DAZZLING: Three giant illuminated Three King’s crowns form the centrepiece of Almeria’s Christmas street decorations.

ALMERIA is shining bright for the Festive Season celebrations with Christmas eco-friendly lights up all over the province.

Three giant Three King’s crowns featuring 155,000 LED lights form the dazzling centrepiece of the decorative illuminations in Almeria City’s Mirador de la Rambla.

The council put on quite a show for the big switchon at the beginning of the bank holiday weekend.

Thousands turned out to enjoy live performances of 50’s-style swing and dance before the countdown to the big moment, fireworks adding to the spectacle.

Other standout city Christmas illuminations include a giant sled in the P l a z a d e l a s Ve l a s a n d a

17-metre high artificial tree in the Puerta de Purchena.

There is also a synthetic ecological ice-rink in the Cathedral square and a giant nativity scene complete with artificial snow at the entrance to the city guitar museum.

Last week Almeria mayor Ramon FernandezPacheco unveiled a programme of Christmas

activities up until the January 6 Three Kings bank holiday.

He said the council wanted this year’s Festive Season in the city to be remembered for being “inclusive and happy, in which all children can take part and in which we adults can be more responsible,” referring to the administration’s aim of encouraging environmentally friendly celebrations.

SCIENCE and industry are at the centre of a Costa de Almeria tourism push.

Representatives from the provincial tourist board, the business community and administrations attended a recent informative breakfast event in Almeria City to focus on how the scientific and industrial sectors can attract more visitors to the province.

ences.”

There was, the Diputacion head promised, “going to be a revolution in scientific and industrial tourism in Almeria.”

Specific attractions the provin-

cial administration has in mind include the Macael marble quarries, the Calar Alto observatory, the Bedar and Rodalquilar mines, Pulpi’s giant geode and the cinema industry.

“We have to offer tourists something different which means unique experiences,” Garcia affirmed.

Scientific and industrial sector attractions can help break the seasonal nature of tourism in Almeria, generating wealth, creating jobs and helping to prevent an exodus from rural areas, he added.

SEIZED: Raids netted drugs, weapons and cash.

ALMERIA police have dismantled a cocaine sales point and two hidden marihuana plantations.

Officers raided properties in the La Chanca district of Almeria City following a six-month investigation.

It became clear there was a very active drug sales operation in the neighbourhood.

There were constant comings and goings of people from outside the area, who would be in and out

the property from where the drugs were sold within minutes then hasten off.

Police also established there were two indoor marihuana plantations in the same area.

Police carried out raids on four properties simultaneously. In the one functioning as a drug sales point they found five grammes of cocaine and 22 grammes of hashish prepared for sale, three sets of precision scales and €1,993 in cash.

In two others they came

across 319 marihuana plants.

The f i nal r ai d on t he home of the individual believed responsible for running the drug sales operation resulted in the seizure of a gun and ammunition.

Police said the suspect tried to get rid of the gun by tossing it out a window onto a rooftop terrace.

Police made three arrests in all. The detainees face charges of a crime against public health, defrauding the power supply and illegal gun ownership.

THE number of people out of work in Almeria fell by 1,142, or 2 per cent, to 56,216 in November. Over the last 12 months the provincial unemployment total has dropped by 1,593 people, or a 2.76 per cent decrease since November 2018.

THE Guardia Civil has opened an investigation after farm workers came across the body of a man in his 40’s on a country lane in an area of greenhouses near to Santa Maria del Aguila in El Ejido. Press reported no ID was found on the corpse.

Olentzero is a popular character in northern Spain who, according to Christmas traditions, visits towns and villages late at night on December 24 to leave presents for the children.

LEGEND has it that Olentzero was abandoned as a new born in the woods, where he was rescued by a fairy who bestowed on him the gifts of strength and kindness.

With the fairy’s help, he turned into a strong man who lived in the mountains and worked as a c h a r c o a l b u r n e r. H e w a s a k i n d man, who carved wooden toys for the village children, which he

would take down to them in a coal sack. It is believed that he died as he was saving children from a burning house. But, upon seeing this, the fairy granted him eternal life so he could continue bringing joy.

Darker versions of the tradition depict Olentzero as a drunkard who lives hidden away in the forest and who only comes out dur-

ing Christmas to leave presents.

In many villages, parents would warn their children that Olentzero would climb down the chimney and cut their throats with a sickle if they didn’t go to bed.

In northern towns in Navarra a n d t h e B a s q u e C o u n t r y, p e o p l e dress up as Olentzero and make intricate floats that participate in festive parades on November 24.

Attempted homicide

Fugitive found

TWO men are under arrest for attempted homicide following a brutal attack outside an Aguadulce nightspot which put the victim in intensive care.

Two aggressors knocked the victim to the ground and repeatedly kicked him, even after he became unconscious, in the early hours of December 1. A call out to the 062 emergency number alerted the Guardia. When a patrol arrived they found the attack victim with serious injuries. He was rushed to the intensive care unit at the Torrecardenas hospital.

An intensive investigation, including numerous witness interviews and information gathering from technology, allowed the Guardia to establish step-by-step what led up to the assault, the details of the attack and to identify the suspects.

They detained 35-year-old FACS and 37-year-old JFCP three days after the aggression.

The pair are being held in prison on remand.

POLICE arrested a criminal who had been on the run from Romanian justice for years in San Isidro in Nijar.

Identified as 41-year-old MT, he is wanted in Romania to serve a 10-year prison sentence for robbery.

He is accused, along with two accomplices, of breaking into a business in December 2014, tying up the owner and getting away with €400 and a mobile phone, and causing more than €600 damage.

He is also believed responsible for a hit on another business, this time stealing €300.

A European arrest warrant was issued for the 41-year-old in November 2015.

Interpol España informed the Almeria National Police that they had reason to believe the fugitive was hiding out in Nijar. An exhaustive search led eventually to the location of the suspect in San Isidro and his subsequent detention.

FALSE PROMISES: The crooks told the family they would get them work, a home, a car and a place in a private school for their small daughter. make payments via international money transfer platforms for the amounts and to the individuals indicated, which they duly did.

PRAISE: Mayor Rosmari Cano highlighted the important work the Red Cross has been carrying out in Mojacar for many years.

So convinced was the family they sold all their possessions in Brazil to raise enough cash.

Adding credibility to the

con, two of the fraudsters went to Brazil to accompany the family on the flight to Spain. They also provided them with false documents to

support the school enrolment for their daughter, the property rental, car purchase, and so on.

But when they got to Vera, the final destination, there was no house, vehicle or school, and the Brazilians realised they had been had.

Painstaking investigations and the recovery of the falsified papers led to the identification of the five suspects now under arrest. A sixth is under investigation.

The Guardia identified the detainees as 28, 25 and 18year-olds from Vera, a 36year-old from Molina de Segura in Murcia and a 34-yearold from Aguilas. They are charged with fraud, document falsification and intellectual property crimes.

Helping hand for needy THE Mojacar Red Cross has opened a new clothes and essential goods centre for the needy.

Local mayor Rosmari Cano joined the association’s local president Concepcion Rivero Puche, and Red Cross volunteers to inaugurate the facility in the Red Cross building on Mojacar Playa seafront.

Also invited to the event were a group of Mojacar’s senior citizens for whom the Mojacar Red Cross organises workshops and activities.

The centre had been stocked

with new garments donated by large clothing companies and delivered from the Red Cross headquarters, taking into account the needs of local people who receive assistance from the Red Cross on the basis of social assistance reports.

The facility, which will be managed by six volunteers in rotation, also has household items and helpful daily necessities.

The mayor highlighted the important work the Red Cross has been carrying out in the area for many years for all sec-

tors of society in need of help and support.

