A DATE has been set for the first bullfight in Mallorca since a 2017 ‘ban’ was overturned by the Constitutional court. Bullfighting website Mundotoro has announced that a bullfight will take place in the Plaza de Toros in Palma on August 9. An August bullfight at the Coliseo Balear ring, which is celebrating its 90th year, was a tradition until the ‘ley del toros’ outlawed the killing of bulls. The law actually stopped short of an outright ban, but the many regulations that had to be followed effectively stopped the fights from going ahead in Mallorca. Legislators were concerned an outright ban would be deemed unconstitutional, but despite their best efforts the appropriate court made just such a ruling anyway. The Constitutional Court decided that the law potentially violated the constitution and that it was a matter for the na-

tional government in any case. This ruling was made in December, and now the first date has been set for a ‘corrida.’ But Palma City Hall says that the paperwork is not in order and a licence

has yet to be granted. Inspections are needed to make sure the bulls are not drugged, that children have no access to alcohol and for various safety factors. Alcudia, Inca, Muro and Palma were the only towns in Mallorca to still have bullfights before the 2017 law. So far it is only Palma that has announced a return of the blood sport.

Dirty water A DISCHARGE of contaminated water forced the closure of a beach in Port Andratx on Sunday. It appears that a pump located near the beach caused the contamination and the accompanying bad smell. Once the analysis is back the beach will be reopened.

Brit ‘assaulted medics’ A BRITISH tourist has been arrested after he allegedly tried to attack an ambulance crew who were bandaging his bleeding hand. The incident happened when medics were called to treat the man, who was described as drunk or intoxicated by drugs, after he apparently cut his hand when smashing a shop window in the Plaza Fornes in Magaluf. As they tried to help him it is alleged he threw sev-

Rape suspect released A 22-YEAR-OLD Irish man was arrested for allegedly raping a British woman, also 22, at a hotel in Magaluf. But he was released by a court after the woman said she did not want to press charges. According to the Guardia Civil the woman had agreed to go back to the man’s room. Once there he insisted on having sex, despite her explicitly refusing to do so. The victim reported the alleged assault to the Guardia Civil and was later transferred to Son Espases to undergo a gynaecological check-up. Police officers arrested the suspect for sexual assault. After hearing statements from the man and woman, the judge ordered the man’s release.

Sailing tragedy A 54-YEAR-OLD man died yesterday after he fell from a catamaran in Palma Bay. His sailing companions pulled him from the sea, alerted emergency services and sailed directly to Portopi where an ambulance was waiting. But it was too late, medics could only certify the victim’s death. A post-mortem examination is taking place. First indications are he may have been taken suddenly ill, causing him to fall overboard.

Battle for terraces in Palma city TERRACE regulations are not a new topic of conversation between the council and bar and restaurant owners in Palma, but recent enforcement of these measures have caused the conversation to become decidedly more heated. New regulations enforced by Palma Town Hall regarding the occupation of the public pavements have resulted in 179 fewer terraces throughout the city - 79 that no longer have authorisation from the town hall and 100 that are awaiting their verdict. This means that Palma has lost

17.1 per cent of its terraces in a year. Although the new regulations were approved last July, it is only now that they are being enforced - in the middle of the busiest season of the year. The motivation for these regulations is to maintain 2.5 metres of unoccupied space in the old town and two metres in other parts of the city. Bindu Shah and Patryk Kusiak are the owners of Bindi Asian Gastrobar in Santa Catalina and are one of the numerous businesses feeling the impact of

these new laws. With 46 covers inside the restaurant and 22 outside on the small terrace, Bin and Patryk said they were regularly at capacity. Since the new measures were introduced they have been battling with the town hall as they have now lost over 50 per cent of their terrace. “It has really affected our business”, Bin told EWN, “our takings are now lower, we are losing bookings as people prefer to sit outside, we have had to let a member of staff go and the rest are now working reduced hours.”

Beautiful contender THIS picture of Frigiliana comes as the Andalucian town is competing with 49 others to be named the most beautiful contender. Cadena Ser shortlisted Frigiliana along with others from across Spain to decide which town is the country’s best looking. Almeria’s Mojacar, Setenil de las Bodegas in Cadiz, Alicante’s Castell de Guadalest and Fornalutx in Mallorca were also chosen for the public vote. Frigiliana lies in the east of Malaga Province in the Axarquia region.

