TEN workers of the public nursery of El Faro de Torrox will be fired this week as a change in management leaves many more jobs in danger. The employees were originally hired by a private firm more than 10 years ago to run the centre, however recent takeovers of management by the Junta de Andalucia have left the workers unemployed. Workers unions representing the nurseries condemned the actions and called for re-evaluation of the employees’ positions. The take-over was originally delayed for one year to allow negotiations to avoid dismissals, however talks fell through and the action will take place this September. It is thought the actions by the Junta and the Board will affect around 73 more employees across Almeria, Chipiona, La Linea de la Concepcion (Cadiz) and Sevilla.

Arson arrests A 25-YEAR-OLD was arrested by the Local Police of Velez-Malaga early Saturday morning after allegedly committing his third act of arson in consecutive nights in the town of Torre del Mar. According to Local Police sources the man was apprehended after the third fire was started in a paper and cardboard container in the coastal town. The previous Friday night, waste containers on the Plaza de la Santa Cruz de VelezMalaga burned and flames spread to an abandoned patch of land, causing damage to much vegetation and three cars parked in the area. Thursday night saw a similar incident after containers were set alight along Calle Aceituneros. The man is currently under police custody and awaiting questioning.

Drug busts on Axarquia coast by James Warren ALMOST 40 people have been arrested this past month in three separate drug operations, enlisted to stop the import of hashish from Morocco into the ports of Velez-Malaga and Rincon de la Victoria. Along with the arrests, 1,400 kilograms of hashish have been seized.

The first operation, the Guardia Civil awaited the arrival of a smuggling vessel on the beach of Velez-Malaga. Based on intelligence the authorities arrested 17 people who were waiting on the arrival of the boat, however the boat fled offshore. The second bust came as officers surprised a group of 10 people carrying out

a transaction of 1,200 kilograms of hashish on the beach. The final arrests were made after Operational Services Centre (COS) learned of two suspicious vessels travelling towards the port of Rincon de la Victoria. They were intercepted and seven more were arrested in connection with the operation.

Baviera Golf saved THE Baviera Golf resort in Velez-Malaga was given a lifeline this week as it was brought out of insolvency t hanks t o a t akeover by Spanish investors. A m eet i ng was hel d on Monday (July 29) overseen by the Councillor for Enterpr i se and Em pl oym ent , María José Roberto, to sign over the company to Chakar International Investments, SL. The signing over means that the company will not close its doors at the end of July as was planned, and there will be a strong possibility that many jobs will be recovered. Baviera Golf entered administration at the start of the year thanks to an econom i c downt ur n i n t he property and tourism market. However the signing over breathes new life into the renowned resort. Councillor Roberto explained: “It is fantastic to be able to keep Baviera Golf open and, above all, not losing so many jobs and maintaining an important space dedicated to leisure, sports and tourism in our municipality.”

Motril talent THE final round of the ‘Quiskilla Motril 2019’ talent competition took place on Saturday at the Parque de los Pueblos de America. Musicians competed for a €1,000 cash prize and a spot performing during the Festivities on August 15.

Beach rugby LAST Saturday, Poniente Beach hosted the 11th edition of the Beach Rugby Tournament in the town of Motril. Six teams competed, the tournament eventually won by reigning champions ‘Natachoc Beach Rugby.’

Council pay rises THE Coalition Government of Velez-Malaga held a meeting on Tuesday (July 30) to authorise pay increases to its board members and affiliates. Members of the PSOE and GIPMTM have agreed the figures which will see pay rises across the team, including mayors Antonio Moreno Ferrer, David Vilches and first deputy mayor, Jesus Perez Atencia. Currently the mayor of Velez earns €60,000 gross per year after he lowered his salary back in 2015. This will increase to €63,837, earning him an average of €3,500 per month. Full time councillors will receive €40,000 per

year which sees an increase from €36,316 in previous years. The budget also included the highest rise in commissions paid for the attendance of Local Government Board members. It rises from €350 per meeting to €600. The Council explained: “The proposal demonstrates an evident moderation, containment, justice and balance, adjusted to the responsibility that implies working for a large town like VelezMalaga and the need to provide the entire corporation with material and human resources for the benefit of citizens.”

Brick Beach project THE City Council of Velez-Malaga has held an open meeting with the resid e n t s o f Ve l e z t o d i s c u s s and answer any questions on the new Brick Beach project. The meeting was held by the mayor of Velez-Malaga, Antonio Moreno Ferrer, and gave the public a chance to ask any questions or raise any concerns they had with the new European led project. Pr esent at t he m eet i ng was Mayor Ferrer, along with Councillor for Business and Em pl oym ent , María José Roberto and technical representatives of some of the collaborating boards of the project. Ferrer offered reassurance of the importance and sus-

tainability of the project. “We have all the guarantees of success after having performed all the necessary analyses and assessments by experts in the matter.” María José Roberto emphasised the significance of the project. “Brick Beach was one of 16 projects sel ect ed f r om 206 appl i cations from 28 European states, where only two Spanish projects were sel ect ed, one of t hem f r om Velez-Malaga .” The €4 million European Brick Beach project aims to recover the beach areas of t he Mezqui t i l l a ar ea of Vel ez- Mal aga by usi ng waste from construction projects, treated at a brand new plant to be built in the area.

Award for Julen’s rescue team T H E C ity C o u n c il of A s turia s awarded the mining rescue team th a t as s is te d w ith th e re s c ue of two-year-old Julen the Gold Medal of Asturias in a ceremony last Friday. The award was presented by the p re s id en t o f th e P rinc ipa lity, Adrián Barbón for their efforts and

bravery in the rescue mission. During the ceremony, the current president also awarded the former president of the Principality, Vicente Álvarez Areces ‘Tini’ a posthumous Gold Medal for his services to the principality and a gesture of affection from the community.

Vicente Álvarez Areces passed away on January 17 suddenly from a suspected heart attack. He was 75 years old. In an interview with local journa lis ts , th e pr esi dent al so announced that he will enlist four new vice councillors in his new cabinet, one of them will be the

spokesperson of the government and one wi l l al so r epr esent t he vice-ministry on the subject of justice. Barbón will meet the King of Spain this week during the king’s tour of the country to meet with newly elected presidents.

Street open CALLE ANCHA in the town of Motril opened last week after renovation work took place to resurface the old cobbles that lined the street. The work was delayed for a week due to a technical problem, but the area is now completed with new road surfaces and lighting.

VENERATED: Santa Maria de Africa is the patron saint of Ceuta.

