DEADLY GALE A WOMAN has died and a young girl has been seriously injured after being struck by a tree in Palma.

The tragic event took place close to the Cathedral of Mallorca around 1 2 p m o n S u n d a y, w h e n a palm tree gave way due to strong winds.

According to reports, the woman of Brazilian nat i o n a l i t y, w a s i n t h e a r e a with her husband and seven-year-old daughter at the

time. It was then that a strong gust of wind forced the top of the tree to fall, crushing the mother who sadly died at the scene.

Some branches also hit the young girl who suffered a severe anxiety attack upon seeing her mother lying on the floor.

Both father and daughter were attended to by emergency personnel where the girl was taken to hospital.

High winds have caused damage across Mallorca,

where in Puerto Andratx, fire crews were on call from the early hours of Sunday morning to deal with multiple fallen trees.

Rough seas also caused many boats to be cast a d r i f t a n d i n L l u c m a j o r, the Ma-6015 highway was closed.

Information from Aemet recorded gusts of up to 110 kilometres per hour with emergency services issuing a level one risk alert on Sunday.

24-HOUR TAXI SHIFTS AIR EUROPA: Operates flights to 69 destinations throughout Spain.

Deal for Air Europa IT has been announced that the International Airlines Group (IAG) will purchase Air Europa for €1,000 million.

IAG, the Anglo-Spanish airline company whose subsidiaries include British Airways, Iberia, Vueling and Aer Lingus, has agreed to buy Air Europa from Llucmajorbased travel group Globalia. The acquisition is scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2020.

In the report issued by IAG to Spain’s National Securities Market Commission, the company explains that the acquisition will unite the two largest Spanish airlines and will create an operational centre hub in Madrid.

The plan is to turn Madrid airport into a genuine rival to Europe’s four largest hubs - Frankfurt, Heathrow, Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Schiphol, where IAG will become Europe’s market leader for Caribbean and Latin

American routes.

Javier Hidalgo, Globalia’s CEO, believes that the present and future of Air Europa will be strengthened and is convinced that joining IAG will prove to be a great success.

However, some groups and unions in the Balearic Islands have expressed their concern about the deal due to the dependence of the islands’ connectivity with the airline. According to the General Secretary of the Federation of Citizens Services, employees at the Globalia headquarters in Mallorca are also worried about the future of their jobs on the island.

Air Europa operates flights to 69 destinations in Spain, Europe, northern Africa, the Caribbean, the US and Latin America. The airline’s operating profit in 2018 was €100 million and they achieved a turnover of €2,100 million.

AN agreement has been made which will allow taxi drivers in Palma to take 24hour shifts during the high season.

In a move to avoid a summer with complaints about the lack of taxis in operation in the capital, several representatives from associations in the sector met with the Deputy Mayor of Sustainable Mobility, Francesc Dalmau.

This year, Palma City Council received a large number of complaints about the shortage of taxis at peak times in the city. This is largely a result of the cruise ship boom and some rather out-of-date rulings and business practices.

Dalmau explained the need to reach agreements to transform the taxi sector

and that the proposal will be outlined in the next commission.

Another innovation will be the launch of a mobile application which will be a direct tool to connect taxi drivers to customers. A similar app was introduced in Ibiza this summer and has already proved to be a success, welcomed by the community.

The councillor also revealed that from the Mobility area, six taxi licences, rescued by the City Council during the 1990s, will be drawn up for a price of €168,000 each, 30 per cent less than the market price.

He also explained that drivers without a licence will have priority when choosing.

Currently, Palma has a total of 1,246 taxi licences.

THE festival of San Martín or the Humanitarians festival is one of the most popular autumn folklore celebrations, during the time when c ro p s a re s e e d e d a n d f a t tened cattle are slaughtered.

This international festivity celebrates Saint Martin of Tours, a Roman soldier known for his kindness and humanitarian beliefs, who later became a French bishop. Legend says he once cut his cloak in half to

share with a beggar during a snowstorm. That same night he dreamt of Jesus wearing his half cloak and telling the angels ‘Here is Martin, the Roman soldier who is now baptised, he has clothed me.’

His good humour and kind nature earned him the respect and admiration of his people. Nowadays, Saint Martin is considered protector of beggars and patron of soldiers.

This day is also known in some places as Old Hallowmas Eve and will be celebrated all over Europe

on November 11. In Spain, this tradition is mostly celebrated in Asturias and Galicia. The occasion begins with a song mass and is follow ed by par ades and dance groups. Food and agrarian products are auctioned and then people enjoy a ‘brotherhood’ meal of fabada, a typical white bean stew.

In Galicia, the slaughter of fattened pigs has given way to a popular saying ‘Every pig gets its St Martin,’ meaning everybody gets their comeuppance.

THE mayor of Palma travelled to London last weekend to present the capital as a sustainable destination at the World Travel Market.

Joined by Elena Navarro, the councillor for Tourism, Health and Consumer Affairs, José Hila explained how “the city has made a clear and determined tourist commitment that is appreciated beyond the sun and the beach.” He believes that sustainability is an important factor that tourists value considerably, and that by offering Palma as a unique and quality destination will boost the industry.

Over the weekend, the Consell de Mallorca also launched their ‘Fall for Mallorca’ promotional campaign, which was held at Hispania, one of London’s most popular Spanish restaurants. Here, the general public and media were invited to ‘touch, feel and taste Mallorca’ where several activities related to gastronomy, culture and the arts were organised throughout the day.

PALMA’S Son Sant Joan Airport will end 2019 having handled 29.8 million passengers. This is a 3 per cent increase from last year and a new record for the airport.

The information was released by José Antonio Álvarez, the airport’s Director, before he left his role to take up a new position in charge of Madrid-Barajas Airport. Álvarez attributes the growth to various factors, includi n g h i g h e r p a s s e n g e r t r a ff i c a n d a g r e a t e r r o t a t i o n o f planes. He also suggested that the ‘Better in Winter’ promotional campaign positively impacted seasonality and has been supported by airlines and tour operators.

When questioned about the recent collapse of airlines and tour operators, Álvarez stressed that Mallorca was able to absorb the disappearance of Air Berlin and Monarch and that the same will apply to Thomas Cook.

He added that “the island is well positioned among foreign tourism markets.”

Boost for local business AN emotional commercial will be broadcasted over the festive season, encouraging people in the Balearic Islands to shop at small businesses.

Launched by Pimeco, the most important association of small and medium trade in Mallorca, the objective of the campaign is to draw attention to the values of local enterprises.

Written by Ernest Riera, the two-to three-minute advert will be shot in Palma and be screened during the Christmas period, a crucial time for entrepreneurs in the sector.

which create a sense of community, stating that sometimes “you don’t realise

their role until they disappear.”

In the last few years, more than 600 shops have closed in the Balearic Islands, with consumers opting to purchase goods online or at large retailers.

Toni Fuster the President of Pimeco, voiced his pride to have the Mallorcanborn screenwriter on board, where Riera has written several other successful films and documentaries such as 47 metres and Overbooking, which received acclaim amongst the public when it was screened at the Augusta Cinema in Palma for several weeks.

