By Tara Rippin AS the price tag for arson attacks on rubbish containers soars to almost half a million euros the search for those responsible has stepped up a gear. National and Local Police have revealed they are not looking for just one person, but believe there are separate copycat offenders setting fire to council property. The deliberate blazes - more than 100 in 16 months - are costing the tax payer heavily and taking firefighters and police officers away from other serious incidents. Investigators are now examining video footage from the most recent two fires which swept through eight large bin containers and gutted a car in just 10 minutes in Palma on Monday night. The fires were reported shortly before midnight on Monday. The first was at 11.45pm in Calle Bisbe Bernat Nadal,

Switched off RESIDENTS of Cala Pi were without street lighting for eight days. Calles Falla, in addition to Rossini, Chopin and Vivaldi, were most affected, with neighbours concerned about the ‘level of insecurity it caused.’ After complaints to Local Police, the service was re-established on Monday. One resident told Mallorcan press that they had tried to contact the town hall before going to the police.
Student accommodation gift
THE owner of a 14-storey building in the centre of Barcelona has donated it to Mallorca government for use as a residence for students from the island studying at the city’s university. According to Spanish press, the 20th century property is owned by Jordi Encina, whose mother originates from Mallorca and who has no offspring. Encina met with government leader, Miquel Ensenyet, this week to discuss how to proceed with the project, and to talk about the possibility of creating public administration offices in the basement.
Sources claim talks are still at a very early stage, but that it is seen as a ‘very good opportunity to help Mallorcan students who live in Barcelona and who encounter the same problem that occurs in Palma, where colleges’ residences have long waiting lists due to the high demand and private rentals are often unaffordable.’ Each year, just over 1,000 students from the University of the Balearic Islands request a transfer to other universities, in particular Barcelona. The rise in rental costs is also taking its toll on fami-
lies in the Balearic Islands. Reports show that some 3,570 families are currently on the waiting list for a rental apartment from the Balearic Housing Institute. This is a rise of 60 per cent since 2016. The surge in requests is due to ‘an unstoppable rise in rental prices,’ according to sources. And the problem is amplified by the fact the government does not have the housing to accommodate those in need with a total of 1,800 rental homes on its books. And only a tiny fraction of these are apparently unoccupied.

A MOTORCYCLIST was thrown against motorway railings and seriously injured after colliding with a van during the early hours of yesterday morning (Wednesday). The crash occurred on the Autopista de Ponent (Ma-1) at the Palmanova exit towards Palma. The injured rider was taken to Son Espases hospital with multiple injuries.
A QUICK thinking bus driver helped police arrest a pickpocket who stole a tourist’s wallet on a bus in Palma on Sunday. As the 50-year-old Algerian suspect ran off the bus, the driver kept an eye on his movements, enabling police to trace and detain the man.

Art in flames THIS sculpture of a Spanish Conquistador taking on an Aztec king comes from Valencia City’s Las Fallas festival which begins tomorrow (Friday). Las Fallas is held in Valencia City every March and coincides with celebrations for the San Jose saint’s day. The celebration climaxes with the burning of the sculptures in an act known as La Crema on Tuesday. Las Fallas has its origins in the Middle Ages when craftsmen and
artisans would burn spare wood to celebrate the Spring Equinox. They would also burn their parots, or candleholders, and as the tradition evolved they began decorating them with hats and clothes to make it look like a person. The build up to the modern festival began on March 1 with the Mascleta. The Mascleta is a gunpowder display which takes place every day in Valencia City’s Plaza de Ayuntamiento at 2pm until Tuesday. Bribery attempts A YOUNG man who attempted to bribe two National Police officers after being caught in possession of marihuana during a routine search of his car in Palma has been sentenced to two years in prison. The 23-year-old reportedly offered ‘a wad of notes’ totalling €420 in an attempt to stop officers arresting him or filing a report. The defendant was allegedly warned several times to stop offering the cash, but he is said to have
continued with his ‘cocky attitude.’ The young man then resisted arrest and became aggressive, injuring one of the officers as he fell to the ground. The prosecution initially asked for a sentence of four years and three months in prison, before an agreement was reached. The court ordered the defendant to pay fines totalling €1,800 and €1,200 compensation to the injured officer.

Whale fossil found THE fossilised skull of a whale believed to be 5.7 million years old has been discovered inside a block of stone weighing 750 kilos in Santanyi. It is reportedly the only known whale fossil found within a rock of identifiable origin from this particular period in the entire Mediterranean. A team of researchers from the Earth Sciences Research Group of the Department of Biology of the University of the Balearic Islands

(UIB), made the find at a quarry near the town of s’Horta, Felanitx. A spokesperson said that given the dimensions and main morphological features of the fossil, it is undoubtedly the skull of an aquatic mammal from the family Balaenopteridae (rorquals), the largest group of baleen whales. The preliminary results were presented at the recent First Palaeontological Virtual Congress as well as at the seventh Jornadas de Medio Ambiente de Baleares.

