A POSTWOMAN knocked off her motorbike in a ‘hit and run’ has appealed for help in tracing the driver.

Ana Belen Hinojosa Holgado suffered fractures of the tibia and fibula and needed surgery as a result of the incident, which happened on the Esporles road in Establiments, Palma on August 23.

She has since uploaded a video to her Facebook account, recorded from her hospital bed, pleading for witnesses.

Ana Belen says she was riding her motorcycle when she was struck from behind, and was apparently left lying on the ground in pain as her assailant drove off.

She said: “I do not know if he got confused, he was on his cell phone, or if he had smoked something, but he hit me from behind, leaving me lying on the

Main suspect in Dutch boy’s murder arrested 20 years on in Spanish forest THE main suspect in the 1998 murder of an 11-year-old boy at a summer camp in the Netherlands has been arrested in a Spanish forest.

Jos Brech, 55, was recognised by a Dutch tourist who tipped off police after seeing a photo of the man wanted in connection with the sexual assault and murder of Nicky Verstappen.

The youngster had disappeared from the Brunssumerheide nature reserve overnight on August 9, 1998. His body was found nearby the next day. He had been sexually abused before he was killed, according to police.

The detainee now faces extradition to the Netherlands within a few days.

Brech became the main suspect in the murder after the investigation asked 16,000 males aged 40 to 65 from Limburg, the area of the murder, to voluntarily submit to a DNA test.

When Brech - said to be a survival expert who could hide out in remote locations - disappeared from the country without saying a word to his family or friends an international ar-

Acting on information from a Dutch tourist, Spanish police arrested Brech in a forest about 50 miles from Barcelona.

Originally Dutch and French police thought he may have been hiding out in the Vosges region where he owns a cabin. A search of his property allowed detectives to find DNA traces, which they say link him to the

killing of Verstappen.

At the time of the murder police had launched a massive search, but the boy’s killer was never found.

New techniques allowed police to garner DNA evidence from the boy’s clothes in 2008, but no matching specimen could be found - so earlier this year police asked 16,000 men to voluntarily give DNA samples.

A REAL ESTATE scam worth an estimated €4 million has been exposed by the Guardia Civil.

The con involves six private homes in Mallorca, two in Cataluña, and an office registered in Cala Major, Palma. Sources say up to 200 people may been swindled out of millions, and arrests are expected to be made soon.

Beach brawl GERMAN tourists clashed with street vendors during a fight which has been uploaded onto the internet. It is believed the brawl at Bronca, Playa de Palma, started after a seller tried to ‘defraud’ one of the holidaymakers.

Security guards from nearby entertainment venues apparently intervened to calm the situation.

Face doesn’t fit A MOTORIST who sped away from officers on foot was later stopped in Sant Antoni and found to have a false driving licence.

The document carried the driver’s photograph but he didn’t match the Greek nationality. He was arrested and an investigation into whether he can stay in Spain is underway.

Shut up shop A KEY location for the distribution of counterfeit brands in Mallorca has been located and shut down by police. They recovered 8,300 items, said to have a street value of €200,000, as opposed to €2 million for the original versions, and 31 people were arrested. So far this summer, police have confiscated more than 35,000 label copies.

AUTONOMY DAY: Ceuta marks it autonomous status this Sunday.

City celebrates THIS is Roberto Pla’s aerial view of Ceuta, one of Spain’s enclaves in Africa which celebrates its Day of Autonomy this coming Sunday.

Lying only 14 kilometres from Cadiz and 28 kilometres across the Strait of Gibraltar from the British territory, Ceuta has been under Spanish rule since 1668.

Ceuta is one of two Spanish autonomous cities, the other being the country’s other African enclave of Melilla.

The cities have more powers than those on the mainland and have days to mark their status as Spain’s Autonomous Communities (regions) do.

King John I of Portugal captured Ceuta from the

Kingdom of Fez after sailing for the city on August 21, with it being conquered the next day. Ceuta’s flag is similar to that of Portugal’s capital of Lisbon and it still bears the shield of the country.

Portugal formed the Iberian Union with Spain in 1580, meaning all its overseas possessions were jointly run by both countries.

The Iberian Union dissolved in 1640. By 1668 Ceuta was in Spanish hands after King Afonso VI of Portugal handed it to King Carlos II of Spain under the Treaty of Lisbon.

Ceuta is now part of the Andalucia region. It was attached to Cadiz Province until autonomy was granted in March 1995.

Significant rise THE number of self-employed workers in the Balearic Islands is 11.4 per cent higher this year compared to nine years ago, according to the Federation of National Association of Autonomous Workers. The most significant growth recorded was in the real estate, health and education departments. The financial crisis is thought to be responsible.

Two crashes A MOTORCYCLIST was seriously injured after being involved in a collision with a car.

The 35-year-old was taken to Manacor Hospital after the crash on the Son Carrio-Sa Coma road on Tuesday morning. The motorist was unharmed. Hours later a coach and a car collided near Cala Millor, and one person was wounded.

Holidaymaker in a coma A BRTISH tourist is fighting for his life in an intensive care unit in a Palma hospital after being found with horrendous injuries.

James O’Neill, who was on holiday with two friends, was left in a coma as a result of his severe wounds, which included all of the bones in his face being broken and head injuries.

It’s not clear whether he was attacked or had an accident.

The first James’ family in Widnes,

Cheshire, knew about his condition was when they received a call from the Foreign Office on Saturday.

