Job plea in tough times

By Tara Rippin & Joe Gerrard AN unemployed Mallorca man’s online plea for work has gone viral in the same week official figures showed thousands are reliant on state help to survive.

Twitter user Rhay Guinness tweeted on Monday asking for help to find employment, and within 48 hours his message had been liked 4,000 times and received 399 comments. It has since been retweeted 12,000 times.

Rhay wrote: ‘Hi. I’m going to ask for something that makes me very embarrassed: I NEED TO WORK, no matter what it is. I speak three languages and I perform well in almost any function. I would appreciate it and whoever has contacts in Mallorca, please inform me. I am desperate.

Thank you.”

It comes as new figures from the Consell de Mallorca showed some 12,100 people,

including more than 7,920 families, rely on state income support on the island.

The regional authority spends around €1.9 million per year on funding its income support programme.

Consell social services spokesperson Fina Santiago said there was now a segment of the population trapped in poverty.

€30 million repair work

Housing for abuse victims PALMA’S deputy mayor for Urban Development, Jose Hila, has announced plans to buy further housing for the most vulnerable and victims of domestic abuse.

The politician explained the budget of €950,000 would be split between the Department for Social Welfare and that for Equality.

Drier than normal

DEVASTATION: Fatal violent floods wreaked havoc across much of the heart of Mallorca.

REPAIR work after the floods which devastated Llevant and surrounding areas of Mallorca, and claimed the lives of 13 people, have so far cost the Balearic Government €30.5 million.

Six months on from the violent storms and 2,200 tonnes of waste has been removed, 173 kilometres of riverbeds have been attended to and nearly 30 kilometres of walls have been repaired.

The government has also dealt with more than 1,000 commercial and private cases, and loans have been given to local councils to help with the clean-up operation.

Subsidies and tax cuts or breaks have been agreed to those affected by the floods, which saw eight inches of rain fall in just four hours on October 9.

Determined to learn lessons from the disaster, a team of researchers from the University of the Balearic Islands have been investigating the cause of the fatal flooding, keen to dispel rumours there was a great wave of water or that the torrent had been poorly maintained.

According to the team, the torrent, which was expanded in 1989, was clean though it would have been overwhelmed by waste carried by the volume of water.

They are also of the opinion it is unable to cope with more than 500 cubic metres which can pass through it.

Other issues raised by the researchers is the presence of the oversized bridges which act like a barrier to the flow of water, and the fact there are buildings too close to the torrent.

THERE was 60 per cent less rainfall than normal in Mallorca between January and March according to Aemet in the Balearics.

This data is based on the period from 1981 to 2010, and it was reportedly higher in Ibiza (75 per cent) but far lower in Minorca (23 per cent).

However, Aemet sources claim that there are not drought conditions.

Rainfall data does not automatically mean that an official drought needs to be declared. But, if rainfall from now until summer isn’t classed as normal, the situation could become critical. Autumn is the rainiest season in the Balearics, followed by late winter and early spring. This year, the rainfall for the latter was significantly lower than normal.

Three muggers left Oliver unconscious on the pavement after stealing his wallet, watch and sun glasses.

On arrival at Juaneda hospital the victim had to have stitches to his scalp, as well as surgery for a broken nose and damaged shoulder.

The victim claims that the attack was completely unprovoked and came out of the blue. Motivation for the attack is unclear as the total value of the stolen property amounted to €40.

Mrs Butterworth has put out a plea for witnesses. As yet no arrests have been made.

A DRUNK pedestrian may have a motorist to thank for saving his life after he staggered down the middle of a busy Palma road at 7.30am yesterday (Wednesday). The driver followed him slowly down the road using his car as a shield from other traffic. Police subsequently fined the pedestrian.

Taxi break-ins FOUR taxis were broken into in the early hours of Tuesday as part of a wave of break-ins that have seen 12 Palma cabs targeted so far this year. The latest offences were in Sant Jordi and Son Ferriol, with police believing the attacks are the work of the same people.

Jagged coast THIS distinctly jagged beach on Spain’s northern coast was recently chosen alongside nine other places in a ranking of the country’s best hidden gems.

Sakoneta Beach, in the Basque Country province of Guipuzcoa, made it into El Confidencial’s ‘10 (Almost) Unknown Corners of Spain You Have to Discover’ table.

The newspaper said the cove, which lies between the towns of Deba and Zumaia, was ‘small and wild.’

When the tide is low, a series of

jagged rock formations are exposed.

They were sculpted by the sea over hundreds of years, creating a geological formation known as flysch.

Flysch refers to a process where channels separated by rocky outcrops are formed in alternating layers of hard and soft stone.

The process is gradual. As the tide comes in and out over several hundred years, new layers are deposited atop existing ones, stacking them until they reach their current height.

Attempted homicides A MAN aged 20 who is accused of deliberately running over four people in s’Arenal has been remanded in custody.

Gerardo JI is charged with four counts of attempted homicide, one of car theft and another of dangerous driving.

National Police points say he ran over the victims in a stolen car after a nightclub brawl. Two of the victims were seriously injured.

The events happened in front of

a club in Calle Cartago after a fight inside the premises. Gerardo is alleged to have left then returned in a car driving at high speed in the wrong direction, then mounting the pavement, hitting the group of people he had earlier fought with.

He then allegedly fled in another car driven by a friend of his.

Emergency services treated the victims aged between 15 and 28, with three needing to be hospitalised.

School exclusions LAST academic year there were 6,334 cases of school pupils being suspended from Mallorca schools, an increase of 75 per cent in three years.

In total 3,210 pupils were affected, with 300 of them being at primary school. In 2015-16 there were 3,619 suspensions, and 5,620 the following year.

Now the CCOO trade union says the figures are a symptom of ‘abandonment’ and social failure.

The union points out that while suspensions are sometimes neces-

sary, it wants the education authority to revise and modify regulations to avoid excluding pupils from school.

It considers it a malpractice which does not help reform unruly students, and feels there are better solutions to help disturbed children within schools, The union also drew attention to a trend of pupils isolating themselves through use of mobile phones, and wants more education on good practice when using electronic devices.

€550,000 pensioner grants THE Mallorcan Institute of Social Affairs (IMAS) has announced plans to award more than half a million Euros in aid for the over 65’s.

Margalida Puigserver, the body’s president, said the move would help finance the physical, mental and sensory recovery of pensioners.

Funding may also be awarded to those with physical limitations, in order to help them lead independent lives and improve their quality of life. To qualify for the grant, applicants must be aged over 65 at the time any expenses were incurred.

They must have been registered as a resident in Mallorca since before July 26, 2017, and not exceed an annual income of €15,039.18.

Aid may be granted to cover expenses made between July 26, 2017 and December 31, 2018. The deadline for submitting applications is Friday April 26.

‘Car thief’ caught

POLICE BUST: Officers arrested a child accused of breaking into cars.

