The man’s female partner in crime was responsible for actually getting hold of the money, which according to police she managed through a network of accomplices.

They withdrew the money at ATMs and paid it into other current accounts, or sent it to the couple via money orders or online bank transfers.

Painstaking checks and comparisons of bank account holders, withdrawals from the accounts under scrutiny immediately following the victims’ deposits and withdrawals from numerous cashpoints across Spain led investigators to identify the suspected fraudsters.

Police said the pair typically preyed on middle-aged women who had gone through a series of failed romances or were widows, and who were hoping to find love online.

The couple has been remanded in custody by an Almeria court accused of fraud and money laundering.

SURPRISE!: Guardia officers discovered the man hidden among beans and peppers.

Plan goes pear shaped A NORTH African man’s attempt to sneak into Spain hidden amid beans and peppers went pear shaped when Guardia Civil officers spotted him poking out of boxes of veggies in the back of a lorry.

Officers came across the stowaway while inspecting vehicles disembarking from the Duba Bridge ferry.

Suspecting one of the lorries was carrying undeclared cargo, they took a closer look at what was loaded into the back. As they were shifting boxes of vegetables to see if there were other kinds of goods underneath they touched the man’s hands.

According to the Guardia he was suffering from exhaustion and dehydration.

The lorry driver was detained for a crime against the rights of foreign citizens.

DEEPLY GRATEFUL: “If it hadn’t been for them I would have bled to death from the neck,” the young man wrote in a letter to the Guardia Civil.

THE victim of a violent attack at a Nijar service station has credited the quick actions of local Guardia Civil officers with saving his life.

“If it hadn’t been for them I would have bled to death from the neck,” the young man wrote in a letter he sent to the municipal Guardia Civil chief.

It was a member of the public who alerted the Guardia there was a man lying on the ground at the San Isidro petrol station with a gash to his neck

which was bleeding profusely.

When the patrol arrived they found him in a pool of blood.

The officers grabbed a toilet roll, and while one of them kept pressure on the wound the other called out an emergency health team.

Seeing the victim was still losing a lot of blood they got a service station employee to get clean clothes to better cover the wound.

keep him calm. He told them someone he only knew by their first name had attacked him with a broken bottle after they got into an argument.

When the health team got there they told the officers their actions had saved the victim.

He spent five days in hospital recovering from his injury, for which he had to undergo an operation. Throughout that time the Guardia officers stayed in touch to check how he was getting on.

A MOTHER is under arrest for the death of her seven-year-old son.

Guardia Civil detained t he wom an i n t he Las Norias de Daza district of El Ejido after officers found the body of little Sergio in her car with apparent signs of strangulation, Spanish media reported.

A family member living in the area allegedly got a neighbour to alert the Guardia after the suspect drove to her home to ask for help.

The mother reportedly tried to drive off, but only got a few metres before a Guardia patrol vehicle blocked her path.

The 38-year-old had been engaged in a custody battle over Sergio with her ex-partner; just days before the child died a court awarded custody to the father, according to Spanish media.

The day after the arrest, the councils of Huercal de Almeria, where the woman lived with her son, El Ejido and Alcolea, where the parents originally come from, declared three days of official mourning.

This incredible scene is an annual spectacle in Madrid as thousands of sheep are led past the city hall in October.

THE festival celebrates the centuriesold tradition of seasonal livestock migration.

The 601st anniversary of the Fiesta de la Trashumancia is marked in the last week of this month, and involves a journey from Casa de Campo to Cibeles.

Conceived by the Association of Transhumance and Nature, it was designed to recognise and celebrate the tradition of seasonal livestock migration.

Since then, hordes of sheep (and

sometimes bulls and horses) take over the Spanish capital once a year. They stumble through the elegant streets of Madrid with their hoofs clattering on the asphalt.

A procession of people singing and dancing precedes them. Keeping the beat with castanets, women in mantillas, customary head coverings, and large, colourful skirts with aprons and men in wide pants tucked into long socks swirl around each other in a ‘jota,’ a traditional Spanish dance.

3 years for drugs

A JUDGE in Almeria has sentenced a man to three years and one day behind bars for illegally growing marihuana in his Roquetas de Mar home to sell.

A Guardia Civil search of L C’s property back in March led to the discovery of 89 marihuana plants with a dry weight of more than 8,000 kilos and 89 units of plant leaves along with a whole bunch of airconditioning units, lamps, ventilators, extractors and fertilizer.

According to the judge L C would have made getting on for €19,000 if he had sold the drug.

As well as the prison time, the judge imposed a €50,000 fine for committing a crime against public health. L C also faces a three-month €6 a day fine to compensate Endesa for an illegal hook up to the power supply and defrauding the electricity company out of just over €5,650.

The dancers wear wooden shoes on spikes, paying homage to the pastors who wear them to navigate muddy fields. Accompanied by the sounds of flutes and tambourines, the Madrid mayor greets the shepherds in front of City Hall.

When the 2,000 sheep appear on the square, the public spills onto the plaza.

The shepherds then pay the mayor 50 maravedís al millar - 50 coins per thousand heads - the payment established in 1418 for crossing the city.

Armed robbers

POLICE arrested three suspected robbers just after a failed attempt to hold up a 24-hour convenience store at gunpoint in Almeria City.

One of the men entered the store in the early hours of October 4, police said.

His face partly covered by a balaclava and carrying a 9mm calibre pistol, he demanded the shop assistant hand over the contents of the cash register.

When the shop worker pressed the alarm button he fled, jumping into a vehicle in which two accomplices were waiting.

National and Local Police patrols located the vehicle and the robbers in a nearby street a short time later.

Officers found the gun, cartidges, a balaclava and a black cap hidden under one of the car seats.

The police said they believed the trio were also connected to a frustrated robbery from a lottery outlet in Almeria the previous day.

TWO brothers are under arrest for mugging a young man at knifepoint in Almeria City.

Police reported the victim was making his way home along the Avenida del Mediterraneo one night at the end of September when the pair approached him.

One of the attackers pulled out a knife.

They told the youngster to hand over anything of value he had on him, like a mobile, jeweller y or cash.

When he refused the brother holding the knife pushed it into the victim’s leg.

The muggers got away with €200.

Their victim needed urgent medical attention for the injury.

Police said their investigations and the description provided by the victim led to the arrest of the 23 and 18-year-old brothers.

Consensus for fire service president THE Levante Firefighting and Rescue Consortium has reappointed Mojacar mayor Rosa Maria Cano as its president.

The Mojacar Council leader continues in the post she has held since 2015 with the unanimous backing of all the political forces represented. Bedar mayor Angel Collado is vice-president.

The consortium is made up of 13 member municipalities: Antas, Bedar, Carboneras, Los Gallardos, Garrucha, Huercal-Overa, M o j a c a r, S o r b a s , Tu r r e , Cuevas del Almanzora, Pulpi, Taberno and Vera.