James, 29, was on his own when the incident occurred after he stayed out later than his friends.

Since receiving the news, efforts have been under way to get hold of a passport for James’ parents, Colin and Pauline, to fly out to Mallorca.

A crowdfunding page has been set up to help.

Store keeper attacked A MAGALUF shop owner was viciously beaten by three British teenagers after catching one of them stealing.

Haojie Shang, 25, was attacked after trying to stop one of the 17year-olds stealing sunglasses as he walked by his store in the Mallorcan party resort.

He told a national newspaper how the tourist threw a drink in his face before knocking him to the ground last Wednesday.

The trio then apparently kicked

and punched the shopkeeper repeatedly as he tried to protect himself.

Bouncers at a nearby bar rushed to help and kept hold of the thugs before police arrived to arrest them.

Haojie needed hospital treatment for his injuries but is now back at work.

The alleged assault lasted for around half a minute and the aggressors apparently attacked his elderly dad when he tried to intervene.

TREASURE TROVE: Salvador Dali’s (inset) letters feature in the archive.

The art files ARCHIVISTS in Barcelona have received a trove of documents which they believe could shed new light on Spain’s 20th century avant-garde art movement.

The files, which include thousands of documents from artists including painter Salvador Dali and poet Federico Garcia Lorca, belonged to the Barcelona art critic Sebastia Gasch. Many of them have never been published before.

Their donation to Catalan scholars was signed off by Emili Gasch, an Economics Professor and son of the art critic and Eugenia Serra, director of the region’s National Library.

Joan Minguet Batllori, a Professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and an expert on Gasch, said the collection was “sensational.”

“There is a wide breadth of items. Not only are there letters from some artists and very important critics in the history of 20th century art. There is also important material about the circus as well as about dance, flamenco and Spanish cinema,” Batllori said.

Emili Gasch said it also featured letters from his father’s “constant friend” Joan Miro, the painter, sculptor and ceramicist from Barcelona.

There was also correspondence from Dali and Lorca who Sebastia Gasch counted among his friends, his son added.

The documents, seen by some Spanish media outlets, detail how Dali and Gasch came to know one another. The critic wrote to the artist in 1926 after seeing one of his works in Barcelona.

Gasch wrote an article praising Dali’s work.

The archives feature a letter from Dali thanking him for his praise and also to tell him about his distaste for the word ‘artistic.’

“It is a horrible word that only services to indicate things that lack art at all: artistic show, artistic photography, artistic advertisements, artistic furniture,” Dali wrote.

Their friendship later soured after Dali delivered a lecture in the 1930’s declaring himself a communist, which Gasch mocked.

Dali called Gasch an “imbecile” in a letter responding to his mockery which is in the archive.

The documents also feature correspondence, poems and letters from Lorca.

“I always say that you are the only critic and the only sagacious person I have ever met,” Lorca wrote.

KIKO HERNANDEZ is one of the most well-known faces in Spanish television and a few days ago he was seen going out to dinner with a woman he claimed was just a friend.

They dined at a restaurant in San Sebastian de los Reyes, on the outskirts of Madrid.

The pair opted for a rather summery dress style and they both appeared to be really enjoying each other’s company.

It seems it cannot be avoided that members of the public go crazy for any news surrounding Kiko’s life outside of ‘Salvame,’ a programme aired on Spanish television network Telecinco since 2009.

Who is she? Are they friends? Was it a date? These were just a few of the questions posed by many of his followers on social media.

The establishment was likely chosen due to it being a rather small restaurant where they thought they could relax, the pair left together in Kiko’s car later that night.

The ceremony will take place at the San Sebastian AWARD film festival in Spain next month.

A TELEVISION presenter, Jasmine Harman who has coverered A Place In The Sun: Home or Away since 2004 was flooded with suggestions by her Instagram followers after sharing a problem she encountered on set.

The 42-year-old TV PERSONALITY: Funny went shared a number viral. of selfies as she got to work this week, but one in particular stood out.

She wowed her fans with a monochrome photo, perhaps teasing them with a hint of cleavage, wearing a striped dress and beaded necklace.

In the background, a man could be seen sat on a bench a little worse for wear and Jasmine later captioned the snap ‘when someone is sleeping off their hangover in the exact spot you want to film in.’

The mother-of-two added a bunch of hashtags and asked her supporters what she should do next.

Two decades on we remember the People’s Princess TWENTY-ONE years on from the shocking death of Diana, Princess of Wales, the day is forever ingrained in the nation’s memory.

We all remember where we were and what we were doing when the tragic news was announced to the world that the beloved royal had been killed.

The most photographed

woman of her time died of fatal injuries in the early hours of August 31, 1997, after a horrific car crash in a tunnel in Paris.

She had been travelling with her boyfriend Dodi Fayed, who also lost his life together with driver Henri Paul, and the circumstances surrounding the accident attract controversy and conspiracy theories to this day.

Her untimely death at just 36

years old led to a huge international outpouring of grief from people who are now remembering her two decades on.

A number of events have been organised and TV shows broadcast to mark the anniversary of the stunning ‘People’s Princess,’ who loved spending time at Spain’s iconic Byblos Hotel in Mijas.

Her Royal Highness stayed three times at the leafy enclave in the hills above Fuengirola, where she was famously photographed topless by paparazzi.

The hotel, which recently reopened its doors after closing in 2010, was the first place she spent the night during her debut visit to the Costa in 1993 the same year she announced her withdrawal from public life.

