BOYFRIEND JAIL time looks increasingly likely for the boyfriend of Dana Leonte after more evidence emerges. The boyfriend of missing Romanian Dana Leonte is expected to be facing a long stint in prison as investigations have taken a dramatic turn this week. Following an increased search effort issued by crime investigators, human remains were found close to one of the recently visited locations of boyfriend Sergio Ruiz. Since Dana was first reported missing, the Guardia Civil placed Sergio under constant surveillance and implanted his telephone with a tracking device to monitor his whereabouts. His phone was tracked to a remote area of mountainside outside Arenas on more than one occasion, whilst the rest of his movements remained erratic. remains were officially identified as belonging to the 28year-old. An arrest warrant was immediately issued for long-standing prime suspect Sergio Ruiz who was arrested at his home and his belongings and property were analysed by forensic investigators. Throughout the whole process Sergio has maintained
his innocence, claiming that Dana left the country to return to Romania after getting into financial difficulties. However according to police reports released on Monday, a baseball bat with traces of hairs on it and blood marks around his home have been found. A hearing is expected to take place imminently, but according to the Provincial Court of
MOTRIL Local Police arrested a man after they allegedly caught him red-handed during a break-in at a local bar. Police were tipped off after a neighbour heard suspicious noises coming from the well-known establishment in Calle Santisimo. Once officers arrived, they noticed a window had been forced open. Officers alerted the bar owner who arrived to allow the officers access through the main door. The thief was found wearing all black clothing, hiding in a store cupboard to the rear of the property. According to the police report, the bar was a mess and two fruit machines had been forced open to gain access to the takings.

Leadership tactics
MAYOR of Almuñecar and La Herradura, Trinidad Herrera, has come under fire from opposition party Convergencia Andaluza over the party’s leadership tactics. The CA has denounced the PP, specifically Herrera, for refusing to call plenary sessions to discuss the region’s issues. In a statement, the CA explained, “The constitution includes the right of citizens to participate in public management through their democratically elected representatives.” As well as not instigating democratic plenary sessions, the leader is accused of being absent to five of the 12 sessions conducted in 2018, thus eliminating the ability to debate political proposals offered by opposition parties.The CA are pushing for change in the current procedures because at the present time, their proposals such as a reduction in IBI and the subsidising of year-round hotels that currently are unable to be discussed. Due to the considered illegal behaviour of the PP government, the CA have been forced to investigate the proper legal actions to partake in the opposition’s access to ‘fundamental rights.’

Fight to fix ‘irregular housing’

Doctors protest after latest attack

MORE than 50 health professionals staged a 15- minute protest outside the Torre del Mar Health Centre after the latest in a series of violent attacks against workers. The delegate for the Andalucian Medical Union of Axarquia, Juan Carmona, has lamented the increase in attacks, saying: “It is horrendous, this month alone there have been four incidents.” Carmona is
looking to bring areas in Axarquia such as Torre del Mar in line with standards set in practices in area like Sevilla, Castilla y Leon. The delegate is pressing to increase surveillance in health centres to help protect medical workers. Another possible option is to suspend the attacker’s healthcare for a set period of time to allow him to understand the full repercussions of his actions.
Currently in Axarquia, proven assaults carried out towards doctors carries a €300 fine and six months in prison, but Carmona insists that it’s not enough. Carmona is also concerned that it is a problem with a change in attitudes of the general public. “People believe they have the right to everything, to have their doctor prescribe whatever they want,” he explained.

Increased flu shots FLU vaccinations were at the top of the bill at a meeting held in VelezMalaga on Friday. Twenty-two experts from the medical field in the region as well as Ministr y of Health councillors discussed a plan to increase the coverage of the 2019/2020 Influenza Vaccination Campaign in Axarquia. The campaign is due to start on October 28, and will run throughout the forthcoming months, providing flu vaccines to residents. The primary goal of the increased coverage is to improve the percentage of the vulnerable population including the elderly, pregnant women and the chronically ill through additional activities and an improved marketing campaign. “These actions are fundamentally aimed at improving the image of this vaccination and with it the coverage of the population,” said the Minister of Health and Families, Jesus Aguirre.

Red Cross collection OVER the past week, the Spanish Red Cross in Velez-Malaga has been involved in an initiative to collect school supplies for children in the region. Entitled ‘Back to School Solidarity 2019/20’, volunteers from the Red Cross collected school supplies such as erasers, pencil sharpeners, rulers, notebooks, coloured pencils, pens, scissors and backpacks thanks to generous donation from the local public. In total, 153 separate donations have been received from Velez-Malaga and the surrounding municipalities of El Borge, Iznate, Periana, Torrox and La Viñuela, 96 of which came from the Red Cross’ collection point at the Eroski supermarket.

Summer success VELEZ-MALAGA has seen a successful summer season according to the town council. The councillor of Tourism, Jesus Perez Atencia made the announcement as October 1 marked the official end of the summer season. Although concrete figures are expected to be released regarding the local economy in the coming weeks, a stand out statistic was that hotels in the region maintained a 95 per cent occupancy rate, one of the highest on record. Hostels recorded an incredible 96 per cent whilst campsites experienced near capacity bookings of 98 per cent. Atencia has noted an increase of foreign travellers to the area, particularly from France, Belgium and Holland.

Commitment reaffirmed THE fourth vice president of the Diputacion de Malaga, Natacha Rivas, has reaffirmed the party’s commitment to A x a rq u i a a f t e r i n creased criticism from the PSOE. The socialist opposition has criticised PP for not investing enough financially into the region since coming to power. However Rivas has reminded the board that since 2001, the government has injected a total of €153 million into the province, averaging at a total of €19 million per year. “Never before has so much been invested in this region,”

Compared to the previous PP control, PSOE investment has increased by €10 million, and subsequently between
2015 and 2019, a further €30 million according to Rivas. “No one can deny that the investment in Axarquia has increased since the PP came to the presidency of the Diputación de Málaga,” said Rivas. The main focus on the investment has been the tourist industry in the region, with an aim to strengthen the unique qualities of Axarquia. The coastal and inland road networks have also been a key topic of cash injections as well as the new proposed ‘Lithoral Path’ which has been delayed due to the many legal hurdles put in place by the previous government.
European Tourism Fair VELEZ-MALAGA is being represented in the 2019 IFTM International French Travel Market in Paris. The exhibition is taking place at the Expo Porte de Versailles this week and is one of the leading travel and tourism trade shows in France. It is the key trade event and includes all the players in the travel sector from tour operators and travel agencies to coach operators, airlines, event agencies. Councillor Jesus Perez Atencia said: “The work on tourism we have developed in recent years must maintain a level in terms of promotion and dissemination of what is Velez-Malaga as a tourism sector, maintaining the excellent level as part of the whole of the Costa del Sol.” With their presence at the expo, the local council of Velez-Malaga is pushing out all the stops to attract tourists to the area to help the local economy.

