CABRERA: Island’s waters a bone of contention between Madrid and Mallorca.
Battle for national park
Black gold? By Matthew Elliott Plans to expand the national park around Cabrera island off Mallorca’s southern coast have been formally vetoed by the conservative government in Madrid. National minister for the environment, Isabel Garcia, said the planned expansion of 80,000 hectares was “excessive.” Garcia, an appointee of prime minister Mariano Rajoy, said the Balearic government had not sought sufficient dialogue with people who may be affected by the proposed expansion. Both the PSOE and Mes, the parties in control of the Balearic parliament, voiced their 100 per cent approval of the expansion. It would have brought
the total area of protected space around the isle to 90,000 hectares, nine times the current area. Oil is suspected of being the real root of the discord between Palma and Madrid. Prime Minister Rajoy recently announced plans to begin oil exploration in Balearic waters, much to the fury of the regional government. The expansion of the national park by 80,000 hectares would dramatically increase the area safeguarded from drilling and seismological surveys, making oil exploration all but impossible. Madrid believes the expansion is a scheme to thwart its oil ambitions, while Mallorca environmentalists see the veto as a brazen statement of intent to drill.
