AXARQUIAN farmers are fighting back over the latest irrigation cuts made by the Andalucian Wa t e r Board. Euro Weekly News reported back in October that the Andalucian Water Board was to cut back the irrigation allowance given to farmers below the 140 level in La Viñuela from 4,000 cubic litres per square hectare to 3,000. The decision was made after a summer of reduced rainfall has left the reserves dangerously close to drought levels. However the Spanish Tropical Association has announced it is not remaining silent and has warned that the cut backs could not only affect the farmers, but also create lasting damage to the region’s trees and flora. The president of the Spanish Tropical Association, Javier Braun has explained that it is evaluating mobilisations to demand more guarantees and infrastructure to ensure that the region receives enough water. A MAN was injured on Frid a y No v e m b e r 8 a f t e r h e attempted to extinguish a fire near Torrox. The 58-year-old had been travelling home from work as a municipal council worker on Friday when he spotted the wild fire on a plot of agricultural land outside the town. José Zapata, started to try to extinguish the flames with work tools he had in the back of his vehicle when he slipped and fell, hitting his head on a stone and rendering himself unconscious. Emergency ser vices arrived to stabilise him before transferring him to the Hospital Comarcal de la Axarquía where he is currently

COUNCIL TO PAY UP TORROX Council has been ordered to pay for amendment works to the Plaza de la Constitución in 2009. The High Court of Justice of Andalucia (TSJA) has ordered Torrox Town Council to pay a total of €157,373 to the construction company Comsa SA for additional works in the redevelopment of the Plaza de La Constitución after the amendments were not documented in the original project. The council appealed the court ruling in 2016 and the court announced last week they have dismissed it in favour of the construction company. The works were originally completed in 2010 after two years to a total of €806,309. The Zapatero plan was launched in January 2009 to regenerate the economy and employment of Torrox and Nerja.

THE mayor of Motril, García Chamorro has travelled to Sicily to attend the European Conference on the final stage of the ‘European Coasting Project.’ The conference was held this week in the Sicilian town of Ragusa to represent Motril as part of a European Tourism initiative to promote sustainable tourism throughout Europe. Organised by the region of Sicily and hosted by the mayor of Ragusa, Giuseppe Cassi and the general secretary of the FAMP, Teresa Muela Tudela, the meeting served to allow participating partners in the Coasting Project to come together and finalise the final framework of the project before presenting their findings to their respective constituencies. Motril will play an important part of Andalucia’s role in the initiative, as one of three municipalities covered under the Andalucian Federation of

Municipalities and Provinces (FAMP) who will implement the results of the project. García Chamorro explained that this European project offers “a tool to implement more sustainable tourism initiatives, make our city visible as a sustainable tourist destination and a governance project in collaboration with the entire Andalucian community.” The mayor added that “Motril has a lot to contribute, but at the same time has a lot to learn on the subject of sustainable tourism.” Chamorro added that Motril has an enviable position as it has the beautiful coastline on its door step as well as the rugged Sierra Nevada to the north. Chamorra will take the Strategy for Sustainable Tourism back to her town to present it to local and regional governments to enable the implementation of the strategies in time for 2020.

3D initiative RESIDEN TS of Axarquia with mental health issues have been given the opportunity to take part in a brand new 3D printing course. The initiative, announced by councillor for Social Innovation Natacha Rivas, is designed to help people suffering from the illness to learn about the technology of 3D printing with an aim to increase employability and social participation. The courses will take place in Benamocarra and last until March 2020.
FIVE of Axarquia’s major towns made the journey to London last week to take part in the 2019 World Trade Market. The World Trade Market Exhibition is one of the most important trade shows in the world when it comes to tourism, and this year, the Costa del Sol turned out in force to represent the Malaga Province. Nerja, Torrox, Frigiliana, Velez-Malaga and Rincon de la Victoria joined Antequera, Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Fuengirola, Marbella, Benahavis and Manilva to take part in the show to promote the region’s unique tourism qualities. Numerous companies and travel operators also attended
to help reassure the British public that Andalucia is staying committed to UK tourists in the face of Brexit uncertainty. Torrox made their mark with a high tech audio visual display that promoted the region’s ‘best climate in Europe’ slogan, whilst Rincon de la Victoria showed support to the Añoreta Gold Club, paying homage to the fact that golfing tourism equals almost 40 per cent of the town’s tourist numbers throughout the summer. This year, Frigiliana also joined its Axarquian neighbours to help promote its qualities, but also to learn about new trends and strategies in tourism to push the town forward.

PRECARIOUS: Visitors can walk along the gorge’s steep walls.
One of the most dangerous walkways PERCHED upon the walls of a frighteningly narrow gorge in the province of Malaga is a walkway called ‘El Caminito del Rey.’ The King’s Pathway is located in El Chorro lake district and is famous for its scary 100-metre drop. Initially, the walkway was built for workers at the hydroelectric power plant at Chorro Falls. They used the path to cross between the two sides of the gorge and transport materials. In
1921, King Alfonso XIII crossed the bridge for the inauguration of the Guadalorce dam. From that moment onwards, the pathway received its iconic name. El Caminito del Rey has been known as the ‘world’s most dangerous walkway’ after five people fell to their deaths between 1999 and 2000. Enthusiastic climbers would try and traverse the perilous path, but many sections of concrete were collapsed, with only narrow steel beams for support.
Following the inevitable accidents, the local government closed both entrances. For a decade, the gangway remained closed due to disrepair. But after four years of renovations and a €9 million budget, the walkway reopened to the public in 2015. Currently, the King’s Pathway is an emblematic tourist attraction and tickets are mostly sold out. Visitors can walk 2.9 kilometres along the side of the stunning gorge and observe the walkway’s history in the museum.

SPORTS in Benagalbon received a huge boost this week as the outdoor sports pavilion has finally been completed. The Municipal Pavilion ‘Rubén Ruzafa’ of Torre de Benagalbon was signed off by the mayor of Rincon de la Victoria, Francisco Salado (PP) and other councillors on Friday November 8 and it’s due to open its doors later this month. The total investment for the project has been a total of €646,633 and consisted of the removal of the old facilities and the construction of two padel and one tennis court and the refurbishment of two entrance buildings, all covered over with a new 1,700 square metre roof. “With this work complete, we optimise the outer space of the Pavilion to reach a greater number of users and we will continue with our policy of modernisation of sports facilities in the municipality,” explained Salado.