Open air venue for Rincon THE construction of a proposed open air venue which will have the capacity to host more than 1,000 spectators and has a budget of €915,000 has been put out to tender by Rincon de la Victoria Council. Interested companies will have until October 21 to submit their offers to construct the very first open air venue in the municipality. The entire project has a deadline of five months and the mayor of Rincon, Francisco Salado (PP) has assured the works will start before the end of the year. “The works of the new auditorium will begin this year and will be available for next summer. Residents can enjoy events and outdoor shows in a modern, functional enclosure that meets the demand for this type of facilities in the municipality.” The enclosure will occupy a total area of 2,500 square metres next to the newly constructed skate park and when completed, will be home to musical and dance performances as well as theatrical performances, charity events and cultural and educational events. Councillor of Urbanism and Large Projects, Miguel Angel Jimenez (PP) explained the auditorium will complement not only the skatepark, but also the indoor swimming pool which opens this month.
Riverbeds overdue attention THE riverbeds throughout Axarquia have been given a huge cash injection as a last minute push to get them ready for possible heavy rainfall this winter. The Junta de Andalucia has released €65 million to assist with the clean up operation to remove and clear the region’s river beds of debris and foliage. Around €28 million has been allocated to improve rural-infrastructure such as arroyos and caminos with a further €20 million going towards vegetation removal. According to local media, Almuñecar’s Río Seco, Verde and La Her-
radura’s Río Jate are still severely overgrown and as such pose a serious hazard if heavy rainfall hits the region, despite a thorough clear up at the beginning of March. This week, work also began to clear the road side verges of the Cabra Road in Otivar to remove the dry and overgrown debris which has been a serious fire hazard throughout the summer. This seemingly last minute push comes after areas further down the coastline were battered by the DAMA that swept across Andalucía.

Fundraising drive FIFTEEN municipalities across Malaga and Axarquia have teamed up to raise funds for the regions’ elderly. The 2019 Day of the Banderita took place on Tuesday in v a r i o u s l o c a t i o n s across the province to raise funds to help local elderly residents combat their vulnerable situations. THE government tripartite of PP, CS and Por Mi Pueblo will decide on a new cleaning schedule to be announced this month. The deadline for the new plan is mid October, when the government, along with Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas (FCC), will decide on a new schedule of town maintenance and cleaning programmes to cover the new developments in Rincon. Councillor for Cleaning, Sergio Diaz (PP) has explained the current contract, drawn up in 2001, does not include new areas such as Victoria Park or Garces as well as other new public buildings including schools, sports facilities and the police station. At present, the cleaning of these buildings s being undertaken by staff on basic incomes. Around 25 new personnel are expected to be enlisted to take care of cleaning, repainting and waste collection with a budget of €7.2m.

VELEZ-MALAGA Council has received recognition for its commitment to workplace health. Councillor for Social Rights and Equality, Victor Gonzalez, accepted the award at a ceremony held last Thursday September 26 in relation to the council’s commitment to maintaining a high standard of workplace health. The award was given by the Official College of Psychology of Eastern Andalucia and is given to companies that show they are ‘Healthy and Emotionally Responsible.’ Víctor González, who accepted the award, explained that “an adequate working environment is very important for the personal and professional development of a person and for the correct performance of their functions, and this is one of our objectives, to promote the improvement of the working environment to also improve the emotional state of the workers.”

THE PSOE has requested that the Torrox local council joins the ministry appointed gender violence scheme. The PSOE councillor, María José González has put in a formal request to the local council of Torrox to sign a collaborative agreement with the VioGen scheme to cement the town at the forefront of the fight against gender violence. The VioGen system is a comprehensive monitoring system for cases of gender violence and was set up in 2007 by the Ministry of Interior to offer protection and legal support to victims. In a statement by González she said the PSOE asked the PP government to “take seriously the fight against gender violence and provide the municipality with all the measures needed so that we do not have to experience more aggressions against women. We know that this struggle has never been a priority for the PP in Torrox,” she continued. González claims that the PP government of Torrox must answer to where the state allocation of €3,500 has gone which was given to the party at the start of the term towards equality. She also strongly disagrees with the PP’s policies that seem to be focusing on fairs and festivals rather than bridging the gender gap in the region.

‘Sustainability’ project brings children together INSTILLING young people with the skill sets needed to co-exist and flourish will be at the heart of a new region-wide project. A series of meetings this week, which culminate tomorrow in Conil de la Frontera (Cadiz), brought together representatives from local governments, academic institutions and social organisations from Andalucía, Murcia and Portugal. The aim of the new project is to create sessions for primary school age students to learn the benefits and skills needed for fundamental issues for coexistence such as gender equality, respect for cultural diversity and sustainable management of the environment. The programme was launched by the Coglobal Association and is co-financed by the European Union and FAMIS. In its first year, students from Periana and Iznate took part in the project, and last year around 40 students from Comares and Almachar attended the sessions. “The importance of this programme is that it combines education strategies for development and participatory democracy. Its objective is to work with children and adolescents, strengthening their role as agents for global citizenship and solidarity through actions of participation in pub-

Tackling issues ANIMAL rights, social welfare and mental health were amongst the topics discussed at the recent plenary meeting. Held on Monday morning at the town hall of Velez-Malaga, councillors approved seven of the eight topics on the agenda. Among the primary discussions was the unanimous agreement to provide the necessary tools to groups and professionals in Velez-Malaga who work with people affected by mental health problems. These plans will come into force on October 10 when the world celebrates World Mental Health Day, with new training courses and activities being rolled out in the Axarquian capital throughout the year. Housing received a boost with a new commission being approved made up of members of all municipal political groups to help solve the ongoing housing crisis in the province. Councillors also pledged to improve the resources to create a specific focus group to help the region’s most vulnerable citizens, as well as the implementation of the method CES (Capture-Sterilisation-Drop) to help control the local stray cat population. Velez-Malaga has also announced the popular ‘fiesta de las Cruces de Mayo’ will achieve ‘Fiesta de Singularidad Turística Provincial’ status to further bolster the town’s cultural offerings.

