MARCH OF THOUSANDS MORE than 4,000 people took part in a solidarity demonstration in Palma on Sunday (October 20) to denounce the jailing of Catalan separatist leaders. The protestors marched down Passeig des Born to the Consolat de Mar, where they read a manifesto in which demanded the release of jailed politicians and activists, announcing that new demonstrations would take place in the next few days. Outside of the government headquarters there was a large police presence, halting protestors converging onto the Paseo Marítimo and disrupting traffic. The march was organised by the Balearic Cultural Work, the Sobiranista Assembly of Mallorca, Més and Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya and other independent entities. The

organiser’s manifesto was read by journalist, Glòria Franquet, stating that “we will continue to
take to the streets demanding the freedom of all political prisoners and the return of exiles.”

Alleged murderer jailed RAFAEL PANTOJA, the alleged murderer of Sacramento Roca, has been sentenced to four years in prison for coercion and harassment. The incident occurred in November of last year, when Pantoja began harassing the victim at work. Roca subsequently filed a complaint at the police station, after finding that the wheels of her car has been punctured, attributing the damage to Pantoja. During the trial, which took place on Tuesday, the prosecution and defence
reached an agreement whereby Pantoja accepted a two-year jail sentence for the crime of serious coercion and an additional two years for harassment. The murder trial is still pending, but relates to the alleged murder of Roca on November 16, 2018. It is reported that the defendant repeatedly stabbed his ex-partner with a machete at her workplace in Palma, inflicting 11 stab wounds to her body. After being arrested, Pantoja attempted to injure himself in his police cell, and was treated at Son Espases hospital.

AID: Mallorca Sense Fam supports 26 families.
Help where needed THIS year, the Mallorca Sense Fam launched a support service, distributing essential items to households that live on less than €500 per month. Each Wednesday, a van distributes food, hygiene and cleaning products to families in Son Espanyolet and El Terreno, in an effort to help those that need it the most. The majority of these are elderly residents with reduced mobility and limited access to local services. In an effort to raise money for the initia-
tive, last Sunday (October 20), the ‘Escolad Hoteleria de les llles Balears’ and the General Command of the Balearic Islands hosted their their fourth Gastro Solidarity Day in Inca. Uniting gastronomy with teamwork, teachers and students from the school prepared a local dish, with proceeds donated to Mallorca Sense Fam. Since its establishment in April, the programme which aims to distribute more than 300 tonnes of food annually, supports 26 families in Mallorca with the aid of 30 volunteers.

Film frenzy Festival THE Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival is underway, taking place until October 29 in Palma. Last night, the Academy Award-winning filmmaker, Asif Kapadia, picked up the notable Evolution Vision Award at the Opening Gala, an accolade given to an artist who consistently inspires audiences and breaks boundaries.
Save the Med VOLUN TEERS gathered on Cala Mesquida beach on Saturday morning to tackle plastic pollution in Mallorca. Organised by Save the Med Foundation, a team of local residents and ecologists participated in a beach clean-up, removing waste found along the coast.

No entry BOAT owners in Andratx are planning to stage a demonstration tomorrow (Friday, October 25) by parking lorries, trailers and machinery in front of the town hall. This is a protest against the closure of dry docks, where those affected insist on being allowed to use the docks for maintenance and storage until the legislature is approved.
Family fun ‘SA FIRA’ is taking place on Sunday (October 27), a traditional fair celebrating art, culture and gastronomy in Santanyí. The family-friendly event will include artisan produce, children’s activities, workshops and live music.

WORK has begun to restructure the car park at Manacor Hospital in the first stage of its planned improvements. The work is expected to be completed by the end of next week (October 31), in an effort to solve the deterioration of the existing parking lot. Through a new configuration, the car park will benefit from 40 per cent more space. During the restructure, officials at the hospital have advised those that wish to park, to do so on the town’s main streets, purchasing a ticket from a parking meter rather than online. The management of Manacor Hospital have stated that this is a provisional solution, where a new underground parking space has been included in the second phase of the extension work. This is a project that has been planned to commence at the end of next year.
FROM Saturday to Monday, (October 26 to 28), Alcúdia will host the Long Course Weekend, a unique sporting event made up of the three triathlon disciplines - swimming, cycling and running. Now in its third edition, the Long Course Weekend is expected to attract more than 1,000 participants in an inclusive format that is ideal for clubs, training groups and families. Participants can choose individual events from the three disciplines of varying distances, or take part in the Long Course option, where athletes are required to compete in the longest distance of each test. The collective times for each athlete over the three days will determine who will win the Long Course Weekend, as well as who will take second and third place. String of break-ins THE National Police have arrested a man on suspicion of committing a string of breakins at shops in Palma. Following multiple complaints from store owners in the capital, officers from the Robbery Group initiated an investigation. The thefts were committed between September and October of this year with the same method and always at dawn. Residents complained about lack of security in the neighbourhood, asking for more police to be deployed on the streets. British triathlete dies TRAGIC news dominated the Challenge Peguera-Mallorca triathlon, with the death of a 45-year-old British man. The incident occurred about 600 metres from the shore of La Torà beach around 10am on Saturday October 19. Lifeguards brought the man back to the beach, treating him until medics from the 061 emergency ambulance service arrived. Paramedics fought for over an hour to revive the man, who had reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest during the swimming leg of the half triathlon. The competition’s organisers released a statement, extending their condolences “to all the family and people close to the athlete, whom we will continue to support.” Their message continued by saying that they were working closely with security

Drug bust AT least six people have been detained after police raided nine homes of a known gang in Palma. More than 50 heavily armed officers were involved in the operation and police say that they confiscated significant amounts of marihuana, cocaine and heroin.