In a statement read on Friday November 8, the councillor explained that in total there are 2,448 different benefits available to users of the high dependency home care system. He highlighted that the council have made recent reforms in their structures to increase the support given to the home help sector and with the help of a €6 million investment received under the Dependency Act over the last two years; the town has now become a flagship in the province. It is estimated that there are around 600 users of the high dependency facilities currently, with Gonzales now pushing through measures to address the 497 further applicants for the home help service, which currently only sits at 58 in total accepted.

NEW AGE POLITICS OCTOBER 26 officially marked four years of political limbo for Spain. Starting in autumn of 2015 when Mariano Rajoy called for elections, a consolidated government hasn’t been formed since. Two general elections and a vote of no confidence later, meant Spaniards would have to visit the ballot boxes once again. Turbulence and disorientation reigned in the months running up to November 10, with parties desperately trying to strengthen their standing. However, further confusion follows the general elections after a very divided vote. The repeat national election was meant to break the deadlock, but has only managed to block the political sphere even more. The third elections have been a fiasco for the left, that could have easily avoided them by joining forces. Far from reinforcing acting government PSOE, the results have boosted right-wing party PP and meant the rise of far-right party Vox. Pedro Sánchez - acting president has won the elections a second time, but will find forming government an even harder task than back in April. His main allies, Unidas Podemos, have gone from 45 seats to 35 and new party Más País has only managed three seats. PP has gone from 66 seats to a healthy 88 and Vox has increased from 24 to 52, in a big breakthrough for the far-right. PSOE had faced the elections with confidence, but has instead lost three seats. Results for Ciudadanos have seen the party sink from 57 to a measly 10 seats. Their leader, Albert Rivera, shocked his party with a swift resignation following the news. Until a year ago, Spain was the only European country without a xenophobic

party in Congress. Now, Vox has achieved 962,000 more votes than in April and can be considered the third political force in the country. The ghost of a Left-wing coalition will haunt Pedro Sánchez and Pablo Iglesias - leader of Unidas Podemos - who weren’t able to reach an agreement over the summer. Sunday’s election has seen their votes plummet and their options grow slimmer. General participation went down all over the country, with citizens having grown weary of the legislative instability. It was notable that in areas of high agricultural activity and greenhouses, Vox received considerable support. Algeciras, Estepona, Mazarrón, Cartagena and Torre Pacheco are some of the areas where Vox received a generous backing. Going forward, options are limited and negotiations will be complex. The simple days of bipartisanship are a thing of the past and now Spain will have to contend with coalitions and the new age of politics. The blockage continues, but there is maybe one advantage: it will be hard to force yet another election.
PSOE shines in Axarquia THE Socialist PSOE Party came out on top in last weekend’s General Elections, but showed slightly weaker than back in April. After the votes came in on the 10N elections, the PSOE party claimed 27 of the 31 municipalities in Axarquia, three less than the 28A votes. Surprise of the campaign however was the far right Vox party pushed on with its popularity in the region by taking three seats in the Canillas de Albaida, Cómpeta and Algarrobo municipalities. Canillas de Albaida, the only town in Axarquia that did not vote for PSOE in April
has swung its majority across to the VOX party from the Podemos party, making the group the second most popular political organisation in Axarquia. Third place was the Podemos IU who won majority in Arenas. The PP remained consistent, placing second in most of the municipalities that voted for the PSOE, with a notable exception of VelezMalaga, where VOX pushed ahead with 9,706 and PP from 8,567 for the PP. Nationwide the PSOE trend continued, putting Pedro Sanchez’s party firmly ahead of the PP with a total of 120
seats, three less than 28A. Following in second was the PP with 88 seats, significantly recovering from the April elections where Pablo Casado’s party fell to only 66. VOX again made a strong showing, pulling 53 seats nationally, making them the third most important political party in Spain. However the result from the weekend does not mean that an absolute majority was reached, therefore Pedro Sánchez would again depend on the vote of the independence parties, an abstention of the PP or the forming of a coalition with Palbo Casado’s party.

Acha presented the resort to the London market as the best course in Axarquia and among the leading courses on the Costa del Sol. “The Añoreta Golf sports facilities welcomed in 2018 a total of 32,000 foreign players, and 20,000 of them were British,” he explained, emphasising the importance the British market has on the golf sector in the region. Acha, the CEO of Añoreta praised the local government for their role in keeping the resort at the forefront of the municipali-

Divers photo comp THE judging for the second ‘Open de Fotografía y Vídeo submarino Bahía de La Herradura’ takes place this week which showcases the best of the region’s underwater photographers in a stunning competition. The judging began today, Thursday November 14 and will run until Saturday to decide the best photographs and videos from underwater dive sites such as Punta de la Mona, the Marina del Este and La Herradura Bay. Councillor for Tourism, Daniel Barbero explained that “the waters between Cerro Gordo and the Peñones de El Santo are the richest in the Mediterranean in flora and fauna.” Mayor of Almuñecar, Juan José Ruiz Joya explained that “La Herradura is one of the few municipalities where the activity can be carried out 365 days a year. THE medium of theatre has been utilised by students from across Torrox and Colmenar to educate and inform about the dangers and damage caused by cyber bullying. A total of 740 students from across 11 schools have been brought together by the Education Service of the Diputación de Malaga to view the performance which took place at the Edgar N eville auditorium in Malaga last Thursday, November 7. Entitled Belcebú, they play centres around the lead character of Max, who after experiencing tough times and bullying throughout his life, pushes through using his inner strength and courage and the help of those around him. The play involved the participation of students, teachers and parents and played to an audience of 14 to 18-year-olds, providing an important message to parents
AWARENESS: Torrox and Colmenar took part in an anti bullying theatre performance. and students on everything surrounding the difficult subject matter. Parents were encouraged to take away the knowledge of awareness and training on how to spot the signs of bullying and what to do in the case that their child is a victim. It also turned the tables on the mindsets of children that become bullies and what
causes them to behave in a way that damages others. Following the performance, a workshop was held to discuss what they had just experienced and how it made them feel. The session ended with a healthy debate on what measures can be taken in schools and at home to battle the ongoing issue.

