one, she would start it. She assisted patients and their families to get to their appointments and, as a qualified counsellor, offered her own services for free. The range of support provided by the group has grown year on year with many businesses also now contributing their services free of charge. In 2013 Christine was given a Citizen’s Award by the town hall of Calvia.

Satanic slaughter

PROTECTION: Research shows that hikers have negatively impacted the natural areas.

A RESIDENT made a shocking discovery at a farm in Camí de Es Comellà de Betzers in Santa Eugenia, finding several animals slaughtered and tied to trees.

Some of the animals, which included sheep, chickens and lambs, had been quartered, decapitated and had their guts removed, in what the police believe may have been carried out as part

of a sadistic satanic ritual.

The horrific find was called in by a homeowner on Christmas Eve, where officers from the Guardia Civil and Local Police then moved to the scene.

Upon an inspection of the farm they found five decapitated hens, a gutted sheep tied to a tree, with several lambs also being massacred close to a box labelled with animal sacrifice markings.

The police are now appeal-

ing for information on the deaths of the defenceless animals, with experts suggesting that the shocking act of cruelty was part of a black magic spell used in witchcraft.

For centuries, animals have been used in witchcraft, being revered and worshipped as spirits of nature.

Common rituals involve using their body parts to communicate with spirits or make an offering to deities.

Special protection A GROUP of scientists have launched a campaign to ask that five natural areas in Mallorca are declared as a ‘Place of Geological Interest’ (LIG).

Made up of experts from the UIB and the Ministry of Environment, the group indicate the need to protect several mountains in the Serra de Llevant and Serra de Tramuntana, most specifically in Betlem, Galatzó, Tomir, Planícia and Puig Major.

Through research conducted this year, the scientists have determined that the areas are particularly vulnerable to

degradation and should therefore be considered as an LIG due to their scientific, cultural and educational value.

They believe that the mountains should be carefully managed due to the areas being particularly popular with hikers in the region, which has made a geological impact. In addition, it is asked that special attention is paid to its vegetation, which although is said to be very scarce at present, that it does have the potential to be extremely fruitful in the future.

Enduring legacy ROBERT WINSOR, a renowned British businessman and philanthropist, has sadly died at the age of 79 at his home in Mallorca, after suffering from a long illness.

Awarded an MBE by Queen Elizabeth in 2013 for his services to disabled children both in Mallorca and the UK, Winsor dedicated his life to helping the most disadvantaged groups in society.

The businessman was best known on the island for launching ‘The Robert Winsor Charity Golf Tournament’ at the Royal Bendinat Golf Club, where he was able to draw the support of British celebrities such as Jasper Carrott, Robert Powell, Jimmy Hill, Lance Percival and the late Kenny Lynch.

THREE KINGS DAY in Spain, or Dia de los Reyes, falls on January 6 each year - a day when most children in Spanish-speaking countries receive their Christmas presents.

On the eve of January 5, youngsters leave their shoes by the door anticipating the Three Kings will leave gifts inside them overnight.

Prior to this, children and their families excitedly await the kings’ arrival in their home villages or towns, on occasions via helicopter, where gifts are normally presented, before colourful processions during which thousands of sweets are thrown to children running alongside.

Another essential part of the Three Kings Day in Spain in the roscon de reyes, or kings’ cake. The ring-shaped pastry is decorated to look like a crown a king would wear, and often topped with glazed fruits to represent jewels. Inside the cake is a toy - a figurine of baby Jesus or a tiny king - and the person who finds it in their piece is said to have good luck for the year.

Whale tragedy ED: 1752 - JANUARY EXPERTS believe a 10 tonne common fin whale, which died on Mallorca’s Cala Millor beach at around 4am on Sunday, may have been weakened by an infection before being struck by a boat.

The 15-metre long mammal showed signs of severe weight loss and severe external wounds.

Luis Parpal, leading the team of professionals carrying out a post- mortem, told Spanish press that early indications suggest an infection, ‘toxicological or biological, had weakened the specimen, leaving it adrift.’

It’s believed ‘a boat later hit the whale causing the wounds.’

Parpal, manager of the Official Association of Pharmacists of the Balearic Islands (COFIB), explained the team wants to find out if there is an

ED: 1753 - FEBRUARY A MAN who was jailed for raping a young girl was reportedly planning to work as a childrens’ entertainer in Mallorca.

According to British press, Durham Crown Court heard that James Milburn, 19, did a stint working on the island, and on his return to England said he planned to return to work as a children’s holiday rep.

But, during this time, the mother of his victim reported the rape to the police. Shaun Dodds, prosecuting, reportedly said Milburn flew from Leeds Bradford Airport to Palma, on discovering he was being investigated,

But family members urged him to return and he was arrested by police at the airport when he landed.

