THE woman found guilty of murdering eight-year-old Gabriel Cruz has got life.

On Monday the Almeria Provincial Court sentenced Ana Julia Quesada to a maximum permanent reviewable prison sentence for killing Gabriel in Cabo de Gata in February last year with the aggravating circumstance of a family relationship with the little boy.

Quesada is the first women to be sentenced to serving life with a possibility of parole after a minimum fixed term since the punishment was introduced into Spanish Law in 2015.

The court also sentenced the 45-year-old Dominican to three years behind bars for psychological injuries to Gabriel’s father Angel Cruz, with whom she was in a relationship at the time o f t h e y o u n g s t e r ’s d e a t h , and two years and nine months for psychological

She will also have to pay the just over €200,000 cost to the state of the 12-day search operation launched to find the little lad following his disappearance from close to his grandmother ’s house in Las Hortichuelas.

Last month a jury unanimously decided Quesada was guilty of ‘voluntarily taking the life’ of Gabriel, ‘unexpectedly and without the possibility of the minor defending himself or reacting’ following a nine-day trial and more than 24 hours of deliberations.

MORE than 2,000 people turned out for Vera’s first ever Latin American festival.

Vera Council described the colourful event staged last Saturday in the El Palmeral fairground as a union of the region’s cultures and an opportunity to discover the Latin American communities’ folklore, customs and art.

Intercultural Mediation, Innovation and Special Events councillor, Jose Maria Fernandez Cortes, said the council initiative also aimed “to make people who have come from our brother countries feel welcome in our municipality.”

The more than 20 live performances at the festival included Argentinian tango, Bolivian, Ecuadorian and Peruvian dance groups, Colombian merengue, bachata and cumbia, Mexican rancheras and Venezuelan urban beats.

NEWS EXTRA LGBT phobia MORE than 50 per cent of 12 to 18-year-olds in Almeria have witnessed incidents of homophobia or transphobia, according to a sur vey by Andalucia Diversity and Andalucia Observatory against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia.

On track ALMERIA Council has approved two new cycle track projects for the provincial capital. The investment of more than €270,000 will extend the city’s cycle track network to connect the El Puche and the Torrecardenas districts.

Bumper season MOJACAR has had another bumper summer.

The municipality’s main hotels said the peak holiday months were as good as or even better than last year’s ‘exceptional’ high tourist season, Mojacar Council reported following a meeting between the managers, Tourism councillor Emmanuel Agüero and the new director of the Marina de la Torre Golf Course.

Hotel occupation levels in August were close to 100 per cent and just over 90 per cent in July, according to the local authority.

The administration said a major British tour operator, with whom the town and province has an ongoing promotional agreement, had this year doubled the number of holidaymakers it brought to the region from

the UK and Ireland.

The council also commented that hotels were pleased many of this summer’s visitors were family groups.

“Increased numbers have seen Mojacar fare extremely well compared to other destinations, bringing economic stability despite the global tourism recession forecasts at the start of the year,” the local authority stated.

The council put Mojacar’s appeal down in great part to what it said were quality hotels, matched with a variety of sport and leisure options and council-organised entertainment.

Self-defence FORTY victims of gender-based violence took part in the fifth edition of a self-defence course run by the Almeria National Police. Police instructors taught the women how to protect themselves in different violent situations.

Fatal crash A MAN died in a traffic accident involving a car and a motorbike on the A-327 in Huercal-Overa just before 5.30pm on Friday afternoon, the 112 Andalucia emergency service reported on social media.

MORNING mist lies at the bottom of the El Tajo gorge that carves its way through the Spanish town, carrying the waters of the Rio Guadalevin, with the Puente Nuevo bridge spanning the 100m chasm below.

Ronda sits in the Malaga Province around 40 minutes north of Marbella, sandwiched between the Sierra de Grazalema and the Sierra de las Nievas, both UNESCO biosphere reserves.

THE Almeria City of Culture project design competition has a clear winner.

The jury unanimously chose the ‘El Palmeral’ proposal.

Almeria mayor and jury president Ramon FernandezPacheco stressed the “difficulty” of first whittling it down to the three finalists from among the 67 contender ideas and then choosing the best overall. He drew attention to the “imaginative solutions” featured in the winning proposal for remodelling the Maestro Padilla Auditorium, its enlargement with an adjacent building to house the Almeria City orchestra and the municipal band, and a completely new look for the surrounding area.

Jury member and highly respected architect Federico Soriano Pelaez, whose projects include the Malaga Municipal Auditorium, commented that the winning design fitted best with “the standards society demands on environmental sustainability” in architecture.

Economic divide

ALMERIA has an economic divide, an ASEMPAL business association report suggests.

The overview of the province’s business activity shows only 61 of the 103 municipalities have more than 30 companies. Of these, just 22 - all located on the coast, in the marble region, along the Albox-Huercal-Overa-Velez Rubio axis and in the city and biggest towns - have more than 300 companies.

Figures from 2018 show Antas is the municipality with the greatest concentration of companies, with a ratio of 126 per 1,000 inhabitants. Mojacar and Viator also have significant numbers of firms relative to population size, followed by Fines and Huercal de Almeria.

The municipalities with the lowest business density levels are Velefique, Bayarque and Urracal.

The National Institute of Statistics’ DIRCE Central Business Directory puts the total number of active companies in Almeria in 2018 at 42,931, more than 2,000 less than 10 years earlier.

SPORT and health come together in Vera later this month.

The fourth edition of the local council-organised event matching medicine with physical activities will this time focus particularly on cycling in all its forms, whether road, track or mountain.

Speaking at last week’s presentation, Vera mayor Jose Carmelo Jorge Blanco explained the event was coordinated by Dr Angel Rubio and would include presentations by experts in areas like nutrition and biomechanical medicine.

Also talking about their experiences will be top professional road cyclists and mountain bikers.

The events will be staged on the afternoon and evening of Friday October 25 in the Terraza Carmona.

The following day there will be a 17-kilometre cyclo-tourist trip setting off from the Vera bullring at 10.30am.

Participation is free.

Sport matched with health

HAPPINESS: The mayor said the festival poster design reflects the atmosphere of the celebrations.

Gearing up for festivities HUERCAL-OVERA is gearing up for its annual festival, one of most important in the region.

Last week the local council released details of this year ’s events and unveiled the official poster for the celebrations, which will run from October 16 to 21.

Local artist Antonio Rojas designed the poster, which Mayor Francisca Lourdes Fernandez said reflected “the happiness, love and effort” associated with the festivities.

Culture councillor Diego Ortega promised the festival programme featured events aimed at a broad cross-section of the public.

Among the highlights will be live music from local groups La Grama and La Nave del Coco and a perfor-

mance by musician Jaime Urrutia on the Thursday.

The following day there will be early evening entertainment with the musical The Lion King in the municipal marquee, followed later that night by performances by Locales Rizo and Arrumbao and Catalan singer Kiko Veneno.

On the Saturday there will be a midday procession of horses and carriages.

The big act that night will be heavy metal rockers Los Mojinos Escozios, followed by a grand firework display.

