CORONAVIRUS has officially arrived in Mallorca as a British father

tested positive for the disease. The patient is one of four members of a British family who were being kept in isolation at the Son Espases Hospital after the father learnt that he had been in contact with a person infected with the virus in France. As the second con-

firmed case in the country, the news has sparked mass panic from civilians, with a significant number of pharmacies across the island completely selling out of clinical face masks. The demand for the shields are now so high in the market that their stock prices have raised by almost 300 per cent.

However, the Ministry of Health has asked for calm in the population with Jordi Reina, the Head of Virology at Son Espases stating that “people don’t need to be worried, as it is a respiratory virus and this is a mild case.” Maria Antònia Font, the General Director of Public Health also confirmed

THE planned increase in taxi rates in Palma has been put on hold, angering drivers who have not seen f a re s change for over seven years. Last year, the Consell de Mallorca had agreed with unions to push the fares up by 2.43 per cent for the 2020 tourist season to reflect the increase in fuel and to meet new regulations enforced by Palma City Council. This included a new system that links the taxi fare for jour neys made from the airport to the city where passengers with an intermodal card will not be charged more than a €16 flat rate. Mallorca Talent THE final of the JoyRon Inter-School Talent Contest will be hosted at the magnificent Trui Theatre in Palma this evening (Thursday, February 13). Since October of last year, the Baleares International College, Green Valley School, La Salle, Lycee Francais and Rafa Nadal International School have been holding contest heats to identify the best talents to represent their school in the final. Commencing at 7.15pm, 18 acts will showcase their best performance skills to the audience and a panel of independent judges from the entertainment industry who will award prizes to the top three acts from two categories. The school who also gains the most points in the contest will be awarded the

JoyRon Inter-School Talent Contest Trophy for the 2019-2020 academic year. All funds raised from the event will be used to help children in need in the Balearic Islands through the JoyRon Foundation, an entity which serves to bring joy to youngsters in difficult circumstances. Established in 2015, the Foundation have been at the forefront of fundraising for children in need. A WOMAN who was caught setting fire to rubbish containers last summer has been handed an 18-month sentence. The court heard how she had used a lighter to set fire to four bins on Calle Jacint Verdaguer in Palma whilst under the influence of drugs causing a car and lamppost to be severely damaged.

THE Government of the Balearic Islands has asked for greater control in decisions that affect Palma’s Son Sant Joan Airport and stated a claim for co-management. Spokesperson Pilar Costa said the government strongly rejects any expansion of the airport, although the airports authority Aena has not stated any intention to do so.

Bay of protection THE Residents’ Associations of Palma and El Molinar have urged the City Council to declare the Bay of Palma a special protection zone (ZEP). President Miquel Obrador did formally request for the zone to be enforced in the last legislature, however it was only implemented from Le Seu Cathedral to Es Carnatge. This has sparked the Associations to present the proposal once again to the City Council due to the the matter being con-

sidered as one of ‘vital importance.’ Their request demands that improvements are made to ensure the safety and maintenance of the bay which is deemed ‘a unique nature reserve that is currently neglected.’ They also ask that there is better protection of traditional monuments along the promenade to preserve the bay’s maritime heritage and that palm trees are given special attention. Obrador stressed that the Asso-

ciations want their “residents to be proud of the marina and historical mills” and ask that City Council officials support their petition which will be officially presented at the next plenary session of the town hall later this month. The Associations also hope that the Bay of Palma will be given the same protection measures as spaces such as Ses Covetes and Es Trenc so that it can not only serve tourists, but residents who live on the island all year round.

TEACHERS at Ses Comes School in Porto Cristo have made a complaint to the Department of Education to denounce their ‘poor working conditions.’ At present, the school is undergoing major restoration works, which both teachers and parents claim have been unfinished and created a distracting and unsafe environment for students. In their complaint, teachers stress that management have ‘standardised issues that are not normal’ which is negatively impacting their work. This includes loud noise from labourers during school hours and a big hole which has been left in the outside grounds that poses great danger. For these reasons, they express they are ‘tired of the situation’ and ask that the Department of Education take a more central role in the improvement works scheduled to be completed on September 1.