THE National Police has arrested a child on suspicion of stealing from the inside of cars.

Following an investigation a t the be ginning of March, plainclothes officers arrested the boy as he allegedly tried to dispose of a stolen laptop.

Attraction closed THE Marivent Gardens in Palma will be closed for Easter until Wednesday April 24.

The gardens at Marivent Palace will close, as normal, during the festive period, following an agreement between the Government of the Balearic Islands and the Royal Household.

The gardens opened for the first time to the public almost two years ago and have since seen 166,605 visitors come to the attraction, 17,825 of which visited so far this year. Access to the site is free all year round, except for 15 days during Easter and between July 15 and September 15. The summer schedule is from May 1 to September 30 and 9am to 8pm, while the winter timetable, from October 1 to April 30, is from 9am to 4.30pm.

The gardens are spread across an area measuring 9,155 square metres and are wellknown for their cultural, botanical, and cultural qualities. The gardens also include a permanent exhibition of bronze sculptures by Spanish artist Joan Miro.

Road blocks TWO major Mallorca roads saw traffic jams of up to 11.5 kilometres during rush hour, after hail storms and floods.

Traffic was stuck on the Via de Cintura in the direction of Andratx between 8am and 9am yesterday (Wednesday). It came after sections of roads between Binissalem and Inca flooded causing drivers to take to the motorway.

The Llucmajor road in the direction of Palma also saw delays near the city’s airport. A crash involving two vehicles is said to have caused them.

Safe cycling BIKE rental companies will be urged to install lights on the back of the bicycles by the Consell of Mallorca, through the Viaria Safety Commission in an attempt to improve the safety of cyclists.

At the moment, the regulations do not require the installation of these lights, but experts are recommended the measure to improve visibility.

NEWS EXTRA Highest fertility MALLORCA has been declared within the most fertile in Spain according to INE National Statics, with 15.1 per cent of under 30’s having at least one child, a higher average than national figures where women wait until their mid-thirties.

Prolific gang brought down NATIONAL POLICE bust the infamous ‘El Pablo’ Palma drug-ring in Mallorca during the early hours of Friday morning.

A team of specialist police officers spread through the Soledad neighbourhood of Palma honing in on eight homes between Calle Teix and Randa. So far four men have been detained with more suspects to follow.

This most recent drugs bust is the result of a lengthy investigation into small scale yet persistent drug trafficking in the area.

The ‘El Pablo’ gang, locally known as the Pablo clan, has been working in Palma for three decades. In 2015 ‘El Ivan,’ the eldest son of gang leader ‘El Pablo’ was charged with restraining a minor.

On searching El Ivan’s home, police found a 16-year- old girl who had been locked up in order for Ivan and his friends to have sexual relations with her.

Casting chaos NETFLIX held an open casting call in Palma this week for their new series ’White Lines.’

Over 1,000 people of all ages could be seen queuing outside the Casa Cultural hoping to land a part.

Local film production firm, ‘Mallorca Film Commission,’ announced that Netflix would be filming in the locations of Mallorca and Ibiza this summer and that they were still looking for different profiles to cast.

The Netflix series, made by the producers of ‘The Crown’ and ‘Casa de Papel,’ is about a woman who swaps her life in Manchester for the Balearics in order to discover what happened to her missing brother, a celebrated dance music DJ.

First violent assault in Magaluf THE first violent attack of the tourist season in Punto Ballena, Magaluf occurred at the weekend.

The attack took place in the small hours of Sunday mo rn in g w h e n a g ro u p of s ix lo c a l y o u n g men a llegedly provoked the, as yet unnamed British tourist.

All the men in question had reportedly been drinking at the same establishment.

Police were immediately called and managed to drag the victim to safety but not before he sustained significant injury. All six perpetrators were detained for questioning.

Messi buys hotel ARGENTINE Barcelona Football Club player Lionel Messi has bought the Sea Sun Fona four-star hotel in S’Illot, Llevant de Mallorca, through his property company Explotaciones Rosotel.

This is Messi’s second investment in the Balearic tourism sector following purchase of the Es Vive hotel in Ibiza, renamed MiM Ibiza. Messi has another hotel in Spain, which is in fact the first one he acquired, the MiM Sitges, in Barcelona.

Barcelona FC star’s new 98-room hotel, Mallorca Fona, will open its doors on May 2 following renovations. It will be managed by Catalan hotel group Majestic, which advises the football star on hotel matters and also manages his other two hotels.

There is no doubt that Lionel Messi’s image has an international leverage which will benefit S’Illot and Mallorca in terms of promotion.

Jihadi brides longing for Spain THREE Daesh brides, stranded in the Al Hol refugee camp in Syria, want to return to Spain.

Yolanda Martinez and Luna Fernandez are Muslim converts while Morocco-born Lubna Miludi also has Spanish nationality.

The three women, who wear full niqabs ‘because we want to,’ survived the collapse of the caliphate’s last stronghold, Baghouz and now live in Al Hol with 73,000 other refugees.

Two are widowed while Martinez’s husband is a prisoner in Syria. Each insists their husbands

‘did not fight’ and occupied an administrative position.

“We just want to get out of here,” they said.

“They can’t condemn us for looking after our homes and our children in Daesh.”

Miludi has three children while Martinez and Fernandez have four. The latter is pregnant with a fifth and looks after another four children whose Moroccan parents are dead.

They claim that their husbands tricked them into following them to Syria in 2014.

Science summit SPANISH scientists travelled to the Portuguese city of Braga on Monday to discuss grants awarded by the European Research Council.

The researchers met at the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory.

Scholars and beneficiaries of European grants gathered to discuss how they were using their funding and the progress on their research.

Carlos Moedas, the EU’s Science, Research and Innovation Commissioner, told attendees they could be proud of their work and their use of European taxpayer’s money.

Missing dad reunited with family in UK A FAMILY in the UK has told of their joy after being reunited with a 32-year-old who went missing during a holiday to Benidorm.

The disappearance of 32-year-old Nick Brzezicki after an incident in the Costa Blanca resort sparked a huge social media campaign to find the man from Weston-super-Mare.

Mr Brzeziski was on a short break to Benidorm with a friend and was staying at the Sandos Benidorm Suites in the resort.

However, after an alleged incident at the hotel on Tuesday, he was arrested by Spanish police and appeared in court on Wednesday. He was last seen at around 11.30am when he left the court.

His wife Laura had flown to Benidorm to try and find him but her search was fruitless and she

flew back to the UK. It is now believed that after leaving court Mr Brzeziski attempted to walk the 50 kilometres from Benidorm to Alicante Airport but he collapsed on his way back and was picked up by Red Cross medics.

He finally contacted his mother and his family organised a flight back to Bristol on Saturday.

It is reported that he was met by police on arrival as he had been flagged as a missing person.

His wife Laura said: “I am so glad that he is home safe.