On Sunday night there will be a distinct change of tone, when Camela, a band credited with creating tecno-rumba, take to the stage at midnight.

The following night will be the turn of singer Helena Bianco to provide the entertainment.

The councillor also revealed Tuesday October 22 will be the Day of the Child, and from 5 to 8pm there will be no noise so that youngsters with autism and Asperger’s can fully enjoy the fun.

The mayor invited all local residents to enjoy and get into the swing of the celebrations.

“Together we can enjoy these days in the best mood, with a smile and with happiness,” she commented.

She also made a point of thanking all those behind the festival organisation and preparations for their efforts, as well as the Local Police and Guardia Civil for looking out for public safety.

Brutal attack arrest

A MAN is under arrest for a brutal attack on a Roquetas de Mar farmer in August.

The Guardia Civil said the detention on charges of attempted homicide was the result of a meticulous investigation launched after one of the victim’s family members reported the assault at a greenhouse in the El Parador area on August 8.

The attack left the farmer with serious injuries requiring surgery; at one point doctors put him in a medically induced coma.

The Guardia commented on the complexity of the investigation, not least because the victim was sedated for a few days while he was recovering in Almeria’s Torrecardenas hospital. Efforts focused on gathering information

year-old MOS in connection with the incident. It became clear that a distant relative he shared a home with was also involved, but had left some days earlier.

In the second phase the Guardia identified the missing relative as the attacker, 47-yearold Roquetas resident AK.

Record race NUMBERS THE upcoming La Desertica ultra endurance race has attracte d a re c o rd n u m b e r o f p a r t i c i pants.

The provincial government revealed 6,000 athletes have signed up to take part in the event, considered one of the toughest of its kind in Spain.

This is 500 more than last year. What’s more, the Diputacion de Almeria said, 70 per cent of those planning to take part come from outside the province.

Co-organised by the provincial administration, the Spanish Legion based in Viator and the councils which the course goes through, participants will either attempt 70 kilometres on foot in a maximum of 16 hours or 100 kilometres on mountain bikes in 12 hours.

They will set off from Almeria City, passing through Huercal de Almeria, Viator, Pechina, Enix and Felix until they get to the finishing line in Roquetas de Mar. Speaking at the event presentation,

Almeria City mayor Ramon FernandezPacheco underlined the “special link” with the Legion, which he said had “once again demonstrated its commitment to the city and to the province.”

The city council head also stressed the benefits of the event for provincial hotels, restaurants and businesses.

Diputacion President Javier A Garcia said La Desertica put Almeria “on the podium of these kinds of races, having gained a privileged position in the national sporting calendar.”

He also echoed the mayor ’s view that the event brings economic benefits, helping to attract visitors to the province outside the peak holiday months.

“Thanks to this thousands of people discover all the excellent qualities which the Costa Almeria offers,” he commented, stressing, “sport generates wealth and employment.”

The La Desertica will be staged on Friday October 18 and Saturday October 19.

Wowing bloggers WOWIN G bloggers with Almeria’s attractions.

This was the aim of a provincial government Tourism Service-organised trip for a group of Spanish travel bloggers and journalists to get the message out to a wide audience about the many reasons for visiting Almeria.

The trip took the group all over the province to highlight the variety of visitor options, from the more obvious tourist stuff to the natural landscapes and the province’s industry.

Highlights included the museums of Terque, the Tabernas solar power platforms, areas used as locations for the movie Exodus, Lubrín, Mojacar, Lucainena, the remains of Bedar’s mining activities and the Sorbas caves.

CONCERN: Waste-water treatment plants are “in very bad condition” the mayor maintains.

PROBLEMS to be resolved were top of the agenda at a meeting between the Huercal-Overa mayor and the Junta’s Environment delegate.

Francisca Lourdes Fernandez, alongside Town Planning Environment councillor Monica Ruiz, discussed the situation of the municipal waste-water treatment plants with the regional government’s Agriculture and Fis hing de pa rtme nt’s A lmer i a del egat e Aranzazu Martin.

The plants are, according to the mayor, “in very bad condition,” which she maintains “impacts on our residents’ quality of life.”

Fernandez said the council is looking to address the issue as soon as possible with “an ambitious project” to improve the systems in the waste-water treatment plants in the Los Menas, El Pilar, San Francisco, El Saltador and Santa María de Nieva districts, and that the improvements would require an

investment of €600,000.

In the case of La Molineta, the mayor said, the council idea is a connection with the municipal treatment plant.

Resolving the issue of the closure of the La Parata rubbish dump was also on the meeting agenda.

It is, the mayor said, a matter of concern to her administration as it should have been settled years ago, accusing the previous local government of having “avoided” the issue.

She said her governing team aimed to address the situation “as soon as possible,” and had therefore also requested the collaboration of the regional government.

According to Fernandez environmental issues in the municipality “have for years been forgotten.”

She continued, “Our goal is to work so that growth, development and environmental sustainability go hand-in-hand in our municipality.”

Weather battered coast action AREAS of the provincial coastline battered by the September storms will benefit from nearly €1 million in government funding for urgent action.

The Ministry for Ecologicial Transition will, through the Coast and Sea Sustainable General Management, invest €970,000 in emergency works in the municipalities of Almeria, Nijar, Carboneras, Mojacar, Garrucha, Vera, Cuevas del Almanzora and Pulpi.

A statement from the Sub-delegation of the Government in Almeria said the main damage detected was the disappearance of sand from beaches due to the strong torrents and the accumulation of waste material which had been dragged along by the flood waters.

The measures will accordingly consist essentially in adding more sand to places where it is depleted and cleaning away rubbish.

Beaches set to get sand transfers are Costacabana, El Perdigal and Cabo de Gata in Almeria, San Jose and Aguamarga in Nijar, El Lancon in Carboneras, the Red Cross, parador and hotel beaches in Mojacar, Garrucha town, El Playazo and the nudist beach in Vera, Quitapellejos, Rambla del Jatico and Pozo del Esparto in Cuevas del Almanzora, and Pichirichi, Mar Rabiosa, Cala Tia Antonia and Cala Pajizo in Pulpi.

Waste clean ups will be carried out on Vera’s Playazo and the Quitapellejos in Cuevas. Vegetation residues will also be removed from the mouth of the Almanzora river.

Road works reach key stage

THE project to turn the Garrucha-Vera road into a dualcarriageway has reached a key stage.

Last week the focus was on installing 15 huge girders for the river Antas viaduct. Once the new structure is completed, the structure on the old road will be demolished.

The second phase of the works on the A-352 involves creating an extra lane each way on a 4.3-kilometre stretch connecting with the coast road at Las Buganvillas roundabout at a cost of €14.7 million.

The Andalucia regional government’s Public Works and Infrastructure department restarted the works in July.

They had been paralysed since autumn last year.

The aim of the project is to improve traffic flow on what is one of the main connections between the A-7 Mediterranean motorway and the coast.

An average of 14,500 vehicles use the road a day, rising to some 24,000 in the peak summer months.

Legendary film locations MOVIE buffs can discover locations used for Sergio Leone’s Spaghetti Westerns thanks to a provincial government book.