With 18 volunteers working across Mojacar, Turre, Los Gallardos and Carboneras, this year the association has focused on the elderly, a sector of society seen as especially vulnerable, and has encouraged all nationalities to join their workshops, courses, theatre and cooking groups.

The Mojacar branch president stressed the importance of collaborating with this unique humanitarian, internationally recognised institution.

Bolting carriage casualty A CARRIAGE driver at one of the Tabernas cinema locations was injured after one of the horses bolted.

Guardia Civil officers were first on the scene.

They found the accident victim laid out with symptoms of severe pain and in a state of great anxiety.

Officers did what they could to calm down the victim, who told them they had been taking three customers on a ride when one of the reins attaching the horses to the carriage came loose and one made off.

In a desperate attempt to retain control, the carriage driver jumped onto one of the animals, but fell on the ground and the carriage wheels went over their legs.

A BUNCH of fraudsters who managed to con a Brazillian family out of â‚Ź15,000 on a false promise of arranging a new life for them on the Costa Almeria are under arrest.

Guardia Civil said the five convinced the family they could get them Spanish residency and work in Vera in return for paying them large amounts of money. The con artists also promised them a rented property, a car and getting their four-year-old daughter into a private school.

The Guardia found out about the con when the family reported the crooks. They said the Spaniards had told them they would have to

Storms prompt calls for better beach defences THE storms which hit the Costa Almeria last week saw exceptionally rough seas pound Vera Playa, prompting renewed calls for better beach defences.

The waves come right up to the back of the beaches, leaving the sand in a sorry looking state.

Vera Playa resident Stephen Brooks-Brown pointed out this was by no means the first time high seas have hammered Vera’s coastline, damaging infrastructure and facilities situated on municipal beaches.

Stephen told the Euro Weekly News he believes more should be done to better protect this stretch of coast from the impact of stormy weather.

“All they seem to do every time in preparation for winter is just move sand down from the Puer-

to Rey end to down near the naturist hotel and widen the beach out, which doesn’t really do anything,” Stephen commented.

“Our concern is there won’t be much of a beach left if it continues like this every year.”

A businessman operating in the naturist zone shares Stephen’s worries. Natsun manager Jan Stuyvesant told EWN he sees a good long-term defence for the whole of Vera beach as a large groin extending out from Garrucha port, his opinion based on a study he commissioned a maritime engineer to carry out.

Responsibility for the beaches lies with the Environment Ministry. Jan explained that back in 2003 the ministry’s coasts department came up with a project grandly titled the Environmental Recovery of the Beaches between the Mouth of

the River Almanzora and Garrucha Port.

The project was, Jan says, partially put into action in 2007, but the wrong way round. Or as he put it, “like building a house starting with the roof, and forgetting the rest.”

He describes it in fact as “a major mistake technically speaking, which has cost more than 1,000,000 cubic metres of sand.”

The first step, Jan insists, should have been the 267-metre long groin he said was included in the original ministry project. He maintains the groin would consolidate the beach and provide release on the change of the currents, benefiting the whole of Vera Playa.

But he claims that in the way the project has been actioned it has done virtually nothing for the northern part of Vera’s coastline, and has

only extended the beach near to the naturist hotel.

“The physical proof is therefore there that it can work, but the effect of erosion this intervention has caused to the south virtually up to the mouth of the river Antas is terrible,” he commented.

The issue of the groin appears to currently be up in the air, Jan told EWN. Meanwhile, he and other local residents and business people are running out of patience, while “relatively easy solutions could produce major positive effects.”

Vera Council confirmed to EWN that beach defences are an important issue for the administration, but the matter is down to the Environment Ministry.

PRECAUTION: The Guardia Civil cut off motorway traffic in both directions due to the risk of leaks.

Lorry turnover blocks motorway THE A-7 motorway was cut off to traffic in both directions for some 20 hours in Nijar after a lorry carrying 27,000 litres of liquid natural gas overturned at midday last Wednesday.

There were no reports of leaks or spillages from the lorry, but the Guardia Civil blocked off traffic as a precautionary measure between kilometre points 487 and 481 while the emergency services cordoned off a 600-metre perimeter around the accident sight.

The DGT Directorate General of Traffic informed drivers heading for Almeria City to come off the A7 at kilome-

tre mark 471 for the AL-3111 connection, while in the other direction there was a diversion via Campohermoso.

Nijar Council activated its Municipal Emergency Plan, and the Junta de Andalucia government delegate in Almeria Maria Isabel Sanchez declared the situation 0 Emergencies Plan for Accident Risk in the transport of Dangerous Merchandise by Road or Rail.

This refers to accidents which can be controlled by the available local services. It covers notifications, alerts and mobilisation, as well as monitoring the evolution of the situation. At the same time the services keep a central co-

ordinator informed at all times of any changes in the level of emergency and the need to take additional measures.

After an operation lasting all afternoon and night the Almeria fire service managed to safely remove the lorry with the help of two large cranes early on Thursday morning. They had had to empty out about 10,000 litres of the liquid from the cistern to be able to stand the lorry up on its wheels.

The motorway was finally reopened just before 9.30am.

The lorry driver suffered injuries in the accident and was transferred to the Torrecardenas hospital.

Energy efficient lighting cash MOJACAR Council has approved a local authority-financed credit supplement of €237,383 to go towards the installation of energy efficient lighting in the municipality.

The council said it was in a position to add to the European Regional Development Fund grant for investments in a low carbon economy given the remaining liquid assets.

The council stressed the move falls within the regulatory legal framework for local administrations and is supported by a favourable report from the council Secretariat and Treasury.

Mojacar has received a €949,525 subsidy for improving the efficiency of pub-

lic lighting and reducing light pollution.

However the total cost for replacing all the lighting on a total of 1,213 light points, the replacement of 447 posts in poor condition, anti-corrosion treatment on another 300 posts and the implementation of new power surge protection and control systems amounts to €1,186,910.

Hence the council has proposed contributing to the shortfall to finish the job, which the local authority maintains will mean an annual saving of more than €70,000, plus an estimated reduction in maintenance costs of some €49,000 and an energy saving of more than 60 per cent a year.

COLLABORATION: Citizen participation in efforts to care for our surroundings is key, commented Almeria City Sustainable Environment councillor Margarita Cobos.

Coastline clean-up SOME 600 volunteers turned out for a clean-up of a stretch of coastline between the river Andarax and Retamar.

Organised by different environmental organisations, the collective effort to clear rubbish from 15,000sqm of coast had the backing of Almeria City Council, which provided materials to help the volunteers gather the waste materials.

The council’s Sustainable Environment councillor Margarita Cobos was among those taking part. She commented on how many people got involved, noting that Almeria residents are increasingly more conscious of the importance of looking after the environment.

Cobos underlined the importance of

“collaboration and citizen participation” in the common goal of “caring for our surroundings and adding to efforts to defend our planet.

“We have a society which is aware and which responds when the call goes out, and today is an example of this, with the participation of many young people and families.”

The councillor said the city authority is committed to improving the environment and to raising awareness among local residents through campaigns.

She referred specially to the administration’s new ‘Eradicate this species: recycle plastic’ campaign, appealing for the “rational use and recycling of plastic, one of the residues with has the most consequences in the degradation

of the environment, and especially on seas and oceans.”

Costacabana residents’ association vice-president Jose Reche echoed the councillor’s comments, remarking that the day “demonstrates society’s commitment to an issue which worries and concerns us all.”

Ecologists in Action, one of the associations which organised the initiative, said as well as managing to clear a large area of coast of trash the clean-up made people more aware of the ‘mistreatment’ of the planet.

“The solution is in us and we have to think about how to reduce the large amount of waste which is generated and which affects the environment,” Ecologists in Action stressed.