It covers an area of almost 40 square kilometres and is nestled between the mountains of the Sierra de Almijara range about 300 metres above sea level. The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The name Frigiliana is thought to come from a settlement named Frexinius built by the Romans. T h e i n v a d i n g Vi s i g o t h s d e s t r o y e d t h e t o w n ’s R o m a n f o r t sometime in the 5th century. It was captured by the Moors shortly after they began their invasion of the Iberian Peninsula in 711.

Several churches including that of San Antonio as well as the Palacio de las Condes were built after the Spanish captured the town during the Reconquista. Many of those monuments can still be seen in the town today which is now popular with tourists both from Spain and overseas. Frigiliana also holds several well-known fiestas including the Festival of the Three Cultures which celebrates its Christian, Jewish and Islamic heritage.

Boy aged 3 trapped in pool

THE body of a 60-year-old American man who disappeared while hiking in Mallorcan mountains has been found. Guardia Civil officers say Edward Benedict was found on Monday morning in steep terrain at Cingles de Son Rullan by Soller firefighters. It appears that the man fell from a great height, say police. He had been on a hike as part of a group, but became separated from his companions. It is thought he had gone on ahead of them to collect his wife from the airport, but when they returned to their meeting point in Deia there was no sign of him. They notified police who launched a search on Sunday. It was resumed Monday morning with the help of a helicopter, Guardia Civil Mountain Rescue team and a dog unit.

A THREE-YEAR-OLD Swedish boy was trapped in a swimming pool for three hours when his arm got stuck in a pipe. Twenty firefighters, Local Police, Guardia Civil and medics were called to a hotel in the Platja de Muri area of Mallorca to rescue the child. The firefighters had to dig through concrete to reach the pipe and cut it to free the boy. For 180 minutes he remained in his mother ’s arms until he was finally released to a standing ovation from onlookers. The drama took place at around 10.45am on Saturday at the Alcúdia Pins hotel. Although the rescue was described as ‘complicated,’ the child’s life was never in danger. Medics gave him a clean bill of health and it was not necessary to take him to hospital. One of the rescuers said: “He has held out like a champion.”

Time to die A WOMAN who went through a terrifying ordeal which ended with her boyfriend trying to kill her by driving off a steep embankment has seen him jailed for five years. Palma court heard that in the summer of 2017 the couple were driving on the Banyalbufar to Esporles road when an argument started. The accused, a 32-year-old Spaniard, is said to have stopped the car near the edge of a steep slope and shouted “It’s here, it’s time.” Alarmed, his victim jumped from the car and began walking down the road in search of help. But the convicted man caught up with her, strangled her then forced the woman back into the car. He then went back to the embankment, accelerated and drove straight off, with the intention of killing his victim. They both suffered multiple injuries in the incident. As well as the jail sentence the man has had a 10 year exclusion order placed on him and been ordered to pay the victim €4,600 compensation for her injuries and the value of her car, which was written off.

Clocking in AFTER the implementation of the law to regulate hours of overtime worked in the Balearics it appears many companies, including the University of the Balearics (UIB), are failing to correctly monitor and record employees’ working hours. The law was introduced across the country two months ago on May 12 to help reduce the number of hours overtime that are worked and often unpaid, especially in the summer months. The idea is for employees to either sign in and out of the office manually or with a fingerprint scanner to record the hours they work and submit them should they be requested or subject to inspection. The UIB are now subject to a fine of between €626 and €6,250 for failure to comply with the law with many of the 1,024 employees not registering their work hours.

Beach sewage call RESIDENTS fed up with some of Palma’s most emblematic beaches being shut every time it rains heavily because of overflowing sewage have called for ‘immediate action.’ The Federació de Veïnats de sa Ciutat de Palma and residents groups from El Molinar told city mayor José Hila: “Palma residents and tourists are afraid to bathe every time it rains as the waters are polluted.” President of the federation, Miquel Obrador spoke out after the ‘umpteenth’ closure of the beaches of Can Pere Antoni and Ciutat Jardi last week. The problem is the present sewage works get

overwhelmed by rainwater, leading to the overflowing of dirty into the sea and onto the beaches of Palma. Now the federation has urged Mayor José Hila to ‘stop making a fool of himself.’ Obrador said: “We are more than fed up with the fact that every time two drops fall, they have to close these emblematic beaches that not only affect the neighbours who live in El Molinar, Coll d’en Rabassa or Portixol, but also all the people of Palma.” He is now calling for residents, businesses and tour companies to pressurise the council into rapidly finding a solution.

