After speaking to a countless number of people sleeping on the streets in Palma, Stephen discovered that it was neither food or money that they wanted most at winter, but warmth. Taken back by the recurring answer, Stephen has since dedicated himself to handing out woolly hats and blankets to rough sleepers. Stephen has gone one step

further after stumbling upon a British charity named ‘Sleep Pod’ who provide innovative shelters that are designed to protect rough sleepers, keeping them warm, dry and most importantly safe. Moved by their cause, Stephen has decided to raise money to purchase the pods and distribute them to those that need them the most.

Speaking to Stephen, an electrician by trade, he expressed his desire to raise awareness about the plight of the homeless as “there is absolutely no need for the situation to continue in Mallorca.” His work often brings him to luxury yachts where he has seen first hand the amount of waste that is accumulated and

could be used to help those on the streets. Add vacant homes and boats at winter, and the huge amount of food leftover at restaurants, he believes a lot more can be done to help. Stephen has so far raised over €1,000 which will be used to buy 37 pods that are already on their way to the island. Howev-

er, according to the Consell de Mallorca, this year there are an estimated 650 people living on the streets. The sleep pods have proven to be a lifesaver for many people across Europe, being insulated, self warming, both wind and rain proof as well as being easy to use, providing an increased temperature of almost 20°C. Stephen also plans to spend a night on the streets once the sleep pods arrive where Euro Weekly News will keep you updated on his journey. United we stand IN an act to mark World AIDS Day, a red ribbon has been hung outside of Palma Court. Members of the council united in the capital on Sunday, December 1 to unveil the bow, standing in solidarity in the fight against HIV and to commemorate those who have died from an AIDS-related illness. Mayor Jose Hila reaffirmed the city council’s commitment to the Paris Declaration, which was approved unanimously in September 2018, and guaranteed the introduction of measures to end this health epidemic. Hila announced that they will continue to carry out initiatives for their ‘Pisa stigma’ campaign, where a space will be created within institutions to strengthen primary health care and to eliminate the stigma that is attached to people living with HIV. UNITED: Members of Palma City Council unveiling a ribbon to mark World AIDS Day. of the Association for the Fight against AIDS in the Balearic Islands (ALAS), joined the presentation, stating that by 2030, their aim is to “have 95 per cent of people diagnosed with zero per cent of stigma.” The act was followed by an ALAS gala at Teatre Xesc Forteza, where members of the public were invited to watch performances on stage and view an exhibition by Idoia Fradejas, who collected photographs and testimonies of people living with the ill-

ness. Here, the ALAS prize was awarded to Sebastià Mascaró for his dedication to education through art which pays special attention to the most invisible groups. Founded in 1988, World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day whose objective is to increase awareness, fight prejudice and improve education across the globe. Statistics indicate that in 2018 in Spain, 30 per cent of people with HIV are unaware that they have the illness and 50 per cent of the di-

agnoses are delayed. Today, thanks to research and a new generation of medicine, it has been possible to keep those infected with a good level of health, which has resulted in a marked improvement in their quality of life. However, the pandemic continues to grow, and in response, ALAS has launched pioneering projects throughout the Balearic Islands to provide clear information about the issue and to alleviate the prejudice that is held towards the HIV infection.

Most beautiful ALCUDIA and Pollensa have been named as two of ‘the most beautiful villages in Spain’ at an annual conference held in Zamora. Organised by the Association of the Most Beautiful Villages in Spain, 94 municipalities across the country were recognised for their cultural interest as well as their commitment to the environment and historical heritage. Established in 2011, the association aims to promote and preserve the natural and rural legacy of different geographical areas across Spain that have a lower level of industrialisation and population. The list seeks to give visibility to a selection of tourist destinations with initiatives that serve to boost the promotion of the municipalities. The coveted conference once again included Alcudia and Pollensa, where the organisers hope to erect a sign in the two municipalities, signifying their inclusion into the list. It is understood that the association are set to further promote all of those included in the list in order to attract visitors to Spain from other European countries.

A PROPOSAL to offer public transport discounts for car users who deregister their vehicles has been approved by the government. Discounts will be calculated according to the type of vehicle and its environmental categorisation, and is set to be introduced once the new concessions for bus services are in place.

Bogus homes THREE men who conned tenants in Sa Pobla have been taken to court in Inca. An investigation found that the men rented out various properties to individuals on Calle Goleta, taking a deposit and a succession of rental payments from their new tenants. However, a few months later, bailiffs showed up at their doors and explained that the homes had in fact been repossessed and were now owned by a bank. Although each of the tenants had paid their rent on time, none had signed a rental agreement, so they were forced to vacate from the premises immediately. Recently, the Consell de Mallorca revealed that they have received a large number of complaints from residents about bogus rentals of properties on the island. Many of the scammers advertise homes that do not exist, taking money from prospective tenants before disappearing.

