Killer driver was drunk
By Matt Ford A 35-year-old Ukrainian woman was killed and six others, including a two-yearold child, were injured when a drunk driver careered off the road into a children’s playground in Benalmadena. The tragic incident occurred on Avenida Estrella del Mar when the 44-year-old motorist tried to turn a corner at the junction with Ronda del Golf Oeste. One witness described him “driving so fast that I thought it was a thief who had robbed the supermarket next door.” Police have now confirmed the motorist was three times over the legal alcohol limit.

As he took the corner he veered into the opposite lane and was then forced to swing off the road to avoid an oncoming car. At this point he careered into occupied tables and chairs outside a snack kiosk next to the playground. Several people who were in the park saw the Peugeot 206 coming and managed to get out of the way, but those sitting closest to the road were not so lucky. According to witness reports the woman who died was carried along on the car’s bonnet for several seconds. As she slid off she was run over but remained conscious until paramedics arrived. The
woman was then transferred to the Hospital Clinico in a critical condition but died of her injuries early on Tuesday morning despite undergoing two separate operations. The other six people hit by the car suffered minor injuries with the exception of a woman who broke her leg. The infant is said to be “fine” and was not badly hurt. The driver lives in Churriana but works as a gardener in Benalmadena, and it has now been revealed he had tested positive for alcohol and drugs on two other occasions, even completing a driver awareness course in order to regain his lost licence in 2013.
He was arrested in the immediate aftermath of the incident and on Wednesday, October 19, a Torremolinos Court ruled he should be imprisoned without bail while he is investigated for offences including homicide by gross negligence, crimes against road safety and several counts of grievous bodily harm.
