‘Ready’ for hacks Robles says Spain can face potential cyber strikes

By Joe Gerrard SPAIN’S Defence Minister has said the country is prepared for potential cyber attacks after British and Dutch authorities alleged Russia’s military intelligence services were behind a series of global strikes.

Margarita Robles told a press conference following a meeting with NATO Defence Ministers the country is braced for ‘very real’ threats.

Spain had put all necessary measures in place to protect its cyberspace and its citizens should not be alarmed, the minister added.

Robles’ comments follow claims made by Britain’s Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt that Russia’s GRU was behind strikes on the World Anti-Doping Agency, the Democratic

National Committee and other organisations.

It also comes as the Netherland’s Defence Ministry claimed it had foiled an attempted cyber attack on the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) headquarters in The

Hague.

Russia has denied any involvement in the incidents and called the accusations a ‘diabolical cocktail.’ There was no evidence to back up the claims from Britain and the Netherlands, a Kremlin spokesperson added.

Robles said Spain had to be prepared in the face of threats of political interference, cyber attacks and ‘hybrid’ strikes.

“Citizens have to be calm and to know that we are ready.

But we will not abandon the channels of dialogue,” Robles said.

The minister added it was ‘essential’ there were joint defence mechanisms both within NATO and the European Union (EU).

“Spain is a reliable and serious NATO partner and we are committed to working on our

James Mattis, the United States’ Secretary of Defence, said last Thursday his country had given its offensive cyber

capabilities to NATO countries.

He added that Russia would ‘pay’ for its actions, but did not outline a specific response.

Robles said Spain had to be ‘very cautious’ in choosing how to respond if it should fall victim to such a strike.

SPAIN is gearing up to mark its National Festival tomorrow (Friday), a celebration with a long history and global reach.

This official photo from the Spanish Army shows troops taking part in military parades in the capital of Madrid to mark the day which takes place every October 12.

The marches are presided over by the Spanish King and other members of the royal family, as well as leading government figures such as

the Prime Minister. It also features flyovers from the Patrulla Aguila, the Spanish Air Force’s aerobatics team.

The practice of staging parades began in 2000 when October 12 was also designated Armed Forces Day. The National Festival of Spain (Fiesta Nacional de España) goes deeper than celebrations of the armed forces. It also commemorates Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the Americas in 1492. The occasion

is celebrated across the world by Spanish speakers and those whose ancestors lived in the country as Hispanic Day. The celebration was first pushed for in the early 20th century with calls to recognise the ‘Haspanidad,’ or global Spanish-speaking community. The celebration fell in and out of favour during the Civil War and the dictatorship of Francisco Franco until it was officially recognised as a national holiday in the 1980’s.

Fatal figures MORE than half the deaths on the roads in the Balearic Islands are cyclists, pedestrians and motorcyclists, who were involved in more than 14,000 traffic accidents in the last 10 years.

Of these incidents, 65 per cent related to crashes involving motorbikes, 21 per cent to pedestrians and 14 per cent to cyclists, according to a study by the Linea Direct Foundation and Centro Zaragoza.

The research has created an accident rate in Spain per 100,000 in-

habitants, which has placed the national average at 773 accidents.

However, the figures for the Balearic Islands stands at 1,287 per 100,000, among the highest by autonomous communities, recording more accidents by ratio along with Cataluña and Madrid.

Since 2012, the mortality rate of ‘weaker’ or ‘more vulnerable’ road users, has increased by 6 per cent and accounts for 47 per cent of those killed in traffic accidents in Spain.

RANKING HIGH: Thousands of women have protested in favour of gender equality this year.

Female friendly SPAIN has come fifth in a ranking of countries where women feel secure, respected, equal and unthreatened.

The University of Georgetown’s Institute for Women, Peace and Security’s study named Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Slovenia and Spain the most female friendly countries. Yemen, Syria and Afghanistan came bottom in the ranking of a total of 153 states.

The report comes after Spanish politicians promised progress on gender equality amidst protests against sexism and gender violence this year.

The university’s study took into account cases of gender violence, the representation of women in parliament, safety and legal systems. Spain ranked highly in almost all the categories.

