Royal visitor

By Dilip Kuner MALLORCA has a royal visitor this week as Queen Letizia opened the Atlàntida Film Fest.

And it was a red letter night for British film director Ken Loach as he was presented with the prestige Premi Masters of Cinema award for his services to the film world.

More than 400 people attended the opening at the Castell de Bellver (Palma).

Dressed in a simple white trousers and black top outfit, the Queen was received b y t h e f e s t i v a l d i r e c t o r, Jaume Ripoll.

Fernando León de Aranoa presented the Masters of Cinema Award to an emotional Ken Loach, to standing applause.

Defined in a video as “leftist and subversive,” the director said that “we need all the cinemas and for that we need politicians. When a community has cinemas, it can have variety.”

There is still time to attend the festival - it runs until Sunday, July 7, with screenings, conferences and concerts in Es Baluard, CineCiutat, Bellver C a s t l e , S e s Vo l t e s , C a n’Oleo, Can Balaguer and Antiga Presó.

Torture accuser jailed ONE of two British men who accused four Guardia Civil officers of torturing them has been jailed for raping a woman in Liverpool.

Christopher Bahadur, now 39, claimed that the police officers had in 2009 repeatedly assaulted them while they were being held in custody in Palmanova.

The Supreme Court, in November 2015, acquitted the four Guardia Civil officers on appeal.

The court pointed out that the ‘victims’ had never backed up their complaints before a court.

One of them did not appear in court and the other issued a notarial deed acknowledging that they had made a false complaint.

Amanda Navarro and her family had been living i n a shar ed f l at i n son Servera when she saw a flat advertised on the internet on the Paseo Marítimo de Palma, for a price of €450 per month.

Although suspicious of the low price she contacted and met the ‘landlord.’

Her husband made enquiries about the man and got back positive reports.

Eventually they signed a 10- year cont r act and handed over a deposit despi t e t he f act t hey had never been i nsi de t he apartment as ‘it still had tenants living there.’

It was only when they packed t hei r bags and tried to move in that they discovered they were the victims of a scam.

The ‘ l andl or d’ never turned up and they were literally left on the street unable to return to their previous home as it had al r eady been l et t o new tenants.

Drugs charge PALMA court has jailed a man for three-and-a-half years, suspended for five years, after he admitted possessing €7,149 worth of cocaine with intent to supply.

Stash found POLICE have arrested three people - two men aged 25 and 35 and a woman aged 40 - after discovering a marihuana plantation in a squatted house in Son Cladera.

They seized 3.5 kilos of the drug, cash, precision scales and indoor farming equipment.

600 people evacuated SIX people were taken to hospital, 30 treated for smoke inhalation and 600 evacuated during a hotel fire in Mallorca.

Firefighters from Mallorca, Llucmajor, Calvia and Inca stations joined colleagues from Palma, as well as Local Police and medics at 5am on Tuesday.

They were called to the three-star Whala Beach Hotel, in calle Miramar, S’Arenal, after a fire broke out in one of the rooms.

The 30 suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation were treated at the scene.

MEXICAN magnate Alonso Ancira has been released from custody after paying a €1million bond.

Known as ‘The King of Steel,’ he was arrested at Palma airport a month ago at the request of the Mexican authorities. Ancira, president of the Altos Hornos de México (Ahmsa), steel company, is accused by Mexican authorities of corruption and money laundering, which he denies.

He was bailed with conditions; he has surrendered his passport, must not leave Spain and must report to the court every two days.

Winning bridge THIS bridge in northern Spain has been named the second best in the world by an industry association.

The Puente de Rande, in Vigo, Galicia, was named the second best by the International Association of Bridges and Structural Engineering (IABSE).

A jury of 100 engineers judged and ranked the bridges. The Puente de Rande came ahead of Britain’s Mersey Gateway and behind Mukogawa in Japan.

IABSE said the bridge’s sustainable and environmentally-friendly design

were among the reasons it came second.

The Puente de Rande is a cablestayed bridge which spans the Vigo bay across a strait which gives the bridge its name. It links the towns of Redondela and Moaña.

Engineers Fabrizio de Miranda, from Italy and Spain’s Florencio del Pozo and Alfredo Passaro designed the bridge.

Construction began in 1973 and it opened in 1981. The bridge won the Outstanding European Metal Construction Award in 1979.

The Puente de Rande is more than 1,600 metres long and its pillars are 148 metres high. It was the longest cable-stayed bridge in Spain and one of the longest in the world when it was built.

Around 50,000 vehicles cross the bridge every day on average and an estimated 231 million have gone over it since its opening.

Galicia’s Audasa infrastructure authority began works to widen the bridge in 2016 at an estimated cost of almost €108 million. They were completed in December 2017.

Rockfall death A 24-YEAR-OLD woman has died and her boyfriend has been seriously injured when a large rock fell on them in Cala Vinyes, Calvia.

The woman was killed instantly and the man was left with his legs trapped under the half tonne rock. They had been sitting on it taking in the romantic view when it slipped and gave way. The woman was thrown into a ravine then crushed by the rock just before midnight on Monday.

The man, aged 25, managed to alert emergency services and was rescued by the fire brigade then taken to Son Espases hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

It took the firefighters from several stations plus forestry rescue workers more than two hours to free the man’s legs using hydraulic cushions. He has severe injuries to his crushed limbs.

FOLLOW US ON

Swifts recovery HUNDREDS of swifts have had to be rescued as the recent heatwave sent them crashing to the ground.

O v e r t h e w e e k e n d t h e C e n t re f o r R e c o v e r y o f Wildlife of Mallorca (Cofib) took in 215 of the birds, which had all been found fluttering on the ground.

Normally swifts never land because if they do, they cannot get airborne again. It is thought that due to the heat they were either simply too exhausted to keep flying or were searching for cooler conditions.

Without the intervention of animal lovers who picked them up and took them to the centre, they w o u l d h a v e b e e n d o o m e d . N o w t h e y a re b e i n g nursed back to health to be released as soon as it is safe to do so. In total the centre took in 253 animals over the weekend.

FIREFIGHTERS were called in to rescue a dog that had accidently been trapped on a balcony in the full glare of the sun.

Local Police called in Palma firemen to help reach the pooch which was stuck on a fourth-floor balcony and appeared to be suffering from heat exhaustion.

The canine had spent all morning in the sun in the midst of the heatwave. The animal was rescued and taken to a vet with symptoms of heat stroke.

