Suspect held on violent abuse A MAN, believed to be a former Balearic boxing champion, is being held on domestic violence charges accused of hitting his partner in Son Servera, Mallorca.

A judge in Manacor ordered a provisional detention without bail on Monday, after it is said that despite turning himself in to the police last Friday, the accused, 31-year-old Arnau BC, refused to testify at court this week.

The Prosecutor’s office and the private prosecution are believed to have requested the action.

It is alleged the 24-year-old victim returned home from work last Thursday and during an argument over domestic issues, was punched in the face and stomach.

The following day, the accused and his lawyer visited the station, where he was arrested.

Last Saturday, an extension to the detention was agreed awaiting a court date at the judicial headquarters at midday on Monday.

The complainant attended so that the forensic examiner could carry out an examination.

But Arnau BC refused to testify and remains in custody.

According to police sources she then ran into the street where neighbours came to her aid, be-

fore the suspect fled the home.

Shortly afterwards, after leaving Manacor Hospital, the

young woman filed a complaint against the accused for mistreatment.

Stabbing suspect shot A KNIFEMAN, believed to be Arab, stabbed two German tourists before being shot in the leg by police in Palma de Mallorca.

The holidaymakers, aged 27 and 46, are reported to have been struck in the stomach and back and were taken to the Son Llatzer Hospital.

National Police were called to the scene where the 31-year-old perpetrator con-

tinued to be aggressive.

Sources claim he was shouting in Arabic when asked to hand over the weapon, and tried to attack officers.

In order to detain him, a shot was fired to his ankle, a ‘non-vital’ area. He was arrested and taken to hospital.

The violent incident took place at around 1.30am on Monday morning at the Ballermann bar on Playa de

Palma, confirmed police.

No officers were injured and an investigation to establish the circumstances of the stabbings is underway.

Terrorism has reportedly been ruled out at this point.

The German holidaymakers have since been released from hospital.

Scared off OWNERS of beach-based attractions and tourism organisations are calling on the authorities to do something about jellyfish swarms amid claims they have scared off bathers and customers this summer, and a request for nets was turned down by the Environment Department.

Migrant deaths ‘almost triple’

By Joe Gerrard THE number of people who died trying to reach Spain numbered 318 during the first half of 2018, almost three times the amount killed during the same period last year.

About 27,600 migrants and refugees arrived in Spain between January and July.

Around 23,800 of those came by sea and about 3,800 crossed the country’s borders by land, according to the latest United Nations (UN) figures.

The UN said: “Crossing the Mediterranean has become even more lethal.”

The total number of arrivals was almost 130 per cent higher than it was at the end of July 2017. About 12,100 people arrived in Spain during that time. A total of 113 of those died.

year in 2017. Around 28,300 people arrived in the country during 2017.

The most common origin country of those coming to Spain was Guinea. About 3,100 people came from the west African country. Around 2,600 came from Morocco, 2,200 from Mali, 1,200 from the Ivory Coast and around 1,000 from Syria.

The UN’s High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) said in its latest Dangerous

Around 26,000 people were registered in Greece and 18,500 arrived in Italy from January to July.

attempting to cross to Greece.

The UNHCR said there was no conclusive evidence that the rise in those travelling through Morocco to Spain was caused by it being harder to travel to Italy via Libya.

Arrival numbers in Italy have declined by some 81 per cent, according to data.

The body added the total number of arrivals in Europe was lower than it had been in

the previous two years.

European states had taken measures to reduce irregular migration but they had not made it easier for migrants to enter through legal pathways, the UNHCR said.

The body’s report said migrants came to Europe for a variety of reasons including to flee war or persecution, to be with family members or for work and education.

Knifeman causes stir A MAN, believed to have been drunk, wandered into a fast food restaurant in a shopping centre in Mallorca carrying a backpack with a large knife protruding from it.

Witnesses claim the man could barely stand, and dropped the knife, causing alarm among customers. Police were called and he was arrested.

Slippery shoppers BAG thieves are targeting shop workers, particularly in the Porto Pi shopping centre, according to Local Police who are urging staff to be vigilant. Last week a group of people entered a shop and began to ask about products. While distracting the employee, one of the robbers steals the victim’s purse.

Obama unwinds FORMER first lady Michelle Obama, 54, has been papped in Mallorca this week, eating in a restaurant on the island with exUS Ambassador James Costas and his partner Michael Smith, and hiking with her entourage in the mountains. Michelle obviously enjoys the sights and offerings having holidayed in Mallorca last week.

Rent scam ruins trip TWO tourists were conned out of €1,000 this week after paying for the rental of a property in Mallorca, only to find there were already tenants in situ. They ended up spending their holiday trying to recover their cash, reporting the incident to Local Police and filing a denuncia.

Open all access ONCE Social Group this week signed an agreement that will see it collaborate with the Business Federation of Hoteliers of Mallorca (FEHM) to promote the accessibility of establishments. It also aims to improve the social and occupational integration of people with disabilities in the Balearic Islands.

OIL BE: Cascamorras takes place in Granada Province today (Thursday).

Oily moly THESE people have covered themselves in black paint for a religious festival which takes place in two Granada Province villages today (Thursday).

Jesus Maria Fontecha’s picture shows attendees at the 2016 edition of Cascamorras, a fiesta which takes place annually in the towns of Baza and Guadix. It is held prior to the Mass of Our Lady of Mercy on Saturday.

The fiesta began at midnight last night when ‘cascamorras’ festival goers leave Guadix to take an icon of the Virgin Mary from Baza. They are accompanied by a drummer and flag bearer.

Cascamorras attempted to carry the icon to Baza but it was stolen from him before he arrived. When he arrived in the town the locals were furious and covered him in black paint as a punishment.

Church authorities decided to settle the dispute by allowing Baza to keep the icon, but letting Guadix celebrate in honour of it every year.

Relieved of cash A 20-YEAR-OLD British man who fell from the balcony of a hotel in Palmanova while urinating over the side has been fined €600.

The tourist is said to have lost his balance and fallen from the lower terrace at Hotel Lively in Paris Street at around 5am on Monday.

He was taken to hospital with unconfirmed injuries, although sources claim his condition was not serious.

Local Police immediately initiated an investigation into the circumstances.

