IN the wake of the violent protests on the streets of Barcelona, residents of Mallorca took to the streets on Monday to show their solidarity and to protest the imprisonment of Catalan leaders for between nine and 13 years.

Over 1,000 people stood in the rain in Plaza del Cort outside the town hall of Palma holding banners demanding ‘freedom of political prisoners’ and chanting.

Although peaceful and not violent in any way, the protest attracted hordes of people and the police presence was noticeable in the area to maintain order and keep the peace.

Banners were held aloft with slogans such as ‘There w o n ’t b e a c a g e f o r s o many birds,’ ‘Enough repression’ and the ‘Streets will always be ours’ amongst others.

The protest went on for several hours with the rain doing nothing to deter the protesters’ indignation at the sentences passed for the Catalan leaders with yellow ribbons and a sea of yellow umbrellas as far as the eye

could see.

Senator Vicenç Vidal of the group MÉS per Mallorca, the coordinator of the training Guillem Balboa, and the secretary of the Parl i a m e n t a r y Ta b l e , J o a n a Aina Campomar were among the protesters.

The protest was staged against a Supreme Court ruling that sentenced nine separatist leaders to prison terms for the illegal secession attempt of 2017.

Star struck closure

FORMENTOR was closed to traffic on Monday for the filming of The Last Letter From Your Lover, a film by filmmaker and actress, Augustine Frizzel.

The film stars Shaliene Woodley, well-known for her roles in the Divergent series and Big Little Lies, and Oscar nominee Felicity Jones, well-known for her role in The Theory of Everything.

Woodley could be seen on Monday behind the wheel of a 1960’s Mercedes in a headscarf filming some scenes on the famous winding road in Formentor.

The actress was joined by actor Joe Alwyn, currently dating superstar singer, Taylor Swift.

Filming concluded on Monday before moving to Pollensa and then eventually back to the UK. The film is based on the bestselling novel by Jojo Moyes, author of Me Before You. In the film Woodley plays Jennifer Stirling, a woman who wakes up in a London hospital in 1960 due to a car accident. Upon waking up she remembers nothing, not even her name, until she returns home and by chance finds a hidden letter. This triggers her to remember the lover for whom she was willing to risk everything.

Tap into clean water EMAYA has launched a project to improve the quality and taste of tap water and p ro m o t e i t s c o n sumption in Mallorca.

As part of Palma City Council’s project to promote the consumption of tap water, Emaya’s board of directors awarded Aquambiente and Suez Treatment Solutions the project for the ultrafiltration of water from the natural sources that supply Palma.

The work will take around 20 months to complete and aims to improve the taste of water and to double the capacity of treating water from source, which will go from 500 to 1,000 litres per second, and generate more water from renewable and sustainable resources.

POTABLE: Emaya is working to improve the taste and the quality of tap water in Mallorca. as reduces the use of chemicals (such as chlorine) that are used to ensure the water is clean.

The current system does not make it possible to take advantage of a significant part of the water that flows from the sources during the rainy season, due to a lack of capacity and because it cannot treat water that has a high degree of turbidity or cloudiness.

The town hall hopes to increase consumption of tap water by the public

and reduce the consumption of plastic bottles. The president of Emaya, Ramon Perpinyà, reminded everyone that Palma’s water is drinkable, has all the health guarantees for human consumption, and is controlled and analysed continuously.

The project will include the construction of a 600 square metre building in Son Tugores with new pipes, pump systems and the renovation of the electrical installation and the control system.

Pepper day THE Feria del Pimenton, or Pepper Fair, is taking place in Felanitx on Sunday, October 20. The pepper is a major export from the town and the event hosts cooking workshops, traditional dances and workshops around the picturesque town.

This incredible scene is an annual spectacle in Madrid as thousands of sheep are led past the city hall in October.

THE festival celebrates the centuriesold tradition of seasonal livestock migration.

The 601st anniversary of the Fiesta de la Trashumancia is marked in the last week of this month, and involves a journey from Casa de Campo to Cibeles.

Conceived by the Association of Transhumance and Nature, it was designed to recognise and celebrate the tradition of seasonal livestock migration.

Since then, hordes of sheep (and

sometimes bulls and horses) take over the Spanish capital once a year. They stumble through the elegant streets of Madrid with their hoofs clattering on the asphalt.

A procession of people singing and dancing precedes them. Keeping the beat with castanets, women in mantillas, customary head coverings, and large, colourful skirts with aprons and men in wide pants tucked into long socks swirl around each other in a ‘jota,’ a traditional Spanish dance.

The dancers wear wooden shoes on spikes, paying homage to the pastors who wear them to navigate muddy fields. Accompanied by the sounds of flutes and tambourines, the Madrid mayor greets the shepherds in front of City Hall.

When the 2,000 sheep appear on the square, the public spills onto the plaza.

The shepherds then pay the mayor 50 maravedís al millar - 50 coins per thousand heads - the payment established in 1418 for crossing the city.

Inclusive play area

#CanWeRunMallorca

THE children’s play area in the Sa Riera park will become the first fully inclusive play area in Palma, with sensorial routes adapted to different disabilities.

After the fire in the children’s play tower a few months ago which resulted in part of the structure of the castle being removed, the Infrastructure Department of the city council decided to design an alternative instead of restoring the damaged park.

The project was presented by the city council on Monday and will involve an ‘organic corner’ in which, in addition to games and fully accessible routes, 50 trees of different varieties and about 4,000 aromatic plants will be planted to create a sensory experience for children using the park.

The project will take approximately five months to complete and work will hopefully be underway by the end of next year.

PALMA will host the #CanWeRunMallorca on Sunday, October 20, in the Parc de Sa Riera, where pets and owners will be able to run together and participate in numerous activities.

The second edition of #CanWeRunMallorca, which is organised by Diario de Mallorca, Prensa Ibérica, and Elite Chip, returns to Parc de Sa Riera. All those who sign up to participate in the race, both in the runner and family categories, will receive a welcome pack and the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors with their dog, in addition to learning about numerous initiatives related to the canine world.

SENTENCED: The man accused of burning his ex-partner alive has been sentenced to 30 years and eight months in jail.

CRASH: A car lost control and crashed into a shop front on the Avenidas in Palma in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

partner but returned the next morning and attempted to enter the house. He was forced to wake up the woman who was asleep in bed with the baby as she had used wire to seal the door shut as a precaution.

Upon entering the property, the man poured a litre of petrol over the woman and set fire to her in the doorway of the bedroom and let her burn alive. The fire could easily have reached the bed in which their baby was sleeping.

In court the man told the judge, “I did not intend to kill her. It got out of hand. I’m so sorry.”

Car crashes into shop in Palma A DRIVER lost control of his vehicle while driving along the Avenidas in Palma and drove the vehicle straight into the front of a shop window.

The accident took place in the early hours of Tuesday morning at around 4.35am.

According to the police investigation, the heavy rain may have caused the driver to lose control and finally send the car crashing into the shop window of an antiques shop.