Police remind people that it is important to ensure that pets are kept in shade in a cool spot with plenty of water available.

Black flags for beaches ENVIRONMENTAL group Ecologistas en Accion has awarded ‘black flags’ to beaches in Santa Margalida and Andratx.

In the case of Santa Margalida the group says the biggest pollution problem comes from the lack of an efficient sewage works. It points out that the Son Bosc wastewater treatment plant dates from 1990. It lacks the necessary tertiary treatment needed to

comply with regulations for discharges into the bay.

In the case of Andratx, Ecologistas en Accion points to the construction of a mega hotel complex in Camp de Mar as the cause of the poor environmental management of the coastal zone.

The new complex will extend over 40,000 sqm and its construction “is a milestone in unbridled tourism in the Balearics.”

White slave trade arrests TWENTY-TWO people have been arrested in Palma for sexually exploiting women and transsexuals.

Other charges they face relate to drug trafficking, illegal immigration, workers’ rights, membership of a criminal organisation and crimes against public health.

The detainees are aged between 21 and 51 and are of Bulgarian, Brazilian, Spanish, Colombian, Italian and Portuguese nationalities.

Two of them are accused of drug trafficking. Four others who run two wellknown prostitution clubs are charged with trafficking in human beings for the purpose of sexual exploitation, facilitation of illegal immigration, membership of a criminal organisation and crimes against public health.

The remaining six arrests from the first phase of the operation worked in the brothels and were arrested for being illegally in Spain.

In a second phase of the operation a well-known lawyer was found to be arranging fictitious marriages between citizens of the European Union and illegal immigrants. A total of 10 people were arrested on false documentation and illegal immigration charges.

Wedding inquiry ENVIRONMENTAL officers have opened a file after an open air wedding was held in dunes at Es Trenc de Mallorca beach.

Fifty guests celebrated the nuptials over an area of 459 sqm in the zone which is a Special Protection Area for birds.

Officers have now interviewed the owner of the land over a possible infraction of environmental laws.

Smoke screen A PINE forest fire led to traffic being halted on the Via Cintura towards Cala Major due to smoke on Monday, with 15 firefighters, two water planes and two helicopters rapidly bringing it under control.

Big welcome THE Balearic Islands welcomed a total of 3,474,876 foreign tourists in the first five months of the year, representing an increase of 4.8 per cent over the same period last year, making it the second most visited community after Cataluña.

Balconing fines in Magaluf THREE tourists in the Mallorcan district of Calvia have been fined for balconing, so far this year.

Local laws mean people recklessly jumping from balconies into pools or clambering from one balcony to another face fines of between €600 and €1,500. It is not to be confused with people who accidentally fall.

Anyone encouraging or incitin g o th e rs to in d u lge in this reckless behaviour is also liable to be fined.

The by-law was introduced in 2016 after a string of balconing deaths and serious injuries. Last year 11 fines were handed out in

Branches fell SEVERAL cars were damaged in the Corea district of Palma when several tree branches came crashing down.

The city’s firefighters removed the branches and cleared the area and prepared a report on the condition of the trees to prevent further such incidents. No one was hurt by the branches.

Now animal welfare group Actúa has demanded the immediate withdrawal of licences from the fined drivers for endangering the lives of their animals.

Spokesman for the group Guillermo Amengual said that these drivers “make fun of the laws and regulations because they know that nothing is going to happen to them.

“They have been doing it for many years. If the current ordinance was enforced, these drivers would have lost their licences.”

Ex worker arrested POLI CE have ar r est ed a m an accused of st eal i ng €150,000 from a restaurant he used to work in.

The cash had been hidden on the Coll d’en Rabassa, Palma premises. Evidence pointed to the former employee, said police, and they eventually tracked him down to a luxury house in Petra he was renting.

Police seized €28,000 in cash, documents and the keys to a car he had just bought.

The investigation is ongoing, and police expect to make further arrests.

Unfortunately for her, the baby decided to arrive before the bus did, so it was left to a Local Police patrol to help welcome the new born into this world.

An ambulance crew arrived soon afterwards to take over and confirmed that mother and ba-

The drama had started when the woman realised the birth was imminent and it was time to go to hospital.

But rather than catch a taxi she, her husband and their young son walked to the bus stop at around midnight.

The proud father thanked the police officers profusely, then asked them what the name of the street was. From that moment on he started to call the new born ‘Llaut.’

Coin cyclist national cycling champion COIN local Carmelo Urbano has secured victory for the Sub-23 Andalucia Team after being proclaimed the new Spanish road race champion.

Urbano completed the 157.8-kilometre route ending in Lorca in Murcia on Saturday in four hours, three minutes and 31 seconds, 13 seconds ahead of second-placed Arturo Gravalos, and 25 seconds before Oier Ibarguren in third.

The cyclist is seen as one of the most important rising national cycling stars.

Somebody’s goat is missing VALENCIA City’s Local Police are seeking the owner of a goat found wandering along one of the city’s busiest streets.

The animal was discovered in the morning in Avenida Pio XII and taken to the nearby Campanar district police station in case someone had reported it missing.

The discovery has since been announced on the Valencia force’s social media pages, but if it is not claimed the goat will be taken to the Centre de Animales Exoticos in the Nazaret neighbourhood.

Squabbles at EU summit THE US urged Spain to lead the EU in diplomatic negotiations with Venezuela and Cuba during the EU Summit in Madrid last week.

The American Ambassador in Spain has accused the Nicolas Maduro regime of stealing more than three billion dollars of public funds and signing an agreement with Russia. The Ambassador and the US foreign office have urged Spain to put pressure on Maduro by offering military aid to his rival Juan Guaidó and freezing the dictator’s assets.

Cash machine saving energy THE BBVA bank has installed the country’s first ‘sustainable’ cash machine at its Madrid headquarters in a bid to cut energy use.

The bank’s new machine is made of recycled and recyclable materials and its 25 per cent lighter than traditional cash points.

All its features are designed to reduce its environmental impact including where its parts are sourced from.

BBVA is aiming for environmentallyfriendly versions of its machines to be in place by 2020.

BREXIT BRIEF THE recovery of rival holiday destinations will have more of an impact on British tourists opting to travel to Spain than Brexit will, according to Britain’s Ambassador to Spain.

Simon Manley said at an event organised by the Madrid Business Forum that the years since the 2016 Brexit referendum have seen record numbers of British tourists holidaying to Spain.