Butterfly effect THE very first sighting of a blue tiger butterfly in Europe was recorded in Mallorca this year. A resident from Santa Eugènia spotted the striking specimen lying in her garden, taking it to specialists after it had reminded her of travels in India. Samuel Pinya, Professor of Biology and Principal Investigator at the UIB, explained that it is difficult to determine how the butterfly arrived on the island, believing that it could have been transported with plants or even released at a celebratory event. Pinya said the discovery was complete luck, as if it was not for the quick thinking resident, the butterfly may have been thrown into the trash. The blue tiger butterfly is a distinctive species usually found in southern Asia. They feed mostly on toxic plants and spend long periods resting in sheltered areas during winter.

After the Spanish government issued a warning of the serious possibility of a terror attack against Spanish citizens travelling to the camps last week, the 11 volunteers were forced to come back, receiving a warm welcome home at Palma’s Son Sant Joan airport. The group were made up of residents from Son Espases, Son Llàtzer and Inca and included three urologists, two anaesthetists, four nurses and an electromedical engineer. ing has only stopped “planes full of people who want to support those that need help.” Dozens of Spaniards work in the camps situated in south-western Algeria, while many others travel each year to visit Saharawi families and friends. The camps house some 100,000 people who have been displaced, with Islamic State extremists operating in the region.

THE Guardia Civil have found over €38,000 in cash buried on a rural farm in Muro. The discovery formed part of a major anti-drug operation in Spain which has so far arrested 33 people in Mallorca, Barcelona, Lleida and Huesca who belonged to a criminal gang. These individuals were responsible for trafficking huge amounts of narcotics into the Balearic Islands through cars travelling on ferries. The group supplied drugs to dealers throughout the island and had contacts in

Colombia who provided them high purity cocaine that was cut down at a home laboratory in Lloseta. During the operation, which has so far seized over 14.5 kilos of cocaine, one kilo of MDMA and 3.5 kilos of hashish, officers also found over €60,000 in cash stashed in a car in Mallorca. Once their method of transportation was revealed to authorities, the Guardia Civil carried out a search of a vehicle departing from the Port of Alcudia, finding seven kilos of cocaine hidden inside a secret compartment.

PLAYA DE PALMA: Citizens will be able to enjoy a vehicle-free space.

A SECTION of the road which travels along the beach of Playa de Palma will prohibit cars from 10am to 2pm every Sunday from December 8 to February 23. As reported by the Association of Hoteliers of Playa de Palma, the closure, which will run from Balneario 15 to the Torrent dels Jueus, has been introduced so that residents can move around in a vehicle-free space and enjoy the area in a peaceful and safe way. With support of Palma City Council, the initiative aims to encourage people to walk and play sports, where activities will be organised for the community during the closure. This will include a Nordic Walking Day on December 15 which leaves from Palma Aquarium at 10.30am. Isabel Vidal, the President of the association, has indicated their objective is for “families to walk in front of the sea, have breakfast on terraces and eat at the restaurants in the area.”

ASSAULT: Several staff were assaulted at Son Espases Hospital.

Unwarranted attack A MAN has been arrested for assault after launching an attack on staff at the Emergency Unit of Son Espases Hospital. As reported by the Union of Nursing Technicians (SAE), the incident took place on November 26, after a patient retrieved a razor from his pocket and began to cut himself. When nurses tried to intervene, the patient assaulted and threatened to kill them, subsequently breaking the wrist of one of the hospital’s security guards. The SAE have released a statement, stating that “it is alarming that verbal or physical aggressions against health professionals continue.” They ask that the hospital’s administration urgently develops measures to put an end to the abuse.

Fugitives found THE National Police have arrested three fugitives who were wanted for crimes in Germany, Switzerland and Poland. An investigation was launched after European arrest warrants were issued and evidence suggested that the three men were living in Mallorca. Officers from the National Police’s group specialised in tracing international fugitives were then sent to the island to investigate and execute the warrants. In collaboration with police units in Germany, Switzerland and Poland, the officers focused their efforts on finding the men who were wanted for crimes that included robbery, drug trafficking, bribery, assault and fraud. One of the three men was on Poland’s most wanted list, having an extensive criminal record that dated back to 2001. As a member of a drugs gang in Warsaw, he had previously been arrested for carrying an automatic rifle, later committing highly violent robberies and was known to have paid thousands of euros in bribes to police to avoid being arrested. In 2015, the man went off the radar until the beginning of this year, after Polish

INVESTIGATION: The National Police collaborated with police units in Germany, Switzerland and Poland. authorities suspected that he was working at a construction company in Mallorca. The specialist group of officers placed the man under surveillance at his home, and by luck, an accidental fire broke out at an adjacent building, causing the man to go out onto his balcony where he was then seen by police. They blocked the exit, but he wouldn’t leave the apartment so the police then obtained a warrant to enter the premises and proceeded to detain him. The fugitive sought by the Swiss authorities was wanted for drug trafficking

where he had been sentenced to 20 years in prison for his crimes, but fled before he was jailed. When he realised that he was being followed by police in his car in Palma de Mallorca, he attempted to drive off with his wife and daughter but was detained after a chase. The man sought by the German authorities was wanted for fraud and illegal immigration and was captured as he was leaving his home in Calvia. The three men have been detained in prison by a court order, where it is expected that they will be extradited.

