KILLER SENTENCED THE man who ended his partner’s life after stabbing her over 100 times in La Viñuela, has been sentenced to 23 years in jail. Malaga’s Provincial Court found him guilty of first-degree murder as they proved the defendant ended María Adela’s life in a ‘premeditated and cruel’ manner. The gavel has finally come down for José Manuel O T after he stabbed his partner to death in February 2018. Following the popular jury’s unanimous decision, the defendant must also compensate the victim’s only child with €175,400. After a four-month relationship, José Manuel pounced on defenceless María Adela in her own home, and repeatedly drove a knife into her.

OFFICERS ATTACKED ON DUTY
THE events occurred in the early hours of Monday in the town of Alta Axarquía. During a routine breathalyser test performed by the Guardia Civil, an individual, who had been stopped by the officers, refused to undergo the corresponding test and became aggressive. One officer suffered a sprained wrist from a fall when pushed by the aggressor and the other officer needed stitches to his ear and chin after allegedly being punched twice in the face by the same individual. With great difficulty, the officers were able to immobilise and arrest the alleged aggressor, who offered great resistance at all times. The individual, a 30-yearold mechanic from the area, was accompanied by his girlfriend, and is being investigated for an alleged crime against law enforcement officers and another for reckless driving. According to reports, this is not the first time that the aggressor has had a traffic altercation with the officers of the Guardia Civil who patrol the municipality, although until now he had not
physically assaulted anyone. The mayor, Rafael Torrubia (PSOE), lamented the incident and wished “a fast recovery to the injured officers.”

Medieval times AROUND 20,000 people have visited the Medieval Market in Almuñecar since its opening to the public last Friday, on the Paseo de San Cristobal. The event has been a popular tourist attraction for visitors and neighbours who arrived in the municipality of Sexitano where 50 stalls were set up along the promenade in front of the Almunecar Playa hotel. Among the participants were almost a dozen merchants, groups and local artisans also wearing medieval costumes. The Medieval Market offered, in addition to tastings and samples, numerous and different attractions for all ages, from falconry, through games and crafts among others. THE town hall of Velez-Malaga has presented two motions related to environmental issues and the coastline. The first is to conduct a study of the dynamics of the coastline whilst the other looks at regenerating part of Mezquitilla beach with the materials from concrete plant Poligono Los Zamoranos.
TWO individuals were arrested by the Local Police in Rincon de la Victoria after driving while being three times over the permitted alcohol rate. The arrests took place after emergency ser vices were called when a vehicle collided with a lamppost in the El Cantal area.
Bookworms THE mayor of Nerja José Alberto Armijo has announced the construction of a new municipal library on the Balcón de Europa, the town’s most iconic landmark. Councillors have welcomed the project in the historic centre, that will be in collaboration with Nerja Cave Foundation.
United youth MOTRIL’S Immigration Department celebrated Human Rights Day with 250 students from different schools in the municipality. The town hall activity was part of the Intercultural Awareness project and had the objective of educating the children about fundamental rights regardless of nationality.

A CHRISTMAS LEGEND Olentzero is a popular character in northern Spain who, according to Christmas traditions, visits towns and villages late at night on December 24 to leave presents for the children. LEGEND has it that Olentzero was abandoned as a new born in the woods, where he was rescued by a fairy who bestowed on him the gifts of strength and kindness. With the fairy’s help, he turned into a strong man who lived in the mountains and worked as a c h a r c o a l b u r n e r. H e w a s a k i n d man, who carved wooden toys for the village children, which he
would take down to them in a coal sack. It is believed that he died as he was saving children from a burning house. But, upon seeing this, the fairy granted him eternal life so he could continue bringing joy. Darker versions of the tradition depict Olentzero as a drunkard who lives hidden away in the forest and who only comes out dur-
ing Christmas to leave presents. In many villages, parents would warn their children that Olentzero would climb down the chimney and cut their throats with a sickle if they didn’t go to bed. In northern towns in Navarra a n d t h e B a s q u e C o u n t r y, p e o p l e dress up as Olentzero and make intricate floats that participate in festive parades on November 24.
Emblematic tower Booming business TORROX COSTA is currently considering the possibility of opening their landmark lighthouse to the public. The idea was raised when Mayor Óscar Medina and councillor for Culture and Heritage, María de los Ángeles Ruiz, held a meeting with Malaga’s Port Authority. Many visitors have asked about accessing the lighthouse, which is currently closed for security reasons. Ruiz explained that the lighthouse would give people the possibility to enjoy Torrox’s most iconic landmark, as well as the ample views over the Roman built town. The mayor added that the local government is continuously working to make the most of all of Torrox’s many touristic resources. He indicated that it was necessary to evaluate all the potential local attractions that could captivate visitors and allow them to explore the municipality considered to have the Best Climate in Europe.

MALAGA hotel chain Soho Boutique Hotels is thriving, as the company announces four new establishments in Malaga City. Area Director Manuel Camacho said they will open in the coming 15 months. By April 2021, Soho Hotels will own 404 beds in the city as well as 30 tourist apartments. The first establishment that will be opened is Soho Colón on Alameda Colón in the city centre. Building work on the future four-star hotel is expected to finish before the end of the year, with a total of 48 rooms and two suites on offer. In March 2020, Soho Urban will be inaugurated, a three-star central hotel that will overlook Calle Vendeja. Their biggest project, as highlighted by Camacho, will be the renovations on the future Soho Castillo de Santa Catalina. The five-star hotel will open after the castle, currently used for events, is transformed into a luxurious 22room hotel.

Traditional tasting BENAJARAFE is set to celebrate the 12th edition of the ‘Migas Day’ on Sunday, December 15; an event i n w h i c h re s i d e n t s a n d v i s i t o r s come together to enjoy the traditional dish of La Axarquia. The deputy mayor of Benajarafe, J Hipólito Gómez, and Juan Luis Calderdón, from the celebrations committee, gave details of this event in which musical performances, children’s animations and the participation of the parish will be highlights. J Hipólito Gómez stated “the strong support of the government team towards the traditions of the different areas of the municipality such as this day
involving the community, in which residents and visitors come together to celebrate the tasting of the traditional cuisine of the region.” The activities will begin at 12.30pm on Sunday, with the opening of the courtyard of the Church, where most of the activities will be held. Then, attendees can enjoy the performance of the local Dance Academy ‘Tacones al aire,’ the ‘Pastoral Del Mar’ and the ‘Pastoral El Chorro.’ At 2.30pm the serving of migas will begin with the symbolic contribution of only €1. From 4pm the performances of the ‘La Tinaja’ Benojarafe Rociero Choir, the ‘Pastoral Río Granadilla’ and finally the ‘Los Pastoral Los de Torremoya’ will take place.
European feast EXPATS in Almuñecar inaugurated the Christmas Market in Plaza de la Constitución, where it was received with great enthusi-
asm and ended with great success. The market was open from morning till night over the long bank holiday weekend and was
organised with the participation of local associations formed by European residents. To w n h a l l r e p r e s e n t a tives took part in the official opening and toured the stalls, greeting all of t h e a s s o c i a t i o n ’s r e p r e sentatives. The main attraction was the big selection of Christmas dishes and treats, including traditional desserts and confectionary from each group’s country. The associations based in Almuñecar and La Herradura, have once again joined together to offer their gastronomic traditions and a good atmosphere for residents and tourists alike. This is the second market to be celebrated over the festive period, with a local artisan market planned to start on Monday, December 16 on the Paseo del Altillo.