Milburn apparently made no comment to police questions, but after the case was sent to the crown court, he admitted a charge of rape.

Liam O’Brien, defending, told the court there was nothing he could say to ‘diminish the pain and suffering of the victim in this case and that of her family.’

He said Milburn ‘was old enough to know right from wrong.’

Judge Jonathan Carroll imposed a six-year and nine-month custodial sentence and made Milburn subject to registration as a sex offender for life.

LANDSCAPE: The community is united in its bid to save the Selva valley, next to a UNESCO World Heritage Site, from development (insets).

EXPATRIATES and the Spanish community are taking a united stance to protect their ‘beautiful landscape’ under threat from industrial development.

There are proposals to build a 35,000 m2 solar power plant in the Selva valley at the foot of Sierra de Tramuntana.

The area, in the Raiguer district, is close to a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the community is both angry and upset that the rural area popular with residents and tourists has been earmarked for commercial use.

Speaking exclusively to Euro Weekly News, spokesperson for the group of protestors, Evita Wagner, said: “This is so wrong.

It is like a rape of the local heritage.”

As such, the objectors launched a petition opposing the plans, which received 1,200 signatures in less than three weeks, and they claim to have the support of the town hall of Selva.

Evita explained the agricultur-

al landscape is well-known for its beauty, particularly in the almond-flower season, and is a well established and popular cycling and hiking area.

She added: “The project, if built, will have a huge visual impact on the landscape. It will turn a traditional Mallorcan farm into an industrial site. The surrounding neighbours will see their property lose value when being fenced in by three-high panels.

“The Solar Power Station would be highly visible from most roads and towns on the hills - ironically also from a newly inaugurated and promoted nature hiking trail to Lluc.”

Finnish Evita, who has lived in the area for eight years, added: “We hope the Ministry of Territory, Energy and Mobility of Mallorca do not authorise this project. We are all for alternative energy but there are other areas more suitable.”

The closing date to oppose the project was Monday, and all objections will now be considered by the government.

“No matter what, we will keep fighting this,” said Evita.

ED: 1764 - APRIL A WOMAN suffering from cancer has completed a 110km walk along the Tramuntana mountain range. Magdalena Socias Moya, a 59-year-old emergency doctor and former long-distance runner, completed her trek on Monday.

Almost two years ago she was diagnosed with advanced cholangiocarcinoma, a malignant tumour in the bile ducts that occurs infrequently. Magdalena, who had started longdistance running when she was 50, kept up the sport until the cancer spread to her hip.

She had undergone chemotherapy, but it was not effective because the cancer had also spread to her ribs and vertebrae.

Undaunted she decided if she could not run any more, she would do a long distance walk instead, with the aim of raising cash for charity. Her

MALLORCA’S favourite son Rafa Nadal is about to tie the knot sooner than expected, according to Spanish TV. The news that the 17 times Grand Slam champion and native of Manacor was finally going to ‘do the decent thing’ and marry girlfriend of 14 years Xisco Perelló was first hinted at by Hola magazine in January.

But details have been hard ‘in the autumn’ date, with Nadal and Perelló remaining tight lipped about the event.

Now, according to the Socialité show on Telecinco, it has been revealed the wedding bells are set to ring in June at a private event.

The ceremony will be held in an abbey ‘in the north of Mallorca’ chosen because it has enough room to accommodate 500 guests as well as offering privacy from the prying lenses of the paparazzi.

Sun cream pollution ED: 1777 - JULY CRUISE ships are being blamed for a reported increase in pollution in Balearic waters, especially the discharge from the swimming pools.

The draining of the pools has led to a total of six environmental pollution alerts in Palma since 2010, and the last of them was one on July 8.

The Ministry of Public Works confirmed last Thursday that these discharges caused oily residue in the water due to the large amount of cosmetics and sun creams which have ended up mixed with the water of the swimming pools.

Once the vessel that caused the pollution has been detected, protocol requires an inspection to be

carried out at the port.

On all six of the reported incidents, it apparently became clear that the swimming pools were the source of the contamination.

In all the cases mentioned, after verifying that the discharges complied with the regulations, the ships were permitted to continue their journey and were not sanctioned after the inspection in the port, according to information provided by the Ministry headed by José Luis Ábalos.

The Ministry of Public Works has confirmed that all of the ships involved in such incidents were tourist cruise liners and that the water from swimming pools, showers, kitchens and the ship’s laundry was contributing to the concentration of harmful substances in the water, directly affecting Palma.

Town hall hacked ED: 1780 - AUGUST THE official profile of Palma City Council on Twitter became the target of a computer hack on Tuesday.

