CONVENTION CALLED OFF

CONCERNS about the Coronavirus have prompted the cancellation of an Italian multinational’s annual conference in Calvia, according to Spanish press. The organisers of the Luxottica Group annual convention have decided to call off the event scheduled to take place in late March in two Magaluf hotels, reports said.

The company, which specialises in glasses and optical accessories, is based in the town of Agordo in the Veneto region, one of the areas of northern Italy with the highest number of Coronavirus cases. With more than 300 reported cases and 11 deaths by Wednesday, this week Italy became the European country worst affected by the outbreak and one of three Coronavirus focal points outside China, along with Iran and South Korea. event in Mallorca. The cancellation therefore stands to have a significant impact in terms of lost bookings for hotels, transport, trips and wining and dining. Luxottica has reportedly indicated that it will stage the event in 2021 at the same hotels. Meanwhile Balearic regional Tourism and Employment minister Iago Negueruela has expressed confidence the Coronavirus will not have a major effect on this year’s main holiday season. “From the tourism point of view, the government does not believe that due to the Coronavirus there is

any risk for the summer season in the Balearics,” Negueruela commented on Tuesday. The Balearics “are not in the same situation as the Canary Islands, which have their high season now, hence we will have to wait and see how events unfold,” he affirmed. At the same time he insisted “one has to give a message of calm,” explaining that the Balearic Health Department is “in complete coordination with the central government, and we will adopt the preventative measures which are agreed in Madrid.”

The American actor and producer’s Balearic island mini-break was his first visit to the island following the death of his father, the legendary Kirk Douglas. Michael’s posts on his Instagram account give an insight into how he spent his time in Mallorca. A selfie shows him sitting on a terrace overlooking the Mediterranean with the sun glinting on the sea and the message “Happy Friday! What’s everyone up to this weekend? CARNIVAL FUN MALLORCA was a sea of colourful fun at the weekend when many towns and villages staged big carnival processions. The sound of carnival rhythms pulsated through streets across the island as thousands turned out in fancy dress and elaborate costumes to take part in the parades and to make the most of the exuberant atmosphere and warm spring-like weather. Some 2,000 people took part in the traditional ‘Sa Rua’ parade in Palma on Sunday afternoon under a cloudless blue sky. Revellers danced and shimmied their way through the city centre as a jury watching from Plaza Mercat judged the best of the fanciful floats and carnival troupes for originality, artistic merit, creativity, the incorporation of live music, humour, satire and public interaction. Superheroes proved to be a particularly popular choice of fancy dress this year. Climate change was also a prominent theme, with troupes including ‘Every drop counts’ and the ‘No more smoke, care for the forest’ skaters. CARNIVAL RHYTHMS: Revellers make their way through the streets of Palma. and Russia among them, although they were not able to participate in the carnival competition. In the end the jury decided on ‘The Lion King’ float as the most deserving winner of the €450 prize for being the original and eye-catching. The ‘Fantasy Dragos’ were named top troupe. Also taking home a prize was the Soller train. Inca was just one of the localities staging its main carnival procession on Saturday. The parade of 21 troupes, 16 floats and more than 2,000 participants ended at the Plaça de la Font Vella in a party which continued well into the night.

Calvia’s parade attracted more than 1,000 participants. Again the environment was a topic for carnival troupes. Other highlights included Bolivian dances and a touch of Norse mythology in the form of Valkyries. In Sa Pobla meanwhile, this year’s carnival procession themes ranged from sexy firefighters to the mafia, while over in Manacor there were there Ninja turtle and cowboys and Indians. Soller’s Saturday afternoon seafront procession of more than 20 troupes and numerous individuals dressed up in all sorts of costumes proved to be a major attraction for both residents and tourists.

Pop-Rock contest THE Palma Pop-Rock contest is back on. City Culture and Social Well-being councillor Antoni Noguera said the competition has been “adapted to new times” in terms of format, categories and prizes. The semi-finals will be staged in May and the final on June 20.

Run down A 44-YEAR-OLD woman was run down and injured on the seafront road in Palma on Sunday afternoon. According to reports a car went into the victim when she was walking across a pedestrian crossing just after 5pm. She was taken by ambulance to the Son Espases hospital.

House prices HOUSEBUYERS in the Balearic Islands typically need 16.4 years’ of salary to pay for an average property, according to a report by the Sociedad de Tasacion property evalution association. The report put house price growth in the Balearics last year at 3.3 per cent.

Car fire FIREFIGHTERS were called out to a vehicle blaze at the Son Oms industrial estate in Palma on Monday afternoon. There were no reports anyone suffered injuries from the fire, but the car was seriously damaged. Palma police officers also attended the scene of the incident.

Body appears A BODY located by off-duty National Police officers in Palma bay waters on Saturday could be that of an Algerian who was trying to reach the Mallorca shore in a dinghy which ran into trouble making the crossing. The victim was reportedly wearing a lifesaving jacket.

Sad loss PALMA Local Police were mourning the loss of officer Malen Rodriguez, who sadly died of cardio-respiratory failure on Sunday at the age of just 52. The SUP Baleares police union posted its condolences on Twitter to Malen’s family and friends and the Palma force on her ‘tragic death.’

FEARS GROW GROWING fears about contracting the coronavirus have prompted a run on medical face masks at Spanish pharmacies. As reports of a dozen towns in northern Italy being put on lockdown hit the headlines and a third case of coronavirus was confirmed in Spain this week - an Italian from Lombardy holidaying in Tenerife - concerns about the possibility of the virus spreading in this country mean that pharmacies are running out of stock. The Euro Weekly News spoke to pharmacies up and down the Costas, who confirmed they have completely sold out of medical face masks. Their suggestion, they told EWN, was for members of the public concerned about protecting themselves against the possibility of infection from the coronavirus to put their names down on a waiting list. Another alternative is to try and find a medical face mask supplier online. On Monday the World Health Organisation Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesu said the virus has “pandemic potential,” but added, “Are we there yet? From our assessment, not yet.” “The key message that should give all countries hope, courage

and confidence is that this virus can be contained, indeed there are many countries that have done exactly that,” the WHO chief commented. Meanwhile, by Tuesday morning seven people in Italy had died from the disease and there were reports of at least 229 cases. The spike in infections prompted authorities in the Lombardy and Veneto regions to close schools, universities, businesses and restaurants, and to cancel public gatherings like sporting events. Here in Spain, the government was holding an inter-ministerial commission meeting on Tuesday to discuss the coronavirus and any measures which need to be adopted. “We want to be prepared for any eventuality,” commented Health Minister Salvador Illa. A day earlier the European Union said it was not considering closing internal borders. “Travel or trade restrictions are not recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO) or the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) at the moment,” said EU crisis management commissioner Janez Lenarčič.