Patron saint THIS picture of a shrine to the Virgin Mary comes from the Spanish enclave of Ceuta which is venerating her African image, their patron saint, on Monday. Catholics there celebrate Santa Maria de Africa (Saint Mary of Africa) every August 5. The festival typically sees devotees lay flowers in for the Virgin in Ceuta’s Plaza de Africa. There is also a procession throughout the city which sees locals throw flowers from balconies. The parade is followed by fireworks.

The Santa Maria de Africa celebration has its origins not with Spain but with Portugal. Prince Henry the Navigator, who became famous for launching early Portuguese exploration efforts, sent an image of the Virgin Mary to Ceuta in 1421. The image was sent with a message which said: ‘I send you an image of the Virgin who is very devoted to me.’ The image of the Virgin Mary evolved into a representation for Africa, similar to other incarnations worshipped by Catholics including

the Virgen del Carmen and Virgen del Rosario. The image was also co-opted by Ceuta for official use and was named the enclave’s patron saint in 1654. Ceuta was in Spanish hands by this time, having remained under the country’s control after a union between it and Portugal dissolved in 1640. Santa Maria de Africa is often depicted weeping as she mourns the plight of children on the continent according to Catholic tradition.

Nerja tax increases

THE councillor for Social Rights and Equality in VelezMalaga, Víctor González has held meetings this week to reaffirm the council’s commitment to supporting the social services sector in the city. On Monday he visited the ANNE Axarquia to inform them they would be receiving the proceeds from the ‘Night Route of the Perseids’ to be held on August 7. The mayor of the city, Antonio Moreno Ferrer also held talks on Monday to discuss a possible collaboration between the City Council and the Association for the Fight against Renal Diseases to organise fundraising and awareness events across the city. In recent weeks, councillor González has visited numerous centres across the city and will continue to do so periodically. “We continue to do these visits to show the closeness and support on the part of City Hall,” he explained.

A PROPOSAL to increase property tax by the Ministry of Finance has been rejected by the mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo, much to the support of the residents of the town. The proposition was submitted by the Delegation of Economy and Finance of Malaga to bring cadastral levels up to a market value of 1.03. However the City Council has rejected the plan, stating that the proposed increase will raise IBI to unacceptable levels. The plan proposed an increase of 3 per cent to the Receipt of the Property Tax for residents, however the mayor stood steadfast in his campaign promises of lowering property tax. “There are currently no circumstances that justify this increase,” explained the mayor. “Our commitment is to reduce the IBI, as we announced in the election campaign, to place it at the level prior to the increase caused by the previous tripartite government,” he continued.

Q for dog beach THE Torre del Mar dog beach has been awarded the ‘Q for Quality’ award by the Tourism Quality Department. This beach is the first dog-friendly beach in Andalucia to be awarded this prestigious accolade. The Head of Tourism, Jesús Pérez, planted the flag to represent the award this Tuesday which is now flying proudly for all dog walkers to see. The Torre del Mar beach is 4,000 sqm of sand in the Mortar area and was made a dog-friendly beach in 2016 to the delight of local residents who enjoy using the services nearby. It is hoped that more dog-friendly beaches will receive this accolade if dog owners take responsibility for their pets, so that everyone can enjoy the beaches.

Cave concerts come to an end

NERJA CAVES: Won’t host any more show or concerts. IT has been decided by the government of Malaga and the president of the Cueva de Nerja Foundation, Maria Gamez, that there will be no further shows or concerts held in the Nerja caves in order to protect them. It has been decided by various experts that work

in the Nejra Caves that holding concerts or events inside is damaging to the natural monument and that its conservation is of the utmost priority. This year the caves celebrate 60 years since they were discovered at the same time as the 60th anniversary of the inter-

national Festival of Music and Dance which will make this year the last performance inside the caves. A new, purpose-built auditorium has been developed outside with double the capacity and concerts will be held there.

Arsonist on the loose NEIGHBOURS in Algarrobo fear that there is an arsonist on the loose in their town after four vehicles were torched. Residents started to panic as they heard a loud explosion in the Algarrobo area, near to Lidl supermarket. Initial reports suggest that some individuals in a green car ‘threw an object similar to a Molotov cocktail which caused the explosion.’ Local Police are now searching for the perpetrator and locals urge them to increase surveillance in the area as they fear that there is an arsonist on the loose and the crimes could escalate if he is not caught soon. A 24-year-old boy was arrested in nearby Velez for setting fire to several bins in the historic centre, although it is thought that the incidents are unrelated.

Nerja cuts THE town hall in Nerja and the Department of Urban Planning and Housing has unblocked 100 requests to build and develop in the area. Previously the department was bogged down with bureaucracy and was working inefficiently. A large number of cases were submitted, but files had seemingly been abandoned and therefore delayed. The head of the department, Nieves Atencia, said that the situation was not helped by the fact that no municipal architect was hired to replace the previous architect after he retired leaving the department with nobody at the helm. The move will be welcome news to developers that invested time and money into projects which have been delayed by the tangle of red tape they faced when waiting for the legal documents and permits.

Boy found FERNANDO GONZÁLEZ, 16, has been found safe and well in Cartama after a social media campaign was started to find him. The search intensified after it was revealed the boy suffered from ADHD and severe diabetes.

FOUR out of five budget investments focusing on employment generation, social action and the balance of territories have been approved by the Town Council of Velez-Malaga. The General Budget of Velez-Malaga’s councilmen and affiliates has been set at just over €1 million whilst the total budget set out for city plans is €13.5 million. Employment was addressed by the approval of two separate programmes, one for direct employment generation and the other for more spending in the set up of job creation schemes, leading to

more jobs and more labour inclusion. One of the main benefactors of the new budget is the proposed plans to maintain and restore the ‘Hermitage of San Sebastian.’ Rights to the historical site will be passed over to the Consolidated General Inventory of Assets and Rights to take over the preservation of the site. The proposed works on the European Brick Beach plant were also discussed in length and assurances were reiterated regarding the environmental and logistical impact the project will have in the area.