Captivating capture AN image by the talented photographer Leonardo Cervilla Rivero has been chosen as the winner of the Almuñécar Easter Poster Competition. Organised by the Brotherhood Association, a jury selected Cervilla Rivero’s stunningly captured image of the Christ of the Good Death to feature on next year’s poster to mark holy week. Chosen for his great show of artistic and technical quality through the art of chiaroscuro, the photographer was awarded €400, a stay at a 4-star hotel and a certificate of distinction. The second prize was awarded to Natalia Ruiz Ruiz with Cervilla Rivero also taking home third place for a separate photograph. The competition received 20 outstanding submissions, where each participant was tasked with showcasing an iconic image that signifies one of Spain’s most beloved religious festivals. After the winners were announced, José Carlos Linares, the Chairman of the association, thanked every individual who took part for their effort and urged them to enter next year.

POSTER CONTEST: All the drawings are on show. THE winners of Almuñecar’s Christmas Poster Contest were announced this week, which saw submissions from almost 1,000 schoolchildren across the municipality. Hosted at the House of Brotherhood on Tuesday, December 10, the jury awarded 12 children for their fantastic work and dedication to the competition. The first prize winners included Ruiz Moreno and Rocío López Jerónimo from CEIP Río Verde and Laura Puerta from CEIP Virgen de la Antigua. For those that would like to see this year’s fabulous array of entries, all of the drawings will be exhibited next to the grand nativity scene, which is open to the public from 7pm to 9pm throughout the month.

Prestigious poetry THE Association ‘Amigos de La Herradura’ held a distinguished awards ceremony for its 13th Poetry Contest on December 7. The Gala paid tribute to the memory of Paulino Álvarez, the dedicated organiser and coordinator of the cultural event, who sadly passed away last February. The function took place on Saturday in the Centro Cívico auditorium in La Herradura. Musical entertainment accompanied the poetry, with special appearances including guitarist Miguel de Carmen, Fabiana Balserini, Ivo Fernández
García playing the violonchelo, Sonidos Sanadores and Ismael López and Hugo Barberon Ruiz playing the piano and the violin. Thanks to the tireless work of Paulino Álvarez, the award enjoys national and international prestige and contributes to enriching the cultural life of La Herradura. Changing your UK driving licence for a Spanish one IN the event that Brexit occurs on or before January 31, then those considered residents in Spain will need to have taken action with regards to their UK driving licences. There is something of a double edged sword in as much as if you have been living and working here for some time, you will be considered a resident even if you haven’t registered with your local council. In order to swap your British driving licence for a Spanish one without taking a test, you have to show that you are registered officially as a resident. Some DGT offices require that you make an appointment and others will accept people just turning up if they are not busy. You need to check in advance to see whether you need to take a medical or not as in some cases they are being requested although in other centres they are not required. mally have to surrender your UK licence, but you will receive a copy of the document you completed showing that you have made the application and have paid the fee which you can show to the police if stopped. It takes about a month for the new Spanish licence to be ready and it is then that you will have to surrender your British licence. In theory, there is supposed to be a nine-month grace period following Brexit during which time you can continue to use a British photo licence whilst driving in Spain, but by the time that Brexit occurs, the regulation may have changed. Equally, if you don’t want to commit at this time, it should be possible to obtain an international driving licence valid for Spain from the DVLC in the UK but as a resident, that would only be good for six months. Failing all of this, if you don’t make the exchange before Brexit then you will eventually have to take a Spanish driving test including the written section. Should you return to the UK for a short period of time, it is perfectly acceptable to drive with a Spanish licence or if you r e t u r n p e r m a n e n t l y, t h e n y o u can exchange for a British licence without taking another test (but a wise precaution would be to keep a copy of the surrendered UK licence).

Love of music A SPECIAL Christmas concert was hosted at the House of Culture in Almuñecar, captivating residents with a performance from the Russian Academy of Music. Taking centre stage was Elena Farkhutdinova, a talented violist who has dedicated her life to teaching chamber music. The concert forms part of a series of festive events that have been organised by the council throughout the municipality this week, where today (Thursday, December 12), a Carol Contest from Mare Nostrum will take place at the Adult Centre from 5pm.
Tomorrow (Friday, December 13), a Christmas animation will dazzle Plaza de la Constitucion from 5pm, where visitors can enjoy live music and gastronomy. This will follow with a presentation of a hotly awaited novel by renowned author Francisco Javier Martín Franco at 7.30pm at the conference room of the House of Culture. A traditional Christmas concert at the Church of the Incarnation will conclude the events on Saturday, December 14, showcasing the talents of the Pedro Mena Children’s Choir who will be directed by José Antonio Pérez Fernandez.
For a better world TO commemorate Human Rights Day, Motril City Council hosted a conference where 250 children from schools across the municipality were invited. The perfect Nordic Christmas EVERYONE dreams of a beautiful picture-postcard, white Christmas. For most Scandanavians, this is a reality and as a nation, they totally embrace everything festive. After a long, dark and gloomy winter, with less than five hours of daylight at the height of the season, Christmas marks a joyful transition in the Nordic region, as the darkness is slowly replaced by light. Christmas in the Nordics is still referred to by its pagan name: Jul in Norway, Sweden and in Denmark, Jol in Iceland and Joulu in Finland. In most of these countries, the weekslong festivities officially kick off with the celebration of St Lucia Day on December 13, in honour of a fourth century martyr from Syracuse. Children traditionally dress up in white, wearing head wreaths and carrying candles, singing angelic hymns. At the heart of the beautiful ceremony is the Lucia bride, a young woman adorned with a crown of candles embedded in lingonberry branches. While it derives from the Lutheran Church, the celebration coincides with the Winter Solstice of the old Julian pagan calendar and now symbolises the

