SEARCH: The body of Arthur was found on Tuesday.

A MASSIVE search operation came to an end in Mallorca on Tuesday after authorities confirmed they had found the body of missing five-year-old Arthur Robinson, who disappeared in the flash floods that swept the island last week.

The youngster was washed away by the severe floods on the island on August 9. His mother Joana Lliteras Planas, 40, died after plucking her daughter Ursula from the torrent of water engulfing their vehicle. Arthur ’s father David Robinson, was report-

edly working in London at the time.

A Guardia Civil spokesperson wrote that ‘unfortunately the worst omens have been fulfilled and the body of Arthur has been found. Our condolences to his relatives.’

The rescue operation searched several parts of the river Ses Plenes which stretches between Sant Llorenc and Son Carrio and Arthur Robinson’s body was discovered about 500 metres away from the last bridge in the town of Sant Llorenç.

Missing boy’s body found

TRAGIC: Young Arthur’s mum Joana Lliteras Planas, also died in the floods.

A memorial service was due to be held last night at 7pm by the Bishop of Mallorca, Sebastia Taltavull, to pay tribute to those who lost their lives on the island in the freak storms.

The service was due to be held in the Parish of Nostra Senyora dels Dolors in Manacor and King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain are expected to attend.

With the discovery of the lifeless body of Arthur, the number of fatalities on the island has now risen to 13 according to Spanish media.

NEWS EXTRA Tourism figures THE amount of holidaymakers who have visited Spain this year is expected to stand at 81.2 million according to forecasts from the Tourism Ministry, a fall of 0.8 per cent or almost 700,000 compared to 2017.

Stolen babies doctor walks free amidst appeal plans

By Joe Gerrard PROSECUTORS have said they will appeal against a Madrid court’s ruling which found a doctor guilty over Spain’s historic stolen babies scandal, but spared him jail.

Madrid’s provincial court convicted Eduardo Vela on all charges after he stood trial over claims he stole a baby and gave it to supporters of former dictator Francisco Franco in 1969.

The 85-year-old was allowed to walk free after the trial because the legal limit for convicting him had expired.

Madrid Public Prosecutors now plan to lodge an appeal with Spain’s Supreme Court in an effort to secure a sentence.

Vela is the first person to stand trial over the stealing of an estimated 300,000 babies from their mothers to sell to families who supported Franco during his rule.

The former gynaecologist was accused of taking Ines Madrigal from her real mother in 1969 and handing her to a 46year-old woman who raised her as her own child.

Madrid’s provincial court convicted Vela on charges of unlawful detention, falsifying official documents and certifying a

non-existent birth at the trial last week. Judges said the 85-yearold’s guilt had been proved ‘indisputably’ and that it was ‘crystal clear’ Vela had forged documents to allow for the taking of Madrigal.

The judgement went onto state that the defendant would not go to prison because the

‘statute of limitation,’ or time limit to press charges, had passed. Vela told the court he did not remember details of how his San Ramon clinic in Madrid had been run.

Madrigal, from Murcia, said she now thought she would never know the identity of her real parents and that Vela would take

it with him to the grave.

“I feel good because the judges acknowledged the theft, but of course I don’t agree with the statute of limitations point,” she said. Madrigal’s lawyer Guillermo Peña argued the statute did not apply in the case because she did not find out about the theft until 2010.

Mum to be attack A FOUR-MONTH pregnant 16-year-old was hospitalised after she and her boyfriend, 20, were allegedly kicked and punched by two of her relatives in Son Banya. According to sources, a fight broke out between two family members.

The couple intervened and were apparently attacked by the suspects.

THIS village in the Aragon region has recently topped a list of the 30 most beautiful towns in Spain.

Albarracin, in Teruel Province, saw off competition from almost 250 settlements from across the country in El Viajero’s online poll which ran from September 28 to October 2.

Albarracin, with a population of

around 1,075, was named a National Monument in 1961 due to its historical and cultural heritage.

The name Albarracin is thought to come from the Banu Razin dynasty who chose the town as the capital of its fiefdom from the early 11th century.

Poverty fears MORE than 275,000 people in Mallorca are at risk of poverty or social exclusion, according to the Network for Social Inclusion EAPNBalearics.

A report shows that this relates to 25 per cent of the population of the islands, a rise of 5 per cent since 2016.

Some 87,000 people apparently survive on €355 a month, which represents 7.8 per cent of residents, so ‘despite economic prosperity, the current

trend is for the poor to be poorer.’

EAPN claims the ‘islands are becoming the paradise of social inequality,’ where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

It warned about the ineffectiveness of public policies to protect the most vulnerable and to promote the redistribution of wealth.

Statistics show that people earning less than €1,000 per month has risen from 34 per cent in 2016 to 39 per cent.

Resident rise THE foreign population in the Balearics will almost double over the next 15 years, according to forecasts by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

There are currently 285,989 non-Spanish living on the islands, which is predicted to jump to 545,868 by 2033.

The Spanish population, on the other hand, is expected to fall by 847.

The predictions are based on there being an average of 20,000

more foreign residents every year for the next 15 years.

This will take the total population of the islands from 1,166,603 to 1,425,636, a larger hike than any other region in Spain.

More births than deaths are apparently a factor in explaining the rising population, as more young people move to the area. And according to INE, the Balearics and the Canaries are the two regions where there are the highest rates of immigration versus emigration.