Salobreña leads the way in culture THE coastal town of Salobreña launched its annual Festival Trends campaign this week, bringing a week of cultural events, music, cinema, talks and exhibitions. The mayor of Salobreña, María Eugenia Rufino, announced the presentation of the 28th edition of the Festival Trends being held in the coastal town from Tuesday (July 30) until tomorrow (Friday, August 2). The festival, organised by the Town Council of Salobreña and the Diputacion de Granada in collaboration with the Commonwealth of Municipalities of the Costa Tropical will close on August 2 with a performance of indie rock group, Los Planetas on the esplanade of the Sports Pavilion. Tuesday saw a performance of pop singer Annie B Sweet and a talk by the singer and journalist Miguel Ángel Bargueño as part of the ‘power of women in rock music’ programme. The screening of the documentary ‘Women’ by Coque Malla, took place yesterday (Wednesday) at the Villa de Salobreña Auditorium. This evening there will be a performance by the Guadalupe Plata band who will present their new album at 10pm at the Villa de Salobreña Municipal Auditorium.

Climate change fight ALMUÑECAR has vowed to continue its fight against climate change and environmental issues by joining the Green Flag Campaign for recycling. The councillor for the Environment, Luis Aragón, attended the presentation last week. The launch was held by the Provincial Council and Ecovidrio, an organisation that is dedicated to the recycling of glass products. The summer campaign is aimed at encouraging proper recycling practices amongst the retail and hospitality vendors in four separate municipalities in the region. Hotel and bar/restaurant establishments account for a total of around 85 per cent of the glass items used in the area, making it a viable sector to concentrate the campaign. T h e p ro v i n c i a l d e p u t y o f E n v i ro n m e n t and Animal Protection, María del Carmen Fernández, explained “it is a collaborative campaign that aims to fight against climate change and for the protection of the coast.” Actions taken by the new initiative include 450 on-site training visits in 147 different establishments, 72 new recycling bins, 19 new specialised containers and an increase in the frequency of collections.

Puppet fest PLENARY SESSION: Was held to discuss new salaries for the board members.

Salaries in Nerja AN Extraordinary Plenary session was held last week to discuss new salaries for the board members, including mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo. The council comprised of members of the tripartite government PSOE, IU and EVAPodemos were able to come to an agreement over salaries thanks to the abstention of Vox and Citizens representatives Miguel Armijo and

Manuel Carrillo. Approved in the reform was a 19 per cent increase in the mayor’s salary bringing it up to €58,372, putting it at the limit set by EU law. Several additional positions were added to the Council roster with wages ranging from €25,000 to €34,000. The mayor’s salary increases have caught the attention of opposition party members.

A spokesman of Adelante Nerja-Maro, José Juan Aido, has assured that they see their new salaries through, but that they do not share the massive increases of salary for the mayors of the government and the positions of trust. However a spokeswoman for the PP Gema Garcia has insisted that the wages are lower than other similar sized constituencies in the region.

LA HERRADURA has paid tribute to popular character of the Andalucian and Spanish puppeteer scene ‘Peneque’ with the unveiling of a sculpture in the town’s Plaza de Independencia, coinciding with the celebration of the 21st Puppet Festival, on until Sunday.

THE Society of Friends of Culture (SAC) has written an open letter to Velez-Malaga council to undertake urgent action to improve the wasteland surrounding the Phoenician site of ‘Los Toscanos.’ The site, located just north west of Torre del Mar is a key site rich in archaeological history and has long been a destination for the society to conduct educational activities. However in recent years the site has been overlooked by the local council and has become over-

THE schedule of activities in honour of Our Lady Immaculate has been announced and will take place between August 2 and 4 in Chilches Veleña. Councillor of Fairs and Festivals, Lola Gamez, and the deputy mayor of Chilches, K Hipolito Gomez, in collaboration with the Association of Housewives of Chilches announced that the traditional fair will take place in honour of their patron saint as well as live performances by Los Copone, and ‘Hombres G’ tribute band. There will be other activities such as children’s games, dance performances, Zumba and magic as well as plenty of local food serving up the

very best of the region’s rich cuisine. “We want to invite everyone to attend the Chilches fair and especially thank all the neighbours who are involved in organising this event,” said Lola Gamez. The festivities will draw to a close with a large paella, a multitude of performances and the procession of ‘Our Lady Immaculate’ followed by a spectacular firework display to end the event with a bang. BRITAIN recently had the second hottest day on record with temperatures reaching 37 degrees. This caused mayhem back in the UK as travel, work and everyday life was disrupted by the sudden burst of heat. Although Euro Weekly News sympathised with the levels of discomfort people must have experienced, it made us think about soldiers. The troops who don’t complain about the heat when they’re fighting for us in 120 degrees, 5,700 miles from home while carrying 70lbs plus of equipment. So we posted on Facebook to put our opinion out to the public. It seemed that many people agreed with us! Anyone who has lived continuously in the UK between 1980 and 1996 (a minimum of one year) will not be able to donate blood in Spain due to the risk of transmitting mad cow disease. Similarly, there are restrictions if you have received a blood transfer in the UK. However, each region may have different rules about donation. Call the donation helpline on 935 573 500. If you are eligible, you can give blood at your local hospital, or via the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja) at one of their clinics, or in one of their mobile units. If you are already registered in the Blood Bank, you only need a donor card or a document with your name and surname. The process of blood donation takes just 10 minutes in which 450 ml are collected (equating to 10 per cent of the total blood circulation of an adult person). Despite huge technological advances, the only way for hospitals to obtain blood is through the generosity of the public. The blood is carefully screened for disease to make sure it is safe. After minor surgical procedures, you cannot donate blood for seven days or until you are fully recovered. After undergoing major surgery, you will not be able to donate blood for four months. The rarest blood type is AB, present in 1 per cent of Caucasians, according to research by the America Red Cross. Blood transfusions are carried out daily in Spanish hospitals with more than 6,200 patients being given them, of whom almost a quarter are fighting cancer and a similar figure receiving transfusions during or after surgery. Spain taken to court over 112 failures SPAIN, along with Croatia , the Czech Republic, Germany and Greece have been taken to EU courts in Brussels for ‘breaking the rules of emergency number 112, unjustified geographical blocking and cyber security rules.’ The European Commission (EC) opened a case against Spain for multiple breaches in the 2002 guidelines for emergency num-

bers, especially in regards to usage for disabled and the impaired. The Spanish Committee of Representatives of Persons with Disabilities (CERMI) brought light to the shortcomings in the 112 system during a statement released earlier in the year, and the news that the EU will be ‘forcing’ Spain to act has come as a welcome announcement. “The emergency telephone

number 112 is not accessible to people with sensory disabilities,” explained a spokesperson for CERMI. They explained they feel the reasons for the breaches in regulations are due to the Civil Protection (PC) “considering the accessibility of the 112 a minor matter.” Brussels has given the countries two months to respond to the allegations and are warned that action may be taken.