THE City Council of Llucmajor have announced that from Saturday, February 15, there will be several changes to the Operation of Parking Regulation (ORA) system. With the aim of reducing the cost to residents and visitors when parking in the municipality, the City Council will stop charging in any ORA payment zones on Sundays. In addition, they will expand the ORA zones to allow vehicles to move freely in Llucmajor with the implementation of 102 new regulated parking spaces on the streets, specifically on Calle del Valle (48), Calle de Buenos Aires (15), Calle de Jaume I (15), Calle de la Estrella (2), Calle de la Fuente (13), Calle de la Feria (1) and Calle Esperanza (8). There will also be a reorganisation of restricted circulation zones (ACIRE) to improve traffic flows - a move praised by Mayor Éric Jareño.

THE Animal Rights Protection Commission has presented a series of proposals to the Government of the Balearic Islands to tighten up the legislation to protect animals. The lawyers demand that new measures are incorporated into the Law of Protection for Pets which is currently in a period of public debate. They urge that penalties ranging between €5,000 and €100,000 are enforced, the latter for the most serious cases of abuse. Pet owners would be fined for a range of actions deemed to be cruel, including keeping dogs chained up where a rule would be implemented to ensure that each canine has access to a fenced plot of land measuring at least 50 square metres, in addition to access to a properly insulated shelter. They also ask that the sale of animals through the internet is prohibited and that there is greater control of kennels and other centres where animals are housed.

Daredevil driver A YOUNG drug-fuelled driver has been arre s t e d b y t h e p o l i c e after his reckless driv i n g re s u l t e d i n h i s car landing in the sea. The 25-year-old daredevil had been speeding in Son Verí when he veered off the road and invaded a pedestrian walkway, narrowly missing walking residents before losing complete control of the car and driving straight into the water. Thankfully, a group of cyclists who witnessed the accident threw themselves into the waters, rescuing the driver who sparked mass panic as he was so disorientated that he couldn’t tell the group if anyone else was inside of the car. Approximately 320 people arrived at the train’s departure point in Palma last week, marking the start of its 2020 tourist season. The train had been out of action for just over three months, failing to meet its planned opening date due to problems on its power line which were

Although many tourist establishments still remain closed in Sóller, the train’s arrival point, it is reported that they will gradually reopen this month, coinciding with the restoration of the train service. In a statement made by

Oscar Mayol, the company’s president, the works which were carried out aimed to improve passenger safety and comfort. Restoration is still being made at its station in the Port of Sóller, but will not affect the service. Since its operation since 1912, the train with wooden carriages has been in continuous use, climbing 200 metres and passing through 13 tunnels on a journey of approximately 27km. Each of its original carriages, as well as all of its machinery, have a long history, where the renovation of the train’s components must be modified by hand.

THE City Council of Deià has unanimously approved the prohibition of putting down plastic or cloth flowers on graves in the emblematic Deià Cemetery. The cemetery is one of the most visited and photographed settings on the island, being the resting place of prestigious artists and intellectuals, including British Poet Robert Graves and the Mallorcan painter Antoni Gelabert. Situated next to the 14th century Sant Joan Baptista church, the cemetery also has mesmerising views over the surrounding landscapes. Under the new rules, mourners must “respect the local tradition that binds the graves to families” and unlike other graveyards, plots in the cemetery can only be “inherited by testamentary disposition or by disposition of the holder” where there will now be a

The regulations also insist that “the construction of new pantheons are prohibited and all graves must continue to maintain the traditional aesthetics." This is the first ordinance the cemetery has put in place in its history and has included aspects of local customs and ornamentation that are not normally stated in regulations in other municipalities.