EWN online this week MAKING HISTORY: Gonzalez and Grandela worked on the Apollo 11 mission.

Space Race link TWO Spanish technicians have spoken about their time working for NASA on the Apollo 11 Moon landing ahead of the release of a film based on the mission.

Carlos Gonzalez and Jose Manuel Grandela both worked at the Fresnedillas de la Oliva tracking station in the Madrid region in the 1960’s.

Both were there during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969 and Gonzalez controlled its communications.

Gonzalez and Grandela both recently attended an event at the Astrobiology Centre in the Madrid region held to mark the premiere of The First Man. The film, starring Ryan Gosling as first man on the Moon Neil Armstrong, dramatises the Apollo 11 mission and is set to be released next year for its 50th anniversary.

Gonzalez said he and Grandela had a privileged position because they could listen to conversations between the Apollo 11 crew and mission control in Houston before anyone else.

Both were the first people to hear Armstrong confirm he and Buzz Aldrin had touched down on the Moon with the words: ‘The eagle has landed.’

Gonzalez said Armstrong wanted to step onto

the Moon no matter what happened and added he remembered an exchange between the astronaut and Houston when told he had to wait.

“I’ve been preparing for this for years, I’ve travelled 400,000 kilometres, I’ve gone down to the Moon with certain difficulties and now you tell me I have to sleep?” Gonzalez remembered Armstrong saying.

“Houston had proposed to abort the mission but Armstrong took semiautomatic control and with Buzz Aldrin giving him altitude and speed data he landed with about 30 seconds’ worth of fuel to spare,” Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez added he also remembered Armstrong asking how he had managed to stumble on his way out of the lunar module despite practising 300 times on Earth.

Grandela, who was 23 at the time, said the mission was an important step in the Space Race between the United States and the Soviet Union.

“The mission unleashed an avalanche of innovations in engineering, informatics, materials and fuels from which all of humanity is benefiting today,” he said.

A SAILING yacht was left precariously perched on the Portixol rocks in Palma de Mallorca following storms which thrashed the island Sunday night.

Two crew members were apparently on board the 32metre Turkish built vessel, Sila Sibiri, and managed to escape safely.

It’s reported that following manoeuvring difficulties in the challenging conditions, the yacht drifted ashore, as it was apparently sitting at anchor.

A NORWEGIAN man, 50, has been accused of raping an 18-year-old student during a trip to Mallorca.

The defendant, who is also the father of another pupil on the excursion, had travelled with the 100strong party as a monitor.

He was imprisoned last Friday by a judge on the island and on Tuesday, paid €9,000 bail to return to Norway. The accused, victim and witnesses, are required to return to Mallorca when a trial date is set.

Community spirit THE storms which hit Mallorca last week forced the Balearic Government to activate its emergency action plan for the first time in 13 years.

Flash floods wreaked havoc in Sant Llorenc and claimed the lives of 13 people.

But community spirit was present in abundance as hundreds of people descended on the area to offer their help in the massive clean-up operation.

The Guardia Civil, representatives from the town hall and Civil Protection were on hand to organise the volume of people along with the scale of the task.

Big screen premieres THE seventh annual Evolution! Mallorca Film Festival will feature a total of 104 films from 23 nationalities, including 42 original productions that premiere in Spain.

Founder and director of the festival, Sandra Seeling Lipski, this week revealed a full programme for the event which takes place from October 25 to 31.

Featured productions include 15 feature films (11 in competition), six documentaries and 83 short projects, made up of narratives, documentaries, music videos and films.

Funded vacations SIX HUNDRED Spanish pensioner holidaymakers arrived at Palma Son Sant Joan Airport on Monday, on state-subsidised holidays.

They are the first group of elderly people this year to benefit from the vacations in Mallorca, operated by Mundiplan, on behalf of the national government’s institute for senior citizens and social services, Imserso.

Some 34 hotels in Mallorca are accommodating the holidaymakers during the out of season months, until the end of April. And further groups of elderly visitors are expected to arrive on the island over the next few months.

The Mallorca Hoteliers Federation said the scheme means jobs can be maintained for 12 months, rather than just for summer, and give a boost to where there are participating hotels. In Mallorca this is predominantly Playa de Palma.

OUR VIEW

Solid as a Rock WHILST the UK continues to be in the midst of internal and external dispute over the increasingly imminent Brexit, spare a thought for the politicians in Gibraltar.

At the end of the day, this tiny enclave at the tip of Spain has a voting population which is half the size of Wimbledon and from a pot of around 30,000 people has to find politicians who are capable of becoming involved in international negotiations.

Happily, it would appear that Chief Minister Fabian Picardo, a barrister and QC is capable of entering this heady atmosphere and with the support of certain of his other ministers - including Deputy Chief Minister Garcia - has walked a difficult tightrope.

Although the Spanish government is in theory committed to Spanish rule over the Rock, the change, firstly of Foreign Minister Margallo (who was a ‘sword rattling’ member of those who claim Gibraltar) and then the return to power of the PSOE Spanish Socialist Party has seen a less aggressive stance against Gibraltar in recent months. It is clear that in financial terms, Gibraltar has an exceptionally strong economy and is said to be the second largest employer of Spanish workers in the Campo de Gibraltar, beaten only by the Government of Andalucia.

Despite all of the hard work that the Gibraltarians may put into the negotiations, at the end of the day, it’s the UK parliament and the remaining 27 member states of the EU who will actually decide the future of this British Overseas Territory.

