THE only upside of Storm Gloria is the fact that Malaga reservoirs have been topped up with the equivalent of approximately four month’s supply of water for the province. According to Hidrosur network data, the recorded increase in reservoir levels is almost 35 cubic hectometres, enough to meet the needs of Malaga until early June in theory. As of Monday, the dams contained 380 cubic hectometres, compared to just under 345 the week before, but this is still short of the 478.7 hectometres registered in January 2019. The biggest increase was recorded at the Casasola reservoir which is currently at 80.43 per cent capacity.

Acts of kindness YOU may all remember that in October Euro Weekly News held a spooktacular Halloween party where we invited all of our readers, friends, and residents to help us celebrate and raise funds for the orphaned children at the Ciudad de Los Niños in Malaga. The evening was a fangtastic success and through the help of our amazing local community, we smashed our €8,280 target by reaching a total of €10,016 to be donated to the vulnerable children. With the funds raised, we were able to buy some much needed gifts for the youngsters such as 29 new mattresses, a €100 clothing voucher each, Christmas hampers which included gifts and toiletry bags with aftershave and a tshirt and jacket each. To say the children were grateful is an understatement, but it showed that simple acts of kindness can make a huge difference in someone’s life. EWN has now received a lovely letter of thanks from the orphanage offering their most sincere gratitude for the gifts and the help that our Euro Weekly community has given them. Motoring accident A 44-YEAR-OLD man from Sayalonga has been reported dead after his car rolled down an embankment on the MA-4110, between Arenas and Corumbela. The Guardia Civil and Provincial Fire Brigade rushed to the scene, however, upon arrival they found that the victim had already passed away.
Nerja tradition COUNCILLOR for Popular Traditions of the Nerja Council, Elena Gálvez, has presented the programme of the Carnival of Nerja, from February 20 to 23. CARNIVAL is just around the corner in Velez-Malaga. The council has now unveiled the programme of events organised along with the Peña Axarquia and running over the weekend of February 7 to 9. Highlights will include the classic street procession on the Saturday afternoon. Beginning at 5.30pm it will start off in the Pilar district of the town and end up i n t h e m a rq u e e o n t h e P a s e o de Andalucia, where there will be a carnival party with DJs providing the music. That night there will be a prize giving for the best costumes. On the Sunday at 12 noon there will be another party on the Paseo de Andalucia, this time with children’s entertainment from the Teatro La Carpa. Anyone wishing to take part in the procession on February 8 has until Friday February 7 to request participation at the VelezMalaga Town Hall Ferias y Fiestas delegation from 11am to 2pm or at the Peña Axarquia on the day of the procession from 4.30pm to 5.30pm.

Costa Tropical’ s first five-star hotel ALMUÑECAR has officially unveiled details of what is set to be the Costa Tropical’s first five-star hotel. Almuñecar mayor Trinidad Herrera, Tourism councillor Daniel Barbero, Granada Tourism delegate Gustavo Rodriguez and the promotor Trinitario Betoret, presented the Gran Hotel Cortijo de Andalucia project at the FITUR international travel fair in Madrid. The delegation maintained the hotel will open its doors soon now legal issues in which the project was immersed have been resolved. The Tourism councillor expressed satisfaction in confirming works are due to resume shortly, the building being 80 per cent completed. Located on an 18,000-hectare plot, most of which is gardens and relaxation areas, facilities will include a heated indoor pool, a thermal spa and outdoor pools created in the form of a beach. It will also offer meetings and conference facilities. Trinitario Betoret thanked the council for its support and for “providing us with a solution so that we can now fulfill our dream.”

Lucky Malaga ONCE again the luck of the lotto continues to smile on Malaga. The winning ONCE ticket has scooped the prize of €2,000 per month for the next 10 years and was distributed last Sunday, alongside this Tuesday’s draw which also delivered another €210,000 to Malaga. The winning tickets were sold by Raquel Torres Caña, who had five award-winning coupons with €35,000 at her lottery office located on Calle Miguel Moya, thus distributing a prize of €175,000. Meanwhile, Alejandro Bueno López, a lottery seller since 2002, has also distributed another award-winning coupon with €35,000 also in the city of Malaga. That makes a total prize of €210,000 which has been distributed recently in the Andalucian province.