SANTANYI, Campos and Ses Salines have joined forces to demand that a new desalination plant is built to guarantee a supply of drinking water in the municipalities. Desalination is the removal of salt and impurities from seawater to produce a fresh supply suitable for drinking and irrigation. Through a reverse osmosis system, seawater is passed through a pre-treatment filter that removes large and small particles. Maria Pons, the mayor of Santanyi, has presented her request for the new plant to Joana Maria Garau, the Director General of Water Resources of the Ministry of Environment. Pons asks that a plant is built to improve the quality of water in the municipality, which is currently poor, through a system that will “help raise the water levels of the wells to allow for a potable supply.”

Pons states that Ses Salines and Campos do not have poor quality water but that Mayors Juan Rodriguez and Xisca Porquer are concerned about the issue affecting their municipalities in the future and are aware that Santanyi’s water supply is inadequate.

The city council of Santanyialso asks that the government speeds up their project to connect the island’s water network to Sa Marineta so that a pipeline can also reach the municipality. Work has already been carried out to connect Maria de la Salut to Petra and

is expected to extend to Manacor during this term. Whilst the work is being completed, the council has launched initiatives to provide residents with better quality water such as the construction of a pipeline from Santanyi to Es Llombards.

Shutting up shop

A LONGSTANDING business in Inca has closed its doors after 74 years in business. Asinca is well-known on the island for manufacturing and selling leather goods, however over the years its sales have decreased dramatically. The closure of the store will mean the loss of six jobs, with the three-storey building on Calle Sineu now being put up for sale. Jepi Corró, the store’s manager, expressed his regret over the closure, stating that “it is a historical firm and we are like a family, but the situation could no longer be supported with a business that had stopped being profitable for many years.” Corró attributes the lack of sales to the absence of tourist excursions to the area, the rise of digital purchases and changes to consumer habits, where people “do not look at the quality of the item and only at its price.” Councillor Miguel Ángel Cortés said that “the closure of the company is sad news, but that it signifies the challenge to adapt to new trends.” In recent weeks, three local shops have closed in the town, highlighting the difficulties that small and medium sized businesses face. Antony’s restaurant in Inca will also close down at the end of the year after 24 years of trading.

What to do in the Imminent eviction event of an emergency in Spain DESTITUTE: The council has come under fire for the condition of the Camp Redo district.

PA L M A C i t y C o u n c i l has filed complaints against seven people for squatting at public properties in the Camp Redo district. The Municipal Board of Housing, which is responsible for managing the homes, initially asked that each of the individuals received a fine under

the agreement that they would vacate the council owned properties within three months. It is understood that this offer was refused by one of the illegal tenants, which has forced the case to go to trial on December 10. Both the council and the Balearic Institute of Housing are proprietors of many of the buildings in the district.

Some are rented and others have been left vacant, with many being boarded up as they are in such a poor condition that they require urgent reform. On several occasions residents have denounced the council for their neglect of the properties which are considered to be an ‘eye-sore’ for the community.

LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. In Spain there are in effect two groups which most people would understand as being ‘the police.’ The National Police (Policía Nacional) who have jurisdiction in the towns and cities and the Guardia Civil outside the towns and cities. The Local Police are employed by town halls; they basically deal with property found, and enforce local laws. Whilst they have a power of arrest, when exercised they must take the arrested person to the National Police or Guardia Civil according to where the crime took place. National Police and the Guardia Civil deal with all crimes, missing persons etc in their jurisdiction. The National Police also deal with all applications for immigration paperwork, NIEs, EU Citizens Registration and for non EU nationals, Residencia, etc. Throughput Europe the general number for all emergencies is 112. In Spain the operators speak English, French, German and Italian, in addition to Spanish and will liaise with the emergency services when the caller does not speak Spanish. No area code is needed and the number can be called from any phone, including mobiles even those without a Spanish SIM card or any credit. You can also fax or SMS 112.

The 24 hours national emergency numbers for Spanish speakers are: 091 - police, 061 - health emergencies 080 - firefighters. By calling 902 102 112, but only when the perpetrator is unknown, one can give details of certain crimes, including:- burglaries, car theft, theft or loss of documents or belongings. The service is available in English from 9am to 9pm seven days a week, and from 9am to 3pm in French, German and Italian. Having given details of the crime, you must go to the National Police station which you nominate, within 48 hours to make the report using the information supplied on the telephone. In the case of robbery, where threat or force has been used, victims should call 112 at the time for police attendance, or go directly to the police station which covers that area to make a report.

