoned the moped and made off.
Teenage robber nicked SOLLER Local Police arrested a teenage robber following a chase through the streets. A patrol on duty in the port area on the outskirts of the town spotted the 17-yearold at about 5.30 on Monday morning pushing a moped it turned out he had just stolen. Something about his behaviour raised the officers’ suspicions, and when they approached him he abandoned the moped and fled. The officers set off in hot pursuit. One of them tracked him down a short time later in a garden hiding behind an orange tree. There was a struggle when he tried
to cuff the young delinquent, who managed to get away and speed off down the road. The patrol carried on looking for him and after a short while came across a suspicious-looking car. When they pulled over the 20-year-old driver they found the teenager sitting in the passenger seat. A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a bicycle chassis, two motorcycle helmets and tools, which the officers suspected were stolen. The officers detained the youngster for robbery and the attempted theft of the moped.
MALLORCA firefighters and the Guardia Civil carried out what turned out to be the tricky rescue of an injured climber from s’Entreforc in E s c o rc a o n S u n d a y night. The 28-year-old man had fallen and hurt his foot while climbing on the last section of the Sagitari near to Cingle dels Voltors, leaving him unable to continue on his own. The emergency services were alerted to the climber’s situation at about 7pm. The Guardia Civil mobilised a helicopter, but the take-off had to be aborted due to the strong winds. In the end the rescue team had to support the injured climber for several hours in difficult

THE number of visitors to the Balearic Islands in January was down nearly 27 per cent on the same month last year and total tourist spending dropped by more than 20 per cent, new figures reveal. The FRONTUR Frontier Tourist Movement Statistics and the EGATUR Tourist Spending Survey published by the National Institute of Statistics on Monday show 103,902
people visited the islands over the first month of the year. They spent €107 million in all. Overnight stays in the Balearics in January added up to 833,581. German tourists represented 52.4 per cent of the total foreign tourists. The second most important nationality in terms of foreign visitor numbers was the British, accounting for 15 per cent.

Some 400 demonstrators gathered to express their opposition to the planned works, calling for Mallorca to be “valued” and not “destroyed.” A manifesto was read out which criticised the “tourism monoculture” which the platform claims
has caused an increase in “human pressure, tourist places, land development, the use of fossil fuels, electricity generation and waste, land transport, job instability, increased property prices and social inequalities,” arguing making the airport larger would only make matters worse. “No airport project directed at increasing capacity is necessary because this will aggravate the environmental crisis. And it cannot be permitted when all the institutions have declared a climate emergency,” commented platform spokesperson Catalina Torres. The platform wants to see the Balearic government manage the islands’ ports and airports “to avoid planning behind the back of Balearic interests.”

INCA hospital is set to save some €20,000 a year on electricity thanks to the installation of 390 solar panels in the car-park. The solar panels mounted on 49 pergolas over the parking spaces will contribute 2.3 per cent of the power the hospital needs for its daily functioning. The new panels are in addition to those which were already operating on the hospital roof, and which contribute 2.8 per cent of the energy which the centre consumes, and which represent an annual saving of €17,776. Together therefore, the panels supply 5 per cent of the hospital’s electricity. As well as cutting the hospital’s outlay on power, the initiative is also aimed at cutting CO2 emissions: the Balearic Island Government calculates the overall reduction as equivalent to what approximately 755 trees would absorb. The Balearic Island Energy Transition department financed the nearly €396,000 cost of installing the new car-park panels and the Government Vice-Presi-

Feminist protest chain SOME 100 women joined a Mallorca Feminist Movement-organised human chain in central Palma to protest at what they claim is a patriarchal judiciary. The initiative, staged in front of the courts in Via Alemania at midday on Saturday, was aimed at raising awareness about the movement’s demand to ‘apply the Constitutional Law on Complete Protection Measures against Gender Violence.’ Movement spokeswoman Sandra Serra described the courts as “one of the most patriarchal institutions.” The Mallorca feminists also called for “an objective register of victims, because up until now only those who have been victims at the hands of