THE Local Police of Palma have revealed that since January 10, 69 vehicles have been removed from public roads which were considered ‘dangerous’ or abandoned’ thanks to the launch of an ‘innovative initiative.’ The Director of Public Safety, Joana Maria Adrover, alongside the Head of the Local Police, José Luis Carque, explained at a press conference that they have been “working on improving the management of abandoned vehicles in the city” and to ensure that those who dump their cars were made accountable for their actions. Carque states that the

REMOVAL: A total of 69 vehicles have been removed since January 10. City Council and police have found a quick solution for the removal of vehicles which are considered as ‘hazardous urban waste’ due to many being left in poor condition on public

roads in districts such as Es Rafal, Can Valero and Son Oms. Adrover explained that once an abandoned vehicle has been found, a police officer will be deployed

to the scene and will assess whether it falls under ‘hazardous urban waste.’ After one week, the vehicle will be destroyed and the City Council will process a penalty to the legal owner to cover the costs of the removal in addition to the fines that the vehicle may have accumulated since being left on the road. The current penalty is €2,400 for abandoned lorries, €1,400 for cars and vans, and €700 for motorcycles and mopeds, however Adrover warns that these rates will be increased this year.

Head-on collision A DRIVER who was under the influence of alcohol smashed head-on into a house in Andratx, causing considerable damage to its façade. The driver, for reasons that are unknown and which are currently being investigated by the police, lost complete control of their vehicle, crashing into a property on Camí del Pla de Son Llarg on Sunday, February 9. Shocked residents had alerted the emergency services upon witnessing the accident with officers from Andratx Local Police and a SAMU-061 ambulance arriving a short time later. The two occupants of the car had informed medical personnel that they were unharmed with the intention of leaving the scene, however, after an assessment, paramedics determined that they were both injured. Thankfully, no other individuals or vehicles were involved in the incident. Suspicious that the driver was intoxicated, a breathalyser test was performed which indicated that the individual was over the legal limit for alcohol. The Traffic Unit of the Guardia Civil have now taken over the investigation with the driver charged with reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol. The house which was struck will now be assessed by an insurance provider and the costs to repair the property will likely be ordered to be paid by the responsible party, depending on the outcome of the police investigation.

THE National Police have confirmed the discovery of a man’s lifeless body in the car park of Son Espases Hospital. As reported by the police, the corpse of a 45-year-old man was discovered in the early hours of February 7. SOLIDARITY: Andratx celebrated the fourth edition of its March Against Cancer.

United we walk ANDRATX celebrated the fourth edition of its solidarity ‘March Against Cancer’ on Sunday, February 9. The event attracted some 500 people who participated in a fun-filled day of sport under the sunny skies. Launched by Andratx City Council in collaboration with the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) and the Association of Parents of Children with Cancer in the Balearic Islands (ASPANOB), the inspiring initiative aimed to show unity and optimism in the fight against the all-encompassing disease. Participants enjoyed a walk of approximately six kilometres through the main streets of the town and its surrounding countryside in a show of solidarity with cancer patients and their families. Approximately one hour before starting the trek, visitors congregated on Plaza de España to hear the sound of the El Puntazo batucada group, who dazzled crowds with a musical performance influenced by African and Brazilian sounds. After the walk a raffle of different gifts donated by local shops took place to raise much needed funds for cancer charities. The day was deemed a huge success, with Andratx City Council thanking everyone who took part.

PALMA City Council in Spain’s Mallorca have announced that all bars and restaurants which have terrace enclosures will be ordered to remove them from March 3, 2020. In the last two years discussions have been made public about the new move which orders businesses to replace their existing awnings with ones that occupy less space on public passages. Speaking to the press on February 6, City Council spokesperson Alberto Jarabo explained that 127 of the city’s establishments will be affected by the measure and that there would be no further delays in its enforcement. Jarabo stressed that the only option for granting an extension would be to change the municipal by-law gov-