“He has quite a few bruises and has lost a lot of weight and is upset about what has happened.

“As a family we are over the moon to have him back safe.”

R and D spending A SPANISH research and development foundation has claimed that less than half of state spending allocated to the area went to projects last year.

The Cotec Foundation said government spending data showed less than €3.3 billion, 46.8 per cent of the more than €7 billion in research and development funding, was spent effectively.

The ‘execution rate’ in 2018, or the amount earmarked which made it to projects, was the second-lowest since records began in 2000 Cotec said.

Open to delay SPAIN’S Foreign Minister has said Madrid would accept a long extension to Brexit under certain conditions and added the country was committed to avoiding a no-deal withdrawal.

Josep Borrell said British Prime Minister Theresa May should tell the EU what she wants, including what she thought Brussels should give in exchange for a delay.

The minister’s comments came as EU member state leaders gathered in Brussels yesterday (Wednesday) for an emergency Brexit summit.

“Spain will do everything possible to prevent a hard Brexit.

“Not because we are not prepared for it but because of its negative consequences,” Borrel said.

The minister added he did not know what the best solution to the current Brexit impasse was.

If Brexit is extended then it would be up to the European Council to evaluate potential negative effects, Borrell said.

The minister’s comments come as Donald Tusk floated offering Britain a year-long extension to Brexit last week.

May wrote to Tusk last week to request an extension until Sunday June 30 to give her more time to get a deal through Parliament.

Britain was scheduled to leave the EU tomorrow (Friday) prior to yesterday’s summit.

Travel advice

By Joe Gerrard BRITISH embassy officials in Spain have issued new advice for people expecting to travel between Britain and Spain after Brexit.

The embassy said passports would need to be valid for at least six months if Britain leaves without a deal.

Spain has agreed to allow British visitors and expatriates to use its health system in both a deal and nodeal scenario but other countries may make different arrangements, officials added.

Britain was scheduled to leave the EU with or without a deal tomorrow (Friday) before yesterday’s emergency Brexit summit.

British Consul for Southern Spain Charmaine Arbouin said expatriates planning on travelling to Britain should take their residency cards with them to avoid confusion on the return journey.

“We recognise the current uncertainty for British nationals in Spain and we will continue to do all we

Shares plan LONDON’S Stock Exchange said it plans to reintroduce European Economic Area shares on its platform in the British capital in the event of a no-deal Brexit and added it would move its Europe-wide Turquoise platform to a new Dutch hub.

Spain reopens consulate SPAIN is to reopen its Manchester consulate as it

seeks to help its citizens in the UK cope with Brexit.

Illegal downloads fall THE number of files downloaded from the internet illegally in Spain has fallen by 12 per cent since 2015, according to a piracy watchdog.

The Observatory of Piracy and Habits of Consumption of Digital Contents’ figures showed loss of earnings due to internet piracy was more than €1.9 billion last year. The music industry saw lost earnings of €536 million, almost half of the total.

The consulate was closed at the height of the financial crisis in 2011 as the Spanish government sought to cut costs.

But now Spain feels the need to reopen it as Brexit looms, which may cause potential problems for the 150,000 Spaniards who live in the UK. Government spokeswoman Isabel Celaa said: “Faced with an imminent Brexit, we consider it necessary to reinforce our consular presence in Britain to provide legal security to Spaniards and assist them in any procedures or information they may need.”

Spain also has consulates in London and Edinburgh.

An opening date for the consulate was not given.

A COURT in Colombia has ruled that treasure worth at least €1 billion on the wreck of a Spanish galleon sunk in the Caribbean should be salvaged.

The Barranquilla court’s ruling came after a US company which claims around 50 per cent of the treasure on the San Jose which sunk in 1708.

It overturned a previous decision to put the salvaging on hold as Colombia and Spain continue to dispute who has the right to raise the wreck. Spain had attempted to delay the salvaging of the wreck and praised a decision last month from the Colombian government to do so.

Barranquilla’s Superior Court overturned a previous ruling in October 2017 which stopped the US company Sea Search Armada from salvaging the wreck.

The ruling follows a long-running dispute between Colombia and Spain which dates back to the wreck’s discovery by the former’s navy in 2015. Colombia claims they have the right to salvage the San Jose, which lies off Cartagena de Indies, due to it being in their waters.

Spain claims the ship - sunk during a battle with the British -is an underwater tomb, meaning it cannot be salvaged for commercial reasons under international law.

Spies swap intel advances MORE than 160 Spanish and Latin American experts have been debating in Granada the latest advances in intelligence and surveillance.

Each year the University of Granada’s International Security department organises a conference focusing on these topics which is open to students, university researchers and members of the Armed Forces.

The object of the conference’s 10th edition was to share ideas and good practices while creating collaboration networks between academics and intelligence professionals in the public and private sectors.

Netflix praises Spain THE head of Netflix has praised the film and television talent being cultivated in Spain as the company opened its first European production headquarters in the Madrid region.

Company CEO Reed Hastings said Spain showed that not all interesting films and television series were made in Hollywood.

The firm’s Casa Netflix is the first headquarters the company has set up in Europe.

Hastings said Netflix’s audience wanted to see more Spanish-made content.

“We have discovered a great need throughout the world for interesting stories. Stories are well-made in Spain,” Hastings said.

By Joe Gerrard SPAIN’S prime minister has likened the arguments used by pro-Brexit campaigners to those used by people in favour of Catalan independence, saying both were based on ‘lies.’

Pedro Sanchez told British, French, German and Italian media in a joint-interview that the two causes used similar techniques to persuade others. “They say ‘Europe’s stealing from us!’ or ‘Spain is stealing from us!’ or ‘If only we had more economic resources.’

“At the end of the day, I think that engaging in campaigns or political projects based on lies eventually leads societies down a blind alley and that’s really hard to manage,” Sanchez said.

A VILLAGE in Galicia has gone up for sale with a price tag of almost €85,480.

Acorrada is home to six stone houses and two grain stores. It lies in a valley in the northern Spanish region. Its population has steadily declined as residents have moved to larger towns and cities for work.

Former village resident Gustavo Iglesias joined with others to put the village on the market. “I would like someone to buy it and restore it so that it continues to live,” Iglesias said. The village is one of hundreds across Spain which has experienced depopulation in recent decades.

Recent data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) showed a total of 1,360 towns are home to less than 101 residents, up from 1,319 at the start of 2018.

The equivalent figure was 1,036, 10 years ago. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez recently said that a large part of the country was under threat from a ‘demographic winter.’

By Joe Gerrard POLITICAL parties in Spain will likely have to strike deals after this month’s general election, as polls forecast all will fall short of the majority needed to govern alone.

The ruling left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) has maintained the lead it won since taking power last June and has consistently polled above 25 per cent. A ‘poll of polls’ average of opinion surveys shows the party’s support is increasing faster than its rivals.