Data protection THE European Union approved the regulation of how personal data is processed and circulated in April 2016, and these regulations have been mandatory since May 2018 changing the way companies and organisations handle data protection. In the Balearic Islands, however, it seems that these laws are still not being stringently followed by several of the government agencies. It is alleged that the Tax Agency and the IB-Salud do not comply with the European or Spanish regulations when it comes to the personal data of Balearic residents. The Tax Agency of the Balearic Islands, which has access to data on each and every individual residing in the Balearics, has not published a privacy policy on its website nor appointed an individual to oversee data protection.

Lunar eclipse over Mallorca AT approximately 10pm on Tuesday, residents of Mallorca took to the streets, terraces and gardens to witness the lunar eclipse that dominated the sky. At 10.02pm in Spain, the earth shadowed the moon according to data from the National Astronomical Observatory of the National Geographic Institute. The eclipse lasted approximately three hours until 1am, although the full breathtaking impact could be seen at 11.30pm. The National Astronomical Observatory suggested that the lunar eclipse was best viewed from somewhere relatively dark with as little light pollution as possible. Unlike with a solar eclipse, there is no risk to health should people look directly at it and no special equipment is needed to see it. Social media around the island was

Alleged pool abuse AN Indian man is facing three years in jail accused of abusing a 15-year-old at a popular water park in Mallorca. The incident occurred in July of last summer when the accused man allegedly touched the girl inappropriately in one of the pools and made ad-

vances, although the man maintains that he was not aware of the girl’s age. The trial will take place in Palma next week where the victim will testify. If convicted the accused will have to pay ₏1,000 to the victim and serve up to three years in prison.

Barrier crash ON Tuesday at 6.17pm the Guardia Civil was called to an incident in Bella Vista urbanisation in El Arenal in Palma in which a car had driven off the road, through a barrier and into some building works. The car had crashed four metres into a ravine and

was on its roof by the time the emergency services arrived. The fire department and the Guardia Civil successfully secured the area and eventually removed the vehicle. No injuries were reported and the driver was reportedly sober and alert.

THE WEEK IN POLITICS By Joe Gerrard TALKS between the left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) and the leftist Podemos appear to have reached an impasse as the deadline for a vote on Spain’s new government looms. Several meetings between PSOE leader and acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Podemos head Pablo Iglesias have failed to bear fruit. Sanchez called on Iglesias to put aside their differences and agree to give PSOE Podemos’ backing in an interview with the TVE channel. Igelsias said in a separate interview the Spanish had given Spain’s main leftwing parties a mandate to “share power and responsibility.” Between them the two parties have 165 seats in the Congress of Deputies, 11 shy of the 176 needed for a majority. The chief sticking point remains the extent to which Podemos could influence government policy as a junior partner in the arrangement. Sanchez and PSOE would ideally like to see Podemos lend

This is in keeping with a trend in Spain’s democratic history which has seen PSOE subordinate smaller left parties to its agenda. But Iglesias has seen an opportunity to get himself and other leading Podemos figures

C A M PA I G N pledges made by the two Conservatives vying for the party leadership and British premiership received rebukes this week. Both former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and current office holder Jeremy Hunt have sought to play down the negative impact a no-deal Brexit would have on Britain’s economy. A central plank of both their campaigns has been to reopen talks with the EU to secure further concessions from Brussels that Prime Minister Theresa May could not. The so-called Irish backstop remains a key target among other measures. Current frontrunner Johnson has also made leaving the EU on Thursday October 31 a priority. He recently referred to it as a matter of life and death. But hopes from both that the changing of the guard with new appointments to senior posts in Brussels could change the bloc’s tone were dashed at the weekend. materialising soon. Crawford Falconer, Britain’s chief trade negotiation advisor, said Britain had previously had ‘very little’ to say on global trade policy, but that could

change once it leaves the EU. It comes as International Trade Secretary Liam Fox said a post-Brexit deal with the US may take longer to broker because of having to negotiate on a state level. Falconer told British media: “I always found it anomalous from the outside that the world’s fifth largest economy, as Britain has always been, really had very little to say on the international trade system. That is changing rapidly now and will change ever more rapidly.” Falconer is charged with putting Britain on a trade negotiation footing in preparation for it leaving the EU. He has implemented a programme to recruit thousands of negotiators who can be sent across the world to strike deals post-Brexit. Falconer’s comments come as Fox said Britain should try to secure a deal with the US quickly. But different regulations in different states means the deal will either take longer to reach or only cover certain areas.

WOODLAND DESTROYED: The fire spread rapidly to nearby trees.