On October 11 and 12 the streets of Torre del Mar will be transformed into a food and beer lovers’ paradise with authentic European cuisine mixing with the best of German ales. As a novelty this year, local establishments will be enlisted to produce a traditional German dish to supply to the festival, giving visitors a true taste of the German roots the festival is based upon. Councillor for Tourism of Velez-Malaga, Jesus Perez Atencia, announced the 2019 event on Tuesday morning stating: “This year, the event will include music, good atmosphere and typical cuisine, which for the first time will have a special role in all participating establishments.” Deputy Mayor Carmen Gonzalez added, “This is an initiative that has a very positive impact on our merchants and entrepreneurs. That is why from the Department of Tourism we believe that such initiatives have an added value, which is to involve all businesses in the area.” Accompanying the gastronomic delights will be live musical performances from the area’s best reggae, dance and flamenco artists.

‘intervene on an individual basis, through accompaniment and tutoring, with the aim of preventing absenteeism or premature abandonment of the education system.’ Students previously excluded from school will have the help of online tutors and mentoring through WhatsApp to help them gain their ESO degree and take the mid-grade entrance exams. They will also receive counselling to determine the reasons behind the exclusion and to reintroduce them into education.

The process of blood donation takes just 10 minutes in which 450 ml are collected (equating to 10 per cent of the total blood circulation of an adult person). Despite huge technological advances, the only way for hospitals to obtain blood is through the generosity of the public. The blood is carefully screened for disease to make sure it is safe. After a tattoo, you must wait four months to be eligible to donate. After surgery, the exclusion period will depend on the type of intervention. After minor surgical procedures, you cannot donate blood for seven days or until you are fully recovered. After undergoing major surgery, you will not be able to donate blood for four months. The rarest blood type is AB, present in 1 per cent of Caucasians, according to research by the America Red Cross. Blood transfusions are carried out daily in Spanish hospitals with more than 6,200 patients being given them, of whom almost a quarter are fighting cancer and a similar figure receiving transfusions during or after surgery. Brexit secretary Stephen Barclay met with Brussels’ chief negotiator Michel Barnier last Friday and afterwards said the

A no-confidence vote would have forced the Tories to abandon their conference and return to Westminster to support their leader. Parliament was swiftly recalled, but Boris Johnson was unapologetic and invited the opposition to put the question to the public with a vote of noconfidence and a General Election. The opposition see forcing Boris Johnson out of office as the only way to guarantee that legislation passed in Parliament to prevent a no-deal Brexit will be honoured. The Prime Minister has confirmed that he will never ask for an extension to the deadline and promised that the UK will walk away from Europe on October 31 with or without a deal.

Man dies on pilgrimage A YOUNG Irish man reportedly died tragically following a swimming accident in Spain. The incident is believed to have occurred last Thursday evening in a busy tourist resort in the north of the country. It has been reported that the young victim, believed to be in his 20’s, had just set out to undertake the Camino walking pilgrimage across France and Spain to Santiago de Compostela with a group of friends when the tragedy took place. The precise details of the accident have not yet been disclosed, but the young man reportedly went for a swim following a long day of walking under the harsh Spanish sun. It seems that the young victim got into difficulty while in the water and was later discovered in an unresponsive state before being brought to shore. Despite efforts to resuscitate the young man, he was tragically pronounced dead a short time later. His remains have been transferred to a local hospital ahead of a post-mortem examination due to be carried out by a Spanish coroner. The man is from Cork but also has ties in Kerry. His name is being withheld pending

Gonzalo Salgado, an investigating judge in Alcobendas (Madrid), said the plaintiffs had no legitimate grounds for objecting to Los papeles secretos de Franco (Franco’s secret papers), a documentary shown on the La Sexta television channel last November. They hoped to sue the Galician investigator Carlos Babio, whose 22 years of research into Franco’s fortune was to back the government’s claim that Franco’s summer residence Pazo de Meiras was state property. Writer Mariano Sanchez Soler, the director general of
Atresmedia Television, Javier Bardaji, several television journalists and the documentary’s director also faced prosecution. The seven grandchildren claimed that the programme insulted the late dictator Francisco Franco and repeated ‘untrue affirmations’ that ‘defamed and discredited’ them. ‘On a €95,000 salary, how could he leave more than €500,000?’ the programme asked, although the judge pointed out that Franco’s estate went to his widow and only daughter, not to them. The question was generic, said Salgado concluding that the family was not entitled to prosecute as they were not ‘directly offended’ by the ‘cited offences.’

More than 1,200 coloured umbrellas have been placed along the Plaza de la Constitución to provide shade for the estimated 20,000 visitors the town will see during its feria weekend. New planning laws Rincon Council has put into place measures to avoid the infrastructure nightmare that blighted the Parque Victoria project. DURING a plenary session held on Tuesday October 1, the local council of Rincon de la Victoria approved plans to amalgamate the construction of new developments with the relevant urban infrastructure to avoid unnecessary delays in completion of new projects. The move comes as the
Parque Victoria complex was blighted by planning issues that led to the road network linking the park together, coming years after the buildings were completed. According to the motion, any future plans brought to the town hall will have to include increased detailing of
relevant urbanisation works in order for permissions to be granted. The Councillor Delegate for Urban Planning and Large Projects, Miguel Angel Jimenez (PP), said the primary objective is to “ensure homeowners can enjoy public services on the same terms as other citizens.”

Madrid district boasts highest incomes A LEAFY luxury district of Madrid known best for its affluent and famous residents, among them top football players, is once again ranked as the wealthiest municipality in Spain. Pozuelo de Alarcon, which borders the Moncloa-Aravaca neighbourhood of Madrid City, boasts an average income of €72,899, according to Tax
Agency income tax declarations figures for 2017 published this week. This puts typical income in the fashionable district at six times above the €11,480 average in the municipality sitting at the other end of the scale, Zahinos in Badajoz. The second richest municipality in the country is Avinyonet del Penedes in Barcelona, where average income is put at €57,843,
Brutally beaten A 14-YEAR-OLD girl was left with a broken nose and bruising after teenagers from the same school in the San Blas district of Madrid beat her up at the entrance, Spanish media reported. A video, which according to El Mundo was posted on social media, showed the teenager pushed to the floor and set upon by another girl, who punched her several times in the face, while a group of fellow pupils formed a circle around them. The attack victim later needed hospital treatment for her injuries. Two weeks earlier another group of a dozen or more students tried to attack the same girl, but on that occasion her parents stepped in to defend her, Spanish press said.