SOLD OUT: Coronavirus fears have left Spanish pharmacies without face masks in stock. Symptoms and advice The main symptoms of the coronavirus are a high temperature, a cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. The WHO advice on basic protective measures is to wash hands frequently with soap or an alcoholbased hand rub, to try and avoid contact with people who are ill, and to avoid touching the eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands. Sneezes and coughs should be caught in a tissue and disposed of. Past virus scares The coronavirus is not the first to cause international concern in recent years. In 2003 the SARS coronavirus affected 26 countries and resulted in more than 8,000 cases. There was also the Ebola scare six years ago, and in November 2015 there was an outbreak of the Zika virus, which started in Brazil and spread to other parts of South and North America, as well as some Pacific islands and Southeast Asia.

Mugger cuffed

Top for boat rentals

POLICE cuffed a mugger who threatened a man with a knife in a Palma street. A plainclothes patrol on duty in the district surprised the young Colombian in Calle Manacor in the early hours of Tuesday morning after he stole the victim’s bag. The 26-year-old had first attracted the officers’ attention when they noticed he was peering inside parked cars. They decided to discreetly follow him, and so saw him go up behind a passer-by. The young man yanked his victim by the neck and threatened him with a knife he pulled out from his clothing. When the victim resisted there was a struggle and both ended up on the ground. Finally the assailant managed to grab the bag and made off down the street. The officers set off in in hot pursuit and managed to stop and arrest him.

THE Balearic Islands remain the most popular destination in Spain for Spaniards reserving boat rentals online, new figures show. The Nautal boat hire website reported that just over half of its bookings last year were to hire boats in the Balearics. Mallorca is the most popular of the islands with boating enthusiasts, followed by Ibiza and Menorca. Nautal also revealed that a high percentage of those reserving boats through the website are groups of between eight and 10 people. “This makes it more economical and means they can choose a bigger boat, while at the same time socialising and enjoying company on the sea,” commented Nautal Balearic Island specialist consultant Asegura Alba Salse. Groups of families and couples are more likely to go for catamarans, while bunches of friends more commonly opt for sailboats, she said.

Road works underway THE Mallorca government has started the works set out in the project to upgrade and improve traffic safety on a section of the Vieja de Bunyola highway running between Palma and Marratxi. The €1.7 million works on the 335-metre long stretch of road are expected to take eight months to complete. At the same time, a cycle lane will be added, along with garden zones and contention walls, a new roundabout with low consumption lighting and new zones for pedestrians, among other measures.

THE Balearic Government is calling on the regional port authority not to confirm new licences for cruise ships to dock at Palma. Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, regional Tourism minister Iago Negueruela and Environment minister Miquel Mir said the licence suspension would come into effect from the beginning of January 2022. The aim, they explained, is to have sufficient time to continue negotiations with the sector to reach an agreement which allows for regulating cruise ship activity, resulting in ‘effective’ and ‘real staggering’ of cruise liner dockings at the Mallorca capital port. Negueruela said that since last July there have been talks at the “highest level” between both regional government departments, Palma City Council, the Autoridad Portuaria de Baleares and the International Association of Cruise Lines.

Tragic accident A MAN died after a car went into him while he was walking on the Andratx motorway near to Sant Agusti in the early hours of Sunday morning. According to reports a British driver was taking his son to Palma airport when the accident occurred. It was also reported that the driver tested negative for drugs or alcohol, and that the 30-year old-victim, a prison officer from Logroño who moved to Mallorca in September, had not been wearing reflective clothing or carry-

Feminist movement action THE Feminist Movement of Mallorca has promised strong action to mark International Women’s Day. Speaking at the presentation of the agenda of ‘eco-feminist and anti-fascist’ activities lined up by different entities and collectives to coincide with International Woman’s Day on Sunday March 8, the island’s feminist movement spokesperson Sandra Serra promised this year would see “the most demands ever.” Serra highlighted the call to form a feminist chain at the courts on Via Alemania at 12 noon on Saturday February 29 “given that the judicial institutions are the most patriarchal. “With this chain we will demand that they apply the Constitutional Law on Complete Protection Measures against Gender Violence,” she said. On International Women’s Day itself there will be a demonstration in Palma under the banner ‘Destruye el Patriarcado, no el planeta’ (Destroy the Patriarchy, not the planet). The march will start in Plaza España and will end up at the Parc de la Mar, where this year’s manifesto will be read out. Another of the movement’s spokespersons, Margalida Bover,

POLICE made six arrests for robbery in Palma over the weekend. In one incident officers detained two thieves who had just mugged a young man on the seafront promenade at 3am on Saturday. They had grabbed the victim by the arm and threatened to whack him with a bottle. A police patrol on duty in the area managed to track down and arrest the pair a short time afterwards. The following night po-

lice cuffed two youngsters as they were nicking items from the interior of a vehicle parked along the seafront. Officers seized a crowbar the delinquents used to get into the cars. Then on Monday night police surprised two other lads just after they smashed a car window. In the same weekend police arrested a man on charges of receiving stolen goods after discovering he was carrying a mobile phone which had been robbed.

RESIDENT DROP: Soller’s population has gone down in recent years.

Foreigners boost population growth FOREIGNERS have boosted population growth in the Balearic Islands over the last two decades. Figures from the National Institute of Statistics reveal that in 1999 the number of registered foreign residents on the islands was 45,017, representing just 5.4 per cent of the Balearics’ total population of 821,820. Twenty years on the number of nonSpanish inhabitants had shot up to 204,987, accounting for 17.8 per cent of the 1,149,460 people living on the islands. In 2018 12,126 new foreign residents arrived. Nevertheless, some municipalities in Mallorca

have experienced a reduction in population in recent years. Soller stands out for a 336 drop in resident numbers since 2018, or 2.4 per cent of the population. Also seeing inhabitant numbers decline have been Santa Mara (-110) Fornalutx (-18), Buger (down four, and Estellencs and Deia, who were each down three). The Mallorcan municipalities with the highest percentage of nonSpanish residents are Calvia (31 per cent), and Deia (30 per cent), while Marratxi has the lowest with just 5 per cent of the total.

