A BRITISH tourist on holiday in Magaluf has taken to Facebook to condemn three waiters and three bouncers at a popular nightclub in Punta Ballena for allegedly attacking him.

Callum Crickson posted pictures of his injuries and stated that the incident occurred because of a broken glass and that as he was walking away he was attacked from behind and kicked and punched.

Callum was left with deep lacerations on his arms and a broken nose.

On the Facebook post Callum stated ‘three waiters three bouncers and left with deep cuts and a broken nose, all because of a dropped glass so I tried to walk away and do the smart thing and get hit from behind and kicked while I was on the floor slicing my arm open.�

It has been reported that one of the attackers has since come forward to apologise and the others suspected to have been involved have had their contracts terminated with the nightclub.

Light up FOLLOWING the recent project to install €1 million of new lights at the Bellver Castle, Palma City Council have put plans in place to fit new lights to the Cathedral and the Almudaina Palace with work due to commence in November.

New yacht RAFA NADAL’S new catamaran has been revealed as a 24-metre Sunreef power catamaran with a price tag of €5.5 million. The luxury yacht boasts a jacuzzi, large terraces, luxury interiors and a garage to store jet skis.

Good luck HOLLYWOOD actor, Antonio Banderas, has wished his brother, Javier, good luck in the Copa del Rey regatta which is currently taking place in Palma. The video message was recorded by the actor and shared on his social media before the big race.

Anti-tourist graffiti GRAFFITI aimed at tourists has appeared on the abandoned bunkers on the idyllic Es Trenc beach.

Early morning walkers and tourists heading to the Caribbean-like beach were shocked to see the hateful slogans sprayed on to the side of the old machine gun nests.

‘Tourist you’re not welcome,’ ‘Tourist, murderer of the island,’ and ‘Tourists go hell’ are among the phrases that have been tagged.

The Guardia Civil and the Local Police in Campos are looking for the culprits who will be charged with vandalism at the very least.

The mayor of Campos, F r a n c i s c a P o r q u e r, e x pressed on social media her ‘immense sadness and indignation.’ She added that this act of vandalism ‘threatens the heritage of Campos.’

Teenager attacked

This is not the first time that anti-tourism campaigns have been launched on the island. Across Palma, similar slogans appeared s c r a w l e d i n g r a ff i t i o n tourist attractions, shop fronts, and on the streets.

The campaign allegedly stems from a small group of Mallorcan people who believe that the island is being ruined by mass tourism and that prices are being increased making it impossible for them to sustain their lifestyle.

Another motivation is the environmental impact that tourism has on the island.

A clean-up operation will be launched to remove the graffiti from the bunkers on Es Trenc.

GRAFFITI: Appeared overnight.

A 16-YEAR-OLD teenager has been violently attacked by a group of youths while leaving a concert in Playa de Palma.

According to the parents who filed the complaint the attack happened in the Ses Fontanelles area. The victim had approached the group of youths to defend his sister who had been harassed by them, but was subjected to punches and kicks to his face and body.

The victim suffered a double fracture of the jaw and contusions all over his body and was robbed during the attack. Police are trying to identify the perpetrators.

Palm tree ONE of the palm trees which line the Paseo Maritime in Palma has been cut down by tree surgeons. The tree was looking in poor condition and was a health and safety risk as it could have fallen at any moment and cause damage or injury to property and pedestrians.

Touch down TV presenter, Caroline Flack, touched down in Palma airport last week for the Love Island final. Caroline announced her trip on Instagram and photos were taken of her at the airport looking in high spirits. Recording for the final took place over the weekend and was aired on Monday night.

EMT buses THE transport authority EMT has announced that eight new buses will be joining its fleet to increase the frequency of buses from August. The buses will be added to routes 5, 7 and 28 and will feature better air conditioning, USB ports and better facilities for deaf passengers.

It’s a wrap THE winners of Love Island were announced on Monday with Greg and Amber taking the crown and the £50,000 prize money. The remaining contestants were spotted celebrating the end of the show in Mallorca before flying home.

VENERATED: Santa Maria de Africa is the patron saint of Ceuta.

Patron saint THIS picture of a shrine to the Virgin Mary comes from the Spanish enclave of Ceuta which is venerating her African image, their patron saint, on Monday.

Catholics there celebrate Santa Maria de Africa (Saint Mary of Africa) every August 5. The festival typically sees devotees lay flowers in for the Virgin in Ceuta’s Plaza de Africa.

There is also a procession throughout the city which sees locals throw flowers from balconies. The parade is followed by fireworks.

The Santa Maria de Africa celebration has its origins not with Spain but with Portugal. Prince Henry the Navigator, who became famous for launching early Portuguese exploration efforts, sent an image of the Virgin Mary to Ceuta in 1421.

The image was sent with a message which said: ‘I send you an image of the Virgin who is very devoted to me.’

The image of the Virgin Mary evolved into a representation for Africa, similar to other incarnations worshipped by Catholics including

the Virgen del Carmen and Virgen del Rosario.

The image was also co-opted by Ceuta for official use and was named the enclave’s patron saint in 1654.

Ceuta was in Spanish hands by this time, having remained under the country’s control after a union between it and Portugal dissolved in 1640.

Santa Maria de Africa is often depicted weeping as she mourns the plight of children on the continent according to Catholic tradition.

Attempted robbery

Police in Palma

A MIDDLE-AGED man entered the lobby of a wellknown hotel in Playa de Palma and attempted to rob it at 2am on Tuesday morning.

Dressed in a wig, head-to-toe in black and wielding a gun at the receptionist, the man reportedly tried to force the receptionist to hand over cash, but dropped the magazine out of the gun when confronted with other hotel workers.

