Brexit backing

By Joe Gerrard BRITAIN’S Prime Minister is seeking changes to her and the EU’s draft Brexit deal after Parliament backed her in votes on Tuesday while Brussels said renegotiations were not an option.

Theresa May told MPs the government would “redouble” its efforts to extract further concessions from the EU on the Northern Irish backstop.

The House of Commons backed her but called for a no-deal scenario to be taken off the table and for the backstop to be replaced.

Changing the agreement would not be easy because of Brussels’ “limited appetite” for renegotiation, May said. She has until February 14, the day until the next vote on her deal in Parliament, to secure changes.

May said: “This House has made clear what it needs to approve a withdrawal agreement.”

Flight fright in Palma PASSENGERS endured a hair-raising landing during a flight from Valencia to Palma when the plane left the runway and crashed into a beacon light during high winds.

As the Air Europa pilot was landing at Son Sant Joan on Monday, the aircraft went off course, rolling at speed before crashing into the structure, leaving a huge hole in the fuselage.

Fire engines immediately surrounded the plane, with those on board reportedly terrified but unhurt.

One passenger, Hugo Rodriquez, told Spanish press that ‘people were screaming and nobody knew what was happening.’

The 15-metre long mammal showed signs of severe weight loss and severe external wounds.

Luis Parpal, leading the team of professionals carrying out a postmortem, told Spanish press that early indications suggest an infection, ‘toxicological or biological, had weakened the specimen, leaving it adrift.’

WILD: Doñana National Park is home to more than 100 bird species.

Natural beauty THIS picture of a flamingo taking flight was shot in southwest Spain’s Doñana National Park which will be in the spotlight on Saturday when the world marks World Wetlands Day. The National Park lies in the Andalucian province of Huelva and also crosses into Cadiz and Sevilla. It covers an area of 543 square kilometres, 135 of which are protected.

Doñana is in the Guadalquivir River delta which flows into the Atlantic Ocean, creating its many marshes

and wetlands. Its level of biodiversity is one of a kind in Europe. The National Park is home to a myriad of animal species including fallow deer, Spanish red deer, wild boars, European badgers and the endangered Iberian lynx.

There are also several bird species that live or migrate there from Africa, including flamingos, mallards, Egyptian vultures and the endangered Spanish imperial eagle.

Doñana was established as a nature

reserve in 1969 when the Spanish government and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) bought parts of its marshland. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.

The National Park attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. But it has also come under threat from farming and irrigation.

A holding dam at the Los Frailes mine burst and released acidic water into the Guadalquivir in 1998. It cost an estimated €240 million to clean up.

On hold SANT LLORENC Council has provisionally suspended the issuing of planning licences in areas affected by the floods in October.

It has commissioned architects, en g i n e e r s a n d g eo g ra phers to draw up an urban plan in relation to buildings and infrastructure to reduce the likelihood of future flooding.

Ten bids PALMA Town Hall has received 10 requests from companies seeking authorisation to operate electric scooters. Slow down A LOWERED speed limit on all secondary roads in Spain from 100kph to 90kph, introduced on Tuesday, also applies to eight roads in Mallorca.

The Council of Ministers approved the measure, which is designed to cut the death toll from road accidents, last month. Nationally, 66 per cent of road fatalities occur on secondary roads, about half of which are due to cars leaving the highway usually due to excessive speed.

Arson arrest THE National Police arrested a suspected arsonist believed to be responsible for a number of container fires in Palma.

But it not believed the 39year-old Spanish man is behind more than 100 incidents which have destroyed around 300 containers and a dozen cars in the last 12 months, causing over €300,000 worth of damage.

On one occasion, a man reportedly suffered severe smoke inhalation and ‘almost died,’

meaning whoever was responsible for setting fire to a nearby container could face charges of attempted murder.

According to police sources, the detainee was being held in connection with the torching of 11 large waste containers in the s’Arenal streets of Canyes, Asdrubal and Trasime, on December 8.

The attacks took place in broad daylight, unlike the others which occurred during the night.

Fatal work accident A WORKMAN died a fte r lig h t c a b les above a baggage conveyor he was repairing at Son Sant Joan Airport fell on top of him.

Hospital staff attacked A PATIENT threatened to kill and physically assaulted a doctor and a warden at Son Espases Hospital, minutes before he was due to have surgery.

According to the Medical Association of the Balearic Islands, the attacker had been ‘aggressive’ with the hospital staff who dealt with him, but things escalated as he was being prepared for an operation.

The patient reportedly became violent, and although healthcare professionals tried to calm him down, he began to insult and threatened to kill an anaesthetist.

A warden who tried to intervene was allegedly punched in the face, smashing his glasses and cutting his face. Hospital security was called to calm the patient, and the police were informed.

