Drug raids on Mallorca MORE than 100 officers, some of whom came from the mainland of Spain, have carried out a series of drug raids at houses in Palma, Lloseta, Marratxí and Cala Rajada. As part of the anti-drug operation named ‘Crótalo,’ the authorities seized a container carrying 80kg of cocaine from Algeria. Four arrests have been made across the island so far and a house in Lloseta was raided where police found an underground cocaine lab. The operation took place on Wednesday morning at dawn and similar raids took place in Barcelona and Madrid.
CANCELLED: Plans for the Open Arms to arrive in Palma. THE Open Arms humanitarian crisis was thought to be finally drawing to a close with a Spanish Navy ship ready to set sail to collect the migrants from the boat which they have been stranded on for 19 days. Palma was ready and waiting for the migrants to arrive on the Spanish Navy ship ‘Audaz’ that was due to set sail on a three-day journey from Rota in Cadiz to the Italian island of
Lampedusa but late on Tuesday, the Government Delegation cancelled the meeting of the parties involved that was scheduled for Wednesday and halted the plan to send the ship. Instead, Italian prosecutor, Luigi Patronaggio ordered the immediate disembarkation of the immigrants in Lampedusa for humanitarian reasons. Many people and organisations in Palma had been
working hard to get sports centres on the island for the arrival of the ship. Furniture, food and clothing had been collected to be handed out by volunteers at the centres, but this will no longer be needed. Although frustrated, the volunteers have expressed their relief that the humanitarian crisis that has shone a light on the plight of these migrants has finally reached a solution.