A STUDY has identified what could be the origins of the earliest settlers on Mallorca: shepherds from the steppes of Eastern Europe. “Some 4,000 years ago, the arrival of peoples from the steppes to the Iberian Peninsula set off a wave of genetic and social changes. It replaced 40 per cent of the local population and nearly 100 per cent of the paternal lines. “This combination of changes could have resulted in the settlement of the Balearic Islands. This is what is suggested by an extensive international genetic study, which has revealed that the oldest inhabitants of the Balearics descent from Iberian settlers with the genetic heritage of Eastern European shepherds,” the CSIC Superior Centre of Scientific Investigations commented on social media. A team of researchers managed to recover the genome of the remains of three sets of human remains on the islands. One 4,300year- old set was from Cova des Moro in Mallorca, one from Formentera and one from Menorca in the Naveta de Tudons, one of the

The study also analysed 58 genomes from Sicily and Sardinia dated from 5000BC to the year 1000 in order to reconstruct the oldest genomic sequences in the Western Mediterranean. CSIC explained that the work supported archaeological evidence that there were contacts between continental Europe, Africa and the islands of the Western Mediterranean in the Bronze Age. “The archaeological and genetic evidence agree that the Bronze Age was a period of unprecedented cultural exchange. This study confirms that the Mediterranean

was the first highway, a place of communication and trade between the peoples bathed by its waters,” maintained study co-author Carles Lalueza-Fox. Given that the Balearic Islands can be seen from some points of the Catalan coast, the CSIC researcher believes it possible that “some local merchants were tempted to explore.” The study was led by Harvard University, with the participation of the IBE Institute of Evolutionary Biology (a mixed CSIC and Pompeu Fabra University centre), the results of which have been published in the magazine Nature Ecology and Evolution.

Thieves collared PALMA police have arrested a 21-year-old Moroccan man and 19year-old Spanish woman suspected of breaking into homes around Mal-

lorca to steal jewellery. The authorities have connected the pair to a theft from a property in Sant Jordi in Palma, and said the young man was

known to have operated in Manacor, Santanyi, Vilafranca de Bonany, Inca, Felanitx, Algaida, Arta, Binissalem and Sa Pobla. According to police the young woman had sold many items of jewellery with a combined value of €7,000 at different locations between December and mid-February. During their investigations officers found indications that the sold jewellery and other pieces they had in their possession could have been stolen from various homes around the island. The police seized several items and are working on identifying the legitimate owners. The pieces recovered included wedding rings, gold bracelets and necklaces, crosses and a gold plaque.

Stabbing arrest A 54-YEAR-OLD is under arrest for stabbing another man during a brawl at the entrance to a Palma games hall in the early hours of Sunday. The 39-year-old victim was hospitalised and was reported to be in a serious condition after he was knifed in the stomach. Police were alerted to the stabbing incident by a number of calls from members of the public. When officers arrived they found the victim with his clothes covered in blood and immediately called an ambulance. Witnesses reported that the aggressor was still in the area. Officers caught up with and identified the suspect. They

found a knife in his back trouser pocket. Spanish press said he admitted to the stabbing, saying it was because he had been pushed. According to Spanish media the detainee had been bothering customers and staff at the establishment in the Calle Sindicat area, daring them to take him on in a fight. When he had a go at a female employee who told him to watch his behaviour, the victim attracted his attention and the two men stepped outside, where they carried on arguing and that’s when the stabbing allegedly took place. The 54-year-old is now facing charges of attempted homicide.

Cleaning up PALMA City Council has cleaned up more than 2,600 areas where vandals had daubed or sprayed paint. The extensive clean-up operation began back in July, and over the last eight months the council’s Infrastructure department and the Emaya municipal company have removed vandals’ work from children’s play areas, municipal parks, walls and urban furniture. Palma mayor Jose Hila went to see one of the cleaning teams in action this week. He took the opportunity to appeal to the public for “civic behaviour and to act with responsibility” to keep the Mallorca capital looking at its best.

ATTRACTION: Some 10,000 people visited the ship while it was docked in Palma. THE Andalucia Galleon has bid farewell to Mallorca. The vessel set sail from the island on Monday after 10 days docked at the Club de Mar in Palma, during which time it attracted 10,000 visitors. The 55-metre long, seven sail wooden ship is a replica of a Spanish galleon dating back to the 17th century, which was sponsored and built by the Junta de Andalucia and the Nao Victoria Foundation to promote the Guadalquivir River His-

tory project, and was a feature of the Spain Pavillion at the Shanghai 2010 Expo. For centuries galleons like this connected Spain with the Americas and the Pacific Ocean. Visitors to the Andalucia Galleon were able to take a look around its five decks and discover the routes ships like this would have taken, what life would have been like on board, the hardships and the kind of merchandise and treasures it would have transported.

Short film contest THE fourth edition of the Port Adriano short film competition is up and running. Amateur and professional filmmakers have until May 17 to present works no more than five minutes in length on a theme of their choosing. Entrants can either choose to opt for the contest’s classic format, which demands that at least 25 per cent of the film is shot around Port Adriano, or go for the ‘Tripulante’ prize, which allows filming outside the area, but which must in-

clude a reference to Port Adriano, whether via images or verbally with the sentence ‘Port Adriano, un puerto deportivo en Mallorca’ (Port Adriano, a marina in Mallorca). There are 10 different awards and a total of €11,000 in prize money up for grabs. There have been more than 150 participants in past editions of the competition, now considered an important event in Mallorca’s annual cultural calendar.

THE Mallorca government has presented its calendar of sporting events for 2020. Consell de Mallorca President Catalina Cladera and Tourism and Sports councillor Andres Sierra headed the presentation staged earlier this week at the island administration’s offices. They revealed a line-up of activities for the year which marks the 25th anniversary of the delegation of responsibilities for the area. Among the novelties are four activities aimed at families and children. The ‘Senderisme i Serra’ is all about hiking routes in the Tramuntana mountains, while the ‘Jornades Generacionals 3G’ is aimed at bringing together three generations: grandparents, parents and children. The idea of ‘Cicloturisme actiu’ is to combine sport and sustainable mobility, and ‘Jugam al Nadal’ is to celebrate the federations with agreements with the Consell. The presentation, which was attended by representatives from sports clubs and federations, included the showing of the audiovisual work ‘La victoria de los valores’ (The victory of values).