And in line with recently approved anti-balconing regulations, the holidaymaker was slapped with a €600 penalty and an official complaint filed through the court.

The City Council of Calvia and Local Police authorities have imposed 10 such fines for balconing since June.

This year, eight young tourists have lost their lives in incidents involving balconies across the Balearic Islands.

According to authorities, alcohol or drugs feature in the majority of cases.

Tot hurt in freak winds A BABY was injured after his pram was swept along by strong winds and flipped over a metre high footbridge.

The six-month-old was with his German parents and older brother walking near the beach at Camp de Mar, Andratx, when the gust dragged the pushchair towards the bridge, and the baby hit his head.

The structure connects the sands to a nearby hotel.

According to sources, the

first to react was the child’s mother, who launched herself to try to save her son, injuring her ankle.

The hotel’s lifeguard was a few metres away when the accident happened and called the ambulance service.

Meanwhile, beach guards were already on hand helping to retrieve the tiny boy, who was transferred to the hospital of Son Espases with ‘an injury to the skull.’

JUMPING BACK: Borrell (inset) said Spain could possibly return to GMT.

Back in time SPAIN’S Foreign Minister and the European Union have both proposed altering the clocks of the country and the continent.

Josep Borrell, the government’s top diplomat, said last week the country’s time could jump back one hour to be more in line with its geographic location.

Former dictator Francisco Franco moved Spain into the Greenwich Mean Time plus one (GMT+1) zone in 1940.

“Perhaps Spain should be in another time zone.

Frankly I don’t know. Let’s give the European Parliament an opportunity to see if it is able to find a common denominator between countries that are in such different geographical situations,” Borrell said.

The Foreign Minister’s comments come as the European Commission (EC), the European Union’s (EU) executive branch, said last week it was mulling ending daylight savings time.

It follows a public poll which EC officials said showed there was overwhelming support for ending the practice of putting clocks forward in spring and turning them back in autumn. Around 4.6 million people from the EU’s 28 member

states took part in the online survey.

Borrell said the proposals would have to be debated by Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) before being signed off by the EC. “All countries would have to explain their point of view and to what extent this would favour or otherwise affect work-family balance, the adaptation of timetables to the hours of daylight and energy consumption,” the Foreign Minister said.

Borrell said he suspected member states would differ on the proposals. He added he was indifferent because his schedules were “continuous” in winter and in summer.

“MEPs will have to make a decision about a problem that affects the people’s lives, the economy and energy consumption,” the Foreign Minister said.

Franco pulled Spain out of GMT+0, the time zone of Britain, Ireland and Portugal, as a gesture of goodwill to Nazi Germany and Adolf Hitler in 1940.

The move was taken in a bid to bring Europe’s fascist dictatorships more in line with one another.

It meant Spain saw less light in the morning and more in the evening.

Brit in a coma but stable A BRITISH tourist left in a coma with all his facial bones broken has undergone ‘life saving surgery’ at a Mallorca hospital.

James O’Neill, 29, from Widnes in Cheshire, had been holidaying with two friends in Magaluf when he was found with the horrific injuries.

According to the Liverpool Echo, his two mates still have no idea what happened to James when they found him in a coma after he had stayed out later than the others one night.

He was rushed to intensive care at a hospital in Palma,

where he is still in a coma but is believed to be stable following surgery.

It is understood that the police are not treating the incident as suspicious and no other parties were involved.

Speaking to the English newspaper, James’ cousin, Natalie Ostick, said the surgery had been a success but there were ‘complications.’

She added that while James is still in a coma, he is making small improvements every day and that doctors have started to reduce the sedation because the pressure in his brain had re-

OUR VIEW A very British coup THE weekend in the UK is a good time for politicians of all colours to speak out on matters that they see as important.

The Andrew Marr show is a perfect example of how politicians can use the media to promote their own causes and this past Sunday, former Minister for Brexit David Davis confirmed that having resigned over the Chequers Brexit proposal, he will vote against it when it reaches parliament.

This seems to be one factor that unites many pro and anti Brexiteer MPs as well as the European Union with all sides becoming increasingly more committed to fight it.

Boris Johnson in the meantime has been using his regular article in the Daily Telegraph to criticise the Prime Minister in what many in both media and politics see as his first real move in a campaign to see Mrs May deposed and replaced by himself.

With a majority of just seven in the House of Commons it would not be beyond the realms of possibility for dissidents to vote against the Chequers proposals which would most likely ensure that Theresa May resigned.

If Labour was not itself looking as if it is about to implode over the accusations of Anti-Semitism, it would be almost impossible to consider a Conservative ‘coup’ at this time, but in fact it may be that the Brexiteers would be happy to fight an election before March 2019 hoping that Johnson and his supporters would be elected.

The words of President Kennedy come to mind (although perhaps not to some politicians) - ‘ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country.’

Online artistic wonder AN 88-year-old digital painter from Valencia has become an Instagram sensation with more than 162,000 followers.

Grandmother Concha Garcia Zaera creates colourful artwork using Microsoft Paint, first launched in 1985.

While her Instagram account was launched last October, her love of making pictures with the image editing program began more than 10 years ago.

She told a Spanish online newspaper that it all began when her husband fell ill and she had to stop painting with oils, which was her speciality.

Zaera explained she was ‘at home taking care of him, but he could not stand the smell of oil.’

It was then, after being given a computer by her children, the artist discovered Microsoft Paint, and started drawing simple images before becoming more adventurous.

Zaera’s first work of art was published when one of her granddaughters, unbeknown to her, created an account on Instagram, and published one of

Multiple casualties SEVEN people were injured, three seriously, when two cars were involved in a head-on collision near the Puig Major military base in Escorca.

Among the most severely hurt was an 18year-old boy who suffered a ‘traumatic’ head injury and was taken to Son Espases hospital.

A 31-year-old man sustained abdominal injuries and a fracture to his arm and was referred to Juaneda Polyclinic, while a woman, 26, received fractures to her collarbone and foot. She was taken to Juaneda Polyclinic to be operated on.

The other three ‘slightly’ hurt are said to be youths.

The Traffic Guardia Civil is investigating the crash which happened on Saturday evening around 8pm at kilometre 46 of the M-10 road.

According to sources, one of the vehicles involved is believed to have veered into the opposite lane, impacting with the other. One of the cars was forced into nearby metal fencing.