Former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and current post occupant Jeremy Hunt have set out their stall on Brexit ahead of Monday July 22’s ballot of Conservative party members.

It comes as the Labour opposition continues to grapple with its Brexit approach, with leader Jeremy Corbyn facing mounting pressure to adopt a clear position.

Johnson and Hunt’s supporters played down the prospect of a no-deal after Hunt said he would be prepared to leave without an agreement but would do so with a ‘heavy-heart.’ Hunt added he would set aside about €6.7 billion to deal with a nodeal.

McDonnell told Sky News he would publicly back remain, but was willing to wait for Corbyn to build a consensus on one policy. Labour currently supports putting Brexit to a vote but has not said which side it would back. A general election remains the party’s preferred option.

By Joe Gerrard MEMBERS of the acting left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) government are aiming to form a coalition this month as the countdown to an investiture vote begins this week.

Acting Deputy Prime Minister Carmen Calvo said PSOE’s investiture was the only political option after it won the most seats in April’s election, but fell short of a majority.

“We will be clear about what basis we want to lead the country on,” Calvo said.

She spoke as Acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez met with President of the Congress of Deputies Meritxell Batet to fix a date for the investiture vote.

Sanchez and PSOE are courting smaller parties in Congress to get the 176 votes they need to be voted in.

But the two parties have struggled to agree on what co-operation would look like. Iglesias has pushed to have Podemos Congress members appointed to ministerial positions, but Sanchez

said PSOE was only prepared to offer low-level government posts.

Calvo claimed the decision was due to the fact a coalition between PSOE and Podemos would still leave the government 11 seats shy of a majority.

Comments from other leading PSOE figures hint the party is losing patience and is anxious to form a government sooner rather than later.

PSOE spokesperson Adriana Lastra said her party wanted ‘responsibility’ from Podemos after Iglesias suggested he might try to stall the government’s investiture until September.

“This isn’t Game of Thrones,” Lastra said.

Internal factors in Podemos also mean backing a PSOE government is not a straightforward move. The party’s haemorrhaging of votes in recent elections has created pressure for them to find their own identity rather than throw their lot in with PSOE. Sanchez and PSOE figures have not ruled out calling fresh elections if the deal falls through.

Internal strife THE centrist Ciudadanos entered a crisis last week after a number of high profile members questioned its drift to the right, with some resigning in protest.

Several members of the party’s executive committee said they would quit over leader Albert Rivera’s refusal to support a government led by the left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE).

The party has shown a greater willingness to deal with the conservative Partido Popular (PP) and the far-right Vox in recent months. Ciudadanos agreed to join a Vox-backed coalition with the PP in Andalucia in December and it also struck similar deals with both following local elections in May. Party members in its Catalan heartland broke ranks with the leadership and backed sitting leftist Barcelona mayor Ana Colau to block Vox’s entry into local government.

Internal divisions in Ciudadanos were previously summed up by its candidate for Barcelona mayor Manuel Valls, who said its dealings with the far-right ran counter to its progressive, liberal values.

The party appears to be straining under the contradictions of its strategy. Rivera is thought to be positioning the party as the leading opposition force against PSOE, but his right-turn has alienated liberal supporters.

What to do in the event of an emergency in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics.

HERE in Spain there is a general number for all emergencies, 112.

No area code is needed and the number can be called from any phone, including mobiles without a Spanish SIM card.

The responders speak a number of languages, and you can also fax or SMS 112.

In addition, there are individual emergency numbers, depending on the type of assistance you need.

It’s a good idea to keep a printout of them handy, in your bag or wallet, in the home and in the car.

And it can’t hurt to have a few helpful Spanish medical/emergency terms written down, just in case you don’t get an English-speaking member of staff.

National Police, also known as National Police Corps (Cuerpo Nacional de Policia, CNP), deals with criminal offences and public order in towns and cities, and can be contacted by calling 091 or 902 102 112.

The latter was set up for non-Spanish to report burglaries, car theft or a break-in when documents and belongings are lost or stolen. Available in English from 9am to 2pm, all week long, the service is also available in French, German and Italian.

Once the telephone report is made,

claimants have 48 hours to check and sign their statement at the police station of their choice.

In the case of robbery, where threat or force has been used, victims should call 091 at the time, then go directly to a police station to make a report.

The Guardia Civil is a military force which operates mostly in rural areas and is responsible for drug offences, fatal car accidents, robberies and murders, and can be contacted on 062.

Local Police (Policia municipal) cover their local town or city area for traffic offences and control, lost property and crimes such as theft and neighbourhood disputes. You can reach them on 092.

And a special helpine, 016, has been set up specifically to report instances of gender violence.

For an ambulance (ambulancia) and health emergencies, call 061 or 112, and in the case of a fire call the fire brigade (cuerpo de bomberos) on 061 or 112.

For problems at sea, the Maritime Rescue Service (Salvamento Seguridad Maritmo) can be contacted by calling 900 202 202, and the Red Cross (Cruz Rojo) on 902 222 292. There is also a Red Cross 24- hour helpline 900 100 333.

Lagging behind SPAIN now spends less on international aid than it did in 1990, in terms of gross national income.

It means that of major countries, it is the nation which has reduced aid the most. It has declined five times more than the Netherlands, which is second on the list of countries where aid contributions have fallen.

While the trend for members of the Development Assistance Committee since 2018 has seen a rise of 24.5 per cent, Spain has reduced payments by 55.7 per cent.

These figures have just been released by Oxfam Intermon in its report La realidad de la ayuda 2019 (The Reality of Aid 2019), an exhaustive study that the NGO publishes every year analysing Spain’s contributions in comparison with other donor countries.

The NGO wants Spain to

put in place a plan to reach the European aid average of 0.5 per cent of gross national income compared to the 0.2 per cent it spends now.

Provisional figures for 2018 show aid contributions continuing to fall. In 2017 Spain gave €2.25 billion, last year €2.146 billion.

Stockholders oust founders

SHAREHOLDERS of the Codere gambling company formally ousted its president and CEO and vice-president at its annual general meeting.

Stockholders voted to replace Jose Antonio and Luis Javier Martinez Sampedro with Alberto Manzanares and Fernando Sempere, according to information given to Spain’s National Securities Market Commission (CNMV) regulator. Norman Sorensen has taken office as president.

The Martinez Sampedro brothers, who founded Codere, said they are considering legal action. It comes as the company posted net losses of €9.4 million during the 2018 financial year.