Assaulting a public health professional in their place of work is classified as ‘an attack on authority’ in the Criminal Case, punishable with up to four years in prison.

President of the College of Physicians, Manuela Garcia Romero, sent the support of the college and ‘condemned’ the attack.

Access steps THE Municipal Transport Company (EMT) of Palma has purchased 47 platforms to improve wheelchair access in 20 bus stops.

A further 101 stops will also be adapted to make it easier for people with re-

duc e d mobility or pushchairs to use the public transport.

The public company has set aside €80,000 to carry out the improvements, according to the city council.

Joan Ferrer, stressed the move will make it easier for ‘older people, mothers and fathers who bring their children in pushchairs and people with reduced mobility’ to use the buses comfortably.

Hurt in fall A MAN in his 70’s was hospitalised after falling from the second floor of a residential building in Port de Pollensa on Tuesday. According to emergency services, the injured man was taken to the emergency department at Inca Hospital at 5.30am having sustained several injuries, including cuts and bruises.

It is thought the pensioner could have fallen while trying to get into his home by scaling the outside of the building.

Price rise THE average cost of a home in the Balearics is €2,561 per sqm, 40 per cent higher than five years ago, according to figures from website Fotocasa, disclosed by the National Ministry of Development.

Fire probe PALMA firefighters put out a fire in the kitchen of Tagomago Restaurant in the centre of Palma at 12.30am on Monday. The eaterie was empty at the time, and the cause is under investigation.

Trapped in freezing conditions TWO expatriate hikers spent the night in subzero temperatures in the mountainous Torrent de Pareis after one of them became trapped.

The Mountain Rescue Group of Mallorca Fire Service rescued the woman the following morning after her male friend managed to swim to the Calobra beach to raise the alarm.

He escorted rescuers to the location and ex-

plained she had been unable to escape herself after the area became flooded.

The woman was given a neoprene (rubber) suit and taken to safety on a raft, with the help of the Soller Park and the Inca Mountain Rescue Group.

The non-Spanish pair are said to be in ‘good condition’ though suffering slight hypothermia.

Arson and threats to kill A TRIAL date has been set for the case of a man accused of setting fire to the front door of his ex-wife’s house and threatening to kill her.

The Audiencia of Palma will continue proceedings next Thursday and the Prosecutor’s Office is expected to ask that he be sentenced to 10 years in prison for arson and serious threats.

It is alleged in December 2017, after learning his expartner was in a new relationship, the accused began to send messages insulting

her and calling her ‘insistently.’

Messages left on her answering machine are said to have included ‘I’m going to kill you, I swear, I do not care about everyone, you’re going to die tonight’ and ‘you’re going to burn like a dog, I am not kidding.’

That same night, the defendant is alleged to have gone to the victim’s house, sprayed the outside of the door with a flammable liquid and set it on fire. His ex’s son apparently put out the fire with buckets of water.

Pregnant robber AN eight-month pregnant drug user who violently robbed an 82-year-old woman in Palma in November has been sentenced to 23 months in prison.

The defendant reportedly pushed the pensioner to the floor and kicked her before running off with her purse, containing €130. The sentence was suspended and the robber released.

‘Negligent manslaughter’ investigation into Julen case A COURT in Malaga has opened a negligent manslaughter investigation into the death of two-year-old Julen who was killed when he fell down a well.

According to Spanish media, officials will examine two leads; whether the owner of the land Julen died on, or the man who bored the hole, Antonio Sanchez, were negligent, and how Julen came to be buried under large quantities of soil after his fall.

The negligent manslaughter charge carries a sentence of one to four years in prison for serious cases, or a fine in more minor instances. Anyone found to be at fault could also be liable for compensation to Julen’s parents, as well as for the costs of the rescue operation, thought to be millions of Euros.

cousin, the owner of the land, and two walkers who came to the family’s aid.

Officials say these statements could uncover how Julen came to be buried under around 70 centimetres of soil and rocks after his fall, leading rescuers to incorrectly believe the boy was trapped two-thirds of the way down the borehole.

After finding a build-up of soil, workers initially believed Julen was trapped at a blockage around 72metres down the well they thought measured 110-metres. Fears any attempts to rescue the child from above could lead to more harm to him prompted experts to build a second hole and connecting tunnel, taking almost two weeks.

GUARDIA CIVIL officers have found the body of a 45-year-old man in a well in Andalucia days after the rem ai ns of t wo- year- ol d Jul en wer e found.

Emergency services were alerted to the corpse after police were told the man had taken his dog for a walk and had not returned home at around noon on Sunday.

Officers were then despatched to Vi l l anueva de Tr abuco, i n Mal aga Pr ovi nce, af t er bei ng cal l ed out at about 11.10pm.

Guardia Civil underwater specialists found the corpse inside the well at around 2.50am on Monday. An investigation has since been launched into the find.