When the security guard arrived, alerted by the shouts of the receptionist, the robber gave up on the robbery and left with nothing but a bruised ego.

Staff were left shaken by the event and gave their statements to the management of the hotel and the police who immediately launched a search for the suspect. Surveillance cameras are being collected in the vicinity in a bid to identify him.

THE mayor of Palma, José Hila, has announced he will be hiring 120 new police officers for the Local Police force in the capital.

Thirty-two of these officers will be promoted internally and the rest will be new recruits.

The job offer will go live in September and training and examinations will take place as soon as possible after that. The intention is that the new police officers will start work throughout 2020. Most of the police officers will work as neighbourhood police and will enforce municipal order. The increased police presence will hopefully serve to reassure residents in the wake of reports of slightly higher crime rates in the summer season.

The mayor also highlighted in his statement that it has been over 10 years since Palma advertised for or appointed new police officers.

ETA in Mallorca - 10 years on AT 1.50pm on July 30, 2009, a bomb exploded under a Nissan Patrol of the Guardia Civil in Palmanova.

The two police officers that were getting into the car, Carlos Sáenz de Tejada García, 28, and Diego Salvà Lezaún, 27 were both killed instantly.

ETA claimed responsibility for the horrible crime and had previously launched attacks in the Balearic Islands, but had never killed anyone until this incident. Ten years on from the event and the police are still no closer to identifying who was responsible for the attack and it is unlikely that any further clues will be unearthed after such a long period of time.

The families have urged those responsible to come forward or for those with information to notify the authorities but to this day they remain without answers.

The only solace the families have is that they could receive justice indirectly when the brains behind several attacks are punished. The Audiencia Nacional has four ETA leaders who have already been prosecuted for crimes against humanity in custody. The four were gang leaders from October 2004 and could be further prosecuted for attacks that were carried out.

Deia ranks second THE picturesque town of Deia on the north of the island has come in second as the most exclusive and expensive municipality in Spain, according to a property report by Idealista.

With prices averaging €5,342 per square metre, the Mallorcan town is second only to Formentera where prices are substantially higher at €7,401 per square metre. The president of the Association of Real Estate Developers of the Balearic Is-

lands (Proinba), Luis Martin, states that Deia is a town ‘with a unique real estate product and a high market price.’

The fact that the Balearic Islands is at the forefront of this real estate ranking, with the top five most expensive places in Spain all located here, is thanks largely to the huge levels of foreign investment on the island with investors favouring coastal areas or areas near the Serra de Tramontana. The investments that are made are in

the millions which greatly raises the prices above average.

The study was completed by comparing prices in the most exclusive locations in each of the 17 Spanish autonomous communities.

In a time of economic uncertainty around the world it is encouraging to know that the Balearic Islands, and Mallorca in particular, is still attracting huge foreign investment.

Nursery teacher trial THE owner of a nursery in the Son Gotelu district in Palma faces a one-year prison sentence for allegedly shaking a two-year-old girl under her care last year.

The incident occurred on May 29, 2018 when a neighbour close to the nursery reportedly recorded the woman grabbing the toddler by the arm and aggressively shaking her before throwing her to the ground and slapping her.

The video then shows the woman leaving the girl on t he gr ound and wal ki ng away.

The girl suffered an injury to her arm which took several days to heal.

The 43-year-old Spanish national is alleged to have behaved ‘without any kind of patience or consideration,’ according to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

As well as the likely sentence, the woman will also be banned from caring for children for two years. The nursery where the incident occurred has been closed down.

“We ar e goi ng t o do everything possible so that the full weight of the law falls on this person,” said Miguel Angel, the father of the young girl.

He also expressed his gratitude to the woman who r ecor ded t he vi deo and shared it on Facebook.

Watch stolen

Whirlwinds in Mallorca WITH the mercury reaching temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius in the centre of the island, whirlwinds were spotted passing through the inland towns of Cosititx and Sineu and other parts of the Pla de Mallorca.

Neighbours reported that at approximately 2.30pm last Thursday, clouds of dust and dirt were scooped up by the wind and created the unusual phenomenon.

The whirlwinds caused no damage to property as they passed through uncultivated land in the centre of the island.

As the earth is so dry due to the high temperatures it created the perfect conditions for the whirlwind and gave it the appearance of a mini tornado.

RESCUE: Six people were successfully transported to dry land.

Alcudia sea rescue SIX people were rescued from the coast of Alcudia after their boat ran into difficulty.

The small boat was overcome by the waves and water got into the vessel which caused it to sink last Thursday.

managed to escape unharmed and began to swim to land, but ran into further difficulties when they reached the shore as they had no shoes on and were unable to climb up the sharp rocks.

The rescue team determined

that the only way to rescue the individuals was to extract them with a harness from a helicopter.

After six trips, all individuals were successfully transported to dry land unharmed.

AN Irishman was the victim of a robbery yesterday in broad daylight as he strolled along the popular shopping street of Jaime III in Palma.

Two men on motorcycles approached the man and one of the suspects twisted the man’s arm and removed the watch worth approximately €45,000.

The man was walking with his two young daughters at the time.

A witness attempted to stop the thieves as they drove away by kicking the moped, but were unsuccessful.

THE Cancer Support Mallorca team was delighted to receive the proceeds of the Andy Beckett Memorial Golf Tournament from his daughters, Nicole and Kirsty, this week at Hooties bar in Palma Nova.

In excess of €1,630 was raised from entrance fees, a raffle organised by Gaynor Enright, a coffee morning organised by Hooties landlady, Tracey Jury, as well as contributions from Katie’s Beauty Salon and Hairdressers in Magaluf.

The tournament was won by Rob Hosier, aka Bob the Bed who was presented with a trophy and the winner’s jacket.