Discount store arrives in Motril THE British chain of discount stores Dealz is continuing its Andalucia expansion with the opening of a brand new outlet in Motril’s Rambla de la Brujas commercial centre earlier this month. This is the company’s second shop to open its doors in Granada Province; it already has a store in Granada City. The newest outlet has a staff of 14, bringing the total number of Dealz employees in Spain to 469 employed in 25 stores altogether. “The aim of Dealz is to transform shopping into a simple and fun experience due to a selection of more than 2,000 products for €1.50 or less,” explained Dealz director general for Europe, Mark Elliott. “In our establishments families can find everything they need: to fill the larder, update wardrobes or decorate the home. All this thanks to a wide

What makes the shopping experience different from traditional outlets however, it says, is that 60 per cent of the range on offer corresponds to other segments, including clothing, stationery, DIY, homeware and decorating, entertainment and party products, with the emphasis on a combination of quality and low prices. Dealz maintains that the combination
of variety and proximity, a policy of rounded-up prices and being a complement to supermarkets makes the outlets places where families can add to their weekly shop. The Motril shop means the company now has 5,862sqm and 116 directly employed staff in Andalucia in its outlets in Huelva, Torremolinos, Malaga, Granada and Jerez de la Frontera. The Motril store boasts the latest design which the company is implementing in its points of sale, with a new distribution of items, a more modern look, better lighting and a more varied selection. The company also revealed there are plans to expand on its toys and fashion offers in the coming months. Dealz.es is one of the Pepco Group’s three commercial brands, together with Poundland in the UK and PEPCO in Central Europe, which currently has more than 135 shops in Ireland, Spain and Poland.

THE ‘Sabor a Malaga’ brand, created by the provincial council to promote Malaga’s gastronomic products, carries out various reinforcement actions for its promotion in the United Kingdom in order to position itself in this
market before Brexit. The first vice president of the Diputacion de Malaga and person responsible for the area of Sustainable Economic Development, Juan Carlos Maldonado, said on Monday, that the disconnection between
Great Britain and the European Union can be an ‘opportunity’ to strengthen the trade balance of both territories. Maldonado explained that in 2018 Malaga exported €73 million to the United Kingdom in tropical products, textiles or telecommunications, among others but imported €139 million, so it has considered that the trade balance is ‘deficit.’ He has warned that after the departure of the United Kingdom from the EU, Malaga products will have barriers to enter the country, so it is intended that the products of Malaga have a ‘preferential’ place for the British with respect to those of other competitors. He stressed that they are working with the British Consulate to promote the products of the province’s food brand in British fairs specialising in gastronomy and find distributors in the UK or propose policies to reduce tariffs with the UK.

EVOCATIVE SOUNDS: The Casa de la Cultura will host a night of tango on Thursday February 6.
Cultural agenda THERE is a packed cultural agenda in Almuñecar in February, with events ranging from theatre and dance to classical concerts, art exhibitions, and of course, the carnival celebrations. The month kicks off this Saturday with a musical production of Alice in Wonderland at the Casa de la Cultura. The same venue hosts a concert by the TamarizContreras sextet next Monday February 3, while on Thursday evening there will be the evocative sounds of Argentina with a night of tango. Jazz and funk lovers will want to make the following night, Friday February 7, a date with the ‘One for my baby’ concert. Musical highlights coming up later in the month include more flamenco on the evening of Sunday 9, the Best of Blues with Ray Farrell on Friday 14 and a concert by the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra on Sunday 23. An exhibition of erotic art runs from February 8 to 22 in the Casa de Cultura’s exhibition hall.

FOR LOVE OF THE GAME By Damon Mitchell
EURO WEEKLY NEWS had the pleasure of talking to British expat Sheila Clifford this week. Sheila is one of the only female members of the Walking Football League Spain and at 62 years old she is first to admit that her body feels a little slower. But her mind is well and truly in the game! Growing up in South London she considered herself a bit of a tomboy. She would rush home from school to play football with the boys on the council estate. Each block of flats would play against the other with the caretaker as referee, however, he wouldn’t let her play in the bigger games because she was a girl and in those day’s football was thought to be a boys sport. Being such a valued player her playmates even offered to pretend she was a boy, so she didn’t miss out. One day, she heard that they were holding trials for Chelsea women’s team and with her
Sheila (bottom row second left) with her Chelsea teammates. passion and skills she managed to get in, she enjoyed it so much she managed to talk her best friend into joining too. The team was unstoppable and used to train on Clapham Common and then Hackney Marshes. Sheila has many fond memories of her time with Chelsea but when asked by EWN of her proudest she said: “One that stands out is in my Chelsea days is when we played QPR’s A team in the five-a-side semi-final. QPR was