Wood cutters ‘caused blaze’ TWO woodcutters have been reported for allegedly negligently starting a forest fire that destroyed 10 hectares of woodland in Spain. The fire in the El Higueron area of Benalmadena (Malaga) broke out in the yard of a firewood company on June 13, before rapidly spreading to nearby trees. A police investigation has

concluded that the blaze was caused by the negligence of two people working for the company. Although the main activity of the company is the handling of combustible materials, it did not have any measures to prevent the spread of a fire, such as fire extinguishers or firewalls. This allowed the flames to spread

to the woodland. Strong winds fanned the fire, and the billowing smoke meant the main A7 road had to be closed off in both directions for several hours, with long tail backs both on the A7 and the alternative coastal road. The police report has been handed to a Torremolinos court.

Organ donation LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. As of 2010, Spain has operated an ‘opt-out’ (or presumed consent) system for deceased organ donation. This addresses the rate or refusal of potential donors or their families in giving permission for the use of organs. The rate of family refusal in Spain is 13 per cent, compared to 37 per cent in England (according to the National Transplant Organisation figures - ONT). According to the ONT, Brits living in Spain are more likely to donate their organs than their countrymen back home. It’s not necessary to have a donor card. What is important is to let family members and loved ones know your wishes in terms of organ donation. Figures published by the Spanish ONT in 2017 put the country as world leader in donation and transplants, reaching a new record with 46.9 donors per million people and 5.261 transplants. Spain has been a global leader in organ donation and transplantation for the past 26 years. Broken down by organ, there were 3,269 kidney surgeries (up 9 per cent on 2016), 1,247 liver transplants (up 8 per cent), 304 heart procedures (8 per cent rise), 363 lung surgeries (up 18 per cent), 70 pancreas transplants (down 4 per cent) and eight bowel surgical procedures (up 100 per cent). According to the National Transplant Organisation (ONT), these surgeries are equivalent to six donors and 14 surgical procedures a day. In addition, Spain saw a new record in bone marrow donation last year, with 78,291 new donors and an increase of 196 per cent over the previous year. At this rate, the country could reach its target of 400,000 bone marrow donors well before the mid-2020 goal. In Spain the number of those on the waiting list was reduced to 4,896 in 2017, from 5,480, although the number of children waiting for organs increased to 74, from 48 a year earlier. Lung and heart are viable for 4-6 hours after death, liver and pancreas 24 hours, kidney 72 hours, corneas 14 days, bone and skin five years, and heart valves up to 10 years. Small intestines, veins, tendons and ligaments can also be donated. A single organ donor can save up to eight people and a single tissue donor may enhance the lives of up to 50 people. Sugar tax scrapped A JUDGE has scrapped a tax on sugary drinks in Cataluña, saying that it is null and void because of insufficient consultation. Several distribution associations, supermarket chains, shops and restaurants had come together to ask for a judicial review. The High Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) was told by the associations that there was an absence of public consultation and that the Catalan government had exceeded its powers of taxation. They also considered that the tax is unconstitutional, discriminatory and arbitrary because it ‘produces extraterritorial effects outside the autonomous community, thus violating the unity of the market.’ But the ruling is not

final, which means that the Catalan government can appeal. It had applied the controversial tax on sugary drinks in May 2017 to discourage consumption

and raise revenue, a measure aimed at soft drinks, juices, sports energy drinks, milkshakes and flavoured waters, among others.

European finance ministers have agreed to put forward a single candidate.

The centre will work closely with local universities and training colleges to educate and develop technology professionals. Mercedes Oblanca, managing director of Accenture Technology Iberia said: “This new Advanced Technology Centre in Spain will enhance our ability to provide the capacity, speed and talent that our clients require to embrace new IT and advance their digital transformation efforts.” Accenture shares have gained 35.4 per cent so far this year compared to the 29.7 per cent rally of its industry sector.

Animal-free meat SPANISH company Biotech Foods is aiming to have lab-grown ‘meat’ being produced at production scale with full regulatory approval by the end of 2021. Co-founder Mercedes Vila said that the cost of producing a kilo of cultured meat is now about €100. Factory scale production would considerably lower costs, making it an economically viable addition to

the food market. A year ago, a cost of $800 (€710) a kilo was put on a similar product by Israeli biotech company Future Meats Technologies. Culture meat is grown in a bioreactor similar to those used to ferment beer. Stem cells from an animal’s muscle tissue are put in a culture medium and grow into the food product.

Strike called IBERIA workers at Barcelona’s El Prat airport have called a strike for July 27 and 28. It is in protest at what the 2,000 workers call an ‘overload of work and lack of personnel to meet real needs.’ In a statement the UGT trade union said that the company has systematically failed to comply with agreements previously reached with workers. These include the implementation of an industrial plan for the airport that allows the hiring of extra staff when current workers are ‘overloaded.’ It was the promise of such a plan that defused a called strike at this time last summer. The UFT said: “A year later the problems remain the same, with the worsening of the increase in workload compared to that time and the lack of solutions in terms of staff size.”