Spain’s rate of inflation in June according to the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) which registered the lowest level in almost three years according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

Billions owed in tax bills A TOTAL of 4,028 Spanish taxpayers owe more than €14.1 billion, according to the Tax Agency which found there were 6.7 per cent less debtors than last year.

Tax Agency figures found the total amount owed to the Treasury was 7.8 per cent less than last year. It comes as the agency published its list of debtors who owe more than €1 million following tax returns for the last financial year.

Companies linked to the construction and property sectors were among the individuals, entities and firms with the highest outstanding debts.

By Joe Gerrard Many of those companies were left with hefty tax bills after earnings were hit following the property market crash in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis.

Reyel Urbis owed the Treasury €353.2 million after paying off around €8 million over the previous year.

Martinsa-Fadesa, who’s folding led to the biggest bankruptcy case in Spain at the time, still owes €50.3 million.

Figures on the list included Rodrigo Rato, former deputy prime minister to Jose Maria Aznar.

Rato owes more than €1 million to

the Treasury and is currently in prison for his part in the ‘Black’ corruption scandal.

Nueva Rumasa, one of the firms owned by the Ruiz Mateos family of tycoons, owes €8.9 million. Former Real Madrid President Lorenzo Sanz owes about €1.35 million.

Two subsidiaries of the Andaluciabased Abengoa Group, Abengoa Abenewco and Abengoa Energia, owe more than €2 million and €1.1 million respectively.

Footballer Daniel Alves and artist Miguel Bose were among those who cleared their debts as of this year.

THE Basque Country-based Tubos Reunidos steelmaker has unveiled plans to make €40 million in earnings excluding tax and financial deductions (EBITDA) by 2021.

The company said Plan 40 aimed to boost partnerships with other firms, suppliers and customers.

No jobs will be axed under the plan, the firm added.

Tubos Reunidos currently has an order book of €128 million, company figures presented at its annual shareholder meeting show. It comes as the company recently closed a deal with its creditors to refinance debts amounting to €351 million.

FORECASTS: LetterOne hopes to boost Dia’s sales.

Dia owner’s high hopes THE Dia supermarket chain will have net sales figures of between €7 billion and €7.2 billion, according to forecasts included in its new owner’s business plan.

Private equity firm LetterOne, which bought the struggling supermarket chain earlier this year, said sales would approach 2018 levels in 2020 before rising each year until 2023.

Dia’s owners said new lines of financing and capital investments would help to consolidate the company’s position and make it viable in the long term.

It comes after losses of almost €352.6 million in 2018 created doubt about the future of Dia until it changed hands.

REPRESENTATIVES of Spanish mining companies called on the Spanish government to fastrack extraction projects so the industry can create jobs, take advantage of high overseas demand and cut imports at a Madrid conference last week.

Store sales THE El Corte Ingles department chain and the Inditex fashion group launched their summer sales online and in store last week, with both beginning seasonal discounts ahead of the traditional start date of July 1.

Wine exports THE amount of Spanish-made wine sold abroad was 706.6 million litres, a year-on-year rise of 7 per cent according to the Spanish Observatory of the Wine Market (OEMV) which found earnings fell by 7.7 per cent.

Incomes back at pre-crisis levels AVERAGE earnings in Spain stood at €11,412 a year in 2017, the first time in nine years the figure has been higher than pre-crisis levels according to a new study.

The National Institute of Statistics (INE) found average earnings increased by 3.1 per cent from 2016 to 2017.

It was the first time earnings were above 2008’s average of €11,318. That year saw the

global financial crisis break out which plunged Spain, Europe and much of the world into recession.

The INE found household incomes averaged at €28,417 in 2017. That figure is still below the more than €30,000 average recorded in 2009.

About 10.4 per cent of households said they faced financial difficulty towards the end of the month in 2018, up 1.1 per cent year-on-year.

Euro and US dollar pressured, pound flounders due to Brexit

Euro EUR/GBP: Up from £0.87 to £0.89 EUR/USD: Up from $1.11 to $1.12 Despite rising bets that the European Central Bank (ECB) would likely take a more dovish stance on Eurozone monetary policy, the euro put in a much stronger performance earlier in June, climbing against weaker rivals.

The euro then rebounded strongly as its rival the US dollar tumbled. However, as global trade tensions continued to worsen and key Eurozone data fell short of forecasts, investors became concerned that the ECB was not dovish enough about the economic outlook.

That changed this week, when ECB President Mario Draghi indicated that the bank would loosen monetary policy if inflation did not improve. This week’s Eurozone inflation report also fell short of expectations

EUROZONE INFLATION: Fell short of expectations month-on-month. month-on-month.

The euro slipped today, but its gains were limited as the more dovish ECB stance wasn’t entirely surprising either. The euro may have room to advance again if the US dollar remains weak, or if upcoming major Eurozone ecostats show that the economy is recovering more strongly.

Pound GBP/EUR: Down from €1.13 to €1.11

GBP/USD: Down from $1.27 to $1.25 The pound has easily been among the worst-performing major currencies over the past month or so. While the pound’s losses have slowed since the end of May, it continues to weaken as no-deal Brexit concerns resurface.

Brief periods of support offered by signs of UK economic strength have been short-lived, with a lot of major

UK data showing that economic activity remains limited by Brexit uncertainties.

The main focus for pound investors this month has been the Conservative Party leadership contest, which officially began last week and will run into July.

Hard Brexit advocate Boris Johnson is the frontrunner, and he has indicated he would rather embrace a nodeal Brexit than delay the process

again to secure a deal with the EU. Developments in the leadership contest and how they may influence the pound outlook are likely to dominate pound movement in the coming weeks.

US Dollar USD/GBP: Up from £0.78 to £0.79 USD/EUR: Unmoved at €0.89 After a particularly strong May, the US dollar (USD) has seen wide fluctuations in June.

Earlier in the month, rising protectionist rhetoric from Donald Trump combined with signs of weakness in the US economy led to a surge in expectations that the Federal Reserve would be pressured to cut interest rates over the next year.

While speculation that these rate cut expectations were overdone helped the US dollar to recover against a weak pound (GBP) and euro (EUR) in the middle of the month, there is still potential for the US currency to fall further.

