THE National Police have arrested a man for a string of offences against his wife, step-son and public health. As reported by sources close to the investigation, a 40-yearold man of Colombian nationality, was remanded in custody on Monday, February 3 after the 112 emergency services hotline received multiple calls from residents in the early hours of the morning. They had detailed that a heated argument was taking place at a property on Calle Tetuan in Andratx, fearing for the safety of the occupants inside.

Officers from the Guardia Civil and Local Police arrived to the scene a short time later, finding a woman and her son in a state of distress. According to the mother, she had been attacked by her husband after they returned from a local bar in the area. It is alleged that when they arrived home, the couple got into a disagreement which turned extremely violent. The acts of aggression had woken up the son who stepped in to defend his mother, which was met by the man taking an axe and machete from the garage, where he then at-

Unwavering support WORLD CANCER DAY was marked on Tuesday, February 4 in a global uniting initiative to raise awareness on one of the greatest health challenges in history. To honour all the inspiring efforts made on the island which give visibility and support those affected by the disease, we at Euro Weekly News wanted to highlight the work of Calanova Cancer Care, who last year raised a total of €69,500 for cancer charities in Mallorca. Just before Christmas, a cheque for €3,000

was presented by Calanova Cancer Care’s President Angela McGrath to Krista Hyer, the President of the Cancer Support Group, an organisation which provides roundthe-clock support and care to those diagnosed with the disease. A cheque for €3,000 was also presented to Jackie Codd, the President of Age Concern, a non-for-profit organisation which assists in the needs and interests of older people. The Calanova Cancer Care shop also partici-

pated in inspiring international projects. At the end of last year, the shop was honoured with a plaque from the Association for Parents of Children with Cancer in the Balearic Islands (ASPANOB), presented by Jaime Coll, the President and Founder. Calanova Cancer Care praised the volunteers who have given up their time to help the charity. From February, all men’s and women’s clothes will be on sale with a 50 per cent discount.

IN view of Brexit having finally come into action, last Friday January 31, BBC News Europe reporter Gavin Lee spoke to Euro Weekly News’ very own Michel Euesden. This is most likely due to people not knowing what the future would hold. This documentary will be all about ‘Life as an Expat after Brexit.’ They will be following up to see what changes have been made or felt one, six and 12 months after the initial Brexit date of January 31, 2020. Only time will tell what Brexit truly holds for the British, but as Michel said, Boris stated that this would be “The best for Britain.” Only she would have rather he had said that this change will be “The best for the British people.”

Road safety THE City Council of Andratx have unanimously agreed work must be carried out by the Consell de Mallorca to improve safety on the S’Arracó to Sant Elm road. Councillors ask that maintenance is completed by 2023 and to focus on road surfaces, potholes and safe places for drivers to stop.

Loyal service RESIDENTS in Mallorca were outraged after learning that three dogs who were specially trained to assist the Local Police had been put up for adoption due to cuts in the force. Palma City Council subsequently stepped in and have ordered two of the canines, a Belgian and German shepherd, to be used as aids in the Mountain Rescue Unit. The third dog, which is a Labrador, will be returned to his former owner who had donated their pet to

the Canine Unit (UCAN) of Palma Police several years ago. Councillors had noted the interest from the public on social media after cutbacks were made to a unit of the Local Police which prevented officers being able to exclusively care for the animals. Residents were alarmed that the dogs would no longer serve the community despite the fact that they were specialised in tracing narcotics in security controls. Animal activist Guillermo Amen-

gual was particularly enraged, holding a protest outside of the town hall where he called the City Council and Local Police ‘heartless.’ Holding a banner reading ‘Love us always and do not abandon us,’ Amengual urged the mayor to act. An examination of the animals was then ordered, where it was determined that they all were healthy and that two would be able to continue serving the emergency services.

Brutal attack

THE police identified 31 underage drinkers during raids in various districts in the capital over the weekend, two of which had escaped from government shelters. Officers launched their operation in a bid to crackdown on bars and leisure areas that had a high proportion of minors consuming alcohol after numerous complaints were filed from residents about underage drinking and drug abuse in Palma. Separate raids were carried out in Son Gotleu, Camp Redó, Passeig Marítim, Polígon de Son Castelló and Avenida Joan Miró where 27 were charged with alleged drug abuse and two for carrying dangerous weapons. Their parents were subsequently notified about the pressing matter. Bar owners who had the youngsters on their premises were also punished, for violating legislation as they sold alcoholic beverages to minors under age 18.