Riera accepted the role after being reminded of his years spent in England.

Academy expansion THE government has approved the proposed expansion of the Rafa Nadal Academy, which will allow for the construction of an 8,000 m2 sports centre and 15 tennis courts.

The new multi-purpose building will house three fast-surface courts and seven semi-covered clay courts which will give players optimal play on days when adverse weather conditions affect tennis training.

The building will also have spaces dedicated to physiotherapy, psyc h o l o g y, n u t r i t i o n a n d sports medicine, offering a comprehensive

service to its players.

In addition, eight outdoor clay courts will be built on the premises.

After opening its doors in 2016, the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar has already become one o f t h e w o r l d ’s l e a d i n g sports centres.

L o c a t e d i n M a n a c o r, the Academy offers cutting-edge facilities and prides itself on its modern infrastructure.

The expansion will permit the Academy to meet the huge demand of players and fans who come to the facilities each year.

In a statement released to the press, the

Academy stated that the extension will create more jobs and ‘continue to drive the wealth of Manacor and the region by strengthening sports tourism in the Balearic Islands.’

Work will commence in the next few days and will also include the construction of a new roundabout and car park of 3,500 m2.

Road to Mallorca

GOLF TOUR: The final season tournament will be held in Mallorca for next four years.

THE next generation of golfing talent will battle it out for 15 European Tour cards at the Road to Mallorca.

Formerly known as the European Challenge Tour, the tournament is a seasonlong competition spanning 25 tournaments in 17 countries, which culminates at Club de Golf Alcanada in Mallorca between October 7 to 11.

Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr, the golf course will host the top 45 players on the order of merit, with the top 15 earning European Tour cards for the 2020 season.

Since its establishment in 1989, many

of the world’s finest players have competed at the European Challenge Tour which is now widely considered to be Europe’s top developmental tour. This has included Thomas Bjørn, Justin Rose, Ian Poulter and Brooks Koepka.

This year, the Federation for Golf in the Balearic Islands announced that the final season tournament will be held in Mallorca over the next four years.

This incredible deal moves the season finale away from the Middle East for the first time since 2012 to the Mediterranean - something that has not happened since 2003.

Electronic future THE City Council of Palma will drastically reduce the number of letters that they send out by post.

In the first step of an ambitious project which aims to permanently abolish postal delivery for official communications, the council will now deliver around 30,000 notifications electronically.

According to councillor Adrián García, the move will mean a saving of up to €450,000 each year in addition to saving a large amount of paper.

The new electronic system will account

for 90 per cent of the total decrees issued by the council including fines, minor contracts and licences to use public roads amongst others.

Palma Council plans to initiate more advances in electronic administration over the next four years in a bid to work more effectively. García explained that advances in technology had made it safer to send sensitive information to citizens, where “each person will now receive their notice through a virtual mail carrier.”

Eduardo Comas, the owner of Ca’n Comas tobacconist on Aragó Street, found out last Friday that one of his customers had scooped a €1 million prize.

AROUND 300 people held a protest in Portocolom last weekend to denounce the construction of a path which is to be built in the area.

The controversy for the work was unleashed last week when a company hired by Ports de les Illes Balears began to lay slabs of concrete to extend a pedestrian path that runs along Sa Bassa Nova by 300 metres.

Immediately, neighbours and groups such as Salvem Portocolom voiced their contempt for the construction, in the belief

that Sa Bassa Nova is one of the few areas of natural coastline that remains in the port.

In a statement at the rally, Miquel Àngel Lobo, spokesman for Salvem Portocolom, asked for the land to be restored to its previous state, adding that “there was no justification for the work since many people use it without problem.”

Due to the opposing opinions on the extension, a meeting will be held between Ports de les Illes Balears and the town hall to assess what should be done in the area and if the project should continue.

Knock-down for police chief THE Chief of Valldemossa Local Police was knocked down by a drunk driver last week, requiring an emergency operation on his leg.

The incident occurred around 11.30am on October 30, when Sebastià Bonet was talking to a technician responsible for the markings on Rector Joan Mir Street.

It was then that he saw a car approaching him, where he immediately raised his hand to signal the driver to stop. This was however too late, as Bonet was knocked to the ground and subsequently transferred to Mutua Balear hospital in Palma.

his tibia and fibula. Before his operation, the police chief admitted that the injury had come at a bad time, as many of his officers were off sick.

The driver, who is reported to be in his 60’s, tested positive for alcohol after failing a breath test and is very likely to lose his licence.

Bonet has served as the head of Valldemossa Local Police for four years and has achieved excellent results during his tenure. News of the incident spread quickly through the town causing outrage from the community. The mayor, Nadal Torres, as well as some councilors have expressed their concern about the health of the Chief.

Halloween nightmare A YOUNG man was violently assaulted outside of his workplace on Paseo Marítimo during Halloween night.

The incident took place at around 6am on Friday, November 1 in Palma when Juan Antonio Verdera was talking to a colleague outside of the nightclub where

he works. Turning around after hearing a scream, the 24-year-old man was stabbed in the neck and punched in the face. After calling for help, Verdera was rushed to Son Espases hospital, where he required 17 stitches to his neck.

The alleged aggressor fled from the scene, however officers from the National Police arrested the boy of Moroccan nationality a few

metres away from the Paseo Maritimo nightclub.

The victim confirmed that the man who had been arrested was the perpetrator of the crime, believing that it was a case of mistaken identity. Sharing a photograph on Facebook of the wound and his bloody shirt, Verdera explained that he works in public relations and that the attack has left him feeling frightened.

Rape of minor A MAN has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for the rape of his underage niece on a family estate in Pollensa.

The events date back to 2014, when the man took his then 1 4 - y e a r- o l d n i e c e t o go and look for snails.

Upon returning to her parent’s home, the defendant sat with the young girl and began to watch a pornographic film on his mobile, where he then started to masturbate.

As the young girl tried to escape, the defend a n t f o rc e d h i m s e l f upon his niece, sexually assaulting her.

During the trial, the defendant, who only answered his lawyer’s questions, denied having had sexual relations with his niece and said the complaint was only because he didn’t buy the girl a motorcycle.

The judges disagreed, explaining in their ruling that the v i c t i m ’s s t o r y w a s credible, handing the 50-year-old defendant a 12-year jail sentence.

He will also be required to pay the victim €15,000 in compensation for the psychological damages caused.

The young woman, who is now 19 years old, explained in her testimony that she has made a deal with her uncle to withdraw the complaint if he paid for her psychological treatment, but that the defendant did not comply.

In the five years following the assault, the young girl suffered from depression and entered psychiatric care after attempting suicide in 2017.

THE Council of Ministers has authorised a payment of €18 million in aid for the damages caused by the severe floods which ravaged the Llevant area in Mallorca last year.

Pedro Sánchez, the acting Prime Minister of Spain, took advantage of his electoral rally in Palma last week to make the announcement.

Accompanied by PSOE colleagues, the mayor of Palma and members of Congress, Sánchez confirmed that the state will cover a large proportion of the costs which were spent to repair the infrastructure and public facilities in the affected municipalities.