It has been reported the woman, of Spanish nationality, arrived home but realised that she had forgotten her keys and in order not to wake up her friends, decided to take an alternative route. THE Homicide Group of the National Police are investigating the disturbing disappeara n c e o f S a i d H o u rmati, a young Moroccan man who has been missing since June 15 this year. On the day of his disappearance, Said, a bricklayer for a construction company, left home at 7am, picked up by his boss to take him to work. On the way back, he was dropped at Pere Garau, but since he had no keys, he went to a bar. The following Monday, his sister became worried, filing a report with the National Police in belief that Said did not leave voluntarily. His phone was disconnected and he had not shown up for work, taking nothing from their home. Specialised police officers are investigating several lines of enquiries, including his relationship with the owners of the farm where he worked.

NEW laws for ‘all inclusive’ deals in hotels and restaurants will be in place by the end of this year. Speaking to Parliament last Friday, Iago Negueruela, Minister of Tourism for the Balearic Islands, stated that “zoning and specific limitations will be implemented in places where mass consumption of alcohol is encouraged.” These limitations will affect restaurants, entertainment venues and shops, as well as hotels in specific areas. said that those affected by the new law are being consulted in a bid to produce a text that all parties can agree to. BRITONS are set to get a taste, feel and touch of Mallorca, thanks to an exciting promotional campaign in London next month. Catalina Cladera, President of the Council of Mallorca and Andres Serra, councillor for Tourism and Sport, have revealed an ambitious campaign for the World Travel Market in London in November, made up of two initiatives. The first is purchasing the entire advertising space on a double decker bus which runs through one of London’s most central routes. The bus will be running for four weeks, two weeks prior to the fair and two weeks after. Covered in images of key locations in Mallorca such as Palma Cathedral and the Tramuntana Mountains, the bus will also feature the hashtag ‘Mallorca Inspires.’ The second initiative and the main event for the Council is the ‘Fall for Mallorca’ experience which is being held on November 4 at Hispania, one of London’s

Due to the demise of Thomas Cook in the UK and a rise in the popularity of competing destinations, the Council of Mallorca adopted ‘shock action’ to stimulate the British market. Soller train: Would be first major railway in Spain to join a European network of historic railways. THE emblematic Sóller train hopes to enter a European network of historic railways, being the first major railway in Spain to join. The wooden train that connects Palma to the town of Sóller, has submitted a formal request to become part of the European Federation of Museum & Tourist Railways (FEDECRAIL), an association which protects the interests of heritage railways. At present, the organisation works with more than 650 historic and tourist trains in more than 27 countries. T h e Vi c e - P r e s i d e n t s o f FEDECRAIL, Jacques D a c i ff and Heimo Echensperger, visited the
facilities of the train line, accompanied by Josep Boya from the Railway Museum in Mora la Nova, Tarragona. During the visit,Óscar Mayol, President of Sóller Railway since 2007, formally submitted the request, confirming his commitment to preserving the railway, which carries approximately 1 million passengers a year. Since its operation since 1912, the train with wooden carriages, has been in continuous use, climbing 200 metres and passing through 13 tunnels on a journey of 27km. Money for the building of the line was raised among the town’s residents, in an ambitious project that sought
to transport citrus fruit from the Sóller valley to the capital.Each of itsoriginal carriages, as well as all o f i t s m a c h i n e r y, h a v e a long history, where the renovation of the train’scomponentshas to be created or modified by hand. D a c i ff c o m m e n t e d t h a t “the Sóller Train would be the first major railway in Spain to join”, adding that “it meets all the conditions to be accepted in the association since all of its material is old and the conditions for travellers are perfect”. Putting on the brakes AFTER an increasing amount of complaints from local residents, Palma police have launched a campaign to clamp down on electric scooter riders who break the law. Officers are being deployed to the streets in the capital over
the next two weeks, where anyone caught speeding, using mobiles or driving negligently could be issued with a fine of up to €200. Less serious violations will likely result in a warning, where riders will be informed of the regulations for
driving a scooter safely. More serious offences, which includes speeding or using a mobile whilst driving, will carry a more substantial penalty. The new regulations for electric scooters were introduced in June of this year and by August 13, 52 people had been fined for breaking the law. This included infractions such as riding an electric scooter on a main road or on pavements, both which carry a penalty of €40. At present, it is not compulsory to wear a helmet when riding an electric scooter in the capital, however new regulations are expected to be enforced. Children under the age of 15 are only allowed to ride electric scooters in bike lanes and on residential roads with a speed limit of 30 kilometres an hour. The rules are being strictly imposed by officers due to a general unawareness from scooter riders, who have no idea about road safety. This is putting pedestrians at risk, which is the top priority for the police.