There is also a Diputacion de Almeria representative, currently the Public Works deputy Oscar Liria.

Cano thanked the representatives for selecting her once more for her position in a service which is “essential for the member towns and for those which it covers in the Levante and the Almanzora areas,” and on the collaboration of the

A fire station has opened in Huercal-Overa and the Albox team has started operating.

T h e c o n s o r t i u m ’s f r e s h challenges include incorporating more firefighters, the reconstruction of the Albox fire station, which will include a firefighters’ training area, and additional work at the Huercal-Overa station.

So far this year there have been more than 430 call outs to the service.

Youth pivotal to fighting depopulation YOUNG people are pivotal to preventing the loss of population from the province’s rural areas and villages, according to the provincial government.

Last week the Diputacion unveiled the ‘Almeria, Youth Employment against Depopulation’ project.

The initiative will see €1.5 million allocated to the creation of businesses and the development of self-employment among 1629-year-olds in 85 provincial municipalities with less than 5,000 inhabitants.

The project, which is co-financed by European Social Funds, will provide participants with training aimed at preparing them for launching their business ideas, including setting up a website, setting out a marketing

Serial thief under arrest RECOGNITION: The council presented awards in recognition of service, bravery and for doing an excellent job.

Thanks for job well done HUERCAL-OVERA has thanked the municipality’s Local Police and Guardia Civil and Levante firefighters for their good work.

Following a mass to mark the celebration of the day of the police’s patron saints, Mayor Francisca Lourdes Fernandez and Local Police chief Cristobal Artero presented several awards.

Guardia Civil lieutenant Jose Manuel Bermudez was recognised for his coordination of the municipal security forces.

The council recognised the Levante firefighting service for its protection of local residents and for its collaboration with the Local Police team.

There was also an award for Jose Benitez for what the local authority stressed was the “bravery” he showed in helping police, Guardia Civil and firefighters rescue a person trapped by flooding in their vehicle on the A-350 during the torrential rains in the early hours of September 13.

“Without thinking twice about the risk he was running, and driven only by saving the life of a person who was trapped, he made up part of the rescue team,” the council said.

The mayor took the opportunity to highlight “the well-deserved homage and fair recognition” of the Local Police force “for being the true promoters of democratic values based on respect for the law and regulations on coexistence.”

CELEBRATIONS: The traditional lunch party has been held now for a number of years.

Seniors celebrate patron saint in Mojacar SENIOR citizens showed they are young at heart with hours of dancing to celebrate the feast of their patron saint.

One of the final events organised by Mojacar Council in honour of the Virgen del Rosario was a meal for the town’s senior residents.

This traditional lunch party has been held now for a number of years and 140 guests were treated to a lunchtime meal with dancing at the Puntazo Hotel.

They were joined by the mayor, Rosa María Cano, t h e 3 r d A g e C o u n c i l l o r, Ana García, and Citizen Securitycouncillor, María Luisa Pérez, along with the local Parish Priest,

Miguel José Esteban Jerez.

Anyone who is 65 and registered on the Mojacar Padron can apply for a ticket and every year more people, including numerous nationalities, attend.

The British community particularly takes part in many of the activities inc l u d i n g E d n a T h i r l a w a y, o n e o f M o j a c a r ’s m o s t well-loved veterans.

At 94 years of age Edna maintains her zest for Spanish life, still joining i n w i t h t h e c o u n c i l ’s s e nior exercise classes.

The lunch was followed by hours of dancing with live music, with the seniors showing off their fitness and enthusiasm for a party, regardless of age or nationality.

A raffle was also held with prizes contributed by

many local businesses to add to the three large hams given by the council.

Ana García, stressed how important these happy events are in getting people together to enjoy each other ’s company, complementing the council’s other work to help and support the town’s seniors.

The mayor also added how the needs of this older sector of the town are a high priority for her government team, with every possible effort made to meet their needs and provide the best quality of life a n d s e l f - s u ff i c i e n c y t h a t today’s society can offer.

Councillor Garcia said: “It is a party that is given with a great deal of affection and, every effort is made to make it a full and fun day for everyone.”

ALMERIA Council is backing a campaign to raise awareness about recycling electrical and electronic items.

Speaking at last week’s presentation of the second ‘Dona Vida al Planeta’ (Donate life to the Planet) campaign at an Almeria hypermarket, the city’s Municipal Services councillor Sacremento Sanchez urged Almeria residents to collaborate.

Aid for weather damaged farms MORE than 200 farms damaged by mid-September’s extreme weather are in line for Andalucia regional government assistance.

Speaking at a meeting last week with the mayors of 42 provincial municipalities which were battered by the torrential rains, Junta de Andalucia Agriculture, Fishing and Sustainable Development regional minister Carmen Crespo explained her department had identified 209 agricultural estates, most of them properties with greenhouses, considered to have suffered particularly bad damage and which could receive financial aid under the administration’s Agriculture Repair Plan.

Of these, the regional minister said, 126 had already been visited by expert staff from the ministry.

Crespo told the council heads she recognised that Almeria had been the area of Andalucia worst hit by the so-called cold snap, and would be the province receiving the highest amount of Junta assistance.

She talked too about the need to start a national debate in order to make it easier for farmers to get production and infrastructure insurance to cover situations stemming from extreme weather.

The regional minister also took the opportunity to comment on the effects of Brexit and the threat of US trade tariffs. The Andalucia countryside should not have to ‘always take the rap’ for trade wars, she complained.

Firm commitment to recycling “Recycling is a matter which is our responsibility and which affects us all,” the councillor commented, also underlining what she said was the council’s “firm commitment” to sustainability and the environment.

The recycling campaign is pro-

moted by RAEE Andalucia, and aims principally to develop and raise awareness about the correction management of domestic and industrial electrical and electronic apparatus waste in the region and the benefits of this for the planet.

The idea is to ultimately eliminate the dumping of these kinds of items in rubbish tips and increase selective disposal which respects the environment.

The campaign is also about encouraging the public to give electronic and

electrical items a second life.

RAEE Andalucia has the backing of the Junta de Andalucia’s Agriculture, Fishing and Sustainable Development regional ministry and the Andalucia Federation of Municipalities and Provinces.

MORE than 300 Erasmus students of 50 different nationalities celebrated the start of their studies this year at the University of Almeria with a fun integration week in the Cabo de Gata Natural Park.

Population downs and ups NEARLY two-thirds of Almeria’s municipalities lost population last year, figures from the National Institute of Statistics reveal.

El Ejido tops the list of the 63 provincial municipalities where the number of residents fell between January 2018 and the beginning of this year, with a drop of 3,386.

Carboneras was second, with 80 less, followed by Sorbas (-74), Fines (-56), and Alcontar (-49).

