ALMUÑECAR got stuck into the collection for the Food Bank and managed to raise over 10 tonnes of food. The municipality once again proved its solidarity as residents selflessly helped the neediest. The food collection campaign was organised by the Food Bank in the city’s main supermarkets. Between shoppers at Mercadona, Lidl and Día, they amassed an amazing total of 10,159 kilograms. In Mercadona at Mercado de San Cristóbal, 5,568 kilos were donate d t o t h e Fo o d B an k . In L id l shoppers gave 3,102 kilos and in Día an extra 1,489 kilograms. Rodríguez highlighted what a fantastic achievement this was, as the food was mainly collected over the course of one day. He said the bad weather and heavy rain on the Friday meant people didn’t visit the supermarkets, leaving just the Saturday to finish the collection successfully. In 2018 in Spain, 21.5 per cent of people were at risk of poverty and the Food Bank works to feed people and families who need it most.

SEASON’S GREETINGS THE festive season is well underway in La Herradura after the opening ceremony for the municipal nativity scene on Tuesday evening (December 3). Installed once again at the Pepe Gámez exhibition hall at the Herrera Civic Centre, the stunning display has been skilfully created by the Brotherhood of La Herradura with support of the council. The ceremony was attended by several key members of the community, including Deputy Mayor Juan José Ruiz Joya and Daniel Barbero, councillor for Tourism, Education and Beaches. and the Rociero Choir. The winners of this year’s Christmas Postcard Contest were also announced, crowning Guillermo Maya Barranco and Carmen Luzón Muñoz for their winning designs.

EL INGENIO shopping centre will see a drastic €15 million renovation to mark the landmark’s 20 anniversary. The town hall in Velez-Malaga has given the go-ahead for the modernisation and expansion of the popular shopping centre. The centre has been the main shopping spot in Axarquia for the last two decades and is the main employment generator in the region, offering 700 direct jobs and creating another 500 indirect jobs. With this new project, El Ingenio hopes to offer better and broader services, be easily accessible and integrate technology. Another aspect that will be worked on is making the complex more sustainable and ecological, as well as safer. Promoters highlight the much-needed update in order to face the new challenges and competitors in the market, especially the rise of electronic commerce. Open since 2000, the commercial complex will
now incorporate charging points for electric vehicles, add extra parking, modernise bathrooms and plant native plants in the gardens to reduce water consumption.