The country came 11th in gender violence rankings with the study finding that 13 per cent of Spanish women had experienced some form of sexist attack in their lifetimes.

More than 80 per cent of Spanish women surveyed said they felt secure, with the report’s authors commenting the metric measured feelings of security and not freedom.

Spain came 20th in terms of women participat-

ing in politics. Female members of the Cortes Generales, the country’s Parliament, make up 39 per cent of the total number of lawmakers.

Spain topped the ranking of equality in its legal system with the least amount of discriminatory laws on its books.

The study follows protests over alleged sexism in Spanish society this year as well as pledges from politicians to make the country more gender equal.

Millions took part in the feminist general strike on International Women’s Day on March 8 over claims they continued to face sexism and discrimination in the workplace and wider society.

Thousands more rallied after a Navarra court cleared five men of rape charges in connection with a sex attack on a woman at Pamplona’s Running of the Bulls festival.

They were found guilty of the lesser charge of sexual assault in what became known as the La Manada (Wolfpack) case.

Pedro Sanchez, Spain’s Prime Minister, has committed his left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) government to promoting female equality.

There are 11 women in Spain’s 17-strong Council of Ministers, a move designed to make the government more gender equal.

‘Looky looky’ man floors tourist A SHOCKING video of a tourist in Spain arguing with a ‘looky looky’ man, before being punched to the head and left lying motionless on the pavement has surfaced.

The violent footage was apparently shot on the Spanish holiday island of Mallorca and posted to the Facebook group Cleaning up Magaluf - claiming ‘What you witness here is the looky looky stole this man’s necklace and he is trying to get it back.’

Airline Brexit worry

TRAVEL COMPANY: Has changed its terms and conditions.

THOMAS COOK will not be awarding British tourists compensation or expenses if their flights are grounded as a result of a no-deal Brexit.

A specialist in package holidays, the airline and travel company changed its terms and conditions in light of the risk of the UK leaving the EU without a deal, including on aviation.

Based in Manchester, Thomas Cook has designated a no-deal Brexit as being the

equivalent of other situations it cannot control ie civil unrest or events arising out of political instability.

The alteration means that the company is not obliged to pay compensation, but it will continue to refund the cost of any cancelled flights.

Last week, the European Commission president, JeanClaude Juncker, confirmed that “if everything goes wrong… British planes will not be able to land on the Eu-

ropean continent.”

EU-issued aviation licences would be invalid in the case of a no deal, potentially causing widespread disruption.

However, asked whether its customers could be stranded on the continent by the cancellation of flights, a spokesman said: “If a customer was on a holiday with Thomas Cook, we would ensure we would get them home as we do with all the holidays we sell.”

Firefighters hurt The Consell de Mallorca said the incident happened on the MA3433 road at kilometre three and said the two injured firefighters were wearing seatbelts.

TWO firefighters were injured after their vehicle overturned on its way to deal with an emergency call.

A third person who went to their help also needed medical assistance after the accident on the road from Alcúdia to Sa Pobla in s’Albufera on the Spanish island of Mallorca.

Despite the spectacular nature of the accident, the three injured have been diagnosed with minor injuries.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

INITIATIVE: Town hall wants to drive Inca’s economy forward.

Mayor Virgilio Moreno has revealed the town hall’s ‘special plans for the area’ have been drawn up, with the aim of increasing tourism and enhancing facilities for locals.

Usi ng t he r edevel opm ent of Al cudi a’s ol d town as a model, it is believed the recovery of the historic centre would drive t he t own’s econom y forward.

The local authority wants to source ‘strong public and private investment which will focus on an improvement to the streets and general urban environment, accompanied by private investment for improving properties.’

One ar ea whi ch has been earmarked a priority, i s t he Jewi sh quar t er whi ch ar chi t ect s agr ee should have a better connection with the centre.

Thi s woul d i nvol ve pulling down the covered market’s wall, which separates the two zones at present, a move that would cost around €750,000.

The project would also involve burying unsightly electricity and telecommuni cat i ons cabl es whi ch currently hang from buildings.

The town hall has set a budget of €818,000 f or this work.

New signs at Inca’s entry and exit points are also on the agenda.