For what it’s worth however, those born in Gibraltar can currently move to the UK, unlike the citizens of that other territory, Hong Kong which was returned to China.

AID: Cash has been allocated for homeowners who lost everything in the flash floods.

Grants to help rebuild lives ALMOST half of the 300 homes affected by the flash floods in Mallorca last week, which claimed the lives of 13 people, have been totally devastated.

According to the Minister of Social Services and Cooperation, Fina Santiago, properties in Sant Llorenc de Cardassar, Son Servera and Arta, particularly took the brunt of the downpour.

The Official Bulletin for the department of the Balearic Islands announced on Tuesday

that €5,500 of aid for cases of total loss of belongings, and up to €4,000 where losses are partial.

The Ministry has set aside a total of €1.3 million in grant subsidies after a team of more than 30 social workers assessed the needs of the affected residents over the weekend.

The Balearic and state governments have also pledged to help cover ‘basic needs,’ such as chairs, tables, beds, washing machines, refrigerators and heaters.

STRONG and persistent rain with storms are expected to hit the Balearic Islands from today (Thursday) until Sunday, according to a warning issued by the Met Agency.

de Terme, will not be able to exceed 40 kmph.

From there to the Son Berga road (Ma-1040), there will be a 30 kmph limit, and from this point until past the convent of the Sisters of Charity, a limit of 40 kmph will be established.

Additionally, the Cami del Compte will be limited to 30 kmph until it leaves the urban core.

In the new year, nine kilometres of the Esporles road (Ma1040) will be reinforced, and 11 elevated steps installed. The current gutter will become passable on foot.

Ryanair voucher fury A BRITISH woman has declared she will never fly with budget airline Ryanair again after being offered a £3.50 (€4) voucher after extensive delays.

Sheridan Bywater from Jarrow says her Ryanair flight from Tenerife to Newcastle airport was delayed for over 14 hours.

The 53-year-old had enjoyed a week-long trip to the Canary Island of Tenerife when Ryanair strike action left her facing lengthy delays in Spain.

Ryanair grounded 80 flights during their ‘biggest ever strike’ on September 28.

Among the 80 cancelled flights was Sheridan’s 7am flight to Newcastle.

She claims she was offered £3.50 for food while being stuck at Tenerife airport but said the offer was so measly, that she decided against using the voucher.

But a Ryanair spokesperson hit back regarding Ms Bywater’s criticisms claiming all passengers were pre-warned via text message three days prior to flying that there could

Ryanair said: “This customer was contacted by email and SMS text message (September 25) to inform them of potential disruption to this flight from Tenerife to New-

castle (September 28) and offered a free move to another date.

“The flight was regrettably cancelled (on September 28) due to an unnecessary strike by a tiny minority of cabin

crew and affected customers were informed by email and SMS text message and advised of their options of a refund, free move to the next available flight or free transfer to an alternative flight.

“Affected customers were provided with refreshment vouchers and overnight accommodation, including this customer, who chose a refund of her air fare, which was processed. Ryanair sincerely apologised to those customers affected by these unnecessary strikes, which we did our utmost to avoid.”

However, Ms Bywater said she was given just a few hours’ notice: “We got a message at 1am saying the flight was cancelled, three hours notice, so what are you supposed to do?”

Ms Bywater said she was forced to fly to the UK with her sister and brother-in-law after purchasing new tickets with Jet2 to Birmingham, which she claims cost €550.

Fears for expat Riverside camp washed away compiling information from everyone who knew him.

Roger is described as around 1.7 metres tall, with a weather-worn face and a distinctive walk. He has a thin to medium build, graying hair and few if any teeth.

He usually has a bicycle with him.

He was last seen Tuesday, October 9 by the ‘Toblerone’ bridge.

The search for Roger Hanks follows storms and flash floods which struck the south of Spain and the Balearic Islands last week. The floods saw rivers overflow, cars washed away and 13 people killed in Mallorca, including at least two British people.

The search for Hanks and cleanup efforts remain ongoing.

POLICE have continued to search for an elderly British man who has not been seen since a river burst its banks and destroyed his riverside camp in the south of Spain last Tuesday.

Locals said Roger Hanks, 73, is a very private man who lived in a tent alongside the Rio Pereilas, near Coin in Malaga’s Guadalhorce Valley.

He was a well-known figure in the area often doing odd jobs for the locals.

He has not been seen since last Tuesday before the area was hit by severe flooding late in the day and in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

One expat speaking exclusively to the Euro Weekly News said: “It has been horrific in some areas. I have been helping an urbanisation where the ground floor was flooded to ceiling level.

“Roger’s disappearance has been reported to the Guardia Civil who are

Rare artefacts seized FOUR people have been arrested for allegedly being complicit in the plundering of an archaeological site in Spain.

Guardia Civil have recovered 92 rare Celtiberian pieces said to be of ‘great historical value.’ They have been taken to a museum in Burgos to be studied, restored and put on display.

The arrested men and four others investigated are suspected of crimes of damage to archaeological sites, misappropriation and receiving the items illegally.

The investigation began last November after the Nature Protection Service of the Guardia Civil (SEPRONA) detected the sale of several spearheads through specialised internet media sites.

The agents identified and located an advertiser in the town of Burgos, who was found to have a batch of 50 ancient pieces that were taken by police to be studied and catalogued by the Museum of Burgos.