The town hall’s account on the social network was hacked by unknown individuals and insults and offensive messages have been posted aimed at the councillor for Culture and Social Welfare, Antoni Noguera.

After taking control of the account, the attackers changed the description of the town hall and wrote ‘Corrupt Town Hall.’ Also the profile picture which normally shows the façade of the town hall now shows a picture of a fist with a bundle of bills.

The account was hacked at approximately 11.30am

A FIRST: Pollensa will be home to Spain’s first port for seaplanes.

Seaplanes to land in Pollensa PALMA TOWN HALL: Its social media accounts were hacked on Tuesday morning. on Tuesday. ‘This account has been hacked due to corruption’ was the first message to appear followed by ‘FBI, Interpol, and police from different countries are searching for me for hacking corrupt individuals, do what you want, I will continue to fight against these sons of b*****s, find me if you can…’

The hacker also reportedly made direct threats to Councillor Noguera and his family through the account.

The situation lasted for about an hour until the town council reported that the account had been recovered and that the National Police and the Palma Police are investigating the incident.

ED: 1785 - SEPTEMBER

IT has been announced that Pollensa in the north of the island will become the first port in Spain where it will be possible to land privately owned seaplanes.

The president of the Mallorcan Aeronautical Foundation, Miquel Buades, confirmed that he has received a report from the Air Safety Agency for the eventual use of the bay of Pollensa as a hydrosurface for the planes and that a coordination agreement was also signed with the Air Force Base, according to

the Foundation.

Initially they will have permission for a maximum of 50 hydroplanes a year can land in the port. This will allow pilots of this type of plane to train in the area as it will be the only one in Spain; until now they had to go to Italy or France for training.

It should be noted that the area where the seaplanes can land will be limited in the bay itself.

The planes will land in the area of Punta Avançada which is quite far from the coast, as one of the requirements land far enough away from people so as not to disturb the residents.

Once a seaplane is in the water it is considered a boat so can dock in the port without problem.

Replacing a lost or expired British passport from Spain WITH Brexit possibly around the corner, if you have less than six months life left on your passport it would be a good idea to renew sooner rather than later.

Quite often when different official forms are digitalised, it becomes more rather than less confusing and you need to have a degree in programming in order to proceed.

For once however, the British government has made things much easier and far less complicated in applying for a replacement passport if yours has been lost or is about to expire.

No longer do you need to supply lots of forms including birth certificates and to have a photograph physically signed on the back by someone who knows you and it really is now quite easy if you have access to a computer.

Very simply visit https://www.gov. uk/overseas-passports and you’re taken through the whole process step by step and the only drawback is that there isn’t a single page detailing everything including costs as you have to go through a page at a time.

There is however a passports link which does give quite a lot of information on the website, but not everything.

Even if you have lost or had your passport stolen, you are not precluded for applying online for a replacement, but you have to declare it lost in advance also online.

As a real bonus you can now use digital photograph and there are quite explicit rules about what is acceptable as you navigate the website and whilst it may take a couple of attempts, provided you remove any glasses and stand in front of a white background, a selfie taken with a

phone will probably work ok.

If you are not happy using a phone camera, then most towns have at least one print shop where they can photograph you and give you a digital image on a memory stick or card.

As you progress through the procedure you will be best served by having access to details of your previous passport, but it isn’t actually essential and the site does report back to a human in the UK who can check.

When you post your photograph, you will be asked to give details (including email address) of a person of standing who can confirm that they know you and that the photograph is of you.

The whole process can take up to six weeks from start to finish and this will include delivery via courier to your address in Spain and you have to pay with a debit or credit card for the cost of the passport (depends upon number of pages) and courier fee at the time of submitting the application online.

You will be sent a special code which will allow you to track your passport through all of its stages.

In the event that you have lost your passport and need a temporary replacement, that can also be done online. It is more expensive than a normal passport, is usually good for one round trip only and will normally be issued by the British Consulate in Malaga.

For those without computers, it is still possible to apply through the post and there are even different shops with English-speaking staff scattered around Spain where for a fee they will help you complete the forms and send them off for you.

British triathlete dies ED: 1790 - OCTOBER TRAGIC news dominated the Challenge Peguera-Mallorca triathlon, with the death of a 45-year-old British man.

The incident occurred about 600 metres from the shore of La Torà beach around 10am on Saturday October 19. Lifeguards brought the man back to the beach, treating him until medics from the 061 emergency ambulance service arrived. Paramedics fought for over an hour to revive the man, who had reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest during the swimming leg of the half triathlon.

The competition’s organisers released a statement, extending their condolences “to all the family and people close to the athlete, whom we will continue to support.”

