by Sally Underwood POLICE have arrested a man accused of intentionally driving his car into the front of a club after being thrown out. The 4 4 - y e a r- o l d man , who is reportedly a resident of Arenas, is said to have sustained minor injuries in the incident. According to one publication, the man was with his cousin at a club in the La Pañoleta industrial estate in Velez-Malaga when bouncers allegedly asked the pair to leave at around 6am. After a fight reportedly broke out, the suspect is ac-

Child abuser jailed A MAN in Axarquia has been jailed for seven years for sexually abusing a girl with learning difficulties. The incidents took place in 2013 when the child, who has a 49 per cent disability, was 14 years old. According to Spanish media, a 54-year-old man has now been jailed by a Malaga court after he took the victim to his uninhabited house and sexually abused her on the property’s outside patio. The girl later told the court she did not know the man or how he had contacted her, but said he took her to the abandoned house and assaulted her on several occasions. The facts only came to light later when the girl was in a sex education class and told her teacher what they had discussed had happened to her. An investigation followed, which concluded at the Malaga Provincial Court. The victim reportedly suffers from a disability which delays her maturity and cognitive abilities. A psychologist’s report presented to the court said the girl had been unable to understand the consequences of the man’s actions, leaving her ‘very seriously’ affected by the incident. The psychologist also found the victim’s testimony credible, reliable and clear, and said her account was ‘a product of lived experience.’ While the accused denied the facts, judges cited in their sentencing several reasons for jailing him, as well as giving full credibility to the victim’s account. After finding the man guilty of a crime of continued sexual abuse, the judges prohibited him from communicating with his victim or coming within 500 metres of her for 10 years. In addition to his jail time, the accused will also have to pay the girl €5,000 in compensation.

by Sally Underwood RESIDENTS have rescued a young woman from a fire at a block of houses in Canillas de Albaida. Locals, including the town’s mayor, Jorge Martin, helped the 20-year-old after seeing flames coming from the first floor of the building on Calle Carrile de Santana. According to Spanish media, the woman had been asleep and was unaware of the fire, leaving a neighbour to climb up the front of the building to warn her. The girl required medical treatment for smoke inhalation but was otherwise unharmed. The council paid for her to stay in a hotel for the night rather than return home. Residents have criticised the provincial fire services, however, who they claim took 40 minutes to arrive. Locals were forced to intervene themselves, using extinguishers from the town hall to battle the flames. After

Malaga doctor threat MALAGA has been named the p ro v in c e w ith th e mo s t a mount of p h y s ica l atta c k s a g ains t me dic a l staff. Labour union CC OO has now asked the Junta de Andalucia for a plan to prevent ‘the scourge’ of violence. The figures, collected in the Com-
puterised Aggression Record (RIA), showed there have been 81 attacks on staff so far this year, far higher than Sevilla at 52. The provincial secretary for Health at CC OO, Rafael Gonzalez Delgado, said the Junta de Andalucia must act. The study showed there were 11,225
physical and verbal assaults on staff between 2007 and 2018 in Andalucia, 2,560 of which are thought to have been physical assaults. According to the CC OO, the actual figure could be far higher, however, as it is estimated around 20 per cent of violent incidents go unreported.

Bad smells OFFICIALS are putting aside €100,000 to eliminate bad smells from the purification plant in Rincon de la Victoria. The Costa del Sol-Axarquia Commonwealth of Municipalities are tackling the issue after reportedly receiving many complaints from residents. The maintenance works are also hoped to create around €40,000 a year in energy savings, meaning the investment could be paid off within two-and-a-half years. The project will see work to the deodorisation towers, which were opened in 2003. Rincon de la Victoria council said: “With this action we hope to avoid gases escaping which can generate bad odours.” Other tasks will include cleaning and replacing grilles, maintaining the sodium hypochlorite pump for a higher flow rate, and repairing polyester parts. Currently, captured gases are pumped into the lower part of the tower where they receive a spray of sodium hypochlorite before recirculating. The council said: “The filling elements of the tower provide a high contact surface between the reagent and compounds in the air which need to be removed, thus facilitating their neutralisation.”

Capital celebrates THIS picture of Madrid City Hall comes as the Spanish capital and the surrounding region celebrates its annual holiday today (Thursday). Madrid City has a population of almost 3.3 million while its metropolitan area has one of roughly 6.5 million. It is the third-largest city in Europe after London and Berlin. The city, which covers an area of more than 604 square kilometres, was named the 10th most liveable in the world by Monocle magazine in 2017.
It is the seat of government and the royal family and is home to two of the country’s most popular football teams, Real and Atletico Madrid. The city was founded sometime in the 9th century and the first documented reference to it comes from a Moorish source while Spain was under Muslim rule. Its original Arabic name, Majrit, comes from a fortress built on the Manzanares River. The city was conquered by the Christian Kingdom of Castile in
1085. In following centuries rulers and officials met in Madrid more often before King Philip II established the royal court there in 1561, making the city the de facto capital. Madrid grew into a modern city in the 18th and 19th century and was named explicitly as the Spanish capital in the 1931 Constitution of the Second Republic. The day of the holiday, May 2, marks the anniversary of an uprising staged by Madrid residents against the occupying French forces of Napoleon in 1808.

Land owner requests meeting with Julen’s parents by Sally Underwood DAVID SERRANO, the owner of the land where Julen died down a 71-metre borehole in Totalan, has requested a meeting with the boy’s parents. The man, who is currently under investigation as part of a negligent manslaughter case in Malaga, has asked for the chance to speak to Jose Rosello, Julen’s father. Serrano’s lawyers said he wants the chance to clarify alleged discrepancies in the accounts Rosello gave to the Guardia Civil and to the Malaga court. The lawyers claim Rosello’s testimony is not clear on whether Serrano warned the parents of the presence of the borehole when they arrived on his land, or half an hour later. Serrano reportedly also believes Rosello will corroborate his claim that he had covered

work, and any criminal charges should fall on him. Two weeks ago, the results of a post-mortem on the body of two-year-old Julen showed the boy died shortly after his fall. According to Spanish media, the report also rejects the
theory put forward by Serrano suggesting the toddler was killed by subsequent rescue attempts. The post-mortem shows Julen died of trauma to his spine and head ‘a few minutes’ after his fall.

Historic works ARENAS Council has begun conservation works to the Bentomiz Arab castle. The project will be the first of its kind to the 11th century medieval enclosure, after it was left abandoned for several decades. Following an agreement with the owners of the site, the council has revealed imminent archaeological plans, including maintenance and research work in order to preserve the monument. The building has been categorised as of Cultural Interest (BIC), and it is hoped the works will improve safety at the site, which is expected to receive more visitors over the coming years. Mayor Francisco Laureano Martin said: “[This] is the starting point for a series of maintenance and research work which will strengthen not only the image and the importance the castle and its surroundings have in terms of historical and natural heritage, but also preserve an emblematic site within the province.”
New petrol station VISITORS to Torrox may soon find a second petrol station on the exit at kilometre 285 of the A-7 motorway. The same businessman who opened the current BP station at the same site in 2014 has reportedly requested permission to build another. According to Spanish media, Torre del Mar entrepreneur Juan Andres Lisbona has received final approval from Torrox Council and is now awaiting various reports from the Junta de Andalucia and Spain’s central government. Torrox’s mayor, Oscar Medina, said the process could take at least six months. The processing time to approve the previous BP garage took 13 years.

