Deadly dispute Mother kills baby before hanging herself By Matt Ford Guardia Civil investigators have confirmed that a woman who was found hanged on a Llucmajor farm on Wednesday morning killed her 18month-old daughter before committing suicide. Initial police reports suggest that the 34-year-old Spanish mother, who hailed from the Canary Islands, had a fierce argument with her partner the previous afternoon. The altercation became so heated that the woman picked up her daughter and left the house, leading the man to report their disappearance to Local Police a few hours later after several calls
failed to reveal their whereabouts. As officers mounted a search, he himself discovered the bodies of the mother and infant close to the family’s property near the Las Palmera urbanisation on the outskirts of Llucmajor just before 8am. They were hanging from the rafters of a small barn on the Can Granada finca, located around 100 metres away from their family home. Investigators from both the Judicial Police and Criminal Unit of the Guardia Civil were dispatched to the scene, with preliminary enquiries ruling out the intervention of a third party. The bodies were subse-
quently transferred to the Anatomical Forensic Institute in Palma de Mallorca, where a full autopsy will be performed. The site remains closed off as the search for clues continues. There is no suggestion that the man acted violently towards his partner at any point, and the Balearic High Court has confirmed that there are no records of domestic violence between the pair. The incident has provoked astonishment among neighbours of the family, who have been unable to explain why the apparently normal woman would commit such an atrocity.