By contrast, Roquetas de Mar gained 1,562 registered residents over the 12 months, putting total population at 94,925.

Resident numbers in Almeria City increased by 1,462, by 1,126 in Nijar, 477 in Pulpi and by 309 in Vera.

Rail line moves forward THE Public Works Ministry has announced another step forward on the Murcia-Almeria stretch of the Mediterranean Corridor high-speed rail link.

The ministry’s ADIF Rail Infrastructure Administrator has put out to tender a contract for nearly €19 million worth of construction materials for interoperable rail track points.

Just over €10 million is for the supply and transport of ballast-less, or slab points, and just short of €8.6 million relates to track ballast points.

The contract includes the manufacture, pre-assembly and workshop checks on the rail infrastructure, as well as the transport and full pre-assembly, a statement from ADIF said.

It also includes consultancy during the transfer, laying, levelling and alignment of the track.

The statement explained that the railway points, or ‘needle changes,’ allow for forks in lines.

The statement also repeated that the high-speed rail line is cofinanced by the EU’s European Regional Development Fund.

Scuba diving paradise der water Adventure, which the Diputacion said promotes the province as a paradise for scuba diving enthusiasts thanks to the rich diversity and beauty of its marine life.

Staged over a weekend in Aguadulce, San Jose, Carboneras, San Juan de los Terreros, Las Negras and La Isleta del Moro, the sport tourism initiative featured guided dives for experienced divers and for beginners. A REPORT in the Mail on Sunday says that many Conservative MPs and ministers are up in arms against EU Commissioner Michel Barnier after he made it clear that in his opinion UK government changes to the proposed deal were insufficient.

He doesn’t believe that the Irish backstop alternative is sufficient to gain support from the 27 member states but rather than finalise negotiations last Monday, the EU was prepared to allow talks to continue until the eve of the Thursday summit in the hopes that a compromise could be found.

As time ticked away it also has to be remembered that any new deal has to be translated into all of the languages of each member state and should also be reviewed by legal teams to ensure that the wording is in accordance with the law in each country.

Quo Vadis Brexit?

Prime Minister Johnson appeared slightly closer to getting a Brexit deal to put before Parliament at the special next Saturday sitting as he has made some concessions on the Northern Ireland ‘back stop’ as well as removing the concept of a veto from Ulster politicians in Stormont, although he wants to keep it as a future possibility.

Should he refuse to do so and go ahead with a no-deal departure against the express contents of the ‘Benn Law’ then the whole process of British democracy could be set back on its heels.

The EU negotiators have accepted that there has been a softening of the government position on Northern

Ireland, but it may well be insufficient for them to agree to the latest proposed deal and the fact that the government does not have a majority certainly strengthens the EU hand.

What no-one can predict is what would happen if the EU decided not to allow a further extension and although many consider this is

extremely unlikely, it is one of a number of possible scenarios.

The Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn continues to oppose the concept of a General Election at this stage although it now seems more likely that he would acquiesce if and when an additional extension is applied for and agreed.

MOJACAR Bowls Club played host to a visiting Scottish team which made quite an impression.

Some 40 bowlers from the Corstorphine team in Edinburgh made a distinctly spectacular entrance at the club with a piper leading the way as they marched from their hotel to the Mojacar Playa green.

It was, the host club’s Alan Bramble said, “a truly stirring moment not seen or heard before here in Mojacar.”

Prior to the bowls match there was a ‘spider,’ where all the competitors did their best to cast their bowl at a target in the middle of the bowls green. The player who got their bowl the nearest was rewarded with a bottle of Tamnavulin single malt scotch whisky, a prize which had everyone’s minds fully focused, Alan joked.

THE future of the Endesa Litoral coal-fired thermal power plant in Carboneras is up in the air.

The Ministry for Ecologicial Transition (MITECO) has held what it said was the first round of contacts between public administrations, trade unions and the company following reports that Endesa was considering the way forward for the plant due to a lack competitiveness.

Acting Ecological Transition Minister Teresa Ribera met recently with Junta de Andalucia Finance, Industry and Energy regional minister Juan Bravo, Carboneras mayor Jose Luis Amerigo, and representatives of the plant workers’ unions to look in detail at the company’s plans for the Litoral.

A MITECO statement said the ministry had opened “a permanent line of communication with workers and residents to together examine all the possible future scenarios, to offer short-term solutions and to plan head subsequent actions in the area.”

The ministry also underlined the need for the national government, the Andalucia regional administration and Carboneras Council to work in a coordinated way in implementing measures.

Commenting after the two and a half hour meeting, Juan Bravo told press he was confident that the three administrations and plant workers could by working together turn the Carboneras plant around so that it was “viable” with a “definitive solution,” maintaining the industrial activity within the framework of environmental and energy regulations.

The regional minister made it clear Endesa is not going to close the plant for the moment, but is proposing a “reassessment of the situation.”

The Litoral plant employs some 400 workers. According to Spanish press around €250 million have been invested in the plant in recent years so that it complies with EU directives.

A Local Police patrol went in search of the griffon vulture after a passing driver reported they had spotted the bird close to an industrial estate on the Almajalejo road at the level of the A7 highway bridge to the Carretera de Nieva.

Capturing the creature was no easy task. As soon as the vulture realised the officers were there it flew onto the highway’s central reservation and then hopped onto the busy Almeria City-bound lane, putting itself, the officers and drivers at risk.

Veggies main promotion ingredient VEGETABLES are the main ingredient in Almeria City’s promotional activities this month.

Taking the fact the province is a major exporter of veggies like tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers to all over Europe, the city council has organised a selection of more than 50 vegetable themed events.

Among the highlights in the second half of October is a first for Spain: a festival of vegan-themed amateur short films. The festival is billed as a way of showcasing ‘a different perspective on true respect for animals, the environment and health and creating awareness in society about the need to protect our planet and natural resources, of defending animal rights and of promoting a 100 per cent vegetable diet as a conscious alternative to what is around us.’

The festival also aims to provide a platform for the work of up-and-coming youngsters and professionals in the audiovisual field.

As well as the short film competition and screenings, complementary events on at the Municipal School of Music and Arts on October 26 will include photography, video, acting, set design and creativity workshops, music, theatre, dance and cooking demonstrations.

There will also be several events at the Central Market, which from next year will be the base for the council’s gastronomy-themed promotion activities. On October 23 there is an ‘Ode to tomatoes: colours, textures and benefits,’ and on October 30 there will be ‘The union of music and gastronomy’ with the Almeria City orchestra.

City Promotion councillor Carlos Sanchez said the monthlong focus on vegetables was part of the council’s aim to put Almeria on the national map as a gastro-tourism destination.

The Mojacar branch of the RBL reported that regulars at Simon’s Bar hold quizzes, raffles and card bingo to raise funds for good causes. The cash collected is held until the end of the year when the regulars get together and choose several charities to benefit from the money.