The Diputacion de Almeria announced a new print fun of the ‘La Almeria de Sergio Leone’ guidebook.

The publication features routes to sites in Almeria which the Italian filmmaker used in five of his movies. They include the classic Dollars trilogy starring a young Clint Eastwood: For a Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

The guide also covers locations for Once Upon a Time in the West, with a cast including Claudia Cardinale, Charles Bronson, Jason Robards and Henry Fonda, and Once Upon a Time in the Revolution, with Rod Steiger and James Coburn.

Written by Juanen Perez Miranda and Juan Gabriel Garcia, the book was originally presented at the FICAL Almeria International Film Festival in 2016 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the shooting of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

Almeria Culture and Cinema deputy Manuel Guzman said it wasn’t just movie fans who would find the book interesting, “but anyone who wants to discover Almeria Province through the natural sets which Sergio Leone immortalised in his films.”

Co-author Juanen Perez Miranda said the book aimed to open up the world of cinema “through the beauty

of the landscapes and locations which Leone loved, places which invite adventure.

“Almeria is a privileged land: its scenic diversity has turned it into thousands of the world’s places and a major attraction for tourists, visitors and fans of the seventh art.”

Fellow author Juan Gabriel Garcia described Leone as “the most impor-

tant director who has ever filmed in Almeria due to his talent and brilliance and for bringing many benefits to the province.”

He said the Italian director played a major part in the “consolidation of our cinematographic industry, which attracted a wave of shoots to the province at the same time as shaking up the Western genre.”

Festival pat on the back VERA Council has given itself a pat on the back for this year’s San Cleofas festival.

“A complete success both in terms of participation and approval by residents and visitors for the suggested novelties,” was how Festivals councillor Amparo Garcia summed up how the celebrations had gone.

The local authority said the public had given the thumbs up to the changes introduced for this edition of the week-long event, notably the decision to move the midday fiesta away from the town centre to the El Palmeral fairground.

According to the council the midday activities had this year attracted the highest ever number of visitors.

Scenic hikes A NEW season of Huercal-Overa Council-organised hikes gets underway on Sunday.

Keen walkers can look forward to taking on the circular 11.5-kilometre medium difficulty El Castellar to Usero walk across the border in Murcia.

The local authority’s Sports department has organised eight hikes in all in various scenic locations between now and mid-May. They include the Sierra Almagrera, the Sierra de Maria and the Sierra de los Filabres.

“Two of the main attractions of this municipal programme are the incomparable surroundings and the contact with nature,” commented Huercal-Overa

mayor Francisca Lourdes Fernandez.

The mayor encouraged local residents to “enjoy these wonderful routes which the Sports department team have prepared with enthusiasm and dedication, which keeps the schedule attractive and opens up new corners of our terrain, creating fans of nature and of hiking.”

Registration for the hikes is Monday to Friday in the week running up to each hike, and can be done in person at the municipal sports pavillion or online at www.deportes.huercal-overa. es.

The maximum number for each hike is 50.

The council highlighted the popularity of this year two big acts, 80’s pop group Ole Ole and Seville band Siempre Asi, as well as traditional events like the jousting for ribbons and the street processions.

The councillor also stressed there had been no “incidents or altercations” during the celebration, but rather “a festival atmosphere we have all enjoyed.”

She drew particular attention to what she described as the “healthy” participation of young people in reference to the special police and Guardia Civil campaign to prevent so-called ‘botellones,’ or gatherings of youngsters in public places to drink.

Park progress IMPROVEMENTS to Adra’s Cercado park are progressing apace.

Mayor Manuel Cortes recently went to see for himself how the more than €106,000 works are going, accompanied by members of his administration and the council technicians responsible for carr ying out the changes.

The park will be a place where “sport, adventure, leisure and green areas will come together” for all ages to enjoy, he commented.

Facilities will include a CrossFit area and a children’s playground with picnic zone. In addition a wooden hut to house a library is under construction. There will also be a boules court.

What’s more the park improvements take respect for the environment into account. It will be equipped with LED lighting and will have lowmaintenance, sustainable gardens.

The park improvements are 80 per cent financed by the EU Regional Development Fund and 20 per cent by the local council.

The works are expected to be completed within weeks.

The Prime Minister has confirmed that he will never ask for an extension to the deadline and promised that the UK will walk away from Europe on October 31 with or without a deal.

Backing rural employment A TOTAL of 89 municipalities are set to benefit from some €9 million in government funding for rural employment initiatives.

The Provincial Commission for the PFEA Rural Employment Development Programme met last week to finalise the process of allocating the financing for projects presented by the local councils.

In all, 214 projects will be put into action between now and next June across the province. They include carrying out works like repairs and paving in public spaces, garden maintenance, improvements to urban infrastructure and reforms to schools and Guardia Civil stations.

The just over €9.1 million of funds comes out of the State Employment Public Service and subsidises costs like salaries and contributions for unemployed workers.

Among those making up the

provincial PFEA commission are the Government sub-delegate, the Junta de Andalucia’s government delegate in Almeria and territorial delegates with responsibilities for employment and local administration, and the head of the provincial Employment and Immigration agency, as well as representatives from the provincial administration, the Andalucia Federation of Municipalities and Provinces, trade unions, the ASEMPAL business association and agricultural sector organisations.

“This programme and the contribution the government makes aimed at unemployed workers in the province is a factor in the development of the municipalities, and at the same time an important instrument in the struggle against depopulation in the interior of the province and in keeping our villages alive,” commented Government Sub-delegate Manuel de la Fuente.

Home stretch for ‘vital’ works

RENOVATION and enlargement works on Adra’s La Curva multiple uses building and medical centre are in the home stretch.

The centre and the new facilities should be in use by mid-November, Adra mayor Manuel Cortes revealed during a visit to the works last week.

The mayor described the nearly €180,000 project as “vital” for the area.

He explained the building will have a brand new 285 sqm floor on which there will be an expanded library and three spacious classrooms for various uses. On the ground floor there will be a second medical consulting room.

Cortes said the facilities will be “more complete and much more accessible, above all thinking of our elderly.” The mayor also remarked that he felt “very proud and satisfied” to see the project become a reality.

“It is going to be a building which is in line with the neighbourhood and the needs of La Curva residents,” he said.

Scammer lacks attention

ATOCHA STATION: Where the clueless con artist was outsmarted by a group of tourists.

A CON artist got more than he bargained for when he tried to scam a free ticket from tourists at Atocha station in the heart of Madrid.

A local man overheard the conversation in which the scammer tried to explain to a group of tourists that he had lost his ticket and wallet and needed money to get back to Valladolid (Castilla y León).

Suspicious of the man’s motives, the tourists questioned him on which river runs through the centre of Valladolid, to which he

replied, the Ebro.

The actual river that runs through the town is the Pisuerga, not the Ebro.

The tourists also pointed out that the AVE train to Valladolid doesn’t leave from Atocha but in fact from the Chamartin station across town.