In Iceland, the celebrations being even earlier, on the first Advent Sunday, with the decades-old lighting of the Oslo Christmas tree. The seasonal focus in Denmark is on hygge which roughly describes a feeling of ‘winter cosy.’ Homes, streets and squares are dominated by decorated trees, twinkling lights, candles, ad garland - in fact anything to create a warm atmosphere.
The Nordics normally have two weeks off from work - from December 24 to January 6 (the day of the Epiphany or Day of the Three Kings. January 6 is celebrated across the Christian world as the time when the three Magi came bearing gifts to visit baby Jesus, but in the Nordics, it marks the end of Christmas celebrations. In almost every Nordic culture, a mythical creature begins visiting the homes of children 12 days before Christmas. Excited youngsters put slippers on a window ledge in the hope
they will be left gifts of toys, sweets or cookies. The good-humoured but mischievious gnome - known as Nisse in Denmark, Norway and Sweden - is rumoured to have a long white beard and a pointed red knitted hat. Meanwhile, in Iceland children await the annual arrival of the 13 Yule Lads similar to the seven dwarfs, they have their own strange but endearing traits. However, Icelandic youngsters do not count down the days to the appearance of Gryla, a two-horned mountain
ogress with a face covered in warts who, according to folklore, seeks out and cooks naughty children. The Nordics have many unusual festive traditions, and one Finnish example is the special Christmas Sauna joulusauna - on December 24. A cup of porridge or another treat is brought back to the sauna as an offering for saunatonttu, the sauna elf that is believed to protect the sauna and its visitors from fire and harmful smoke. Christmas Eve dinner is then prepared. Depending on which part of the region they are from, families tend to serve ribbe pork belly (Norway), pork roast or roasted goose and spicy red cabbage (Denmark), Christmas ham and pickled herring in mustard and sour cream (Sweden), grouse with berries in (Iceland), and roast ham with pork feet and ear jelly (Finland). But one thing that unites the whole Nordic region is glögg - its own version of mulled wine - which is often made with cardamom, clove and cinnamon, laced with any strong alcohol to hand. It’s drunk through December to stave off evil spirits running amok in winter and to help fight the freezing cold temperatures.

Twenty years of News in Spain for British expats
In recognition of the fact Euro Weekly News is the best free expat newspaper in Spain, we were exclusively selected by the Spanish press for an insight into the publication which keeps its readers informed of issues that matter - most recently the challenges of Brexit. RENOWNED Spanish media company EFE, interviewed Steven and Michel Euesden, owners of Euro Weekly News. EFE looked to gain some insight into the Euesden family and their successful company. The business owners spoke about 20 years of publishing Spanish news for expats and the new challenges that have arisen with Brexit. Steven and Michel Euesden arrived in Spain in 1995 with a dream and a Suzuki Vitara loaded to the brim. Nowadays, they run the largest free press group for British expats in Spain and know the business like nobody else. The main office of the news group is located on the Costa del Sol, specifically on Avda Ramon y Cajal in the centre of Fuengirola. Will I lose the right to Spanish healthcare? Will I have to change my passport? What will happen to my house on the coast? These are all questions that worry the 249,015 Britons living in Spain after the 2016 referendum. The Euesdens, owners of Euro Weekly News, try to answer these burning ‘Brexit’ questions for their readers every week. The communication group distributes 136,000 copies through six editions that are distributed in the southeast of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands. Fuengirola, Steven Euesden shares a sense of feeling forgotten with his fellow compatriots. He feels that expats have not had a chance to be part of the Brexit process. In total, British expats in Spain account for almost a quarter million peo-
ple, of which 126,013 are men and 123,002 are women. Mostly, they are over 45, but there are also 17,770 children under 15 who call Spain their home. Supporters of remaining in the EU Steven is convinced that the outcome of the Brexit referendum would have been very different if the opinion of British residents in Spain and the rest of the EU had been taken into account. He highlighted that in the UK, many citizens also voted LEAVE as a protest, convinced that the initiative would never actually go ahead. According to Steven Euesden, misinformation is another factor that can explain Brexit. He insists this is the reason why his media company strives to keep the British in Spain informed and he is convinced that if a second referendum were held, the balance would most likely tip towards REMAIN. Euro Weekly News is headquartered in Fuengirola, which alongside Alicante, is the province where most British people reside. The Valencian Community is home to 78,422 Britons, mainly living in Alicante. A further 76,870 Britons reside in Andalucia, mostly in Malaga and along the Costa del Sol. What about my doctor? British people living in Spain are now very concerned about losing their access to Spanish health care, especially as a lot of residents are older and use the healthcare system frequently and many also consider it to be one of the best services in Europe. It may sound like a cliché, but according to Steven Euesden, what the British value most in Spain is the weather, followed by culture and gastronomy. He also added that although a good number of Britons live in close commu-
nities, with fellow expats and maintaining British customs and routines, another important percentage of Britons enjoys and loves participating in local customs. Property is another of this collective’s main concerns. Despite the uncertainty of Brexit, according to data from the Registrar’s Association, the British bought 2,193 homes in Spain in the first quarter of 2019, 1.6 per cent more than in the previous year. The figures consolidate the British as the foreigners who buy the highest number of homes In Spain, especially in Valencia, Andalucia, Murcia and the Canary Islands. Of the 66,294 houses that were bought in Spain by foreigners in 2018, 15.54 per cent were acquired by UK citizens. They are unsure of what to do next, Benjamin George told EFE. As a little boy, he arrived 24 years ago in Spain, clutching his Game Boy and teddy bear in the back seat of his parent’s Suzuki. He now runs the social media side of the publishing group that employs 120 people. He believes that a big part of LEAVE supports now regret their decision, a decision that most took over issues such as immigration or the decreasing value of the pound. Benjamin George defines himself as a ‘guiriluz.’ The mix between ‘guiri,’ the word Spaniards use to refer to foreigners and ‘Andaluz,’ a person from Andalucia. He encourages older Britons who are scared and want to return to the UK, to stay in Spain. Highest heights SUNDAY December 15 is considered one of the most important events of the local sports calendar in Motril with the arrival of ‘La Subida al Conjuro’ organised by the Club Pazito a Pazito de Motril. The event is seen as a ‘personal challenge’ for runners due to the difficulty of the route, which is more than 17 kilometres with a steep slope that

A special homage ORIHUELA honoured the Guardia Civil on a very significant year for the force, as officers celebrate 175 years of service. An impressive commemorative act was prepared with more than 100 officers taking part to mark the 175th anniversary of the Guardia Civil. At the Principe of Asturias roundabout, an impressive monument was inaugurated in their honour. The act was chaired by the Lieutenant General and Chief of Operations, Fernando Santafé Soler, who announced the Guardia Civil would redouble their efforts in the fight against crime to ensure citizens’ safety and security. Also present was Brigadier General in charge of Valencia, José Hermida and the mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana. During the event, the admirable bravery of the Guardia Civil during the September floods was also highlighted and the mayor expressed Orihuela’s appreciation for the Guardia Civil.