Earlier this month Simon’s Bar invited Mojacar RBL to take part in one of their entertaining quizzes with quiz master Brian Roberts, and which was organised by Andrew Eaves.

Poetry please THE Valparaiso Foundation in Mojacar has announced the 21st Paul Beckett poetry award.

A jury made up of leading figures from the literary world will decide which original, unpublished book or collection of poems merits the €4,000 prize.

The subject is open, with a minimum of 500 verses and a maximum of 700. The closing date for entries is December 20 and the winner will be announced in February.

The winning work will be edited for the specially created ‘Beatrice’ collection within one year. After that time, the author will be free to publish their work, with an acknowledgment of the distinction given.

Entries must be submitted under a pseudonym and labelled ‘Para el premio de Poesia Paul Beckett,’ accompanied by the author’s personal data in a separate sealed envelope and sent to the Valparaiso Foundation at Calle Miguel Angel 1 in Madrid.

In addition, the foundation is collaborating with the local authority on the ‘Mojacar la Vieja’ archaeological excavations being carried out by the University of Granada as a project of great cultural and tourism importance for Mojacar and the province.

ADRA has become the first municipality in Almeria with an official dog-friendly beach.

It is permitted to take pooches onto the Playa de la Rana thanks to the authorisation of the Junta de A n d a l u c i a ’s A g r i c u l t u r e , Fishing and Sustainable Development territorial delegation.

The local council now

has all the pertinent permissions for installing the necessary signs and equipment on the 3,400 sqm beach so that dog owners and their canine companions can fully enjoy the area.

Adra Beaches and Animal Protection councillor Elisa Fernandez described the news as “much hoped for and positive for Adra.”

Allowing pet owners to

freely take their dogs onto a beach is “a move forward for our town and something which local residents had been asking for,” the councillor maintained.

She also said she believed it would encourage more tourists to visit the Adra coast.

Playa de la Rana is only the 10th beach in Andalucia t o g e t t h e o ff i c i a l d o g friendly designation.

LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics.

In Spain there are in effect two groups which most people would understand as being ‘the police.’ The National Police (Policía Nacional) who have jurisdiction in the towns and cities and the Guardia Civil outside the towns and cities. The Local Police are employed by town halls; they basically deal with property found, and enforce local laws.

Whilst they have a power of arrest, when exercised they must take the arrested person to the National Police or Guardia Civil according to where the crime took place.

National Police and the Guardia Civil deal with all crimes, missing persons etc in their jurisdiction. The National Police also deal with all applications for immigration paperwork, NIEs, EU Citizens Registration and for non EU nationals, Residencia, etc.

The 24 hours national emergency numbers for Spanish speakers are: 091 - police, 061 health emergencies 080 - firefighters.

By calling 902 102 112, but only when the perpetrator is unknown, one can give details of certain crimes, including:- burglaries, car theft, theft or loss of documents or belongings. The service is available in English from 9am to 9pm seven days a week, and from 9am to 3pm in French, German and Italian. Having given details of the crime, you must go to the National Police station which you nominate, within 48 hours to make the report using the information supplied on the telephone. In the case of robbery, where threat or force has been used, victims should call 112 at the time for police attendance, or go directly to the police station which covers that area to make a report.

Bull nails matador A BULLFIGHTER is in very serious condition after a bull fought back and fired his horns into the groin and thigh of the fighter.

Bullfighter Gonzalo Caballero, aged 27, was involved at a bullfight at the Las Ventas bullring in Madrid, a so-called tournament in action to celebrate national Hispanic Day, when the bull fought back strongly and the fighter suffered serious injuries.

Big city mayors take home top salaries THE mayors of Spain’s biggest cities top the rankings for council earnings.

The city authority heads of Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao and Valencia take home €103,667, €99,999, €92,911 and €85,602

respectively, according to Territorial Policy Ministry figures.

At the other end of the scale are the mayors of Colunga in Asturias, Marchamalo in Guadalajara and San Martín and Mudrian in Segovia, with salaries of

€6,059, €4,623 and €929 a year.

The ministry figures are based on information from the municipalities, provincial governments and civil servants. They cover 4,063 municipalities: 1,100 did

not come forth with salary details, including Granada, Tarragona, Jerez de la Frontera and Calvia in Mallorca.

Nowhere in Navarra provided information.

In all, 2,620 mayors claimed they receive no payment for their work. Of those who do declare income from their municipalities, 1,515 said their only jobs are their position with their town halls.

The average salaries of the heads of provincial capital councils are somewhere between €55,000 and €70,000.

A total of 1,900 mayors are paid less than €20,000 a year.

Campaign detects child seat lawbreakers A TRAFFIC safety campaign focusing on seatbelt use led to the detection of 232 cases of children travelling in vehicles without any kind of child restraint system.

In 63 of the cases the child was sitting in the front seat.

Guardia Civil officers checked more than 400,000 vehicles in Spain’s roads during the week-long General Directorate of Traffic campaign. They detect-

ed 3,768 adults travelling without buckling up.

Nearly 75 per cent of the adults who were not using seatbelts were travelling on ordinary roads, on which eight out of 10 traffic accident deaths in Spain occur.

Seat belt use is obligatory for all vehicle occupants and on all types of roads in Spain.

Traffic regulations demand that child

Counterfeit toys seized IT would appear that criminals are getting ready for Christmas early. Police have just seized 65,000 counterfeit toys with a market value of more than €372,000.

The toys, which police say were packed and ready to be shipped throughout Spain, lacked the relevant child safety

controls, putting children at risk. Officers of the National Police and officials of the Tax Agency, seized the fake toys at an industrial warehouse in Fuenlabrada (Madrid).

The investigation started when tax officials received international information on possible imports of counterfeit toys. In particular, they detected a consignment from the UK

As a result of the operation, officers arrested a woman as the alleged perpetrator of a crime against industrial property.

Maritime drugs bust A PLEASURE craft carrying cocaine from Brazil to Spain has been intercepted.

Five people have been arrested for drugs trafficking after being stopped trying to bring more than half a ton of cocaine and other narcotic substances into Spain. The drugs were stowed in secret compartments on the Dutch-owned vessel registered under the name Imagine.The operation involved the Guardia Civil, National Police and the Tax Agency, in cooperation with the Netherlands Police, the Estonian Police and the Portuguese Judicial Police.

The investigation began in Barcelona and followed the gang during 2018 through Valencia, Huelva, Granada and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The Netherlands-based gang were tracked for two years while they planned their operation.

In May 2018, the gang set off from the port of Valencia aboard the vessel Imagine and began their journey to Rio de Janeiro and Itajaí in Brazil returning to the Portuguese Azores where they were intercepted at the request of Spain and the Netherlands.