Separately, firefighters in Galicia have rescued a 61-year-old woman with the symptoms of hypothermia after she became trapped in a well.

One firefighter had to be lowered into the well, in the Salcedo area of Pont ever da, t o pul l out t he t r apped woman. She was stuck in the well with water up to her waist, emergency services said.

Medical personnel treated her at the scene after she was pulled free.

The victims, both in their 70’s, were seriously injured due to the gas explosion in their bungalow. According to the Provincial Fire Brigade, it is likely that an accumulation of butane gas in the kitchen caused the accident, and as the couple had only just purchased two new gas bottles, this theory is well supported. The impact of the 2.30pm explosion was so strong that it caused the windows and doors at the back of the property to blow out and shatter, with the frames crumpling at the same time.

First on the scene were neighbour John and Roger, who were at home at the time.

“On hearing the explosion, we rushed round to Shirley and Brian’s,” said John. “The first thing we saw was Shirley, who suffers from dementia, just standing there in the middle of the room in shock. Her clothes were all burnt and had fallen off and her body was totally black.

She looked like a zombie from a film and had suffered particularly serious burns to her legs.

“Brian, who’s got cancer, was covered in glass and blood.”

Roger immediately called the emergency services, who after several minutes of questions about the incident, sent Torre-

After the emergency medical team checked Shirley and Brian over, they were rushed to Torrevieja Hospital and from there to the Burns Department at the General Hospital in Alicante.

Thankfully, Shirley and Brian are going to be fine and will be returning home within a few days, Frank and John told the EWN shortly after visiting the couple in hospital on Tuesday afternoon.

NATIONAL Tackling fake medicines PHARMACIES across Spain are set to adopt a new system which helps to verify medicines against a national list of prescriptions next Saturday.

The new system was brought in after the EU passed new rules aimed to tackle counterfeit medicine.

It has been trialled successfully in Logroño in La Rioja.

Maria Angeles Figuerola, director of the new SEVeM system, said: “The new system will create even more guarantees of safety for patients.”

Couple arrested POLICE found a young woman locked inside a cupboard, allegedly by her boyfriend, 19, after responding to reports of violence at the property in Pontevedra.

The 20-year-old told officers she was locked up regularly as a form of ‘punishment.’

When Local Police tried to arrest the male, his girlfriend allegedly punched the officer, and they were both detained. The woman was later charged and released, while her partner was remanded in custody for imprisonment and an additional charge of possession of hashish.

A TWENTY-FOUR-YEAROLD man from Liverpool has been jailed for stealing £4,500 from his granddad to pay for a holiday in Ibiza.

Brett Bridgen reportedly used online banking to send money into his personal account the day before travelling to the Spanish island.

Prosecutor, Jamie Baxter, said that the accused had visited his granddad, 73, at his home in Cheshire, on April 24, 2016 claiming he was owed a birthday present and was planning to fly to Ibiza the next day.

Two days later the victim received a call from the fraud action department reporting that thousands of pounds had been transferred between a savings account and a current account before being sent to Bridgen’s bank account, without authorisation.

According to British press reports, the offender has been jailed in the past for stealing from his grandfather.

Liverpool Crown Court was told that Bridgen’s grandfather has since found it difficult to sleep at night and to trust people as his relationships within the family had been strained.

DISPUTE: Spain has long claimed sovereignty over Gibraltar.

Decolonisation call SPAIN has called on the EU to include references to the ‘decolonisation’ of Gibraltar in future EU laws in the event of a no-deal Brexit, according to British media reports.

A Daily Telegraph report based on leaked documents claimed Spanish officials had attempted to put a footnote into draft EU legislation on visa-free travel in a no-deal scenario.

The text of the footnote would commit the EU to recognising that a dispute exists between Spain and Britain on sovereignty over Gibraltar if adopted.

The footnote would also state that the British enclave is registered on the UN’s

Non Self-Governing Territories list. Territories on the list are those that have not yet gained full independence, according to the UN. The draft EU document listed all of Britain’s overseas territories with Gibraltar marked and a reference to the footnote.

Gibraltar officials said the Spanish push for the footnote in the document would have no practical effect.

EU sources said Spain was attempting to demonstrate its power and leverage on Gibraltar as Britain’s withdrawal from the EU on Friday March 29 draws closer, according to The Telegraph.

France-Spain pipe setback SPAIN’S market regulator has rejected the first phase of a planned gas pipeline between the two countries saying it does not serve market needs.

The National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) and France both rejected part-one of the Midcat project.

Midcat is set to cost €3 billion in total and it would span from Spain to France through Cataluña if built.

The CNMC said Spain should continue to work towards greater integration into the European energy network.

Santander set to cut offices

Company policy concerns THREE of the largest companies in Spain have said they are concerned over what they said was a lack of legal certainty, surrounding economic policies the government has proposed.