The impact was so strong that the vehicle went through the window and ended up inside the shop, identified as La boutique de la plata on Calle General Ricardo Ortega.

Fortunately, nobody was injured and the driver tested negative for alcohol.

Protests stop protests A TOTAL of four flights were cancelled between the Balearic Islands and Barcelona on Tuesday due to the pro-independence protests in Barcelona.

As reported by AENA to Europa Press, Vueling cancelled two flights (one round trip) between Palma and Barcelona and two others between Menorca and Barcelona.

On Monday, 16 flights between the islands and Barcelona were cancelled, eight from Palma, six from Menorca, and two in Ibiza.

A FAT H E R w h o m u rd e re d his ex-partner by burning her alive and attempting to kill their baby in Alcudia has been sentenced to 30 years and eight months in prison.

The crime took place in Alcudia in June of 2018 after an argument between the couple. The couple had reportedly been in an unstable relationship, but things escalated when the woman told the accused man that she wished to end the relationship, but that they could continue to live together.

Rape suspect A TEENAGER was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of raping a 14-year-old girl.

According to Ultima Hora, the 18-year-old suspect met the alleged victim months ago through social media.

They reportedly began a friendship which resulted in them agreeing to meet up at his house. It was then that the detained allegedly ‘took her violently’ by the arms and ‘despite the victim’s refusal,’ raped her. He threatened to harm her if she told anybody.

The following morning the young girl reportedly collapsed in tears before confiding in her parents, who contacted National Police.

The teenage suspect was arrested while walking along the street and is expected to appear in court this week.

This is the second rape of a 14-year-old girl registered in Palma in 15 days.

Mobile motorists A WEEK long police operation involving the Guardia Civil and 18 Local Police forces across the Balearics, found 129 drivers illegally using their mobile phones.

More than 170 checkpoints were mounted last month and 7,250 vehicles were checked to ensure they were fitted with hands-free devices in working order.

A further 21 drivers were caught wearing earphones, which is also illegal.

A JANITOR accused of sexually abusing five students at the Sant Agusti School in Palma has been sentenced to 19 years in prison.

Samuel Argandoña Ruiz will serve a minimum of 15 years of the full term. The school has also been instructed to pay compensation of €11,600 to the victims.

School janitor jailed was hired by the school in 2014 as a janitor, but carried out other tasks within the school. He has been held awaiting trial since his arrest a year ago.

It has been reported that Samuel Argandoña had a ‘very close relation-

ship’ with the children and managed to gain their trust.

The first victim was a child under the age of 11. The accused took the student to a classroom and said that he had to measure his penis to order tights, took off his clothes and

touched the boy. This incident, which occurred in May last year, was repeated twice more with the same boy.

Argandoña also asked two students to perform a sex act for him, touched another two boys intimately and threatened them if they told anyone.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION: The Evolution! Mallorca international Film Festival is back on the island from October 23 to 29.

THE Evolution! Mallorca international Film Festival returns to Mallorca between October 23 and 29 with even more films than in previous years.

This year it has been announced that the festival wants to ‘crush intolerances’ and ‘unite cultures and people’ with a programme that was presented at the Café Rialto Living in Palma. It has been announced that the aim of the festival is to take ‘a critical look at the climate we live in today,’ and explore ‘the realities of

Sandra Seeling, founder and organiser of the event, said that the festival continues to grow and this year has received 1,200 entries from 73 countries. The programme will consist of 21 feature films, six feature documentaries and 70 short projects. The Made in Baleares

Among the new additions to the festival, this year, in collaboration with the Mallorca Film Commission, filmmakers from China will come to explore the audiovisual world of Mallorca and the possibility of shooting on the island, according to Seeling.

This year the festival will also feature a television series with the premiere of the BBC Mallorca Files production, with actors Elen Rhys and Julian Looman, who will come to present the series.

Phone thief in cell THE judge of the Criminal Court of Palma handed out a sentence of one-year in prison to a man for allegedly stealing his roommate’s mobile phone.

It is alleged that the Sengalese man grabbed his roommate by the throat and demanded that he give him the mobile phone.

The following day when he refused to return it, the roommate filed a complaint with the police.

The man is also accused of resisting arrest and injuring police when they came to arrest him. The trial took place on Saturday, and following an agreement between his defence lawyer and the prosecution, the sentence was reduced from six years to a year.

Wave of damage A STORM that hit Port d’Andratx on Tuesday morning caused substantial damage to boats in the area.

Many of the vessels that had been moored in the port ended up smashed against the rocks and some of them were completely capsized by the waves. A yacht that was moored at the mouth of the port was also dragged against the rocks and ended up next to the small beach where teams will now work to remove it.

A hotel also suffered damage as a result of the storm as several tables and chairs from the terrace ended up in the sea due to the high winds.

Body found floating THE body of a 57-year-old man was found on the beach in Portopetro on Sunday morning.

Two German tourists were walking along the beach when they spotted the man’s body floating in the water. Initially they believed the man to be in distress and jumped in the water to help him, but upon reaching him they realised that he was not responding and brought him to shore before calling the emergency services.

Once a doctor arrived on the scene, the only thing he could do was to certify the death and alert the forensic doctor on duty in Manacor. The forensic doctor concluded that the death was accidental and was not suspicious. It is assumed that the man went out for a walk and fell from a cliff into the water and that he had been in the water for at least 12 hours.

Terraces trashed A ROW ended in arrest for a man suspected of destroying two terraces and 12 cars on the Paseo Maritimo in Palma on Sunday.

Following an argument with his girlfriend, the 21-year-old man reportedly became angry and began to pick up chairs and tables from two bar terraces in the area and throw them. The woman fled from the man in fear and was unharmed.

After allegedly destroying the terraces, the suspect apparently walked along the nearby streets and smashed the wing mirrors of a dozen parked cars.

The man was apprehended when police showed up on the scene and found him sitting at a bus stop. He was arrested and statements were taken from witnesses and the bar owners before the detained was taken before the courts to be sentenced.

Recycling for research

TEN pink containers for recycling glass have been distributed in five places around the city of Palma for cancer research.

The containers have been installed in Plaza de Santa Eulalia, Plaza de España, Porta de Santa Catalina, Plaza Paris and Plaza de Born. The pink containers have been installed to collect glass for the ‘Recycle for them’ campaign organised

by Ecovidrio for the second year in collaboration with Emaya and the city council of Palma.

The containers will be in these locations for the next two weeks and the collected glass from the containers will be donated to the Sandra Ibarra foundation for breast cancer research and turned into money.

MISSING: The family of missing girl, Rosa Corzo Rey, are asking for help to find her after she went missing on October 11 in Palma.

Help find Rosa THE family of Rosa Corzo Rey, a 15-year-old girl who has been missing in Palma since October 11, have launched an appeal to help locate her.

It is reported by the family that nobody has seen Rosa since her disappearance and they have distributed her picture in an attempt to help find her.

Rosa is tall and slim with some of her hair dyed red. She also has a tattoo on her arm.