AS Britain enters into a round of negotiations with the European Union over Withdrawal, British International Trade Secretary Liz Truss has made a couple of statements concerning the future with the EU deal and the USA. Firstly she has made it clear that Britain is not going to let down its fishermen by entering into any deal which reduces their rights but this appears to be something of a ‘red herring.’ Fishing quotas were issued years ago for conservation purposes to AN unexpected side to the final Withdrawal negotiations over Brexit could be the loss of major works of art held in British galleries and museums. Two week review BREXIT progress was once again the key influence on the pound, but the impact of the coronavirus on global trade is also causing FX fluctuations. There are signs that these tensions will be inevitable with significant divergence in approach between the UK and the EU when it comes to trading standards and many other key areas. Sterling has been fluctuating with the latest news on Brexit and the possibility of the budget next month will not be final, but will instead be the first of three fiscal presentations from the government, offering less certainty. Economic statistics have been largely ignored in favour of the bigger picture, but it seems like the market can’t quite decide which issues are the bigger challenge - Brexit, the domestic economy or the coronavirus - leading to mysterious and sometimes counter-intuitive movements.
The euro has mostly been holding its ground in a challenging environment. GDP expanded by 0.1% in Q4, putting growth for the year at 0.9%. Despite the challenges of the coronavirus impacting trade, the provisional PMIs from across Europe were better than expected. Across Europe as a whole, sentiment remains largely unchanged and European Commission data show that confidence is improving, with an improvement from January. However, these results do not take the coronavirus into account. The euro may require further support and positive results in March to demonstrate the resilience of the economy and an upward trend following the economic slow-down. The US dollar has been enjoying a period of relative strength, but as the impact of the coronavirus appeared to show in the equities market and global trade, the greenback has been facing new pressure.

The Federal Reserve has been trying to downplay fears about the coronavirus but investors still expect two or three rate cuts this year, with the first coming imminently despite a supplyled economic downturn. Oil prices have been the key factor

influencing the Canadian dollar, and these have been impacted by the spread of the coronavirus as demand fluctuated. This has allowed the Loonie to sometimes make gains when oil prices rise, but the two aren’t inextricably linked. Mixed economic statistics, including a decline in manufacturing sales for the fourth consecutive month and a rise in headline inflation from 2.2% to 2.4% meant that oil alone wasn’t enough to ease all the pressure on the currency. The Australian and New Zealand dollars have both been severely impacted by the spread of the coronavirus. In Australia construction output fell, and the provisional PMIs show that while higher on the month, manufacturing was still in the red at 49.8 and the service sector fell two points to 48.4. The New Zealand dollar had a similar story - losing ground to the US dollar and falling to the back of the pack. A fall in milk prices is having an impact on the currency, particularly combined with the fall in visitors due to the importance of tourism to the economy.

An Italian researcher based in Cataluña whilst investigating uses of such printers stumbled across a way of making false meat using vegetable products and now Nova Meat based in Barcelona is able to produce ersatz steak, chicken, pork and rabbit which may look a little strange but tastes like the re al thing.

Pound GBP/EUR: Steady at €1.18 GBP/USD: Down from $1.30 to $1.29 The pound has traded in a wide range over the past four weeks, most ly as a result of renewed uncertainty surrounding Brexit. This was mostly centred on con cerns that trade negotiations between the UK and EU are likely to be chal lenging due to the conflicting goals of both sides. While the EU is pushing for the UK to maintain alignment in order to en sure a ‘level playing field,’ Boris John son has been clear that the UK will not abide by any EU regulations from next year. These concerns over Brexit proved to be a major drag on GBP ex change rates in February, preventing the pound from benefiting from some