Cycling festival confirmed THE second edition of the Mallorca Cycling Festival has been confirmed. The event will take place in Consell on October 2, 3 and 4. Last year’s festival was a clear success, attracting 15,000 visitors and 500 participants in the various trials for both adults and children. There were also exhibitions, demobikes and more than 50 stands. The Mallorca Cycling Festival will be promoted at the Italian Bike Festival and

the Bike Show in Birmingham, as well as at other international fairs. Attractions for pedal power enthusiasts will include a gathering of Balearic Island cycling groups and clubs, the Vinyet Ciclocross Race and the Pump Track Show. There will also be the Abus Boc Gravel Ride to discover unknown Mallorca. Countdown on to review UK pension options before Brexit After four years of uncertainty, we can now expect Brexit to start taking effect after the transition period ends on 31 December 2020. While nothing should change for UK nationals living in Spain until then, the countdown is on to prepare. Once the UK sheds its EU obligations - including freedom of movement for capital - the government gains more scope to tax UK nationals abroad. Pensions are a likely target. Transferring your pension abroad Residents in Spain can currently move UK pensions to a Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS) free of any personal tax. Doing this can unlock several advantages, such as consolidating several pensions under one roof, gaining flexibility to take your pension in the currency you need, and

freedom to pass benefits to heirs other than your spouse. Once transferred, funds would be protected from UK lifetime allowance charges, as well as future changes to UK pension rules. However, the UK imposes tax penalties of 25% on transfers to a QROPS outside the EU/European Economic Area (EEA). There are expectations that the UK may widen this taxation net to include EU/EEA-based QROPS once the transition period ends in

December. This could be easily done since the UK legislation is already drafted to catch all pension transfers; the government would just need to remove the EU/EEA exclusion to make this happen. As such, time may be limited to transfer without tax penalties. Pension transfers can take several months to process, so if you decide that transferring is right for you, act soon. The benefits of a QROPS can vary greatly between providers and jurisdictions, however, so take specialist advice to navigate the complex options and determine the most suitable solution for you. Leaving your pensions in the UK Of course, you could do nothing and access your UK pension from Spain. If you have a ‘defined contribution’ (‘money purchase’) pension, current options include taking

cash, receiving a regular income (drawdown) or purchasing a lifetime income (annuity). You cannot usually access ‘defined benefit’ (‘final salary’) pensions as cash; instead you receive a regular income throughout retirement. While you could transfer to a defined contribution scheme for more flexible access, this is likely to be less beneficial than receiving a guaranteed income for life. Note that UK pension payments are usually only paid in Sterling. If you are living in Spain and your spending is in Euros, you could find that conversion fees and the variable exchange rate reduces the value of your pension income. Remember also that UK pensions remain subject to UK rules, which can change at any time. UK funds are also vulnerable to lifetime allowance penalties of 25%/55% when combined pension benefits exceed £1.055 million.

Your pension is likely to be central to your long-term financial security, so it is crucial to proceed with care and take regulated advice. An adviser with cross-border expertise is best placed to help you establish the best approach for you and your family’s particular situation in Spain. While there is no one-size-fits all answer for what to do with your pension, everyone can benefit from reviewing their arrangements as early as possible in 2020, before Brexit reshapes the landscape. Tobacco sales plummet TOBACCO sales plummeted 55 per cent in 15 years in the Balearic Islands. Figures from the Tobacco Market Commissioner reveal the massive drop in sales in the islands from 2005 following approval of the Anti-Tobacco Law. In fact, the Balearics registered the second biggest decrease in tobacco sales of any region in Spain,

beaten only by Andalucia, where they went down by just over 57 per cent during the same period. At national level, sales of cigarettes fell back nearly 52 per cent between 2005 and 2019. The Anti-Tobacco Law was passed in 2005, but did not come into effect until January 1, 2006. It was then reformed in 2011 in order to increase the re-

strictions, which led to a further drop in cigarette purchases. The reforms banned smoking from any public space which is not outdoor. It also prohibited the broadcast of programmes or images with presenters or their guests smoking or referring directly or indirectly to tobacco products on all form of communication.

What to do in the event of an emergency in Spain Living in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics.

IN Spain there are two groups which most people would understand as being ‘the police.’ The National Police (Policía Nacional) who have jurisdiction in the towns and cities and the Guardia Civil outside the towns and cities. The Local Police are employed by town halls; they basically deal with property found, and enforce local laws. Whilst they have a power of arrest, when exercised they must take the arrested person to the National Police or Guardia Civil according to where the c r i m e t o o k place. National Police and the Guardia Civil deal with all crimes, missing persons etc in their jurisdiction. The National Police also deal with all applications for immigration paperwork, NIEs, EU Citizens Registration and for non EU nationals, Residencia, etc. Throughout Europe the general number for all emergencies is 112. In Spain the operators speak English, French, German and Italian, in addition to Spanish and will liaise with the emergency services when the caller does not speak Spanish. No area code is needed and the number can be called from any phone, including

mobiles even those without a Spanish SIM card or any credit. You can also fax or SMS 112. The 24 hours national emergency numbers for Spanish speakers are: 091 - police, 061 - health emergencies 080 - firefighters. By calling 902 102 112, one can give details of certain crimes, including:burglaries, car theft, theft or loss of documents or belongings. The service is available in English 9am to 9pm seven days a week, and 9am to 3pm in French, German and Italian. Having given details, you must go to the National Police station which you nominate, within 48 hours to make the report using the information supplied on the telephone. In the case of robbery, where threat or force has been used, victims should call 112 for police attendance, or go to the police station to make a report. Other useful number are - 016, to report instances of gender violence. For problems at sea, the Maritime Rescue Service (Salvamento Seguridad Maritmo) can be contacted on 900 202 202, and the Red Cross (Cruz Rojo) on 902 222 292. There is also a Red Cross 24-hour helpline 900 100 333.