No go CLOTHES retailing giant Inditex has won a legal battle to protect its Zara brand name after an EU court annulled a decision to register Zara Tanzaniya Adventures as a trademark for travel and tourism services.

No tax ON APP: Madrid taxis are joining Cabify.

Cabify integrate taxis PEOPLE can now hire taxis in Madrid and Valencia through the Cabify mobile phone app. It has integrated 100 licensed taxis into its ‘fleet’ in Madrid and 10 in Valencia as it seeks to offer a whole range of road transport options from one app. People will be able to choose from VTC (private hire with driver as traditionally associated with the app) to taxis, motorcycles and scooters. When opening the application, the

user can choose between hiring a VTC or a taxi. If the latter is chosen, the user will be given an estimated price of their journey, but the final price will be according to the meter. The VTC option gives a set fare immediately. Taxis that have joined the platform will not carry any special badges and, when not contracted by Cabify, will be able to pick up passengers on the street like any other taxi. Cabify estimates that taxi drivers will see an increase in turnover of be-

tween 25 per cent and 30 per cent, by increasing the number of journeys they make and minimising empty mileage. The Spanish-owned company has carried out a pilot in Santander before commercially launching the taxi app in Madrid and Valencia. In the Cantabrian capital, where just three drivers joined, it has met with a hostile reaction from taxi organisations, but Cabify has decided to roll out the programme anyway.

SPANISH Finance Minister Nadia Calviño has said Spain is reluctant to follow the lead of France in introducing an eco-tax on air fares, as the country is so reliant on tourism and does not want to hit the sector.

No free NHS for unregistered non-European nationals, except in dire emergencies. All recipients billed for services incurred. 4. Genuine asylum seekers capped at 5,000 per year. Only exceptional circumstances considered after this figure reached. 5. A restriction on numbers of specific religious buildings allowed per capita. 6. Rigorous inspections of schools suspected of disproportionate religious curriculums.

Jackie Groundsell travelled from the UK to spend two days with staff in Fuengirola at the invite of EWN CEO Michel Euesden. “I met Michel at the International Women’s Day conference in Marbella in March, a collaborative event between Costa Women and 1230 TWC, and we built up a relationship from there,” explained the mother of three who launched the leading business women’s network in 2002. Jackie added: “We spent a day together here in Spain in May. We got on really well and have taken it from there, so when Michel invited me back to Spain to spend a couple of days in the head office to develop business together, I jumped at it. “It shows how technology has opened up the world. There are very few boundaries to achieve whatever you want to achieve. The first link with Ali Meehan of Costa Women was through Twitter and from there the connection with Michel was through technology. “When I first walked into the EWN office I was taken by the impressive structure visually. Everybody works extremely hard here and the office has a very nice feel about it. “As a company EWN is certainly well established and will definitely continue to grow.” Jackie explained how 1230 The Women’s Company (1230 TWC) provides on and off-line trading and business growth opportunities

met through a business course. What an amazing eye opener it was. “I had done the Chamber of Commerce but that was really male dominated at that time. This was totally different. There were 27 women who didn’t know each other but met at lunchtime, shared a drink and talked and at the end it felt like we had known each other for years.” Jackie began sharing an office in the capital for her own IT train-

ing company, and her own network of all-female support grew quickly and organically; an everincreasing number of women who worked in the city, getting together for lunch once a month to chat and support each other in business. “I was a business advisor for the then Bromley Chamber of Commerce and they asked us to help, so we had a meeting and 54 women turned up. Other women started asking if they could run a

meeting and we soon realised we had to have a more organised approach and the business was born. “Given that many business women are squeezed at either end of the day with family commitments, lunch-time meetings proved to be the most convenient time of day for m a n y, h e n c e t h e name 12.30. “Being able to see the synergies and connect businesswomen, to see the ‘eureka!’ moment that 1230 TWC training and networking provides as their businesses grow, is so rewarding; I am exceptionally fortunate to be in a business that I just love.” Jackie said that meeting her various personal challenges in her own life has given her great empathy with the inspiring business women she meets and supports through networking. “I would say my can-do attitude and ability to talk are two of my greatest personal assets. I’m always up for a challenge!” added Jackie who continues to run her IT training company as part of 1230 Business School as well as public speaking. “I look forward to seeing everyone on March 12 and 13, 2020.”