The money will help the Cancer Support team provide much needed services for people and their families affected by cancer including advice, translations, wigs and cosmetic aids, transport and support for hospital appointments. All Cancer Support is provided free of charge.

BUSY AIRPORTS: The number of passengers visiting Mallorca is up.

Record passengers THE Balearic Islands recorded record numbers of passengers arriving through the airports of Mallorca, Menorca, and Ibiza over the weekend with 4,503 flights scheduled.

According to Aena, 724,105 seats have been sold to the islands with Palma Airport receiving the highest traffic. Some 2,855 flights arrived in Palma carrying 480,000 people to and from the island through Son Sant Joan.

Ibiza had 1,095 flights scheduled with 159,682 passengers and Menorca made up the rest with

553 scheduled flights and 83,764 passengers.

The majority of this traffic came on Saturday to all three airports with 1,674 scheduled flights.

The increase in passengers is due mainly to the school holidays starting in other countries in Europe, with families arriving to start their summer holidays on the islands.

Many local residents also choose August to escape the island during the busiest period and head to cooler places in Europe which adds to the departure numbers.

By Joe Gerrard SPAIN’S acting prime minister will be weighing his options carefully after failing to secure lawmakers’ backing for his return to government.

Pedro Sanchez lost both of last week’s investiture votes after the leftist Podemos refused to join a coalition government with the left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE).

The acting prime minister lost the second and final investiture vote after 155 Congress of Deputies members voted against him.

He secured the backing of 124 lawmakers, but Podemos’ abstention deprived him of the numbers needed to win the simple majority, more yeses than nos, required to govern.

Acting Deputy Prime Minister Carmen Calvo accused Podemos of demanding ‘virtually the government’ after they asked for control of ministries including Labour, Science and Finance.

Weighing options

STUCK: Sanchez faces no clear way forward. to fail to manufacture an excuse to approach the conservative Partido Popular (PP) and the centrist Ciudadanos.

The countdown has now begun for Sanchez to get Podemos’ support with a new offer or to call a fresh election.

Sanchez has until Monday September 23 to hold another investiture vote or call a snap poll.

PSOE sources have said the acting prime minister is keep-

ing the door to talks open but the party is also being geared up to fight another election if necessary.

Each way forward for Sanchez and PSOE is fraught with complications. Reopening talks with Podemos may lead to greater concessions or it could land the acting prime minister back where he started, without a deal and facing defeat in Congress.

A fresh election would also be a gamble. PSOE is currently polling ahead of its rivals, but the gap between it and the PP is closing (see Poll Tracker).

If Sanchez called an election, the PP and Ciudadanos could cast him as the architect of Spain’s political impasse and could win seats at his expense or collectively defeat PSOE. King Felipe is set to meet with party leaders to find a way forward. Although he may encourage the PP and Ciudadanos in particular to try and reach a deal with Sanchez, their political priorities might trump the king’s wishes.

PP and Ciudadanos leaders Pablo Casado and Albert Rivera respectively may reason their chances are better going into possible elections in opposition rather than throwing their lot in with PSOE.

No-deal ‘very real’

By Joe Gerrard BRITAIN’S government has ratcheted up preparations for a no-deal Brexit since its new prime minister took office little over a week ago, with one minister calling the prospect ‘very real.’

Michael Gove wrote in the Sunday Times that the government was now ‘working on the assumption’ Britain would leave the EU without a deal on Thursday October 31.

“We still hope the EU will change their minds, but we must operate on the assumption that they will not. Nodeal is now a very real prospect and we must make sure that we are ready,” Gove wrote.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson appointed Gove the new Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. The role does not traditionally have fixed responsibilities attached to it,

but Gove has been tasked to oversee the government’s nodeal planning as part of the position.

Gove wrote in his article: “Planning for no-deal is now this government’s number one priority.

“We are optimistic about the future but we are realistic

about the need to plan for every eventuality.”

He also wrote the government would continue to push ‘intensely’ for a new Brexit settlement with the EU. Johnson’s victory in the Conservative leadership contest was always expected to be the harbinger of a hardening Brexit stance from London.

But the pace of Johnson’s recalibrating of the government’s approach has shown he is committed and willing to allow a no-deal.

New Chancellor Sajid Javid echoed Johnson and Gove’s line in an interview with British media in which he pledged an at least extra €1 billion for no-deal preparations.

The government is also reportedly drawing up a no-deal emergency budget for early October to have ready if necessary.

Logistics worries AN association representing Spanish haulage companies has called for measures to ensure transit between Spain and Britain continues in the event of a no-deal, with Britain taking 8.1 per cent of total lorry shipping according to Fenadismer.

Plant plans CARMAKER Vauxhall’s owner PSA is planning to halt production at its Ellesmere Port plant in Cheshire, where about 1,000 people work, as British Prime Minister Boris Johnson ramps up Brexit no-deal rhetoric and planning.

More staff BRITAIN’S Competition and Markets Authority has taken on hundreds more staff ahead of Brexit, rising from 593 workers in June 2016 to 807 last month, because of the ‘additional responsibilities’ leaving the EU will create.

Within weeks I had gone to a press conference with British Consul for Southern Spain Charmaine Arbouin.

By the summer of 2018 I had been given the opportunity to report for all our six papers, giving me the chance to learn more about areas popular with

expatriates and other places further afield. I spoke to and interviewed several expatriates for stories.

I was able to hone the skills I was taught at university while being able to view Spain, my new home, from a unique vantage point.

I was also able to bring my skills to bear on one of my pet subjects, politics. I was fortunate to be reporting when history was made with the first successful no-confidence motion against a sitting Spanish government, which I covered.