VELEZ-MALAGA has once again set itself above the crowd when it comes to flamenco as it celebrates the traditional Spanish dance’s international day. The Contemporary Art Centre in Velez will hold a performance from renowned artists Encarna Anillo and Andrés Pituquete to coincide with UNESCO’s International Flamenco Day. The event is organised by the town hall and the Open Flamenco Association and was announced by the councillor for Culture, Cynthia García and the guitarist and head of the Open Flamenco Association, Rubén Portillo. Velez-Malaga has had a long history with Flamenco, and has been privileged to have seen famous artists such as La Tana, María Terremoto and Manuela Carrasco grace various locations throughout the town. Portillo explained that ever since UNESCO declared International Flamenco Day, Velez-Malaga has always been a strong part in keeping the traditional activity alive. The latest concert “adds to the great programme that has been developed in recent years and which allows the city to become a reference point for Flamenco at an international level,” he continued. EXCHANGE: Torrox welcomes German students.
Enriching exchange THE Jorge Guillén Secondary School welcomed a group of German exchange students on Tuesday as part of its annual cultural exchange programme. The 22 students, from the Hittorf-Gymnasium in Recklinghausen, Germany, were welcomed by first deputy mayor and education councillor, María de los Ángeles Ruiz Gálvez at the entrance to the Torrox Town Hall before taking them on a sightseeing tour of the town. The Jorge Guillén Secondary School in Torrox and Hittorf-Gymnasium in Recklinghausen have signed a two-year deal to exchange students as part of the Erasmus+ programme so that students from both nationalities can experience different European
cultures, focusing on healthy living and language. “Our firm commitment of the municipal corporation to education and languages allows our young Jorge Guillén to live a very enriching experience,” explained Ruiz Gálvez. The German students made the first trip across, with Torrox’s children making the trip over to Germany in the coming weeks. During the tour of the town, the mayor gave the German students traditional gifts representing the culture of Torrox, with the idea of “taking the best possible souvenir from our town home and to possibly return on another occasion with their family and friends.”

THE ‘Antonio de Hilaria’ Public Municipal Library has debuted this week a dedicated section to showcase the undeniable intrigue of the crime novel. Entitled, ‘November in Black,’ the display gathers some of the most popular crime novels currently in the library and promotes them to a wider audience. In total, the library contains around 250 novels and videos based around the crime genre, including intrigue, thrillers, suspense and police fiction, and the display will be rotated throughout the month, with new pieces being placed as items are loaned out. The mayor of the district, Clara Perles, has explained “The aim is to create a dynamic space where books have life.” The long term goal of the project ‘Cultural Interest Centre’ “is to create a standout genre every month, giving users the opportunity to experience perhaps new novels that they wouldn’t normally enjoy.

AEDAS HOMES seem to be growing in the face of concerns over an imminent recession after the Madrid Stock Exchange listed company received approval to begin construction of a large housing development near to Torre de Benagalbon. The project, named Idilia, will contain 97 new homes ranging in sizes and including terraces, garage spaces, storage rooms, communal garden areas and swimming pools. The first phase will include 18, two-three bedroom dwellings, with associated parking spaces and garages and will start from a price of €189,000. The manager of Idilia, Roque Ballesteros, has explained the project on the company’s website, “quality housing at very competitive prices and in a privileged enclave. Rescued and released again A GRIFFON Vulture has been rescued near the fire station in Velez-Malaga by animal rescue organisation Don Animal. The vulture appeared dazed, but was
not injured as reported by the rescue team, and was to be delivered to the Junta de Andalucia for its release back into the wild.

Temperatures take a turn • Mr and Mrs Hopkins from Nottinghamshire have been holidaying on the Costa del Sol for many years and said they were feeling a slight chill. “We have been coming here for seven years. It’s definitely cooler than normal. But we are well prepared.” The couple had made sure to bring some warm clothes along and explained that weather in the UK had been disastrous. “There has been a lot of flooding back home. And it’s freezing! Around five or six degrees. Maybe jets streams are bringing the colder weather over.” Mr and Mrs Hopkins weren’t worried about the incoming cold as they were staying in a nice hotel on the promenade. “It’s a lovely hotel, really good. SPAIN has started to feel the chill and thermometers are slowly creeping down. Now, a polar blast is heading for the peninsula and is bringing wind and rain along for the ride. The Meteorological Agency has warned that winter has definitely come early and temperatures will be four to 10 degrees lower than the usual November weather. The country will be braced for strong winds and frosty evenings as today - Thursday, November 14 - will see storms marking their arrival. Heavy rains will affect most of the peninsula, with the exceptions of Almeria, Murcia and Valencia. Choppy seas and big waves will be seen on the coast and even snow could fall on mountainous areas. There is no doubt that the time to wrap up warm has come early! At Euro Weekly we wanted to know how the Costa del Sol had reacted to this icy news. Jacket in hand, we hit the streets and reminded our readers to get their winter coats and scarves out!

Scotland come to the area various times a year. They are spending November by the sea and will be returning again in January. “It’s been very stormy and they say it’s coming to Spain. We are staying in a hotel this time. When we came in June, we rented an apartment. But we always prefer hotels for colder weather, it’s much better.” • A Couple from the Netherlands were enjoying a relaxing walk along the beachfront. They travel to Fuengirola a lot and seemed unbothered by the nippy wind. “The weather is perfect for us and we are prepared.” Euro Weekly asked the northern couple for some tips to keep warm “We aren’t using any heating at the moment. We are here for two months and are staying in an apartment. The best thing is to wear warm clothes and keep them layered.”

Youth Month THE Casa de la Juventud de Almuñecar has held a performance of the show ‘Freak Show De Improvisto’ at the Centro Cívico de La Herradura and Casa de la Juventud. The performance was part of the Youth Month initiative which is currently providing activities and workshops across the municipality throughout November. Three workshops took place last week at Casa de la Juventud which focused on the production, shooting and post production of audio visual projects as well as practise exercises in the making of a short film, TV programme, video clip or report. At the weekend, a performance of the play, ‘Freak Show De Improvisto’ took place with a collection of improvised and sometimes hilarious sketches and unforgettable performances from the actors involved. As part of the workshops, with the support of Red Cross and Andalucia Digital Commitment, attendees were given education of the security risks of social media use with the aim of ‘educating to protect.’ This week’s activities are part of a month-long initiative which includes plans for over 30 different activities and performances.