Several ambulances from the 061 emergency services and police vehicles were deployed to the scene of the incident.

THE State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) activated a yellow alert yesterday (Wednesday) in much of Mallorca in anticipation of heavy rains and storms which can be accompanied by lightning and hail, advising it could drag into today and tomorrow.

On the run POLICE are hunting for two suspects wanted in connection with two smash and grabs in Palma on Monday at dawn, driving a Mercedes into the glass doorways and stealing goods, before driving recklessly, crashing their car.

I know it’s the way it’s going, but parents should monitor it carefully, with only certain intervals during the day allowed.

NO POINTS: Pique shouldn’t have been driving.

BARCELONA footballer player Gerard Pique could face up to six months in jail after he was caught driving without a valid licence.

According to reports from radio station Cadena Ser he was pulled over for a routine check and asked to show his documents. Police officers found he had zero points left on his licence so he should not

have been driving.

In Spain drivers start with 12 points and then lose them for various offences.

Once they have lost all their points they can’t drive until points are reinstated, normally after a ban and a written test following a road safety training session.

Taking to the roads before having points reinstated is an

offence punishable by up to six months in prison or a fine of €6,000.

This is not the first time he has been in trouble with the police. Last year he was fined for speeding and in 2014 he had to pay €10,500 for disobedience after an argument with a traffic officer. His brother was fined for a road infringement in the same incident.

Pro-active moves to boost image MALLORCA is cracking down on illegal holiday rentals with the creation of a new app - part of a wider ongoing scheme to position the island as a more sustainable tourist destination.

Launched by the Balearic Islands government, the Holiday Rental Check Mallorca app will allow visitors to search for holiday homes while ensuring they comply with rental regulations.

There’s also a map function, which allows users to search for properties by location.

Balearic minister for innovation, research and tourism, Bel Busquet said the initiative was aimed at protecting visitors and being transparent with the authority’s rules and regulations.

The new app allows visitors to have instant access to all the information they need about rental homes and to avoid any risks involved with renting illegal properties.

Busquet added that ‘tourism continues to be a main contributor to the Balearic island economy’ and the government’s aim is ‘to develop a long term and sustainable tourism strategy, which provides the maximum benefit for islanders and visitors.’

The online tool is available in four languages, English, Catalan, Spanish and German.

The app is one factor in a bigger plan to alter Mallorca’s image.

By Joe Gerrard THE number of foreign tourists holidaying in Spain in July stood at almost 10 million, a fall of 4.9 per cent on the same time the previous year.

The data, the latest on the industry from the country’s National Institute of Statistics (INE), showed the number of British holidaymakers fell by 5.6 per cent.

Tourists from Britain typically make up a fifth of all visitors to Spain.

Figures for French and German tourists, the leading nationalities in terms of visitors to Spain along with the British, fell by 11.4 per cent and 6.2 per cent respectively.

The drop was the biggest monthly fall since April 2010 when a volcano eruption in Iceland grounded flights across Europe and contributed to a 13 per cent decrease.

The biggest fall for July took place in 2009 following the onset of the financial crisis which plunged much of Europe and the United States in recession. Several months in that year, including July, registered falls of 10 to 15 per cent compared to 2008.

The news comes as Spain’s Tourist Board predicted visitor numbers could stagnate or fall between July and September. There may be an overall fall by the end of this year following record years in 2016 and 2017, Turespaña added.

Cyber-stalked child suicide prevented NATIONAL POLICE officers have prevented the suicide of a child who was being sexually harassed through the Internet.

An international operation between Spanish officers, US Homeland Security Investigation (HSI) and Guatemalan police has led to the arrest of two people who cyber-stalked dozens of young people around the world. The two arrested contacted the children via the Internet from Guatemala and, after gaining their trust, requested pornographic material about themselves. As time went by, the young people had to send more explicit images.

HSI intercepted communications between a minor and a dangerous sexual harasser in which the victim from Cataluña told of his intention

to commit suicide because of the pressure he was under.

The US agents found that the alleged harasser lived in Guatemala and informed the Guatemalan authorities.

Subsequently, National Police officers specialising in cybercrime received an urgent communication from the Prosecutor’s Office investigating crimes against minors in Guatemala. The victim who wanted to end his life resided in Spain and needed to be located urgently.

A rapid investigation led to the victim’s identity being established in just a few hours.

Police in the victim’s hometown launched a search for the child and quickly found him wandering the streets and thus prevented his suicide. The mother of the child told the officers that she had noticed abnormal behaviour in her son but did not know that the problem was so serious.

Guatemalan police then raided the harasser’s home, but he and an accomplice escaped.

A search revealed the duo had been harassing dozens of children around the world.

Months later, the Catalan child was again sexually harassed through the Internet.

Family vigilance prompted them to report the matter to police who forwarded the information to the Guatemalan police as the harassers were the same individuals who had earlier escaped.

This time they were found, arrested and have since been jailed.

Spanish National Police is teaching the Cyberexpert programme in schools, which aims to train children in the safe use of social networks and to raise their awareness of the risks they may encounter in the daily use of new technologies and the Internet.

MAGALUF’S mayor has called for stronger action to be taken to stop the craze of balconing that has seen several people killed or seriously hurt.

Alfonso Rodriguez Badal, the head of Calvia Council which is in charge of the resort town and Palma Nova, said he is shocked how there seems no end to tragedies as young holidaymakers suffer falls every year.

This summer seems to have been particularly bad, he said, adding the council must act to stop young people ‘coming here to die.’

Balconing is a craze where people jump from balconies into swimming pools or from one balcony to another.

Now Badal wants new legislation to try and stop young visitors taking dangerous risks in the name of fun.

Not every fall from balconies is due to balconing.

One apartment block which has seen several deaths this year has had temporary barriers put up on a low wall on the sixth floor.

Firm rate hike talks THE governing Partido Socialista (PSOE) has held talks with allies from a leftist party in Parliament over plans to increase a range of business taxes, a senior member said.

The proposals were floated during talks between PSOE officials and members of the Unidos Podemos group over next year’s budget plans.

Pablo Echenique, Podemos’ Organisation Secretary, said members of the government had told his party they were willing to look into proposals to hike rates on business savings.