Roundabout fears THE town hall of Soller has lodged an official complaint with the Mallorca government about the Son Castello roundabout, arguing it is ‘very dangerous.’ There are huge concerns for the safety of motorists using the roundabout on the Ma-11 road where it converges with the Camí dels Reis. And the town hall is demanding a solution to avoid accidents. Months ago, the government allocated €127,000 for works to connect the Cami de Passatemps (which connects with Son Sardina) and the Soller road. As a result, entrance to the Son Castello roundabout from the Soller road is made from three different lanes, although the roundabout only has two. Mayor Jaume Severa said “it has become a very dangerous point” and warned that the government “will have to do something to correct it.”
Roadside blaze NOBODY was injured when a car burst into flames on a roundabout in Coll d’en Rabassa on Monday morning. Palma firefighters confirmed the driver of the vehicle quickly noticed there was a problem and stopped the car before calling emergency services. Crews tackled the flames at the side of the road.

A BOGUS landlady who conned a dozen tenants out of deposits for non-existent pr oper t i es i n Pal m a has been jailed for six months. The 40-year-old posted the houses and flats on the i nt er net and Pal m a’s Provincial Court heard she swi ndl ed €4,000 i n j ust over two months between early May and the beginning of July in 2017. The properties were alleged to be in Cala Major, Son Dameto, Calle Aragon, Paseo Mallorca and Paseo Maritimo de Palma. The defendant reportedly asked for deposits or an advance, but could not honour any agreements as she did not own any of the homes. The woman allegedly suffered from compulsive gambling at the time, and is bel i eved t o be banned f r om entering gambling halls in Mallorca. She admitted the offences and was found responsible for a continuing crime of fraud. The prosecutor's office had requested a sentence of t hr ee and a hal f year s i n prison and a fine of €1,620, but an agreement was made between parties involved. The defendant apologised for her actions and promised to pay the money back.
Shops searched MORE than 100,000 items of a pyr ot echni c nat ur e were seized during inspections at 30 Chinese shops in Mallorca last week. The Guardia Civil visited stores in Cala Millor, Campos, Can Picafort, Inca, Lloseta, Llucmajor, Palma and Porto Cristo. The goods were reportedl y on sal e wi t hout any control and available to minors. They included powerful rockets, firecrackers and flares that infringed consumer regulations in terms of l abel l i ng, r egi st er ed marks and quality control. Simulated weapons were also found. Nine people have been arrested.

COMMUNITY: Volunteers join major clear up initiative.
Beach clean-up in Palma MORE than 150 volunteers collected almost 60 kilos of rubbish from Ciutat Jardi beach in Palma on Sunday. A spokesperson from Asociacion Ondine, which set up the clear up operation, said: “Every month we organise a beach clean somewhere around Mallorca. “ We w o u l d l i k e t o thank all the volunteers who joined us on Sunday, the Danish school Roskilde Katedralskole for their participation and donation to our work, Don Dobbin and Frimpfria Zoner for their collaboration in collecting cigarette butts, and last but not least, El Peñon for inviting the Ondine team for lunch. “Stay tuned (to the Facebook page) if you want to join our coming
beach cleans, as we will soon be publishing more information about the next one.” The association’s beach clean-up programme is not confined to collecting rubbish. It is also about raising awareness about the scale of the problem caused by plastics which are discarded and then end up in the sea. Following the collection, the plastic items are classified according to how they need to be treated in accordance with Ondine principles of reuse and recycling where possible. Death probe arrest NATIONAL POLICE officers have arrested a 33-year-old Scottish man at Alicante-Elche airport whom they believe is responsible for the death of a fellow Scot, of the same age, following a fight in Benidorm’s renowned ‘zona guiri.’ The fight took place in the early hours of Friday morning, with the incident being caught on camera and thus leading to the identification of the suspect and his subsequent arrest. The Scottish holidaymaker was detained on Sunday morning inside the terminal of Alicante-Elche airport, where he was waiting to board his flight back home. On the night of the fight, the victim was seen to be walking along Calle Gerona in Benidorm alone. On crossing paths with his fellow Scot, who was with his wife, it seems that a few words were exchanged, which then led to a full-blown physical fight be-

Two passers-by had been trying to revive him, but it was too late. It isn’t completely clear what exactly caused the Scot’s death as the preliminary autopsy has ruled out that it was the
result of an accidental or intentional blow to the head. For this reason, a toxicology analysis is being carried out to ascertain whether his death was perhaps drugs related. The tourist had been visiting
Benidorm with some friends to celebrate a stag do and it was the group’s first night there. This is the second serious incident involving British holidaymakers in the ‘zona guiri’ area in the last two weeks.
The big cheese A BLOCK of cheese made in the Canary Islands has been declared the largest in Spain after weighing in at 174 kilograms. The cheese, produced by Quesos Bolaños in Gran Canaria, took around 1,200 litres of milk to make. It was made following an order from a company in the Valencia Region. The block of cheese is due to be sold off in portions from November after it has matured.
Compensation call LAWYERS from across Spain are demanding changes to the amount of compensation paid out following traffic accidents. Professionals from more than 130 law firms said money paid out to victims had decreased by 40 per cent in the three years since changes to laws around civil liability.

Oil imports ALMOST 5.9 million tons of oil was imported into Spain in January, 9.4 per cent less then the same month in 2018 according to data from the Corporation of Strategic Reserves of Petroleum Products.
New record THERE were 3,321 bone marrow transplants undertaken in Spain in 2017, up from 3,216 the previous year and a new record according to data from the National Transplant Organisation.