unbeatable every year, but we were youngsters and well-skilled we beat them, and we were so proud. We went on to play their B team in the final the next week and beat them too.” After a time she moved to Bournemouth and began working as a Drug and Alcohol Support Worker in the prison service. Her football career had gone on the back burner but here she found they had a Prison Service national team and her passion was reignited.
The team was invited to play in Australia in a worldwide championship that included players from all the emergency and prison services. Not only was it a trip of a lifetime but her team won the Gold medal. Sheila moved to Spain from Bermuda just over two years ago in September 2018. She now lives in Riogordo village, Malaga but unable to slow to a Spanish pace she wanted to find something to do with her time and keep her active.
Her friend Paddy recently introduced her to Walking Football which is aimed at people over 50 who want to continue to play the game they love but without the running and the contact involved with normal football. She trains with the players every Thursday and just played her first official match with team Aston Viñuela where she scored a goal for the winners. The club has allowed her to make new friends like her other female teammate Julie Pollitt and given them a social platform that includes the game they are so passionate about. Sheila is so passionate about the sport and plays in her favourite team’s colours, no not Chelsea blue but Manchester United red. She points out “I love football, playing it, watching it and can talking about it to anybody.” And goes on to say, “I don’t have any regrets but I wish I was born 40 years later. Look at it today there are so many opportunities for girls now.”

In essence, goods being sent from British ports to Belfast will be subject to EU rules and will need to be checked by British customs and the same will be true of goods coming from Northern Ireland to the UK. Meanwhile in an interview with the BBC, Irish Taoiseach (prime minister) Leo Varadkar claimed that UK politicians didn’t understand Ireland at all and that the future of the Irish border was central to trade deal negotiations. He went on to confirm that it was clear in the agreement with the EU that there will have to be some

Declaration of overseas assets Expatriates living in Spain who are considered Tax Residents are required to submit Form 720 to the tax authorities listing assets held overseas if their value amounts to €50,000 or more in certain categories. There are three groups which are relevant and you only need submit the declaration for any group where your assets exceed the €50,000 limit. THE three groups are: • Bank Accounts which are already open, or for which you are already an account holder during the year which corresponds to the declaration. The valuation should be based on whichever is the highest the balance as at December 31 or the average balance for the last quarter of the year. • All types of financial assets which includes information on securities, assets, shares or amounts representing the capital stock of all types of companies, or the transfer of capital to third parties held abroad, as well as life insurances for which the individual is the beneficiary and annuities or temporary income of which they are the beneficiary. The valuation should be based on the value on December 31 of the year being declared. • Real estate of all types

In real life, a president who controls many proxies is far more likely to act as a benevolent dictator to run the community effi ciently. And that is why members continue to support him.

New UK overdraft rates WHEN you consider that the Bank of England Base Rate is just 0.75 per cent and savers are doing well to obtain interest at 3 per cent, consumers must be wondering how the High Streets banks can justify introducing new overdraft rates of almost 40 per cent! The Financial Conduct Authority instructed the banks to be more transparent with charges for unau thorised overdrafts and accepted that there might be some need to increase approved overdraft rates but apparently relied on the expec tation that banks would be com petitive keeping down costs.
NEW RATES: Banks could be on to another good thing
Unemployment down in 2019 THE latest survey on employment in Spain, published by the National Statistics Institute, showed that by the end of 2019 unemployment had dropped to 13.78 per cent, the lowest annual fig-
ure since 2008. With the creation of 402,300, the total number unemployed in Spain is now 3,191,900 but the 2019 new jobs total is the lowest since 2014 and a large amount
still encompasses temporar y jobs based on the run up to Christmas. Andalucia has seen the largest fall in unemployment with 41,900 people finding jobs.
They are now surprised to dis cover that the majority of banks have settled on an annual rate of between 39 and 40 per cent and have asked the banks to explain their thinking behind both the charges and the lack of competi tion. In addition, they have asked how the banks will deal with those who are worse off under the new sys tem and their response will be awaited urgently by those who may be affected. When many banks introduced daily charges it was clear that there was an overall increase to the con sumer and now if these new rates go through unchanged, an autho rised overdraft is likely to be more expensive than using a credit card. Whilst there may be savings for those who used unauthorised over drafts, it is estimated that around 19 million people who have ac counts with UK banks have autho rised overdrafts and it could mean that they will be paying £400 (€450) interest on every £1,000 (€1,150) they borrow from the banks.

Super saver SAINSBURY’S, Britain’s second largest supermarket chain has pledged to spend £1 billion (€1.15 billion) in order to ensure that by 2040, its net carbon emissions are reduced to zero, but this does not cover the emissions produced by its suppliers.