Despite the Brexit gloom, Sterling was still able to find fleeting support in midFebruary following a Cabinet reshuffle. This saw Sajid Javid resign as Chancellor and be replaced by Rishi Sunak, who it’s hoped will be more amenable to the PM’s ambitious spending plans. Looking ahead to March, the pound is likely to become increasingly sensi tive to Brexit developments as UKEU
trade talks officially get underway. Ex pect this to inject fresh volatility into Sterling if negotiations prove difficult. GBP investors will also be focused on the publication of the UK govern ment’s Budget on March 11, with the pound poised to surge if the new Chancellor signals a willingness to loosen the purse strings. Euro EUR/GBP: Steady at £0.84 EUR/USD: Down from $1.10 to $1.09
The euro struggled in February as investors grew increasingly concerned about the health of the Eurozone economy. Much of the concern has been fo cused around Germany, which (in ad dition to some gloomy manufacturing figures) now faces increased political uncertainty following the shock resig nation of Angela Merkel’s heir appar ent, Annegret KrampKarrenbauer as leader of the ruling CDU party. Further limiting the appeal of the single currency was the serious coron avirus outbreak in Italy, which spurred fears the country’s already weak econ omy could slip into a recession this year. Going forward, the attention of EUR investors is likely to be split be tween the start of UKEU trade negoti ations and Eurozone data as they look for any signs that the Eurozone’s re cent slowdown may be bottoming out. US Dollar USD/GBP: Up from £0.76 to £0.77 USD/EUR: Up from €0.90 to €0.91 The US dollar climbed steadily high er through much of February as grow ing panic over the Coronavirus crisis

As the outbreak spreads, sparking fears of a pandemic, investors have grown increasingly nervous about the potential impact on the global econo my, fuelling demand for the ‘green back.’ However, the US dollar has not been completely immune to the con cerns surrounding the Coronavirus, with USD exchange rates weakening in late February amid speculation the spread of the disease could prompt a rate cut from the Federal Reserve. A renewed focus on US politics is likely to drive the US dollar in the com ing weeks as we are likely to see a clear frontrunner emerge in the De mocratic presidential primaries. IN a past life, when this ol’ boy was riding the crest, I would often enjoy showing guests around my brand new Berkshire home. Many famous folk came to visit in those far off heady ‘60’s’ days and on one occasion I was entertaining an extremely well known musician and his new fiancée. He was obviously besotted with his partner, a beautiful, ambitious and well-travelled young lady who, although relatively unknown at the time, in the next few years would become one of biggest stars on the planet. The pop musician, a lovely lad who hailed from a small town in the north of England, had shot to stardom almost ‘overnight’ and, although quite charming, was not at all street wise and still somewhat naïve in the ways of the world. During the ‘tour’ I showed them one of the somewhat lavish en suite bathrooms. Peering around his eyes alighted on the toilet bowl. ‘Ee Leapy’ he exclaimed. ‘What’s all that blue stuff in the water?’ How I replied to this innocent and innocuous enquiry is not important. What was important was the look of utter

Witnessing her reaction I realised that their romance was doomed. Sure enough, a short while later the affair was over.
The lady abandoned her broken hearted ‘stepping stone’ and went on to almost legendary stardom. And you know something, I experienced exactly the same misgiving when I heard Prince Harry enthusiastically inform the head of Walt Disney that his wife could do ‘voice overs.’ In the main voice overs in the acting profession are about one step up from a ‘walk on.’ Although it’s possible for recognisable
voices to earn quite a substantial income from this branch of the entertainment industry, participants don’t exactly ever find themselves on the red carpet! You certainly don’t take the opportunity to very publicly inform one of the biggest tycoons of the film industry that your (TV star!) wife does voice overs! I can imagine the grimace of horrified embarrassment on Meghan’s face from here! To me this conveyed exactly the same message as did the bathroom incident I witnessed all those years ago - incompatibility. And the end result will be exactly the same. In short, this self-centered woman will be ready to move on from her Canadian stopover and drag poor old Harry down to California’s Glitter Town, where he’ll be used as her golden ticket to the ‘A’ list chocolate factory. As love’s young dream begins to fade and their incompatibilities begin to tear them apart, this pathetically naïve young man will eventually become so fed up and disillusioned he will either turn to drink, have a nervous breakdown or come running back to Granny! ‘Flag of Andalucia’ Award to the Consular Corps of Malaga CONSULAR MATTERS FEBRUARY 28 is the official celebration of the Day of Andalucia, and this year also marks the 40th anniversary of the Andalucian Autonomy, as part of the festive celebrations, every year awards are given by the Andalucian Parliament in recognition to personalities and groups within the province for their admirable work and contribution to the dynamics, development and general enrichment of Malaga and regions. This year, the Flag of Andalucia to the Projection of the Province has been awarded to the Malaga Consular Corps for its contribution to international relations of Malaga City, fundamental for its projection and support to the resident international
community in the province. The Consular Corps of Malaga, an institution which I am honoured to belong to, in my position as Consul of Denmark for Andalucia and Extremadura, represents 43 countries in Malaga, creates consulates in Malaga on a successful and extensive projection level. Over the years, issues like security, climate, tourism, profitable investments and the friendliness of its people have been the main attractions of Malaga to foreigners. Some Consulates have been present in Malaga for centuries, such as the Danish Consulate that was inaugurated in 1641, and in later years came the German, The Netherlands and the United Kingdom Consulates. As early as the 19th century, 21 Consulates or Vice-Consulates were registered in Malaga; and increased in numbers when American nations were added. The historical origins of Andalucian self-government, go
back to the revolutionary uprising in Cadiz, in the 19th century, when greater democracy and government decentralisation were demanded. And as early as in the 20th century, highlights of the political profile of Blas Infante, ‘Father of the Andalucian Land’ are found, who, along with members of several Andalucian Centres, signed in 1919, the Andalucian Manifesto of Cordoba that described Andalucia as a national reality. A Notary by profession, Blas Infante was also a great thinker, politician, writer, historian and musicologist, who recovered the original green and white Andalucian flag, designed the Andalucian coat of arms, and composed the lyrics of the Andalucian anthem, before being shot in 1936. The first political steps that would lead to the current Andalucian self-government began only after the death of Francisco Franco, with the start

