by Tara Rippin POLICE suspect an arsonist with inside knowledge torched six cars and 25 motorcycles in a parking enclosure at a force headquarters in Palma on Monday morning. Firefighters confirm the blaze started at the Local Police barracks in Son Gotleu at around 4am, adding that the flames spread rapidly despite the fact the vehicles were spaced between four and five metres apart. More than €400,000 worth of damage was caused during the suspected arson attack. It has since been reported that an internal report in 2015 alerted police chiefs to the lack of security measures at the car park.

Cameras are said to ‘work perfectly,’ but the images are not recorded awaiting the installation of a new server for the computer system, scheduled for next week. In light of the reliance on ‘too much chance’ or ‘privileged information,’ investigating officers suspect the attack is the work of somebody with inside knowledge. The Son Gotleu headquarters is not enabled as a complaints office, and it does not have a customer service. It is basically a site which houses police staff lockers and official vehicles are kept. The mentioned report, which was prepared by the police officials, pointed out the cameras outside the enclosure

were not recording, the fence did not reach the entire perimeter, and the external doors, which are made of aluminium, are weak. But police sources pointed out that these ‘deficiencies in security’ do not affect the deposit where officers keep their firearms. The armoured room has a surveillance system that does record. Angelica Pastor, the councillor of Public Safety has released in a statement: “The person or persons responsible for what happened has little fear of entering a police station and has done much harm to citizens. Now the most urgent is to solve the operational problem that has been created.”