The utterly common sense starved British plod, is now encouraging members of the public to report ‘hateful white people, even if they have committed no crime’! They have actually released a short cartoon video, which depicts a number of extreme acts by snarling white thugs as examples of the ‘hate’ they consider unacceptable. One shows a man pulling off a Muslim woman’s hajib. Another depicts a crew cut individual abusing a black shopkeeper and a further example demonstrates a crestfallen black schoolboy being refused permission to board a bus. Can’t these naive morons get

into their thick, left wing biased mentality, that this ‘cartoon’ is in itself reverse racism at its very worst? Can they also not understand quite how open to abuse a directive of this nature can be? This is an invitation for all ethnic minorities to report
the white population for just about anything they consider not quite to their liking. An opportunity to create a positive tsunami of time wasting frivolous racist accusations. How long before the complaints begin to pour in that
someone felt they were, looked at in a ‘wrong way’ or ‘bumped into’ purposely? We already had the case of the Muslim person who considered a driver honked his horn aggressively. That accusation could be considered a near homicide compared to the level of nonsense claims that could now almost certainly descend on the authorities. Can our esteemed snowflake appeasers also not understand that rubbish of this ilk drives even more of a wedge between the beleaguered indigenous population and its ethnic counterparts; pushing them even further apart? And what about the other way around? What about the highly objectionable verbal accusations of being ‘privileged white men,’ publicly voiced by black lady TV panellists of late? I don’t hear anyone complaining about these blatant racist outbursts. Well of course
not. Can’t upset the minorities can we? Thank the Lord that with my choice of residence I don’t have to put up with it all. Mind you, only last week I was actually told to ‘go back to my own country.’ Although I am aware that there are recourses in Spain for this type of behaviour, I simply shrugged it off as an ignorant isolated remark. A brainwashed UK citizen would probably have run crying to the authorities and got the perpetrator six months! Fortunately Spain has got its priorities right. Not a great deal of ‘nanny state’ nonsense over here, I’m delighted to say. What a shame the country I love has got it all so wrong, and allowed the snowflakes and ‘wokers’ to bring it to its knees. THE world’s largest audio streaming company, Spotify, has launched five-hour aural experiences to alleviate stress for dogs while their owners are at work. ‘My Dog’s Favourite Podcast’ includes messages of comfort and reassurance (recorded by actors) such as: ‘I’d stay here and stroke you all day long if I could.’ And: ‘It makes me so happy to start the day off seeing your happy face.’ Plus: ‘You just take it easy today. This is your chance for some well-earned me time.’ Spotify is also launching a Pet Playlists feature based on a user’s musical tastes and their animal’s personality. In other words, users who say their cat is shy and withdrawn will be recommended different songs from those who say their pet is active.
Personally, someone saying: ‘You just take it easy today. This is your chance for some well-earned me time’ is not what I like to hear on podcasts, but I suppose a dog’s tastes are quite different! I’d imagine enthusiastic assurances about how ‘tasty’ their supper will be would be more effective (as long as it doesn’t sound too much like a script for a Donald Trump pep rally. Talking of whom, considering that my frying pan needs replacing, does anyone know where his Teflon coating comes from?). And another thought. Wouldn’t natural sounds make lonely dogs feel happier, rather than unfamiliar actors’ voices? A neighbour tried similar stress-alleviation videos for cats on YouTube on their moggies. After a few minutes they lost interest and sloped off in such a low energy way they could win a climate change award. I wonder what effect playing YouTube has on dogs? As for my parents’ dogs, leaving Radio 3 switched on worked a treat. PET PLAYLIST: Based on an animal’s personality.

Replacing a lost or expired British passport from Spain W I T H B re x i t p o s s i b l y a ro u n d t h e c o r n e r, i f y o u h a v e l e s s than six months life left on your passport it would be a good idea to renew sooner rather than later. Quite often when different official forms are digitalised, it becomes more rather than less confusing and you need to have a degree in programming in order to proceed. For once however, the British government has made things much easier and far less complicated in applying for a replacement passport if yours has been lost or is about to expire. No longer do you need to supply lots of forms including birth certificates and to have a photograph physically signed on the back by someone who knows you and it really is now quite easy if you have access to a computer. Very simply visit https://www.gov. uk/overseas-passports and you’re taken through the whole process step by step and the only drawback is that there isn’t a single page detailing everything including costs as you have to go through a page at a time. There is however a passports link which does give quite a lot of information on the website, but not everything. Even if you have lost or had your passport stolen, you are not precluded for applying online for a replacement, but you have to declare it lost in advance also online. As a real bonus you can now use digital photograph and there are quite explicit rules about what is acceptable as you navigate the website and whilst it may take a couple of attempts, provided you remove any glasses and stand in front of a
white background, a selfie taken with a phone will probably work ok. If you are not happy using a phone camera, then most towns have at least one print shop where they can photograph you and give you a digital image on a memory stick or card. As you progress through the procedure you will be best served by having access to details of your previous passport, but it isn’t actually essential and the site does report back to a human in the UK who can check. When you post your photograph, you will be asked to give details (including email address) of a person of standing who can confirm that they know you and that the photograph is of you. The whole process can take up to six weeks from start to finish and this will include delivery via courier to your address in Spain and you have to pay with a debit or credit card for the cost of the passport (depends upon number of pages) and courier fee at the time of submitting the application online. You will be sent a special code which will allow you to track your passport through all of its stages. In the event that you have lost your passport and need a temporary replacement, that can also be done online. It is more expensive than a normal passport, is usually good for one round trip only and will normally be issued by the British Consulate in Malaga. For those without computers, it is still possible to apply through the post and there are even different shops with English-speaking staff scattered around Spain where for a fee they will help you complete the forms and send them off for you.