Attempted murder
ACCUSED: Felt psychologically harassed by his mother and her partner. A MURDER trial is underway in Palma Court, to decide on the fate of a man who allegedly attempted to murder his mother and killed his stepfather last year. The incident occurred on the night of January 11, 2018 in Costa d’en Blanes, when the defendant, aged 27 years old at the time, allegedly attacked his 46-yearold mother with a bayonet, subsequently murdering her partner when he tried to defend her. He reportedly threw the bayonet into a neighbour ’s garden when he left the house, however when he returned home and found them both alive, he allegedly attacked them again with a large kitchen knife. The accused inflicted 18 stabs to his mother and 21 stabs to her partner, using
such force that he broke the blade. After the attack, he called the emergency services to report two bodies in the house. His mother was rushed to hospital with multiple serious injuries, but her partner died at the scene of severe blood loss and cardiac arrest. According to the defendant’s testimony, he felt psychologically harassed by his mother and her partner. Prosecutors are asking that the defendant is jailed for at least 36 years and to be banned from communicating or being within 300 metres of his mother or her partner ’s family for a period of secen years. They also request that he pays €125,000 to each of the victim’s children and €145,000 in damages to his mother. The trial continues.

Once again, he trod on Tory toes by simply refusing leave for the government to hold a meaningful vote on the Prime Minister’s Brexit deal saying that it would be “repetitive and disorderly” to allow such a vote last Monday. His decision was based on his belief that the circumstances and the substance of the motion were the same as Saturday’s and that it should not be debated so quickly

WHILST opponents of Brexit accused Boris Johnson of throwing a childish tantrum, Scotland’s highest court delayed a decision on Monday as to whether the prime minister had fully complied with a law requiring him to ask for a Brexit extension. The situation last Saturday was that he sent an unsigned letter to Brussels requesting an extension (which may or not be agreed to) plus a signed letter effectively requesting that the EU declines to extend. Representatives of the British government stated at the Court of Session that this fulfilled its legal obligations under the Benn Act but the leading judge, Lord Carloway said the case should be continued until it was clear that all of the obligations under the legislation had been ‘complied with in full.’ In theory, if the court rules against the prime minister, he could be sentenced to prison.

The plight of Victoria de Castro, who returned to find
intruders living inside the home that she had lived in all her life, triggered a response by neighbours who congregated in front of the house. Faced with an increasingly angry crowd, the squatters ended up calling the police to say that they would leave the property if they were guaranteed protection, eventually walking out amid heavy security presence.
Under Spanish law, regaining the possession back of a home involves lengthy procedures that could until recently take up to two years. In 2018, new legislation was passed to reduce that to 30 days through civil proceedings, however complicated paperwork pushes many homeowners to simply pay the squatters to leave.

Fatal reunion A 35-YEAR-OLD German woman h a s d i e d a n d a 3 0 - y e a r- o l d British man remains in critical condition after being knocked down by a car whilst walking along the Paseo MarĂtimo in Palma. The couple was struck by a vehicle last Thursday (October 18), when a woman allegedly lost control of her car and mounted the pavement. The driver crashed into the front of the Palma Auditorium, colliding with the two tourists who were in her path. The German woman tragically died at the scene despite the best efforts of paramedics. The British man was rushed to Son Espases Hospital, where he is reported
to be in critical condition, having suffered multiple injuries after being trapped under the vehicle. The Briton was part of a group of former Manchester University students who arrived to Mallorca for a reunion party. The group was staying at a hotel along the seafront and the couple was on their way to collect a hire care when the accident occurred. The female driver passed a breath test at the scene and was arrested by Local Police, accused of reckless homicide and reckless driving, according to sources. The tragic incident was witnessed by several locals and tourists, causing distress in the capital.

Popular cafe closes THE Zanzibar Cafe in Santa Catalina has closed its doors after more than a decade in business, after new legislation took a heavy toll on the restaurant
and cafĂŠ, according to the owners. A new law for terraces in restaurants and bars was introduced in May to ensure that pedestrians would have enough room to walk, especially to those with reduced mobility or using a pushchair. A minimum width of passage between the chairs of a terrace and the pavement was established, forcing Joan Pujol and his father Esteban to remove six tables from outside and another 17 inside. As a result, the takings of
the business reportedly slumped by a whopping 38 per cent. The owners of Zanzibar Cafe were planning to modernise the restaurant and had applied for permission to renovate the restaurant terrace. However, after the new regulations were approved, the owners decided to close down, putting seven people out of work. Since Zanzibar opened, it has been estimated that more than a million customers have visited the premises.