Urine trouble A MAN has been arrested in Malaga after allegedly hitting police officers who reprimanded him for urinating in the street. The 38-year-old man is said to have kicked two Local Police officers after he was caught in the centre of Malaga City. The suspect was arrested on suspicion of assault, serious disobedience, resisting arrest, threatening pol i c e o ff i c e r s , a n d p u b l i c urination. The incident took place at around 11.45am after the man was allegedly found urinating on the corner between two streets. When an officer approached the man and asked for documentation, the suspect is said to have become hostile. According to Spanish media, a girl the man was with tried to calm him down, but failed and the policeman called for backup. When another officer arrived, they tried to search the man, who tried to punch them before kicking the police.
Agriculture boost THE Provincial Council has promised to boost agriculture and trade in Axarquia. At a meeting held in Alcaucin, council members approved an institutional manifesto which will commit to them promoting agriculture and food industry in the region. Francisco Salado, president of the Provincial Council, said the area had ‘enormous possibilities’ due to its exports of avocados, mangos, oil and wines. He explained the council would also work towards boosting Axarquia’s tourism and cultural growth. Other plans include expanding the network of trails and roads, building bridges, and carrying out further research on archaeological remains at Boquete de Zafaraya.

by Sally Underwood FRIGILIANA Council has announced it will sue the operators of a mobile phone antenna located next to the municipal nursery. The mast, which is run by Vodafone and Orange, brings in a rental revenue of €6,500 to the council. However, despite being in place for 20 years, persistent criticism from residents has seen local politicians take action. Residents claim the antenna is located too close to an urban area where around 1,000 people live, as well as being close to a nursery, doctor’s surgery, Culture House, multipurpose centre, and library. moval. The council leader at the time, Javier Lopez, said a Ministry of Industry report showed the mast’s emission
levels were ‘within the limits of the law.’ However, current mayor, Alejandro Herrero, argued: “It is not only a question of health, because of the danger it may pose, but it is also for aesthetic reasons, we cannot have that antenna in the middle of the town, with those dimensions.” According to Spanish media, residents claim there have been several cases of cancer in the area over the past 20 years. The council has said it has offered to assume part of the costs of removing the mast, estimated at €50,000.
Ambulance halted POLICE have arrested a man who allegedly got under an ambulance to prevent it going out to an emergency. The 49-year-old allegedly prevented the vehicle leaving an emergency services zone in Plaza del la Marina, Malaga City.
Police claim they were called to the scene by ambulance drivers who said he would not let them drive off. A Local Police officer arrived before persuading the man to leave, but was later required to intervene again when paramedics claimed the man
returned, grabbing the underside of the vehicle. To allow the ambulance to attend the emergency, officers say they were forced to use the minimum necessary force to remove the man, who is said to have kicked and slapped them.

Sri Lanka bomber ‘studied in the UK’ ONE of the nine people suspected of carrying out Easter Sunday’s terrorist attacks in Sri Lanka reportedly studied at a university in the UK. As more details of the atrocities emerge, Sri Lankan state officials have revealed the suspects were all highly-educated. According to Deputy Defence Minister Ruwan Wijewardene, “They wanted Islam to be the only religion in Sri Lanka. Most are well educated and come from middle or upper middle-class families. They are quite independent financially and their families are stable. This is worrying.” He added: “One of the suicide bombers studied in the UK and then did a post-graduate course in Australia before returning to Sri Lanka.” So-called Daesh have since claimed responsibility for the killings which have so far left 359 people dead.

Game of Thrones feature film in Spain THE first Game of Thrones feature film is to be premiered in Sevilla this summer. But for fans of the HBO series it is probably best to be aware that this is an ‘unofficial’ production, which, although based on original scripts, does not include your favourite actors and will be in Spanish. It is the brainchild of journalism student Maria Barcenas who assembled a team of more than 100 film technicians and actors to recreate some of the highlights from the eight series of the world-wide phenomena. She managed to get the blessing of HBO before embarking on the ambitious project, in which she revisited the settings used in the original series in Sevilla and

scenes for the recreation and worked from the original scripts. Now filming is complete, production company Seven Kingdom’s Studios says it will premiere in Seviila this summer, with the film also being screened in several cinemas across Spain.

€18 million fraud probe NATIONAL POLICE have arrested 26 people out of 36 investigated for social security fraud amounting to more than €18 million. Last summer 18 complaints were received by the authorities with regards to the alleged crimes and 36 suspects were investigated. The authorities carried out an operation in collaboration with the general treasury of social security. A network of up to 17 companies (13 debtors and four assets) were allegedly formed by the group to evade the owed payments. During the operation, it was revealed that the ‘plot leader’ had put the companies in his three-year-old daughter’s name.

He reminded them that citizens had ‘a right and a duty’ to vote but advised them that human life ‘from its beginnings until its natural end’ was something that should be very much taken into account. So too, Monseigneur Sanchez said, should support for the family ‘based on matrimony between man and woman and - above all during times of a demographic crisis - open to life.’ It was also important to remember that civic obligations are not extinguished by exercising the right to vote, the pastoral letter continued. ‘We must also watch to ensure that electoral promises are kept,’ the archbishop advised his flock.

TRAGIC: The boy disappeared from a ravine in Sierra de Guara.
Child’s lifeless body found GUARDIA CIVIL rescue teams have located a lifeless body of a child who had disappeared in Huesca. According to sources from the armed institute, the corpse of the little boy was found at around 11:00am on Sunday near a ravine. The child was part of a group which was canyoning in the Oscuros del Balces area, near Rodellar. The boy’s disappearance was reported on Saturday at around 8pm. According to Spanish press, two women belonging to the group were rescued, but the child was pulled away by the current in an area that was difficult to access.
ABUSE OF POWER: Police have arrested a doctor after sexual abuse reports. A DOCTOR in Valencia has been arrested on suspicion of abusing four patients. The 60-year-old Spanish man has been accused of inappropriately touching and flirting with several women in the town of Alfafar. Police began investigating after a woman
claimed her family doctor had begun hugging, kissing and touching her during a consultation. She alleged it was not the first time he had tried to do this. Following her complaint, officers began interviewing several other possible victims, including women aged between 40 and 70 years old.
Paying the climate bill TWO Greenpeace activists climbed the statue of Christopher Columbus in Barcelona and fastened a snorkelling mask to its head. After scaling the 57-metre monument to attach the mask they also unfurled a banner alluding to the candidates’ disregard for climate change as a campaign topic. ‘Think, vote, act!’ declared the banner attached to Columbus’s arm that points towards the New World.
Maria Jose Caballero, Greenpeace’s assistant programmes director stressed to the Spanish news agency Efe, That the Columbus stunt was ‘peaceful.’ The pre-election Day of Reflection was deliberately chosen to encourage society to think, reflect and act, said Caballero who criticised politicians’ indifference to the climate crisis during the election campaign. She went on to explain that
the diving mask referred to rising sea levels worldwide, which were one of the principal effects of climate change. Greenpeace began a climate awareness campaign more than two weeks ago, hanging a giant bill from the Colon towers in Madrid that proclaimed, ‘They are costing us our lives. They are costing us the Planet. Don’t pay the bill.’ “We shall be here until they listen to us,” Caballero said.
Not fracking likely! IN 2015 the Canadian company BNK Petroleum intended to prospect for gas in north Burgos. BNK believed the area was potentially one of the best in Spain for extraction via fracking. Four years later, the company has gone no further and does not expect to. According to the Ministry of the Environment only Hunosa and Volta Enery in Asturias and Aragon have applied for prospection licences since 2014 but the first project is halted owing to its high cost and the
second because fracking is barred in Aragon. “Explorations using nonconventional methods are nonexistent,” said Angel Camara, spokesman for Spain’s Upper Council of Mining Engineers. The expense, coupled to poor profits only partly explains the big companies’ lack of interest. Experts claimed that they were put off by the Castor debacle when earth tremors scuppered plans to store gas in an abandonded oil field off Castellon, and cost the Administration huge sums in compensation.
“Things slowed down after Castor and officials scrutinise everything very closely now,” they said. Public opinion and protests against fracking in the Mediterranean had also adversely affected prospecting, which Spain’s Climate Change laws now ban, Angel Camara said. It was one thing to prohibit fracking, he said, but another to ban prospections, he maintained. “As a concept, investigation always makes sense although it’s another matter whether it’s applied or not.”