LOCAL sports clubs will be eligible for a stake in a €90,000 subsidy to promote women’s sport in Benidorm. A town hall committee has now approved the conditions to be met by the sports clubs and associations with sportsw o m e n a n d w o m e n ’s t e a m s , a n n o u n c e d M a r i l o C e b r e r o s , B e n i d o r m ’s c o u n c i l l o r responsible for sport. This will be the first time that the town hall has helped women’s sport in general, as until now grants have been made directly to specific clubs or teams, Cebreros said. “With this formula we are making financial help available to all clubs in Benidorm and, what’s more, guaranteeing total equality and maximum transparency,” the councillor added. “Funding will be allocated according to previously established requirements set out in the terms and conditions.” Grants will be pegged to a limit of €15,000 per club or body and must be used to cover the cost of activities, projects and prog r a m m e s a i m e d a t p r o m o t i n g w o m e n ’s sport.
ESTEPONA has made a move towards an ecofriendly future with solar powered lighting. The town hall has opted to install LED lighting connected to solar panels. More than 100 units will be installed in the first phase of the project. This new lighting will be used in different parts of the city and will cut CO2 emissions down by 18 tonnes. The pioneering lighting system will continue the plan to reduce energy consumption and look after the environment. Deputy mayor in charge of Services - Blas Ruzafa - has announced 106 units will be installed in the city centre and outskirts. Ruzafa explains that electricity will be generated by solar panels attached to the lights. The LEDs have a sensor that can detect ambient light and will turn on and off accordingly. Another benefit is their longer product life, that can last up to five years. And their easy set up that requires no wiring to the electricity supply. All these beneficial characteristics will lead to savings for the city and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 18 tonnes. The first phase will see 5,900 lights replaced by more efficient LEDs that will save approximately €160,000 in electricity bills.
Almeria in London ALMERIA has its eye on reinforcing and expanding its share of the British tourist market. A delegation from the Provincial Tourist Service was in London this week to promote Almeria at the World Travel Market, considered one of the most important travel trade shows in Europe. There was a 550sqm Costa de Almeria stand within the Andalucia exhibition area, and over the three days the Diputacion de Almeria Tourism delegate Fernando Gimenez met with travel agents, airlines, marketing companies, travel media and tour operators with a view to boosting British visitor numbers. The deputy referred to the provincial government’s “ambitious promotion campaign with which we want to intensify this market and clear up any doubts which the Brexit situation or the Thomas Cook case generate.” He said the delegation had gone to London “with the hope of offering confidence and convinced of the virtues of the Costa de Almeria destination, which continues to be one of the British’s favourites. “Our presence here generates numerous commercial opportunities which we have to take advantage of so they are to the benefit of Almeria Province as a tourist destination.”
THE Diputación de Malaga has approved the proposal of €1.9 million worth of projects designed to improve the facilities on the region. The Governing Board of the Diputación de Malaga has approved the projects which cover 11 municipalities in the province and focused on the towns that have less than 20,000 residents. The total investment is funded by the provincial institution within the Plan of Assistance and Cooperation and will aim to provide improvements to the towns’ streets and access and the remodelling of municipal swimming pools. One of the largest beneficiaries is La Viñuela which will receive a total of €499,353 to improve the southern access to the area. Works have already begun on improving the road and infrastructure, but the investment will ensure that the third and fourth stages are able to be completed. Riogordo will receive €320,380 to refurbish their swimming pool, whilst Torrox will get €269,252 for the El Peñoncillo area of the N-340. Other municipalities that look forward to improvement projects are Sayalonga, Periana, Alcaucin and Molino Barco. Outside of Axarquia, Antequera has been approved to continue the works in Sierra de Yeguas, for the development of the fifth and sixth phase of urbanisation and paving of the Avenida Fuente de Piedra.

Funding for floods THE Council of Ministers has authorised a payment of €18 million in aid for the damages caused by the severe floods which ravaged the Llevant area in Mallorca last year. Pedro Sánchez, the acting Prime Minister of Spain, took advantage of his electoral rally in Palma last week to make the announcement. Accompanied by PSOE colleagues, the mayor of Palma and members of Congress, Sánchez confirmed that the state will cover a large proportion of the costs which were spent to repair the infrastructure and public facilities in the affected municipalities. The floods of October 9 constitute as one of the most serious tragedies caused by rain to take place in Spain over the last 25 years. Claiming the lives of 13 people and injuring several others, numerous houses and roadways were also left severely damaged. In the days after the flooding, it is reported that authorities removed over 4,200 tons of rubble and debris, carrying out 23 actions on the roads. Sant Llorenç was the worst affected town, with Artà, Manacor, Capdepera and Son Servera also suffering huge devastation. The impact of the downpour was exacerbated by geography, infrastructure and the difficulty of forecasting the disaster. Experts at the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) estimated that a torrential rain of this magnitude only repeats itself once in every 1,000 years.
Glorious once again SANTA MARIA Church will open its doors on November 17 to celebrate the end of restoration works. San Clemente Cultural Federation has organised the open day for guests to enjoy the newly refurbished temple. Spain’s Ministry of Development has invested €1 million in the restoration so far, with further building still planned. Correos postal service, will also commemorate the occasion by issuing a stamp with the façade of the medieval church. Mayor Diego José Mateos has said further work will follow the initial restoration. The atrium will be the next project workers will undertake, with a budget of €300,000 already approved from the European Investment Bank. Mateos explained that rehabilitation of the exterior had been impossible due to bureaucratic reasons which have now been resolved.

Riders Ready MOUNTAIN bike riders strapped on their helmets in La Viñuela for the Mountain Bike Half Marathon entitled ‘El Oasis de la Axarquia’ on Saturday November 9. Spokesman for the Commonwealth of Municipalities of the Costa del Sol, Antonio Sanchez, the mayor of La Viñuela, Jose Juan Jimenez and councillor for Sports, Rafael Fortes had previously announced the event as the first time a race of this type has taken place in the town. The event was part of the 21st Provincial Circuit BTT Diputación de Málaga and allowed riders to take in the stunning scenery and picturesque views of the lake on specially designed and constructed courses around the
mountains surrounding the town. Fortes has congratulated the town council for their organisation of the event, as well as the Spanish Cycling Federation for choosing La Viñuela for a round in the regional series. One hundred and fifty cyclists entered the event which was open to professionals and amateurs and consisted of a 43-kilometre route with a total of 1,023 metres of climbing, “It is a sinuous, fun and beautiful route that will delight all mountain biking lovers,” said the councillor for Sports. The course began in the historic town centre before climbing through to the watchtower and the Buddhist centre to continue through Los Romanes all the time overlooking the reservoir.