Opera star THE Musica Mallorca Festival will pay homage to opera diva Montserrat Caballe, whose funeral took place this week, by dedicating its live gala opera at the Palma Auditorium to the 85 year-old who performed there on six occasions.

Coffee and hair cuts MALLORCA 41 recently held their Club Coffee Morning and Bakeoff with nearly 200 eager coffee drinkers and cake eaters coming to the morning at Mood Beach.

With coffee and the facilities all provided by Mood they were able to raise just over €2,400 for local cancer charities.

This was their sixth and most successful coffee morning, originally run in conjunction with the UK’s Macmillan Cancer Society, but now devoted to purely local charities.

Cakes were judged by British Vice-Consul Lucy Gorman, Rotary Chairman Jan Seigl and Patti Whitmore with winners in five categories receiving certificates and prizes of meals kindly donated by local restaurants.

Guests were entertained by the very popular Izzy Newman and a highlight of the morning was a charity head shave of club member Ivan Lythgoe by club member Peter ‘the perm’ Williams.

According to a Spanish i nt er i or m i ni st r y spokesm an, 7,000 chi l d migrants have arrived to Spain from Morocco without parents or guardians.

Thr ee t housand ot her unaccompanied children from other African nations have ar r i ved t o Spani sh territories, making 10,000 in total.

The issue was recently on the table at a bilateral m eet i ng bet ween Spai n and Morocco in Essaouira on the Moroccan coast.

Spai n’s secr et ar y of state for migration, Consuel o Rum i cl ai m s he ‘perceived a willingness’ on the part of Morocco to

take unaccompanied Moroccan minors back in.

The m i gr ant chi l dr en will, however, continue living in Spain until an off i ci al agr eem ent is reached: “Ther e i s no concr et e plan yet, this is part of negotiations, of a diplomatic process,” added Rumi.

The 10,000 unaccompanied child migrants that have arrived to Spain have been placed under the prot ect i on of t he r egi ons where they originally arrived.

This has caused a disproportionate amount of the migrants falling under the protection of Andalucia and Spain’s southern coast as wel l as Spai n’s Af r i can encl aves Ceut a and Melilla.

Robin Walker ’s trip included talks with members of the Brexpats in Spain, Bremain in Spain, EuroCitizens and ECREU groups at the B r i t i sh E m b a s s y in th e Spanish capital.

Issues including health and social care for expatriates in light of Britain’s withdrawal from the EU in March 2019 were discussed.

There were also talks on outreach and communications with Walker and Embassy officials.

The aim of the meetings was to provide the groups with updates on ongoing Brexit negotiations as well as an insight into Britain’s diplomatic work in Spain, its embassy said.

Walker said he was pleased to meet with the representatives and update them on what the government was doing to safeguard their rights.

The meetings follow comments from the president of Brexpats in Spain, Anne Hernandez, claiming the patience of her and her group’s m em ber s was r unni ng out over Brexit.

“Theresa May’s failure to mention expatriates in her statements has show how little we matter to her,” Hernandez said.

By Tara Rippin THE family of Spanish dictator Francisco Franco, want him to be buried with full ‘military honours’ if his remains are exhumed. His seven grandchildren have filed a petition with the Ombudsman’s Office to stop the removal of Franco’s body from the Valley of the Fallen monument, a move which has been approved by the Spanish Congress.

But if the plans go ahead, the dictator’s family want him to be buried inside La Almudena Cathedral in the centre of

Madrid.

His relations have reportedly argued that under a 2010 decree, Franco is entitled to a military funeral with the ‘complete national anthem, volley shots and a cannon gun salute.’

The decree states that this type of ceremony is granted to the Spanish king, the royal family, the prime minister, the defence minister, chief staffs of the forces, as well as general officers of the army, navy and air force.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez pledged that Franco’s remains will be exhumed to

strip him of his privileged position at the monument, but that it will be done with ‘dignity and respect.’

He made no mention of an honorary funeral, which would defeat the purpose of removing his remains from the site where more than 33,000 victims of the Spanish Civil War are buried, without marked graves.

The Franco family has a crypt at the cathedral which contains the remains of Franco’s daughter, Carmen Franco, as well as a vault at El Pardo cemetery, where his wife Carmen Polo is buried.