The socialists headed by the current president Pedro Sanchez won 123 seats in the national parliament but will need pacts with other parties to govern. The Partido Popular, the PSOE’s closest rivals lagged further behind than expected with 66 seats and the party under Pablo Casado suffered its worst-ever defeat. His hard-hitting, far-right strategy backfired and the PP’s showing in Cataluña was abysmal, taking just one seat in Madrid and none in the Basque Region. Ciudadanos and Albert Rivera did better by poaching enough PP voters to win 57 seats, but did not manage to

the party that every other party feared for different reasons enters the national parliament for the first time with 24 seats although Santiago Abascal had hoped to win twice that. The Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) pro-independence party doubled their seats in the national parliament to 15, while PNV and Bildu in the Basque Region also gained seats. There was a record turnout of almost 76 per cent, nine percentage points more than in the 2016 general election. It is already clear that the PP, Cs and Vox cannot repeat their Andalucia coalition and Albert Rivera ruled out a postelection alliance with the PSOE weeks ago. Pedro Sanchez must now look Left to form a government and woo the nationalists, possibly including ERC, to obtain the 176 seats he needs to govern.
PSOE and what they stand for PSOE are the oldest and arguably the most successful political party in Spain, having been in power for a longer time than any other party since the demise of the Franco dictatorship. PSOE (Partido Socialista Obrero Español) which translates as ‘The Spanish Socialist Workers Party’ is far removed from the British Socialist Workers party, having abandoned Marxist ideology in the 1980s. It now describes itself as ‘social democratic, centre-left and progressive.’ The leader of this party is Pedro Sanchez, 47, who became Prime Minister of Spain after the no-confidence vote in the previous government of conservative Mariano Rajoy in 2018. The major policies of POSE are: * Pro-European and further European integration. From May 1, Spain will hold the Presidency of the EU. * To introduce a fairer and more equitable system of taxation. * To create jobs - already policies are going ahead with the release of funds for major infrastructure spending projects as well as housing. * A review of spending to the regions, ensuring equality across the country. * Ensuring the rights of pensioners, the disabled, individuals from the ‘LGBTI’ communities, families and women, with a special emphasis on tackling racism. * Increasing spending in and improving the quality of education, especially in the sciences and to promote digital developments. * Developing health services to make Spain a worldwide leader in the field. * The urgent eradication of poverty. * Advancing consumer rights. * To develop policies to counter rural depopulation and develop opportunities in those affected areas.

Prison terms for insulting lesbians THE Barcelona High Court confirmed sixmonth prison sentences for two men who insulted and attacked two lesbians for kissing in public. They were in a café in central Barcelona when the two men rebuked them for kissing and then flashed their testicles at them. “Listen, you can’t kiss each other in public,” they told their victims, while one of the men also punched one of the women.
This prompted the judges who tried the case to class the incident as hate crime as well as causing bodily harm. They also gave weight to the evidence of one of the women which they described as ‘firm, serious and without contradictions.’ Her ‘courage and determination’ had made it possible to identify the aggressors, the judges commented, because she ran out of the café after them and succeeded in retaining one until the police arrived.
A present for Francis DORI, a 30-year-old Hungarian who was a victim of people-traffickers and gender abuse, found herself imprisoned for robbery. Some weeks ago, she and others in Castellon de la Plana prison wrote to Pope Francis, asking him to visit the prison. Radio presenter Eva Fernandez who was covering the Pope’s visit to Morocco for radio station Cope, handed over the letter, together with a drawing headed ‘Don’t be long, we’re waiting for you.’ There was also a ship inside a plastic bottle which
the prisoners had made in their handicrafts and recycling workshop inside the prison. “I’m so proud that the Pope had our present in his hands,” said Dori who has since been released from prison. She explained she was so excited about the Pope’s present that she called her mother in Hungary. “She was thrilled too and couldn’t believe it. But she said it was a pity that I only do good things in prison,” admitted Dori who now hopes to study Fine Arts.

But someone was, a Benidorm video blogger Harryvlogs-Benidorm, and his shocking video has prompted a backlash against the Costa Blanca street sweeper. The worker can clearly be seen watching for a break in passing traffic and looking all around before kicking a pile of rubbish from the path into scrubland alongside; instead of collecting it up and popping it into his hand cart. He then ambles off totally unaware that his actions had been captured. Enraged users took to social media to criticise his actions.

Unions criticised the choice of April 28 for the general election and pointed out no political party made any mention during their campaigns of the need to curb workplace deaths and accidents. More than 652 died in workrelated accidents in Spain during 2018, the worst figures for the last seven years. They called on the new government to act against precarious and deterio-
rated work conditions and to repeal labour reforms introduced by their predecessors. Ministry of Employment figures reveal fewer employees died in work-related accidents during the economic crisis, as there was a considerably reduced workforce. As more jobs were created, fatal accidents increased, rising from 458 in 2013 to last year’s 652. The majority of 2018’s deaths occurred during the working day, while 146 people were killed on the way to work.

Bar brawl A 17-YEAR-OLD boy has been seriously injured following a brawl at a nightclub in San Sebastian. Seven people have been arrested in connection with the alleged fight, which reportedly left a further two people with minor in-
juries. The brawl is said to have taken place at 5am on Friday morning on a public road. Health workers were forced to perform CPR on the 17-year-old, resuscitating him before transferring him to the Donostia Hospital.