SPAIN’S manufacturing sector grew slightly more than in July, by three points in August compared to 2.9 according to an industry index.

Markit’s Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) recorded a figure of 53 points last month compared to 5.29 in July. Anything below 50 points would represent a shrinkage in the sector.

House price forecasts THE price of houses in Spain is expected to rise by 5.6 per cent this year before increases slow to 3 per cent by 2021 according to predictions from the Standard & Poor’s rating agency.

CONSUMER confidence fell last month in Spain compared to July due to a pessimistic assessment of the current economic situation and doubts over the future, according to research.

The Consumer Confidence Indicator (ICC), published by the Centre from Sociological Research (CIS), posted a figure of 102.4 for August, down 3.7 points on the previous month’s figure.

A number below 100 points indicates a negative outlook.

The CIS phoned 2,000 Spanish households to gather the data. It said 66.5 per cent of respondents believed their economic situation was the same as it was six months ago. Respondents rated the current situation at 99.3 points owing to job, finance and economy factors, 2.4 less than July. Expectations stood at 105.6 points.

Latest currency news So-called ‘no-deal’ Brexit fears have continued to weigh heavily on the pound in recent days, even after officials announced that the deadline for the conclusion of talks has been pushed back from October to November.

This helped to drive the pound to euro exchange rate to a fresh 11-month low this week in spite of mounting tensions over the Italian budget.

Across the pond, the GBP/USD exchange rate was able to recover some ground, thanks to unexpectedly dovish commentary from the American Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell.

What’s been happening?

As the UK Treasury released technical notes relating to the impact of a no-deal Brexit investors were prompted to pile out of the pound once again.

GBP/USD: The exchange rate was able to recover some ground across the pond.

With talks on key outstanding issues such as the Irish border still showing no signs of meaningful progress, hopes of a positive conclusion to negotiations remain limited.

Even though the CBI reported the retail sales index for August showed a surprise uptick from 20 to 29, this proved not to be enough to give GBP exchange rates any significant boost.

As the increase in sales was largely attributed to the British summer heatwave, rather than positive underlying trends, the impact of the data proved short-lived.

Signs of optimism in the latest European Central Bank (ECB) meeting minutes offered a boost to the euro, meanwhile.

Although the ECB looks to be shifting towards a more positive outlook, the single currency still came under pressure thanks to worries over the Italian government.

With the populist government on a collision course with EU budget rules, thus raising the threat of a fresh Eurozone crisis, confidence in the euro took a nosedive.

The US dollar saw some fluctuations as mar-

kets reassessed the odds of the Fed raising interest rates twice more before the end of the year.

However, as global trade tensions persisted this helped to limit the vulnerability of the dollar.

What do you need to look out for?

German and Eurozone inflation data for August could see the euro rally sharply across the board, with price pressures forecast to remain above the ECB’s 2 per cent target.

As long as inflation continues to run higher than the ECB target, the chances of the central bank tightening monetary policy sooner rather than later are set to increase, likely weakening the pound.

US trade data could provoke some volatility for the US dollar, with any widening of the deficit likely to encourage further action from the Trump administration to level the playing field.

In terms of UK data, if August’s PMIs prove positive this may encourage the pound to return to a stronger footing against its rivals.

It’s all part of the magician’s illusion LEAPY LEE SAYS IT THE problem with politicians and their respective governments, is that in order to survive, they have to be, (among other things), appeasers, hypocrites, backside kissers, downright liars and media illusionists. Irrespective of their policies, their very survival relies on their skill to deliver each of these ‘attributes’ whenever deemed necessary.

May and her party of disarray, are very good at most - if not all of them! Blatantly revealing her departments’ total disregard for the local British populace, she revealed a disgraceful appeasement of the Muslims who were slaughtering animals in their suburban back gardens, by declaring the practice was quite acceptable, if the meat was for their own use!

No doubt her department also happily condoned the checkout person, who was allowed an unprecedented alcohol-free aisle because his religion didn’t allow it. This latest decision to grandly descend on South Africa, bearing gifts of foreign aid, and seeking future business ties to a country knee deep in diamonds, gold and other natural resources, actually manages to fill all the aforementioned criteria in one fell swoop.

FOREIGN AID: Theresa May recently visited South Africa. are being murdered in the streets and have become victims of (largely unreported) genocide in a country run by a gang of despots, who retain much of their popularity by showing their black citizens they are willing to continually condone and support revenge on the white races who ‘stole’ their country.

Following the same disastrous policies of Zim-

babwe, they are repossessing farms from white owners, who have run them successfully for generations, at an alarming rate. From 1994 to 2013 there were 1,544 murders on SA farms of which a mere 208 were black.

A simpering May chooses to ignore all these racist atrocities and corrupt practices from this murderous bunch and dance among them (very

badly I may add!) offering ‘a wonderful future of trade and closer alliance between our great countries!’ And why has she chosen Africa as her initial venture into the forging of possible new postBrexit trade opportunities with the Commonwealth?

Because she is totally aware that in these insecure, war torn and despot run countries, she will get the most favourable reception. She knows full well that these governments are desperate to be seen doing business with the ‘Mother country.’

It does untold good to their credibility and appearance of legitimacy among their own downtrodden citizens and indeed the rest of the world.

In return, back in the UK, slippery May can boast of going forth into the world and fulfilling her promises to expand our global trade after leaving the EEC. All this is part of the illusion. While the British audience is busy looking at magician May, her ‘backstage assistants’ are busy negotiating the rest of the Brexit ‘compromises’ that will betray British democracy and keep us still tied to this unelected, overpaid bunch of utterly nasty self-serving Brussel zealots forever.

TECH FOR THE TIMID REMEMBER the famous Big Mac Index, invented by (peckish?)

Economist journalists in 1986?

It was intended as a more ‘realistic’ measure of a country’s wealth than the infinitely more boring Gross National Product.

So today Ukrainians can buy three Big Macs for the price of one in Spain - which in turn is 30 per cent cheaper than in Switzerland.

The index does of course come unstuck in those parts of the world McDonald’s hasn’t yet colonised.

With relatively few golden-arch franchises, Africa has its own equivalent: the KFC Index.

Also problematic is that you apparently get 8 per cent less burger in your Mexican Big Mac than you do in Australia.