LET IT SNOW

THE first snow of autumn was recorded on Sunday, falling on the peaks of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) confirmed that there was a light covering of snow down to 1,000m as temperatures in the Tramuntana fell to a chilly 2°C. There were also heavy hailstorms which left coverings that looked like snow, where in the mountains, almost 70 litres of rain per m2 were registered by midday. A spectacular blanket of hail also took the city of Palma by surprise, with many vehicles suffering violent blows. Aemet has signalled the arrival of the Bernardo storm to Mallorca, the second major blast of the season which has been activated by wind, high seas and rain.

SNOWFALL: The Serra de Tramuntana recorded the first snow fall of the season in Mallorca.

On social networks, users shared images of other parts of the island, such as the Port de Pollensa, where many of its streets were covered with a white frosting of hail.

Homeless plight ing them warm, dry and most importantly safe. Moved by their cause, Stephen has decided to raise money to purchase the pods and distribute them to those that need them the most.

Speaking to Stephen, an electrician by trade, he expressed his desire to raise awareness about the plight of the homeless as “there is absolutely no need for the situation to continue in Mallorca.”

His work often brings him to luxury yachts where he has seen first hand the amount of waste that is accumulated and could be used to help those on the streets. Add vacant homes and boats at winter, and the huge amount of food leftover at restaurants, he believes a lot more can be done to help.

Stephen has so far raised over €1,000 which will be

used to buy 37 pods that are already on their way to the island. However, according to the Consell de Mallorca, this year there are an estimated 650 people living on the streets.

The sleep pods have proven to be a lifesaver for many people across Europe, being insulated, self warming, both wind and rain proof as well as being easy to use, providing an increased temperature of almost 20°C. Stephen also plans to spend a night on the streets once the sleep pods arrive where Euro Weekly News will keep you updated on his journey.

FINANCE Boxing Day fail

MOVE over Boxing Day, Black Friday is now collecting more money in the UK. Traditionally, crowds flock to the Boxing Day sales but there has been a much worse turn out than expected with one research compa­ ny suggesting that spending will be down just under 10 per cent com­ pared to last year.

It didn’t help that the weather was bad and some high street shops started their online sales on Christ­ mas Eve so shoppers could stay at home and still get the bargains.

THE success of the Deliveroo operation in the UK has seen it being wooed by heavy hitters such as Amazon and Uber who both wish to take it over.

It has grown very quickly since it was founded in London in 2013 and now has operations in many European and Asian countries including Spain.

Now it wants to sell part of its shareholding to Amazon which has been looking to get back into the rapidly expanding fast food delivery business but the British Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) isn’t so

Basically, Amazon has two options, one to buy into a company such as De­ liveroo or alternatively set up its own competing business (which it did in 2016 but soon pulled out) and the CMA fears that such an investment in the company could be bad for customers, grocers and restaurants as there would be reduced competition.

The CMA’s executive director, An­ drea Gomes da Silva, said: “Millions of people in the UK use online food plat­

forms for takeaways, and more than ever are making use of similar services for the same­day delivery of groceries and we are worried about lessening of competition.”

That then is the problem and unless and until the two companies are able to persuade the CMA that its fears are groundless, approval will not be given for the investment.

Any purchase in the UK is likely to in­ clude other markets such as Spain where Deliveroo operates in many large towns and cities.

The Calma Card AS an experiment, the Deutsche Bank and MasterCard are launching what they say is the first bank card in Spain to use motion code technology.

The Calma Deutsche Bank Card will allow the security code (shown by the CVC label on the reverse) to change auto­ matically every four hours in or­ der to increase security as it doesn’t allow thieves to clone or benefit by data theft on on­ line transactions This card also offers insur­ ance cover for theft or robbery to cover the value of any stolen purchases.

THE currency market was charac­ terised by its unpredictability in 2019, with heightened geopoliti­ cal tensions infusing significant volatility into the major curren­ cies.

And it looks like we may be in for more of the same in 2020 as many of the key 2019 currency trends look set to continue to dominate market sentiment over the next 12 months.

ECB and Germany could weak­ en the euro EUR/GBP in 2019: High £0.93, Low £0.82 EUR/USD in 2019: High $1.15, Low $1.08 The European Central Bank is al­ so likely to demand attention this year as it wrestles with an increas­ ingly fragile outlook in the Euro­ zone, not to mention Germany’s recent economic woes, which have

A wide­ranging review of the ECB’s strategy will begin in Janu­ ary, with Christine Lagarde (who took the helm at the ECB back in November) already signalling a willingness to deviate from the policy path forged by her prede­ cessors.

If further easing is unleashed to

support the currency bloc, or if Germany does indeed slip into a recession, the euro could tumble.