Donating blood in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. In Spain, Blood Components and Services are provided by 17 Regional Blood Transfusion Services. Despite their autonomous operations management, every regional service is fully incorporated into a unique and common Public National Health System, supplying a cohesive blood transfusion care to all citizens, residents, and visitors in Spain based on 100 per cent voluntary and non-remunerated blood donation. For more general information, visit www.msps.es. Anyone who has lived continuously in the UK between 1980 and 1996 (a minimum of one year) will not be able to donate blood in Spain due to the risk of transmitting mad cow disease. Similarly, there are restrictions if you have received a blood transfer in the UK. However, each region may have different rules about donation. Call the donation helpline on 935 573 500. Alternatively, visit www.donorsang.gencat.cat to find out if you are eligible. If you are eligible, you can give blood at your local hospital, or via the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja) at one of their clinics, or in one of their mobile units. You can check dates and locations by visiting www.donarsangre.org. A donor card is not necessary to give blood. On the first visit you will have to provide DNI, NIE, passport or a driving licence. If you are already registered in the Blood Bank, you only need a donor card or a document with your name and surname. The process of blood donation takes just 10 minutes in which 450 ml are collected (equating to 10 per cent of the total blood circulation of an adult person). Despite huge technological advances, the only way for hospitals to obtain blood is through the generosity of the public. The blood is carefully screened for disease to make sure it is safe. After a tattoo, you must wait four months to be eligible to donate. After surgery, the exclusion period will depend on the type of intervention. After minor surgical procedures, you cannot donate blood for seven days or until you are fully recovered. After undergoing major surgery, you will not be able to donate blood for four months. The rarest blood type is AB, present in 1 per cent of Caucasians, according to research by the America Red Cross. Blood transfusions are carried out daily in Spanish hospitals with more than 6,200 patients being given them, of whom almost a quarter are fighting cancer and a similar figure receiving transfusions during or after surgery. Spain has around two million donors in total, but needs closer to four million. This information is for guidance only, and should not be taken as legal advice. DEPARTURE LOUNGE: It is practically unavoidable to not purchase a beverage.
€1 water bottles VENDING machines have now been installed in Palma de Mallorca airport, where passengers can purchase water bottles for €1. Earlier this year, Aena, the airport’s operator, announced its plans to force all operators of vending machines and convenience stores in Spanish airports to impose maximum prices on half-litre water bottles. The move was a response to an increasing number of passenger complaints about the ‘exorbitant’ price of water.
Since stricter anti-terrorism measures were introduced at airports across the world, it has not been possible for passengers to take liquids past security checks into the departure lounge, meaning that is is practically unavoidable to not purchase a beverage for the time that elapses between boarding and landing at a destination. The airports of Sevilla, Jerez, Girona-Costa Brava, Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas, MalagaCosta del Sol and Menorca, among others have also fixed the price of the sale of water, a condition set in contract renewals.
SOME €1.2 million of tourist tax money will be used to build charging stations for electric buses in Mallorca next year. The new fleet of buses will contain 197 natural gas buses, nine fully electric, nine electric hybrids and two CNG hybrids. The electric buses will run on three lines, Bahía de Alcúdia, Cala Millor/Cala Bona and Santa Ponsa/Magaluf, who each will have their own charging station installed at the starting point of each line. The electric buses are designed to meet certain criteria and are being used on routes that are most suited to their capabilities. Under the Cleaner Transport Facility, which aims to promote cleaner transport systems, the European Investment Bank (EIB) has sanctioned almost €200 million of funding assistance for the largest cities in Spain, including Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Barcelona and Valencia. EIB’s funding support will replace approximately 180 diesel buses with new alternatives in Mallorca, cutting the polluting emissions produced by buses.

Get the power New Luxury Malaga Port Hotel THE town hall’s Equality department announced a free course on Female Empowerment. This will be held on Thursdays and Saturdays between 10am and 12 noon in the H o g a r d e l P e n s i o n i s t a ’s m u l t i p u r p o s e room. Entitled Secretos de una mujer feliz (Secrets of a happy woman) the course continues until next May and is open to women of all ages and nationalities, promoting empowerment individually, collectively and socially. “The course will show them how to handle emotions, listen to them and recognise them,” explained Equality councillor Rocio Guijarro. “It also promotes self-esteem, motivation, and capacity for decision-making.” The empowerment course will provide spaces for reflection and self-awareness that can show women how to identify what they need and what they lack, while improving their self-esteem by appreciating their qualities and resources, Guijarro said. The organisers also hope that the course c a n s t i m u l a t e c r e a t i v i t y, p o s i t i v i t y a n d g o o d h u m o u r, h e l p i n g p a r t i c i p a n t s t o recognise their personal worth, generating networks and encouraging unity.