Police then launched Operation ‘Muserola’ to investigate the illegal trade in antiquities in the region.

The aim was to locate the plundered site and identify those responsible and recover the items stolen.

drugs trade with cocaine and precision scales discovered.

Police also found the plunderer who was working a plot of land next to the archaeological site. According to experts, the indications are that the hoard was a votive deposit of arms of Celtiberian origin dating to the 4th century BC. Among the recovered pieces, mostly made of iron, are spear tips, an iron sword, daggers and horse bits.

Tourism official: no-deal Brexit a ‘disaster’

By Joe Gerrard A SENIOR Spanish tourist official has said it would be a disaster for Spain if Britain left the European Union (EU) without a deal next year.

Javier Pinanes, the head of Spain’s London tourism office, said there would be “really big” problems if a no-deal Brexit went ahead including for those travelling between the two countries.

British people would probably opt not to travel to Spain or other countries in the EU if a no-deal meant the introduction of visas, flight changes and health insurance problems.

“For Spain it’s decisive. Britain is our main market.

A no-deal Brexit would be a disaster,” he said.

He added while speaking to members of the British travel industry association ABTA in Sevilla that hotels

particularly on Spain’s coast and its islands were heavily linked to their customers.

“I’m convinced there will be an agreement because it is in the common interest of Britain and the EU. “We received 19 million British people in 2017,” he said. British ambassador to Spain Simon Manley, also at the convention, said Westminster was working “day in, day out,” to secure a deal.

“Spain has got a lot of skin in this game,” he said.

Manley added the British government is advising travel companies and holidaymakers on the consequences of a no-deal Brexit.

“But the British government is also having to prepare for the worst,” he said.

Several EU arrangements such as European Health Insurance and visa-free travel could be disputed or stop all together if Britain leaves the bloc without a deal.

The British government stated last month some flights may also be disrupted because airlines would have to get individual permits to fly between Britain and EU states.

Mark Tanzer said politicians had “argued and dithered” over the withdrawal negotiations.

“The future is unlikely to be a paradise but there’s no reason to believe it will be hell either,” Manley said.

The warning comes as the EU’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier said negotiators were working “day and night” to secure a Brexit deal.

His comments come as an agreement over the status of Northern Ireland and its border with the Republic continues to stall efforts to reach a final agreement.

Britain is due to leave the EU on March 29 2019.

PM agrees budget pact Largest ever minimum wage rise among agreed plans

by Joe Gerrard SPAIN’S Prime Minister has signed an agreement with the leader of his leftist allies in Parliament to include a minimum wage increase and tax hikes in the draft 2019 budget.

Pedro Sanchez and Pablo Iglesias, the head of the anti-austerity Podemos, signed the 50-page document outlining their budget plans at the Prime Minister ’s residence of La Moncloa last Thursday.

The Prime Minister said the budget put the Spanish people at the centre of politics.

“This is our shared goal that we brought into being today. We are working to get other parties to join our agreement for the budget which will expand rights and improve people’s lives,” Sanchez said.

Podemos leader Iglesias said putting people at the centre of politics was not incompatible with financial stability while claiming the plans would leave austerity behind.

The largest ever increase to Spain’s minimum wage is now among the measures set to be put forward for next year’s budget.

The rate would rise from €736 a month to €900 a month, or by 21 per cent, if Parliament backs the plans.

Government spending would rise by an additional €5.1 billion under the plans if passed. Maria Jesus Montero, Spain’s Finance Minister, said the increase would be covered by almost €5.7 billion extra coming into the treasury’s coffers from tax hikes and reforms.

The document itself stated the

spending plans would see an extra almost €2.1 billion spent. Those calculations do not include pension payments and other welfare outgoings.

Ignacio Cosido, a leading spokesperson from the opposition conservative Partido Popular (PP), said the budget would lead Spain to go hungry ‘like Venezula’ in the next few years.

Alberto Nadal, a PP economy spokesperson, said: “The budget contains the used of the next economic crisis and recession for the Spanish economy.”

Additional measures in the plans include spending increases on state housing, extra aid to low income families and a rise of 6.7 per cent on civilian research and development funding.

These would be funded by measures including a 3 per cent tax on digital companies and a 1 per cent equity tax on fortunes of more than €10 million.

Sanchez will now have to court smaller parties in Parliament including Basque and Catalan nationalist groups to get the measures passed.

Flying into trouble COMPETITION regulators have launched a probe into a transatlantic pricing deal between British Airways, Iberia, American Airlines and Finnair.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is investigating a series of commitments made by the quartet to the EU, which allow them to co-operate on pricing, capacity and schedules.

The Atlantic Joint Business Agreement (AJBA) was struck in 2010 to address competition concerns raised

THE Socialist government of Pedro Sanchez has reached an agreement with Podemos about the 2019 budget that includes the minimum wage rising to €900 per month, and increasing minimum pensions by 3 per cent.

The two parties have been in talks since August and are preparing to send their plans to the European Commission.

Currently the minimum wage stands at €735 per month, so a rise to €900 would represent an increase of 22.3 per cent.

Boosting minimum and noncontributory pensions by 3 per cent will cost the government €384 million, while the remaining pensions will go up by 1.6 per cent.

Takes the cake…

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT HAVE to say I was absolutely delighted when an Irish bakery won their Supreme court case this week. The Belfast bakery ‘Ashers’ had objected to the message that gay activist Gareth Lee had requested for a decorated cake.