‘Millions’ rally on Women’s Day HUNDREDS of thousands of protesters demonstrated in towns and cities across Spain and millions more went on strike on Friday to call for gender equality on International Women’s Day. Trade union estimates placed the number of those taking part in the general strike called to coincide with the day at between five and six million. Around 5.3 million took part in 2018, with protests and events held in around 1,500 locations across the country. The Madrid branch of the 8M Commission which helped to co-ordinate the protests and strikes said they were very happy with the turnout. “We had to repeat the strike because there are more than 1,000 reasons to keep protesting,” a spokesperson for the group said. “We exceeded expectations this year, which was difficult because of last year’s turnout,” the spokesperson added.

Between 350,000 and 375,000 people are estimated to have demonstrated in Madrid, according to local authority figures. That is almost double the roughly 170,000 who took part in 2018. Valencian authorities estimated that around 220,000 took part in protests in the region’s capital on Friday. Barcelona’s Guardia Urbana estimated that around 200,000 turned out there. Estimates on the amount of people protesting in Sevilla range from 50,000 to 130,000. A manifesto read at the protests stated activists were fighting against policies made with ‘contempt’ for women. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said protesters had once again ‘made history’ with the demonstrations. The 8M Commission spokesperson said the fight would continue for gender equality because feminism is an ‘unstoppable force.’

11M: Remembering Spain’s worst terrorist atrocity ON Monday Spain remembered the worst terrorist atrocity to hit the country. On March 11, 2004, at 7.39am three bombs ripped through a train arriving at Madrid’s Atocha station. Seven more blasts soon followed on other trains. The grim toll was to reach 192 dead and more than 1,800 injured. The last victim to pass away was in 2014, after remaining in a coma for 10 years. Thirty-four people perished in the train which exploded in the Atocha station; 63 in the one that exploded in front of Calle Tellez; 65 on a train at El Pozo station; 14 in the one at Santa Eugenia station and 16 in different hospitals. Emergency services and the people of Spain rallied together - initially to offer immediate help and later to show solidarity for the victims in marches attended by thousands. The attack by Al Qaeda terrorists also had far-reaching consequences on the political landscape in Spain. Just three days after the attack The PP (conservative) government of José María Aznar unexpectedly fell in a general election. Within hours of the attack, and with no evidence, Aznar ’s government blamed Basque separatists ETA. This was

MADRID: It has been 15 years since the atrocity. viewed by many as either a cynical election ploy and the Spanish people reacted by voting in the socialist PSOE led by José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, who held power until 2011. According to an investigation, the Al Qaeda affiliated Moroccan Islamic Combatant Group (GICM) was responsible for the
attack, and the bombs were prepared on a farm in Chinchón (Madrid). On April 3 the police found seven of the terrorists in a flat in the Madrid town of Leganes. Surrounded by anti-terror police, the cell committed suicide with a strong explosion that also killed Deputy Inspector Francisco Javier Torronteras, bringing the number of victims to 193. On February 15, 2007 a trial began in Madrid. The court concluded that 22 men participated in the attacks: the seven who committed suicide in a flat in Leganés and 14 other defendants and one unidentified person. The court decided that the Leganés’ seven, along with Jamal Zougam, arrested two days later, and Otman Gnaoui, arrested on March 30, placed 13 backpacks loaded with explosives (three did not detonate). Zougam and El Gnaoui were sentenced to 42,922 and 42,924 years in prison respectively (under Spanish law they will serve a maximum of 40 years). The rest of those found guilty were jailed for up to 15 years. Of the victims, 89 still suffer from injuries which have left them totally disabled or with a degree of physical incapacity that makes them unable to work.

Passport call HOLDERS of British passports due to expire in 15 months or less could be barred from some countries under a nodeal Brexit, a consumer group has claimed. Which? said passports with 15 months or less on them may fail to comply with the rules for entry to countries in the Schengen area, including Spain. Rory Boland, the editor of the Which? travel magazine, said millions of people could face disruptions to travel plans or be prevented from boarding planes. “Anyone who thinks they might be affected should look to renew their passport today or if you already have travel plans in the near future, consider using the fasttrack passport service,” Boland said. It comes as the British government recently launched an online passport checker which allows holders to see if they need to renew their documents. A Home Office spokesperson said new rules would apply to British travellers if Britain leaves the EU without a deal. “If your passport does not meet the new rules, you should apply for a new p a s s p o r t b e f o r e t r a v e l l i n g t o a ff e c t e d countries,” the spokesperson said.
Plan details By Joe Gerrard AN international law firm that works with British expatriates in Spain has released an outline about new measures passed by Madrid to secure residency rights in a no-deal Brexit. Pellicer & Heredia published an outline of the measures in the new Royal Decree-Law passed on Friday March 1. They have also produced an information video in collaboration with the Brexpats in Spain group’s Vice President Richard Hill. The law acts as a contingency plan in case Britain leaves the EU without a deal on Friday March 29. It is subject to London agreeing similar measures for Spanish citizens living in Britain. The law firm said the DecreeLaw requires all British nationals and their families to apply for a Foreigner Residence Card (Tarjeta de Identidad Exteranjero, TIE) before December 31 2020. This is because British nationals will be regarded as from a ‘third’ country, or one out-

Tax Agency VAT plans THE director general of Spain’s Tax Agency said officials are mulling a points-based VAT (IVA) system to certify compliant companies and allow them to avoid the rate on overseas purchases. Jesus Gascon said the criteria for the proposed system would include adherence to a code of good practice, transparency and making VAT payments without incident. He was speaking at the Thompson Reuters Foundation’s Tax Compliance Congress. Gascon said the deductions on overseas purchases would allow companies to pass savings onto consumers.