Ins and outs of the Padron
Living in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics.
IN simple words, the padron is a local certificate that you are given when you register at your town hall. In Spanish it is called ‘certificado de empadronamiento,’ and helps compile a list of those people who live in a municipality. The padron is used by the government and local authorities to keep a ‘head count’ on how many people live in the area, and as such receive financial assistance in the form of subsidies and grants from provincial, regional and central authorities for the provision of services. Anyone who lives for more than six months in Spain is required to register on the padron. However, the certificate itself only lasts for a limited period of time, and must be renewed. A handy website is: www.spanishsolutions.net/of ficial-documents-in-spain/padron To register on the padron you need: Your passport, Your NIE or residence certificate, The deeds to your house or a copy of your rental agreement, A recent utility bill in your name. To add someone onto your padron, as it must contain all occupants, you will need: • Title deeds of the property, • The passports of both parties, and copies, • A utility bill, • Both certificates of residence, • Rental agreement (if renting and not residing with owner). Since you need the padron certificate to become a Spanish resident, but you cannot give the padron office your residency until you apply for it, the padron offices usually give a set period to return and present your Spanish residency. In the Alicante Province, for example, it’s three months. To find out more, visit: www.gov.uk/guidance-requirements-in-spain. Padron holders have the right to vote in local elections. Residents who can demonstrate a specified time on the padron, can also receive benefits or a cash grant when getting married to another resident, or could qualify for financial assistance for any children born in Spain. The traffic department of Spain, require a padron to register a car in your own name, to import a car from another country, to qualify for a Spanish driver’s licence, and in some cases to purchase mobile phones or electrical goods. WATER TRANSFER: An aqueduct in Carrascosa del Campo (Cuenca). CLIMATE change will cause the Iberian Peninsula to suffer more and more water shortages, at a serious financial cost. At the moment much of Spain’s agriculture, industry and population relies on a transfer of water between the Tagus and Segura water catchment basins, But a new study on climate change effects on the TagusSegura transfer forecasts that by the year 2070 it will not be possible to transfer water, if present projections are fulfilled. Since 1979, the Segura basin
has been receiving water from the Tagus River, the longest in the Iberian Peninsula, thanks to one of the largest engineering hydraulic works in Spain. Forty years later, the flow transferred is increasingly scarce due to a factor which was not taken into account at the time of construction; climate change. Scarcer rainfall and rising temperatures will cause major fluvial alterations, especially in rivers which depend on groundwater discharges and snow thawing. ‘In recent years, transfers to
the Segura river basin from the headwaters of the Tagus have been much lower than planned. ‘Instead of the theoretical 540 hm3/year which should arrive, there have been flows into the Segura river basin of about 365 hm3/year on average,’ according to a study published in the journal Hydrology and Earth System Sciences. Lead authors Francisco Pellicer and José Miguel Martínez Paz say that direct economic losses of between €380 million and €425 million a year can be expected and the river basin would be destroyed.
No light touch RETIRED engineer Antonio Moreno Alfaro has accused Endesa of overcharging consumers almost €11 million since 2010. The power company charged users an extra 33 cents a month although not all were integrated into its remote- controlled meterreading network, the 75-year-old maintained. Consumers’ association Facua made - and won - a similar case in 2014, where Endesa had to return €1.39 million and pay a €400,000 fine. Moreno worked for an electricity meter company, but was sacked when he was 51
because he refused to take part in what he called’dirty business.’ Since then he spends much of his time uncovering irregularities in electricity bills and has accused ministers and denounced ex-presidents of the government, sometimes winning and sometimes losing. The engineer now wants the Junta to cancel the Facua verdict and seize €10.8 million from Endesa while increasing the fine to between €48 and €480 million, as the courts only obliged the company to return what was overcharged in 2014.
Roberto Hernandez is also accused of raping Sara, whose father is Romanian. The victim’s mother also faces life imprisonment for failing to prevent her abuse and death.

A PROSECUTOR at a murder trial over the death of a four-year-old claimed the girl was killed because of the accused’s ‘hatred of Romanians.’ The lawyer claimed Sara was abused and
killed in Valladolid in 2017 because her mother ’s boyfriend hated foreigners, particularly Romanians.

BREXIT BRIEF Second referendum debate reignited THE publicity surrounding Britain’s two new political parties and their European election campaigns has reignited the debate about a second referendum. The two groups, Change UK and the Brexit Party, have both set out their stalls on completely opposing ends of the political spectrum. Change UK has labelled itself as the ‘natural home of the remain alliance,’ while the Brexit Party is squarely behind leaving the European Union. Some commentators said the stark difference between the two parties could turn the European elections into ‘another vote on Brexit, with two very clear options.’ British journalist Thomas Hunt told podcast Brexit: The Final Countdown: ‘I actually think the whole ‘second referendum, we need another vote on Brexit,’ this is it.’ He added: ‘No- one is voting for their local leisure centre to get EU funded, this is down purely to Brexit, Remain or Leave, it’s the exact same.’ Meanwhile, Liberal Democrat leader Vince Cable was met with booing and shouts by the Question Time audience after he suggested a second referendum was the only way to, ‘lance the boil of Brexit.’
Farage sets sights on general election By Joe Gerrard NIGEL FARAGE has ruffled feathers in the Conservative and Labour parties after confirming his newly-formed Brexit Party will stand at the next general election. Rather than simply fielding candidates at next month’s European Parliament elections, the former UKIP leader said he now wants to use the opportunity as a ‘springboard,’ for ‘massive change’ in UK politics. According to several polls, Farage’s party already looks sets to make large gains at the EU elections, with many former Conservative and Labour supporters pledging to switch allegiance to his Brexit Party. The politician’s latest announcement that his party will also stand at the next general election could see Britain’s current political landscape dramatically altered. Farage, who said he made his return to politics because he does not believe parliament intends to follow through with Brexit, claimed he hoped his new party would put pressure on MPs to leave the European Union by October 31. He told British media: “We want the European election to be the first step of a massive change which entirely resets British politics. “MPs will realise that if they carry on trying to stop Brexit, they’ll lose their seats at the next general elec-

THE Supreme Court has refused to review the sentence given to three ETA members responsible for the terrorist attacks on T4 of Madrid’s Barajas airport in 2006. The offenders, Igor Portu, Mattin Sarasola and Mikel San Sebastian, were sentenced nearly nine years ago to over 1.000 years each for two crimes of terrorist homicide, 48 murders and causing havoc. The petition to review the National Court’s sentencing comes after the European Court of Human Rights condemned Spain for the mistreatment inflicted on two of the offenders during their arrest and imprisonment; a strategy which was allegedly used to obtain their confessions.

A DIG under Elche’s central market has made a grim discovery; 120 skeletons which date back to the Islamic period in the city’s history. The human remains are dated back to between the 11th and 13th century, and in a poignant insight into the realities of life and death in those times, 60 per cent are of chil-
dren under 12. The discovery was made during the third phase of an archaeological investigation of the area. ‘Jihadist friend’ arrested THE alleged friend of a man accused of plotting a terrorist attack in Sevilla has been arrested and subsequently released. According to media reports, the man was later released after surrendering his passport and being ordered not to leave Spain. The man accused of plotting a terrorist attack in Sevilla was arrested in Morocco on April 9. Police reportedly seized documentation and computer equipment from the suspect’s home in Spain.

Agency assesses Telepizza bonds TWO ratings agencies have rated bonds offered by Spanish fast food chain Telepizza at B and B2, saying they are junk offerings, but stable. S&P Global and Moody’s said the €335 million debt auction from the company was positive if the company could carry out its ‘challenging’ business plan. It comes as the company is offering high-yield bonds with a seven-year maturity to refinance a debt restricting programme. They also follow Telepizza plans to take over several Spanish Pizza Hut stores.