But now the techno age has spawned a new index. This one highlights the huge gap, nay gulf, between what it actually takes for consumers to buy the very same electronics around the world - devices almost all made in the same place (China), but with very dif-

Take the recent iPhone X. At a wallet-bruising €1,150 or so in much of Europe, it’s today’s most expensive mainstream phone (alongside its new rival, the Samsung Galaxy Note 9). The X has spawned an adaptation of the Big Mac Index: how long you would actually have to work to buy one.

The Swiss (yes, them again) can trouser a new iPhone X after working just 38 hours. Spaniards must toil nearly four times as much, 140 hours. Spare a free ringtone for the Ukrainians (708 hours), Indians (900 hours) and the poor old Egyptians (1,066 hours).

The good news is that although

technology doubles in power roughly every two years according to Moore’s Law, fortunately it doesn’t double in price. In fact it’s getting cheaper.

Back in 1982, you might recall from a previous column, a basic word-processor cost an eye-watering €7,500 in today’s money.

Last night I spotted a mini computer on Amazon for €90, and a Raspberry Pi for barely a third of that.

The original 2001 iPod was around €350, which would be about €500 today. But it isn’t: the current iPod costs less than €150 in most of Europe. And some lesser music players are now so cheap they’ll soon be giving them away with your cornflakes.

So despite not living in Zurich there’s at least some hope for the rest of us.

Burgernomics apart, by all the statistics technology is indeed becoming steadily more affordable for all of us every day we wait. It’s the waiting that’s so hard.

Loss leader WHILE the iPhone has virtually the highest profit margin of any mainstream techno product today (it sells for a bruising three times what it actually costs to make, still want to buy one?), some tech products actually sell below cost.

Perhaps the most famous bargain is still Amazon’s Kindle e-reader. Not only does poor Mr Bezos make zero profit on every one he sells, but he’s actually selling it at a loss in many cases.

Until you factor in all the ebooks he dearly hopes to flog you.

Printers have long been sold with a similar rationale.

They’re often highly-subsidised devices which you will finance many times over by buying their ink at a costper-drop infinitely higher than the finest Champagne.

A pity there isn’t an indelible Cava.

‘Correfoc’

LAURA PENN ‘PENN TO PAPER’ EACH morning when you wake up on Mallorca you have no idea of how the day is going to end. Life on the island is totally unpredictable. I have always said that life on the island is akin to a play where none of the cast have been given the script.

Even fore-armed with this knowledge, I was mildly surprised to find myself being chased through the woods by a demon wielding a chainsaw this week.

I know it’s not the done thing to accept blame for anything these days, but this was all totally my fault. I went, of my own free will, to a Correfoc.

If you have never experienced this Catalan festival, you are missing a treat for at least four of the senses. Correfoc (not to be confused with Carrefour) literally means ‘fire-run’ and it is an opportunity to have the living bejesus scared out of you.

The first sense to be stimulated is hearing as all street lighting is turned off and the only sound is distant drumming, becoming slowly louder. Then, out of the black, a figure from your darkest nightmares will appear and breathe fire on you. At this point you remind yourself quite forcibly that this

is fun and that no one dies.

This first demon (like a Native Indian scout) comes ahead of the gang and appears without warning. The rest of the tribe are easier to spot as they appear carrying pitchforks of fizzing fireworks and torches of real flame. It’s hard to describe the outfits, but sheep skulls, animal skins, and red demonic masks featured heavily in this year’s collection.

Often there is a figure dressed as Lucifer riding on a chariot with sparks and flames shooting from its wheels. The devils dance

and jump around to the incessant and hypnotic beat of the drums and you are encouraged to join in and hurl yourself under a shower of burning embers. (Wet t-shirts and hats are advised).

Health and safety would have a heart attack! In a week when residents in Stoke-onTrent were told to remove welcome mats from their front doors as they could be a hazard, on Mallorca it is perfectly acceptable to run at a complete stranger with a chainsaw, so long as it’s during a fiesta.

I once took a friend and her sulky teenage son, who had a Masters in ’attitude,’ to a Correfoc and he ended up a blubbering wreck clinging to his mum’s arm.

We shouldn’t have enjoyed that as much as we did.

The Correfoc is a relatively new addition to Mallorca folklore, having only really become popular in the 1980’s. It began as a spontaneous reaction between participants and spectators in the more traditional Ball de Diables or ‘Devil Dances’ and now Correfoc festivals are held in most towns and villages across Mallorca. If you get the chance go to one, and wear your scorched, singed t-shirt with pride as a badge of bravery.

A day in the life of a debt collector AFTER 40 years in the debt collection industry I never cease to be surprised by the excuses given by some of the people we have to deal with.

Of c o u r se m o st a re p o lite , helpful and eager to sort out any queries on the account. They are happy to confirm addresses and emails so that payment can be made and are delighted to arrange a payment plan mutually acceptable to client and customer.

But some are so outlandish in their excuses that if it were not so serious one could say ‘you couldn’t write this stuff’…

The most appalling excuses are when the debtor uses health or accident issues with family members , wh i c h a f t e r ch ec k in g o f course, are completely untrue.

We have the fashion shop owner who has attended his mother’s fune r a l f i v e t i m e s s o fa r th is year … t h e c o n v e nien ce s to re mother who is only running the shop because the son (owner) has

had given us such information.

Then we have the more mundane, but more obvious excuses such as the old favourite ‘cheque is in the post,’ now superseded by ‘I definitely transferred the money last week through my computer,’ same excuse different century.

The change of ownership exc us e is ofte n a c a us e for c oncern…. Business was sold sim-

ply on a handshake or ‘I am simply running the business because the owner has disappeared.’

Of course these excuses are not given every day but it is depressing that some people seem to lose any ethical morals when it comes to paying bills. Is it a sign of the times or the fact that creditors have allowed a credit situation to get out of control. I have always thought that it is not the debtor always at fault for taking extended credit, but the supplier’s fault for allowing it to happen.

Inaction by any supplier, creditor, business or community, in any credit situation is often the root cause of late payment. The lesson to be learnt is often ‘The Quicker We Act The Sooner We Get Paid.’

U nfort unat el y t her e wi l l al ways be those that consider it a game to delay, frustrate and tease the supplier, but with professionalism, speed and determination such excuses can be overcome.