A RECENT survey by Mintel the world’s leading market intelligence agency has revealed an interesting fact which shows that Britain’s young people are either very poor or anxious to help the environ­ ment. Younger people (16 to 24­year­ olds) are ‘Swishers’ as some 75 per cent say that they are quite happy to regularly swap clothes with friends in order to have an inexpen­ sive way of varying their wardrobes. Also known as Generation Z, this age group are also happy to rent clothes for special occasions rather than purchase them with 54 per

cent saying that they have or would be interested in renting. The survey found that the majori­ ty feel that buying too many fash­ ion items is bad for the environ­ ment and they would prefer to purchase from a retailer that sold sustainable fashion ranges, but had difficulty in knowing which sellers are acting ethically. One of the largest producers of wind turbines is Siemens Gamesa with its headquarters in Spain and they are tackling two pro­ jects, firstly to make the blades even larger and secondly to en­ sure that they are produced from carbon fibre and then try to find an efficient and easily recyclable alternative.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I REALLY do wish people would stop asking me why, as a resident of Spain, I should be writing and giving my opinions on events and situations that arise in the UK? Well, the simple answer to that is, it’s what I do. I am still a very patriotic and staunch supporter of my birth country and, although I don’t actually reside there, I do visit on a fairly regular basis. Because of my profession, I also often find myself travelling there quite extensively. Another more important advantage of being on the outside, looking in as it were, is that you can get a far broader and often more unbiased perspective of a situation - one that can often elude those who live in the confines of the same environment day in and day out. This brings me neatly into this week’s gripe. Yet another atrocity committed by a ‘home grown’ terrorist has brought mayhem to a

peaceful British shopping centre. Yet another prisoner on early release has been allowed to walk freely among innocent citizens and maim and injure before being shot dead. No doubt there was plenty of high fiving and ‘Al-

Even the peace loving Christians went to the lions rather than surrender their religion. What the authorities need to do is get tough. First of all they must relieve these monsters of all their human rights. The introduction of a mandatory full 10-year sentence for any terrorist related offence, including the accessing or passing of terrorist propa-

All these things contribute to our global footprint - that is the impact we as individuals, through our lifestyle, have on the planet. But should we be made to feel guilty that living our lives is killing the planet and leading to the extinction of the human race? According to Dr Guy Midgley, head of the climate change research group of the National Biodiversity Institute South Africa, we live on an unusually stable planet, but periods of cooling and warming naturally happen in cycles. These periods of rising and falling temperatures over the last 500,000 years have been down to levels of methane and CO2 in the atmosphere which are not man-made. Also, levels of solar radiation vary over time and this has a significant impact on global temperatures, most notably in the Earth’s northern hemisphere. Climate change experts believe we are currently between ice ages and that the development of modern industry has had a relatively minor impact on temperatures. Over several thousand years in the earth’s history, temperatures have been higher than they currently are indicating that doing too many school runs or turning on the air con isn’t what’s going to wipe us out. So, it’s not just our fault, but does that mean we should throw caution to the wind? Not at all. Reducing greenhouse gases will slow down global warming and, while we’re the planet’s dominant species, we should do all we can to save the planet. After all, we’re only passing through.

PLANE SAILING DEAR Euro Weekly, With the majority of your readers taking flights backwards and forwards between their home country and Spain it has freaked me out a bit with all the recent news regarding aircraft. Helicopter crashes, malfunctioning landing gear, diverted flights, planes that can’t handle the weather... is it now just a case of say your prayers and hope for the best if we want an easy way to travel? Surely there are enough people working in the aeronautics industry now we can fly more safely. Plane engineers making sure they are suitable to fly. Designers discovering ways to build making fail-safe planes. Weren’t we all supposed to have our own rockets or jet boots by this point? All joking aside, getting on a Ryanair flight is bad enough as it is, before worrying if the flight is going to crash. Maybe they could upgrade their cabins to give some comfort should you be on the last flight you ever take or will they just go the whole hog and replace your one bag allowance with space for a parachute?

Work woes HI Leapy, About right, I have worked in many countries in Europe, Asia and Africa, but have only been discriminated against in Europe. I still have a letter from a major car manufacturer saying that I cannot be considered until their own citizens have all been employed. Basically their labour exchanges etc say the same thing. Have I missed something? MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I USE a couple of online forums to ask about things that I’m not sure of. I’m careful what I put on there. I try to be concise and to the point and, of course, look forward to any answers that may be given or comments on the posts. But what really gets on my nerves is the people that hijack the conversation by taking over my thread and sending it in a completely different direction. It happens all the time. There has to be forum etiquette and it’s simple. If I ask about the correct air pressure to put in my tyres for a long journey to Portugal with a car full of people I have no desire to read about how your Aunt Fanny got her suitcase nicked at Faro airport OK? The annoying thing is that sometimes by the time I get back to read the answers to my question it’s now gone off in loads of different directions. I will, of course, just try and take it back with the one word reply to that person which is HIJACKER!