In July 2019 the coordinated international police operation was launched resulting in the arrest so far of five people of Estonian, British and Dutch nationality. As well as drugs, the police uncovered a firearm with the serial number erased, as well as cash.

Twitter pays less tax IN a fresh example of tax avoidance in multi billion dollar companies, annual accounts have revealed that the Spanish affiliate of Tw i t t e r p a y s l e s s i n corporate tax than it spends on one worker’s salary annually.

According to the figures issued to Spain’s Company Registry, Twitter Spain paid only €113,131 in company taxes in 2018, and registered an annual profit of just €221,038, 13.9 per cent on the previous year with rev-

enues of €4.5 million.

The figures the company have revealed are only representative of the income made from the marketing, advertising and business-development services it provides to the Irish branch of Twitter.

The company actually made a great amount more in profits but it transferred the majority of its revenue to Ireland where Twitter, along with other multinational companies such as Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Apple, make use of the 12

per cent business tax rate.

Ireland holds the largest share of the US company’s business in Europe, which allows the Spanish division of the company to transfer the money without ringing alarm bells.

The total tax paid by Twitter Spain in 2018 which was reported at €113,131, is €20,000 less than the average wage of one of its 19 workers which sits at €131,578 before taxes, including social security contributions and other employee costs.

Rent aid for flood victims HALF-A-MILLION EUROS has been set aside to help those left destitute following recent floods.

The regional government has allocated €500,000 to help those made homeless by the recent floods pay their rent.

Subsidies of between €420 and €490 per month were approved at a plenary session last Friday and are intended for residents of the Vega Baja and Vall d’Albaida.

An assessment of the general state of housing was made in the two weeks following the storm, with some properties declared uninhabitable and irreparable.

This situation has forced large numbers of people to leave their homes permanently. Therefore, the Generalitat has allocated half-a-million euros of its own funds, with the aim of enabling them to find ‘dignified’ alternative accommodation.

Only one application for aid per dwelling may be submitted. The documentation must be presented in the post-emergency coordination offices or in local town halls, preferably where the home is located.

At the same time, the regional government has approved aid for another 16 municipalities, with a total of €10 million set aside for urgent work.

CHARITY WALK: An estimated €7,500 was raised for ASDICA by people taking part in a fundraising walk at Finca Galatzo on Sunday.

Charitable steps

THREE HUNDRED children and adults participated in a fundraising walk at Finca Galatzo in Calvia on Sunday.

After completing the walk, the participants were invited to a barbecue and paella at Sa Vinya in Es Capdella where they were entertained by singers Izzy Newman and Brooke Judkins.

Initial figures suggest that the walk, organised by the International Rotary Club, has raised more than €7,500 for ASDICA, a local association which supports young people with disabilities. The walk is an annual event organised by the club.

President Ralf Jansen expressed his thanks to the Council for Sports and Tourism, the staff at Finca Galatzo and the IFOC guides, the town hall of Calvia, Foundation Handisport, Generali, the 41 Club and Sa Vinya Restaurant for their ongoing support.

The recipients were Relatives of Alzheimer Patients of La Axarquia (AFADAX) to the Association for the Protection of the Mentally Handicapped of Velez-Malaga (ASPROVELEZ) and the Association of the Handicapped of Velez-Malaga (AMIVEL).

Mayor, Antonio Moreno Ferrer thanked the University of Malaga for its involvement and collaboration in the joint organisation of many cultural and educational projects in the city as well as praising the work of the organisations which provide such a sterling service across the region.

“One of the objectives that we have is to attract Velez-Malaga training projects that improve the employability of our residents and continue to establish Velez-Malaga as a town of culture,” said the mayor.

The courses, which took place across the summer, reinforced the town as a hub of social affairs, culture, music and sport throughout Axarquia.

ALFAZ is preparing for the 22nd edition of International Day on October 27.

T h e I n t e r n a t i o n a l D a y, a f i r s t f o r t h e area, was created to celebrate something that Alfaz in fact celebrates 365 days of the year, thanks to its multicultural society.

This year’s edition differs from those of previous years because for the first time it will be held in Plaza Juan Carlos I in front of the Casa de Cultura instead of the Polideportivo municipal sports complex.

Sixty-four local groups and associations of all nationalities are taking part in the event, an increase of 14 on last year.

The day will begin at 10.30am, with the official inauguration at 11am and continuing until 5pm with representatives from the different groups introducing members of the public to their countries’ cuisine, music, dances and folklore.

Martine Mertens, Alfaz’s councillor for Residents of other Nationalities also asked as many of the participants and visitors to the events to come in their national costumes to add still more colour to an already colourful day.

YOUNGSTERS at Marbella’s Costa del Sol hospital now have two electric cars to drive themselves to tests and operations in.

The idea is to help children overcome fear, stress and boredom in a difficult time.

The cars have been donated by the charity Golfriends Puma Volkswagen, with charity organiser Carlos Coronil thinking up the idea.

The Paediatric ward received the cars t h i s w e e k , w i t h t h e d e p a r t m e n t ’s h e a d nurse saying that it is a positive move which will help children settle into what can be a daunting environment.

The cash to buy the cars came from a monthly golf tournament organised by Carlos for the past five years.

As well as helping the hospital, associations and other charities have also benefited.

It may be a little while before the children drive to operations as the nursing staff want to see how other hospitals in Spain organise similar initiatives.

In the meantime, children will be free to enjoy themselves by driving round the ward.

Irresistible Almeria

ALMERIA wants to keep up the momentum of the city’s 2019 national gastronomy capital status.

With a view to seeing the provincial capital widely recognised as a top ‘foodie’ tourist destination, the city council has devised a fresh marketing strategy for next year.

Speaking at the inauguration of the fourth ‘Almeria beyond 2019 Ideas Forum, city mayor Ramon Fernandez-Pacheco unveiled a new slogan for 2020: ‘Almeria Ciudad Gastronomica. Para comersela,’ translating more or less as ‘Almeria Gastronomy City. Irresistible.’

The council leader revealed there will be a new headquarters in the city’s central market for activities promoting cuisine. Also on the agenda is an annual gastronomy congress, which promises to bring together top professionals and the best of national cooking.

Further plans to appeal to the gastro tourism market include creating a sticker to go on all products exported from Almeria, a network of gastro cities and a map of local dishes.

In addition, linking heritage and cuisine and strengthening the connection between health and diet under the slogan ‘Almeria puerta de dieta mediterranea,’ or Almeria gateway to the Mediterranean diet.

BUSINESS School ESADE is to create the Centre for Economic Policy and Political Economy in Madrid which will propose far­ reaching economic reforms for Spain and facilitate the general consensus necessary to make such reforms happen.

The centre aims to identify what needs to be done to allow for the Spanish economy to flourish and spread wealth widely especially in what could be difficult times following Brex­ it, US tariffs and a potential de­ cline in British tourism.