Stolen goods recovered THE Guardia Civil has arrested a man and woman for the alleged theft of two Joan Miró lithographs which were stolen from a property in Selva.

An investigation began after police received a complaint from a homeowner who reported that their original Miró litho-

graphs had been replaced with copies. Suspicion fell on a couple who were believed to have taken advantage of their relationship with the owner to change the prints. The first was found at an art gallery in Palma where it was on the verge of being sold to an art collector.

The second was recovered following statements from various art dealers which pointed towards the lithograph being available on the black market.

As a result of the arrests, officers managed to recover and return the artwork to its rightful owner in perfect condition.

Airport expansion A BRITISH multi-disciplinary company will spend the next six months finalising the plan for the development of Palma’s Son Sant Joan Airport.

Specialising in building, design, engineering and consultancy services, Arup has already begun to identify different uses for the developable land at the airport.

This consists of plots by the current multi-storey car park, the cargo terminal and maintenance hangars.

THE spookiest night of the year has come and gone and it was a tremendous triumph! The fantastic event hosted by Euro Weekly on the Costa del Sol is sure to go down in Halloween history! The party was terrifyingly amazing and good times were had by all.

Most importantly, at the time of going to press, we have raised a staggering €10,016 for ‘Ciudad de los Niños’ orphanage in Malaga, and we hope there will be more to come in.

We can’t believe how generous everybody was and what a fantastic outcome for the vulnerable children who need us! They will be so excited when they receive their clothes allowances, toy baskets and toiletry bags for Christmas. Together, we helped make children’s lives better. And that puts a huge smile on our faces!

Children and adults of all nationalities came to­ gether to have fun and raise money. Attendance was through the roof and people just kept arriving!

So many people really went all out with their scary costumes, we couldn’t believe how good everybody looked!

The decoration was fantastic thanks to all the help received. The guests were amazed when they walked into the venue to be met by a world of ghosts and witches and tombs and spiders. People were immersed in the world of Halloween with so many activities and things to do!

A variety of show­stopping creations were also dis­ played throughout the venue.

Children were greeted by Paw Patrol and Peppa Pig, had their photos taken inside the sports cars on show and then went inside to continue the fun with lucky dips, apple bobbing, and face painting. The pony rides were also very popular as were the sweet treats galore!

The food on offer was delicious including burgers and ribs from BBQ World and people were able to sit down at specially decorated tables to enjoy their meal. Our helpers were outstanding and made sure to keep everyone served and happy.

And not to forget the amazing performances that we all danced along to. So many entertainers and stars offered to help out and they brought the roof down! We even had a visit from the mayor of Fuen­ girola. Everybody danced to the tunes of Masquerade Duo, Frankie Valentine, Ronnie Howells and Danny Ef­ ford. What to do in the event of an emergency in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics.

In Spain there are in effect two groups which most people would understand as being ‘the police.’ The National Police (Policía Nacional) who have jurisdiction in the towns and cities and the Guardia Civil outside the towns and cities. The Local Police are employed by town halls; they basically deal with property found, and enforce local laws.

Whilst they have a power of arrest, when exercised they must take the arrested person to the National Police or Guardia Civil according to where the crime took place.

National Police and the Guardia Civil deal with all crimes, missing persons etc in their jurisdiction. The National Police also deal with all applications for immigration paperwork, NIEs, EU Citizens Registration and for non EU nationals, Residencia, etc.

The 24 hours national emergency numbers for Spanish speakers are: 091 - police, 061 - health emergencies 080 - firefighters.

By calling 902 102 112, but only when the perpetrator is unknown, one can give details of certain crimes, including:- burglaries, car theft, theft or loss of documents or belongings. Walks that heal INCA Hospital has launched its very o w n ‘ Wa l k s t h a t heal’ initiative, which will allow ICU patients to spend time outside.

After its success at the San Juan de Dios Hospital in Cordoba, patients who are admitted to the ICU will be able to spend 45 minutes in the sun under the supervision of medical team and family members.

Studies indicate the benefits of sunlight in the rehabilitation of those that are critically ill or seriously injured.

Any patient who has been in the ICU for more than 48 hours can be considered as a candidate for the project as long as it

does not pose a risk to their health. Medical personnel will also have to follow a protocol created by the San Juan de Dios Hospital which establishes several safety conditions.

Concha Zaforteza, Director of Nursing at Inca Hospital, explained that patients will be able to go onto the outdoor terraces because the protocol “requires an area without traffic or people and great temperature changes.”

Last week, the hospital took its first patient outside accompanied by his family and medical personnel. Zaforteza stated that it was an emotional experience for everyone involved, and one which they intend to repeat.

SON BUNYOLA: The luxury project has received another knock-back.

Holdback for Branson FURTHER changes have been requested for Sir Richard Branson’s new hotel at his Son Bunyola estate, being the latest knock-back for the luxury project.

Having previously insisted that architects modify the project for Branson’s hotel, the Council of Mallorca’s heritage commission has identified some specific matters that it wants addressing.

These relate to the restoration of its old olive press,

the type of material that is to be used in the reconstruction of its dry-stone terraces and the windows of the mansion.

The regional government’s environment ministry will also have to approve the type of earth.

Architects have already started work on adjusting the specifications for converting the mansion in Banyalbufar into a rural hotel and have included these requirements into the new specifications.

THE Balearic High Court has announced that it will adopt the same stance as the Supreme Court in Madrid towards the sentencing of immigrants.

Immigrants in the Balearic Islands who have committed a crime that carries a penalty of at least one year will now be automatically expulsed from Spain.

Until now, magistrates were guided by a European directive where expulsion was established on a case by case basis and which took several different factors into account.

This included whether a person was a resident in Spain, if they had family, their employment status and the links that they maintained with their country of origin. However,

the guidelines have now been changed after several sentences were handed down by the Supreme Court this year where expulsion was automatic, in view that a serious crime reflects a failure to adapt to society.

The first case considered by the Balearic court concerned a Moroccan man who was sentenced to three years in jail for drug trafficking.

He had been living legally in Spain for 10 years but did not have family and had spent six years without employment. The national government delegation has now withdrawn his residency permit and he has been expelled from Spain where he cannot return for four years. The same criteria will now be applied to all cases.

Scooter falls ACCIDEN TS involving electric scooters in Palma have risen dramatically in the last year.

According to Local Police, in 2016 and 2017 there were no incidents reported on electric scooters, however in 2018 there were nine and this year, there have already been 57 accidents. The data only includes incidents where officers intervened.

After an increasing amount of complaints from local residents, Palma police also recently launched a campaign to clamp down on electric scooters riders who break the law.

It is recommended that those riding a scooter should take out insurance, although the majority of users choose not to despite its cost of between €20 to €35 per year.

Backpack bandit OFFICERS from the National Police have arrested a known criminal as the alleged perpetrator of the theft of a tourist’s backpack on Playa de Palma.

The events occurred last week when a tourist was sunbathing, using his rucksack as a pillow to prevent it from being stolen.

The thief pushed the victim retrieving the bag, running away with it.

The man was chased by the victim and several other people but managed to es-

cape after threatening them with a 15cm blade.