About a year ago I was given responsibility for the Costa del Sol edition of Euro Weekly News, one of the company’s biggest titles.

Around the same time Euro Weekly News owner Michel Euesden offered me space to cover Spanish politics and Brexit.

In my first job I was given the chance to choose stories, chose my own angle and report on my own terms, a generous vote of confidence in me.

Those responsibilities opened more doors, including being interviewed by the BBC and The Guardian.

I have been able to cut my teeth as both a local news reporter and as a political correspondent.

But the time has come to move on. And now it is time to pass on the mantle to a new reporter.

Donating blood in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. Anyone who has lived continuously in the UK between 1980 and 1996 (a minimum of one year) will not be able to donate blood in Spain due to the risk of transmitting mad cow disease. Similarly, there are restrictions if you have received a blood transfer in the UK. However, each region may have different rules about donation. Call the donation helpline on 935 573 500. Alternatively, visit www.donorsang.gencat.cat to find out if you are eligible.

If you are eligible, you can give blood at your local hospital, or via the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja) at one of their clinics, or in one of their mobile units. You can check dates and locations by visiting www.donarsangre.org.

A donor card is not necessary to give blood. On the first visit you will have to provide DNI, NIE, passport or a driving licence. If you are already registered in the Blood Bank, you only need a donor card or a document with your name and surname.

The process of blood donation takes just 10 minutes in which 450 ml are collected (equating to 10 per cent of the total blood circulation of an adult person).

Despite huge technological advances, the only way for hospitals to obtain blood is through the generosity of the public. The blood is carefully screened for disease to make sure it is safe.

After a tattoo, you must wait four months to be eligible to donate.

After surgery, the exclusion period will depend on the type of intervention. After minor surgical procedures, you cannot donate blood for seven days or until you are fully recovered. After undergoing major surgery, you will not be able to donate blood for four months.

The rarest blood type is AB, present in 1 per cent of Caucasians, according to research by the America Red Cross.

Special needs pupil ‘forced to list disliked traits’ THE father of a 10-year-old boy with special needs has told British media his son was made to list the reasons classmates did not like him.

Damian Lightoller said his son, who has traits of autism, ADHD and a host of other conditions, brought a drawing home at the end of the school year. He was studying at Allenton Community Primary School in Derby.

The picture featured a drawing of him surrounded by phrases he was made to write including: ‘stop shouting’ and ‘stop annoying us.’

The words ‘Be happy, not sad’ were written at the top of the page. A drawing of the 10year-old in the centre was accompanied by a thought bubble with the words: ‘How can I get the other children to like me?’ written inside.

Lightoller said: “My son’s mentor sat him down and asked the other children why they didn’t like him, and tried to tell him to change

those things.

“My son sought help from a teacher, and rather than discipline the other children for bullying, the mentor blamed the victim and said ‘well you need

to not do this’.”

School headteacher Jon Fordham said the session was ‘restorative justice,’ according to Lightoller. The school itself declined to comment.

Minimum wage increases plan

THE Spanish government will take into account economic developments including market movements, consumption data and purchasing power when deciding on future minimum wage rises, a government official has said.

Secretary of State for Economy and Business Support Ana de la Cueva said the government needed to take decisions on the rate ‘prudently.’

It comes as the government plans to increase the minimum wage to €900 a month. Previous efforts to raise it to €1,200 failed to pass along with the rest of last year’s draft budget.

Firms reveal half-year profits PUBLICLY-LISTED companies in Spain have published their earnings for the first six months of this year, with many recording year-on-year falls.

Firms in the banking sector reported mixed results. CaixaBank made €622 million in net profits, beating the €510 million analysts forecast in July, but still earning 52.1 per cent less year-on-year.

The company said staff restructuring which incurred one-off costs of €978 million gross hit their earnings.

In manufacturing, the Acerinox steel maker earned €69 million, 50 per cent less than in the first half of 2018. The firm had to grapple with ‘very competitive’ market conditions, it said.

SPAIN’S corporate law regime is better than many of the world’s economies for small businesses but regional improvements are needed, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has said. The OECD’s SME and Entrepreneurship Outlook 2019 report stated Spanish law was god when it came to getting companies access to financing.

But access to public procurement and the cost of infrastructure, much of which is the responsibility of autonomous communities, let the country down. Small companies’ lack of access to skilled workers also needed improvement, the OECD found.

Purchase go ahead THE European Commission has given the go ahead for US investment firm Carlyle to buy a stake of between 30 and 40 per cent in the Cespa petroleum company for at least €4.2 billion.

Savings push LOSSES: Nissan is axing 12,500 jobs.

Nissan job cuts SPANISH workers at Japanese car maker Nissan’s plants are set to be the first to go in company plans to axe some 12,500 jobs worldwide.

Nissan said some 600 workers at plants in Cataluña would retire early while 150 have already left the company voluntarily.

Nissan plans to reduce staff numbers in two phases.

Some 6,400 workers will have left by the end of this year while 6,100 will go in 2022 and 2023.

The car marker is scaling back production by 10 per cent up to 2022. Nissan’s second quarter net profits were €53.1 million, a fall of 94.5 per cent year-on-year.

TELEFONICA telecommunications company president Jose Maria Alvarez-Pallete has told analysts that cutting costs to improve its balance sheet remains the ‘priority’ after firm figures showed it had reduced its debt liabilities for the ninth consecutive quarter.

Bond offer OIL company Repsol has issued €750 million in bonds over the next eight years which is being handled by banks including CaixaBank, Santander, Citigroup, Natixis, Goldman Sachs, HSBC, Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan and UniCredit.

Company worker spending survey THE average Spanish worker earned about €23,003 before tax last year, according to a survey from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) on worker costs to businesses.