Support for the opposition conservative Partido Popular (PP) has also risen, but at a slower pace and now continues to hover around the 20 per cent mark. The centrist Ciudadanos is also trailing behind the PP at around 15 per cent.

The leftist Podemos has also lost support over the past year and its support has tanked to around 12 per cent.

The far-right Vox’s support has declined from 12 to 10 per cent in around a month follow-

Although PSOE would win the election by current polling, it would fall well short of the majority needed to govern effectively and without backing in the Congress of Deputies.

The most optimistic polls predict that they will win be-

tween 137 and 139 seats, almost 40 short of the 176 needed for an absolute majority. Others (see the poll tracker below) forecast them winning just shy of 120.

If those results play out on election day then PSOE will have to reach out to other parties. Podemos would likely be

approached first, with the two having worked together since June’s motion of no confidence.

But together they would still fall short. Ciudadanos has already ruled out working with PSOE so they and Podemos would have to approach small, regional parties to make up the shortfall.

The PP looks unlikely to win more seats than PSOE, but party officials are pinning their hopes on a right-wing coalition similar to that now governing in Andalucia.

The leaders of the PP and Ciudadanos, Pablo Casado and Albert Rivera respectively, have both said they would be willing to work together.

But their predicted seats combined with those of Vox would still leave them about 10 short of a majority. Voter support for them could also be at risk if they appear friendly with their electoral rivals at this stage.

The far-right Vox was created in 2013 and burst onto the electoral scene after winning 12 seats in Andalucia’s regional parliament in December.

The party’s rise mirrors other far-right populist movements across Europe such as La Liga in Italy and Marine Le Pen’s Rassemblement National in France.

Vox, led by Santiago Abascal, has made opposition to migration a key part of its platform. It is part of a broader Spanish nationalist agenda which has seen the party take a hostile stance to Islam and independence movements in Cataluña and elsewhere.

The party is economically liberal and has pledged to cut taxes, including on business, and do away with some regulation. It has also called for devolution to be ended and for political power to be recentralised in Madrid.

The party is also socially conservative and is opposed to same-sex marriage and has taken a hard-line stance on feminism, saying gender violence funding should be cut.

What to do in the Gibraltar ‘colony’ row event of an emergency in Spain DISPUTE: Gibraltar authorities branded the use of the term ‘disgraceful.’

LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics.

HERE in Spain there is a general number for all emergencies, 112.

No area code is needed and the number can be called from any phone, including mobiles without a Spanish SIM card.

The responders speak a number of languages, and you can also fax or SMS 112.

In addition, there are individual emergency numbers, depending on the type of assistance you need.

It’s a good idea to keep a printout of them handy, in your bag or wallet, in the home and in the car.

And it can’t hurt to have a few helpful Spanish medical/emergency terms written down, just in case you don’t get an English-speaking member of staff.

National Police, also known as National Police Corps (Cuerpo Nacional de Policia, CNP), deals with criminal offences and public order in towns and cities, and can be contacted by calling 091 or 902 102 112.

The latter was set up for non-Spanish to report burglaries, car theft or a break-in when documents and belongings are lost or stolen. Available in English from 9am to 2pm, all week long, the service is also available in French, German and Italian.

Once the telephone report is made,

claimants have 48 hours to check and sign their statement at the police station of their choice.

In the case of robbery, where threat or force has been used, victims should call 091 at the time, then go directly to a police station to make a report.

The Guardia Civil is a military force which operates mostly in rural areas and is responsible for drug offences, fatal car accidents, robberies and murders, and can be contacted on 062.

Local Police (Policia municipal) cover their local town or city area for traffic offences and control, lost property and crimes such as theft and neighbourhood disputes. You can reach them on 092.

And a special helpine, 016, has been set up specifically to report instances of gender violence.

For an ambulance (ambulancia) and health emergencies, call 061 or 112, and in the case of a fire call the fire brigade (cuerpo de bomberos) on 061 or 112.

For problems at sea, the Maritime Rescue Service (Salvamento Seguridad Maritmo) can be contacted by calling 900 202 202, and the Red Cross (Cruz Rojo) on 902 222 292. There is also a Red Cross 24- hour helpline 900 100 333.

SPAIN has welcomed the European Parliament’s passing of measures which referred to Gibraltar as a ‘colony,’ a great step forward as disputes between London and Madrid over the territory continue.

The measures passed by MEPS, which cover postBrexit travel visa arrangements for British citizens, referred to the enclave off Southern Spain as a ‘colony of the British crown.’ It also referred to Gibraltar being

included on a UN list of non-self governing territories.

A Spanish government spokesperson said it would help Spain’s claims over the territory which was ceded to Britain in 1713 under the Treaty of Utrecht.

“It is the first time the European Parliament and member states have recognised that Gibraltar is a colony,” the spokesperson said.

Favourite destinations ANDALUCIA was the most popular region for Spanish travellers in 2018, according to National Institute of Statistics (INE) figures.

INE data showed 16.6 per cent of Spanish tourists holidaying in the country opted to stay in Andalucia. Cataluña was the next most popular with 12.8 per cent, followed by the Valencia Region with 9.9 per cent.

The Balearic Islands, Navarra and La Rioja were the least popular with 1.8 per cent, 1.3 per cent and 0.8 per cent respectively.

Travellers to the Balearic Islands spent €75 a day on average, the highest of any region.

Patent applications THE University of Barcelona has submitted the highest number of patent applications to European authorities out of any in Spain in 2018, according to a new report.

fice’s (EPO) Annual Report for this year also showed Spanish companies and inventors submitted 1,776 applications last year, a record high.

The amount went up by 6.3 per cent compared to 2017.

Theresa May previously said it was ‘completely inappropriate’ to refer to Gibraltar as a colony.

Gibraltar Chief Minister Fabian Picardo said the document’s use of the term colony was ‘disgraceful.’

Gibraltar authorities said in a statement: “It is obvious that extreme pressure exerted by Spain and the bullying tactics of Spanish MEPs on purely nationalistic grounds has led to the acceptance of the reference.”

Road hazards A TOTAL of 195 black spots have been reported on Spanish roads so far this year, up from 190 in 2018 according to new figures.

The European Automobile Association’s (AEA) annual report showed risks on roads increased by 2 per cent over the past five years.

Valladolid Province’s N-122 motorway’s Junction 358 is the most dangerous stretch of road in Spain, according to the report. A black spot there is higher than the national average of 421 on Spain’s hazard index.

Junction 12 of the A-55 near Mos in Pontevedra Province had the highest number of accidents at 123 with 205 injuries.

Vodafone TV package plan BRITISH-BASED telecommunications firm Vodafone is planning to slash prices for its TV package offering in Spain, to compete with Spanish rival Telefonica.

The company has announced plans to abandon the existing model of offering large packages. It is now set to offer customers more options on which channels they get, as well as cutting sale prices.