THE Local Police have arrested a man for gender violence after he brutally beat a woman in broad daylight. As reported by sources close to the investigation, a 27year-old man struck his partner multiple times in the middle of Calle Balmes in Palma on the afternoon of Saturday, February 1. The woman was hit so violently that she fell unconscious onto the ground and had to be transferred by an ambulance to hospital. It is understood that medical personnel expect that the woman will make a full recovery after an examination determined her injuries were not of a serious nature. The couple were reportedly under the influence of alcohol at the time and had a heated argument before the the man launched his attack. As a result of the incident, the man was arrested and remanded in custody before appearing in court.

Fatal fire AN elderly man has died after a fire broke out at a property in Palma. The incident took place in the early hours of Sunday, February 2 at an apartment block on Pasaje Cala de San Vicente. As reported by the 112 emergency services, the Fire Brigade and a SAMU 061 ambulance were deployed to a third floor flat which was completely engulfed in flames. Firefighters had pulled three victims to safety, one of which was an 89-year-old man in serious condition. He was transferred to Son Espases Hospital and placed in ICU after suffering 40 per cent burns, however, died a short time later. Two other family members were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and an investigation has now been launched by the National Police to determine the exact cause of the blaze.

in Palma. The 54-year-old man died in August of last year after falling seven metres from scaffolding. Investigators had determined that there was an attempt to cover up his death as the scene of the fatal incident was tampered with. This interference included disassembling the scaffolding and cleaning up the man’s blood. They also indicated that there was serious negligence and that his coworkers had failed to assist a person in danger. Forensic evidence collected at the time pointed to the scaffolding not having the necessary safety requirements, where its deficiencies resulted in two workers plummeting to the ground - the deceased man who died some hours later at Son Espases hospital, and another who suffered a heavy blow to his head. The five people arrested include two heads of the company who had previously been awarded a contract for improving the swimming pool, both being charged with reckless homicide. Two of the victim’s colleagues who are illegally residing in Spain have been charged with nonassistance to a person in danger. A fifth person has been charged with falsifying health and safety documentation.

‘No Deal’ Elephant is back by John Smith IN a speech which was widely leaked before he gave it, Boris Johnson made it clear to the European Union that if necessary, he is prepared to walk away from the negotiating table without a deal if he doesn’t get his way. The actual talks don’t start until March, but the Prime Minister is preparing Britain and the EU for a potentially tough battle over the matter of European Union restrictions on Britain in the future. It has been made clear by the THE former European Union President, Donald Tusk has irritated the British government just days after Brexit by saying that an independent Scotland would receive an “enthusiastic” reception if it wanted to rejoin the EU. Whilst accepting that Scotland could not automatically be accepted into the Union, he told Andrew Marr of the BBC that he believed that there might be a case

Whilst not specifically saying that his target is a ‘no deal’ exit at the end of 2020, Mr Johnson is clear that he wants an agreement based either on the Canadian model which does allow free trade but without EU imposed restrictions or the Australian model which is based more on World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules without allowing complete free trade. Some experts suggest that the WTO option could be as damaging to Britain’s economy as a ‘no deal’ option although at the moment the Prime Minister says that Britain will prosper regardless.

Mass hysteria PANIC is rife on the island as several pharmacies have reported that they have completely sold out of clinical face masks since the outbreak of the deadly coronavirus. The swift spread of the disease has resulted in a shortage of masks, since there is hope that the respiratory shield can prevent transmission of the flu-like infection. In Palma, pharmacists have expressed their bewilderment on the hysteria, claiming that a significant number of people

Head of the Virology Unit of the Son Espases Hospital, detailed how their use can prevent up to 80 per cent of the infection since it is typically transmitted by the respiratory route. However, he stated that masks don’t offer full protection against airborne viruses and small particles can still pass through the material in addition to the masks leaving users’ eyes exposed. He therefore urges the public to frequently wash their hands and to avoid contact with their eyes, nose and mouth.