THE bodies of two men have been found down a well at a feed company in Valladolid (Madrid). The bodies were found on Friday after a 112 call was made claiming a 58-year-old employee of the company had fallen down the well located on the Camino Viejo de Simancas. Seven injured in gang clash SEVEN suspected Latin gang members were injured, four of them seriously, in a clash between rival groups in Madrid on Monday night, Spanish press reported. The trouble started just before midnight when young men armed with knives and guns confronted each other on the streets of the Puente de Vallecas district of the city.
Spanish media said one young man was shot in the back and stabbed, one knifed in the eye and one was slashed on the jaw. A fourth suffered machete wounds to his back and hand. The troublemakers, all in their early 20’s, are believed to belong to sworn enemies the ‘Ñetas’ and the ‘Dominican Don’t Play.’

Scammer lacks attention
ATOCHA STATION: Where the clueless con artist was outsmarted by a group of tourists. A CON artist got more than he bargained for when he tried to scam a free ticket from tourists at Atocha station in the heart of Madrid. A local man overheard the conversation in which the scammer tried to explain to a group of tourists that he had lost his ticket and wallet and needed money to get back to Valladolid (Castilla y León). Suspicious of the man’s motives, the tourists questioned him on which river runs through the centre of Valladolid, to which he
replied, the Ebro. The actual river that runs through the town is the Pisuerga, not the Ebro. The tourists also pointed out that the AVE train to Valladolid doesn’t leave from Atocha but in fact from the Chamartin station across town. The commuter, who witnessed the interaction, wrote of his experience in a Twitter post under the username @Gauginaepicuro, adding: ‘And that, kids, is why you should pay attention to geography at school.’

Loggerhead turtle released

MURCIA has welcomed two baby loggerhead turtles, the first to be born in the region in more than a century. The turtles have only a one in a 1,000 chance of surviving into adulthood in the wild. The last known loggerhead turtle eggs to have been found on a beach in the region were in the late 19th century. But last week, two of 69 eggs buried in the sand at Cala Arturo hatched in the regional park of Calblanque off the coast line of Cartagena. The eggs, buried on July 28, have carefully been looked after by the El Valle rescue centre with the hope that 10-12 more eggs could soon hatch. A 35-year-old female released into the wild is reportedly ready to ovulate and the agency hopes she will travel back to her birthplace to lay eggs.
THE amusement park Tivoli World in Benalmadena celebrated Day of Axarquia on Saturday. The event was officially opened by the president of the Mancomunidad de Municipios of Axarquia, José Juan Jiménez along with fellow councillors and the coordinator of Tivoli World, José Luis Guzmán. “From the institution we would like to thank the people in charge of Tivoli World who have thought of our region to give promotion and to pay tribute to each of its people,” thanked Jimenez. “With the celebration of the Day of the Costa del Tropical Axarquia we can show our tourist potential, but also allow a day of coexistence between many families from different villages in the region,” he continued. For the celebration, the park opened its doors free of charge to anyone with a residency card of Axarquia, or those who collected an invitation from town halls, coastal tourism offices or in the APTA office. The pass also meant that Axarquian tourists did not have to queue, using a special entrance to access the rides and attractions. Local businesses were also invited to set up tents to promote their wares to anyone visiting the park as well as animations and live performances that were held throughout the day.

Beach cleaning
LAST Saturday a large number of people arrived at the San Francisco beach, for a day of shoreline cleaning supported by the Fuengirola Council. The intention was not only to remove the waste that manages to make its way onto the beach, but also to highlight the importance of keeping the beaches in good condition and promoting cycling. The Spanish Institute of Oceanography had a stand on the beach and gave a talk to those present about the state of the Mediterranean and international waters. The hope is that as public awareness increases, so over a period of time, Fuengirola will be able to boast that visitors may enjoy 100 per cent sustainable beaches. As can be seen in the accompanying photograph, the majority of those taking part were youngsters and it is they who will be experiencing climate change and environmental difficulties in the future. Later next month, there will be a screening in 11 towns and cities of a new film by the group Fridays for another Future of a documentary about sustainability and environmental awareness. It is aimed mainly at schoolchildren and students and this is a Canadian film Youth Unstoppable which highlights the activities taken by young people around the world who are leading the fight against climate emergency in order to save the planet and their own futures.

SPORTS enthusiasts in Adra now have brand new facilities right by the sea. The local council has opened up the El Palmeral multi sports court next to the municipal indoor swimming pool, offering the public what Mayor Manuel Cortes said was somewhere for children and adults to practise something ‘as healthy and fun’ as football, basketball and more. Financed by local authority and European funds, the €62,000 facilities are, the council said, part of a policy to make sport readily available to residents and to revitalise public areas. Speaking at the official inauguration of the court last week, Cortes explained it is not just multi-sport, but also multi-purpose: one of the sides can be taken up so it can also serve as a stage for cultural events. “These kinds of multi-functional public spaces generate social integration between local residents,” the mayor commented.