Vodafone’s television director Ignacio Garcia Legaz said the company was also working to offer streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime as part of new packages.

PM praises tourism sector SPAIN’S prime minister has said the tourism industry helps to break down barriers between the country and others and offers ‘enormous opportunities’ to revitalise depopulated areas.

Pedro Sanchez said Spain could look forward to returns from the €3 billion invested by companies in the country’s tourism industry. He was speaking at the 19th annual World Travel and Tourism Council in Sevilla City.

Sanchez said tourism offered Spain and interior areas experiencing falls in population particularly, the chance to experience a new lease of economic life.

“All records for tourism in Spain were broken in 2018. Spain is an amazing country, home to authentic treasures which deserve to be discovered,” the prime minister said.

Spain was now looking to expand its tourism offering beyond traditional ‘sun and beach’ holidays by opening up the interior to cultural and food and drink travellers, Sanchez added.

Sanchez called on the sector to be sustainable, saying it was the only way to be efficient. The prime minister added the success of tourism was tied

up with a well-funded state which could support the industry.

New technology such as artificial intelligence would be a ‘great ally’ to tourism and the sector’s growth will help to tackle economic issues including inequality, Sanchez said.

“Tourism is a symptom of progress and a way of understanding the world.

Travelling creates open, tolerant and diverse societies which have mutual respect for each other.

“Now more than ever we need to expand our horizons and not build walls but create new frontiers,” the prime minister said.

PP’s economic plans set out THE opposition conservative Partido Popular (PP) has said it will make hiring easier for companies if it wins this month’s general election.

The party is campaigning to deliver a ‘fiscal revolution’ which would see corporation tax cut to under 20 per cent for all firms. The PP has also vowed to streamline regulations by creating an ‘administrative highway’ fast-track system.

PP economy spokesperson Daniel Lacalle said the party would also help small and medium-sized companies cope with the recent hike in the minimum wage to €900.

Advice for income tax returns FINANCIAL experts from a Catalan university have offered taxpayers tips on how to fill out tax returns after submissions opened last week.

Specialists from the Open University of Cataluña (OUC) said taxpayers should submit their returns as far ahead of the Monday July 1 deadline as possible in case problems arise. Property values should be checked against those listed on registries and should

be aware of new deductions and allowances including one for maternity which has risen to €1,200, they added.

Entrepreneurs who have created new companies should also be aware they can make deductions of 30 per cent, a maximum of €60,000, the experts said.

The OUC specialists said taxpayers should double check arrangements in their regions as rules can vary.

Firm plots expansion FOOD delivery company Deliveroo has drawn up plans to expand its Spanish operations from 30 cities to 60, with country director Gustvo Garcia Brusilovsky saying the firm would become more efficient as it grows and gathers more customer data.

Bank rule BANKS and other financial companies will have to send details about their payment accounts to Spain’s central bank every June under new rules which came into force on Friday, governor Pablo Hernandez de Cos has announced.

Eurozone growth SPAIN has bucked a eurozone trend of slowing economic growth with the fastest rate of expansion in 10 months, according to data from the Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI).

Index figures, from the IHS Markit analysis firm, showed orders in the services sector drove growth in Spain.

A slowdown in manufacturing sector orders created a drag on overall eurozone growth, data showed.

IHS Markit said in a statement: ‘The strong conditions of Spanish demand helped push up new orders while another notable increase in employment helped strengthen capacity and allowed companies to catch up.’

The Spanish Commercial Activity Index, which measures the performance of the service sector, roses from 54.5 points in February to 56.8 points last month. Any figure above 50 indicates growth. The eurozone’s PMI index stood at 51.6 points in March, down from 51.9 points in February.

The PMI Index assesses growth based on new orders, inventory levels, production, supplier deliveries and employment.

Fashion innovation ZARA, Mango and El Corte Ingles are the three Spanish fashion brands most valued by small and medium-sized companies in terms of technological innovation, according to an industry study.

Adgoclick’s report found clothing chain Zara led the ranking. Its innovation unit, headed by Alejandro Ferrer and David Alayon, has created systems capable of detecting customer preferences while they are in store, by using location data and other information.

The report placed fashion brand Mango in second place as the firm announced plans to open a digital innovation centre in Barcelona.

The plans are reportedly designed to boost the company’s commitment to its digital offering. Mango’s online services accounts for more than 15 per cent of company turnover and the firm is aiming to boost that to 20 per cent by the end of 2019.

El Corte Ingles, which came third, was found to have developed a strong digital strategy. The company recently announced a two-pronged approach to improving customer experience both on and offline.

Stock market index rise THE value of shares traded under the IBEX 35 index on the Spanish stock exchange stood at 9,503, an increase of 0.16 per cent during a half day last week to levels not seen since September 2018.

Dia offer LUXEMBOURG-BASED investment company Letterone has said it will not improve on its 67 cents a share buyout offer for Spanish supermarket chain Dia as talks for a capital injection of €500 million for the struggling firm continue.

El Corte Ingles has signed a deal with Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba to boost its digital offering. It also now offers a home delivery service to customers across Europe, with buyers getting items delivered in three days or less.

deals with a number of other firms to offer experiences in store and make visits more about shopping. La Liga is among those who have signed up.

Adgoclick’s top 10 ranking also featured Pull & Bear in fourth place, Uterque in eighth and Massimo Dutti in 10th.

Rent debts THE amount of unpaid rent in Spain grew by 5.7 per cent last year, according to a housing industry study which also showed the average outstanding payment was €6,000 and the average time without payments was eight months.

Justice: Too much to ask?

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT WHAT must it be like to be a dedicated police officer who, through hard work, dedication (and probably a mountain of paperwork), finally manages to get a perpetrator into court, only to see them walk away free, because some bewigged berk decides that he or she deserves some form of leniency!

These High Court clowns are often so unbelievably out of touch and pompous they are probably more familiar with ‘passing the port’ than passing appropriate sentences. Their naive lack of judgements must also, I’m sure, profoundly dampen any enthusiasm or confidence the officers involved have for the legal system which they are expected to support and act for. They must often feel like technicians who’ve created an intricate piece of valuable machinery, only to see their employers stick it on Ebay at a knockdown price.

How can this incompetent bunch consider themselves impartial purveyors of British justice, when every week up pops yet another example of their utter inadequacy in matters of criminal retribution? Just last week there was yet another glaring example of their judicial incompetence.

It concerned a burglar with a long record of offences who had broken into the home of a pregnant woman while her husband was out at work.

Petrified, the poor woman was hiding in the bath-

As he grappled with him, the young thug called to his mate outside that he was caught. “Stab the f****” screamed his mate. “Just stab him and get out of there.”

With this threat of serious injury highly possi-

ble, the husband let the man go and he escaped with an Armani watch, cash and gift cards. The victim’s poor wife subsequently suffered a miscarriage which was later directly attributed to the traumatic experience of the raid.