Tougher taxes SPAIN’S Finance Minister, Maria Jesus Montero, has announced that she wants to tax collaborative economy companies more, especially those involved in ‘rentals and transport’ like Uber and Airbnb.

Ms Montero said that such companies do not pay the appropriate amount of tax for their revenues, and that the situation is creating unfair competition against more traditional services.

She added that the Treasury plans to impose a minimum rate of 15 per cent of corporation tax on large companies.

Young people bank on digital YOUNG people aged between 18 and 35 years old make 80 per cent of payments via their bank cards, and only 20 per cent in cash according to research from BBVA Data & Analytics.

This ratio is even higher i n l a rg e c i t i e s , w h e r e t h e average number of transactions made by card has risen by 170 per cent over the last three years.

Millennials make 44 per cent fewer withdrawals than the average Spanish person, while those over 60 are 33 per cent above the average.

Card transactions have increased by 136 per cent in Barcelona since 2015, and by 103 per cent in Madrid.

By contrast, payments by card only represented 45.6 per cent of the total in Melilla, 40.8 per cent in

EU banks on the future SPANISH banks are anticipating a regulatory change by the European Union that will allow them (and other European banks) to stop accounting for their investment in digital technology as costs.

This will mean that they will no longer have to deduct this expenditure from the tier one capital ratio.

According to an internal document from one of the Spanish banks, European officials have reached an agreement to ensure that future investments in FinTech will not adversely affect solvency calculations.

The same document highlights that the European Banking Authority (EBA) should develop new technical standards to establish what can be considered digital software.

Despite the reaching of this agreement in principle, the timescale to introduce it has not yet been clarified.

Deloitte’s analysts have estimated that the new banking legislative package could be introduced in the second half of 2019.

Banking bosses have been working for years to convince the European authorities to implement this change.

European banks spend more than €18 million on FinTech, and this is expected to rise to €50 million in the near future.

I’m offended that you’re offended LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I DUNNO, it really does appear that in this day and age you can pick up any old rock and discover some ‘offended’ creep skulking under there somewhere.

This week was a real humdinger. The left wing (natch!) National Union of Students, (natch again!), have decided that public hand clapping, whooping and cheering should be banned as they consider it ‘offensive to deaf people’! You really couldn’t make it up.

Do these young idiots ever do any actual studying? Do they ever get their heads down and use their free libraries and state financed education establishments (which many a third world student would give their eye teeth for) to create a little brain power?

Or are their days spent in cuckoo land, dreaming up any lunatic scheme or idea, merely to give themselves an excuse for existing?

Apparently, their alternative suggestion to applause, is the use of ‘Jazz Hands.’ This entails raising the arms and enthusiastically waggling the hands and fingers. (Think Black and White Minstrel Show.) ‘Er, hold on a minute, no noise? Wouldn’t that be offensive to blind people? You see, all this PC

APPLAUSE: Is this really offensive? and ‘offended’ clap trap actually has no end.

It simply goes on and on. I may be offended by deaf people communicating by sign language because it doesn’t include me!

Or upset because pigs have been excluded from my school books, (yep!). There are billions of people on earth; whatever your opinions you’re bound to offend someone.

Did you know that some people are offended by the use of the expression ‘rule of thumb?’

This is because the thumb was originally in-

troduced to measure the thickness of the stick you could use to beat the wife!

Just to get back briefly to the student ‘clapping’ opposition, I think I’ve solved it.

Passing wind would take care of it. An appreciative audience, in a communal coordinated gas release, would satisfy everyone.

Deaf, blind, dumb, physically impaired. All would benefit.

There’s one for your pathetic student union to contemplate, when it next engages

in the pea brained activity it laughingly calls ‘educated debate.’

Oh, and while you’re about it, when you come to the question of a second Brexit referendum, which no doubt has been supported at many a gathering of your laughable leftist liaisons, what if a second vote yielded the same leave result? Any plans for that?

‘Course not. With the ignorance of the young, you’re all far too arrogant to admit you may get something wrong. It’s time our next generation started to talk of WHEN we leave. Not IF! Now that would be a constructive use of taxpayer’s money.

I’ll leave all our young time-wasters with a motif for their new t-shirts.