Too much choice of everything MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I’VE never been much use at DIY. In fact, I can just about spell it! One of the reasons is all the tools you need. A perfect example of this is screwy things and my major problem is why can’t there be just one type? Let me explain. One of the folding handles on my wheelchair became loose and fell out. I found it, put it back in and went to get my Swiss army knife which is my entire tool kit. I then found it needed something called an Allen key which was obviously invented by some geezer called Allen. I just googled it and it was! Anyway, I didn’t have one or anything that would tighten up this thing. Which made me think, why do we have to have so many different heads on these bolts and screws? There is Phillips, posidrive, flat head, Allen what’s the point? Why not just have one? Do we really need bugle heads, round head, pan head, button head and, of course, my personal favourite
the flange head. I’m sure some expert will tell me it’s all about torque, but la la la la I’m not listening. There is too much choice of everything. Take coffee - all you need is black or white not 12 varieties that Starbucks do. And, for sure, why do we need a coffee called Kopi Luwak which is made from... wait for it cat poo! All the poncey names too. All of a sudden Doris the tea lady has become a Barista. I thought that was someone who defended you in court when you have been knicked. I don’t know what’s happening with government run stuff here. I still haven’t got my Spanish driving licence which I applied for last May. So technically I can’t drive anywhere except Spain. Tried to book my car in for ITV and was told it might get done in March even though it runs out end of January. Surely it can’t all to be to do with Brexit? I’ve been watching the Trump impeachment on TV and find it fascinating. I also listen to him speak and read his Twitter rants. And that’s what they are - Fox fed rants. I still can’t understand how anyone can really believe he is the greatest POTUS ever, but they do. Just remember whether Trump is found guilty or not - he’s guilty!

SCOOTER MADNESS DEAR Euro Weekly, I am writing to you regarding electric scooters, which are all the trend right now. They are dangerous things that shouldn’t be allowed. If you allow them on the pavements you get people with serious injuries and the drivers facing jail time. If you allow them on the roads, you get accidents and people on scooters getting killed. It’s a lose-lose situation either way. I don’t think bike lanes are a good idea either, apart from the fact that people on scooters seem set on disobeying the law. The only viable solution is a lane specific to scooters, and I can assure you tax payers don’t want to finance that! For now, the simplest resolution is to ban them completely. Of course, they aren’t our biggest problem, but they are a problem. Let’s get rid of them once and for all, please! Tony Richards Torrox Costa
No need for weed EURO WEEKLY, There is an issue that needs to be addressed by all of us. Marihuana is a powerful drug that is absolutely rampant in most countries. In the UK it’s also a big problem, although maybe its consumption is more private than here in Spain. I live close to the centre of Alicante and I smell it almost every time I’m out and about. I’m not condemning the use of marihuana in any way, and I believe that it can be good for things like Parkinson’s. But there needs to be control over the use of this powerful drug. At what point did smoking marihuana become normalised? It’s not the same as smoking a cigarette and we need to remind the younger generation of this. Governments need to step their game up and put laws in place that can control the situation. In this day and age, it should be possible to stop the crime and devastation surrounding this drug. Joining together DEAR EWN I’m glad that as a mostly British community we are also getting stuck in with our Spanish compatriots. In Costa Blanca in Orihuela we are now battling the new multilingualism laws that have been approved for the upcoming school year. As parents, we are pretty worried how this will affect our children. My wife and I have two children in school who speak Spanish almost