Business concerns TAXATION, the general economic outlook, regulations and demand were among the factors which negatively impacted Spanish businesses in 2018, according to a National Institute of Statistics (INE) survey of companies. The INE’s poll found that taxation was the leading concern, with 25.3 per cent of firms saying it was the factor which had the biggest negative impact on companies. Economic conditions during 2018 came second. It was cited as the leading negative factor by 24 per cent of companies. Taxation was of particular concern to

It was also listed as the chief concern among small firms employing 10 workers or less. It was followed by regulations with 22.7 per cent, defaults with 21.5 per cent and the level of demand for goods and services at 21.2 per cent. Other factors cited by businesses were legal costs, input costs, the availability of capital, human resources and the labour market.
Infrastructure and a lack of equipment came last. They were cited by 8.6 per cent and 7.2 per cent respectively. A total of 51.1 per cent of the companies surveyed said demand for their products was the most important factor to drive their growth. It was followed by economic conditions at 36.4 per cent, and regulations at 33.2 per cent. The impact of court costs, a lack of equipment and infrastructure were considered the least important factors for increasing companies’ growth capacity. The INE polled businesses from all sectors of the Spanish economy over a two-week period for the survey.
A TOTAL of 16 Spanish companies have signed up to a new code which pledges them to improve access to senior management roles for female employees. The firms have joined the Spanish Association of Executives and Directors’s (EJE & CON) Code of Good Practices for the Management of Talent and Improvement of Competitiveness. But Britain’s withdrawal from the EU could give Spain the chance to move into other mar-

The report stated: “The achievement of an egalitarian culture is not only an ethical imperative, but a business priority.” The study found that Spanish companies who promote equality and diversity can increase their creative capacities to seven times higher than firms which do not.

SPAIN’S prime minister has vowed to tackle what he claimed was worsening wages and working conditions in companies in the socalled ‘gig economy’ if he wins the upcoming general election. Pedro Sanchez said he would introduce regulations on firms including Uber, Cabify, Deliveroo and Glovo if his ruling left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) takes power following Sunday April 28’s vote. He was speaking to Labour Ministry and trade union officials. “It is crucial to extend labour regulations and social protection to new forms of business. These businesses cannot be allowed to degrade wages and conditions under the false appearance of modernity,” Sanchez said. It comes as several court rulings, including one in favour of Telepizza delivery drivers, have set precedents on how labour law will apply to such firms. The gig economy refers to companies which employ workers as freelancers, which usually means lower wages and little-to-no social benefits.