The message, ‘Support Gay Marriage,’ was considered by the company to be inconsistent with their religious doctrine. They, quite rightly in my opinion, objected to a law that decreed they do something they didn’t believe in. This week the Supreme Court agreed and ruled that the refusal by the bakery to carry out their wishes was not discriminatory and subsequently dismissed the case.

Now before I get deluged with hate mail and messages accusing me of homophobia and Lord knows what else, I am NOT homophobic. I have absolutely nothing against people’s sexual preferences, or indeed anything they have, do not have, or would like to have - either between their legs or their ears.

What I am against is the increasing difficulty the majorities have in standing up for what they believe in. This Christian, heterosexual run establishment, did not agree with the sentiment of the message required by the person who ordered the cake. To my mind, (on one of their own products) they had every right to refuse to advertise something

that went against their opinions.

You can rest assured, that had the boot been on the other foot and a gay activist had owned the bakery, a request to put ‘don’t support gay marriage’ on a product, would have been refused point blank and nothing more would have been heard of

it. But these activists were a minority, weren’t they? Once again, the minority were pandered to by the state.

Although the Christian owners eventually won their case, it’s been through a number of courts, taken four years and cost somewhere around a quarter of a million pounds of taxpayers’ money, plus another £200,000 provided by a Christian trust.

To me, the attitude of the authorities toward majorities has become unacceptable and utterly undemocratic. Minorities are being allowed to run slipshod and virtually unchecked through

our traditions, our culture, our laws and plain old common sense. They have come to realise perfectly well, that all they need to do is scream ‘discrimination’ or ‘offended’ and the authorities will fall over backward to cater to their every whim - however unacceptable or utterly biased against the majority they may be.

The lunatics are indeed taking over the asylum and unless those at the top get their act together and start using some common sense, I see complete disaster looming on an ever-increasing scale. Discrimination; a stifling of free speech, and unfair bias, are completely unacceptable in this day and age.

When they are constantly used against the majority, purely because they happen to be a majority, it can only ultimately lead to a complete disintegration of our society as we know it.

Get a grip. Minority rule belongs in the far reaches of Korea or Corbyn’s beloved leftwing states. We live in a democracy. This week remember to share a prayer or two for those who fought and died that we may enjoy it!

TECH FOR THE TIMID CALL me old-fashioned, but I’ve never seen the attraction of watching the latest blockbuster on a six-inch smartphone screen.

Hey, even just seeing the screen at this stage of my life is tough enough, never mind actually identifying Bruce Willis on it as he saves the world (again).

With ‘content’ hurled at our multitude of devices these days, the trick is getting it onto something which won’t be an optician’s nightmare to watch. Enter the current buzzword: streaming.

There are two basic flavours: either from the internet to your device, or from your device to another device. Let’s tackle the second of these.

How do you get your ‘content’ from, say, your computer, onto your TV screen?

Many new TVs can take USB drives or SD cards directly. If not, the good news is that it’s a doddle with just a cable - as long as your computer is modern enough to have an HDMI socket.

Stream on Cat videos are even finer on a full-sized TV screen, advises Terence Kennedy Most laptops certainly do.

Plug an HDMI cable into your laptop and your TV, choose the input source on your TV (perhaps ‘HDMI 2’), choose the TV in your laptop’s Display settings, and ‘Roberto’s your tio’, (‘Bob’s your uncle’).

Another option is a dedicated mini-PC, some retailing for as little as €100 or so. Retailers are increasingly using these powerful little cubes for their in-store displays, and they’re perfect for streaming audio and video to anything from a computer monitor to a TV or sound system, in stunning quality.

A cheaper alternative to a computer is to buy a dedicated media player or streamer.

The best-known come from Roku, Google, Apple or Amazon, or a Kodi box. Their main party

trick is streaming online content through your Wi-Fi, for a fee, from the likes of Netflix or Hulu.

Most will also play content you already own.

My own favourite gadget for

the job is the simplest addon of all: a no-frills, cheapand-cheerful media player like the dinky one shown here.

Available online for as little as €40, there are dozens of such players to choose from. Often barely the size of a cigarette packet (but happily without the health warning), most will handle virtually any current format you throw at them, either from a USB drive or SD card.

One final option is to ‘tether ’ your smartphone by cable or wirelessly, directly to your TV, ‘mirroring’ its content onto the TV screen.

The bad news: for now this still only works with really, really, really high-end smartphones.

Which can cost more than a whole new media-capable TV and never mind the popcorn.

Is all this fuss Strictly necessary?

TV COUCH CRITIC SO, to answer my own question, no it isn’t necessary. Strictly is a BBC1 weekend staple and it doesn’t need shock-headline-tactics to keep millions of us glued to our TV sets of a Saturday and Sunday. Now I know that Auntie didn’t break the story, but She hasn’t done much to dampen it down either. And whilst I don’t go along with the ‘we’ve all been there, too much to drink …’ spin (maybe I was just brought up right, I haven’t kissed anyone except my other half since we got married). I think the kiss story should just be left alone so we can focus on the dancing.

Katie and Gorka left the show on Sunday, which is a shame. Katie has been wonderful and I think she would have got better and better if she had been able to stay. Oh, and she doesn’t kiss the face off her dancing partner in front of tabloid photographers - sorry, cheap shot. Strictly is back on Saturday evening, BBC1.

