Blazing start to the New Year for Palma’s firefighters WHILE revellers were toasting the start of 2019, Palma Fire Service kicked off the New Year tackling a van fire before evacuating residents in ‘grave danger ’ from an apartment block. The first call out of the year was to a field in Son Banya where a Transit vehicle had been set alight and was totally destroyed by fire. Within 24 hours, the fire service had posted at least six further tweets detailing incidents they had attended, including a ‘serious’ flat fire. Several residents at the apartment block in Palma suffered smoke inhalation and one received burns after a fire broke out on the first floor at around 8.30am. The incident has prompted calls from Palma Fire Service for more troops, pointing out the ‘bodies of securi-
ty and rescue cannot be at the expense of limitations and cuts which endanger the security of the people.’

A BRITISH woman suffered a brain injury and multiple fractures after plunging 25 metres from a rock face at Randa mountain in Algaida on New Year’s Day. The 25-year-old was airlifted to Son Espases Hospital in Palma, where she is currently in intensive care. The woman, part of a group who had parked at the Cura sanctuary car park, seems to have lost her footing in the dark.