VARIED: Unemployed were taken on for jobs including cleaning staff, plumbers, painters and decorators, geriatric care assistants and electricians.

SOME 50 out-of-work people in Cuevas del Almanzora have this year benefited from employment plans.

The plans are backed by the Junta de Andalucia through the European Social Fund, with the collaboration of the local council, and last week Cuevas mayor Antonio Fernandez Liria and Economic Development councillor Maria Isabel Alarcon presented diplomas to 26 of the unemployed who worked for the local authority.

The plans allowed for contracting people not in employment for various jobs for a minimum of six months with a total invest-

ment of €414,500.

This year there were 18 jobless aged 18 to 29 who were taken on to work in tourism IT, as street cleaners, cleaning staff, plumbers, painters and decorators, geriatric care assistants and electricians.

In the programme for 30 to 44-year-olds, there were 12 peopl e em pl oyed as electricians, plumbers, cleaners, street cleaners or rural tourism agents.

In the over 45 age group, 18 unem pl oyed wer e contracted as painters and decorators, carpenters, cleaning staff, plumbers, street cleaners and IT staff.

Feral cat control MOJACAR Council says it has allocated funds for the control of the municipal feral cat population in next year’s budget.

The mayor Rosa Maria Cano reported the plan at the last local authority plenary meeting in response to the motion presented by the opposition Socialist Group to establish a municipal TrapNeuter-Return system for local cat colonies with a council contribution to help pay veterinary bills and other costs.

Mugger held GUARDIA CIVIL have arrested a suspected serial thief targeting elderly women in the Nijar area.

The Guardia said they have connected the 22-year-old to up to 17 crimes, including violent muggings.

The mugger picked on women of an advanced age, keeping an eye on them until they were on their own, then grabbing their handbags. In one attack the victim suffered injuries requiring an operation.

According to the Guardia, after carrying out a series of attacks the suspect shaved his head and left the area to try and avoid police detection. However, he went back to commit more crimes, this time stealing from vehicles.

In one of the thefts he took a bank book which he used a number of times to take money out of a cashpoint in Sorbas.

Thanks to technology, investigators were able to establish the individual withdrawing the cash with the bank book was the same person as the mugger. They caught up with the suspect at the end of November, also charging him with breaking and entering.

STEPPING OUT

FOR the third consecutive year Vera residents stepped out to show their support for full equality for the intellectually disabled.

Some 400 people took part in a march organised by the Asprodalba association for the intellectually disabled in collaboration with the local council’s Social Affairs department.

Setting out from the Plaza, the crowd sporting distinctive green ‘Todos Somos Todos’ campaign t-shirts made their way through the town’s main streets to the El Palmeral fair ground where students at the Asprodalba centre read out a manifesto calling for full inclusion.

“We are all equal, we all have the same rights and we deserve equality of treatment and opportunities,” they told the participants.

This year’s manifesto put particular emphasis on the issue of loneliness.

problem for everyone,” was a central message, adding, “the lack of inclusion and discrimination against people with a disability increases our enforced loneliness.”

cide with the International Day for Persons with Disabilities on Tuesday December 3. The initiative also features traditional games, sport, live music, dance classes and a giant paella.

Twenty years of News in Spain for British expats

In recognition of the fact Euro Weekly News is the best free expat newspaper in Spain, we were exclusively selected by the Spanish press for an insight into the publication which keeps its readers informed of issues that matter - most recently the challenges of Brexit.

RENOWNED Spanish media company EFE, interviewed Steven and Michel Euesden, owners of Euro Weekly News.

EFE looked to gain some insight into the Euesden family and their successful company.

The business owners spoke about 20 years of publishing Spanish news for expats and the new challenges that have arisen with Brexit.

Steven and Michel Euesden arrived in Spain in 1995 with a dream and a Suzuki Vitara loaded to the brim. Nowadays, they run the largest free press group for British expats in Spain and know the business like nobody else. The main office of the news group is located on the Costa del Sol, specifically on Avda Ramon y Cajal in the centre of Fuengirola.

Will I lose the right to Spanish healthcare? Will I have to change my passport? What will happen to my house on the coast? These are all questions that worry the 249,015 Britons living in Spain after the 2016 referendum.

The Euesdens, owners of Euro Weekly News, try to answer these burning ‘Brexit’ questions for their readers every week.

The communication group distributes 136,000 copies through six editions that are distributed in the southeast of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands. Steven, who is also the head of Sales, explained to EFE the immediate response to Brexit seen by Euro Weekly. “When UK’s exit from the EU was announced, emails full of questions began flooding into all of the newspaper’s offices.”

When Steven and Michel first moved to Spain, it took them almost a week to reach Mojacar in Almeria. Coming from a small town in England, they were ready to start a new life; an experience that they share with so many other Britons who have business interests in

Of all the British residents in Spain who are of working age (138,000 according to Spain’s National Institute of Statistics), 71,807 are working and affiliated to the Social Security.

From the company’s headquarters in

Fuengirola, Steven Euesden shares a sense of feeling forgotten with his fellow compatriots. He feels that expats have not had a chance to be part of the Brexit process.

In total, British expats in Spain account for almost a quarter million peo-

ple, of which 126,013 are men and 123,002 are women. Mostly, they are over 45, but there are also 17,770 children under 15 who call Spain their home.

Churches celebrate together in Mojacar MOJACAR’S Anglican and Catholic churches came together to celebrate one of the first events in the Christmas programme, the Festival of Nine Lessons.

The festival focuses on the words from Genesis, which were read in both languages, interspersed with traditional Christmas carols from both cultures and singing by the Embrujo Mojaquero Choir.

The celebration was officiated by the Santa Maria Catholic Church Priest, Miguel Jose Esteban Jerez, and the Reverend of San Pascual Anglican Church, Vincent Oram.

As every year, many of the Catholic and Anglican faithful from Mojacar’s many different nationalities came along together to celebrate these advent dates as a prelude to some of the most important religious days of the year.

Members of the local authority were among those attending, including the mayor Rosa Maria Cano and councillors Maria Luisa Perez, Ana Garcia, Raquel Bel-

monte, Agustin Montoya and Francisco Garcia Cerda.

To add to the evening event, the traditional ‘belen,’ or church nativity scene had been put together by Mojacar’s parishioners. It features the work of renowned Murcian miniature model craftsmen Jesus Griñan.

Although the central figures of the nativity scene have been in the church for some years, new depictions of Jesus’s life have been acquired over time from the same sculptor, meaning it has evolved into a display of great artistic and cultural value.

The Anglican tradition of holding the Nine Lessons Festival during the advent season dates back to 1880, when the Archbishop of Canterbury designed the service for Christmas Eve in Cornwall.

The readings begin with the Old Testament and end with the Gospel of Luke, following the story of man’s fall and the promise of a new covenant with the birth of Jesus Christ.

Students from the Alyanub school joined significantly older Vera residents from the San Cleofas centre to take part in the ‘Mirando Atras’ (looking back) intergenerational project, which is promoted by Vera Council’s Education and Senior Citizens’ departments in collaboration with the Almeria provincial govern-

ment.

The initiative is all about developing intergenerational communication through works of theatre aimed at education centres and infants’ schools.

Food fair record visitors THE ‘Sabores Almeria’ food fair in Almeria City ended with record visitor numbers and sales success, the provincial government reported.

Staged over the bank holiday weekend in the provincial capital’s central Paseo de Almeria, this, the sixth edition of the event, attracted some 70,000 tourists and residents, according to the Diputacion’s calculations.

Many of the fairgoers went home with purchases from one of the 35 participating business’s stands.

“The companies are very happy with the great sales figures and because they are making their products known directly to consumers and to the tourists visiting over this bridging holiday,” commented provincial government Agrofood Promotion deputy Antonio J Rodriguez.