CARDIO-STIMULATION DEVICES: 10,000 pacemakers have been implanted. THE Cardiovascular Surgery service of the Regional University Hospital of Malaga, belonging to the Heart Unit, has obtained a certificate of excellence for its practice of implantation of pacemakers granted by the Spanish Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. Each year, more than 250 cardio-stimulation devices are implanted in this centre and this year they celebrated a total of 10,000 pacemakers implanted since 1975. The head of the Cardiovascular Surgery Department, Fernando Calleja, has stated that this distinction means “recognising the maximum level of capacity both to implant pacemakers and to address the problems that may arise from implants.” And added, “Only the teams formed by cardio-surgeons have the capacity and infrastructure necessary to solve the most serious problems that can occur after an implant.”

Success of PAWSPATAS fundraising
THE PAWS-PATAS animal charity annual Christmas Fayre was a resounding success. The event venue, the Plaza Estrella del Cantal in Mojacar, was packed all morning. There was an amazing array of items on sale, including hand-made jewellery, ornaments, garments, cards and toys, as well as a raffle offering great prizes. Music was provided by the Sue Moretta Choir, who performed a selection of contemporary and Christmas songs. Monies raised from the donated entry fee, raffle and stall holders totalled €2,137. From this amount, €370 raised by the cat team will go towards their neutering campaign. The remainder will go towards building the much needed quarantine unit at the PAWS-PATAS shelter. On Saturday December 14, Iceland (Overseas) stores throughout Spain are raising money for various charities. The Vera branch has chosen PAWS-PATAS. There will be helpers all day packing the customers’ bags of Christmas goody provisions, plus a tombola and lots of information about the animal charity. PAWS-PATAS is always in need of extra voluntary help, either in one of the charity’s four outlets or caring for the animals, fostering or helping with administration and fundraising. Gandia guards THE Rural Surveillance service of Gandia will step up its work in order to prevent fires, thefts and dumping of illegal waste in the sea and beach of l’Auir and in nearby mountainous areas. Local officers will pay special attention to the urban areas of Marxuquera, where there are several private urbanisations, all with the purpose of carrying out prevention work on forest fires. The field and mountain guards will not enter residential areas, but will closely monitor the entire perimeter, as indicated by the mayor of Responsible Management of the Territory of Gandia, Alícia Izquierdo. The councillor explained that the Rural Surveillance team has prepared a report to maximise work times and “be able to reach more places” over different shifts. Izquierdo explained that this team consists of four officers, who patrol by car and motorcycles through different areas of the city. “The group is operational 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and handles dozens of cases a week.”

Generous donations ALMUÑECAR got stuck into the collection for the Food Bank and managed to raise over 10 tonnes of food. The municipality once again proved its solidarity as residents selflessly helped the neediest. The food collection campaign was organised by the Food Bank in the city’s main supermarkets. Between shoppers at Mercadona, Lidl and Día, they amassed an amazing total of 10,159 kilograms. Coordinator of the campaign, Antonio Rodríguez indicated the amounts collected in each supermarket. In Mercadona at Mercado de San Cristóbal, 5,568 kilos were donated to the Food Bank. In Lidl shoppers gave 3,102 kilos and in Día an extra 1,489 kilograms. Rodríguez highlighted what a fantastic achievement this was, as the food was mainly collected over the course of one day. He said the bad weather and heavy rain on the Friday meant people didn’t visit the supermarkets, leaving just the Saturday to finish the collection successfully. In 2018 in Spain, 21.5 per cent of people were at risk of poverty and the Food Bank works to feed people and families who need it most.
ALCUDIA and Pollensa have been named as two of ‘the most beautiful villages in Spain’ at an annual conference held in Zamora. Organised by the Association of the Most Beautiful Villages in Spain, 94 municipalities across the country were recognised for their cultural interest as well as their commitment to the environment and historical heritage. Established in 2011, the association aims to promote and preserve the natural and rural legacy of different geographical areas across Spain that have a lower level of industrialisation and population. The list seeks to give visibility to a selection of tourist destinations with initiatives that serve to boost the promotion of the municipalities. The coveted conference once again included Alcudia and Pollensa, where the organisers hope to erect a sign in the two municipalities, signifying their inclusion into the list. It is understood that the association are set to further promote all of those included in the list in order to attract visitors to Spain from other European countries.

THE Bank of Spain has asked the Spanish government (which is still reviewing next year’s budget) to offer incen tives to workers so that they will continue to work past the age of 65 during what is a transition period. I t i s i n t e n d e d t h a t t h e r e tirement age should be 67, but at the moment it is possible for an individual to claim full retirement benefit at the age of 65 and 11 months which the Bank considers to be a drain on the economy.

Many EU countries, including Britain feel that some US digital companies have been avoiding tax and are either in troducing or considering introducing spe cial new taxes in order to ensure that they can no longer ‘get away with it.’ In the case of France it argues that tax es should be based on where the digital activity such as browsing a page takes place, not where the companies in

A new series of guidelines are being drawn up through the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Develop ment (OECD) which has some 36 mem bers including the USA and although it is based in Paris, France doesn’t want to wait before raising the new taxes. The French government intends to slap a 3 per cent tax on any company with a turnover in excess of €750 million provided that at least €25 million was generated in France and this will be ap
plied for most of 2019. The bulk of companies most likely to be affected are American and include Amazon (who have already increased their prices in France by 3 per cent), Ap ple, Facebook and Microsoft. The US government has responded warning that it may impose heavy im port duties on French produced goods including Champagne, cheese, women’s makeup, handbags and porcelain which could see landed prices in US double. This may deter France and other Euro pean countries from going through with their new digital taxes.
Early retirement appeal
THE European Court of Justice has ruled that a decision concerning the refusal to allow early retirement with pension for two people by the Superior Court of Justice of Galicia is contrary to European law. The two people had been work ing in both Spain and Germany but the Spanish Social Services had not taken into account payments made towards pensions in Germany and had therefore refused to allow early retirement on full pension. It has been referred back to the Spanish Courts for a final review.
LEGALLY SPEAKING Is Civil Service Pension Taxed? I read your earlier articles about changes in the 2013 double taxation agreement between Spain and the UK which affect the treatment of government pensions in the two countries. Under the previous Double Taxation Treaty Spain did not require declaration of the UK government pension. Now the Spanish tax agency has grabbed €2,190 from my bank account for unpaid tax from 2014. I M (Costa del Sol) Here is how it works. Under the YOU AND THE p r e v i o u s t r e a t y , LAW IN SPAIN for the Spanish Tax Agency, the UK government pension simply did not exist. Now, the total amount of the UK gov ernment pension is added to your other income in order to determine the tax rate. If your OAP is less than about €12,000 it would be taxed at 20 per cent. If your government pension is €35,000, this bumps you into the 31 per cent bracket when added to the OAP. Then the amount of the gov ernment pension is removed and the new and higher tax rate is applied, but only to the OAP. See Article 18 of the 2013 tax treaty.