IT has been over two weeks since David Cabrera disappeared during Storm Gloria whilst he was out canyoning. The much loved 34year-old sadly went missing on January 20 after he had been lowered with a rope by his two friends into the Torrent de Na Mora and a powerful force of water pushed David underwater. Since his disappearance, the Special Group of Underwater Activities (GEAS) of the Guardia Civil, who are leading the search and

rescue operation, have shown their capacity and perseverance to find David, where there has not been one day without the team looking for him. The operation was extended further afield last week, with members scouring the sea that surrounds the Serra de Tramuntana, continuing on to the shores of Ciutadella de Menorca. David’s family continue to be supported by the police force and governors from the Consell de Mallorca at this particularly difficult time.

Speaking to the press, Gómez, stated that “the new definition of cancer is that it is a chronic curable medical condition” stressing the combined goal of all administrations to cure 70 per cent of cases by 2030. Navarro also reaffirmed

the support of the City Council in measures of support to cancer prevention and treatment, highlighting the ‘professionalism’ of the AECC against the disease. World Cancer Day is a global uniting initiative led by the Union for International Cancer Control that aims to give worldwide awareness to cancer.

What to do in the event of an emergency in Spain Living in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics.

IN Spain there are two groups which most people would understand as being ‘the police.’ The National Police (Policía Nacional) who have jurisdiction in the towns and cities and the Guardia Civil outside the towns and cities. The Local Police are employed by town halls; they basically deal with property found, and enforce local laws. Whilst they have a power of arrest, when exercised they must take the arrested person to the National Police or Guardia Civil according to where the c r i m e t o o k place. National Police and the Guardia Civil deal with all crimes, missing persons etc in their jurisdiction. The National Police also deal with all applications for immigration paperwork, NIEs, EU Citizens Registration and for non EU nationals, Residencia, etc. Throughout Europe the general number for all emergencies is 112. In Spain the operators speak English, French, German and Italian, in addition to Spanish and will liaise with the emergency services when the caller does not speak Spanish. No area code is needed and the number can be called from any phone, including

mobiles even those without a Spanish SIM card or any credit. You can also fax or SMS 112. The 24 hours national emergency numbers for Spanish speakers are: 091 - police, 061 - health emergencies 080 - firefighters. By calling 902 102 112, one can give details of certain crimes, including:burglaries, car theft, theft or loss of documents or belongings. The service is available in English 9am to 9pm seven days a week, and 9am to 3pm in French, German and Italian. Having given details, you must go to the National Police station which you nominate, within 48 hours to make the report using the information supplied on the telephone. In the case of robbery, where threat or force has been used, victims should call 112 for police attendance, or go to the police station to make a report. Other useful number are - 016, to report instances of gender violence. For problems at sea, the Maritime Rescue Service (Salvamento Seguridad Maritmo) can be contacted on 900 202 202, and the Red Cross (Cruz Rojo) on 902 222 292. There is also a Red Cross 24-hour helpline 900 100 333.

Two week review Commentary by Moneycorp THE EU Withdrawal Bill passing through parliament didn’t cause much movement in sterling because it had been expected. There was more response to the Prime Minister’s optimism over reaching a deal with the EU by the end of the year as investors move their attention to the next Brexit milestone. Economic data gave the pound some assistance towards the end of the month with house prices and employment showing increases and the CBI Industrial Trends Survey showing the biggest swing towards optimism since 1958. A fall in retail sales put a dampener on the market’s enthusiasm but the following week, the composite PMI came in at 52.4, which Markit described as “a decisive change of direction.” The pound jumped ahead of the Bank of England’s (BoE) announcement that the Monetary Policy Committee voted to keep rates on hold and made further, smaller gains after the news was announced. Across Europe, inflation increased to

1.3% as forecast. The euro was marked down by a perceived dovish tone to ECB President Christine Lagarde’s European Central Bank statement accompanying the decision to keep interest rates on hold. GDP figures in Europe showed a surprise contraction by 0.1% quarter-on-quarter of French GDP in the fourth quarter but there was better news in Spain, which showed GDP was up 0.5% quarter-on-quarter for Q4 and increases were also seen in Belgium and Austria. In the US, NAB’s monthly business survey provided ‘further evidence that activity stabilised in Q4.’ Durable goods orders increased by a monthly 2.4%, but mainstream investment was down by