“This will mean the flavours of the province are known both inside and beyond our borders,” he added.

Tackling gender violence ADRA Council has requested a €180,000 subsidy from the Andalucia Institute of the Woman to help tackle gender-based violence and advance policies of equality.

The institute funding is available for projects aimed at gender violence prevention and intervention as part of its efforts focused on battling the problem, promoting assistance to victims and raising awareness on the issue.

The local authority said its financing request reflected the administration’s commitment to making resources available to gender violence victims and to making people more aware of this ‘blight’ on society.

Specifically, the council has asked for €160,000 for programmes and measures for the coordination of victim assistance and a further €20,000 for prevention and awareness-raising initiatives.

The local authority also said it aimed to act in line with the State Pact, which is made up of 292 measures in all and 10 lines of action, including breaking the silence on the matter, improving institutional response, coordination, and better assistance and protection for victims. Also highlighted is increased assistance to and protection of children affected by gender violence.

The council further stressed equality between men and women is a basic, fundamental right recognised in the Spanish constitution.

“The protection of victims requires a multi-disciplinary and integral approach, and Adra Council does not want to be disconnected from this fight,” the council said.

The perfect Nordic Christmas EVERYONE dreams of a beautiful picture-postcard, white Christmas. For most Scandanavians, this is a reality and as a nation, they totally embrace everything festive.

After a long, dark and gloomy winter, with less than five hours of daylight at the height of the season, Christmas marks a joyful transition in the Nordic region, as the darkness is slowly replaced by light.

Christmas in the Nordics is still referred to by its pagan name: Jul in Norway, Sweden and in Denmark, Jol in Iceland and Joulu in Finland.

In most of these countries, the weekslong festivities officially kick off with the celebration of St Lucia Day on December 13, in honour of a fourth century martyr from Syracuse.

Children traditionally dress up in white, wearing head wreaths and carrying candles, singing angelic hymns.

At the heart of the beautiful ceremony is the Lucia bride, a young woman adorned with a crown of candles embedded in lingonberry branches.

While it derives from the Lutheran Church, the celebration coincides with the Winter Solstice of the old Julian pagan calendar and now symbolises the

In Iceland, the celebrations being even earlier, on the first Advent Sunday, with the decades-old lighting of the Oslo Christmas tree.

The seasonal focus in Denmark is on hygge which roughly describes a feeling of ‘winter cosy.’

Homes, streets and squares are dominated by decorated trees, twinkling lights, candles, ad garland - in fact anything to create a warm atmosphere.

The Nordics normally have two weeks off from work - from December 24 to January 6 (the day of the Epiphany or Day of the Three Kings.

January 6 is celebrated across the Christian world as the time when the three Magi came bearing gifts to visit baby Jesus, but in the Nordics, it marks the end of Christmas celebrations.

In almost every Nordic culture, a mythical creature begins visiting the homes of children 12 days before Christmas. Excited youngsters put slippers on a window ledge in the hope

they will be left gifts of toys, sweets or cookies.

The good-humoured but mischievious gnome - known as Nisse in Denmark, Norway and Sweden - is rumoured to have a long white beard and a pointed red knitted hat.

Meanwhile, in Iceland children await the annual arrival of the 13 Yule Lads similar to the seven dwarfs, they have their own strange but endearing traits.

However, Icelandic youngsters do not count down the days to the appearance of Gryla, a two-horned mountain

ogress with a face covered in warts who, according to folklore, seeks out and cooks naughty children.

The Nordics have many unusual festive traditions, and one Finnish example is the special Christmas Sauna joulusauna - on December 24.

A cup of porridge or another treat is brought back to the sauna as an offering for saunatonttu, the sauna elf that is believed to protect the sauna and its visitors from fire and harmful smoke.

Christmas Eve dinner is then prepared.

Depending on which part of the region they are from, families tend to serve ribbe pork belly (Norway), pork roast or roasted goose and spicy red cabbage (Denmark), Christmas ham and pickled herring in mustard and sour cream (Sweden), grouse with berries in (Iceland), and roast ham with pork feet and ear jelly (Finland).

But one thing that unites the whole Nordic region is glögg - its own version of mulled wine - which is often made with cardamom, clove and cinnamon, laced with any strong alcohol to hand.

It’s drunk through December to stave off evil spirits running amok in winter and to help fight the freezing cold temperatures.

Glass recycling record

REWARD: Ecovidrio has rewarded the city for its contribution to the fight against climate change and to protecting the coastline.

ALMERIA has been rewarded for its glass recycling record.

The city successfully met the challenge set by the Green Flags Movement, an initiative put into action by the Ecovidrio non-profit organisation which manages glass recycling across the country, substantially increasing the

amount of glass which was recycled over the holiday season.

Last week Ecovidrio regional delegate Jesus Gutierrez presented Environmental Sustainability councillor Margarita Cobos with an award in recognition of “Almeria City’s commitment to the fight against climate change and the protection of the coast through recycling

glass throughout the summer.

“I am very proud of the response of Almerians and of the 92 establishments which took part in this challenge, which we have surpassed, managing to collect in the summer months in the 598 green containers 41 per cent more than in the same period last year, Cobos commented.

Both the Ecovidrio delegate and the councillor stressed the importance of recycling in the catering trade.

“Fifty per cent of the glass which the city generates comes from catering,” Gutierrez pointed out.

According to Cobos, Almeria’s glass recycling efforts meant preventing the emission of 347 tonnes of CO2, the equivalent of removing 162 cars from the roads for a year.

She said that 2019 has been a very good year for recycling in Almeria in general. She cited Ecovidrio figures covering up to October which reveal that Almerians recycled 1,756 tonnes of glass over 10 months, 33 per cent more than in 2018.

“This shows that Almeria is advancing in recycling and taking major steps along the road,” she remarked.

The councillor said the city administration planned to continue with recycling awareness-raising campaigns “so that increasingly more Almerians think about the future of the planet which we want to leave for future generations and recycle, whether it is glass, paper, cardboard, plastic or batteries.”

Changing your UK driving licence for a Spanish one IN the event that Brexit occurs on or before January 31, then those considered residents in Spain will need to have taken action with regards to their UK driving licences.

There is something of a double edged sword in as much as if you have been living and working here for some time, you will be considered a resident even if you haven’t registered with your local council.

In order to swap your British driving licence for a Spanish one without taking a test, you have to show that you are registered officially as a resident.

Some DGT offices require that you make an appointment and others will accept people just turning up if they are not busy.

You need to check in advance to see whether you need to take a medical or not as in some cases they are being requested although in other centres they are not required.

It takes about a month for the new Spanish licence to be ready and it is then that you will have to surrender your British licence.

In theory, there is supposed to be a nine-month grace period following Brexit during which time you can continue to use a British photo licence whilst driving in Spain, but by the time that Brexit occurs, the regulation may have changed.

Equally, if you don’t want to commit at this time, it should be possible to obtain an international driving licence valid for Spain from the DVLC in the UK but as a resident, that would only be good for six months.

Failing all of this, if you don’t make the exchange before Brexit then you will eventually have to take a Spanish driving test including the written section.

Should you return to the UK for a short period of time, it is perfectly acceptable to drive with a Spanish licence or if you r e t u r n p e r m a n e n t l y, t h e n y o u can exchange for a British licence without taking another test (but a wise precaution would be to keep a copy of the surrendered UK licence).

German-born Thomas spent time living and working as an artist in Mojacar, which was his first residence in Andalucia. He now lives in Cariatriz, but has maintained his artistic ties with the municipality.

This latest exhibition at Mojacar ’s La Fuente Art Centre includes seve n l a rg e o i l p a i n t i n g s , several of which have already been on show in P a r i s a n d G e r m a n y, which express mans’ anx-

iety and restlessness.