Spain’s Junior Eurovision entry chosen TWELVE-YEAR-OLD Valencian Melani Garcia has been chosen to represent Spain in the upcoming Eurovision Junior contest. Garcia was tearful as she was told the news during an interview with presenter Julia Varela, on La 1’s morning television show As of Today. “Going to Eurovision is a thing I’ve always dreamed of since I was little. I can’t believe it,” Melani said. She will travel to Gliwice (Poland) on Novem-

ber 24 to compete in the contest, the first time Spain has been represented for 13 years. Garcia is no stranger to the spotlight, she was recently crowned champion of TV talent show La Voz Kids on Telecinco in 2018 with an outstanding performance of ‘Nessun Dorma.’ Her TV success allowed her to release two songs and she has appeared in ‘We Love Queen.’ She is also been part of the musical ‘We Love Queen’ where she performs Queen’s operatic hit ‘Barcelona’.

THE WEEK IN POLITICS By Joe Gerrard SPAIN’S acting prime minister will be weighing his options carefully after failing to secure lawmakers’ backing for his return to government. Pedro Sanchez lost both of last week’s investiture votes after the leftist Podemos refused to join a coalition government with the left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE). The acting prime minister lost the second and final investiture vote after 155 Congress of Deputies members voted against him. He secured the backing of 124 lawmakers, but Podemos’ abstention deprived him of the numbers needed to win the simple majority, more yeses than nos, required to govern. Acting Deputy Prime Minister Carmen Calvo accused Podemos of demanding ‘virtually the government’ after they asked for control of ministries including Labour, Science and Finance. Podemos’ head of political action Pablo Echenique claimed PSOE intended talks MY name is Tara Rippin, I am the Editorial Manager at Euro Weekly News and I am looking for somebody who could fill the big and competent shoes of journalist Joe Gerrard who is moving on after 18 successful and rewarding months at head office. Weighing options

STUCK: Sanchez faces no clear way forward. to fail to manufacture an excuse to approach the conservative Partido Popular (PP) and the centrist Ciudadanos. The countdown has now begun for Sanchez to get Podemos’ support with a new offer or to call a fresh election. Sanchez has until Monday September 23 to hold another investiture vote or call a snap poll. PSOE sources have said the acting prime minister is keep-

ing the door to talks open but the party is also being geared up to fight another election if necessary. Each way forward for Sanchez and PSOE is fraught with complications. Reopening talks with Podemos may lead to greater concessions or it could land the acting prime minister back where he started, without a deal and facing defeat in Congress.

A fresh election would also be a gamble. PSOE is currently polling ahead of its rivals, but the gap between it and the PP is closing (see Poll Tracker). If Sanchez called an election, the PP and Ciudadanos could cast him as the architect of Spain’s political impasse and could win seats at his expense or collectively defeat PSOE. King Felipe is set to meet with party leaders to find a way forward. Although he may encourage the PP and Ciudadanos in particular to try and reach a deal with Sanchez, their political priorities might trump the king’s wishes. PP and Ciudadanos leaders Pablo Casado and Albert Rivera respectively may reason their chances are better going into possible elections in opposition rather than throwing their lot in with PSOE.

Backlog growing POLITICAL deadlock resulting from protracted talks to form a new government is causing state business to pile up, with posts unfilled and long-standing legislative issues stalling. The acting left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) government’s mounting unfinished business includes a budget for this year. The failure of the government’s earlier draft budget, which was effectively vetoed by pro-Catalan independence lawmakers, triggered April’s election. The 2018 budget drawn up by the previous conservative Partido Popular (PP) budget was carried over to this year. But delays to forming a new administration could also affect accounts for 2020. Pension and housing reform are also among the items of unfinished business. The government has yet to iron out details for state housing while pension rises have not been signed off after three years of talks. A handful of high-level government positions also remain unfilled, including the post of Territories Minister which has been vacant since Meritxell Batat became the Congress of Deputies president. Foreign Minister Josep Borrell is also set to take up a new role with the European Commission, raising the prospect of Spain being without a top diplomat. The National Intelligence Centre (CNI) is also without a director.

I applied for and was offered my first journalism job at the paper while travelling and started in January 2018. Within weeks I had gone to a press conference with British Consul for Southern Spain Charmaine Arbouin. By the summer of 2018 I had been given the opportunity to

report for all our six papers, giving me the chance to learn more about areas popular with expatriates and other places further afield. I spoke to and interviewed several expatriates for stories. I was able to hone the skills I was taught at university while

being able to view Spain, my new home, from a unique vantage point. I was also able to bring my skills to bear on one of my pet subjects, politics. I was fortunate to be reporting when history was made with the first successful no-confidence motion against a sitting Spanish government, which I covered. About a year ago I was given responsibility for the Costa del Sol edition of Euro Weekly News, one of the company’s biggest titles. Around the same time Euro Weekly News owner Michel Euesden offered me space to cover Spanish politics and Brexit. Those responsibilities opened more doors, including being interviewed by the BBC and The Guardian. I have been able to cut my teeth as both a local news reporter and as a political correspondent. But the time has come to move on. And now it is time to pass on the mantle to a new reporter. To anyone interested in joining the team I would say that if you are willing to put in the hard work, you will reap tremendous reward.”

Ambassador: getting registered ‘vital’ BRITAIN’S ambassador to Spain has told expatriates it is ‘vital’ they and their families are properly registered in an update on Brexit and political developments in Westminster. Simon Manley said Britain’s new Prime Minister Boris Johnson had been ‘absolutely clear’ the country would leave the EU on Thursday October 31, with or without a deal. British nationals need to be registered before that date to ensure they can benefit from measures outlined by the Spanish government covering a nodeal outcome, including on healthcare and residency, Manley added. “It is essential we prepare for the possibility of a no-deal, which is what we’re going to do,” the ambassador said. He added that the Brits in Spain Facebook page hosted a Q&A session on Tuesday. Manley’s comments come as Boris Johnson’s entry into 10 Downing Street ratcheted up the prospect of Britain leaving the EU without a deal. Johnson has repeatedly said he would prefer to leave with a deal but that it Brexit must happen by the October deadline, ‘do or die.’ His new ministerial appointments, which include making Brexiteers Dominic Raab and Jacob Rees-Mogg Foreign Secretary and Leader of the House of Commons respectively, also signalled a turn towards a harder Brexit line than predecessor Theresa May.