GOOD financial news for Spain is that the USbased group S&P Glob al has upgraded its opinion of the Spanish economy to an ‘A’ even though there is due to be another election in November. BREXIT JITTERS: Driving GBP exchange rates to new multi-year lows. political developments. Sterling initially plummeted when Boris Johnson announced that parliament would be sus pended for five weeks from early September. However subsequent move
ment in the pound has been large ly positive, as Johnson faced a number of setbacks and the odds of a nodeal Brexit fell. A string of upbeat UK econom ic data added to the upside in Sterling, including a robust GDP
reading. Occupying almost all the atten tion of EUR investors over the last month has been the European Central Bank and its long awaited stimulus package. The stimulus measures were ul timately received positively by markets, helping to buoy the sin gle currency going into the second half of September. Finally, trade in the US dollar has been mixed in recent weeks in response to rising fears that a US recession could be looming fol lowing an inversion in the US bond yield curve and Fed rate cut spec ulation. What do you need to look out for? UK political developments are likely to continue acting as the main catalyst of movement in the

pound as we get closer to the cur rent Brexit deadline on October 31. The upcoming EU summit in midOctober will likely be key for GBP investors, as all bets will be off if Boris Johnson fails to secure a deal by then. Meanwhile, the euro may strug gle to find support over the com ing month if German data remains in the doldrums. Finally, the US dollar may be particularly sensitive to economic data in the coming weeks, as mar kets look to gauge whether the US economy may be drifting towards a recession. LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT WITH their plastic bottles, food cartons and litter left lying everywhere in their wake, plus the output of untold thousands of vehicle exhausts as they idled in traffic jams, these recent, badly mislead young ‘climate change’ protesters have left a carbon footprint that will probably not be ‘offset’ until they reach their coming of age. This present generation has to be the most spoiled, selfcentered, misinformed bunch of youngsters the civilised world has ever pro duced. They have airconditioning in the class rooms, mobile phones and gismos, they ride in cars to school, they suck up junk food like hoovers and insist on the latest trendy outfits at all times. All of these luxury products, which they seem to think are their God given right, are manufactured or supplied by enormous compa nies that pour billions of tonnes of carbon diox ide emission into the Earth’s atmosphere. These children’s selfish attitudes and lifestyles cause far more damage to our environment than the previous generations they are so keen to accuse. Those preceding them were mobile and ‘designer’ free and took bicycles or walked to their destinations. Most had never experi enced jet travel or air conditioning and opened

Self-centred and spoiled windows when it was hot, instead of closing them. They received new shoes or clothes only when the previous attire needed replacing, ate homemade sandwiches instead of Whoppers and read books. However, in these modern day youngsters’ defence, most have of course been brainwashed and mislead by the ‘usual sus pects!’ Many of the culprits are those who laughingly profess to be ‘school teachers.’ Stringy haired trendies, who actually started the rot when the first long haired leftie ‘free thinker’ plonked his behind on his desk and told the class to call him Jon! The same leftie brigade who welcome drag acts into the classrooms to ‘enlighten’ fouryear olds, abolish winning and losing. Well this is the result. A whole generation of youngsters who not only have no respect for their elders but truly do believe they are actually superior. Ever increasing numbers of them would rather walk into the class with a knife than a ruler. I also wonder who was actually re sponsible for these utterly disruptive protests. Don’t tell me it was some precocious Swedish
16yearold. Even this young lady admitted her total surprise at the extent of the demonstrations. No, this was an idea hi jacked by adults and cal lously exploited to further their own intentions. How do I know? Well, for one thing it was planned for a weekday wasn’t it? The organisers of this particu lar exercise were well aware that had it been organised at a weekend their protesting protégés would be too busy buried in their mobiles and Xboxes or showing off their latest designer trainers to even think about actually giving up their precious spare time. As it was it was a fun day out playing legalised ‘hooky’. If it had been parents taking their chil dren out of school for the day, they could have

Also on September 23 we had the reception where the Saudi con sulate celebrated its National Day which was held at the Hacienda El Alamo in Malaga which was attend ed by the Consular Corps, civil and military authorities , businessmen and other personalities. The Saudi Consulate displayed its famous hospitality and entertained the guests with typical Saudi delica cies and gastronomy. Next week we will all attend an other traditional celebration at the Consulate of the Federal Republic of Germany for the anniversary of Ger man unification. The importance of these meet ings goes far beyond the appropri ate photo opportunities and helps us build a network of official con tacts that allows us, on many occa sions to facilitate our consular work to help our citizens, always with the premise of nonintervention in inter nal affairs of the country and of course adhering to the laws in force.

You have to remember... MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man DO you remember when you were younger, and maybe even now, people kept a diary? It was a personal record of your daily life and the worst thing that could happen is that someone read it. Your personal thoughts, things you’d done and with whom. Now most people get totally de pressed if the whole world isn’t interested in what they are doing. How things change and, in my opinion, not for the better. I was married with two kids before I got my first email! I guess it’s progress and I have to ac cept it. Everything is instant. I don’t mind my coffee being instant, but everything else needs to slow down a little. I use a computer security software com pany called McAfee. I got a notice saying it was up for renewal in two months’ time but there was nothing to worry about as it was on automatic renewal and it would au tomatically charge my credit card a certain amount. Anyway, it’s been doing some thing every now and again that was annoy
ing me. It kept changing my search engine if I added a certain update, so I decided to look around at other companies. I can celled McAfee’s automatic renewal. Well, the next day I get a warning from them about the consequences of not re newing saying emerging cyberattack techniques threaten devices worldwide and may let hackers steal your passwords, infiltrate private photos, emails, documents and exploit hardware flaws you have in your devices. This has been going on every day along with the odd special deal if I let them renew without question. All I need is a reminder that it needs renewing, not all this bombarding me with stuff. I know I need protection software, but this is not the best way to sell it to me. I don’t like this automatic renewal stuff. Recently I got a free subscription for Amazon Prime with my mobile phone com pany and I have to remember to cancel it. My car insurance does it and so does my household insurance. That one you have to do three months before or you can’t cancel it, but they don’t send you a reminder you have to remember. I wonder how many people forget they have things that auto matically renew on products they have tried and don’t use and just thought would run out after the trial period?

TEENAGE environmentalist Greta Thunberg has become one of the most influential campaigners of her generation at just 16 years old. She’s been nominated for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize in her home country of Sweden where she has been lobbying parliament in Stockholm since August 2018. Her protest transatlantic ocean voyage by yacht from Southampton to New York catapulted her onto the global stage. She says she now has world leaders eager to have selfies taken at her side and has become the face of the youth climate change movement that has resulted in children skipping school to march against extinction. Greta Thunburg, with her wholesome rosy cheeks and pigtails, has won the admiration of millions; she has also earned her place as a hate target for those who question her credibility. Petrolhead Jeremy Clarkson reminded people he still exists by branding the youngster a ‘spoilt brat.’ Others say she has been ‘groomed’ by adults who are exploiting her youth and her Asperger’s for their own ends. The story goes that she was ‘discovered’ by her PR agency when its boss Ingmar Rentzhog happened to be walking past Stockholm Parliament and saw her solo protest with a homemade sign. In fact, the PR guru, who founded the green social network start-up business ‘We Don’t Have Time,’ had met the child and her family at a climate change conference a year earlier and has now raised more than $1.5m from investors for his company. Greta Thunberg’s passion is undoubtedly her own, but her campaign is no longer solo.