In Canada, headline inflation was unchanged at 2.2% in December and the Bank of Canada left its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 1.75% for a 16th month. Neither was a surprise, but investors were concerned about the dovish tone of Governor Stephen Poloz’s statement that there is still ‘a high degree of uncertainty’ about the economy. It’s been a tough time for the Australian dollar, despite figures showing almost 29k new jobs were created in December and unemployment touching a nine-month low of 5.1%. Investors believe that the news may be enough to prevent the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) cutting rates. Of more concern was the impact of the Coronavirus on tourism, which caused the Aussie to lose ground. Consumer prices rose 0.7% in the fourth quarter, taking headline inflation for calendar 2019 to 1.8%. The quarterly announcement of New Zealand’s headline inflation came in at 1.9%, beating forecast and putting a temporary halt on losses to the Kiwi. The Business NZ’s performance of services index was lower on the month but still positive at 51.9.

Flying high MALLORCAN resident Àngel Rosselló has been crowned alongside his four hybrid birds at the renowned Wo r l d Ornithology Championship. Hosted in Matosinhos, Portugal, Rosselló’s birds, which are a mixture of Bruno Goldfinch and canary, were awarded maximum points in the H21 Hybrids category. Expressing his pride to be recognised internationally, Rosselló who is a carpenter by profession, explained that the hybrid category is the most difficult due to all that is involved in raising the species. He also detailed how time consuming his hobby is, where he rises at 6.30am every morning to inspect the cages kept in his outer courtyard, but that he couldn’t imagine a life without them. Diesel sales dropping

AT one time, the Spanish govern­ ment was in favour of the use of diesel fuel and taxes were (and still are at the moment) lower than that of leaded petrol which encouraged the sale of diesel vehi­ cles. Now however, as worldwide opinion is that diesel is more pol­ luting than lead free fuel, sales of diesel fuel in Spain have dropped by 0.4 per cent in 2019 for the first time in five years according to the Corporation for Strategic Reserves of Petroleum Products (Cores).

Spanish economy is ok THERE is some good news and bad news for the Spanish economy following a report published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) which shows that it grew by 2 per cent in 2019. The bad news is that government forecasts called for a 2.1 per cent increase but the good news is that the Bank of Spain and the Interna­ tional Monetary Fund got it spot on and the European Commission ex­ pected it to be as low as 1.9 per cent. It believes that losses to the end of 2019 will be between £1 (€1.15) million and £2 (€2.3) mil­ lion which compares favourably against 2018 losses of £9.3 (€10.7) million.

confirmed that he intends to make no payment. He believes that there is an outstanding sum of €194.72 million to be ac­ counted for which negates any need to pay the RPA.

STAYING up-to-date with the latest currency news can help you time your transfers effectively, so find out what you should be looking out for over the next couple of weeks… Latest currency news The GBP/EUR exchange rate soared to a three­year high last De­ cember as UK PM Boris Johnson se­ cured a comfortable majority in the UK General Election. However, the pound didn’t have a great end to the year, with GBP/EUR hitting lows of €1.14 be­ fore stabilising around €1.17. EUR/GBP, meanwhile, fluctuated between €0.84 and €0.87 while GBP/USD drifted to $1.30.

CURRENCY NEWS: The pound didn’t have a great end to the year. What’s been happening? Sterling’s fall from grace came swiftly after the Conservative’s election victory, as Boris Johnson amended his EU withdrawal bill to legally block any extension to the Brexit transition period past De­ cember 2020. This effectively leaves Johnson with just 11 months in which to ne­ gotiate a new trade deal with the