The following day, the same man targeted another tourist in the same area, taking advantage of the fact that they were swimming in the sea.

His attempt failed, with officers from the National Police finally arresting the man.

The alleged perpetrator is known to police officers and has a long history of arrests for crimes that include drug trafficking, domestic abuse, sexual assault and robberies with force.

Bookstore closes after 40 years A HISTORICAL bookstore in Palma will close its doors after more than 40 years in business.

The MM bookshop on Calle Reina Esclaramunda is considered to be one of the oldest in the capital, well-known for its sale of school books to children in the neighbourhood.

Its owner, Jaume Ramis,

decided to close down the store after a heavy fall in sales which he attributes to the internet which “has favoured a compulsive way of buying that we are not able to compete with.”

In its last few days of being open, Ramis has put all books, stationery and office supplies on sale with discounts of up to 50 per cent.

Rat invasion RESIDENTS living in Plaza de Toros have asked Palma City Council to do more to clean up the neighbourhood.

The council has received a large number of complaints from people who are fed up with the presence of rats in the streets which roam freely on public roads.

In Palma, two types of rodents cohabitate with the community, including the sewer rat which carries multiple diseases.

The second city dweller is the black rat, which nests in trees and are usually a serious problem for farmers as they eat a wide range of agricultural crops.

Earlier this year, Pedro Morell, the Director of the Son Reus animal protection centre, recognised that there were more rats on the streets in Palma because the city had become dirtier.

He said that over the past four to five years, rats have been coming to the surface because more food is available here than in the sewers, which accumulates around rubbish containers and litter bins.

Spanish elections impending MILLIONS of expectant viewers tuned in to Spanish television to watch the electoral debate on M o n d a y. W i t h e l e c t i o n s coming up on Sunday, November 10, the presidential candidates were keen to win over voters.

The five candidates fiercely defended their corners in a debate that lasted three hours. But many viewers were left disappointed after the contenders reverted to cheap shots and props.

Since elections in April, Spanish parties haven’t been able to form a coalition. Thus, resulting in yet another election, in which candidates already seem opposed to working together.

Kitty rescue A C AT h a s b e e n re s c u e d f ro m a pontoon in the port of Palma after spending four days out at sea.

The Port Police in Palma and the Wildlife Management Service spent several days trying to rescue the black cat which was spotted by a passer-by who raised the alarm to authorities.

The rescue was complex, as when boats approached the pontoon, the cat became frightened and hid. Officers then decided an alternative plan, placing food and water inside a cage

on the barge, where the cat was observed by cameras back at the control centre. Finally, the cat entered inside and was taken back safely to the dock, with all those involved going out of their way to save the animal.

An officer is handling the paperwork with a veterinarian, where it is hoped that she will be adopted. In honour of the woman who saw her on the pontoon, the cat has been named Stella.

How the animal ended up in such a position will remain a mystery.

Steve was also keen to point out that there is a newly erected monument in Plymouth for the Merchant Navy and another for the RAF where wreaths of poppies are placed.

Nathan Wood, 18, Fife Nathan has recently finished training for the Royal Navy, at HMS Raleigh in Plymouth.

During his training, they also study the history of the Navy and the events that took place.

Both his grandfathers were in the Navy and fought in the Second World War. “These guys were my heroes. Remembrance Day gives me a time to show my respect, remember what the Forces did for us and pray for the lives that were lost.”

This year’s appeal also consists of Operation Poppy that sees celebrities go undercover, assisting collectors in helping raise awareness for the charity and their fundraising work.

THE Spanish supermarket chain Dia has just announced that it has plans to expand and wants to fol­ low the lead of its Russian counter­ part in order to become market leader.

It shares an owner and President (Stephan Du Charme), with Russian chain X5 Retail which was only founded in 1995 but now has an annual turnover in excess of €21.5 billion.

The Russian success compares to Dia which has faced losses over the past 18 months, but with a new business plan about to be initiated it has high hopes for the future.

Repsol results looking good RECOGNISED as the most successful oil company in Spain, Repsol record­ ed a profit of €1.466 billion for the first nine months of the year and wants to use €1.2 billion for divi­ dends.

The actual gross profit is down 32 per cent from the previous year but that figure included significant capi­ tal gains from sales and this in­ cludes a decrease in the value of oil stock held.

The adjusted figure therefore shows it’s just €100 million (5 per cent) down on 2018 which is a good

Whilst oil extraction and explo­ ration have seen a slow­down (thanks in part to problems in Libya), the other area of the business which includes refining as well as sales of gas and electricity are looking very strong proving that diversification can be good for the balance sheet.

The other area which is very encour­ aging is the growth of operating cash flow which is up by 22 per cent to a

very significant €4.074 billion, mean­ ing that the underlying business is both thriving and secure. This is why, shareholders can expect that the 2020 dividend could total €1 per unit held in a combination of cash and shares and some of this is thanks to the decision of the board for a 5 per cent amortization of existing share capital.

Looking forward, it is increasing its ability to generate electricity from wind and solar power and looks to break the electricity cus­ tomer base of one million soon.

Profits down AIRLINE group IAG which owns Aer Lingus, BA, Iberia and Vueling has revealed that the recent strike by pi­ lots at British Airways in September cut its profits during the third quar­ ter of this year.

Willie Walsh, IAG Chief Executive Officer, said: “In quarter three we’re reporting an operating profit of €1,425 million before exceptional items, down from €1,530 million last year.

“These are good underlying re­ sults. As we said in September, our performance has been affected by industrial action by pilots’ union BALPA and other disruption includ­ ing threatened strikes by Heathrow airport employees.”

Two car giants merge AS anticipated, the PSA and FCA Groups of car manufacturers have announced their merger which will mean they become the fourth largest producer of cars in the world.

Between them, they produce more than 11 brands including Fiat, Peugeot, Citroën and Opel as well as a number of commercial vehicles.

The decision was made in order to increase ef­ ficiency and reduce costs by up to €3.7 billion as

rationalisation takes place.

Spain has quite an efficient manufacturing base and produces PSA models in Vigo, Zaragoza and Madrid whilst FCA has no manufacturing base in the country but it is known that their Ital­ ian sites are not particularly cost effective.

The Spanish operation has been completely overhauled in the last 24 months and has turned out high volumes with significant cost reductions.

Euro EUR/GBP: Down from £0.89 to £0.86 EUR/USD: Up from $1.09 to $1.10 Trade in the euro was mixed in October as positive Brexit news clashed with persistently gloomy data and fears of a looming reces­ sion in Germany.

The tone of Eurozone data has remained overwhelmingly nega­ tive over the past couple of months, with lacklustre inflation and PMI figures applying pressure to the single currency.

However, in taking some cues from Brexit in October the euro was still able to eke out some modest support, with hopes that the UK would avoid a no­deal sce­ nario buoying EUR sentiment.

We expect the single currency to follow a similar trend through November, with confirmation that

Currency outlook: Pound surges on Brexit progress, US dollar slumps

BREXIT JITTERS: Driving GBP exchange rates to new multi-year lows.

Germany entered a recession in the third quarter being offset by lingering Brexit optimism.