Electricity provider Iberdrola, the BBVA bank and telecommunications firm Telefonica said planned tax hikes on investments and the increase of the minimum wage to €900 were causes for concern.

It comes after government ministers announced a range of policies which also include new levies on digital companies and currency exchanges.

Taxes have been raised to help fund planned increases in government spending.

SPANISH bank Santander has said it is going to close 140 of its British branches and cut 1,270 jobs due to the rise in online banking.

The bank is set to talk with unions over the closures.The bank’s British arm said branch transactions had fallen by 23 per cent during the last three years as the use of its online service has grown.

Susan Allen, head of retail banking at Santander UK, said: “The way clients relate to the bank has changed dramatically in recent years.”

how the new levy could be combined with existing corporate taxes.

Montero said the government wanted to be sure there were no misunderstandings on the part of business if and when the new tax comes into force.

The new levy, dubbed the ‘Google Tax,’ taxes companies 3 per cent on online advertising, brokerage and the sale of data and metadata.

A ghostly visitation LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT WELL, I’ve just appeared in a haunted hotel. No not as an apparition (yeah, yeah!) Just as this old, boring pop-singing mortal I’m afraid.

The hotel in question is situated in the depths of the beautiful, but somewhat foreboding New Forest. It’s called the Foxlease.

Parts of this imposing edifice date back to the 16th century and it abounds with stories of unexplained noises and apparitions, which over the years have manifested both to its staff and residents alike.

All right, all right, I can hear the snorts of derision from here. No, this is not some establishment trying to sell rooms on the backs of paranormal spirits created by some dubious PR exercise.

On the contrary, because the main core of their business is centred on Guides, Scouts, and schools whose students take camping holidays and ‘outward bound’ courses in the summer, they are trying to keep the whole thing as quiet as possible.

As a spiritualist and staunch believer in such things, I was more than a little interested to find out as much as I could about their numerous supernatural experiences.

SCARY: Would you have the courage to stay the night?

Subsequently, on further investigation of the hotel I found that a number of the restricted areas (purposely not used as guest accommodation!), were extremely spooky indeed.

In fact, while I was there, the landlord took a small party on a guided tour of these areas. Within a few minutes, one young lady rushed back into the lounge, and shaking noticeably, told me she was frightened to even walk down one of the corridors! The staff and landlord were actually extremely ‘matter of fact’ and quite nonchalant

about the whole situation. An acceptance I had not actually experienced before, and did indeed lend a whole new authenticity to their ghostly claims and stories.

Apparently none of them lock their bedroom doors at night, they explained this was a precaution enabling them to escape in a hurry should they feel the need! All had heard the noise of footsteps and children talking and crying. The landlord told me last summer he was having a drink with a friend in the garden, when the friend sud-

denly froze and went deathly white. When he asked him what the matter was, he said he’d just seen a woman walk out through the wall of the hotel!

Apparently, a few years ago, without them naming the hotel, Channel Five’s TV paranormal ‘Ghostbusters’ spent a few nights filming there.

They later reported, in their opinion, there were eight ghostly ‘guests’ residing on the premises.

Sometime later the landlord invited the Royal Navy paranormal squad (yep they really do exist, mainly to investigate reports of ship haunting) to look in to their claims. This team had no connection or links with the TV series, but lo and behold, after their overnight stay, they too reported they had detected eight spirits in the hotel! Whoooooo!

Well be that as it may, and having actually seen a (never forgotten) manifestation at the age of four, I am not a sceptic and my mind is always totally open to all things both spiritual and mortal.

I have to confess however, despite their kind invitation, we declined their offer to stay the night!

Being hacked can change your life, as the 2013 movie ‘Identity Thief’ portrayed so graphically. The hero is ruined financially, loses his job, is falsely identified as a drug dealer, and is arrested for missing a court date for a crime he didn’t commit, all from online identity theft.

BE AWARE: Have you been ‘pwned?’ over to the instructions alongside to check safely and easily whether your own e-mail accounts are secure, just for starters.

I just did and alarmingly, two of the three e-mail accounts I use have been compromised, one of them by three different sets of hackers.

How does that happen? Let me not

name the ways, there are simply far too many and increasing by the day.

One of the most recent, if you’ve ever stayed at a Marriott hotel anywhere in the world, in November they admitted ‘losing’ 500 million customer records to hackers. Oops.

Yahoo had a breathtaking one billion accounts compromised in 2016.

LinkedIn released 165 million account-holders’ data into the wild. Sony, Tumblr and Evernote have all been breached and the list goes on. And on.

‘Sextortion’ is the newest twist in this never-ending story. Hackers with stolen passwords ambush their victims, showing the passwords as ‘proof’ they have records of porn site visits, which they will release to family and friends if ransoms are not paid.