By Joe Gerrard BRITAIN’S government has ratcheted up preparations for a no-deal Brexit since its new prime minister took office little over a week ago, with one minister calling the prospect ‘very real.’ Michael Gove wrote in the Sunday Times that the government was now ‘working on the assumption’ Britain would leave the EU without a deal on Thursday October 31. “We still hope the EU will change their minds, but we must operate on the assumption that they will not. Nodeal is now a very real prospect and we must make sure that we are ready,” Gove wrote. Prime Minister Boris Johnson appointed Gove the new Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. The role does not traditionally have fixed responsibilities attached to it, but Gove has been tasked to oversee the government’s no-deal planning as part of the position. Gove wrote in his article: “Planning for no-deal is now this govern-

New Chancellor Sajid Javid echoed Johnson and Gove’s line in an interview with British media in which he pledged an at least extra €1 billion for no-deal preparations. The government is also reportedly drawing up a no-deal emergency budget for early October to have ready if necessary.

Husband’s prison meeting call A BRITISH woman’s husband has called on the prime minister to meet him after his partner’s jailing in Iran on spying charges which she denies. Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s husband Richard said he needed to speak with Boris Johnson to show the new prime minister could ‘keep his promises.’ Radcliffe told British media: “We were looking to you to be Nazanin’s hero and you promised us things that didn’t happen.

Ratcliffe’s comments follow his wife’s arrest in Iran on spying charges in April 2016. Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who worked for the Reuters news agency, was on holiday there. Johnson incorrectly told a parliamentary committee while serving as Foreign Secretary that the 40-year-old travelled to Iran to ‘teach journalism.’ Tehran’s Prosecutor General claimed she was recruiting people to spread anti-Iranian propaganda.

Football ace attacked FORMER Real Madrid player Mesut Özil may be wishing he was still living in Spain after he and fellow Arsenal player Sead Kolasinac were targeted by knifewielding thugs in London. While Özil took refuge in his SUV in the face of the attempted assault, Kolasinac - nicknamed The Tank - confronted the robbers, swinging his fists at them, before joining his teammate in the Mercedes G-Class 4X4 at 5pm last Thursday (July 25). The players sped off only for their assailants to follow on motorbikes in what must have been a terrifying ordeal. Eventually the Arsenal stars abandoned their car about a mile away and took refuge in a Turkish restaurant.

The incident shows the increased boldness of thieves in the streets of London and other parts of the UK. A few weeks ago, comedian Michael McIntyre was robbed in London’s Golders Green at a spot near to this incident. He too was set upon by a moped gang who smashed his car up with hammers outside his children’s school then forced him to hand over a £15,000 watch. As far as Özil is concerned, professionally he may be happier in London, but when it comes to personal safety he might have felt better off in Spain. The country comes 201st on a list of nations by homicide rate compared to the UK’s 185. Such figures are blunt, but there is no doubt a

perception by many people that Spain is a far safer country on which to walk the streets than the UK, particularly in the major cities. Website Numbeo collates real time data from contributors on people’s perceptions of crime. When it comes to a comparison of London to Madrid, it is clear people feel safer in the Spanish capital. It’s Crime Index measured London’s at 52.09 compared to 30.57 for Madrid, while London was classified as high risk for break-ins and thefts compared to Madrid’s low risk status, Many expats in Spain have said in previous studies that a major reason for moving to the country was to find a more secure place to live.

Minimum wage increases plan

THE Spanish government will take into account economic developments including market movements, consumption data and purchasing power when deciding on future minimum wage rises, a government official has said. Secretary of State for Economy and Business Support Ana de la Cueva said the government needed to take decisions on the rate ‘prudently.’ It comes as the government plans to increase the minimum wage to €900 a month. Previous efforts to raise it to €1,200 failed to pass along with the rest of last year’s draft budget.

Firms reveal half-year profits PUBLICLY-LISTED companies in Spain have published their earnings for the first six months of this year, with many recording year-on-year falls. Firms in the banking sector reported mixed results. CaixaBank made €622 million in net profits, beating the €510 million analysts forecast in July, but still earning 52.1 per cent less year-on-year. The company said staff restructuring which incurred one-off costs of €978 million gross hit their earnings. Sabadell made net profits of €532 million, an increase of almost 341 per cent compared to the first half of

In the finance sector more broadly, insurance company Mapfre made €374 million, 2.9 per cent less than last year. In the telecommunications sector Vodafone made more than €1 billion, a 10.3 per cent drop on last

year’s figures. Company sources said its decision not to offer promotions was undermined when its rivals chose not to follow suit. Basque operator Euskaltel made €22.9 million, 20.5 per cent less than in the same period in 2018. Losses came despite 4,000 new customers signing up for their services, company sources said. In manufacturing, the Acerinox steel maker earned €69 million, 50 per cent less than in the first half of 2018. The firm had to grapple with ‘very competitive’ market conditions, it said.

SPAIN’S corporate law regime is better than many of the world’s economies for small businesses but regional improvements are needed, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has said. The OECD’s SME and Entrepreneurship Outlook 2019 report stated Spanish law was god when it came to getting companies access to financing. But access to public procurement and the cost of infrastructure, much of which is the responsibility of autonomous communities, let the country down. Small companies’ lack of access to skilled workers also needed improvement, the OECD found.

Savings push LOSSES: Nissan is axing 12,500 jobs.

Nissan job cuts SPANISH workers at Japanese car maker Nissan’s plants are set to be the first to go in company plans to axe some 12,500 jobs worldwide. Nissan said some 600 workers at plants in Cataluña would retire early while 150 have already left the company voluntarily. Nissan plans to reduce staff numbers in two phases. Some 6,400 workers will have left by the end of this year while 6,100 will go in 2022 and 2023. The car marker is scaling back production by 10 per cent up to 2022. Nissan’s second quarter net profits were €53.1 million, a fall of 94.5 per cent year-on-year.

TELEFONICA telecommunications company president Jose Maria Alvarez-Pallete has told analysts that cutting costs to improve its balance sheet remains the ‘priority’ after firm figures showed it had reduced its debt liabilities for the ninth consecutive quarter.

Bond offer OIL company Repsol has issued €750 million in bonds over the next eight years which is being handled by banks including CaixaBank, Santander, Citigroup, Natixis, Goldman Sachs, HSBC, Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan and UniCredit.

Company worker spending survey THE average Spanish worker earned about €23,003 before tax last year, according to a survey from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) on worker costs to businesses. The INE’s Annual Labour Cost Survey found annual gross salaries increased by an average of 0.9 per cent compared to 2017 levels. It found the average worker costs firms around €30,883 a year after deductions of about

€202 from administrations to promote jobs and training are taken into account. The net annual cost of the average worker in 2018 was 1.1 per cent higher than the previous year, INE figures found. The survey found almost €412 is spent on welfare contributions per worker per year. Work expenses accounted for almost €209 a year, with €192 spent on severances and €82 on training.