Pound GBP/EUR: Up from €1.12 to €1.15 GBP/USD: Up from $1.22 to $1.28

October was dominated by a dramatic jump in the pound, with the currency roaring back to life as a result of positive progress in Brexit.

This came as Boris Johnson miraculously managed to secure a

new Brexit deal from the EU ­ a surprising development given pre­ vious reports that talks were on the verge of collapse.

However, Johnson has strug­ gled to get his new deal over the finishing line, with the PM forced to request another Brexit exten­ sion after he failed to get MPs to back the deal. Sterling stalled in the latter half of the month as a result.

Looking ahead, with Brexit de­ layed but unresolved and the threat of a general election loom­ ing, it looks like we’re all set for another period of uncertainty. This may take its toll on the pound through the remainder of 2019.

US Dollar USD/GBP: Down from £0.81 to £0.77

USD/EUR: Down from €0.91 to €0.90 The US dollar was charac­ terised by broad weakness over the past month as a risk­on mood prevailed, limiting demand for the safe­haven ‘Greenback.’

This came amidst positive Brexit headlines and US­China trade optimism, with the two powers coming close to finalising a preliminary trade deal.

However, the US dollar also faced pressure on the domestic front, with a sharp slowdown in the US manufacturing sector firming expectations of an Octo­ ber rate cut from the Federal Re­ serve.

Going forward, the US dollar will face further pressure in the coming weeks if US data contin­ ues to print poorly.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT WELL, here we go again. Back on the ‘campaign trail’! Dontcha just wish they were all back on the ‘Old Chisolm Trail’ and disappearing over the horizon - forever?

They are all liars, generally by blatant omis­ sion. One truth you can be assured of is that when you hear a politician tell you something has been made ‘absolutely clear,’ you can bet your bottom dollar it’s about as clear as a pea soup’er at midnight.

No, the only clarity to emerge from this lot is that they are a bunch of self­indulgent, incom­ petent, immature con merchants, interested in nothing further than the preservation of their own utterly worthless skins and unworthy to even represent a flagpole ­ leave alone the flags that adorn them.

Come back Mr Fawkes, all is forgiven. To think in days of yore we actually looked up to this rabble, believing they were the undis­ putable champions of our once great country?

How blindly we followed their decisions and ‘leadership’ and were utterly convinced that mere mortals like us could never hope to under­ stand the workings of ‘The House’ with its proud history and pomp, which has endured over hundreds of years.

POLITICIANS: Terrified of standing up to political correctness and cultural threats.

Well we do now. Our present day politicians are all a bunch of disgraceful juvenile cess pit dwellers. They are in fact the traitorous and highly dangerous ‘enemy within.’ Most of them would rather side with our opponents than risk losing their privileged positions or a few votes.

They are terrified of standing up to the politi­

cal correctness, cultural threats and the ever in­ creasing denial of freedom of speech, which threatens to stifle today’s ingenious GB citizens.

As far as this ol’ boy is concerned I’ve never ac­ tually respected any of them. Consequently I’ve never voted in my life.

Only this week there was yet another exam­

ple of their incompetence and arrogant under­ estimation of our intelligence. The Labour con­ tingency has been ranting on about lowering the voting age to 16. This is of course a blatant effort to gain votes from naive youngsters who have never lived under the left, are impressed

by Corbyn’s rhetoric and promises of free hand­ outs and consequently a mite easier to con than many of their adult compatriots. ‘Young people of today are perfectly capable of making deci­ sions and taking actions that may affect their fu­ ture’, the left blathers on.

They are of course the same lot who are try­ ing to return the Daesh bride Shamima Begum to the UK, because she was ‘too young to know what she was doing!’ Get my drift? Nope. Sorry folks, you simply can’t trust, or believe anything that any of them say.

Even the so called ‘deal’ that Johnson keeps on about still leaves us firmly entwined with his power mad fellow cronies across the channel. If I were to vote at all it would be for The Brexit Party. Problem is that could put Corbyn and Di­ ana Abbott in Number 10 (providing she can count that high!) Oh for a Winston in our hour of need!

The Consular corps in Malaga representing citizens of 43 dif­ ferent nations and 40 per cent of the total provincial population, had to benefit from this devel­ opment opportunity and some of us, Consuls of at least 15 countries, have decided to at­ tend this training course and in so doing, be aware of the needs and priorities of our region, ad­ dressing key points such as so­ cial integration, increasing the quality of life in our cities, and supporting co­existence, city governance and city planning, with a strategic and sustainable development and tourism plan, whilst implementing the targets laid down in the 2030 Agenda.

MILLENIALS (those born between 1980 and the mid-1990s and who, from next year, are expected to be the dominant age sector in the global workforce for the first time), are reportedly fuelling a crisis in the workplace.

Young employees flit from company to company, unwilling to stay in any job that doesn’t meet their expectations. Like the NHS and police work, for example.

Police forces preparing for the govern­ ment’s ambitious recruitment drive have identified a formidable challenge in hiring millennials. Today’s recruits seem to have been ‘wrapped in cotton wool,’ are rou­ tinely ‘shocked’ that police officers are ex­ pected to work nights and weekends, and ‘do not like confrontation.’

For some, this is ‘Generation Entitle­ ment.’ For others, millenials are simply re­ sponding to the world they were born in­

MILLENIALS: Desire a better work/life balance and training. to: one of peace and prosperity. They seem to have it all ­ a better work/life bal­ ance and training, for instance ­ and there are no rules of how to deal with it be­ cause, basically, we’ve never been here before.

Most notable among millenials is the shift from a desire for ‘things’ to a desire for ‘experiences.’ But whether it’s social media, the selfie craze, influencers or the inability to stick with one job for more than five minutes, what you end up with is a generation that is constantly seeking to add experiences, apparently without much regard to which have value and which don’t. You don’t gain ‘experiences’ by taking the same damn shot as every­ body else has taken of Mykonos or the Grand Canyon through the lens of a phone (though they think you do).

Fundamentally, the desire for a better work/life balance and training is sound and works for whatever generation we’re talking about. But ultimately, for some jobs, we need people dedicated to their vocation, who are willing to see past crea­ ture comforts because they want to do what they think is right, even if it means personal hardship.

Perhaps there’s a lack of that going around in this Brexit/Trump era, and it’s not just confined to the millennials...

Northern soul TUCKED away in one of Spain’s most unexplored corners is Oviedo, the bourgeois capital of As­ turias. This bustling me­ tropolis has always been relatively wealthy, so of­ ten stands in sharp con­ trast to the rest of the re­ gion.

Perched between the Cantabrian Mountains and the Bay of Biscay, Oviedo is a town that has managed to perfectly balance the best ele­ ments of its past and pre­ sent. The stunning Cathedral of San Salvador takes pride of place in the town centre, while the picturesque churches of San Miguel de Lillo and Santa Maria del Naranco are located on hills on the outskirts of the town, but a regular bus service can take you to them both.