The very sight of this glowering, self proclaimed, ‘voice of the children,’ is actually enough to make me want to go out and help stoke up a few coal fired boilers! The pure hypocrisy and ig norance of this little twerp really does defy the imagination. Almost every thing today’s kids take completely for granted is responsible for pouring more daily emissions into the atmosphere in a month than our generation produced over the entire length of their young lives. out their mobile phones, PCs, videos, Gameboys and countless other gismos that are manufactured by the biggest emission producer on the planet? Give us all a break Greta. We know you probably mean well, but if the adults, who are undoubtedly manipulating you, are not feathering their nest in
some way or another, I’ll stick on a loin cloth and join the next marching bunch of time wasters myself. Purely by chance I’ll be in London for this week’s election. Last time I experi enced that situation, Labour won the keys to Number 10 and with Blair’s beady eyes on the oil fields of Iraq, sub
sequently proceeded to lie and inveigle us into joining the USA in a disastrous MidEast conflict which still affects us all to this day including the recent murders on London Bridge! Before their tenure was up Labour had raided the pension fund, sold off our gold reserves for a pittance and bled the nations coffers dry. Unfortu nately memories in this direction are ei ther very short or actually nonexistent. Heaven help us all if they get in again. Delighted to announce I shall be pre senting a new radio programme in Jan uary of next year. It is on line and airs under the title of ExPat Radio. The pro gramme will be going out live, so what an opportunity that will give everyone to ‘ave a pop! It’s actually been some 20 years since I regaled the airwaves on a regular basis, so really looking for ward to it. I’ll give out all the details nearer the date. Have a good week. A most Scandinavian Christmas HAVE you ever imagined what Christmas is like in Scandinavia? It is there we would get carried away by Danish traditions, by its hygge philos ophy that is synonymous with happiness. We would breathe its Nordic style to transform our homes during the most special season of the year. How to prepare Danish Christmas Our houses are dressed ready for a party. We decorate the common areas, where we share space with the people we want to celebrate these days with. In Denmark you cannot miss the colours red and white, candles are one of those accessories that are especially important in Danish homes and they have great promi nence with crowns made of pine and decorated with natural elements, such as red berries or pineapples. Candles in Denmark are used to decorate the crowns (normally there are three that are lit on Sundays before Christmas) and there is one in particular that is really special, the great calendar candle (which are lit from December 1 to 24). I don’t vote in the UK and even if I could I wouldn’t. That’s because it doesn’t matter to me which one of the lying toe rags gets in as every one of them will promise this, that and the other then find a reason not to carry out whatever it was that tempted you to vote for them. Johnson can’t an swer a straight question or just lies. Corbyn gets asked if he watches the Queen’s speech says yes, he watches it in the morning. The interviewer then points out it’s on in the afternoon! So he lied and lied over the silliest thing. Who cares if he watches? Just say no now he’s made an idiot of himself again. But you have to have some guidelines to protect the innocent from the few that want to take advantage of children and others. You just can’t have blokes walking in on young girls or women in changing rooms. Marks and Spencer have faced crit icism over its new policy allowing Trans people into the fitting room they ‘feel most comfortable’ in. It’s time to stop all this. Minorities cannot dictate how majori ties wish to conduct their lives. Simple. I was pleased to see that Spain has changed the law regarding electric scoot ers. They can no longer be used on pave ments. Riders caught doing so will be fined up to €500 by Spanish police. I wrote about this over a year ago. Remember?

Unlike Spain’s recent €21 billion injection of EU funds into its unaffordable rail infrastruc ture and trains, the UK with the latest South West train strike, Diane could shut the British railway system, use all the brown field sites minus current usable track; use surplus track and property sites as allocation for mass building of homes under perhaps a created Ministry of Housing. Ban the scooters THIS electric scooter business real ly is just insanity. It’s got to the point I can’t even remember the times I have nearly been run over by one. I myself am a slow walker and have to take my time. Sometimes, I’ll find that as I go around corners there will suddenly be one of those scooter maniacs rushing straight at me. It’s quite a frightening situation to be in and I don’t want to even think about what would happen if I got hit. Occasionally, you’ll see a news story with some horrible accidents hap pening. And it’s not just for pedestrians like myself, but the actual people on the scooter. I saw on the news that a young woman was killed after she crashed her scooter into the lorry. Imagine what the lorry driver must feel like! It’s not fair on drivers either. I say ban them COMPLETELY. Stephen Miller

Protect the animals HOW much longer will we witness terrible animal abuse in Spain? I keep reading all of these disgraceful stories about animals being tortured and killed. It’s horrible and we need to put a stop to it. I’ve seen some people say on line that the European Union should impose sanctions on Spain. This could be a good idea and might end these heartbreaking acts of evil. There is a big

hunting culture here and it needs to change. I can understand hunting for food up to a point, but cruelty for the sake of it is unimaginable. What goes through their minds? THE use of performance-enhancing drugs in competitive sports is a practice that goes back centuries, possibly to the creation of sports as a concept. Doping was already common in the ancient Olympics in Greece and even chariot racers in ancient Rome drank herbal infusions before their races. Scandinavian mythology says that Berserker fighters drank a mushroom mixture called ‘butotens’ that increased their physical strength at the risk of insanity. Doping is now prohibited by most international sports organisations, who consider the use of drugs to be unethical and against the ‘spirit of sport.’ Measures against doping are taken very seriously, as it has been demonstrated by the shock four-year ban that has been imposed on Russia. Worldwide Anti-Doping Agency Wada found Russia’s National anti-doping agency non-compliant for manipulating laboratory results. This means that the Russian flag and anthem will not be allowed at international events like the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and the 2022 football World Cup in Qatar. Russian athletes who can prove they weren’t involved in the doping scandal will still be allowed to compete under a neutral flag. Russian president Vladimir Putin said the country had 21 days to appeal against the ban and Russian prime minister Dmitry Medvedev said that although doping problems exist in the country, the ban was part of ‘chronic anti-Russian hysteria.’