Brain food WITH life expectancy ever increasing, many of us are looking for ways to improve our quality of life a n d re v e r s e a n y d a m a g e caused by an unhealthy lifestyle. Fortunately, researchers in Spain have found a way of reversing brain damage brought about by high fat diets. A study at the Jaume I University in Castella de la Plana found mice which were given high levels of fat developed damage to their ner vous system similar to that in Alzheimer’s patients, but that this was reversed when they were fed a plant hormone. This hormone, abscisic acid, was found to reduce inflammation in the part of the brain where we store memories. Researchers be lieve this effect may be caused be cause abscisic acid helps regulate
insulin levels which, when out of balance, can cause inflammation in insulin receptors in the hippocam pus, the region of the brain which governs long term memories. In flammation of the nervous system and unregulated insulin levels are both linked to Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia. The study’s author, Alberto Ribes Navarro, explained: “We have been able to prove that the expression of proteins required for the proper functioning of insulin decreases in neuroinflammatory situations induced by a highfat di et.” He added: “With the addition of abscisic acid to the highfat diet it is possible to rebalance the regu lation of these genes, even helping them reach normal levels.” Abscisic acid is found in a plant’s xylem (the stem) and is used by plants to help with growth and de velopment of tolerance to harsh
conditions. The hormone is found naturally in fruit and vegetables. A 2015 study into the acid also found it played a role in regulating blood sugar, which could in turn help de lay the development of diabetes. Ana Maria Sanchez, who headed up this latest study, shows how this new evi dence goes even further, even undoing d a m a g e caused by an un healthy lifestyle. She concluded: “We have verified how a vegetable hormone, abscisic acid, is able to counter the nega tive effects that a highfat diet has on the central nervous system.” REPAIR: Fruit and vegetables can reverse damage.
Tasty fat burning fruits WHAT you eat is just as important as what you don’t when it comes to reducing body weight. But fortunately, eating fruit is a great way to burn fat and keep cravings for sweet stuff at bay. Research car ried out by the World Health Organisation, American Heart Association and Dietry Guide lines for Americans among oth ers, has confirmed that fruit in take is positively related to weight loss. Fruits contain very few calo ries while also being crammed with vital nutrients to keep stomachs full for longer. And fruits can be enjoyed during breakfast, lunch, dinner, or as a snack for inbetween meal munchies. Studies have also shown that eating specific fruits help burn fat more efficiently. THE city of Xàtiva is located about 60kms south of Valencia, near the A7 motorway and is served by mainline trains from Valencia. High above the city, is a fantastic, well-preserved castle, which forms the highest point of the defensive walls that once encircled the early medieval city. Despite its Iberian and Ro man roots, most of the castle walls and towers preserved today are of Islamic or Gothic origin. It has been declared a Cultural Heritage Site and no visit to Xàtiva is complete without a trip around this fortress, with its stunning views over the city and its surroundings. THE UK is less than a few weeks from Brexit’s Halloween deadline, followed probably by a General Election, but just look at the choice offered by the main parties! Is there anyone near the top in any party that you’d want running the country, let alone trust? Boris (well, who really knows what he stands for?) and Corbyn who thinks he’s Goldilocks: not too Leave and not too Remain, just ‘right.’ Help! Problem is, politicians regard their ‘job’ as an allexpenses paid hobby. There may be some honest, decent, conscientious ones amongst them, but they soon learn what the ‘party line’ is. Basically, today’s politicians (many lacking realworld experience) can never say it as it is, never use common sense and hedge everything. Let alone their pe culiar way of talking whilst trying to ap

All peo ple want, generally speaking, is a safe en vironment to live in, clean water, decent food and enough money to live comfort ably. But so many politicians today simply
don’t tell the truth or deliver what those who elected them want. They have their own agenda, invariably increasing their own selfworth at the expense of those they’re ‘representing’ whilst simultane ously forcing ridiculous PC values on them. And in this fakenews PC age, nobody wants to hear the truth and so politicians are only too happy to oblige by failing to address it either by ignoring it or being ‘economical’ with it. End result: voter ap athy and so we end up not with the politicians we really need, but those we deserve. What is it about Britain that has pro duced such a run of failed leaders? Putting the fun into funerals BARRY DUKE WHEN I landed a job in Fleet Street it quickly became apparent that, were I to continue a career in the epicentre of British journalism in the seventies, I’d soon go the way of other hacks who fell off their perches long before they reached retirement. It was the lifestyle that did them in: threehour lunch breaks in the nearest boozer or wine bar, plus around 50 fags a day. I was expected to go with the flow and I did. But one day I declared enough was enough, and I asked to be put on permanent nightshift when all pubs in the vicinity were shut. I made the decision after I attended the funeral of a colleague who stum bled out of a pub and dropped dead aged 45. His funeral the first I’d ever attended was a ghastly affair. The vic
ar, who’d clearly necked far too much of the hard stuff, slurred his way through lengthy passages of the Bible, led the congregation in singing hymns they didn’t know the words to, and wound up an hour later by briefly thanking family and friends for smooth ing Harry Bridges’ path to heaven. I groaned, as did many others, for the man in the coffin Barry Smythe. And he was an atheist. I was livid, and swore I would never, ever attend a religious funeral again. I even drew up a document stipulating that my funeral was to be strictly secu lar and upbeat and listed the songs to be played. I added Highway to Hell by AC/DC when it was released in 1979. My resolve held steady, even though, over the years, a number of close friends have died. I would have attended their funerals but, as in far too many instances, the arrangements were left to religious family members, and there was no way I would set foot in a church or crematorium where prayers were chanted, psalms read and hymns sung. But when I learned that a nonreli
gious funeral was be held on Sep tember 24 for Nigel Constable, owner of Benidorm’s Com pany Bar, I made a point of attending, for I knew it would be a cheerful occa sion, especially as James McDonald, a leading Benidorm drag star, would be performing at Nigel’s sendoff. Nigel, 72, settled in Benidorm around five years ago. Before that, he ran a gift shop in Brighton. Among his many interests when he lived in the UK were grey hound racing (he actually owned one of these dogs) and buying and selling rare stamps. Although I lived in Brighton for eight years, I only got to know him after he came to Spain and took over Company. We became firm friends.