Experiences push SPANISH department store chain El Corte Ingles has drawn up plans to put gyms, beauty centres and spas in its outlets to tackle rising competition from online retailers. Senior company figures said they were aiming to offer more experiences to customers to differentiate the firm from sites such as Amazon. It comes as an agreement reached in December with La Liga to feature football experience spaces in its stores has already drawn more than 87,000 extra visitors, company figures showed. THE European Central Bank (ECB) has slashed its growth forecast for the eurozone for this year to 1.1 per cent from 1.7 per cent due to weak manufacturing performance and a fall in overseas demand, president Mario Draghi said.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT AFTER watching the recent documentary on Michael Jackson, I truly do wish he were still alive. Were his present-day accusers able to confront him in a court of law and give the sort of evidence we saw on the recent documentary Leaving Neverland, then Jackson would most definitely have spent the rest of his miserable life behind bars. Before all the diehard fans (whose bruised egos will NEVER let them admit that their chosen idol could commit such atrocities) begin screaming their hysterical dissent; consider this: what would your opinion be if you’d just heard that creepy, 50-year-old ‘Fred Smith,’ who lives in the next street, had admitted to sleeping with children, some as young as seven, over the past 20 years or more? You’d be calling for the removal of his head and testicles, that’s what. And you would be 100 per cent correct. Why then should you blindly accept these actions as the ‘norm’ from another individual, merely because he is a talented personality who can dance and sing? Michael Jackson followed all the traits of the classic paedophile. Pick your victim. Ingratiate yourself with the family (à la Rolf Harris) and then slowly but surely earn their trust and friendship. When you have accomplished this, very carefully begin to separate the victim from the jurisdiction of their parents. against such a devious adversary - a family friend who their parent trusted and loved? My heart went out to these two haunted and utterly screwed up young men. Desperately trying to get their lives back together and create normal relationships. Trying to dispel the guilt that their abnormal relations with Jackson could possibly have been their own fault.
Admitting that they loved him, and still did. Confessing to their families, fully aware that in doing so they would destroy their parents in the knowledge that they had been duped into making catastrophic mistakes in their children’s upbringing. Ah, I hear from those who are still not convinced. What about all the other children who swore he never touched them, even though they too shared his bed? Well of course he didn’t, that was his devious ploy. He had already groomed his chosen sex objects. The other children were ‘beards.’ Especially actor Macaulay Culkin. What better high-profile vindicator could you have than this young, attractive and popular film star, swearing you never laid a hand on him? And just how do all you doubters think this obviously highly sexed individual was getting his rocks off over all those years? Celibacy? Ha! I hope these two young men get a fortune from Jackson’s estate. At least it’ll keep it out of the hands of his money grabbing family and lawyers. Ad blockers? You may break the internet, warns Terence Kennedy THE internet - like magazines - is essentially a device to get us to read advertising. Or so marketers thought until a few years ago. Then an unforeseen thing happened; ad blockers. They started small on computers in the mid-90’s, then grew, and grew. Exasperated by a profusion of pop-ups, flashing banner ads, superimposed videos, in-your-face messages and seriously unsubtle selling, some 30 per cent of internet users now employ ad-blockers on their devices, rising to more than 40 per cent among the young. Smartphone ad blocking has more than doubled in just four years. Granted, many online marketers brought it on themselves, pushing their ads ever harder, higher, and louder, swamping our screens until finally we cried ‘Enough!’ The people have spoken, hallelujah; but in doing so, might we ultimately ‘break’ the internet we now take so much for granted? The one where we now expect content and
information to be largely free for the taking? It’s obviously not from the goodness of their hearts or social philanthropy, that the corporate world spends gazillions on websites and all the gubbins it takes to get them onto our screens. They need to sell us stuff, and if they can’t, something’s got to give. But spoiled by years of ‘free,’ users are showing a stubborn reluctance to pay. Those brave souls (notably news sites) who have
moved their content behind socalled ‘paywalls’ have taken a massive hit, and for many that’s just not sustainable. Even the world’s most ad-driven techno giant Google was forced to capitulate; for the past year or so its Chrome browser - the world’s most popular - has had an ad blocker built in, with others following suit. Lest we think of the early ad blocking pioneers as online knights in shining armour, their business
models have not been squeakyclean. Many pressed companies to pay them to ‘whitelist’ their sites by default, in a modern take on the venerable protection racket. Those of us who do block ads either actively through an independent ad blocker, or passively because it comes built in with our browser, now regularly face pleas from sites we visit to ‘unblock’ their ads if we want to continue. Some folks will take the time and trouble, some won’t know how, and some will simply back out and move on. It’s hard to see this ending well without a radical rethink on both sides, and a technical arms race between advertisers and ad blockers. Bill Gates predicted early on that the internet represented the future of advertising. But marketing Guru Maurice Saatchi worried that advertising could actually be killed by the internet. Power to the people: for once it’s actually our call.
IF you do decide to ad-block, current browsers like Chrome or Opera enable it automatically, by default. Others like Firefox need optional add-ons. Ad blockers are generally free ‘extensions’ for browsers. The most popular include AdBlock Plus, AdBlock (no relation), AdBlocker Ultimate, uBlock Origin and 1Blocker. But blocking simply everything is really not a good way to go. Blockers let you ‘whitelist’ sites you favour, usually through an icon in the browser address bar which can simply be clicked and it’s done. The crazy has its roots in history LAURA PENN ‘PENN TO PAPER’ EVERY year the large Valencian community on the island celebrate Las Fallas with a traditional procession in El Toro. It is a celebration and a homage to the much bigger fortnight event that happens this time of year in Valencia which is held in commemoration of Saint Joseph. Basically, it is a giant street party with fireworks and bonfires happening any time of the day or night. The residents of Valencia (and El Toro) spend 12 months building elaborate ‘ninots’ (Valencian for puppets or dolls) out of wood, cardboard and papier-mâché. Traditionally they characterised religious figures, but over the years this has changed to include effigies of politicians and celebrities and the identity of the figures is a closely guarded secret. the city (or high street in the case of El Toro) - and then set on fire! Yes, the work of 52 weeks goes up in flames in five minutes. Seem like madness but, as with so many festivities in Spain, the crazy has its roots in history. The origin of the festivities goes back to the old traditions of the local carpenters, who burnt their old rubbish along with the wooden devices they used to hoist the candles which lit their workshops during the winter months, on the feast day of their patron saint, Saint Joseph. People would pile wood in the streets of Valencia and set fire to it as it would not be needed in the hot summer months. Some bright spark (pardon the pun) had the idea of shaping the wood into a figure and the rest, as they say, is history. Even the much smaller event in El Toro is a noisy affair with firecrackers going off everywhere. My favourite part is the parade where local ladies (like the one in the photo with me) wear traditional dress. This year’s Las Fallas will be held in El Toro on the weekend of April 5, 6 and 7 -
I hope to see you there! This week the A-Z of Mallorca reaches the letter ‘J’ for JAIME (KING) Known as James I The Conqueror (Jaime el Conquistador) he lived from February 1208 until July 27, 1276. He was King of Aragon, Count of Barcelona and Lord of Montpellier. He became King of Mallorca in 1231 after he captured the island from the moors. He landed in what is now Santa Ponsa having blown off course, he was meant to land in Pollensa. With a conquering force of 11,000 men and 300 horses he landed on Mallorca in September 1229 and by the end of that year most of the island had capitulated, although it took three years to complete the job, with stubborn pockets of resistance in the centre of the island. His son, James II, started the building of the cathedral in Palma and built Belver Castle. You can see a statue of Jaime I in Placa d’Espana in Palma. The global distribution of sport By David Worboys FOOTBALL and tennis are as close to being global sports as any. There have been top tennis players from all over the world and from numerous different countries. The singles matches generate the most interest and the greatest prize money, which makes it primarily an individual sport. Of the team sports, cricket is confined to English-speaking nations, while rugby’s strongholds are in Europe, Oceania, South Africa and Argentina. For cultural reasons, women’s gymnastics has limited appeal in Saudi Arabia, while the climate precludes Trinidad as a venue for downhill skiing. Baseball is primarily of interest in North America and Japan, whereas basketball is popular in North America and Australia. None of these sports has a global
popularity comparable to football. Although competitive football is played by so many countries however, the highest level of success has been achieved in only two regions of the world. The 21 World Cups to date have been won exclusively by Western Europe (12 times) and South America (9). The ‘tie-break’ was finally broken as the Europeans went two points clear (11-9) in 2014. Until then neither region had led the race by more than one point. Moreover, only three ‘outsiders’ have even reached the World Cup Final, all from East-
ern Europe. Is it a coincidence, then, that probably the eight greatest ever footballers are also from these two parts of the world? South America gave us Di Stefano, Pele, Maradona, Ronaldo and (currently) Messi; all from Argentina and Brazil. From Western Europe we had Cruyff, Zidane and (again currently) Cristiano Ronaldo; none from Italy, Spain or Germany. If there is an ‘outsider,’ it is possibly Puskas; also from Eastern Europe. As the World Cup has been hosted in many countries not
known as football nations (such as South Africa, the USA and Japan), it has been anticipated for many years that an Eastern European, African, Central American or even an Asian country might one day prevail. The likes of Croatia, Senegal, Mexico and South Korea, however, continue waiting as the duopoly continues to this day. In the 50’s, the great Hungarian team lost only one match in seven years. This was the 1954 World Cup Final when they lost to West Germany, whom they had - a few weeks earlier - beaten 8-3 in a group match. Only one of the eight World Cup winners (three from South America, five from Western Europe) has failed to reach a final ‘away from home.’ This is England. The Netherlands, on the other hand, have reached three finals, but were never winners.