As a contrast there is also an outstanding collection of smaller works done in Chinese ink and displayed originally on bamboo canes, which depict scenes of everyday life, busy times or relaxing in moments of peace and quiet.

Mojacar councillor Ana Garcia was at the recent opening of the show to hear directly from the artist about the processes of his work, along with a large number of admirers always keen to view his latest creations.

Thomas originally studied Fine Arts at the Academie des Beaux Arts in Ly-

on before going on to teach at the Jean Bertholle Academy of Fine Arts in Paris, where he lived until 1996.

From 1990 he exhibited on a regular basis in galleries across France, Spain, Germany and Argentina. A number of his works are on permanent show at the Galerie Andreas Henn in Stuttgart and in the Galerie Peinture Fraîche in Paris, as well as in public collections in Baden Württemberg and in Andalucia.

There is free entry to the Mojacar exhibiton, which is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 1pm until December 15.

No child goes without THE Red Cross and the Almeria provincial government have joined forces to ensure no child goes without toys this Christmas.

Diputacion de Almeria Social Well-being, Equality and Family deputy Angeles Martinez and Red Cross youth co-ordinator Javier Alastrue unveiled the ‘¿Nos ayudas a hacerlo realidad?’ (Will you help us to make it a reality?’) campaign on Monday, which aims to collect from around the province new, nonviolent, non-sexist and education toys which will be distributed to socially disadvantaged children.

The aim of the project is to develop the educational importance of play in terms of its role in values including tolerance, diversity and respect.

Javier Alastrue explained the reason for asking for donations of new toys was so that children receiving the donations did not stand out from other children.

Angeles Martinez invited all provincial residents to do their bit, commenting, “Play is essential in children’s development, and not all of them have access to toys at this time of year. Hence we encourage all Almerians to make a donation in the different boxes distributed around the capital and the province.”

There are collection boxes at the Diputation’s Provincial Palace, in branches of the Banco Santander and La Caixa and at Red Cross bases throughout Almeria until Wednesday December 18.

A special homage ORIHUELA honoured the Guardia Civil on a very significant year for the force, as officers celebrate 175 years of service. An impressive commemorative act was prepared with more than 100 officers taking part to mark the 175th anniversary of the Guardia Civil.

At the Principe of Asturias roundabout, an impressive monument was inaugurated in their honour. The act was chaired by the Lieutenant General and Chief of Operations, Fernando Santafé Soler, who announced the Guardia Civil would redouble their efforts in the fight against crime to ensure citizens’ safety and security. Also present was Brigadier General in charge of Valencia, José Hermida and the mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana.

During the event, the admirable bravery of the Guardia Civil during the September floods was also highlighted and the mayor expressed Orihuela’s appreciation for the Guardia Civil.

THE Cardiovascular Surgery service of the Regional University Hospital of Malaga, belonging to the Heart Unit, has obtained a certificate of excellence for its practice of implantation of pacemakers granted by the Spanish Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.

Each year, more than 250 cardio-stimulation devices are implanted in this centre and this year they celebrated a total of 10,000 pacemakers implanted since 1975.

The head of the Cardiovascular Surgery Department, Fernando Calleja, has stated that this distinction means “recognising the maximum level of capacity both to implant pacemakers and to address the problems that may arise from implants.” And added, “Only the teams formed by cardio-surgeons have the capacity and infrastructure necessary to solve the most serious problems that can occur after an implant.”

Success of PAWSPATAS fundraising THE PAWS-PATAS animal charity annual Christmas Fayre was a resounding success.

The event venue, the Plaza Estrella del Cantal in Mojacar, was packed all morning.

There was an amazing array of items on sale, including hand-made jewellery, ornaments, garments, cards and toys, as well as a raffle offering great prizes. Music was provided by the Sue Moretta Choir, who performed a selection of contemporary and Christmas songs.

Monies raised from the donated entry fee, raffle and stall holders totalled €2,137. From this amount, €370 raised by the cat team will go towards their neutering campaign. The remainder will go towards building the much needed quarantine unit at the PAWS-PATAS shelter.

On Saturday December 14, Iceland (Overseas) stores throughout Spain are raising money for various charities. The Vera branch has chosen PAWS-PATAS. There will be helpers all day packing the customers’ bags of Christmas goody provisions, plus a tombola and lots of information about the animal charity.

PAWS-PATAS is always in need of extra voluntary help, either in one of the charity’s four outlets or caring for the animals, fostering or helping with administration and fundraising.

Most beautiful ALCUDIA and Pollensa have been named as two of ‘the most beautiful villages in Spain’ at an annual conference held in Zamora.

Organised by the Association of the Most Beautiful Villages in Spain, 94 municipalities across the country were recognised for their cultural interest as well as their commitment to the environment and historical heritage.

Established in 2011, the association aims to promote and preserve the natural and rural legacy of different geographical areas across Spain that have a lower level of industrialisation and population.

The list seeks to give visibility to a selection of tourist destinations with initiatives that serve to boost the promotion of the municipalities.

The coveted conference once again included Alcudia and Pollensa, where the organisers hope to erect a sign in the two municipalities, signifying their inclusion into the list.

It is understood that the association are set to further promote all of those included in the list in order to attract visitors to Spain from other European countries.

Gandia guards THE Rural Surveillance service of Gandia will step up its work in order to prevent fires, thefts and dumping of illegal waste in the sea and beach of l’Auir and in nearby mountainous areas.

Local officers will pay special attention to the urban areas of Marxuquera, where there are several private urbanisations, all with the purpose of carrying out prevention work on forest fires.

The field and mountain guards will not enter residential areas, but will closely monitor the entire perimeter, as indicated by the mayor of Responsible Management of the Territory of Gandia, Alícia Izquierdo. The councillor explained that the Rural Surveillance team has prepared a report to maximise work times and “be able to reach more places” over different shifts.

Izquierdo explained that this team consists of four officers, who patrol by car and motorcycles through different areas of the city. “The group is operational 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and handles dozens of cases a week.”

Generous donations ALMUÑECAR got stuck into the collection for the Food Bank and managed to raise over 10 tonnes of food. The municipality once again proved its solidarity as residents selflessly helped the neediest. The food collection campaign was organised by the Food Bank in the city’s main supermarkets. Between shoppers at Mercadona, Lidl and Día, they amassed an amazing total of 10,159 kilograms.

Coordinator of the campaign, Antonio Rodríguez indicated the amounts collected in each supermarket. In Mercadona at Mercado de San Cristóbal, 5,568 kilos were donated to the Food Bank. In Lidl shoppers gave 3,102 kilos and in Día an extra 1,489 kilograms. Rodríguez highlighted what a fantastic achievement this was, as the food was mainly collected over the course of one day. He said the bad weather and heavy rain on the Friday meant people didn’t visit the supermarkets, leaving just the Saturday to finish the collection successfully.

In 2018 in Spain, 21.5 per cent of people were at risk of poverty and the Food Bank works to feed people and families who need it most.

THE Bank of Spain has asked the Spanish government (which is still reviewing next year’s budget) to offer incen­ tives to workers so that they will continue to work past the age of 65 during what is a transition period.

I t i s i n t e n d e d t h a t t h e r e­ tirement age should be 67, but at the moment it is possible for an individual to claim full retirement benefit at the age of 65 and 11 months which the Bank considers to be a drain on the economy.

A new series of guidelines are being drawn up through the Organisation for Economic Co­operation and Develop­ ment (OECD) which has some 36 mem­ bers including the USA and although it is based in Paris, France doesn’t want to wait before raising the new taxes.

The French government intends to slap a 3 per cent tax on any company with a turnover in excess of €750 million provided that at least €25 million was generated in France and this will be ap­

plied for most of 2019.