Bank to revisit worker payout
Deficit fall on course SPAIN is currently set to exit an EU public spending scheme launched after the eurozone crisis after Brussels revised figures for Madrid’s annual deficit down. The EU’s Eurostat statistics agency revised down Spain’s estimated 2018 budget deficit as a percentage of economic output (GDP) to 2.48 per cent from the 2.63 per cent previously stated. That means Spain could leave Brussels’ Excessive Deficit Procedure as early as June this year if the financial and economic outlook does not change drastically in the coming months.
By Joe Gerrard The revised figures come as the government previously posted deficit figures of 2.63 per cent. Economy Minister Nadia Calviño said at the time that the fall from 3.1 per cent in 2017 came from increases in tax receipts despite higher government spending. Calviño added Spain would not be on course to meet targets for deficit reduction set by the previous conservative Partido Popular (PP) government. That administration wanted to cut spending to bring the deficit down to 2.2 per cent of GDP in 2018.
Spain entered the Excessive Deficit Procedure in 2011 during the eurozone debt crisis. It saw Brussels attempt to impose spending restrictions on Madrid as well as Greece, Ireland and Portugal. It requires member states to keep budget deficits below 3 per cent of GDP and national debt beneath 60 per cent of GDP. Spain’s national debt as a percentage of GDP stood at more than 97 per cent last year, according to Eurostat. IMF forecasts released earlier this month predicted Spain’s deficit would remain below 3 per cent of GDP until at least 2024.
MANAGERS of CaixaBank have agreed to look into increasing payoffs for workers recently laid off after unions claimed they were ‘extremely insufficient’. The bank and the USO union have been in talks over the compensation after managers announced plans to cut branches by 18 per cent, affecting around 2,157 workers. The union has asked the bank to increase payouts and to ensure workers who opt to transfer to different branches are adequately compensated. Previous plans would have seen staff aged under 53 paid redundancies worth 40 days per year worked.

Survey finds debt optimism ALMOST half of Spanish debtors think their financial situation will improve, and more than one in 10 believe it will get worse in the coming years, a study has found. The Kruk Group lending broker study also found the percentage of people who did not have outstanding debts who were optimistic about their financial futures stood at 36 per cent.
Around two-thirds of survey respondents not making payments said having debt is a problem which must be dealt with as soon as possible. The equivalent figure for those in debt was 51 per cent, the study found. About 9 per cent of people not in debt had savings equivalent to three years worth of income. The survey found telephone and internet bills were the least urgent payments to make.

Pound GBP/EUR: Down from €1.16 to €1.15 GBP/USD: Down from $1.32 to $1.30 The pound had a volatile start to February, fluctuating against currencies like the euro and the US dollar as April 12 - the UK’s revised deadline for leaving the EU - approached. A series of failed votes and stalled talks undermined hopes that a deal would be struck in time, and some feared that the UK would crash out of the EU without a deal. However, the UK was granted a flexible extension, with the possibility of staying in the EU until October 31. This development stopped the pound tumbling, but concerns about the impact of more months of uncertainty saw Sterling struggle as Easter approached.

Currency outlook: Brexit chaos calms, GBP/EUR edges lower
UNCERTAINTY: Recent Brexit news saw the pound continue to struggle. News that talks between Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and Prime Minister Theresa May had stalled, also kept the pound
under pressure. At this stage it would take a significant Brexit development or seriously impressive UK data to
give the pound a boost. Euro EUR/GBP: Up from £0.85 to £0.86
EUR/USD: Down from $1.14 to $1.12 Although a dovish policy outlook from the European Central Bank (ECB) and mixed ecostats for the Eurozone have prevented the euro from shining against the US dollar in the last four weeks, the common currency has managed to edge higher against the pound. EUR/GBP has risen slightly in the wake of the EU granting the UK another Brexit extension, and the euro could extend these gains in the weeks ahead if the prospect of a deal being reached before the EU elections remains unlikely. Other news to look out for includes the ECB’s monthly bulletin, the EU Commission’s economic forecasts and Eurozone inflation data.

An arrogant affront
LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT JUST how much more of this one-sided, socalled diversity claptrap are we intended to put up with? This latest announcement, sanctioned and approved by the Lord Mayor of London (surprise surprise), is not only an insult to the intelligence of the beleaguered local British populace, but just about as far from integration and harmonious diversity as you can get. Apparently the North London Muslim Housing Association, (Yep), who actually go to great pains to advertise that they build and provide accommodation for all denominations and cultures, intends to build a London enclave of houses for Muslim occupation only. Apparently this company is fully endorsed by the GLC, who have already donated almost two million pounds to its coffers, and you can be certain if Mayor Khan has his way, are no doubt poised to pour in even more. Just how naïve do these people think (or not even care) the local populace actually is? Just consider the outcry there would be if a UK construction company announced it was building an estate to house only English or white practising Christians, or in fact any religion other than Muslim. There would be condemnations in the media, questions in the House, rioting in the streets and possible legal proceedings in the courts. Instead of that, this whole unsavoury scheme

fear and isolation. No doubt these areas will become no-go areas for non-Muslims and be conducted under the laws of Sharia. This and any other areas like it are a blight on our society. They are like cancers growing within
the very heart of British freedom and democracy and if allowed to continue will one day envelope the whole country. This one-sided appeasement and intentional segregation of a religion and culture, which the British public is trying so hard and patiently to nurture and understand, is nothing short of disgraceful, and both Mayor Khan and indeed anyone who condones these housing developments should be thoroughly ashamed and indeed brought up in front of the authorities to explain their actions, which are in the very least racist, and certainly in no way constructive to the UK’s endeavours to instill diversity and integration into the British way of life. Well, I wouldn’t hold yer breath. After all when you compare the outpouring of grief at the NZ mosque attack to the relatively lukewarm reaction from both the snowflakes and authorities to the Sri Lanka atrocities, I think you get some idea of how the land is beginning to lie. In fact, had some of the tragic victims in the latter attack not been British; it would probably have been old news after a couple of days! It would if the BBC had had anything to do with it anyway. TECH FOR THE TIMID ALL hail the arrival of flexible phones. Now all their inventors need to do is find consumers gullible enough to spend two grand on them. Earlier this year Samsung, Huawei and several also-rans unveiled their fancy new folding phones to a market frenzied with apathy. Why in Edison’s name would anyone actually want one? The cynical answer: because in a smartphone market struggling to overcome stalled innovation and the vanilla blandness of one glass slab after another, manufacturers are desperate to introduce The Next Big Thing. Big the folding phones certainly are. Instant candidates for a WeightWatchers course, some are double the thickness and heft of a standard phone as well as being double the price. It’s actually cheaper to buy two complete phones and use them alongside each other, but just like owning one of these fancy new Siamese-twinned phones, why would you? Open up the clunky device and

BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM: World’s first foldable phone, from Royole. voila, you’ve got an eight-inch tabletsized screen. One model needs dual batteries to handle the extra power drain. Back in my formative years I opened my copy of Catcher in the Rye so many times the cover broke. Wouldn’t the new folding phone suffer the same fate? Not at all, say the producers; the hinge is guaranteed for ‘tens of thou-
sands’ of foldings, thanks to innovative thin and durable polymer screens and an ingenious mechanism with multiple interlocking gears hidden in the enclosure. It all smacks of overkill. And should we really buy the hype, given that we actually had folding phones way back in 2009? That’s when those peskily awkward flip phones were the absolute height of chic with their
clamshell designs. True nerds (I plead guilty) went the whole hog and bought Nokia’s monstrous Communicator phone with its complete fold-out keyboard; in essence a computer you hoisted to your ear and about as practical as a chocolate teapot. Flip phone users had endless tales to tell, from hitting the external internet button by mistake and then having to pay for expensive data during the subsequent scramble to open the phone and find the kill command, to the unrivalled satisfaction of being able to slam the phone shut on a bad conversation. With the new folding phones due on sale in Europe shortly (some at an eye-watering €2,000 or more) who can say whether they are the future for anyone other than early adopters desperate to impress. But hey, if you really want a folding phone right now there’s actually a cheaper way. Just sit on your existing phone.
5G or not 5G THERE are only two real smartphone innovations on the horizon to part us from our cash, and folding phones are one. 5G is the other; the new superfast worldwide mobile data standard. But r i g h t n o w i t ’s s t i l l m o r e hype than happening. 5G is touted as the driver of the ‘Internet of Things’; enabling all of our connected devices to ‘talk’ to each other untouched by the human hand. Perhaps more importantl y, i t ’s t h e t e c h n o l o g y needed to really make driverless cars work, as your Audi negotiates wirelessly at 120km/h with an adjac e n t Te s l a t o d u k e o u t which one owns the fast lane. In reality for loads of us right now, 5G or not 5G is not the question, given that we can barely get 3G. On a good day.

Not unless they can prove they’re ultra PC… Take for instance, Little Red Riding Hood (Red to her trans co-workers) who, you’ll recall, lives with her homemaker mother near a wood full of protected plants. One day, her mother asks her to take some organically-grown fruit to Grandma. Red: “Aren’t you oppressing me by ordering me like this?” “No,” Mother replies. “It’s impossible for women to oppress each other since all women are equally oppressed until all women are free.” On her way to Grandma’s, Red is challenged by the wolf. LEGALLY SPEAKING How to change administrators? IN our aparthotel building on the Costa Blanca, we have full-time residents and many owners who rent out their property. Our administration company is also the managing agent for the aparthotel and the rentals. We recently called an EGM to remove this administrator. Now he has refused permission to see our bank accounts and we are told that our community fees are far too high. The same administrators were removed by the court from another apartment block and had to refund money to the owners. We have installed a new administration company. This will take 18 months to go through the courts and we have an AGM soon. Is there any lawful course we can take? LS (Costa Blanca)

IT was typical of the state of politics everywhere, and especially Spanish politics, that there had to be a debate about the debate. It was a let-down anyway, because Spain’s Electoral Committee decided that Vox couldn’t have its say along with Sanchez, Casado, Rivera and Iglesias because the rabidly ultraright-wing party does not have parliamentary representation. The argument that it definitely will after Sunday carried no weight, and Sanchez’s attempt to circumnavigate the veto by holding the debate on the private Atresmedia channel backfired. In the event the four held forth on the state broadcaster TVE as well as Atresmedia, but what they had to say paled into insignificance compared with getting them there. Supposedly it’s better to travel hopefully than to arrive, and it was more riveting to follow the politics of arranging the debatable debates than actually hearing them.

A dogmatic travesty THE election campaign brought us the spectacle of a PP politician campaigning in Cataluña and declaring ‘No Pasaran!’ Presumably he was referring to the pro-independence parties hoping for a Catexit, but he was saying it 83 years too late in the wrong context. And Dolores Ibarruri must have been turning in her grave to hear her words turned into a dogmatic travesty.

Palace with his wife and two sons, he said, but was told that remaining in his own home would be unworkable and a security risk. Given the unfortunate possibility that Corbyn could win Britain’s next general election, doubtless he will be told the same thing. When Adolfo Suarez was named president in 1976, the seat of government was still lo-
cated in Paseo de la Castellana in the centre of Madrid although he lived in his own home. This was soon deemed unpractical, again on security grounds, and the government offices, together with Suarez and his family, moved to the Moncloa Palace. But Suarez, like others who followed, was eventually afflicted by the notorious Moncloa syndrome brought on by isolation, adulation and boredom. Funny place, Moncloa; everybody wants to get there, but nobody likes it once they’re in.
Time for reflection WHO would have thought it? Pablo Iglesias lauding the Constitution and pledging to fulfil and not demolish it during the pre-election debates! After all, not so long ago, he was agitating to boot out the Generation of ’78, but changing nappies for several months while on paternity leave must have given the Podemos supremo time to reflect. Probably he decided that implementing and respecting Spain’s Constitution isn’t a bad way of ensuring democracy will still be flourishing by the time his babies have full control over their sphincters.

Keyboard warriors Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man IT’S claimed 38 celebrities around the world are suspected to have died by suicide following links to reality TV shows. That is some crazy number. That’s the headline I wanted to start my column with. Then I realised there is a glaring error with the word ‘celebrities,’ because actually they aren’t. Most are a bunch of kids who would do anything for a bit of fame and that’s the problem. Two kids from a show called Love Island are the most recent victims of seemingly not being able to handle the aftermath of being reality TV stars. It’s heartbreaking that this happens. I’ve never seen the show, but why continually churn out this garbage? There are loads featuring all sorts - Essex people, Northern housewives, people who force their kids to dance and win at any cost, and don’t forget the absolute twerps from Chelsea. It’s crazy and all total garbage. Plus, the people who take part then think they are celebrities and I have news for you - you aren’t. You have not earned the right to be
called that and that’s when the trouble starts. Some can’t cope when the offers stop coming in and they go to the darkest of places and tragically kill themselves. What else is terrible is that apparently if you read their social media accounts everything is fine and life couldn’t be better. Here lies another problem because obviously it’s not fine. I have Instagram and Twitter accounts and I’m forced to have Facebook if I wish to look at certain things. I follow a very limited number of people, but one of the things I’ve noticed is the hate which people give out on there. It’s horrific. And, of course, nobody knows how that affects the victim. Australian model and reality star Charlotte Dawson died in 2014 after facing Twitter trolls. One of the major problems is that anyone can say anything about anyone and that then becomes gospel. There is a TV critic call Dan Wootton who works for the worst of the red tops and he often tweets the most appalling stuff about celebs and has no interest in how that can cause them upset or hurt. If he doesn’t like you, for whatever reason, then that’s it. It’s time for all this to stop and understand that human life is more important than making crap TV shows and hiding behind a keyboard to pedal hate is just plain evil.

Life ‘is’ like a box of chocolates and indeed we never know what we will find on our path. We all know this. We have all experienced it and keep on experiencing this. Life is all about emotions and thoughts and we as humans always have the choice to look at what comes out that box of chocolates, in a positive way or a less positive way. We decide in a split second if we like the praline or not.