Voting in the UK General Election BRITISH citizens living abroad may vote in UK general elections, referendums and European Parliament elections for up to 15 years after leaving the UK but may only do so if they were registered to vote in the UK while living there. Those who were under 18 at the time of leaving the UK may vote as long as their parent or guardian was registered to vote in the UK and must apply accordingly. The actual limit is arbitrary and has changed from as little as seven years to more than 15, but it was Conservative policy that the time limit should be scrapped and it supported a private members bill to this effect. For various reasons, it was not considered possible to push the bill through prior to the Brexit Referendum or the last election and now it was talked out of Parliament earlier in the year, so those who have lived outside of the UK for more than 15 years will not be allowed to vote in the General Election on December 12. If y o u a re a l re a dy r egi st er ed with your local council as an active voter living overseas then it is expected that your ballot paper will be posted to you on or about
November 20. If however you have not yet confirmed registration, but were registered on the electoral list prior to your leaving the UK (or were under 18 and qualify) , then this must be done by 5pm November 26 and your ballot paper should be posted on November 30. Due to the tight time frame there is a very strong risk that some Overseas Electors would not be able to receive and return a postal vote in time for it to be counted by 10pm on the day of election. There is also the possibility that a postal strike by Royal Mail will take place in November/December 2019 which could cause chaos for postal votes. Because of this local councils are strongly advising that potential voters should consider changing their arrangement to a proxy vote instead by appointing someone to vote on their behalf, but they would need to be registered themselves and be eligible to vote in national elections. As European nationals are not able to vote in UK Parliamentary elections, your proxy would need to hold British, Irish or Commonwealth nationality.

I could not register the plot in the Land Registry in my name because it was part of a double plot which had not yet been ‘segregated’ or officially subdivided. Now the land has been official ly subdivided but the seller refuses to go to the no tary to sign a proper ‘escritura,’ the official title deed. IT is no secret that since the re duction in tension between the USA and Cuba during the Obama administration that the Spanish government has been encourag ing companies to become in volved in the Cuban economy. Now, that Donald Trump has activated the 1996 HelmsBurton Act, there is a possibility that Spanish companies may be sued for their activities within the Caribbean nation. There may be as many as 16 Spanish companies including Iberostar, Melia, BBVA bank which could be targeted, but Spain has warned that it will chal lenge any and all lawsuits that may arise.

Post early for Christmas A PLANNED strike by post office workers in the UK could cause chaos in December affecting Christmas deliveries and over seas postal votes for the General Elec tion. Some 97 per cent of workers voted for the stoppage and although no date or dates have been set, the Royal Mail is
fighting back. They have taken legal action asking for an injunction to stop the strike, claiming that the strike ballot was ‘unlawful and, therefore, null and void.’ The operation was floated on the Stock Exchange in 2013 and in 2015 the govern ment sold the last of its shares.

Trusting Spain to help By John Smith THE Amazon Group is increasing its investment in Spain by an estimat ed €2.5 billion by opening three new data centres in its fight against Microsoft and Google. A subsidiary, Amazon Web Ser vices (AWS) which is involved with Cloud storage is the vehicle being used for this expansion which will take place in Aragon and will be ideally placed to serve all of the main business areas in Spain. Whilst it is primarily an Amazon project, it does already supply ser vices to a number of Spanish com panies such as Mapfre, Endesa and

More delay, more cost THE London Crossrail project which is planned to connect Reading with Shenfield and is partially open has taken another hit and will not be completed until 2021. To add to the problems of what
is currently Europe’s biggest infrastructure scheme which should have been completed by December 2018 is that it is also believed costs are in the region of £650 million (€715 million) over the re-
vised budget. The original targeted cost for what will be known as the Elizabeth Line was £15.9 billion (€18.25 billion) and is now likely to reach £18.25 billion (€21 billion).
BBVA and once the centres are open, they will have the capacity and reach to service most of south ern Europe. This will be the seventh Euro pean centre of its type to be opened, after existing divisions in Ireland, the United Kingdom, Swe den and France, with Italy also planned. Its two biggest competitors do not have similar centres in Spain which increases the AWS opportu nity as experts say that it is impor tant that companies have the op tion to store information on the Cloud through locally based opera tions. Already one of the three most profitable companies in the world, Amazon has expanded quite quickly within Spain with its online sales services and warehouses and cur rently employs almost 5,000 work ers and has invested in excess of €1 billion to date. With the new centres expected to be open by late 2022 or early 2023, the employment prospects which will include large numbers of workers constructing the buildings just continue to expand.

Less wealth SWISS bank UBS has reported that for the first time since 2015 the combined wealth of the world’s billionaires in 2018 had fallen by 4.3 per cent to $8.5 trillion (€7.7 trillion). The bulk of those affected are based in Asia.
GDP growth LATE last week, the European Commission reduced its forecast for Spain’s GDP growth in 2019 to 1.9 per cent, from the previous estimate of 2.3 per cent. This compares well to the forecast for the Eurozone of just 1.1 per cent.
Pension cuts FOLLOWING discussions with shareholders, the Standard Chartered Bank which operates in 60 countries throughout the world has agreed to reduce the pension allowances for the CEO and CFO from 20 per cent to 10 per cent of their salaries.

Heritage under threat? LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT WHEN is all this ridiculous, upsetting and often downright insulting reversed racism going to stop? How long will it take for the authorities to gather the courage to persecute the minority whingers with the same fervour and enthusiasm they seem to reserve for the victimised majori ties, who are having to watch almost everything that comes out of their mouths in case it ‘of fends’ someone? Just recently we had that awful British hating Afua Hirsch, who complained that white models should not adopt Afro hair styles because it was trying to ‘steal black culture.’ Nothing of course was mentioned of the thou sands of hair dressing salons earning fortunes by straightening, and thereby westernising, the no toriously difficult hair of black ladies the world over! This week has been no exception to the ex ponents of this onesided attitude, which, if they’re not careful, will turn us all into racists. The small and pretty town of Bideford has for years been referred to as ‘Little White Town.’ This title stretches back to the 1850s when the