Have they cracked it? A NEW report shows that a high intake of nuts may help protect the elderly from cognitive decline. A team of researchers in Barcelona ex amined whether a diet high in nuts might help protect against agerelated cognitive decline over a threeyear period. A total of 119 participants aged 65 and over with dementia were selected from the InCHIANTI cohort, a representative populationbased study of elderly resi dents of Chianti, Italy. Participants were selected based on their nut intake: non nut consumers and regular nut consumers (2.9 g/day). Nut exposure was measured at the be ginning of the study with a validated food frequency questionnaire or with an ana lytical tool for the characterisation of phenolic compounds. In addition, cogni tive decline was measured using the Mini Mental State Examination test. Researchers found that, from 119 sub jects, 38 participants experienced cogni tive decline, 28 from the nonnut con sumers group and 10 from the nut GAINING weight or adding muscle can be just as difficult for some people as losing weight is for others. But according to Healthline, simply adding certain foods to your diet can make weight gain not only more effective, but al so healthy. And they have put together a list of healthy addi tions with numerous benefits. * Protein shakes or smooth ies can be highly nutritious and help with weight gain. Experts recommend making your own as shop bought alternatives can be packed with sugar and lack nutrients. Making your own also allows you to pick your own flavours and ingredients. For this you will need to buy a whey protein of your choice, and the choices are then endless. Here’s one tasty example which can be combined with 470ml of milk or an alternative (like almond milk). Chocolate banana nut shake combine 1 banana, 1 scoop of chocolate whey protein and 1 tbsp of peanut butter. * Milk is a great weight gainer or muscle builder. It provides a good balance of proteins, carbs

POP superstar and actress Mariah Carey has taken to Twitter to thank the city of Malaga for livening up the Christmas lighting of the central Larios street with her well-known festive hit ‘All I want for Christmas is you,’ one of the themes that the town hall has included in the daily presentation of their world-famous lights backed by seasonal music. After seeing a video of a fan, on the social media platform, in which you can see part of the Christmas light show of the Malaga capital, Carey commented ‘Gracias, Malagaaa!!!’ followed by heart-eyed emojis. A Taste of Christmas Turkey & Cranberry Meatballs IT’S time to get our Christmas taste buds tingling… ready for the festive delights to come. A plate of these as tapas with a glass of mulled wine makes a lovely party snack. Or a bowlful can make a main meal, stir through some pasta if you like, it’s your supper! First of all get a small saucepan on a low heat and add a handful of dried cranberries and cover with some cold water, a table spoon of icing sugar and some orange zest. Leave to simmer away until reduced to a thick sauce, then leave to cool. Mix 1kg of turkey mince, zest of a lemon, grated parmesan, salt, pepper, torn basil leaves and finely chopped dried cranberries, then form into meatballs, the size of your choice! Leave in the fridge until you want to cook them. To cook melt some butter with some olive oil in a large pan, add the meatballs, cook until nice and caramelised then put in an oven dish. Give the pan a wipe out with kitchen roll and put back on the heat. Add a glass of red wine, reduce a little, then add a glass of chicken stock, reduce for an other minute then add the cranberry mix ture. Bring to the boil then pour over the

DAVID WORBOYS THINGS don’t always go to plan. They certainly did not for Malcolm. The small firm in Oxfordshire where I had my first job after leaving school had engaged a new 19year old filing clerk to start at 9am on a Monday morning. Malcolm turned up at a quarter to 10 explaining that he had missed the bus. Before 10 o’clock he had a nosebleed and had to retire to the ‘Gents’ for about 10 minutes. During the morning he spilt his cof fee on the desk of one of the man agers and later walked backwards in to a filing cabinet knocking a vase of chrysanthemums off the top. We asked if he’d like to join us for a pub lunch but he said he had some shop ping to do. After lunch he returned 10 minutes late to the office with bruises on one arm and cuts to the other. It tran spired that Malcolm had fallen down a manhole after coming out of a to bacconist’s. He settled down to an in duction with the Senior Partner’s sec retary which went well enough until he was stung by a wasp. This set off a

The festive season has been sneaked forward, in the hope that a twinkle of tinsel and a snatch of the ‘Away in a Manger /Silent Night’ loop will drive us all into a spending frenzy. Hold firm! The small island of La Gomera, where we’ve taken root, was Christmas consumer nonsense free until recently. The snowball’s rolling now though. Reindeers, Christmas trees, the Coca Cola Father Christmas; you name it, we’ve got it all twinkling at us from late November onwards. Canarian Christmas before was family dinner on the 24th, midnight mass and a day off work on the 25th. Presents weren’t given until Reyes on January 6 and it was Baltasar, Melchor and Gaspar who brought them. Father Christmas didn’t feature then, but he’s extended his flight path to include us and we must spend accordingly. It makes for a long festive season, tough on both pocket and liver. While the UK’s undecorating on 12th night (6/1), we’re lurching into party mode, with our little church across the valley scene of an excellent three-day bash, involving a danced procession with songs, local drums and castanets.

My secretary should have come out and explained but we had a bit of a crisis. Come on in and I’ll tell you what hap pened.” I had a most enjoyable three years with this company, gaining two pro
motions, travelling all over Europe and making a couple of lifelong friends. Had I decided to leave that of fice 30 seconds earlier I would have missed all this. This was my true ‘Slid ing Doors’ experience. Then there are the near escapes. If I have nine lives, there are probably only two left. Some of the close shaves were also a matter of several seconds. But that’s another story.

AFRICANS ARRIVE: People on the beach ran and swam out to help. The priest, dancers, musicians and crowd dance up and across the valley, over a water course and up steep steps to the small Los Reyes church and its square. It’s the oldest church in the valley, hidden behind a cliff face so that passing pirates didn’t see and plunder it. Small kioscos and their wares are winched up a few days beforehand, as is the sound equipment. The instruments for the salsa, merengue and cumbia ‘orquestas’ who’ll keep
everyone dancing are winched up later. We eat ñames (yams) and kid wth hot mojo sauce, drink local wine, do loads of talking and dancing till very late, then brave the steps down. The few incidents of plummeting drunks generally end well. Falling from the Plaza de Los Reyes may be more likely when drunk, but is probably survivable, I’ve observed. Canarian traditions are alive and well and there’ll be similar celebrations on all islands. Meanwhile, in the midst of the pre-Christ-
mas hype, Africans arrive in pateras. There’s a 20 per cent increase this year in these small, inadequate boats, whose owners charge exorbitant prices to desperate people. Twenty-four unfortunates, (three children, three babies and 10 men and eight women), arrived exhausted off the Gran Canaria coast yesterday while everyone there was enjoying a 27º Canarian December beach day. They struggled off the small boat into the water, watched by astonished beachgoers. What happened next reflects the real Christmas message. Forget glitter and pointless acquisition. People on the beach ran and swam out to help. They took the weak and the babies, helped everyone, to shore; wrapped them in their clothes and beach towels; some ran to a nearby supermarket to buy milk and bottles for the babies and food and drink for the rest; fed them, wept and stayed with them until (and after) the authorities arrived. So... Merry Christmas, Peace and Goodwill to everyone!