The bulk of companies most likely to be affected are American and include Amazon (who have already increased their prices in France by 3 per cent), Ap­ ple, Facebook and Microsoft.

The US government has responded warning that it may impose heavy im­ port duties on French produced goods including Champagne, cheese, women’s make­up, handbags and porcelain which could see landed prices in US double.

This may deter France and other Euro­ pean countries from going through with their new digital taxes.

Early retirement appeal

THE European Court of Justice has ruled that a decision concerning the refusal to allow early retirement with pension for two people by the Superior Court of Justice of Galicia is contrary to European law.

The two people had been work­ ing in both Spain and Germany but the Spanish Social Services had not taken into account payments made towards pensions in Germany and had therefore refused to allow early retirement on full pension.

It has been referred back to the Spanish Courts for a final review.

LEGALLY SPEAKING Is Civil Service Pension Taxed?

I read your earlier articles about changes in the 2013 double taxation agreement between Spain and the UK which affect the treatment of government pensions in the two countries.

Under the previous Double Taxation Treaty Spain did not require declaration of the UK government pension.

Now the Spanish tax agency has grabbed €2,190 from my bank account for unpaid tax from 2014.

I M (Costa del Sol) Here is how it works. Under the YOU AND THE p r e v i o u s t r e a t y , LAW IN SPAIN for the Spanish Tax Agency, the UK government pension simply did not exist. Now, the total amount of the UK gov­ ernment pension is added to your other income in order to determine the tax rate. If your OAP is less than about €12,000 it would be taxed at 20 per cent. If your government pension is €35,000, this bumps you into the 31 per cent bracket when added to the OAP. Then the amount of the gov­ ernment pension is removed and the new and higher tax rate is applied, but only to the OAP. See Article 18 of the 2013 tax treaty.

In the end it hopes to move to €1.2 billion in long­term loans and the balance in short term borrowing which can be quickly replaced if need­ ed.

There has been a massive growth in people taking advan­ tage of DNA testing sites to dis­ cover their ancestry and it is esti­ mated that the 26 million tests undertaken so far by companies such as AncestryDNA and 23andme may just be the tip of the iceberg.

Quite frankly, if it meant get­ ting the precocious and downright dis­ respectful little brat ‘Greta’ out of our lives, I’d almost be prepared to do just that.

The very sight of this glowering, self­ proclaimed, ‘voice of the children,’ is actually enough to make me want to go out and help stoke up a few coal fired boilers! The pure hypocrisy and ig­ norance of this little twerp really does defy the imagination. Almost every­ thing today’s kids take completely for granted is responsible for pouring more daily emissions into the atmosphere in a month than our generation produced over the entire length of their young lives. I notice this young lady hasn’t vis­

This isn’t surprising. Heaven forbid she would want the Chinese conglom­ erates to take notice of her reprimand­ ing rantings. I mean what on earth would she and her followers do with­

out their mobile phones, PCs, videos, Gameboys and countless other gismos that are manufactured by the biggest emission producer on the planet? Give us all a break Greta. We know you probably mean well, but if the adults, who are undoubtedly manipulating you, are not feathering their nest in

some way or another, I’ll stick on a loin­ cloth and join the next marching bunch of time wasters myself.

Purely by chance I’ll be in London for this week’s election. Last time I experi­ enced that situation, Labour won the keys to Number 10 and with Blair’s beady eyes on the oil fields of Iraq, sub­

sequently proceeded to lie and inveigle us into joining the USA in a disastrous Mid­East conflict which still affects us all to this day ­ including the recent murders on London Bridge!

Before their tenure was up Labour had raided the pension fund, sold off our gold reserves for a pittance and bled the nations coffers dry. Unfortu­ nately memories in this direction are ei­ ther very short or actually non­existent.

Heaven help us all if they get in again.

Delighted to announce I shall be pre­ senting a new radio programme in Jan­ uary of next year. It is on line and airs under the title of ExPat Radio. The pro­ gramme will be going out live, so what an opportunity that will give everyone to ‘ave a pop! It’s actually been some 20 years since I regaled the airwaves on a regular basis, so really looking for­ ward to it. I’ll give out all the details nearer the date. Have a good week.

A most Scandinavian Christmas HAVE you ever imagined what Christmas is like in Scandinavia? Surely beautiful, like one of those story postcards and also something a little bit different from our own ... Let’s imag­ ine that we have landed in Denmark, specifi­ cally in Aarhus. It is there we would get carried away by Danish traditions, by its hygge philos­ ophy that is synonymous with happiness. We would breathe its Nordic style to transform our homes during the most special season of the year.

How to prepare Danish Christmas Our houses are dressed ready for a party. We decorate the common areas, where we share space with the people we want to celebrate these days with. In Denmark you cannot miss the colours red and white, candles are one of those accessories that are especially important in Danish homes and they have great promi­ nence with crowns made of pine and decorated with natural elements, such as red berries or pineapples.

FAKE news is all around us. We can’t escape it. It’s everywhere.

First up, Trump’s own fake news ­ all his fake promises. Is there any state­ ment Trump’s made which he’s not blithely gone back on? Which reminds me of the old joke: ‘How can you tell when Donald Trump is lying?’ ­ ‘His lips move!’

But Trump’s lies aren’t the only prob­ lem. It’s the millions who swallow them ‘bigly’ who really matter. During his election campaign he produced a letter that said he would be the ‘healthiest in­ dividual ever elected to the presiden­ cy.’ But the doctor named as its author later said Trump had written the letter himself. When the next analysis of Trump lies is published it’ll doubtless run into volumes. Which reminds me, too, of an old Two Ronnies’ joke that goes like this.

Second up, another instance of fake news ­ or, more simply, plain old lies ­ nearer home. This concerns the former MP, Harvey Proctor. He’s to receive compensation and costs from the Met­ ropolitan Police of nearly £900,000 over their botched VIP sex abuse in­ quiry costing £2.5m into false allega­ tions of paedophilia and child murder by the fantasist ‘Nick’.

You’ll recall the officer in charge not only got promoted but a gold­plated pension plus all accompanying perks, such as free truncheons for life.

We’re never going to be fake­news­ free, that’s obvious. But wouldn’t it be nice if in 2020 ­ and, in fact, the whole of the next decade ­ there could be a bit more truthfulness. On the part of

politicians, celebrities, basically, anyone in the public eye. Wishful thinking, I know... Now, I’m not demanding a re­ turn to early closing days and the rein­ troduction of the Austin Allegro. But sometimes, I still think I’ve been ab­ ducted in my sleep and, on awakening, find myself on the planet Vacuousa or­ biting the star Gormlessia.

Ban the scooters THIS electric scooter business real­ ly is just insanity. It’s got to the point I can’t even remember the times I have nearly been run over by one. I myself am a slow walker and have to take my time. Sometimes, I’ll find that as I go around corners there will suddenly be one of those scooter maniacs rushing straight at me.

It’s quite a frightening situation to be in and I don’t want to even think about what would happen if I got hit.

Occasionally, you’ll see a news story with some horrible accidents hap­ pening.

And it’s not just for pedestrians like myself, but the actual people on the scooter. I saw on the news that a young woman was killed after she crashed her scooter into the lorry. THE use of performance-enhancing drugs in competitive sports is a practice that goes back centuries, possibly to the creation of sports as a concept. Doping was already common in the ancient Olympics in Greece and even chariot racers in ancient Rome drank herbal infusions before their races. Scandinavian mythology says that Berserker fighters drank a mushroom mixture called ‘butotens’ that increased their physical strength at the risk of insanity.

Doping is now prohibited by most international sports organisations, who consider the use of drugs to be unethical and against the ‘spirit of sport.’