The commuter, who witnessed the interaction, wrote of his experience in a Twitter post under the username @Gauginaepicuro, adding: ‘And that, kids, is why you should pay attention to geography at school.’

Double well tragedy THE bodies of two men have been found down a well at a feed company in Valladolid (Madrid).

The bodies were found on Friday after a 112 call was made claiming a 58-year-old employee of the company had fallen down the well located on the Camino Viejo de Simancas.

Emergency services from the Fire Brigade, the Local and National Police, the Emergency Coordination Centre of the Civil Protection Agency and the Emergency Medical Unit of the Castilla y León Health Service attended the scene.

Anyone who has lived continuously in the UK between 1980 and 1996 (a minimum of one year) will not be able to donate blood in Spain due to the risk of transmitting mad cow disease. Similarly, there are restrictions if you have received a blood transfer in the UK. However, each region may have different rules about donation. Call the donation helpline on 935 573 500. If you are eligible, you can give blood at your local hospital, or via the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja) at one of their clinics, or in one of their mobile units. You can check dates and locations by visiting www.donarsangre.org.

A donor card is not necessary to give blood. On the first visit you will have to provide DNI, NIE, passport or a driving licence. If you are already registered in the Blood Bank, you only need a donor card or a document with your name and surname.

The process of blood donation takes just 10 minutes in which 450 ml are collected (equating to 10 per cent of the total blood circulation of an adult person).

Despite huge technological advances, the only way for hospitals to obtain blood is through the generosity of the public. The blood is carefully screened for disease to make sure it is safe.

After a tattoo, you must wait four months to be eligible to donate.

After surgery, the exclusion period will depend on the type of intervention. After minor surgical procedures, you cannot donate blood for seven days or until you are fully recovered. After undergoing major surgery, you will not be able to donate blood for four months.

The rarest blood type is AB, present in 1 per cent of Caucasians, according to research by the America Red Cross.

Blood transfusions are carried out daily in Spanish hospitals with more than 6,200 patients being given them, of whom almost a quarter are fighting cancer and a similar figure receiving transfusions during or after surgery.

Spain has around two million donors in total, but needs closer to four million.

TACKLING ADDICTIONS THE provincial government is taking steps to help tackle addictions.

The Diputacion de Almeria has designed a programme of 27 training and educational workshops on the prevention of drug and other addictions, including technology.

The sessions will be held across the province

in October and November and will be aimed not only at professionals, but also at teenagers and families.

“Family is fundamental in our society and they are the first who are going to detect abnormal behaviour and who are going to help out us out of this situation,” commented Provincial Well-being deputy, Angeles Martinez.

“Very often we lack the tools and the skills to face this,” she said, adding, “with these workshops what we want to do is to inform, train and educate families so conflict is reduced, attachments and family bonds are improved, and they can carry out really effective preventive work.”

The 60-year-old identified as EHB faces charges for transporting a protected species without the corresponding Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) documentation.

Officers discovered the four ‘Testudo Graeca’ tortoises during routine inspections of vehicles disembarking from ferries doing the Almeria to N orth Africa crossing. When they came

The teachers will be professionals from the Diputacion de Almeria Drug Dependency and Addictions Provincial Service, who will run the workshops in blocks of three 90-minutes sessions.

The goal of these workshops is to give parents specific training on addictions to drugs and the development of improved family relations and on bringing up children and supervising their behaviour.

The regional government workshops focusing on the prevention of addictions and the positive use of information technology and communications will be held in 20 municipalities, including Carboneras, Chirivel, Cuevas, Los Gallardos, Mojacar, Pulpi, Seron, Tabernas and Turre.

The idea is to make families aware of the possible dangers associated with technology.

“We are going to equip families with tools and useful resources which allow them to detect possible addictive behaviour and which put them at risk, such as sharing images with unknown people, preventing school bullying, etc,” Martinez said.

Each workshop will be divided into three sessions of between 60 and 90 minutes, and will be weekly with groups of 15 to 25 participants.

Man dies on pilgrimage A YOUNG Irish man reportedly died tragically following a swimming accident in Spain.

The incident is believed to have occurred last Thursday evening in a busy tourist resort in the north of the country.

It has been reported that the young victim, believed to be in his 20’s, had just set out to undertake the Camino walking pilgrimage across France and Spain to Santiago de Compostela with a group of friends when the tragedy took place.

The precise details of the accident have not yet been disclosed, but the young man reportedly went for a swim following a long day of walking under the harsh Spanish sun.

It seems that the young victim got into difficulty while in the water and was later discovered in an unresponsive state before being brought to shore.

Despite efforts to resuscitate the young man, he was tragically pronounced dead a short time later.

FATAL: The Rottweiler reportedly bit the 47-year-old on the face and thorax.

Dog kills owner A MAN died after he was attacked by one of his own dogs in Coslada in Madrid on Sunday.

The 47-year-old was at home when the animal, a Rottweiler, leapt on him and bit him in the face and thorax, Spanish media reported.

The victim, who reportedly had three guard dogs, was at his property located on an industrial estate with family members

when the attack took place.

A call to 112 alerted the emergency services to the incident. When the medical team arrived at the scene they could only confirm the man’s death.

As well as the Rottweiler which caused the injuries the man had two other dogs. The Coslada Local Police Canine Unit reportedly transferred all three animals to an animal protection centre.

Marking World Tourism Day Constructive recycling

MOJACAR celebrated World Tourism Day with guided tours of the village’s most important historic sites.

Led by staff from the municipal tourist office, the visits began at the permanent exhibition at the castle art gallery documenting the evolution of the an-

nual Moors & Christians festivities over the last four decades since its creation. The collection features many of the costumes used in the processions, as well as the fiesta posters and photographs.

Celebrated on September 27, the United N ation’s World Tourism Day is aimed at highlighting the social, cultural and economic role of tourism and at how the sector can contribute to sustainable development.

A PALOMARES school has a new playground thanks to clever recycling and collaboration.

The Alarcon Fernandez de Arellano school play area is constructed from pieces removed from Cuevas del Almanzora municipal parks during remodelling works.

The result is an appealing children’s recreation zone, which also shows the importance of giving new life to discarded materials, the local council said.

The idea to make constructive use of materials being taken out of the parks came initially from the school’s

They approached the council about the possibility of restoring pieces and installing them on the playground.

The council praised the schools’ parents for being so active. In recent years they have, the local authority pointed out, helped bring about improvements to digital equipment and air-conditioning in classrooms.

The association also belongs to the ‘Ecoescuelas’ network, as part of which it organises activities and initiatives related to caring for the environment.

The Education councillor described the play areas as “a new space loaded with values, something which is really important in the education of boys and girls.”

The Palomares mayor underlined the importance of working side-by-side with AMPA “to continue improving our village’s education areas and facilities.”

The local authority will, she added, “continue supporting schools and parents wi t h t he com m on goal of improving the lives of our pupils.”

Loggerhead turtle released

Axarquia Day at Tivoli World

MURCIA has welcomed two baby loggerhead turtles, the first to be born in the region in more than a century.