Due to dedicated police efforts, the perpetrator was caught and finally brought to court where he

admitted the crime, and also owned up to a later offence where he had threatened another victim with a hammer in the process of a further robbery, whilst on bail.

Obviously this man was a hardened criminal and should have been sent down for a considerable length of time? Wrong! Judge Sylvia Carter was swayed by his defence lawyer and decided that he had been ‘Egged on by his mates!’ She sentenced him to 12 months community service and he walked free from the court. I mean, just how naive can you get? This lowlife was probably out plundering some other poor victim’s house the same night.

If I were the police I’d be spitting nails at this result of my endeavours, and at the very least, it would sorely discourage me from putting my best efforts into any subsequent investigations.

It’s a review of our non-sackable Judges which we need. Perhaps if we see some proper sentencing from these privileged pillocks it would encourage more people to join the force and hopefully raise the morale of those already serving.

Perhaps this would also lead to the public feeling a little safer. Or is that really too much to ask?

A British journalist realised he was hooked when he used an app to track his phone use. Its findings: he picked up his phone a thousand times a week, about 150 times a day. He spent 45 minutes of his first hour jabbing at the screen, received 300 notifications a week, and realised the true extent of his addiction when he kept hearing the phone buzzing even when it wasn’t.

• Leave your phone in your pocket or bag when interacting with actual people.

• Keep your phone out of sight when commuting.

• Don’t take the phone with you into the bathroom or toilet.

Well, it’s a start. Get past these and you’re ready for the true tests of phonelesshood: leave your phone outside your bedroom at night, put the phone in one place when at home instead of carrying it around, block work e-mail from your phone after-hours, and go out to dinner without your phone. If you get that far (go on, I dare you), you’re ready for the two final, ultimate challenges: Keep your phone on flight mode all day, only deactivating it when you really need it. Keep it switched off from Friday night to Monday morning.

Frankly, I suspect alcoholism might be easier.

The benefits of boredom CONSPIRACY theorists absolutely love the notion that our bodies are being radiated by our phones, but the authorities won’t tell us. It might certainly help today’s phone addicts if they thought it was true.

‘Twitchy hand syndrome,’ is now a recognised affliction for those wanting to check their devices but unable to (most typically in meetings).

A friend recently decided to deprive herself of an hour’s sleep in the mornings so she could check her social media in bed.

Researchers warn of whole generations now unable to cope with boredom, that languorous state which so often leads to much of the world’s creativity.

So when was the last time you just stared into space or sat admiring the world; on the horizon, not on your phone?

ONE of the arguments for leaving the EU was so that the British government could manage its own affairs rather than be subject to the laws of Brussels or Strasbourg.

Instead, the present impasse shows the British government is incapable of running a corner store let alone look after the interests of the nation or its people. This is my view of where Britain is heading.

Pillar to post YOU would think in today’s modern era of computers it would be relatively simple to replace a stolen residency card. My wife’s handbag was stolen in Barcelona railway station in January. We went to a police station and got the necessary paperwork.

On returning home to Calpe, where we have been tax paying residents since 2006, we made an appointment and four months later went to Benidorm to replace the card.

But we were not told they wanted €12.

Or that we needed to rearrange our appointment. On returning the wait was two hours. We were then told the police report did not state the items that were stolen. So now my wife has to prove she lives here.

If only they looked at their records, but that would be too easy I suppose.

Padron expiry WRITING this, I have no idea what tomorrow will bring regarding Brexit and unfortunately I think the same can be said for the British government.

Precisely because of this I need everything in order and having moved last year I wanted my new address on the piece of paper saying I’m a permanent resident.

As I live in an inland backwater I had to go the Oficina de Extranjeria in Valencia City. Once there I was told my Padron certificate had expired.

I obtained another, went back to Valencia and I’m now registered under my new address. But I thought I’d warn readers that they are on the Padron for as long as they want, but the piece of paper that proves it expires three months after it is issued.

Tragic time I WAS deeply saddened to read on the Euro Weekly News website about the young girl who died while riding in a tractor with an adult on a farm in Cantabria.

We hear so much about ‘health and safety gone mad’ but incidents like this are a reminder that tragic accidents can take place so quickly, however.

I hope the adult who was seriously injured recovers soon and my heart goes out to the family who have lost their child.

LATE WINTER: Snow blanketed parts of Andalucia at the weekend.

Dusting of snow I SAW the images of snowy conditions across Andalucia on the Euro Weekly News online.

Despite having lived here for over 10 years, I never cease to be amazed at how quickly the weather in Spain can change. Just two weeks ago my family were over from the UK for a short holiday and we were able to spend a day at the beach. It was so hot we even had to leave early! Now, it is like living in another country altogether, and I am sure next week we will be back to tropical sun again.

MADRID has hailed the reference to Gibraltar as a ‘colony’ in EU Brexit documents as a diplomatic victory, but pursuing such grievances now hardly helps Spain in the long run.

Madrid said it was the first time the EU had used the term. It follows decades of dispute between Spain and Britain over who has the right to run the Rock.

Regardless of how legitimate Madrid’s Gibraltar claims are, now is not the time to bring them up. Spain has willingly used ongoing wrangling over Brexit to try and get concessions on Gibraltar and remind the world of its territorial claims. Brexit is a high-stakes game. Not only for London and Brussels but also for countries like Spain which benefit from tourism and trade with Britain.

Spain’s work to avoid a no-deal Brexit and their efforts to guarantee arrangements for expatriates and holidaymakers regardless of the outcome is of course welcome. But their consistent push for concessions on Gibraltar days before Britain faces leaving demonstrates a need to reassess their priorities.

Brexit negotiations were always going to open a Pandora’s Box of claims that other member states had previously bottled up.

Spain has already been granted concessions on Gibraltar on taxes and the right to conduct future talks on the territory solely with Britain.

But after more than two years since negotiations began, the time has come to stop indulging in nationalistic grievances and get back helping prevent Brexit ending disastrously.

Not so in Spain. He should concentrate on his own country first and its problems. The Euro elite do NOT listen to the concerns of its own citizens and treats them with contempt. A lot of problems going on in other EU countries ie Greece, France, Germany, Spain, and others is being suppressed from the news media.

Unfortunately the EU thinks one cap fits all, it does not. It appears some countries in the EU, France for one, has never learned from its past. So instead of trying to enforce their ideals on citizens it should look, listen and be one with its citizens, Catalan has every right to vote on independence.

That is what democracy is about. It just a shame that governments don’t know the real meaning of democracy but its people do.

The fact that we’re congratulating Nicki Burgess on her 10 years with the Euro Weekly News says quite a lot.

Her role as Operations Director for the newspaper is one of the most demanding as the newspaper gains more prominence and influence in the media.