Brexit to keep pound pressured GBP/EUR in 2019: High €1.20, Low €1.06 GBP/USD in 2019: High $1.35, Low $1.20 For GBP investors, Brexit will re­ main the pressing issue. While Boris Johnson’s election victory

may have allowed him to success­ fully pass his EU Withdrawal deal, this marks the end of only the first stage of negotiations.

In 2020 Johnson will embark on phase two of the talks, which will see the UK attempt to hash out the terms of a trade deal and its future relationship with the EU be­ fore the end of its transition peri­ od in December.

With Johnson reluctant to pur­ sue any more delays, there is a clear risk of the process resulting in a no­deal Brexit at the end of the year, the threat of which is likely to limit any upside in the pound.

Trade and Trump to drive US dollar USD/GBP in 2019: High £0.83, Low £0.74 USD/EUR in 2019: High €0.91, Low €0.86 Across the pond we will see US politics return to the fore this year, with impeachment proceedings against Donald Trump and the

2020 Presidential election both likely to drive volatility in the US dollar.

We won’t know who will be the 2020 Democratic candidate for a few more months, but the poten­ tial for Trump to be challenged by a Democrat who is viewed as eco­ nomically disruptive, such as Bernie Sanders, could prove USD negative this year.

As EUR/USD is the world’s most traded currency pairing, any US dollar losses could support the eu­ ro.

Also in the spotlight for USD in­ vestors will be the ongoing trials and tribulations of the US­China trade talks.

With a preliminary phase one deal now apparently agreed by both sides, the focus will turn to whether a more comprehensive deal can be reached in 2020.

With so many key events on the calendar, 2020 could shape up to be even more volatile than 2019.

And so that was Christmas

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT SURROUNDED by family and friends, hopefully many of you will have once more enjoyed this special and much­ loved occasion. I’m pretty sure most of you will have also observed the ritu­ als and time­honoured Christmas Day traditions that we have been famil­ iarised with over the generations.

In the beginning we are the babies, crawling around the base of the tree with the young mums of the family lightly admonishing us as we endeav­ our to pull baubles and shiny bits of tinsel from the lower branches.

Over the next few years we morph into the youngsters, excitedly tearing off the paper from presents, brought by a Santa we are becoming slightly more skeptical about, but still pre­ pared to give the benefit of the doubt ­ just as long as we receive at least a proportion of the presents we asked him for!

The next stage in our Christmas generation game sees us become one of the young and mid­aged adults who, having finally got the youngsters off to bed, are pouring copious mea­

All being played out against a back drop of East Enders, Coronation Street, the Queen’s mes­ sage and yet another rerun of Dr Zhivago on the box.

Generations later, if we last long enough, we find ourselves in the twi­ light of our years, quietly enjoying the utterly spoiled and most loved exulted position you can attain. You become Grandpa/Grandma. And that’s where this ol’ boy has finally found himself.

Grandpa (or in my situation Great Grandpa) is expected to do just about

nothing. He is not required to wash up, clear up, lift up furniture or top up the drinks. He occupies the most comfortable chair in the room (gener­ ally in the corner). Periodically he is asked by various family members if he ‘wants anything.’

He is allowed to doze off without being labelled a party pooper and is

subsequently not particularly worried that his chair is a little out of the way ­ just as long as he is close enough to occasionally interject the conversation with an ‘I remember when’ recollec­ tion of his own. These narratives are usually delivered to reassure the room (and himself) that he hasn’t actually ruined the whole Christmas celebra­ tions by selfishly deciding to slip away and meet his maker ­ thereby actually becoming an ‘I remember when’ sub­ ject for a whole host of future family Christmas gatherings!

It’s been a blast to be with my amazing family in Dublin this year.

Thanks for making yer ol’ Dad proud and happy once again.

‘Social justice’ is the current buzz­ word. In other words, it’s nothing but teenagers virtue­signalling their identity politics credentials (about race, gender, trans rights etc) to each other. Maybe we could simplify it further by saying that ‘wokeness’ means you’ve voluntarily placed a chip on your shoulder...

Next, transgender changing rooms in M&S stores. Why has M&S spent more effort on facilitating men’s desires rather than answer­ ing women’s needs? What is a woman shopping with kids, too young to be left unsupervised, sup­

NO SAFE HAVEN DEAR Euro Weekly and readers, Happy New Year! I read this paper every week to keep myself up­to­date and it se­ ems that we have seen a lot of violence in 2019 in Spain. It’s truly a shame as I consi­ dered the Mediterranean coast somewhat of a safe haven. It seems this could soon be no more. I truly don’t understand what we are coming to but would like to leave a message here. I know a lot of good people who help and really contribute to society in a positive way. If you are one of these peo­ ple, please keep doing what you do. You may not feel like it, but the world apprecia­ tes you and your work. Who we are and what we do may feel insignificant at times, but it all adds up to something very special.