THE Spanish company Meliá Hotels International has just been named the most sustainable hotel compa­ ny in the world in the annual Cor­ porate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) by the Zurich­based Robe­ coSAM AG Group.

The CSA is an annual evaluation of the sustainability practices of more than 4,700 companies in all sectors, focused on economic, so­ cial and environmental criteria, as well as industry specific standards.

Meliá participated in this evalua­ tion last year, obtaining the third best score in its sector and this year, the Spanish hotel group has

LEGALLY SPEAKING Who maintains terraces?

Are community terraces the whole responsi­ bility of the community? The terraces accord­ ing to the original builder are the responsibility of the community, but several of the houses have a shared terrace and others have their own small terrace area.

I believe the community is only responsible for the tiled roof area, but not the terrace walls. Several of the owners have paid for maintenance of the terrace area out of their own pockets, but other owners claim the community should pay.

T H (Costa Blanca) Communi­ ty terraces are regulated by the YOU AND THE Law of Horizontal LAW IN SPAIN Property which es­ tablishes that private property, such as flats, includes only what is enclosed by the outside wall of the building. Any­ thing outside the walls, such as terraces or garden plots, is community property. However, ‘exclusive use’ is usually as­ signed to the individual owners and Spanish courts have usually ruled that ordinary maintenance is their responsibili­ ty. From your description I gather that your community has semi­detached houses and some partially roofed terraces, which complicates the issue. It would be a good idea to clarify this at the next AGM.

Tarnished jewellery THE Links of London jewellery and luxury gift brand was found­ ed in 1990 and spread across the UK and had stockists in Gibraltar, Hong Kong, Madrid and Tokyo as well as Canada and the USA. In 2006 it was sold to a Greek company, and they have now called in Administrators.

Thomas Cook reprieve THERE was a piece of good news for those staff made redundant following the collapse of the Thomas Cook holiday empire as an independent travel agent has taken over all of their high street shops.

Hays Travel was formed in 1980 by John Hays and his wife Irene and expanded in the north of England before becoming a major name in high street travel agencies reaching a turnover last year

of £1 billion (€1.1 billion). They have now pur­ chased all 555 Thomas Cook shops for an undis­ closed amount and are looking to re­employ the 2,500 knowledgeable work force who used to man those stores.

The couple believe there is still a strong market for low cost package tours and this acquisition will cement their place as the largest high street travel agent in the UK and generate significant income.

New £20 notes design

By John Smith THE Bank of England has an­ nounced that it will be issuing a new £20 note produced in poly­ mer featuring the artist JMW Turner on February 20 next year.

Always alert to the fact that counterfeiting is a major problem, especially with the £20 denomina­ tion, the Bank said that this new note contains sophisticated secu­ rity features making it the most secure Bank of England banknote yet. For the first time, the note in­ corporates two windows and a

Winner, winner, chicken dinner A NEW piece of research from Mintel says that in the same way ‘middle class’ and more affluent shoppers have turned to Aldi and Lidl in the UK, they are also frequenting so-called ‘chicken shops.’

This means that despite financial problems for some food chains, British diners are set to spend £7.5 billion (€8.25 billion) on burgers and chicken in 2019.

Thirty-seven per cent of consumers are ordering home deliveries more often from burger and chicken

outlets than they did a year ago and this seems likely to increase.

One of the reasons given is consumers feel these outlets are now offering more healthy options than they did a year ago, which has encouraged them to increase their patronage and buy that more wholesome meal.

Ironically, those same restaurants and take-aways have seen a fall in spend from those who are less well off.

Flying high IAG the group which owns Aer Lingus, BA, Iberia and Vueling airlines is to invest more than €24 billion in order to improve the efficiency of its fleet by replacing 142 aircraft over the next five years with planes using less fuel.

Fair prices ACCORDING to Union estimates, some 30,000 olive growers descended on Madrid last week and protested outside the Ministry of Agriculture about the low price of the oil internally and additions of tariffs by the USA which affects their livelihood.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT ONE thing the Brits have never lacked is courage. World wars, the blitz, Roman invaders and a whole host of past adversaries, have always failed to quench the indomitable spirit of our great Island race.

Well I’m sorry to say that whole scenario is now changing. An enemy more deadly than all the opposing forces that have assailed us in the past now threatens to engulf our once great country and is slowly but surely eating us away from within. For the first time ever people are genuinely frightened.

Today’s adversaries are the bureaucrats; the MPs, the so­called leaders of the British people; men and women who were voted in­ to positions of power and trusted to protect and stand up for the British public and defend their rights and their heritage. The betrayal by these people is making UK citizens feel even more unsafe in their own country than they felt when the Nazi jackboot threatened them in the Second World War. At least at that time we were all in it together. The ene­ my was there for all to see, and the Brits knew who, and what they were fighting for.

I REST MY CASE: ‘Preacher’ comedian almost won the show! utterly baffled as to how they should react or even behave. I’ll give you an example. In my cabaret spot I do slip in a couple of extremely mild ‘racist’ jokes. As the act has never really changed (I know, I know!) I have seen the dif­ ferent reaction to these same gags from British audiences over many years.

At first the stories were generally met with

open guffaws of pretty innocuous merriment.

As the years went by reactions slowly altered.

These different phases went from full on laughter to somewhat derisive scoffing. We then moved on to laughter mixed with occa­ sional whoops of defiant communal assent.

The next phase involved rather more sub­ dued sniggers with people looking at each other

to see if their merriment was being shared. We have now hit rock bottom. What I see now is subdued embarrassment and actual fear on the audience faces as they furtively glance around to see if they could be involved in some type of ‘offence’ that could get them reprimanded or even arrested. And it’s not pretty.

The British spirit is being defeated by politi­ cal correctness ‘Uman rights advocators and the appeasers of minority groups to a point where they are utterly confused as to what is right and wrong and are actually in fear of re­ vealing their true feelings in public. And it’s all one way traffic.

An example of this was that awful black ‘preacher’ comedian who took part in the re­ cent BGT champions final. His whole act was racist. He spoke in an utterly derogatory way about having white girls out on a date and how black girls’ reactions were far more ‘with it’ and acceptable. If he had been a white co­ median talking about black women in the same way there would have been uproar from the luvvies that would probably have in­ volved legal proceedings. As it was he nearly won the show! I rest my case.

DEADLY WEAPON A RECENT Euro Weekly News piece report­ ed that distraction caused by mobile phones are responsible for an annual 390 deaths on Spanish roads.

Not surprising, not when we’re living in Spain, which I believe has one of Europe’s highest proportion of smartphone users.

I’m aware that people die on UK roads and elsewhere in the developed world be­ cause either they or someone else was paying more attention to their mobile than the road.