FAKE news is all around us. We can’t escape it. It’s everywhere. First up, Trump’s own fake news all his fake promises. Is there any state ment Trump’s made which he’s not blithely gone back on? Which reminds me of the old joke: ‘How can you tell when Donald Trump is lying?’ ‘His lips move!’ But Trump’s lies aren’t the only prob lem. It’s the millions who swallow them ‘bigly’ who really matter. During his election campaign he produced a letter that said he would be the ‘healthiest in dividual ever elected to the presiden cy.’ But the doctor named as its author later said Trump had written the letter himself. When the next analysis of Trump lies is published it’ll doubtless run into volumes. Which reminds me, too, of an old Two Ronnies’ joke that goes like this. Ronnie Corbett: “Two Ear, Nose and Throat specialists say they’re very wor ried about what they saw when they

This concerns the former MP, Harvey Proctor. He’s to receive compensation and costs from the Met ropolitan Police of nearly £900,000 over their botched VIP sex abuse in quiry costing £2.5m into false allega tions of paedophilia and child murder by the fantasist ‘Nick’. You’ll recall the officer in charge not only got promoted but a goldplated pension plus all accompanying perks, such as free truncheons for life. We’re never going to be fakenews free, that’s obvious. But wouldn’t it be nice if in 2020 and, in fact, the whole of the next decade there could be a bit more truthfulness. On the part of
politicians, celebrities, basically, anyone in the public eye. Wishful thinking, I know... Now, I’m not demanding a re turn to early closing days and the rein troduction of the Austin Allegro. But sometimes, I still think I’ve been ab ducted in my sleep and, on awakening, find myself on the planet Vacuousa or biting the star Gormlessia. My, how I enjoy getting grumpy! BARRY DUKE THE title of that 1961 West End musi cal has been used to express frustra tion and disbelief countless times by folk reacting to events that are so mindblowingly idiotic that they are enough to induce a feeling that the earth is being spun on its axis by fools and fanatics. I have used it frequently. And I did so again when I read with mounting incredulity of a war of words that’s erupted in America over a fastfood chain called ChickFilA. First, a bit of background. ChickFil A was started in 1946 by a fundamen talist Christian called S Truett Cathy. It became so successful that it launched a charity that gave bucketloads of cash to organisations actively cam paigning against gays and samesex marriage. One of those organisations was the Salvation Army. The result was that LGBT communi ties across America began boycotting what they called ‘Jesus Chicken’ out lets, and its premises were frequently picketed by gay protesters and their heterosexual supporters. Then in midNovember ChickFilA,

Things then took a really bizarre turn when leading US evangelist Franklin Graham, demanding to know what the hell was going on, called
ChickFilA’s CEO, Dan Cathy, and got an assurance that the food chain ‘re mains committed to its Christian val ues.’ That, said Mat Staver, head of a far rightwing organisation called Liberty Counsel, was a lie. He bellowed: ‘While Dan Cathy may say the compa ny has the same values, the compa ny’s statements and actions tell a dif ferent story. Franklin, you have done a
huge disservice by not doing more in vestigation into ChickFilA’s betrayal and capitulation to the LGBT agenda.’ Others then piled in, claiming that the company had abandoned its reli gious ethos. Commentators even sug gested that Christians ought now to boycott the company. I spent a lot of time trying to get to the truth of the matter and discovered that one of Staver’s accusations
against ChickFilA that it had already given money to Covenant House, an organisation he thoroughly disap proves of was indeed true. But what Stavers said about the in ternational charity was a blatant lie. He described it as ‘a radical LGBTQ ac tivist organisation that celebrates ho mosexuality, transgenderism, and the entire LGBTQ agenda.’ Covenant House is, in fact, a CATHOLIC organisation that does amazingly good work among the homeless. To accuse it of being an LGBT activist organisation is as stupid as branding all Muslims terrorists. Sure, Covenant House does support homeless gay and transgender people. It makes no secret of the fact, saying that ‘while Covenant House is not an LGBTQ organisation, any institution serving homeless young adults is aware that anywhere from 20 to 40 per cent of their clients are LGBTQ.’ And why are so many young LGBT people homeless? Because they are generally evicted from their homes by families who fall for the hateful rhetoric spewed out by outfits such as Liberty Counsel. I stopped supporting the Salvation Army back in the 1970s. Shame it took ChickFilA so long to do the same.

What’s new pussycat? JAGUAR has unveiled a new look for the com pany’s sportiest model the flagship FType two seater sports car has been given a revamp and facelift by new design director Julian Thomson in a bid to boost sales. The entrylevel FType comes in both coupe and convertible form and is powered by a 2.0 litre inline fourcylinder petrol engine, it de velops 300 horsepower, accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds and will keep going un til it hits 155mph. With an average fuel con sumption of 34.9mpg and CO2 emissions at 184g/km. Top of the range is the upgraded allwheel dri ve FType R which replaces the previous and more expensive SVR. Propelled by a mighty 575 horsepower, 25hp more than the prefacelift ex ample, the 5.0litre V8 accelerates from 0 to 60mph in just 3.5 seconds with a top speed of up to 186mph. As well as a ‘comprehensively uprated chassis’ the FType is available with new wider 20inch 10 spoke wheels in gloss black with diamondturned finish, and new adaptive dampers, springs, antiroll bars and stiffer rear knuckles and ball joints ‘deliv ering even greater agility and responsiveness.’ There are deployable door handles and air vents. These design tweaks allow the FType to evolve with an even more muscular presence and ‘a purer, more sculpted and assertive ex pression.’ In the cockpit, it also receives a new 12.3inch interactive and reconfigurable driver display of fering different options including full map and a large central rev counter among others. There is a touchscreen infotainment system with Merid ian audio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the ability to upgrade softwareovertheair. The first new FTypes are available to order now from around €64,030 and €121,240.