Unrealistic choices A S 2 0 2 0 b e g i n s , p e o p l e e m b a r k o n t h e i r Ne w Year’s resolutions. The moment has finally arrived to face the objectives that keep being put off till January 1. But research proves that the outlook is bleak.

About half of all adults make a New Year’s resolution. However, less than 25 per cent of people stay committed to their goals for longer than 30 days and only 8 per cent of people accomplish them. The most common resolutions come in the form of lifestyle changes like losing weight and saving money.

The main reason that people don’t achieve their objectives is because they are generally unrealistic. Expectations about the speed and ease of completing resolutions also contributes to people falling victim to the false hope syndrome, leaving them disappointed.

Ancient Babylonians are considered to be the first civilization to make New Year’s resolutions, around 4,000 years ago. Celebrations were held in mid-March, when the year began with the planting of the crops. During a religious festival known as Akitu, Babylonians promised to pay their debts and return borrowed objects. If they didn’t keep their word, they would fall out of favour with the gods.

Despite these religious roots, resolutions today are focused on self-improvement. And although the rate of accomplishment is dismal, it doesn’t stop the tradition from continuing. After all, we’ve had thousands of years of practice.

Fly safe THE worst and most unwel­ come souvenir to bring back home is a cold or a flu. And one of the most common places to catch a chill is on an aeroplane. Planes put a big group of people in close prox­ imity, creating a breeding ground for bacterium and viruses.

However, getting a flight doesn’t mean an assured bout of illness. There are certain tips that can help reduce the chances of catching other trav­ ellers’ ailments.

Viruses spread on planes be­ cause of the low humidity and air conditioning. Sitting by a window reduces contact with people in the aisle. Passengers should also adjust their air conditioning in the vents above the seat to blow germs away.

It may seem pointless, but wiping down the seat before sitting down can also minimise the chances of illness. Disinfec­ tant wet wipes or spray will do the job quickly and effectively and cleaning should be focused on the tray, armrests and seat­ belt.

Plenty of water to keep hy­ drated will also contribute to keeping in top shape. Finally, the golden rule that everyone should try to follow is to not sit near the toilets, as they are the busiest part of the cabin with the biggest germ concentration.

Dr Craig Ranson from the English Institute of Sport, spoke about these measures which apply both to travelling athletes as well as the general public. He indicated that the illness prevention campaign has proved effective so far,

with 40 per cent less illnesses among their ranks.

The most common illnesses which spread among people sitting in close quarters include colds, chest infections and bugs like the norovirus. They are spread through condensa­ tion in people’s breath, which is expelled when they talk or cough. These harmful microor­ ganisms can survive on hands or on hard surfaces and poten­ tially infect healthy individuals.

A study conducted in Canada compared illness transmission rates between people on flights and average com­ muters. The investigation led researchers to find that trans­ mission was 23 times more likely on a plane than on public transport, being the lack of fresh air one of the main cul­ prits.

The secrets of sleep WE spend almost a third of our life sleeping. In mam­ mals the need for sleep is so intense that natural selec­ tion has found a way to al­

ways guarantee it. An exam­ ple of this can be observed in dolphins, whose two cerebral hemispheres take turns to sleep during long

oceanic journeys.

The question soon arises, why is sleep so important?

We tend to think that when we sleep, our body and mind

shut down. But this could not be further from the truth as sleep is a very active peri­ od during which a lot of pro­ cessing and restoration oc­

curs. Neurons synthesise proteins and the rest of our cells also perform a similar process to renew themselves ready for the next bout of activity.

Every day, our brain takes in an astonishing amount of information, but rather than being directly recorded, it needs to be processed and stored. Overnight, new knowledge and experiences suffer a transformation process called ‘consolida­ tion.’ Every time we remem­ ber something, we reactivate its memory and make it more stable, a similar process to when we go over the lines of a pencil drawing to pronounce it more. This reactivation occurs uncon­ sciously during the day, but stronger, long­term memory is formed during sleep.

Other times, as if by mag­ ic, a skill we have learnt seems to improve without practising. Researchers have successfully demonstrated

that a period of sleep after practising a skill will increase speed of execution of a task and reduce the number of errors.

And finally, is sleep the key to intuition and creativity?

Intuition involves the sponta­ neous and seemingly illogical problem resolution, while creativity is symbolised by novelty and the unusual.

These two concepts have a lot in common, as they are characterised by their use of ‘hidden knowledge’ and tend to happen unconsciously.

Dreams are a big promoter of these abilities that seem to happen as if by magic.

However, they are based on the reprocessing of previous information that is already stored in the brain. While we sleep, this information is combined and gives way to the extraction of regularities, deductions and patterns.

