No sign of recovery for natural park
Scorched earth Photo by Escuela de Pilotos La Montaña/Facebook
By Matt Ford Shocking new images of the devastation caused by last summer’s wildfires in Javea and Benitachell have emerged. Taken by the Mountain Pilots’ School, the photos show a bleak and desolate scene with little to no regrowth of plants in what was previously a dense Mediterranean forest with Aleppo pine and other species. The Granadella is now an arid, desert-like landscape,
with the effect of winds causing further erosion that will make recovery difficult if certain actions are not undertaken immediately, warn local ecologists. A spokesman from the flight school added: “With these photos we want to remind local people that we are entering a new summer full of danger for the remaining forests, so we must all collaborate so that such terrible fires never happen again.”