Euro EUR/GBP: Unmoved at £0.89 EUR/USD: Down from $1.13 to $1.11 The euro (EUR) spent much of July with mixed movement, as its rival the US dollar (USD) recovered and the shared currency outlook became increasingly gloomy due to concerns about the eurozone’s economy. Eurozone economic activity, especially in the manufacturing sector and especially in Germany, has been showing signs of prolonged weakness and slowdown. Hopes for the eurozone economy to be rebounding from the slowdown seen earlier in the year have largely faded. Due to these lasting economic fears, markets have become more convinced that the European Central Bank (ECB) will ease monetary policy before the end of the year. The ECB signalled as much in its

policy decision this week. However, ECB President Mario Draghi kept markets from getting too jittery, as he was less gloomy about the economy than many had suspected. Still, investors will keep a close eye on eurozone data over the coming month, as it may indicate what

stimulus measures the ECB will adopt when it meets in September. Pound GBP/EUR: Unmoved at €1.12 GBP/USD: Down from $1.27 to $1.24 Once again among the worst-performing major currencies, the pound (GBP) continued to be throt-

As expected, hard Brexit advocate Boris Johnson won the Conservative Party leadership contest by a wide margin and became Britain’s new Prime Minister. Many fellow ‘Brexiteers’ have been selected for Johnson’s government cabinet, making economists anxious that a worst-case scenario no-deal Brexit will indeed be more likely. Brexit fears have only been part of the pound’s reason for weakness, as recent UK data continues to show signs of economic activity being weakened by uncertainty. This has caused Bank of England (BoE) interest rate cut speculation to rise as well. UK politics and the Brexit plans of the Johnson government are like-

US Dollar USD/GBP: Up from £0.78 to £0.80 USD/EUR: Up from €0.87 to €0.89 Following brief periods of weakness in June, the US dollar (USD) has been able to benefit from broad weakness in both the pound (GBP) and euro (EUR) to put in solid gains for much of July. While Federal Reserve interest rate cut bets have risen significantly, with analysts expecting multiple US interest rate cuts over the next year, weakness in US dollar rivals has prevented the currency from suffering too much. Of course, with the Federal Reserve’s July policy decision due to take place next week, the US dollar could be in for big movement in the coming weeks depending on the action and tone the bank takes.

Bank hiring row goes on SANTANDER has accused a prospective CEO of engaging in unethical behaviour by recording conversations between himself and senior company staff. The bank claimed Andrea Orcel, who was set to be Santander’s new CEO until it withdrew the offer, recorded conversations during the final phase of negotiations for the position. Bank president Ana Botin said a final contract for the role, which carried a salary of €17 million, ‘never materialised.’ His recording of conversations showed ‘dubious ethical and moral qualities’ which were not befitting the CEO of a bank, the president added. It comes after Orcel threatened to take Santander to court claiming they rescinded on their offer leaving him jobless. He is seeking more than €100 million in compensation from the bank. Botin said Orcel’s hiring process was conducted in good faith and carried out according to ‘solid’ corporate governance standards. Orcel is attempting to pin his case on an offer letter he signed for the company. But Botin said the letter had no legal validity.

Pension cost rise THE Spanish state spent almost €9.7 billion a month on pension payments from the start of July, an increase of more than 7 per cent year-on-year government figures show. Data from the Labour Ministry showed the amount allocated to pension spending represented a new record. It comes as the number of pensioners grew by 1.2 per cent from July 2018 to this year, reaching more than 9.7 million. July is the 42nd consecutive month in which pension costs have risen. The average retirement pension was around €1,138 a month as of July 1, almost 5 per cent higher than the previous year. The average general pension was about €991 a month when payouts for permanent disabilities, widowhood and orphans are taken into account. Retirement pensions account for almost two thirds of the more than 9.7 million total at more than six million. Almost 2.4 million widows’ pensions are paid out, more than 959,220 go to recipients with permanent disabilities, while more than 341,330 go to orphans. Government figures showed eight regions spent more on pensions than the national average. The top spenders were

Pension costs continue to climb as Spain’s population ages, meaning more people will receive payouts, but there will be fewer taxpayers supporting the system.

Firms probe THE National Commission for Markets and Securities (CNMC) has launched an investigation into 13 companies which operate Spain’s highway network over allegations they engaged in anti-competitve practices, including forming cartels and collusion to distribute contracts among themselves.

Not only did I watch with glee and satisfaction, reruns of the destruction of Corbyn’s bunch of seedy, glum faced and utterly miserable losers, by a buoyant Boris and a rib-tickling Rees Mogg - who managed to put forth arguments and positive ideas to the House in a language that the opposition couldn’t even understand, leave alone find credible answers for (Diana Abbott is still Googling up most of the words as we speak!), but I also discovered I had won yet another £15 million in a lottery; a game of chance that I have no recollection of, but is nevertheless kindly being held for me by the American Ambassador to Nigeria who wants to arrange a meet to hand it over. He will be arriving in the UK next week and has requested I send my address and phone number, so he can ‘deliver the package in person!’ Before I do that, I must urgently (‘before time will be against us’) send $280 to the cargo registration officer, a Mr Nwabundo Iscanyi Benjami in Lagos Nigeria. The letter is actually signed by Ambassador W Stuart Symington himself, so it is obviously genuine and subsequently this column will unfortunately be my final offering as I could, by the time it is published be off on a well-de-