The INE’s Annual Labour Cost Survey found annual gross salaries increased by an average of 0.9 per cent compared to 2017 levels.

It found the average worker costs firms around €30,883 a year after deductions of about

€202 from administrations to promote jobs and training are taken into account.

The net annual cost of the average worker in 2018 was 1.1 per cent higher than the previous year, INE figures found.

The survey found almost €412 is spent on welfare contributions per worker per year. Work expenses accounted for almost €209 a year, with €192 spent on severances and €82 on training.

New UK government and central bank outlooks keep currency markets on edge

Euro EUR/GBP: Unmoved at £0.89 EUR/USD: Down from $1.13 to $1.11 The euro (EUR) spent much of July with mixed movement, as its rival the US dollar (USD) recovered and the shared currency outlook became increasingly gloomy due to concerns about the eurozone’s economy.

Eurozone economic activity, especially in the manufacturing sector and especially in Germany, has been showing signs of prolonged weakness and slowdown. Hopes for the eurozone economy to be rebounding from the slowdown seen earlier in the year have largely faded.

Due to these lasting economic fears, markets have become more convinced that the European Central Bank (ECB) will ease monetary policy before the end of the year.

policy decision this week. However, ECB President Mario Draghi kept markets from getting too jittery, as he was less gloomy about the economy than many had suspected.

Still, investors will keep a close eye on eurozone data over the coming month, as it may indicate what

stimulus measures the ECB will adopt when it meets in September.

Pound GBP/EUR: Unmoved at €1.12 GBP/USD: Down from $1.27 to $1.24 Once again among the worst-performing major currencies, the pound (GBP) continued to be throt-

tled over the past month, by fears that a no-deal Brexit was becoming an increasingly plausible outcome to the long Brexit process.

As expected, hard Brexit advocate Boris Johnson won the Conservative Party leadership contest by a wide margin and became Britain’s new Prime Minister.

Many fellow ‘Brexiteers’ have been selected for Johnson’s government cabinet, making economists anxious that a worst-case scenario no-deal Brexit will indeed be more likely.

Brexit fears have only been part of the pound’s reason for weakness, as recent UK data continues to show signs of economic activity being weakened by uncertainty. This has caused Bank of England (BoE) interest rate cut speculation to rise as well.

UK politics and the Brexit plans of the Johnson government are like-

ly to remain in focus for the pound.

US Dollar USD/GBP: Up from £0.78 to £0.80 USD/EUR: Up from €0.87 to €0.89 Following brief periods of weakness in June, the US dollar (USD) has been able to benefit from broad weakness in both the pound (GBP) and euro (EUR) to put in solid gains for much of July.

While Federal Reserve interest rate cut bets have risen significantly, with analysts expecting multiple US interest rate cuts over the next year, weakness in US dollar rivals has prevented the currency from suffering too much.

Of course, with the Federal Reserve’s July policy decision due to take place next week, the US dollar could be in for big movement in the coming weeks depending on the action and tone the bank takes.

Bank hiring row goes on SANTANDER has accused a prospective CEO of engaging in unethical behaviour by recording conversations between himself and senior company staff.

The bank claimed Andrea Orcel, who was set to be Santander’s new CEO until it withdrew the offer, recorded conversations during the final phase of negotiations for the position.

Bank president Ana Botin said a final contract for the role, which carried a salary of €17 million, ‘never materialised.’ His recording of conversations showed ‘dubious ethical and moral qualities’ which were not befitting the CEO of a bank, the president added.

It comes after Orcel threatened to take Santander to court claiming they rescinded on their offer leaving him jobless. He is seeking more than €100 million in compensation from the bank. Botin said Orcel’s hiring process was conducted in good faith and carried out according to ‘solid’ corporate governance standards.

Orcel is attempting to pin his case on an offer letter he signed for the company. But Botin said the letter had no legal validity.

Pension cost rise THE Spanish state spent almost €9.7 billion a month on pension payments from the start of July, an increase of more than 7 per cent year-on-year government figures show.

Data from the Labour Ministry showed the amount allocated to pension spending represented a new record.

It comes as the number of pensioners grew by 1.2 per cent from July 2018 to this year, reaching more than 9.7 million.

July is the 42nd consecutive month in which pension costs have risen. The average retirement pension was around €1,138 a month as of July 1, almost 5 per cent higher than the previous year.

The average general pension was about €991 a month when payouts for permanent disabilities, widowhood and orphans are taken into account.

Retirement pensions account for almost two thirds of the more than 9.7 million total at more than six million.

Almost 2.4 million widows’ pensions are paid out, more than 959,220 go to recipients with permanent disabilities, while more than 341,330 go to orphans.

Government figures showed eight regions spent more on pensions than the national average. The top spenders were

Bank to avoid negative rate CAIXABANK has said it will not apply negative interest rates to private deposits despite ‘strong pressure’ on the company to bring them in from the current economic situation, CEO Gonzalo Gortazar said.

Railway cash THE Spanish government has earmarked €95.8 million for maintenance projects across its non-high speed rail network for the next three years, with works due to fix signalling, detection systems and other devices.

INCREASE: The Spanish state is spending more on pensions. the Basque Country with more than €1,230 a month, Asturias with almost €1,170 and the Madrid Region with more than €1,160.

Extremadura, Galicia and Murcia all spend less than the national average with around €826, more than €841 and more than €873 respectively.

Pensions continue to be a contentious issue for the Spanish government and

retirees. Proposed increases of fractions of a percent from the previous conservative Partido Popular (PP) government sparked mass demonstrations across the country.

Pension costs continue to climb as Spain’s population ages, meaning more people will receive payouts, but there will be fewer taxpayers supporting the system.