EVER felt that September is the real start of the New Year - and not January? The time when, after the long summer break, kids are back at school and adults at work.

So much so that, when I still lived and worked in the UK, I used to think of the day after the August Bank Holiday weekend as ‘back to school for adults.’

September always felt like a new beginning because of the change in routine (at least if you were in school or had kids in school). A time of fresh starts, self-evaluation and, for travel operators, the inevitable post-holiday complaints. Like some of the following that do nothing to dispel the stereotype that we Brits are a nation of whingers!

Some past complaints from British tourists (all genuine - honest!) are particularly telling. One angry tourist who took a summer cruise around Alaska complained the weather wasn’t as warm as expected - ‘I wish I stayed at home!’ For another, ‘topless sunbathing should be banned!’ because her ‘holiday was ruined - my husband spent all day ogling women.’

TOO TOURISTY: Strange complaint about Disney World. spoiled because ‘the local women were too beautiful; it made me feel bad about myself.’ ‘There was no sign telling you that you shouldn’t get on the hot air balloon ride if you’re afraid of heights.’ ‘I spent a whole week on safari, and didn’t see any decent animals. Just some old antelopes.’

A man even sent a complaint to Disneyworld claiming it was ‘too touristy.’ Other

complaints included: ‘You said the town was next to a volcano, but we went and there was no lava. I’m pretty sure it was just a mountain.’

‘We booked an excursion to a water park but nobody told us we had to bring our swimming costumes and towels.’

Good grief! What’s up with these guys?

I’d be more than happy to go out and buy a spare cossie and towel for that water park.

Will they get rollover credit?

In your piece on capital gains you say that sellers over 65 who are tax resident in Spain and have lived in their home for three years can be exempt from Spanish capital gains tax. You then say that, if you use all the proceeds from your sale to purchase a new main residence in Spain, you can also be exempt from capital gains tax. We have just sold our cortijo near Almeria but have only lived there for two years.

We are both Spanish tax resident, but under 65 years old. All the proceeds from the sale of our house of €125,000 were used to buy our new main residence also for €125,000, so we used all the money from the sale to buy the new house. Will we be exempt from paying the Spanish capital gains tax when declaring this on my tax return next year?

Agree with you totally. There are many dog breeds out there that do not have the jaw strength of a croc in your living room.

This little chap of ours who is adored even by people who dislike dogs had, at 18 months old to endure two German shepherds, one on his hip and the other on his neck. And these two dogs were being taken for a walk, off lead, by an eight-year-old boy.

The only good thing that came of it was that the boy’s father received an extremely bad bite to his inner thigh when he tried to recapture his dogs that did not even have collars on.

Left out in the sun and heat I NOTICED whilst visiting Mijas village earlier this week that the donkeys have been moved to facilitate the feria over this weekend. They are not shaded, they are out in the sun and heat for hours, I have taken a couple of photos for you and I ask, who is regulating the health of the Mijas donkeys?

DEAR Editor, I have been watching your coverage on the plastic waste within the Benalmadena Paloma Park. I was wondering if the local council have responded to the article and the couple’s finding from the UK when they discovered a swan with a plastic bag in its mouth.

There seems a lot of talk from the public but little action from the authorities. Only last week again in your paper I saw a dead fish caught in a plastic glove, the photo was captured by a diver in Spanish waters and has gone global, what’s happening from those who should be helping to prevent the harm coming to fishes, swans etc.

BENEFITS: The positive effects of a cup of rooibos are far reaching. loss. Apparently, its active ingredients actually help remove dead skin cells that block hair follicles and prevent hair from growing. It’s also packed with zinc, calcium, copper and potassium (essential for hair

It’s easy to prepare your own tea rinse at home. Steep for 30 minutes in boiled water.

Once cooled, pour over fresh-

ly washed or conditioned hair, or simply spray it on. Allow to sit for 20 minutes before rinsing.

As mentioned, the antioxidants in rooibos have anti-inflammatory properties, which

assist in preventing cardiovascular disease, while its antiviral properties boost your immune system. It also has a hypoglycaemic effect on the body, helping to balance blood sugar and improve insulin re-

A serious one this week Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man I’VE been grumpy about this before, but this week my plight was brought to the notice of the world because it happened to someone in the public eye. Anne Wafula Strike, a Paralympian, had to wait nearly an hour to be helped from her flight. She had booked her assistance weeks before, as I have on many occasions. This is not an unusual occurrence.

It happens at every airport and with every airline - people needing assistance can wait for ages to be helped from the aircraft. If you travel with your own wheelchair it can be a bigger problem because sometimes your chair is not brought to the aircraft and finishes up in the baggage hall. The other problem is that if there is more than one person needing assistance, everyone has to wait to be herded together and go off in a convoy.

If it’s when you are boarding a lot of the time you are moved from one holding area to another. To be honest, the people that help you are all very good; it’s the actual system that’s the problem.

Firstly, there are not enough helpers at most airports. Secondly, they need some disabled peoples’ input. All we want is to be able to

have almost the same choices as able bodied folks do at airports, train stations and even ports.

I was going on a cruise; I got there in plenty of time and had booked assistance in advance.

As everybody boarded they were greeted by members of staff with champers and music and a party atmosphere. I, in my wheelchair, was taken to another entrance in the area where they loaded the supplies and was loaded from there. That can’t be right, can it?

Here’s something else that affects me. Not everyone in a wheelchair has a disability that means they cannot walk or stand or get out of their wheelchair. I suffer from Primary Orthostatic Tremor - Google it - I can walk but I cannot stand still for more than two or three seconds. The tremor in my legs is three to four times faster than someone with Parkinson’s.

Tremors are measured in Hz. Parkinson’s tremors are between 4-6Hz. My tremor is 1517Hz. The point I’m making is, when you see someone get out of their wheelchair and walk, don’t do, as some people do, which is to either mutter ‘it’s a miracle’ or tut or whatever.

Take a moment and accept they may be like me and have something rare that you have never heard of. Don’t group all wheelchair users as being the same. Sorry, a serious one this week, but hey ho. mikesenker@gmail.com

by Andrew Harding LAST week I completed my discussion about vitamins, this week I want to discuss essential minerals.