But it’s time to agree that a mobile can turn into a deadly weapon once it’s inside a car or, worse, a lorry.

Very often, though, in the small inland city where I live, you see a car pulled in at the kerb on a narrow road because the dri­ ver is talking on their mobile.

So, what is the usual reaction? Blaring horns from the cars behind because some­ one doesn’t want to break the law. Talk about inconsistent.

MAXIMUM working hours introduced this year in Spain are forcing employers to apply strict limits to the time staff are on duty.

Companies that cannot implement the new laws are being given time to negotiate with employees before any sanctions are imposed.

Businesses are now required to record staff start and finish times daily to make it clear what overtime people are working and breaks during the day which must not be more than nine hours.

Registration systems must guarantee the authenticity and integrity of the working times register and records must be kept for four years and made available to trade unions and the Labour and Social Security Inspectorate (LSSI) Workers’ pay is not affected by the rule, so the law shouldn’t cost businesses any more where they already reward staff for overtime.

So far, the LSSI hasn’t announced a cut-off date when noncompliant employers will start to face fines of up to €6,250.

There are no plans at present to follow up the ruling, so bosses are unlikely to have to worry unless employees raise the alarm over practices.

It’s difficult to imagine how the regulations will be policed as there is no planned follow-up and there is no stipulated system of recording hours.

Unless electronic recording is introduced across the board, which would involve businesses in additional expense - and could raise questions about employee privacy - then it’s unlikely the ruling will have any real value.

It was hot and the staff worked very hard to keep up with the de­ mand for cold drinks. The food was, as ever, delicious. Thanks to Ben and all the team.

MACS were extremely grateful when Paul Rawlins (founder of the All Skas) offered to MC the whole event.

His energy and professionalism kept things ticking along brilliantly.

At 1pm, Paul introduced firm favourite Lady Ellen to kick off the

event. Ellen sang songs from several decades, finishing off with a powerful performance of Skyfall, for which she received a standing ovation.

Stiff Upper Lip followed, perform­ ing a great mix of classic pop: the Beatles songs were a particular favourite of the crowd.

Louise Elizabeth Low sang a range of pop and soul songs, which were beautifully delivered, with everyone singing along with her until the very last song. The Memphis Rockers were next up. Their classic rock and roll tracks had the jivers up dancing from the start and those not dancing could be seen clapping and singing along.

Next saw the pairing of Tony Jus­ tice and Jack Law. Each performed a short solo spot and then sang a Swing set together for the very first time.

Judging from the reaction of the crowd, it won’t be their last time on stage together.

The All Skas were the final band of the day, singing songs mainly from the 80’s. Their energy, interaction with the crowd and fabulous ska mu­

sic had people smiling, singing and up on the dance floor from start to fin­ ish.

Thank you to the Macs Fundraising Team, the volunteers and to every­ one who donated prizes for the eight super raffle prizes. Congratulations to the lucky winners.

The Squares Board winner was Lin­ da Waldon. She won half of the prize money, which was €187 (not all the squares were sold), with MACS re­ ceiving the same amount. Well done Linda.

Retrain your appetite DECODING your ‘appetite pendulum’ can help you lose weight - without the need to diet.

This is according to psycholo­ gist Dr Helen McCarthy who be­ lieves we can retrain our ap­ petites and to recognise how much our food actually needs in order to shed the kilos.

The author told the Daily Mail that we have all been trained to eat at certain times of the day, rather than eating when we are hungry and stopping when we are full.

She claims the ‘appetite pen­ dulum’ starts at 0 when hunger is neutral, moves into minus when hungry and plus when we begin to eat.

And Dr McCarthy advised eat­ ing should only begin when hunger gets to minus three ­ definitely hungry ­ stressing the importance of stopping at plus three ­ just full.

The former NHS psychologist said many of us eat too much ei­ ther because we’re enjoying the food and don’t want to stop, or

we’re eating mindlessly.

She encourages clients not to give up any foods they love and devise their own meal plans rather than be dictated by a diet.

The weight loss psychologist, who is also training other pro­ fessionals in this way of think­ ing, says hunger signs aren’t a bad thing, pointing out that ‘mild hunger in the hour or so before your next meal or snack is healthy.’

She went on to say, “when you never feel mild hunger, your body may have been con­ tinuously digesting food, with no chance to stop and rest. Under­ stand­

ing and respecting mild hunger lets your gut

work in the way that it evolved.”

According to her research, “the hunger message to the brain is our body’s in­ built natural way of letting us know we’ve used up the energy

from our last meal, and that we’re having to switch over to using our stored energy, ie fat, so the hunger signals are switched off.

“We can go a whole day, or month or lifetime, without actu­ ally getting hungry ­ and it’s one of the biggest reasons we put on weight.”

Match fit BRITISH tennis star Katie Boulter is train­ ing hard with coaches in Spain after frac­ turing her spine, forcing her to pull out of the French Open.

The 23­year­old is preparing for a return to the game after a six­month recovery period when she will com­ pete in a tournament in Turkey.

Boulter has not been seen since she won victory at East London’s Copper Box in April, which put Great Britain back to the elite level in the Fed Cup. The promising star is now train­ ing in Spain with coach Jeremy Bates ahead of her scheduled comeback. She was one of the few female players with top 100 status. Her status has dropped to 260 in the world since her injury.

Crunchy crumb topped Persimmon and Apple tart I OFTEN speak to people who say they cannot bake. ‘Nothing ever comes out right when I bake’ is a regular comment.

Now I love to bake; cakes, pies, messing about with pastry and making up recipes is a hobby.

Whereas often a cake recipe is a recipe that you don’t want to fiddle about with, sometimes there is something that you can change, and this week is all about just that.

Having been given some persimmons by a neighbour, I had a look in various recipe books for ideas, but nothing re­ ally jumped out at me. I had lots of apples, not baking ap­ ples, just the usual red eating apples, and wondered if the persimmons and apples would work well together.

I had some filo pastry in the fridge and thought rather than making the usual pastry topped pie, what about some sort of crumble topping to make it a bit different.

I had a search through my overstocked baking cupboard and began to put together a few ingredients that I hoped might work together and they did! I had a bag of brown flour that I had picked up from a British supermarket which was supposed to be perfect for Malt loaf, so I decided to use that rather than the usual plain flour.

Along with sugar, nuts and some rolled oats, plus a good pinch of ground cinnamon, I got to work.

The result was a delicious sweet tart which when served with some vanilla ice cream made a fabulous dessert. If you haven’t got persimmons, just use apples. Here is what I did.

PS I needed a new battery for my scales, so used cups to measure, you can buy them for pennies from Chinese shops.

Ingredients Filo pastry ­ I used 5 sheets, but you could use shortcrust

DELICIOUS: A sweet tart which makes a fabulous dessert.