He never ceased to amaze me with his breadth of knowledge about history, politics, literature and even cordon bleu cooking and he often came up with great ideas for my weekly Euro Weekly News columns, of which he was an avid reader.
But I learned very early in my deal ings with Nigel never to get him onto the subject of Spanish bureaucracy and the unfathomable regulations govern ing local bars’ outdoor tables and chairs. His rants on these topics could induce migraines and cause one’s ears to bleed.

AST weekend was the turn of the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club, Costa del Sol chapter, to get busy and put on a most enjoyable car run and lunch. This time they started from the Restaurante El Trapiche for a trip northwards. In addition to the Big Cats there were a few welcome interlopers with a Mercedes, a BMW plus a hire car making up the party. This is what their Chairman, Philip Wray, had to say about the day:“Although the weather was overcast, and the forecast was for rain, we departed from Trapiche past Lake Viñuela and on to Periana and towards Guaro. What is so enjoyable about this piece of road is the uphill climb in the foothills of the Sierra de Tejeda with the profusion of hairpin bends and not a single car coming the other way. Not that there is no life here as we encountered a couple of substantial herds of goats wandering along the road under the watchful eye of their goatherd. The stupendous views were hidden by the low cloud so we had to imagine the panorama stretching on into the distance. Passing the summit the road straightened with a gentle descent towards Alfarnate. Although I thought my directions were clear it was fascinating to observe from the back that cars instead of going straight on as expected decided to scatter left and right. Not a disaster as most noticed their variations and after a quick U-turn rejoined the route. Alfarnate is a

pretty little village with narrow streets which follow the riverbed. Onwards to the Venta de Alfarnate on the junction of the old Malaga to Granada road. The venta is said to date from the 13th century. In 1850 a gang of 12 armed men carried out a robbery on the Malaga stage coach and there have been many famous visitors as well as assorted bandits. One of the better known was Luiz Monoz Garcia, the cross-eyed bandit from El Borge who used to frequently visit his mistress who had a husband in Alfarnate. Unfortunately the venta was closed. The only sign of life was a very affectionate grey cat who was a bit like a rash, difficult to get rid of. Instead of coffee we had our traditional cava stop with crisps and orange juice. Suitably refreshed we continued towards Zafarraya and then back down the stunning route to Viñuela. En route we stopped for a coffee at the Restaurante Fuente la Pena. What a marvellous little restaurant, very friendly with great service and superb meat roasting which persuaded a couple to buy a tray full to take home. We will be back for a lunch here. After coffee we continued to the excellent Restaurante el Pantano on the shore of Lake
Viñuela. As usual we were warmly welcomed and were served a huge lunch with a selection of cheeses followed by a very tasty starter of chorizo and morcilla; then came a selection of either a prawn cocktail or a giant chicken salad. If you had any room after all that there was a choice of multiple lamb steaks, grilled salmon or massive chicken kebab followed by desserts. All this washed down with soft drinks or wine. As Ian said during the meal, “This is the best meal I have had for 30 euros for very many years.” Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day and departed after 5.00pm being careful past the speed camera on the downhill part of the A356. The next JEC run will be on October 19. Do join us.” There is so much to do on the coast for classic and modern car enthusiasts these days, how lucky we are to have so much to do and with the weather and roads to enjoy the cars and the countryside. And, of course, always a decent lunch to finish up these events! Starting this weekend is Drive Andalucia’s first
running of their Tour Al Andaluz. Thirty cars and 60 people will set off through the Montes de Malaga on Day 1 of this fabulous seven-day Tour with a rest day in Lisbon mid-way through the event. We’ll have a full report and pictures in the next issue. Also this weekend, on Saturday, is the CCCA October run starting from El Caserio near Estepona and finishing at Venta El Garcia near Casares where a first class lunch will be expected! BIGGAR’S boot started the game, he kicked deep and targeted Hooper. Starting an early turn over Wales won the ball in hand about 30m out. The first possession and Wales pinched it, the man with 10 on his back slotted it perfectly and first points, first blood went to Wales. HaylettPetty almost broke the line on the restart, but he could n’t maintain control and the ball went to ground. Wales ad vanced, and it was a penalty against Australia, AshleyCooper was accused of being off his feet. Biggar from near the touchline took the penalty, but he slotted it just to the left. It was a letoff for Australia, 60 could have been a harsh start. On the 11th minute the scrum collapsed, Australia was accused of angling. The Welsh line out was about 20m out. They went deep and it was North on the run once again. A few phases, but Australia’s defence picked out the oneoff runners. Biggar kicked to the corner, and it was Parkes who raised above Koroi bete to pluck the crossfield bomb and place it for a Welsh try. Big gar converted with ease taking the game to 010.

Wales kicked to touch and set the lineout on the 18th minute of the match but it was pinched by Australia, a great catch from the men in gold. Wales kept the defensive runner up, and the maul went nowhere. with another turnover. It was a good scrum from Australia they won the penalty and got out of danger. Kerevi took another big carry before Foley looked cross
field with a kick, and it saw Aus tralia take their first try; 50 with the Australians getting into the flow of the game. Australia pushed wide on 26 minutes and it was George North who gave away a penalty. They played on, and it was Kerevi with another monster run he dropped the goose step and palmed off a wouldbe tackler before Biggar came across with a
crucial trysaving tackle, Australia came back for the penalty. Foley slotted it from 10m in from touch. It floated a little ugly, but it flew between the sticks to make it 810 and narrow the scoreline. Owens won a lineout feed on 30 minutes, which Wales won but it was a poor pass out of the halves and Patchell did very well to pick up off his bootlaces. The Welsh continued to probe and it was Hooper who was eventually penalised for coming in over the top. Patchell lined up for the kick and scored taking the game to 813 extend ing the Welsh lead. It was another penalty three minutes later against Australia af ter yet another foul to which Wales again slotted home to
make 816 once again increasing the Welsh scoreline. Nearing half time Genia threw a risky throw and it was plucked out of the air by Welshman Davies, and he sprinted away for the try. Patchell once again took the conversion blowing the mas sive 16point margin at half time with the score at 823. Forty two minutes into the second half Wales burst down the wing. Fifteen metres out, they set up nicely, it was passed back to Patchell, and he slotted home the dropkick. It was a great start by Wales making it 826. Straight after on 45 minutes Toomua took a half break before HaylettPetty made a burst. He looked inside for Toomua again. They were about a metre short of the line that saw desperate tryline defence from the Welsh. But it was Pocock who drew two defenders before finding the fullback outside him