EU or leave the UK to face a no­deal Brexit at the end of the year. This sparked significant concern amongst GBP investors who had hoped the passing of Johnson’s withdrawal bill would help to bring more clarity to Brexit. While the spectre of Brexit con­ tinues to hang over Sterling, the currency has also been feeling the heat thanks to the rising odds of

the BoE cutting interest rates in the near future. Several BoE policymakers have hinted in recent weeks about a pos­ sible rate, including Governor Mark Carney who said the bank would re­ spond ‘promptly’ if economic weak­ ness persisted. This speculation has been fuelled by a run of underwhelming UK da­ ta, including a surprise contraction of growth in November and the lowest inflation reading in over three­years. The euro, meanwhile has been fluctuating in response to mixed domestic data, with manufacturing remaining in contraction territory but inflation edging towards the Eu­ ropean Central Bank’s (ECB) target. What do you need to look out for? Looking ahead, Brexit develop­ ments and Bank of England (BoE) interest rate speculation are likely to remain the main catalysts of movement in the pound over the

next four weeks. The UK is all set to leave the EU on January 31 and this will no doubt thrust Brexit back into the spotlight and limit upside in GBP exchange rates. German data will remain one of the biggest causes of euro move­ ment in the weeks ahead. If fears for the country’s growth outlook grow, the common currency could be pressured lower. As it stands, the outlook for the GBP/EUR exchange rate is neutral­ negative at the start of 2020. LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT ONE extremely enlightening, and somewhat disquieting fact to emerge from this Coronavirus outbreak, is how incredibly easy it was for the Chinese authorities to shut down 10 cities. This actually involved some 33 million inhabitants. That is almost half of the whole United Kingdom - and the communist hierarchy managed to lock them all down almost overnight. Can you imagine trying to close down half the UK at that speed? It would take a fortnight’s debate in parliament before you could even begin. The Chinese then proceeded to build two new hospitals in a week. The UK could take up to 10 years to even get planning permission! Mind you, that of course is how a dictatorship works; heaven forbid the democratic countries of the world being taken over by despots of this nature. And frankly, that’s

Dogs, cats, monkeys, live mice, living fish, rats, fried excretion and human fetuses - to name but a few. Some of the stuff they serve up in their restaurants makes the ‘I’m A Celebrity’ trials look like a Jamie Oliver gourmet night! Is it any wonder this virus has jumped from animals to humans? If they continue gorging on this type of menu, I should think there are plenty, even more deadly diseases just waiting to cross over. It wouldn’t surprise me if AIDS didn’t originate from somewhere in this inscrutable Far

Eastern direction either. No, I think we should be very wary of the Chinese. Have you ever had an argument with a waiter in a Chinese restaurant? It doesn’t take much for the whole staff to join in and the chef to appear with a meat cleaver. Don’t take my word for it. This is a quote from prophesies of old Mother Shipton in the 15th century. ‘And Christian one fights Christian two. And nations sigh, yet nothing do. And yellow men great power gain, from mighty bear (Russia?) with whom they’ve lain.’ Unquote. I also think the numbers of fatalities that have resulted from this virus are far higher than they are actually divulging. 40th Anniversary of Danish church CONSULAR MATTERS vI AM always proud to manage the huge community of expat Danish people in Andalucia and Extremadura. The Danish colony on the Costa del Sol is of approximately 30,000 people who come from a country with a population of 5.5. million. As Consul and lawyer, I am used to attending many cultural, institutional and social events; but for this particular one, I was very proud to attend, together with the Ambassador for Denmark in Spain Mr Jens Kisling, last Saturday January 26, the 40th anniversary of the Danish Church of Málaga West Coast. The Danske Kirke øst for Málaga has been on the Costa Del Sol since the year 1980, and is, obviously, an important part of

As Danish Consul, I am keen to support all the needs of the expat group, including their religious ones, of course. The Consulate has regular activities such as issuing passports, helping Danish businesses in Spain and net-

working relations with Spanish and Danish businesses; however religion is an important part in the lives of a great number of people, so we are more than happy to support them as much as possible. As part of the events organ-

ised by the Danish Church (Den Danske Kirke øst for Málaga) to celebrate its 40th anniversary, the Ambassador and I were invited to attend a mass followed by a dinner at the fabulous Cuevas de Nerja restaurant. We had a chance to meet and talk with more than 100 attendees who told us about their experiences, concerns and general life in Spain. As part of the celebrations, we were also treated to a flamenco dancing exhibition which the Ambassador and I greatly enjoyed. The Danish Church mass is currently being officiated at the Catholic Church, who has allowed their place of worship to be used by the Danish priest and expats to celebrate their service and also have the use of their facilities. This is a very true indicator of the close relationship that exists between the Danish expats and Spanish society in general.