Sad farewell to David the Dogman Costa del Sol dog legend and much-loved member of the Euro Weekly team, David the Dogman, sadly passed away last Friday, after a lengthy illness. David boasted an avid fan base as an EWN columnist, sharing a lifetime of experience in the dog training industry. ORIGINALLY from Nottingham, he was an acknowledged leading behav­ iourist and people canine educator. An Honorary Life Member of the British Police Services Canine Associa­ tion, he was the administrator for the Association’s Forum. “Dogs have always been my life,” he once confessed. David started his career in Israel in 1953, with the Israeli Border Police K9 Section. He was involved in all forms of dog training, including air­sea res­ cue, air scent work, and drug and ex­ plosives detection. When he returned to England, he joined the family busi­ ness. The name ‘dogman’ comes from the police as they always say: “Get the dogman,” David revealed during an interview. “That’s how the name de­ veloped.” At 48, he retired to Spain and with the support of his devoted wife, Susan, dedicat­ ed his full attention to the second love of his life, dogs. The Dogman used all his experience and invented the silent dog training system that centres on what he called ‘silent socialisation.’ His unique style carried an effective, time­tested approach. “It takes 10 min­ utes to have any dog un­ der my complete control, and this includes showing its owner how to handle it.” David emphasised that the biggest difference be­ tween his style and those used by others was his passive approach. “Too many trainers use aggressive training methods that are out of date. I delve into the psy­ chological side of train­ ing.” David was a guest on Spanish sport radio sta­ tion, Onda Cero Radio and Gibraltar GBC for many years, appeared on many TV shows, and wrote for publications around the world, as well as a weekly column for EWN. Nottinghamshire. Four years later, David founded The Nottinghamshire Hospice, after being approached by medical members of a Freemasons Masonic Lodge to head a group to establish a cancer hospice in Nottingham. He later became founder of a Ma­ sonic Lodge in Spain having been in­ volved in Freemasonary in London and Nottingham for over 40 years. He also helped form an action group to help retired people on the Costa del Sol who had been ripped off by con­men purporting to be licensed Financial Advisors.

Knife attack THE National Police are investigating a knife attack in Palma which left two people seriously injured. According to the police, the incident took place in the early hours of Sunday morning (December 1) on Calle Manacor de Palma in

the Soledad district. E m e rg e n c y services rushed to the scene after reports of a violent attack, with paramedics finding two young people suffering from multiple stab wounds. The victims have since been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Son Espases University Hospi-

tal where it is reported by doctors that they are in a serious condition. The Homicide Group of the National Police have taken over the investigation in an attempt to determine the circumstances of the event that they consider to be a case of attempted murder.

Charity food collection SPECSAVERS ÓPTICAS Mallorca has today launched a campaign to collect nonperishable food for those in need. It has joined the PreChristmas Campaign, which is organised by Spain’s Federation of Food Banks (FESBAL) and operates nationwide through a network of 55 food banks. FESBAL distributes food via charities and associations to help the most vulnerable people in society and is currently supplying food to 1.5 million people. Specsavers Ópticas will be collecting food for them until the end of the year. Specsavers Ópticas in Santa Ponsa is collaborating with Mallorca’s Food Bank (Banco de Alimentos de Mallorca) to ensure the food donations get to those people who really need them. Vicious assault A MAN has been arrested after violently attacking a man during a night out in Magaluf. As reported by the National Police, the horrifying assault took place at Manos Bar on Camí de sa Porrassa in the early hours of Sunday morning (December 2). An employee, of Nigerian nationality, was busy working inside the bar’s bathroom, where his job was to offer clients colognes and towels. He was then approached by a man who asked if he sold drugs, responding politely that he was not a drug dealer and was simply at work. It was then that the accused launched a viscous attack, throwing a barrage of racial insults at the employee before picking up a smashed piece of glass from the sink and stabbing it into his neck. Green funding

THE European Investment Bank (EIB) has offered what is known as a green loan of €50 million to a consortium made up of Spanish electric utility company Iberdrola and Caja Rural de Navarra. The money is intended to fi­ nance the building of four new windfarms in Navarra which will be built between Cadreita and Valtierra. The work should see the employment of around 200 people and be completed in the first quarter of 2020 as part of an ongoing EU plan to increase renewable energy.

Another factor is cost, as the su­ permarkets are encouraged to charge more for their bags, it is as­ sumed that profits will go to charity but this is not mandatory and they decide what the ‘profit’ amount is.

LEGALLY SPEAKING Can they buy derelict house? We have had our property in Torrevieja for 30 years. The house next door has been emp­ ty for 20 years since the owner passed away and is now derelict. We have had squatters and oth­ er problems. When the last squatters left we paid to have it bricked up and put a new door on the roof. Netflix nasty AN apparently new scam has ap­ peared in the UK which could spread here into Spain concerning Netflix and hijacking of customer informa­ tion. A number of former subscribers to that platform have complained that once they have cancelled their subscriptions hackers have stolen their information to renew their ac­ counts (often upgrading them) using their details but with brand new lo­ gins. The scammers then sell the login details to others users at discounted prices and the old customers sud­ denly find themselves being charged on a monthly basis.