fluently, but barely any Valencian. Classes in Valencian would be very hard for them, and me and my wife already discussed moving them to a British school. Despite these struggles, the recent protests have been really nice for us in the community. Awards season THIS week, Deborah Dugan, the former CEO of the Recording Academy, the body that oversees the Grammy Awards, filed a discrimination lawsuit against her former employer days ahead of the annual ceremony. It included allegations of gender discrimination, and corruption, casting a shadow of doubt and mistrust on the award system revered as music’s highest honour. Dugan mentions in her claims that huge worldwide artists of colour such as Beyoncé, Kanye West, and Mariah Carey, were snubbed in previous years, and that the biggest awards tend to go to rock, country, and pop artists. She then outlined how the Grammy voting process is allegedly tainted. Submissions for awards are initially voted on by members of the Academy, however, once these nominations are whittled down, the board promotes artists they have relationships with, and ‘manipulates the nominations process’ to include artists they want to perform during the ceremony. In her legal filing, Dugan blamed the ‘boys’ club’ mentality of executives as influential factors that were ultimately reflected in the voting process for annual Grammy nominations. During Dugan’s short time as CEO of the Academy, she was adamant about making changes to address public concern that the Grammys were becoming outdated and failed to showcase a more diverse pool of musicians. The Recording Academy denied the rigging accusations in a statement saying, “Spurious allegations claiming members or committees use our process to push forward nominations for artists they have relationships with are categorically false, misleading and wrong.” With shadows cast over many of these long-running awards ceremonies can they ever go back to awards for pure merit?

DAVID WORBOYS THE first holiday abroad was planned as a hitchhiking holiday from Calais to Zurich in 1958. We set off optimistically and managed 60 kilometres from Calais, achieving just two lifts, before giving up the next day and returning to England to spend three days in a Dover coffee bar listening to the Everly Brothers on the juke box. We eventually got as far as Torquay. But we had been fascinated by a different world beyond the channel - the ubiquitous deux-chevaux, driving on the right, amber beer, Gauloise cigarettes, open street urinals and men wearing berets. It sowed the seeds for a love affair with the continent of Europe. The following year we stayed for two weeks in a hotel by the beach near Rimini. The Adriatic sparkling in the sunshine, the

stunning mountain and coastal scenery, the gorgeous girls and the beautiful language left a lasting impression. After that I felt a close attraction to Europe. By the time

I had got to know the cities of Paris, Nice, Venice, Barcelona, Granada, Munich, Zurich, Stockholm, Copenhagen and Amsterdam. All these cities were com-
pletely different. This fascinating part of the world encompassed an incredible variety of history, culture, language, gastronomy and temperament in such a small area. And soon we were able to travel freely around without border controls - if we avoided Switzerland. I felt a sense of security that, having being twice rebuffed by de Gaulle, we were finally
admitted to join six economically successful nations with the opportunity to play a leading role in restraining French domination and drawing on our own history to make a positive contribution. We had access to the free movement of citizens, goods and services within the zone, free of customs tariffs. We had guaranteed support against disputes and threats of aggression from outsiders. But it soon became evident to me that Britain, obsessed with all things American, never really belonged to Europe in spirit. Other member countries had close cultural and social links and frequent communication - from small villages to national institutions - but Britain stayed largely on the periphery as observers rather than participants. The widespread mockery of France, a cold attitude towards Germany and suspicion of most things ‘foreign’ suggested we didn’t really want to belong.

Little smokers ALMOST half of the children admitted to hospital for asthma are passive smokers, according to a study conducted at the Gregorio Marañón Hospital in Madrid. The information coincides with data given by the World Health Organisation, that states 40 per cent of children are exposed to passive smoking at home. In Spain, the prevalence of childhood asthma is estimated at around 10 per cent. Up until now, it was known that babies born of smoking mothers had diminished lung function and that children exposed to passive smoking also suffered an alteration of their lung capacity. The study analysed the situation of 365 children who, at some time between 2011 and 2015, were admitted to hospital due to an asthmatic crisis. It revealed that 41 per cent of children who had severe asthmatic crises were subjected to passive smoking at home. The average age of patients in the paediatrics ward was five and the duraTHREE MILLION people in Spain suffer from osteoporosis, a degenerative disease that affects the density and quality of the bones. The name literally translates to ‘porous bone’ and causes bones to become increasingly fragile. It is this fragility in the bones that causes them to fracture easily. In Spain, more than 330,000 bone fractures are called by the disease every year, especially in the hips and forearms. The danger of the condition is the difficulty to detect it. It is generally asymptomatic and only begins to show once its in an advanced state, preventing doctors from slowing its evolution. The main cause of bone deterioration is age and it begins to appear in people over 60. The body absorbs calcium to keep bones strong, but over time the absorption capacity decreases and bones become less dense. In addition to age, there are many other factors that can contribute to the onset of osteoporosis. Being a woman is one of the main factors, as the disease mainly affects women, while men only have a 13 per cent risk. Having a family history, being underweight, smoking, excessive alcohol and coffee consumption can also