town, endeavouring to repel the scourge of cholera, had all its houses painted white and cov ered in ash. Apparently during this period, it was referred to by author Charles Kingsley in his book Westward Ho, as a ‘little white town.’ Over the years, the name has become a part of its heritage and is proudly displayed on a num
ber of public notices and postings. Yes, you’ve guessed it. There has now been a complaint that the name is racist! What is even more annoying, is that it appears there were actually only a cou ple of dissenters, but in the usual ‘minority ap peasement’ mode that seems to prevail over our once great country, the town council has de
creed that the name be changed in case they ap peared to be advocating ‘white supremacy.’ You really couldn’t make it up could you? Once again the British culture and heritage is being threatened by PC people, who are in fact the biggest racists of all. I mean where does it all end? How long will it be before anything referred to as white offends some bigot or another? I do actually recall, that at the end of apartheid in South Africa, it was somewhat frowned upon to ask for a white coffee and more socially ac ceptable to request a coffee with milk! Will Whitechapel one day be referred to as Grey chapel? Whitehaven become Greenhaven? Will it be the Purple Cliffs of Dover welcoming the ille gal immigrant paddling across the English Chan nel? Why don’t we expunge the word from the dictionaries altogether? For heavens and all our sakes, when is some one going to get a grip and say enough is enough? The UK is already one of the most wel coming and politically correct places on the plan et. What do these bigots actually want? Will they ever be happy? Are you winning or losing? ROBERT SHALLIS IF we’re willing to learn by our mistakes, no one should consider themselves or anyone else in life a loser. The late great leader and revolutionary, Nelson Mandela said. “I never lose. I either win or I learn.” When adhered to, that powerful statement can make a big difference to us. We all have an option to learn from what we may consider losing at some point in our life. All too often we hear people say: “I never win anything,” “I always lose at this.” Well, therein lies the first problem. If you assume the thought and the feeling of never amounting to, or achieving anything then how can you expect to be a winner at anything? We first need to create that winning feeling to start the process, we can do this by reacting to those negative voices in our head in a different way.
NELSON MANDELA: “I never lose. I either win or I learn.” It is important to know that that feeling of failure, fear and anxiety are just that, feelings. It is your own mind that has created the negativity. They are not facts, they are simply an outcome focusing on past failures instead of future successes. These feelings underestimate your real abilities and amplify the task ahead. Ignore these negative thoughts and feelings and replace them with
thoughts of a positivity and a more favourable outcome. It sounds easy to do doesn’t it, well it is, but here’s the thing, it’s easier not to. The rea son we don’t like change is because change feels uncomfortable to us. People would rather be comfortable than do something different even though it doesn’t benefit them in the long run. You don’t have to stay in the
world you’re living in if it doesn’t serve you, you can create your own new positive world. A gentle way to start is to visualise how things might or could possibly be. Visualise how things would be if you achieved a certain something you have always wanted to achieve, however small it may be. Start small, make it fun, see yourself for example finally beating the rest of the family
at Monopoly, imagine how that would feel instead of that old pat terned phrase of, “I never win at any thing.” You can of course apply this to anything, even on a much grander scale in order to become a success and feel like one of life’s winners. Negative is normal, it’s part of life but it is not successful. Begin to see any negative thoughts as and when they arise as a challenge, a challenge to tackle them differently in order to cre ate the winning feeling you deserve. Learning how to tackle that losing feeling will create a new enthusiasm in what you wish to achieve and give you enjoyment in the process. So, now you no longer need to dwell or live in the realms of losing thoughts, you just need to handle and deal with it. Start today, not to morrow. If you put something off to day, what excuse will you have the next day? Remember, the difference be tween winning and losing is not giv ing up. If we’re winning we’re having fun, if we’re losing we’re learning. See yourself as a winner, take ac tion and see what prizes life has waiting for you.

Beautiful, beautiful San Sebastian TALK to almost every Spanish national about travelling around Spain, and they will all mention San Sebastian. And if you say that you’ve never been there, it’s greeted with a look of dismay, quickly followed by ‘it’s beautiful... you must go there!’ San Sebastian or Donostia as it’s known to the local Basque Country population is one of the most northerly of Spain’s most popular tourist destinations located on the Bay of Biscay. San Sebastian’s most famous attraction is its great selection of beaches, but for those seeking a little more than a sun bathing holiday there is a wealth of history to be discovered and a chance to learn about a whole different culture and language at the same time. If anything, a trip to San Se bastian feels like you’re visiting two countries for the price of one. Much of the architecture that San Sebast ian offers is relatively modern, with one ex ample being the Buen Pastor Cathedral (or Cathedral of the Good Shepherd). Dominat ing the local skyline at 75 metres high (245 feet), construction began in 1888 with the of ficial documentation being signed by the twoyearold King Alfonso XIII... the present
King Felipe VI’s great grandfather. The building was originally just a church and designated as being a cathedral in 1953, nine years before it was completed. Featur ing the Gothic Revival style, it’s considered the most important church in San Sebastian and is an even more spectacular sight at night thanks to the lighting. One of the most visited places in San Se bastian is the Parte Vieja (Old Town). The quaint buildings famous for their very colour ful roofs are protected from the sea by the Monte Urgull. Traditional tourists that are looking for a more relaxed form of nightlife will quickly fall in love with the Parte Vieja when they get to know its trendy bars and cafes, and with the Basque Country being world famous for the quality of its cuisine, there is no problem in finding a quality restaurant or four. To walk off the food and drink, a stroll through the streets to see some of the city’s other famous churches such as the Basilica of St Mary’s of the Chorus is recommended, and as you do so try to imagine that until 1863, this historic Parte Vieja was surround ed by a wall.

A solution needed HOMELESSNESS has travelled the Atlantic Ocean and has expanded across Europe. The US has always been known for unacceptably high numbers of people living on the streets. The way of life in the capitalist hub has never been easy for those who couldn’t keep up and estimates state that 129,972 people are homeless in California alone. In Europe, vagrancy is rising and is in need of an immediate solution. Charity Shelter calculated that around 300,000 people lived on the streets in the UK. As of March 2019, 32,740 households were considered homeless and 126,020 children were living in temporary housing like B&Bs or hostels. The situation in Spain is also worsening as house and rent prices soar. Around 31,000 people are homeless and numbers are set to increase. It’s getting more common to come across people sleeping rough at night and to find areas taken over by vagrants. Article 47 in the Spanish Constitution states that Spanish citizens have the right to enjoy decent and adequate housing. It also adds that public authorities will promote the necessary conditions to enforce this right. Although homelessness is less prominent in Spain, it still constitutes a significant social issue that requires change. Migrants and young people are some of the most affected, with 30 per cent of the homeless aged between 18-29.
NEVER FORGET REMEMBRANCE DAY has always been very important to me and I always pay my re spects to those who died in the line of duty. Living abroad, I sometimes feel distanced from this tradition. It’s important that we never forget the brave men who fought for our country, and we need to pass this on to future generations. Even though we may not be living in the UK, we can still show our sup port in many ways. Thank you to the local businesses who honour the fallen and sell poppies for charity, you help us feel united as we remember our roots. I was grateful for the piece in Euro Weekly dedicated to Remembrance Day and every thing that it represents. In light of everything going on, moments like these put everything into perspective. In the stars? I THINK there must be something in the stars right now, some heavenly or unheavenly in fluence that decided to punish Spain and the UK at roughly the same time with a gen eral election. Here in Spain it’s beginning to look like Groundhog Day with Pedro Sanchez try ing to form a government yet again after inconclusive results and a hung parlia ment although this time Vox will be breathing down his neck as well. Perhaps the Spanish are more fortu nate than Brits back home, though, be cause those who bothered to turn out at least knew who to vote for. Retinol is also good for acne scars and sun damage and can brighten the skin, giving the look of a youthful complexion. Age spots can al so be lightened with this acidic product as skin tone is evened out.