According to the ‘Have I been pwned’ website (see alongside), my own far less salacious data went public thanks to breaches of Dropbox, an online ‘spambot’ in Holland, and a South African cinema club I joined in another life.

As the site specifies, the stolen data includes my birth date, my e-mail address, my gender, my name, my passwords, my phone numbers, my physical address and my spoken languages.

All that seems missing is my underwear size. At least until M&S gets hacked.

How secure is your e-mail?

IS your e-mail still secure, and with it, your registrations on sites which have recorded that e-mail address? One simple check may help.

Being ‘pwned’ (pronounced ‘poned’ but your mileage may differ) is a streetwise corruption of being perfectly ‘owned.’

Doctor Who kicks off series 12 filming in South Africa Gill are filming thanks to the c a s t o f Wa l s h ’s o t h e r s h o w, The Chase.

His chasers revealed while a c c e p t i n g a N a t i o n a l Te l e v i s i o n Aw a r d o n J a n u a r y 2 2 , that Bradley couldn’t be with them because he was busy working on Doctor Who in South Africa!

Doctor Who previously used South Africa to double for the American Deep South in the 13th Doctor adventure ‘Rosa,’ which saw the TARDIS family trying to preserve a historic moment in the American civil rights movement from a time meddler.

Telly making me grumpy Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man AS my readers know by now, Mrs S and I like a bit of telly. Currently there are two shows making me grumpy: The Voice and The Greatest Dancer.

It’s not the content, but the judges, and not actually the judges themselves, but their clothes. The shows have been on for three weeks now and in every episode they are wearing the same clobber.

Now, either they stink, or all the episodes are filmed on the same day. If so, at least give them a few changes of clothing because it’s really getting on my nerves.

How hard can it be to have a few shirts around for the blokes and some frocks for the ladies? I mean, for goodness sake, make an effort to make me believe it’s just not churned out on one day.

Here’s another one the PC brigade have come up with. In movies where the storyline features a disabled person they say the part should only be played by a genuinely disabled person.

I am registered 66 per cent disabled so I am allowed an opinion on this. Here it is.

Don’t talk nonsense - if there is a disabled actor who fits the role then fine, and if not, then use any actor who can do the part justice and make the movie as realistic as possible.

Eddie Redmayne, Al Pacino, Daniel DayLewis, Tom Hanks and Leo DiCaprio - to name just a few - have all done it, done it well and in a sympathetic way.

Who are we to say that Sean Penn has no right to portray someone with a disability?

That’s his job - to portray people who he is not - and he’s pretty good at it too. That’s what actors do! It’s getting ridiculous.

Let’s take advertising. Does every painkiller ad have to be played by someone with a headache? What about the Maltesers ad where two secretaries are chatting - here’s an exclusive - they are really actors!

Oh and here’s something I’m sure is going to shock you: the meerkat compare insurance ads don’t actually feature real meerkats!

Of course, there are some brilliant actors with disabilities or learning difficulties who play great parts like Liz Carr in Silent Witness, RJ Mitte from Breaking Bad and Liam Bairstow from Coronation Street.

On that subject, I’m trying to get hold of David Walliams as I am the real Andy Pipkin from Little Britain, because although I use a wheelchair, I can get up and walk and I want them to use me in the show in future.

Still strutting their stuff!

I’VE written here before about some of the strange musical phenomena which punctuated my school days.

In 1981, I was taken aback by the arrival in England of The Stray Cats. The spectacularly coiffured retro rockers who took the 1950’s sound of Sun Studio Rockabilly, added a dash of punk attitude and styling, and for a brief period, added something different and pure to the charts.

Formed in Massapequa, New York in 1979 by guitarist and singer Brian Setzer, double bass player Lee Rock and drummer Slim Jim Phantom, the trio quickly picked up a substantial following across New York.

STRAY CATS: On tour. few gigs they met rock ‘n’ roller and producer Dave Edmunds who offered to produce their first album. The eponymous Stray Cats was released in 1981.

This Town and Stray Cat Strut cemented their popularity.

This year marks the band’s 40th anniversary and they have just announced a European tour.

Music fans who want to see Rock n Roll in its purest form should try and catch them.

OF all the self-improvement obsessions which have gripped the UK this month - like ‘Veganuary,’ ‘dry January’ and ‘clothes sobriety’ (a respite from retail therapy) - none seems to have gripped more than the first one, the worship of the plant-based diet, veganism.

But please can we stop talking about it so much? Yes, it’s on the rise, however, and in the past four years the number of vegans in the UK has quadrupled to 600,000, with many more signing up to ‘Veganuary.’

But let’s get to the meat (sorry, couldn’t resist) of the issue. The problem with veganism (and vegetarianism, for that matter) is it seems to turn what simply amounts to a food choice, into basically, a religion.