A weekend of highlights

CROMER PIER: Quintessentially British. served golfing trip to Honolulu! To complete my weekend, I actually found myself the recipient of gale force winds at the end of Cromer pier! I know, I know, what a rich and abundantly varied life he must lead I hear you say. Well, in

fact, that is precisely how it panned out this weekend. After attending yet another tedious, but necessary specialist appointment in the UK (Don’t worry folks there’s life in the old canine yet!), I took up the kind invitation of some old friends to join them in a couple of days of frol-

ics in the depths of the beautiful Norfolk countryside. One of the weekend highlights was the summer variety show on the historic and quintessentially British, Cromer pier. Picked up by a coach (what else!) with the delightful title of ‘Marriots Chariots’ prominently displayed on its side, the highly skillful ‘charioteer’ wove us through the meandering byways and hedgerow flanked ‘low ways,’ till we soon found our selves savouring the sight of the crashing waves and slate grey briny of our Cromer seaside destination. Naturally, in true British tradition, the crippling Sahara record- breaking conditions had changed overnight and the wind, although not cold, was whistling across the bay, whipping up the surf and, once again in true British fashion, completely undeterring a whole family of swimmers and surfers frolicking happily on the stony grey and swirling foreshore. The end of the pier show was utterly delightful with all the rich British content and humour one would expect from this most local of traditions. Surrounded exclusively by the accents of dear old GB and even regaled at one stage by the National Anthem, my pint glass positively overflowed. A million thanks to all concerned. ANYONE who remembers Jose Maria Aznar’s ‘Leave, Sr Gonzalez’ in the mid-1990s felt the cockles of their heart warming up at the sight of the two ex-presidents talking together in Madrid. They were speaking at a technology forum moderated by the former Partido Popular Minister of Defence, Eduardo Serra and inevitably politics overlaid many of the questions and replies. How reassuring to hear voices of reason cutting through the highpitched hysterical babble of the preInvestiture debates and commentaries, old-timers declared. The old foes could safely ignore their successors’ red lines because Gonzalez has never come out as a full-fat Sanchista, while Aznar hinted that he believes Pablo Casado’s PP should abstain and enable Sanchez to govern. It almost fooled those who were around at the height of Gonzalez-Aznar enmity into sighing for the good old days. Those days never existed and Gon-

No need for a love-in

IT’S not a bad idea to have coalition government whose members are not enamoured of each other. A little mutual distrust and ill-disguised resentment is always more convincing than false smiles and promises of partnership made in heaven. Remember the cringe-making David CameronNick Clegg love-in at the 10 Downing Street garden in May 2010? Remember how it went pear-shaped in 2012 and ended belly-up in 2015? But a coalition is something that Spain has yet to experience and judging by the Investiture debacle it won’t happen in the foreseeable future. Downing Street.

With martyred altruism Iglesias said before the failed Investiture debate that he would forego the vicepresidency that was his due. He knew the bargain he still intended to drive would scupper any chance of a coalition on Sanchez’s terms and prevent his return to the Moncloa. Iglesias did so while preaching democracy but not practising it. Worse in his own way than Abascal because the Podemos supremo is both a hypocrite and a bigot.

A right old twoand-eight OH, the gloating! Oh, the pleasure on the faces of Pablo Casado and Albert Rivera when Iglesias gave an encore of his 2016 party trick and prevented Pedro Sanchez from becoming president last week. The Right might be at sixes and sevens, but it’s nothing compared to the Left’s two-and-eight.

Visuel CONSULAR MATTERS THE presentation given by a group of Danish artists called VISUEL is a special occasion, but if this presentation also takes place in one of the most special towns on the coast, such as Nerja, my consular duty is transformed into a personal pleasure, a welcome relief from running my firm on the Costa Del Sol. Starting on July 18, 2019 the work of a dozen Danish artists has been exhibiting in the Nerja Museum under the title of ‘Underground’ in triptych format. The title of the exhibition was very appropriate for two reasons, firstly the artists drew from the deepest of their souls and this is reflected in their different artistic ex-

pressions. Secondly the exhibition is in the room that is located in the basement of the Nerja Museum, which makes the works more intimate and closer. When Caroline Krabbe, one of the artists of the exhibition, asked me to give a speech at the exhibition’s opening ceremony, I rearranged my schedule as this was an event that I wanted to attend and be part of the moment. A summer night in Nerja and enjoying art is one of the most attractive offers I receive as Trade Delegate for Andalucia and Extremadura. Caroline belongs to a family of reputed Danish artists who have been based for many years in Frigiliana. OUR VIEW Good plan, bad cause A BUS and police escort service put on for young women attending a festival in the Basque Country is welcome, but also a damning indictment on Spain’s gender violence issue. Santurtzi Council and the Biscay Province town’s Local Police joined forces to bus young women in and out of the Carmenes de Santurtzi fiesta. Santurtzi Council culture spokesperson Danel Bringas said it aimed to avoid young women being targeted by ‘threats, propositions, unpleasant insinuations or violent situations.’ One comment from a user was chillingly telling. She said: “After a certain time of night this all gets crazy. Anything could happen to you.” The last part underlines how pervasive the dangers facing women are in Spain. The beast of machismo, or gender violence culture, continues to prey on women and its appetite for victims appears boundless. Recent government figures show 35 women died in proven or alleged gender violence cases so far this year, the third worst figure in a decade. More than 1,000 have died since records began in 2003. Santurtzi’s scheme and others are welcome, but all they do is treat the symptoms and not the problem. Educating young men out of sexist and violent mindsets and treating addictions would go a long way. But ultimately society must be radically altered and the economy transformed to stop it manufacturing the poverty which spawns so much of the causes of the gender violence scourge.

Being honest will bring you peace JORIS PLU HONESTY. We can write hundreds of books about this one single word. We all want honesty, to be honest ourselves or other people to be honest with us. But on the other hand it frightens us a lot. Because pure honesty is right in your face. It is about how people feel. How they see things. And then just say it. No filter. Honesty can hurt. A lot. It can also heal. Make one feel free. At peace. John Lennon once said ‘Being honest may not get you many friends, but it will always get you the right ones.’ And he was a man who loved peace in his life. For him, for the whole world.

CELLULITE is when the fat beneath the skin pushes against the connective tissue. This is what causes the skin above it to look dimpled and bumpy. There are varying degrees of cellulite and it can range from barely noticeable to more severe and spread over a large area. Although cellulite is not harmful, it is not something that is welcomed by many women. It is often difficult to know what causes cellulite, as there are often different factors involved, including, diet, lack of exercise, a person’s genetic make-up and their metabolism. Having cellulite can be dependent on lifestyle. Being active with a healthy diet can have a significant effect on how visible your cellulite is or whether you have it at all. A highly stressful lifestyle has also been shown to increase the compounds associated with the development of cellulite, whereas exercising regularly and eating healthily can help to make cellulite less noticeable and even prevent it. It is said that nothing will get rid of cellulite, but a healthy diet, staying hydrated, avoiding stress and exercise will reduce

Of course, honesty is also something very personal. We all see and feel things differently, we have different backgrounds. So being honest can be very tricky. As long as we are respectful to others and speak with integrity, not having the intention to hurt someone, I believe

that being honest is the best thing we can do. Ever. What do you think? Not easy at all. Since we know or sometimes even do not know how the other person will react. So therefore, we are most of the times not really honest, or just a little

honest. And we put a big smile on top of it while saying the honest things. To soften the brutal honesty which can be so painful for the other party. Is this a good way of doing it? Or maybe most of us already do it like this? For as long as we remember, pure honesty is not easy. What we can do, if we are not fully honest today towards others and also not to ourselves, we must train this step by step, day by day. Just be a little more honest next time. And the next one. Just practice it. Rome was not built in one day. Changing a behaviour takes time and effort. And like Lennon has said. You will maybe lose some people in your life, but the real ones will stay.