Essential minerals can be divided into two categories; macro and micro-minerals. Macro-minerals are defined as minerals present in the average human body of five grams or more, they are: Calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium and potassium. Micro-minerals, (which I will discuss next week) are present in quantities a lot smaller than five grams.

Calcium: The most abundant mineral in the body, is needed for bone and tooth formation and for a healthy nervous system. The average adult has 1kg of calcium in their body. Dairy products are a good source, as are non boned fish such as sardines and whitebait.

Phosphorous: Is also required for bone and tooth formation and keeping the body’s cell walls intact. It has the same dietary sources as calcium.

Magnesium: Is required to activate enzyme function and necessary for nerve function and bone formation. Any greenleaved vegetable is a good source.

This week’s recipe: (Chateaubriand: ‘A large steak cut from the thickest part of a fillet of beef.’)

Roast Chateaubriand with a Bearnaise Sauce Serves 4 1kg piece Chateaubriand Steak 1 tablespoon olive oil Pour the olive oil into a frying pan on a medium heat.

Sear it on all sides to seal in the juices.

Place in an oven tin and then into an oven pre-heated to 200 Celsius (conventional) or 180 Celsius (fan).

Cook for 25 minutes per pound plus 25 minutes for medium to well done, 20 minutes per pound for rare to medium.

When it is cooked, take it out of the oven, cover and let it rest for 10 minutes.

While it is cooking make the Bearnaise Sauce.

140ml white wine vinegar 2 whole shallots, chopped 1 bunch tarragon, coarsely chopped Salt and freshly ground black or green pepper, to taste 170g butter 4 egg yolks Place the wine vinegar, salt, pepper, tarragon into a heat resistant bowl and then place in a pan containing water, heated to boiling. Boil until the volume has been reduced in volume by half.

Strain and discard onion and tarragon.

Pour back into the bowl and reduce heat to a very gentle simmer.

Add the butter and stir until melted.

Add egg yolks and continually stir.

Serve.

Unsold housing stock dwindling THE number of unsold new homes has now dropped to pre-housing crash figures, accord i n g t o t h e Sp a n is h Ministry of Development.

RENTAL MARKET: Is facing a particularly difficult time in some regional capitals.

€33.4bn of rental income missed OWNERS of empty properties in Spain are missing out on an estimated €33.4 billion a year in rental income.

Of the 25 million homes in Spain some 13 per cent are lying empty for a variety of reasons.

Many are second homes used for just a few weeks a year by their owners - but a failure to let them out is proving costly according to real estate portal portal pisos.com.

age profit of € 9,732 per year - 15 per cent more than last year.

Owners of empty properties in Madrid (€16,740/year), the Basque Country (€13,512/ year), the Balearic Islands (€13,308/year), Cataluña (€11,784/ year), and the Community of Valencia (€11,052/ year), are the ones who theoretically would gain the most by letting their empty properties.

I’m sorry, Becky just isn’t sharp

by Adam Whalley-Lewis I’M not sure what William Makepeace Thackeray would have made of ITV’s adaptation of Vanity Fair, ITV Sundays. I’m not a fan, but as you will have guessed by now, I will give any TV and any Rioja a chance, even a period drama based on a novel I studied for A Level and haven’t touched since.

Becky is complex, I remember that from sixth form, but she is no hero, a fact confirmed by the book’s subtitle, ‘A Novel without a Hero’ (another throwback to the Common Room). This latest offering is from the makers of Victoria and Poldark, so I should be recommending it to you, crowns, muscled torsos and the like.

I’m not recommending it and not due to the lack of torsos and general regality. I just can’t get behind Becky. If she was on Facebook she would get a slightly awkward following, you know like Jacob R-M, but I don’t think this production works.

Olivia Cooke plays the ‘Miranda Hart, look down the lens of the camera, knowingly,’ Becky who initially seeks to exploit the Sedley family, bring on Claudia Jessie as Amelia and then David Fynn as her wealthy but wet brother, Jos and well, nothing really happens.

written in ancient Greek to get my teeth into.

If you weren’t watching the second offering from Vanity (drop the Fair, like actors do - I simply couldn’t imagine anyone but Julie doing Rita, darling) you might have caught Mother’s Day on BBC2, Monday. This thought provoking drama was set against the backdrop of an IRA bomb blast in Warrington in 1993. Twelve-year-

old Tim Parry was one of the victims and the programme followed his parents, Colin and Wendy along with campaigner for peace, Susan McHugh in the months after his death.

Daniel Mays played Dad, Vicky McClure played Susan, but Anna Maxwell Martin steals the show with her performance as Mum. I won’t say any more, you might want to find this one on iPlayer, but have the tissues ready, Hello Sweetheart, Mummy’s Here will melt you.

Going back to last weekend, The Jonathan Ross Show started series 13 on Saturday night, ITV. Such a pity that 13 clearly isn’t Jonathan’s lucky number. Mr Ross managed to begin the new series with nobody I had heard of. Now, I don’t pretend to be any better read or TV viewer than I am, but I didn’t recognise a single name.

Meanwhile, Mr Norton is being blasted across social media by the BBC having fun with A-List names. Let’s hope that ITV find some decent funds or an A-Lister who has something to promote before Jonathan continues this Saturday.

Looking forward, Hello Caroline, the BBC has Last Night of the Proms on Saturday with contributions from sing-along-events across the UK. Maybe we should try and get them to a Costa next year?

Citronella is a tried and tested mosquito repellent and by making your own, you can save money and add a couple of extra scents if the uncut citronella smell is too overpowering.

OVER the past 12 months I have been watching, reading, studying, documentaries on TV and noting animal behaviour patterns prior to mating, this is fighting for high status ‘Winner takes all.’ This can be related to our domestic pets like cats and dogs and more so if you have two or more males or a male or female cat!

Cats and dogs are able to mark their strong hormone odour by marking where male animals will pick up the odour and can cause inhouse fighting where many owners cannot understand what is wrong with their pets.

Hormones are responsible for a lot of important things inside the body, like regulating digestion, sleep patterns, and mood. They also are at the root of a lot of behaviour problems like running off while out for a walk.

As I said earlier, finding a mate is what drives a great deal of animal behaviour. Hormones prepare an animal for sex and for nurturing offspring, and they also make you drool over Taylor Swift, Ryan Gosling, or

Frog mating calls happen because of hormones called androgens, which are male sex hormones.