No one’s laughing now

WHY is everyone still screaming that Britain needs more diversity? The UK is now recognised as one of the most diverse nations on the planet. Instead of wasting energy by constantly complaining, why don’t those affected welcome this situation with open arms and start acting with some positivity? As Shakespeare observed; ‘Methinks thou doth protest too much.’ I can’t help becoming even more convinced that those who continue to condemn British society actually thrive on animosity, refusing to accept the truth in case they are deprived of something to vent their hatred on! Let’s just have a brief look at these ‘lack of UK diversity’ accusations. To date, with very few exceptions, every family based commercial on British TV depicts a mixed marriage. Practically all the ads that use a number of actors, portray an (often ludicrous) cross section of casts with ethnic backgrounds. Neither of these situations is a true reflection of life across the UK and is therefore either a minority appeaser, or some form of majority brainwashing - and is also by its very definition blatantly racist! The ‘far right’ was initially blamed as instigators of this UK dissent, and was quite rightly chastised for it. Unfortunately, with the blatant, unchecked reversed racism of ‘comedi-

ans’ like Nish Kumar, plus the disgraceful racist lyrics and comments of ‘Rapper Dave’ at the awful Brit awards, exponents of the not-so far right are actually beginning to think those a bit ‘further over’ may have had a point. Last week the Bafta awards were also criticised for not including enough diversity among the winners. Well, possibly there weren’t enough who were worthy of awards! We cannot fall into the trap of favouring people simply because of their ethnic heritage or gender. If we do, we will not only lower our standards, but also be in real danger of provoking even further disquiet by denying recognition of those who may be far more deserving. This whole diversity and ‘snowflake’ driven human rights situation is sowing seeds of discontent that, if unchecked, will continue to grow and flourish into a full scale civil conflict that could leave large sections of the UK’s major cities resembling Beirut. BACK in the UK re cently, I was sitting on a train, staring at the man opposite me. Not in that way, promise! In a looking-at-what-he-was-absentmindedly-doing way. The embarrassing thing was that the whole row of seats would start vibrating in the darkness, mak-

ing me wonder what the heck people were making of it all... And strategies for man-spreaders? First carefully study your spreader. If he’s a clear threat or simply obese, then abort; your project’s derailed. Now, catching your target offguard may work, as women almost never react or do anything in this situation. Above all, don’t give way - ideally a bag or something similar acting as a firm buffer between you, as insistent female proximity to a leg will invariably end up with him thinking he’s being hit on. All this can lead to a silent pressure battle between the pair of you until one backs down. Not the best solution, admittedly. GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY IN the words of the inimitable Andy Williams, where do I begin? Perhaps allow me to give a brief insight into my life, a life that’s been colourful, to say the least. Filled with drama, some of it good, and of course some bad. It was the late 90’s, I was living between London and my native Dublin, a time when it seemed that life for a 23-yearold me, was filled with little other than party filled nights, and long recovery lunches at places like Daphne’s, San Lorenzo or the now defunct Oriel on Sloane Square. Oriel was our HQ, a place where we would inevitably meet up to dissect the previous night, before making plans for the next. In a way, we were the original Made in Chelsea, except less scripted and without a camera crew. My circle of friends were living a similar existence, showing up at various glamorous events, night after night, photographed for Bystander or the Daily Mail, falling into an awaiting car, to dance until dawn at Annabel’s, The Met Bar, or L’Equipe Anglais. I’d return to Dublin in search of R&R, only to find there was none. Dublin, like London was buzzing, and set to embark on a period of time known as the Celtic Tiger. A glorious time of excess on every level, where it was seen as normal to down cases of vintage Bollinger over lunch, before nipping, or possibly tripping to Gucci to pick up something new for the night ahead. It was all good fun, for a select few, who called each other la famiglia. One night at a party during London Fashion Week, I was chatting with my dear friend, the late Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, who had just signed a contract with the Sunday Times to write a weekly diary style column. The idea being, her antics would be available for readers to enjoy in full colour, complete with a photo at some event or another. She joked it would be the perfect job for me and within weeks, I was contacted by the editor of the Irish edition of the paper, asking if I would consider writing a similar style diary

Hello, I’m Gavin Lambe-Murphy called I’m It. Tara was the It Girl, and overnight, I was the It Boy. I engaged a PR team to launch myself as a public figure. At the time Ireland was not clued up about such characters and a press release sent out by my agents, was met with laughter, as well as a string of media coverage, ironically making me a household name. My life changed, the parties continued, the pace was fast, but now suddenly people were recognising me on the street and requests for interviews and television appearances were becoming more frequent. Once thrust into the media spotlight, my life spiralled somewhat and while PR firms wanted me to be seen promoting their clients - from sports cars, to designer goods and such, I became so inundated, that I required an agent in Ireland as well as the UK. For many it was hard to believe that the guy who was so in demand and apparently the life and soul of the party, was in fact terribly shy and somewhat lost. It was at this time that I went down a wrong road and began taking cocaine, as a way to counteract my shyness and be ‘on form’ 24/7. Without realising it, my drug habit had taken over my life and at the height of my fame I was taking up to four grams of coke a day, not eating and drinking way too much alcohol. Not exactly a good place to be considering how public my life had become. I took part in numerous reality TV shows; Young Posh & Loaded on ITV1, Celebrity Five Go Dating on Channel 4, Celebrity Farm on RTE 1, to name a few. All of which, apart from The Farm, were and remain a total blur. Subsequently, my world came crashing down due to my addiction and I landed in rehab. Following which, I vanished from the scene and lived in Italy, France and more recently Monaco. I am clean of drugs since 2003, and have written a novel, opened a restaurant and taken time to discover who I am and what makes me happy. This time last year, I decided that Marbella may be a place that would be a good fit. One year on, and I must say, each day it makes me smile. I believe it still has much to show me, and I have much to show it. I shall be writing a weekly column for Euro weekly News starting next week, so I have returned to do something I love. SHOPPING SPREE DEAR Euro Weekly, What a pleasure to read about the lucky lady who won the queen for a day shopping prize in Torremolinos. She was such a character in the video you posted on your Facebook page, it must really have made a difference in her life. I do worry about her booking a trip to China though! A firm hand Dear EWN, Somebody recently wrote in about moving back to London and being worried about the violence. I understand the reasons for going back but it did make me think, I have never in my time in Spain seen any violence. No robberies, no gangs and no knives. I feel safe here than in my home town. I do understand that the police take a pretty strong stance when it comes to catching people in the act ‘a heavy hand’ and maybe that is what should happen in the UK. By all means, if my son had committed a crime I wouldn’t mind if the police gave him a slap round the ear or a kick up the bum. Would that slow down the kids in the UK? I guess it comes down to respect, the kids in Spain respect and fear the police, whereas the people in the UK have lost their respect for the police. Is there any way back? Power of equality MORE controversy has hit the recent awards ceremonies, this time in the world of music. Long-running music magazine NME and the Brit awards are both in the headlines with claims and acts of misogyny and sexism. With more women than ever displaying success in the music industry, artists like Charli XCX and Ella Eyre have hit out at the event for having male and female nominees competing in separate categories. Charli XCX criticised the ceremony for making the women feel like a ‘subplot’ or ‘warm-up act’ for their male counterparts. The Album of the Year category helps to show further evidence of the situation by not featuring a single female nominee, as Harry Styles and Lewis Capaldi go up against Stormzy, Michael Kiwanuka, and Dave for the accolade. The situation at the NME awards was a new low for the business. With British rapper, Slowthai set to win the ‘Hero of the Year’ award he shot himself in the foot by quickly disgracing himself and making leering comments to host and comic Katherine Ryan on stage. The incident provoked an audience member to heckle Slowthai as ‘misogynist’ during his acceptance speech to which the rapper responded by throwing his drink into the crowd and almost starting a fight. These high profile incidences are a reminder of the need for music industry mindfulness and vigilance.