The bloc’s industrial sector contin­ ues to be a sore spot for EUR in­ vestors, with a slowdown in manu­ facturing starting to spread to other sectors. It’s not all been doom and gloom however, with the news that Ger­ many unexpected avoided a reces­ sion in Q3 offering some consolida­ tion for the single currency. Currency outlook: Brexit headlines and election speculation keeps GBP investors on their toes

TAKING ITS TOLL: The euro has struggled to hold its ground. this month if Eurozone data contin­ ues to underwhelm. Pound GBP/EUR: Up from €1.15 to €1.17 GBP/USD: Up from $1.28 to $1.29 The pound fluctuated over the past month, amidst a flurry of Brexit and political developments. In terms of Brexit there has been

plenty to keep GBP investors busy after Boris Johnson surprised every­ one by securing a new withdrawal deal, but subsequently failed to get this deal through parliament, result­ ing in the Brexit deadline being ex­ tended until January 31. Domestic politics proved to be equally tumultuous, with Sterling

being infused with further volatility as a snap election was called. So far in November we have also seen the pound face some head­ winds after two members of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee shocked markets by vot­ ing for an immediate rate cut. Looking ahead, the pound will grow increasingly sensitive to UK po­ litical headlines in the build up to the election on December 12. GBP investors generally favour a Conservative victory on hopes that a majority will help Johnson break the Brexit deadlock in parliament, so ex­ pect to see Sterling remain support­ ed so long as the Tories continue to poll well. US Dollar USD/GBP: Down from £0.78 to £0.77 USD/EUR: Steady at €0.90 The US dollar traded in a wide range over the past four weeks A persistent selling bias hung over

the ‘greenback’ through the last half of October as a risk­on mood and Federal Reserve rate speculation both limited the appeal of USD. However the US dollar’s fortunes improved in November, rallying hard through the first half of the month. This has been partly due to risk sentiment souring again amidst re­ newed US­China trade uncertainty. Some surprisingly resilient domes­ tic data and indications that interest rates are likely to remain on hold for some time also lent the US dollar support. Looking forward, the US dollar is likely to maintain its upwards mo­ mentum as global risks continue to build. On the other hand domestic poli­ tics could weigh on USD in the com­ ing weeks depending on how Don­ ald Trump’s impeachment inquiry plays out.

At least this particular toe rag complied with the specific criteria required to be classed as a terrorist. Yep, bit diffi­ cult to call that ‘a random non terrorist linked incident.’ Oddly I was going to write that it probably wouldn’t be long before the snowflakes began to crawl out bleating that he shouldn’t have been shot. Lo and behold the first to pop up was Cor­ byn. This man, who has no shame at all in his quest to appease just about any­ one whose votes may help his party, im­ mediately released a statement con­ demning the ‘shoot to kill’ policy. Oh really? Perhaps they should have ‘shot to injure,’ thereby giving this ani­ mal time to set off his suicide vest (the

As for our pathetic, utterly out of touch parole boards, although they claim to have had nothing to do with this fanatic’s release, they still have plenty to answer for. Most are made up of tin pot magistrates or tweedy local council members. These prisoners eat them alive. They have hours and hours banged up in cells, rehearsing the lines they’re going to give these naïve egotists when their hearings come up. Relying on these overpaid in­ competents to decide whether to allow fanatical homicidal maniacs back onto the streets is bordering on pure insanity. In this role I am re­ sponsible for encouraging and developing trade relationships between Danish and Spanish businesses. Denmark, despite having a relatively small popula­ tion, is an important trading partner for Spain, and both countries being members of the European Union facilitates this. Recently I was invited to Gourmet Cazorla in Linares, a company which produces liver pate. It was interesting to see the process from the initial raw in­ gredients to the finished product.

that comes in handy during the scorching Jaén summers. This

particular company was interest­ ed in trading with Denmark and of course I was happy to assist in my role. In addition I met with the mayor of Linares and was de­ lighted to hear his plans for the development of the local area. What made this visit particular­ ly interesting was that at the same premises they had an art gallery and I was asked to open the exhibition of Carline Crabbe, the daughter of Arne Hauge Sørensen, a leading Danish artist living in Malaga Province. It was a great honour to view all the paintings and attend the event afterwards. There are cer­ tainly some talented artists in An­ dalucia. I have to say that every day is different and I really do en­ joy my work at the Danish Con­ sulate. I would also recommend this area for a visit as the landscape is stunning, there are interesting villages and a huge number of old castles dating back many years.

