The Diputacion de Almeria said the aim was to have fibre optic across the province, referring to it as another tool for fighting depopulation. The deputy with responsibility for measures on addressing depopulation, Fernando Gimenez, said he was working w i t h Ne w Te c h no lo g y d ep u ty Domingo Fernandez and with fibre optic operators. Gimenez explained that as an initial step the provincial administration has carried out an exhaustive study on existing cover, to assess which municipalities already have fibre optic, which don’t, and which are the areas where installation will present the most complications. The d e p u t y m a i n t a in ed it is th e Diputacion’s firm intention to get the fibre optic initiative up and running. “One of the main objectives we set out from the first moment was to drive measures aimed at fixing population in our municipalities,” he commented. “In order that the inhabitants of the smallest municipalities can contemplate starting a business, and so those already set up can function with all the guarantees, the province needs a fibre optic network which allows work and underta k i n g s i n a n y p o in t, ” h e stressed.