One which apparently requires its adherents to try to make converts of the rest of us in a humour-free, hectoring fashion with about as much warmth and brio as a dinner party jointly hosted by Jeremy Corbyn and Theresa May. My other ‘beef’ is why do vegans try to imitate meat, fish or dairy products? An imitation burger will always compare unfavourably with a decent meat one. They should be developing their own cuisine, with

As veganism grows and McDonald’s offers vegan Happy Meals, even naysayers like Gordon Ramsay, who once said if his children ever went vegetarian he’d electrocute them, offered a Veganuary menu. (Well, business is business.)

However, another big trend is, apparently, flexitarian; people who eat meat, fish and dairy but want to cut back or try vegan/veggie food. A bit like the chap who decided he was trans-vegan so he could virtue signal all day but still have a nice bit of steak in the evening. But each to their own.

Take my dog, for instance, who is lactose and gluten-intolerant but loves chips. Only kidding! As for me, I’m off to have my eggs, bacon, black pudding, sausages and fried bread (all cooked in delicious duck fat) breakfast. What more could anyone want?

How to cancel insurance?

I would like to cancel my medical insurance at the end of 2019. When exactly do I have to cancel it? Can I do it now, or must I wait until December 2019?

If your insurance office is near you, my advice is to deliver your written notice personally and discuss it with your agent or broker. In addition, inform your bank in writing not to pay the insurance bill. Just in case. It is surprising how often the insurance company sends the bill and the bank pays it, even when they are properly informed. Do this in November.

More questions than answers Reader John Hare in Almeria Province has taken issue with the EWN over its coverage of the PGOU master plan that helps to make homes legal in Zurgena.

HAVING attended the PGOU meeting, it was good to think that quite a high number of Zurgena residents may eventually, in time, get legal status for their property.

However, having sat through the whole meeting, seen the article in the Euro Weekly News, I must take issue over some of what I heard and have read. The main reason for my suspicion is the status of some of the land as on the plan shown at the meeting, seems to be clearly wrong and contravenes one of the strictest parts of the LOUA planning laws. That is: Article 46. Non Urbanisable Land (Suelo No Urbanizable) Section i. “It presents real risks of erosion, slippage, landslide, flood or other natural risks.” Many properties have already been affected by flooding and some have lost land into the ramblas (gulley). There are even cases where the villas are very close to crumbling edges and look dodgy to say the least.

Such examples, I would have thought, must be non-urbanisable yet shown on the provided plan as Non Consolidated Urban. I therefore think it is misleading to the community to make quotes such as ‘approval of the PGOU in its entirety’ and ‘all properties shown as urban consolidated, urban not consolidated and urbanisable will become urban consolidated, in other words fully legal.’

If the council intends to issue more building licences on such land in the future, surely, this could be very misleading and costly to unsuspecting buyers.

Ultimately we need honesty and transparency from the council.

Rest in peace WE were sad to learn that the remains of Julen, the twoyear-old boy who fell down a well in Andalucia’s Malaga Province, were found on Saturday.

Post-mortem tests have now begun on his body, with the results due in about two weeks. Coroners and forensic experts said the two-year-old probably free fell 71 metres down the bore hole in Totalan.

Sunday saw hundreds of mourners gather at Malaga City’s San Juan Cemetery for Julen’s funeral. Parents Jose Rosello and Victoria Garcia were joined by government officials and those who took part in rescue efforts for the ceremony.

The death of Julen is tragic, made all the more so by the fact the two-year-old’s parents lost another son in 2017.

The search for Julen saw the local community rally round to lend its efforts in hope of reaching him alive.

Their efforts were in vain but in the tragedy we saw how the desire to put aside daily concerns to help those in jeopardy can push people to heroic lengths. Those efforts captured the imagination of our readers, Spain and large parts of the world.

The death has also cast light on the wider issue of illegal wells in Spain. The Ministry of Agriculture estimates there could be as many as 510,000 throughout the country.

But for now we join our readers who commented in the hundreds on our coverage to say: ‘Rest in peace’ to Julen.

He landed on earth that filled up the lower part of the well and there was no water. He wouldn’t have drowned, but most definitely that fall would have killed him instantly.

You may wonder why a stranger in the UK is writing this?

I’ve no one to talk to - and Julen has been on my mind since the accident. It helps me - as i hope it does you too - to know he didn’t suffer.

Quarter of antibiotics ‘unnecessary’ ANTIBIOTICS - once prescribed freely for even minor infections - are increasingly being given out less frequently due to concerns we are becoming resistant to them.

Even so, a recent study found that in 2016 one in six patients was still given antibiotics they did not need.

Researchers at the University of Michigan looked at antibiotic prescriptions for privately insured Americans and found that 23 per cent were unnecessary, and 28 per cent were given without diagnosis, while only 36 per cent were possibly necessary, and even fewer - 8 per cent - were absolutely necessary.