Did you watch the Royal Wedding last week? Well, about four million people watched it live and about the same number watched the highlights show later in the day.

‘PENN TO PAPER’ THERE are certain things that ought not to be spoken about in polite society: religion, sex and politics are three. Now add a fourth subject Brexit. Uttering the ‘B’ word at a dinner party is more likely to spoil a social gathering than a vegan with a nut allergy.

Depending on when you read this, the UK is either bracing itself for the so-called ‘People’s Vote’ march in London on Saturday, or it will all be over, and we will know if the estimates of over a million people taking part were accurate.

The event is being billed as the most important protest of a generation and it is predicted that young people will lead the anti-Brexit demonstration. Seventy-three per cent of under 24-year-olds voted to remain at the EU Referendum in 2016 and in the past two years more than 1.4 million people in the UK have reached voting age.

Random Question, have you had any heat on at home yet? I’ve been tempted, but haven’t fired up the wood burner just yet.

Speaking of people who probably have had

the heat on, we weren’t really, but I needed a link, I suspect that Extreme Diet Hotel proprietor Galia Grainger has had the heating going for weeks, there is nothing of her! The Diet Hotel is a Channel 4 offering which I stumbled across on ALL4. Galia charges guests £1,200 per week to live on 450 calories a day, that’s about two G&Ts I think, and she treats the weight-shedders like rubbish.

She is one of those people who either

doesn’t gain weight or simply doesn’t eat either way it makes her nasty to her guests and very opinionated. Some of the personal stories are nice to follow, so it’s worth a look if you find yourself with a massive pizza, lots of chocolates and some good friends to shout at the TV with.

ITV are trying to counter the obvious appeal of BBC1’s Sunday night offering The Cry, with a drama about a couple who get back together when their 11-year-old son Max identifies as a girl. Butterfly started last Sunday and the keyboard warriors have been furiously typing their thoughts ever since.

Callum Booth-Ford is brilliantly cast as Max, treading a minefield of bullying, schoolwork and coming to terms with her identity. Anna Friel and Emmet J Scanlan are Mum and Dad, Vicky and Stephen and Millie Gibson is sister Lily. Anna is marvellous, Emmet plays Dad brilliantly and Millie is fantastic. Of course the topic will alienate some, will no doubt draw comment from Leapy and will leave most of us open mouthed. A brave choice for prime time Sunday evening, but as a conversation starter, it is a winner. Butterfly continues on ITV, Sunday evening.

Don’t mention the ‘b’ word

BREXIT: A decision which has divided the country. two years these two factors alone would be sufficient to ensure any future vote would result in a comfortable Remain victory. That is before you factor in the 13 million abstainers or the people who now realise that the ‘Big Red Bus’ promises were actually big fat lies.

My mother voted to leave the EU

in 2016. She is 87 years old and has never travelled beyond Liverpool and yet her vote contributed to a situation which will affect me as I travel to and from Mallorca (ironically to visit her) and those 1.4 million millennials for decades to come.

Being too young to remember the US University protests of the late

60’s, Tiananmen Square or the Velvet Revolution the youth of today may be unaware of the latent power that they possess. The ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement and ‘March for Our Lives ‘ (students against gun crime in the US) are more recent reminders that when young people speak loud enough older politicians have no

choice but to listen.

Brexit, and in particular a no-deal Brexit, will affect young people in terms of travel, study and inflation.

There is a new phenomenon called ‘Brexiety’ with 47 per cent of youngsters claiming to be anxious about the future.

The period before the 2016 EU referendum is known as ‘BB’ - ‘Before Brexit.’ It was a simpler time when Pharrell Williams’ ‘Happy’ made us feel good and people were too busy nominating each other for the Ice Bucket Challenge to seriously worry about politics. Boy, how we have all grown up since then.

Now the future could be decided by the next generation who will be most affected by it. But will a generation who has been taxied to school every morning bother to walk in protest? We can but hope, for all our sakes, that they do.

There’s been a heatwave too, exacerbated by the hot, sandy African calima wind, which brought with it three pateras (small migrant boats, or in today’s sad terminology, illegal immigrants) to Caletón Blanca in Lanzarote and Mogán in Gran Canaria.

Of the 42 migrants, 17 are minors and go straight into the care of island Cabildos. The rest will eventually get sent back, despite all the risk and the money paid to patera owners, who are guilty of charging extortion-

At 9.15 at night as I was passing the salt lakes at Santa Pola, a car was parked by the old tower without any headlights on. As I passed he pulled out and sat very close to my bumper, only using his headlights to flash me, which he did constantly.

He only used his headlights to flash me, all the rest of the time his car was in darkness, and I was unable to determine the make of car or his registration number. On the single lane part of the road he continuously tried to overtake me on the wrong side of the road, ie on the curb side rather than the overtaking lane.

I must admit I have heard of the means used by the local highway robbers and the behaviour of this driver was exactly the same as that recorded previously in the local press. Each time he tried to get in front of me, I admit that I put my foot down to prevent him getting in front of me and cutting me up, or forcing me to stop. I had determined to go to the police at Guardamar, but when we reached the lit section of

A bit of what you love The scientists are now suggesting dairy products shouldn’t be discouraged, as they are on some diets, and that we should be doing more research into their possible health benefits.