“MICHAEL JACKSON changed the world and more personally my life forever. He’s the reason I dance, make music and one of the reasons I believe in the pure goodness of humankind.” These are the words of Wade Robson in 2009. Just a few of the many words of positivity spoken by Robson about his friend MJ. Robson now seems to have changed his mind and is one of the two accusers in the documentary Leaving Neverland. I have no idea if MJ is guilty or not. What I do know however is that MJ has been dead for 10 years and is not here to defend himself. His two accusers had 25 years to bring their allegations. The FBI investigated MJ for years and found nothing. Yes his behaviour was weird, and holding sleepover parties with kids was probably not the best idea. What motivated parents to send their kids to Neverland? What I don’t get is all the comments on social media from people who know nothing

THE KING OF POP: The trials are continuing even after his death. who are treating him as guilty. I have no idea and that is why I won’t pass judgement on probably the biggest pop star the world has seen.
I HAVE an app on my phone which allows me to check my phone bill; usage of data etc. It was in Spanish, all I had to do was click on the app and all my info is there, but yesterday it asked me for my password and then wouldn’t let me in. I tried it half a dozen times but it wouldn’t allow me access? Why? Because it needs updating and I can’t update it because it’s Spanish. I have an iPhone and my account is in the UK store. I went to the UK site and they don’t have that app in their store, so I tried to change to the Spanish app store and it wouldn’t let me. Now, this must have changed because how did I get it on there in the first place? So, I called the helpline and tried to find out if they could help, being a helpline and all. After all the BS pleasantries we got on to the question in hand. To cut to the chase, yes, I can change my stores except no, I can’t. Why? Because I have a credit balance, so the helpline sug-
gested I spent my balance then changed stores, downloaded the update then changed it back. Simple things can be so complicated sometimes. Controversial subject, I know, but honestly is it fair that if you are a 6ft 3in, 200pound transgender female, you should be able to compete in female-only sporting events? The reason I put the question like that, is because I don’t see any petite, dainty, transgender women competing. Again, I must emphasise, I am not transphobic or any other phobic, but you must be allowed to ask a question or have an opinion. Women and those running all-female competitions and sporting events need to ask themselves whether they are willing to allow other female competitors to be marginalised and prevented from fully succeeding and competing on an equal footing with other females; all in support of a social justice agenda. Many, many famous sports people - male and female - are asking the same question.

I JUST read your article concerning the killing of cats. The same thing happened with five of my cats some time ago. I went to the vet and told them after I was sure they were poisoned and they advised me to go to the council and ask for Seprona, which is the animal safety dept (of the Guardia Cicil). They advised me if it happened again to leave the cat where it is, do not move it. They will then come with a sniffer dog which is capable of sniffing out where the poison came from. With me it never happened again so I did not use it but perhaps this is a possibility to find out who is responsible for this. Hope you succeed with this, it is so painful. Health care concerns READING the March 10 Sunday Telegraph, the UK government placed an advert saying that after March 29 UK nationals should buy travel insurance when visiting Europe as, presumably, the EHIC will no longer apply. I am a Spanish resident (with Spanish Health card) and my concern is what is the situation if I now travel to Germany, France or Italy or indeed UK? Should I now buy travel insurance? Graham Mills Editor’s note: While no-one knows exactly what will happen after Brexit, UK nationals resident and working in Spain and paying into the Spanish Social Security system should be able to access health care throughout the EU via the EHIC. At the moment it is not known how UK pensioners resident in Spain will be affected. The UK Embassy says bi-lateral talks to resolve issues such as these are well under way.