SPANISH or Castellano? Time was, when Spain’s language was called Spanish although Catalans, Valencianos, Basques and Gallegos, not forgetting Asturians with their appropriately-named Bable, spoke their local languages at home.

Once they could do so officially, that’s when Spanish began to transmute into Castellano and the term is finding favour in Latin America, too.

At the recent Congreso de la Lengua Española held in Cordoba (Argentina) several speakers insisted that Latin America speaks Castellano, not Spanish.

Doesn’t sound right, somehow: why label Latin America’s principal language with the name of an inland, inward-looking region frequently associated with a sombre style of furniture?

Castile-La Mancha - El Campo de Montiel ALTHOUGH made famous worldwide through the tales of the unfortunate and disillusioned Don Quijote, the region of Castile-La Mancha is largely overlooked by the modern tourist. Despite being the third biggest autonomous region in Spain, it is one of the most sparsely populated; yet it is still an area of unspoilt beauty and has plenty to offer all types of visitor.

It certainly has a lot more to show than deserted, arid plains and the odd bleak windmill as recounted by Cervantes.

Castile-La Mancha forms the main part of central Spain and is bordered by the provinces of Castilla y León, Aragon, Madrid, Valencia, Murcia, Andalucia and Extremadura. It is divided into five provinces, namely, Toledo, Cuenca, Guadalajara, Ciudad Real and Albacete.

Campo de Montiel is a comarca in the southern part of Castile-La Mancha that sits within the southeast region of Ciudad Real and the southwest part of Albacete. This is a hilly area of natural beauty with great historic and cultural wealth. There are

sists of 15 interconnected turquoisecoloured lakes that stretch for 25 kilometres through the valley of the Alto Guadiana. Here you will find numerous species of birds including bustards, herons, eagles and many species of duck. During the summer visitors are able to enjoy the waters in the bathing areas and practise sports such as diving, fishing and canoeing.

Sorry, no parking Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man I JUST spent a few days in wonderful Sevilla. I booked a four-star hotel which was advertised as having parking on-site.

As soon as I got there and asked where the car park entrance was, I was told it was closed for repairs.

The hotel was on a main road so I couldn’t leave the car there, and the hotel guy said if I did a left, a right, another left... I didn’t hear the rest, just the last bit, which was ‘it’s €12.50 a day.’

I asked why they didn’t inform their guests before arriving that the car park was closed. After all, I’d had numerous emails from them or their booking agents pointing out offers I could partake in.

I, of course, got the shrug. He then pointed out that I could take a chance and park on the other side of the road on a bit of wasteground which was free, but wasn’t as secure as the other one.

I decided to take my chances and parked on the wasteground. I was greeted by a bunch of self-appointed parking attendants and one of then instantly took me to my al-

lotted space and guided me in. He then gave me my ‘parking permit,’ I gave him a couple of euros and that was the parking and the first problem sorted.

Next, we get into our room and there were no tea or coffee making facilities.

And, by the way, there is no restaurant in the hotel either, just room service which I find out is basically; you phone down and order food off the menu then they send out for takeaway.

Again, something I didn’t realise, as I’d taken the breakfast included option so assumed there was a working kitchen there.

Then there was the room itself; it was pretty small. Now you might be wondering why I didn’t do my usual ‘can I see the third room first’ routine.

Well, I was on a bit of a warning from Mrs S, as we were celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary and she wanted a quiet few days away without me complaining or being grumpy. I tried my best - honest but then I couldn’t resist the remark I made to the duty manager, that as there was no mirror in the bedroom and only a small one in the bathroom, I hope he didn’t mind me getting dressed in the lift as there were four full-length mirrors in there.

ALREADY we’re being nudged to deal with bingo wings and turkey necks plus back fat and muffin tops and cankles (calf and ankle joining up) and ninkles (wrinkled knees) and not, so far, wankles (wrinkled cankles) or finkles (fat ninkles), though surely it’s all on the horizon. Now we’re being offered anti-ageing treatments like vampire facials, derma-rolling and micro-needling to make the face look younger and healthier.

Micro-needling (uses tiny pins to mildly prick the skin, supposedly making it produce more collagen and reduce wrinkle lines) sounds just about bearable, whereas vampire or ‘Dracula’ facials involve blood and needles; two of my least favourite things.

A nurse takes a small syringe of blood from your arm from which the platelet-rich plasma is extracted. Your face is then covered in a topical anaesthetic so when the plasma is injected back into it, it hurts less allegedly.

But then, these are strange times we live in now. With regular news items about teenagers choosing Botox and other antiageing procedures, male TV actors/presenters having ‘work done’ to look better (ie younger) on HD TV let alone what A-listers

LAURA PENN ‘PENN TO PAPER’ ALMOST by accident I have been researching weird and wonderful things about this unique island of ours. Of course the Balearics are famous for tourism all over the world, but (as we all know) is so much more to Mallorca than Magaluf.

Many years ago I began to keep a notebook of things that I found out about the island that were unknown to me - this has grown into an encyclopaedia! There are so many cultural traditions, foods, fiestas and products that are particular to this island I can now fill a book - or a website with them all. I call it my A-Z of Mallorca and one of the most amazing things is how many top class products we produce. At only 3,640 km square, this island punches above its weight when it comes to making things!

Fruit is an obvious one - the island is awash with fruit trees: oranges, clementines, limes, lemon and apricots abound. Then there are melons - who could forget the annual Melon Fair at Vilafranca? Almonds are a biggy too - but what

WE live in a small community of four apartments on the main street of our village. We are the only full-time residents. Each apartment has toldos (awnings) on the front balcony and all are in a very bad state of repair but matching (yellow/grey striped). Three owners agree the toldos need replacing and should be replace with either plain grey or yellow which would bring a much more modern look to the building.

The owner, who acts as our ‘community leader,’ says we have community rules and she wants written confirmation we all want the awnings replaced. Never have we received any community rules or had a meeting for the last five years. Could we go ahead and get the new material without further talks?

Experts agree that real security in an area depends far more on the collective attitude of the neighbourhood to security than just the individual investment in the security of the house.

Security tips for your home aside, there is a lot you should try uncover for yourself about the area if you are a buyer.

Fortunately in Spain crime rates are relatively low, especially when compared to the big cities in some other European countries. But there are always neighbourhoods which are best avoided for a bit of peace of mind.

This will sometimes be reflected in the price, but remember in Spain there are many amazingly good value properties available in friendly and comfortable areas.

So how do you know which is a safer area than another?

Your first port of call should be your estate agent. A true professional will have an intimate knowledge of the areas they cover and will be able to give you reliable advice. But there other things you can do:

HOW SECURE?: Be sure to ask a few questions.

1) Talk to the neighbours personally. At least the houses on each side of the property you want to buy, as well as those in front and behind the subject, or apartments in the same block. When chatting to the neighbours pay attention to the consistency of their comments.