Firms probe THE National Commission for Markets and Securities (CNMC) has launched an investigation into 13 companies which operate Spain’s highway network over allegations they engaged in anti-competitve practices, including forming cartels and collusion to distribute contracts among themselves.

Not only did I watch with glee and satisfaction, reruns of the destruction of Corbyn’s bunch of seedy, glum faced and utterly miserable losers, by a buoyant Boris and a rib-tickling Rees Mogg - who managed to put forth arguments and positive ideas to the House in a language that the opposition couldn’t even understand, leave alone find credible answers for (Diana Abbott is still Googling up most of the words as we speak!), but I also discovered I had won yet another £15 million in a lottery; a game of chance that I have no recollection of, but is nevertheless kindly being held for me by the American Ambassador to Nigeria who wants to arrange a meet to hand it over.

He will be arriving in the UK next week and has requested I send my address and phone number, so he can ‘deliver the package in person!’ Before I do that, I must urgently (‘before time will be against us’) send $280 to the cargo registration officer, a Mr Nwabundo Iscanyi Benjami in Lagos Nigeria.

A weekend of highlights

CROMER PIER: Quintessentially British. served golfing trip to Honolulu! To complete my weekend, I actually found myself the recipient of gale force winds at the end of Cromer pier!

I know, I know, what a rich and abundantly varied life he must lead I hear you say. Well, in

fact, that is precisely how it panned out this weekend. After attending yet another tedious, but necessary specialist appointment in the UK (Don’t worry folks there’s life in the old canine yet!), I took up the kind invitation of some old friends to join them in a couple of days of frol-

ics in the depths of the beautiful Norfolk countryside. One of the weekend highlights was the summer variety show on the historic and quintessentially British, Cromer pier.

Picked up by a coach (what else!) with the delightful title of ‘Marriots Chariots’ prominently displayed on its side, the highly skillful ‘charioteer’ wove us through the meandering byways and hedgerow flanked ‘low ways,’ till we soon found our selves savouring the sight of the crashing waves and slate grey briny of our Cromer seaside destination.

Naturally, in true British tradition, the crippling Sahara record- breaking conditions had changed overnight and the wind, although not cold, was whistling across the bay, whipping up the surf and, once again in true British fashion, completely undeterring a whole family of swimmers and surfers frolicking happily on the stony grey and swirling foreshore.

The end of the pier show was utterly delightful with all the rich British content and humour one would expect from this most local of traditions. Surrounded exclusively by the accents of dear old GB and even regaled at one stage by the National Anthem, my pint glass positively overflowed. A million thanks to all concerned.

I am reminded of this story whenever I hear of yet another move by the Balearic tourism industry that is the equivalent of shooting oneself in the foot. This time it is the ban on building sand castles on some beaches.

by Calvia Council in May of this year which include drinking fountain water, pouring dirty water under trees and picking flowers from city streets or parks.

It is almost as if Mallorcans don’t want

tourists to visit their island... Surely not!

The slogan ‘Tourists Go Home’ daubed on a wall in Palma is not the most welcoming message for visitors on their walking tour of the city and I am told that a plane flying along Palmanova beach recently trailed the banner ‘Tourists Out.’

Mallorca is home to one million people and welcomes over 10 million visitors every year.

Some of the locals are fed up sharing their island (albeit briefly) with the very people who create the prosperous environment which they enjoy.

In the Balearics, tourism contributes roughly 45 per cent of the regional GDP. The infamous Tourist Tax charging visitors up to €2 for an overnight stay on the island is estimated to generate €60 million a year for the Balearic government coffers. But heck those tourists are so annoying let’s get rid of the lot of them!

If Mallorcans keeps this up the islanders can have their rock back to themselves and enjoy returning to traditional professions such as fishing and olive picking. I am sure holiday resorts in Turkey and Tunisia would be happy to offer alternatives.

Snubbing the very people who bring wealth and prosperity to your economy is comparable to figuratively picking up a Smith & Wesson and aiming squarely at your metatarsals.

OUR VIEW Good plan, bad cause A BUS and police escort service put on for young women attending a festival in the Basque Country is welcome, but also a damning indictment on Spain’s gender violence issue.

Santurtzi Council and the Biscay Province town’s Local Police joined forces to bus young women in and out of the Carmenes de Santurtzi fiesta.

Santurtzi Council culture spokesperson Danel Bringas said it aimed to avoid young women being targeted by ‘threats, propositions, unpleasant insinuations or violent situations.’

One comment from a user was chillingly telling.

She said: “After a certain time of night this all gets crazy.

Anything could happen to you.”

The last part underlines how pervasive the dangers facing women are in Spain. The beast of machismo, or gender violence culture, continues to prey on women and its appetite for victims appears boundless.

Recent government figures show 35 women died in proven or alleged gender violence cases so far this year, the third worst figure in a decade. More than 1,000 have died since records began in 2003.

Santurtzi’s scheme and others are welcome, but all they do is treat the symptoms and not the problem.

Educating young men out of sexist and violent mindsets and treating addictions would go a long way. But ultimately society must be radically altered and the economy transformed to stop it manufacturing the poverty which spawns so much of the causes of the gender violence scourge.

Being honest will bring you peace JORIS PLU HONESTY. We can write hundreds of books about this one single word. We all want honesty, to be honest ourselves or other people to be honest with us.

But on the other hand it frightens us a lot. Because pure honesty is right in your face. It is about how people feel. How they see things. And then just say it. No filter. Honesty can hurt. A lot.

It can also heal. Make one feel free. At peace.

John Lennon once said ‘Being honest may not get you many friends, but it will always get you the right ones.’