once again. It was a fine flowing move ending in a great try. Toomua lined up the conversion. Straight over it went for 1526. Wales defended well until the 60th minute when Australia set up a maul, but it went nowhere. They spun wide and Hooper’s eyes lit up taking Australia a me tre short of the line, Hooper popped it under the sticks, claim ing it. It was pure muscle from both sides. Such an incredible de fensive effort from Wales, but the gold No 7 eventually found a way. Toomua with the kick scored taking the game to 22 26. Sixtysix minutes in and a penalty was awarded against Wales an infringement in the scrum and Toomua kicked well for another three points and re duced the score to 2526. Two minutes later saw a penalty against Australia as Rod da attempted a charge down but his compatriot Kepu was pinged for offside. Wales kicked to touch and were awarded an other penalty. Patchell’s kick just crept inside the post the lead extended to 2529. A dramatic game played out as Wales defended for their life but they held on well until the hooter went to confirm a fantastic victo ry!
Ireland mauled by Japan IRELAND had a bad day at the office in terms of World Cup Rugby as they lost 1912 to the hosts of the tournament Japan. Throughout the game, Japan were the more determined team as well as quicker and sharper in play which the Irish team could not cope with. The country of Japan waited in an ticipation as their team on home soil awaited the hooter on 80 minutes af ter a tremendous display of quality rugby and causing a huge world cup shock. The Irish captain Rory Best in fair ness was magnanimous in defeat say ing: “We knew how tough it was going to be. Anyone that thought it wasn’t was utterly shocked, they hadn’t seen how good they are. “We came with a game plan and we felt we were really prepared. Give credit to them, they played really well and we made a few mistakes, a few
unforced errors and were on the wrong side of the penalty count. They posed a lot of questions and we could not come up with the answers.” Meanwhile, the Japanese head coach was flying. He said: “We’re ec static about the result, we’re very proud of the players. We had a plan and have trained for a long time, we have been thinking about this game for quite a long time and obviously, Ireland had only been thinking about it for the last six or seven days. For us, it’s been a great performance. “You have to be careful before the game, you don’t want to come across too arrogant and cocky. We had a lot of belief in our game plan and knew how strong Ireland were. Credit to my coaching team, at the setpiece we were able to hold theirs. “Now it’s phase two, we have got another couple of games to go but we will enjoy tonight I reckon.”

Mercedes strike back in Russian GP AFTER his race win, Hamilton said Ferrari had the right strategy for the Russian Grand Prix despite beating them to victory at the Russian circuit. Both Mercedes drivers started the race on the medium compound tyres while Ferrari favoured the softs. Hamilton said the race showed Ferrari made the right choice of tyre. Lewis said “we knew that we were obviously on a different tyre, we put ourselves on a slightly different strate gy in that respect and I was hoping that was going to give us an opportu nity to dice and fight with them at some stage in the race.” Lewis also admitted Mercedes un derestimated how the soft tyre would be. “I think ultimately they were right because the soft tyre was much stronger than we anticipated. There
was that difference between the com pounds, so keeping up with the softs with their consistency and their speed was, oh god it was so hard, so I wasn’t expecting that. There was obviously that slight tail off towards the end where I was able to start closing the gap but it wasn’t massive chunks that I was taking out of them.” Mercedes’ strategy had been for Hamilton to run a long first stint on the medium tyres, but the Virtual Safety Car changed that when it en tered the track. “We were planning to extend for like 15plus laps or something like that, hoping that when we came back out the soft we would have a chance to be able to fight with one of them who was on a different tyre. But obvi ously, the safety car and all those things came into it,” said the Mer cedes team leader.
Ferrari dropped out with Vettel’s engine giving away, Charles Leclerc fell behind Hamilton in the safety car peri od and then dropped behind Valtteri Bottas when he made an extra pit stop for soft tyres. “Valtteri did an exceptional job be cause it’s not easy keeping the Ferraris behind and Charles has been driving so well,” said world champion Lewis. “Ultimately it’s just an incredible day for the team considering the chal lenges that we’ve had. I think this weekend we knew that we had to pull more out of this car and there was more potential there, but we didn’t know where it was. I think we pulled ourselves a little bit closer to the Fer raris this weekend and it was just enough to get ahead of them.” Race result saw Mercedes claw points also in the constructor’s cham pionship with a 12 finish over Ferrari.
World’s fastest marathon STATISTICS from the World’s Fastest Marathon in Andalucia, Spain have revealed that Anthony Karinga of Kenya ran one of the fastestever 30K marathon splits on Sunday at the so called World’s Fastest Marathon in Andalucia, Spain. Karinga split 1:25:40 through 30K on Sunday’s effort, which is faster than Eliud Kipchoge’s 30K split of 1:26:45 from his world record run in Berlin one year ago. The split is also faster than the current 30,000m world record, which is held by Moses Mosop of Kenya at 1:26:47.4. The World’s Fastest Marathon is a downhill course that starts in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and makes a sweeping, serpentinelike descent through the Sierra Nevada Mountains into the historic city of Granada. Humans are instinctively hardwired to innovate, optimise, question the impossible to push the limit. With a 100 per cent downhill route (less than 1km is with out decline), an altitude drop of 1,938 metres (6,358 feet) and a total average descent of 4.6 per cent, the course is fast. Because of the continual decent, times aren’t recordeli gible, but race organisers wanted to created a platform for someone to potentially become the first person to run 42.2K in under two hours. Karinga wasn’t successful on Sun day, his 2:09:38 was mostly a solo effort and very impres sive, but still 10 minutes from his goal of 1:59. Kipchoge will also be attempting to run under two hours for the marathon. The INEOS 1:59 Challenge will take place in just under two and a half weeks. The event has assembled the bestever cast of pacers, iden tified the optimal location, tailored nutrition and gear to per fectly suit the runner’s needs and even left the date openend ed to ensure optimal weather conditions. Kipchoge has compared his October subtwohour attempt to being the first person to go to the moon. To strive this recordbreaking time he has had to passed on world majors and the World Championships (which start tomorrow) in an ticipation of breaking this barrier. The event is set to go be tween October 1220.