OK I may be taking a chance with this next grump but it has to be said. As I’ve mentioned before I was in the video business for over 20 years and in that time I watched thousands of movies as a buyer. Not once did I ever consider the race, religion or sexual persuasion of any actor, director, or come to that anything except was it a good movie. There is a lot of carrying on at the moment with the Baftas, Oscars and whatever other award is being given out, that there should be more women, people of colour and gay, plus any others I’ve missed nominated. My question is could it actually be a case that the movies, directors or stars that are being nominated are actually producing the best work? I’ve listened and read all the stuff people like Joaquin Phoenix has said and I’d hate it to go the other way and movies and the stars and directors were nominated because of all of the above reasons of colour, gender etc. I don’t see Joaquin refusing any awards by the way or saying you know I think I’ll give this to so and so because their performance was far superior to mine. Oh and what’s with Joaquin curtseying when introduced to the Royals? Have I missed another equality thing?

An Italian Touch SOME years ago I was working with a company whose offices were round the corner from the famous Italian restaurant Locanda Locatelli, owned by the charismatic Giorgio Locatelli. I was taken for lunch there quite a few times and Giorgio would often come out of the kitchen and have a chat with us. It was Giorgio who would do wonderful things with seasonal vegetables (and truffles if you had the funds!). He told me that a carbonara should never have cream, only beaten eggs. This is a deli-

cate and creamy dish that shows off the wonderful flavour of fennel. Put a 500g pack of spaghetti into boiling salted water (enough for four people). You now have 10 minutes… Soften a whole large fennel cut into strips in some olive oil for five minutes. Do not let it colour, just soften. Add two crushed garlic cloves. Then add some chard leaves that have been chopped into thin strips (you could use spinach). Let it wilt then add salt and pepper. Beat four eggs in a bowl and grate in a good handful of parmesan. Mix well. When the spaghetti is

ready, add to the pan with a tablespoon of the pasta cooking water. Mix together and leave for 30 seconds. Then mix in the egg and

For others who have the time and means, a next best choice would be to follow the race one way or another. For vintage car enthusiasts this is the race and the place to be in May. The food, the petrol, the views and the historic sights as well as the sounds of many sports cars pushing on. The 38th edition of the historical re-enactment of the race held from 1927 to 1957 will start from the city of Brescia on May 13, 2020 returning to Brescia on May 16. On the starting line of the most important vintage car race regularly held there is an expected 400 cars starting this year. The cars will be selected from among those registered on the site www.registro1000miglia.it. By the end of 2019 there were more than 600 cars registered, more have no doubt since registered for the this year’s race. From among the registered cars just 400 will be selected for the 2020 race after strict examination of the entrants.

There are two types of registration. The first is ‘Participant Car 1000 Miglia 1927/ 1957’ which is reserved for the individual cars, identified by number plate or chassis which were originally registered for at least one edition of the 1000 Miglia from 1927 to 1957. The second type of entrant is ‘Eligible Car 1000 Miglia,’ which certifies eligibility for the modern commemoration of the Race belonging to a model type registered for at least one edition of the 1000 Miglia from 1927 to 1957. Enzo Ferrari called the 1000 Miglia ‘A travelling museum unique in the world’

and since 1927, the year of the first edition, the race has maintained its unique attractions, not only a car race but also a mix of history and a journey through the beauty of Italian cities, villages and countryside. The route; the start line is in Brescia with the long procession of vintage cars crossing the picturesque towns of Lake Garda, Desenzano and Sirmione continuing on through Villafranca di Verona, Mantua, Ferrara ad Ravenna finishing at Cervia - Milan Marittima. The second day will see the race start from Cesenatico and swing through