The comprehensive study involved results from more than 63,600 adults over the course of 20 years from 16 different research projects.

The participants were all measured for dairy-fat markers - ones which show how much dairy has been consumed in the body - before the study began.

All participants were free from

type 2 diabetes when the studies began, although by the time of the follow-up, more than 15,100 had developed the disease.

At the end of the research, scientists found those with higher levels of dairy-fat markers had a 30 per cent lower risk of type 2 diabetes.

The study’s lead author, Dr Fumiaki Imamura from the Medical Research Council Epidemiology Unit at the University of Cambridge, explained, “our results provide the most comprehensive global evidence to date about dairy fat biomarkers and their relationship with lower risk of type 2 diabetes.”

He added, “we’re aware that our biomarker work has limitations and requires further research on underlying mechanisms, but at the very least, the available evidence about dairy fat does not indicate any increased risk for the development of type 2 diabetes.”

THE Film Symphony Orchestra which comes from the Czech Republic is known for the work that it does in taking music from the movies to stage and is particularly popular in Spain.

Nick Horne The Rich Pick Freelance correspondent, London, England AN auction in Hong Kong during April saw competitive bidding drive the valuation of a Famille-Rose porcelain bowl to €24.7 million.

It’s happened again. At a Sotheby’s auction in Hong Kong on October 3, 2018 the Yamanaka Reticulated Vase recently discovered in a Private Japanese Collection sold for €19,749,200 (US$19,009,102 or £14,637,024) almost three times its pre-sale estimate of €5.6 - 7.7 million or US$6.4-8.9 million. Bidding opened at HK 40 million (€4.4 million) and rose steadily as five bidders competed for the vase.

The Yamanaka is a pair to the famed Bainbridge Vase which hit global headlines when it sold in the UK in 2010. This example had remained dormant and unknown to the wider world, having been in Japan for almost a century since its acquisition in 1924 following a public showing with Yamanaka in New York in 1905.

The vase is carved and exquisitely painted with four pairs of fish below Rococo-inspired motifs on a yellow sgraffiato ground. Sgraffiato is a technical term used to describe the application to an unfired ceramic body of two successive layers of contrasting slip or glaze, and then ‘scratching’ so as to reveal parts of the underlying layer.

Unassuming in its beauty, the bowl is exquisitely enamelled on the exterior with an intricate design of poppies issuing from rockwork, with a butterfly depicted fluttering gracefully overhead, a 14character poem, and the interior with finger-citron, apple and cherries.

Some of the most valuable and valued objects are diminutive, rare and exquisite.

Most expensive is rich man’s playground Monaco where a similar sized property costs an average €5.3 million – nine times more than the Spanish average.

London prices skew the figures for the UK, where the average cost is €23,932 per sqm, which translates to €2.8 million for that 120 sqm home.

Next on the list is France with a price tag of €12,796 per sqm in big cities, or €1.5 million for a 120 sqm property.

Complete the top 10 of the list are Russia (€1.42 million), Austria (€1.38 million), Switzerland (€1.37 million), Norway (€993,720) Sweden (€838,920), Holland (€828,240) and Finland (€793,080).

Grow your own garlic GREAT for killing off bacteria, warding off coughs and keeping your heart healthy, garlic is also a great flavour enhancing cooking ingredient.

So what could be more satisfying than preparing your favourite dishes using your own home-grown garlic.

As well as being cheap and fun, it’s easy to do, even if you’re not particularly green fingered.

Garlic, ‘allium sativum’, is a member of the onion family, together with leeks and shallots, but instead of one bulb, it produces around a dozen small cloves. These are surrounded by a flimsy, papery skin, and each one is a seed.

The best way to get good garlic bulbs is to grow lots of leaves before bulb development, and the trick is in the timing.

Garlic isn’t particular and can be planted in late autumn or early spring, but it is better later in the year, providing the winter is not too severe.

It needs to go through a cold spell

SIMPLE: Harvesting your own garlic is easy and satisfying. if the head is to develop well, so November is ideal.

Remove gently with a fork, remove excess soil and leave them somewhere dry until the skin becomes papery.

Mature bulbs are best stored in a cool, dry place, but not a refrigerator, as they will begin to sprout.

Personalised bursts Wrap the cylinder with the rope, gluing as you go, leave to dry and hey presto. Fill with fresh or plastic flowers for a personal look.

Decorate or paint the can, fill with flowers and hang on an angle from a hook.

‘HOTELS and restaurants are trying to cheat their way to the top of TripAdvisor amid claims that as many as a third of the reviews are fake,’ according to a recent undercover investigation.

Independent analysis of tens of thousands of reviews on TripAdvisor reportedly demonstrates that supposedly top-rated B&Bs at tourist hotspots, for instance, have almost twice as many ‘fake’ reviews as lower-ranked accommodation. Two thirds of reviews posted about top B&Bs in some hotspots are thought to be fishy.

Add to this a recent landmark legal ruling in Italy that saw one fraudulent online reviewer sentenced to jail after the court ruled that writing fake, paid-for reviews under a false identity was ‘criminal conduct’ in the first convicted case of ‘review fraud’.

TripAdvisor is a site that encapsulates the internet conundrum. Its benefits to the paying public are obvious but its misuse can threaten or even wipe out good, honest, small businesses.