I WAS shocked to read the issue talking about solidarity with the ‘LBGTQI’ community. As a lesbian I do not feel part of this ‘community’ as our interests are not the same and in the case of the T diametrically opposed. We do not believe that men can change sex or vice versa. Men who perform femininity are not countering stereotypes and instead are pandering to fetishes. There is huge pressure from trans activists to access women only spaces, single sex hospital wards, prisons, refuges and changing rooms. Women feel unsafe as a result... selfidentification allows any male who says he feels like a woman to overrule their wishes. I was particularly surprised to read that Andalucía is being praised for allowing children to choose their ‘gender’ before puberty and receive hormonal treatment to suit their preferred role. In my and many others view, this is a dangerous practice and basically amounts to experimentation on confused adolescents. The research that exists suggests that outcomes are poor eg the young people’s distress is no better, and children should not be able to give consent to life changing and damaging medication. There is a huge increase in girls who feel different and confused and instead of receiving adequate counselling, they are put on a path to irreversible treatments and mutilation of their bodies by mastectomies and unproved hormones. These girls often have other issues such as autism or may have been sexually abused. Many would have become lesbians and nearly all are likely to desist if given time. Andalucía should not be proud of their position on this. There is a huge scandal building on this and it is shameful that this ‘tolerant’ society is doing the enabling. Yours sincerely F Gillard

The beauty of Benidorm I RECENTLY visited the town of Benidorm and after the town being rubbished by all and sundry, particularly in the tabloid press, I was expecting the worse. But on my arrival, I found a warm, clean and inviting town and to my surprise, there were many Spanish on holiday there. ALLEGATIONS that a British tourist assaulted medical personnel makes for worrying reading as cases of patients harming doctors and nurses continue to rise. The British man’s alleged assault, in Mallorca’s Magaluf resort, comes as a local trade union representing medical staff said it was the fifth such attack in a week. The attacks have not just been confined to Mallorca. One assault took place at a clinic in San Pedro de Alcantara on the Costa del Sol earlier this month. Trade unions across Spain have called for more to be done to protect staff. A total of 28 personnel were attacked in Malaga Province alone, according to data from the area’s Medical Association. Cases sometimes involve patients brought to hospital under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Others are simply instances of wanton aggression. But as with many things the attacks themselves do not constitute the problem on their own. Such violence is symptomatic of deeper issues. Many hospitals across Spain are overstretched and understaffed because of the exodus of staff to other countries and spending cuts. Limited numbers of staff trying to manage and treat patients, many of whom arrive in emergency rooms frustrated and unable to act reasonably, clearly contributes to the phenomenon. That said, everyone has the right to work in dignity and without fear from threatening or violent behaviour. There is no justification for such attacks.

Spanish police called to flight: Why is it always the English groups who make these problems on the way to Spain and not the other way around? Same with balconing. Walking - the Nordic way By Dave Proctor DOCTORS promote walking for a real variety of ailments. Depressed? then go for a walk in the country. Overweight? go for a walk. Indigestion? go for a walk after your meal, and so it goes on. Around my village at most times of the day, except lunchtime and in the heat of the summer sun, there are hordes of pensioners out for a stroll. Indeed there is one group of about six ladies who walk fanned out across the width of the local streets. They remind me of the cast of Reservoir Dogs, but an older female version. But given the ages that the locals reach (as evidenced in the local cemetery), then I suspect that such medical advice may not be too bad. To up your exercise level a great idea is to take up Nordic walking.

GO FOR A WALK: Nordic style. Nordic walking (originally called by the catchy name sauvakävely in Finnish) is fitness walking with specially designed poles. While trekkers, backpackers and skiers had been using the basic concept for decades, the idea was de-

veloped about 40 years ago, on the basis of off-season ski-training activity while using one-piece ski poles. Compared to regular walking, Nordic walking (also called pole walking) involves applying force to the poles with each stride. Nordic walkers use more

of their entire body (with greater intensity) and receive a whole-body fitness work out not present in normal walking, with great benefits for the chest, triceps, biceps, shoulder, abdominals, spinal and other core muscles which may result in significant increases in your heart rate. Nordic walking is particularly effective at helping you lose weight because of how intense it is as a physical activity. The use of the poles in Nordic walking pressures you to use more muscles, w h i c h h a s a n e ff e c t o n burning calories at a faster pace than just ordinary walking. It is a good idea to purchase a decent pair of walking boots or shoes and you will need the poles, which a certain international sports chain have in stock for under €20. So follow your doctor ’s advice and go for a walk.