This followed a well-documented life in the limelight, after marrying into the world’s most famous family.

After her death, a sea of flowers was left outside Diana’s Kensington Palace home, and in scores of locations across Britain and further afield.

Fire damage at ‘a low’

by Joe Gerrard WILDFIRES in Spain gutted almost 18,000 hectares of land from the start of this year to mid-August, the smallest area consumed by blazes in the last 10 years.

Data from the Agriculture Ministry showed some 80,228 hectares of land were destroyed by fire during the same period last year. That was the highest figure since 2012, the year which saw more than 180,637 engulfed by wildfires.

An average of 66,061 hectares of land were covered by blazes over the last 10 years. Firefighters were called out to an

average of 8,833 wildfires over that period, with this year’s number at 4,493.

The majority of this year’s fires, 3,227, did not cover an area larger than one hectare. A total of 1,266 fires covered more than one hectare and three fires were classed as major due to them burning more than 500 hectares. Spain’s Mediterranean coastal areas took the brunt of this year’s forest fires, with almost 40 per cent of the land destroyed by blazes on such places. More than 38 per cent took place in the northwest, almost 20.3 per cent were inland and about 2.3 per cent in the Canary Islands.

By Joe Gerrard THE British government has told its taxpayers, including those living abroad, that they must declare their earnings on overseas assets

by September 30 or face penalties.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), the country’s tax collecting authority, said the call was aimed at those who have not informed officials of assets and earnings outside the country. It relates to earnings which come under income, capital gains or inheritance levies.

The deadline follows the passing of new tax rules in Britain which are designed to target those who stash undeclared earnings foreign assets, according to Treasury sources.

It comes as Britain is set to join the Common Reporting Standard (CRS) system this October which allows a total of 100 countries, including Spain, to share financial accounts data.

“We will continue to relentlessly crack down on those not playing by the rules,” Stride said.

“This new measure will place higher penalties on those who do not contact HMRC and ensure their offshore tax liabilities are correct,” he added.

The Treasury said in a statement that earnings from renting out holiday homes and other overseas proper-

ties were liable to be taxed.

If a taxpayer notified HMRC by September 30 they would then have 90 days to fully disclose their earnings and pay any tax owed.

“If taxpayers are confident that their affairs are in order they do not need to worry. If anyone is unsure, HMRC recommends they seek advice from a professional tax advisor,” the government department said.

The Treasury added those wishing to declare could do so by using its digital disclosure service, telling a

HMRC official or any other method agreed with tax collectors.

Stride said the government had recovered the equivalent of more than €3 billion in undeclared earnings since 2010.

On to a successful future EURO WEEKLY NEWS said goodbye last week to a budding young reporter who approached us looking for a leg up in her career.

Gabriella Elkhouri, who is working towards her journalism badges in Sweden, spent two weeks in our Costa del Sol head office.

Journalists and designers showed her the ropes and helped her to score a front page on our Mallorca edition.

The words that follow are from Gabriella who was tasked with writing a retrospective of her time at the paper before she left us. Here is her story: “After two fun weeks of learning the ins and outs of a weekly newspaper I’m now sharing my internship experience at Euro Weekly News.

My name is Gabriella Elkhouri, I was born in Sweden, at the age of one my family moved to Spain where I was raised. After 19 years living under the sun I moved back to

Sweden, where I am currently in my first year of studying Journalism and Multimedia, at Södertörns University to become a journalist.

At the end of July I contacted Euro Weekly News and asked them if I could have an

internship with them. They gladly accepted and shortly after I began my internship.

The EWN staff were extremely welcoming and helpful, and offered me very good advice. As a Swedish girl growing up in Fuengirola I was

always surrounded by different nationalities, it is something that has affected me positively and shaped me to the person I am today.

The reason for my choosing Euro Weekly News was because its a newspaper that

makes different nationalities feel at home when they are not in their motherland. Something that I have felt here.

The first week as an Intern I was story searching, shadowing the editor seeing how articles were made.

I also spent my time with reporters and learnt the aspects of planning pages for the newspaper. I was given the opportunity to write a front page, with all the help I could get.

The first time I saw the front page in paper was really exciting, especially when I saw my name on it. I have been here for two weeks now and learnt so much in such a short time.

One of the biggest things I discovered with the EWN is that when everybody works together, that is when the best results are achieved, ‘Teamwork makes dream work’ as they say.

I have managed to work harder and faster, something that is really going to be useful for me in the future. I now appreciate more the importance of news and how it affects people and society in general.

I would like to thank Mr and Mrs Euesden for awarding me two weeks of internship with the newspaper. I really appreciated the willingness to let me explore all the departments within the company.

I was able to sit in on meeings, collaborate with the writers and write content for the publications. EWN really allowed me to see how an editorial team works from start to finish.

I have gained skills in researching, writing and learnt the meaning of team work. I look forward to going back to cold Sweden and taking these experiences with me.

This internship has only helped to increase my desire to work for a company like this in the future.

Thank you again to the team of EWN for all of your support, and for all of the opportunities you have given me.”

Desperate appeal to find missing woman AN urgent appeal has been made by the family of a woman who has been missing on Costa del Sol for more than a month.

Marie McManus, aged 42, last used her credit card to check into a hotel in Torremolinos, Malaga, on July 8 - and the card was last used on July 11 in the same holiday resort town.

Her now distraught mum was the last person to speak to her on July 15.