Investors are anticipating the Federal Reserve’s June policy decision, as well as other major US ecostats that could influence the outlook for the Fed and the US dollar.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT DELIGHTED to report that at the time of writing my lovely family is gathering to celebrate the arrival of my eighth decade. My estranged spouse Pauline, with whom I remain good friends, was one of those coming from Ireland accompanied by my son David. They were flying with easyJet and Pauline was travelling for the first time on her new Irish passport.

All initially went well at Belfast International and, with bags duly checked in, they presented themselves at the boarding gate. Some friends of Pauline went through first, closely followed by my son. Pauline subsequently offered up her passport and boarding card to the young lady at the desk - and that’s when the problems began.

Scrutinising the passport the ground crew member turned to Pauline and to her complete surprise informed her that the name on her passport didn’t match the one on her boarding card.

She than pointed out although the passport displayed the name of Pauline Graham, (her married name) the boarding card said Pauline Devine. Although somewhat taken aback, but undeterred, Pauline then showed her that on the passport’s adjoining ‘remarks’ page the Embassy had typed in ‘Birth certificate name Pauline Devine.’

another ground crew member then decided to move into the conversation. And she was ‘one of those!’ Apparently holding more authority than the first girl, she proceeded to snatch the Passport and in extremely loud and overbearing tones, not only informed Pauline that she would not be al-

lowed to board the plane, but sneeringly added that the information on the remarks page had in ‘no way been printed by the Embassy’ and was ‘even in a crooked line.’

Needless to say Pauline was now utterly embarrassed and completely taken aback. This un-

pleasant member of staff was, in front of a line of passengers, actually accusing her of illegally tampering with her own passport. It got worse. She then curtly told Pauline - ‘Pay us £80 and we’ll let you board the flight.’ Pauline naturally asked her to explain the reason. ‘Name change fee’ snapped the woman. With hackles now rising and not at all satisfied with this curt explanation, Pauline then informed her that she didn’t in fact have £80.

My son David, on hearing the confrontation had now returned to the gate. The women promptly asked him if he had £80. When he said that he hadn’t, David then added they had to get on as they were en route to celebrate his Dad’s birthday and that all their friends were already on the plane? ‘Ring them then’ snapped the woman.

‘Get one of them to come back and pay the £80.’

With this suggestion utterly out of the question and tempers becoming decidedly frayed, Pauline now realised that they could now quite easily miss the flight and possibly even my birthday.

She decided to abandon her principles and, even though the reasons were still not clear, reluctantly carded the £80 and was finally allowed to board.

The next day I telephoned easyJet for an explanation. To be continued…

I HAVE an uncle who lives in Nigeria. Called Borris. Yes, really. That’s how he spells his name. Oh, and I’m Norra.

Anyway, I got an email from my uncle in Nigeria yesterday. Not only did he introduce himself and apologise for not getting in contact with me earlier in my ‘lieftime,’ he wants to send me money. Lots. £1.5 million, to be exact.

And he only needs me to send him £150 so he can prepare the parcel to send me the money!

What, you’ve got an uncle in Nigeria, too?

The one who needed money when stranded and mugged in London, losing all his cash and credit cards? And an aunt too? The one who’s always sending you those nice emails?

Isn’t surprising how so many of us have relatives in Nigeria - aren’t we just one big happy family?

Every day, millions receive these bogus ‘419’ emails (so-called after a section of Nigeria’s legal code) promising millions. They’re such obvious scams it’s hard to imagine anyone falls for them. Yet police estimate that US citizens alone are annually conned out of $200m plus. And the British National Crimi-

nal Intelligence Service estimates the average loss in the UK is £35,000 plus.

The sender claims to be a banker, bureaucrat, ‘royal’ toadie wanting to shift vast sums your way. But no money’s to be shifted... except yours - for the greasing of palms and acquisition of imaginary legal documents.

Other versions play on your loneliness, charity or naïveté (you can’t win a lottery you didn’t enter). Fake job offer, orphan, dead bank customer, cancer patient: same weaponised scam. I’ve written before about this, but if repeated publicity saves just one more person from being conned...

Finally, 5,000 people were the victims of holiday booking fraud last year, with their total losses amounting to £7m. Travel associa-

tion ABTA said victims lost an average of £1,380 each, having bought bogus airline tickets, accommodation or organised tours. It said scammers were using increasingly sophisticated methods to target people looking for ‘good deals.’

Boris refuses to discuss the goings on at his girlfriend’s flat because it’s nothing to do with the great British unwashed, but the next day releases a picture of them having a nice little drink somewhere.

The only problem is that picture was taken sometime before and for some reason the BJ publicity machine thought noone would notice that his hair is long in that picture and on the day of the punch up it was short. Just another BJ lie. The man is a disgrace. Forget about the lies he told about Brexit.

In November 2004, Boris Johnson was shadow arts minister under Michael Howard, Conservative Vice-Chair, and editor of the Spectator when it was reported in multiple tabloids that he had a years-long affair with one of the magazine’s columnists, which had resulted in two terminated pregnancies. He denied it and when it was proven, he lied. He was asked to resign, but refused. So he was sacked again, for dishonesty! The man’s just a pathological liar.

But my biggest grump with him and, to be honest, with all politicians is their refusal to answer a direct question with a simple yes or no. In BJ’s case it’s even worse. He won’t even go on TV and debate his policies with Hunt.

If I was conducting an agreed interview, I would ask him a question and say I just need a yes or no answer. If he went off on a waffle fest, I’d just say, OK interview over BJ, on yer bike son. If you can’t give a simple answer to a simple question, I’m not wasting my time with you. And, I would do that with every one of them.

Or maybe they should all preface every answer with ‘I refuse to answer on the grounds that it may incriminate me’ then everyone can make their own minds up.

TO the Editor Now there’s nothing us Brits like more than a good whinge. So here’s my tuppence worth: It’s too hot, too many tourists, too much ‘foreign’ food, the coffee and the food come out lukewarm at best, too much late night partying, too many fireworks, the sausages are pants, the Spanish don’t always speak English, there’s too many French, too many Germans, the Spanish drivers are terrible, you can only get lager, the crisps aren’t the same, the restaurants don’t open until late, the newspapers are expensive and often a day late, they don’t show cricket on the television, there’s too many bank holidays, the shops don’t open on a Sunday, the police aren’t friendly, there’s too much paperwork…

I miss England, as then I would really have something serious to whinge about!

African migrants HI Leapy Thanks for your great articles.

I see in the letter section a reader thinks Spain should give all the arriving African migrants a job, house and anything else they might need.