If anyone has seen Rosa, whose disappearance has already been reported to the police, or have any information that could help her family find her, please contact the police immediately.

Asbestos concern for residents A RESIDENT of Alaro has voiced his concern about bags of rubble that contain asbestos which he claims are not being correctly disposed of.

According to Twitter user, @11dBastos in a thread, a council worker assured him that they do not want to break up the rubble due to the risk and high toxicity of the asbestos. All regulations state that any type of material that contains asbestos must be handled correctly and with the proper equipment.

It seems that in Alaro, some residents are disposing of construction materials that contain asbestos at the local rubbish bins which they say is alarmingly close to a football field where young people play and people train on a daily basis.

RISK: Construction materials that potentially contain asbestos are being left at local bins and posing a risk to residents.

Asbestos is one of the components of fibro-cement that contains microscopic

fibres that can become airborne and cause respiratory problems.

Post office hack THE Twitter account of the Correos (Post Office) in Mallorca was hacked on Tuesday morning for a short time.

At around 9am the profile was hacked and strange messages started to appear such as ‘From today your shipments will contain a little cocaine as a gift,’ ‘If you need to send drugs in your packages, do not use our service,’ and ‘Our service is rubbish but we are experts in the transport of drugs.’

The post office quickly regained control of their account and police are now investigating who was responsible for the hack and how they managed to gain access to the account.

Critical condition A MOTORCYCLIST has been left in critical condition after being involved in an accident with a car on the Valldemossa road.

According to SAMU 061, the accident took place shortly before 8am at the crossroads of s’Esgleieta.

An ambulance attended the site of the accident and took the victim to the University Hospital of Son Espases, where he was admitted in a critical state of health.

Electoral roll FIGURES released from the latest census of voters in Mallorca shows an increase of 1,100 people.

The increase in numbers is due to young people reaching the voting age of 18.

There are 289,448 voting in the N ovember General Election.

International Day for the Eradication of Poverty EAPN-Balearics, the network for social inclusion, started with several events prior to the Inter national Day for the Eradication of Poverty today (Thursday, October 17).

A banner was unveiled on the balcony of the town hall in Palma calling for action against poverty and later on, artist Victoria Maldi made a speech appealing to residents to show solidarity to improve the situation of people at risk of exclusion.

Victoria Maldi also stated that by 2030 poverty must be eradicated, according to the Sustainable Development Objectives.

A REPORT in the Mail on Sunday says that many Conservative MPs and ministers are up in arms against EU Commissioner Michel Barnier after he made it clear that in his opinion UK government changes to the proposed deal were insufficient.

He doesn’t believe that the Irish backstop alternative is sufficient to gain support from the 27 member states but rather than finalise negotiations last Monday, the EU was prepared to allow talks to continue until the eve of the Thursday summit in the hopes that a compromise could be found.

As time ticked away it also has to be remembered that any new deal has to be translated into all of the languages of each member state and should also be reviewed by legal teams to ensure that the wording is in accordance with the law in each country.

Prime Minister Johnson appeared slightly closer to getting a Brexit deal to put before Parliament at the special next Saturday sitting as he has made some concessions on the Northern Ireland ‘back stop’ as well as removing the concept of a veto from Ulster politicians in Stormont, although he wants to keep it as a future possibility.

LAST Sunday, Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage posted a tweet showing a row of Union flags in Parliament Square saying ‘Share this photo to wind a Remainer up.’ Large numbers of Remainers have responded saying it’s our flag too.

Should he refuse to do so and go ahead with a no-deal departure against the express contents of the ‘Benn Law’ then the whole process of British democracy could be set back on its heels.

The EU negotiators have accepted that there has been a softening of the government position on Northern

Ireland, but it may well be insufficient for them to agree to the latest proposed deal and the fact that the government does not have a majority certainly strengthens the EU hand.

What no-one can predict is what would happen if the EU decided not to allow a further extension and although many consider this is

extremely unlikely, it is one of a number of possible scenarios.

The Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn continues to oppose the concept of a General Election at this stage although it now seems more likely that he would acquiesce if and when an additional extension is applied for and agreed.

Next Budget THE British government has announced that it will unveil its next Budget on N ovember 6. If Britain doesn’t leave the EU at the end of October, then it is possible that much of its content will have to be rewritten.

A NURSE, aged 46, has been arrested by the National Police on charges of allegedly stealing opioid, psychotropic and narcotic drugs from several health centres in the Valencia region where she worked.

The arrested woman apparently stole medicines which, if administered inappropriately, could cause serious damage to people’s health. The woman worked in several health centres in the community and allegedly took medicines that

were locked away, as reported yesterday by sources of the National Police in a statement.

The investigation began when the police were informed of the disappearance of three vials of opioid drugs (morphine and doline in particular).

The health centre began to lock the drugs away but more disappeared during the same shift when the accused woman was working. The police arrested the woman and released her after taking her statement and warned her that she will have to appear before a judge for sentencing.

Twitter pays less tax IN a fresh example of tax avoidance in multi billion dollar companies, annual accounts have revealed that the Spanish affiliate of Twitter pays less in corporate tax than it spends on one worker’s salary annually.

According to the figures issued to Spain’s Company Registry, Twitter Spain paid only €113,131 in company taxes in 2018, and registered an annual profit of just €221,038, 13.9 per cent on the previous year

with revenues of €4.5 million.

The figures the company have revealed are only representative of the income made from the marketing, advertising and business-development services it provides to the Irish branch of the Twitter.

The company actually made a great amount more in profits but it transferred the majority of its revenue to Ireland where Twitter, along with other multinational companies such as Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Apple, make use of the 12 per cent

business tax rate.

Ireland holds the largest share of the US company’s business in Europe, which allows the Spanish division of the company to transfer the money without ringing alarm bells.

The total tax paid by Twitter Spain in 2018 which was reported at €113,131, is €20,000 less than the average wage of one of its 19 workers which sits at €131,578 before taxes, including social security contributions and other employee costs.

SEIZED: Fake toys of well-known brands were discovered.

Counterfeit toys IT would appear that criminals are getting ready for Christmas early.

Police have just seized 65,000 counterfeit toys with a market value of more than €372,000.

The toys, which police say were packed and ready to be shipped throughout Spain, lacked the relevant child safety controls, putting children at risk.

Officers of the National Police and officials of the Tax Agency, seized the fake toys at an industrial warehouse in Fuenlabrada (Madrid).

The investigation started when tax officials received international information on possible

imports of counterfeit toys. In particular, they detected a consignment from the UK with 249 packages suspected of containing fakes.

National Police together with officials from the Tax Agency followed up a delivery of 32 packages to an industrial estate in Fuenlabrada.

Once the shipment was registered and the packages opened, the officers found they contained a large number of counterfeit toys of well-known brands, prepared to be distributed and marketed throughout Spain.

As a result of the operation, officers arrested a woman as the alleged perpetrator of a crime against industrial property.