Takes Another Step Forward
MALAGA CITY: A new luxury hotel is proposed for the dock area. THE proposed new luxury hotel and conference centre planned for the Levante dock in Malaga has taken another step forward last week after a meeting was held at the Malaga Town Hall between the mayor and key financiers. Representatives of the Qatari Royal family, who are financing the project, met with Malaga mayor Francisco de la Torre to discuss plans for the upcoming venture. The Qatari royals were represented by former Real Madrid president Ramón Calderón who was acting as spokesperson of both the family and their affiliated holding company, Al Alfia. The proposed hotel is planned for a site at the end of the Levante dock in Malaga’s high end port area. It will include a 135-metre-tall 35-storey tower, luxury hotel rooms and a world class business centre. It is estimated to cost around €150 million, completely funded by the Qatari family. Although construction work was due to begin in 2020, this now seems unlikely as a mountain of bureaucratic paperwork needs to be completed before the work can start.

Phoenician site clean up THE deputy mayor of Torre del Mar, Jesus Perez Atencia, and councillor for the Environment, Antonio Ariza have announced a clear up programme to uncover the historically valuable Phoenician sites of Tuscany. The sites have been buried under mountains of undergrowth and domestic waste and despite weekly tours given by historical societies; it has remained untouched until now. Atencia, and Ariza announced the plan on Monday morning and have confirmed the council’s commitment to the historical value of the site. “We have, once and for all been able to act in these important sites, which were completely buried in undergrowth,” explained Atencia. “The council has mobilised a team of parks and gardens to adapt this site with an important remit of cleaning and clearing,” continued Ariza “We wanted to start by discovering reeds and weeds throughout the site to continue with a later intervention around the perimeter of the site.” The local council has placed extremely high value on the site historically and they understand the importance that the site offers to the economy and tourism industry in Velez-Malaga and Torre del Mar.

Tap into clean water
Hospital kitchens’ Michelin makeover HOSPITAL food doesn’t always get the best reports. But patients at the Hospital Universitario Los Arcos del Mar Menor would have had nothing to complain about when they had food prepared by a Michelin starred chef. Pablo Gonzalez celebrated Hospitality Day organised by food wholesalers Makro - by creating a tapa that was cooked and served at the hospital. In total, more than 540 tapas were offered to patients in five hospitals throughout Spain. The others were the Universitario General de Elche, Vinalopó (C Valenciana) and Universitario Severo Ochoa and Infanta Leonor (both in Madrid). All the tapas had one thing in common - they were created especially for the occasion by local Michelin starred chefs. Pablo González Conejero prepared a strawberry and wild fruit gazpacho, while in Elche Susi Díaz prepared a citrus eclair, a dessert filled with citrus cream, covered with white chocolate and silver powder. Severo Ochoa and Infanta Leonor patients were able to try a ‘plankton’ salad and a croquette of mint stew accompanied by chickpea purée, made by Rodrigo de la Calle and Iván Muñoz, respectively.

Thanks for job well done HUERCAL-OVERA has thanked the municipality’s Local Police and Guardia Civil and Levante firefighters for their good work. Following a mass to mark the celebration of the day of the police’s patron saints, Mayor Francisca Lourdes Fernandez and Local Police chief Cristobal Artero presented several awards. Guardia Civil lieutenant Jose Manuel Bermudez was recognised for his coordination of the municipal security forces. The council recognised the Levante firefighting service for its protection of local residents and for its collaboration with the Local Police team. There was also an award for Jose Benitez for what the local authority stressed was the “bravery” he showed in helping police, Guardia Civil and firefighters rescue a person trapped by flooding in their vehicle on the A-350 during the torrential rains in the early hours of September 13. “Without thinking twice about the risk he was running, and driven only by saving the life of a person who was trapped, he made up part of the rescue team,” the council said. The mayor took the opportunity to highlight “the well-deserved homage and fair recognition” of the Local Police force “for being the true promoters of democratic values based on respect for the law and regulations on coexistence.”
EMAYA has launched a project to improve the quality and taste of tap water and promote its consumption in Mallorca. As part of Palma City Council’s project to promote the consumption of tap water, Emaya’s board of directors awarded Aquambiente and Suez Treatment Solutions the project for the ultrafiltration of water from the natural sources that supply Palma. The work will take around 20 months to complete and aims to improve the taste of water and to double the capacity of treating water from source, which will go from 500 to 1,000 litres per second, and generate more water from renewable and sustainable resources. The current system does not make it possible to take advantage of a significant part of the water that flows from the sources during the rainy season, due to a lack of capacity and because it cannot treat water that has a high degree of turbidity or cloudiness. The town hall hopes to increase consumption of tap water by the public and reduce the consumption of plastic bottles. The president of Emaya, Ramon Perpinyà, reminded everyone that Palma’s water is drinkable, has all the health guarantees for human consumption, and is controlled and analysed continuously. The project will include the construction of a 600 square metre building in Son Tugores with new pipes, pump systems and the renovation of the electrical installation and the control system.

WITH the latest outbreak of demon strations in Cataluña following the prison sentences handed down to those involved in the illegal Indepen dence referendum, local business owners are worried about the future. The Cataluñia Business Association has appealed to the government to restore security in the region as they contend that demonstrations of this type can lead to serious violence and hurt all types of business. Tourists are unlikely to visit what is one of Spain’s most popular destina tions if there is continued unrest. Their spokesman said 7,000 com panies have left Cataluña since 2012 (of which 5,400 left in 2017) and it is feared more businesses will relocate.