Why do people in Europe think it is their responsibility to do this.

Most of the migrants are sub-Saharan Africans whose governments are to blame for their circumstances. Also do they not realise that by encouraging them the current trickle will turn into a flood which will change Spain beyond recognition and not for the better.

THE G20 summit wrapped up in Osaka, Japan on Saturday.

Decisions taken there and exchanges between leaders offered telling clues on the state of international relations.

All except the US reaffirmed their commitment to the Paris Climate Accords. Strong environmental positions from Spain’s acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Britain’s Theresa May ahead of the summit were also encouraging.

But international commitments to cut emissions appear hollow when they do not include the world’s second-worst polluter.

Exchanges with leaders were also watched closely. A video appearing to show US President Donald Trump pointing out Sanchez’s chair and telling him to sit down was seen as a snub.

Other reports said the much-maligned president told Sanchez he ‘loved’ Spain, although his sincerity on matters of the heart is questionable.

A lesser reported on but perhaps more interesting exchange saw Sanchez warmly greet Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince and de factor ruler Mohamed Bin Salman.

The Spanish defence industry’s dealings with the Saudis may have led Sanchez to offer the hand of friendship.

But ample evidence linking Bin Salman to journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s killing and his country’s devastating military intervention in Yemen make such encounters difficult to watch.

Smiling with a leader whose warplanes continue to drop bombs on innocent people does not make for progressive leadership.

Rubbish piles up as refuse collection strike drags on People have to have the right to protest if they’re being taken advantage of and the fact it’s ‘inconveniencing’ us is their only way to get the council to the negotiating table. Green is predominantly connected with nature, good health, positive power, balance or even envy - a store will use this to tell customers they are environmentally conscious.

Orange is enthusiasm and attention - like traffic lights for instance

and many posters in shops have an orange colour to get your attention.

Yellow gives us sunshine, happiness, energy, warmth, emotionality used by many all over the world as the colour for hope.

Black, which like white is not actually a colour, stands for power, evil, unhappiness, negativity, but also strength and intelligence.

White is the colour of clean, safe, pure, innocence, creativity.

Brown is connected with being strong, reliable, warm and friendly.

And while purple can be mysterious and represent mystery and wealth, pink can be the colour of kindness and romance.

But most of all, let colours inspire you in a positive wonderful way whatever meaning people are giving to them.

Just use the colours in your life the way you want them to be used.

A visit to the charity’s online workshop saw the queen try out virtual reality glasses which are used by patients during treatment.

Homes prices on the up THE price of used housing in Spain rose 1.7 per cent during the second quarter of 2019 to an average €1,733p/sqm according to the latest Idealista price index.

This means housing prices have risen 6 per cent so far this year. According to Fernando Encinar, head of studies at Idealista, this “repeats the pattern we saw in the previous quarter. Housing prices continue to rise across the board, although the increases are much milder.

“It is worth noting some exceptions, such as the archipelagos, where the strength of tourism continues to tighten prices. Also striking is the situation of Barcelona, where prices have for the first time since June 2014 seen a year-onyear decline, which although very moderate, could mark a turning point in the Catalan capital.”

The popular tourism areas have seen the biggest increases.

By autonomous community the leader was Andalucia, home to the Costa del Sol, where owners are asking 4.3 per cent more for their homes than three months ago.

Next is Valencia, which takes in the Costa Blanca, where prices have risen 3.1 per cent in the same period and Murcia (2.8 per cent). They are followed by rises in Aragon (2.6 per cent), Madrid (2.5 per cent) and Melilla (2.2 per cent).

Navarre saw the greatest fall, with a decrease of 1.5 per cent, followed by Ceuta, where prices fell by 1 per cent and Asturias (-0.9 per cent).

The Balearic Islands continues to be the most expensive autonomous region, at 3,016 euros/sqm. Next is Madrid (2,826 euros/sqm), Euskadi (2,563 euros/sqm) and Cataluña (2,256 euros/sqm). On the opposite side of the table are Castilla La Mancha (871 euros/sqm), Extremadura (902 euros/sqm) and Murcia (1,026 euros/sqm).

By province the biggest increases were led by Teruel (6.5 per cent), followed by Malaga (4.9 per cent), Girona (4.8 per cent), Lleida (3.7 per cent) and Zaragoza (3 per cent).

Bad news travels faster than good news I have noticed that bad news travels so much faster than good news. Social Media is a perfect example of this. People post about the death of a celebrity that they have never met faster than the good news about people they know.

It is also a truism that people question good things they hear about others but accept bad things without proof. Psychologists call this ‘Negativity Bias,’ a collective hunger to hear and remember (and I would argue share) bad news.

In lab experiments people respond quicker to words such as ‘cancer,’ ‘bomb’ or ‘war’ than they do to ‘baby,’ ‘smile’ or ‘fun.’ This is because we have evolved quicker reactions to potential threats. Bad news is potentially dangerous so we respond to it quicker.

There is another theory: that most of us are natural optimists and therefore our rosy view of the world is rocked more when we are exposed to bad news. Against a light background dark spots are more visible. That gives me hope for humanity, but then it would because I am an optimist!

LAURA PENN ‘PENN TO PAPER’ I WAS accused of being an optimist this week.

I use the word ‘accused’ deliberately because the person who was speaking spat it at me like it was a bad thing.

Intrigued, I looked up the definition of ‘optimist’ with our old friend Google. I learnt that THE Optimist is a pub in Upminster and AN Optimist is a small single-handed dinghy. Also that (according to the Oxford English Dictionary) an optimist is ‘a person who always expects good things to happen or things to be successful.’

Guilty as charged! I mean who else believed that Real Mallorca would get promoted back into the Premier Division?

Maybe my irritating optimism has some basis in the fact that I rejected watching television news many years ago. When do you ever see positive stories there? I am aware of safeguarding my own absorption of negativity and consciously avoid the people or things that spread it around.

What should I do in the case of a car accident?

WITH temperatures soaring it’s a great feeling for all expats in this tranquilo environment; tranquilo that is until the influx of tourists, especially from Britain and the rest of Europe.

With extra cars and drivers who are more used to driving on the left, an increase in the risk of traffic accidents is inevitable.

Always make sure your tyre pressures are correct by checking them at least once a month, and keep radiator levels topped up. It’s also illegal to run out of screen wash, so make sure this is topped up too.

When it is safe, take pictures of the vehicles involved, damage, road signs, etc.