And he was a man who loved peace in his life. For him, for the whole world.

Of course, honesty is also something very personal. We all see and feel things differently, we have different backgrounds. So being honest can be very tricky. As long as we are respectful to others and speak with integrity, not having the intention to hurt someone, I believe

that being honest is the best thing we can do. Ever. What do you think?

Not easy at all. Since we know or sometimes even do not know how the other person will react. So therefore, we are most of the times not really honest, or just a little

honest. And we put a big smile on top of it while saying the honest things. To soften the brutal honesty which can be so painful for the other party. Is this a good way of doing it? Or maybe most of us already do it like this? For as long as we remember, pure honesty is not easy.

What we can do, if we are not fully honest today towards others and also not to ourselves, we must train this step by step, day by day.

Just be a little more honest next time. And the next one. Just practice it. Rome was not built in one day. Changing a behaviour takes time and effort.

And like Lennon has said. You will maybe lose some people in your life, but the real ones will stay.

With fresh produce, local handicrafts and plenty of delicious treats, markets in Mallorca should be top of the list of things to do for both residents and tourists alike. What better way to meet the locals, support local businesses, and integrate in a town than by buying straight from the source? Most of the markets take place between 9am and 3pm with Pollensa being the largest and the markets in Santa Maria, Inca and Sineu amongst the most popular.

In the Old Town of Palma you will find the Mercat Olivar which, similar to Santa Catalina Market, sells fresh produce and local delicacies. Visitors to this market can enjoy a glass of cava and some oysters at the cava bar inside and then pop to the Mercadona upstairs for your general shopping. Interestingly there is a restaurant inside that will cook anything that you buy in the market or Mercadona to order - definitely beats cooking yourself!

Foodies looking for a market experience should head to the San Juan Gastronomic Market in S’Escorxador.

This converted slaughterhouse offers open, communal dining with over 20 full time food stalls serving everything from tapas to Thai, ponchos to Peking duck. There are activities and events throughout the year to entertain the crowds and often live music is played at the weekend as people dine.

Whatever it is you are looking for from a market, Mallorca really does have something for everyone. Be sure to visit a market inland for a true Mallorcan experience, sip cañas and dine your way through the Gastronomic Market at least once.

Katy and Orlando take a hike KATY PERRY and boyfriend Orlando Bloom have been doing something a little more dangerous than strolling the Ibiza promenades on their holiday.

Orlando, at 42, nine year’s Katy’s senior, was spotted with a bloodied ankle after hiking up a local peak.

The couple had decided to start their weekend with some serious exercise, but Orlando was perhaps not suitably dressed for the occasion.

He was photographed sporting casual clothes and light shoes rather than hiking boots.

Despite his injury, Bloom appeared to be chirpy.

What a fine old mess!

MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I SAW on the news that there is a scumbag American financier called Jeffrey Epstein being accused again of having sex with underage women. OK, let’s get this clear there is no such thing as ‘an underage woman.’ She’s a child!! And he is a paedophile. If he is guilty, bang him up and throw the key away instead of repeating the pittance of a sentence he got in 2008.

I got a letter from my insurance company the other day informing me that I had got a speeding fine. It said: ‘We are contacting you because we have located the publication of a notice related to the vehicle registration number xxxxxxx.’

The information in this notification is as follows: and it then goes on to tell when and where and how much the fine was. I ‘phoned them and asked how they knew about it before I did. They told me that these notices go into this publication if Trafico do not get a response from the second letter they send to the owner of the vehicle.

Well you know where this is going. I never got a second letter. In fact, I never got a first letter. I find this strange because there is someone on our gate 24/7 and Correos know that even if he’s away for a few minutes, they only have to wait a short time.

I don’t believe I was sent anything. The person on the ‘phone informed me that this is not unusual. I was fortunate. I paid it straight away and managed to get the maximum discount on my fine.

Now not every company gives this service, so I was lucky. I was relating this story to my mate and he told me a horror story about how he had a fine that he never knew anything about and he finished up with a horrendous fine.

The first thing he knew about it was when his bank account was embargoed and even though he protested, they were not interested and insisted that the letters had been sent. I have had similar experiences here with letters from the town hall or other official places where it’s something to do with a payment.

I mean, they would never tell porkies about these letters just to get a bit of extra dosh would they? Or would they? Let me know if you have had any experiences of fine letters going missing.

AT this time of year, air travel’s uppermost in many people’s minds. Not always a pleasant experience what with queuing, flight delays, threats of strikes etc.

But let’s look at another problem: reclining seats in economy class. You know, when the guy in front must have loosened an extra bolt in the seat base - because he’s effectively in your lap. And bang! There go your laptop, drinks and food! On long haul, ideally you should only be able to recline seats an hour or so after the main meal has been served. Problem sorted!

But if there is a problem, why not speak out (politely) rather than sulking and taking a picture for social media - which everyone seems to do nowadays? But symptomatic of the ‘snowflake generation’ that seems to say to itself: I have a problem, but rather than fix it I’ll post a bunch of messages declaring how ****** off I am, hoping that the silent indignation and smiley faces will somehow make it all go away...

Flying used to be fun, but I’m talking about the ‘80s and even earlier. Since then, flying’s become increasingly punishing as the seat cushions in cattle class have become thinner

AIR TRAVEL: Not always a pleasant experience. like some absurd time lapse torture. So, thinner seat cushions, less leg room due to shorter seat pitch and skimpy food service plus lengthy waits on the tarmac have all eroded what used to be a reasonably convenient and pleasant form of travel.

Some time ago, a neighbour decided to finally give up flying after a lifetime of it.