You surmised that the court case was lost be cause the community’s permission had not been obtained. You then state: ‘Properly, your town hall should not have issued a building permit without first seeing this permis sion.’ Our Community has frequent problems with owners making structural alterations without seeking approval at the AGM. At a meeting with a lawyer for our local town hall, we were told that ensuring someone has AGM ap proval is not the responsibility of the town hall. The lawyer stated that as long as the building regulations were not breached the town hall has to issue the licence. Could you tell me what the legal reference is for your statement? Your town hall lawyer is quite right. The YOU AND THE town building de LAW IN SPAIN partment has no le gal obligation to re quire the community’s permission in order to issue the building permit. However, some of the more conscientious town halls will question its absence, which is what led me to use the term ‘properly.’ Wishful thinking on my part, and sorry to have misled you.

Secret CCTV THE European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has reversed on ap peal from Spain a judgement it made concerning a complaint from five cashiers at a Spanish supermar ket that they were illegally filmed. The court finally agreed with the Spanish courts that the decision to place hidden cameras in their place of work without telling was both ‘proportionate and legitimate’ as there had been clear evidence of discrepancies between stock counts and daily takings. Staff had been made aware there were video cameras as a method of trying to identify possible theft, but did not that they were suspected of being involved.

Airlines to reduce cabin fumes By John Smith SOME two months ago flight BA422 from Heathrow to Valencia suddenly filled with what was de scribed as choking smoke and a BBC report has highlighted the fact that some of the passengers con tinue to suffer with breathing diffi culties. As the matter is still being investi gated by Spanish air accident au thorities, BA have declined to com ment due to legal reasons, but this is just one of a whole string of simi lar incidents that go back for more than a decade.

FEW consumers will realise that with effect from the end of September new security and authentication requirements (PSD2 directive) were supposed to be in place throughout the European Union to cover online transactions. In actual fact, there has been a time-slip and the Bank of Spain has indicated that all banks, online businesses and payment service providers in Spain have until the end of this year to submit their proce-
dures which would require positive responses to two out of three questions to allow payment to go through. The concept is that there must be an answer to a question, details of a password and voice or fingerprint recognition and once all of that is in place, then the actual start date will not be until January 1, 2021! The idea behind this is to increase consumer safety and harmonise the rules across the EU.
In actual fact it is unlikely that the problem was caused by smoke, but was yet another fume event which some experts say is responsible for symptoms known as Aerotoxic Syn drome which may also affect pilots and cabin crew on a long term basis. Ironically when smoking was banned on aircraft, most airlines decided that rather than suck fresh air into the cabins through the en gine intakes, they would make oth er arrangements in order to reduce fuel costs. Instead, they decided to recycle air via the engines and it is claimed that the valves controlling this can often allow pollutants to escape, causing these fume events within an aircraft. It is in theory possible to add spe cial filters to the system, but some observers suggest that this is not being done because it could give public recognition to the concept of Aerotoxic Syndrome and thus leave airlines open to being sued for com pensation. As the number of fume event re ports grow, so will the need to in vestigate the true reason for their cause.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT AT the risk of upsetting my gay friends and relatives, whom I truly do love dearly, I am going to stride purposefully out on a limb and state quite categorically that I am utter ly against transgender males competing in female sporting competitions. This statement has nothing to do with ho mophobia (heaven forbid) it is reached by the simple conclusion that it’s obviously not fair. Merely because a muscle bound weightlifter decides he wants to change his name to Doris and live as a woman, his choice should in no way give him / her / it / us / them / we, the right to compete against the fair sex in trials of strength. If this practice were allowed to prevail in all sporting competitions, most of them would never see a genetic female grace the winner’s dais again. So, as much as I truly do sympathise with the situations that the transgender cyclist Rachel McKinnon finds herself in, the idea that she has being ‘vic timised’ and ‘it’s not fair’ that she be exclud ed from female competitions, is in fact quite the reverse. Despite what she would have us think, men and women on this planet are dif ferent, particularly in the physical sense. Does she truly believe that it would be