Measures against doping are taken very seriously, as it has been demonstrated by the shock four-year ban that has been imposed on Russia.

Worldwide Anti-Doping Agency Wada found Russia’s National anti-doping agency non-compliant for manipulating laboratory results. This means that the Russian flag and anthem will not be allowed at international events like the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and the 2022 football World Cup in Qatar. Russian athletes who can prove they weren’t involved in the doping scandal will still be allowed to compete under a neutral flag.

Russian president Vladimir Putin said the country had 21 days to appeal against the ban and Russian prime minister Dmitry Medvedev said that although doping problems exist in the country, the ban was part of ‘chronic anti-Russian hysteria.’

A NEW report shows that a high intake of nuts may help protect the elderly from cognitive decline.

A team of researchers in Barcelona ex­ amined whether a diet high in nuts might help protect against age­related cognitive decline over a three­year period.

A total of 119 participants aged 65 and over with dementia were selected from the InCHIANTI cohort, a representative population­based study of elderly resi­ dents of Chianti, Italy. Participants were selected based on their nut intake: non­ nut consumers and regular nut consumers (2.9 g/day).

Nut exposure was measured at the be­ ginning of the study with a validated food frequency questionnaire or with an ana­ lytical tool for the characterisation of phenolic compounds. In addition, cogni­ tive decline was measured using the Mini­ Mental State Examination test.

Researchers found that, from 119 sub­ jects, 38 participants experienced cogni­ tive decline, 28 from the non­nut con­ sumers group and 10 from the nut

consumers group. Nut consumption esti­ mated either by the dietary marker or by the urinary marker model was in both cases associated with lower cognitive decline.

“The use of a panel of metabolites provides ac­ curate and comple­ mentary information on nut exposure and reinforces the results obtained using dietary in­ formation,” said Professor Andrés­ Lacueva, ICREA Academia at the Uni­ versity of Barcelona, Group leader of CIBERFES on Frailty and Healthy Age­ ing and principal investigator of the study.

The study was supported and fund­ ed by the INC (International Nut & Dried Fruit Council) and published in Molecular Nutrition & Food Research.

wrinkle­causing oxidative damage caused by a poor diet, stress and pollution. * Legumes ­ lentils, beans, nuts and peas ­ contain fibre, protein, and are full of an­ tioxidants. The fibre in these foods help trap toxins in the digestive system, dis­ pelling them from the body before they can be absorbed and affect the appearance of our skin. They are also high in vitamins C and E which have been found to protect the skin against UV radiation from the sun. * Orange and yellow fruits and vegeta­ bles, beef liver, eggs and butter contain vit­ amin A, which is found in two forms, beta­ carotene and active vitamin A. These foods have been found to be protective against wrinkles, because without enough vitamin A, the body can’t heal from cuts, scratches or damage. It keeps skin cells bound tightly reducing the appearance of lines. * A tablespoon or two of olive oil each day provides healthy monounsaturated fats, necessary to hold water in the cells, it is also incredibly high in antioxidants. It contains large amounts of vitamin E, more than most plant­based oils, as well as other

protective antioxidants such as lutein and vitamin A. This makes it one of the best fats for pre­ venting wrinkles and keeping skin moisturised.

Dieticians also recommend a diet rich in potassium (fruit and vegetables), in particular bananas, spinach and avocado.

Other musts are fish high in omega­3 to help the skin sustain fluidity and flexibility and high protein foods like chicken, fish, pork and beef, together with dairy and beans.

By Barbara Belt barbarabelt@gmail.com DEAR readers, Christmas has crept up on us again. The festive season has been sneaked forward, in the hope that a twinkle of tinsel and a snatch of the ‘Away in a Manger /Silent Night’ loop will drive us all into a spending frenzy. Hold firm!

The small island of La Gomera, where we’ve taken root, was Christmas consumer nonsense free until recently. The snowball’s rolling now though. Reindeers, Christmas trees, the Coca Cola Father Christmas; you name it, we’ve got it all twinkling at us from late November onwards.

Canarian Christmas before was family dinner on the 24th, midnight mass and a day off work on the 25th. Presents weren’t given until Reyes on January 6 and it was Baltasar, Melchor and Gaspar who brought them. Father Christmas didn’t feature then, but he’s extended his flight path to include us and we must spend accordingly.

It makes for a long festive season, tough on both pocket and liver. While the UK’s undecorating on 12th night (6/1), we’re lurching into party mode, with our little church across the valley scene of an excellent three-day bash, involving a danced procession with songs, local drums and castanets.

A Taste of Christmas Turkey & Cranberry Meatballs IT’S time to get our Christmas taste buds tingling… ready for the festive delights to come. A plate of these as tapas with a glass of mulled wine makes a lovely party snack. Or a bowlful can make a main meal, stir through some pasta if you like, it’s your supper!

First of all get a small saucepan on a low heat and add a handful of dried cranberries and cover with some cold water, a table­ spoon of icing sugar and some orange zest.

Leave to simmer away until reduced to a thick sauce, then leave to cool. Mix 1kg of turkey mince, zest of a lemon, grated parmesan, salt, pepper, torn basil leaves and finely chopped dried cranberries, then form into meatballs, the size of your choice! Leave in the fridge until you want to cook them.

To cook melt some butter with some olive oil in a large pan, add the meatballs, cook until nice and caramelised then put in an oven dish. Give the pan a wipe out with kitchen roll and put back on the heat. Add a glass of red wine, reduce a little, then add a glass of chicken stock, reduce for an­ other minute then add the cranberry mix­ ture. Bring to the boil then pour over the

meatballs and put in a medium oven until the meatballs are cooked through. A knife into the centre of one will soon tell you when they are perfect!

Easy home-made Christmas bread sauce Festivities in the air Ingredients • 1 large onion, peeled • 12 cloves • 550ml milk • 2 bay leaves • 10 peppercorns • Pinch of grated nutmeg • Salt • 110g fresh white breadcrumbs • 100g butter • 60ml cream Method Cut the onion in half. Stud the onion with cloves and put into a saucepan with the milk and bay leaf.

Add the peppercorns, nutmeg and a good pinch of salt. Bring to the boil very slowly.

Once boiling, remove from heat and leave to infuse for 30 minutes.

Strain the milk onto the breadcrumbs. Add the butter and cream, mix well and return to the saucepan.

Reheat the sauce gently without boiling it.

Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary. If the sauce is too thick, beat in a little hot milk.

The sauce should have a creamy consistency.

BREAD SAUCE: A creamy consistency.

Method Preheat the oven to 200ºC. Put the fat in a large roasting tin, sprinkle generously with sea salt and pepper and place in the oven.

Meanwhile, cook the potatoes in a large saucepan of boiling water for 8­10 minutes until part boiled.

Drain well and if the potatoes are large, cut them in half. Return the potatoes to the empty saucepan and shake vigorously to roughen their outsides.

Arrange the potatoes and rosemary sprigs in the hot fat and roast for 45 minutes. If they look as if they are beginning to char around the edges, reduce the oven temperature to 180°C. Turn the potatoes over and roast for a fur­ ther 30 minutes until crisp.

Infrastructure overhaul TIJOLA’S water supply network is set to undergo a €450,000 overhaul.

The Diputacion de Almeria announced the administrative processes for implementing the investment package in the municipality have been finalised, and provincial Public Works deputy Oscar Liria said the contract for the Tijola Hydraulic Infrastructure Renewal Plan has now been awarded.

The Tijola project is part of a more than €8 million provincial government outlay on water infrastructure managed by the Galasa public company in the Levante and Almanzora regions; measures in Tijola and Arboleas bring the series of investments to a close.