TECH FOR THE TIMID CHIPS may be smart, but are we, the users?

In an era which is definitely higher tech than many of us are, take my neighbour ’s fancy new phone.

Please. He happily downloads all sorts of goodies on it, then can’t find the downloads and constantly has to ask me.

A recent survey found that most people barely use 10 per cent of their computers’ features or abilities.

Many smartphone users have no idea how to access their phone’s settings, let alone change them.

That sounds about right. Back in the old days of video recorders my partner never managed to get the thing to do anything more sophisticated than wipe my favourite movie, or record 240 minutes of snow.

For those who spent the 70’s learning to master Tippex on typewriters, technophobia has become a contemporary affliction right up there with eating disorders, gadgetdriven sleep deprivation and unintentional suicide-by-selfie.

Everything you buy is loaded to the chips with features. A feature is often something that you do not want, do not want to pay extra for, will never use, but cannot get the thing you do want without.

Our new TV has a control panel which would shame a 747, a remote zapper looking like a small computer, a manual which has done serious damage to a Brazilian rain forest, and the ability to screen two programmes at once. Umm, why? Is there any consumer out there plain schizoid enough to want to watch two programmes at once?

My long-suffering partner hasn’t even managed to get one programme on the darn thing yet, but give her time; she’s only on page 28 of the manual: ‘Taking the set out of the box.’

Finding help THE quickest way to solve a technical problem is to ask the nearest six-year-old.

Seriously though, living in the 21st century and not knowing how to tweet or send an e-mail feels overwhelming.

There’s an app for that, he said, then ducked.

Technophobes are not alone. The internet is awash with dummies-type books, courses and self-help texts to help the technically-challenged, and some really do start at ‘Step One: switch on.’

Type ‘Smartphones for seniors’ into Google and you’ll be deluged with four million hits. ‘Learn Microsoft Office’ produced a breathtaking 315 million results last time I tried. ‘How to e-mail’: 11 billion hits!

Or just ask a neighbour. As long as it’s not me. From now on, like Manuel in Fawlty Towers, ‘I know nuuuthing!’

LAURA PENN ‘PENN TO PAPER’ THIS question came from a Millennial. I could have explained that, at 68 years old, Stevie is still on the planet, performing and quite possibly procreating his 10th baby with his latest wife, but I took the easier option and told her to Google the answer.

If you were born post-1990 get ready to Google some more stuff.

In the mid-80’s I bought a Sony Walkman, (Google) one of the first devices that allowed people to listen to music on the move. I was a broadcaster at a very successful UK radio station at the time and dire predictions circulated that this innovation meant that it would be the end of radio and we ought to all think about changing profession.

Over the past 35 years I have heard the same doom-laden predictions about radio and yet the popularity of listening to the radio remains stubbornly resistant to change.

Radio presenting consists of sitting in a lead-lined room on your own, talking to yourself for hours. All that is missing is the straight-jacket! Yet

people who do it (and I include myself) absolutely love it to the point of obsession. Okay maybe I don’t include myself in the ‘obsession’ bit as I have also always worked in television and therefore have other outlets for my insatiable ego. But there is something about getting behind a microphone and spending time with your listener that is recognisably addictive.

Radio as a medium works best when it offers the listener something that he or she can’t get anywhere else. Last weekend I was travelling but desperate to hear how the drama of the Ryder Cup was unfolding, with no access to Sky TV, I turned to my old friend radio for coverage and it was truly exciting to listen to the final stages of play - as they say, radio makes the best pictures.

When I started the first English radio station on Mallorca I was convinced that people would listen because I knew it could offer something that people living on the island really wanted: local information. Although we were speaking English we be-

came aware that many of our listeners were not from England. We had people of all nationalities tuning in, the one thing that we all had in common was Mallorca.

One of the reasons that I am so happy to be back broadcasting to the island on Mallorca Sunshine Radio is that it is international radio for international people. If I look around the office I can see a Spaniard, a Croat, a German and a Geordie.

This station does what it says on the tin as we don’t care where your ears started off in the world, as long as you bring them to the party. Mallorca Sunshine Radio is continuing to change and grow in line with its listeners and provide radio that is relevant to a wide range of listeners.