‘fair’ to pit male boxers and wrestlers, against females? Would she be prepared to take the responsibility of fatalities or serious injuries in the ring simply because she con siders all opposition to her opinions are ho mophobic, or simply ‘not fair’? No, this is the usual rhetoric from another minority, not at
all happy with their lot, who are utterly inse cure in their ‘differences’ and consider the only way they can be accepted is to brow beat the majority into recognising their situa tion as ‘the norm.’ Well, it’s not the ‘norm.’ What this person should really be doing is accepting and taking pride in the knowledge
that there are many human beings who are in fact different, and to celebrate this phe nomena by working toward and perhaps in troducing a separate category for transgen der sportsmen and women, in much the same way as the wonderful work and effort that has resulted in the worldwide success of those that find themselves physically im paired. I didn’t hear those marvelous people whingeing and whining about their infirmi ties. Their paraOlympics and competitions are magnificent and a sparkling example of what can be overcome by the human spirit. So I suggest that all those transgender sports people who figure themselves hard done by and put upon, to stop blaming the majority and come up with some positive way of improving their lot. What a great event something like that could actually be. ‘The Transgender Games.’ Book me in on the front row and stop being such pathetic de generating drags! Many congrats here to Grete and Steiner on their 50 years together and many thanks to the good people of the Pineapple Albir for a great welcome at the gig for the celebrations. Keep the faith. Baby Bugatti enters Production NICK HORNE’S Rich Pick Freelance correspondent, London, England THE Geneva Motor Show has seen the launch of many new cars to the world. Bugatti celebrating its 110th birthday this year decided to mark the anniversary with several special editions including the Baby Bugatti II. Announced as a limited edition of just 500 cars the Baby Bugatti II’s sold out in just weeks. At the Geneva Motor Show the Baby was a 3D printed model. After many months of further de velopment this year the first working prototype the Baby Bugatti II XP1 was presented to a spe cial gathering of Bugatti customers held at the marque’s home at Molsheim in September. The original Baby Bugatti was a gift by Ettore Bugatti to his son Roland for his fourth birthday in 1926. The toy car was a half scale of the Type 35 built for the 1924 French Grand Prix at Lyon. The response from customers to this charming present was so strong that some 500 Baby Bugattis were manufactured between 1927 and 1936. The Baby Bugatti II unlike the original is de signed to be driven not only by children but also by adults, with the scale pushed up to three
quarters rather than half scale. The inclusion of a sliding pedal box accommodating adults when they manage to wrest the car away from the child. Also redesigned for the modern era is the drive train, now electric and powered with lithi um ion batteries and regenerative braking the BB II comes in three specifications. With a com posite body, with a carbon fibre body and a ‘speed key,’ and the BBII Pur Sang with a hand crafted aluminium body and ‘speed key.’ Speeds of up to 45 km/h indicate the driving experience that young and old will enjoy. A re mote control key to disable the car at up to 50 metres range, just in case a driver gets carried away. In short the BBII is expected to be fully en joyed by collectors as well as their grandchildren.
The innovative in its day eightspoke alloy wheels are replicated though now clad with modern Michelin tyres. The lightweight hol low front axle has been re produced as has the sus pension and the signature steering mechanism from the original. The cockpit is dominated by the fourspoke wood steering wheel in front of the turned alu minium dashboard on which are mounted cus tom Bugatti instruments. The original cars had a tachograph with oil and fuel pressure gages, these have been re placed with a speedometer, battery level indica

The clock used for measuring race performance in the Type 35 remains. The fuel pressure pump has been re purposed as a forward / reverse control. All BB II’s be equipped with a rear view mirror, hand brake, headlights and the essential horn. The exterior of the Bugatti Baby II is faithful to the original Bugatti Type 35 and will be painted as standard in French Racing Blue with a black leather interior. Naturally other colour options are available for both the exterior and interior. Actual manufacture and production is due to start in early 2020 and the option to join a Re serve List is still possible, just in case a prospec tive buyer should change their mind. THIS may be something that gets you angry. Speaking to many Brits who drive through France and parts of Spain, there seems to be a dramatic i n c r e a s e o f d r i v e r s r e c e i v i n g m e s sages from home saying that they have a speeding notification from ei ther the French or Spanish police. I personally have had four, and one of them was for exceeding the limit by 1kph. Looks like a ‘get the British before Brexit’ scheme to me. Would greatly appreciate your take on this. Cheers. Which way? I READ a while ago that Torrevieja Town Hall announced that there was now a relief road to reduce conges tion on the CV95 and, true enough, there is... except that there is nothing to advise the motorists of same. The signs at the roundabout on the CV95 still say only ‘Urbanizacion’ whilst at the Via Park 3 end, there is nothing to indicate where the road goes to. The sign for Orihuela is still indi cating the road by the Via Park 3 centre. To make matters worse, if any one does find and take the road from the Aldi end they will soon see a ‘No Through Road’ sign con fronting them! No chance of the congestion be ing relieved whilst these signs re main as they are. Barry Weston
Politically correct LEAPY LEE Just read your article in Euro Weekly and it reminded me of a true story that happened in west Wales about 20 years ago. A local shopkeeper used to put up a joke of the day in his shop window.
The one day he displayed Q/ ‘What do you call three days of rain and then a day of sunshine?’ A/ ‘A bank holiday in Wales.’ Most people thought it was just a crap joke.