Standing up for their rights! I HAVE to say, having witnessed the ‘strikes’ and marches to mark last Friday’s International Women’s Day that the Spanish have really taken it to their hearts! All the major cities were heaving with women protesting against gender violence and inequality, as well as just coming together in solidarity. It is such a shame that women need to do this - but given the high levels of gender violence in Spain and the numbers of women killed at the hands of their partners, I am proud that women have decided to make a stand. I recently booked an ‘economy’ hire car for a long weekend, pick up Friday, return on Monday, so four days. For this I paid the grand total of £9 for a very nice Skoda Fabia. Yes, nine pounds. LAST Friday saw hundreds of thousands of women protest in towns and cities across Spain on International Women’s Day, showing that the backlash against a male-dominated society continues unabated. A general strike called on women both in the workplace and in the home to down tools. ‘If we stop, the world stops,’ was their motto. The eyes of Spain and the world were certainly on those striking against ongoing gender inequality, including on pay gaps and the representation of women in senior business roles. Women are paid 22.8 per cent less than men on average for doing the same work when tax credits are taken into account, according to the Fedea economic research institute. Data from companies shows 18 per cent of board directors are female. Researchers from Pompeu Fabra University also found that while 10.4 per cent of men who apply for a job get an interview, only 7.7 per cent of women do. But women sought to address more than inequality in the workplace. Protesters were demanding that Spain confronts a toxic ‘maschismo’ masculinity that has seen three women killed since International Women’s Day. A total of 47 women died in proven or alleged gender violence-related attacks in 2018. The backlash against this is not only emerging on the streets. A play about the La Manada (Wolfpack) sex assault case shows these issues are now entering mainstream debates and culture. They will stay there until equality is achieved.

‘POLITICIANS come and go but governments go on forever’ Astonishingly, I agree with most of Leapy’s article on this occasion. I am looking just now at a graph in a BBC news item showing the percentages of English local authority schools in deficit in recent years. In 2018 it was 30.3 per cent. This is because English schools are being so underfunded by the Tory government that nearly a third of them
are now in deficit. Spending per pupil has fallen by 8 per cent in real terms since 2010 while hard pressed parents are being asked by head teachers to provide money for school books and even for roof repairs! Now here’s the thing, Tory politicians actually think it suits their purposes to keep the masses less well educated than they should be. After all if you are a well educated privately schooled Tory government minister, this makes it easier to pull the wool over the eyes of your electorate. Or so the thinking goes. So Tories always cut state education funds. Always. Where their thought processes fall down though, is that many of the problems facing our society today are partly caused by that poorer education. There are many other factors at work of course, but poor education is one of the largest contributory factors towards the ever increasing wealth gap between rich and poor. This leads to widespread unrest in our society. It feeds criminality. It feeds knife crime. It feeds uneducated hate crime. Fortunately for me, I come from Scotland where things are a bit different. Knife crime there, for example, is going down while it is soaring upwards in England. This is partly because Tory cuts in education and social services are partly offset by additional funding from the Scottish government. Scotland’s more caring approach is paying off. Unfortunately the English don’t have that option - not as long as the Tories are in power. And I don’t fancy their chances with the current Labour party either! Leapy’s right this time. Politicians and the wealthy ruling classes have us in their grip, and there is nothing we can do about it. Austerity sucks. Brian

Prices increase moderately in February WHILE reports on property prices have shown positive results for quite some time, with house prices rising considerably each month - more so in some places than others - the latest study from the Tinsa IMIE General Index has shown that while prices are still going up, the rate at which they do so has slowed down slightly. Annually Figures for last month (February) have revealed that property prices as a whole, including both new builds and resales,

However, this inter-annual increase of 4.1 per cent is 2.7 per cent lower than the annual increase in house prices recorded in January. Property prices went up the
most in Spain’s big cities and metropolitan areas, at 7.2 per cent and 4 per cent respectively. In other areas of the country, the increase in prices was much less noticeable.
In concrete, property prices on the Mediterranean Coast went up 2.9 per cent in the last year, while the Balearic and Canary Islands only registered an annual rise of 0.3 per cent.
Landlords beware Changes in rental law have just come into force again WITH the government trying to rush as many urgent measures through as possible before the elections, one of the most controversial is the new rental law, which was approved on March 1 and came into force on March 6. It still has to be ratified by Congress and there is even a strong likelihood it will be repealed - for a second time - by them. The new rental law is more or less a reworking of the law which was brought out in December last year, which was subsequently repealed after little over a month. The law aims to bring greater stability into the rental market, which is slightly ironic given the number of times this law has been approved and then thrown out! However, because of spiralling rental prices and a decrease in properties available for long lets, the law has been put in place to give long-term tenants more rights. However, all those entering a rental contract agreement from now until the law possibly changes again should tread carefully. This is especially the case for landlords, who, if they are not aware of the recent law changes, could find themselves entangled in a contract lasting much longer than they expected. The new regulations affect
long-term rentals more specifically and it must be noted that short-term lets and holiday rentals are treated differently and fall under tourism legislation seeing as they are regarded an economic activity in this sector. Any long-term rental contracts which were signed before March 6, 2019 will adhere to the law in place at the time of signing and do not have to follow the new regulations outlined below. • The mandatory renewal of a rental contract returns to five years again, after being reduced to three. This means the contract will be automatically renewed each year for up to five years. Only the tenant can cancel this agreement by giving at least two months’ notice. • For legal landlords, contracts of five or seven years will undergo an automatic further renewal period of three years, instead of one, if neither party expresses a wish to cancel the contract. • The landlord can only claim the property back after one year of contract and must give four months’ notice. If this is not carried out, the landlord cannot use the excuse of needing the property for family members unless it is worded into the contract. • The normal deposit is the equivalent to a month’s rent but
can be a maximum of two month’s rent. No more than this is allowed unless the initial rental contract is for a period longer than five or seven years. • Rental prices will be brought in line with inflation and revisions can only take place if agreed in the contract. • If the property is sold with a tenant, the new buyer must respect the whole duration of the rental contract, even if the contract is not registered with the property registry office. • If the tenant dies and his family are in a vulnerable posi-
tion, they can take over the rental agreement for the full duration of the contract. • The tenant’s tax or ITP tax has been eliminated. • Those in a socially vulnerable position cannot be evicted for non-payment of rent until Social Services have found them alternative accommodation. If an eviction order has been issued, this can be put on hold for up to two months. • If the landlord is a business or legal entity, he must pay the administration and legal fees to draw up the contract.
Monthly With regards to the difference in property prices from January this year to February, only the capital and big cities saw their prices go up, and only by 0.1 per cent at that. House prices on the Mediterranean coast and in inland areas actually saw prices drop by as much as 4 per cent in the last month. Recovery Since house prices were at their lowest, they have recovered some 13 per cent on average across the country. As can
be expected, property prices have recovered the most in Madrid and other large cities, at 23 per cent. Recuperation has also been strong in the Balearic and Canary Islands, where prices have clawed back 18 per cent from their lowest values. On the Mediterranean coast, the recovery has been in line with the national average, at 13.6 per cent and in metropolitan areas the figure is 12 per cent. In other areas, however, the value of property has not seen such an increase.