Much like Stevie Wonder and Mark Twain, the reports of the death of radio have been much exaggerated.

She should suffer imprisonment of at least three months or more. She is also barred from working with dogs, not barred from keeping them!!

As long as she is not caught, she will probably do exactly the same to some other poor animals. She has received no punishment at all. Laughable, if it was not so sad.

HEARING: EU investigating Monte Pego problem.

When this involves the sewage system for 1,500 dwellings, the problems can rapidly become serious.

For the residents of the beautiful urbanisation of Monte Pego, on the Costa Blanca, they did.

For many years the water discharged from the sewage treatment plant had not been properly treated and Pego Town Hall paid large fines for the pollution. By 2017 this pollution had become almost raw sewage, as confirmed by laboratory tests arranged by the Residents

Association, Pro Monte Pego (PMP).

Something had to be done. The town hall still refused to act, even though the large Marjal Natural Park and rice fields stand directly in the line of the pollution.

In order to protect the urbanisation, the stunning Natural Park’s flora and fauna, and the good name of the area, the bold decision was taken in the summer of 2017 to petition the EU Parliament. It took courage, but the cause was just, the rewards potentially enormous. Political pressure from the EU could unlock the stalemate.

To the great delight of the PMP Association the EU Petitions Committee accepted the submission - a triumph in itself - and over the last six months evidence has been gathered and shared with the EU. Now the exciting news has arrived that members of PMP have been invited to Brussels to appear before the committee, and hear their verdict.

If the EU supports the petition, then the political pressure on the town hall and other authorities will be of huge help, and of course, vindication for the courage to stand up for justice. It would be the best possible good news story.

I read some time ago that the reason priests are forbidden to marry is the business of inheritance.

WITH life expectancy ever increasing, many of us are looking for ways to improve our quality of life and reverse any damage caused by an unhealthy lifestyle.

Fortunately, researchers in Spain have found a way of reversing brain damage brought about by high-fat diets.

A study at the Jaume I University in Castella de la Plana found mice which were given high levels of fat developed damage to their nervous system similar to that in Alzheimer’s patients, but that this was reversed when they were fed a plant hormone.

Researchers believe this effect may be caused because abscisic acid helps regulate insulin levels which, when out of balance, can cause inflammation in insulin receptors in the hippocampus, the region of the brain which governs long-term memories.

levels are both linked to Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia. The study’s author, Alberto Ribes Navarro, explained: “We have been able to prove that the expression of proteins required for the proper functioning of insulin decreases in neuro-inflammatory situations induced by a high-fat diet.” He added: “With the addition of abscisic acid to the high-fat diet it is possible to rebalance the regulation of these genes, even helping them reach normal levels.”

Abscisic acid is found in a plant’s xylem (the stem) and is used by plants to help with growth and development of tolerance to harsh conditions. The hormone is found naturally in fruit and vegetables. A 2015 study into the acid also found it played a role in regulating blood sugar, which could in turn help

COMING to the tail end of a tour of Europe, the Original Blues Brothers Band will be appearing at the Trui Teatre in Palma this Friday and feature one of the top guitarists in the world Steve Cropper.

He was one of the original and ground breaking Stax house band Booker T and the MGs who had a huge hit with the single Green Onions in 1962.

Stax alongside Tamla Motown was primarily a Soul label for Black Americans with such performers as Sam and Dave, Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes and Rufus Thomas on their roster, yet the house band was comprised of two black and two white musicians which was almost unheard of at the time.

In 1977, Cropper and bass player Donald ‘Duck’ Dunn became part of the Blues Brothers band, appearing on the number one album Briefcase Full of Blues. Cropper and Dunn also appeared in the 1980 movie The Blues Brothers, starring Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi and later reprised their roles in Blues Brothers 2000.

Fit for a king WHILE most people might come to Spain looking to buy a seafront apartment or perhaps even a rustic finca, there is still a market for the slightly more unique property.

There may not be as many for sale as in France or Italy, but Spain offers its fair share of castles or manor houses for sale.

But unless you get very lucky it is going to cost you a quite a lot. This impressive castle comes in at a cool €14.5 million but you do get a lot for your money.

