A XARQUÍA - C OSTA T ROPICAL
Coke ring bust SPANISH Police have arrested three Britons and two Spaniards for their alleged involvement in one of the country’s largest ever cocaine busts. The trio were held after officers seized 1.2 tonnes of the drug in raids near Almuñecar and in the Basque province of Guipuzcoa. Lorries registered to a haulage firm were used as transport, and when a British driver raised suspicions investigators tailed him. The spokesman said: “The person driving the lead vehicle, whose job it was to guide the lorry safely, led it to a property near San Sebastian. “Both vehicles concluded their journey at the other end of the country, in a warehouse between Almuñecar and Salobrena. “Police arrested three of the suspects as the driver began to offload his cargo.” Detectives then uncovered an additional 678 kilos of the drug in Zarautz, Basque Country.

Hot wheels Official’s mother arson claim By Sally Underwood A politician in Rincon de la Victoria has alleged his mother’s car was set alight by opponents. Ezequiel Carnero, a councillor for the Ahora Rincon-Podemos party, has told the Guardia Civil he has received ‘threats’ from his managers in the previous council team. He explained the car was burnt out around 1am, and he said: “I feel harassed and persecuted, and the worst of all is that my mother and my sister are afraid even to open the windows of the house.” He said the fire started outside

The Local Police and firefighters attended the scene and extinguished the blaze. The car could not be saved, however, and was almost completely destroyed except for its rear wheels and boot. Carnero is now claiming the fire was started on purpose after he helped lead a motion of no confidence last year which helped return the Partido Popular (PP) to power. The vote, which was support-
A POLICE officer has been hailed after his quick reactions saved a woman’s life in Velez-Malaga. The victim, who suffers from mental health issues, locked herself onto a fifth floor terrace after a pressure cooker caught fire. Witnesses said she was nervous and were afraid that she would jump. ed by the Partido Andalucista (PA) and Izquierda Unida (IU), caused ructions, according to the politician, leading to a series of threats. He now alleges the fire is just one in a string of ‘intimidating’ acts which include a broken rear view mirror and a damaged car front. Carnero explained, “I did not denounce it at that time because I did not think that things happened here, but I’ve seen that they were not coincidences, everything has been intentional,” adding he had “many enemies,” after last year’s vote. Ahora Rincon-Podemos ‘energetically’ deny the claims.
THE trial into the illegal and dangerous toxic rubbish tip near Nerja is underway. The first of the 34 suspects, including local business owners and politicians, have appeared in a Torrox court. Among those implicated are Mayor Rosa Arrabal, her predecessor Jose Alberto Armijo and former environmental councillor Jose Miguel Jimena. Investigators have since August been probing the case in which a plot of land near the Miel River in the Sierras Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park was used as an unlicensed dumping ground for 18 years from 1998 to 2016. As previously reported in the Euro Weekly News, the 36,000sqm landfill is regarded as a serious environmental threat after toxic chemicals were found on the site. Those implicated are accused of endangering the environment, falsifying documents and fraud.