2) Observe the security in those homes and ask if any incidents resulted in them taking any extra measures.

3) If your home is part of a ‘community of owners’ - and most are in Spain - talk to the president of the community and if possible the administrator if at all worried. You should be able to get a feeling of the security of the area from them.

4) Many urbanisations have private security patrols; don’t be alarmed!

They are there not necessarily because there is a significant problem, but to make sure one doesn’t develop. Find out which security company is used

and note the level of satisfaction for these services.

5) Take a good drive around the property and look for any obvious concerns. Is the street a

popular route for pedestrians or taxis at certain times of the day?

Are there a lot of vagrants in the area? Is there a commercial area close to you which may be positive or negative (remember at night commercial areas are usually quiet and deserted) In conclusion, remember to be realistic; there are no crime free areas.

Once you have bought a home you should in any event call a couple of security companies to come and give you a free security evaluation.

They will give you a better insight to what you can do to make your home even more secure and less inviting for thieves.

• If anything is ‘illegal,’ remove it (often there are extensions running to a braai spot etc; just remove the wiring properly).

Even if the real estate market is very active and you can get away with fewer fix-ups before selling, a home which needs repairs will achieve a lower price.

For a little bit of effort and a small budget you can remove these negatives which can very easily create a poor impression, and may result in your property being slow to sell.

Prevailing winds are usually north-easterly, moisture rich trade winds, which form cloud caps over the western islands and save us from an African climate. If the last couple of years are anything to go by, however, God help future generations, because what’s been blowing in here is lots of Calima from Africa.

We’re turning into Africa, as is Andalucia and eastwards, as you’ll no doubt be aware if you read El País or watch Spanish media.

There’ll be 40 per cent less water available relatively soon.

The Spanish government is supposedly ‘grappling with the disastrous implications of this future reality now.’

La Gomera, for example, looks much like Peru in this respect. Man-made terraces form a large part of the island’s unique landscape, making it the ideal venue for

the fourth ITLA (International Terraced Landscapes Association) Congress, titled ‘ReEnchanting Terraces’ in March.

ITLA’s objective is to study, map, restore and conserve these landscapes, many of which are abandonded, across the planet.

Most of Macaronesia (the Canaries, Cape Verdes, Azores and Madeira) are terraced to some extent, as are areas of China, Japan, Italy, France, Slovakia, Croatia, Peru and more.

Did Franco contemplate these islands’ extraordinary terraced landscapes, whilst limbering up for the dictatorship, when he was Canarian military commander?

Perhaps, as he ordered the massacre of thousands of men, women and children, the islanders’ resilience and capacity to adapt their environment worried him?

HIDDEN away is the parched landscape of Andalucia you can find an oasis of verdant green the natural park of Grazalema.

The magnificent rocky outcrop of Peñon Grande that towers over both the village and the whole park is the reason for all the rain - it is the first high peak that warm wet winds from the Atlantic encounter when they hit Spain.

The copious rain has made this a unique

place in Andalucia. An ecology has developed over thousands of years that combines Mediterranean and more northerly species, with microclimates providing a haven for all manner of wildlife.

Grazalema village is an idyllic spot from which to explore the glories of the park. Its steep cobbled streets and selection of small bars and restaurants are well worth a visit on their own, as are the magnificent views.

The restaurants are extremely proud of the fish that comes from Europe’s most southerly trout river, which wends its way through this area of outstanding natural beauty.

A glimpse of McLaren’s new car MCLAREN has unveiled a bit more of its much-anticipated grand tourer, but it is teasingly keeping it in camouflage wrap to hide its full glory.

Up until now the only pictures of the car have seen it clad in shape-changing, additional body panels used to hide its true form.

But now, the car ’s ‘sleek and boldly elegant design,’ (according to McLaren) can now be discerned although the lightweight body remains covered by a shrink-wrapped livery. If you want to see more you will just have to be patient; the company is promising it will begin to peel off this disguise this May. The application of the

Watch the video at www.testdrives.biz gives interest. It’s an estate car with the feel of an SUV. The seats, which are covered in a mix of grey fabrics are comfortable. The door inserts in the rear consist of hardwearing plastic, which is a good choice for mucky children.

As the children still require child seats, seatbelt points need to be well-spaced to avoid causing me unnecessary aggravation when belting them in. Unfortunately, although the width of the Kia is certainly not slim, the belt points don’t allow for the cumbersome child seats meaning it takes twice as long to strap each child in. Really annoying.

My eldest daughter Harriett, seven, must have been in more than 100 cars already and she, like me, is always so excited about the arrival of a new one.

The children enjoy spotting the

different cars throughout the journey and even Henry spots a number of Kias.

The Stonic provides a comfortable drive for both the driver and their passengers. It is quite a nippy car and the sound of the diesel engine can only really be heard when it starts. With engine stop/ start it is a pretty efficient vehicle too, delivering around 60mpg over the course of our time together.

The six-speed manual gearbox is fairly smooth and the cruise control is easy enough to operate. Other refinements include air conditioning, all round electric wing mirrors, power folding wing mirrors and a useful reversing camera.

Overall, I like the Stonic.

Both outside and in it’s an attractive car with a sensible price tag.

UNDERWAY: Cyclists were racing in the Vuelta al Pais Vasco this week.

On their bikes CYCLISTS arrived in the Basque Country for the start of this year’s Vuelta al Pais Vasco, the first stage of which began on Monday.

Stage one of the race began and finished in Zumarraga. It saw riders cover a distance of 11.2 kilometres of narrow and windy roads through the heart of Green Spain.

Around 141 riders took part in the race. Germany’s Maximilian Schachmann finished on top with a time of 17 minutes and 10 seconds.

The Basque Country race comes ahead of that in Ibiza in May from Friday April 19, to Sunday April 21. The Vuelta a Ibiza Mountain Bike race is due to feature Spanish rider Joaquim Ro-

driguez who has notched some 45 wins throughout his professional career. It is also set to feature six-time Spanish champion Sandra Santanyes who is due to ride with husband Toni Pacios.

The race is made up of three stages. Riders begin in Ibiza City where they ride to Sant Antoni de Portmany over a distance of 72 kilometres.

Farmer’s Olympic efforts SPANISH runner and farmer Dani Mateo has achieved qualifying times for this year’s Doha World Cup and the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games after finishing ninth in the Rotterdam Marathon.

Mateo achieved a time of two hours, 10 minutes and 53 seconds at the marathon. The minimum qualifying time for the Doha World Cup is two hours 12 minutes and 15 seconds, and two hours 11 minutes and 30 seconds for the Olympics.

Mateo said training leading up to the marathon had been hard and that his legs hurt after gruelling road runs. He said he was also taking calls about issues arising on his family’s Soria farm.

“This week I received 50 calls.

They were mostly management issues. Thanks to my brother and other workers I can train and compete,” he said.