Testosterone is the most wellknown androgen, and is also responsible for a lot of male physiology. In humans, androgens are responsible for the development of male sex organs and secondary sex characteristics such as body hair, deep voice, and muscle development.

Frogs are not the only ones who make mating calls because of testosterone - birds do too. Male birds experience an increase in testosterone concentrations in the spring, when days get longer and food becomes more abundant. This is the perfect mating season so male birds start to sing. When testosterone levels increase males sing more and may have more complex songs hoping to attract a female ready to mate.

Three exceptional superyachts unveiled in Cannes ITALIAN constructor of superyachts Benetti expects to set the Cannes Yachting Festival (which runs from Tuesday until Wednesday September 19) on fire with not just one, but three fabulous vessels.

MY Uriamir is the second unit in the Delfino 95’ range, the Benetti fleet’s entry level yacht. A 29-metre displacement yacht with a fibreglass hull and carbon fibre superstructure, exteriors were designed by Giorgio M Cassetta, while interiors were developed in accordance with the owner’s specific requests, alternating light and dark materials such as marble and tay and tanganica woods, with polished and matt surfaces also bringing stylish contrast.

On the Lower Deck are four guest cabins, while the bow area is reserved for the crew. The Main Deck, enhanced by a beautifully laid wooden floor, is where the owner’s cabin is found.

Benefitting from two separate wardrobes and a double bathroom, this spacious cabin leads to the main saloon with its large windows on the beam. The Upper Deck features a helm station, while a swimming pool with panoramic views is found in the bow area.

The exceptionally large Sun Deck is a real novelty for yachts of this size and features two sofas and a second external pilot station, ideal for enjoying every moment of the cruise.

The three spectacular Benetti Yachts will be at Cannes.

The garage can accommodate a 4.4metre tender, while the engines are two 1,000-hp Man V8s, which enable the yacht to achieve a maximum speed of 14.5 knots and a range of 2,400 nautical miles at 10 knots.

On the Upper Deck is the outdoor dining area and, towards the bow, a large Jacuzzi and custom sundeck. Inside is the Sky Lounge and captain’s cabin. The Sun Deck, with sun pads and sofas, is designed for blissful outdoor relaxation, both underway and at anchor.

MY Lejos3 is a 38-metre superyacht and the fourth unit of the Fast 125’ range.

This is an exclusive model that boasts a propulsion system built in collaboration with Rolls-Royce, and is equipped with Azipull Carbon 65 (AZP C65), a highly efficient, reliable and light system that, thanks to the widespread use of composite materials, is able to guarantee excellent performance in terms of weight reduction and manoeuvrability.

The layout is spread across four decks, with plenty of space for the four VIP cabins. The company’s Jaguar Classic division has announced it will restore and convert E-types ‘following an overwhelmingly positive reaction to the original concept for ‘the most beautiful

E-type to go electric electric car in the world’.’

A concept version of the EV version of the car was unveiled at Jaguar Land Rover Tech Fest in September 2017, and it certainly drew attention.

Combining its restoration ex-

pertise with cutting-edge technology from the Jaguar I-PACE, the award-winning zero-emissions performance SUV, Jaguar Classic will offer tailor-made Etypes restored and converted to electric power at the same Classic Works facility as its outstanding E-type Reborn restorations in Coventry, UK. An EV conversion service for existing E-type owners will also be offered. To preserve the authenticity of the base vehicle, the EV conversion will be fully reversible.

the positive reaction to the Jaguar E-type Zero concept. Future-proofing the enjoyment of classic car ownership is a major stepping stone for Jaguar Classic.

“E-type Zero showcases the incredible heritage of the Etype, and the expertise and craftsmanship at Classic Works, while demonstrating Jaguar Land Rover’s dedication to creating zero emission vehicles across every part of the business, including Jaguar Classic.”

Technical specifications and pricing details will follow, but Jaguar Classic is now taking expressions of interest from potential E-type Zero clients. Deliveries of the first electric E-type

vehicles are expected to start from summer 2020.

The company says that its Jaguar E-type Zero concept not only drives and looks like an Etype, it also offers outstanding performance, with quicker acceleration than the original Series 1 E-type.

Jaguar Classic is targeting a range in excess of 170 miles for all-electric E-types, helped by the car’s low kerb weight and sleek aerodynamics. The concept is powered by a 40kWh battery, which can be recharged in six to seven hours, depending on power source.

Apart from its state-of-the-art powertrain, modified instrumentation and fascia showcas-

ing the latest touchscreen infotainment (which will be available as an option), the E-type Zero concept is largely original.

An electric powertrain with single-speed reduction gear has been specially designed for the E-type, utilising many Jaguar IPACE components. Its lithiumion battery pack has the same dimensions, and similar weight, to the standard E-type’s sixcylinder petrol XK engine and is in the same location.

Using an electric powertrain with similar weight and dimensions to the outgoing petrol engine and transmission means the car’s structure, including suspension and brakes, has not changed, simplifying the conversion and keeping the driving experience in line with the original vehicle. It drives, handles, rides and brakes like an original E-type.

Cavendish overridden by virus MARK CAVENDISH will miss the Tour of Britain and will take an indefinite break from racing due to the presence of the Epstein-Barr virus in his system.

Cavendish’s team Dimension Data added in a statement that the former world champion had unknowingly been racing and training with the virus over the last few months.

It was something that the 33 year-old Max rider was ‘glad’ to hear as it helped to explain why he had been struggling for form.

Cavendish had an extremely difficult Tour de France last month, finishing well outside the time cut on stage 11, having struggled to compete at the business end of any of the sprint stages.

That was on the back of a series of crashes and injuries that derailed the first half of his year.

The 30-year-old Tour stage winner was also forced to miss a chunk of last season after being diagnosed with infectious mononucleosis - glandular fever - caused by the Epstein-Barr virus, and it has returned with cruel effects.

Cavendish said: “This season I’ve not felt physically myself and despite showing good numbers on the bike I have felt that there’s something not right.

“Given this and on the back of these medical results, I’m glad to now finally have some clarity as to why I haven’t been able to perform at my optimum level during this time.

“I’m now looking forward to taking the time necessary in order to get back to 100 per cent fitness before then returning to racing again at peak physical condition.”