Urbino, Fabriano, Macerata , Fermo and Ascoli Piceno and Amatrice. From Rieti the vintage cars will arrive in Rome where after the usual parade through the streets of the Eternal City, Day Two will end on the via Veneto. The third and longest days racing on Friday May 15 will start in the early morning and will see the cars transit Ronciglione, Radicofani, Viterbo and Castiglione d’Orica, pausing at the magnificent Piazza II Campo di Siena. Leaving Lucca the cars will leave Tuscany crossing the Cisa Pass to the day’s finish in Parma, the 2020 Italian Capital of Culture. The fourth and final day of the race will see the route pass from Salsomaggiore Terme from the village of Castell’Arquato [Piacenza] and from Cernusco sul Naviglio a town in the province of Milan, named as the European City of Sport 2020 , then on to Bergamo before finally arriving at the finish on the Viale Venezia in Brescia. The race is no longer as dangerous as the original however that does not detract from its many attractions. Make a date one way or another to follow the car of your day dreams. VOLKSWAGEN has unveiled the Taigun, a small SUV designed specifically for the Indian market and due to go into production in 2021, at the New Delhi Auto Expo. The production version of the Taigun will be the first Volkswagen launched under the VW Group’s ‘India 2.0’ project. The new model, similar in size to the European-market T-Cross, is closely related to the Skoda Vision IN concept that has also been unveiled at the event. Both vehicles are built on a new local market version of Volkswagen’s MQB A0 modular platform and will be built alongside each other. The Taigun is marginally longer than the T-Cross, with a wheelbase of 2,651mm. It also offers an increased 205mm of ground clearance, in order to better cope with India’s rougher roads. The exterior design is bespoke to the Taigun, with a more upright design than the T-Cross and greater use of chrome to reflect local tastes.

Inside, the concept features a digital instrument cluster and an 8.0-inch central touchscreen. According to Autocar India, the Taigun will be powered by a 130hp, 1.5litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, with a CNG-powered version also being considered. The Taigun and Vision IN will both gain ‘notchback’ variants - similar to the Brazilian VW Ventos - in the future. While the initial focus for both machines will be India, the VW Group could export them to similar markets including Brazil and South America - in the future.

Muscular luxury THE 2021 MercedesBenz AMG GLE 63 S is a sensible five-passenger SUV with added touches from the highperformance division of the German global automobile marque. With just over 600 horsepower on tap, the AMG GLE 63 S may look similar to the standard GLS, but there are many noticeable exterior changes, not to mention what’s under the hood. Mercedes-AMG, as always, has done an excellent job of engineering a family SUV that can, if so

desired, handle some hot laps around the track. Like all other MercedesAMG models, the new GLE 63 S features several exterior modifications to set it apart from its non-AMG counterpart. An AMG-specific radiator grille with vertical louvres, front bumper with a dynamic A-wing design, a power dome hood, and a front splitter in silver. Also, notice the flared wheel arches for a truly muscular appearance. The rear bumper incorporates the diffuser and a unique AMG exhaust system with two rectangular twin tailpipe trims. Power comes from a 4.0litre twin-turbo V8 with 603 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. An electric 48-volt EQ Boost starter-generator contributes another 21 hp and 184 lb-ft, which means, for the first time, this particular engine has been electrified. All of that power is directed to the 4Matic

all-wheel-drive system through a nine-speed automatic transmission. Expect 0 to 60 mph to happen in just 3.7 seconds while top speed is electronically limited to 174 mph. Due to the sheer amount of power, Mercedes-AMG engineers have included systems such as AMG Active Ride Control for roll stabilisation, an electronically controlled locking differential at the rear, and an advanced braking system. Up front are six-piston fixed brake callipers and 16-inch brake discs, while single-piston floating brake callipers with 14.6-inch discs are at the rear. A high-performance ceramic braking system is optional. Mercedes-AMG has not released official pricing, though it will be announced closer to when the 2021 GLE 63 S arrives in dealerships in the middle of the year.
