Velez-Malaga’s new government By James Waren THE two leading parties in Velez-Malaga have reached an amicable agreement to re-elect existing mayor Antonio Moreno Ferrer as leader of the city. The PSOE candidate will continue his role which will give the city stability and familiarity for the next four years. The agreement was reached after the local election for the Velez-Malaga City Council took place on May 26 and a vote was presented between the four major political parties. However a clear majority wasn’t reached so the two leading parties joined forces to make a decision that was in the best interests of local residents.

GREEN LIGHT: Malaga port tower project moves forward.

Skyscraper bid steps up PROPOSALS to build a skyscraper at Malaga’s port area has been given the green light from city council planners and work is due to start in 2020. The planned tower will be home to a luxury hotel, with 35 storeys of rooms, conference centres, gyms and spas. The scheme took a huge step forward after the city’s Environment Minister gave the project the goahead, giving a positive report on its environmental impact on the area. The project still needs to gain approval from the Spanish Cabinet, as ports are under national jurisdiction. It will also need final permissions from the Junta as it will be over 15 storeys high. The report stated that ‘it is part of the urban landscape and the visual impact of the area is already affected by business, industrial and transport activity,’ it continues ‘it won’t mean any alteration to anything of natural value.’