SPAIN is cracking down on badly behaved Brits who could face £50k fines So some 18­year­old lads arrive in Spain on their first ever time abroad, on an all­inclusive holiday that cost €200 (because the hotel is garbage). Straight to the bar and G&Ts. A cheap local paint stripper gin served up in a measure four times as big as anything they’ve ever experienced. They drink three drinks each, not that much, and are drunk and puke in the flower bed. Everyone screams scumbags. Yes the Brits overdo it, of course they do, but the Spanish have designed these resorts around it, the people of Ibiza and Mallorca have become massively wealthy because of it. SUZANNE MANNERS WRATH. The least fluffy of all the deadly sins (apart from murder but we won’t go there) and the one most likely to get us into trouble. Humans by their nature are pretty volatile, anger fuelled, tantrum tickling creatures who strut and strop their hour upon the stage in paroxysms of both sound and fury. My own father had a tendency to erupt at the least provocation bellowing and cursing all and sundry and sometimes hurling clocks (a story for another time) and random unsecured objects unfortunate enough to be in his path. John Knox the minister was renowned for his explosive tirades against Mary Tudor, Elizabeth the First, Mary Queen of Scots, courtiers, Catholics, relics and women in general. Mostly nailed to church doors from the safety of his refuge in Geneva (a self imposed exile to enable him to continue being a

Wrath: The Sin of Losing It

WRATH: John Knox was renowned for his explosive tirades against Mary. bit shouty with Mary who wasn’t known for her tolerance). It was Knox who coined the phrase ‘monstrous regiment’ to describe the female monarchs of

the age. His anger stemmed mostly from the outrageous supposition that women could actually rule over men... who were a little sensitive at this time

(check out Tudor codpieces!). Throughout history wars, conflicts and all manner of nasty events have been caused by one person’s anger (or indeed group’s... anger is after all highly contagious) against another, some imagined slur or lack of respect induces a tantrum in the mighty and then all hell breaks loose. Henry the Eighth, the least chilled monarch, was famous for his propensity to huffily send friends and family to the block (imagine how stressful a place the English court must have been… you really wouldn’t want to break those eggshells). Wrath, or anger if you prefer, boils the blood and shuts down the reasoning part of the brain. The red mist really does descend and blind with rage is an actual human condition blocking all thought and care. Many foul deeds have been committed in anger the lashing out both momentary and unthinking; a Cobra strike with no antidote or redress. Those quick

to anger, the bad tempered, the volatile, suffer from that shutting down of reason that prevents them from making good choices. Anger is debilitating and all consuming in a way that no other human emotion is (apart from grief). A quick temper is a terrible affliction. Hurtful words flung in anger burn deeply, the embers glowing forever. Fortunately I am not an angry person. I have been bad tempered at times but with age, along with wrinkles and the need to pee every five minutes, comes a couldn’t care less attitude. I really do not give a flying fig what anyone thinks of me and life is too short to stoke the coals of an adult tantrum. Injustice, Poverty, Discrimination are the only states that deservedly engender a burning rage in the human psyche, yet none of these is even considered a sin. Now that makes me angry. Toodle Pip!

MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE MY name is Willow - I am a 28-yearold mother living and working on the Costa del Sol. I’m here wanting to tell you my story of survival and what it’s like living with a mental illness. I’m hoping that by telling you my story and the challenges I go through on a daily basis it will not only inspire you but also give you that little bit of HOPE to carry on fighting this uphill battle and to not feel alone. I’ve suffered from it for most of my life. Looking back I can pinpoint exactly when I knew that I was different. I now look back and gently laugh at all the people who thought I had the perfect life, that I was a young, talented and bubbly person. Unbeknownst to them, I was terrorised by my demons. Having been diagnosed with Bipolar and Anxiety disorder nearly six years ago, I know that there is not one aspect of my life that has gone untouched by this mental illness. My bipolar and anxiety disorder were triggered by a sexual attack which took place eight years ago. A few weeks after the attack, it had all just gotten too much and I decided to end my life - I was too tired to carry on fighting. I was found by my mum and dad with minutes left to spare and rushed by ambulance to hospital. I was quizzed about why did I want to take my life, that I had a loving family, I was young and had my whole life ahead of me. I could see people looking at me and thinking … Why? The truth is, when you hit such a low point, you don’t think about anyone else, you don’t feel. I felt numb, I didn’t care about anything. For months after the attack, I suffered horrific nightmares and I was unable to sleep alone. I obsessively thought I was being followed or looked at. I suffered panic attacks on a daily basis. I lost all ability to concentrate or even complete simple tasks, often feeling disoriented, forgetting where, or who I was. I felt as if I had completely lost my mind. For a time, I managed to keep it together on the outside trying not to show