Dreadful airports, dreadful security, dreadful overcrowding, strikes, delays, screaming kids, harassed parents and centre seatmates who hog both armrests and glare at you ominously if you dare to object. So, he’s now committed to staying in the UK or travelling elsewhere

only by ferry or trains. He swears he won’t ever miss boarding a plane again.

Too true, especially if Ryanair pilots vote to strike this summer and dig their, err, chocks in for the, err, long haul...

A better system for proxies Some years ago, our Community of Property Owners had the same problem regarding proxy votes as your earlier questioner. When residents realised that their wishes were not necessarily carried out by the proxy holder, discontent arose. When I became president, I instructed our administrators to include all Agenda items on the proxy form. Voters could then put a tick against each item to vote Yes/No/Abstain. This ensures that their wishes are respected. This system is normal practice among large corporations for their AGM, particularly for electing committee/board members. We have used this method for many years and it works.

Visuel CONSULAR MATTERS THE presentation given by a group of Danish artists called VISUEL is a special occasion, but if this presentation also takes place in one of the most special towns on the coast, such as Nerja, my consular duty is transformed into a personal pleasure, a welcome relief from running my firm on the Costa Del Sol. Starting on July 18, 2019 the work of a dozen Danish artists has been exhibiting in the Nerja Museum under the title of ‘Underground’ in triptych format.

The title of the exhibition was very appropriate for two reasons, firstly the artists drew from the deepest of their souls and this is reflected in their different artistic

expressions. Secondly the exhibition is in the room that is located in the basement of the Nerja Museum, which makes the works more intimate and closer.

When Caroline Krabbe, one of the artists of the exhibition, asked me to give a speech at the exhibition’s opening ceremony, I rearranged my schedule as this was an event that I wanted to attend and be part of the moment. A summer night in Nerja and enjoying art is one of the most attractive offers I receive as Trade Delegate for Andalucia and Extremadura.

Caroline belongs to a family of reputed Danish artists who have been based for many years in Frigiliana. She belongs to a family that combines in a wise and discreet way two creative universes, the Danish and the south of Spain.

Releasing equity in your home IN Britain, there is a scheme called ‘Equity Release.’ This is a means of retaining use of a property, which has capital value, while also obtaining a lump sum or a steady stream of income, using the value of the house as collateral.

This scheme is generally deemed a mortgage-related product and normally arranged through financial companies and is regulated by financial law.

The deal is that the incomeprovider must be repaid, with interest, at a later stage, usually when the homeowner dies and the property is sold.

Such deals are subject to numerous conditions and may not be available for non-UK house purchases nor non-UK residents.

This is called a ‘bare ownership’ sale.

Under this scheme, the price a homeowner receives is reduced according to the age of the seller, with the discount calculated based on how many years they are likely to continue to live.

For example, for a seller who is 70 the sale price could be reduced by 40 per cent, for

one who is 80 there could be a 30 per cent discount, and for a person 90 years or older, the discount could be only 20 per cent off the normal sale price of the property.

A healthy market INDICATORS and statistics report that key cities and tourist hot spots are enjoying a fresh property boom, fuelled by interest rates that are still near historic lows, as well as good employment figures.

However, they point out that record numbers of overseas buyers were attracted to Spain in 2018 and the potential for capital growth in the medium term remains, provided you can buy at the right price for the current market.

The report emphasised that they see the recovery restricted to the prime locations, which for the overseas market means the Mediterranean coasts, the Balearics and the Canaries.

I would have laughed at that, but for the fact that the morons chose to give chase in their vehicles. John told me to calm down. ‘They’re not gonna catch us with beat-up old Ford vans and tractors,’ he correctly pointed out.

This car delivers unprecedented performance for a production model. Figures such as 1,000 cv, and a weight-to-power ratio of 1.57 kg/cv, and 390 kg of downforce at 250 km/h not only put the SF90 Stradale at the top of its segment, but also mean that a V8 is the top of the range model for the first time in the marque’s history.

Acceleration is really impressive with official figures reporting 0-100km/h in 2.5 sec and 0200km/h in just 6.7 seconds.

COMEBACK: Lorenzo has inked in Silverstone.

Lorenzo’s British date JORGE LORENZO is planning on making his MotoGP comeback at Silverstone for the British GP on August 25.

Jorge Lorenzo and the Repsol Honda Team have agreed it is best for Lorenzo to miss both the Czech and Austrian rounds to continue his recovery and avoid any further risk of injury.

He suffered fractures to two of his vertebrae during the Dutch GP. Having spent the summer break working on his recovery, Lorenzo’s condition has improved but he is still in some pain and his movement on a bike remains restricted.

Silverstone has been set as his new objective for returning to

riding for the Repsol Honda Team.

In his place, Stefan Bradl will again ride the RC213V in Repsol Honda Team colours.

The German had been scheduled to wildcard at the Czech GP, but will now fill in for Lorenzo as he did at the Sachsenring.

This time was measured at approximately 300 milliseconds.

They compared this breach to that of a false start with a potential advantage and therefore opted to give both drivers a 10-second stop-and-go penalty, which equates to 30 seconds added to each of their race times.

Responding to the stewards’ verdict, Alfa Romeo Te a m P r i n c i p a l F r e d e r i c Va s s e u r s a i d : “ I t i s e x tremely disappointing to have both cars penalised and pushed out of the points in what had been such an exciting race. The situation arose during the laps we spent behind the Safety Car ahead of the standing start: we suffered a dysfunction of the clutch that was beyond our control and we will further investigate the issue.

S t a r t i n g s e c o n d , Ve r stappen and Red Bull mastered the strategy, taking a gamble to switch to mediums first, then realis-

ing their mistake and diving back into the pits. The Dutchman pitted five times in total, but made the right calls at the right time to emerge at the head of the field.