Filling 5 red eating apples ­ Peeled, cored and sliced (use a couple more if you only have apples) 4 persimmons ­ Remove skin and seeds and slice (mine were over­ripe so I just scooped out the flesh) ½ cup of brown sugar ½ cup of white granulated sugar Juice of a lemon ¼ teaspoon of ground cin­

namon Crumble Topping ½ cup of flour (I used brown but plain white will work fine) 100g of cold butter cut into small cubes ½ cup of brown sugar ½ cup of granulated sugar ½ cup of rolled oats ½ cup of walnuts smashed up a bit (almonds would work well also) ½ teaspoon of ground cin­ CREDIT: Ayuntamiento de Mojacar

Original talent MOJACAR’S La Fuente gallery is hosting an exhibition showcasing original paint­ ings, sculptures and pho­ tographs by two highly tal­ ented artists.

Vara Tartalo, who studied drawing, painting and sculp­ ture at Madrid’s Peña Art Academy, is showing 35 paintings. She has taken part in numerous individual and collective exhibitions, receiv­ ing many awards during her career.

Vara is inspired, she says, by her own free spirit, cap­ turing nature intuitively on the canvas and creating works which grab the atten­ tion, yet are full of sensitivity.

Retired engineer Pedro Barranco has returned to his love of art and the tuition he

received from his brother, a fine arts graduate, throwing himself into sculpture and photography.

He describes himself as an ‘enthusiastic amateur,’ but his work reveals both mas­ tery and knowledge. His 19 wire sculptures and 24 pho­ tos stand out for their beauty and originality.

Commenting at the exhibi­ tion opening, Mojacar Educa­ tion councillor Ana Garcia said she was impressed with the quality of the works. She pointed out the number of artists who are drawn to Mo­ jacar and find it a source of inspiration.

The exhibition runs until the end of the month, Tues­ day to Sunday from 10am to 1pm. Entrance is free.

In a large bowl, mix together all the filling ingredients and leave them to sit whilst you make the crumble topping mix­ ture. In a separate bowl add all the crumble topping ingredi­ ents, I put the walnuts in a plastic bag and whacked them with a rolling pin to break them up a bit before adding them to the other ingredients. Now get your hands in there and give it all a good rub together to work the butter through.

Brush the edges of the pas­ try with the beaten egg.

Bake for about 20 minutes at 200ºC and then reduce the temperature to 180ºC and bake for a further half an hour.

I sat my pie dish on a baking sheet in case it bubbled over whilst baking.

Leave to cool and set for about an hour before serving with cream or ice cream. Enjoy!

TOURIST ATTRACTION: Mayor Puri Sanchez said it was important for inland areas like Cantoria to offer visitors interesting walks.

THE Almanzora River and the old railway line mark the way on a new hiking route in Cantoria.

More than 80 walkers took part in the first hike along the Las Lomas track, which the lo­ cal council has now clearly marked out.

Setting out from the railway station, the group walked the entire 15­kilometre route, able to enjoy a different per­ spective of the municipality.

The Las Lomas, or PR­A 48, walk takes around five hours.

It goes past different farms and along various tracks, tak­ ing in views of Cantoria town, and passing by rural proper­

ORIA Council is aiming to put the municipality firmly on the provincial tourism map as a means of boosting the local economy and stemming depopulation.

As part of its tourism push, the municipality recently host­ ed its first ‘fam trip,’ welcom­ ing travel sector professionals for a courtesy tour so they could familiarise themselves with the area’s main attrac­ tions.

The council has since the be­ ginning of the year, and with the assistance of the region’s tourist sector companies, been putting together a catalogue of group visits, and the fam trip was designed as an opportuni­

Oria tourism push FAM TRIP: The tour aimed to give travel sector professionals the opportunity to discover Oria’s charms first-hand. could see the remnants of the 13th century Moorish fortifica­ tion, before being treated to a tasting of locally produced cold cuts.

There was a brief stop at the town hall, where Mayor Mar­ cos Reche thanked them for taking the time to get to know Oria, before the group were taken by bus to see a local egg farm.

They learned how the 4,000 eggs laid every day by the farm’s 6,000 hens are collect­ ed daily and the difference be­ tween free­range, organic and

regular eggs.

From here it was on to the Rambla de Oria to find out about wine production at a family­run winery. There was a chance to try two of the win­ ery’s reds, one barrel­aged for six months and one for 14, and one white.

Then it was back to Oria for a hearty lunch before an after­ noon of visits to the basilica and to a patisserie founded in 1857.

Six generations on the patis­ serie remains in the same fam­ ily’s hands, and the confection­

ers use the same traditional recipes to this day.

The council hopes this first fam trip will help to generate

visits by school groups and as­ sociations, at the same time as promoting the municipality and its food products.

Participants will gather at Bar Rosaleda near the Los Llanos market site in Arboleas at 10.30am for an 11am start, and meet there after the five­ kilometre walk for rest, recu­ peration and prize­giving.

Staged at Marina Golf, and coming just after the society marked its first year, the event attracted a large field. Despite the serious determination to win, the atmosphere was one of fun and more fun, which has become the society’s hallmark.

Dave Wright was champion on the day with 39 points. Sec­ ond place went to Bill Myers

with 36 points and Eddie Barnes was third on countback with 35.

The society was in celebrato­ ry mood the following night at its annual dinner dance held at the Puntazo hotel in Mojacar Playa. The many members and their guests danced the night away to the one and only Ash­ ley.

Held over the weekend of October 5 and 6, the event was a fantastic success for the host club.

Every club in the Federation of Andalucia Bowls area was represented, bringing to­ gether both experienced bowlers and com­ parative novices for what was a challeng­ ing tournament.

With such a varied entry there were bound to be some shocks along the way, none more so than in the second match for the defending champions from 2018, A Terry, J Sunderland and T Kent (Indalo BC), who went down to the youngsters from the Davis family: 18­year­old Alicia, Lydia, 16, and 11­year­old Luke, who currently plays for ALBC. The great sportsmen that they are Mr Terry and co were not in the least down­

hearted by their unexpected defeat, but in­ stead were full of praise for their young vic­ tors and congratulated them accordingly.

“It just goes to prove that bowls is a sport for all ages,” commented Bowling Club of Zurgena Secretary Keith Porter.

“It’s almost frightening to imagine how good these youngsters could become in the future, but it beggars the question how do we attract more young persons into the game we all love.”

The entrants for the competition, now in its third year, were split into two groups.

Each team having to play six matches of one hour duration, or seven ends.

It was Group B that provided both the winners, on 38 points, and the runners­up: Martin McLoughlin, Terry Lyons and Bryan Young (Zurgena BC on 34 points).

The best of the rest came from Group A. Finishing in third place was the team made up of Ian Mason, Roger Finch and Keith Porter (Zurgena BC, 33 points).