DID you catch the recent news that frightened flyers are set to lose their ‘emotional support’ animals? American airliner cabins could soon be free of ducks, pigs and miniature horses under government proposals to crack down on passengers flying with ‘emotional support’ animals. Passengers have tried to board aircraft with snakes, spiders, gliding possums and squirrels. These incidents have sometimes caused delays when the crew refuse entry to an animal. “The days of Noah’s Ark in the air are hopefully coming to an end,” a member of a flight attendants union reported optimistically. Hang on! What about my ‘emotional support’ silver-back mountain gorilla? Seriously, though, I recall the experience of an acquaintance who, back in the day, flew in a Twin
Otter to Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea. There were goats on board and people smoking. Luckily there was no co-pilot so he was able to persuade the Captain to give him the right hand seat. Aware that sometimes passengers tried to bring bigger livestock on board, he enjoyed the view from the cockpit, aware of the sound of chaos behind. Frankly, under no circumstances should animals (except guide dogs) be in the same area as passengers on any airline. (This should also apply to cruise ship restaurants where animals - umm, dogs, not pigs! - have been spotted.) If people can’t fly without the support of some kind of animal, then find some alternative means of transport! I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: it’d take more than an ‘emotional support’ animal to calm me down on any Boeing 737Max flight. And should anyone ever sit next to me with

an ‘emotional support’ spider, they’ll quickly find out who needs the most emotional support... Well, common sense makes news! And about time. Is this the first ray of sunshine in a world seemingly going crazy? Let’s hope so, but I’m not holding my breath. What cost kindness..? GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY RECENTLY I was a guest on Talk Radio Europe, to discuss bullying and online trolling. The sudden death of TV personality Caroline Flack, was enough for people to sit up and take notice of a situation that has been out of control for quite some time. For years, I’ve been on the receiving end of online trolls, as well as certain mainstream journalists, who felt it was okay to write negative, and sometimes very personal things about me. People I have never met, with such serious dislike for me. How can it be that someone can bother you so much, having never met them in the real world? To read these articles online, can bring you down. Especially when complete lies appear, and others can comment as they see fit. So, for years I have opted to ignore it all, even when people made it their
business to draw my attention to the hatred out there. In the days following the radio interview, I saw many people change their social media profiles to include a ‘Be kind’ logo or message. While all awareness is good, it made me think, we need kindness much closer to home, than online. Start by being kind to those we encounter on a daily basis. Be kind to the man you pass on the street, smile. Be kind by simply holding a door for someone. Be kind by biting your tongue, when someone does something to annoy you. We never know what’s going on in anyone’s life, so why add to the stress? As the week unfolded, I found myself lunching at the Marbella Club Hotel, a place that’s been a firm favourite for many years. I was due to meet a lady who wanted to ask my advice on curating a serious art collection. She arrived, and let’s say, was noticed by the other diners, who turned as she walked through the room. Head-to-toe in Hermes, with enough sparkle to make Harry Winston jealous, on paper she was typically Marbella.
GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY: Start by being kind to those we encounter on a daily basis. While she wanted to collect art, it was clear she already collected compliments. However, within moments of saying hello, I realised that there was a prob-
lem. Something that I was unable to handle. As the waiter approached the table, she was blatantly rude towards him. Cold, dismissive and snobbish. Why do certain types of people feel it’s okay to treat waiters, or anyone, in such a way? As if by putting them down, they’re building themselves up? I watched for as long as I could bare, as she spoke at the charming, smiling waiter. Her tone, as if he’d asked if her Birkin was real! After the first course of lunch was complete, I whispered across the table “this isn’t going to work.” Bewildered, coldly she asked what I was talking about, her rudeness now directed at me. Calling for the bill, I explained that I couldn’t stand to remain in her company, and how I wouldn’t feel right about helping her source an art collection. Yes, my words were harsh and final, but I felt that sometimes there are situations, where one must be less kind to certain people, in order to offer kindness to those who deserve it most. Even if that kindness costs you a tidy commission fee.