what I was going through, but it’s simply the worst thing you can do, you lose control on reality. What is real? Who is real? You end up believing your own lies. You convince yourself you’re okay when you are not. I started self harming, thinking that if I hurt myself harder than my thoughts were hurting me, then maybe I couldn’t be hurt. The horrifying thing is, I found relief in self harming, not realising the damage it does to you. Not only are you left with scars on your skin, but the damage it does to you psychologically is the deepest scar of all. With several hospital visits and stays in different psychiatric wards I was diagnosed with reactive depression and Borderline Personality Disorder due to the sexual attack I had suffered. I slowly gained trust in the doctors, I was able to tell them what was happening, how I was feeling, not realising that I had actually been suffering way before the sexual attack took place. Taking medication and undergoing therapy marked the turning point in recovering from my mental breakdown. For me there is no cure, no final healing. I will never be free of bipolar. BUT there are things that I can do to ensure that I never have to suffer as I did before being diagnosed. I’m no longer a prisoner of my illness and I would not be here today had I not had the proper diagnosis and treatment. The most important thing to know is that it’s never too late to seek help and speak out. Nobody should suffer alone with this There are still days I simply do not function and there are relapses that set me back. But I have got to know myself, know my mind and know the triggers. I have my little daily routines that I have to stick to which allow me to lead a normal life. I’ve also learnt than on the days it gets too much for me, to give in, there is no harm in telling yourself to stop, slow down, ride through it as best as you can. Everything in this life is passing. Just ride it out. Before you know it, you wake up and it’s a new day, a new dawn. Just hold on, hold to that little bit of hope and don’t let go of it. The FCO publish country by country health and safety advice that’s updated regularly and includes any locations where they advise against travel. However, if this is your disinclination to travel, rather than complying with FCO, or WHO restrictions, then most Travel Insurance policies won’t cover you for lost holiday or cancellation costs. All policies are different so check with your provider. What are your travel options? If you want to cancel your trip and don’t think you’ll be covered by your travel insurance,

it’s worth checking with your tour operator or airline. They can provide advice on your holiday and what plans they have in place to help. You may have options like changing your destination to somewhere safer, or your trip dates. In the circumstances, travel providers may be more flexible in facilitating amendments. Slam in the Lamb

I’VE cooked and eaten a lot of veg lately. I’ve even had a couple of my carnivorous friends tell me I’ve been letting down the flesh eaters. Well, this week I returned to meat in a big way. I’ve had some tasty fried chicken and also indulged my love for offal with some devilled kidneys and crispy fried pigs ears with a spicy mayo. But most popular in my house was lamb chops (chuletas) with seared lettuce and peas. The creamy Dijon mustard and crème fraiche sauce made a change from gravy with lamb. Season the lamb chops with salt and pepper and put under a hot grill. Cook for two or three minutes on each side until they are to

your liking. Then keep warm. Heat a pan until hot and then add some olive oil and put in two little gem lettuces that have been quartered lengthways. Using lettuce as a cooked vegetable is a good idea and one I am adopting! Sear the lettuce until charred on all sides. Add about 250ml of beef stock. Bring to the boil then turn down to simmer. Add a cup of frozen peas and some torn fresh mint. Once reduced by about half, add a small cube of butter, a large dollop of crème fraiche (or double cream if feeling carefree and indulgent!) and a teaspoon of Dijon mustard. Season to taste and pour over the chops. Finish with some more fresh mint and enjoy.

Working in the area or having family nearby reinforces their reasoning for buying locally. All the above is a good reason for having a selling agent. The best ones will ask all the right questions for you, and hopefully, only bring people serious about buying.

I’d sooner die than change my diet BARRY DUKE BACK in 2009, I hobbled into my local health centre in Brighton, and complained to my GP about the severe pain I’d developed in my right knee. He diagnosed arthritis and prescribed medication. But he warned me to go easy on the tablets as persistent use could cause other problems. ‘So what must I do to ease the pain permanently?’ I asked. His terse reply was: ‘Move to a warmer climate.’ So, in 2010 I did. Within months the pain disappeared and, thanks to my enthusiastic embrace of the Mediterranean diet something many salad-dodging Brits refer to as ‘foreign muck’ because it excludes all the grease that comes with traditional fry-ups - I lost weight and was healthier at 65 than I’d ever been in my life. About a year later I went to a

However, I noticed on the three-page print-out the word ‘gota’ which had been ringed in red by a consultant. On querying it, he explained I had gout. For those who don’t know what gout is, here’s a definition from the Mayo Clinic: ‘Gout is a common and complex form of arthritis

It’s characterised by sudden, severe attacks of pain, swelling, redness and tenderness in the joints, often the joint at the base of the big toe.’ I told the consultant that, apart from the now-vanished arthritic knee, I was totally pain-free. ‘Ah well,’ he nonchalantly replied, ‘It will come, sooner or later.’ And it did. I got out of bed one morning with an excruciating pain in my big right toe, and, because I was

unable to walk, got a cab to the nearest pharmacy and asked if they had anything that would ease the pain. I was given some capsules called Acoxxel, which worked a treat. Then, earlier this month, the condition flared up again - on the day I had to have our beloved terrier Bijou euthanised. Noticing I was limping, our vet Natalia asked me what the problem was. When I said gout she asked

whether I ate tomatoes. As it happens, yes. In industrial quantities! They form a large part of my diet - a diet that makes Spain the world’s healthiest country. (Britain comes in at No 19, according to a World Health Organisation survey published last February). ‘We’ll, you’ve got to stop eating them. Also cut out all shellfish,’ she advised. I was appalled. I was even more horrified when I turned to Google to see what triggers gout. Sure enough, tomatoes were listed, along with many other of my favourites foods including anchovies. These form the basis of my favourite cream cheese and and anchovy sandwiches, smothered with black pepper, which I’ve been enjoying for 50 years. In fact, all shellfish are a no-no. Ditto beef and every variety of fish except salmon. Also to be avoided is beer and whisky. So, in effect, I need to abandon my Mediterranean diet and give up booze. The Pope will come out as gay before that ever happens.