Maritime drugs bust A PLEASURE craft carrying cocaine from Brazil to Spain has been intercepted.

Five people have been arrested for drugs trafficking after being stopped trying to bring more than half a ton of cocaine and other narcotic

substances into Spain.

The drugs were stowed in secret compartments on the Dutch-owned vessel registered under the name Imagine.

The operation involved the Guardia Civil, National Police

and the Tax Agency, in cooperation with the Netherlands Police, the Estonian Police and the Portuguese Judicial Police.

The investigation began in Barcelona and followed the gang during 2018 through Valencia, Huelva, Granada and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

The N etherlands-based gang were tracked for two years while they planned their operation.

In May 2018, the gang set off from the port of Valencia aboard the vessel Imagine and began their journey to Rio de Janeiro and Itajaí in Brazil returning to the Portuguese Azores where they were intercepted at the request of Spain and the Netherlands.

In July 2019 the coordinated international police operation was launched resulting in the arrest so far of five people of Estonian, British and Dutch nationality.

As well as drugs, the police uncovered a firearm with the serial number erased, as well as cash.

Two week review Commentary by Moneycorp THE Bank of England, Brexit and the economy were the three influe n c e s o n t h e p o u n d i n re c e n t weeks. A member of the Monetary Policy Committee stated that, “it might well be appropriate… perhaps to loosen policy at some stage,” regardless of the outcome of Brexit.

The manufacturing PMI came in better than ex­ pected at 48.3 and services at 49.5. There was, af­ ter many robust exchanges, news of a break­ through on Brexit which gave some assistance.

Initially, reports of a time­limited Irish Backstop agreement caused a sharp rise but when those reports proved unfounded, led to an equally sharp fall. However, talks between Boris Johnson and Leo Varadkar proved more promising and as the week drew to a close, Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay was heading to Brussels for more talks.

In Europe, the Economic Bulletin from the ECB summed up economic prospects as ‘protracted weakness, the persistence of downside risks and muted inflationary pressures.’ This did nothing to help the euro and softer PMI readings across Eu­ rope for Manufacturing and Services had nothing to offer.

The composite index for Europe came in at 50.1, just making the growth zone, but weak readings for Germany caused particular concern.

News of US tariffs on a range of EU products ap­ peared to do nothing to move the currency, but reports of disagreement over the planned QE strategy did help the euro make gains against the US dollar.

Economic statistics showed that the pace of growth in the US is slowing. The ISM Manufactur­ ing PMI caused particular concern when it came in two points lower than expected at 47.8. News of a potential ‘currency pact’ with China did noth­ ing to move the US dollar despite the fact that it

Oil prices swayed the Canadian dollar ­ a fall saw the Canadian dollar follow suit and a rise gave the Loonie a boost. The General Election is also having an influence; Canadians are set to go to the polls on October 21 and as the date draws nearer there is some volatility as the market con­

siders a potential change at the top and a subsequent shift in policy.

As expected, the Reserve Bank of Australia low­ ered its cash rate from 1% to 0.75%; the currency had been making gains ahead of the statement but tumbled after indications that further cuts may follow. Westpac’s survey of Australian con­ sumer sentiment hit a four­year low, piling further pressure on the Aussie, but concerns over Brexit helped the Aussie make gains against the pound mid­week. Optimism over a possible end to the US­China trade war also gave the currency a boost.

In New Zealand, the Quarterly Survey of Busi­ ness Opinion showed a further drop in business confidence to the weakest level since September 2010. A larger­than­expected government surplus and disappointing US inflation data helped the ki­ wi absorb the blow, but the potential for an end to Brexit uncertainty pushed the currency lower against the pound.

What to do in the event of an emergency in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics.

In Spain there are in effect two groups which most people would understand as being ‘the police.’ The National Police (Policía Nacional) who have jurisdiction in the towns and cities and the Guardia Civil outside the towns and cities. The Local Police are employed by town halls; they basically deal with property found, and enforce local laws.

Whilst they have a power of arrest, when exercised they must take the arrested person to the National Police or Guardia Civil according to where the crime took place.

National Police and the Guardia Civil deal with all crimes, missing persons etc in their jurisdiction. The National Police also deal with all applications for immigration paperwork, NIEs, EU Citizens Registration and for non EU nationals, Residencia, etc.

The 24 hours national emergency numbers for Spanish speakers are: 091 - police, 061 health emergencies 080 - firefighters.

By calling 902 102 112, but only when the perpetrator is unknown, one can give details of certain crimes, including:- burglaries, car theft, theft or loss of documents or belongings. The service is available in English from 9am to 9pm seven days a week, and from 9am to 3pm in French, German and Italian. Having given details of the crime, you must go to the National Police station which you nominate, within 48 hours to make the report using the information supplied on the telephone. In the case of robbery, where threat or force has been used, victims should call 112 at the time for police attendance, or go directly to the police station which covers that area to make a report.

In Spain the operators speak English, French, German and Italian, in addition to Spanish and will liaise with the emergency services when the caller does not speak Spanish. Rent aid for flood victims HALF-A-MILLION EUROS has been set aside to help those left destitute following recent floods.

The regional government has allocated €500,000 to help those made homeless by the recent floods pay their rent.

Subsidies of between €420 and €490 per month were approved at a plenary session last Friday and are intended for residents of the Vega Baja and Vall d’Albaida.

An assessment of the general state of housing was made in the two weeks following the storm, with some properties declared uninhabitable and irreparable.

This situation has forced large numbers of people to leave their homes permanently. Therefore, the Generalitat has allocated half-a-million euros of its own funds, with the aim of enabling them to find ‘dignified’ alternative accommodation.

Only one application for aid per dwelling may be submitted. The documentation must be presented in the post-emergency coordination offices or in local town halls, preferably where the home is located.

At the same time, the regional government has approved aid for another 16 municipalities, with a total of €10 million set aside for urgent work.

CHARITY WALK: An estimated €7,500 was raised for ASDICA by people taking part in a fundraising walk at Finca Galatzo on Sunday.

Charitable steps

THREE HUNDRED children and adults participated in a fundraising walk at Finca Galatzo in Calvia on Sunday.

After completing the walk, the participants were invited to a barbecue and paella at Sa Vinya in Es Capdella where they were entertained by singers Izzy Newman and Brooke Judkins.

Initial figures suggest that the walk, organised by the International Rotary Club, has raised more than €7,500 for ASDICA, a local association which supports young people with disabilities. The walk is an annual event organised by the club.

President Ralf Jansen expressed his thanks to the Council for Sports and Tourism, the staff at Finca Galatzo and the IFOC guides, the town hall of Calvia, Foundation Handisport, Generali, the 41 Club and Sa Vinya Restaurant for their ongoing support.

THE University of Malaga and Velez-Malaga Council have donated €7,500 to local associations.

Mayor, Antonio Moreno Ferrer, accompanied

by Juan Antonio Garcia Galindo, vice-rector of Institutional Policy of the UMA, and Diego J Vera Jurado, director of the General Foundation of the UMA delivered three donations of around €2,500 each to local charities and organisations.