Donating blood in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. In Spain, Blood Components and Services are provided by 17 Regional Blood Transfusion Services. Despite their autonomous operations management, every regional service is fully incorporated into a unique and common Public National Health System, supplying a cohesive blood transfusion care to all citizens, residents, and visitors in Spain based on 100 per cent voluntary and non-remunerated blood donation. For more general information, visit www.msps.es. Anyone who has lived continuously in the UK between 1980 and 1996 (a minimum of one year) will not be able to donate blood in Spain due to the risk of transmitting mad cow disease. Similarly, there are restrictions if you have received a blood transfer in the UK. However, each region may have different rules about donation. Call the donation helpline on 935 573 500. Alternatively, visit www.donorsang.gencat.cat to find out if you are eligible. If you are eligible, you can give blood at your local hospital, or via the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja) at one of their clinics, or in one of their mobile units. You can check dates and locations by visiting www.donarsangre.org. A donor card is not necessary to give blood. On the first visit you will have to provide DNI, NIE, passport or a driving licence. If you are already registered in the Blood Bank, you only need a donor card or a document with your name and surname. The process of blood donation takes just 10 minutes in which 450 ml are collected (equating to 10 per cent of the total blood circulation of an adult person). Despite huge technological advances, the only way for hospitals to obtain blood is through the generosity of the public. The blood is carefully screened for disease to make sure it is safe. After a tattoo, you must wait four months to be eligible to donate. After surgery, the exclusion period will depend on the type of intervention. After minor surgical procedures, you cannot donate blood for seven days or until you are fully recovered. After undergoing major surgery, you will not be able to donate blood for four months. The rarest blood type is AB, present in 1 per cent of Caucasians, according to research by the America Red Cross. Has this happened to you before? MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man LAST year for my birthday I was very kindly given some gift cards for my favourite large store El Corte Ingles. As I didn’t really need to buy anything immediately I put them away and then when I decided to have a little shop I took them out and went off to treat myself. I had a look round, found a few bits and went off to pay for them. I had seven of these gift cards but didn’t actually know how much they were for so I asked the assistant to check for me. She swiped them and told me four didn’t work. So I asked why? And she said it was to do with the magnetic strip and asked if they had been in my pocket. Well of course they had been in my pocket. This was now becoming reminiscent of my other nightmare scenario of getting my hotel key card then going to my room which is located about 12 miles from reception and finding that my key card won’t work. No matter how slowly I swipe it or
how fast I try and insert it in and out of the cavity provided, the light will not turn green. I, of course, do all the checks like making sure it’s the right room number before trekking back to reception, dragging my suitcase don’t forget, and asking for a new key. By now there is a different person at the desk who decides that she needs to see my ID again before she can give me a new key. I’m told not to put it in my pocket near my credit cards or telephone! Back to the store and I am now being told the same thing by the sales assistant. OK, no problem, just re-activate the cards. No, you have to go to customer services and get it sorted. Of course, there is a massive queue but eventually get it sorted. But what I did do was get them all merged so I only had one card. The point is if they know what causes the problem and it’s happening all day every day, as I was told by the hotel and the store, why don’t they fix it? It can’t be that difficult surely in this day and age when everybody has a mobile phone and credit cards. I’d love to know how many of you this has happened to.