Ride the electric horse FORD has launched its new Mustang Mach-E electric crossover in London as the spearhead of a drive to electrify its UK fleet. The Mach-E is Ford’s first volume-production battery electric vehicle and the flagship for the launch of 18 mildand full-hybrid new models scheduled for launch by the end of 2021. The styling strongly links the EV to the regular Mustang, reflected in

features such as the badge and front and rear lights, as well as several lines along the bodywork. The car lacks conventional door handles, instead featuring buttons that pop open the doors and small holds protruding from the front doors. Owners can use their smartphones as keys, or use a keypad built into the B-pillar. The Mustang Mach-E sports a more radical interior, with a wide dashboard featuring a built-in soundbar. The dash is dominated

by a 15.5” touchscreen and a 10.2” digital cluster for the driver, while the steering wheel retains a number of physical controls. The model will initially be launched with two battery pack sizes and three power outputs. The entry-level version will feature a single motor driving the rear wheels, with either a 75kWh battery and 254bhp motor or a 99kWh battery and 285bhp motor. Both produce 307lb ft, with a

claimed 0-62mph time of under eight seconds and WLTP range of around 280 and 370 miles respectively. The twin-motor all-wheel-drive version is offered with a 75kWh battery and 254bhp, or 99kWh and 332bhp. Both versions provide 429lb ft and a sub-seven-second 0-62mph time, with estimated ranges of 260 and 335 miles. Charging is available through an AC home charger or via DC fast chargers at up to 150kW.

The rear-wheel-drive models will sit on 18” wheels, with 19” wheels for all-wheel-drive versions. Twinmotor machines gain adaptive LED headlights and red brake callipers, while limited-edition First Edition models also get a panoramic roof. The Mustang Mach-E is being built in Mexico and is available to order now and will be sold exclusively online, with first deliveries expected around October next year.

Japanese Jazz HONDA says its new Jazz, to be sold exclusively as a hybrid, will “raise the bar in terms of comfort and driver enjoyment.” The Jazz is the first in Honda’s current line-up to go hybrid-only, with other models soon to follow suit. The company announced last year that all of its combustion-engined models in Europe will be offered with hybrid powertrains by 2022. The new hybrid has remained familiar enough to appeal to those loyal owners, while also bringing in new people to Honda’s

entry-level model. The styling is a minor evolution over the previous model but with more curved lines and redesigned lights, bumpers and bonnet. One notable feature is the split A-pillars, designed to increase forward visibility. The forward cabin design is a simple one, with clean lines and a touchscreen mounted in the centre console. The Jazz uses a similar dual-motor hybrid system to the CR-V Hybrid but downsized for its supermini application. Honda says the powertrain “provides an exceptional blend of strong and effortless driving performance and impressive fuel economy.” The CR-V Hybrid pairs two electric motors with a 2.0-litre petrol engine and a CVT. However, given its smaller dimensions, the Jazz will use a 1.5-litre petrol engine and a pair of smaller electric motors. These will send a com-

bined 108bhp to the front wheels through a bespoke gearbox with a single fixed-gear ratio for a more linear acceleration curve. Honda claims a 062mph time of 9.4sec and a top speed of 108mph. It says the Jazz is capable of achieving 62.8mpg on the WLTP combined cycle while emitting 102g/km of CO2 in its standard form. Three driving modes are available, allowing drivers to choose between running on the engine, the motors or a combination of the two. Regenerative braking functionality features, sending a charge to the battery pack under deceleration. I say that because just a few months ago the MSM pushed their agenda of telling us Chelsea’s youngsters are real stars of the future! However the reality is that they’ll end up as journeymen within the football pyramid because there’s absolutely no way they have what it takes to become top level players. Whilst I do praise Lampard for giving their youngsters a chance and I also accept that inexperienced youngsters do breed inconsistency, it doesn’t hide the fact that the likes of Mason Mount, Tami Abraham and Ross Barkley are average at best. The latest example of my theory was Chelsea’s absolute inept Champions League performance on Tuesday against Bayern Munich. Going into the game everyone knew Chelsea faced a tough task hosting a Bayern side who won all six of their group-stage games, but I’m sure that Frank Lampard would have hoped they could replicate their weekend performance that saw them beat Tottenham 2-1, so he named an unchanged side for just the second time as blues boss. Meanwhile Bayern boss Hansi Flick made four changes from his sides 3-2 win over Paderborn last time out. Tolisso, Odriozola, Hernandez and Coutinho dropped to the bench with Boetang, Pavard, Muller and Coman starting in their places. From the off Bayern meant business and they could have been a goal up within the first minute as Jorginho was caught in possession in his own half and with Davies picking up the pieces the youngter then fed Muller on the edge of the box. However as already stated that period was brief because the German champions made it three in the 76th minute as impressive Bayern youngster Davies made a superb run down the left, beating a number of defenders as their weak attempts to stop him was really embarrassing, he then crossed a perfect ball to Lewandowski who had a simple tap-in at the back post. Bayern tried to get another before the final whistle as through their dominance alone they deserved it, however it wasn’t to be.

THE Coronavirus continues to create problems for Italian football. The Coronavirus has hit Italy hard in the last few days, especially in the northern parts. Seven deaths have been reported so far and more than 270 cases of infected people have been confirmed in the country. Last weekend, four Serie A matches were postponed and now it has been decided that this Thursday’s Europa League match between Inter and Ludogorets will be played in front of empty stands. ter of the country, has now announced to Football Italia that six matches in next weekend’s league round will be played without spectators as well. Among these matches is the game between Milan and Genoa, as well as the Juventus vs Inter battle. Parma is also forced to play without an audience. This decision, while wise to try to hinder the spread of this killer virus, will certainly lead to significant losses in revenue for the Italian football clubs that are affected. Football fans who planned on going to the matches are, of course, very disappointed as well.

Classic champion line-up for rally TWO-TIME World champion Massimo ‘Miki’ Biasion, will be the star of the upcoming Isla de Mallorca classic car rally. The Italian heads the list of more than 100 rally drivers lined up to take part in what will be the 16th edition of the event, and which this year will run from March 12 to 14. Miki will be at the wheel of a Lancia Delta Integrale, a vehicle in which he gained his world championship titles in 1988 and 1989. Other top level drivers signed up for the rally include Austrian champion and current Isla de Mallorca classic title holder Kris Rosenberger, and last time’s runner-up, British driver Seb Perez.