AI scans for cancer ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE is now being used to detect cancer in a pioneering proce dure. A new blood test uses AI to quickly scan for brain tu mours with 90 per cent accu racy. Scientist hope that this new diagnostic tool could be used by the NHS and hospi tals worldwide. Brain tumours are hard to detect and cause symptoms that can be confused with oth er maladies. These ambiguous symptoms include headaches, memory loss and vision prob lems, with a scan being the only way to detect the cancer ous cells. On many occasions, this can result in late diagnosis and the illness reaching ad vanced stages. The new test is currently being tested and is able to
give doctors a result within hours. Scientists hope this sys tem will result in more cases of early detection and success ful treatment. The AI looks for the existence of gliomas, the most common form of brain tumours. The innovative discovery took place at the University of Edinburgh and was presented at the Cancer Research Insti tute’s annual conference in Glasgow. In the UK, more than 9,000 people have brain tumours detected, of which around half are cancerous, with a similar number of cases in Spain. Fig ures reveal only 15 per cent of these patients survive five or more years after their diagno sis. And a staggering 62 per cent of people are diagnosed
in the emergency ward, even though they might have visit ed their GP beforehand. However, if the test ends up being used in hospitals, a larg er number of people could be tested and detection could skyrocket. Scientists working on the AI predict that the test could reach public clinics with in 18 months. Currently, the blood test has been trialled on 400 people with signs of tu mours. The test correctly iden tified 40 people with cancer and 82 per cent of total can cers, giving it a high accuracy rating. One of the benefits of the new tool, is how simple and straightforward the test is. The Artificial Intelligence pro gram runs on a laptop and takes a small amount of time.

In parliament Black Rod will be appearing with a Zorro mask and the Speaker will sport a clipon red nose and a revolving bowtie. However, we are not so revolu tionary when it comes to political correctness. While the media colum nists launch vitriolic personal attacks on those with whose views they dis agree, we go to extraordinary lengths to avoid any possibility of hurting the sensibilities of ‘minority’ groups. Racism, prejudice and dis crimination are completely unac ceptable but how sensitive has soci ety become?

THE head of an FE college spent £150,000 in four years on her corporate credit card, buying lobster dinners, hiri n g c h a u ff e u r s , s t a y i n g i n five-star hotels and flying first class. Stella Mbubaegbu, principal of Highbury College, Portsmouth, spent the money when the college w a s m a k i n g re d u n d a n c i e s and its Ofsted rating was falling from ‘outstanding’ to ‘requires improvement.’ The mind boggles at yet another example of financial ineptitude and claims based on entitlement, togeth er with an apparent lack of account ability, control or authorisation more of a gravy plane than a gravy train? It seems both the running and governance of some FE colleges just like those unis mired in expenses scandals we already know about
CREDIT: More expenses scandals. are equally questionable. And what about schools? I read about one that was taken out of local authority control and made into an academy. First thing the head did was to award himself an 18 per cent pay rise, his deputy a 5 per cent rise and the staff nothing. Subsequently, the school performed less well than under the local authority. Progress,eh? It’s sad that many of the people I regarded as pillars of the community when I was growing up school/col lege principals, police officers, politi cians (with their General Election ‘pledges’) now appear to have lost the concept of selfless public service. And yet no one seems to have
learned anything from their miscon duct! There’s nothing but hot air, lip service and a stubborn refusal to face up to reality followed by phras es like ‘we’ve all learned the lessons,’ ‘we’ve moved on,’ ‘the system’s been overhauled.’ Or, when wrongdoing’s uncov ered, phrases like: ‘it’s only a few’ who make ‘mistakes.’ Well, why are the majority so incompetent or not up to dealing with ‘the few’ when it routinely happens? Shouldn’t repeat ed wrongdoing ring alarm bells? I know I bang on about unwarrant ed expenses, the NHS, the police ser vice and so on. My rationale is that by drawing repeated attention to these issues can there be any hope of change. Truth stranger than fiction? You couldn’t make it up. It’s not just the wine... ONE single word in Spanish conjures up only one image... and that word is Rioja. IT was one of those ‘gosh, how time flies’ confabs that normally bore the hell out of me. But on this occasion I was the one who sparked the discussion when a friend said how sad it was that Cameron Boyce, loveable star of the Disney Channel franchise Descendants and the TV series Jessie had tragically ‘passed away’ aged just 20 earlier this year. As someone who dislikes eu phemisms with a passion, I snapped: ‘He didn’t pass away. He died!’ And, to emphasise my hatred of phrases used to disguise uncomfortable truths, I quoted the hilarious ex change between John Cleese and Michael Palin in Monty Python’s fa mous ‘Dead Parrot’ sketch. Returning the bird to Palin’s pet shop, Cleese says: ‘It’s bleed in’demised. It’s passed on. This parrot is no more … It’s rolled down the cur tain and joined the choir invisible. This is an exparrot!’ The only euphemism not used to describe the deceased bird with its ‘beautiful plumage’ was ‘it’s now

The Phrase Finder website says: ‘Only the US military, with their repu tation of obfuscation, could translate ‘innocent people were killed’ into ‘damage was caused nearby’.’
While I greatly appreciate folk not beating about the bush, I detest those who use outrageous hyperbole to overstate various issues. Cue the imbecile Donald Trump. When Abu Bakr alBaghdadi died last month, Trump sounded like a bom bastic playground bully when he de clared the terrorist was ‘whimpering and crying and screaming all the way’ to his death. I shuddered when I heard the vile narcissist’s gleeful and ghoulish state ment, then wondered how he knew so much of the Daesh leader’s death so soon after it occurred. The fact is he didn’t! At the begin ning of November The Independent reported that he made the whole thing up. It reported: ‘The Secretary of Defence, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of staff and the Regional Com mander who oversaw the operation that killed the leader of Daesh all say they have no idea what the President was talking about.’ Am I surprised. Hardly. When Trump’s lips move, you can be cer tain he’s lying. By the way, the eu phemism for a lie is a ‘terminological inexactitude’ a term created by Winston Churchill in 1906.