OCTOBER and at the air show promoted as the biggest business aviation show in the world Gulfstream added to its fleet of six pri­ vate and business jet models with the presen­ tation of the all­new G700 at the NBAA­BACE air show in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. The launch of the G700 is certainly an event as is the NBAA­BACE which over three days at­ tracted some 23,000 aviation professionals from all over the world. Gulfstream’s G700 will carry up to 19 passengers and sleep 10. In day­ light passengers will be able to view the world through one of 20 panoramic oval windows, flying at an altitude of 15,545 metres [51,000 feet], a commercial airliner will fly at a far low­ er altitude in fact and have a cabin pressure far low than the G700.

Passengers in the G700 will experience at 15,545 metres a cabin pressure equivalent to 1,478. Besides the lowest cabin altitude the cabin is ‘whisper­quiet’ and filled with fresh air. The lighting on board is also designed to promote a healthy experience with the lighting system that mimics the circadian rhythm from sunrise to sunset, further enhancing the flight

Leaving aside the flight deck, and concen­ trating on the cabin the G700 boats the tallest, widest and longest cabin in the industry. MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I WAS in the UK last week and, once again, was reminded why I love living here! Hour journeys taking two and a half hours because the M25 was practi­ cally redundant just after the ribbon cutting ceremony. A simple cup of cof­ fee costing more than a meal here.

OK maybe that’s a slight exaggeration but £6 for two coffees is almost the price of a menu del dia. Oh and the weather was, well, English. I went to a couple of places to eat. Nando’s was one where I actually like the food and, like many, they have free WiFI. But, before you can use their WiFi you have to give them shedloads of in­ formation and agree to their terms which, to be honest, I can’t be arsed to read. So, after going through that I log on successfully, but the signal is so weak that I can’t even check my email.

All I get is the spinning ‘I’m really try­ ing’ wheel. So now I go back to 4G and as soon as I turn oFf the Nando’s WiFi

the first email I get is from them! An email I couldn’t even receive whilst us­ ing their WiFi! This email tells me that I’m now just one click from activating my Nando’s account. I don’t want a Nando’s account thank you. I’m not clicking anything. It also informs me the benefits of said account is I can order online for delivery. Surely it will be cold by the time it gets to Spain!

And here is the best bit ­ I can con­ nect to their WiFi whenever I fancy ­ ex­ cept I can’t because the signal is crap!!!

Another thing I noticed in a few places is how waiters, in particular, re­ act when you are paying with a credit card. They give you the machine and then the strangest thing happens when they ask you to put in your pin number.

If they are sort of standing in the vicinity of the machine it almost looks like we are about to play a game of hide and seek. In one place I thought he was going to pull out a blindfold to cover his eyes. It’s hard to explain, but next time you pay a bill at a restaurant table, watch how your server reacts when you go to enter your pin number. It’s hilari­ ous! I think the next time it happens I’m going to put the tablecloth over my head and the machine!

MEAT FREE ESCHEWING meat on moral grounds is 100 per cent applaudable as most of the animals we eat today live in misery and die miserably so we can pick up bargains in supermarkets.

That’s one thing, and I admire the vegetari­ ans who shun bacon sandwiches ­ surely one of life’s greatest culinary inventions ­ because they don’t want Piglet or Babe on their con­ sciences.

Nevertheless, the fact remains that we are omnivores with bodies and innards designed to eat a little bit of everything, which brings me to vegans. My vegetarian friends are all normal, but the vegans verge on the hysteri­ cal and accusatory. Imagine my pleasure, then, on reading recently that vegans are prone to depression and ­ wait for it ­ cannabis. Says it all, as far as I’m concerned but at least they can smoke it or make bis­ cuits with it safe in the knowledge that no an­ imals were involved in its production.

Over indulgence I READ in the Euro Weekly News not long ago that the Benidorm fiestas organisers want to shorten the route for ‘peñas’ clubs’ pa­ rade on the first day.

Most are tipsy before the parade starts and blind drunk by the time it finishes, it seemed from the article.

I have lived for many years in the Mari­ na Baja although not in Benidorm and from what I have seen, rowdiness and over­indulgence in alcohol are fiestas req­ uisites. It is usually good­humoured and in all my time here, I haven’t seen conflict or anything approaching a fight.

The piece you printed came to mind on reading about a drunken British cou­ ple tussling and punching each other on the Alicante airport shuttle bus taking them to the terminal.bThe locals here might occasionally drink too much but they just get merrier, not like the British and northern Europeans who get morose and then aggressive.

For those who don’t know, a couple of weeks ago a ‘hypoxia’ event occurred. In sim­ ple terms, the water of the lagoon (Editor’s note: the Mar Menor is off the coast of Mur­ cia) ran out of oxygen. The result was a dev­ astating loss of wildlife.

Literally tons of fish and marine life died and covered the beaches, as well as further polluting the waters. We are in danger of turning it into a dead sea unless something is done quickly. Sewage systems need to be im­ proved. Farmers should be banned from us­ ing slurry and other fertilisers.

HYDRAULIC fracturing - commonly known as fracking - has recently come under the spotlight after the government halted the activity in the UK. This technique has been the subject of controversy for many years. Scientists and ecologists alike believe fracking to be highly polluting and dangerous for society and the environment.

To be aware of the risks, it’s important to understand how the process works. Fracking begins with drilling down into the earth and injecting fluids at a very high pressure. The liquid is primarily water but it also contains sand, chemicals and thickening agents.

This fluid creates cracks in the deep-rock formations and natural gas will flow freely, allowing companies to collect it.

Natural gas helps reduce greenhouse gasses as it replaces coal and burns cleaner, emitting only half as much carbon dioxide. However, experts believe this benefit is outweighed by the environmental impacts of the activity.

The main problem is the contamination of surface and underground water with chemicals scientists believe to be carcinogenic. Increased earthquakes are another by-product and, in the UK, multiple earth tremors were triggered, finally causing work to halt.

In Spain, the practice is mostly prohibited and in 2016, the five companies with licences gave them up freely. In the UK, the practice has now been prohibited after £32 million was spent with no energy in return.

Winter-proof skin AUTUMN has settled in, and after mak­ ing itself comfortable, it is finally bring­ ing colder temperatures. For many, the cooler temperature is a welcome relief to the blazing heat and humidity of the summer. But the biggest organ in the body ­ the skin ­ has already started getting goose bumps.

Skin is our protection against external conditions and forms a protective barri­ er over the body’s surface. The epider­ mis is the outermost layer and makes sure to keep water in the body and in­ fectious germs from entering.

Seasonal changes can irritate and ex­ acerbate existing skin conditions. A big percentage of the population is affected by some type of skin ailment in varying degrees of severity. Wind and cold ag­ gravates dry and inflamed skin. Existing conditions can react badly to changes in routine, for example, more layers of clothing and temperature variations from outdoors to indoors.

For people who experience rosacea, the summer months can be a bad time of year. On the other hand, a wintery cli­

mate can be problematic for eczema, psoriasis and acne. Even people with a healthy dermis will notice red cheeks, taut skin and cracked lips. People with pre­existing problems will often experi­ ence flare­ups.

Cold temperatures make the skin’s pores tighter and reduces blood circula­ tion, thus diminishing natural oils known as sebum. Sebum is essential in forming a protective layer and traps moisture to avoid the skin from drying out.