The data also showed that one in 10 children had received an unnecessary prescription in 2016.

Kao-Ping Chua, lead author of the study, warned that the study may still underestimate the full extent of the problem, and that overuse of antibiotics may one day make even the mildest of infections impossible to treat.

Dr Chua, who is a researcher and paediatrician at the University of Michigan C S Mott Children’s Hospital and the U-M Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation, explained: “Antibiotic resistance is one of the greatest threats to public health in the world, and the large number of antibiotics that providers prescribe for patients are a major driver of resistance.”

The expert added: “Providers urgently need to eliminate prescribing that is not needed, for the sake of patients and society.”

Exclusive preview: Bargain Loving Brits

By Sally Underwood THIS Thursday, fans of popular series Bargain Loving Brits in the Sun will be introduced to a whole raft of characters trying to carve out a new life in Spain.

Episode four, airing on Channel 5 at 8pm UK time, will see audiences meet Jill Newman-Rogers, who runs ARCH horse rescue, and follow her as she races around dealing with cases of equine cruelty and neglect.

This week, Jill will check up on Askara, a horse which has been attacked and suffered an extensive facial injury. Expensive nose surgery is

needed, but the charity does not have the finances to pay up front. Will generous Britons dig deep and raise the necessary funds?

The Euro Weekly News exclusively caught up with Jill to discuss the charity’s work. Jill said although the episode had not yet aired, since filming began last summer, “it has been an excellent year for rehoming.” She added: “Around 99 per cent of horses we take in are cruelty cases or abandoned and unidentified. We are very grateful to those who take them in.”

In the same episode, viewers are introduced to Andy Wainwright from Nottingham, who runs a second-hand

INCREASING house prices and growing populations have seen a series of companies innovate to try to solve the issue of shrinking property spaces.

In response to the issue, a new wave of multipurpose furniture is increasingly gaining in popularity, signalling an end to the days when a small home meant limitations of the amount of furniture or uses a property could have.

Time for change on planning laws?

EXPERTS say they hope Spain’s central government may make changes to urban planning laws, allowing for easier development.

At the Europa Press Foro Inmobiliario (real estate forum) in Madrid, specialists claimed they want to work with the government to improve urban planning and reduce regulatory barriers in an effort to create more office buildings, warehouses, urbanisations, and public buildings.

At one conference, ‘The real estate sector facing the challenge of planning large cities,’ according to ideal ista.com, experts discussed the General Urban Plan (PGOU), the current legislation governing planning law.

Barry Duke IN the space of a week, first as a passenger in a taxi and then on a bus, I heard the respective drivers swearing like fishwives after they’d come within inches of what could have been two serious prangs.

In both instances - in the same week that Prince Philip, 97, crashed his Land Rover - the cars which had caused the near-collisions had UK licence plates and elderly drivers.

Most of what the bus driver yelled was incomprehensible to me. But I got the gist of what he shouted: ‘Foreign drivers are s*&t!’

The taxi driver ’s tirade, on the other hand, was in English and he told me foreign drivers were the bane of his life. ‘The problem is they are far too old and have no idea what they’re doing.’ Then, suddenly realising he may have offended me, he asked whether I drove.

I replied that I gave up because I suffer glaucoma, a condition which has robbed me of my peripheral vision. So I decided the responsible thing to do was to pack in motorcycles and cars.

For decades, I tore around the streets of London on a variety of motorbikes without getting turned into flying mince by incompetent drivers, but when I moved to Brighton, all that changed.

Very soon I learned the roads of Sussex were full of pensioners mainly driving Volvos, and they only ever looked into their rear view mirrors to check whether they were wearing their cloth caps and spectacles.

On one occasion, a Volvo ahead of me stopped without warning. The driver then threw the car into reverse, and crashed into me.

Amazingly he angrily accused me of rear-ending him! The old geezer quickly backed down when a witness confirmed not only was I stationary when I was hit, but that I

was sounding my horn. Turned out the driver was practically stone deaf.

But British drivers in Spain are often heard loudly complaining that Spanish drivers are the ones who are rubbish. This from freelance writer Sandra Piddock: ‘Your average Spaniard is very laid back and never in a hurry; unless he’s behind the wheel.

‘He’ll overtake anyone who isn’t going fast enough for him, which means just about everybody else on the road. What’s really annoying is the way the Spanish signal their intentions. They don’t, and you have to play Mystic Meg and guess where they’re heading.

‘The average Spaniard is so full of his own importance behind the wheel he expects everyone to know what he’s doing and where he’s going. If you don’t guess right, it’s your fault, not his.’

I’m fine not owning a vehicle in Spain because bus and train fares are dirt cheap, and taxis charge fair prices, so my annual outlay on transport is minimal.

But not everyone thinks public transport is a good thing. A moronic Tory politician once told me in all seriousness that if London were to ban buses, car drivers would get around the city far faster than they do.