I am still ‘in the system’ MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I WAS 70 this year so my English driving licence ran out. I decided I’d kill two birds with one stone and get a Spanish one which I applied for. Firstly I had to take a test. Well it’s not really a test as such ­ it’s a bit weird. I had to go to a clinic and play some kind of 1980’s video game which somehow I passed. I then had to go and have my eyes tested. I don’t wear glasses even for reading. The optician, I’m guessing they were an optician, put me in a room, turned the lights off and told me to put my hand over one eye and read the board which was about two miles away. It wasn’t re­ ally but it might as well have been be­ cause I couldn’t read it that well. I point­ ed out I don’t usually drive with one hand over my eye in the dark. I was in­ formed I had passed, but would need to wear glasses and it would be put on my licence and if I didn’t have them in the

car I’d get fined. So I went to another op­ tician and got two pairs of glasses ­ one for day and one for night. Simple eh? Of course not! These glasses were for distance so when I looked in my rear view mirror or at the dashboard it was blurred. So, I then had to have them made into bi­ focals. I’m now the proud owner of two pairs of glasses that don’t seem to make any difference. By the way, this was back in May. My birthday was in July so I reckoned I had given myself plenty of time to get my new licence. I went to a company that sends all the paperwork off to Trafico for you and that’s it ­ job done. They take your UK licence and give you a piece of paper which allows you to dri­ ve in Spain, but not anywhere else. So here’s the problem. It’s now December and I still don’t have my licence. I am ‘in the system’ and we all know that means I’m stuffed ‘til someone decides that my application gets attended to. I called the gestor that sent it for me and told them that I had friends that had applied after me who had got theirs back already. They said it was all to do with Brexit of course! Anyone got any idea how I can speed things up?

I am sure we would be up in arms if they started shooting people in overcrowded countries just to keep the numbers down. Has nobody considered a bird sanc­ tuary or something less drastic? I mean who are they harming? They look beautiful and I suppose are a bit of a tourist attraction. I am glad that they are looking at more humane ways to limit numbers. It would be great to see an update on the progress of the experiment to remove the eggs to see if it works better. Break the silence #ME TOO might seem like a new movement in the way that it has been brought to the forefront of the media’s attention. With high profile alleged culprits like Weinstein, Polanski, R Kelly and most recently Prince Andrew, it became ‘fresh’ news when actress Alyssa Milano helped kick off the current phase of the movement two years ago, she wanted to ‘give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem.’ However, activist Tarana Burke started the #MeToo campaign more than 10 years ago, her goal was ‘to spread a message for survivors: You’re heard, you’re understood.’ As they both made clear, #MeToo has always been about raising awareness of the impact of sexual violence. It’s also about creating change by empowering women through empathy and strength in numbers and visibly demonstrating how many women have survived sexual assault and harassment, particularly in the workplace. Milano states that a priority for the movement is changing laws surrounding sexual harassment and assault, for example creating protocols that give victims in all industries the ability to file complaints without fear of reprisal. It has been suggested that barriers to employment must be removed, such as the job requirement by some employers to sign non-disclosure agreements or other agreements that prevent an employee from talking about their employment publicly and legislation should be passed that bans these types of mandatory pre-employment terms. The movement has done a great job in highlighting this cause but by drawing it into the public eye has it also allowed once respected figures to be tried by the media?

Gender violence HELLO EWN, I find it very admirable that your paper in print and online has had such good coverage of stories sur­ rounding gender violence. It does shock me that there are SO many cases here, dare I ask if it is part of the culture? I hope not. However, I do notice that most re­ ported on are male against female violence and as a male victim of fe­ male violence in the past, I won­ dered if there are fewer cases of that in Spain or if it is something that is not talked about due to male pride. I also attended the Solidarity Race in Fuengirola and was blown away by the number of children in atten­ dance. Let’s hope that it is a good sign and we are teaching our chil­ dren from a young age that violence is unacceptable whether it is against men or women. Keep up the good work.

Holding out hope S C I E N T I S T S at UConn Health in Connecticut have made an impres­ sive step that could lead to a break­ through in the most dreaded form of breast cancer. Researchers at Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine were able to stop triple negative breast cancer from spreading in animals. A new drug being developed at UConn Health consists of a blocking protein that edits DNA and stops the cancer from spreading. It stopped the spreading process, called metas­ tasis, in animals and petri dish tu­ mours. Triple negative breast cancer is the most aggressive form of the dis­ ease and has the highest risks for spreading and proving fatal within a time frame of five years. A drug that targets defects in genes is already used to treat mus­ cular atrophy in children. The FDA approved the treatment in 2016 and

scientists at UConn say that their findings could mean the expensive drug could be repurposed to treat cancer. Around 10 to 20 per cent of women with breast cancer are diag­ nosed with the triple negative form. This subtype doesn’t respond to standard treatments due to a mole­ cular difference in the tu­ mour. Chemotherapy is effective, but on most oc­ casions the cancer comes back. The uncontrollable growth of tumours involves splicing factors, that are able to edit specific genes in the cells. They ‘cut’ some of the information out and replace it with faulty DNA. The team in Connecticut focused on the splicing factors, tar­ geting the bad editor that causes tu­ morous cells to grow. They found one, TRA2B, that was especially dense and practised

blocking the defective splicing fac­ tor. Blocking TRA2B prevented the breast cancer from spreading in both animals and petri dishes with this tu­ mour. Currently, there isn’t a drug that can be used on humans, but doctors can use the model as a base for developing a treatment faster. The drug used to treat childhood muscle wasting disease fixes defects in splic­ ing factors and

now, doctors hope the same can be done for cancer. How­ ever, doctors highlight that the process of developing a new drug can take any­ where from five to 15 years.