The Penn is back on Mallorca Radio A FAMILIAR voice is returning to the radio airwaves of Mallorca after an absence of five years. Laura Penn started the first English radio station on the island, Luna Radio back in 2005 and went on to host shows that became popular with expat and Spanish listeners.

On Sunday she returns to the island’s airwaves on Mallorca Sunshine Radio for a weekly programme featuring news, events and classic soul and Motown songs.

“I was attracted to Mallorca Sunshine Radio because it has a

broad appeal to all nationalities on the island,” says Laura. “I am really pleased to be back on the radio on the island that I call home.”

Laura worked at several successful commercial radio stations in the UK before moving to Mallorca, where she is credited with being the first person to bring English Radio to the Balearics. “When I arrived on the island there was only one hour of radio in English a week on Radio Calvia. That is why I set up Luna Radio which became a forum for all nationalities of residents, not just exiled

Brits,” she says.

Laura has been working in television for the past five years which has taken her away from the island, but she is pleased to be broadcasting again to Mallorca.

“Local radio works best when it speaks to people about their lives and their community,” she says. “That is why I am delighted to be joining Mallorca Sunshine Radio and sharing what we all have in common, a love for this island.”

State mulls paying up THE Economy Ministry is weighing up whether to voluntarily pay back money early to a European banking fund.

Spain has debts of €26.7 billion with European Stability Mechanism (ESM) which it must repay by 2022. The fund was created to provide European Union (EU) member states with emergency cash during financial crises.

Government sources said it was studied whether to make the early payment, or amortisation, but added no decision had been reached.

Court cuts tax bill SPAIN’S National Court has ruled that the country’s government must lower the amount by which it intended to fine a United States-based steel company for alleged tax fraud.

The Madrid court ruled against the government in an appeal filed by Alcoa in connection with an audit in which the Treasury claimed it owed some €131 million in fines.

The court found officials had not accounted for losses the company racked up in the years before the 2006 to 2009 period when the fraud is alleged to have happened. It has

The company has reportedly factored in a €26 million expected loss to its third quarter earnings over possibly having to pay the fine.

Alcoa sources said it did not expect a favourable outcome if the Spanish government took the case to Spain’s Supreme Court for further appeal.

The firm and Arconic, a subsidiary of Alcoa which specialises in aerospace and vehicle manufacturing,

have estimated the new figure could range between €21 and €53 million.

Company sources said the final bill would be split between Arconic and Alcoa. The former is set to assume 51 per cent of the cost and the latter 49 per cent under the plan if the two are still fined.

The €26 million figure assumes a worst case scenario in the company’s forecasts designed to cover the 49 per cent of the total the Treasury is likely to demand. Alcoa is the sixth largest aluminium producer in the world.

SPANISH government spending on pensions rose by 4.86 per cent to more than €9.2 billion by the end of July, a historic record for that month.

Pensioners were paid an extra €100 in July due to a revaluation which left seven months of arrears.

Pension increases in this year’s General State Budget by 3 per cent for minimum rates and 1.6 per cent for all others also pushed up spending government officials said.

DIRECTORS at the El Corte Ingles department store chain have reached an agreement with their shareholders over the departure of president Dimas Gimeno.

Gimeno accepted an agreement drawn up by the firm’s bosses last Saturday evening. He resigned shortly before being formally dismissed on Sunday following a standoff which lasted several months.

The former president has agreed to sever ties with El Corte Ingles in exchange for the firm paying him the equivalent of two years’ salary as part of a compensation package. The total payout has not been confirmed.

The agreement follows a week of talks in which Gimeno tried to secure a bigger payout over his dismissal which was agreed by company bosses last June.

LUXURY home purchases rose in Spain by 27 per cent in the first half of this year and the number of sales in Cataluña fell by 13 per cent between January and June, the real estate agent Lucas Fox said.

Power funds SPAIN’S Council of Minister has approved a €15.25 million payout to electricity firms who helped to cover a shortage of funds in the sector during 2013 after the courts ruled the government had to compensate the firms in 2014.

Self-employment grows THE number of workers set up as self-employed has grown by 1.3 per cent across the Spanish economy since 2009 to almost 3,251,950, according to data.

A report from the National Federation of Autonomous Workers’ Associations (ATA) showed that 43,219 more workers had opted for the status from July 2009 to the same month this year.

Women led the growth in numbers while the number of men who worked for themselves declined. The number of female self-employed workers grew by 7.9 per cent while males fell by 1.9 per cent.

Data also showed self-employed workers aged 40 and above represented 65.2 per cent of the total.

FINANCE, BUSINESS & LEGAL MINISTERS from Spain’s government have said they will not move forward with their plans to balance the country’s books until the Senate is stripped of its debt policy veto.

Deputy Prime Minister Carmen Calvo said following a meeting of the Council of Ministers last week the government would press on with its deficit reduction strategy once changes came in.

Her comments come as leftist parties including the anti austerity Unidos Podemos group and the pro Catalan independence Esquerra Republicana de Cataluña (ERC) backed the governing Partido Socialista (PSOE). Valencian regionalists Compromis have also offered their support.

Calvo said the veto, which allows the upper house of Parliament to strike down debt and deficit legislation, had created an “exceptional and unintelligible” situation.

“We are aiming to return to the constitutional normality we had under previous laws which maintained Congress’ pre-eminence over the Senate,” Calvo said.

“The Congress as the seat of popular sovereignty will be able to adopt final decisions, as is the case with all other laws. The Partido Popular (PP) introduced this veto, perhaps for political and partisan reasons,” the Deputy Prime Minister added.