Combining foods like fatty fish, dairy, nuts, legumes, green leafy vegetables and eggs with sun exposure should be sufficient. Physical exercise also helps to maintain bone health. It decreases the risk of fractures and if practised outdoors, it helps to absorb the necessary vitamin D. Toxic habits such as alcohol consumption or tobacco are discouraged, as they reduce the absorption of calcium and other important minerals including phosphorous and magnesium. After menopause women, or people with an increased risk of osteoporosis, should be reviewed. A test to measure bone mass allows doctors to make an exact diagnosis.

Although born in Sevilla, her childhood and adolescence were spent in the coastal town of Fuengirola. She trained as an actress at the Cimera d’Arte Drama School in Malaga, in addition to receiving classes in interpretation from other schools. On accepting the award she thanked her classmates: Penelope Cruz, Greta Fernández and Marta Nieto. Real fast Food MANY people get a certain image in their head when they hear the term ‘Fast Food.’ A burger, Chinese take away, chips, kebabs. They are deemed ‘Fast’ because the only time and effort you’ve had to make was ordering it or waiting for it to be delivered. This week I fancied something fast. I set myself the challenge of cooking two tapas dishes in five minutes. Add in the two minutes of preparation and I had two delicious dishes on the table for lunch in a total of about seven minutes. Gambas (Prawns) Al Ajillo and Padron Peppers made a very tasty lunch. Have ready two garlic cloves chopped, a red chilli deseeded and chopped and some parsley finely chopped.
Put the peppers in a small bowl and cover with water. That’s it, the prep is done. Get two pans on a high heat, when hot add olive oil to both pans. Take the peppers out of the water and shake excess water off, put carefully in the pan, they will spit a bit, but it’s the dampness of the peppers that will make them blister. Put the garlic and chilli in the other pan, leave a minute then add the whole prawns. A minute or two on each side, sprinkle in the parsley and remove to your serving dish. Cover with the juices from the pan. The peppers are ready when they have started to collapse in the middle. Sprinkle both dishes with sea salt. Enjoy!

BARRY DUKE LAST week, at considerable expense and after four days of extreme duress, I acquired a ‘Happiness Engineer.’ He wasn’t an anger management guru, but instead a helpline assistant working for the Wordpress company in America. Wordpress, for the record, is extensively used by bloggers such as myself, and for reasons best known to the bosses, they chose to saddle their assistants with the cheesy title of ‘Happiness Engineers.’ Only in America, huh? I was forced to communicate with Wordpress after a site I administer for a UK-based LGBT charity, the Pink Triangle Trust (PTT), went down - just as I was about to post an important item of news concerning a friend, Cliff James, who had just featured in a BBC documentary about paedophile priests in the Church of England. James had been a victim of abuse by the late Bishop Peter Ball. In a bid to avoid an expensive phone call to America, I tried to get the problem resolved by using

After my card was declined, I had no option but to call Wordpress. I gritted my teeth when the bloke at the other end of the line said ‘Hi, I’m Ghupta, your Happiness Engineer.’ After Ghupta proved as much use as a marshmallow dagger, DragonStack, a local website development company that designed my site, got onto Wordpress which said the matter would be sorted - after it received payment of $97.36! When I was emailed the bill, I again used my Barclays card. This payment was also rejected so I used my husband’s card instead. After that, I decided to take a breather and wait until the site was restored. Then I got a telephone call from Barclays’ fraud team, in-
forming me that, following my attempt to pay the $5, multiple efforts had been made to extract various amounts from my account. These ranged from £250,000 to £5 million. As I listened aghast to what Barclays was telling me, the conversation was suddenly terminated, and I had to call back for further information. For 35 minutes I was kept on hold, listening to annoying muzak. Then Barclays’ equivalent of a ‘Happiness Engineer’ asked me to log onto my online banking account, without saying why. When I tried to do so I found I was locked out. ‘Ah, that would be because your debit card has been blocked,’ said the assistant in an inappropriately cheery tone. When I said I needed to draw cash that day, she said ‘no worries, just pop into any branch with your card and a passport.’ I barked that this wasn’t an option as I live in Spain. Her reply? ‘Oh, that’s nice. What’s the weather like there?’ I screamed ‘it’s p***ing down stair rods! We have thunder and lightning and gale force winds!’ When she said ‘well, it’s lovely over here,’ my phone went flying across the room.