The CCCA Gets Festive! I
T’S been a wonderful week celebrating Christmas, people and cars for the CCC of A. The week started off in grand style with the Club’s annual Christmas Party and dinner, held at ‘ B ase’ which is, of course, Treetops Restaurante at El Chaparral Golf in Mijas Costa. Well over 100 Club members turned out to enjoy the evening and were greeted with cava and canapés on arrival. As is traditional with the CCCA, this was to be a ‘Black Tie and Posh Frocks’ affair and it was marvellous to see everyone, particularly the elegant ladies, so beautifully attired! After welcome drinks, superb traditional Christmas fayre was served although numerous menu options gave a fine choice to all diners. Entertainment was provided by the fabulous Karen Cooper who had the party-goers up and dancing in no time. Speeches were kept to a minimum and the revelry continued until the small hours, most everyone feeling that this was one of the best CCCA Xmas parties ever! On the Saturday of last weekend, the CCC A then moved on to organise its special Christmas-themed classic car run and partylunch. A round 90 C C C A members gathered at V enta L os M orenos near Alhaurin to start the Christmas Run, as it’s called, at 11.00 on a beautiful, warm, sun-filled morning under blue skies. There were to be prizes for the bestdressed Christmas themed crew and also the best turned out Christmas themed car. Most members made the effort to join in the spirit of it all and some marvellous elves, fairies and Santas graced the breakfast area before the start. Likewise, great efforts were made to turn classic and modern-classic cars into something resembling Santa’s sleigh although not all were capable of flight! Bemused customers at Los Morenos not with the Classic Car Club must have wondered what on earth was going on! Judges were appointed to make informed (!) decisions relating to the potential winners of the competitions and all were easily bribeable! The route itself was very enjoyable with some spectacular scenery and roads and what a sight these beautiful cars were, whizzing along the countryside bedecked in Christmas decorations and driven by elves

LUNCH: The atmosphere was terrific. Members got into the spirit of things. and Santas! I’ve no idea what the collective noun is for a group of lady Santas, but they all looked quite gorgeous! From Venta Los Morenos the route headed for Coin, turning down the A-355 towards Pizarra, joining the new road to by-pass Villafranco de Guadalhorce. Heading then towards A rdales on the A -357 the route turned up towards Alora Norte passing by Venta los Conejitos and taking the stunning but winding and narrow road up through to Carratraca. On in to Ardales where a coffee stop was arranged just upon entering this lovely little town. This was also a great opportunity for photos of the cars and the crews in their festive apparel, some of which

A fter coffee crews headed along the beautiful and scenic road to El Burgo, then heading back to Coin and on up to Mijas and a well deserved lunch at Valparaiso restaurant where cava and canapés awaited. A marvellous Christmas lunch (yes, another!) was served and live music was provided, getting everyone up dancing and enjoying the fun. The atmosphere was terrific and
further improved when the prizes of Champagne and chocolates were presented! Everyone agreed that this had been a truly marvellous Christmas celebration week for the CCC of A and all look forward to resuming the fun when Club events restart in January. There was a late team change for Arsenal as Hector Bellerin tweaked a hamstring in the warm up, and he was replaced by Ainsley MaitlandNiles at rightback. Sead Kolasinac took MaitlandNiles’ place on the bench. The teams came out to a full derby atmosphere at the London Stadium as ‘I’m forever bubbles’ rang out around the ground. The game saw West Ham spring to life early on, Noble and Ander son drove down the middle and set up Antonio, who lashed high over the bar. Then they came again and forced a corner down the right. Torreira was smacked upside the head and it was a free kick, though Cresswell took a shot anyway and he hit the post. It was all West Ham mainly in the first half as Arsenal looked out of sorts and on the 38th minute West Ham struck the first goal of the game when Cresswell won a corner down the left. He knocked it long. Rice flicked the ball towards Fornals, to the right of the sixyard box. He dinked it back in the box Ogbonna wanted it the most, and his desire won out. His header, towards the top left, twanged off MaitlandNiles’

The keeper had absolutely no chance with the shot and Arsenal were in to the lead from nowhere. The scoring wasn’t over just three minutes later Aubameyang back heeled a pass down the right, releasing Pepe into a little bit of space. Pepe checked and chipped a delicate cross back towards the striker, who had kept moving. Aubameyang bicycle kicked into the bottom right, keeper Martin got a hand on the shot, but could n’t keep it out. 13 Arsenal. Arsenal had turned it right round to burst West Ham’s bubble.

Fans felt robbed MANCHESTER UNITED went to Manches ter City for the first Manchester Derby at the weekend which United came out 12 winners although City fans thought they were robbed. Although former Premier League ref eree Dermot Gallagher believed that all three penalty decisions made during the derby were correct but agreed the visi tors could have seen Andreas Pereira set off as he reviewed the game on TV.
United emerged victorious in their trip across the city to the Etihad Stadium, with Marcus Rashford tucking home from the penalty spot and Anthony Mar tial doubling his side’s advantage just six minutes later. However, City fans were cheesed off that two penalty shouts were turned down by referee Anthony Taylor, as they perceived Fred and Victor Lindelof to have been guilty of handballs.

Joshua regains world title ANTHONY JOSHUA is again one of heavyweight boxing’s top players after an easy points win over Andy Ruiz Jr in Saudi Arabia on Saturday night. AJ retook possession of his former WBA ‘Super,’ IBF, WBO and IBO belts he lost in June when replacement op ponent Ruiz scored a shock seventhround KO victory over an under par AJ in New York City. Joshua left nothing to chance in this return bout, coming in lighter on his feet, popping a stinging left jab on Ruiz and taking advantage of every inch of a huge 22foot ring. Ruiz had the quicker hands but his slower feet were un able to satisfactorily close the distance on the chal lenger. Despite cutting Ruiz over the left eye early on, Joshua never got greedy,
never allowed micro success es to break his focus. Every solid right hand or left hook he landed was followed up by a skip out of range and back to the jab. Ruiz’s weight is a point of contention. Coming in at a chubby 20stoneplus did not help the American of Mexi can descent. Entering the biggest stage with a belly draped over his shorts was not a good look. VALENCIA’S Rodrigo scored the only goal as they beat hosts Ajax Ams terdam 10 on Tuesday to finish top of Champion’s League Group H and knock out the Dutch title winners from this sea son’s competition. The strike on the 24th minute from the Brazilian born Spain international saw Valencia finish ahead of Chelsea in Group H. Ajax, who had a great runin last season’s com petition with their giant slaying run from the early preliminary rounds right through to the semifinal, needed only to draw their last group game to ad vance to the last16, al though Valencia put paid to that whilst they looked flat and lazy going down to the Spanish side, who ended with 10 men after the sending off of Gabriel Paulista in injury time. It was an unexpected win by Valencia away from home but a fantastic result for Spanish football as the club go through to the final stages, although the game was marred by Valencia centre back Paulista getting sent off for an attempted head butt in a scrappy melee deep into time at the end.