Carbon monoxide IT was good news to hear that the family of the poor man who died from carbon monoxide poisoning while on holiday in Cantabria has now received compensation for the tragic accident. I was surprised but pleased to hear that the case had settled so quickly and hopefully his relatives can now begin to heal. The case does raise the wider issue of carbon monoxide risk, however, and serves as a good reminder to us all to install carbon monoxide and smoke detectors in our homes. I personally also like to make sure a professional checks my boiler regularly. Arthur Drake
Citizen Sarah THE news that Sarah Almagro Vallejo has been given honorary citizenship of Marbella brought a tear to my eye. I cannot imagine how much this young woman’s life has changed since she lost all her limbs to septicaemia last year, but she continues to carry herself with such courage and optimism. I was delighted to read that local politicians have now recognised her bravery. It was also good to read that thanks to fundraising efforts, Sarah has now received prosthetic hands, and will soon receive prosthetic feet. Suicide stopped I WAS saddened to read about the teenage girl who a taxi driver reportedly prevented from killing herself in Marbella. While I am of course delighted to hear t h a t t h e g i r l w as ta lk ed down from the bridge and taken to hospital, it was shocking to hear that s h e wa s sa i d t o h a v e b ee n brought to that state because of bullying. With the rise of social media I believe the issue of teenage bullying is becoming worse. Cancelled passport I LIVE here in Spain and work in Moscow. Recently I was coming home from Moscow via Eindhoven and the Dutch police refused me entry because Malaga Consulate had cancelled my current valid Passport. I applied on April 4 to have my old passport cancelled as I had lost it. Instead Malaga Consulate cancelled my valid passport. I was left in Eindhoven airport police station with no help from anyone in the UK Consulate. Nobody on any of the socalled Helplines answered the phone - and it took one hour 45 minutes to get any response on an Online Chat Helpline UK Gov use. When I got a response it was to say that they could

So they took my request, went away, found my other passport number and

OUR VIEW Times are changing FOR many people there is a conundrum in Spain - the attitude of Spaniards to animals. On the one hand many lavish love and attention on their pets, just like people everywhere. But on the other there are said to be 12,000 events in the country, which involve some form of suffering to animals. And on top of that the abandonment of dogs and other animals is a huge problem, that requires voluntary charities all around Spain - many of them run by expats - to help. Even worse, there are still cases reported every year of hunting dogs being strung up to die, or thrown down wells when their owners have no further use for them. And for many outsiders looking in animal ‘cruelty’ is actually institutionalised with the bullfighting seen by its supporters as an integral part of Spanish culture. But what many people do not see is that things are changing for the better. And the showing of PACMA in the general elections on Sunday highlighted the growing influence on animal rights activists within the country. It is one of the very few political parties anywhere in the world which stands in elections in the name of animal protection. It garnered 326,000 votes, up more than 40,000 from the 2016 election. Only a quirk of Spanish electoral law stopped them gaining a seat for the first time. But PACMA is confident they will gain representation in the upcoming European elections. This would indeed show the world that the times are a changing in Spain when it comes to attitudes to animals.

Election: Victory for Pedro Sanchez and PSOE Good to see turnout was more than 75 per cent! Wish the apathetic UK could get so much interest. Great to see the Conservative PP get its just desserts with a major collapse in its share of the vote after all the revelations in the courts. I see the latest projections for England’s local elections on Thursday suggest a similar result for the Tory party with an expected loss of 1,000 seats! (wonder why?) Meanwhile in Spain, look forward to seeing Pedro Sanchez ease hardship among long-suffering Spaniards with socialist reforms. Not so good though to see a far-right party in parliament for the first time since Franco’s military dictatorship fell in the 70s. Youth orchestra FINAL CONCERT: The Almuñecar Mediterranean Youth Orchestra will end its season on Sunday.
By Sally Underwood THE Almuñecar Mediterranean Youth Orchestra is finishing its season with a concert in the town this Sunday. The group will end its sixth season at 8pm with a programme taking in classical music from around the world. Under the direction of Michael Thomas, the orchestra will play a piece by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev, which was premiered in Madrid in December 1935, and which will feature violinist Juan Utrera Moreno. After the break attendees will enjoy the popular Symphony No 9 in E minor, Op 95, better known as Symphony of the New World, by the Czech composer, Antonin Dvorak. The youth orchestra’s coordinator, Antonio Peralta, said: “The Mediterranean Youth Orchestra would like to thank the public which has supported us
with their continued assistance at all the concerts scheduled at the Almuñecar House of Culture, making it possible for the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra to consolidate its base on the Costa Tropical and continue to offer the area a prestigious cultural service.”
He added: “We especially want to express our gratitude to the councillor for Culture at Almuñecar Council, Olga Ruano, and her continued and intense collaboration with our orchestra since its foundation, in 2013, until today; since without their help, it would

By David Worboys WE have been considering the enviable quality of life of 1950’s Britain but there are, of course, a number of downsides. The first that springs to mind is the absence of the huge technological and communication advances that offer a more comfortable and more convenient life today. In the early 50’s, unless we had a telephone at home, every time we needed to contact anybody or any authority based more than a short bus ride away, it was necessary to head for the nearest telephone box. Bills were settled by writing a cheque and posting it. Houses were heated by coal fires. News was broadcast through a crackling wireless and music through breakable 78 records played on a gramophone that constantly needed winding up. As there were no computers or even pocket calculators, office workers and cashiers in shops and banks had to make the calculations in their heads or by scribbling on a pad. Bank statements issued by the banks were prepared with pen and
CONSULAR MATTERS MY Danish friend Peter has now told me that he wants a dog and he was wondering what the law is here in Spain. As Danish Consul and as a lawyer I always try to help people remain within the law, but in my particular case I have two rescue dogs so I am a dog lover and I am proud to be part of the dog owning fraternity. Peter wants to have a dog as he is now retired and it is good to have some company as he lives alone. Also it is a good way to keep his grandchildren occupied when they stay with him, and a way to meet people in the dog park or when he is just sitting in a cafeteria having a coffee with his dog beside him. It’s not common for me as a lawyer to advise on dog ownership, but maybe he chose me as I have two rescue dogs. Well the first thing in Spain is that the dog needs to be microchipped and have the corresponding vaccinations according to the age of the dog. Basically all vaccinations and the micro-chip have to be done during the first six months. After

Prior to the free-love culture of the 60’s, the kiss was a far more intimate experience than today. In dance halls the waltz and the foxtrot offered a young man the rare opportunity to enclose a girlfriend or a woman he had never met before in his arms. In general unmarried couples did not live together. When a girl invited a boyfriend to stay at her parents’ house, they slept in separate rooms. But we have traded a more orderly, innocent and, in many ways, a more gentle way of life for today’s world of confusion, cynicism, violence and selfishness.

There are a number of rescue centres and even groups on Facebook which help rehome dogs. Humour dies where idiocy thrives Barry Duke I’VE lost count of the number of times I’ve stared in disbelief at my computer screen and yelled ‘you have gotta be kidding me! What in the name of sweet sanity has happened to people’s sense of humour?’ It seems to me that any attempt to elicit a chuckle will be savaged for a variety of reasons, most of them utterly preposterous. Take, for example, the pickle Burger King got itself into earlier this month when it created an advert in New Zealand for a Vietnamese-style offering. ‘Take your taste buds all the way to Ho Chi Minh City with our Vietnamese Sweet Chilli Tendercrisp, part of our Tastes of the World range’ read the caption accompanying an Instagram ad. BK made the ‘grievous error’ of showing people trying to eat the burger with giant red chopsticks. In the same week it was reported from New Jersey that a woman destroyed a humorous Easter display in her neighbour’s garden because she found it offensive. The neighbour, a dentist named Wayne Gangi, created a tableau of mannequins dressed as Playboy bunnies bearing Easter eggs. Desiree Shepstone, who attacked the mannequins with garden shears, said she did so to protect her son. Ms ‘Scissorhands’ Shepstone - now facing
charges of criminal damage totalling more than $2,000 - complained “I have a son and he’s 16 years old, he is a good boy and he does not need to be seeing this every time I pick him up from school.” Well, I hate to break it to Shepstone, but teenage boys have access to much racier material than sexily-dressed mannequins. I also pity the boy for having a moron of a mum who thinks it’s OK to vandalise other people’s property. Even when people do things with the
very best of intentions they can fall foul of outrage culture, as the Labour party discovered during Easter week. They tweeted a message to British Jews wishing them ‘Happy Passover.’ What could possibly go wrong? A lot, as it happened. One of three images in the greeting was a loaf of bread. Jews don’t eat bread at Passover, and the party was accused, among other things, of ‘basic religious illiteracy.’ When I was in my teens I hung around a lot with mainly secular Jews,
and they were the most entertaining people I ever had the pleasure of knowing. Their ability to laugh at themselves helped imbue me with an irrepressible sense of humour, and from them I learned not to take life too seriously. They also taught me to stand up to bullies, and to challenge things which were genuinely unacceptable, such as the terrible racism which plagued apartheid South Africa. So one would think that an insignificant error in a well-meaning greeting would simply have been laughed off, but no. To restore some unity and balance, at least in the UK, we should sack the amateur clowns who facilitated Brexit and do what the Ukraine recently did; elect a professional comedian to lead the country.