Deficit path stalls Ministers vow to remove Senate veto

VETO ROW: Ministers want to strip the Senate of the power. would be difficult or “almost impossible” to remove the veto before the end of this year.

Pablo Casado of the opposition conservative PP, who currently hold an absolute majority in the Senate, has said his party would oppose the reforms.

The centrist Ciudadanos also voiced their opposition.

Casado claimed it was a ploy from the government to try to end the separation of powers laid out in the constitution.

Teodoro Garcia Egea, the general

secretary of the PP, said the move showed the leftist and anti-austerity leader of Podemos Pablo Iglesias governed Spain.

“One of the demands of Podemos is to remove powers from the Senate in which Spanish voters gave an absolute majority to the PP,” he said.

The tussle over the veto follows meetings between government ministers at Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s residence in La Moncloa last week for talks on deficit plans.

Their proposed stability pact set a target of the deficit equalling 1.8 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2019. The figure is up from the previous PP government’s goal of 1.3 per cent.

Deficits for spending have been targeted at 0.4 per cent for the Madrid government, 1.1 per cent for the welfare budget and 0.3 per cent for regional spending.

The government has estimated that their plans will see them spend €6 billion more than was to be spent under PP plans.

Executive earnings rankings THE boss of one of the world’s largest fashion firms has topped a list of the highest paid chief executives of the biggest firms listed on Spain’s stock exchange.

Pablo Isla, the president of Inditex, earned the most money last year of any IBEX 35 executive at €10.7 million.

The figure included a €6.5 million pay packet and another €4.1 million in shares, according to data from Spain’s National Securities Market Commission.

The president of Acciona, a renewable energy and infrastructure company, came second. President Jose Manuel Entrecanales earned a total of €10.4 million last year.

Energy firm Iberdrola’s CEO, Jose Ignacio Sanchez Galan, took home €9.4 million. Ana Botin, the head of the Santander bank, came fourth with €7.8 million.

Government control for dangerous dogs?

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT HORRIFIC photos once again this week of a young baby savagely mauled by a pet dog.

How long is it going to be until the authorities realise that a number of canine breeds are actually no more adaptable to the living conditions of human beings than many dangerous wild animals?

To my mind the likes of Bull Terriers, Mastiffs, Rottweilers etc should be viewed in one place and one place only. The local zoo. In the last 10 years there have been 17 deaths in the UK due to dog attacks and 200,000 reports of dog bites in the last year alone!

These are horrendous figures and the most tragic fact of all is that the majority of victims were extremely young. Many of these tots, now scarred for life, have had their whole futures altered beyond redemption, simply because the two-legged animal that should be the most responsible of all, deems for some unknown reason to allow unpredictable, potentially life destroying four legged canines to share their homes.

When are they going to recognise the devastation these animals are actually capable of? I do actually shudder when I see photos, or postings

DANGEROUS BREEDS: These dogs are capable of causing devastation. of dangerous dog breeds, cuddling up or licking the faces (not too hygienic anyway!) of babies of sometimes a few months old. One, split second vicious snap and those faces could be gone forever. When are the government going to see some sense and ban certain dangerous breeds altogether?

I await the slings and arrows of DDO’s (dan-

gerous dog owners) with my usual full metal jock strap firmly in place!

Contrary to the outcry that accompanied it, I did have some sympathy for the British pensioner who said her Benidorm holiday was ruined because her hotel had ‘too many Spaniards in it.’

Not being present at the time, I can’t comment on her remarks about the general rudeness of the

other guests, although I am fully aware that certain cultures may appear somewhat more abrasive and a little more obtrusive than the British are generally exposed to! No, to an extent I can fully emphasise with her problem.

Some years ago, when the children were a great deal younger, I decided to take them all to a hotel in Mallorca over the Christmas period.

After checking in and exploring our ‘special Christmas treat’ It didn’t take long to realise that the hotel was full of Germans. In fact, the whole of the Christmas festivities were geared toward the Alemannia’s.

The staff all addressed you in German. The shows (including the comedian) were German orientated. The food had a distinct German flavour, the bars were empty by 10pm and breakfast was served at some ungodly hour around sunrise! Our whole Christmas was in fact ruined.

I believe that hotels do have a certain responsibility to inform potential guests that their establishment may be geared toward some culture or citizens from a specific country. At least you would then have the choice of who you would prefer to share your hard-earned break with.

3. Don’t blitz your entire address book with funnies or a cat video. If you can’t desist, at least use the

4. Don’t assume the recipient knows who you are just from your e-mail address, especially if it’s ‘hotlips36-24-36@gmail.com.’ Attach a proper signature to every email.

5. Check previously-quoted text for potential landmines before re-

sending it, unless the entire ‘thread’ has only been between you and your single correspondent.

6. Mixing up Reply and Reply All has cost many a hapless employee their job. Ditto not ensuring you’ve clicked the right addressee.

7. Don’t put emojis in business correspondence. Sad-face emoji really doesn’t do when apologising for missing the tax-form deadline.

8. Nowadays if you don’t reply to a message in 24 hours it’s a snub.

9. Go easy on the exclamation marks!!! Not for nothing are they called ‘screamers’ in newspaper parlance.

10. Never shoot from the lip; don’t e-mail when you’re angry. Or drunk, which should be a criminal offence.

11. Keep things brief and to the point. Wordy letters are a relic of a bygone age, more often’s the pity, but there it is.