When we wake, we have generated what we deem to be a spontaneous discovery.

Whose house should we be at? What custody arrange­ ments are made that cannot be broken? The emotions for all concerned in divorced families are exhausting and huge. Having elderly relatives to visit can cause friction, however helpful they are.

Families today can extend themselves at a dizzy speed.

One family I know rents a massive house each year so the 30 or so members can enjoy a super­size family fes­ tival.

For many single people, Christmas can be a very lone­ ly day indeed. Often being on your own entirely is best so you can just get through the day. Loneliness can be a friend.

Then there are those spe­ cial people who go out of their way with their big beau­ tiful hearts and make a dif­ ference to total strangers.

CHRISTMAS DAY: Can be a challenge for some people.

One friend of mine used to cook two turkeys. She would then make plastic plates of Christ­ mas dinners and drive around London looking for homeless people to give a meal to.

When she came home the family turkey would be ready for the family meal. She has the most beautiful heart you could imagine.

People like her make a dif­ ference on Christmas Day. I read today of a Facebook friend who since her be­ reavement now works Christ­ mas on a voluntary basis at an old people’s home. For

her, giving her time and ener­ gy is the best cause she could think of for Christmas.

The table I was invited to this year, was abundant and dressed with an antique lace

table cloth. Fine wines flowed and the food was a delight for the lovely couple who invited me to join them.

Yet many singletons were not as lucky as I. Yes, I am blessed. I know this.

So, for Christmas 2020 I am going to change my ways a little, and start looking at something I could perhaps do on Christmas Day 2020 that might help others in some way. Working with old folk is perhaps not my thing, but I have a year to look around.

So, of course, do you if you feel this way.

WOMEN IN PROPERTY T H E real estate sector is a wide industry in which many professions come into play. Traditionally, it has been characterised by the strong professional role of men.

However, new statistics are beginning to reflect change. Women are increasing their presence in the trade and continue gaining ground as they revolutionise the market with their new vision and innovative proposals.

Despite this, women are still far from holding significant positions of leadership within the business. Carmen

Panadero, founder of Women in Real Estate, spoke to Spanish newspaper ABC about women in property. She assured that she strongly believes that the presence of women in real estate will continue growing steadily.

According to a recent study published

by F I A B C I, women close 45 per cent of real estate operations in Spain. This represents a 60 per cent increase in the last five years. In 2013, the figure stood at a measly 28 per cent. On the other hand, only 9 per cent of management positions in property are held by women.

Currently, women occupy 84,000 jobs out of the total 157,000 jobs in the sector. Another challenge for women is the pay gap, although in property it tends to have less impact. E stimates place the salary difference at 11.5 per cent.

D istribution of professionals is also changing and not only for women who work in real estate agencies or consultants, but also in construction companies. Panadero explained that the construction field is where the lack of women is most notable. She explained that new programmes including a R eal

Renters and repairs WHEN it comes to renting, a lot of confusion can arise between landlords and ten­ ants when something is bro­ ken or damaged. This topic is widely discussed and gen­ erally boils down to an easy answer: the landlord must pay for all reparations that are necessary to keep the house in a decent condition.

However, what is consid­ ered decent or not can also come into question. Some tenants or property owners might consider certain im­ provement works or updates to be necessary, which can often be the source of con­ flict. The difference is that these improvements are not strictly essential to guaran­ tee the habitability of the house, more so they are car­ ried out to enhance the resi­ dence.

According to article 22.1 on rental leases, the landlord is entitled to do home im­ provements, even if there is a tenant living in the resi­ dence. Provided, of course, that the job cannot be rea­ sonably delayed until the conclusion of the lease. To go ahead, the landlord must notify the renters at least three months in advance.

In a situation like this, the law allows the tenant to re­ nounce the contract, unless the work doesn’t affect the leased housing. If you keep the contract, article 22.3 states that tenants have the

On the other hand, any im­ provements to the house al­ so give the landlord the right to raise the rent price up to 20 per cent after five years of contract.

Another frequent question is what the tenant can and cannot do. Any work that will modify the configuration of the home or the furniture, needs to have the written consent of the landlord to go ahead.

If the tenant does not re­ spect these established clauses, the landlord may terminate the contract.

Renters may also be required to return the residence to its previous state, without being able to claim any compensa­ tion for the cost.

If any of the renters are disabled or over 70, they will be able to carry out changes,

but must notify the landlord and restore the residence to its original state if needed.

Estate Degree in the Polytechnic University of Madrid will facilitate the access of young women to the construction sector.

Construction companies believe that the implementation of technology on site will help match the percentages of men and women, since it will attract a skilled workforce separate to construction work. This sector currently has the lowest presence of women. According to the latest survey, there are 118,200 women working in this branch, a 9.3 per cent of the of total employees.