The recipients were Relatives of Alzheimer Patients of La Axarquia (AFADAX) to the Association for the Protection of the Mentally Handicapped of Velez-Malaga (ASPROVELEZ) and the Association of the Handicapped of Velez-Malaga (AMIVEL).

Mayor, Antonio Moreno Ferrer thanked the University of Malaga for its involvement and collaboration in the joint organisation of many cultural and educational projects in the city as well as praising the work of the organisations which provide such a sterling service across the region.

“One of the objectives that we have is to attract Velez-Malaga training projects that improve the employability of our residents and continue to establish Velez-Malaga as a town of culture,” said the mayor.

The courses, which took place across the summer, reinforced the town as a hub of social affairs, culture, music and sport throughout Axarquia.

New cars on the children’s ward

ALFAZ is preparing for the 22nd edition of International Day on October 27.

T h e I n t e r n a t i o n a l D a y, a f i r s t f o r t h e area, was created to celebrate something that Alfaz in fact celebrates 365 days of the year, thanks to its multicultural society.

This year’s edition differs from those of previous years because for the first time it will be held in Plaza Juan Carlos I in front of the Casa de Cultura instead of the Polideportivo municipal sports complex.

Sixty-four local groups and associations of all nationalities are taking part in the event, an increase of 14 on last year.

The day will begin at 10.30am, with the official inauguration at 11am and continuing until 5pm with representatives from the different groups introducing members of the public to their countries’ cuisine, music, dances and folklore.

Martine Mertens, Alfaz’s councillor for Residents of other Nationalities also asked as many of the participants and visitors to the events to come in their national costumes to add still more colour to an already colourful day.

YOUNGSTERS at Marbella’s Costa del Sol hospital now have two electric cars to drive themselves to tests and operations in.

The idea is to help children overcome fear, stress and boredom in a difficult time.

The cars have been donated by the charity Golfriends Puma Volkswagen, with charity organiser Carlos Coronil thinking up the idea.

The Paediatric ward received the cars t h i s w e e k , w i t h t h e d e p a r t m e n t ’s h e a d nurse saying that it is a positive move which will help children settle into what can be a daunting environment.

The cash to buy the cars came from a monthly golf tournament organised by Carlos for the past five years.

As well as helping the hospital, associations and other charities have also benefited.

It may be a little while before the children drive to operations as the nursing staff want to see how other hospitals in Spain organise similar initiatives.

In the meantime, children will be free to enjoy themselves by driving round the ward.

ALMERIA wants to keep up the momentum of the city’s 2019 national gastronomy capital status.

With a view to seeing the provincial capital widely recognised as a top ‘foodie’ tourist destination, the city council has devised a fresh marketing strategy for next year.

Speaking at the inauguration of the fourth ‘Almeria beyond 2019 Ideas Forum, city mayor Ramon Fernandez-Pacheco unveiled a new slogan for 2020: ‘Almeria Ciudad Gastronomica. Para comersela,’ translating more or less as ‘Almeria Gastronomy City. Irresistible.’

The council leader revealed there will be a new headquarters in the city’s central market for activities promoting cuisine. Also on the agenda is an annual gastronomy congress, which promises to bring together top professionals and the best of national cooking.

Further plans to appeal to the gastro tourism market include creating a sticker to go on all products exported from Almeria, a network of gastro cities and a map of local dishes.

In addition, linking heritage and cuisine and strengthening the connection between health and diet under the slogan ‘Almeria puerta de dieta mediterranea,’ or Almeria gateway to the Mediterranean diet.

The CSA is an annual evaluation of the sustainability practices of more than 4,700 companies in all sectors, focused on economic, so­ cial and environmental criteria, as well as industry specific standards.

LEGALLY SPEAKING Who maintains terraces?

Are community terraces the whole responsi­ bility of the community? The terraces accord­ ing to the original builder are the responsibility of the community, but several of the houses have a shared terrace and others have their own small terrace area.

I believe the community is only responsible for the tiled roof area, but not the terrace walls. Several of the owners have paid for maintenance of the terrace area out of their own pockets, but other owners claim the community should pay.

Any­ thing outside the walls, such as terraces or garden plots, is community property. However, ‘exclusive use’ is usually as­ signed to the individual owners and Spanish courts have usually ruled that ordinary maintenance is their responsibili­ ty. From your description I gather that your community has semi­detached houses and some partially roofed terraces, which complicates the issue. It would be a good idea to clarify this at the next AGM.

Thomas Cook reprieve THERE was a piece of good news for those staff made redundant following the collapse of the Thomas Cook holiday empire as an independent travel agent has taken over all of their high street shops.

Hays Travel was formed in 1980 by John Hays and his wife Irene and expanded in the north of England before becoming a major name in high street travel agencies reaching a turnover last year

of £1 billion (€1.1 billion). They have now pur­ chased all 555 Thomas Cook shops for an undis­ closed amount and are looking to re­employ the 2,500 knowledgeable work force who used to man those stores.

The couple believe there is still a strong market for low cost package tours and this acquisition will cement their place as the largest high street travel agent in the UK and generate significant income.

New £20 notes design

By John Smith THE Bank of England has an­ nounced that it will be issuing a new £20 note produced in poly­ mer featuring the artist JMW Turner on February 20 next year.

Always alert to the fact that counterfeiting is a major problem, especially with the £20 denomina­ tion, the Bank said that this new note contains sophisticated secu­ rity features making it the most secure Bank of England banknote yet. For the first time, the note in­ corporates two windows and a

Winner, winner, chicken dinner A NEW piece of research from Mintel says that in the same way ‘middle class’ and more affluent shoppers have turned to Aldi and Lidl in the UK, they are also frequenting so-called ‘chicken shops.’

This means that despite financial problems for some food chains, British diners are set to spend £7.5 billion (€8.25 billion) on burgers and chicken in 2019.

Thirty-seven per cent of consumers are ordering home deliveries more often from burger and chicken

outlets than they did a year ago and this seems likely to increase.

One of the reasons given is consumers feel these outlets are now offering more healthy options than they did a year ago, which has encouraged them to increase their patronage and buy that more wholesome meal.

Ironically, those same restaurants and take-aways have seen a fall in spend from those who are less well off.

The new £20 note will be the first to feature the signature of Sarah John, the Bank’s Chief Cashier, but those with paper notes needn’t rush out to spend them as notice will be given six months before they cease to be le­ gal tender.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT ONE thing the Brits have never lacked is courage. World wars, the blitz, Roman invaders and a whole host of past adversaries, have always failed to quench the indomitable spirit of our great Island race.

Well I’m sorry to say that whole scenario is now changing. An enemy more deadly than all the opposing forces that have assailed us in the past now threatens to engulf our once great country and is slowly but surely eating us away from within. For the first time ever people are genuinely frightened.