12. Don’t send giant attachments, or fleets of them, without asking first.

13. Finally, last thing before hitting Send, run a (spell)check.

Be particularly aware of the pitfalls of predictive text, which might easily have turned your dear to dead, being pregnant to pringles, your kissing to killing (I’ve had them all).

Never mind the embarrassment caused when predictive changed the two vowels in a message about a lady’s car called a Volvo.

To BCC or not BCC RULE 3 says don’t blitz your entire address book with a bulk e-mail, covered in detail in an earlier column.

If you really must, at least ‘BCC’ the recipients rather than revealing to all and sundry just how many (or few) actual people you know.

That’s also vital these days when lists of real, active addresses are digital manna from heaven for anyone of the spamming persuasion.

The most common solution is to address the e-mail to yourself in the normal way.

Then go through your address book adding recipients individually, by clicking the BCC button for each.

Incidentally, did you know that under Europe’s new GDPR rules, bulk e-mailing is now technically illegal unless you ask each person’s individual consent? So good luck with that.

LAURA PENN ‘PENN TO PAPER’ THERE it is - the roll of the eyes, the curl of the lip. Never has a television series provoked so much derision - nor has one been so incredibly popular.

Almost everyone that I speak to claims to think that the programme is a load of rubbish and yet an incredible 3.6 million viewers tuned in to watch the final of Love Island UK in June, making it the most watched programme in its slot across all channels, beating the mighty BBC on what is regarded as ITV’s second channel.

Maybe I ought to talk to more young people, as over a third of viewers were aged 16 34 years old. Learned professors are writing theses on how the programme teaches young people about relationships in a world where so much interaction is done via a screen.

If you love Mallorca you ought to at least like ‘Love Island’ as the series is filmed at a villa on the island, and not just the UK series but also a series for Germany and (as of this summer) one for Australian television. The benefits to the island are huge, not just in terms of revenue and investment, but also the exposure that Mallorca gets across the world.

LOVE ISLAND: The series is filmed at a villa in Mallorca.

In practical terms, the television companies hire local security, transport, catering and production facilities. The cast and crews sleep, eat and play at hotels, bars and attractions on the island, all of which boosts the local economy, but the bigger picture is the

positive promotion of the island to a worldwide audience.

Halfway around the world, half a million Aussie viewers saw our beautiful beaches, stunning coves and pretty villages every night for six weeks. All this is free PR that

must have the suits at the Balearic Tourism Ministry giggling into their Hierbas.

I had the great privilege of working on the first series of ‘Love Island Australia’ this summer and I have never worked with a more talented, enthusiastic and genuinely positive bunch. All the Aussies were excited and delighted to be on Mallorca and they spent whatever time they had away from work exploring, enjoying and appreciating everything that our ‘love island’ has to offer.

What is more, they all posted this positive stuff on social media and told all their chums back in Oz what an incredible place Mallorca is. What is the betting that visitors from the southern hemisphere to the island increase?

The Australian version of the series has been recommissioned next year and the word is that ‘Love Island UK’ will run for at least another five years. So, the reality show that mixes beauty, brawn and banality will be around for a while yet, and Mallorca ought to be grateful that, while other islands can only watch and wish, this is the real Love Island.

Mike Senker In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man I WAS round at friend’s the other day and they have a youngish child who was being a little boisterous. Not naughty, just being a child basically and, all of a sudden, the mum said: “If you don’t behave you will have to go to your room.”

Now, when I was a kid, this was definitely a punishment. In my room I had a bed and a wardrobe and maybe a few toys.

I’ve seen this kid’s bedroom when we were shown round the house. Believe me, being sent there was not a punishment.

There was a flat screen TV, Play Station speakers, headphones and a laptop. I know things change, but it’s becoming harder and harder for me to accept certain things.

For instance, some youngsters can hardly write because everything is done on a keyboard. Then there is predictive text - who needs to learn how to spell?

Here’s one for you - ask anyone under the age of 20 to tell you the time on a normal watch. You will be amazed at the amount that can’t. Why? Because all people do

now is look at their phone and read the digital clock.

In my opinion every child should be taught how to tell the time on a normal analogue watch. What do you think?

Not so good AND now to insurance, there are many adverts on TV for comparison companies, but remember that can be a minefield as some promote the companies that give them a bigger commission.

Then there is the dreaded small print.

You think you are getting the same, or better deal. But I’ve found, when trying to sort my daughter’s car insurance out, that what initially looks like the same or better cover doesn’t quite turn out that way.

When you go through the clauses you can sometimes be better off with the original, which at first appeared to be dearer.

Now that it’s over, it is a dog litter tray. Men, women and children let their dogs run free on it so they can poop on it, then take their dogs away when they have done their business.

Time to chip all dogs so that these criminals can be heavily fined for such anti-social behaviour. Dog poop carries numerous diseases and you can bet that any fly that lands on your food or face has been on some dog poop very recently. And fine the owner of any dog not chipped.

Airport closed HI, I’d just like to say how disappointed I am about San Javier airport closing, as the alternative Corvera is 34 kilometres further on.

I for one will never use it, San Javier was making money and busy.

Why on earth didn’t they put the military over to Corvera, it would have been out of the way, but no. Again money spent on this monstrosity which nobody wanted and they could have extended San Javier.