The turtles have only a one in a 1,000 chance of surviving into adulthood in the wild. The last known loggerhead turtle eggs to have been found on a beach in the region were in the late 19th century. But last week, two of 69 eggs buried in the sand at Cala Arturo hatched in the regional park of Calblanque off the coast line of Cartagena.

The eggs, buried on July 28, have carefully been looked after by the El Valle rescue centre with the hope that 10-12 more eggs could soon hatch. A 35-year-old female released into the wild is reportedly ready to ovulate and the agency hopes she will travel back to her birthplace to lay eggs.

THE amusement park Tivoli World in Benalmadena celebrated Day of Axarquia on Saturday.

The event was officially opened by the president of the Mancomunidad de Municipios of Axarquia, José Juan Jiménez along with fellow councillors and the coordinator of Tivoli World, José Luis Guzmán.

“From the institution we would like to thank the people in charge of Tivoli World who have thought of our region to give promotion and to pay tribute to each of its people,” thanked Jimenez.

“With the celebration of the Day of the Costa del Tropical Axarquia we can show our tourist potential, but also allow a day of coexistence between many families from different villages in the region,” he continued.

For the celebration, the park opened its doors free of charge to anyone with a residency card of Axarquia, or those who collected an invitation from town halls, coastal tourism offices or in the APTA office.

The pass also meant that Axarquian tourists did not have to queue, using a special entrance to access the rides and attractions.

Local businesses were also invited to set up tents to promote their wares to anyone visiting the park as well as animations and live performances that were held throughout the day.

CLEANING UP: Young people at the forefront of the fight to save the sea.

Beach cleaning

LAST Saturday a large number of people arrived at the San Francisco beach, for a day of shoreline cleaning supported by the Fuengirola Council.

The intention was not only to remove the waste that manages to make its way onto the beach, but also to highlight the importance of keeping the beaches in good condition and promoting cycling.

The Spanish Institute of Oceanography had a stand on the beach and gave a talk to those present about the state of the Mediterranean and international waters.

The hope is that as public awareness increases, so over a period of time, Fuengirola will be able to boast that visitors may enjoy 100 per cent sustainable beaches.

It is aimed mainly at schoolchildren and students and this is a Canadian film Youth Unstoppable which highlights the activities taken by young people around the world who are leading the fight against climate emergency in order to save the planet and their own futures.

Sport by the sea

CANCER charities have benefited from a €1,000 donation from the fundraising group Giving4Giving.

The group raised the funds at an event at the Brew Rock bar in Albir.

The money was presented to Lisa Griffin the bar owner who organised the benefit night.

Giving4Giving has now donated €139,000 to charity with two more donations to follow this month.

Giving4Giving is seeking volunteers and donations for all their shops and provide a pick-up service for larger goods.

SPORTS enthusiasts in Adra now have brand new facilities right by the sea.

The local council has opened up the El Palmeral multi sports court next to the municipal indoor swimming pool, offering the public what Mayor Manuel Cortes said was somewhere for children and adults to practise something ‘as healthy and fun’ as football, basketball and more.

Financed by local authority and European funds, the €62,000 facilities are, the council said, part of a policy to make sport readily available to residents and to revitalise public areas.

Speaking at the official inauguration of the court last week, Cortes explained it is not just multi-sport, but also multi-purpose: one of the sides can be taken up so it can also serve as a stage for cultural events.

“These kinds of multi-functional public spaces generate social integration between local residents,” the mayor commented.

A roaring success

THE Red Carpet event on the stunning rooftop of the OD Port Portals Hotel on behalf of the JoyRon Foundation was a huge success on Friday evening.

Each year local residents pull out their finest outfits and head to the fabulous charity event held by Real Estates United, a platform that is designed for real estate agents and partners to collaborate in Mallorca.

The night kicked off with a photo call by Celebrity Mallorca Magazine with the glamorous dancers from Tito’s Mallorca with music by the saxophonist Adrian Sanso Ali. Entertainment was provided by the pole dancers from Louisa Pole’s Pole Fitness andCharley Hamblyn serenaded the crowds with her amazing vocal talents. The music continued into the night with another performance by Pole Fitness before an auction for a fabulous prize provided by the Ella Project, a $10,000 marketing package with Huffpost, Forbes and other high-end marketing platforms.

The event ended with a raffle hosted by Ron Hawes and Euro Weekly’s very own Ben Mulvey with 34 prizes from a range of local sponsors.

Every penny of the €7,945 raised at the event will go to the JoyRon Foundation, a charity with the sole aim of helping children in need in the Baleares, by raising funds, that will be applied to bring levels of joy, comfort and essential support to the children.

MULTIPURPOSE: The mayor explained the facilities can be used for different sports and cultural events.

FINANCE Getting older

THE UK Office for National Statis­ tics has revealed the fact that by the end of 2018, there were 584,024 British citizens aged 90 or more and longer life expectancy is increasing.

Whilst it used to be that women lived longer than men, there has been a recent significant spurt in the number of men who pass the age of 90 and insurers believe that neither the government nor indi­ viduals are planning ahead suffi­ ciently to deal with the greater need for long term funding.

Thomas Cook Fall Out

THERE are a number of longterm financial implications following the passing of the Thomas Cook Group into Administration which will affect not just the UK, but other European economies.

Firstly, the British government de­ cided not to assist in injecting £200 million (€220 million) into the compa­ ny to see it through the winter, but it is estimated that it will cost £60 mil­ lion (€66 million) alone to charter air­ craft to return those stranded abroad.

LEGALLY SPEAKING What about a noisy neighbour?

The owner of the apartment above me in our community has rented out her flat to a woman and her daughter. Now they have bought a puppy, and we are subjected to frequent loud bark­ ing. Also, the mother sometimes stays out until late at night, leaving the daughter to play noisily until around 3am. I and other neighbours have protested to the mother about the noise. I presented a petition to the administrator and we have spoken to the presi­ dent and vice president about it. Do all rental con­ tracts have ‘No Pets’ included? Is ‘noise after mid­ night’ a violation of community rules or Spanish law?

No, not all rental contracts forbid YOU AND THE the keeping of pets LAW IN SPAIN and there is no spe­ cific prohibition against noise after midnight either in community rules or Spanish law. However, if the moth­ er leaves a minor child alone in the house late at night, she could face serious charges if someone informed the authorities. A simple mention of this possibility might bring about better cooperation.

Spain’s finances

GOOD financial news for Spain is that the US­based group S&P Glob­ al has upgraded its opinion of the Spanish economy to an ‘A’ even though there is due to be another election in November.

Some analysts think that growth for the economy in 2019 and 2020 will be less than originally forecast but even the most pessimistic view supports expansion by at least 1.2 per cent.

Spanish government bonds are also outperforming many others in the Euro market so things appear positive.

NEW IMF chief THE Bulgarian economist Kristalina Georgieva will be the new managing director of the International Monetary Fund taking over from Christine Lagarde.

The 66-year-old Georgieva is the first person from an emerging economy to lead the IMF.

Store closures IN a bid to reverse falling profits, Sainsbury’s plans to shut 15 supermarkets, 40 convenience stores and up to 70 Argos stores in the UK as it looks to reduce costs by £500 million (€550 million) over the next five years.