A spacious five-seater with massive boot capacity and flat-fold seats also give it a high score for day-to-day practicality and with petrol and diesel engines in the line-up, manual and auto gearboxes and three trim levels, the C5 Aircross ticks all the boxes for those seeking versatile family transport. Prices start at €26,837 (£23,225) for the well-kitted Feel version, though many will opt for the midrange Flair models which add extra features including enhanced connectivity, sat-nav and rear-view camera. Enthusiasm was the order of the day T was an eclectic mix of Jaguars and their owners that gathered at Venta El Tunel on Saturday morning to prepare to celebrate four years of the JEC (Jaguar Enthusiasts Club). Old Jaguars, modern Jaguars and even a few non-Jaguars made up the enthusiastic group taking coffee in the sunshine whilst waiting to register with Club Presidente Philip Wray who had put the day together with the assistance of the delightful Jenny Wray, long suffering wife and JEC secretary. The weather had dawned bright and sunny with clear blue skies, the ideal environment for a car run. Not too hot, just comfortable! After plenty of time to chat and devour the old bacon sarni, the intrepid crews set off northwards on the old road towards Casabermeja, keeping to the west of the Montes de Malaga. This stunning piece of road boasts a thousand corners and winds its way, almost parallel to the AP46 Autovia, its maximum altitude of 870 metres near Zambra, where one can look out to the east and the south east and see, simultaneously, the snow on the Sierra Nevadas and the sea beyond Malaga. Just beautiful. The road is also a great favourite with training cyclists so plenty of allowance must be made for them. What a treat though for the locals and the cyclists to see a convoy of such beautiful Jaguars winding their way upwards in the early summer sunshine. This is one of the huge differences in motoring here in Spain and in the UK. A

group of cars such as these will be lauded and cheered by the wildly enthusiastic locals as they sweep past, a shame the same couldn’t always be said of the UK locals on the rare occasions this might happen there! Route organisers and JEC leaders Philip and Jenny led the group in their pretty,
black Jaguar XK convertible and Jaguars of all ages followed on, including this writer in a 2003 Jaguar XKR, a 4.2 Litre V8 Supercharged version still in immaculate condition and used regularly and co-driven on this occasion by Marilyn MacPherson, a new member to the JEC. Having skirted the town
of Casabermeja, passing Las Pedrizas, the route headed east, past Colmenar and on towards, but not into, Alfarnate. Turning off to the west and with stunning views of the mountains and rock formations of the Torcal, cars headed to Villanueva de la Concepcion, seeing more of the Torcal and taking the very pretty route through La
Hoya and Nogales to cross the Sierra de Chimenea where a well earned coffee stop was enjoyed. Amusingly most people were charged different prices for their coffee depending on the mood of the owner who seemed totally underwhelmed to receive this pleasant group!
There was a very short run in then to the beautiful Hotel Convento de Magdalena, in the countryside near Antequera, where a sumptuous six-course tasting menu was arranged. All this marvellous food and with wines included for a mere €42. Outstanding value! The lunch drifted on for quite some time with no-one in any hurry to leave and a few spirited, if off-key, renditions of ‘Happy Birthday’ were performed before guests wound their weary way home. All in all, another JEC success. The CCCA has, as always, plenty of things happening and to start May off there will be a dinner and Clubnight at Treetops Restaurante in El Chaparral on Tuesday, May 7. Then there will be a Club classic car run and lunch organised by Ian Giles on Saturday, May 11, which will start from Venta El Caserio on the A7 coast road between San Pedro and Estepona, and finish at the well-known Prado de Halcones Restaurante in the Halcones Commercial Centre, just above San Pedro. Messi cleans up THE title may not have been in doubt, but Barcelona still had to send for their master Lionel Messi to clinch their eighth La Liga trophy in 11 seasons on Saturday. He came off the bench after being rested to score the only goal in a 1-0 win at home to Levante. It was his 34th league goal of the season and means Barca have taken the title with three games to spare. They have a nine-point lead over Atletico Madrid, but a better head to head record means Barca cannot be overhauled. Atletico had earlier beaten Real Valladolid 1-0 through a second half Joaquin Fernandez own goal, but they suffered a nervous few minutes as Real Valladolid searched for an equaliser in their quest to avoid relegation. It appeared they may have succeeded when Santiago Arias appeared to handle the ball in the area, but VAR ruled it was not a penalty. The result leaves Valladolid third from bottom and two points from safety. Fellow strugglers Rayo Vallecona stayed in 19th place despite a surprise 1-0 win against third placed Real Madrid. On May 12 Barcelona will be hosting Louis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel, and winner of the last race Valtteri Bottas as the F1 show comes to town for the start of the European leg of the championship. But before that it is the turn of MotoGP to grab the limelight. The world’s top racers will be at Jerez this weekend as the championship leaders battle it out for the exciting event. Spanish fans have high hopes of a home win and will be on the edge of their seats to see if Alex Rins can follow up his debut win in the last round with victory at the Andalucian circuit. Fellow Spaniard Marc Marquez will be out for revenge as he aims to bounce back from a crash in Austin that hit his title chances. Meanwhile Italian legend, Valentino Rossi is desperate for a podium finish to keep him in the hunt. He took second place in Austin and now occupies the same position in the championship standings - not bad for a 40-year-old. Fellow Italian Andrea Dovizioso was fourth in the last round after starting from 13th on the grid, which was good enough for him to claim top-spot in the table. Cyclist dies in desert race SPANISH amateur cyclist Fernando Civera, 46, died of a suspected heart attack during the second stage of the Titan Desert competition in Morocco on Sunday. Civera, from Zaragoza, fell ill at kilometre 55 of 102 kilometres and a helicopter medical crew was unable to revive him. According to Spanish press reports, temperatures had reached close to 38º Celsius and only a third of the 640 participants managed to complete the ‘particularly hard’ stage.

Explaining the problem Valverde said: “I fell training on Thursday, I hurt myself at the base of the spine. Cutting Costa ACCORDING to reports in Mundo Deportivo Atletico Madrid have finally tired of the behaviour of their Spanish international striker Diego Costa and put him up for sale. He is currently serving an eight-match ban after being red-carded in the recent loss against Barcelona. He compounded the offence by using foul language to insult the referee, as well as ‘man handling’ the official.