HAVING read your article (Our View, Well done Councils) please, please tell me where these caring councils are who look after residents. I live in the lovely town of Catral renowned not for its beauty but its history of corruption and illegal building on a large scale!! The very rich ex-mayor and many other agencies lined their pockets, though this was 16 years ago those activities are still impacting on residents of Catral in a big way The mayor of Catral whom I am sure is a very caring person unfortunately has little more power to help than a dog with rubber teeth as Valencia Council took his real power away. In 2007 many residents were served with demolition orders on their homes, can you even begin to imagine the heartache and worry that caused, we are now in the year 2018 and yes although these orders are suspended they are still registered against our properties, some residents do not even know they have them till they try to sell their houses All attempts to resolve this awful situation have failed.

Top solicitors, estate agents, residents have all been totally ignored by Valencia who refuse to discuss the matter with anyone and are sitting on these orders even though they

The heartache goes on and despite what you think about caring councils nobody seems to care about the forgotten residents of Catral. Maybe your paper could give some thought about the other face of the caring councils which I am sure are not exclusive to Catral. Thank you and I hope I have touched a caring nerve somewhere.

EU departure DEAR Editor, I write into your paper occasionally, with views on the subject of the UK leaving the EU as it affects UK nationals who are TAX resident in Spain ( not to be [frequently] confused with part timers and holidaymakers) Today I see in the Irish papers that the Central Bank is trying to find a way of enabling UK state and private pensions to be paid into pensioners’ euro accounts, in the event that capital and financial services will not be included in any ‘deal’ and worryingly this disastrous idea of walking away with no deal at all.

There are about 135,000 UK state pensioners tax resident in the Republic of Ireland. Private pensions added raises this figure to 150,000 (UK gov figures).

These are very largely people on fixed incomes - much like the majority of UK pensioners resident in Spain (110,000) but I see no move to encourage people to talk about this, and, really prepare for any eventuality. All I hear is ‘it will sort itself out somehow,’ ‘it will be all right in the end,’ ‘wait and see what happens.’

Would there be any way of trying to get all the information in one place - reliable, verifiable as to what exactly do pensioners need in order to minimise the disruption and expense this exit is most likely to produce, and would a media project to stimulate this be worthwhile in the public interest and - an element of the media public service information responsibility?

Included would be all the essential elements of EU citizenship, and adherence to the laws of the host country, eg - all financial contracts, the EHIC, driving licences, ownership of vehicles, etc, etc and, what being a citizen of a third country would mean in each category.

Mental health illnesses are on the rise ALMOST two in five workers are suffering from stress and anxiety.

According to a survey conducted by Behaviour and Attitudes, mental health issues are now the most common illness in the workplace.

In fact, it suggests that these health conditions have pushed cancer and back pain into second and third place for illnesses among staff.

Some 38 per cent of employees say they are under stress, according to the survey which was commissioned by Friends First and conducted by B&A. It found cancer in second place with 33 per cent of workers citing it, followed by chronic back pain, which is suffered by 32 per cent of workers.

Almost half of under35s say they have taken extended sick leave of a week or more due to stress or anxiety.

While four out of 10 surveyed say they have taken extended sick leave due to an accident or illness.

The average sick leave period was 14 weeks.

H o w e v e r, a q u a r t e r o f employees say they would not be paid for a period of sick leave, even for one month or less, adding more stress to an existing problem.

Friends First said that in general most of the workers surveyed described themselves as being ‘reasonably healthy’ o r ‘ v e r y h e a l t h y, ’ w i t h just 10 per cent claiming they are less healthy than they would like to be.

A romantic night for free DAVID GÓMEZ a Swiss pianist who has made a name for himself with his special presentation, one piano and 200 candles will be appearing at the parish church in Costitx tomorrow (Friday) at 9pm.

Add red wine, beef stock, cumin and simmer for 10 minutes.

Add cherry tomatoes salt and black pepper and cook to reduce until sauce thickened.

Add the red kidney beans and simmer for another 10 minutes Add lime juice and simmer for two more minutes, add cilantro, stir once.

Check and add seasoning if necessary.

Place tortillas on to a lightly oiled oven tin, place chilli con carne on one half of each tortilla, place cream cheese on top, followed by the red Leicester. Fold the tortilla to enclose the chilli/cheese mix.

Place in an oven, pre-heated to 200 Celsius (fan oven), 180 Celsius (no-fan) for 10 minutes.

Serve.

Hint: Substitute red or yellow peppers for the green, or any combination.

Tip: To avoid wasting unused chilli peppers, place in a shallow bowl in the sunshine until they dry out completely and then store in a sealed jar. Use scissors to cut them when they are needed and add to the sauce to rehydrate them.

It is estimated that in the Salamanca district alone, more than 7,000 luxury apartments are now owned by Venezuelans.

Their country is facing financial ruin, with inflation expected to hit one million per cent by the end of the year.

And while some nationals face a fight to survive on a daily basis, others have found a safe haven for theirs in Madrid’s real estate market.

According to real estate investment adviser, Luis Valls-Taberner, almost every street in Salamanca, an upmarket district of the Spanish capital, is home to a wealthy Venezuelan.

While he would not identify the buyers, he told told an international business newspaper that some of the properties were purchased through investment companies based in Miami or elsewhere - but the money always came from Venezuela.

Madrid’s housing prices surged about 17 per cent last year, the strongest rise among

Spanish cities, raising the cost of living downtown to levels last seen in 2007, before the country’s construction bubble burst.