Interestingly in a recent HSBC Global Survey, which was based on a large number of online surveys, Spain is the fourth most preferred Country for Expats, behind Switzerland, Singapore and Canada, up from the 14th place in 2018 and Spain is the most preferred location for ‘quality of life.’ The UK was ranked 27th overall, behind mainland China. The report highlights that 61 per cent of respondents said they felt more protected in Spain than in their home country. The good weather was described as a major determining factor by 39 per cent of respondents, while 56

Bullfighting is definitely not a sport LAURA PENN ‘PENN TO PAPER’ I AM a placid person... honest. I truly believe in education that creates understanding then (hopefully) tolerance. However, there is one subject that is guaranteed to see me transform, Exocistlike, from pacifist to grade A activist and that subject is... animal cruelty. On the eve of the annual Pamplona bull run this year hundreds of half-naked protestors lay on the street with fake spears jutting from their backs with taped outlines of bulls on the floor as CSI would do at a crime scene. It was a bold and poignant protest at the San Fermin festival which attracts visitors from all over the world to witness specially-bred bulls run through the narrow streets of the town. Many of the bulls that run in the morning are tortured and killed in the bullring later in the day. Let’s be clear about this, bullfighting is not a sport. A sport is a contest where two opponents are equally matched and the outcome is undecided. It is not legalised torture and murder of a creature that has not signed up to participate.

HUMANE?: Bull running.

Bulls are deliberately weakened by being drugged, sandbags dropped onto their backs and petroleum jelly is rubbed into their eyes to blur their vision before they are repeatedly stabbed to death. Does that sound like a fair fight to you? Sound like a fun day out for all the family? I once knew a bullfighter who chopped off the end of one of his fingers with his sword. A small victory for karma but not enough. If we judge the humanity of a society based on how it treats its most vulnerable members

then Spain has not matured as a nation since medieval times. The Catalan regional government took the lead on banning bullfighting in 2010 but Spain’s constitutional court overturned this ruling in 2016 saying that the Catalan parliament had exceeded its authority in banning what the court described as an ‘expression of a cultural nature that forms part of the common cultural heritage.’ Perhaps the court thinks it’s okay to bring back burning women as witches and

hanging Jewish or Muslims people too? What about a nice spot of bear bating on a Saturday afternoon, or a game of ‘goose pulling’ on a Sunday? (This was another Spanish invention where a live goose was tied hanging from a tree and horse riders took turns to try to pull its head from its body. I know there was no ‘Love Island’ in those days, but really people!) Thankfully the Catalan minister for public works (unlike the bull) has some say in what happens and has gone on record as saying “We want a country where it is not possible to make a public spectacle of death and suffering to an animal.” Amen to that! On a more positive note, the annual ‘Salto de cabra’ festival in Managaneses de la Polvorosa where a live goat is thrown from a church bell tower, (yet another Spanish animal fun-time invention) has used a toy goat since the year 2000. If we humans aspire to even consider ourselves superior to animals (which is debatable) we have a duty of care to treat any living being that we class as ‘inferior’ with kindness, consideration and benevolence, or else the definition of ‘humane’ is very, very wrong. THIS week sees the 50th anniversary of the moon landing on July 20, 1969. Like other past memorable events, did you happen to catch it? I was allowed to stay up all night to watch. The real giveaway it was no hoax was that the pictures were dreadful and started off upside down. Armstrong’s descent was virtually indecipherable, though when Buzz followed it was clearer. I recall the breathless excitement of James Burke and Patrick Moore making a huge effort to stay professional, and holding my breath in case Armstrong disappeared in the deep dust on the moon’s surface. So much packed into that magnificent night. For one brief moment, anything was possible. We, the human race, had reason to be proud and amazed. What technology, what skill, what daring! But how dispiriting that some still believe ridiculous conspiracy theories debunking the whole thing. As physicist Professor Brian Cox says, everyone’s entitled to their own opinions but not to their own facts. I read about a guy who worked as an engineer for BBC External Services in Bush House, Aldwych, at the time. They had permanent audio feeds of the

So instead of a welcome, Arrimadas and the Cs’ contingent were met by a group wearing the white headdresses of the enslaved women of the Handmaid’s Tale and wearing robes that were Cs-orange instead of red. It was a nice touch but less nice were the bottles, drinks cans and ice-cubes that allegedly rained on Arrimadas and her party in retaliation for Cs’ willingness to use Vox to inch their way onto councils and into regional governments. The parade organisers stressed afterwards that it did not condone throwing objects at anybody. “Obviously they could join the