DEAR Euro Weekly, Over the weekend I read a story on your Facebook page regarding a lady being removed from the beach in Carvajal as she had her dog with her. I walked from Fuengirola to Carvajal on Sunday and I had my dog on the boulevard on a leash, because she bombs along the beach! I noticed dogs on the beach all the way along. As a resident and dog owner I was under the impression that at certain times of the year, out of season, you can take your dogs on the beach as long as you have their medical details with you. The Carvajal stretch of beach was mostly empty of bathers over the weekend so I really don’t understand why the woman was singled out. Was the officer trying to make some money from a fine as he had not fulfilled his quota that day or does he just have problems with non-Spanish people? If Euro Weekly were to get the update of the times we can have the dogs on the beach so we can wave it in their faces next time that would help greatly. Yours lovingly David Thompson

Andalucia flop Euro Weekly, Loved your coverage of ‘Dia de Andalucia’ but dare I say it was a bit of a damp squib. What I had hoped would be a massive street party and celebration in my area was a complete letdown. As your articles pointed out last week the significance of the day and different traditions, you would think that people would have let their hair down a little. I did see one video of a small party in one little area but I live in a big town and there was nothing of note. We all pay one way or another of course as the government funds it from general income. But the idea is sound. In Britain, they would need to nationalise transport to be able to do the same of course. Also, in the UK, demand for trains is already beyond capacity so making it free will just make it worse. WITH recent news of the tragic passing of one of Britain’s brightest TV stars, Caroline Flack, the situation will not only be one of grief, but reflection and will again raise the question of how hard can the press push a person all for the sake of a big story? The young TV host’s energy, kindness and huge talent made her one in a million, and a massive favourite with audiences of all ages. Health minister Matt Hancock made an appropriate point when he said: “We must do much more as a society to look out for each other, whether online or off.” Well-known charities like the Samaritans who work hard to prevent suicide have pointed out there are often many complex reasons for why someone chooses to take their own life regardless of their history, social standing or outward personality. Why was the decision made to push forward with the court case Caroline was currently embroiled in? The boyfriend who was involved in an alleged case of gender violence wanted to drop the charges, and her management team had been very clear in saying that she was in a vulnerable state. We must realise that from our close family to friends, and neighbours, we can all positively impact on others’ well-being. Whether it be asking if someone is ok, offering an ear for a chat or a shoulder to cry on, even the smallest act could make an important difference. If there is one thing we can take from this terrible tragedy, it’s remembering to reach out.

When we feel the need to look at other people’s lives and judge what they are doing, it is due to the fact that there is something going on in our own lives that we are not ready to admit to. This may be something as far back as childhood or even recent events. You may have been told you’re not pretty enough, not brave enough, not intelligent enough. This produces a feeling of self doubt, a sense of loneliness, fear and a lack of self worth. Then the ego takes over! In order to feel better, we start to create an opinion of others. We start to judge their decisions in life. It could be anything from what they wear, who they’re dating, how they parent their children. It almost becomes an addictive drug! The more we judge others, the less chance we have at looking at the real, raw and honest feelings that we feel and the reasons behind them. The truth is we can overcome this by simply asking ourselves four questions; 1. What and whom am I judging? 2. How does this judgement make me feel? 3. Why do I feel justified in this judgement? 4. What moment in my life triggered me to feel justified in this judgement? By asking ourselves these questions, we are able to witness our judgement, honour the feeling, forgive ourselves and learn to heal. I urge each one of my readers to give this exercise a try. The moment you feel the need to judge another, put pen to paper and answer the questions above.