Barry Duke THERE’S an interesting Internet resource called Numbeo, which allows one to make a variety of comparisons between world cities. One can check out the differences in, for example, costs of living, property prices, quality of life and the like. I homed in on crime, and compared Spain’s capital with the UK’s; and was far from surprised to learn that Madrid is by far the safer city. It has a safety scale of 67.38 as opposed to London’s 48.08. Madrid’s crime index stands at 32.68, while London’s is 51.92. What prompted me to research crime statistics was the wide coverage given mainly in UK tabloids to a recent incident in Benidorm in which two doormen were stabbed - thankfully not fatally - at the Beachcomber bar. Two young Brits were arrested in connection with the attack. After I expressed my fury on Facebook, saying: ‘Brits bringing their knife crime culture to my home town. Disgusting!’ Someone I know well Andy Mansell - promptly berated me, saying ‘The UK tabloids are engaging in an awful lot of unwarranted ‘Benidorm bashing’ at the moment and

coverage, by and large the tabloids appear to be playing down a dramatic increase of racist and xenophobic attacks which have occurred in the UK since Brexit. Of course, not all publications are guilty. As far back as July 2017, the Independent wrote: ‘Hate crimes involving racial and religious discrimination
have soared at an unprecedented rate since the Brexit vote, prompting warnings that minority groups feel more vulnerable than ever. ‘Police figures show incidents surged by 23 per cent in the 11 months after the EU referendum, compared with the same period the previous year, marking an unparalleled rise.’
Since then, it’s gotten a whole lot worse, but it’s being left mainly to social media to reveal the extent of the disgusting treatment many people are having to endure. Take the case of Shin Yalog, a British-born Indian who has chosen to leave the UK. He recently posted a picture of himself on Facebook holding his new Indian residency. He said he was sick to the back teeth of being told to ‘f*** off home Paki’ since the Brexit vote. ‘So, I’m now super proud to say I have been granted Indian residency. Or to put it in language the Brexit racists understand; this ‘Paki’ is “f***ing off.’ Rather than manufacture horror stories about foreign resorts such as Benidorm, the tabloids should instead be picking up on cases like this, and make clear to their readers that what they most need to fear is the fanaticism, prejudice and intolerance which has taken root like Japanese knotweed on their very own turf. But this they won’t do, because they are the ones who have done the most to poison public attitudes towards people they’ve cruelly chosen to caricature as interlopers. If Hitler were alive today, he’d be rubbing his hands with glee.

ROAD TEST by Nick Fletcher WITH diesel cars declining in popularity, many people are considering switching to hybrid models, and though the choice is limited in the family hatchback sector, there are some stand-out models including the Lexus CT200h. Lexus has a well-established presence in the hybrid sector, and the CT200h is aimed at those who want hybrid performance from a practical family hatchback which also has premium cachet, and the Lexus brand certainly has that. CT200h prices start at €29,216 (£25,150), and it was this entry-level model which I tested. All versions use the same engine, a 1.8litre 98hp petrol unit boosted by an electric motor and mated to a standard CVT auto gearbox. Performance is fairly typical of class standards; 0-100kph in 10.3 seconds, top speed 180kph (112mph). Emissions are low at 101g/km and average fuel economy is 22.7kpl (64.2mpg). And being a full

However, defender Gerard Pique equalised before half time, and Barca went on to notch up two more with a penalty from Lionel Messi and a strike from Luis Suarez. MotoGP opening drama THE opening MotoGP of the season in Qatar on Sunday saw Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso clinch a last bend victory after a record-breaking and controversial race. Firing past the Repsol Honda of world champion Marc Marquez on the home straight, Dovizioso took the flag 0.023 seconds ahead of his rival. Britain’s Cal Crutchlow finished a close third, just 0.32 seconds adrift. The top 15 riders were separated by just over 15 seconds, a premier class record, and the top five by only 0.6 seconds. But Dovizioso’s win was not without controversy, after Honda, Suzuki, Aprilia and KTM lodged a protest over a new aerodynamic wing on the Ducati’s rear suspension. The protest was rejected, though an appeal was later lodged.