Losing out A BBVA report highlights that although women get better results than men at university, their succes is not recognised in business, as many find it hard to secure jobs and those that do can be paid up to 9.5 per cent less than men.

Finance and education CURRENTLY companies throughout Europe spend trillions of euros in insurance of all types, but there is one area in which many are very vulnerable.

The past few years have seen huge headlines concerning cyber­attacks on banks, government de­ partments, stores, credit card companies, indeed any organisation that stores sensitive details on computers is a potential target.

Last year, according to the European Insurance and Retirement Pensions Authority (EIOPA) the val­ ue of the cyber­insurance market increased by 72 per cent.

Companies have gone out of business due to hacking and their inability to afford to pay compen­ sation to victims, so EIOPA believes it is imperative that companies take very seriously the ongoing risk and protect themselves by investing in insurance.

Sterling rocked by chaotic month in UK politics

BREXIT JITTERS: Driving GBP exchange rates to new multi-year lows. political developments.

Sterling initially plummeted when Boris Johnson announced that parliament would be sus­ pended for five weeks from early September.

However subsequent move­

ment in the pound has been large­ ly positive, as Johnson faced a number of setbacks and the odds of a no­deal Brexit fell.

A string of upbeat UK econom­ ic data added to the upside in Sterling, including a robust GDP

reading.

Occupying almost all the atten­ tion of EUR investors over the last month has been the European Central Bank and its long awaited stimulus package.

The stimulus measures were ul­ timately received positively by markets, helping to buoy the sin­ gle currency going into the second half of September.

Finally, trade in the US dollar has been mixed in recent weeks in response to rising fears that a US recession could be looming fol­ lowing an inversion in the US bond yield curve and Fed rate cut spec­ ulation.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT WITH their plastic bottles, food cartons and litter left lying everywhere in their wake, plus the output of untold thousands of vehicle exhausts as they idled in traffic jams, these recent, badly mislead young ‘climate change’ protesters have left a carbon footprint that will probably not be ‘offset’ until they reach their coming of age.

This present generation has to be the most spoiled, self­centered, misinformed bunch of youngsters the civilised world has ever pro­ duced. They have air­conditioning in the class­ rooms, mobile phones and gismos, they ride in cars to school, they suck up junk food like hoovers and insist on the latest trendy outfits at all times. All of these luxury products, which they seem to think are their God given right, are manufactured or supplied by enormous compa­ nies that pour billions of tonnes of carbon diox­ ide emission into the Earth’s atmosphere.

These children’s selfish attitudes and lifestyles cause far more damage to our environment than the previous generations they are so keen to accuse. Those preceding them were mobile and ‘designer’ free and took bicycles or walked to their destinations. Most had never experi­ enced jet travel or air conditioning and opened

Self-centred and spoiled windows when it was hot, instead of closing them. They received new shoes or clothes only when the previous attire needed replacing, ate home­made sandwiches instead of Whoppers and read books. However, in these modern day youngsters’ defence, most have of course been brainwashed and mislead by the ‘usual sus­ pects!’

Many of the culprits are those who laughingly profess to be ‘school teachers.’ Stringy haired trendies, who actually started the rot when the first long haired leftie ‘free thinker’ plonked his behind on his desk and told the class to call him Jon! The same leftie brigade who welcome drag acts into the classrooms to ‘enlighten’ four­year­ olds, abolish winning and losing.

Well this is the result. A whole generation of youngsters who not only have no respect for their elders but truly do believe they are actually superior. Ever increasing numbers of them would rather walk into the class with a knife than a ruler. I also wonder who was actually re­ sponsible for these utterly disruptive protests.

Don’t tell me it was some precocious Swedish

16­year­old. Even this young lady admitted her total surprise at the extent of the demonstrations.

No, this was an idea hi­ jacked by adults and cal­ lously exploited to further their own intentions. How do I know? Well, for one thing it was planned for a weekday wasn’t it? The organisers of this particu­ lar exercise were well aware that had it been organised at a weekend their protesting protégés would be too busy buried in their mobiles and Xboxes or showing off their latest designer trainers to even think about actually giving up their precious spare time.

As it was it was a fun day out playing legalised ‘hooky’. If it had been parents taking their chil­ dren out of school for the day, they could have

been prosecuted. Any legal action being taken against the organisers of this lot? No? Somehow I thought not.

GOOD morning, class. No talking at the back, please. I’d like to begin with a moan.

In the UK, one in four children starts school overweight and one in 10 is obese: by the end of primary school, this per­ centage doubles to one in five.

Who’s to blame? Or, is it a combination of factors? Schools have an important role but families and the food industry (cutting sugar and calories in food before it hits our shelves and plates) are all involved.

As for schools, programmes encourag­ ing children to take more exercise and eat healthily don’t improve childhood obesity or activity levels according to a British Medical Journal study that assessed 600+ primary school pupils in the West Mid­ lands in a 12­month anti­obesity pro­ gramme last year.

So, is it the fault of parents and today’s lifestyle that no exercise takes place? And if parents are to blame, what’s caused this? Fluoride in the water? Benefit de­

But aren’t other social issues at play too?

Can’t let them out of the house, for in­ stance, for fear a stranger might look at them or, even worse, try to talk to them.

Instead park them in front of the TV every night. And then there’s litigation. Contact sports in the playground banned in case little Johnny slips and the school’s sued.

Or is it the fault of teachers? Teachers who believe there should be no winner in the egg and spoon race. Can’t play conkers, might bruise your knuckles. Can’t have a competitive race, the loser might be upset and suffer lifelong trauma.

Finally, while exercise is clearly impor­ tant, it’s more important children can

read, write, spell, add and subtract. It isn’t crucial they know how to run, jump and throw a ball once they leave school. It is crucial they’ll be employable in a world vastly different from the one we grew up in.

What we don’t want is a generation of young people not only physically inca­ pable but socially inept AND totally unpre­ pared for the realities of life in the Brave New World of Brexit Britain.

Brain food WITH life expectancy ever increasing, many of us are looking for ways to improve our quality of life a n d re v e r s e a n y d a m a g e caused by an unhealthy lifestyle.

Fortunately, researchers in Spain have found a way of reversing brain damage brought about by high fat diets.

A study at the Jaume I University in Castella de la Plana found mice which were given high levels of fat developed damage to their ner­ vous system similar to that in Alzheimer’s patients, but that this was reversed when they were fed a plant hormone.

This hormone, abscisic acid, was found to reduce inflammation in the part of the brain where we store memories. Researchers be­ lieve this effect may be caused be­ cause abscisic acid helps regulate

insulin levels which, when out of balance, can cause inflammation in insulin receptors in the hippocam­ pus, the region of the brain which governs long term memories. In­ flammation of the nervous system and unregulated insulin levels are both linked to Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia.

The study’s author, Alberto Ribes Navarro, explained: “We have been able to prove that the expression of proteins required for the proper functioning of insulin decreases in neuro­inflammatory situations induced by a high­fat di­ et.” He added: “With the addition of abscisic acid to the high­fat diet it is possible to rebalance the regu­ lation of these genes, even helping them reach normal levels.”