Over the years I have learned to recognise my mania, and to enjoy it now it is being treated with medication - everything just feels exciting, euphoric and at the same time overwhelming. The world all of a sudden seems magnificent. My creative mind is unleashed and my head feels like it’s about to explode with a thousand racing thoughts, but it doesn’t matter, I’M ON TOP OF THE WORLD!!! My words get tangled up when trying to have a conversation, so I get irritated with everyone. I don’t understand why they aren’t going at the same speed as me, why does their day seem grey when mine is so colourful …? I wear red lipstick and my hair is always perfect, I obsessively clean the whole house with bleach often ending up with burns and sores on my hands. I bake cakes, pies and cook meals to feed hundreds. I obsess over songs, playing the same one over and over again until I am word perfect. It’s usually during this stage my family worry the most, because they know the higher I go, the harder my world is going to come crashing down. I may be a little controversial with this article, but bear with me. Part of the reason for stigma around
bipolar disorder is that we can be a little difficult to talk to and understand. During the mania phase I have a tendency to just talk whatever is on my mind most of the time with no filter. Often shutting people up or talking over them, when all I really want to do is to be able to tell you everything on my mind. Here are five small points on how you can support someone with bipolar. • Avoid patronising words - “Are you drunk?” “Have you taken your pills?” No I’m not drunk and yes I have taken my medication… there is a chemical imbalance in my brain that causes these highs and lows that I have no control over. • Keep them company - Sometimes all I want to do is be near someone I can trust, I simply just don’t want to be alone. • Protect them from harm - Express your concerns over my manic behaviour, health or lifestyle. I sometimes can’t see it. • Encourage me - If I am obsessing about something that isn’t particularly harmful, let me work through it, I may benefit from it. • Prepare for the crash - Will you catch me when I fall? My own father had a tendency to erupt at the least provocation bellowing and cursing all and sundry and sometimes hurling clocks (a story for another time) and random unsecured objects unfortunate enough to be in his path. monarchs of the age. His anger stemmed mostly from the outrageous supposition that women could actually rule over men... who were a little sensitive at this time (check out Tudor

Throughout history wars, conflicts and all manner of nasty events have been caused by one person’s anger (or indeed group’s... anger is after all highly contagious) against another, some imagined slur or lack of respect induces a tantrum in the mighty and then all hell breaks loose. Henry the Eighth, the least chilled monarch, was famous for his propensity to huffily send friends and family to the block (imagine how stressful a place the English court must have been… you really wouldn’t want to break those eggshells). Wrath, or anger if you prefer, boils the blood and shuts down the reasoning part of the brain. The red mist really does descend and blind with rage is an actual human condition blocking all thought and care. Many foul deeds have been committed in anger the lashing out both momentary and unthinking; a Cobra strike with no antidote or redress. Those quick
to anger, the bad tempered, the volatile, suffer from that shutting down of reason that prevents them from making good choices. Anger is debilitating and all consuming in a way that no other human emotion is (apart from grief). A quick temper is a terrible affliction. Hurtful words flung in anger burn deeply, the embers glowing forever. Fortunately I am not an angry person. I have been bad tempered at times but with age, along with wrinkles and the need to pee every five minutes, comes a couldn’t care less attitude. I really do not give a flying fig what anyone thinks of me and life is too short to stoke the coals of an adult tantrum. Injustice, Poverty, Discrimination are the only states that deservedly engender a burning rage in the human psyche, yet none of these is even considered a sin. Now that makes me angry. Toodle Pip!

contentedness of the present moment. It is true that there is pleasure in reminiscing over happier times, but most frequently we are dwelling on negative memories of the past and these leave us in an unhappy state because they lead to nostalgia, re-
gret or remorse. Nostalgia - Oh, why can’t I be 25 again? It was so wonder ful living in Austria. Why did Sam and I ever split up? Regret - I should have learned the piano. Why did I never go to Chile or visit New Zealand? I wish I had looked after my health better. Remorse - My parents did so much for me, but why was I so impatient with them? I should not have cheated that salesman out of his commission. Why have I always been so lazy? Similarly, there is pleasure in looking forward to a holiday, a reunion or an experience. Until the present moment the activity does not exist - and may never happen. Until it does, it consists of hopes and dreams. Again, it is more likely that we are worried about negative thoughts of the future. What can go wrong? The thoughts could result in disappointment, un-
ease or panic. Disappointment - Supposing I miss the flight, can’t find his house or the concert is cancelled? Have I left it too late to learn Italian? Unease - She must have missed the bus. It’s not very safe in that part of the city. The boss is not pleased with my per for mance. My job could be at risk. Panic - There’s only three weeks left and I have not prepared for the exam. This pain in my chest could be really serious. The message from Eckhart Tolle is that the present offers something different. If we can clear our minds of continuous compulsive thought and focus on where we are now, embracing the wonders of nature and counting our blessings, we should be more at peace within ourselves. In this way we should gain the most from life.