The power of kindness A NEW study by Penn Med­ icine at the University of Pennsylvania has resulted in some curious results. They found that kind ges­ tures from strangers could

boost well­being even more than a romantic relation­ ship. Small gestures from strangers, work colleagues and friends have been found to have a powerful

effect on people. Researchers at the presti­ gious academic medical centre followed the lives of 212 people with question­ naires at various times a

day. The study found that people who feel loved every day are healthier and happi­ er, whilst also being better at expressing their feelings. Love that is not romantic

was seen to have just as much positive influence on people’s lives. Simple acts such as help­ ing someone with their bags, smiling and greeting a stranger or sending some­ one a supportive text, trig­ gers deep emotions of feel­ ing loved and valued. Because these gestures come from different people and they are unexpected, it seems they have a stronger overall impact on happiness versus love from just one person. One researcher from Penn Medicine explained that feeling every day love is actually a much broader spectrum than what we tend to believe. Short, quick moments when you feel a connection and resonance with someone creates emo­ tions of well­being. The study was published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences and consisted in daily sur­ veys to find out how peo­

ple’s emotions fluctuated throughout their day. At first, a group of 52 people of varying ages were stud­ ied for one month, then an­ other group of 160 under­ graduate students for two months. Participants would re­ ceive questions via text six times a day at different in­ tervals. They were asked about their mood, any notable moments and their daily ac­ complishments. Generally, it was seen that feelings of love rose for participants as their day went on, and peo­ ple reported feeling happier after experiencing what they considered to be kind­ hearted gestures. Most surprising, was that these feelings of love didn’t depend at all on the partici­ pants’ romantic relationship status, with single people feeling just as happy. The findings could mean new techniques for mental health care and support.

Tournedos Rossini The most decadent, luxurious, voluptuous, steak you can get. THIS dish is really both simple, and crushingly luxurious at the same time. Take a good quality piece of fillet steak. It should be cut thick and flash fried both sides and come out pink if not rare, but you can tell your restaurant how you want it done. Meanwhile, some toasted Brioche is prepared and the steak is placed upon it and topped off with a slice of Foie Gras pate. It is then put under a grill and grilled until the pate starts to melt. Finally, a rich Madeira sauce is usually added with truffles and mushrooms, and cascaded over the top. All of this varies with every restaurant so while they agree in basics there may be chef’s al­ terations, there is no ‘official’ way to make this dish. Cheaper versions might not be so well made either.

It is generally accepted that Tournedos Rossini is a French steak dish, though the Swiss and Alsace Germans might ar­ gue this point. It was named af­ ter 19th century composer Gioachino Rossini. Its invention has several chefs vying for the accolade, French chef Marie­Antione Careme, Adelphe Duglere, or Auguste Escoffier from the Savoy Hotel. Tournedos Rossini became very fashionable in the 70’s, be­ fore fading away, but as it is so mouth­wateringly delightful, it is making a gentle comeback in first class restaurants. Profiled: the Spanish Buyer S T AT I S T I C S on the housing sector are out and the results have shed a light on the property ladder in Spain. In the last year, the purchase of a house as an investment represents 10 per cent of the total sales transactions in the country. A nother 10 per cent of transactions correspond to houses bought as a second residence. And far from these percentages is the purchase of houses meant to serve as the main domicile for a family, which in 2019 is a 78 per cent of all sales.

T his is how the analysis carried out by Fotocasa real estate portal describes the housing market in Spain. The aim of the study is to examine the profile of the S paniard that buys property as an investment and figure the reasons behind them acquiring this type of asset. The data shows that 70 per cent of Spaniards who bought as an investment in the last year, do so with the intention of renting the space on a longterm basis. The main reason is the high profitability that renting offers at the moment, with a lot of money to be

made by putting a house or apartment on the renting market. Property owners admit that renting gives fantastic returns that no other financial product is currently able to offer. I n addition to long-term renting, 15 per cent of people have bought with the intention of renting for short holiday stays and another 15 per cent do not intend to rent at all. A lot of Spanish people are very concerned for the risk of non-payment or squatters that can sometimes happen with renting. Of these investment properties, 82

per cent of them were second-hand houses and only 18 per cent were new builds. In addition, buyers would generally purchase close to where they lived, either in the same neighbourhood or in a different area. A s for the profile of people buying a second investment home, 59 per cent were men who are active in the real estate market. The men averaged at 45 years of age with a very high average income of €5,000 to €8,000 per month and in 50 per cent of cases they lived with their partners and children.