Get statements and contact information from any witnesses.

The road to rescue is rocky!

ANOTHER two rescued equines arrived at Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre last week, but as always there were many

BARRY DUKE ANYONE with an atom of sense knows that if you buy eggs you place them at the top of your shopping bag or trolley and not at the bottom where they will inevitably be cru sh e d b y o t h e r p u rchases.

And that’s exactly what I did last Friday afternoon after bu y i n g a t r a y o f 2 4 .

Then disaster struck. A little old lady lost her balance on the bus in which I was travelling and crashed into my shopping bag. There was a sickening crunch.

When I got home, I knew the bag would be a horror, but I u n d e r e st i m a t e d th e sheer scale of the mishap.

All but one of the eggs had broken, and a week’s shopping beneath was soaked in yolk and albumen.

This was the third of a number of incidents that set me thinking that I’d somehow a n n o y e d E r i s, th e Greek goddess of strife and

more calls for help regarding such animals.

EHCRC already has nearly 120 rescued horses, ponies and

donkeys and it is logistically impossible for them to take every animal that people ask them to. They have to focus their attention on those animals most in need and in conjunction with the Police and Guardia Civil.

Hence reporting cases of abuse or abandonment ie making a ‘denuncia’ to the Guardia Civil/Police is paramount (details of how to do this can be found on EHCRC website below).

EHCRC functions without any governmental funding and relies on donations, volunteers, their charity shops and the 24/7 unrelenting drive of the CoFounders, Sue and Rod Weeding.

The first of these rescues is a darling little pony.

EHCRC received a phone call from URMA, the Local Police in Callosa de Segura - they had received an anonymous call

LUISA: Needed a hernia operation. to say there was a little pony in an appalling state. They phoned EHCRC and as always Rod dropped everything to go there straight away. She is the sweetest little thing, about nine years old, she is covered in sores with dreadful skin problems, she is very malnourished and her feet are in an awful state.

Dorothea, their equine vet, has given her a full check up and she is receiving the care she

so justly deserves. The Police want Dorothea’s report as they are determined to take this case to Court. Another step forward in animal welfare.

The second rescue is an adorable donkey, now named Luisa.

The Centre received a call from Protectora Pels Pèls Crevillent, an animal organisation from Crevillente in the Alicante Province. The owners of a prop-

Then the lights went out.

Water had seeped into our cooker and tripped the main fuse. So by torchlight and standing in an inch of water, I had t o get i nt o t he electrics of the cooker and dry everything off.

An hour later I managed to restore the electric supply, and it took 90 minutes to mop up the water.

Then I knocked my mobile phone into the filled-tothe-brim mop bucket.

Of course by then my plan to sit down in front of the telly with a steak dinner was out of the question. So, I chose a curry pot noodle instead.

Just as I sat down to eat it, I heard a rending crash.

A large clock had fallen off the wall, and there were shards of glass everywhere.

The not poodl e, as I choose to call the things, went i nt o t he bi n and I swallowed a sleeping pill and crawled into bed.

by Nick Fletcher DS AUTOMOBILES is a fast-growing car brand - the premier division of the French PSA Group which includes Citroen, Peugeot and Vauxhall-Opel - and DS is making quite an impact with its stylised cool-image designs which really turn heads.

The new DS3 Crossback is a fine example - a compact SUV which has a genuine wow-factor and grabs immediate attention. Available in petrol, diesel and allelectric form, this model competes in a tough sector which includes the VW TCross, Audi A2 and Mini Countryman and while they all have their own pluspoints, the DS wins on sheer visual impact.

DS prices start at €24,186 (£21,555) but to get more standard kit you have to move up range and my recent test model was a topspec Performance Line version priced at €30,806 (£27,455). It has the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine giving a hefty 155 hp and is mated to

ceptional and luxurious driving experience. The hyperlux grand tourer features motorsport-derived technologies to achieve superb handling, a 0 - 100 km/h time of under three seconds, and an electronically-limited top speed of 250 km/h.

The level of luxury, comfort and character that Hispano Suiza had in the 20th century has been combined with the powerful, safety and technological parts and materials today. All of that without

losing what Hispano Suiza really is.

A custom-made electric powertrain employs two motors to deliver 750kW (1019 PS) to the rear wheels and carbon fibre monocoque and body panels keep weight under 1,690 kg.

This combination delivers a zesty 0-100 kph time of 8.2 seconds and it tops out at 208 kph (129 mph). Given the powerful performance, the average fuel figure of 14.7 kpl (41.7 mpg) is quite respectable.

Underway, the car is eagerly responsive, with smooth auto gearshifts. The steering is light so feedback is rather limited but you still get a sense of grip and composure and feel fully in control.

Ride comfort is good unless you are on very rough surfaces when the suspension set-up transmits the bumps.

Cabin accommodation offers adequate head and leg room front and rear and while the 350-litre boot is not among the largest in the class, it is still fine for most everyday needs and does expand to 1,050 litres with the rear seats down.

Where this DS outshines its rivals is its street-image the exterior design of flowing curves and striking features is an outstanding example of famous French flair and that extravagance continues in the cabin where beautifully crafted detailing of the dashboard, doors and gearshift make you feel you are in something that is quite special.

And that feeling is particularly important in the SUV sector where a distinctive and exclusive image is often a key factor.

New Tesla pickup announced IN a recent hour-long podcast Tesla CEO Elon Musk said he’s aiming to price the company’s new pick-up truck at under $50,000 (€44,000) and have it outperform the industry’s best-selling vehicle, the Ford F series, but with a futuristic sci-fi design.

Musk said that the new vehicle will combine the functionality of a conventional truck and assured everyone that the new vehicle will be better than Ford’s F150 but additionally, he commented, that it will be a better sports car than a standard Porsche 911. “It’s kind of like a ‘Blade Runner’ truck, that’s the idea. It’s not going to be for everyone. When we unveil this thing, there’ll be some people who are like, ‘Oh, that doesn’t look like a truck; I don’t want to buy it.’ It’s like when they came out with automobiles, people were like, ‘Oh, I like a horse and carriage.’ Sure, OK, you can stick with your horse and carriage, but you’re going to get an automobile later. You just don’t know it.’

Last year on Twitter, Musk claimed the pick-up will come with dual-motor all-wheel drive, as standard, a suspension that adjusts dynamically for load and ‘crazy torque.’