My take is that TripAdvisor is a useful tool. But obviously it’s only as good as the

Don’t be fooled by fake reviews

FAKE REVIEWS?: There are growing concerns about the authenticity of some reviews. reviewers. As a general principle I tend to ignore any review by those who have only posted one review. There’s a surprising number of these, and they’re invariably completely glowing or completely doom and gloom - and probably either fake or by someone who doesn’t get out enough.

(Conversely, if the reviewer has 10+ reviews across a range of star ratings, I’m inclined to listen to what they say.)

I’ve come across daft mistakes such as

confusion over similar-sounding hotel names or same name, different locations.

Sometimes a fake review stands out because the standard of English is so poor that the author obviously isn’t Janet or John from Bognor!

But it would help if TripAdvisor made greater efforts to weed out fakes and ensure that the reviewer is genuinely ‘genuine’.

So we have fake news and fake reviews - what’s next, fake columnists?

I have an apartment in Port Pollensa in Mallorca. Our community has two blocks of three floors each. I live on the middle floor. Below me is a woman who is a tenant, not an owner. Over the past few years she has been feeding feral cats. At first it was about five. Then with new kittens it was 12. The issue was brought up at the AGM and she said she would deal with it. But they increased! At the last AGM she said she would neuter them. More kittens then appeared. It smells terrible in hot weather and the land around us is filled with cat urine and faeces.

Sorry, back to the phone. I decided to go and check it out. I went to the local Vodafone store.

Now, I have been with them for years and years - probably over 14 in fact - when it was Airtel so overall I am pretty satisfied with them. I spoke to the sales assistant in the store and asked if he had one in stock which he did.

He explained that it was €1,200 for the top model but it could be paid for in instalments if I sign a new contract for two years.

I don’t have a contract at the moment but I said, ‘OK, that’s doable - can I see one please?’

He replied, ‘No, I can show you one in a box but you can’t take it out as I can’t take the plastic cover off the box.’ ‘Don’t you have a display model?’ ‘No.’ ‘So I am meant to buy a phone and sign a two-year contract without being able

to handle the actual product I’m buying?’

It’s pretty unbelievable because once I sign I’m committed. Yes, I could go to the Apple store and no doubt see one live but how stupid not to have one in every store. I didn’t buy one.

Something interesting I have noticed is that so many of the top companies now don’t actually make anything. Facebook, Amazon, Uber etc have taken over from so many of the manufacturing companies.

In fact 10 or 15 years ago most didn’t even exist. The majority are all online controlled.

Bricks and mortar companies are getting smashed to pieces by these tech created companies and, on top of that, is the danger involved.

I mean, this week it was announced that 50 million Facebook accounts had been compromised. Fifty million!!! Will they get sued or fined? I read about the hacking but have seen nothing following it up. Facebook was started by a university geek with the sole purpose of picking up girls and now it is one of the most powerful companies in the world. That cannot be right.

How about this - instead of testing products on animals, how about testing them on people that don’t say thank you after you hold the door open for them? Or after you let them out in traffic? How hard is it to say thank you or just raise your hand in acknowledgement? mikesenker@gmail.com

dogs do some of these things, such as detecting mines and drugs. Intelligence is not an important factor in a dog’s make up.

It is a fact that nearly all ‘problem’ dogs are very intelligent and certainly a fact that few dog owners understand canine instincts and their importance in the man/dog relationship.

Dogs and indeed all animals learn by association of ideas. Animals do not reason at all, they simply react to what is happening and do not think what has happened or is about to happen. It is believed that they do sometimes work out a problem for themselves.

For training purposes we try to create associations that we want, and avoid those we do not want by what is known as correction and reward. Correction does not mean beating the dog or jerking him on a choke chain, it means any act which forces the dog to obey, like pushing him into the sit position.

Many dog owners will never know or have any idea of the pleasure they are losing in not having a dog that is trained to be a faithful companion and partner.

A dog will accept a human substitute for a canine leader and this willingness to accept a human makes him easier to train than most other animals.

Farewell to a successful Barcelona Boat Show THE Barcelona Boat Show which closed its doors last Sunday is a good indicator of the strength of the boating scene across Spain and the organisers have said that there was a general feeling of optimism among exhibitors and visitors.

Overall, it is not a car that your parents are going to like, but that is surely part of its appeal.

MICK SCHUMACHER, the son of seven-time Formula 1 world champion Michael, won the Formula 3 European title with a race to spare.

The 19-year-old finished second in race two of the season finale in Hockenheim, Germany, to establish an unassailable lead in the drivers’ standings.

In Sunday’s race three, Prema driver Schumacher

finished second again for his 14th podium of the season.

“I am absolutely delighted,” German Schumacher said.

“What this team has achieved over the last year is unbelievable.”

Schumacher had failed to score in the opening race in Hockenheim following a first-lap collision, but held a

49 point advantage going into the final round in Germany.

Motopark driver Juri Vips won race two from pole position, and with Dan Ticktum coming home in seventh, Schumacher’s second-place finish was enough to seal championship victory.

Pepperell is British Master ENGLAND’S Eddie Pepperell won his second European Tour title with a twoshot victory at the British Masters.

The 27-year-old took a three-shot lead into the final day at Walton Heath, and closed out the win by carding a level-par 72 to finish on nine under.

Victory means Pepperell, who also won the Qatar Masters in February, will break into the world’s top 35 for the first time.

“I am over the moon,” he said.

“I did not sleep well the last two nights. It was hard to keep my mind on the golf because I was leading all week.”