HONESTY: The best option.

Stay and be true to yourself ROBERT SHALLIS ‘BIRDS of a feather flock together.’ There’s certainly something to be said about that phrase. In many ways the company you keep can define who you are, we’re usually drawn to making friends with those who like the same things or have similar traits, we’re also drawn to people we aspire to be like, or at the very least possess qualities that may resonate with us. It has been said ‘you eventually become the average of the people you spend most of your time with.’ However, I believe that it has more to do with the amount of time we spend with people which has the greater impact, thus moulding a large part of the person you become. What happens when you find yourself spending time with people who are not actually like you? People that don’t share the same views or values? Or have a different moral standing? If these people disempower you, surely the question to ask yourself is,

DON’T COMPROMISE: Be yourself.

‘why I am spending time with these people?’ Failing to be your true self will inhibit true friendships as you’re not expressing the real you. If the real you is hidden and a false personality created to fit in, in order to please others, this will certainly lead you to feel imprisoned as the creative wonderful potential you have is simply locked away

and those who deserve to appreciate and welcome it are deprived of it. Do you find yourself: concerned by what others think, trying to please others, fearful of their disapproval, conscious of your mannerisms and what you say? Shyness, lack of self-confidence, nervousness, or fear of criticism can all be contributing factors to hiding your

true personality and stop you from naturally getting along with others. Moreover, you’ll be missing out on people who would be better suited to the real you and enable you to be your real self. A good way to start is to invest in people who are investable and not those that you feel you have an obligatory allegiance to. Who or what are in-

vestable people? These are people who genuinely care about you, remain loyal and accept and love you for who and what you are. They are people who no matter what their status is in life know they are no better than you. Some may say these type of people are hard to find, look closely, they’re everywhere, but you will never notice or meet them if you are not aligned to them, simply put, if you are spending your time and energy on relationships that do not really serve you, you will miss investable people. Compromising your true self, character and nature will not give you the fulfilment you so very much deserve. You can make a good impression on people by not concerning yourself as to what he or she may think of you. This can be difficult at first but when someone judges you remember, they are simply defining themselves, not defining you. Refuse to get caught up in who you think you should be, relax and be who you are. You are just one decision away from ‘taking action’ and becoming your true self. So I urge you, make that choice today and watch the miracles of life start to unfold.

AT this time of year, air travel’s uppermost in many people’s minds. Not always a pleasant experience what with queuing, flight delays, threats of strikes etc. But let’s look at another problem: reclining seats in economy class. You know, when the guy in front must have loosened an extra bolt in the seat base - because he’s effectively in your lap. And bang! There go your laptop, drinks and food! On long haul, ideally you should only be able to recline seats an hour or so after the main meal has been served. Problem sorted! But if there is a problem, why not speak out (politely) rather than sulking and taking a picture for social media - which everyone seems to do nowadays? But symptomatic of the ‘snowflake generation’ that seems to say to itself: I have a problem, but rather than fix it I’ll post a bunch of messages declaring how ****** off I am, hoping that the silent indignation and smiley faces will somehow make it all go away... Flying used to be fun, but I’m talking about the ‘80s and even earlier. Since then, flying’s become increasingly punishing as the seat cushions in cattle class have become thinner

A better system for proxies Some years ago, our Community of Property Owners had the same problem regarding proxy votes as your earlier questioner. When residents realised that their wishes were not necessarily carried out by the proxy holder, discontent arose. When I became president, I instructed our administrators to include all Agenda items on the proxy form. Voters could then put a tick against each item to vote Yes/No/Abstain. This ensures that their wishes are respected. This system is normal practice among large corporations for their AGM, particularly for electing committee/board members. A CASTLE for sale in Nijar has been revealed as the most expensive property on the market in Almeria Province. San Roman, a fortress which dates from the 18th century, is currently priced at €3.3 million on the property website Idealista. It covers an area of 740 square metres, includes a garage and overlooks the beach of Rodalquilar in the Cabo de Gata Natural Park. Estate agents Idealista said the castle was fully renovated and said it could be converted into a hotel or restaurant if not used as a home.

“Dreamy views, wonderful skies, stars you have never seen, exciting seas, an impressive beach and pure nature. All this, and a castle at your fingertips,” the estate agent said. The fort comes equipped with six bedrooms, six bathrooms, a terrace, a balcony and space to park vehicles. It sits on a plot of land measuring 33,612 square metres.

I SAW on the news that there is a scumbag American financier called Jeffrey Epstein being accused again of having sex with underage women. OK, let’s get this clear there is no such thing as ‘an underage woman.’ She’s a child!! And he is a paedophile. If he is guilty, bang him up and throw the key away instead of repeating the pittance of a sentence he got in 2008. I got a letter from my insurance company the other day informing me that I had got a speeding fine. It said: ‘We are contacting you because we have located the publication of a notice related to the vehicle registration number xxxxxxx.’ The information in this notification is as follows: and it then goes on to tell when and where and how much the fine was. I ‘phoned them and asked how they knew about it before I did. They told me that these notices go into this publication if Trafico do not get a response from the second letter they send to the owner of the vehicle.

Well you know where this is going. I never got a second letter. In fact, I never got a first letter. I find this strange because there is someone on our gate 24/7 and Correos know that even if he’s away for a few minutes, they only have to wait a short time. I don’t believe I was sent anything. The person on the ‘phone informed me that this is not unusual. I was fortunate. I paid it straight away and managed to get the maximum discount on my fine. Now not every company gives this service, so I was lucky. I was relating this story to my mate and he told me a horror story about how he had a fine that he never knew anything about and he finished up with a horrendous fine. The first thing he knew about it was when his bank account was embargoed and even though he protested, they were not interested and insisted that the letters had been sent. I have had similar experiences here with letters from the town hall or other official places where it’s something to do with a payment. I mean, they would never tell porkies about these letters just to get a bit of extra dosh would they? Or would they? Let me know if you have had any experiences of fine letters going missing.