He also said it will have power outlets to accommodate heavyduty, 240-volt power tools.

Musk said he hoped that full details of the truck will be revealed this summer.

By Dilip Kuner SPAIN looks to have a new generation of potential world-beaters after they beat Germany 2-1 to become champions of Europe for the fifth time.

They gained revenge for a loss to the same opposition in Krakow two years ago to equal Italy’s record for the most titles in the UEFA competition.

The Spanish players started confidently with some crisp passing and excellent possession play that left the German youngsters chasing shadows, at least initially.

Luis de la Fuente’s men soon took advantage to open the scoring, with Napoli’s Fabian Ruiz taking a pass from Mikel Oyarzabal in the seventh minute to beat the German keeper with a powerful leftfoot shot from the edge of the area.

After Fabian’s goal, the match settled down with both teams enjoying periods of domination, although there was a lack of clear opportunities.

Spain just about edged the rest of the first half, although Germany had halfchances through Levin Öztunali and Jonathan Tah. After the break it was Germany who came out the stronger, although Stefan Kuntz’s young players still struggled to create real openings.

YAMAHA are celebrating a hard-fought win at the TT Circuit Assen after Maverick Viñales delivered a strong race performance to beat Marc Marquez into second place.

But the team’s other rider, Valentino Rossi crashed out on lap five, taking out Takaaki Nakagami with him.

Viñales had a good start from P2, but a wobble in turn one looked to have cost him.

He fell back to fourth, where he stayed at the completion of the first lap.

There was a small scrap between him and Marc Marquez early on, until the number-12 rider noticed the three front men getting away, prompting him to make his move. As he chased the race

Forced to chase the game, Germany started to leave space at the back as they played a high press, leaving themselves open to fast breaks.

After Alexander Nübel failed to hold a Fabián Ruiz snapshot, Dynamo Zafreb’s Dani Olmo put in Spain’s second goal. A late long-range goal from Nadiem Amiri was no more than a consolation for the Germans.

Spain’s coach Luis de la Fuente said: “We’ve been working for this for years.

Stefan Kuntz, Germany coach SAID: “We started the game not very well; Spain were very tough and we made a few errors. We then changed tactics in the second half and improved, but the second goal was a psychological blow.”

Viñales wins MotoGP in Assen leaders, frontrunner Álex Rins crashed his Suzuki.

Viñales took full advantage as he passed Joan Mir, and then the battle with Marquez and Fabio Quartararo - who finished second and third respectively - for top spot began in earnest.

The 24-year-old was in third place for a while and was having a good look behind Marquez with 14 laps to go, deciding carefully where he would make his move.

He first led the race on lap 16, but Honda’s Marquez proved difficult to shake, as you would expect from the championship leader.

With nine laps to go, the Yamaha rider ran wide going into turn one and fell back to second place. It wasn’t long before he retook the lead - in fact it was on the same lap.

From there on in there was no catching Viñales as he opened up a lead.

The Spaniard kept his concentration until the very end and took the chequered flag with a 4.854s advantage.

The result means Rossi stays in fifth position in the championship standings with an 88-point gap to first.

Viñales on the other hand moves up from 11th to seventh in the rankings, with a 95-point margin to the top.

Yamaha remains third in the constructor standings.

Marc Marquez remains top on 160 points, followed by Ducati’s Andrea Dovizoso, who was fourth on Sunday, on 116 points. Danilo Petrucci (Ducati) is third and Alex Rins (Suzuki) fourth.

Viñales said after the race: “It feels like I’m dreaming.

These have been difficult times for me, because I’ve been out of the three tracks where I thought I had the most potential with the bike.

“My season has been difficult, but I’ve tried to keep the momentum from Catalunya, because I felt really good on the bike. I’m so grateful to the team, because they did a great job this weekend and prepared well for the last laps of the race.

“I was strong, even one-toone on the brakes, I knew I could make the overtakes. It was very important to relieve some of the pressure by taking a victory.”

He added: “I think the team will be more relaxed now. Being back on the top step of the podium again feels really good and bringing Yamaha back to its winning ways is the most important to me.

“We knew we had the potential but hadn’t been able to show it. It’s always a combination between the team’s, the rider’s, and the bike’s efforts.”

MAX VERSTAPPEN took his sixth career GP win and his second consecutive Austrian Grand Prix victory after a storming drive.

He needed all his skill and determination to steer his Red Bull to first position at the team’s home track following a dreadful start.

Verstappen’s march to his sixth career win, the team’s 60th and the first for power unit partner Honda in 13 years looked scuppered at the off.

When the lights went out the Dutchman’s RB15 bogged down and he was immediately swamped by the cars around him on the grid. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc powered away in the lead ahead of Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton, Verstappen dropped to P7.

Ahead of the first round of pit stops Leclerc had built an almost five-second advantage over Bottas, who triggered what would be for most of the leading pack a single pit stop.

Bottas made a clean stop, but there was no such luck for Vettel. The Ferrari driver’s crew were not ready with a set of hard tyres and the German was forced to sit stationary for six seconds as a front left wheel was located and fitted.

Leclerc made his stop at the end of the following lap and he emerged in P3 behind new leader Hamilton and Verstappen.

Hamilton pushed too hard and damaged his front wing.

At the end of lap 30 he pitted for hard tyres and a new wing.

The stop saw Hamilton stand still in his pit box for 11 seconds. Red Bull responded and brought Verstappen in for a set of hard tyres and he emerged four seconds clear of Hamilton, in fourth place.

The Dutch ace quickly began to close up to third-placed Vettel and on lap 47 he closed to within DRS range of the Ferrari driver. On lap 50 he made it past, then took Bottas six laps later.

What followed was a titanic battle between Leclerc and Verstappen. With three laps remaining the latter made a move down the inside into turn three. The pair went alongside each other in the corner and banged wheels. Leclerc went wide on the exit of the corner and Verstappen was through.

Verstappen’s overtaking move on Leclerc was put under investigation by the stewards, but it was eventually judged to have been fair and Verstappen’s win stood.

Vettel had also been on the move during the closing stages and he passed Hamilton to take a solid fourth place after starting from P9. Hamilton was left with fifth place ahead of Lando Norris’ McLaren and Pierre Gasly crossed the line in P7 in his Red Bull to score his seventh points finish of the season to date.

Eighth place was taken by Carlos Sainz who finished ahead of the Alfa Romeo cars of Räikkönen and Antonio Giovinazzi.