The Tijola works include the replacement of more than 1.5 kilometres of pipes and 233 domestic connections. The town streets to benefit from the updates are Sevilla, Madrid, Cadiz, Granada, Filabres, Virgen del Carmen, Alcalde Perez Arriaga, Juan de Austria, Ra-

Sightseeing in inland villages COSTA ALMERIA residents had the chance to explore inland villages Seron and Bacares thanks to a Turismo Almanzora business association-organised excursion.

Some 50 people from Albox, Huercal-Overa and Los Gallardos took part in Sunday’s day trip, on which Seron and Bacares councils collaborated.

After a warm welcome from Seron Tourism councillor Caridad Lopez and a breakfast of churros and chocolate, Turismo Cultural Seron guide Maribel Garcia took the group on a tour which took them through the village streets, to the Remedios hermitage and the Asuncion church and on to the castle.

Maribel explained key points in the history of the locality, including the Christian reconquest and the Moorish rebellion.

The Seron visit ended with a tasking of locally produced, prize-winning goats cheese, then it was off to Bacares for a lunch of typical dishes of the region, among them roasted pork cheeks.

Highlights of the tour around the village included stops at the castle viewing point, the town laundry, the ethnographic museum and the Santo Cristo del Bosque church.

At the end of the day the visitors enjoyed mouth-watering cakes made with locally produced almonds from a village patisserie.

The Turismo Almanzora business association underlined the importance of these kinds of initiatives as a means of boosting the region’s tourism. It said it believed trips of this kind show people living in Almeria what the villages have to offer visitors.

Tribute to blood donors ALBOX hosted this year’s annual tribute to blood donors in Almeria.

There was recognition for the nearly 800 Albox residents who give blood every year at the municipal health centre on the dates organised by the Blood Donors’ Association in an act celebrated at the Federico Garcia Lorca events hall in the old town hall building.

Vice-President of the Asociacion de Donantes de Vida (Association of Life Donors) Ramon Rodriguez underlined just how unselfish and thinking of their fellow man are the people who donate blood or an organ to Spanish society.

Albox mayor Francisco Torrecillas, second deputy mayor Maria Dolores Fiñana, and Albox Donors’ Association President Maria Oller stressed the point that more than 10 per cent of the municipality’s population give blood.

Pause in Wonder A FRIEND recently remarked they were glad Christmas comes in December to brighten up the winter, and scorned my comment that Christmas actually related to the birth of Jesus who probably wasn’t born in De­ cember anyway.

Sadly understanding of the Christmas sto­ ry is fading. Many children are unaware whose birthday we’re celebrating and few know He was born in Bethlehem. Even adults know little of the nativity story and many consider it irrelevant to their Christ­ mas.

Yet Albert Einstein once wrote that the greatest wonder we can experience is the mysterious, the source of all true art and science and that anyone unable to pause in wonder standing rapt in awe, is as good as dead, his eyes blind.

So as we frantically ‘shop­‘til­ we­drop’, send cards to people we never see, buy pre­ sents for those who want for nothing and collapse exhausted on Christmas Eve, we should pause and reflect on the real Christ­ mas and its meaning.

Christmas is a time of peace, as pro­

claimed by the angels, giving ‘Glory to God on high.’ It’s a time of hope, poised as it is between two years, at the crossroads of past and future. A previous year, with its blessings and trials, is gone; a new year ahead, full of uncertainty, with Christmas between ­ the celebration of a birth 2000 years ago, a perennial bright spot on our calendars. And Christmas should also be a time of love centred around the greatest love story ever told, the story of a God who loved us so much that He sent His only Son to rebuild a broken world.

The Christmas story, retold each year, never loses its majesty; nor ceases to fill our hearts with wonder. A baby born into a grim and dark world as a shining light across the barren landscape, a light that still invites all to come into the warmth of God’s grace and find peace, hope, and love.

So how about this Christmas living that story at one of the various crib or carol ser­ vices available in this part of Spain and as we reflect on this amazing story, let’s pray that this Christmas we may each discover His peace, His love and Hope.

That’s because it doesn’t matter to me which one of the lying toe rags gets in as every one of them will promise this, that and the other then find a reason not to carry out whatever it was that tempted you to vote for them. Johnson can’t an­ swer a straight question or just lies. Corbyn gets asked if he watches the Queen’s speech ­ says yes, he watches it in the morning. The interviewer then points out it’s on in the afternoon! So he lied and lied over the silliest thing. Who cares if he watches? Just say no ­ now he’s made an idiot of himself again.

All the parties promise all sorts, none of which they could carry out. Remember the Lib Dems promise to get rid of student loans? And the minute they did a deal with the Tories they just let it go. Most politi­

cians won’t even go on TV and debate and if they do they cherry pick the interviewers so they don’t get anyone who will give them a hard time. Anyway, good luck to all the people in the UK ­ whoever gets in you will need it!

Marks and Spencer have decided that their changing rooms are now going to be mixed gender. What do you think about that? I know what I think. IT’S A STUPID DECISION for so many reasons. There are two sexes ­ male and female. Of course, there are apparently many genders and, as I’ve said before, good luck to everyone.

But you have to have some guidelines to protect the innocent from the few that want to take advantage of children and others. You just can’t have blokes walking in on young girls or women in changing rooms. Marks and Spencer have faced crit­ icism over its new policy allowing Trans people into the fitting room they ‘feel most comfortable’ in. It’s time to stop all this. Minorities cannot dictate how majori­ ties wish to conduct their lives. Simple.

I was pleased to see that Spain has changed the law regarding electric scoot­ ers. They can no longer be used on pave­ ments. Riders caught doing so will be fined up to €500 by Spanish police. I wrote about this over a year ago. Remember?

THE weather was kind for the fi­ nals of the FAB men’s and ladies pairs bowling.

The competition got underway on November 28, the ladies play­ ing at Indalo Bowling Club and the men at Almeria Bowling Club.

Both finals were then held at the Almeria club on Sunday Decem­ ber 1.

Fortunately it stayed fine and sunny throughout.

In the ladies’ event, Judy Abel and Chris Parkinson from the In­ dalo Bowling Club won against Eileen Phoenix and Carol Roberts from Almeria Bowling Club.

The winners in the men’s event were Adrian Davis and Mark Nay­ lor from Almeria Bowling Club af­ ter beating Adrian Sussex and Keith Lester from Indalo Bowling Club The ladies’ final was good to watch. Carol and Eileen went ahead on the ninth end, but Judy and Chris levelled up on the 10th.

There was great expectation

about the men’s final after both pairs gave strong performances in the lead­up. It certainly lived up to the anticipation, with nip and tuck throughout the competition.

Keith and Adrian were ahead 13­ 10 on the 16th end. The next end

saw two shots scored by Adrian and Mark, but with Keith and Adrian still one shot ahead 13­12.

On the 18th Keith and Adrian were holding shots, which effec­ tively would have been a score hard for Adrian and Mark to beat.

Then with his last wood Adrian went ahead, taking the end by one shot and levelling the score 13­13.

An extra end was then played.

More excitement again when Kei­ th and Adrian were again holding winning shots. On his first bowl Adrian Davis played a controlled drive, splitting the head and giv­ ing Adrian and Mark a one­shot lead with the Jack very close to the green border. This proved to be the winning shot, as Keith and Adrian were unable to take the match, giving Adrian Davies and Mark Naylor the championship At the end of competition Almeria Captain, Chris Brown pre­ sented the prizes and trophy to the finalists. He thanked all the umpires, Tony Lear for running the competition and Bryan Hugh­ es for managing the green. He al­ so thanked the competitors, and last of all the supporters, who numbered around 50 on finals day.

His weight was great and his jab was tremendous.”

Promoter Eddie Hearn added: “He taught himself to box like that ­ the disci­ pline was incredible. All the things no­one thought he possessed. That’s be­ cause he’s getting better.