SUPPORTING AND PROMOTING TRADITIONAL AND ARTISAN BUSINESSES IN ANDALUCIA CONSULAR MATTERS I HAVE been watching the tele­ vision series ‘The Crown’ a lot recently, and it started me thinking about how many busi­ nesses and events I am invited to as a lawyer with the firm Just Law Spanish Solicitors and as the Danish Consul for Andalucia and Extremadura.

It is always very interesting to visit businesses in my capacity as trade delegate, and explore new possibilities of how to help Spanish businesses establish re­ lations with foreign businesses, and in particular Danish compa­ nies.

firsthand pâté production and then an open an art exhibition, two very diverse organisations, but nevertheless informative.

Following this, last week I was invited to a beer tasting event at the San Miguel brewery in Mala­ ga, you might have seen this brewery when landing at Malaga airport; and I am also very well informed on just how popular San Miguel beer is in the United Kingdom!

I have to say that San Miguel have surpassed themselves in their visitor experience.

They have a dedicated tasting room with a beer Sommelier.

The tasting room is lit with an overhead digital projector which displays images appropriate to each one of the beers that are being tried, including ambient music relevant to the beer in question. But it does not end there, the projector also lights

up the tables.

The Sommelier explained the complex process involved in cre­ ating each beer and described the taste and how it is brought to blend and perform in the most exquisite way in all our senses.

A first for me was that each beer was served in a special glass with a particular tapa de­ signed to bring out the best taste in the beer.

And to finish the visit, we went on to the in­house bar. At this point, readers will be proud to know that this brave taster then actually managed to get herself home in one piece!

Merrymaking aside, I certainly believe it so important that busi­ nesses in Malaga are continually supported as much as possible; and here’s to hoping that the San Miguel brewery continues to do what it does best in Malaga.

THE new Audi RS 7 Sportback is on sale now priced from £97,050. It joins the RS 6 Avant in the brand’s range of powerful executive vehi­ cles, featuring a new wider body and a 4.0­litre twin­turbo V8 petrol engine with a mild­hybrid system.

Like the previous RS 7, the new car takes the basic five­door A7 Sportback and adds some extra muscle in both its styling and power courtesy of the brand’s high­perfor­ mance and racing division, Audi Sport.

Buyers can choose from four trim­levels, including a base­model and three further specifications, Carbon Black, Vorsprung and Launch Edition. Both the Carbon Black and Vorsprung models receive black exterior trim. The former specification gets a set of black 22­ inch alloys, while the flagship Vorsprung model features 22­ inch matte titanium alloys, a panoramic glass sunroof and a standard­fit sports exhaust sys­ tem, finished with trademark oval exhaust tips.

Suzuki Swift Sport ROAD TEST

by Nick Fletcher HOT hatchbacks have endur­ ing popularity and one of the strong contenders in the sec­ tor is the Suzuki Swift Sport which has charismatic styling and packs quite a perfor­ mance punch.

Powered by a very respon­ sive 138 hp 1.4­litre turbo­ petrol engine, the Swift Sport delivers a zesty 0­100 kph time of 8.1 seconds and has outstanding handling charac­ teristics to keep it firmly planted on the corners. Top speed is 209 kph (130 mph), emissions 125 g/km and aver­ age fuel economy 16.6 kpl (47.1 mpg).

Priced at €22,359 (£18,999), the Swift Sport has a performance­style cabin with bolstered front seats and the dashboard dominated by twin hooded speedometer and rev­counter dials. There is also a neat display unit be­ tween them providing addi­ tional information including lateral acceleration and brak­ ing force!

The frontal styling gives the car a potent stance and twin exhausts emphasise the per­ formance aspect so the Swift Sport can turn a few heads.

It is well equipped too ­ standard features include al­ loy wheels, LED headlights, rear parking camera, cruise control, digital radio, Blue­ tooth, sat­nav, climate control and smartphone links. Safety kit includes auto emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane­keep assist and driver alert.

The Swift has a larger interi­ or thanks to a wider platform and slightly lowered seats boosting headroom, and a longer wheelbase which cre­ ates more rear passenger space. Seating is comfortable and supportive and there is a good driving position with ex­ cellent visibility. Boot space of 265 litres is slightly smaller than that of some rivals, but is expandable to 579 litres by dropping the rear seats.

CHELSEA produced a stun­ ning late comeback to beat Arsenal 2­1 in the Premier League on Sunday, consign­ ing Mikel Arteta to defeat on his home debut as coach of the north London side.

Pierre­Emerick Aubameyang gave the hosts the lead in the 13th minute but Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno’s howler handed Jorginho an equaliser on a plate after 83 minutes.