620 brakehorsepower and a top speed of 155mph. Aston Martin claim its
060mph time is under 4.0 seconds, similar to the standard Rapide S. The brand has focused on a stable performance and says the acceleration can be repeated without the motor’s overheating.
Safety made much simpler AUTOMATIVE design is constantly changing, futuristic exteriors, electrically powered, autopilot, built-in satnav and now the conventional hand brake is set to be a thing of the past. It is reported that 37 per cent of new cars are fitted with the traditional parking brake lever. Premium brands such as Audi, Land Rover, Mercedes and Porsche have all opted against the mechanical feature, with many others fol lowing suit. However, lack of the feature does not mean a lack of safety as the new electronic parking brake serves the same purpose. Both have to pass the relevant product stan dards for volume sales and an MoT test. As cars are increasingly fitted with automatic gearboxes, linked to the handbrake, and auto matic hold functions for hillstarts, the integra tion of the socalled handbrake and the other sophisticated control systems makes more sense than attempting to leave the mechanical ele ment under the direct control of the driver the danger of the mechanical and the electronic sys tems interfering with each other is plain.
An electronic parking brake is operated using a switch that activates a pair of small motors that engage the rear brakes. What was once considered a luxury and advanced feature, the electronic brake requires less physical effort and holds the car more securely. Most electronic handbrakes disengage auto matically when you pull away, plus they often offer the additional safety benefit of an auto matic hillhold assist function. The switch helps streamline cabins by taking up less interior space than a chunky lever on the centre console. However, on the downside, the consequence of an electronic parking brake malfunctioning could be more drastic. A faulty handbrake will usually make its impending failure apparent be fore it eventually goes; the electronic version may do so more suddenly. If so, then the car could be rendered immobile. The BMW 7 series, released way back in 2002 was the first to feature a button on the steering wheel to operate the electronic brake. Today it can be found on anything from Civics to Golfs and other affordable models.

CCCA enjoying the Winter Sunshine

OR those of us living here in beautiful Spain its been a marvellous summer that, until recently, has just gone on and on! However, there have been a few signs recently that maybe the season is changing and with it the weather. So, it was with some trepidation that members of the Classic Car Club of Andalucia prepared for their November classic car run last Saturday. About 40 cars gathered at Venta El Tunel for the traditional 10.00am breakfast where there was just a little chill in the air but nothing too serious. Venta El Tunel incidentally is just outside Malaga on the old Granada road near the Pantano. The route for the day was to head up towards the Torcal where the altitude could bring bad weather. The Club had last been here four or five years ago when, in April, there was snow falling during a serving of some chilled Fino before heading to lunch! Today wouldn’t be quite so bad but crews were, at this stage, not to know that! The registration and signing-on process was handled with great aplomb by regular helpers Angela Sharp and Marilyn MacPherson whilst members enjoyed the social intercourse that goes with a bacon sarni and a cup of hot coffee! Some new members, Carole and David Binder had arrived, perhaps wondering what it was exactly that they were getting in to, and some members that had been away for some time were returning to reacquaint themselves with the Club, Peter and Sue Cross in their Jaguar XKR and Pieter and Kay Van de Lustgraaf in their lovely 1960’s Triumph TR250 were welcomed back after a long summer away travelling. It was good to see a Dutch contingent, Danny Grietens and Arnie Hille, bring some gorgeous American muscle machinery in the form of C6 and C7 ZR Corvettes which made quite a contrast to some of the regular and perhaps more ‘conventional’ Classics! Also back were Carl and Maria Cullimore, but their lovely red 1970’s Triumph TR6 had developed an electrical malaise that morning. Rather than miss the fun, they brought Maria’s shopping Seat so that they could still participate. Life members Konrad and Judi Thomas had come over from Blighty especially to join in the fun and so had to settle for a hire car but no-one minded that. From Sweden came Jan Alvemark in his late father’s beautiful Jaguar XJ-8 which is always so graceful and can carry four people in comfort as it usually does! was navigated for the day by Marilyn MacPherson. Her husband, Malcolm, had passed away three years ago leaving behind a Jaguar E-Type and a 1990’s BMW 840. Neither car had been used for some 15 or more years, so Ian has had both of these cars completely restored over the past two years and was delighted to take Marilyn, herself now a regular CCCA member, along in the BMW 840i that performed faultlessly and was thoroughly enjoyed by them both. The stunning, red Jaguar E-Type is also now ready and will be out on future CCCA events. At 11.00am, after a short drivers’ briefing, cars headed along the fabulous old road towards Casabermeja where, at several points, there are amazing views of both the Mediterranean and the Sierra Nevada mountains simultaneously. From Casabermeja the route headed towards Villanueva de la Concepción where the big climb to the top of the Torcal began. Fortunately, although the air was indeed quite a bit cooler than at the coast, there was no snow and the sun was still shining! The reward was stunning topography and terrific views of the massive rock

faces that dominate and dwarf the local countryside. Just before Antequera the route turned off left to skirt the northern part of the Torcal and then a fast run down to Valle de Abdalajis where a welcome coffee stop had been arranged. Or, mostly for the navigators, a beer stop! The Giles / MacPherson BMW 840 had kept company with the very new and very fast BMW M850i of John and Angie Lane and it was good to see both the cars together and parked together at the coffee stop. From coffee, the route was fairly simple and passed by Los Caballos near Pizarra and then through Alora, passing the old castle, before joining the main A-357 and taking the new road to bypass VillaFranco del Guadalhorce and head in to Coin. There is a quite marvel-
lous and largely undiscovered restaurant in Coin called La Bohemia. It has been there for many years and is still run by the same family. It provides outstanding food that is far and away different to what most expect from Coin and was very much appreciated by all the CCCA members and their guests. Cava and canapés were served to thirsty crews in the Cortijo on arrival and a marvellous lunch was then served. It had been a super day, a stunning route with easy driving and, perhaps more important, easy navigation. To finish this with a spectacular lunch was a fitting end and thanks were given to the organisers, Ian and Carol Giles, for making it such a great day. They even kept the good weather…!! Next events for the CCCA are the Clubnight and Christmas Party on December 3 and then a Christmas Special Car run on Saturday, December 7. I also hope to participate in, and report on, the Jaguar (JEC) run later in November. That’s it until our next issue.

And Burnley wasted no time in looking to make amends for their firsthalf collapse at Sheffield United a week ago with an uptempo opening that had the Hammers immediately on the ropes. It’s evident to the majority of West Ham supporters that the Chilean manager Pelligrini has to be sacked but club owner David Sullivan will have a prob lem there as he gave the ex Manchester City manager a long fouryear contract on £7 million a year and no doubt will want paying off. West Ham supporters are in numbers now calling for the head of their manager and the bookies have him odds on to be the next sacked manager in the premiership.