The Danske Kirke ost for Málaga is not only a place of religious worships, but also strives to promote social, cultural and charitable activities such as organising cinema film forums (Danish and Spanish films). At some point in the past the Church decided to separate their religious activities from the social ones, and a few years ago created the Danish Club of Torre Del Mar (Velez-Málaga). They also host musical events and organise visits to other cities in Andalucia. In addition, they hold a traditional Danish Christmas market, a real home from home experience in Spain. So, in my capacity as Danish Consul, I want to congratulate the Danish Church in its 40th anniversary, I hope they continue their service to the local community and support the close relationship with the Spanish community on the Costa Del Sol.

BRAVE CHOICE WHY on earth do some people get so worked up about migrants, don’t they realise they are migrants themselves? I was unfortunately witness to a group of lads verbally abusing some ‘Lookie Lookie’ men, it was pretty shameful. It made me embarrassed to be British. Those people rescued in boats are putting their lives at risk because their life is so unbearable that they choose to come here for a better life, just like expats. In some ways, it could be seen as very brave. It’s time to stop using such narrow-minded and racist language on such a sensitive issue, especially when people are risking their lives and dying just for the chance for opportunities that the rest of us take for granted. Being lucky in which part of the world you were born in doesn’t give you the right to demean those less fortunate. Many expats come to Spain and make no effort at all to adapt to the culture and way of life. If the human race were to change its diet to meat free this situation would fade. No early release WITH news this weekend of another Islamist terrorist attack in London, Prime Minister Boris Johnson is under attack and being pushed for answers as to why an Islamist terrorist was freed from prison early allowing him to commit a bloody atrocity within days, despite his own pleas to be kept behind bars for longer. When the London Bridge terror attack happened in November Johnson promised he would end automatic early release for terrorists. However, he is again facing anger about the ‘lack of progress’ with the changes leaving the capital open to another attack just months later. Sudesh Amman walked free last week, halfway through a three year and four-month sentence for 13 terror offences. On Sunday he rampaged through Streatham high street, stabbing two before he was shot dead. The Queen’s Speech in December committed to bringing forward legislation to remove the possibility of early release for the most dangerous offenders. However, the Counter-Terrorism Bill that would bring the measures into force has yet to be published and there is no timetable for it to start going through Parliament. Johnson’s recent comments echoed those made after London’s last terror attack when two people were killed by convicted terrorist Usman Khan in December. Khan, 28, had been attending a prisoner rehabilitation event after being released on licence in December 2018. Last month details of The Counter-Terrorism Bill were released. They included forcing dangerous terrorists who receive extended sentences to serve the whole time behind bars and stopping early release from jail for those classed as dangerous.

Specsavers Ópticas in Santa Ponsa donates over 500 pairs of glasses to help those in refugee camps in the Sahara THE team at Specsavers Ópticas in Santa Ponsa has donated more than 500 pairs of glasses and sunglasses to a hospital supporting refugees in Algeria. The glasses are being donated to the National Hospital in Rabuni, providing aid to refugees in camps 30 kilometres from Tindouf in Algeria. It will help adults and children living in the camps to improve their vision, protect their eyes from the sun and improve their quality of life by reducing the chances of vision loss and improving their opportunities to continue their studies. Esperança Mas Alcover, one of the volunteers who travelled to Tindouf in the middle of the Sahara desert to deliver the donation, explains: ‘Due to the sun and how it reflects on the sand,

there are many people with poor eye sight in the area.’ The donation of glasses came about thanks to one of the employees of Specsavers Ópticas Santa Ponsa, Mariló Frasquet, who suggested they get involved with the project. The store director Andrés Román said he was delighted that his team was so committed to charitable causes such as this and happy to support it wherever possible. He also thanked volunteer Esperança Mas Alcover, for her hard work in taking the donated glasses and distributing them to the refugees. Esperança travelled to the Sahara with four other volunteers to help the Saharawi people. She says: “As well as glasses we took 20kg of medicines which are very hard to come by in this area. We