Today’s adversaries are the bureaucrats; the MPs, the so­called leaders of the British people; men and women who were voted in­ to positions of power and trusted to protect and stand up for the British public and defend their rights and their heritage. The betrayal by these people is making UK citizens feel even more unsafe in their own country than they felt when the Nazi jackboot threatened them in the Second World War. At least at that time we were all in it together. The ene­ my was there for all to see, and the Brits knew who, and what they were fighting for.

I REST MY CASE: ‘Preacher’ comedian almost won the show! utterly baffled as to how they should react or even behave. I’ll give you an example. In my cabaret spot I do slip in a couple of extremely mild ‘racist’ jokes. As the act has never really changed (I know, I know!) I have seen the dif­ ferent reaction to these same gags from British audiences over many years.

At first the stories were generally met with

open guffaws of pretty innocuous merriment.

As the years went by reactions slowly altered.

These different phases went from full on laughter to somewhat derisive scoffing. We then moved on to laughter mixed with occa­ sional whoops of defiant communal assent.

The next phase involved rather more sub­ dued sniggers with people looking at each other

to see if their merriment was being shared. We have now hit rock bottom. What I see now is subdued embarrassment and actual fear on the audience faces as they furtively glance around to see if they could be involved in some type of ‘offence’ that could get them reprimanded or even arrested. And it’s not pretty.

The British spirit is being defeated by politi­ cal correctness ‘Uman rights advocators and the appeasers of minority groups to a point where they are utterly confused as to what is right and wrong and are actually in fear of re­ vealing their true feelings in public. And it’s all one way traffic.

An example of this was that awful black ‘preacher’ comedian who took part in the re­ cent BGT champions final. His whole act was racist. He spoke in an utterly derogatory way about having white girls out on a date and how black girls’ reactions were far more ‘with it’ and acceptable. If he had been a white co­ median talking about black women in the same way there would have been uproar from the luvvies that would probably have in­ volved legal proceedings. As it was he nearly won the show! I rest my case.

REPEATEDLY nowadays we read how the UK police struggle to cope with increased demands, especially knife crime.

Plus news of one force, Cleveland police, rated ‘inadequate’ and put in special measures!

Let alone the Met and its nonexistent Westminster paedo ring fiasco.

Everyone has an opinion about how the police should be deployed based on their personal needs, but surely their pri­ mary role is the protection of life, prop­ erty and keeping the peace? Modern so­ ciety has added additional burdens but they must be secondary to this.

People who don’t feel secure in their homes and neighbourhoods are hardly likely to care about what some person posted on the internet about gender di­ versity. Why do the police have to be re­ sponsible for policing the internet and child porn? There are better qualified

POLICE: A total rethink is needed. people to do this and either prosecute or liaise with police to make arrests.

Basically, why doesn’t this crisis trigger a total rethink about police work by the present government?

In recent years, policing has become relatively inefficient with many officers spending up to 80 per cent of their time doing admin in police stations with an equally large civilian backup. There have been, admittedly, some good initiatives (giving officers mobile data terminals to streamline reporting and administration) but more needs to be done like: • Simplifying ‘red tape’ reporting re­

quirements (a simple burglary prosecu­ tion requires 1,000 steps and 70 forms); • Reducing sickness absence, and ear­ ly retirement on health grounds; • Multi­skilling police officers to in­ clude intelligence processing; • Time off in lieu rather than costly overtime payment for all but the most junior staff (common in industry); • Regrading staff: if ‘back office’ func­ tions are fulfilled by officers, pay and benefits should be adjusted accordingly (as in industry); • Merging police forces.

MPs should also cut their ‘back office’ staff that cost us so much in ‘expenses.’

They simply need to work more efficient­ ly. Or doesn’t that apply, provided they can get their nap in the House?

Or find ways to cause as much anti­ Brexit aggro as possible for the govern­ ment?

CHELYS - Horological Sculpture NICK HORNE’S Rich Pick Freelance correspondent, London, England CHELYS derives from the Latin form of the origi­ nal ancient Greek for ‘tortoise’ which described a musical instrument made of its shell, its con­ vex form resembling that of this chronometer.

According to fable Hermes found a tortoise near his mother’s house and hollowed out the shell to make the sound box of a seven­string instrument, the first lyre of the ancient Greeks.

Winch Design and Thomas Mercer have combined once again to design and create a unique chronometer joined this year by Mar­ mor Hotavlje stone cutters par excellence for the CHELYS chronometer. The CHELYS is a sculpture fusing the arts of horology , stone carving and yacht design.

Winch Design create bespoke homes on land, in the air and of course at sea. The design studio of choice for individuals demanding the highest levels of design excellence.

Thomas Mercer is a name forever associated with the marine chronometer, manufacturing since 1858 exclusive chronometers to accent the interiors of yachts and residences.

In 1721 residents of the Slovenian village of Hotavlje discovered the riches hidden in their

mountain and carved their first stone. An­ drew Winch, founder and director of the eponymous studio said, “Yet again, it is a pleasure to be able to work closely with Thomas Mercer to bring to life another unique timepiece which sings with the spirit of the sea. The craftsmanship of both Thomas Mercer and Marmor Ho­ tavlje has rendered this outstanding and unique horological sculpture a triumph and showcases the time honoured skillsets of both these inspirational stu­ dios.”

Revealed at the 2019 Monaco Yacht Show on September 26, CHELYS is a unique celebra­ tion of horology, design and stone carving. The case was inspired by a mythological musical instrument, the movement is housed in a tube case made of extra white crystal offering an all round view of the inner workings, the elegant open work dial magnifies the intricacies of the manifestly complicated movement and its stone setting pairs per­ fectly the white onyx body. The sophisticated lines of the CHELYS are carved from ivory onyx, a semi­precious white stone with an immaculate crystalline back­ ground with waves undulating through its structure. Rare and precious this stone has been valued since ancient times. Weighing in at 25 kilos and measuring 44 by 39 by 22 cms this sculpture has been hand crafted by the artisans of Marmor Hotavlje.

No trumpets please!

MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man MY friend came over for a few days and booked himself into one of the nicest spa hotels in the area.

I dropped him off ­ I live 15 minutes away ­ and by the time I got home he had rung me to come and pick him up. He told me he went to his room, dropped his bag off and went down to the pool area to relax in the sun. As his bum hit the sun lounger some geezer started playing a trumpet. That was enough for him ­ he was gone. Which brings me to my grump.

Why would you have someone playing a trumpet round a swimming pool? I mean maybe along with the no bottles, no ball games, no lilos they should have added no bloody trumpets.

I had another friend staying there too a few days later and I told him the story.

He was staying in a room over the restau­ rant and when he woke up in morning he was launched into the day by the music coming from below. Here’s a tip ­ you

don’t need very loud music all the time ­ especially not at breakfast time.

The same now applies to many budget airlines. The repetitive loud music as you are boarding is just ridiculous.

It’s not a bit of gentle soothing, calm­ ing music but a blaring loop of their theme tune which goes on forever! Fun­ ny enough I had to use Ryanair this week and they didn’t have the noise pollution, but made up for it with a filthy aircraft.