It comes with an estate of 450 hectares located in Badajoz region, about a 2.5-hour drive from Lisbon and Sevilla and three hours from Madrid.

The castle was built in the 13th century and currently belongs to a family whose ancestors bought it in 1906 and undertook a major reform, leaving the castle in perfect condition.

It has about 50 living spaces including six large bedrooms, three bathrooms and nine lounges. The rest consist of offices, a small museum, rooms, bathrooms and reformed stables.

MAGNIFICENT: Fantastic castle, but it will set you back €14.5 million.

Some lounges are used for events such as banquets and weddings although the own-

ers live in the castle.

The estate surrounds the castle and includes pastures

and oaks including Holm oaks.

The pastures of the estate are well-known for their excellence in the breeding of Iberian pigs.

There is also a hunting ground where you can shoot wood pigeons, turtle doves, thrushes, wild boar and deer.

It is the best area of Spain for hunting wood pigeons, being close to the San Pedro mountains, according to agents Moulin.

Grow your own veggies WITH healthy eating on the rise and increasing food costs, there’s never been a better time to have a go at growing your own fruit and vegetables.

Spain’s soil can be very fertile and with a little effort a vegetable patch here could prove very productive. Autumn weather may be cooler but temperatures are still warm enough to grow many crops, so why not try out some of the foods suggested below?

Spinach is a great source of iron and can be grown both in a container or in the ground, providing leaves for salads and numerous other dishes once mature. Garlic has also been shown to be beneficial for heart health and also excels in Spanish growing conditions.

Plant out using existing bulbs bought for eating and place in the soil root down around four inches apart. Expect growth around spring time.

Carrots are fantastic vegetables for eye health and are a rich source

of antioxidants which can reduce the risk of cancer. They also do well in Spanish climates and can be grown from seed straight in the soil in rows around three to four inches apart. Plant in soil that is damp but not wet and do not allow the seeds to dry out.

Spring onions provide excellent flavouring to a variety of dishes, particularly oriental food. They also provide good amounts of vitamins A, K, and C. Plant out shopbought spring onions roots down after first drilling a hole in welldrained soil around 1.5cm deep and at least 15cm away from other crops. Be careful not to over-water.

Finally, the humble potato makes up a large part of many dishes, from a plate of chips to mash, roasties, and even hash browns.

This staple can easily be grown at home by first buying potatoes with sprouts already growing from them. Cut these sections off and place them in a warm, moderately

Next, plant these sections out 12 inches apart and cut side down. As

the plant begins to grow, fill up soil around the sprout when it reaches around eight inches, leaving only

RECENTLY I wrote about students being ‘bribed’ with biscuits. Now we have Waitrose being hammered by both cashstrapped students and parents for its pricy list of student store cupboard ‘essential’ ingredients, described by the supermarket as ‘a starter kit for the fledgling cook about to fly the nest.’

This includes rose harissa paste, organic cider vinegar, organic soy sauce and Marigold Swiss Vegetable Bouillon Powder - the whole list costing freshers £13 and they still wouldn’t have anything to eat!

But hang on, where’s the avocado? Or the wholemeal organic multi-grain toast from Waitrose’s Fairtrade line to slather it on?

To be fair, though, students no longer restrict themselves to the traditional diet of Pot Noodles, baked beans and cold pasta. Mainly due to the internet, a new generation of young food ‘vloggers’ and YouTubers have shown students how to cook creatively and cheaply.

In fact, all the Waitrose items listed have a long shelf life and, though an ini-

The bouillon powder is really useful, lasts for ages and a superb suggestion. Maybe all the carping’s just a classic example of people sniggering because it’s upmarket Waitrose? Good quality seasonings help turn cheap, simple ingredients into nutritious meals.

Can they park in the street?

I live in an urbanisation where there is no proper parking space in the street for a kilometre. The street is a cul de sac. However, for the last 30 years people have squeezed their cars into the street without any problems. The street has no name and there has never been a ‘No Exit’ sign. Now a neighbour has complained to the police there were too many cars parked. The police came and then asked the urbanisation to put a yellow line and a board to prohibit parking. Now I can’t get visitors or a plumber because they have to park on a yellow line and can get a fine. Most of the neighbours have the same problem. My question is: Do we complain to the community or to the police?