Consequences of less sebum are seen by acne sufferers; whose skin depends on the substance to block the entry of bacteria in pores. During the winter, bacteria penetrates pores easily and can result in outbreaks. Patients who have to deal with eczema, psoriasis and atopic dermatitis generally complain about increased irritation, flaky skin and inflammation.

Although the effects of winter cannot be completely avoided, experts do rec­ ommend following a series of habits that can benefit the skin.

An important thing to avoid is scald­

ing hot baths and showers as the heat strips the skin of its natural oils. A short­ er and cooler shower will help and using a moisturising cream straight after­ wards is a must.

Exposure to hot environments such as air­conditioned cars or rooms with dry air can further de­ hydrate the epidermis. A conscious effort should be made to drink plenty of water and supplement­ ing diet with Omega 3 and 6 oils can reduce inflammation. Cosying up to the radiator or fireplace will al­ so cause dryness, a humidifier will combat this and add moisture to the home.

A few other tips to fight the frost include picking a soothing lip balm, ditching irritating clothing and al­ ways wearing gloves to protect hands. Wash­ ing up gloves are again advised when touching chemicals or grease.

IN a world of increasing harm­ ful substances and plastic waste, it is important to be aware of endocrine disruptors.

These disruptors are chemicals that can interfere with the body’s hormonal balance. At certain doses they can cause very grave illnesses and conse­ quences on an otherwise healthy person. Ailments can include infertility, cancer, thy­ roid problems, loss of memory, autism, diabetes and obesity.

The danger with endocrine disruptors is that we are con­ stantly surrounded by them.

Chemicals in common house­ hold objects contain the dan­ gerous substances. One of the most studied disruptors is Bisphenol A or BPA. It can be found in plastic bottles, food containers, fragrances, cleaning products, DVDs, the lining of

food cans, receipts and toys, among others.

BPA mimics oestrogen and has hormone­like properties.

The use of this plastic has been studied after alarm was raised in the scientific world. The EU put in place regulations and banned its use in baby bottles, although the European Food Safety Authority has declared that the substance poses no threat to consumers of any age.

However, many researchers continue to explain the risks as­ sociated with this endocrine dis­ ruptor and in 2017 the Euro­ pean Chemicals Agency announced that BPA should be included as a substance of high concern. Babies and young chil­ dren could be among the most affected, as at this young age hormones play a big role in de­ velopment.

BUYING a property in Spain comes with all the challenges you would expect of purchasing a house, plus a few hundred more.

Complicated laws that are hard to manage plus the difficulty of negotiating in another language, are no small feat to overcome.

No one can argue with the facts: becoming a homeowner in Spain deserves a medal. If you managed to get your

hands on a piece of the property market without a glitch, consider yourself one of the lucky ones.

However, it is important to note that the mortgage is not the only big expense. Many other parts of the process can cost a pretty penny and it is wise to be prepared. Experts advise having at least 10 to 12 per cent of the purchase price in savings.

This money will come in handy for all the necessary expenses that follow the deci-

sion to buy. Bills will depend on the property being new or second-hand and the asking price.

Experts have compiled a list of what to expect and the amount it could cost a prospective buyer in Spain in 2019.

The Notary will need to be considered for granting the deed of sale. Tariffs are set by the government and oscillate between €600 and €900, depending on the price of the house.

The Land Registry follows and consists of registering the deeds you now have. Fees are also regulated and, although they can vary, are around the €400 to €650 mark.

Taxes linked to the sale can mean spending a large sum of cash. VAT is the most notable and in 2019 currently stands at 10 per cent. For a property costing €250,000 the VAT would amount to €25,000.

TO BUY OR NOT TO BUY: Buyers are faced with big expenses.

Added tax is paid for the process of Documenting Legal Acts. For second-hand homes the applied tax is the Property Transfer Tax that ranges between 6 and 10 per cent. If the housing is subsidised or will host large families, rates will generally be reduced.

Once taxes and legal paperwork are out of the way, it’s time to get down to business

with the mortgage. First of all, to apply for a mortgage an appraiser will have to value the property so that the bank can calculate the percentage of finance.

Banks are lending about 80 per cent of the appraisal value, although it could be up to the full 100. The appraisal maintains validity for six months since being issued and

costs between €300-600.

Following the new Mortgage Law passed in June 2019, the bank must cover the rest of the expenses that include: Tax on Documented Legal Acts, the Property Registry and Notary fees.

This legislation was welcomed by homeowners and relieves buyers of a substantial financial burden.

Letting it shine AS days get shorter and darker, one thing is for sure: not even summer in Spain can

last forever!

One aspect that most of us forget about is the impor­ tance of lighting. In winter,

there is less natural light il­ luminating our homes.

Whilst this may feel cosy at times, it can easily start to feel dark and dreary. Lucki­ ly, there are a few small tweaks that can easily make a room feel brighter.

When looking at light­ bulbs, an essential concept to take into account is lumi­ nance. Luminance is the in­ tensity of lights that comes from a particular point and is measured in a unit called lux. For example, a clear day has between 80,000 to 100,000 lux, whereas a cloudy winter day has only 3,000.

When considering the lighting for different rooms, it is advised to look at guide­ lines suggested by architects and lighting experts. This will help create the right feel for each space and make sure there is enough light for activities such as

cooking or reading.

A good tip to keep spaces feeling light is to paint walls and ceilings white. This is how light is able to reflect its luminance. Whenever walls are painted a darker colour, a white ceiling will also help in keeping some brightness as dark colours absorb light.

Supposing that renovating is an option, doors with glass will let light flow. If a solid door leading to a dark­ er room is replaced with glass, it will look stylish and allow sun to shine through.

Glass shower doors increase luminosity in bathrooms and avoid shower spaces feeling gloomy.

When doors or windows are replaced, use as much vertical space as possible. If you have high ceilings, let the doors go all the way to the top for optimal bright­ ness.

SEAT Tarraco ROAD TEST

by Nick Fletcher THE Tarraco is the latest SUV model in the S E AT r a n g e , a s p a cious family-orientated seven-seater competing for sales in one of the toughest sectors of the market.

Yet the Spanish manufac­ turer ­ part of the giant VW­ Audi Group ­ need have no worries about making an im­

pact, the Tarraco immediate­ ly impresses with its space, driving dynamics and high levels of standard equip­ ment.

Prices start at €32,684 (£28,230) for entry versions which still have features such as seven seats, rear parking sensors, alloy wheels, digital cockpit, cruise control and a touch­screen infotainment unit with smartphone inte­ gration. In all there are four trim levels each adding more equipment.

My mid­range SE Technol­ ogy version, priced at €35,954 (£31,055) adds vari­ ous other features including sat­nav, privacy glass, larger alloy wheels, enhanced con­ nectivity and even aircraft­ style drop­down tables.

Safety kit includes driver­at­ tention alert and lane­keep assist.

Powered by a 2.0­litre diesel engine (petrol versions

are also avail­ able) it offers 148 hp and was mated to a six­speed manual gear­ box.

Top speed is 202 kph (126 mph), the 0­100 kph time is 9.8 sec­ onds and emissions 129 g/km. Average fuel econ­ omy is 16.3 kpl (46 mpg).