I was allowed to board as the last pas­ senger got off. I needed to go to the bathroom and it was disgusting. I’ll leave it there but obviously it had not been cleaned for some time. I’d love to know if there are any official rules about the cleanliness of aircraft before they board passengers. I know it’s cheap but surely there must be some rules about it.

There’s no point in mentioning it to the airline, that’s for sure. The other thing is why do people applaud when the plane lands? That’s what it’s meant to do. I guess if we had been through mad turbu­ lence and the pilot had managed to keep it in the air for four hours it would be worth a round of applause.

It’s not really necessary after a per­ fectly smooth hour and a half flight from Santiago to Malaga!

DEADLY WEAPON A RECENT Euro Weekly News piece report­ ed that distraction caused by mobile phones are responsible for an annual 390 deaths on Spanish roads.

Not surprising, not when we’re living in Spain, which I believe has one of Europe’s highest proportion of smartphone users.

I’m aware that people die on UK roads and elsewhere in the developed world be­ cause either they or someone else was paying more attention to their mobile than the road.

But it’s time to agree that a mobile can turn into a deadly weapon once it’s inside a car or, worse, a lorry.

Very often, though, in the small inland city where I live, you see a car pulled in at the kerb on a narrow road because the dri­ ver is talking on their mobile.

So, what is the usual reaction? Blaring horns from the cars behind because some­ one doesn’t want to break the law. Talk about inconsistent.

MAXIMUM working hours introduced this year in Spain are forcing employers to apply strict limits to the time staff are on duty.

Companies that cannot implement the new laws are being given time to negotiate with employees before any sanctions are imposed.

Businesses are now required to record staff start and finish times daily to make it clear what overtime people are working and breaks during the day which must not be more than nine hours.

Registration systems must guarantee the authenticity and integrity of the working times register and records must be kept for four years and made available to trade unions and the Labour and Social Security Inspectorate (LSSI) Workers’ pay is not affected by the rule, so the law shouldn’t cost businesses any more where they already reward staff for overtime.

So far, the LSSI hasn’t announced a cut-off date when noncompliant employers will start to face fines of up to €6,250.

There are no plans at present to follow up the ruling, so bosses are unlikely to have to worry unless employees raise the alarm over practices.

It’s difficult to imagine how the regulations will be policed as there is no planned follow-up and there is no stipulated system of recording hours.

Unless electronic recording is introduced across the board, which would involve businesses in additional expense - and could raise questions about employee privacy - then it’s unlikely the ruling will have any real value.

DECODING your ‘appetite pendulum’ can help you lose weight - without the need to diet.

This is according to psy­ chologist Dr Helen McCarthy who believes we can retrain our appetites and to recog­

nise how much our food ac­ tually needs in order to shed the kilos.

The author told the Daily Mail that we have all been trained to eat at certain times of the day, rather than eating when we are hungry and stopping when we are full.

She claims the ‘appetite pen­ dulum’ starts at 0 when hunger is neutral, moves into minus when hungry and plus when we begin to eat.

And Dr McCarthy advised eat­ ing should only begin when hunger gets to minus three ­ definitely hungry ­ stressing the importance of stopping at plus three ­ just full.

The former NHS psychologist said many of us eat too much ei­ ther because we’re enjoying the food and don’t want to stop, or we’re eating mindlessly.

She encourages clients not to give up any foods they love and devise their own meal plans rather than be

dictated by a diet.

The weight loss psychologist, who is also training other pro­ fessionals in this way of thinking, says hunger signs aren’t a bad thing, pointing out that ‘mild hunger in the hour or so before your next meal or snack is healthy.’

She went on to say, “when you never feel mild hunger, your body may have been continu­ ously digesting food, with no chance to stop and rest. Under­ standing and respect­ ing mild hunger lets your gut work in the way that it evolved.”

According to her research, “the hunger mes­ sage to the brain is our body’s inbuilt nat­ ural way of letting us know we’ve used up the energy from our last meal, and that we’re having to

switch over to using our stored energy, ie fat, so the hunger signals are switched off.

“We can go a whole day, or month or lifetime, without actually getting hungry ­ and it’s one of the biggest reasons we put on weight.”

Soaring property prices IBIZA TOWN has been revealed as the city with the highest property prices in Spain.

For 12 years, San Sebastian in Spain’s northern Basque Country has been crowned most pricey, but the capital of the Balearic Island of Ibiza has now taken the title with prices reaching €3,709 per sqm in the second quarter of the year.

The statistics have been released by the Public Works Ministry, and politicians and real estate experts agree that tourism is the main rea­ son for the rise in the cost of prop­ erty.

Ibiza Town had the 45th most expensive houses in the early 2000s during the property boom.

By the second quarter of 2009, af­ ter the property bubble burst, the city had jumped to 36th position.

In the last five years alone, the value of property on the island has reportedly risen by 56.6 per cent.

Although the data from the Pub­ lic Works Ministry is based on the assessment value of a property, tourist apartments are singled out as being the main cause

for the rise in prices.

Housing councillor for United Podemos, Aitor Morras, last week questioned where the 400,000 people who arrive in August stay if

there are only 50,000 registered residents and 150,000 tourist places.

“To homes that are being used for tourism,” he pointed out.

But while political parties agree there needs to be more inspections to clamp down on illegal tourist apartments ­– they are banned from all residential buildings ­ it is apparently hard to get a consensus on potential solutions.

Jose Vicente Marí of the PP be­ lieves that a new zoning plan (PGOU) needs to be approved as soon as possible to allow new homes to be built.

But the current city council does not.

Morrás, says that, according to the land registry, the city has 23,715 properties for 50,000 inhab­ itants.

“There are plenty of properties but we suspect that too many are being used for tourists and we have to discover which,” he ex­ plains, adding that he would like to see a door­to­door census com­ piled as the macro data is proving “useless.”

Foundations laid for reclaims AROUND 130,000 British holiday homeowners who fell victim to Spain’s property crash in 2008 are beginning to win back millions they paid for properties that were never built.

By 2008 Spain was building more homes than the UK, France and Germany combined.

But when the credit crunch hit, thousands of Britons lost a re­ ported €5.8 billion in deposits, part payments on properties bought off­plan. Most of them were never completed and left half built.

They tried to sue and reclaim

money from developers, them­ selves bankrupt, to no avail.

But in December 2015, a rul­ ing by Spain’s supreme court made it possible for those af­ fected to claim directly from the banks. Prior to this, only an esti­ mated 5 per cent of Brits who lost thousands had bank guar­ antees and were eligible to do so.

Speaking to the British press, Luis Cuervo, chief executive of Spanish Legal Reclaims which is handling several cases on behalf of Brits, said that while banks in Spain continue to fight the claims, ‘there is now a real sense of momentum among in­ vestors seeking justice.’

But he added that ‘while legal precedent is now on the side of those who need it most, time is not.’

The Supreme Court has ruled that claims must be lodged by October 2020, so anyone wish­ ing to make a claim must do so in the next year.