Both the 917 and 914 are celebrating 50 years of being on the road this y e a r, w h i l e t h e Panamera has reached its 10th birthday.

Porsche said it was committed to making the history of its company tangible. Events have been planned at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, Germany and others are set to take place across the world.

Technicians at the Porsche Museum have been working to restore the first 917 ever built, to mark the occasion.

by Nick Fletcher DACIA sent a shock wave through the car industry back in 2012 when it launched its Duster, an attractively styled SUV priced at €11,322 (£9,995), and undercutting rivals by huge amounts.

Seven years on, the Duster is well established and the entry model still costs €11,322 (£9,995).

Dacia, part of the giant Renault Group, uses well-proven petrol and diesel engines and Duster models also come with a choice of two or four-wheel drive and depending on model, with manual or automatic gearboxes.

Entry-level versions are very sparsely equipped, though airconditioning and powered front windows are standard.

Most buyers will opt for midrange models which offer more standard equipment yet are still comparatively low in price.

My featured model, the midrange Duster Comfort with twowheel drive and a 1.5-litre diesel engine, costs €17,438 (£15,395).

BIRTHDAY: The first 917 is being restored for its 50th anniversary.

They have been working for years to return it to the condition the car was in when it made its world debut in 1969.

The 917 premiered at the Geneva Motor Show in 1969 and it won the first of 19 gold medals

at the Le Mans 24 Hours race a year later.

The 914 was first presented at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, Germany in 1 9 6 9 . I t w a s G e r m a n y ’s f i r s t mid-engine sports car and came

The Porsche Panamera was the company’s first four-door saloon car and it was premiered in Shanghai in 2009.

It featured a number of technical innovations never included in a luxury series Porsche car.

A special exhibition has been organised at the Porsche Museum to mark 10 years since it made its debut.

Dacia Duster Comfort The 1.5-litre 113hp diesel unit is smooth and relatively quiet and delivers a 0-100kph time of 10.2 seconds and a top speed of 178kph (111mph), fairly typical of class standards.

Emissions are low at 115g/km and average fuel economy excellent at 22.6kpl (64mpg).

The firm ride quality is not quite as comfortable as some SUVs but the overall handling is assured, with composed cornering and good steering.

It is hard to significantly fault the Duster; it offers tremendous value for money across the range.

give it a smarter look.

The seats have also been improved to provide more comfort. The car seats four with adequate room for front and rear occupants and you can squeeze in a fifth if necessary. Boot space is good at 445 litres, boosted to a substantial 1,623 litres by folding the rear seats, giving the Duster top marks for practicality.

ALREADY the holder of a number of Spanish football records, Barcelona’s win over Girona on Sunday edged superstar Lionel Messi even closer to yet another milestone.

Taking into account the 0-2 victory, the Argentine, 31, has now won 328 matches in 437 appearances in La Liga, overtaking Raul Gonzales, who notched up 327 out of 550.

Just six more victories will see Messi match the all-time record, held by Real Madrid legend Casillas with 334 wins.

The Barca favourite holds the record for the most goals scored (50) in a single league campaign in 2011/2012, and is the highest scorer in the history of La Liga.

While Nelson Semedo opened the score sheet on Sunday, banging home his first goal of the season, Messi himself guaranteed the points with a second inside the last 20 minutes.

Atletico also celebrated a 2-0 victory when they took on Getafe on Saturday, keeping them hot on the heels of leaders Barcelona.

SERBIAN tennis player Novak Djokovic has bested Spanish rival Rafael Nadal in the final of the Australian Open, securing victory in Melbourne just over two hours.

Djokovic, 31, beat 32-yearold Nadal by 6-3, 6-2 and 6-3 on Sunday, his biggest margin of any of his victories.

It is the third consecutive win for Djovovic in seven months, having previously taken home titles at Wimbledon and New York.

Djokovic said the match was truly perfect. Going up against the Mallorcan Nadal made the match important but amazing, he added.

“The ultimate clay-court challenge is to win against Nadal,” Djovokic said.

Cabrera sent off, both for two bookable offences.

Atletico have lost just once in the 20 league games this season.

Meanwhile Real Madrid won convincingly, 2-4, against Espanyol adding weight to their claim that their recovery is fact, not fluke.

EIGHTEEN months after leaving Real Madrid for Chelsea, striker Alvaro Morata looks set to return to La Liga on loan to Atletico Madrid.

The 26-year-old told press at the weekend that he had passed a medical and is ‘looking forward’ to returning to Spain, adding ‘I’ve spent days waiting for this.’

In 2017, Morata signed a five-year contract when he joined Chelsea, and has made 47 Premier League appearances, scoring 16 goals.

He began his career at Atletico, second in the division, before signing for city rivals Real.