Arsenal Still Have FA Cup Insight ARSENAL’S youngsters led the side to an impressive 2-1 victory over Bournemouth in the fourth round of the FA Cup, setting up a tie with Portsmouth on the week commencing March 2. Eighteen-year-old Bukayo Saka lashed the Gunners into an early lead as he found space on the left-hand side of the box, before sending a thunderous strike through the fingertips of Mark Travers and into the roof of the Cherries net. A quick turn of pace saw Joe Willock go through one-on-one with the Bournemouth shotstopper, but the angle proved too tight for the youngster, who poked his effort into Travers’ midriff. The home side’s reprieve didn’t last long,

There are two ways of looking at this for Howe. On the one hand, Bournemouth’s performance was disappoint-
ing, to say the least. Their first-half display was unacceptable, with the south coast outfit struggling to keep pace with Arsenal’s intelligent off-the-ball movement. Howe’s worries were compounded by the strength of the lineup he fielded. This was an experienced group of players, yet they looked like rabbits in headlights against Mikel Arteta’s youthful Gunners team. There’s clearly some cause for concern. Nevertheless, this was an FA Cup fixture, and it’s plainly obvious which competition Bournemouth are prioritising. Several stars will be restored to the side once Premier League action resumes. That’ll give Howe a better chance to assess where his team are at mentally.
‘WALKING FOOTBALL SPAIN GO TOP OF THE LEAGUE’ DESPITE the poor weather during last Friday and Saturday morning which left some surface water on the pitch at Finca Naundrup it was declared playable. This turned out to be a good omen for the two Walking Football Spain (WFS) teams who were due to play the ‘old enemy’ Smiles. In this Blue Sky Marbella Walking Football League match WFA ‘A’ kicked off against Smiles 60’s ‘B’ team confident after two straight 6-0 wins. However the ‘B’s’ had a game plan to stop the flowing football of WFA ‘A’ and this succeeded as they dealt with the attacks prompted by Wright and Fitzpatrick from midfield. However WFA settled and with McGufferty holding the back steady soon began dominating the game and it wasn’t long before top scorer Jim Maguire put the WFA team into the lead. Smiles came back with an equaliser from Tim Van Dyke which took the WFS defence by surprise as they had not conceded a goal up to then. Half Time 1-1 WFA ‘A’ knew they had a game on their
hands after Smiles’ first half display but soon settled into their rhythm playing the passing game they are used to. This paid dividends as the ‘B’s’ defence was unable to cope with the constant attacks from Maguire and Woody despite good work from Carlos Jiminez in midfield. They both added to the first half score as WFA controlled the match as the ‘B’s’ tired with Shaun notching a sixth goal for WFS ‘A.’ This win from an impressive WFA ‘A’ team, acknowledged by Smiles player manager Gray Salt, took their League points tally to nine allowing them to overtake leaders Aston Viñuela and top the Blue Sky Marbella Walking Football League. RESULT WFS ‘A’ 6 SMILES 60’s ‘B’ 1 (Scorers Maguire 3, (Dave Woody 2, Shaun 1) Next match saw the Smiles 50’s ‘A’ team looking for their first league points with the opposition the other half of WFS... the ‘B’ team. This proved to be a more even match with much end to end play. Both keepers were on top form although Smiles
FINCA NAUNDRUP: Despite some surface water, the pitch was declared playable. keeper had to admit defeat in the 10th minute with a great shot from Jerard to put the ‘B’s’ one up. Just before half time a free kick just outside the box was expertly chipped by Dave Efford off a defender to give the ‘A’s’ the equaliser. The end to end play continued with neither side dominating allthough Jimenez for the ‘A’s’, playing his second game, kept pushing his team on in an effort to stop the counter attacks by the ‘B’s’. An inspired substitution by WFS coach,Woody, putting on Colin Machin paid dividends when the big forward latched on to a through ball and lashed it home from 15 yards to put the ‘B’s’ into
the lead. Despite efforts from the Smiles forwards they could not breach the WFS defence with the goalkeeper playing his part with several excellent saves. WFS ‘B’ played out the remaining time to record an impressive win against the Smiles top team. These two excellent victories were enough to put WFS ‘A’ top of the league with the ‘B’ team sharing second place with Aston Viñuela. WFS teams now face the Walking Dead teams, making their debut, in the League Cup on Wednesday 29th, at Finca Naundrup, Calahonda. Kick Off 6.30pm. Spectators welcome, Free entry.