A guy made a formal complaint about the shopkeeper stating it was racist as it was antiWelsh. Everybody thought the complainant should get a life until the guy was interviewed and it transpired that the shopkeeper was Indian and that if the complainant had made a similar type of joke about the shopkeeper’s home town he would have been had up for racism. All he was saying is that it should be a twoway street. I have also argued that being born in 1960 exposed you to a totally different education and upbringing just look at the TV shows and remember the name of Richard Todd’s (Guy Gibson) dog in the film Dambusters. Robertson’s jam with Gollywogs etc. We are now re ferred to as racist. I am not at all racist but I still find black jokes amusing. CLOCKS will be going back all over the EU in the early hours of Saturday October 26. This will mean a whole 60 minutes more in bed. Three in the morning will go back to two, giving people the perfect start to a restful Sunday. This practice is known as DST - daylight saving time and will essentially transfer an hour of evening daylight to the morning. The contrary happens between spring and autumn, when there is an extra hour of daylight in the evening. DST has been the subject of much debate this year and in March the European Parliament announced its support to abolish the system in 2021. However, the majority of countries haven’t been able to come to a decision internally. Many investigations have tried predicting the preferable schedule. The Spanish Society of Sleep backs the winter timetable, explaining that it allows a better relation between sunlight and the population’s activity. They argue that light in the morning is more beneficial. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents in the UK disagrees and complains that the clock moving back means that traffic rush hours in the afternoon are in darkness. More accidents happen in the afternoon peak than in the morning peak and the time change may increase the numbers. With 80 per cent of Europeans against DST, it is probable that the practice will be revisited in future discussions in an attempt to decipher the best routine for people’s lifestyle and well-being.

Landmark breast cancer survey THOUSANDS of women are experiencing ‘avoidable’ delays
in being diagnosed w i t h t h e re t u r n a n d spread of breast can-

In the largest ever UK sur vey of people living with in curable secondary breast cancer, nearly one in four (24 per cent) respondents who had previously been treated for breast cancer had to visit their GP three or more times with symptoms before being diagnosed with the return and spread of the disease. In addition, four in 10 (41 per cent) respondents who had spoken to a healthcare professional before being di agnosed with secondary breast cancer said they felt that their symptoms had not been taken seriously. If left untreated, sec ondary breast cancer contin ues to spread and symptoms are likely to worsen and have a greater impact on daily life.
While there is insufficient ev idence to show whether de lays in diagnosis may signifi cantly shorten patients’ lives, early diagnosis and timely access to treatment and sup port can help alleviate symp toms and have a dramatic impact on quality of life. Breast Cancer Now is call ing for better support for GPs such as online training and for alerts of the redflag symptoms of secondary breast cancer to be included and used in all GPs’ IT soft ware as well as for all pri mary breast cancer patients to be given full information on the signs of secondary breast cancer as part of fol lowup support after treat ment to help ensure every one receives a prompt diagnosis. The findings come as the charity launches ‘The Unsur vivors,’ a bold new campaign
calling for greater recogni tion of the estimated 35,000 UK people living with incur able secondary breast cancer and for a stepchange in their diagnosis, treatment and care. The charity said the cam paign aimed to challenge the “worrying perception that everyone survives breast cancer” which fails to recog nise “the heartbreaking reali ty for 11,500 families in the UK each year.” Breast cancer is the UK’s most common cancer, with around 55,000 women and 370 men being diagnosed each year. While more women than ever are surviv ing the disease thanks to decades of progress, NHS in vestment, and increased charity support funded by the public, around 11,500 still die in the UK each year. Almost all of these deaths
are attributable to sec ondary breast cancer, where breast cancer spreads to an other part of the body, such as the bones, liver, lungs, skin or brain. While sec ondary (also known as ‘metastatic’) breast cancer can be treated and con trolled for some time to help patients live well for as long as possible, it remains incur able and patients stay in treatment for the rest of their lives. In around five per cent of the 55,000 new cases of breast cancer each year, the disease has already spread by the time it is diag nosed5 ― and for thousands more it can return around the body years later. Early diagnosis can be criti cal in ensuring patients can begin treatment, and receive the care and support they need, as soon as possible.

Game of two halves REF Wayne Barnes blew his whistle and South Africa kicked off. First blood went to South Africa as Tamura fell off a tackle allowing Mapimpi to go over the line on four minutes. Hurri Kane THERE is one Premier League manager feeling a little more relaxed as Mauricio Pochettino watched his Tottenham Hotspur team beat Red Star Belgrade at home 5 0. Spurs have had what can only be described as a terrible start to their season and whilst not relegation candi dates, certainly have disappointed their le gion of fans with their performances in both the Premier and UEFA Champions League. With three losses and three draws they lie in seventh place in the Premier League and second in the Champi ons League, six points behind leaders Bayern Munich. On Tuesday night it was stalwarts Harry Kane and Som Hueng Min who won the match with two goals apiece with Erik Lamela scoring one and supply ing two scoring passes. Most clubs undergo a down turn during the season and perhaps Spurs have experienced theirs early. Pep Guardiola saw his Manchester City side cruise to a 51 win over Italian side Atalan ta, also at home, with a brace for Sergio Aguiro and a clinical 11minute second half hat trick from Raheem Sterling. The light blues lead their Champions League table with nine points from three matches but were shown to be de fensively vulnerable al though to lose one goal but score five isn’t cur rently a problem.