Abscisic acid is found in a plant’s xylem (the stem) and is used by plants to help with growth and de­ velopment of tolerance to harsh

conditions. The hormone is found naturally in fruit and vegetables. A 2015 study into the acid also found it played a role in regulating blood sugar, which could in turn help de­ lay the development of diabetes.

Ana Maria Sanchez, who headed up this latest study, shows how this new evi­ dence goes even further, even undoing d a m a g e caused by an un­ healthy lifestyle. She concluded: “We have verified how a vegetable hormone, abscisic acid, is able to counter the nega­ tive effects that a high­fat diet has on the central nervous system.”

REPAIR: Fruit and vegetables can reverse damage.

Year round YOU have spent the summer pro­ tecting your skin, but while you may think autumn is a chance to take a break from using a daily SPF, the reality is everyone can benefit from wearing sun protection year round.

The two rays delivered by the sun ­ UVA and UVB ­ both work dif­ ferently. And while UVB absorbed in moderate quantities can offer a series of health benefits, including helping our bodies create vitamin D, as well as working as a mood enhancer, and treating some skin conditions, UVA offers no such benefits.

In fact, UVA rays, which pene­ trate deeper, simply damage the skin, causing premature wrinkles and increasing the risk of skin can­ cer. UVB, while potentially helpful in small amounts, also dramatically increases the risk of cancer.

Even on a cloudy day, UV rays can still reach the skin so make sure to wear a daily SPF protection, ideally factor 30 or above, and top up frequently throughout the day.

Gym phobia NEW findings from UK gym operator PureGym have revealed that 50 per cent of non­gym goers in the UK admit to feeling scared of the gym, with some stating their gym phobia is worse than more com­ monly recognised fears such as heights, spiders or injections.

The study compared gym anxiety to other com­ mon fears and helped to show that some people are so spooked by the gym that one in four would rather choose to have an injection, or be alone in a room with a spider than go to the gym.

Thirty per cent of millennials said they’d rather give up their phone for a day instead of going to the gym alone, and one in four women said they’d rather go on a rollercoaster than head to the gym.

Almost one in five non gym­goers also said they currently would rather stand atop a skyscraper than visit the gym alone.

Tasty fat burning fruits WHAT you eat is just as important as what you don’t when it comes to reducing body weight.

But fortunately, eating fruit is a great way to burn fat and keep cravings for sweet stuff at bay. Research car­ ried out by the World Health Or­ ganisation, American Heart As­ sociation and Dietry Guidelines for Americans among others, has confirmed that fruit intake is positively related to weight loss.

Fruits contain very few calo­ ries while also being crammed with vital nutrients to keep stomachs full for longer. And fruits can be enjoyed during breakfast, lunch, dinner, or as a snack for in­between meal munchies.

Studies have also shown that eating specific fruits help burn fat more efficiently. Here are some of the more effective fat­ burning fruits.

SOCIAL SCENE I WAS really looking forward to trying to do a few things differently this year with grapes.

Our vines were full of flowers a few months ago and were quickly replaced with miniature fruits.

I watched them eagerly as they started to grow, but someone, or should I say, something, was also watching them. Sadly, the something, in the form of birds, got to them far too early for me to be able to do anything with them.

Thankfully however, a friend had so many, I came to the rescue and stole a few bunches. Having already done quite a bit of research looking for ideas, this week’s recipe was one that really caught my eye, and I just had to try it.

The recipe actually calls for seedless grapes, but the vari­ ety I had picked had seeds; I decided to go ahead, after all what damage could a few seeds do? I actually had everything I needed in the pantry cupboard already, so within minutes, the pan was on and the grapes were picked through and prepared in readiness. Served with soft H U E R C A L - O V E R A’ S Teatro Villa promises an autumn of culture.

Pickled Grapes Olive Tree Farm was set up about four years ago with the intention of achieving a level of self sufficiency.

We have poultry for meat and eggs, goats for milk, rabbits and small pigs for meat and harvest our 70 olive trees each year for oil. We also grow a variety of fruits and vegetables.

Leave it cool for a couple of minutes.

Add your prepared grapes, Rosemary and star anise to the jar.

Carefully pour over the pickling liquid so it covers the fruits and is just below the rim of the jar.

Leave them to cool com­ pletely, add the lid and seal it tightly. Leave in a dark cup­ board for four days to soak up the flavours. At this point they are ready to use. You can store them in the fridge for about a week, if they last that long, they are quite addictive!

NB. You can use different vinegars and different spices such as cinnamon, coriander seeds, black pepper corns etc, so don’t be afraid to play around with what you already have tucked away in your cup­ boards.

The Saudi Consulate displayed its famous hospitality and entertained the guests with typical Saudi delica­ cies and gastronomy.

Next week we will all attend an­ other traditional celebration at the Consulate of the Federal Republic of Germany for the anniversary of Ger­ man unification.

MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man DO you remember when you were younger, and maybe even now, people kept a diary?

It was a personal record of your daily life and the worst thing that could happen is that someone read it. Your personal thoughts, things you’d done and with whom. Now most people get totally de­ pressed if the whole world isn’t interested in what they are doing. How things change and, in my opinion, not for the better. I was married with two kids before I got my first email! I guess it’s progress and I have to ac­ cept it. Everything is instant. I don’t mind my coffee being instant, but everything else needs to slow down a little.

I use a computer security software com­ pany called McAfee. I got a notice saying it was up for renewal in two months’ time but there was nothing to worry about as it was on automatic renewal and it would au­ tomatically charge my credit card a certain amount. Anyway, it’s been doing some­ thing every now and again that was annoy­

ing me. It kept changing my search engine if I added a certain update, so I decided to look around at other companies. I can­ celled McAfee’s automatic renewal.

Well, the next day I get a warning from them about the consequences of not re­ newing ­ saying emerging cyber­attack techniques threaten devices worldwide and may let hackers steal your passwords, infiltrate private photos, emails, documents and exploit hardware flaws you have in your devices. This has been going on every day along with the odd special deal if I let them renew without question. All I need is a reminder that it needs renewing, not all this bombarding me with stuff.

I know I need protection software, but this is not the best way to sell it to me. I don’t like this automatic renewal stuff.

Recently I got a free subscription for Amazon Prime with my mobile phone com­ pany and I have to remember to cancel it.

My car insurance does it and so does my household insurance. That one you have to do three months before or you can’t cancel it, but they don’t send you a reminder ­ you have to remember. I wonder how many people forget they have things that auto­ matically renew on products they have tried and don’t use and just thought would run out after the trial period?

Pause for relief I’M sure we all know that deep ‘sigh of relief’ moment when, after much effort and heartache, everything slots into place and we can just relax. Well, we from our Church in Al­ jambra, near Albox, have just had one such mo­ ment.

For some months now, since a very amateur attempt at tree­surgery resulted in trees falling on the chapel roof, we’ve been on tenterhooks, waiting to learn the eventual outcome and whether we’d be able to continue holding ser­ vices there whilst the damage was being re­ paired.