As you tell it, the police have taken David Searl no official action. Only the You and the Law in Spain community has acted. I suspect that your street is not really a public way and that nobody can be fined. You want to bring the issue to your AGM and vote to remove the yellow line and the sign.

Let the best man win Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man AS regular readers of my weekly rant fest know, I am one of the world’s finest armchair experts on all things sport.

Near the top of the things I enjoy most is F1 motor racing and I’m a particularly big fan of Lewis Hamilton.

I always watch it if I can. This week Lewis Hamilton won the Russian Grand Prix and traditionally, at the end of the race, there would be a great celebration. He usually leaps from his car, runs over to his massive team of mechanics and other Mercedes team members, and jumps at them hi-fiving and hugging the ones at the front.

This week’s win did not go like that at all.

Lewis sat in his car till the second place driver, his teammate Valtteri Bottas, got out of his car. Lewis then just walked over to Valtteri, shook his hand and told him he was sorry, then walked slowly off over to the Mercedes team.

He shook a few hands and then went inside not really wanting to talk to anyone else. So why? Well this is the reason I’m grumpy. He didn’t actually win. He went over the line first but not because he was the best driver on the

day, but because of team orders that forced his teammate Bottas to move over and let Hamilton win.

This is wrong in so many ways. Winning is not winning if you have to cheat and that’s what they did. They cheated the best driver on the day out of his rightful place. It wasn’t even that if Hamilton came second they would still not be in front in either the manufacturer’s or driver’s championship.

And what about if you like a little flutter and had a few bob on Bottas to win, after seeing how he had performed to get pole position (first on grid)? How can this not be race fixing? If this is now the acceptable way of winning a race it shouldn’t be.

The best have to win. We mustn’t let this ‘win at any cost’ get worse than it is. In F1 it’s obvious if it happens, but it’s the same in all sports. In the Olympics the whole of the Russian team was banned for drug taking. Lance Armstrong was a multi-winner but only because of drugs and the list goes on.

I think the rules for F1 have to be changed.

There must not be team orders. Every driver is there to win, not to make up the numbers.

Mercedes should be fined and made to forfeit points. Let the old saying ‘May the best man win’ actually mean something.

When visiting the vet it can also be useful for nervous dogs to wear a muzzle and also when a dog has been operated on. Wearing a muzzle is another way to prevent him from licking the wound. In the event of an emergency, if you do not have a muzzle then one can always tie the leash around the dog’s mouth to prevent it biting.

I would add that a muzzle does not cure bad behaviour but it is useful whilst an effective therapeutic strategy is developed.

called Monet Technologies Corp, will start with two billion yen (€15.3 million) in capital.

It will initially be focusing on the Japanese market, offering ride-hailing services for public agencies and private

companies, before looking to go global.

SoftBank said the company could eventually perform a whole host of ‘just in time’ services, such as preparing food in transit as it is being delivered, combining its platform for the internet of things with Toyota’s connected vehicle technology.

Monet will not develop its own autonomous vehicles, instead looking at the services that such vehicles can provide.

SoftBank founder Masayoshi said the mobility company was “just the first step.”

He said: “There will be a second and third and I hope

that the connection will deepen going forward.”

The decision to form a joint venture, of which SoftBank will own just over half, comes as the latest in a series of efforts by both companies to move into driverless technology.

Toyota earlier this year debuted a self-driving research car, and at the start of the year, revealed it was developing an ‘e-Palette’ service, which

would offer convoys of shuttle, autonomous vehicles for multiple purposes.

The Japanese car-maker has also invested €437 million in Uber and €870 million in rival ride-hailing company Grab.

Meanwhile SoftBank has also been investing heavily in the technology, pumping €2 billion into General Motors’ selfdriving business Cruise.

It also has holdings in Uber and Grab, as well as Chinese

company Didi Chuxing and India’s Ola. Vivek Vaidya, Asia Pacific vice president for automotive and transport at Frost and Sullivan, said that partnerships were “the way to go.”

“SoftBank has various strategic investments in e-hailing companies and now they have started expanding in developing new chip specifically for autonomous cars. Toyota may want to benefit from that.”
