Un-looky looky fine A FOREIGN tourist has become the first person to fall victim to a crackdown on illegal street vendors when he was fined €100 for buying from a looky looky man. Plain clothes officers had launched a surveillance operation on Calle Pare Bartomeu Salvà (Platja de Palma). But rather than directing their uniformed colleagues to the ‘looky looky’ men they targeted the tourist, whose nationality is unknown. A new by-law makes it possible to fine people for buying from illegal street traders, with fines ranging between €100 and €750, potentially making that ‘bargain’ a very expensive option. In this case police decided on the lowest possible amount as it was the first time the penalty had been given. He was not made to pay on the spot, and will have to pay it later. Police warn that they will be paying special attention to street trading throughout the summer and warn people not to buy items except from licensed tradesmen.