September had been suggested as a possible start date for this work, but being Spanish time, plans continued for such as Harvest, Armistice and Christmas. So being told in early September that the chapel had to be cleared within two weeks caused a focusing of minds and some pretty rapid planning. The priority however was necessarily to find an alternative location for ser­ vices over the somewhat uncertain period need­ ed for renovation.

Having enjoyed using Aljambra Chapel since January 18, 2007, finding an acceptable alterna­ tive was quite a challenge. Many doubted the

possibility. But, being a Church, human effort was supplemented with prayer, and the near in­ stant result, far surpassing our wildest dreams, was the amazing offer of the chapel alongside the Tanatorio between Cantoria and Almanzora.

A beautiful and quite large chapel, with plenty of parking and its own separate entrance, ticked every box as it was realised there’d be little need for any disruption to the planned services. Most could simply be transferred to the new venue.

The Harvest Service however, originally planned for September 26 had to be resched­ uled to 19, giving little time for preparation or decoration. Much work was required clearing the building the following day (a very emotional time after nearly 13 years), which was followed on the 21st by the civic fiesta, service and pro­ cession, marking the temporary closure of Al­ jambra Chapel.

But it all passed off without a hitch, leaving us, as members of that Church to relax, enjoying that deep ‘sigh of relief’ moment mentioned earlier.

But as we relaxed, I couldn’t help but recall the words of Jesus to his disciples: “O ye of little faith, why ever did you doubt?” (Mt 8:26)

Compensation in pipeline COMPENSATION for British owners of illegal builds in Zurgena now facing demoli­ tion could be in the pipeline.

A judge in Almeria has giv­ en two administrators of a promotion company six months to pay out over €650,000 to foreign nation­ als, mainly British, who in good faith shelled out money for properties built on land which turned out not to be classified for development in Los Llanos del Peral area, Spanish press reported.

The amounts the company administrators would have to pay to individual owners would range from just short of €74,000 to a little over €150,000, according to Span­ ish media reports.

The judge has also told the promoter administrators they have six months to start pulling down the 111 unfin­ ished homes at their own ex­ pense.

The building works were halted by judicial order in January 2005.

Highway management

‘scandalous’ THE Almeria Popular Party has slammed past regional governments over the Almanzora highway.

Speaking at the conservative PP’s provincial headquarters last week, re­ gional Parliament member Ramon Her­ rera, accompanied by fellow regional MP Rosalia Espinosa, accused the previous left­leaning PSOE­run Junta de Andalucia administrations of the ‘scandalous man­ agement’ of the Almanzora dual­car­ riageway construction project, especially between 2010 and 2018.

They maintained there had been ‘sys­ tematic breaches’ on planning time and commitments on budgets, contracts and policy, also accusing past administrations of ‘a deficient and costly negotiation on the resolution and expiry of the last con­ tracts formalised in this period.’

Herrera pointed out the highway was first promised in 1985 and in the Junta’s

Jail call for property fraud A WOMAN accused of ripping­off a couple on a property in Chirivel could get a lengthy prison sentence.

The Almeria Provincial Court will call for five and a half years behind bars for allegedly pocketing tens of thousands from the pair, ac­ quired on the promise of building them a house, Spanish press reported.

The Public Prosecutor will also request a fine of €8 a day for 14 months for a fraud charge.

The case dates back to 2004. According to Spanish media the suspect offered the foreign couple the possibility of acquiring a plot for them with a view to constructing a home with a pool.

Reportedly the pair made payments to the accused adding up to €134,250 between Janu­ ary 2005 and November 2006, who did noth­ ing in terms of the land purchase, obtaining permission from the local council or the agreed construction.

Reviving old tradition AN old tradition has been brought back to life in Aljambra.

Albox Council’s Women and Outlying Areas depart­ ment revived the locality’s pilgrimage in honour of the ‘Divine Shepherdess,’ which hadn’t been celebrated in the locality for more than half a century.

Around 50 local residents turned out to celebrate the event, beginning with a gi­ ant paella. This was fol­ lowed by a five­kilometre procession along a route punctuated with tables with floral motifs from Aljambra to the Concepcion Parish Church.

Waiting to receive the pil­ grims were the parish priest and residents of the La Lo­ ma area, and together they celebrated mass.

Then it was back to Aljam­ abra to bring the celebra­ tions to a close.

That was the rumour after Mayor Francis­ co Torrecillas posted images of himself zip­ ping around the town’s Plaza Mayor on an electric scooter on his Facebook page with the message: ‘as you will see I am trying out the new vehicles which the councillors will use. Caring for the environment ­ it wouldn’t be bad!’

In fact it was just a joke, Torrecillas told a

local Spanish radio station.

The council head said he had noticed in­ creasingly more people with electric scooters and when he bumped into an old student he asked if he could have a go on his.

On a more serious note, the mayor also commented that the growth in the use of this kind of transportation meant “it will have to be regulated.”

He also said he might get one himself, but stressed he would also buy a crash helmet

THE granny of Oria has been honoured by local politicians.

Council members Con­ suelo Miron, Luis Garcia and Francisco Martinez, and spokesperson for the Oria PSOE party Diego Torres, presented 102­ year­old Maria Moreno with a bunch of roses and a plaque in recognition of her loyalty and love for the municipality and as ‘an example of life for all residents,’ Spanish press reported.

Although born in Par­ taloa, Maria has lived in Oria most of her life, hav­ ing moved to the munici­ pality when she was 18.

She has three children, 10 grandchildren and 12 great­grandchildren, and is one of the oldest grandmothers in the province.

Festival weekend MACAEL is gearing up for its annual festival this weekend.

The celebrations begin tomorrow, Friday, with an evening mass at the Santa Maria del Rosario Church, fol­ lowed by the official fiesta inauguration at 7.30pm, the turning on of the festival lights and a street procession. The fair­ ground will open up at 9pm.

Also at 9pm tomorrow night there will be a special concert by the Macael Musical Cultural Association band at the municipal theatre. Then at 11.30pm there will be a concert aimed at young­ sters in the municipal marquee.

Saturday’s highlights include a morn­ ing procession with the Macael drum and bugle band and the inauguration of the midday festivities in Calle Garcia Lorca. That night there will be live mu­ sic from the Orquesta Azahara and dancing until the early hours in the mu­ nicipal marquee, as well as a special performance by Spanish rock band Dvi­ cio.

There will be plenty to keep the youngest members of the family happy at midday on Sunday, with the Show Toy Story children’s entertainment and workshops, as well as bouncy castles.

THE Toyota 4Runner is no stranger to the road less travelled. We had a plan and have trained for a long time, we have been thinking about this game for quite a long time and obvi­ ously, Ireland had only been thinking about it for the last six or seven days. For us, it’s been a great performance.

“You have to be careful before the game, you don’t want to come across too arrogant and cocky. We had a lot of belief in our game plan and knew how strong Ireland were. Credit to my coaching team, at the set­piece we were able to hold theirs.

“Now it’s phase two, we have got another couple of games to go but we will enjoy tonight I reckon.”