also delivered school supplies, sports clothes and warm clothes for babies, children and adults, along with foods that are expensive and difficult to get in the area.” Rosa Alcover also travelled with the group, as part of her role in the Balearic Association of Friends of the Saharaui People (Asociación Balear de Amigos del Pueblo Saharaui). Their project Holidays in Peace (Vacances en Pau) allows children between nine and 12 years old to travel to the Balearic Islands to enjoy the summer months in peace, away from the heat of the desert. During their stay they also undergo a full medical check and can be treated for any conditions which are discovered. Part of the reason for their visit, as well

as to deliver the donations, was to reconnect with children who had stayed in Mallorca in recent years and make sure they were happy and well cared for, according to Esperança. Describing the living conditions in these refugee camps, Esperança says: “Unfortunately these people had to leave their homes and their land and are living in the middle of the desert. After 40 years and thanks to support from Algeria and the international community they now have electricity and there is water delivered by lorry several times a year, but resources are still limited, so all help is very welcome.” She adds: “There are many programmes being run in the area to improve the refugees’ quality of life, healthcare and education including the creation of

One Sauce, two meals! LIKE a lot of people, every now and then I have the craving for something a bit spicy with big flavours. Spicy and fragrant is the way I like to go, not too hot, not something that will strip the taste buds from the tongue, but something that will gently warm and fill my mouth with interesting flavours. Once made, a curry

sauce will last for days and can provide the base for a couple of very different meals. This one is very simple and I got two suppers in a week from it. A chicken biryani and fish curry, made with some brilliant frozen hake fillets. In a frying pan soften some finely chopped onions. Once they start to

colour add some garlic and grated ginger. After a n o t h e r minute add a teaspoon of g a r a m masala and chilli powder. Add a small amount of water to loosen the mixture, then a small carton of tomato passata. Season with salt and pepper and let it thicken and putter away for about 10 mins. Add a tablespoon of plain yoghurt and mix in a cube of butter to finish. The sauce is now ready. I had it with some cubes of

chicken breast that I’d marinated in yoghurt and spices then cooked under the grill and added to some basmati rice with a couple of spoons of the sauce. A few days later I gently poached some chunks of defrosted hake and added some blanched green beans. Enjoy!

Split personality hybrid VAUXHALL is continuing its journey towards electrification with the new Grandland X Hybrid4 all-wheel drive plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. This is Vauxhall’s first-ever plug-in hybrid and features state-of-the-art plug-in hybrid technology. The car’s powertrain comprises a 200hp, 1.6-litre turbocharged direct injection four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric drive system with two electric motors, all-wheel drive and a 13.2kWh lithium-ion battery. Together, the Euro 6d-TEMP-compliant petrol engine and electric motors produce up to 300hp, and offer a combined fuel consumption of 204mpg, emitting just 34g/km CO2. The Grandland achieves 060 mph in just 5.9 seconds. The front electric motor is coupled to an electrified eight-speed automatic transmission, while the second motor and differential are integrated into the electrically-powered rear axle, providing all-wheel traction on demand. Four driving modes are available, electric, hybrid, AWD and Sport. In pure electric mode, the car has a range of 35 miles. In hybrid mode, the car automatically se-

Sexy supermini THE new Peugeot 208 GT Line Puretech 130 is an eyecatching new supermini featuring exterior styling which could fairly be described as radical for the supermini market. ‘Lion claw’ daytime running lights, conspicuous three-digit badge on the nose, bulging wheel arches, cartoonish proportions and bright mustard-yellow paint make it stand out from its contemporaries. Whereas the previous 208 looked as normal as you like inside, the new model really pushes the boat out. Youngest Ever Reds Go Through LIVERPOOL’S youngest-ever starting line-up beat Shrewsbury Town to set up an FA Cup fifth-round tie at Chelsea. They edged past the League One side through Ro-Shaun Williams’ own goal. With the Reds’ senior players enjoying the inaugural Premier League winter break, under23’s boss Neil Critchley led a side at Anfield containing seven teenage outfield players. At 0-0, Shrewsbury had a Shaun Whalley goal disallowed by the video assistant referee (VAR). Whalley thought he had given the Shrews the lead, but his header was disallowed when VAR ruled there had been an offside in the build-up. The visitors had come from 2-0 down to force a fourth-round replay, but could not recover after defender Williams headed past his own keeper from Liverpool right-back Neco Williams’ cross. It was a great evening out for the Shrewsbury players and fans with the gate revenue surely welcomed from the smaller club.
