IN the wake of the violent protests on the streets of Barcelona, residents of Mallorca took to the streets on Monday to show their solidarity and to protest the imprisonment of Catalan leaders for between nine and 13 years. Over 1,000 people stood in the rain in Plaza del Cort outside the town hall of Palma holding banners demanding ‘freedom of political prisoners’ and chanting. Although peaceful and not violent in any way, the protest attracted hordes of people and the police presence was noticeable in the area to maintain order and keep the peace. Banners were held aloft with slogans such as ‘There w o n ’t b e a c a g e f o r s o many birds,’ ‘Enough repression’ and the ‘Streets will always be ours’ amongst others. The protest went on for several hours with the rain doing nothing to deter the protesters’ indignation at the sentences passed for the Catalan leaders with yellow ribbons and a sea of yellow umbrellas as far as the eye
could see. Senator Vicenç Vidal of the group MÉS per Mallorca, the coordinator of the training Guillem Balboa, and the secretary of the Parl i a m e n t a r y Ta b l e , J o a n a Aina Campomar were among the protesters. The protest was staged against a Supreme Court ruling that sentenced nine separatist leaders to prison terms for the illegal secession attempt of 2017.