Making Fish & Chips at Home? I’ve always been of the opinion that you shouldn’t try to recreate that British favourite fish & chips at home. Well, after the last few times of taking some home and being so disappointed in the greasy, flabby battered fish and pasty coloured chips I thought I could do better. After rescuing a deep fat fryer from the shed I set about trying to find a recipe for the best batter. It wasn’t hard to find on the internet. Make your tartar sauce and get in the fridge. Chop some drained capers, gherkins, shallot and parsley and add to some mayonnaise. Add a squeeze of lemon, salt and pepper, mix well and put in the fridge until needed. For the beer bat-
ter mix 75ml of lager, 75ml sparkling water, 1tsp turmeric, 1 tsp baking powder, 50g of flour and 50g of cornflour and leave for 30 minutes. For the triple cooked chips peel and cut potatoes into as many chips as you feel you need. Put in some boiling, salted water for two minutes. Then drain on a rack. When dry, give them their second cooking for about 6 minutes in the fryer at 120’. Then drain and leave to one side. Dip your fish fillets (I used hake) in the batter and then put into the fryer at 150’ (Tip: Take the basket out!). When golden, drain. Keep warm in oven. Turn fryer up to 190’ and finish the chips. Golden? Crispy? Done!

THE face Fifi pulled when I used a syringe to squirt liquid vitamin C down her t h ro a t w a s a m i x t u re o f shock and disgust. Our mini-Pinscher shot me a look of pure hatred, then ran off to wash her mouth out with copious amounts of water. Now I’ve seen that look before, but only on humans who swallow a German liqueur called Jägermeister. It’s made with 56 different herbs and spices and tastes like really nasty cough mixture. Although some claim it has many health benefits, I discovered years ago that that it gives me horrible heartburn, so I avoid it like the plague. Round about the time that I began giving Fifi vitamin C - recommended by our vet for a gum infection - I noticed a newspaper ad for cheap ‘Jagaboms’ at a lo-

cal bar. Despite being pretty savvy when it comes to alcoholic drinks, I wondered what the hell they were. Google had the answer. ‘A Jägerbomb [note correct spelling] is usually sold with a can of Red Bull or an equivalent energy drink, poured into a pint glass and separately accompanied by Jägermeister in a shot glass. The glass of Jägermeister is then dropped into the Red Bull.’ Red Bull has a stimulating effect on the central nervous system
due to its high caffeine content. Alcohol, on the other hand, is a depressant and the combination can be very dangerous. In 2014 UK teenager Jayde Dinsdale suffered three cardiac arrests and ended up in a coma after necking several Jägerbombs. The combo is believed to have been invented in the US around 1997, and is called a Red Bull Blaster. Coincidentally, I then read a report from Switzerland, where the authorities decided that the
Jägermeister label - a stag with a cross between its antlers - could be regarded as ‘offensive’ to Christians, and the company was ordered not to apply the image to other products and services with which it is associated. Incensed by this stupid ruling by the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property, the company challenged the ban in court and won. Judges found that the label’s religious symbolism had long been lost in the mists of time. Now here comes the truly
weird aspect of the case: the origin of the image. it was inspired by an alleged encounter between a church-dodging Belgian geezer named Hubertus (or Hubert), born around 656. One Good Friday, instead of joining others in church, Hubert a wealthy duke, went a-hunting. As he was pursuing a magnificent stag in a forest, the animal turned to face its pursuer. Hubert was astounded at seeing a cross between its antlers - and even more so when it gave him a telling-off. In admonishing the hunter, the stag said: ‘Hubert, unless thou turnest to the Lord, and leadest a holy life, thou shalt quickly go down into hell.’ Well, this so terrified Hubertus that he went full-on godly, became a priest and was later declared the patron saint of hunters, mathematicians, opticians, and metalworkers. As Jägermeister was only invented in 1937, and Red Bull in 1987, Hubertus had no excuse that his hallucination was brought on by too many Jägerbombs.