Exterior styling is quite el­ egant and inside, Tarraco im­ presses with its space.

There is good head and leg rooms for front and mid­ row occupants and the while the two rear seats are larger than some in the class, they are still really for children. With five seats oc­ cupied, boot space is sub­ stantial at 700 litres and with the middle­row folded down, you get a van­like 1,775 litres.

With sliding mid­row seats, good interior stowage space, variable level boot floor and roof rails, the Tar­

raco earns full marks for practicality.

On the road, the car drives fluently and the firm suspen­

sion set­up delivers assured cornering though ride com­ fort does suffer slightly on rougher roads.

Rivals in the sector include the Skoda Kodiaq (larger load space) and Peugeot 5008 (smoother ride) but overall, the new Tarraco has enough of its own stand­out characteristics to take on the best that the class has to of­ fer.

Chelsea v Ajax EIGHT goals, two red cards, two penalties and a three­goal comeback made an exciting game between Chelsea and Ajax on Tuesday night in the Champions League.

The match took place at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge and was expected to be an exciting game, but fans got more than they must have bargained for.

The first half was eventful enough after Quincy Promes’ free kick was in­ advertently diverted into his own goal by Tammy Abraham within just four minutes whilst Jorginho equalised from the penalty spot just 67 seconds later after Christian Pulisic was clumsily taken down in the penalty area.

Before Chelsea knew it, Ajax was suddenly 3­1 up. Hakim Ziyech, was instrumental to both the second and third goals.

The first came as Promes headed home from Ziyech’s sublime cross and the second was a freak goal. Ziyech’s whipped free­kick smashed off the far post and hit

ROUND UP THE Champions League qualify­ ing matches had some interest­ ing results on Tuesday evening just before we went to press.

Holders Liverpool beat KRC Genk 2­1 at Anfield with Wijnal­ dum scoring in the 14th minute before Samatta equalised just before half time ­ Oxlade Cham­ berlain ensured Group E maxi­ mum points though for the cur­ rent holders scoring on the 53rd minute. Valencia did well though for Spanish teams win­ ning 4­1 against French side Lille in Group H. Barcelona however had a bit of a shocker in Group F ­ whilst at home they could only draw against Slavia Prague in a game you would have expected them to win.

Dortmund and Inter Milan clashed in their group with a very exciting game that provided five goals seeing a 3­2 victory for the German club against the rat­ ed Italian side. Napoli didn’t do much better in Europe for their fans as they could only manage a 1­1 draw at home against Aus­ trians RB Salzberg.

He tried to run it out but ref Garces did not like England in the break­ down. Penalty for Pollard to launch at the posts and he settled his nerves and scored 0­3.

England were quite frankly all over the place.

England though won a line out cleanly and start­ ed putting some familiar carrying patterns to­ gether in the 22 and won a penalty after Kolbe stuck his hands in on the floor.

England finally got a toe­hold and then man­ gled receiving the restart to give SA a scrum in the England half. England held it up before SA popped up on their loose­head side and Garces gave a penalty to South Africa. Pollard struck again 3­6 although it looked a suspect penalty.

England secured the ball and a good carry from Underhill got them over the gainline and in­ to the Bok 22. Many more carries followed and they were up to five metres but were repelled constantly by the green wall. There was a penal­ ty coming for England but still they pounded near the line.

Ford sent it deep to get the second half under­ way and the ball was returned to touch. Court­ ney Lawes was off for George Kruis. Eddie Jones clearly wanted some more in­tight shutdown from his pack for the second period clearly.

Faf De Klerk was putting in a defensive perfor­ mance, ferocious across the whole defensive line as his team repelled everything England tried, it was all very lateral and in the end England knocked on. Kitschoff and Koch were on before the scrum and SA pack powered the England

eight again for another penalty. Pollard struck again 6­15. SA were kicking England to death.

Now 10 minutes in to the second half from the lineout it was an SA knock­on and England fi­ nally won their own scrum penalty. Farrell lined up to kick sticks and scored 9­15.

Elliot Daly was turned just after by a Le Roux kick and his return to touch was sliced horribly.

SA caught and drove the lineout and won a penalty at the maul and Pollard once again had the chance to pull his team away immediately af­ ter England got back into the game and did so by striking home yet another kick. it was a nine point lead with a quarter to go but then England from the restart saw Tuilagi absolutely smash Vermeulen as he gathered and then the SA num­ ber 8 hung on and Garces awarded the penalty.

Farrell slotted it to go 12­18 but time was run­ ning out now for England.

68 minutes saw what looked like the deciding factor of the game as SA got a penalty on Eng­ land’s 10m line which was won without incident.

Le Roux was in the line again and sent a probing chip into the corner which Daly gathered but England were forced to exit. On the return Am gathered a chip from Mapimpi and they were in­ to the 22 and Am threw a lovely no look pop back to Mapimpi and he was in. The try was giv­ en, the first they have ever scored in a World Cup final. With the conversion extras the score moved onto 12­25.

England’s World Cup dreams were over.

SIXTH TIME CHAMPION

IT was lights out and away they went in the US Grand Prix. The front runners got away well and Bottas came out on top, but Albon and Sainz veered off and made contact, but returned to the track at Austin, Texas.

Then Hamilton passed Leclerc and Vettel, Norris moved ahead of Ricciardo. Vettel was strug­

gling already. Ferrari did not seem to have fired their tyres up,

Leclerc was fourth and Vet­ tel sixth. Vettel was com­ plaining of damage. Anoth­ er who had some was Albon,who had already come into the pits, having been squeezed by Sainz and veering off the track.

But the top two looked un­ scathed ­ Bottas lead from Verstappen, with Hamilton in third. Vettel had also been overtaken by Ricciar­ do, leaving the German in seventh.

Sainz and Albon went un­ der investigation by the stewards over a first­turn collision. There was plenty of movement in pecking or­ ders ­ Raikkonen had gained six places since the

start, and he was up to 11th. Bottas lead by 1.3 sec­ onds from Verstappen, with Hamilton third.

Lap 8. More woe for Vet­ tel ­ his rear suspension had gone, and he slid off the track. Ricciardo passed Nor­ ris and moved into fifth.

That suspension failure ended his involvement on lap 11 in this Grand Prix. To­ wards the back, Perez took advantage of a Giovinazzi lock­up at turn 12 to sneak ahead of him into 14th.

By lap 17 Bottas set a new fastest lap for the race on lap 16, as Hamilton had his one­stop strategy con­ firmed by his team. Mean­ while Albon was told by his

team that they had spotted some damage to the car, and he was struggling back down in 13th.

Lap 26. Bottas lead by five seconds from Verstap­ pen, with Hamilton eight seconds further back in third. Leclerc was fourth, 24 seconds off the lead, with Ricciardo fifth.

A swift Hamilton lap 26 took a 2.7 seconds chunk out of Bottas’s lead.

With 20 laps to go with tyre strategy playing out Hamilton now lead, but he was beginning to question his tyres but it didn’t really matter. Hamilton finished second to become sixth time world champion!