BARRY DUKE ONE thing stopped me from falling to my knees and kissing the ground at Alicante airport when I arrived back on July 1 from a short business trip to the UK: the fear that my lips would become fused to the smoking hot tarmac. The trip was jinxed from the outset. Shortly before my flight to the UK a geezer sprinting toward a departure gate crashed into me, and there was a sickening crack as his heavy hand luggage hit my right knee. So, for four days, during which time I had to do a great deal of walking while carrying a heavy rucksack, I hobbled about like a man on his last legs. Before I left Spain, I booked four train trips online with Southern Rail, and all I needed to do to collect them was enter a reference number into a machine at Gatwick airport. This I did - and nothing

To Hell and back happened. So, I had to queue for 30 minutes to get an assistant to issue the tickets. This took 10 minutes, because ‘something seems to be wrong with the system.’ There sure was. I found I was one ticket short of a full set. So, the whole process was repeated until I received what I’d paid for. In total, I spent an hour in the ticket hall. But far worse was to come. On boarding a train from London Victoria to Brighton, a vision of Hell confronted me when the carriage doors opened. People and their luggage occupied every square inch of space. And the heat was intolerable. Then a very large gentleman in his fifties managed to force himself on board. When he saw that he was about to travel in utterly inhumane conditions he suffered a massive panic attack, and I found myself hugging a com-

where along the line. After 20 minutes of travel, during which time people began crying and fainting as they realised they were about to miss flights from Gatwick, the train juddered to a stop and remained stationary for 30 minutes. Folk around me were now in full-on panic mode and the pain radiating from my injured knee was making me feel ill. I was recounting this hellish journey to a friend the following day, and he asked me when I intended to return to the UK. In December I replied. ‘Hmm,’ he said glumly, ‘by then you’ll probably find the country nothing but a pile of rubble, with streets patrolled by jackbooted storm troopers under the direction of Führer Farage. ‘And the Royal Family will be living in exile in Monaco!’

In a statement, Jaguar detailed how the 11-month project took 2,700 hours to complete. The brief was to make this car race-ready for classic motorsport events such as the Jaguar Classic Challenge and to make it suitable for use on the road. “Having driven a Jaguar XK120 at the Mille Miglia in 2013 and 2014, I knew that I wanted to own one of these incredibly special cars. The team at Jaguar Classic have done such a remarkable job engineering this car and executing everything that I asked for and it was amazing to have such an in-depth involvement in its creation.” A suitable 1954 base car was found in California and the engineering team at

ROAD TEST by Nick Fletcher PEUGEOT’S sleek 508 GT model has an attention-grabbing image with its low-slung coupe styling, yet it is a practical four-door fastback offering very sporty performance. Aimed at the premium executive market which includes the BMW 4 Gran Coupe and the Audi A5 Sportback, the 508 GT underlines the brilliant design talents and rising ambition of the French company. Peugeot 508 prices start at €28,196 (£25,245) with petrol and diesel options. My topspec GT model - costing €40,929 (£36,645) - had a 2.0 litre turbo-diesel unit pumping out 177 hp. Electric cars are not a new thing; they were already being manufactured in 1905. Rauch & Lang produced electric cars until 1920.

Jaguar Classic creation Jaguar Classic retained many components of the original car. The in-line six-cylinder engine was rebuilt over five and a half months. The result is a performance upgrade from the original 180bhp output to 225bhp and enhanced durability for higher speeds, with items like the core plugs featuring

steel bracing so they do not dislodge during high-speed and hard driving. Further improvements include the use of a faster-shifting racing-style gearbox which is more durable under high stresses and uprated brakes, with the front set-up now featur-

The original split-screen windscreen has been replaced by twin aero screens, another feature synonymous with the

Finished in an Aged Saddle tan leather, the seats feature a bespoke lattice design with the seatbacks finished in aluminium rather than the usual fabric material. Whilst two batteries would usually sit behind the driver’s seat, for this car the Classic team put a single battery behind the passenger seat to free up space behind the driver, to enhance comfort for 6’ 2” tall Gandy. This was also a consideration when selecting the steering wheel, which is smaller than normal, again, to provide more legroom.

Starting from second on the grid, he took advantage of a slice of luck to get past teammate Valtteri Bottas. He took advantage of a safety car to pit as the other cars slowed, which allowed him him to re-emerge still in the lead. He never looked back, with a flawless drive until the finishing line. Bottas was second in the race, with Charles Leclerc in third. Pierre Gasly, Max Verstappen, Carlos Sainz, Daniel Ricciardo, Kimi Raikkonen, Daniil Kyvat and Nico Hulkenberg completed the top 10. The gap between Hamilton and Bottas in the overall standings widened to 38 points. It is