According to the law firm, the average case has taken more than 12 months to complete, but it is only now that the banks are starting to pay out.

Claimants must provide evi­ dence of a contract with the de­ veloper, payments made into the developer’s account and the fact the property never materi­ alised.

Prime market activity STRONG property market activity and growth is being experienced in five of S p a i n ’s k e y c i t i e s , giving potential buyers a renewed sense of confidence, according to new analysis.

The highest residential prime property prices are in Madrid where values in­ creased 9.7 per cent during the year to March 2019, and are 50.1 per cent high­ er than five years ago. This is the strongest growth of any region in Spain.

Transaction activity has also been strong and sales numbers are now just 23.6 per cent below their peak in 2006, compared with a national average of 39 per cent.

These are the findings of an insight residential report compiled by international real estate advisor Savills.

It points out that new residential projects are be­ ing built and the increase in construction looks set to be maintained.

Values in Cataluña in­ creased 7.6 per cent during the year to March 2019, taking the five year growth to 40.5 per cent and al­ though price growth has

slowed slightly, annual growth is still the second highest after Madrid. Dur­ ing the same period, trans­ actions have doubled and the number of develop­ ment permits has increased 523.9 per cent, demon­ strating the renewed activi­ ty in the market.

Valencia is Spain’s third largest city and although it’s just an hour and 40 minutes by high­speed train to Madrid, property prices are significantly lower than those in the capital and Barcelona, which attracts investors looking for good rental returns.

Price growth has been slower than some other re­ gions of Spain, with values rising 17.5 per cent during the past five years. Yet, transaction numbers have doubled, indicating an ac­ tive market.

Malaga has undergone a transformation in recent years, the report points out, and the city is no longer just considered as a gateway to other popular places along the Costa del Sol, but a destination in its own right.

The average sale price for residential properties in the city in the first quarter of 2019 was 9.9 per cent high­

er than the average sale price in the same period a year before.

Palma, the capital of Mal­ lorca has become a high­ end destination with new Michelin starred restau­ rants and five­star hotels opening. But across the Balearic Islands, although the average sale price is in­ creasing, up 7.3 per cent over the year to the first quarter of 2019, the num­ ber of sales has slowed due

to a lack of good stock.

Annual residential trans­ actions fell 6.3 per cent from the first quarter of 2018 to the second quarter of 2019. However, the city continues to attract a range of buyers.

The Balearic Islands have bucked the trend some­ what with price growth of 37 per cent over the past five years, behind only Madrid and Cataluña in terms of growth.

Mazda3 TCR unveiled MAZDA MOTORSPORTS announced this month the newest addition to its motorsports programme with the unveiling of the all-new Mazda3 TCR race car.

The Mazda3 TCR will hit the race­ track as part of the 2020 IMSA Miche­ lin Pilot Challenge, beginning with the four­hour En­ durance Challenge that is part of the Rolex 24 at Daytona weekend of racing on January 26, 2020.

By retaining the striking de­ sign of the 2019 Mazda3 hatch­

back, the Mazda3 TCR features the latest iteration of the brand’s signa­ ture Kodo ­ Soul of Motion design lan­ guage. Envisioned within the walls of Mazda Design America in Irvine, Cali­ fornia, designers spent countless hours ensuring the aerodynamics of the Mazda3 TCR are compli­

ant with all TCR regulations, and flow seamlessly with the clean lines found on the Mazda3.

The Mazda3 TCR will be powered by a turbocharged, four­cylinder en­ gine producing 350 horsepower and will use a paddle­shifted six­speed transmission.

Developed and supported by Long Road Racing, the manufacturer of the Global Mazda MX­5 Cup car, the Maz­ da3 TCR is homologated to compete in any of the 36 TCR­sanctioned championships around the globe.

New infotainment system VOLVO CARS is fundamentally rethinking infotainment in the forthcoming fully electric Volvo XC40. Powered

by Android, the new infotainment system offers customers unp r e c e d e n t e d personalisation, improved levels of intuitiveness and new embedded Google technology and services.

Volvo Car Group is the first company to team up with Google on integrating an info­ tainment system powered by Android, with the Google As­ sistant, Google Maps and the Google Play Store built­in. The two companies have been de­ velopment partners for the past several years.

The new system offers full integration of Android Auto­ motive OS, Google’s open­ source Android platform, with real­time updates to services such as Google Maps, Google Assistant and automotive apps

created by the global develop­ er community.

The electric XC40 is also the first Volvo that will receive software and op­ erating system updates over the air, placing Vol­ vo Cars at the forefront of automotive connect­ ed services.

The fully electric XC40 will keep evolving and im­ proving over time, rather than it being at its peak when it leaves the factory.

This integration contributes to reducing driver distraction, helping drivers keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. The Google Assis­ tant also allows you to interact with your smart­home devices from your Volvo car.

Google Maps will be able to provide refreshed map and traffic data in real time, keep­ ing drivers informed about up­ coming traffic situations and

proactively suggesting alterna­ tive routes, as well as suggest­ ing the nearest charging sta­ tion en route.

This same rich and fresh map data will be used to im­ prove the capabilities of the XC40’s Advanced Driver Assis­ tance Systems (ADAS) by pro­ viding important information such as speed limits and curves in the road to the car.

Volvo Cars also continues to develop software and con­ nected services, using its growing force of software en­

gineers and its digital services platform Volvo On Call.

For example, the new info­ tainment system will be fully integrated with Volvo On Call, offering new features such as monitoring battery status and charging levels.

Volvo On Call classics such as pre­heating your car on a cold winter’s day, finding your car in a large parking lot, remote locking and unlocking and car sharing via a digital key are also included.

The fully electric XC40 was first shown to the public yes­ terday (Wednesday, October 16).

SPORT

IT was a terrible start for pole-sitter Vettel, who was immediately passed by Bottas.

Wing damage occurred for Leclerc after a tussle with Verstappen, who spun off the track.

Leclerc dropped into third but was staying on the track despite reporting damage to his team. It was an incredi­ ble opening to the race.

Leclerc was being encour­ aged to stay on and see how he goes. Bottas kept his lead from Vettel, Leclerc and Hamilton.

Hamilton was complaining of his vision being affected by the wing damage of Leclerc. The champ couldn’t believe the Ferrari driver wasn’t ordered off the track.

Leclerc went off to the pits eventually which pro­ moted Sainz to fourth. There was no investigation into the coming together between Verstappen and Leclerc, much to the former’s ranting on the radio.

The two Mercedes were clocking the quickest laps with Vettel in between them. Leclerc was up to

Bottas headed into the pits on lap 37. It was nice work by the team and he resurfaced back on track still in front of Vettel. Bottas was just under 10 secs behind Hamilton after the pit stop.

It was an error­strewn per­ formance from Wales, han­ dling the ball as if it was a roasting hot potato, rather than their best friend. Uruguay, by the way, had made over 200 tackles. It was a truly inspira­ tional performance from them despite the scoreline.