The Salamanca district, with its fashion shops and restaurants, has been at the heart of the boom, partly thanks to rich Venezuelans.

In Salamanca alone, by the estimates of some Madrid real-estate companies, over 7,000 luxury apartments are now owned by these expatriates.

And the bulk is from families who became rich decades ago, in an economy whose main asset, oil, was nationalised in

the 1970’s.

According to Rolando Seijas, the Venezuelan founder of SNB Capital, a Madrid-based investment firm whose activities range from insurance services to an electronics component factory in southern Spain, the ‘big fortunes in Venezuela have always been connected among themselves and dependent on having a good relationship with the state.’

He added that ‘some Venezuelans have become successful entrepreneurs in Spain, starting delivery services, opening restaurants and

shops or taking over franchises, like that of the US fast-food chain Subway.’

Venezuelans have not only been buying Spanish real estate, but also building it.

In 2017, the Cohen family, owners of one of Venezuela’s largest commercial real estate com-

panies, opened the Sambil Outlet on the outskirts of Madrid, which bills itself as Spain’s largest shopping centre.

This year, the Cohen group also bought a building in Salamanca which will be turned into a dozen luxury apartments.

Cities face Volvo scrutiny ORGANISERS of the Volvo Ocean Race are currently working to identify host cities for the 2020-21 edition.

The selection of these stopover points will define the route of the race, which is expected to include eight to 10 stopovers, while maintaining the Southern Ocean legs of the race.

“Together with the race organisers our experienced host procurement group is looking forward to taking the next edition of the race to market and engaging with potential stopover cities around the world who share our enthusiasm about the exciting evolutions that the next race will bring,” said Robert Datnow, Managing Director of the Sports Consultancy, which is helping race organisers identify exceptional host cities.

“I expect the bidding process to be hotly contested and highly competitive.”

What is known is that the next edition will definitely start in Alicante, Spain, in September/October of 2021, and finish in Europe in May/June of 2022.

“Since the most recent edition finished last month we have been working hard to define the evolution of the race heading into 2021 and beyond,” said co-owner Richard Brisius.

“Our priority is to stay true to the core values of the event as we move forward. We want to promote a sustainable race around the world that will be a relentless and exhilarating competition between teams comprising the very best sailors, designers and boat builders in sailing.

Utilising a strategy of promoting raw content direct from the on-board reporters and sailors on each race boat, the event set new records for online and social media audience numbers and fan engagement.

As a live event experience, nearly 100,000 corporate guests attended at least one of the 12 stopover cities, where the Race Villages attracted over 2.5 million fans.

“Since 1973 this race has been about people taking on the challenge of racing around the world. This last event was among the best in race history,” Brisius concluded. “Our job now is to build on that platform and take the race from strength to strength as a sustainable, premium world sporting event.”

On May 31, 2018, organisers confirmed the next race will take place in 2021 under new ownership. The transfer of ownership to Atlant Ocean Racing Spain is expected to be completed and take full effect as of October 1, 2018, with Volvo continuing as a sponsor of the race.

MOTORING FACT SEAT is on course for a record year after it recorded its highest ever sales figures for the first six months of the year.

The Spanish carmaker’s global deliveries went up by 17.6 per cent to reach a total volume of 289,900 vehicles. This figure represents an increase of more than 43,000 cars compared to the same period in 2017 and breaks the record set in 2000 of 278,500.

In June, SEAT again sold more than 50,000 vehicles in one month (51,400), which is 13.7 per cent more than the 45,200 sold in the same period in 2017.

According to SEAT Vice-president for Marketing and Sales, Wayne Griffiths: “In the first six months of 2018 we experienced a surge in growth beyond our initial expectations. After growing nearly 15 per cent in 2017, this year we are exceeding this figure thanks to the boost given by the new Arona.

So far the Catalan team have seen off Alaves 3-0 and followed that win with a 0-1 result away from home against Valladolid.

Ousmane Dembélé scored the only goal and Luis Suarez had another chalked off for offside as newly promoted Valladolid gave the reigning champions a scare.

They thought they had equalised, only for a header by Keko to be disallowed for offside when reviewed by VAR. Barcelona will be back home for their next match and will be hoping they are not as difficult to break down as Valladolid were.

La Vuelta returns…

LA VUELTA (Tour of Spain) cycling race started this week in Malaga before heading off into the Costa del Sol. Rohan Dennis (BMC) won the opening time trial, beating Team Sky’s Michal Kwiatkowski into second place by six seconds with Victor Campenaerts (Lotto-Soudal) third.

Although short - the flat course was just eight kilometres long - it gave cycling enthusiasts the chance to see their heroes at close quarters.

Sunday saw the teams start off from Marbella on a course that took them to the Caminito del Rey in El Chorro. Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) out-sprinted Kwiatkowski to take the stage having overhauled earlier attacker Laurens De Plus

(Quick-Step Floors) who came in third.

The cyclist stayed on the Costa del Sol for stage three, racing from Mijas to Alhaurin de la Torre, before heading off east of Malaga.

Stage four started in Velez-Malaga and went on to Sierra de la Alfaguara. Next up was the Granada to Roquetas de Mar route as stage five, before today’s (Thursday) Huercal-Overa to San Javier stage.

Tomorrow cycling enthusiasts can view the riders on the Puerto Lumbreras (Murcia) to Pozo Alcon (Jaen) stage. Saturday sees the tour going from Linares to Almaden as the riders head further inland and up to northern Spain and Andorra in the coming weeks.