Compa­ nies in the real estate sector are taking a new direction and committing to the mod­ ernisation of housing con­ struction. Industrialised mod­ ules are already very extended in the UK and now, they’re gaining popularity among Spanish developers. Modules such as luxury bathrooms are being de­ signed and produced in large quantities by innova­ tive Spanish businesses. The client, specifies the style, finish and measurements of the bathroom, that is then replicated in mass. Once the build is ready, all that is left is the insertion of the com­

this service to both large­ and small­scale projects. A fully personalised kitchen or bath­ room module is designed, manufactured and produced in the time frame of 20 weeks. Clients are able to see the first mock­up module of their con­ cept just five weeks into the process. The fabrication process in­ cludes making a concrete mould to exact measurement specifications, installing the kitchen or bathroom, complet­ ing with accessories and finally a clean before the packaging of the module. Installation of these fully finished rooms is done with a crane that inserts the module into the building and the mod­ ules are placed on top of neo­ prene that protects the base. Developer AEDAS Home has just completed an order for 5,000 luxury bathrooms for all new builds until 2021. This will

mean the large­scale incorpo­ ration of industrialised bath­ rooms in Spanish homes. Their Operations Director has an­ nounced the decision is mod­ ernising the construction of houses, a sector he says has barely evolved in the last 100 years. The use of modules in place of builders individually in­ stalling bathrooms will mean multiple advantages for the sector and customers. The in­ novating idea will coexist with the traditional bathroom but will signify more polished re­ sults and a likely reduction of building deadlines. AEDAS Homes believe the new system will safeguard fixed costs until the end of the building work, at a time when the market is exposed to infla­ tion of construction costs. The company expect the system will help reduce any increase in the price of homes.

You’ve just ruined that movie for me ­ and the entire cin­ ema audience!’ Many years later, to my utter amazement, my stoney­heartedness crumbled when a guy I met in my lo­ cal ­ Company Bar in Benidorm ­ intro­ duced me to a country singer called Tom T Hall. He asked the bartender to access YouTube and play Hall’s song ‘Old Dogs and Children and Water­ melon Wine’ which contains the line ‘Old dogs care about you even when you make mistakes; God bless little children while they’re still too young to hate.’ The reason it moved me to tears is that we have an old dog, a terrier called Bijou, who recently begun suf­ fering horribly from rheumatism. He could no longer jump onto my bed and cuddle up to me at night, and I re­ ally missed his presence. Tears welled up again when Bijou began bounding about like a pup after a marvellous local vet called Natalia Diaz Tejon put him on medication that appears to have completely cured him. It’s astonishing that it’s taken this long for me to discover that, deep down, I’m just a sentimental old queen.

is simple, unfussy and func­ tional. The car has good all­ round visibility and its small stature and light steering make it an ideal city car, ag­ ile in narrow streets and tight parking spaces. Out on the open road it can cruise at motorway speeds without too much engine noise in­ trusion and although the seats may look basic, they are comfortable on longer journeys. Top speed of 1.2­litre petrol model is 186 kph (116 mph) and the 0­ 100 kph time 12.9 sec­ onds which in such a small and nimble car doesn’t actually feel as slow as the time may suggest. There are many rivals in the city car sector, including the Kia Picanto, Hyundai i10 and SEAT Mii and while some may offer a little more in terms of standard equip­ ment or better fuel econo­ my, when it comes to sheer visual charisma the Fiat 500 still leads the way.

A LAST­MINUTE Charlie Austin penalty helped West Bromwich Albion return to the top of the Sky Bet Cham­ pionship with a fifth­succes­ sive victory on Monday night. Despite a dominant perfor­ mance Slaven Bilic’s side found themselves heading in­ to the final minute level at 0­ 0, with Leeds having taken top spot over the weekend but when Kyle Edwards rushed through on goal he was unfairly tackled by Declan Rudd, and referee Oliver Langford had no hesitation and pointed to the spot. Plenty of possession even­ tually paid dividends though when Baggies’ Kyle Edwards burst through on goal and went around Rudd, who tripped the Albion winger, with referee Langford point­ ing straight to the spot. Austin stepped up to tuck the penalty into the corner, adding the perfect ending to a convincing away performance from the Baggies. West Brom went back to the top of the table leav­ ing their many travelling fans with a cheery trip home. Hamilton wins the Abu Dhabi IT was never in doubt. Brit Lewis led every lap. Hamilton had done it ­ his 11th race win of 2019, with the drivers’ title already wrapped up. It was a phenome­ nal performance. Some py­ rotechnics fired up on the final straight as the celebrations of the season came to an end in Abu Dhabi. Hamilton finished first, Ver­ stappen second, Leclerc third, Bottas a brilliant fourth having started last on the grid. Someone on the radio from the Mercedes pit lane summed it all up “Get in there Lewis, what a drive … you didn’t even break in­ to a sweat with that one.” Hamilton replied: “I can assure you I am sweating. What a race, what a weekend. I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone here, and back home. THE Balearic Sailing Federa­ tion (FBV) hosted their annu­ al Sports Gala at the Royal Yacht Club of Palma (RCNP), presenting athletes with 77 awards won at world, Euro­ pean and Spanish champi­ onships. This is the largest accumulation of awards in the history of sailing in the Balearic Islands. Chimo González Devesa, President of the FBV, con­ gratulated the athletes for their hard work and dedica­ tion at the ceremony which took place over the weekend (December 1). Devesa also thanked the commitment of their families and the nauti­ cal training clubs, who with­ out, the success would not be possible.
